Report: Browns CB Joe Haden is day to day with shoulder injury

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/15/2014) Browns cornerback Joe Haden has been listed as day to day with a shoulder injury, a league source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on Monday. Haden suffered the injury in the first half of a 30-0 defeat to Cincinnati.

Cleveland will face Carolina and Baltimore to end the regular season.

Browns DST gets no help from offense

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/14/2014) Coming off an impressive showing against the league's No. 1 offense last week against Indianapolis, the Browns defense got a dose of reality Week 15 against Cincinnati, allowing 30 points on 347 yards. You could argue it didn't play that poorly, though. It's just with rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel making his first career start, the Browns defense was on the field for nearly 40 minutes.

The Browns ran only 38 plays in the 30-0 loss, allowing the Bengals to run 71. They did at least record two sacks and one interception, extending their streak of consecutive games with an interception to 10.

Though the Browns DST didn't have a strong showing in this one, it generally performs well with favorable matchups. It has a halfway decent one Week 16 at Carolina, so if you get in a bind, it might be worth using in Fantasy.

Browns DST surprises with tough matchup

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/7/2014) Facing a Colts team that entered the day ranked first in both yards per game and points per game, the Browns DST wasn't expected to put up much of a fight in Week 14. But in terms of Fantasy scoring, at least in standard CBSSports.com leagues, it equaled its best performance of the season.

A couple defensive touchdowns, the first the Browns have had since way back in Week 2, really made the difference. Linebacker Craig Robertson recovered a fumble by quarterback Andrew Luck for the first, and defensive back Justin Gilbert returned an interception 21 yards for the second. In all, the Browns had four takeaways, including two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. They also had three sacks.

They did give up 25 points on 362 yards to the Colts, so again, the touchdowns made all the difference. You shouldn't count on those every week, but the Browns are hosting the Bengals in Week 15 -- the other team their DST scored 26 Fantasy points against. You can probably do better than the Browns DST for that matchup, but obviously, you have some incentive to use it if you get in a pinch.

Browns defense just OK at Buffalo

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/30/2014) Though they had a decent matchup, the Browns were nothing special defensively Week 13 at Buffalo. True, they allowed just 287 yards to the Bills, but thanks in part to some offensive shortcomings (the Bills returned a fumble for a touchdown in the third quarter), they also gave up 26 points.

The Browns DST didn't have too many big plays of its own, recording two interceptions but only one sack, and has now gone three games without scoring double-digit Fantasy points in standard CBSSports.com leagues. With an unfavorable matchup Week 14 against Indianapolis, the Browns DST is an obvious sit in Fantasy.

Browns unsure if Tashaun Gipson will be placed on IR

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2014) Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters Monday he's unsure if injured free safety Tashaun Gipson will be placed on the season-ending IR list, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Gipson underwent an MRI on his injured knee, which revealed a Grade 3 MCL injury and no structural damage to his ACL. The injury could keep him sidelined approximately six-to-eight weeks. There's a chance Gipson could return in the postseason, if the Browns clinch a spot during the regular season. Pettine indicated it's "too early to start studying (playoff) scenarios."

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson out 6-8 weeks with MCL injury

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2014) Browns free safety Tashaun Gipson underwent an MRI on his injured knee, which revealed a Grade 3 MCL injury, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports Monday. The MRI also revealed no structural damage to his ACL.

Gipson was carted off the field in Week 12 with the injury. According to ESPN, the injury typically requires a six-to-eight week recovery, which could keep him out for the remainder of the regular season.

Browns DST again short of dominance

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/23/2014) The Browns bounced back to some degree Week 12 at Atlanta after struggling against the Texans and quarterback Ryan Mallett in his first NFL start the week before. They had three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery, but they still allowed 24 points on 315 yards -- a far cry from the 11.0 points on 305.7 yards the Raiders, Buccaneers and Bengals averaged against them in Weeks 8-10.

The Browns DST has been an up-and-down Fantasy unit without a real standout game thanks to having just one touchdown all season, but it has generally taken advantage of favorable matchups. With such a matchup Week 13 at Buffalo, it has some low-end appeal in Fantasy.

Report: Browns will sign LB Scott Solomon to practice squad

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/18/2014) The Browns will sign defensive end Scott Solomon to the practice squad, according to ESPN on Tuesday, per ESPN. Solomon is expected to fit in at outside linebacker with Cleveland's 3-4 defensive scheme. He has registered eight total tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery this season with the Buccaneers.

Browns hope to have Jabaal Sheard back this season

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2014) Browns coach Mike Pettine remains hopeful of having defensive end Jabaal Sheard back at some point this season. Sheard left Week 11 against Houston with an ankle injury and told reporters his injury is a "little more serious" compared to Karlos Dansby's MCL sprain, per the Associated Press.

Browns LB Karlos Dansby out 'up to' one month with knee injury

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2014) Browns linebacker Karlos Dansby could be sidelined for up to a month with a knee injury, coach Mike Pettine told reporters, per the Akron Beacon Journal on Monday. Dansby left Week 11 against the Texans with a sprained MCL, according to ESPN.

Pettine remains optimistic he'll return this season.

"I don't think his season is over, but he could be out upwards of a month," Pettine said.

Browns defense can't rattle young QB

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2014) The Browns faced what should have been a good matchup in Week 11, with quarterback Ryan Mallett getting his first start for the Texans, but the Browns couldn't take advantage in a 23-7 loss.

The Texans put up two offensive touchdowns, all with Mallett's arm, and racked up 424 yards of offense along the way. The Browns defense failed to do much to rattle Mallett, who threw just one interception and was not sacked once in the game.

The Browns entered Week 11 riding high, with their DST unit having accounted for five straight games with at least 10 Fantasy points. They might have trouble reaching that level again in Week 12, with a matchup against the Falcons on the way.

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson upgraded to probable for Week 11

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/15/2014) Browns free safety Tashaun Gipson was cleared by an independent neurologist and was upgraded from questionable to probable for Sunday's Week 11 clash at home against the Texans, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Gipson suffered a concussion the previous week against the Bengals. He currently leads the league with six interceptions.

Browns' Phil Taylor will be placed on IR list

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/14/2014) The Browns will place defensive lineman Phil Taylor (knee) on the season-ending injured reserve list, coach Mike Pettine told reporters, per the News Herald. Taylor returned from a four-game absence in Week 10 against Cincinnati, but may have aggravated the injury. He is expected to undergo surgery in the near future.

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson back at practice Friday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/14/2014) Browns free safety Tashaun Gipson returned to practice on Friday, and it appears as if he could play Week 11 against the Texans, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Gipson suffered a concussion the previous week against the Bengals. He currently leads the league with six interceptions.

Browns DST capitalizes on matchup again

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/2/2014) Facing a bottom-three offense for the third time in as many weeks, the Browns once again had a respectable defensive showing Week 9 against Tampa Bay, allowing 17 points on 365 yards. They recorded two sacks and had two interceptions, giving them seven in their last four games.

Though the Browns DST has contributed double-digit Fantasy points in four straight games, according to standard CBSSports.com scoring, it hasn't had that monster game that's made your entire week in Fantasy, in part because its only touchdown came way back in Week 2.

And it's running out of favorable matchups. Its next one Week 10 at Cincinnati is middle-of-the-road at best.

Browns DST keeps rolling through Raiders

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/27/2014) The Browns defense took advantage of a good matchup in Week 8, in a 23-13 win over the Raiders.

The Raiders managed to find the end zone just once in the game, on a touchdown in the final seconds of the game. The Browns mostly held them in check despite surrendering 387 yards of total offense, as they came away with three turnovers and three sacks in the win.

The Browns DST unit has reached double figures in Fantasy scoring in each of their last three games, after doing so just once in their first four. They will look to extend that streak in Week 9 against the Buccaneers.

Browns OLB Paul Krugers enjoys three-sack Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/26/2014) Browns outside linebacker Paul Kruger, who was a disappointment in 2013 with just 4 1/2 sacks, exceeded that number for the season Sunday with three sacks against Oakland to give him five on the year.

Kruger added two more tackles and a pass defensed.

Browns DL Ahtyba Rubin will not need ankle surgery

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/22/2014) Browns coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin will not need ankle surgery after getting a second opinion. Rubin, who has missed the last two games, is expected to practice on a limited basis Wednesday.

Browns LB Chris Kirksey has big game in bad game for team

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/19/2014) Browns rookie linebacker Chris Kirksey managed a breakthrough game Sunday at Jacksonville despite the team's lopsided loss.

Kirksey led the team with a career-best seven solo tackles and registered one of their two sacks. It was his first sack since the season opener.

Browns mostly good against Jaguars

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/19/2014) The Browns DST didn't beat up on the Jaguars to the extent most do Week 7 at Jacksonville, allowing 24 points on 336 yards, but it made up for it with big plays, recording three interceptions (including two by Tashaun Gipson) and two sacks.

The result in standard CBSSports.com leagues was 10 Fantasy points for the second straight week, equaling its second-best single-game total this season.

Of course, if that's all the Browns DST can muster with the most favorable matchup in the league, it may not be a slam dunk for another favorable matchup Week 8 against Oakland. It'll still have some sleeper appeal for sure, but weigh your options carefully.

Browns announce knee surgery will end Armonty Bryant's season

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/13/2014) The Browns announced Monday defensive end Armonty Bryant will have surgery to repair knee ligaments, according to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram. Bryant will miss the rest of the season.

Browns DST has surprisingly good showing

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/13/2014) After allowing an average of 26.3 points on 421.8 yards in their first four games, the Browns stepped up defensively Week 6 against Pittsburgh, allowing just 10 points on 359 yards. They were lacking in big plays, though, recording two sacks and one interception to give them just 10 Fantasy points in standard CBSSports.com leagues.

The matchup may have contributed to the performance. While the Steelers aren't bad offensively, they seem to be in a rut right now, having scored just 17 points Week 5 at Jacksonville.

So you shouldn't put a lot of faith in the Browns DST based on this performance. That said, it has the best matchup a DST can have Week 7 at Jacksonville and is worth adding off the waiver wire for that reason alone.

Report: Browns fear DL Armonty Bryant has torn ACL

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/13/2014) The Browns believe defensive end Armonty Bryant suffered a torn ACL Sunday against the Steelers, a source told NFL.com. Bryant is undergoing an MRI Monday.

Bryant has totaled 11 tackles (five solo) and one sack through five games.

Report: Browns DE Phil Taylor underwent knee procedure

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(10/8/2014) Browns starting defensive end Phillip Taylor "underwent a minor scope procedure on his knee" and likely will miss "at least a few games," reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Taylor injured his knee in the first half of the Week 5 win at Tennessee.

He has seven tackles at end this season after starting 15 games at nose tackle last year.

Browns DL Phil Taylor, Joe Haden getting injuries evaluated

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/6/2014) Browns head coach Mike Pettine said defensive lineman Phil Taylor (knee) and cornerback Joe Haden (hip) underwent further evaluation Monday. Pettine said he will have updates on both players Wednesday.
