News: Jets quarterback David Garrard told SiriusXM Radio that swelling in his knee will force him to retire. Garrard had been practicing with the Jets and was a dark horse contender to start for them this season but his knee was "not holding up."
Analysis: Garrard recently posted some messages from well wishers regarding retirement on Twitter, suggesting the retirement is for real. He'll leave as a quarterback who was seemingly always on the fence as a borderline Fantasy starter when he was in his prime but was an afterthought after injuries limited him over the last few years.
News:David Garrard posted on Twitter he signed with the Jets. He's expected to compete for the starting job in training camp with Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy and maybe Tim Tebow.
Analysis: Garrard sat out the 2012 season with injuries but has been cleared to play since November. Even if he beats out Sanchez & Co. he won't be worth using in Fantasy play except as a possible one-week replacement off waivers when faced with a favorable matchup.
News: ESPN reports quarterback David Garrard will ultimately sign a deal with the Jets, though USA Today reports Garrard could still sign elsewhere. Apparently the Jets still need to make cap room before signing Garrard, and the veteran passer has some interest from other teams. Garrard worked out for the Jets this week.
Analysis: The 34-year-old Garrard had not played in a game since Dec. 26, 2010, as injuries have eroded away his career. Even if he signed a contract and won the job in New York Fantasy owners shouldn't consider him.
News: Multiple outlets reported Thursday that the Jets worked out veteran quarterback David Garrard. The team is looking for competition for starter Mark Sanchez in training camp this summer.
Analysis: The 34-year-old Garrard had not played in a game since Dec. 26, 2010, as injuries have eroded away his career. Even if he signed a contract and won the job in New York Fantasy owners shouldn't consider him.
News: CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports free agent quarterback David Garrard, who was in contention for the Dolphins' starting quarterback job before suffering a knee injury in the preseason, is healthy and cleared to work out for teams, according to his agent, Albert Irby. He is ready to go, Irby said.
Analysis: It's interesting Garrard chooses now to disclose his intentions to return to the NFL since a rash of injuries have plagued NFL quarterbacks as of late. Garrard seemed to have a very good shot to win the Dolphins' starting job before getting hurt, so clearly he can still play in the NFL. It's just that he has his own durability issues, which is why teams probably haven't been calling to date. Fantasy owners can leave Garrard on waivers until he is back in the NFL.
News: After being listed as the top quarterback on the team's initial depth chart during the preseason, veteran David Garrard was released by the Dolphins on Tuesday, the Palm Beach Post reports. Garrard's dismissal was considered a strong possibility as Miami was carrying four quarterbacks and needed to make a decision before the start of the regular season when his contract would have become guaranteed. He did not play during the preseason after being sidelined for nearly a month following arthroscopic knee surgery he had on Aug. 11.
Analysis: Garrard's release is certainly an interesting conclusion to the quarterback battle for the Dolphins, who continue to make puzzling decisions regarding their roster. The 34-year-old Garrard had not played in a game since Dec. 26, 2010, as injuries have eroded away his career, but Miami decided to bring him to training camp. Garrard's injury allowed rookie Ryan Tannehill to capture the starting role and Matt Moore will serve as his backup, unless he's moved in a trade. Fantasy owners should leave Garrard untouched in all formats as he might not land with another NFL team.
News: Miami quarterback David Garrard returned to practice Monday as he continues his recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery, according to the Palm Beach Post. Garrard missed the entire preseason and most of training camp after undergoing the procedure on Aug. 11, and as one of four quarterbacks on the roster, his spot is in jeopardy. The Dolphins could release or trade him. Garrard said Dolphins officials have given him no hints regarding their plans. "I honestly don't even know what's going on," he said. "There are still enough teams in this league to play for if it is not here. But I'm excited about here. I'm excited about being on this team, and hopefully I'll still be here." Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill was named the starter for Week 1.
Analysis: Garrard started the preseason schedule as Miami's starting quarterback, but now will have to work his way back in order to secure the backup position to Tannehill and could possibly find himself without a spot at all. What a difference an injury makes. The 34-year-old was sidelined for nearly a month after the surgery, however, survived the team's list of roster cuts. Garrard has played in 16 games only twice in the past five seasons and is certainly not a guarantee to accomplish that feat this year. Fantasy owners should continue to ignore him in all formats at this point.
News: The Palm Beach Post reports that Dolphins quarterback David Garrard timetable to return from his knee injury is likely closer to 3-to-4 weeks. That makes his return questionable for the start of the regular season.
Analysis: Garrard is competing with Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill to be the starter for the Dolphins, but he won't be starting Week 1 if he's not on the field. Continue to monitor what develops with Garrard, but he should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option at best if he's the starter for Week 1. He should not be drafted in the majority of leagues.
News: Dolphins quarterback David Garrard will miss Friday's exhibition game against Tampa Bay with a knee injury, according to The Miami Herald. It's unclear exactly when Garrard suffered the injury as he participated in Thursday's practice, but has been wearing a compression sleeve on his leg. FOXSports.com reported Garrard will likely undergo arthroscopic surgery on Saturday and be sidelined two to four weeks. "Nothing happened" just Father Time, wear and tear," Garrard told the website. "They have to take out loose things floating around."
Analysis: Even before the Dolphins took a snap in an exhibition game, their quarterback competition was whittled to two players. Garrard will likely miss the entire preseason with the knee issue, leaving last year's starter Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill to battle for the starting position. However, Garrard said he is hoping to stay with Miami and looks to jump back into the race in the regular season. "One day at a time right now," he told reporters. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor the situation but with Garrard facing uncertainty, he should not be drafted in most formats.
News: Veteran quarterback David Garrard was listed as the starter when Miami released its first depth chart of training camp Monday. Garrard, who is in his first season with the Dolphins, is followed by Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill. However, he is not assured to start the team's preseason opener Friday against Tampa Bay. "In no way, shape or form is this finalized," coach Joe Philbin said. "It's a starting point."
Analysis: The Dolphins' quarterback battle is expected to last throughout the duration of camp, but it is mildly surprising Garrard has the early advantage. The 34-year-old did not play a game in the NFL last season, but has completed 61.6 percent of his passes during his career, which is slightly better than Moore (59.1). In his last season with Jacksonville in 2010, Garrard accounted for a career-high 23 touchdowns, yet he also posted 26 turnovers. Keep an eye on the battle, but the victor should only be considered a reserve quarterback in the majority of Fantasy drafts.
News: SI.com reports that Dolphins quarterback David Garrard has the best chance to win the starting job ahead of Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill. Per the report, by noted columnist Peter King, Garrard's practice on Wednesday was comparable to Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer and Peyton Manning, who King saw in person. Wrote King, Garrard "was terrific consistently through practice, hitting a bomb to promising free agent Roberto Wallace down the right side, throwing well on the run across his body, and, in general, looking extremely comfortable in a West Coast offense, which is new for him." Coach Joe Philbin also likes what he's seen from Garrard. "This guy's got something to him,'' said Philbin. "I like what I've seen."
Analysis: This is not much of a surprise since Garrard has the most starting experience of this trio. There is still a heated competition going on in training camp, and Garrard will have to perform well in the preseason games to keep his job. Even if Garrard is the starter he would only be a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback at best in the majority of leagues.
News: According to the Palm Beach Post, Dolphins sources have "considered every contingency at quarterback" and might be open to the idea of cutting one of Moore or Garrard and making rookie Ryan Tannehill the No. 2 quarterback heading into the season. For that to happen, Tannehill must prove this summer he can handle playing in case he's pushed into action. So far, that hasn't happened yet as Garrard and Moore have taken the majority of first-team reps this summer.
Analysis: Garrard has the most starting experience of the quarterbacks in camp and hasn't looked entirely awful. Moore started for the Dolphins last year and had some pretty impressive games. Ultimately, no Dolphins quarterback is worth considering in Fantasy since it's fairly certain the team will alternate who they use throughout the season. But we'll keep you posted on the Fins' quarterbacks nonetheless.
News: The Miami Herald reports that if the season starts today, David Garrard would be the No. 1 quarterback "no question." Garrard is competing for the starting spot with Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill.

Even if Garrard is the starter he would only be a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback at best in the majority of leagues.
News: The Palm Beach Post reports that the Dolphins quarterback depth chart heading into training camp will likely be David Garrard on top followed by Matt Moore and then rookie Ryan Tannehill. The report says Garrard has "much more experience than either Moore or, of course, Tannehill as an NFL starter and it serves him well. He really didnt look as if he had taken a year off, which was the case while he got a back injury addressed." As for Moore, the report says "its hard to imagine Moore not getting a long look." And as for Tannehill, "hes not in the running right now due to his untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic. Coach Joe Philbin and his staff have made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated, so for now at least Tannehill will continue his apprenticeship as the No. 3 guy."
Analysis: Garrard has a great chance to win the starting job, but this will remain an open competition through training camp. Keep an eye on who wins, but even if Garrard does start he would be just a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback at best in deeper leagues.
News: The Palm Beach Post reports that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin still seems a long way from naming a starting quarterback in the battle with Matt Moore, David Garrard and Ryan Tannehill. Its been close, Philbin said Thursday at the conclusion of a three-day minicamp. The report says Moore certainly did nothing to lose the job he held for the final 12 weeks of last season. Garrard showed leadership and an ability to make the quick, on-target throws that are at the core of the West Coast offense. And Tannehill made steady progress, although he appears to be a step or two behind the competition. Im not a huge stat guy, said Philbin. Well look at them, but Im more of a guy who coaches on instinct, and what your eyes tell you.
Analysis: The Dolphins will likely have an open competition for the starting job, and Moore could have an edge given what he did last year when he took over for the injured Chad Henne. But Tannehill is familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, who was his coach in college, and Garrard has the most experience. Keep an eye on what happens with the competition, but even if Garrard starts he would be just a No. 2 Fantasy option in deeper leagues.
News: The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that Dolphins quarterback David Garrard said the back injury that kept him out of the 2011 season is doing well. The report says at OTA workouts this spring, "Garrard appeared crisp." In addition to his typical workout, Garrard said he does extra work to help strengthen the muscles in his back. Throughout OTAs, he said he has had no pain and no setbacks after signing a free-agent deal in March.
Analysis: The Dolphins will likely have an open competition for the starting job with Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill, and Moore could have an edge given what he did last year when he took over for the injured Chad Henne. But Tannehill is familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, who was his coach in college, and Garrard has the most experience. Keep an eye on what happens with the competition, but even if Garrard starts he would be just a No. 2 Fantasy option in deeper leagues.
News: The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the Dolphins are using quarterback David Garrard as the starter during OTA workouts Monday. Garrard is competing with Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill for the No. 1 job.

News: Dolphins quarterback David Garrard is not with the team during Tuesday's OTA session. The NFL Network reports that Garrard is stuck in Jacksonville with his wife due to storm damage to his house. Garrard says he is OK, but missing voluntary workouts could be a problem. Garrard is competing with Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill for the starting job.
Analysis: We hope that Garrard is OK and didn't suffer an injury, and he should be able to practice once training camp starts. The Dolphins will have an open competition for the starting job, but Garrard is a long-shot to play ahead of Moore, the incumbent, and Tannehill, the first-round pick. If he does win the job he would be a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option at best.
News: Days after Dolphins owner Stephen Ross declared Matt Moore as the team's starting quarterback, head coach Joe Philbin says he'll make the call on who starts for the Dolphins this season, not Ross. "I know he's the owner, but he might not sign my check, the treasurer does," Philbin said Tuesday according to the Palm Beach Post. "But last time I checked, he's on board. We've been very up front with him, that we want a competitive situation at that position."
Analysis: During late May OTAs, Moore and David Garrard were alternating snaps with the starters while rookie Ryan Tannehill worked with the backups. Reports say all three quarterbacks looked good. We think Tannehill will ultimately start the most games for the Dolphins, but if the coaches don't think he's ready to start, then Moore will probably begin the season under center. The reality is that none of the Dolphins' quarterbacks are worth starting in Fantasy and can be left off of standard rosters.
News: The Dolphins made Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill their first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft at No. 8 overall. He will now compete with Matt Moore and David Garrard for the starting job.
News: The Miami Herald reports that during Tuesday's voluntary workout for the Dolphins that quarterbacks David Garrard and Matt Moore split the reps "almost dead even," according to coach Joe Philbin. Moore and Garrard are competing for the starting job this year.
Analysis: It's interesting that Garrard got even snaps with Moore, who was the starter in 2011 and considered the favorite since Garrard was out last year. We expect Moore to win the job, but whoever starts in Miami this season should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback at best.
News: The Miami Herald reports that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said in a conference call with fans that he is looking forward to seeing the quarterback competition between Matt Moore and David Garrard. Philbin made the point that one way he'll be looking for the quarterback to "separate themselves" from on another is by more quickly learning the system and showing coaches they can be comfortable in the system. The Dolphins will run a version of the West Coast offense.
Analysis: Garrard will likely open the season as the No. 2 quarterback for the Dolphins, but keep an eye on what develops in training camp. If he does win the job ahead of Moore then he would only be a No. 2 Fantasy passer at best in deeper leagues.
News: Quarterback David Garrard signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins on Monday evening, giving them a veteran passer to compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. Garrard, 34, missed all of 2011 with a back injury which he had surgery for in October; the Jaguars cut him last September. "It's going to be a great competition, and I'm all about that," Garrard said. "I'm going to do my best to make sure it's me on opening day."
Analysis: Garrard's best season was in 2007, when he threw 18 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. He topped 3,500 yards passing in 2008 and 2009, and he's 39-37 as a starter in nine seasons, all with Jacksonville. If he earns the starting job in Miami, he'll only be worth a look off waivers as a one-week replacement. Garrard would only be worth a late pick in leagues that start multiple quarterbacks.
News: Free-agent quarterback David Garrard told the Florida Times-Union that he's close to ready to play football again. Garrard said he's 90 to 95 percent healthy and will be ready to work out for interested teams. Garrard had a back injury that limited him in Jaguars camp last summer and was cut. He didn't play in 2011. "I am definitely fed up with sitting around and not being on a team, running and throwing with guys," Garrard said. "This past year was an eye opener to the retired life, and I'm definitely not ready for that. I'm really excited about getting back out and being part of a team."
Analysis: The feeling here is that Garrard will be a backup somewhere in 2012. A number of teams could show interest but a few that stand out include Seattle, Atlanta and Chicago. Until Garrard starts playing regularly again, Fantasy owners shouldn't touch him.
News: The NFL Network reports that QB David Garrard expects to be fully healed from back surgery in mid-March/early-April and is intent on playing in 2012, his agent said. "He is open to all teams and any situation that makes since for him and the team," said Garrard's agent, Albert Irby. His agent also indicated Garrard would be open to being a backup. Garrard did not play in 2011 after being cut by the Jaguars prior to the season.
Analysis: Keep an eye on where Garrard lands, but it is unlikely he will open the season as a starter. He would only be a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in deeper leagues.
News: FOX Sports reports that free agent QB David Garrard is not in the running for a possible job with the Raiders. Garrard said that he will require immediate surgery on a herniated disc in his back. Garrard has been in pain since getting hurt in training camp.
Analysis: Garrard underwent an MRI that revealed the herniation. He said he wanted to be up front with the Raiders after they reached out to him following the injury suffered by starter Jason Campbell on Sunday. This will likely put Garrard out of the mix for any jobs this season.
News: ESPN reports that the Raiders have reached out to free agent QB David Garrard following the injury suffered by Jason Campbell in Week 6. Campbell is likely to miss the remainder of the season.
Analysis: Garrard was released on Sept. 6 and is not too far removed from being an NFL starting quarterback. In Oakland, he would return to being a viable No. 2 Fantasy quarterback with players like Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore to throw the ball to. Continue to monitor this situation.
News: The Jaguars announced the reason they released QB David Garrard on Tuesday was "pure football," according to coach Jack Del Rio, and had nothing to do with his salary. Garrard was set to make $8 million in 2011. "I think its imperative that we have the courage to do whats best for the football team," Del Rio said. "This decision was pure football. ... He just wasn't able to get it going this preseason. He even admitted that when we talked today." Del Rio said they did not offer Garrard a pay cut.
Analysis: Garrard will now shop his services around the league with the hope to land a starting job elsewhere. Some places where he could be needed are Seattle, Buffalo, Miami, Tennessee, Oakland, Washington or San Francisco. The Seahawks make the most sense based on his relationship QB coach Carl Smith, who was Garrard's offensive coordinator from 2005-06. Garrard is not worth drafting in the majority of leagues, and he should not be on the majority of rosters for Week 1. But keep an eye out for where he signs because he could be worth adding off the waiver wire.
News: According to FOXSports.com, the Jaguars plan to release QB David Garrard on Tuesday. The report says the Jaguars will go with Luke McCown as the starter in Jacksonville instead.
Analysis: This is shocking news since Garrard has done nothing to prove he shouldn't be the starter for the Jaguars, and Jacksonville was planning to eventually turn the job over to rookie Blaine Gabbert. Garrard will look to sign with a new team immediately, and he should be sought after based on his ability to run and pass. Continue to monitor what develops because this is a total surprise heading into Week 1 of the season.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports Wednesday that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio finally gave the news that was expected, revealing that David Garrard is the starting quarterback heading into 2011. "David's our starter," the coach simply put it. Rookie Blaine Gabbert, the No. 10 overall pick in April's draft, will open up his first pro season as the No. 2 QB.
Analysis: Garrard enters his 10th NFL season and sixth-straight as the team's top signal-caller. Fantasy owners should have expected the move just as we did, but that doesn't mean it's his job no matter what happens. Should the team stumble out of the gate in the AFC South, expect Gabbert to get his chance in 2011. Keep an eye on the issue, though neither Garrard nor Gabbert should be depended on in Fantasy play. The veteran is not worth anything sooner than a late-round pick on Draft Day to serve as a No. 2 Fantasy QB. He has battled injury and subpar play this preseason.
News: Even though David Garrard struggled against Buffalo's starters, there doesn't appear to be any quarterback controversy in Jacksonville -- for now. Rookie Blaine Gabbert made some nice throws when he entered the game in the second half at Buffalo on Saturday but didn't do much to warrant consideration for the top job. Garrard ran for a touchdown but completed just 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards. Gabbert followed up with much of the second half and overtime, totaling 52 yards and a touchdown to DuJuan Harris and an interception on 6 of 13 passing.
Analysis: Garrard should begin the season as the Jaguars' starter but could lose his grip on the job by the midseason if the Jaguars don't win a lot of games. For that reason alone, Garrard is no better than an iffy No. 2 Fantasy QB. You could do better with someone like Donovan McNabb, Matt Hasselbeck or even Chad Henne.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Tuesday veteran David Garrard remains the teams starting quarterback. Since the team selected rookie Blaine Gabbert No. 10 overall, the team has emphasized that Garrard is expected to start this season and that Gabbert wont be rushed. Both were tepid in their preseason game against the Falcons last Friday.
Analysis: It is expected that Garrard will begin the season and play until he either gets hurt, gets benched or gets the Jaguars out of playoff contention. Because he's not expected to play a full 16 games, Fantasy owners shouldn't trust Garrard as anything more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jacksonville's quarterback competition turned out to be a stalemate against Atlanta. David Garrard did little to solidify his starting spot and rookie Blaine Gabbert was equally unimpressive. Garrard completed 7 of 12 passes for 99 yards, with a terrible interception in three series. Gabbert, the 10th pick in the April draft, completed 11 of 23 passes for 96 yards in seven series. Gabbert was plagued by several drops, including three on one second-half series. Garrard did say after the game that his back felt great, which is a positive since it gave him trouble before.
Analysis: Garrard is likely to fend off Gabbert, who has been taking first-team reps even with Garrard healthy, but the battle could help push both signal-callers. Fantasy owners should keep an close eye on the remaining three preseason games just in case, though we see the veteran starting once the dust settles. But that said, we expect both passers to play this year, so neither should be drafted with high hopes.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jacksonville rookie QB Blaine Gabbert will have a chance to compete for the starting job against David Garrard. The veteran is expected to start Friday against the Falcons after missing the preseason opener against the Patriots with a back injury. Gabbert went 9 of 16 for 85 yards in his NFL debut last week.
Garrard is worth utilizing as a No. 2 QB in most Fantasy formats if he holds the job, worthy of a selection in the late rounds.
News: QB David Garrard is expected to play and start against the Falcons on Friday; though Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said how long is unknown. Garrard missed Thursdays preseason opener with a back injury, but returned to practice Saturday and has worked since. I feel great, Garrard said. I dont feel like Im quite 100 percent, but Im in the 90s. There have been plenty of times that I have been in the 90s for many games and nobody has ever known. Im fine, nothing but little aches and pains really.
Analysis: The Jaguars drafted Blaine Gabbert in the first round to be the QB of the future, but Garrard is the QB of the present. He will keep that role as long as he stays healthy. He would have to have a pretty bad preseason to be unseated by Gabbert. Garrard remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, who missed the team's first preseason game with a back injury, practiced Saturday morning and will do so again Saturday night. He said he expects to play in the team's second preseason game on Friday. Rookie Blaine Gabbert started in Garrard's absence Thursday against New England.
Analysis: While Gabbert has a world of talent, he showed during Thursday's game that he still has a lot to learn and that is why the Jaguars intend to open the season with Garrard under center. Garrard remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Tuesday that QB David Garrard, who is sidelined by a back injury, will travel with the team for Thursday's preseason game at New England, but won't play. Blaine Gabbert will start in Garrard's absence. Del Rio added that he expects Garrard will practice next week and play in the team's second preseason game against Atlanta.
Analysis: The Jaguars are committed to opening the year with Garrard under center, but if he isn't healthy or Gabbert outperforms him in the preseason, then Jacksonville might have to rethink what to do at the QB position. For now, that is not even an option since Garrard has plenty of time to get healthy for the opener. Garrard remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: The Jacksonville Times-Union reports that Jaguars QB David Garrard is unlikely to play in Thursday's preseason opener at New England. Garrard left practice Thursday with a back issue. "I want to be ready tomorrow," Garrard said on Monday. "I can't try to force myself out there and set myself back again." In the likely event Garrard doesn't start, rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert will start against the New England Patriots.
Analysis: Garrard was at practice on Monday, but he did not take any snaps. He hurt his back while trying to make a deep throw on Thursday and has not worked in practice since. Garrard said on Monday that his back feels better every day, but that he is not yet at the point where he can run around and take hits. Garrard should be fine and we expect him to start the 2011 season as the starter without much competition from Gabbert. Garrard has been unable to match the precision of his breakout 2007 season, but he remained a steady contributor for the Jags in 2010. In 14 games, Garrard threw for 2,734 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns. Garrard remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will not participate in Saturday nights scrimmage. He missed practice Friday after leaving practice Thursday with a back injury. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said the situation is not believed to be long-term or serious. Im pretty sure everybody wants to see 11, anyway, Garrard said, laughing. No. 11 is rookie first-round QB Blaine Gabbert. Del Rio said Garrard could return to practice Monday.
Analysis: Garrard will not be rushed into anything after a small scare like a back injury, so we won't be surprised if he is out for the near future as far as camp is concerned. He has dealt with several injuries in his career, though he has plated no less than 14 games in each of the last three seasons. Garrard should be fine and we expect him to start the 2011 season as the starter without much competition from rookie Gabbert. The veteran is at best worth a look in the late rounds as a No. 2 Fantasy QB considering he doesn't have elite weapons at his disposal outside of RB Maurice Jones-Drew.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard missed both of the Jaguars practices Friday with a back issue suffered Thursday. He underwent an MRI Friday that the Florida Times-Union reported revealed no major problems.

News: Jaguars QB David Garrard left practice with a back issue Thursday, but Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said afterward it was nothing major. Davids back got a little tight, Del Rio said. Were icing him down. Hell get treatment and all of that, but hell be fine. Garrard is listed as the team's No. 1 QB ahead of rookie Blaine Gabbert.
Analysis: Garrard should be able to come back to the team without much issue sooner rather than later, but it's a situation worth keeping an eye on. He has dealt with several injuries in his career, though he has plated no less than 14 games in each of the last three seasons. Garrard should be fine and we expect him to start the 2011 season as the starter without much competition from Gabbert. The veteran is at best worth a look in the late rounds as a No. 2 Fantasy QB considering he doesn't have elite weapons at his disposal outside of RB Maurice Jones-Drew.
News: The Jaguars expect to give rookie QB Blaine Gabbert some work with the first-team offense during the preseason, but coach Jack Del Rio said nothing he does will change the plan for the franchise's quarterback of the future. Instead, Gabbert will watch and learn from starter David Garrard and third-stringer Luke McCown for at least a season. Garrard, Gabbert and the rest of the Jaguars insist the team's quarterback dynamic is a healthy one, with everyone comfortable in their roles and no one second-guessing any decisions. "Dave's the starting quarterback," Gabbert said. "He's a heck of a football player. People say he's not, that's wrong. Some of the throws he can make and makes on a daily basis are extremely impressive. ... Although I'm a competitor and I'm going to go out there and play the best I can and play to the best of my ability, David is the starting quarterback of this football team."
Analysis: Garrard completed 64.5 percent of his passes in 2010, setting a franchise record with 23 touchdowns passes but also throwing a career-high 15 interceptions. He was sacked 33 times, lost four of his 11 fumbles and questioned by people inside and outside the building. Garrard had some of the best games of his nine-year career, but also endured some of the worst. The Jaguars responded by drafting a quarterback for the first time since 2003. He is going to feel the pressure to perform with Gabbert breathing down his neck. But outside of WR Mike Thomas and TE Marcedes Lewis, the Jaguars have a suspect receiving corps, so Garrard might not have a ton of quality targets at his disposal to succeed. Garrard is at best worth a look in the late rounds as a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: The National Football Post reports that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio doesn't plan to rush rookie QB Blaine Gabbert into the starting role in 2011. His plan is to stick with veteran David Garrard for at least one more year. Fortunately for us, with David returning as a very capable starter, you dont have to rush the development of Blaine, Del Rio said. Thats a good situation. Were operating from a position of strength as opposed to having to force a guy into duty before hes ready. Del Rio doesnt have a time in his head when he expects Gabbert to take over, or even when he expects Gabbert to make his debut. He wants to remain open minded about it so he can play him when the time is right. His only plan is to play the quarterback who gives the Jaguars the best chance to win. In a perfect world, Id like to see him not have to play this year in terms of having time to develop, Del Rio said. That doesnt mean I would keep him on the bench if I thought he was the best option to win. Ideally hes able to get that time to develop and really learn the game at this level. Id love to see Garrard have a nice season, lead us into a playoff position, and then see if we can get hot. Things dont always happen the way you have them planned though.
Analysis: Garrard has been unable to match the precision of his breakout 2007 season, but he remained a steady contributor for the Jags in 2010. In 14 games, Garrard threw for 2,734 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns. What we envision is Garrard starting the season, and if the Jaguars fall out of playoff contention, then Gabbert will take over. Garrard remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew said on NFL Network that he's behind QB David Garrard and doesn't understand why the team drafted rookie QB Blaine Gabbert. "I just feel like what we needed as an offense wasn't a new quarterback, we just needed another year amongst each other because we had a lot of new players come in," Jones-Drew said. "You see a team like the Patriots or the Steelers or the Colts, those guys (have) been in the same system for the 10, 12 years together, and so that's what we're trying to grow right now." Jones-Drew said he was "very shocked" that the Jags used their first pick on a QB. Jones-Drew said team officials explained to him that Garrard would benefit from competition in the same way he did back in 2007 when he unseated Leftwich as starter. "They're just trying to get that competitive thing going again and, I mean, it's going to be fun to watch," Jones-Drew said. "But I know David will win. He's a fighter, that's what he does."
Analysis: Garrard has been unable to match the precision of his breakout 2007 season, but he remained a steady contributor for the Jags in 2010. In 14 games, Garrard threw for 2,734 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns. We expect Garrard to beat out Gabbert as well.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars QB David Garrard is not concerned about the team drafting rookie QB Blaine Gabbert 10th overall in the NFL Draft. "I am always open to competition," Garrard said. "I think competition's healthy. You never shy away from competition. That's just sports." Garrard doesn't expect to be next year's starter just because he's the incumbent. He expects to have to earn it. "My thing is the best man will play," he said. "The cream will rise to the top. All those different sayings. That's true, you want the best person out there on the field. To give the team the best chance. That's what I believe. If it's not me, then it's just not me. If Blaine comes in and he is above and beyond just better than me then best of luck to him. Because the best person who is going to give this team a chance to win should be out there. I've always believed that. I'm going to work my tail off to make sure that it's me. I'm sure he'll be working hard as well. There's nothing but just healthy competition."
Analysis: We expect Garrard to open the season as the starter since coach Jack Del Rio needs to win now to keep his job. That would lean toward the veteran starting compared to the rookie. Still, if Gabbert plays well in training camp, he could supplant Garrard for Week 1. What we envision is Garrard starting the season, and if the Jaguars fall out of playoff contention, then Gabbert will take over. Garrard remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. He played well in 2010 with basically this same group of receivers, and his rushing ability sets him apart from other passers. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in deeper leagues.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis said on the NFL Network that he supports QB David Garrard. Lewis said Garrard should be able to start ahead of rookie QB Blaine Gabbert in 2011. "Dave is one of those guys that when his back is against the wall, he's coming out fighting," Lewis said. "Dave is going to accept the competition, take Blaine under his wing and continue to be our quarterback and do exactly what he's been doing since I've been here. And that's continue to be a leader on and off the field, in the community and doing his thing. Dave is in good spirits, and we're here to play football. He understands that the franchise, we have to evolve; we have to continue to plan for the future. But as far as we know, Dave is still our quarterback."
Analysis: We agree with Lewis that Garrard will remain the starter to open the 2011 season, but he's going to have to play well and the Jaguars are going to have to be in playoff contention for Garrard to likely keep the job all season. What we envision is Garrard starting the season, and if the Jaguars fall out of playoff contention, then Gabbert will take over. Garrard remains a quality No. 2 Fantasy QB even with a suspect WR corps and the rookie looking over his shoulder. He played well in 2010 with basically this same group of receivers, and his rushing ability sets him apart from other passers. If you need a backup Fantasy QB with a late-round pick, don't be afraid to take Garrard in all leagues.
News: The Jaguars official team website reports that Jaguars QB coach Mike Sheppard said rookie Blaine Gabbert could compete for the starting job with David Garrard this season. The Jaguars said before the draft it was likely they would take a QB to develop behind Garrard. They used their first selection on Gabbert, and since then, fans and observers have wondered just when Gabbert will play. I don't think as an organization we see it like that, Sheppard said. We see it as a competition. That makes the position better and the best player wins. Sheppard said the priority for Gabbert is acclimating him with the offense as quickly as possible. Your goal right away is to prepare him to play flat-out, 'here's our system,''' Sheppard said. That's why he had a (play)book the minute it was available for him to have a book. He'll do a good job with that.

News: Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew still supports David Garrard as the team's quarterback despite the selection of Blaine Gabbert in the first round of the draft, the Sports Xchange reports. Jones-Drew said Garrard shouldn't be criticized for problems with his supporting cast. "A quarterback is only as good as the players around him," he said. "So when everyone says David's struggling that's like slapping me in the face because, I mean, Peyton Manning can throw the ball anywhere he wants to on the field but if that receiver's not catching the ball, is Peyton Manning really Peyton Manning? So I think with our situation, we had a lot of young receivers, we had a bunch of injuries, and ... I don't want to make excuses, but when you put the ball somewhere and the guy's not there because your No. 1 guy (Mike) Sims-Walker is hurt, or Marcedes (Lewis) is banged up, or I'm banged up, or the offensive line is a little banged up, a lot of those things go into play. And if you noticed towards the end of the year we had a lot of starters who were hurt. And so our timing was off a little bit."
Analysis: Garrard will have the chance to play this year so long as he fends off Gabbert in training camp. But as soon as Jacksonville's season is lost (and it might be early on given their lack of personnel), Gabbert will get playing time even if Garrard's numbers are fine. Just that factor alone makes Garrard a risky Fantasy option, even as a No. 2 choice, because if he's not playing, he's not helping. At best he's worth a late-round pick in all drafts.
News: The Jaguars traded up six spots in the first round of the NFL draft and selected Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert with the 10th pick. The move instantly created a quarterback competition between Gabbert and inconsistent starter David Garrard. "We feel like we have a very capable player in David," coach Jack Del Rio said. "Certainly, there's going to be competition. We have an opportunity to have a young man with a good skill set come in here and work and earn his way. I don't think you can be strong enough at that position. It's such a premium position in what is really a quarterback-driven league."
Analysis: The Jaguars hinted that Garrard will likely start for them this year but that Gabbert is their QB of the future. Garrard's contract also happens to balloon in 2012, so chances are this will be his last year to show his stuff in Jacksonville. Last year Garrard played well, racking up 2,734 yards passing, 279 yards rushing, 23 pass TDs and five rush TDs. Then again, he also had 15 interceptions and four fumbles lost. It's clear that while Garrard had a solid season, he's still not a reliable Fantasy starter. Owners will draft him with a late-round pick in 2011 assuming his surgically repaired finger is fine.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard said he has been able to throw a football effectively which lets him know his injured finger is well on its way to mending. Garrard said he will be done with rehab on his finger when he can "make a whole fist.'' He's looking to bend his middle finger about 95 percent; currently it bends about 85 percent. The finger has a two-inch scar on its inside which crosses the middle knuckle.
Analysis: Garrard's finger should be fine, but his ego should be bruised after head coach Jack Del Rio told media this offseason that he'd like to bring in some competition for Garrard. The QB should at least face competition for the starting job this summer, which is hard to believe given his 2010 season: 2,734 yards passing, 279 yards rushing, 23 pass TDs and five rush TDs. Then again, he also had 15 interceptions and four fumbles lost. It's clear that while Garrard had a solid season, he's still not a reliable Fantasy starter. News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was lauded by head coach Jack Del Rio on Tuesday as the coach recognized him for setting the franchise record for touchdown passes (23) in a season despite missing three games. And then Del Rio also seemingly took a shot at Garrard, saying, "I think we've maybe not been aggressive enough bringing in talent at that position to groom and to challenge." On Monday, team owner Wayne Weaver said the team plans to draft a quarterback in April.

News: The Jaguars officially placed QB David Garrard on IR Friday. Garrard underwent finger surgery on Thursday.
Analysis: Garrard's season ends with 2,734 yards on 236 of 366 passing. He also had 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also had a solid year running with the ball, adding five touchdowns over 66 attempts for 279 yards with four fumbles lost. Both his passing and rushing touchdown totals were career-bests, but so were the 15 interceptions. Ultimately, Garrard had a good year and sets up to be considered as at least a quality Fantasy backup in 2011 assuming he is still running the Jacksonville offense.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard had successful finger surgery Thursday at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville. Garrard is out for the year as a ligament in the finger pulled away from the bone.

News: QB David Garrard will have surgery on his right middle finger Thursday and will miss Sunday's game at Houston, coach Jack Del Rio said on Wednesday. Garrard hurt the finger when it hit a helmet at Indianapolis back in Week 15. Trent Edwards is expected to start in his place against the Texans' bottom-ranked pass defense.

News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had an up-and-down performance in the Week 16 game against the Redskins. Garrard helped lead the Jaguars to a game-tying touchdown with 2:44 to play in the fourth quarter after the Redskins had been leading for most of the game. The touchdown was a 20-yard rush by Garrard on an excellent play call. Garrard ran up the middle largely untouched for the score. Garrard, who totaled 39 rushing yards with the score on six carries and led the Jaguars in rushing in the game, just missed 300 yards passing with 299. He went 22 of 38 and had one touchdown pass and two interceptions. The second interception was untimely for the Jaguars as it came in overtime and immediately put the Redskins into field goal range to win the game.
Analysis: The Jacksonville QB did not have his best game in the Week 16 contest against the Redskins. That said, with six touchdown passes in his last three games and a rushing score, he's definitely been reliable this season. He's never been spectacular, but Fantasy owners can depend on his solid production. That should continue in Week 17 at Houston. The Texans give up loads of yards and points through the air and Garrard should be worth using as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB for that final regular-season game.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard could not lead his team to a comeback win over the Colts Week 15. Garrard came up short in his vie to beat the division-rival Colts. He threw for 294 yards in the game with two touchdowns and one interception on 24 of 38 throwing. Garrard, who also rushed four times for 8 yards, found Mike Sims-Walker in the end zone for a 6-yard TD catch in the third quarter and again found him in the fourth from 1 yard out.
Analysis: Garrard has five touchdowns and two picks in his last two games and the Week 15 game was his first time over 200 yards passing since Week 11. Garrard continues to be reliable but not spectacular. That said, he's facing a weaker pass defense Week 16 against Washington. Treat him as a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 QB for that game.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard (hamstring) is active for Week 15 in Indianapolis. Garrard, who needs one touchdown pass in the game to break Mark Brunell's single-season team record of 20, is starting against the Colts.
Analysis: Garrard enters Sunday's game with five touchdown passes and just one interception in his last two games against the Colts. He went 17 for 22 earlier for 163 yards with two TDs and no picks and added a rushing touchdown in Week 4 against Indy, and he'll look to do better here. There are safer options at quarterback this week, particularly since the Colts' pass defense is much better at home than on the road, but Garrard is still a serviceable option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard is listed as questionable for his Week 15 game with the Colts because of a hamstring injury, but he's expected to start. Garrard was limited in practice this week after tweaking a muscle in practice.

There are safer options at quarterback this week, particularly since the Colts' pass defense is much better at home than on the road, but Garrard is still a serviceable option. We'll confirm his status this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard made an appearance on the practice report Thursday because of a hamstring injury. He was limited in practice, but he is not yet in doubt of missing Week 15 against the Colts. Garrard enters Sunday's game with five touchdown passes and just one interception in his last two games against the Colts. He went 17 for 22 earlier for 163 yards with two TDs and no picks and added a rushing touchdown in Week 4 against the Colts. Garrard has gone 3-1 in four games against the AFC South this season and has completed 62 of 84 passes (73.8 pct.) for 680 yards with four TDs and one interception in those games.
Analysis: Garrard had just 159 yards in Week 14, but he threw three touchdowns for the third time this season. He's tied the single-season Jaguars passing TD record with 20 already and could break it against the Colts. In fact, Kerry Collins of the Titans just had a monster game against Indianapolis in Week 14. The Colts have allowed seven passing touchdowns with no interceptions in their last four games and Garrard should keep that going. Garrard is never really going to find himself among the No. 1 Fantasy quarterbacks, but he's still worth starting this week in any league -- as long as he doesn't suffer a setback with his hamstring injury.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard has played well recently against his Week 15 opponents, the Indianapolis Colts. Facing the Colts in Indianapolis Week 15, Garrard comes in with five touchdown passes and just one interception with a 101.9 quarterback rating in his last two games against them. He went 17 for 22 earlier this year for 163 yards with two TDs and no picks and added a rushing touchdown in that game with 44 yards on the ground. Garrard has gone 3-1 in four games against the AFC South this season and has completed 62 of 84 passes (73.8 pct.) for 680 yards with four TDs and one pick in those games.
Analysis: Garrard is coming off a solid performance Week 14 against Oakland in which he threw for just 159 yards but had three touchdown passes and one interception. He currently ranks second in the NFL with a 118.9 fourth-quarter quarterback rating behind only Ben Roethlisberger. He's tied the single-season Jaguars passing TD record with 20 already and will break it against the Colts, which are middle of the road against opposing quarterbacks. In fact, Kerry Collins of the Titans just had a monster game against Indianapolis in Week 14. The Colts have allowed seven passing touchdowns with no interceptions in their last four games and Garrard should keep that going. Garrard is never really going to find himself among the No. 1 Fantasy quarterbacks, but he's still worth starting this week in any league.
News:David Garrard only completed half of his 22 pass attempts in Week 14 vs. the Raiders, and he only amassed 159 yards, but the three touchdowns he threw made his day quite productive. Garrard hit Marcedes Lewis, Jason Hill and Mike-Sims Walker for scores and rushed for 32 yards while helping the Jaguars maintain their division lead on the Colts. Garrard, who was credited for an interception after a pass was ripped from WR Mike Thomas in the first half, also tied a franchise record for most 20 touchdown pass seasons. "It's very important," Garrard said of the record, "because when you're breaking records scoring touchdowns, that means you're doing some good things.''
Analysis: Garrard might have been tough to trust this week since his numbers haven't been great, and in reality he didn't have a great game -- but Fantasy owners will gladly take the three touchdowns. He'll play at Indianapolis next week, an AFC South showdown with huge ramifications. Garrard threw two touchdowns and rushed for one more on 44 yards and completed 17 of 22 passes for 163 yards earlier in the year against the Colts, and he's certainly capable of matching those totals in Week 15.
News:David Garrard's Fantasy owners can't be thrilled with his recent play. After a good game vs. Houston in Week 10 helped along by a Hail Mary completion, Garrard has totaled two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, four interceptions, two fumbles lost and an average of 180.7 yards passing over his last three. The Raiders come calling to Jacksonville in Week 14, and while they have the league's ninth-best pass defense they still have given up 22 passing touchdowns this season, including five in their last four games. Additionally, the Raiders have yielded at least 275 passing yards in each of their last three -- and only one of the quarterbacks they've faced threw more than 30 attempts.
Analysis: Garrard's recent play has been ugly, but there's room for optimism here given the Raiders leaky pass defense of late. Flying across the country won't help Oakland's play either. Furthermore, there's a shot Garrard gets WR Mike Sims-Walker back this week, which would give him another fairly reliable target. There's a lot to like about Garrard this week -- it might take a desperate situation or a lot of guts to start him, but he should improve on his recent totals.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard didn't do much with his arm in a Week 13 win at Tennessee, completing 14 of 19 passes for just 126 yards, but he saved his day a little with a rushing touchdown and finished with 10 carries for 19 yards.
Analysis: Garrard has never done much against the Titans, and his best work on Sunday was handing the ball off 31 times to RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who finished with a career-best 186 yards. Garrard has just 288 yards passing and no touchdowns in his last two games, and while his legs are helping him quite a bit, his Fantasy value is taking a dive down the stretch. Don't start him in anything but the deepest of formats for Week 14 vs. Oakland, who have a solid pass defense.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (probable, wrist) was not listed among the inactives for Week 13 at Tennessee. Garrard will be looking to end his rough recent history against the Titans behind him. In his last four complete games vs. Tennessee, he has four touchdowns, five interceptions, two fumbles and two games without a touchdown. In his last five in Nashville, Garrard has two touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Analysis: Garrard had a passing game to forget in Week 12 against the Giants but saved his day a bit with a rushing score. The Titans have allowed an average of 16.3 Fantasy points to opposing QBs this season, held Matt Schaub to 178 yards passing last week and have given up just four multi-passing touchdown games in 2010. This matchup just doesn't bode particularly well for Garrard, so consider him a No. 2 Fantasy option at best for Week 13.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (wrist) was officially listed as probable Friday for Jacksonville's Week 13 game at Tennessee. On Sunday, Garrard will be looking to end his rough recent history against the Titans behind him. In his last four complete games vs. Tennessee, he has four touchdowns, five interceptions, two fumbles and two games without a touchdown. In his last five in Nashville, Garrard has two touchdowns and nine interceptions.

News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, who injured his left wrist on the final drive in Week 12 against the Giants, was able to practice on Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 13 against the Titans. Garrard was knocked out of a Week 6 loss to the Titans with a concussion. You always want a chance for redemption, especially in a division game, Garrard said. It is a game you have to have anyway, and they feel the same way. They are trying to get themselves back on the right track. It is a big game, period. It is a division game and that is really all you have to say. You dont really have to have any redemption or revenge or anything like that. It is a division game, so it is already big.
Analysis: Garrard was somewhat concerned about his wrist on Sunday, but he seems fine now that X-rays have showed no damage. "Yeah, my wrist is coming along just fine," he said. "Im happy with where its at, its still not 100 percent but its doing pretty good. Ill be fine." Unless he suffers a setback, then we anticipate him suiting up in Week 13. However, Garrard has been bitten by the turnover bug lately, so he remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 13.
News: The Jaguars official website reports Monday that QB David Garrard said his wrist is a little sore, but he doesn't anticipate any problems even though The Associated Press reports he is wearing a splint. Garrard said X-rays on his wrist were negative. He was injured on the final drive at the Giants on Sunday in Week 12. He finished the game 20 of 35 passing for 162 yards and no touchdowns. He rushed for 41 yards on six carries with a touchdown in the 24-20 loss.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Garrard's status heading into Week 13 against Tennessee. If he's able to play against the Titans as expected he would be considered a No. 2 Fantasy QB in the majority of leagues.
News: Although coach Jack Del Rio refused to say QB David Garrard was injured after the Jaguars loss in Week 12 against the Giants, Garrard opened up to reporters saying he injured his left wrist on the final drive, when he was hit numerous times and fumbled on the last play as Jacksonville was driving for the go-ahead score. I feel banged up. It looked like I hurt everything, Garrard said of a sack on a first-down play from the Giants 29-yard line with 1:51 to play. Probably just a sprain. I cant move it much."
Analysis: Garrard had a tale of two halves in Week 12 against the Giants. Garrard was efficient from the start as he completed 11 of 16 passes for 91 yards in the first half, but he led three scoring drives, including an impressive 5-yard touchdown scramble as he dodged numerous tacklers, and Jacksonville to a 17-6 halftime lead. But the Giants turned up the pressure in the second half and Garrard crumbled. He threw an interception on the opening drive of the second half and then lost a fumble on the last drive. Garrard finished 20 of 35 for 162 yards and no touchdowns. He rushed for 41 yards on six carries in the 24-20 loss. Consider Garrard more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 13 against the Titans, if healthy. Garrard suffered a concussion in Week 6 against Tennessee, completing just 7 of 12 passes for 49 yards and one interception before leaving the game.

Analysis: Garrard turned the ball over four times in Week 11 against the Browns, but managed to escape with a 24-20 win. Sadly, his turnovers caught up to him this week. He got his top target -- Mike Sims-Walker -- back in Week 12, but he wasn't 100 percent, so he lacked the explosiveness Garrard needed to make big plays. Hopefully, we are not seeing a late-season collapse by Garrard after he did so well in the middle of the season. Still, consider Garrard more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 13 against the Titans. Garrard suffered a concussion in Week 6 against Tennessee, completing just 7 of 12 passes for 49 yards and one interception before leaving the game. Garrard was hit a few times on the last drive against the Giants and was grimacing after the final sack of the game, but coach Jack Del Rio doesn't believe his QB sustained an injury. However, Garrard was spotted seated next to a pair of crutches after the game. He looked as though he might have been waiting for X-rays, but no injury has been reported as of yet. Keep tabs on his status leading up to Week 13.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard heads into Week 12 against the Giants needing four touchdown passes to surpass Mark Brunell for the most in one season in franchise history. Although, it's going to be tough for Garrard to accomplish that goal this week seeing how the Giants haven't allowed a QB to pass for more than three touchdowns this season. Peyton Manning and Jon Kitna have tossed three touchdowns against New York this year. QBs are averaging just 14.2 Fantasy points per week against New York, which is tied for eighth lowest in the NFL.
Analysis: The only time Garrard faced New York in his career was in 2006. He passed for 249 yards, but no touchdowns and still led Jacksonville to a win. He is 11-6 in his career against the NFC in 17 games, while passing for 3,815 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Garrard had a somewhat off game against the Browns in Week 11 as he threw three interceptions. Still, he passed for two scores without WR Mike Sims-Walker, who still might sit this week with an ankle injury, and now Garrard has 11 touchdown passes in his last six games. Consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 12.
News: Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard, who entered Week 11 having completed 75 percent or better of his passes in four of his last five games, struggled in a 24-20 victory over Cleveland on Sunday. Garrard, who was playing without one of his top receiving threats in Mike Sims-Walker (ankle), finished 20 of 34 (58.8%) for 254 yards and two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions, his first game with multiple picks since Week 2 against San Diego. His QB rating of 65.1 was the fourth-lowest of the season and he did little running the ball (nine yards and on two attempts) while being sacked four times.
Analysis: We thought Garrard was close to becoming a consistent Fantasy option but he regressed with this game. Garrard was responsible for turning the ball over on four consecutive Jaguars drives -- three interceptions and a fumble -- that derailed several Jacksonville chances in the third quarter. There were a few bright spots: he set a franchise record for consecutive completions dating back to Week 10 came with 17, and he hit six different receivers in the first half. With a road game against the New York Giants in Week 12, Garrard will likely make for a shaky Fantasy quarterback.
News: With Mike Sims-Walker listed as doubtful for the Jaguars' Week 11 game vs. the Browns, QB David Garrard's prospects get dimmer. Sims-Walker barely practiced this week with an ankle injury. Losing Sims-Walker means that Jacksonville loses its biggest threat at the position, likely replacing him with glorified special-teamer Kassim Osgood. We might also see more running and two-TE sets from the Jaguars.
Analysis: Garrard has accounted for 602 passing yards in his last two games and faces a Browns defense that has allowed nine passing touchdowns in their last four games. But it's hard to trust Garrard when he's without a big target, especially with no one really good coming in to replace him. We can't help but think Garrard will be a risk this week and can't recommend him as a safe No. 1 option. He's more of a good No. 2 choice.
News: At the beginning of the season, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard did not appear to be worth more than a Fantasy bye-week replacement but he has changed that mindset with strong performances in back-to-back games. In his last two contests both wins -- Garrard has accounted for 602 passing yards and his 342-yard game against Houston in Week 10 was the sixth-highest total among all NFL quarterbacks. He has also not thrown more than one interception in a game since Week 2. However Cleveland, Jacksonvilles Week 11 opponent, did harass New Orleans star QB Drew Brees into throwing four picks in their Week 7 matchup.
Analysis: Garrard has posted solid Fantasy numbers the last couple games but his value could be limited if he is without one of his top play-making receivers in Mike Sims-Walker (ankle injury). Garrard has spread the ball among several targets this season as at least five different players have caught a pass in each Jaguars game this season. Despite the possibility of Sims-Walker not playing, Garrard could record another solid game the Browns have allowed all but three opposing QBs this season score 20-plus Fantasy points. Consider him a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB because of the Browns lack of a sufficient pass-rush.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard led his team to victory in Week 10 against the Texans on the most exciting play in football -- the Hail Mary pass. On the last play of the game in a 24-all contest, Garrard let the ball fly down the left sideline for Mike Sims-Walker, who was in heavy coverage. Garrard overthrew Sims-Walker in the end zone, but Glover Quin, who had a career-high 13 tackles, was there to bat the ball down. Unfortunately, he hit it right to Mike Thomas at the 1-yard line. Thomas caught it and ran into the end zone for the game-winning score. "We definitely lucked out on that one," running back Maurice Jones-Drew said. "Mike Thomas was in the right place at the right time." Officially, it was a 50-yard score. Garrard finished 24 of 31 for 342 yards and two touchdowns, including a 52-yard completion to Zach Miller in the fourth quarter. Garrard also rushed for 35 yards.
Analysis: Garrard might be one of the most improved players in the NFL over the last few weeks. In his last five games, he has thrown 11 touchdowns to two interceptions. He looks very composed in the pocket and is beginning to get the pass protection he needs to be an effective QB. He has 584 passing yards in his last two games and is developing into quite a Fantasy option. Consider inserting Garrard into your starting Fantasy lineup for Week 11 when the Jags play the Browns.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard comes off the bye in Week 10 against the Texans looking for an encore performance after tying a Jaguars record with four touchdown passes in Week 8 against the Cowboys and also setting a franchise-best 157.8 passer rating. "We have to be able to build on it," Garrard said. "We can't just have one big game and turn around the other way. We have to be able to build on the confidence that we have now." Garrard has a good history against Houston. He is 5-2 in his career as a starter against the Texans and had a 90-plus passer rating in five of those seven games. Garrard led Jacksonville to a sweep of Houston in 2009, throwing for 452 yards and two touchdowns.
Analysis: The matchup in Week 10 sets up nicely for Garrard. The Texans have the league's worst pass defense, allowing 298.2 yards per game. Houston is accordingly allowing 25.5 Fantasy points per week, which is highest in the NFL. No QB has thrown for less than 200 yards or less than two touchdowns against Houston. This is definitely a week to consider starting Garrard in most Fantasy formats.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard played for the first time since Week 6 on Sunday of Week 8 at Dallas. Garrard, who returned from a concussion, may have had the game of his entire career in the 35-17 victory over the Cowboys in their home stadium. Garrard threw a career-high four touchdown passes and added a fifth touchdown rushing in the game. Garrard finished the first half a perfect 10 for 10 in passing and started the game with 12 straight completions, the longest such streak of this NFL season. Garrard finished 17 of 21 in the game for a season-high 260 yards with the four TDs, no interceptions and one rushing TD on two carries.
Analysis: Garrard was coming off missing a game due to concussion and the Jaguars were glad to have him back. His TD pass to Mike Sims-Walker in the first quarter was his first first-quarter TD pass in his last 23 starts. His 42-yard TD strike to Marcedes Lewis in the second quarter was the longest offensive play for the Jaguars all season. Needless to say, Garrard and the Jaguars had done nothing this year prior to the Week 8 game. Unfortunately, Garrard won't be able to carry this momentum as the Jaguars head to a bye week in Week 9. They return Week 10 against the poor secondary of the Houston Texans, however, so stash him in anticipation of that game.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard (concussion) will start against the Cowboys in the Week 8 contest on Sunday. Garrard was not listed among the team's inactives before the game.
Analysis: Garrard is healthy but that doesn't mean we recommend you start him against the Cowboys. He isn't a great Fantasy option. Dallas did give up more than 300 passing yards against Eli Manning in Week 7, but the Cowboys are allowing an average of 181 passing yards per game with only seven touchdowns. He should only be used as a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in the majority of leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (concussion) is probable for the Week 8 game against the Cowboys. He did not miss any practice time this week and he says team moral remains up. Everybodys upbeat," Garrard said. "They know its not doom and gloom, but there is a sense of urgency. Theres a feeling of it has to start getting done.He re-iterated his concussion was not evident on Wednesday saying he felt good and had no symptoms.
Analysis: Garrard isn't a great Fantasy option against the Cowboys. Dallas did give up more than 300 passing yards against Eli Manning in Week 7, but the Cowboys are allowing an average of 181 passing yards per game with only seven touchdowns. He should only be used as a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in the majority of leagues.
News: Now that he's been cleared to play, Jaguars QB David Garrard (concussion) is getting ready to start again Sunday. "I feel good,'' he said Wednesday. "I haven't had any recurring issues or any symptoms or anything.'' Garrard is expected to start in Week 8 at Dallas after being out in Week 7 at Kansas City. He was replaced by Todd Bouman against the Chiefs, but Bouman injured the ring finger on his throwing hand.
Analysis: Garrard isn't a great Fantasy option against the Cowboys. Dallas did give up more than 300 passing yards against Eli Manning in Week 7, but the Cowboys are allowing an average of 181 passing yards per game with only seven touchdowns. Keep an eye on Garrard's status prior to Sunday, but he should only be used as a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in the majority of leagues.
News: Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has been cleared to practice and play after passing post-concussion tests. Garrard passed the NFL-mandated tests Tuesday, then worked out at the facility. Coach Jack Del Rio said Monday that Garrard would start Week 8 at Dallas if he received clearance.
Analysis: The Jaguars (3-4) don't have many choices but to play Garrard. Backup Luke McCown is on injured reserve with a knee injury, Trent Edwards has a badly sprained thumb on his throwing hand and last week's starter, Todd Bouman, injured the ring finger on his throwing hand while making a tackle after his second interception. Newly acquired Patrick Ramsey is healthy, but still learning the offense. Eli Manning became the first player to pass for 300 yards against the Cowboys when he did it in Week 7. The Cowboys usually have a respectable pass defense, so we aren't expecting a big game from Garrard. He is at best a bye-week Fantasy replacement.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was back at the Jags' facility not wearing sunglasses on Monday, a sign that he's close to recovered from a concussion suffered in Week 6. He didn't play in Week 7 as Todd Bouman threw two touchdowns in a loss at Kansas City, but Garrard said he's feeling better. Between that and Bouman hurting his finger on Sunday, signs point to Garrard reclaiming his starting job in Week 8 against the Cowboys. Garrard said "a cloud rolled in and I couldn't focus" after suffering his concussion against Tennessee. "The next day was awful," he added. Garrard added that while his concussion won't alter his style of play , it has given him new perspective on life. "I have a loving family waiting for me to come home," he said.
Analysis: Garrard has been very inconsistent this season and with a tough road game at Dallas next up for him and the Jaguars, the matchup suggests that he'll struggle. Figure Garrard to be no better than a low-end one-week replacement option that you can find off waivers.
News: The Jaguars started QB Todd Bouman on Sunday in Week 7 at Kansas City with David Garrard (concussion) inactive and Trent Edwards (thumb) listed as the backup. Bouman was 18 of 34 passing for 222 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also added two carries for 8 yards. Bouman connected on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Jones-Drew, who was his leading receiver with five catches for 74 yards, and Mike Sims-Walker for a 9-yard touchdown. Bouman was making his first start since 2005, and he could start again in Week 8 at Dallas if Garrard and Edwards remain out or limited.
Analysis: We'll find out if Garrard can start against the Cowboys and what his status will be in Week 8. If he's able to return against the Cowboys then he would be a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in all leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (concussion) will not travel to Kansas City for Jacksonville's Week 7 game against the Chiefs, according to coach Jack Del Rio.
Analysis: Garrard has been as up and down as they come this season. In three games against Denver, Indy and Buffalo, he had eight touchdowns and one interception. In three games against San Diego, Philadelphia and Tennessee, he had one touchdown and six interceptions. That kind of inconsistency is just maddening to Fantasy owners, and Garrard should only be stashed away in deeper formats while he deals with this concussion. He's a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best when healthy.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (concussion) watched practice Friday and remains unlikely to play in Week 7 against the Chiefs.

In three games against San Diego, Philadelphia and Tennessee, he had one touchdown and six interceptions. News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (concussion) missed practice again Thursday as he stayed at home resting. Jacksonville plays at Kansas City in Week 7.
Analysis: Garrard has to be cleared by an independent physician before returning to action, and has obviously not yet been cleared for practice. The chances of him playing in Week 7 against the Chiefs look to be slim to none at this point, so just stash him Garrard away for now and look elsewhere for a No. 2 Fantasy QB in deeper formats.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars QB David Garrard (head) was not at the team facility Wednesday as Jacksonville began preparations for its Week 7 game at Kansas City. Garrard left Week 6 against Tennessee with a concussion in the second quarter.
Analysis: Garrard has to be cleared by an independent physician before returning to action, and has not yet been cleared for practice. Even if Garrard is healthy for Week 7, he will be facing a Kansas City defense that has allowed just six passing touchdowns in five games. Kansas City might be giving up close to 250 passing yards per game, but Garrard is not a recommended Fantasy start for Week 7.
News: With starter David Garrard and backup Trent Edwards both injured, the Jacksonville Jaguars are bringing back veteran quarterback Todd Bouman. The Jaguars re-signed Bouman on Tuesday. Garrard left Week 6 against Tennessee with a concussion in the second quarter, and Edwards injured his right thumb while playing the rest of the game. Coach Jack Del Rio said on his weekly radio show that "there's a strong possibility we won't have either guy" during practice Wednesday. The Jaguars travel to Kansas City in Week 7.
Analysis: Under the new NFL guidelines for players suffering concussions, Garrard has to be cleared by an independent physician before returning to action. He has not yet been cleared for practice and that is not a good thing in a short week. Even if Garrard is healthy for Week 7, he will be facing a Kansas City defense that has allowed just six passing touchdowns in five games. Kansas City might be giving up close to 250 passing yards per game, but Garrard is not a recommended Fantasy start for Week 7.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has been diagnosed with a concussion. Garrard left in the second quarter during Week 6 against the Titans after taking a big hit from Will Witherspoon. He was slow to get up and looked dazed sitting on the sideline before going to the locker room to get evaluated. Garrard was replaced by Trent Edwards and did not return to the game.
Analysis: Garrard was 7 for 12 for 49 yards with an interception before leaving with the game and was under constant pressure all night long. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor his status over the next week to see if he will be able to play in Week 7 against the Chiefs. Garrard had been playing better of late, throwing five touchdowns and only one interception in his last two games prior to Monday. He can be considered a No. 2 Fantasy QB, when healthy.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard left during Week 6 against the Titans with an undisclosed injury. Garrard was slow to get up after taking a big hit from Will Witherspoon in the second quarter. He completed 7 of his 12 passes for 49 yards with an interception prior to leaving the game.
Analysis: While there has been no official word on Garrard's injury, he looked dazed sitting on the sidelines and he will be evaluated at halftime. Fantasy owners should check back for more details as they become available.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will look to build off his three touchdown performance in Week 5 against the Bills when the Titans head to Jacksonville in Week 6. Garrard is quite familiar with the Titans having faced them 13 times in his career. Unfortunately, he has only won four of those contests while averaging just 143.5 yards passing a game. Tennessee is ranked 27th in pass defense, but have held opposing QBs to an average of 14.60 Fantasy points over the first five weeks of the season.
Analysis: Garrard has yet to throw for 200 yards this season, but has led the Jaguars to two straight wins and has five touchdowns and only one interception over that span. Jacksonville is a bit conservative on offense and normally don't take a lot of chances throwing the ball downfield. Instead, Garrard is asked to make short safe throws, leading to high completion but not a ton of yards. The Titans have been decent against the pass this season, but had a hard time slowing down Dallas' receivers on Sunday. While the Jaguars don't have quite the same firepower on offense as the Cowboys, they still have plenty of weapons at the skill positions that can find the end zone. Consider Garrard a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB heading into Week 6.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard had one of his most effective performances of the season in Week 5 at Buffalo. He completed 16 of 20 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once in the game. The three touchdowns matched a season-high for him for the season. The 178 yards were also a season best.
Analysis: Garrard has yet to throw for 200 yards this season, but he has put together back-to-back efficient games. They haven't been spectacular, but this is the type of quarterback Garrard is in Jacksonville's style of offense. He is asked to make a lot of safe throws, leading to high completion percentages and very few down-field looks. That makes him a viable No. 2 QB candidate to be used in case of injuries or as a bye-week replacement. He'll be up against the Titans in Week 6 and should be considered in that same role.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard heads into the Week 5 contest in Buffalo looking for his first 200-yard passing performance. Garrard's best total up until now has been the 173 yards he passed for in Week 2 at San Diego. He also threw four interceptions in that game. For the season, Garrard has completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 611 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. In the two wins this season, Garrard has completed 76.7 percent of his passes for 333 yards with five touchdowns and no picks with a 137.1 passer rating.
Analysis: Garrard has played four career games against the Bills, completing 77 of 117 passes for 808 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions with a 90.0 passer rating. He needs just 120 passing yards to reach 14,000 for his career. Because he's been so much better in wins than losses, and we believe the Jaguars have a good shot over the terrible Bills, that stands to reason that Garrard could have a good day in Week 5. The Bills are giving up the seventh-most average Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season and have allowed seven touchdown passes without intercepting a pass against the Packers, Patriots and Jets in their last three games. Garrard has the matchup on his side but is still just a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 5.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard scored on the Jaguars' opening drive on Sunday against the Colts. He faked a pitch on an option play and then scampered for 25 yards -- the longest run by any Jacksonville player in 2010 -- for a score. It was the team's first rushing touchdown of the year. With him having shaky performances through the first four weeks, fans brought in signs saying "Trade for Tebow". Garrard completed 17 of 22 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns and didn't throw an interception. In hopes of preventing more costly errors, Garrard used a lot of two- and three-step drops against Indianapolis -- getting the ball out quickly and not even trying to throw deep. He also wasn't sacked in the game. Garrard finished with 44 yards on the ground.
Analysis: Garrard threw five interceptions and was sacked nine times in consecutive 25-point losses to San Diego and Philadelphia, which were the worst in franchise history. During the week, Jacksonville picked up Trent Edwards off waivers to provide a backup/competitor for Garrard's starting role. Garrard needed a good performance to silent some of his critics, but will have to continue to produce to keep his job. Heading into Week 5, the Jaguars will face the Bills. Buffalo was awful against the run in Week 4, and will try to contain Maurice Jones-Drew. Garrard will have a chance to produce solid numbers again, but until he has consecutive good games, he should be viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy QB option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard's last two games have not been his best (five interceptions); as a result, Jacksonville claimed QB Trent Edwards on Tuesday. Garrard seemed unfazed by Edwards' arrival after Wednesday's practice. " I can't back away from the last couple of games, but that's the toughness of this league," Garrard said. "You're going to have tough ones and you've got to be able to bounce back from it. I know I will." Coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard looked like he lost confidence after the Week 3 loss to the Eagles, but did not hint at any change in Garrard's status as the team's starter. "As long as he's our best option, we'll continue to go with him," Del Rio said Monday.
Analysis: Del Rio and team owner Wayne Weaver challenged Garrard in January. Del Rio called Garrard a "second-tier quarterback," and Weaver said he needed to be more accountable and spend more time working with the team's young receivers. Garrard responded with what coaches and teammates called his best offseason. He even threw three TD passes in the opener. But poor decisions, bad throws and costly turnovers plagued him the last two weeks. Edwards' arrival could signal the eventual end of Garrard's tenure in Jacksonville. Only time will tell. Garrard is expected to start Week 4 against the Colts, but he still could be too risky of a Fantasy start. Only Kyle Orton has thrown for more than 200 yards against Indy this season. Consider Garrard at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Showing just how frustrated they are with quarterback David Garrard, the Jacksonville Jaguars claimed former Buffalo Bills starter Trent Edwards off waivers Tuesday. The move gives Edwards a fresh start after things went south in Buffalo and provides Jacksonville with a viable option behind Garrard, who threw four interceptions and was benched in a 25-point loss at San Diego in Week 2. He was even worse in Week 3 at home, completing 13 of 30 passes for 105 yards and an interception in another 25-point loss to Philadelphia. He also was sacked six times and botched a pitch to Maurice Jones-Drew. Coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard seemingly lost confidence following the sixth loss in his last seven starts. He also made it clear how he felt about his quarterback's play.
Edwards' arrival could signal the end of Garrard's tenure in Jacksonville. Only time will tell. If Garrard is starting Week 4 against the Colts, he still could be too risky of a Fantasy start. Only Kyle Orton has thrown for more than 200 yards against Indy this season.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard could not get anything going against the Eagles in Week 3. The 32-year-old completed just 13 of 30 passes for 105 yards in the 28-3 loss. Garrard's yards passing were his fewest since getting knocked out of a game early against Indianapolis in 2007. "He was ineffective today," coach Jack Del Rio said. He was also sacked six times in the game and threw an interception to Asante Samuel in the third quater. "We could never get a rhythm going, we could never get anything going really in the pass game," Garrard said. He was second on Jacksonville in rushing, carrying the ball eight times for 23 yards.
Analysis: Garrard finished Week 3 with a passer rating of 38.9, even lower than last week's 62.7 mark. He did not look sharp at all and had at least four other passes that could have been easily intercepted by the Eagles defense. He was under pressure the entire game and did not have the benefit of the running game as Philadelphia snuffed out many of Jacksonville's rushes. He had a worse performance on Sunday than he did in Week 2, when he was pulled for Luke McCown, but the starting job appears to be his for the time being. He will face off against a Colts defense next week that gave up 467 yards through the air, including one touchdown, to the Broncos in Week 3. Fantasy owners would be wise to stay away from Garrard in most leagues until he can prove to be valuable again.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has only faced his Week 3 foe once in his career, but the Eagles are well aware of what the 32-year-old brings to the game. "When he's on, he's on," Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said about Garrard. "He's been a little bit hot and cold, but when he's on he's one of the better quarterbacks." Garrard has completed 70.5 percent of his passes this season for 343 yards and four touchdowns. He also has four interceptions in 44 attempts. Opposing quarterbacks have fared well against the Eagles this season, averaging 261 yards per game with two touchdowns.
Analysis: Garrard completed 10 of 17 passes for 87 yards in his one career game against Philadelphia and even though he did not account for a score, he led his team to the win. He was benched late in Week 2 in favor of backup QB Luke McCown but re-entered the game after his replacement got banged up. He has a favorable matchup against the Eagles in Week 3, especially since his scrambling ability will help him open up some plays. Consider Garrard as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB against the Eagles on Sunday.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had an uncharacteristic four-interception game on Sunday in San Diego. He went deep on first drive of the game, but it was intercepted by Antoine Cason. He had three interceptions in the first half and had his day end as he was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of backup QB Luke McCown. Garrard admitted he had a bad performance. "It was a horrible day at the office," he said. "It's a day that you don't want to have. Honestly, if I could erase my memory from today, I would." McCown would have to leave the game with 41 seconds left as he was shaken up on a run, forcing Garrard back into the game. He completed a pass to Mike Sims-Walker for the Jaguars only touchdown of the day. Garrard finished the game completing 15 of 23 passes for 173 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. "We need him to be more consistent. I thought he missed some easy things today. We had a tough one today," coach Jack Del Rio said. "We'll get back to work and look better next week."
Analysis: Garrard was one of three starting quarterbacks to be benched on Sunday, joining Jason Campbell and Vince Young. The 32-year-old Garrard did not look good at all in Week 2, but some of his passes were tipped, causing the interceptions. Regardless, his performance left a lot to be desired. Heading into Week 3, Jacksonville will host Philadelphia. The Eagles gave up 335 yards through the air in Week 2 against Detroit, so Garrard on paper has a favorable matchup. Still, Garrard is just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB and shouldn't be in starting lineups until bye weeks begin.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was active for the team's Week 2 matchup with the Chargers on Sunday. He'd been dealing with a strained back all week and sat out practice on Thursday.
Analysis: Garrard is 32-years-old and will likely continue to deal with some pain throughout the season. He had a solid Week 1 as he tossed for 170 yards and three scores. n one career start versus the Chargers, Garrard threw for 189 yards and two scores and no interceptions. Garrard is usually a mistake-free quarterback, which is great for Fantasy owners, but he doesn't normally put up huge numbers. We consider him a low-end No. 2 QB in Week 2.
News: Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has returned to practice one day after sitting out with a strained back. Garrard, 32, sat out practice Thursday when a muscle in his middle back he says "didn't feel right" while warming up. The QB, back on the field Friday, says his back "is definitely OK," he just wanted to be smart with it. He says he has been "getting a lot of treatment and they've got it feeling brand new." Coach Jack Del Rio says the strain was so insignificant he usually doesn't put it on the team's injury report. Del Rio says he put it on because "everybody wants to know about the quarterback. If the quarterback burps people want to know. He had a belch" on Thursday. Jacksonville plays at San Diego in Week 2. Garrard is listed as probable for the game.
Analysis: Whether Garrard is 100 percent or not come Sunday will remain to be seen, he is expected to start against the Chargers. In one career start versus the Chargers, Garrard threw for 189 yards and two scores and no interceptions. Much like Week 1, the Jaguars and Garrard will look to stay mistake free. Garrard threw for 170 yards against Denver while completing 16 of 21 passes -- his most accurate performance since 2007. Heading into San Diego, he'll be taking on a Chargers defense that allowed 62 yards through the air in Week 1. That is a bit deceiving as the Chargers played in heavy rain for most of the game. In 2009, San Diego gave up just 22 touchdowns through the air, so Garrard has a test heading into Sunday. Owners should view him as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB this week.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard (back) was limited in practice on Thursday. In one start versus the Chargers, Garrard threw for 189 yards and two scores and no interceptions. Much like Week 1, the Jaguars and Garrard will look to stay mistake free. Garrard threw for 170 while completing 16 of 21 passes - his most accurate performance since 2007.
Analysis: Garrard has been limited in practice, and probably won't want to sit in Week 2. Garrard has struggled the past two seasons, but looked good in Week 1. Heading into San Diego, he'll be taking on a Chargers defense that allowed 62 yards through the air in Week 1. That is a bit deceiving as the Chargers game was played in heavy rain for most of the game. In 2009, San Diego gave up just 22 touchdowns through the air, so Garrard has a test heading into Sunday. Owners should view him as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB this week.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard continued to own the Broncos in his career as he led Jacksonville to a Week 1 win over Denver on Sunday afternoon. Garrard completed 16 of 21 passes for 170 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran seven times for 10 yards. "Everybody in this room believes in Dave and understands he's our leader," said TE Marcedes Lewis, who caught a pair of TDs in the win. "This is big for him. It's big for his confidence. If Dave is going to be great, then everyone else has to be great around him."
Analysis: Garrard has now completed 73.3 percent of the passes he's attempted against the Broncos in three career meetings with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Those of you who took a shot with him in deeper two-QB leagues for Week 1 were obviously richly rewarded. In Week 2, Garrard will get a tougher test as Jacksonville heads all the way west to take on the Chargers. He will certainly be a hot waiver-wire pickup as a potential sleeper No. 2 Fantasy QB in the majority of formats, but should continue to only be started in deeper two-QB leagues for that contest.
News: The Jaguars host the Broncos in Week 1, and Jacksonville QB David Garrard should be looking forward to facing Denver. In two career games against them, Garrard has completed a ridiculous 72.2 percent (39 of 54) of his passes for 430 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. However, the most recent of those games came two years ago, and Denver ranked third against the pass in 2009.
Analysis: Along with his solid history against Denver, Garrard also has his superb career stats at home going his way in Week 1. He has thrown 40 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions during his career at EverBank Field. With the Broncos missing superb pass rusher Elvis Dumervil, Garrard should find plenty of time to pass on Sunday and might well be worth a look in deeper two-QB Fantasy leagues as a secondary option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was sharp on all but a single pass during Saturday's preseason game against the Buccaneers. He led three scoring drives that resulted in Josh Scobee field goals, and a fourth that ended when he was picked off by Tampa Bay LB Barrett Ruud at the 1-yard line. Garrard completed 24 of 31 passes for 211 yards, hooking up with 10 different receivers.
Analysis: Garrard has improved in each preseason game, and aside from the errant pass to Ruud, looked good on Saturday. But he's never been a Fantasy-friendly quarterback, averaging 15 TD passes and just over 3,600 yards the last two seasons. And with a lack of weapons at receiver this year, we don't expect that to change. He's a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option at QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard says he has more weapons than ever because of depth at wide receiver and tight end. "I think we're not limited with the skill players we have," he said. "Before, where we had bigger receivers, the depth, at times, wasn't there. Now we have guys that you can get the ball to them 5 yards and they can turn it into 60 yards."
Analysis: Garrard might be excited about the talent at WR and TE, but he hasn't done a lot in the preseason. He has completed 61.1 percent of his passes, but he has only one touchdown and 114 yards. His backup, Luke McCown, has been more impressive with 396 yards and four touchdowns. Garrard was knocked out of the last preseason game against Miami, but it's nothing serious. Garrard has thrown for a lot of yards the last few seasons, but he throws as many interceptions as touchdowns. He is at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB to open the season.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard left Saturday's game against the Dolphins after having the wind knocked out of him. He was hit in the abdomen by a defender after throwing a pass early in the second quarter and remained down on the field for several moments before walking off the field and being replaced by Luke McCown. "I was trying to get my breath back, but then it made my head light trying to get back up so I told myself I wasn't going to get up to try and run another play," Garrard said. "I wasn't really hurt, but I just couldn't get my breath back." He finished 6 for 8 with 79 yards passing, connecting with Mike Thomas on a 2-yard touchdown pass.
Analysis: Garrard doesn't appear to be injured, and looked better in Week 2 than he did in the preseason opener, during which he struggled. But he's never been a Fantasy-friendly quarterback, averaging 15 TD passes and just over 3,600 yards the last two seasons. And with a lack of weapons at receiver this season, we don't expect that to change. He's a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option at QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard showed signs of rust in Friday's preseason opener against the Eagles. He led the team to just one first down in three possessions, finishing 5 of 10 for 35 yards. "We've got to do a better job getting first downs and keeping the offense on the field," Garrard said. "They did a good job stopping us at times, but a lot of times we were stopping ourselves."
Analysis: Garrard wasn't sharp Friday and the offense struggled, but it was just their first game. It's far too early to be concerned about their inability to move the ball, as offenses typically come around later than defenses. Garrard is not a Fantasy-friendly quarterback -- especially with a lack of weapons at receiver -- averaging 15 TD passes and just over 3,600 yards the last two seasons. He's a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option at QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has been looking sharper in passing drills after a week of training camp but still takes sacks head coach Jack Del Rio isn't happy about. "I don't want him taking the abuse," Del Rio said, "I don't want him to have lost yardage."
Analysis: Garrard has been sacked 42 times in each of the last two seasons, which is double his numbers in 2006 and 2007. It's no wonder Del Rio is losing patience. He could probably deal with it if Garrard had a better touchdown-to-interception ratio in his career (66-to-39), but Garrard passes for a lot of empty yards. The Jaguars still have a lot of questions at wide receiver, so he is at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB on Draft Day.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard suffered cramps during practice Friday, and was forced to watch the rest of the session from the sideline.
Analysis: Garrard will be fine. Plenty of players are having conditioning issues at the start of training camp. He's been a disappointment since his breakout 2007 season; over the last two years, Garrard has a 30-23 touchdown-interception ratio while being sacked 42 times in both 2008 and 2009. We consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB, worthy of a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: Jaguars QB Luke McCown said during an interview on Sirius NFL Radio that he's the backup and David Garrard is the starter for 2010. "It's David's job," McCown said. "There's been a lot more made about it being a competition than there really should be. If anybody even hints to me about the idea of it being an open competition, I'm all for it. But that's not the case. ... I gladly work my tail off every day. I approach every rep in order to be the starter. There doesn't have to be a sense of, 'It's an open competition.' I'm going to do my best to push David to be better because if he's better, our team is better. In the offseason, I think it's easy to get caught up in individual competitions and battles. This thing is still about being a team and going out and winning a championship. That's got to be the goal year-round. That's the goal for me."
Analysis: McCown has attempted only four passes over the past two seasons after starting three games for the Buccaneers in 2007. Garrard has started every game for Jacksonville since signing a six-year, $60 million contract extension in the 2008 offseason. Garrard, though, has failed to recapture the magic of his 2007 season when he threw 18 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Garrard has a 30-23 touchdown-interception ratio the past two years and was sacked 42 times in both those seasons. We still consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB, and he's worth a late-round pick in all leagues. McCown should not be drafted in any formats as long as he's the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that even though Jaguars QB David Garrard threw his first interception of the week during OTA workouts on Thursday, it doesn't appear to matter on his standing on the depth chart. The paper reports that "Garrard appears entrenched in the quarterback job. Luke McCown doesn't seem to be pushing him."
Analysis: We expect Garrard to start for the Jaguars this year, and he should be considered a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB. While McCown could make things interesting with a strong training camp, Garrard would have to play poorly to lose his job. Plan on drafting Garrard with a late-round pick in all leagues, and leave McCown on the waiver wire as long as he's the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is expecting QB David Garrard to play better in 2010. Koetter said the criticism of Garrard this offseason is unfair. "You guys have beat the David thing to death," Koetter said. "I think that's been well-documented. Dave says it himself. Dave has to play better, and then I say every time I talk to the media, we have to play better around Dave." Koetter thinks the offense will be upgraded this year. To start with, he feels the line will do a better job of protecting Garrard than it did last year. "Last year, those two rookie tackles [Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton] were hanging on just to learn the vocabulary, just to learn what they're doing," Koetter said. "Now we have two of the most athletic tackles in the league, so in the offseason, we've studied different ways we could use those tackles in space, tackle pulling plays, tackle screen plays. I think you will see some different wrinkles to take advantage of what those two guys can do athletically." Koetter also said Garrard has more depth at WR with Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Troy Williamson. He's been working with his receivers a lot this offseason. "I think you will find that most of the top offenses, the quarterbacks and the key receivers get a chance to work together," Koetter said.
Analysis: We like Garrard as a No. 2 Fantasy QB. He's a good reserve to have on your bench, and he could start for your team when he has a favorable matchup. He's worth drafting with a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: The official team website for the Jaguars reports that QB David Garrard had a solid workout Monday. Garrard, who was working without two of his top receivers in Mike Sims-Walker and Mike Thomas because of injuries, seldom threw incomplete, according to the report. "I thought David and the receiving corps were sharp today," Del Rio said. "You can already see the timing in some routes being improved." Garrard is the symbol of Del Rio's all-in attitude this offseason. "This is a window of opportunity for us and for him. We have to get over the hump. We have to find a way to get to the playoffs. Our goal is to win the division," QB coach Mike Shula said.
Analysis: We like Garrard as a No. 2 Fantasy QB. He's a good reserve to have on your bench, and he could start for your team when he has a favorable matchup. He's worth drafting with a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said in an interview with the team's official website that QB David Garrard is the starter for 2010, but backup Luke McCown could get an extended look in training camp. "We've got to play better around Dave." Koetter said. "If you look at the elite passing teams in the NFL, the quarterback and the receivers are thinking one step ahead of the defense. We've been really trying to eliminate the gray. If it's this, we're doing this. For Dave, he's clearly 'The Man.' Hes got hungry receivers. Dave's been doing a great job in quarterback school and in mini-camp of communicating." Koetter was asked if McCown could push Garrard for playing time. "Even though Luke was our No. 2 last year, he didn't take many reps," Koetter said. "We haven't had much chance to see him operate in our system. Minicamp was his first chance to get equal reps. This is a time for Luke to show he can compete with Dave. He's athletic, he's sharp. Can he push Dave when they're hitting you for real? We like what we see out of Luke in the meeting room and what we saw of him in minicamp."
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was challenged by his head coach, criticized by his team owner and chastised by his fan base. His response? He insists he's had the best offseason of his career. He has been working with young receivers, taking on a leadership role and doing everything he can to make Jacksonville's offense more potent. "I think any time any man is challenged it's going to bring something out of you," Garrard said Sunday. "It should. If another man is going to challenge you, and you are really a man, then you're going to rise to the occasion. I want to be better. I want to be greater."
Analysis: Garrard took over the starting job in 2007, had 18 TD passes and just three interceptions and led the Jaguars to their first playoff victory since 2000. He was rewarded with the richest contract in team history but his numbers have dipped since. He finished with 15 TD passes and 13 interceptions in 2008, and had 15 TD passes and 10 INTs last season. He also fumbled 13 times (lost seven) in 2009, was sacked 42 times and knocked down even more often. With a limited receiving corps beyond Mike Sims-Walker, there's not a lot to love about Garrard for Fantasy purposes. Keep him on the backburner as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB. He might not even be worth a draft pick this summer.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard said in an interview with CBSSports.com that he was pleased with his performance in 2009, but he hopes to improve next season. "I thought it was decent at times," said Garrard, who completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 3,597 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. "At times I thought it could have been a little bit better. It definitely wasn't my best year, but it was good enough to be an alternate in the Pro Bowl. Being able to build on some of the things I was able to do this year, and that we have a young team, there's nowhere but up to go. As long as everyone sticks together and works hard and has the same goals in mind than we can do our thing."
Analysis: Garrard talked about his young receiving corps, which features Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas, Zach Miller and Jarrett Dillard. He also has a tremendous weapon in the backfield in RB Maurice Jones-Drew. We like Garrard as a No. 2 Fantasy QB. He's a good reserve to have on your bench, and he could start for your team when he has a favorable matchup. He's worth drafting with a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports Jaguars QB David Garrard will be the third quarterback for the AFC in the Pro Bowl. Garrard was named because Peyton Manning is playing in the Super Bowl and three other quarterbacks pulled out because of injuries. Matt Schaub of Houston will start for the AFC with Vince Young of Tennessee and Garrard as the backups. The three quarterbacks voted to the Pro Bowl were Manning, Tom Brady and Philip Rivers. But Brady and Rivers pulled out and Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers passed. That opened the door for Garrard, who is willing to play in the game.
Analysis: Garrard completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 3,597 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2009. He is a No. 2 Fantasy QB heading into 2010 despite being named as a Pro Bowl replacement.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard finished the season with a productive game on the road at Cleveland. Garrard was 22 of 39 for 202 yards, two touchdowns and one interception at the Browns. He also added five carries for 40 yards. His two touchdowns went to rookie TE Zach Miller, who was filling in for the injured Marcedes Lewis (head).
Analysis: Garrard ended the season with a good game on the road, where he struggled all year, but the Jaguars will miss the playoffs in 2009. Garrard will enter the offseason with questions about his status as the starter for 2010, but we expect him to be the No. 1 QB in Jacksonville depending on what happens with the Jaguars in the NFL Draft. Still, Garrard is a No. 2 Fantasy QB and only worth drafting with a late-round pick.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard continued his road struggles at New England on Sunday. Garrard was 19 of 25 passing for 185 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. He did score a rushing touchdown with four carries for 10 yards.
Analysis: Garrard will look to correct his road woes in the season finale in Week 17 at Cleveland. That's a favorable matchup for him, but he should still be considered a No. 2 Fantasy QB against the Browns.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, who had just 139 yards passing against the Dolphins last week, bounced back with one of his best statistical performances of the season Week 15 against the Colts. He completed 23 of 40 passes for 223 yards and threw three touchdown passes for only the second time this season.
Analysis: Garrard has played 14 games this season and has gone without a passing touchdown in seven of them. That's what you'd call inconsistent. He's capable of putting up big numbers in the right matchups, but his inconsistency makes him just a No. 2 quarterback in Fantasy. Treat him as such Week 16 at New England.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard did not fare well against the Colts when the two teams met back in September. As the Jaguars get set to host the undefeated Colts Week 15 on Thursday night, Garrard only managed 122 yards on 14 completions against them without throwing any touchdowns or interceptions. He wasn't so great last week, either, against Miami. In that game, the Jaguars QB managed just 139 yards on 11 completions with no scores and it is not like he's been running the ball well, either.
Analysis: The Colts do not possess a very good pass defense but they are undefeated for a reason. They are a very good football team. Garrard actually has as many 300-yard passing games in his last five (1) than does Peyton Manning but he's only thrown for four touchdowns over that span while Manning did that in Week 14 alone. Garrard may also be without top wideout Mike Sims-Walker for the game and that hurts his value as well. At best, we can only call Garrard a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 15 on Thursday night.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed just 11 of 26 passes for 139 yards in a Week 14 loss to Miami. He also ran six times for 26 yards.
Analysis: Garrard is prone to having a stinker like this now and again, but we expected more from him against a Miami secondary that can give up yards by the bunch. In Week 15, Garrard will take on the Colts, who could be resting some starters as they've clinched home field advantage. Earlier this season, Garrard had just 122 yards against Indy. Garrard will only be worth using as an emergency No. 2 option in deeper leagues for that matchup.
News: The Jaguars have listed WR Mike Sims-Walker as doubtful for Week 14 vs. the Dolphins with a calf injury that kept him out of practice on Thursday and Friday. Mike Thomas is expected to start in his place across from Torry Holt. This doesn't bode well for David Garrard, who will have to make due with Holt and a slew of inexperienced receivers.
Analysis: Garrard is no longer a viable option as anything more than a middle- to low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB. Consider all other options before settling on Garrard in Week 14.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard had another stellar game at home against the Texans on Sunday. Garrard was 15 of 28 passing for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He also had eight carries for 13 yards.
Analysis: Garrard plays at home against Miami in Week 14, so look for him to have another solid game. Consider him a sleeper against the Dolphins and view him as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had a solid day through the air but struggled in the red zone as the Jags lost to the 49ers 20-3. Garrard completed 25 of his 36 passes in the game for a total of 307 yards. Garrard did not throw a TD pass or an interception in the game but did lose two fumbles deep into San Francisco territory. He also carried the ball twice in the game for 10 yards. Garrards passer rating on the day was 95.5.
Analysis: Garrard had the potential to put up huge numbers against San Francisco in Week 12 but his inability to get the job done in the red zone left Fantasy owners with just average numbers for the week. Garrard and the Jaguars take on Houston for the second time this season in Week 13. In Week 3 at Houston, Garrard completed 18 of his 30 passes for 214 yards. He did not throw a TD pass or interception in that game but did run for a touchdown. Think of him as a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 13.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard will face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 12. Garrard has thrown one touchdown pass in each of his last three games but only has 3 TDs and five picks in his last five. The 49ers, however, rank as the 3rd-worst pass defense in the NFL right now.
Analysis: You have to look where Garrard is playing -- on the road. He only has one passing touchdown in five road games, and his last trip to the West Coast was a disaster with 188 passing yards, no touchdowns and two fumbles at Seattle. The 49ers pass defense isn't great, but they have done well at home. Matt Ryan is the only quarterback to pass for multiple touchdowns in San Francisco, and the 49ers have only allowed three passing touchdowns with eight interceptions at home. Garrard won't be horrible this week, but you can expect another game with less than 15 Fantasy points. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard led his team to a win over Buffalo in Week 11 but he wasn't all that good with the ball. Garrard finished with 215 passing yards on 21 of 30 throwing. He had an interception and a fumble in the game but did manage to throw a touchdown pass late in the game. His 3-yard TD hook up with Mike Sims-Walker in the 4th quarter gave the Jaguars the lead for good. Garrard added 16 rushing yards in the game on six carries.
Analysis: Garrard had two turnovers on Sunday against the Bills and snapped a string of two straight games without an interception before the Week 11 game. Garrard has three touchdown passes since Week 4 of the season and is always a low-end Fantasy option. That wont change in Week 12 at San Francisco. The 49ers are bad against the pass but that still doesnt make Garrard anything but a poor injury-replacement option.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard faces Buffalo in Week 11. Garrard faced the Bills once in 2008 and threw for just 165 yards with an interception in that game. Garrard had one of his better games this season in Week 10 at the Jets. He rushed for a touchdown in that one and added a passing TD with 221 yards through the air.
Analysis: Buffalo, despite being a poor team, are one of the better pass defenses in the NFL this season and that doesn't bode well for Garrard. Garrard really only has appeal as a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 11.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 16 of 21 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown in a Week 10 win over the Jets. He also ran six times for 11 yards and a score, but did fumble once.
Analysis: Garrard had just one touchdown in his last four games before Sunday, so this outing was clearly his best one in a while. In Week 11, Jacksonville will host Buffalo, who have a pretty solid pass defense. Continue to use Garrard in just deeper formats.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for 264 yards and a touchdown pass in Week 9 against Kansas City. He completed 18 of 27 passes and did not throw an interception.
Analysis: For Garrard, it was his first touchdown pass in four weeks. He has one of the better young receivers in the NFL in Mike Sims-Walker, with whom he connected for a 61-yard touchdown in Week 9. That's enough to make Garrard a worthy No. 2 QB in most leagues for Week 10 at the N.Y. Jets. He is a suitable bye week or injury replacement option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard failed to get the best of Tennessee for a second time in 2009 during a 30-13 Week 8 loss. Garrard shredded Tennessee for 323 yards when the Jaguars routed the Titans 37-17 in Week 4. They never let him get started this time, sacking him four times, intercepting him twice and hitting him repeatedly. Garrard completed just 14 of 27 passes for 139 yards. He rushed for 22 yards while not recording one touchdown.
Analysis: Garrard has no touchdowns and four interceptions in his last three games since that Week 4 romp of the Titans, which included three scores. Garrard is one of the toughest quarterbacks to gauge in Fantasy. He really lacks consistency and that's what is holding him back from being a high-end Fantasy option. Garrard is consider more of a sleeper Fantasy QB for Week 9 against Kansas City since the Chiefs have a pretty poor secondary.
News: In the Jaguars last game against the Titans in Week 4, QB David Garrard threw for 323 yards and tied his career high with three TD passes. He also ran eight times for 38 yards and lost a fumble. The Titans are last in the NFL in pass defense.
Analysis: Garrard should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy QB this week against the Titans. Garrard has been better at home than on the road, but the Titans are a great matchup for him as he showed in the Week 4 meeting.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had a solid performance in Week 6 against the Rams but failed to throw a touchdown pass. He went 30 for 43 in the game, gaining a total of 335 yards. He was intercepted twice in the game by Rams linebackers however, with Leonard Little going 36 yards the other way for a touchdown. He also carried the ball four times for 31 yards. Garrard finished with a passer rating of 73.3 with the performance.
Analysis: Garrard has failed to score a touchdown in each of his past two games after breaking out for three TDs in Week 4 against the Titans. He threw all over a weak Rams secondary but couldn't get one into the end zone. The Jaguars have a bye in Week 7 then face the Titans in Week 8. The Titans' secondary is awful and Garrard torched it for three TDs and 323 yards in Week 4. Garrard will likely be a highly recommended option for that game.
News: Jacksonville was embarrassed Week 5 against the Seahawks as they lost 41-0 in Seattle. Quarterback David Garrard threw for 188 yards on 18 of 31 passing and obviously did not score. Garrard will attempt to rebound in Week 6 against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams are among the worst defensive clubs in football. Garrard has never faced the Rams.
Analysis: Garrard went off Week 4 against Tennessee with three TD passes and 323 yards and the Titans are only slightly worse against the pass than are the Rams. With the game in Jacksonville, we expect much bigger things this time around for the Jaguars' signal caller. Treat him as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy option Week 6.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had a dreadful performance Week 5 against the Seahawks in a 41-0 loss. Garrard completed 18 of his 31 passes in the game for a total of 188 yards. He obviously failed to throw a TD pass and was fortunately not intercepted. However, he did lose two fumbles in the game. Garrard also ran the ball once for 1 yard. Garrard was certainly hampered by the absense of Mike Sims-Walker who was held out of the game for a violation of team rules.
Analysis: This was Garrard's worst performance since Week 1 at Indianapolis when he threw for only 122 yards. Garrard went off Week 4 against Tennessee with three TD passes and 323 yards. Despite this poor performance, the Jaguars do host St. Louis in Week 6 which is a more than favorable match-up. He'll rebound strong and hopefully have Mike Sims-Walker back Week 6. Think of him as a low-end No. 1 option for that matchup.
News: Thanks to the emergence of WR Mike Sims-Walker, Jaguars QB David Garrard has been a solid stat producer of late. Garrard has six total touchdowns in his last three games with at least 25 yards rushing in each and 275 yards in two of the three. Garrard will play at Seattle in Week 5 against a Seahawks defense that has struggled in their last three games since shutting out the Rams in Week 1. Seattle has given up five passing touchdowns and well over 500 yards in their last two games, both losses.
Analysis: Simply put, Garrard has been too hot to consider for the Fantasy bench and his matchup against the Seahawks is actually better than Seattle's 16th-ranked pass defense suggests. Consider Garrard a quality No. 1 Fantasy QB for Week 5.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 27 of 37 passes for 323 yard and three touchdowns in a Week 4 win over the Titans. He also ran eight times for 38 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Garrard's matchup looked like a nice one heading into Week 4, and he produced stellar numbers as expected against the sorry Titans. Garrard now has two solid outings and two stinkers this season, and will try to produce again in Week 5 at Seahawks. Like the Titans, Seattle is a pretty bad team, so Garrard could be a nice low-end No. 1 option.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard has thrown 2 touchdown passes this season but both came Week 2 against Arizona. He threw for 282 yards that game and has just 336 in his other two. Garrard and the Jaguars face Tennessee in Week 4 and the Titans have been among the worst NFL pass defenses in the league.
Analysis: Garrard threw for 350 yards in two games against the Titans last season with 1 TD pass and 3 interceptions. That said, last year's Titans team was among the best in football and this year's version is absolutely horrendously bad thus far. QBs have thrown for 7 touchdowns against them and we think this could be Garrard's best week yet. Treat him as a solid No. 2 Fantasy option for the week.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard had a modest start Week 3 against the Texans in a 31-24 win over the Texans. He went 18 for 30 through the air for 214 yards. He did not throw a TD pass or an interception in the game. Garrard carried the ball five times in the contest for 29 yards and the touchdown.
Analysis: Garrard has eclipsed the 200-yard mark in each of his past two games after accummulating only 122 passing yards in Week 1 at Indianapolis. This was his best game in terms of passer rating this season, posting an 81.8 mark. Garrard and the Jacksonville offense isn't all that potent through the air, making Garrard just a one-week replacement most weeks. The Jags face a tough Tennessee defense Week 4, making Garrard a low-end option for that game.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will face a division opponent in Week 3 at Houston. In two games against the Texans last season, he totaled 523 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Analysis: Garrard threw for 287 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Houston last season. The Texans have allowed 240.5 yards passing per game over the first two weeks of the season. They have allowed three touchdowns with two interceptions and just one sack. We consider Garrard a No. 2 QB option this week and he should only be considered as a starter if an injury replacement is needed.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard was quite shaky until late in Week 2's loss to the Cardinals. Garrard finished with two touchdown passes but they did not come until the 2nd half and after the game was already largely in favor of the Cardinals. Garrard finished 23 for 43 for 282 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He hooked up with Marcedes Lewis for a 25-yard score in the 3rd quarter and added a 19-yard TD pass to Mike Sims-Walker in the 4th quarter. Garrard also rushed four times for 27 yards. Garrard fumbled three times and lost one of them for a turnover.
Analysis: Garrard only totaled 122 passing yards Week 1 against the Colts and has looked pretty dismal as a QB thus far this season, as have the Jaguars' offense. Garrard should have a little better Week 3 at Houston but he's nothing more than a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will face a non-division opponent in Week 2 against Arizona. The Cardinals allowed 182 yards in Week 1 against San Francisco. Niners QB Shaun Hill threw one touchdown pass and was sacked four times.
Analysis: Garrard could be a sleeper in larger formats this league. The Cardinals are a West Coast team traveling to the East Coast and that has led to sluggish performances in the past. Fantasy owners in leagues that require two QBs or in situations where they need a replacement QB can think about using the Jaguars' QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 14 of 28 passes for 122 yards in a Week 1 loss to the Colts. He also ran four times for 14 yards.
Analysis: The Colts were stingy through the air in 2008 and they played well again on Sunday as they held Garrard to very pedestrian statistics. In Week 2, the Jaguars will host Arizona. Continue to use Garrard in only the deepest of Fantasy leagues that require two starting QBs as a No. 2 option. His value really lies more as a bye-week replacement than anything.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard absolutely owned the Colts, his Week 1 opponents, the last time he faced them. Last season, in Jacksonville, Garrard lit them up for 329 yards on 28 of 41 passing with one touchdown and one interception. He also found paydirt on the ground. Of course, he fared far worse the first time they played last season, at Indy where Week 1 will be played, as he went 16 of 22 for 167 yards and a pick.
Analysis: Garrard doesn't have the best history against the Colts with 904 yards in his last five games and three touchdowns with four interceptions. Garrard passed for career-high 3,620 yards last season for the Jags, but he wasn't a No. 1 Fantasy QB because he threw just 15 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. Garrard definitely has the ability to be a sleeper in Fantasy, but we envision as nothing more than a backup in Week 1. Another thing to keep in mind is Indy led the NFL last year with only six passing touchdowns allowed.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 8 of 14 passes for 93 yards and one interception during Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles. He played in the first half before giving way to Todd Bouman.
Analysis: Garrard has had a decent preseason and has made a few big plays at times. But his biggest concern is developing rapport with his receivers. Garrard passed for 3,620 yards in 2008. However, he wasn't a No. 1 Fantasy QB because he threw just 15 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. Garrard definitely has the ability to be a sleeper in Fantasy, but we envision as nothing more than a backup Fantasy QB Draft Day.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard didn't do much in his lone quarter of work Monday night in the preseason opener at Miami. He was 4 of 7 passing for 22 yards and failed to get Jacksonville on the scoreboard. He did connect with new WR Torry Holt for one pass on a 10-yard gain. "I thought we did some good things pretty good, but there were things we need to get better at," Garrard said of the offense. "I saw a lot of good things. The receivers are doing a great job. If we can get a little bit more time and get the ball to them then I know we are going to have a great time this year."
Analysis: Garrard will get better with more preseason work. He didn't have WR Mike Walker (ankle), and his development will help. We still like Garrard as a No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a late-round pick. The good thing about Garrard as a bye-week replacement is he's safe because he doesn't make too many mistakes, but he also doesn't post overwhelming stats.
News: The Jaguars need help at WR, reports the Florida Times-Union, but QB David Garrard sees talent in the new players on the team. The paper reports the receivers, lacking a veteran presence and held back by first-round busts Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, could finally be on the road toward making a significant contribution, with the help of recent addition Torry Holt, holdover Mike Walker and rookies Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood. "We definitely have a playoff-caliber team here," Garrard said. "(But) talking about it is not going to get it done. I really feel like (coach Jack Del Rio) and (GM) Gene Smith have done a great job of bringing in talent around here to help us get back to the playoffs."
Analysis: Garrard also got some help up front with the Jaguars drafting two offensive tackles on the first day of the NFL Draft. The Jaguars took OT Eugene Monroe from Virginia at No. 8 overall and OT Eben Britton from Arizona at No. 39 overall. All the extra players around Garrard will help. He enters this season as a No. 2 Fantasy QB with upside and is worth a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard got some more help on his offensive line when the Jaguars took two offensive tackles on the first day of the NFL Draft. The Jaguars took OT Eugene Monroe from Virginia at No. 8 overall and OT Eben Britton from Arizona at No. 39 overall. The Jaguars also acquired Tra Thomas from the Eagles this offseason.
Analysis: All of this beef added on the offensive line should help Garrard, who was sacked 42 times last year. Now all Garrard needs is for new WR Torry Holt to find the fountain of youth, and his Fantasy value will continue to rise. Garrard did drop 20 pounds this offseason to get more mobile, and all of this should help Garrard this season. Go into the year with Garrard as a No. 2 Fantasy QB with upside. This could be similar to 2007 when you can use Garrard late in the year if he starts off the season playing well.
News: Right when it was beginning to look like Dennis Northcutt would be the Jaguars' top receiving threat, the club went out and added Torry Holt. The signing of the 10-year veteran helps QB David Garrard in that he'll have a reliable short- and medium-area receiver to assist in moving the chains. Holt isn't a speedy receiver anymore, though, and has a poor recent history of playing outdoors on grass. Garrard has been working on his figure this offseason, losing 20 pounds in hopes of being quicker and more mobile on bootlegs and scrambles in and out of the pocket.
Analysis: Opposing defenses will still likely not respect the Jaguars' passing attack if Holt is their best weapon, but as long as Garrard can hit Holt on simple patterns, he'll have a regular target to utilize. Still, Garrard is nothing more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a late-round pick only in the deepest of drafts this summer. Too many other passers have more upside this season than the once-promising Garrard. Not even his rushing totals will help owners benefit in 2009.
News: The Times-Union reports Jaguars QB David Garrard has lost nearly 20 pounds this offseason. "I just think it'll make me a little bit swifter, a little quicker, able to get out of the pocket a little easier and not get chased down by nose tackles," Garrard said. Garrard has gone from his playing weight of 250 last season to 232. According to Garrard, Jaguars coach Del Rio told him he could "almost guarantee" the QB would develop into a Pro Bowl-caliber player by getting down to his current size.
Analysis: Whether Garrard's weight loss translates on the field remains to be seen. Having spent most of his career weighing approximately 250, Garrard has been able to rank third in rushing among quarterbacks since 2006, and he finished second last season with a career-high 322 yards. Ideally, the Jaguars would like to limit the frequency of the times Garrard runs. But the offense employs lots of play-action passes and bootlegs, so increased mobility would help Garrard to set his feet faster and find open receivers. In addition, improved mobility might have helped Garrard to sidestep some of the 42 sacks suffered last season, (double his previous high for sacks, set in 2007). Garrard also needs help at WR, which is the biggest hole for the Jags, who count Dennis Northcutt as their best option coming into the year. Because of that, consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB this season.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard got an early jump on the Ravens defense Week 17 with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Pearman in the first quarter for a 7-3 lead. It would be the only success for the seven-year veteran the rest of the afternoon as Baltimore brought the heat in a 27-7 win. Garrard completed 14-of-25 passes for 127 yards. He was picked off twice while rushing for 40 yards.
Analysis: Garrard had a very promising 2007 after he took over at quarterback for the struggling Byron Leftwich. Many expected him to take another step forward in 2008, but he took a big leap backward. He threw just 15 touchdowns and was picked off 13 times. He had just two 300-yard games and three multi-touchdown games. Garrard could be a candidate for a bounce-back season in 2009, but Jacksonville will need to get him some quality targets. He is nothing more than a reserve Fantasy QB heading into next year.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard played well for almost four quarters in Thursday night's Week 16 game against the Colts. Garrard finished with 329 yards on 28-of-41 passing with a touchdown. Yardage wise, it was Garrard's best game of the season. But it was his only real mistake that cost the Jaguars the game. Keiwan Ratliff intercepted a pass from Garrard and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and a 31-24 lead with 4:48 remaining and that is how the game would end as Garrard was sacked by Dwight Freeney as time ran out near the goal line on the Jags' final possession. Garrard's TD pass was to Dennis Northcutt in the 1st quarter. It went for 28 yards. He also scored with his legs as he took the ball in from two yards out to start the scoring in the 2nd period.
Analysis: Fantasy owners still got nice production out of Garrard in Week 16 with two touchdowns and one pick. The Jaguars just wish he could have picked a better time for his first turnover. Garrard is never really a Fantasy stud since he's only thrown for more than one touchdown in three games this season. Consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB heading into Week 17 at Baltimore.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard played well against Green Bay last week with 238 passing yards and two touchdowns, but the Packers defense was more of a reason for that than Garrard playing a great game. Garrard now has a tougher matchup in Week 16 against the Colts, who did a good job against him earlier this season in Week 3. Indianapolis held Garrard to 167 passing yards, no touchdowns and an interception, and the Colts remain one of the top pass defenses in the NFL at No. 7 with only five touchdowns allowed, which leads the league.
Analysis: Garrard will post better stats than he did against the Colts in the first matchup, but don't expect him to duplicate last week's stats in this game. Consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 21-of-33 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 15 win vs. Green Bay.
Analysis: Garrard now has at least one touchdown in four straight games, and he ended a four-game interception streak on Sunday as all of his passes went to his own teammates. The Jaguars host Indianapolis on Thursday night, and Garrard will remain a No. 2 Fantasy QB for that matchup, despite only throwing for 167 yards with an interception against the Colts earlier this season.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has a surprisingly favorable matchup this week against Green Bay after the Packers pass defense has fallen apart recently. Last week, Matt Schaub passed for over 400 yards against Green Bay. But Garrard has lost his best wide receiver in Matt Jones (suspension) and will likely be without Jerry Porter (groin). It's hard to trust Garrard when his best receivers are Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt and Marcedes Lewis.
Analysis: You can expect Jacksonville to be handing off a lot to Maurice Jones-Drew, and the safe bet is to keep Garrard on your bench even with the good matchup.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard lost leading receiver Matt Jones for the rest of the season after Jones' appeal from a league-mandated three-game suspension was denied. He will serve the suspension for the rest of the season for violation the NFL's substance-abuse policy. Garrard might also be without underperforming receiver Jerry Porter for the balance of the season as he deals with a groin injury suffered last week.
Analysis: While these injuries will open the door for Reggie Williams, Mike Walker, Marcedes Lewis and Dennis Northcutt to step up, it will ultimately hurt Garrard's stats, particularly his yards per attempt. Garrard hasn't been an outstanding Fantasy QB of late anyway, and at this point in the season, not many owners are leaning on Garrard for big stats. With Jones gone, you can pretty much count on Garrard to hover around 200 total yards and a touchdown each week. His matchup vs. Green Bay in Week 15 is decent, but your QB corps would have to be pretty weak to sit someone for Garrard.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 19-of-38 passing for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception Sunday at Chicago. He also added three carries for 11 yards.
Analysis: Garrard isn't the same quarterback as he was last year and doesn't have the same Fantasy value. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 15 against Green Bay.
News: One week after posting the first 300-yard game of his career, Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for 287 yards on 25-of-35 passing Week 13 at Houston. However, he had only one touchdown pass -- an 18-yard strike to Reggie Williams -- to go along with one interception. He also ran the ball five times for 10 yards, caught a pass for minus-6 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Garrard has at least 200 yards passing in eight of his last nine games, but he has thrown for multiple touchdown passes in only two of those games. Since the Jaguars prefer to go to their running backs in the red zone, Garrard remains just a No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 14 at Chicago.
News: The Jaguars list QB David Garrard as active for Week 13 at Houston, meaning he'll start even though a back injury limited him in practice this week. He was able to practice in full on Friday, however.
Analysis: Garrard had his first 300-yard game of the season Week 12 against Minnesota but had just one touchdown and two interceptions. He had just three touchdowns and four picks in November and continues to produce average Fantasy numbers overall. Treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy option for this matchup.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (back) is listed as probable for Week 13 at Houston. He returned to a full practice Friday after limited reps the previous two days. Garrard is expected to start Monday night.
Analysis: Garrard had his first 300-yard game of the season Week 12 against Minnesota, but had just one touchdown and two interceptions. He had just three touchdowns and four picks in November and continues to be just an average passer. Garrard is at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB Week 13.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard set career highs in attempts (45), completions (27) and yards (317) last week against Minnesota with one touchdown and two interceptions. He's not going to be throwing that much against the Texans, but he has played well against Houston recently with 457 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions and 67 rushing yards and a touchdown in their past two meetings. Garrard was limited in practice both Wednesday and Thursday with a back injury but is not expected to miss any time.
Analysis: Houston is among the league leaders with 17 passing touchdowns allowed, so look for Garrard to have one of usual games with around 240 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and do some damage running the ball. Consider Garrard a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB in Week 13.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard set career highs in attempts (45), completions (27) and yards (317) as Jacksonville fell to the Vikings in Week 12. Garrard threw one touchdown, to Reggie Williams, but was picked off twice.
Analysis: Garrard is a serviceable backup Fantasy QB in most leagues and it was always a possibility that he could have a nice game in Week 12 against the run-stuffing Vikings. Another touchdown would have been nice, but you can't have everything. In Week 13, the Jaguars play at Houston on Monday night, and Garrard should only be used if your QB is hurt or has an awful matchup.
News: For the first time in seven games, Jaguars QB David Garrard had less than 200 yards passing Week 11 against the Titans. He finished with 135 yards on 13-of-30 passing, rushing three times for 16 yards. He also threw an interception -- only his second over that same seven-game stretch.
Analysis: Garrard has posted some decent stats for a quarterback in a run-heavy offense, but with only eight touchdown passes in 10 games, you clearly don't want to trust him as your starter in Fantasy. Treat him as a No. 2 option Week 12 against the Vikings.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 18-of-25 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 10 win over the Lions. He also ran two times for 10 yards.
Analysis: This is the kind of performance Garrard's owners expect from him on a weekly basis. He won't put up monster numbers very often, but he's definitely a capable low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 option. Now the bye weeks are over, his value decreases a little but, but you could do a lot worse than having him on your bench just in case your stud QB gets hurt. The Jaguars host the undefeated Titans in Week 11.
News: Jags QB David Garrard has passed for 1,224 yards, five touchdowns and one interception and also ran for a touchdown in his past five games. He's carrying the offense right now with Jacksonville failing to effectively run the ball. Look for Garrard to keep up his solid play Week 10 at the Lions, who have allowed 247.1 passing yards per game with 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Analysis: The Jaguars offense should start to play well this week since Detroit is last in total defense and scoring defense, and Jacksonville should be motivated after an embarrassing loss at Cincinnati last week. It helps Garrard that he has Matt Jones for another week since the standout receiver won't be suspended yet. Start Garrard as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 23-of-38 passes for 236 yards and an interception in a Week 9 loss to the Bengals. Garrard, who had thrown a touchdown in four straight games and hadn't thrown a pick over the same span, also ran six times for 23 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars looked awful on Sunday as they were held to 68 rushing yards, which forced Garrard to try and take over the game, something he doesn't do particularly well. Garrard will head to Detroit in Week 10 to take on the Lions, and that's a great matchup for any QB. Consider him a decent No. 2 Fantasy QB or bye-week replacement option.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard finished 25-of-42 passing for 283 yards and two touchdowns during a Week 8 loss to the Browns. He led the team with 59 yards rushing, but was sacked three times. It was the first game all season he had more than one passing touchdown. Garrard came in with just four touchdowns in his first six games.
Analysis: Garrard has five touchdowns in his last four games and has not thrown an interception. He also has four straight 200-yard games. He is starting to look and feel comfortable in the pocket. However, since Jacksonville has a balanced attack, Garrard is at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB or bye-week Fantasy replacement. The Jaguars play the Bengals Week 8.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will return from a bye week to face the Browns in Week 8. The Browns pass defense currently ranks seventh in the NFL against the pass, allowing 183.0 yards per game. They've given up just five touchdowns and have intercepted nine passes wit eight quarterback sacks.
Analysis: The reason the Browns have been so stingy against the pass this season is that most teams have spent most of their offensive energy running all over them. Expect the Jaguars to do the same with their two-headed running attack. Garrard will likely about 20-25 high-percentage passes and could end up with a touchdown pass or two with somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 yards. Consider him a decent, yet unspectacular, bye week replacement.
News: Playing their best all-around game of the season, the Jaguars got superb performances from quarterback David Garrard and running back Maurice Jones-Drew, plus three takeaways by their defense in a 24-17 win over the bumbling Broncos on a cold, misty Sunday (Week 6). Garrard completed 25 of 34 passes for 276 yards, one TD and no interceptions. Garrard threw a 30-yard touchdown to Marcedes Lewis in the third quarter and had 69-yard completion to Troy Williamson at the Denver 3 was negated by tackle Khalif Barnes' holding penalty.
Analysis: Garrard has managed 200-yards the last three games, but has just three touchdowns. The Jaguars like to punch the ball in with their running backs and that takes away from Garrard's Fantasy appeal. He remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 8 against the Browns, after the Jaguars come off their bye Week 7.
News: Jaguars QB Garrard is starting to show signs of turning his season around after two solid weeks with 436 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and 53 rushing yards and a touchdown against Houston and Pittsburgh. Now he faces the Broncos, who are No. 30 in pass defense, in Week 6. They also have no pass rush with just nine sacks, so Garrard should have time. Last year, Garrard had 154 passing yards and a touchdown and 52 rushing yards at Denver.
Analysis: The only concern with Garrard is his lack of talent at receiver, but did he ever have any to begin with? He does lose Mike Walker (knee) for this game. Still, consider Garrard a decent sleeper in Week 6 and start him if you need an injury or bye-week replacement against the Broncos.
News: For the second straight game and third time in five games, Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for 200 yards Week 5 against the Steelers. He finished at exactly 200, completing 18 of 32 passes. He also threw just his third touchdown pass of the season, completing a 24-yard strike to Marcedes Lewis in the fourth quarter. On the ground, he ran four times for 12 yards.
Analysis: Until Garrard contributes more than one touchdown in a game, he won't have much value in Fantasy. He doesn't look quite as efficient as he did last season, when he threw only three interceptions, so you shouldn't trust him as more than a bye-week replacement. He has a nice matchup Week 6 at Denver, though, since the Jaguars likely will have to pass to keep the score close.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard faced the Steelers twice last season, both games coming in Pittsburgh. Garrard, who has passed for 783 yards and two scores this season and added another TD on the ground, threw for four TDs and three picks in the two games last year against the Steelers, who are the league's third-best defense against the pass. He added 64 rush yards on nine carries (including the infamous 32-yard run he had in the playoff contest).
Analysis: There isn't one factor on Garrard's side in Week 5 on Sunday night. He's got a less-than-stellar history against Pittsburgh, which just happens to own one of the league's best pass defenses. That makes Garrard just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB option in Week 5. For more information on players who are facing familiar foes, check out our weekly History Lesson column.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for 236 yards and a touchdown, completing 23 of 32 passes in Week 4 against Houston. He also rushed seven times for 41 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He did not turn the ball over.
Analysis: It was the first game all season in which Garrard did not throw an interception after he'd thrown just three all of last year. It's also the first game in which he has had multiple touchdowns, though, he still has yet to throw for multiple scores in a game. This game goes a long way in restoring Garrard's Fantasy value as a No. 2 QB or potential bye week replacement. But in Week 5, he'll have a very tough matchup Sunday night vs. Pittsburgh.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for 167 yards in Week 3 at Indianapolis. He completed 16 of 22 yards and was intercepted once. He did not throw a touchdown for a second consecutive game.
Analysis: Garrard now has four interceptions to just one touchdown this season. He has already thrown more interceptions this season than he did all of last and is not playing at the level he did last season, but even then he was really just a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback or bye week replacement. Until he turns things around this year, think of him as neither. The Jaguars host Houston in Week 4.
News: In his past two games against the Colts, Jacksonville QB David Garrard has completed 32-of-41 (78.0 pct.) passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Jaguars visit the Colts in Week 3.
Analysis: Garrard has already matched his interception total from last season (three) and really hasn't impressed much in the opening two games. OK, so his offensive line is banged up and he has no receivers, but he should still be doing a little better. Consider him a backup QB with an average matchup in Week 3.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was limited to 165 yards passing in Week 2 against Buffalo. He completed 17 of 28 passes and was intercepted once, also rushing six times for 32 yards. He now has three interceptions in two games, equaling his total for 2007.
Analysis: Garrard threw three interceptions last season on 325 pass attempts, making him useful in larger Fantasy formats. This season, he's gotten off to a rocky start. His best receiver through two games has been Matt Jones and the running game hasn't taken pressure off the passing game yet as it did last year. Consider Garrard a matchup QB in Fantasy until further notice. The Jaguars will travel to Indianapolis in Week 3.
News: In his 2007 meeting with the Bills, Jacksonville QB David Garrard set season highs in completions (23), attempts (37) and yards (296). The two teams will meet again in Week 2.
Analysis: Garrard has to be a worried man heading into Week 2 as his offensive line is a complete shambles. In leagues that start two QBs, you might want to bench him until his protection problem clears up, and leave him well alone in regular formats.
News: The Orlando Sentinel reports that Jaguars LG Vince Manuwai is out for the season with an ACL injury. Also, fellow starting lineman Maurice Williams has a torn biceps and backup Uche Nwaneri has a leg injury.
Analysis: This is bad news for owners of all of the Jags skill-position players, but especially David Garrard, Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. Jacksonville struggled mightily in their running game on Sunday, and with their OL in tatters, that might not improve much in Week 2 against a tough Bills defense. Don't bench/drop any of those three guys yet, but keep a close eye on their progress (or lack of it) over the next couple of weeks.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, who threw just three interceptions all of last season, threw two in Week 1 at Tennessee. He also lost a fumble. The Jaguars signal caller completed 23 of 35 passes for 215 yards, including a 1-yard pass to Greg Jones in the second quarter.
Analysis: Garrard was under constant pressure, getting sacked seven times in the game. The team came in without top backup Richard Collier on the offensive line after he was shot earlier this week and that may have shaken the team up in more ways than one. The Jaguars had three more linemen get hurt, and Maurice Williams and left guard Vince Manuwai did not return. That helped Tennessee limit the Jaguars to 187 yards offense, just 33 yards rushing by what was the NFL's second-best rushing team in 2007. Without a rushing game, Garrard was left to try to beat a defense that did not have to play against the run. In Week 2, the Jaguars host Buffalo. Consider Garrard no more than a No. 2 Fantasy QB for that matchup.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has completed 48 of 75 (64.0 pct.) passes for 630 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 103.8 passer rating in September. He will try to maintain his nice numbers this month in Week 1 at the Titans. In one game against Tennessee last season, Garrard went 17-of-30 for 204 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: While Garrard's 2007 season was solid, his receiving corps is all banged up. He remains a decent No. 2 option whose value could increase as the year rolls along. Only start him vs. the Titans in leagues that require two QBs.
News: Jacksonville's starters played into the third quarter Saturday against the Buccaneers, and QB David Garrard finished his night with a 4-yard TD pass to Marcedes Lewis for a 17-7 lead. He also threw an 8-yarder to Dennis Northcutt. Garrard finished 10-of-16 for 118 yards with an interception.
Analysis: Garrard is facing a preseason without WRs Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams. While he may have them back for the start of the regular season, at what level will he get them back at? Without question, two of his best targets this season are in line to be rusty well into the regular season. Even though Garrard will get to know his other receivers better, the prospects of him improving on his solid 2007 are starting to look bleak. Treat Garrard as a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB well worth using as a one-week replacement but nothing more.
News: Jaguars receiver Reggie Williams will have arthroscopic surgery after re-injuring his right knee during training camp. Head coach Jack Del Rio said Williams damaged cartilage in his knee, and while he expects the former first-round pick to make a full recovery, he declined to offer a timetable for his return. Typically, arthroscopic procedures knock out players for four weeks.
News: Jaguars quarterback David Garrard made his way through a throng of fans Sunday, most of them clamoring for his autograph, and was greeted with chants of "David, David, David." It was a much different welcome than he received during any of his previous six training camps in Jacksonville. And for good reason. Garrard emerged as a legitimate starter last year. He had 18 touchdowns passes, just three interceptions and made the biggest play of Jacksonville's season. He was rewarded with the richest contract in franchise history, a six-year, $60 million extension that included $18 million guaranteed. Now, Garrard wants to prove he was worth it. "I'm at that point in my career where I should be playing at a little bit of a different level," Garrard said.
Analysis: The Jaguars expect more from Garrard, too. "The step he took last year is something we think we can build on," coach Jack Del Rio said. If so, the Jaguars could have another successful season. Garrard completed 64 percent of his passes last year and ranked third in the NFL with a passer rating of 102.2. Only New England's Tom Brady and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger were better. It was a breakthrough season for a longtime backup. Garrard remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB until his numbers rank up their with the elite Fantasy options.
News: Jaguars wide receiver Jerry Porter had surgery Friday to repair a torn hamstring tendon and will miss all the preseason. It was a significant setback for a team with Super Bowl expectations, especially for Garrard.
Analysis: The 30-year-old Garrard is coming off his best season, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns. With the addition of Porter, Garrard was supposed to have an even better 2008. That still might happen as Porter should be ready to go by the regular season opener, but they won't have the preseason to become familiar with each other. That lowers Garrard's Fantasy potential by infinitesimally small amounts and he remains a high-end No. 2 Fantasy QB option.
News: The Jaguars secured more offensive options this offseason for QB David Garrard by trading for Minnesota Vikings WR Troy Williamson and acquiring former Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Porter via free agency. Garrard, who posted a 9-3 record as a starter last season, thinks his new receivers can add to the club season point-total record (411, 25.7 average) the Jaguars established in 2007. "He caught everything," says Garrard of Williamson's performance during minicamp. "He did a great job. He's so smooth and fluid that he barely looks like he's running, but he's always running right by somebody." Williamson and Porter look to join veteran receivers Dennis Northcutt, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones to head up the Jags' receiving corps. "I think it can be as well-rounded a group as there is," says Porter. "We've got speed, we've got size and we've got quickness. Each guy has something different that they bring to the table."
Analysis: The 30-year-old Garrard is coming off his best season, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing three games because of an ankle injury. He threw just three interceptions. Garrard has plenty of talent around him to post even better numbers in 2008. Figure Garrard to be a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB. Grab him with a middle-round pick in all 2008 drafts.
News: Quarterback David Garrard has signed a contract extension with the Jaguars. Terms of Monday's deal were not released. But Garrard and his agent, Albert Irby, had been looking for something similar to the six-year, $67.5 million contract Dallas QB Tony Romo signed last season. The 30-year-old Garrard is coming off his best season, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing three games because of an ankle injury. He threw just three interceptions.
Analysis: With Jacksonville improving its receiving corps (Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson are additions; Ernest Wilford is gone), Garrard has plenty of talent around him to post even better numbers in 2008, though the motivation of a big contract is now in the rearview. Nevertheless, figure Garrard to be a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB, perfect for platoon duty. Grab him with a middle-round pick in all 2008 drafts.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was a breakout Fantasy star in 2007. Garrard entered training camp as the backup to Byron Leftwich, but Leftwich was cut prior to the season in a surprise move. Garrard did not disappoint coach Jack Del Rio or Fantasy owners who added him as a free agent during the season. Garrard missed three games with an ankle injury, but he started 12 and finished with 2,509 yards passing, 18 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He also added 185 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Analysis: Garrard led the Jaguars to the second round of the playoffs before losing to New England. He led many Fantasy owners to the playoffs with 12 touchdowns in his final six games of the season. Look for Garrard to improve in 2008, especially if Jacksonville improves its receiving corps. Garrard should be considered a Fantasy backup to start the season with the chance to see his value rise if he plays this well again.
News: One of the most efficient passers during the regular season, Jaguars QB David Garrard struggled in the Wild Card game on Saturday at Pittsburgh, throwing two interceptions and completing only nine of 21 passes. However, he found a seam on a convert-or-else fourth-and-2 play late in the fourth quarter and rambled 32 yards to the Steelers 11 with 1:56 left. The Jaguars eventually kicked a game-winning field goal. "They kind of lost their gaps, they thought pass, I was able to get through there," Garrard said. "I just wanted to get a first down. I did enough to get into field-goal range and that was all I was thinking about."
Analysis: Garrard finished with 140 yards passing, including 43 on a touchdown to Maurice Jones-Drew. He also had 58 yards rushing on five carries. His two interceptions represented one more than he had all season, but he remains on the lower end of Fantasy quarterbacks available in the playoffs. The Jaguars will either visit the Colts or the Patriots in the next round.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard will be the backup in Week 17 at Houston behind starter Quinn Gray. The Jaguars don't plan on using Garrard with the playoffs starting next week. Gray started three games this year when Garrard was hurt with an ankle injury.
Analysis: Keep Garrard reserved in all Fantasy leagues for Week 17 and expect him to start in the first round of the playoffs against either San Diego or Pittsburgh. Gray should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option at Houston.
News: Jaguars.com reports that coach Jack Del Rio won't say who won't play and who will play, and for how long, at Houston in Week 17. The Jaguars have already clinched the No. 5 seed in the AFC and cannot improve on it. Last week, the Jags rested their key starters after building a huge lead vs. Oakland, and could do the same thing against the Texans with or without that lead. "I'm not going to get into who I'm going to play. We want to play good football. We want to make sure we play well," Del Rio said. "It's going to get a lot of attention. Last week, it was the Pro Bowl. This week, it's are you going to rest them?"
Analysis: For what it's worth, Jaguars QB David Garrard said he was expecting to play but didn't speculate on how long he'd play. Our best guess is to expect a half from Garrard, WR Reggie Williams and RB Maurice Jones-Drew, and perhaps as little as a quarter from veteran RB Fred Taylor. Realistically, the last thing the Jaguars want to do is get one of their key players hurt, so don't expect large stats from any regular Jacksonville offensive player in Week 17, especially since the Texans will play them tough in an effort to finish their season 8-8.
News: After helping Jacksonville build a huge lead over Oakland in Week 16, QB David Garrard was benched to rest and stay healthy. Quinn Gray took his spot. Garrard left with 199 pass yards on 11-of-18 passing with two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and an interception. He also had 19 rush yards.
Analysis: Not bad over less than three quarters of play. Garrard has developed into a quality NFL quarterback that will garner Fantasy attention next year as a high-quality backup (assuming Jacksonville doesn't upgrade its receivers). Jacksonville plays at Houston in Week 17; he's worth a start assuming the Jaguars don't have the No. 5 seed in the AFC locked up.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard has averaged two touchdown passes in his past five games and is playing well recently, but this week he has a tough matchup. Oakland is No. 7 in pass defense and has only allowed 11 passing touchdowns this season. Last week against Indianapolis, the Raiders limited Colts QB Peyton Manning to one touchdown and one interception.
Analysis: Garrard is still worth using as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option because of how well he's played, but this week could be tough for him to put up huge stats. For the most part, expect Garrard to do a lot of handing off and not much passing.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 17-of-33 passing for 197 yards, three touchdowns and one interception Sunday at Pittsburgh. He also added four carries for 8 yards.
Analysis: Garrard continues to be a late-season star. He now has 10 touchdowns and two interceptions in his past six games. Consider Garrard a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option against Oakland in Week 16. He's played good enough that it's time to start him.
News: The weather forecast in Pittsburgh calls for rain and heavy wind when the Jaguars and Steelers play in Week 15. Snow is also a possibility.
Analysis: We strongly suggest tuning into The NFL Today on CBS at Noon ET to watch and get an idea of the exact conditions at Pittsburgh before starting any prominent Jaguars or Steelers (other than the running backs).
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard is on fire right now with seven passing touchdowns and one interception in his past five games, with the interception his lone for the season. He also is averaging 261 passing yards the past three games. But now he faces a Steelers team with something to prove after guaranteeing a victory against New England and then getting shellacked. The Steelers, despite allowing 399-yards passing and four touchdowns against Tom Brady, are still No. 2 in pass defense.
Analysis: Garrard should be considered a low-end No. 1 option this week. The matchup is not in his favor, but he's played well recently and might be worth a start because of his performance.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 20 of 36 pass attempts in Week 14 vs. Carolina for 230 yards, including two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over in the game.
Analysis: Garrard had a very efficient outing against a very bad Panthers defense and he looked like a useful Fantasy option. He's going to have a tough time repeating that against the best defense in the NFL in Week 15 vs. Pittsburgh, though. View him as a No. 2 QB in Fantasy.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard just keeps getting better and better with five touchdowns and one interception in his past three games. The interception was last week at Indianapolis, which was his first of the season, and he's averaging 247 yards passing in his past three games. He's not going to make mistakes, and even though Carolina is No. 10 in pass defense with 16 passing touchdowns allowed, Garrard should continue his stellar play this week against the Panthers.
Analysis: Garrard has become a hot commodity in Fantasy leagues and is worth using as a low-end No. 1 option this week against the Panthers.
News: Despite completing 24 of 29 passes for 257 yards with two touchdowns, an interception, 5 rush yards and a fumble, David Garrard couldn't lead his team to a win over the Colts in Week 13. Garrard continued to spread the ball around to his receivers (four different players had at least four receptions) but turned the ball over twice for the first time this season.
Analysis: Garrard should continue throwing well against the Panthers in Week 14 at home. Figure him to be a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 QB option in the coming week's action.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard had a career game, yardage-wise, in Week 12 and heads into Week 13's game with the division-leading Colts having not thrown an interception in eight games this season. The Colts have allowed the second-lowest yardage total in the air this season.
Analysis: Garrard picked a good time to have a monster week, as this game against the Colts is certainly one of the more important contests in his career. A win would give Jax a tie at the top of the AFC South. Garrard has never been a reliable Fantasy QB, but his performance in Week 12 certainly made people pay attention to him. He remains a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 13.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard threw for a career-high 296 yards and a touchdown in Jacksonville's 36-14 win over the Bills in Week 12. He completed 23 of 37 passes, set a team record for consecutive passes without an interception (209), and also rushed one time for seven yards.
Analysis: Garrard proved against the Bills that he can throw the ball around when he has to. He may find life a little more difficult in Week 13 when he goes up against the Colts pass defense, which is one of the best in the league. He will remain a No. 2 Fantasy QB for that matchup.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard last played Buffalo last season. He had 132 yards passing and two touchdowns against the Bills at Buffalo in November. This time, the game will be in Jacksonville in Week 12. Garrard has played well this season with 1,330 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Last week against San Diego he had 189 yards passing and two touchdowns. Buffalo is No. 29 in pass defense with 17 touchdowns allowed and 12 interceptions.
Analysis: Consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy option against the Bills.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 15-of-24 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns Sunday against San Diego. He also added five carries for 4 yards.
Analysis: Garrard missed the last three games after spraining his left ankle Oct. 22 against Indianapolis. He played well against the Chargers and could be considered a decent sleeper in Week 12 against Buffalo.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard practiced with the first-team offense Wednesday, the latest step in his return to the starting lineup. Garrard missed the last three games after spraining his left ankle Oct. 22 against Indianapolis. The Jaguars, who went 2-1 with Quinn Gray under center, expect Garrard back Sunday against San Diego. Garrard, who ran without pain last week, probably could have played Sunday at Tennessee. But the Jaguars decided to play it safe and hold him out one more week. "He's one of our playmakers on offense, so to be able to get him back certainly should provide a lift," coach Jack Del Rio said. "We want David to settle back into the kind of football he was playing before he got injured, be a playmaker for us. He was making plays with his mind, with his feet and with his arm. We want him to get back into that groove and play good football for us."
Analysis: Del Rio didn't even anticipate listing Garrard on the injury report Wednesday, saying only a setback would prevent him from returning against the Chargers. Expect Garrard to be a decent option as a No. 2 Fantasy QB against the Bolts this week.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, who missed the last three games because of an ankle injury, anticipates returning to the starting lineup Week 11 against the San Diego Chargers. "Everything's feeling good," Garrard said Monday. "We're going to have to once again get out and practice and make sure we continue down the right path and make sure we don't have any setbacks." However, head coach Jack Del Rio was less certain that Garrard would be under center Sunday. "We'll see how practice goes," he said. "He did OK last week. He wasn't quite ready. We anticipate he'll be better this week and we'll take a look on Wednesday and see how it goes."
Analysis: Garrard could have played Week 10 at Tennessee, but team doctors decided to give him another week to recover from the high ankle sprain. "I still wasn't far enough along," Garrard said. "If there was one or two games left, then I could have done it. But there's a long stretch ahead of us and I don't want to do anything that tweaks it just enough that it kind of hobbles me a little bit more. In hindsight, I know it was the best decision." Obviously, you'll have to keep track of Garrard's progress throughout the week if you hope to start him, though keep in mind that he's nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback.
News: According to the Florida Times-Union, Jaguars QB David Garrard expects to return in Week 11 when the Jaguars host San Diego. Garrard hasn't played since Oct. 22, when he suffered a high ankle sprain in the second quarter against Indianapolis.
Analysis: This is good news for Fantasy owners who have counted on Garrard as a No. 2 option. Against the Chargers, Garrard should not be started unless you are dire need at QB, but it's good he will return to the field.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (ankle), K Josh Scobee (quadriceps), RB LaBrandon Toefield (coach's decision), WR Matt Jones (coach's decision), DB Aaron Glenn (coach's decision), LB Roy Manning (coach's decision) and DL Brent Hawkins (coach's decision) as inactive for Week 10 at Tennessee.
Analysis: None of the players on this list should be on your Fantasy rosters at the moment. They are not in a position to help your Fantasy squad.
News: According to the Florida Times-Union, it appears as though Quinn Gray will start at quarterback Week 10 against the Titans. QB David Garrard is still nursing a high ankle sprain and is listed as questionable. "I took all the reps this week, and coach (Jack Del Rio) told me that most likely, it'll be me (starting Sunday against the Tennessee Titans)," Gray said.
Analysis: Garrard took limited practice reps all week and was told he needed to be mobile in order to play against the Titans. It appears as though the Jaguars will intend to rest Garrard for another week. Follow the situation up until inactives, but consider using healthier alternatives Week 10. If Garrard somehow plays, he is nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (ankle) is listed as questionable for Week 10 at Tennessee. Garrard took limited practice reps all week. Garrard ran without pain last week. "It's going to be obvious if I can do it," Garrard said earlier this week. "If I can't, then it'll be obvious as well. I don't want to be hobbling. I don't feel like I'll be able to play my game if I'm hobbling around or gimping around. I've never played like that."
Analysis: The Jaguars started the season 4-1 thanks mostly to Garrard. He injured his left ankle early against the Colts in Week 7 and sat out the last two games. Quinn Gray started in his place. Coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard needs to move well to have a chance to play Sunday against the Titans, who are fourth in the AFC with 22 sacks. "They apply great pressure on the quarterback and he's going to have to be able to move to protect himself," Del Rio said earlier in the week. Expect a game-time decision on Garrard's status. Garrard is far from an elite Fantasy QB, so his return won't cause too many ripples in the Fantasy world. If healthy, consider him a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 10.
News: Jaguars quarterback David Garrard practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday and Thursday, and could return against Tennessee in Week 10. Garrard ran without pain last week, but the real test was getting through his first practice since suffering a high ankle sprain Oct. 22 against Indianapolis. "It's going to be obvious if I can do it," Garrard said before practice Wednesday. "If I can't, then it'll be obvious as well. I don't want to be hobbling. I don't feel like I'll be able to play my game if I'm hobbling around or gimping around. I've never played like that."
Analysis: The Jaguars (5-3) started the season 4-1 thanks mostly to Garrard. He injured his left ankle early against the Colts and sat out the last two games. Quinn Gray started in his place. Coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard needs to move well to have a chance to play Sunday against the Titans, who are fourth in the AFC with 22 sacks. "They apply great pressure on the quarterback and he's going to have to be able to move to protect himself," Del Rio said. The Jaguars head coach said it could be a game-time decision, but Garrard believes he might know one way or the other in the next few days. Garrard is far from an elite Fantasy QB, so his return won't cause too many ripples in the Fantasy world. If healthy, consider him a No. 2 Fantasy QB for Week 10.
News: According to the Orlando Sentinel, Jaguars QB David Garrard could suit up against Tennessee in Week 10. "I don't have to make a decision until Sunday, but I expect him to play," coach Jack Del Rio said on Monday. Garrard has missed two games because of a high-ankle sprain.
Analysis: Garrard is far from an elite Fantasy QB, so his return won't cause too many ripples in the Fantasy world. If, like most people, you have him as a backup, just be glad you have some decent insurance at the position.
News: The Jaguars listed QB David Garrard (ankle), K Josh Scobee (quadricep), LaBrandon Toefield (coach's decision), DB Brian Williams (hamstring), LB Justin Durant (coach's decision), DL Derek Landri (coach's decision) and TE Gregory Estandia (foot) as inactive for Week 9 at New Orleans.
Analysis: Garrard may be ready for Week 10 at Tennessee, but he should be reserved in all leagues until further notice. The rest of these players should be left on the waiver wire until further notice.
News: According to the Jacksonville Times-Union, Jaguars QB David Garrard (ankle) isn't ruling out the possibility of returning to the lineup in Week 10 at Tennessee. "I'm hoping," he said Thursday. "I've got my fingers crossed." Garrard said he'll know more after he jogs later this week.
Analysis: Garrard isn't an elite Fantasy QB, so most of his owners will just have him as a backup option at the moment. They will be keeping their fingers crossed that their No. 1 guy doesn't get hurt before Garrard returns to action, whenever that may be.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (ankle) is out for Week 9 at New Orleans. He will now miss two consecutive games. "I think he's likely to start walking around (off his crutches) and moving this week," Jags head coach Jack Del Rio said Monday. "The most likely scenario would be to have him possibly return against the Titans (in Week 10)."
Analysis: Garrard was expected to be out a month, so any return before Week 11 would be a positive for his owners. See how he progresses over the next couple of weeks, but definitely have a backup plan ready for Week 10 if he's not back by then. When healthy, he is best used as a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: David Garrard will likely miss at least one more game as the Jaguars' starting QB, reports the Jacksonville Times-Union. "I think he's likely to start walking around (off his crutches) and moving this week," Jags head coach Jack Del Rio said Monday. "The most likely scenario would be to have him possibly return against the Titans (in Week 10). I think it would be very difficult (for him) to make it back this week." Quinn Gray, who completed seven of 16 passes in the 24-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7, will get the second start of his NFL career against the Saints in Week 9 if Garrard can't play.
Analysis: Garrard was expected to be out a month, so any return before Week 11 would be a positive for his owners. See how he progresses over the next couple of weeks, but definitely have a backup plan ready for Week 10 if he's not back by then.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard, K Josh Scobee, WR John Broussard, DB Brian Williams, DL Derek Landri and DL Tony McDaniel are all inactive for Week 8 at Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Garrard is inactive as expected and might miss a month with an ankle injury. Scobee continues to be bothered by a bum quad injury and won't return until absolutely necessary. Both players are viable Fantasy options when healthy. The remaining inactive players have little to no Fantasy value when active. Keep these players reserved in Fantasy leagues for Week 8.
News: Jaguars quarterback David Garrard could be sidelined up to a month with a badly sprained left ankle. Coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that Garrard has a high ankle sprain, meaning he has ligament damage, and will sit out road games against Tampa Bay and New Orleans. "It's more likely to be three or four (games), somewhere in that window," Del Rio said. "I don't think it's likely to think he'll be back any sooner than that."
Analysis: Del Rio said Quinn Gray will make his first career start against the Buccaneers on Sunday. The Jaguars also planned to work out Doug Johnson, Drew Henson and Todd Bouman later Wednesday. Drew Bledsoe was approached about a tryout but declined to come out of retirement. Seeing as how he may not return until Week 12, which is close to the Fantasy postseason in some leagues, owners of Garrard should either drop him for a suitable replacement or just keep him benched until he returns healthy.
News: Jaguars quarterback David Garrard left Monday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts with a sprained left ankle. He returned after missing two plays, but was back on the bench to start the second half. Indianapolis' Ed Johnson beat right tackle Tony Pashos and sacked Garrard for a 6-yard loss on first down early in the second quarter. Garrard called timeout, limped to the Jacksonville sideline and was replaced by Quinn Gray. "He got a pretty good sprain," head coach Jack Del Rio said of Garrard after the game. "I would think, in all likelihood, he'll be missing some time."
Analysis: Garrard completed eight of 12 passes for 72 yards before his departure. He still hasn't thrown an interception this season, making him a low-risk quarterback in Fantasy. On the flip side, he has only six touchdown passes. In most Fantasy leagues, he makes a nice bye-week fill-in, nothing more. Early reports say he'll miss two weeks, but check back later in the week for a final say on the matter. The Jaguars visit the Buccaneers in Week 8.
News: Jags QB David Garrard has only six touchdowns this season, but has yet to throw an interception and is currently fourth in the NFL in quarterback rating. Garrard will look to keep his nice season going against the Colts, who he struggled against in one outing last season, completing only 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards and an interception.
Analysis: Garrard doesn't put up gaudy Fantasy numbers, but if you're in a league that punishes interceptions with negative points, you know he won't kill you. Consider Garrard a solid No. 2 Fantasy QB choice in Week 7, especially as the Jags might find themselves playing catch-up against the Colts.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 22-for-34 in Week 6 vs. Houston, including two touchdown passes. He added five carries for 26 yards and did not turn the ball over.
Analysis: Garrard was cool and efficient against the Texans and has yet to throw an interception this season. He's not a statistical stud, but he won't hurt your Fantasy squad either. In Week 7 vs. Indianapolis on Monday night, consider Garrard a decent bye-week replacement.
News: When Jacksonville played the Houston Texans in Week 10 last season, Jaguars QB David Garrard completed only 15 of 34 passes and threw four interceptions.
Analysis: Garrard has yet to throw a pick this season, which must be pleasing his owners in leagues that punish the interception, and has thrown one touchdown in every game so far in 2007. However, he has only thrown over 220 yards once in four contests. Garrard won't power your team to victory every week, but he won't kill you, either. Consider him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB option in Week 5 when the Jaguars host the Texans.
News: Jags QB David Garrard was 20-of-27 passing for 218 yards with a touchdown and 9 rush yards in the Jaguars' Week 5 win at Kansas City. He's continuing to manage the game beautifully for the Jaguars without posting tons of stats.
Analysis: As a backup Fantasy QB, you couldn't ask for anything more from Garrard. As a starter, he's good enough to get the job done but won't put up "wow" stats like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. Continue to look at him as a No. 2 Fantasy QB when the Jags host Houston in Week 6.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 14-of-20 passes in Week 3 at Denver for 154 yards, including a 3-yard TD pass. He also rushed 12 times for 52 yards. He did not throw an interception, but did lose one fumble in the game.
Analysis: Garrard isn't in an offense that is going to spread the ball all over the field. He won't pass it over 20 times many times this season. Still, he can be useful as a No. 2 QB in larger leagues -- especially in leagues where his rushing ability is beneficial. The Jaguars have a bye-week in Week 5, so he won't be of any use, but he's worth owning for Week 6 vs. Houston.
News: The Broncos are No. 1 in pass defense in the NFL and for good reason, with defensive backs Champ Bailey and Dre Bly leading the way. Denver has allowed only one touchdown with four interceptions and an eye-popping 62.5 yards per game. Jaguars QB David Garrard has yet to throw an interception this year with 476 yards passing and two touchdowns, but his mediocre receivers will struggle to get open in a Week 3 showdown with the Broncos.
Analysis: Garrard looks like a decent No. 2 option in Fantasy leagues, but you wouldn't want to start him until the Jaguars start putting more points on the board. Keep him reserved Week 2 at Denver but target him now on the waiver wire.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard had a good game yardage-wise against the Falcons in Week 2, connecting for 272 on 17-of-25 passing. He also threw a touchdown pass, a 14-yard strike to WR Reggie Williams in the fourth quarter, and ran five times for 20 yards. He completed passes to nine different receivers.
Analysis: Garrard spread the ball out and played an efficient game against the Falcons even though the Jags only won 13-7. More and more, Garrard looks like a decent No. 2 option in Fantasy leagues, but you wouldn't want to start him until the Jaguars start putting more points on the board. Keep him reserved Week 2 at Denver but target him now on the waiver wire.
News: Jags QB David Garrard went 17-of-30 passing for 204 yards with a touchdown and 24 rush yards on five carries vs. Tennessee in Week 1. His biggest pass completion was a 47-yard bomb to rookie John Broussard and added two other plays for 20 or more yards.
Analysis: Garrard's luck should change when he and the Jags play vs. Atlanta in Week 2. The Falcons defense looked so-so in their Week 1 game at Minnesota, so the Jaguars should be able to pur some points on the board. Ultimately, Garrard remains a bench option and not a starter for your Fantasy team.
News: On Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars host one of the league's worst defenses from last year in the Tennessee Titans, but quarterback David Garrard may not necessarily take advantage. He had his best game last year against the Titans (177 yards passing, three touchdowns) but also one of his worst games against them (233 yards passing, one touchdown, three interceptions).
Analysis: With no time for Garrard to prepare with the first team offense after the Jaguars released Byron Leftwich, expect Jacksonville to run mostly against the Titans, especially with its solid backfield tandem of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor.
News: NFL Network is among those reporting Friday that the Jaguars have named David Garrard their starting quarterback for Week 1 vs. Tennessee. Coach Jack Del Rio had said previously that Byron Leftwich would be the club's starter, but the team is planning on trading or releasing him following a lackluster preseason. Garrard finished the preseason completing 36-of-47 for 456 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions. He had a 113.4 passer rating. By contrast, Leftwich completed 19 of 38 for 226 yards in three preseason games with a touchdown and no interceptions. He had a 77.3 passer rating, which is close to his lifetime passer rating of 80.5. "The team took it well," coach Del Rio said Friday. "Our guys have proven that they believe in David and can win with David. The initial news is a little bit shocking, but ... they'll settle in and be able to do their jobs at the highest level."
Analysis: Garrard is now thrust into No. 2 Fantasy QB territory, albeit on the low end, while Leftwich's future is up in the air. Because Garrard will post decent rushing stats, he'll be worth owning as a backup, especially if you already have Leftwich. Moreover, Leftwich shouldn't be dropped yet until we know where he'll be playing and if he'll be starting.
News: With Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich out in Thursday night's preseason finale, David Garrard received the start with the backups and played three series, according to the Jacksonville Times-Union. He completed 7-of-10 passes for 77 yards and a 92.5 passer rating while leading the team to three points. Garrard finished the preseason completing 36-of-47 for 456 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions. He had a 113.4 passer rating. By contrast, Leftwich completed 19 of 38 for 226 yards in three preseason games and a touchdown and no interceptions. He had a 77.3 passer rating, which is close to his lifetime passer rating of 80.5.
Analysis: Garrard will start the season as the No. 2 QB for the Jaguars behind Leftwich. But as we know, Leftwich is injury prone, so Garrard could have Fantasy value at some point this year. He should not be drafted but it worth keeping an eye on.
News: The Green Bay Packers lost their unbeaten preseason record in a 21-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lambeau Field on Thursday night. After sputtering under starting quarterback Byron Leftwich, the Jaguars' offense woke up when backup David Garrard entered the game early in the third quarter. Playing against the Packers' second-string defense, Garrard played two series and led the Jaguars (2-1) to two touchdowns. Garrard opened with a 7-play, 45-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by LaBrandon Toefield. He came back with a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end George Wrighster to put the Jaguars ahead 14-10 late in the second quarter.
Analysis: Garrard was 6-for-7 for 97 yards and a touchdown before he was replaced by third-string quarterback Quinn Gray, who played despite the death of his father Thursday morning. As good as Garrard has played, Byron Leftwich remains the No. 1 QB in Jacksonville, and drafting Garrard to back up Leftwich makes no sense since Leftwich is a No. 2 Fantasy QB. Garrard will be the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville and has minimal Fantasy value until he finds regular playing time.
News: After passing for 153 yards in the first preseason game, Jags QB David Garrard completed 11-of-14 passes for 129 yards vs. Tampa Bay in Jacksonville's second preseason game with a rushing touchdown and nine rush yards. He has completed 23-of-30 passes for 282 yards in two preseason games (against backup defenses) ... with no passing touchdowns.
Analysis: As good as Garrard has played, Byron Leftwich remains the No. 1 QB in Jacksonville, and drafting Garrard to back up Leftwich makes no sense since Leftwich is a No. 2 Fantasy QB. Garrard will be the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville and has minimal Fantasy value until he finds regular playing time.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 12-of-16 passes for 153 yards during Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins.
Analysis: As good as Garrard played Saturday, Byron Leftwich remains the No. 1 QB in Jacksonville. Fantasy owners who draft Leftwich might want to take a pick in the later rounds on Garrard, just in case something happens. Otherwise, Garrard will be the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville and have minimal Fantasy value.
News: Training camp began with some quarterback issues for the Jaguars -- starter Byron Leftwich hasn't played since October, and reserve David Garrard flashed greatness in 10 starts last season. How quickly things have changed. Less than two weeks into camp, Leftwich has dazzled coaches and reclaimed the position. He said he's looking forward to playing his first game since a loss against the Houston Texans Oct. 22, when he sprained his left ankle and later had season-ending surgery. "Personally, it's been a long time since I have been out there," Leftwich said. "It's going to be fun to get back out there, competing in the form and fashion you need to compete in to win football games in the regular season."
Analysis: Head coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard will play slightly more than Leftwich, then the Jags will take a close look at Tim Couch -- a former first-overall draft pick of Cleveland -- as well Quinn Gray and Lester Ricard, all of whom are vying for the third-string job. Fantasy owners who draft Leftwich might want to take a pick in the later rounds on Garrard, just in case something happens. Otherwise, Garrard will be the No. 2 QB in Jacksonville and have minimal Fantasy value.
News: NFL Network reports that while the Jaguars haven't said anything publicly, they do have interest in acquiring QB Daunte Culpepper, who is currently property of the Miami Dolphins but is expected to be traded or released soon. The report states that Jags backup QB David Garrard was told by the Jaguars that any acquisition of another quarterback isn't being done to slight him or his performance in any way. Moreover, Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter told CBS SportsLine in a recent interview that any quarterback that the Jaguars may acquire won't compete for the starting job.
Analysis: Culpepper isn't part of the Dolphins' plans for 2007 and will likely wear another team's jersey. In Jacksonville, Culpepper would be the insurance policy for Byron Leftwich both this year and beyond (Leftwich is in a contract year). Garrard could be pushed into the No. 3 QB spot or be traded. Neither passer is worth owning at the start of the Fantasy season.
News: Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said at the NFL Combine that Byron Leftwich will return to his starting role, ending speculation about what the Jaguars would do at the position. "When you evaluate Byron and stack him up against the rest of the league, he's one of the young, really good, strong-armed quarterbacks out there," Del Rio said. Leftwich started the first six games last season, then was benched for David Garrard -- a move Del Rio described as awkward. Garrard and Gray might not be content with Del Rio's decision. Both were under the impression they would be given a shot at the starting job for next season. But Del Rio said he expected them to accept their backup roles. "David has proven he's very capable of winning in this league," Del Rio said. "It's not all he hoped it would be, but he's always had a professional approach that has allowed us to win, and I would hope he would have the same approach now."
Analysis: Garrard did not play well in 2006, and Gray only seemed to succeed when he took off and ran with the football. Neither quarterback should be drafted or owned at this point for the upcoming 2007 Fantasy season.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said that his starting QB job for 2007 would be an open competition. Byron Leftwich started 2006 as the starter, but hurt his ankle and eventually lost the job to David Garrard. Garrard did well for a few weeks before nosediving, and he was replaced in the Week 17 finale (when the Jaguars still had playoff hopes) by Quinn Gray. Jacksonville QBs totaled 17 TDs and 14 interceptions this season, with Garrard and Gray each rushing for two (yes, both of Gray's TDs came in the season finale at Kansas City).
Analysis: Whomever lands the job in Jacksonville will have three potential-laden receivers and a second-year tight end to work with -- not to mention a reception-worthy duo of RBs in Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. Monitor this situation throughout the offseason, but consider Leftwich to be the front-runner with Garrard and Grey in the mix, though don't discount Jacksonville signing or drafting a quarterback to add to the competition.
News: The Jaguars made a switch at quarterback Week 17 against the Chiefs, taking out starter David Garrard in the third quarter and replacing him with Quinn Gray. The Jaguars were down 28-10 at the time of the switch. Garrard did not return to the game. He finished the game 10-of-18 for 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Analysis: The debate on whether Garrard or Byron Leftwich will be the team's starter in 2006 will rage on throughout the offseason. Leftwich will likely return as the team's starter, but anything can happen from here on out. If Garrard does return as the team's starter, he will likely be viewed as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard (hamstring) is listed as probable for 17 at Kansas City. He did practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Garrard is at best a high-end No. 3 Fantasy QB for Week 17.
News: Jags QB David Garrard was 17-of-23 passing for 195 yards and a touchdown, 11 rush yards and a fumble vs. New England in Week 16. "For the most part I played pretty decent, but to have the last drive come out the way it did, it hurts," said Garrard, who now has nine turnovers in the team's last four losses, including three that were returned for touchdowns last week at Tennessee. "I have to do a better job of not having the turnovers."
Analysis: Garrard should not be used in Fantasy play at Kansas City in Week 17, though he will have plenty to play for in the game.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 22-of-37 passing for 233 yards with one TD and three interceptions at Tennessee in Week 15. Two of Garrard's interceptions were returned for Titans touchdowns and a fumble was recovered and returned for a touchdown as well as the Titans won 24-17. Garrard added 43 rush yards. "I have never been a part of a day quite like this; I don't even know if I have seen a day quite like this ...," Garrard said. "It is upsetting, and I definitely have a horrible taste in my mouth."
Analysis: Garrard should remain benched when he plays vs. New England in Week 16.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 8-of-14 passing for 79 yards, no touchdowns and one interception against Indianapolis. He also had four carries for 4 yards.
Analysis: Garrard wasn't asked to do much against the Colts with the way the Jaguars ran the ball. Look for Garrard to bounce back against the Titans in Week 15.
News: Jacksonville QB David Garrard was 16-of-22 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns against Miami. He also had six carries for 24 yards.
Analysis: Consider Garrard a No. 2 QB for Week 14 against the Colts.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 16-of-22 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 12 loss to the Bills. He threw touchdown passes to TE Marcedes Lewis (1-yard) and WR Matt Jones (three yards). Garrard also rushed for 28 yards.
Analysis: Garrard now has five touchdowns on the season. Consider him a No. 2 QB for Week 13 as the Jags play the Dolphins.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that QB Byron Leftwich (ankle) might be placed on Injured Reserve in the near future. Leftwich had ankle surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. "I don't think we'll get (Leftwich) back for the regular season," Del Rio said. Del Rio is comfortable with David Garrard as his starter going forward but refused to speculate whether or not Garrard would be the starter in 2007.
Analysis: Leftwich should have been off most Fantasy rosters by now anyway, but this should ice him as a drop in all leagues. Keeper-wise, Leftwich could end up starting somewhere else in 2007, so he may be worth hanging onto in those formats. As for Garrard, consider him a low-end starting option at Buffalo in Week 12.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard completed 19-of-32 passes for 249 yards in a Week 11 win over the Giants. He also rushed for 31 yards, but had not touchdowns in the win.
Analysis: Garrard would have had a better Fantasy week if he got some sort of touchdown. The Jagaurs play Buffalo in Week 12 and the Bills have an average defense. Consider Garrard a No. 2 QB, unless you other QB has a worse matchup.
News: The Jaguars announced Monday QB Byron Leftwich won't practice this week, giving his injured left ankle time to rest before making a decision regarding season-ending surgery. Coach Jack Del Rio said a doctor advised Leftwich to rest his ankle "another week or two and to re-evaluate at that point." Leftwich declined to discuss the injury in detail. "I'm just tired of talking about it at this point," Leftwich said. "The focus needs to be on the New York Giants and not my ankle, especially for a guy that's not even playing. The focus doesn't need to be on that. I'm going to make sure I have no comments on the ankle. I'll try to give you a better explanation next week some time."
Analysis: With Leftwich not practicing, David Garrard will start against the Giants. Garrard is coming off a poor game against Houston where he threw four interceptions, so consider Garrard a No. 2 Fantasy QB this week.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard threw a career-high four interceptions against Houston but apparently will not feel the brunt of criticism from coaches this week. "Quarterback is tied to a lot of other people. It's pretty difficult to be a great quarterback or play great at quarterback without some people playing well around you," coach Jack Del Rio said.
Analysis: With Byron Leftwich getting closer to a return, Garrard's days as a starter could be numbered. But he is expected to start in Week 11 against the Giants and should be considered a No. 2 QB.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard finished Week 10 vs. Houston with 214 yards on 15-for-34 passing. He was intercepted four times in a losing effort.
Analysis: Garrard could be on the hot seat now with Byron Leftwich seemingly healthy enough to play. We don't recommend him as a Fantasy option for Week 11 vs. the N.Y. Giants.
News: The Texans took advantage of an ailing Byron Leftwich to capture a decisive win over Jacksonville in the teams' first meeting this season. They will face a different challenge this time, with the mobile David Garrard behind center and Leftwich watching from the sideline. Leftwich managed just 125 yards passing in the 27-7 loss to Houston on Oct. 22 and hasn't played since. Garrard won the last two games to improve to 6-1 as a starter in the last two years. "It will be like playing against a new team because he doesn't do the same things that Leftwich does and he's going to throw a totally different look at us," cornerback Dunta Robinson said. Garrard threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns last week in a 37-7 win over Tennessee while Leftwich continued to deal with an injured left ankle. He also has run for 50 yards in the last two games for Jacksonville (5-3). Though the bulk of Houston's defense is new this season, the Texans (2-6) have seen Garrard before. He threw for a career-high 292 yards in leading the Jaguars to a 38-20 win over Houston last season while Leftwich was injured.
Analysis: Consider Garrard a decent No. 2 starting QB this week against the Texans. The Jaguars don't have a prolific offense, but the Texans struggle to stop anyone on defense.
News: David Garrard is likely to be the Jaguars' starting QB on Sunday against the Houston Texans. Coach Jack Del Rio acknowledged that likelihood at his Monday press conference. “Byron (Leftwich) is about 85-90 percent and is probably not going to get better than that until he has a long time off. In my opinion, he's about as good as he's going to get,” said Del Rio, who talked about the probable need for offseason clean-up surgery on Leftwich's left ankle. Garrard has been the Jaguars' starting quarterback in the last two games, each of them having resulted in victory. He led a 37-7 dismantling of the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, as Garrard threw for three touchdowns and a 120.6 passer rating.
Analysis: Garrard proved he can be a serviceable backup Fantasy QB with three touchdowns in Week 9 against Tennessee. Consider him a good sleeper for Week 10 against Houston. As for Leftwich, keep him reserved in all leagues.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard started and completed 12-of-22 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns vs. Tennessee in Week 9. He also rushed for 14 yards. Garrard is not sure if he'll start next week. "I'll just wait until Jack, Byron or my wife tells me I'm going to start," said Garrard, who learned he was starting last week from his wife and this week from Leftwich. "This is normal. No one has ever told me they are handing me the reins. Byron is the starting quarterback of this team until somebody tells me otherwise."
Analysis: Let the quarterback controversy begin in Jacksonville. Garrard is a fair-armed passer who can run with the ball if a play breaks down, but he doesn't have the command of a Byron Leftwich. If he starts vs. Houston in Week 10, he should be used in deeper leagues if your starting QB has a bad matchup.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard will make his second consecutive start in place of Byron Leftwich on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars host Tennessee. Leftwich said Thursday that coach Jack Del Rio told him before practice he was sticking with Garrard, who led the Jaguars to a 13-6 victory at Philadelphia last week and improved to 5-1 as a starter the past two seasons. Del Rio has repeatedly said that Leftwich, if healthy, would be the starter. Leftwich declared himself healthy enough to play earlier this week and said he practiced without pain Wednesday and Thursday. But Del Rio seemingly didn't agree, a move that could create a full-fledged quarterback controversy in Jacksonville and possibly sour the relationship between Del Rio and Leftwich. The coach downgraded Leftwich to questionable and was unavailable for comment Thursday. Leftwich initially hurt his left ankle Oct. 1 at Washington. The injury flared up nearly two weeks later, but Leftwich convinced coaches he was OK to play two days later at Houston. Leftwich then played poorly in a 27-7 loss, and Del Rio considered benching his starter. Leftwich missed two practices last week and threw his shoulder pads to the ground when he learned Del Rio wanted Garrard to take all the practice repetitions. Garrard completed 10 of 17 passes for 87 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in his first start, which was in a strong wind. He was sacked once, but ran eight times for 36 yards and had a key 13-yard scramble on fourth down that set up the only touchdown of the game.
Analysis: Bench Leftwich immediately in all leagues this week. And start Garrard only if necessary against the Titans. Look for the Jaguars to run the ball and not throw the ball too much.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio insisted on not naming a starting quarterback Monday to keep the Titans guessing. "I'd just as soon hold that competitive advantage and not give it to them," Del Rio said. David Garrard started and led Jacksonville to a win at Philadelphia in place of Byron Leftwich, who is nursing an ankle injury. Del Rio also added that he would start Leftwich if he knew he was healthy. Leftwich told the paper he expected to be "full go" for practice this week.
Analysis: Monitor this situation as whomever starts for Jacksonville in Week 9 will be a solid bye-week replacement QB as they host the defensively weak Titans.
News: David Garrard had just 87 yards passing while playing for the injured Byron Leftwich (heel) in Week 8 at Philadelphia. He did not have a touchdown or an interception.
Analysis: Leftwich will likely be placed on the injury report once again for Week 9, but should be able to suit up with an extra week of rest and proper care. Consider Garrard an obsolete Fantasy option even if he were to see a start against Tennessee.
News: The Jaguars will start David Garrard, not Byron Leftwich (ankle) in Week 8 vs. Philadelphia. Leftwich was listed as the emergency No. 3 QB.
Analysis: Reserve Leftwich in all Fantasy leagues. Garrard should only be considered a last-ditch Fantasy starter for Week 8 because he'll face a defense that gives up a ton of passing yards.
News: According to ESPN.com, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has named David Garrard as the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Eagles replacing the injured Byron Leftwich, who remains questionable on the injury report. Leftwich is dealing with a sprained left ankle that flared up prior to Week 7's game against the Texans. Del Rio indicated after last week's loss at Houston that he did not feel the ankle was a factor in Leftwich's performance. He then later changed his mind after reviewing tape of the game.
Analysis: Leftwich's performance against the Texans was not pretty. He completed 14-of-28 passes for 125 yards and no touchdowns. He looked out of rhythm all day and it must not have settled well with Del Rio as the week progressed. For now, keep Leftwich on your bench because there has not been definitive word this is a long-term change. Garrard is not a strong Fantasy option for Week 8 going up against the Eagles defense. They have had their struggles as of late, but still lead the league in sacks, and will more than likely bring the pressure on Sunday with Garrard making his first start of the season.
News: Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich missed practice Thursday because of his sore left ankle, increasing the chances that backup David Garrard will start at Philadelphia. Leftwich also sat out practice last Friday because of the injury, but convinced coaches he was OK to play at Houston. Leftwich then missed several open receivers and failed to rally the Jaguars from a 10-point deficit. He remained questionable on the injury report, but Garrard took most of the snaps a day after coach Jack Del Rio had the quarterbacks split repetitions. Leftwich said Thursday he could still play against the Eagles without practicing - he's done it before - but Del Rio was so upset over the situation last week that Leftwich has little chance of talking his way into the starting lineup again.
Analysis: Neither QB is worth going with at Philadelphia. Garrard has shown in the past he can quarterback in the NFL, but he wouldn't have a favorbale matchup if he were to start.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has changed his stance again, saying quarterback Byron Leftwich's sore left ankle was indeed a problem in last week's loss to Houston. He even decided to have Leftwich and backup David Garrard split repetitions in practice Wednesday. "There was no question based on what I saw that there was a problem," Del Rio said Wednesday, reversing his opinion from two days earlier. "He's a proud guy, he's a tough guy, but we've got to find a way to communicate so I can do the right thing for our football team. Basically, it was a situation where he really tried to go and wanted to go and I believe for the right reasons. But it didn't go well."
Analysis: David Garrard would start in his place; neither QB is worth going with at Philadelphia in Week 8.
News: Jaguars RB LaBrandon Toefield, RB Montell Owens, TE Kyle Brady, WR Chad Owens, TE Marcedes Lewis and QB David Garrard all dressed in Week 7 against the Texans but did not record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: None of these players are recommended Fantasy options at this time for Week 8 at Philadelphia.
News: According to sources close to CBS SportsLine.com, Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich is dressed for Sunday's game against the Texans and there is a "95 percent" chance he will start. However, nothing has been confirmed yet to Leftwich's playing status.
Analysis: Early reports out of Houston are that at 11:30 a.m. that Leftwich was not on the field warming up but backup QBs David Garrard and Quinn Gray were. More than likely if Leftwich cannot play, Garrard will be under center for the Jaguars. But with so much uncertainity still surrounding the situation, it is not recommended you insert Garrard into your starting Fantasy lineup for Week 7.
News: Byron Leftwich's sore left ankle felt better Saturday, but the quarterback remained questionable for the Jacksonville Jaguars' game at Houston. The fourth-year starter was scheduled to fly with the team to Houston later in the day. Whether he plays against the Texans on Sunday will be a game-time decision. Backup David Garrard, who went 4-1 last season in place of Leftwich, will start if Leftwich is unable to play.
Analysis: Leftwich missed practice Friday, wore a protective boot and then had an MRI. Results showed "nothing serious," team spokesman Dan Edwards said Saturday. Edwards said Leftwich was "feeling a little bit better." Leftwich missed practice Friday, wore a protective boot and then had an MRI. Results showed "nothing serious," team spokesman Dan Edwards said Saturday. Edwards said Leftwich was "feeling a little bit better." Look for healthier alternatives if at all possible. You'll have to monitor this situation up until inactives are announced about an hour prior to kickoff.
News: Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich missed practice Friday and was scheduled to have tests on his sore left ankle, the same one that caused him to miss five games last season. Leftwich was added to the team's injury report and listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Houston. He took his normal practice repetitions Wednesday and Thursday, but coach Jack Del Rio said he experienced soreness in his ankle Friday morning. Leftwich did not attend the workout and was not available for comment. Del Rio said Leftwich would have an MRI later on Friday. "Any time your starting quarterback misses time, there's a concern," Del Rio said, adding that he will try to get backups David Garrard and Quinn Gray ready if needed. Leftwich fractured a bone in his left ankle last season and missed the final five games. He returned for Jacksonville's first-round playoff game at New England, but was clearly rusty. Team officials were unsure whether Leftwich's soreness was related to last year's injury.
Analysis: Leftwich has a perfect matchup Sunday playing against the Texans, but now it seems his status is in jeporady. We will probably know a lot more once the results from the MRI come back, until then, just sit tight and try to relax. There is no need to rush out and pick up Garrard just yet.
News: TE Kyle Brady, backup QB David Garrard, WR Cortez Hankton, TE Marcedes Lewis, WR Montell Owens, RB Alvin Pearman and LS/TE Joe Zelenka were able to play in Week 4 at Washington, but they did not record any offensive statistics.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth using in Week 5 for their matchup against the Jets.
News: Notable Jaguars players who dressed but did not record a stat in Week 3 at Indianapolis include: RB Montell Owens, WR Cortez Hankton, LS/TE Joe Zelenka and backup QB David Garrard.
Analysis: None of these players should be considered for regular use in Fantasy Football leagues.
News: David Garrard dressed for Week 2 against the Steelers but he did not record any offensive statistics.
Analysis: Garrard is not worth using so long as QB Byron Leftwich is upright. Keep him off Fantasy rosters for now.
News: David Garrard dressed for Week 1 against the Cowboys but he did not record any offensive statistics.
Analysis: Garrard is not worth using for Week 2 against the Steelers.
News: Starter Byron Leftwich has completed 10 of 16 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, but also thrown an interception and been sacked three times this preseason. Backup David Garrard worked primarily with the starters last week against Carolina, but fumbled three times, threw two interceptions and was sacked once. Coach Jack Del Rio wants to get third-string quarterback Quinn Gray some repetitions with the starters against Tampa Bay (1-1). But it probably won't happen unless the offense looks sharp behind Leftwich.
Analysis: Garrard should only be drafted in the deepest of Fantasy leagues, but once Leftwich goes down, he becomes a No. 2 Fantasy QB worth adding off the waiver wire.
News: In two preseason games, Jaguars QB David Garrard has completed 13-of-22 passes for 258 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. He's also rushed for 16 yards on four tries. Garrard is slated to back up Byron Leftwich in Jacksonville this season.
Analysis: Garrard is always a good option to have on a Fantasy team -- once Leftwich gets hurt. He has shown in the past that he is capable of running an NFL offense and can put up stats thanks to his above-average arm and excellent speed. Garrard should only be drafted in the deepest of Fantasy Football leagues, but once Leftwich goes down, he becomes a No. 2 Fantasy QB worth adding off the waiver wire.
News: Jaguars backup QB David Garrard threw for 1,117 yards with four TDs and one pick in five starts at the end of the season when starter Byron Leftwich got hurt. Garrard also re-established himself as a running threat, gaining 172 rush yards and three rush TDs.
Analysis: Despite the good stats, Garrard still hasn't thrown for 300 yards in his career. He's not likely to be a starter next season, so don't put too much stock into Garrard's Fantasy value other than being fair insurance for Leftwich.
News: Jags QB David Garrard will not start at New England in the first round of the playoffs. Byron Leftwich (ankle) will take his place.
Analysis: Garrard won't see action unless Leftwich gets hurt.
News: Byron Leftwich (ankle) will be a gametime decision for the regular-season finale. "I'm not going to declare whether he'll play until I have to," head coach Jack Del Rio said.
Analysis: There's a chance that Leftwich, not David Garrard, will start against Tennessee. However, there's also a chance that both will see time under center. Be sure to monitor this situation over the weekend.
News: Jags QB Byron Leftwich (ankle) will be back at practice this week and could play vs. Tennessee in Week 17.
Analysis: Leftwich and Garrard could end up splitting reps, making both unusable in Fantasy leagues this week.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 18-of-31 passing for a career-high 292 yards with a touchdown and 40 rushing yards at Houston in Week 16.
Analysis: Garrard has played well against bad teams. Look for him to keep it up vs. Tennessee in Week 17.
News: QB David Garrard has played most of four games and is only averaging 5.76 yards per pass attempt, while Byron Leftwich was averaging 7.03 yards per attempt before he was injured. Garrard is still playing well, but just isn't playing to the level of Leftwich.
Analysis: Garrard is still usable from a Fantasy perspective so long as you don't expect monster results from his play. He faces a young Texans secondary in Week 16.
News: David Garrard 21-for-40 for 216 with no interceptions in Week 15 vs. San Francisco. He also rushed five times for 27 yards and a TD.
Analysis: Garrard is a decent replacement if your Fantasy QB has been less than adequate. He has a great matchup vs. Houston in Week 16.
News: David Garrard threw for only 98 yards in the first half but wound up with 250 yards with a fourth-period surge. He didn't throw an interception. The problem is that much of the yardage came late in the game when the Colts were already ahead 26-3.
Analysis: Garrard has an unbelieveable matchup this week against the 49ers (and for two weeks thereafter), but might be held to a 'caretaker' role that nets him 150 yards and just one touchdown. Garrard should only start for Fantasy owners whose middle-of-the-road QB options have tough matchups this week.
News: David Garrard threw for 250 yards and recorded two touchdowns (1 pass, 1 rush) in Sunday's 26-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Analysis: Garrard should produce another nice stat line in Week 15 against San Francisco and is a solid option in leagues with 12-plus teams.
News: Jags backup QB David Garrard will play in his most meaningful NFL game in Week 14 vs. Indianapolis as the Jaguars try to solidify their playoff spot while dealing a blow to their division rival. He has faced Indy before ... as a rookie in 2002. He was 13-of-26 for 135 yards, his first 100-yard game.
Analysis: Garrard has a great schedule to finish the season, but should sit down for owners in Week 14.
News: Jaguars QB David Garrard was 11-of-20 passing for 116 yards with two scores, an interception and 26 rushing yards at Cleveland in Week 13.
Analysis: Garrard did just enough not to lose the game for Jacksonville. He will continue to be efficient but not effective vs. Indianapolis in Week 14.
News: David Garrard has done very little in his fourth-career NFL start in Week 13 at Cleveland. He is 5-of-9 for only 43 yards, no touchdowns and one interception against the Browns.
Analysis: Garrard has missed badly on his four incompletions. The good news for Garrard owners is that the Jaguars find themselves down 11 at halftime, so they will obviously employ a more pass-oriented offense in the second half.
News: David Garrard is likely to start in Week 13 at Cleveland after Byron Leftwich suffered a broken bone in his left ankle in Week 12 in Arizona.
Analysis: Garrard is a solid play in Fantasy leagues of 14 or more teams against the very giving Cleveland defense, but only if your primary option is facing a difficult matchup.
News: For the second week in a row, QB David Garrard has a nice game. He was 4 of 7 passing for 32 yards and ran three times for 21 yards and a touchdown. He got his reps started with two minutes to play in the first half.
Analysis: Garrard is a nice Fantasy QB if Byron Leftwich were to lose his starting position, which will only happen if he gets hurt.
News: Jags backup QB David Garrard was 9 of 13 passing for 101 yards and a TD to Ernest Wilford (which ricocheted off a teammate) in Jacksonville's win over Miami.
