News: The New Orleans Saints have placed veteran running back Ladell Betts on injured reserve. Betts played in eight games, gaining 150 yards on 45 carries with two touchdowns. He also had 23 catches for 141 yards. Betts sat out the past two games with a neck injury and now Reggie Bush is back and running back Pierre Thomas appears close to returning.
Analysis: Betts never had a shot to be useful for Fantasy owners. He shouldn't be owned in any leagues.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts (neck) was officially inactive for Week 13 at Cincinnati.
Analysis: As part of the backfield committee in New Orleans, Betts was likely to see limited action Sunday had he been active, so continue to ignore him almost all Fantasy formats.
News: The Saints ruled RB Ladell Betts (neck) out for Week 13 on Friday. New Orleans visits Cincinnati.
Analysis: As part of the backfield committee in New Orleans, Betts was likely to see limited action Sunday, so continue to ignore him almost all Fantasy formats.
News: The Saints have ruled RB Ladell Betts (head, neck) out for Week 12 at Dallas.
Analysis: Along with Chris Ivory, Betts hurt himself in Week 11 against Seattle. As part of the backfield committee in New Orleans, Betts was likely to see less action on Thursday with Reggie Bush expected to finally return, so you can probably drop Betts in most formats at this point.
News: Saints RB LaDell Betts (head/neck) missed practice for a second straight day Tuesday as New Orleans continued preparation for it's Thanksgiving Day game against the Cowboys.
Analysis: Betts has been seeing some action with injuries to Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush but he still remains a backup for New Orleans. Bush could be back for Week 12, which would push Betts even further down the depth chart. Healthy or not, consider the 31-year-old a low-end Fantasy RB and someone to avoid against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts (head, neck) did not participate in practice on Monday as the team prepared for Week 12 against the Cowboys. He did not have a carry in Sunday's win over the Seahawks but caught three passes for 37 yards.
News: New Orleans RB Ladell Betts caught three passes for 37 yards in Week 11 as he filled in for Chris Ivory. Ivory got banged up a bit, but would return in the second half. Betts did not have any carries for the Saints in their 34-19 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: Betts saw some more action as Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush were still inactive. Coach Sean Payton said after the game that Bush has a good chance of playing on Thanksgiving in Dallas. If that happens, Betts will go down the depth chart. He should be viewed as a handcuff option at best in Fantasy leagues right now.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts put the icing on the cake in a win Week 9 against the Panthers with a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring at 34-3. Betts had a team-high 13 carries for 31 yards, with his longest rush going for 12 yards. Betts had one carry for 1 yards. He has two rushing touchdowns in seven games.
Analysis: Betts also had 13 carries in the Saints' first game against Carolina in Week 4. Although, he got extra work late in Week 9 after Chris Ivory messed up his shoulder. The Saints' RB situation will get messy once Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush return from injury. That could come as soon as Week 11 against the Seahawks, when the Saints return from their bye. Hold off adding Betts in Fantasy until we see the running back situation leading up to Week 11.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts was becoming a receiving threat for the Saints, but he caught just one pass from Drew Brees, it totaled 0 yards. He did carry the ball three times for 8 yards in the Week 8 win over the Steelers.
Analysis: Betts figures to be the third wheel in the Saints rotation after both Julius Jones and Chris Ivory saw the ball more than Betts. He should remain a Fantasy reserve as a handcuff for the depleted Saints RB corps.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts did not see a carry in Week 7, but he caught eight passes for 48 yards. In Week 8, he will have a hard time getting those kind of numbers against the Steelers, who sport the NFL's top-ranked rush defense. Not only do they allow just 63.7 yards per game, but they give up less than 3 yards per carry to opposing RBs. Against RBs who catch the ball out of the backfield like Betts can, Pittsburgh has allowed four different RBs to catch at least four passes in a game.
Analysis: Betts has 18 catches in four games for the Saints and that seems like it will be his role on Sunday Night. He'll have some low-end appeal in points-per-reception formats, especially with RBs Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush injured. The Saints have a tough matchup against the Steelers in Week 8, so we'll call Betts a very low-end Fantasy RB in the deepest of formats.
News: He may no longer be a factor in the running game with the emergence of Chris Ivory and the acquisition of Julius Jones -- in fact, he didn't get a single carry on Sunday -- but Saints RB Ladell Betts showed he still has something to offer Week 7 against the Browns. He caught eight passes for 48 yards. He now has a total of 18 catches in four games.
Analysis: Betts needs to show he's good at something, because once Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush return from injury, the Saints are going to have to trim the fat at the running back position. Betts probably got to catch the ball a little more often than usual this week since the Saints fell behind early, so you shouldn't feel obligated to add him in all points-per-reception leagues. He'll have some low-end appeal in those formats, though. The Saints have a tough matchup against the Steelers in Week 8.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts, who had been splitting carries evenly with Chris Ivory with Pierre Thomas sidelined by an ankle injury, got only seven touches last week as Ivory broke out for 158 yards on 15 carries. With Thomas expected to sit again Week 7 against the Browns, Betts will likely have to settle for a backup role behind Ivory. The Browns rank 23rd against the run, allowing 120.2 yards per game.
Analysis: Betts could still end up stealing a carry at the goal line, as he did last week, but that's too much of a shot in the dark for Fantasy purposes. Ivory proved last week he's the superior back of the two, so the Saints have no reason to devote more than a handful of touches to Betts. He's no better than a No. 4 Fantasy RB this week, which means he shouldn't be starting in most leagues.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts may have become obsolete during the Week 6 game against Tampa Bay. With Chris Ivory rushing for over 150 yards and Julius Jones looking fairly solid as well, Betts was limited to just six carries for 20 yards. He did score a late touchdown from one yard out with under two minutes to play in the game. That TD may have gone to Ivory, however, but Ivory had just left the game after suffering a minor injury. Betts added one catch for 6 yards.
Analysis: The addition of Jones plus the breakout of Ivory, plus the fact that New Orleans could get back Reggie Bush and/or Pierre Thomas in Week 7, seem to make Betts a forgotten man in New Orleans. Despite the late touchdown, we cannot recommend his Fantasy use in Week 7 against the Browns.
News: Saints RBs Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts will still likely receive the bulk of the carries in Week 6, even though Saints coach Sean Payton said newly acquired RB Julius Jones has a grasp of the offense since being signed Tuesday.
Analysis: Betts last faced the Buccaneers in 2009 and only got one carry for minus-1 yards with three catches for 21 yards and no scores. The New Orleans running back situation is an ugly one at the moment. Fantasy owners are just going to have to pay close attention to what happens in Tampa. The player who gets the bulk of the carries could conceivably play well against the Buccaneers, which have given up 143 yards and a touchdown and 144 yards in consecutive weeks to Pittsburgh's Rashard Mendenhall and Cincinnati's Cedric Benson, respectively. That said, unless that player is Thomas, it seems like there are too many unknowns to start any of the other RBs on the Saints' roster. Betts is probably a worse option than Ivory considering Ivory is likely to get goal-line carries.
News: With Pierre Thomas missing a second consecutive game Week 5 at Arizona, Saints RB Ladell Betts only was given 10 carries for 44 yards against the Cardinals. He evenly split carries with Chris Ivory, who rushed 10 times for 39 yards in the contest. Neither player scored and neither has looked very good in place of Thomas. Thomas could return from his ankle injury Week 6 at Tampa Bay but the Saints went out and signed RB Julius Jones from the Seahawks anyway just in case. Betts last faced the Buccaneers in 2009 and only got one carry for minus-1 yards with three catches for 21 yards and no scores.
Analysis: The New Orleans running back situation is an ugly one at the moment. Fantasy owners are just going to have to pay close attention to what happens throughout the practice week.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts got the start in Week 5 against the Cardinals with Pierre Thomas inactive but did not have one of his better days. He carried the ball 10 times for 44 yards but had two costly mistakes. He had a pass thrown his way in the second quarter but was unable to make the catch and deflected the ball into the arms of LB Paris Lenon. That turnover led to an Arizona touchdown and the 31-year-old lost a fumble in the fourth quarter that DB Kerry Rhodes scooped up and returned 27 yards for a touchdown. Betts also caught five passes for 26 yards in the 30-20 loss.
Analysis: Betts outrushed Chris Ivory in Week 5 but only by five yards. The two each received 10 carries but the Saints were unable to get their running game going with Thomas out. While he nearly equaled his season total in rushing yards in one game, he was far from impressive on Sunday. Fantasy owners should check on Thomas' status throughout the week to see if he will be able to return. If not, Betts and Ivory should be the ones toting the rock in Week 6 against the Buccaneers. Betts has rushed for 91 yards on 23 carries this season and will be a serviceable Fantasy RB if Thomas is unable to go.
News: Saints head coach Sean Payton ruled out RB Pierre Thomas for Week 5. He's dealing with an ankle sprain that must be severe given that this will be his second week out in a row. Ladell Betts and Chris Ivory are expected to divvy up the rushing workload. Ivory is on the injury report with a knee tweak, but he should play on Sunday.
Analysis: We had an inkling earlier this week that Thomas wouldn't play, and this cements it. Ivory is who we like better because he'll play as much as Betts and perhaps more if the game gets out of hand in the fourth quarter -- the Saints would rather run the inexperienced guy than the veteran with the surgically repaired knees. Consider Ivory a No. 3 RB for the week while Betts is more of a low-end replacement choice.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts may be the go-to guy in the backfield against Arizona in Week 5 with RBs Pierre Thomas (ankle) and Chris Ivory (knee) still banged up. Betts was versatile out of the backfield last week with 13 carries for 47 yards and four catches for 23 yards in the win over Carolina. Arizona ranks 30th in the league against the rush, having given up an average of 154.8 yards per game this season.
Analysis: Betts received praise from QB Drew Brees after his performance last week and could be in line to see the bulk of the carries if Thomas is unable to go against the Cardinals. Even if Thomas is banged up, Betts should still see some decent chances. Betts has shown that he can put up some numbers when given the opportunity and might be worth taking a look at in Week 5. Fantasy owners should check back for Thomas' status but consider Betts as a No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option against Arizona.
News:Drew Brees says you can't put a number on the value of Ladell Betts -- at least not after Sunday's victory over winless Carolina. Brees said Monday that while Betts only had 47 rushing yards and four catches for 23 yards, the running back was the MVP of the offense in the Saints' surprisingly close 16-14 victory, calling him "awesome." Rotating with untested rookie Chris Ivory, he accounted for a team-high five first downs and consistently put the Saints in short-yardage situations. On one play, he caught a swing pass and bowled over two defenders near the sideline for an 8-yard gain to move the chains. "Coming off of an ACL injury, that was encouraging to see," coach Sean Payton said. "There's a calm, veteran presence to him. He's confident. He inspired us to some degree, especially with that play on the sideline."
Analysis: Heady words about a player who had not even been on the roster for two full weeks and hadn't played in a regular season game since tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee against Dallas last November when he was with the Washington Redskins. Pierre Thomas is expected to be back soon, so Betts' value could be reduced to nil in Fantasy, but the Saints' glowing words about Betts suggests that he's earned a roster spot going forward. Betts is worth carrying only on the deepest of seasonal rosters in Fantasy -- unless Thomas' pesky ankle injury keeps him sidelined longer. We'll let you know if it does.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts ran 13 times for 47 yards and caught four passes for 23 yards in a Week 4 win over the Panthers. With RB Pierre Thomas hurt, Betts got the start over rookie RB Chris Ivory, but the two ended up splitting carries 50/50.
Analysis: Betts, who was only re-signed on Sept. 22 by the Saints, provided a nice veteran presence in the backfield on Sunday as New Orleans edged Carolina with a late John Carney field goal. Betts was the favorite backfield target for QB Drew Brees on Sunday, as he was targeted five times to Ivory's zero, but his 3.6 yards-per-carry average wasn't anything to write home about. In Week 5, when New Orleans visits Arizona, Betts will likely start again if Thomas is still banged up, but will only be worth using in very deep Fantasy formats as an emergency bye-week replacement option.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts is starting against the Panthers Week 4 with Pierre Thomas inactive for the game. Chris Ivory might also see carries in the game.
Analysis: Betts is not going to be asked to get a starter's share of carries with Ivory and DeShawn Wynn in tow. Betts is definitely going to get a major boost in Fantasy value with this news but we're not sure it is enough to warrant using him in Fantasy. At best, he is just a No. 3 Fantasy RB if you have Thomas and need a replacement in a pinch. Ivory probably has the higher upside.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts said he's received more reps in practice this week and is preparing for a bigger role with the injuries riddling t the Saints backfield. He said he feels pretty good with the playbook, and being with the team for part of training camp helped his learning process. Betts has not carried the ball yet this season.
Analysis: He will back up Pierre Thomas in Week 4, but isn't likely to see enough touches to be worth adding in Fantasy play just yet. Owners are better off seeing exactly how Sean Payton uses him before considering claiming him off the wire.
News: The Saints have signed RB Ladell Betts to a one-year deal, worth roughly $800,000.
Analysis: Betts, who was originally released by the Saints earlier this month, tore ligaments in his knee last season. He will back up Pierre Thomas, but isn't likely to see enough touches to be worth adding in Fantasy play just yet. Owners are better off seeing exactly how Sean Payton uses him before considering claiming him off the wire.
News: With Reggie Bush likely out for over a month, NFL.com reports the Saints brought in RB Ladell Betts for a workout on Tuesday. Betts was released by the Saints earlier this month.
Analysis: Betts tore ligaments in his knee last season, but was in camp with the Saints and played in the final two preseason contests. He will just be a backup option if he does re-sign with New Orleans, so continue to ignore Betts in Fantasy play.
News:Ladell Betts' comeback from a serious knee injury is on hold for now. The New Orleans Saints released the former longtime Washington Redskins starter on Friday, his agent, Anthony Agnone, confirmed in an e-mail. Betts has been trying to come back from an injury last November in which he tore ligaments in his left knee. He played against the Titans, rushing seven times for 38 yards and catching four passes for 21 yards. Instead of sticking with Betts, who was vying for a backup role behind Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, the Saints elected to hold onto fourth-year pro DeShawn Wynn and Chris Ivory.
Analysis: Betts may or may not latch on with a new team, but Fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned either way. His best days are behind him. Keep him off of rosters.
News: Saints coach Sean Payton said he isn't sure RB Ladell Betts is completely recovered from an ACL injury. However, Betts is expected to play Thursday vs. Tennessee. Payton said Betts probably will be in for no more than 15 plays.
Analysis: Betts got his first taste of preseason action on Friday against San Diego, but he had just two carries for 15 yards. The Saints are looking to build depth behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush at running back, but they need a healthy option and Betts might not be it. Even if he lands a roster spot, he won't be worth owning in Fantasy until he gets significant playing time.
News: Saints RB Ladell Betts (knee) was able to play in Friday's preseason game against the Chargers. He carried twice for 15 yards and also caught a pass for a 3-yard gain. For Betts, it was his first preseason action.
Analysis: Betts is still trying to return from a torn ACL injury he sustained in November with the Redskins. He could earn the No. 3 RB job behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. If Betts wins the job, then he could be worth a late-round flier in deep leagues, but we wouldn't advise drafting Betts in the majority of leagues in 2010.
News: It's important for Saints RB Ladell Betts to get repetitions in practice so the Saints staff can see what they have, coach Sean Payton said Monday. Betts is still trying to return from a torn ACL injury he sustained in November with the Redskins. He could earn the No. 3 RB job behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush.
Analysis: Betts has had some great years for the Redskins as the backup to Clinton Portis. Now he will be the backup to two running backs, at best, if he wins the job. P.J. Hill recently injured himself so if Betts can prove healthy, the job could be his. Still, we wouldn't advise drafting Betts in the majority of leagues in 2010.
News: Newly signed Saints RB Ladell Betts did practice Wednesday morning. Coach Sean Payton said he wanted to ease Betts onto the practice field as he's trying to recover from ACL surgery he had in November.
Analysis: This is encouraging news that Betts was able to practice, and he could make things interesting for fellow backups P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory as they vie for the carries available now that Lynell Hamilton (ACL) is out for the year. If Betts wins the job as the No. 3 RB behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush then he could be worth a late-round flier in deep leagues, but we wouldn't advise drafting Betts in the majority of leagues in 2010.
News: Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday that RB Ladell Betts, 31, will be eased back into action, but he did not provide a timetable as to when Betts would be ready to play. Betts worked out for the Saints nearly two weeks ago before RB Lynell Hamilton tore his ACL. Betts said he's not sure when he'd be ready for any kind of preseason game and still has to get back into football shape. "I'd like just fit on wherever I can," Betts said. "I consider myself an in between the tackles-type runner." Betts said he hopes to be on the field as soon as possible. "I haven't played football since November, so it's just going to be a work in progress," Betts said. "I'll have to test it out with the pads on."
Analysis: Continue to monitor Betts in his return to the NFL, and he could be a long shot to make the final roster in New Orleans. At best, Betts will be the No. 3 RB in New Orleans behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, and he is competing with P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory for playing time. Our suggestion is to ignore Betts in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports the Saints signed RB Ladell Betts on Monday. Betts is working his way back from last year's knee injury, and he will compete for backup carries behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. Betts will compete with P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory for playing time as the Saints try to replace the injured Lynell Hamilton.
Analysis: We don't expect much from Betts this year. Thomas and Bush are entrenched in their roles, and we're not convinced Betts will even make the final roster with Ivory already off to a good start. Continue to monitor how Betts does in the preseason, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: Free-agent RB Ladell Betts has had tryouts with the Broncos and the Saints recently. The Broncos reportedly made an offer to the veteran rusher but he passed. Betts is working his way back from torn knee ligaments suffered last season.
Analysis: Betts was a serviceable backup running back for the Redskins previously with some good spot starts mixed in. He's unlikely to garner much attention in Fantasy regardless of where he signs.
News: Running backs Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright were among 10 players cut by the Washington Redskins on the eve of free agency as the Redskins cleared salary cap space in the first major moves under the new brain trust of general manager Bruce Allen and coach Mike Shanahan. Additionally, RB Quinton Ganther was not tendered and is a free agent. CBSSports.com has learned that Ganther has already drawn interest from one team.
Analysis: The only rusher worth a look here is Ganther, who showed flashes in a limited stint with the Redskins in 2009. But he'll likely support a starter in another city. We could be at the end of the line for Cartwright and Betts, who is coming back from a torn ACL and MCL.
News:Ladell Betts tells the Redskins' official Web site that he plans on being ready for the start of training camp. He suffered an unspecified knee ligament injury, believed to be a torn ACL and MCL. "The rehab after knee ligament surgery is anywhere from six months to a year, but my goal is six months," Betts said. "I want to get ready for training camp, just like Carlos Rogers two years ago. We hurt ourselves around the same time of the season."
Analysis: It would be a surprise to see Betts ready to play come July; the more likely scenario is that he starts the 2010 season on the PUP list. He's not expected to be a relevant Fantasy option in drafts this summer anyway.
News: The Redskins' running back situation continues to get worse. Head coach Jim Zorn said Monday that RB Ladell Betts is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, and he also said that concussed RB Clinton Portis will miss Week 12 at Philadelphia and possibly even Week 13 vs. New Orleans as he progressively improves from a hit to the head in Week 9 at Atlanta. Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther are expected to shoulder much of the rushing workload for the team's next game at Philadelphia; Cartwright totaled 140 yards on 20 touches in Week 11 while Ganther had 6 yards on three carries. Ex-Redskins running back Marcus Mason might also re-sign.
Analysis: Betts can be safely dropped in Fantasy play while Portis should remain benched -- you might even want to consider cutting him if you desperately need the roster spot. Cartwright is a powerful runner with good hands, and with a sizable workload headed his way he's appealing as a No. 3 Fantasy RB. Ganther might see some work while Mason would be a backup; both are low-end options at best for now.
News: The Washington Post is reporting that Washington RB Ladell Betts has a torn MCL in his knee. Betts will undergo an MRI on Monday after leaving the Week 11 game at Dallas early in the 1st quarter with the injury. "It is bleak," coach Jim Zorn said. "Being 3-7 is bleak."
Analysis: Betts was starting for the injured Clinton Portis already. This situation is ugly now for the Redskins. Betts was a No. 3 Fantasy RB for the game before getting injured. Stay tuned for the practice week leading up to Week 12 at Philadelphia to find out whether Betts or Portis will be able to return but as of right now it seems neither are likely.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed four times for 5 yards before leaving the game with a knee injury. The injury is serious enough that the Redskins ruled him out for the game.
Analysis: Betts was starting for the injured Clinton Portis already. This situation is ugly now for the Redskins. Betts was a No. 3 Fantasy RB for the game before getting injured. Stay tuned for the practice week leading up to Week 12 at Philadelphia to find out whether Betts or Portis will be able to return.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts (ankle) is starting at Dallas in Week 11. Clinton Portis is out as expected.
Analysis: Betts will start again for the Redskins against the Cowboys, but it's a tough matchup for him. The Cowboys have been stellar in run defense. Dallas has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher, and only one running back (Michael Turner in Week 7) has scored against the Cowboys since Week 1. Last week, Dallas held Ryan Grant to 19 carries for 79 yards. Consider Betts a No. 3 Fantasy RB.
News: According to the Redskins official Twitter page, RB Clinton Portis (concussion) will not play Sunday at Dallas. The report says Portis still has some "blurriness" from the concussion, according to coach Jim Zorn. Portis missed Week 10 against Denver after sustaining the concussion in Week 9 against Atlanta.
Analysis: Ladell Betts will start again for the Redskins against the Cowboys, but it's a tough matchup for him. Consider Betts, who was listed as probable for the game on Friday with an ankle injury, a No. 3 Fantasy RB against the Cowboys.
News:Clinton Portis can take his time coming back from his concussion. "El Boogie" has everything under control. El Boogie? That's a nickname Ladell Betts has had since high school. It's a play on his initials, but he doesn't remember who gave it to him. A flashier running back might have found a way to market it -- maybe a Web site or T-shirts -- but that's not Betts' style. In a way, he's the perfect second fiddle to the flamboyant Portis, choosing to stay in the shadows, waiting for his every-now-and-then chance to make plays. On Wednesday, Betts was in high demand. Portis was seeing a doctor in the city, is unlikely to play again this week against the Cowboys, and may be on the downside of his career after the wear and tear of more 2,000 NFL carries. Betts, meanwhile, was stopped at least four times because of media requests as he made his way to his locker, where another large gathering of cameras and notepads awaited. "I used to be able to walk by without saying a word," Betts said. "But now I've got to speak."
Analysis: The Redskins running game was a mess when Portis went down after a helmet-to-helmet hit in the first quarter at Atlanta a week and a half ago. Since then, it's been an efficient engine. Betts finished the Falcons game and had 70 yards on 15 carries. On Sunday, in his first start since 2006, he played with a sprained ankle and produced 114 yards on 26 carries -- better numbers than Portis has put up in any game since last November -- as the Redskins (3-6) broke a four-game losing streak with a 27-17 win over Denver. Betts is all but certain to get at least one more chance as the starter when Washington visits Dallas this week. "It could be more than one more," offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. "He just needs to keep doing what he's doing. He's doing his job. He's showing 'When you call on me, I'll get it done."' Head coach Jim Zorn said Wednesday that Portis is "very doubtful" for the Dallas game. Consider Betts a No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts reached the 100-yard rushing mark with 114 yards on 26 carries in a win over the Broncos in Week 10. It is only the second time a Redskins back has reached the century mark this season. RB Clinton Portis accomplished it against Kansas City, but it included a 78-yard run. Betts started for the injured Portis. He added one catch for 6 yards. Betts scored on a 1-yard TD run in the 4th quarter.
Analysis: In one and a half games since taking over for Portis, Betts has rushed 41 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns and clearly looks more explosive than Portis did before he got injured. The Redskins play at Dallas in Week 11. Portis hasn't been officially ruled out yet so monitor that situation. Betts would be an injury-replacement option against a Dallas rush defense that has been very good of late but that is only if Portis is out.
News: The NFL Network reports that Redskins RB Ladell Betts will start Sunday against the Broncos despite a sprained ankle. Betts is replacing the injured Clinton Portis (concussion), who was hurt last week and was ruled out. Betts, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2006, missed most of practice this week. Though his ankle is feeling better than it did midweek, he's still not 100 percent, and the team might have to rotate running backs to keep Betts fresh. Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Friday that he could use a running back by committee of Betts, Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther.
Analysis: We like Betts as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB or flex option against the Broncos. Don't plan on using Cartwright or Ganther in any leagues against Denver.
News: Washington RB Clinton Portis (concussion) is inactive for Week 10 against Denver, as expected. Coach Jim Zorn said Portis was home on "doctor's orders." Portis' backup, Ladell Betts, is nursing a sprained ankle but is going to start the game.
Analysis: Hopefully for Fantasy owners Portis won't be out long, but continue to monitor his status heading into Week 11 at Dallas. When healthy, Portis is a No. 2 Fantasy RB. Betts is a low-end No. 2 or "flex" option for this week against the Broncos.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts is questionable for Week 10 against the Broncos after taking limited reps in practice Friday. He did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday as he deals with an ankle injury. And while head coach Jim Zorn said earlier this week that he expected Betts to play, the overriding belief is that Betts will share carries with fellow rushers Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther. "Ladell was limited [in Friday's practice]," Zorn said. "He has two more days to get it going. I suspect he'll play. ... It'll be [running back] by committee, I'm sure unless Ladell feels great. But those guys will play regardless."
Analysis: The bottom line is that none of these running backs are worth using as any more than No. 3 options in Week 10 against the Broncos' good run defense. If you're relying on Betts and need a handcuff in case he misses the game, go with Cartwright as he's been decent in limited reps in the past; Ganther was just re-signed to the roster this week.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts was dressed for practice Thursday but appeared to be limited. He is dealing with an ankle injury heading into Sunday's game against Denver and will be listed as questionable. With Clinton Portis (concussion) ruled out for this game, Betts will start against the Broncos if he's healthy. "Ladell tried to go early, but his ankle bothered him," coach Jim Zorn said. "We decided to hold him out the rest of the way. I suspect he will go Sunday."
Analysis: This is the last thing Fantasy owners want to see is Betts dealing with an injury when he gets the chance for increased playing time. Betts came on for Portis in Week 9 against Atlanta and had 15 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for 23 yards. If he's able to play against the Broncos then consider Betts a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB or a solid flex option.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn says running back Clinton Portis is "very, very doubtful" to play against the Denver Broncos on Sunday because of a concussion. Portis was knocked out of last weekend's 31-17 loss to the Falcons after getting just four carries. Zorn met with Washington's leading rusher at the team's practice facility Wednesday and said Portis "needs to get rest." He said Portis went to see a doctor for tests; it is expected that he'll have to pass a number of exams before being cleared to play again.
Analysis: After Portis got hurt, Ladell Betts carried 15 times for 70 yards -- more than in any game since 2006 -- and scored a touchdown on a fourth-down play from the 1. Betts looks like he'll get the nod for the team's Week 10 game vs. the Broncos while Portis rests. He'd be a No. 3 option and a suitable replacement for those owners who will miss Portis this week.
News: Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said Monday that RB Clinton Portis still has lingering effects from the concussion he suffered against the Falcons in Week 9. Portis apparently doesn't remember the play he got hurt on. "I'd say he's doubtful for this week," Zorn said. "That's just my opinion."
Analysis: Portis had just 4 yards on limited work before getting hurt while Ladell Betts carried 15 times for 70 yards -- more than in any game since 2006 -- and scored a touchdown on a fourth-down play from the 1 in his stead. Betts looks like he'll get the nod for the team's Week 10 game vs. the Broncos while Portis rests. We'll keep you posted on this, but be sure to get a waiver claim in for Betts if you don't already own him. He's a top-end No. 3 RB option if he starts over Portis in Week 10.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis, who left Sunday's game at Atlanta with a concussion, was "knocked out," according to coach Jim Zorn. Zorn said it was too early to say how long Portis might be out, if at all. "He had kind of one of those smiles on his face that you know [he] was wondering what the heck happened," Zorn said. "I would never make a diagnosis on a guy getting knocked out. We just have to wait and see. There'll be some tests to see whether or not there was a concussion and how long it takes." Zorn said the team would be "cautious" about Portis's return, leaving his status for Week 10 against Denver in question.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Portis' status and hope he is OK to face the Broncos. If he can play, he would be considered a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB against Denver. Keep in mind that Eagles RB Brian Westbrook sustained a concussion in Week 8 and has missed two weeks. If Portis can't play against the Broncos then Ladell Betts would get the start. Against the Falcons, Betts carried 15 times for 70 yards -- more than in any game since 2006 -- and scored a touchdown on a fourth-down play from the 1.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts came on for the injured Clinton Portis in the 1st quarter of the Week 9 loss at Atlanta. Betts played almost a full game as the starting running back with Portis out and rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown. Betts scored from 1 yard out in the 3rd quarter. He added one catch for 23 yards.
Analysis: Betts actually looked good as the feature tailback for Washington and showed some explosiveness in place of Portis. He hadn't seen more than four rushing attempts in any other game this season but was used sparingly in the passing game. That might change in Week 10 against Denver if Portis cannot return. Still, Denver possesses the No. 3 rush defense in the NFL and Betts should only be an option if Portis is definitely out and you need a bye-week replacement in deeper leagues.
News: Redskins backup RB Ladell Betts did not get a carry Week 7 on Monday night against the Eagles. He did, however, make three catches for 21 yards.
Analysis: Betts has 15 grabs for 150 yards on the year and has been used much more as a pass catcher than running back of late. This hurts his Fantasy value. He's at best a handcuff to Clinton Portis and should not be owned in most Fantasy leagues at this point. The Redskins are on bye Week 8.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts caught two passes for 11 yards Week 6 in a loss to the Chiefs. He also rushed once for 1 yard.
Analysis: Betts has 12 receptions for 129 yards this season but only 11 carries for 21 yards on the ground. At this point it is obvious that he is too seldom used in the offense to be a worthy Fantasy option Week 7 against the Eagles.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed twice for 7 yards Week 5 in a loss to Carolina. Betts also caught one pass for 6 yards.
Analysis: Betts has 10 catches for 118 yards on the season but only 10 rush attempts for 20 yards. At this point it is obvious that he is too seldom used in the offense to be a worthy Fantasy option Week 6 against the Chiefs.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts saw just one carry behind a less-than-100-percent Clinton Portis in Week 4 against Tampa Bay. Betts carried once for minus-1 yards. He did catch three passes for 21 yards in the Washington win.
Analysis: Betts has made nine catches this season for 112 yards and has been a solid cog in the Redskins porous passing game. He has not, however, done anything on the ground with just 13 yards rushing on eight carries on the year. Betts is not involved in the offense as he has been in recent years and Portis remains relatively healthy. For that, we don't recommend using Betts Week 5 at winless Carolina.
News: Updating a previous report, Redskins RB Clinton Portis did not participate in practice Friday, making it three straight days without work, and is listed as questionable for Sunday vs. the Buccaneers. Ladell Betts and Marcus Mason split first-team reps all week in Portis' place. The starting running back for the Redskins is dealing with ankle injuries. "He's just questionable. That's all. Fifty-fifty," Zorn said after practice. "My struggle is if I put him out there, am I just going to do this over and over again? And I do need to get him well. That's my dilemma. I'm leaning toward playing him because he's a force and he loves to play and he gets himself ready to play."
Analysis: Portis barely practiced last week and still played (albeit not very well) against the Lions. Even if he is active, he cannot be considered a great start since he's banged up, plus the Redskins will probably limit his carries. Fantasy owners should have a contingency plan in place if Portis doesn't start on Sunday -- Ladell Betts would likely see the most work in place of Portis, so he's a decent alternative with Marcus Mason more of a last resort. We'll be first to know whether or not Portis will be active this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed for 2 yards on one carry in Week 3's loss to the Lions. Betts also caught four passes for 43 yards.
Analysis: Betts has been much more valuable to the Redskins this season as a pass catcher with six catches for 91 yards. He's only rushed seven times for 14 yards on the year. Clinton Portis remains healthy, or close to it, but we think Betts will begin to see more carries in Week 4 against Tampa Bay, or else lose them to Marcus Mason. Either way, Betts is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 4 against the Bucs.
News: Redskins RB Clinton Portis sat out practice Friday because of sore ankles, an injury head coach Jim Zorn tabbed as "legit." Portis is listed as questionable for Week 3 at Detroit but Zorn appears confident that Portis will play. "I expect Clinton to be out there ripping around," Zorn said, later adding, "[h]e has a couple little spurs that are irritating him. No swelling, it's just hard for him. He needs to rest them. That is basically what that is."
Analysis: Zorn's comments give us hope that Portis will be OK for Week 3 action, though his reps might be limited in the wake of his injury. Remember, the Redskins will think long-term on Portis and won't want to run him into the ground in a game they might be able to scrape by in without him. If you own Portis and are counting on him for this week, your best move is to add Ladell Betts to your bench just in case Portis rests, and Marcus Mason is a decent flier off the waiver wire too since he could see some action if Portis is inactive. We'll be first to know whether or not Portis will be active this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed four times for 13 yards in Week 2's win over the Rams. Betts also caught one pass for 25 yards in the biggest pass play of the game for Washington. Betts was the third RB off the bench behind Marcus Mason. Mason rushed three times for 5 yards in the game. It was his first carries as a professional.
Analysis: Betts is not a major part of the offense for Washington and it looks like he'll lose out on backup carries to Mason now. Both players are worthless until Clinton Portis gets hurt. Keep them on your bench or waivers for Week 3 against the Lions in Detroit.
News: Redskins backup RB Ladell Betts carried the ball only two times for minus-1 yard against the Giants in Week 1. He did, however, pick up 23 yards on a reception.
Analysis: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Betts would get more work this year in relief of Portis, but it didn't show in the first game. Betts' main Fantasy appeal remains as a handcuff option to Portis, but he could be a nice add off the waiver wire later in the year. He has a nice matchup against the Rams in Week 2, so if the Redskins build up a big lead, you never know.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Thursday he expects to use RB Ladell Betts quite a bit this season to give Clinton Portis some rest. "I know that I need to be very conscientious about how much I use Clinton because I have to have Clinton the whole year," Zorn said. "Ladell is a very capable running back that could start in situations around this league, and we look forward to having him accent what we are doing on offense."
Analysis: Betts could be worth a late-round pick in seasonal leagues as a reserve RB in deep formats. He's a good handcuff option for Portis also if you take Portis with a high draft pick.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts was underwhelming in a starting chance on Thursday in the team's first preseason game against the Ravens. He had four carries for seven yards and one catch for 12.
Analysis: Betts is expected to be more of a factor in the Redskins' offense this season but will by no means take away from Clinton Portis' production. Look for Betts to be a solid handcuff for Portis this season. He is a player worth picking up in the later rounds on Draft Day.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis could be losing some carries to Ladell Betts this season. The report states: "There may very well be more room for Betts to make an impact this season. At the very least, Betts is expected to get more carries as the team looks to lessen the strain on Portis and keep the workhorse healthy. That was the plan last season before Betts's injuries kept him from factoring in heavily, so don't be surprised if he is much more involved in 2009."
Analysis: Now, we don't expect Portis to decline in production, and a few less carries could help him overall for the season, but we also don't want to see Portis standing on the sideline for long stretches. This should tell you to add Betts with a late-round pick in all leagues as a handcuff option for Portis, who remains a No. 1 option worth a pick at the end of Round 1 in all leagues.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins offensive coordinator Sherman Smith said during offseason workouts, backup RB Ladell Betts has made an impression. "The guy that's been standing out to me is Ladell Betts," Smith said of the running back who serves as Clinton Portis's backup. "To me, he's stepped his game up. He's preparing like he's a starter. He's taken a leadership role, which I'm not saying he wasn't a leader before, but I just think he's a very good player. He's jumped out to me."
Analysis: This is a good sign for Betts, who could get a chance to play this year if Portis suffers an injury. Betts is a good handcuff option for Portis and is worth a late-round pick in all formats.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts finished his season with one carry for six yards and two catches for seven more in a loss to the 49ers in Week 17.
Analysis: Betts spent most of the season as a handcuff for Clinton Portis and finished with 61 carries for 206 yards and a touchdown. He was also a nice part of the passing game, mostly because the Redskins threw more to tight ends and backs than wide receivers. Betts will head into 2009 as still just a handcuff to Portis, however, and should only be drafted in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts carried seven times for 23 yards in Week 16's win over the Eagles. Betts also caught five passes for 43 yards to lead the Redskins in receiving.
Analysis: The fact that Betts led Washington in receiving is more a testament to how poorly the offense has played in recent weeks despite the win on Sunday. Betts still has a total of 44 yards on the ground over his last six games and is absolutely useless in Fantasy right now unless Clinton Portis gets hurt. The Redskins will be vying for a win in Week 17 at San Francisco and that means you should not have Betts active in any leagues.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts ran just twice in Week 15's loss to the Bengals for seven yards.
Analysis: Betts has a total of 21 yards on the ground over his last five games and is absolutely useless in Fantasy right now unless Clinton Portis gets hurt. Since that didn't happen in Week 15 against Cincinnati, you can forget about using Betts in Week 16 against Philadelphia.
News: In the Redskins' 24-10 loss at the Ravens in Week 14, RB Ladell Betts saw playing time mainly in the second half due to falling behind and wound up leading his team in receiving yards with 57 yards on three catches. Betts also had 3 rush yards on six carries.
Analysis: Betts saw extended playing time as the Redskins pulled Clinton Portis in the second half. Truthfully, his only Fantasy role serves as an insurance policy for those owners who have Portis and rely on him each week. He's not worth owning otherwise. The Redskins play at the Bengals in Week 15.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts caught four passes for 22 yards in Week 13's loss to the Giants. Betts also rushed once for three yards. Betts was backing up Clinton Portis, who was limited to 22 yards on the ground, as the Giants defensive line stopped Washington's running game.
Analysis: Betts did little for Washington even with Portis struggling in Week 13. As long as Portis is getting the bulk of the carries, Betts can be left on the bench or on waivers. That goes double in Week 14 as the Redskins play the Ravens in Baltimore.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed five times for seven yards and a touchdown in Week 12's win over Seattle. Betts scored on a 1-yard run in the 1st quarter after Clinton Portis left the game for a quick injury break. Late in the game, the Redskins were driving to run down the clock and Betts fumbled to give the Seahawks a chance that they would not capitalize on.
Analysis: Betts almost cost the Redskins the game. He scored the touchdown but did little else for Washington with Portis playing well. He remains only viable in Fantasy as a handcuff to Portis heading into Week 13 against the Giants.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts (knee) is listed as probable for Week 12 at Seattle. He returned to action Week 11 against the Cowboys after missing three games with the knee injury. Betts had just one carry for one yard and 27 receiving yards.
Analysis: RB Clinton Portis is once again a game-time decision with a knee injury Week 12, but he is expected to start. In some instance he is inactive, then Betts becomes a decent stopgap Fantasy option. Continue to track the news up until inactives.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts, who returned Week 11 after missing three games with a knee injury, was on the practice report with the same injury Wednesday and Thursday as the team prepares for Week 12 at Seattle. He had limited participation in practice.
Analysis: Betts will likely play at Seattle, but he'll likely serve as a backup to Clinton Portis, who's dealing with a knee injury of his own. Portis managed to play last week, but if he can't go for some reason this week, Betts would likely take his place. Still, think of Betts as nothing more than a handcuff option for now.
News: In the Redskins' 14-10 loss vs. the Cowboys in Week 11, RB Ladell Betts had 1 rush yard on one carry and 27 receiving yards on two catches. He didn't see much playing time in place of starter Clinton Portis, who did get 15 carries for 68 yards with two catches for 6 yards. Betts left the game in the second half with what appeared to be a leg injury when he limped off the field.
Analysis: Betts is only worth owning as an insurance policy for those owners relying on Portis this season. Do not consider him a worthwhile Fantasy player otherwise unless you want to lean on a player who might get you 30 total yards. The Redskins play at the Seahawks in Week 12.
News: Redskins RB Clinton Portis is active and starting according to the team for Sunday's game against Dallas. He will play despite the knee injury, but coach Jim Zorn said he will be limited. Ladell Betts is also active for the Redskins.
Analysis: Portis will get his share of touches, but plan on Betts to get the majority of carries since he's healthier than Portis at this time. Shaun Alexander will also get reps, which means the Redskins RB situation is a mess against Dallas.
News: The NFL Network is reporting Sunday that Redskins RB Clinton Portis, who is listed as questionable with a knee injury, will test his knee in pre-game warmups and decide then whether he can play against Dallas. If Portis can't go, Ladell Betts will start at running back with Shaun Alexander also getting carries.
Analysis: It sounds like Portis will do everything he can to play, but the safe bet is to keep him reserved in Week 11 since he could be out or limited against the Cowboys. Betts would be the likely replacement, but expect him to share carries with Alexander. If you can avoid using a Washington RB this week, that would be the safe route for Week 11.
News: Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis did not practice again Friday and will be used only "in a limited fashion" if he is able to play Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL's second-leading rusher was able to watch practice -- unlike Wednesday and Thursday, when his sprained left knee kept him away from the field -- and was "getting some mental reps in case he has a chance to go," according to coach Jim Zorn. Portis sprained the knee in the 23-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers before last week's bye. He is questionable on the injury report. "I would use him, if he could go, in a limited fashion," Zorn said. Portis' backup, Ladell Betts, is probable after missing three games with a sprained knee. Betts was limited in practice Friday. "We're just trying to get his knee ready," Zorn said. "It was sore a little bit today because of the work he put in yesterday." If neither Portis nor Betts can play, midseason signing and former league MVP Shaun Alexander would make his first Redskins start.
Analysis: Betts has shown in the past to be a viable option when Portis has been out of the lineup, but the fact he has been out several weeks with a knee injury means he could be a little rusty returning to the lineup. Expect Betts and Alexander to do much of the work Week 11, but consider using other alternatives at this time. Betts and Alexander are more desperation Fantasy options.
News:Clinton Portis' sprained knee showed no improvement Thursday, and the Washington Redskins RB appears unlikely to play in Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL's second-leading rusher left Redskins Park during practice, wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt and burgundy sweat pants as he stepped into his Maserati. "I was hoping today that there would be a little more optimism, and there's not," coach Jim Zorn said. "He's still questionable. I would say there's no change today. I was looking for another jump, but there wasn't." Portis sprained his left knee in the 23-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers before last week's bye. With Portis ailing, Ladell Betts appears set to start Sunday. Betts has missed the last three games with a sprained knee, but he was on the field in steady rain for Thursday's practice. "Betts looked good," Zorn said. "He's got a brace on, but made some cuts. That was encouraging." Shaun Alexander would start if both Portis and Betts are unable to play.
Analysis: This is a new development if Betts could return to the field and start if Portis is out. Plan on adding Betts in all leagues at this time in case he does start. If you own Portis, picking up Betts is a must heading into Week 11.
News: The Washington Times reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis revealed Tuesday he sustained a second-degree sprain of his MCL in his right knee against the Steelers. Portis did not practice Monday, and coach Jim Zorn listed him as "questionable" and "50-50" for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. A grade 2 sprain of the MCL is an incomplete tear of one of the knee's four major ligaments and could require a recovery time of three to four weeks. Reserve RB Ladell Betts sustained a sprained MCL (though which degree wasn't documented) in the Redskins' loss to St. Louis on Oct. 12 and has yet to return to practice. If Portis and Betts can't play, Shaun Alexander and Rock Cartwright would assume the RB duties. Alexander has 10 carries in three games since joining the Redskins after Betts' injury, and Cartwright has four rushes.
Analysis: Betts averaged around 18 snaps and six carries in six games before his injury. "I'm getting close," he said Monday. Said Zorn: "He had a great workout (Monday). We'll try to inject him into some portions of practice Wednesday. ... I can't say I expect (Betts to play). He'll tell us verbally and by the way we watch him move whether he's ready to go." It sounds like Betts won't be able to backup Portis or possibly start if Portis is out. For now, don't plan on using Betts in Week 11 against Dallas.
News: The Redskins listed QB Colt Brennan, WR Malcolm Kelly, DB Shawn Springs, RB Ladell Betts and Rob Jackson among their inactives for Week 9 against the Steelers.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to matter in Fantasy even when healthy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts (knee), WR Malcolm Kelly (knee) and DB Shawn Springs (calf) have all been ruled out for Week 9 vs. Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Betts only has increased Fantasy value when Clinton Portis is sidelined. Springs is a starter for Washington, but not a big stats guy and has limited Fantasy appeal. Kelly has been injured all season and should only be owned in the deepest of long-term keeper leagues. Continue to keep these players reserved Week 9.
News: Washington will be without backup RB Ladell Betts in Week 8 at Detroit. The Redskins listed the following players as also being inactive this week: QB Colt Brennan (3rd QB), DB Shawn Springs, DB Chris Horton, WR Malcolm Kelly and DL Cornelius Griffin.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and remains out in Week 8 against the Lions. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis, anyway. The rest of these guys have little Fantasy value. Horton was coming on in his rookie season and was gaining value but isn't really recommended just yet.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts couldn't practice Wednesday for the Redskins and is officially out for Week 8 at Detroit with a knee injury.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and remains out in Week 8 against the Lions. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis, anyway.
News: The Redskins have listed the following players as being inactive for Week 7 against the Browns: RB Ladell Betts, QB Colt Brennan (3rd QB), WR Malcolm Kelly, DB Shawn Springs, DL Erasmus James and DL Rob Jackson.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and might miss this and the next week with the injury. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis, anyway. The rest of these guys are not viable Fantasy options at this time.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts did not practice on Wednesday and is officially out for Week 7 against Cleveland.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and might miss this and the next week with the injury. Washington brought in Shaun Alexander to back up Clinton Portis in Betts' absence. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis. He's not worth starting on a regular basis.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins backup RB Ladell Betts might miss up to two weeks with a knee injury suffered vs. St. Louis in Week 6. The club is scheduled to bring in veteran rusher Shaun Alexander for a tryout to take Betts' roster spot while he's sidelined.
Analysis: Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis. He's not worth starting on a regular basis. We'll keep you posted on his news.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts touched the ball nine times in Sunday's loss to the Rams for a total of 50 yards.
Analysis: Betts was used slightly more frequently in Week 6, however, he was still just a backup and spell back for Clinton Portis. He's got the talent and ability to put up big numbers but the 'Skins just don't have the room to spare. Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 7 against the Browns.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts picked up big chunks of yardage late in the game on Sunday in Week 5 against the Eagles that helped the Redskins pull out the win on the road. Betts rushed nine times for 44 yards with a long of 14. Betts also caught one pass for seven yards.
Analysis: Betts was used slightly more frequently in Week 6, however, he was still just a backup and spell back for Clinton Portis. He's got the talent and ability to put up big numbers but the 'Skins just don't have the room to spare. Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 6 against the Rams.
News: Washington backup running back Ladell Betts ran the ball 11 times for 32 yards on Sunday in Week 4's win over Dallas.
Analysis: The Redskins look to be using Betts less and less in the running game for some reason. He's being limited and now looks to be only an option in Fantasy when and if Clinton Portis goes out with an injury. He's got the talent and ability to put up big numbers but the 'Skins just don't have the room to spare. Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 5 at Philadelphia.
News: Washington backup RB Ladell Betts rushed just four times for 23 yards in Sunday's Week 3 game hosting Arizona.
Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 4 against Dallas.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts rushed the ball six times on Sunday against the Saints for a total of 25 yards. Betts also caught two passes for 8 yards.
Analysis: Betts will never figure much into the Redskins offense as long as Clinton Portis is healthy and performing. He's got the talent and ability to put up big numbers but the 'Skins just don't have the room to spare. Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 3 vs. the Cardinals.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts failed to gain a yard on his lone carry Week 1 against the Giants. He did have one reception for 11 yards, but Betts finished the 16-7 loss with a 21-yard catch-and-run. However, that gain was taken off the board thanks to a holding call.
Analysis: One thing we learned Week 1: As long as Clinton Portis, who had 23 carries, is healthy, Betts will see limited touches in Jim Zorn's offense. Betts remains just a handcuff Fantasy option for Portis owners heading into Week 2 against the Saints. He can be a desperation flex option in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: Washington backup RB Ladell Betts rushed seven times for 17 yards and also fumbled against the Panthers on Saturday. It was a poor performance following leaving the game with a knee injury in the 'Skins last preseason contest.
Analysis: Although he's just the 'Skins change of pace back, he's vital to their offense and should see a lot of action in the passing game this season. He's one of the better backup RBs in the NFL. Think late-round pick with Betts in Fantasy drafts as insurance for the oft-injured Clinton Portis.
News:Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said Sunday that RB Ladell Betts escaped a serious knee injury. He was injured during Saturday's preseason game against the Jets. "I thought he did something worse than he did, but he said he just landed on it and kind of got his leg up underneath his knee," Zorn said. "He is going to be fine. He may be sore this week. I do not know what his status will be (for Saturday's preseason game at Carolina). As he works through the week, if his knee is stiff because of how he hit it then I will hold him out. It is not that serious."
Analysis: Well, the good news is that Betts dodged a potentially season-ending injury. Although he's just the 'Skins change of pace back, he's vital to their offense and should see a lot of action in the passing game this season. He's one of the better backup RBs in the NFL. Think late-round pick with Betts in Fantasy drafts as insurance for the oft-injured Clinton Portis.
News: Washington backup running back Ladell Betts, who started Saturday's preseason game against the Jets and rushed the ball six times for 34 yards -- he looked pretty good and had some nice speed bursts -- was forced to leave after seemingly tweaking his knee. Trainers came onto the field to attend to Betts but he was eventually able to walk off the field on his own.
Analysis: It didn't look good, but it appears that Betts may have avoided a lengthy injury. Although he's just the 'Skins change of pace back, he's vital to their offense and should see a lot of action in the passing game this season. He's one of the better backup RBs in the NFL and the Redskins hope he won't miss too much -- if any -- time. Think late-round pick with Betts in Fantasy drafts as insurance for the oft-injured Clinton Portis.

News: Washington backup RB Ladell Betts shined in Saturday's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Coming in after Clinton Portis, Betts rushed for 41 yards on five carries to lead the team. He also caught three passes for another 41 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: The fact that the Redskins used Betts a good amount in the passing game, including the touchdown, is great for his Fantasy value. Betts is expected to continue aiding Portis with the Redskins' run game in 2008 but not get to the point of splitting reps 50-50 or anything like that. What helps his cause is the team's offensive philosophy change to a West Coast Offense, but so long as Portis is upright, Betts' best Fantasy role will be as insurance for the Redskins stud rusher. Think late-round pick with Betts.
News: Speaking with the media on Thursday, Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said that he envisions using Ladell Betts quite a bit on offense, including in a set with starter Clinton Portis. "I see him playing a lot," Zorn said of Betts. "I see him complimenting what Clinton does. I see us even having the opportunity to use both Clinton and Ladell at times. I look at Ladell and Clinton as good zone runners and excellent pass blockers. They do a really nice job in pass patterns."
Analysis: We've heard this one before.
News: Expected to take on a larger role with the Redskins in 2007, RB Ladell Betts only had 335 rush yards on 93 carries (3.6 avg.) with a touchdown and 174 receiving yards on 21 catches with a TD catch. Betts also had one fumble.
Analysis: Betts is expected to continue aiding Portis with the Redskins' run game in 2008. What helps his cause is the team's offensive philosophy change to a West Coast Offense, but so long as Portis is upright, Betts' best Fantasy role will be as insurance for the Redskins stud rusher. Think late-round pick with Betts.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts ran 10 times for 29 yards Week 17 against the Cowboys, finishing 2007 without a single 100-yard game.
Analysis: After rushing for 1,154 yards in 2006, Betts clearly became Clinton Portis' backup again in 2007. As such, he shouldn't factor in the playoffs and will only get drafted as injury insurance in 2008.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed five times for 21 yards during a Week 16 win against the Vikings. He now has 13 carries for 50 yards and one touchdown in his last two games. He also had one catch for four yards against the Vikings.
Analysis: Betts has seen a lot of action in December, but since Clinton Portis is healthy, he is just not seeing the necessary stats to matter in Fantasy play. He is nothing more than a desperation 'flex' option Week 17 against the Cowboys.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts scored his first rushing touchdown of the season during a Week 15 win against the Giants. Betts, the backup to Clinton Portis, rushed eight times for 29 yards and scored on a 14-yard scamper in the second quarter. He ran over a handful of Giants as he barreled into the end zone. He also had one reception for eight yards.
Analysis: Betts now has two touchdowns in his last two games after being held out of the end zone in his first 13. The Redskins are working him into the offense as a change-of-pace back, but he is still far too unreliable to trust in Fantasy leagues heading into Week 16 against the Vikings.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts helped end a four-game losing streak for Washington Week 14 against the Bears. Betts' 16-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter sealed a 24-16 win. He finished with four catches for 26 yards. He also had three rushes for minus-3 yards.
Analysis: Betts saw some extra plays Week 14 as Clinton Portis was fighting a stomach ailment, but he just hasn't been needed all that much in 2007 because Portis has been healthy for the most part. He has been held to three or fewer rushes in seven games. Betts remains nothing more than a desperation 'flex' option or Fantasy insurance for Portis owners heading into Week 15 against the Giants.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts did not have any carries in Week 13 vs. Buffalo. He did catch two passes for 14 yards, however.
Analysis: Betts saw 25 carries go to starter Clinton Portis and no other running back carried the ball. It doesn't appear the Redskins are looking to use Betts as a regular option in the offense and for that reason he should be left reserved until further notice.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts ran eight times for 47 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards in Washington's 19-13 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 12.
Analysis: Betts filled in very nicely for Clinton Portis and showed us a glimpse of why he's owned in 47 percent of leagues, despite not being a starter. Ignore him in Week 13 when Washington hosts Buffalo unless Portis somehow can't play.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts (illness) is listed as probable for Week 12 at Tampa Bay. Betts went through full practices Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday. Betts, the Redskins' backup running back, has yet to record a touchdown this season.
Analysis: Clinton Portis has managed to stay healthy and that has rendered Betts almost useless in Fantasy leagues at this juncture. He remains Fantasy insurance for Portis owners. Keep Betts out of active Fantasy lineups Week 12.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had two rushes for eight yards in Week 11 at Dallas. He also had a catch for six yards.
Analysis: Betts was not a major part of the offensive game plan, especially considering the team abandoned the running game early in the second half. Starter Clinton Portis had just 12 carries in the game. Betts has not been seeing enough touches in the offense to be useful in Fantasy play for Week 12 at Tampa Bay.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had a 5-yard run vs. Philadelphia in Week 10. He also had a fumble lost.
Analysis: It is clear that Betts has lost his share of the Redskins' carries to Portis. Betts' best value Fantasywise is as an insurance policy for Clinton Portis. Otherwise, he's really not worth using. The Redskins play at Dallas in Week 11.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed nine times for 64 yards in Week 9 at the N.Y. Jets.
Analysis: Betts saw just nine rushes in a game in which Clinton Portis carried the ball 36 times. He's clearly the No. 2 running back in Washington after virtually splitting the carries last season. As a result, his Fantasy appeal has lessened to the point where he's only useful as a No. 3 running back option for Week 10 vs. Philadelphia.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts only had three carries for 9 yards at New England in Week 8.
Analysis: Betts continues to lose carries to Portis after earning a timeshare situation with him last season. At this point, Betts' Fantasy role is as a backup to Portis in all leagues. Do not consider him a reliable option, even as a No. 3 RB, going forward. Washington plays at the Jets in Week 9, but Betts isn't playing well enough to use.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts carried three times for 12 yards during a Week 7 win over the Cardinals. He has now carried just six times for 22 yards in the last two games.
Analysis: Betts' production continues to drop every week as long as Clinton Portis remains healthy. He is still worth owning in most Fantasy leagues as insurance for Portis' owners, but don't expect a lot of production until the Redskins start working him more into the offensive scheme. Washington travels to New England in Week 8.
News: We're six weeks into the season, and Ladell Betts has yet to live up to expectations. The Redskins' No. 2 RB has no touchdowns, one 20-yard reception, zero 20-yard rushes and is averaging a gross 2.8 yards per carry. He has only two games with at least 10 total touches. However, Betts is still a low-end candidate to start in Fantasy play this week because the Cardinals come to FedEx Field, and they've been shoddy against the run over their last two games. With the Redskins expected to build a lead and sustain it by running the ball, Betts could get as many as 15 touches.
Analysis: Betts is a decent low-end No. 3/top-end No. 4 Fantasy RB for Week 7 action. Ultimately, his Fantasy role continues to be as an insurance policy for Clinton Portis, so don't start him unless your other options are bad.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had three carries for 10 yards and three catches for 21 yards Sunday against Green Bay.
Analysis: Betts is only worth starting in Fantasy leagues if Clinton Portis gets hurt. He is not getting enough carries right now to be successful. Consider Betts a No. 3 Fantasy RB in Week 7 against Arizona.
News: With Clinton Portis apparently back to almost full health, Redskins RB Ladell Betts will be left to pick up the scraps again in Week 6 as Washington head to Green Bay. The Packers rank 14th in the league in rushing yards allowed.
Analysis: Betts might get a few carries Sunday -- especially down by the goal line -- but Betts is only worth using as a Fantasy RB in especially dire situations. Consider him a low-end No. 3 in all Fantasy formats.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts had eight carries for 22 yards and two catches for 8 yards Sunday against Detroit.
Analysis: Betts is a No. 3 Fantasy RB and should only be used in Week 6 at Green Bay if Portis is out or in deep leagues if you need a RB with your starter on a bye.
News: The Washington Post reports that the Redskins clarified the status of Clinton Portis' right knee on Tuesday, confirming that he had a grade-1 sprain, not a recurrence of tendinitis. Portis appeared on a radio show later in the day and said he's been receiving treatment and wearing a sleeve to reduce the swelling. Both he and Redskins trainer Bubba Tyer expect Portis to play on Sunday vs. the Lions.
Analysis: If Portis were to miss the game, Ladell Betts would be huge against a suspect Lions defense. At this point, expect Portis and Betts to split 50-50 in Week 5 against Detroit, making Portis a No. 2 Fantasy option and Betts a useful No. 3.
News: Redskins RB Clinton Portis is adjusting to sharing the rushing load with Ladell Betts. Although Portis has more carries this year (48 to Betts' 30), coach Joe Gibbs made it clear that he counts the two as equals. "We think they're interchangeable," Gibbs said. So far, the results are mixed. Portis' numbers are OK but not great: 227 yards, a 4.7-yard average and three touchdowns. Betts (82 yards, 2.7 average) didn't have a second-half carry last week until the two at the end of the game against the Giants when he was stuffed at the goal line. He said the tag-team approach means he doesn't have "the same type of rhythm" he had when Portis was injured last year.
Analysis: Both Portis and Betts are on a bye in Week 4. They return in Week 5 against Detroit, and Portis is a No. 2 Fantasy RB, with Betts a No. 3 option.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had a long gain of 13 yards Week 3 against the Giants, but finished the game with just nine yards on seven carries. He had one reception for 13 yards.
Analysis: The Redskins are finding a few carries a game for Betts, but unless something long-term happens to Clinton Portis, Betts is nothing more than a 'flex' option or Fantasy insurance for Portis' owners. The Redskins are off in Week 4 and return to action Week 5 against the Lions.
News: Ladell Betts carried six times for just 14 yards in Week 2 at Philadelphia. He was able to finish with two receptions for 26 yards.
Analysis: The total of 40 yards is just not going to get it done for Fantasy owners. Most have him as insurance for when, not if, Clinton Portis has another injury crop up. He is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy running back or 'flex' player heading into Week 3 against the Giants.
News: Ladell Betts upended a lot of teams late last season, but only one got trampled twice. That team was the Philadelphia Eagles, Betts' Week 2 opponent. Last November, Betts had 83 yards on 20 carries after replacing an injured Clinton Portis. He followed that up with his best rushing game as a pro: A 171-yard effort at home against the Eagles. Of course, he didn't split carries in that second game, something he'll be doing in Week 2.
Analysis: Betts may get a few less carries this week as Portis continues to prove himself recovered from his knee injury. The bigger back, Betts might get some looks at the goal line, but isn't worth starting except in the deeper leagues.
News: Washington RB Ladell Betts totaled 59 rushes on 17 carries while splitting time with Clinton Portis during the Redskins' Week 1 OT victory over the Dolphins. He also had one catch for 16 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Betts is owned in 93 percent of leagues, so it's clear a lot of people have faith that Betts will get his fair share of Fantasy points this season, despite the fact he will be sharing time with Portis. Both are definitely worth a look at as No. 3 RBs for their Week 2 matchup at Philadelphia.
News: Coach Joe Gibbs said Clinton Portis will start Sunday vs. Miami, with Ladell Betts also getting plenty of work. Betts ran for a career-high 1,154 yards last year and led the NFC with 666 yards in December, mostly after Portis went on injured reserve. Betts was also rewarded with a contract extension. Therefore, the inevitable questions this year concern whether there can be enough carries for both Portis and Betts, and whether Betts' production means this could be it for Portis if he doesn't have a good year. Portis is also tiring of questions about sharing the workload about Betts. "People fail to realize all my career I've been in this position," Portis said. "In college I was sharing the load with James Jackson, Najeh Davenport, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore. It wasn't just me. In the NFL, I shared the load with Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary, Reuben Droughns. ... Me and Ladell are going to coexist. We're going to have fun."
Analysis: Betts would only be recommended for Fantasy use as a low-end No. 3 RB pick in deeper leagues. We expect him to get around 10 carries and maybe some goal-line reps, but they'll be against a tough, fresh Miami run defense. And, of course, he'll be behind Portis with the first team.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed 14 times for 29 yards in the preseason. He also caught one pass for two yards.
Analysis: Betts was ugly this preseason in limited action. If you spend a late second- or early third-round pick on Clinton Portis in drafts this year, though, make sure you spend a pick in Round 5 through 7 on Betts, since he'll likely see more playing time anyway with Portis dinged. If Portis were to miss significant playing time, Betts would see all the reps in Washington, and he proved last season that he can handle such a load easily.
News: Washington's Ladell Betts, getting the starting nod because of Clinton Portis' knee injury, ran six times for 12 yards vs. Pittsburgh in Washington's second preseason game. He had no receptions.
Analysis: Betts has been ugly this preseason in limited action. If you spend a late second- or early third-round pick on Clinton Portis in drafts this year, make sure you spend a pick in Round 5 through 7 on Betts, since he'll likely see more playing time anyway with Portis dinged. If Portis were to miss significant playing time, Betts would see all the reps in Washington, and he proved last season that he can handle such a load easily. Keep an eye on new developments in Washington's backfield.
News: A swollen knee has also slowed Redskins running back Clinton Portis, who has been out for more than two weeks. Portis is not expected to play vs. Pittsburgh on Saturday, leaving Ladell Betts to get the bulk of the carries with the starters.
Analysis: If you spend a late second- or early third-round pick on Clinton Portis in drafts this year, make sure you spend a pick in Round 6 or 7 on Ladell Betts, since he'll likely see more playing time anyway with Portis dinged. If Portis were to miss significant playing time, Betts would see all the reps in Washington, and he proved last season that he can handle such a load easily. Keep an eye on Washington's backfield in the coming weeks.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts (neck) was able to play during Saturday's preseason game against the Titans. He had four carries for six yards. His longest gain of the night went for seven yards.
Keep an eye on developments in Washington's backfield.
News: The Redskins won't have all the pieces available Saturday night during a preseason game against the Titans. Running back Clinton Portis isn't expected to play as he deals with tendinitis in his knee, and backup Ladell Betts is recovering from a neck stinger.
Analysis: If you spend a late second- or early third-round pick on Portis in drafts this year, make sure you spend a pick in Round 6 or 7 on Ladell Betts, since he'll likely see more playing time anyway with Portis dinged. If Portis were to miss significant playing time, Betts would see all the reps in Washington, and he proved last season that he can handle such a load easily. Keep an eye on developments in Washington's backfield.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins RB Clinton Portis was sidelined in camp Tuesday with tendinitis in his right knee after aggravating it in camp on Monday. The same ailment cost him time in an offseason minicamp in June. Coach Joe Gibbs called Portis day-to-day and gave no timetable for his return. Portis left Redskins Park with a sizable wrap over his knee
Analysis: The last 12 months have not been kind to Portis. Last preseason, he separated his shoulder making a tackle in a preseason game, then broke his right hand last November and was diagnosed with patella tendinitis in May of this year. Suffice to say, Portis is a legit injury risk in 2007 even though the Redskins told Sports Illustrated that he is their starter so long as he is healthy. If you spend a late second- or early third-round pick on Portis in drafts this year, make sure you spend a pick in Round 6 or 7 on Ladell Betts, since he'll likely see more playing time anyway with Portis dinged. If Portis were to miss significant playing time, Betts would see all the reps in Washington, and he proved last season that he can handle such a load easily. Keep an eye on developments in Washington's backfield.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts told CBS SportsLine.com that nothing has been told to him directly about his role in 2007, but he's heard and read that his playing time will be similar to what it was when both he and Clinton Portis were healthy last season. "It'll be Clinton's show -- he's the No. 1 guy -- and when he's tired or we're trying to get a change of pace or whatever the situation may be, I'll spell him and get my touches as well," Betts said. Earlier this offseason, coach Joe Gibbs said he expects more "balance" between Portis and Betts.
Analysis: So is this a running back tandem or isn't it? From the looks of things, Portis will still get the lion's share of carries, but Betts will see more playing time than he ever has before. Remember, the Redskins gave Betts a nice contract extension late last season, so they're not likely to be happy with him getting five touches per game. Continue to view Portis as a quality No. 2 Fantasy RB worth a pick between 13th and 19th overall, while Betts is a top-40 Fantasy RB worthy of being a bye-week replacement or a low-end No. 3 option in deeper leagues until he finds more consistent playing time.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is planning on keeping Clinton Portis as the starting rusher for his team, but will use Ladell Betts more often. Betts took over for Portis last year when Portis got hurt and ran extremely well. "I think the load will probably be a little bit more balanced between the two," Gibbs said. "They really like each other, which is good. Clinton loves football, is one of the smarter football guys I've been around. He understands. He wants to win. He'll come right out of there and tell Ladell, 'Hey, get in there.' A lot of times it will kind of be in his hands but certainly down the stretch I don't know if anyone played much better than Ladell did."
Analysis: The twosome only played in eight games together last year, with Portis having significantly more touches than Betts in four of them. Expect a split along the lines of 65/35 in Portis' favor, making him the more attractive option in Fantasy Football, worth a second-round pick. Betts is a terrific bye-week replacement, decent No. 3 RB in deeper leagues, and insurance policy for Portis, so consider him with a pick between Rounds 6 and 8. Don't rule out one of them getting traded this offseason despite their long-term contract status with the Redskins.
News: The Washington Post reports that the Redskins are after Broncos CB Dre Bly even though he was traded once this season already. As part of a package deal for Bly, the Broncos have asked for RB Ladell Betts, but coach Joe Gibbs wants to keep him in Washington. He has plans to use him and Clinton Portis to form Washington's running game in 2007.
Analysis: Betts could be good for 10-to-15 carries per game next season, something he didn't have when Portis was the every-down back for Washington. Consider Betts a must-own reserve Fantasy RB, worth a middle- to late-round pick in drafts -- especially by those owners who spend a top-20 pick on Portis.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had a career year thanks to starting nine games in place of Clinton Portis, who suffered shoulder and hand injuries during the year. Betts rumbled for a career-best 1,154 yards and four touchdowns, adding 445 receiving yards with a touchdown. By comparison, his numbers were on par with Warrick Dunn and Ahman Green but didn't get as much playing time. Moreover, Betts totaled over 100 rush yards in five of his last six starts and ended with six "century games" on the year.
Analysis: Betts re-signed with the Redskins during the season and is expected to backup Portis and also get a handful of reps every week. That's surprising considering how well he did this year, but if that's what his job will entail, his Fantasy value will reflect it. Assume Portis comes back healthy in 2007, making Betts a middle- to late-round choice as either a reserve RB or as a solid backup to Portis.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had 20 carries for 92 yards in a Week 17 loss to the Giants. He also had six catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Betts totaled more than 1,500 all-purpose yards in 2006 and really provided a spark for the Redskins when starter Clinton Portis was out with injury. The team has already re-signed him for next season, but just as insurance in case Portis once again goes down with injury. He might be a nice 'flex' option in 2007, but that is debateable moving forward.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had 29 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns against the Rams. He also had two catches for 35 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Consider Betts a No. 1 option for Week 17 against the Giants.
News: The Redskins have gained 691 yards on the ground in the past four games, with RB Ladell Betts accounting for 549 yards. Factored over 16 games, Betts would be on pace to gain 2,192 yards this season. However, Betts is the backup, playing only because Clinton Portis is out with shoulder and hand injuries. Betts has gained 933 yards this season.
Analysis: Consider Betts a No. 1 option for Week 16 against the Rams.
News: The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is confident that both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts will have roles in the Washington offense in 2007. "We feel great about those two guys carrying the ball for us," Gibbs said. "They've been great partners in the past. ... And certainly Clinton's our guy. He's rushed for a ton of yards for us and Ladell has a huge role for us and certainly there's room for having two good running backs and Ladell can also do a lot of other things for us. He's a heck of a receiver coming out of the backfield. He has been extremely aggressive. He's got some goals for himself in there, and I think it's showed up. He's made a real statement about himself and what he can do, and certainly that affects you as a coach."
Analysis: Next year, look for Portis to give some reps up to Betts but still be the primary ball carrier for Washington. As for this week at St. Louis, consider Betts a low-end No. 1 Fantasy RB as the Rams run defense has been porous over the last three months.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed 22 times for 119 yards in Week 15 at New Orleans. He also caught three passes for 43 yards, but did not score a touchdown in the game.
Analysis: Betts has established himself as a legit Fantasy option since Clinton Portis went down earlier in the season. Use him as a No. 2 RB in Week 16 at St. Louis.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed 33 times for 171 yards in Week 14 vs. Philadelphia. He also caught two passes for 14 yards, but did not score a touchdown.
Analysis: Even without a score, Betts had an outstanding game against a poor Redskins rush defense. He can be considered a nice No. 2 option for Week 15 at New Orleans.
News: Running back Ladell Betts signed a contract extension with the Washington Redskins on Friday, opting to remain in Clinton Portis' shadow rather than test free-agency after a career-best season. Betts, getting a regular chance to start while Portis is on injured reserve, has rushed for 100 yards in back-to-back games for the first time, including a career-high 155 in last week's loss to Atlanta. "Ladell, since I've been here, everything we've asked him to do, he's done," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "He and Clinton have been an excellent tandem back there. We feel like he's a Redskin, he's our kind of guy. It's something we don't have to worry about going into the offseason."
Analysis: Betts is a No. 2 Fantasy RB going up against the Eagles at home in Week 14. Use him in that role for the game.
News: Ladell Betts is getting his first taste of life as a regular starting running back in the NFL, and the results look pretty good. He's had back-to-back 100-yard games, quite a change of pace for someone who has spent 4 1/2 years as a role player with the Washington Redskins. Which leads to the inevitable question: How difficult would it be to go back to being a backup? "It'd be hard," Betts said. "But, at the same time, I'm a team guy." That's what you get with Betts, a player who wants his opportunities, but perhaps not at the cost of stability. With a shot at his first 1,000-yard season, Betts has a chance to parlay success into a nice, new contract - certainly one that pays better than his current $585,000 salary - should he opt to become a free agent when his current deal expires at the end of the season.
Analysis: Coach Joe Gibbs doesn't want Betts to go anywhere and has been talking to the back about a signing a new deal before the season ends. Gibbs said there will be enough opportunities for both Betts and Portis to contribute regularly next season, not to mention the fact that Betts is good insurance in case Portis gets hurt again. Betts is playing well filling in for Portis this season and has a great matchup in Week 14 against Philadelphia. Consider him a solid No. 2 option.
News: According to the Washington Post, RB Ladell Betts is close to agreeing to a contract extension with the Redskins, who are working hard to prevent the veteran from hitting the free agent market. Betts, a second-round pick in 2002, is having a career season filling in for injured tailback Clinton Portis and has an expanded role in Al Saunders's offense. The pace of talks has picked up in recent weeks, however, and some sources have estimated that Betts could earn in the region of $6 million to $7 million guaranteed on a multiyear deal. Gibbs said keeping Betts in Washington is a priority. Betts has an outside shot at producing a 1,000-yard season and has back-to-back 100-yard games.
Analysis: Betts is playing well filling in for Portis and has a great matchup in Week 14 against Philadelphia. Consider him a solid No. 2 option.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had 28 carries for 155 yards and a touchdown (8-yard run) in a Week 13 loss to the Falcons. He also had three catches for 18 yards.
Analysis: Betts has now posted back-to-back 100-yard games and has been a solid running back in place of the injured Clinton Portis. Consider him a solid No. 2 RB for Week 14 against the Eagles.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts was sidelined in the second quarter against Carolina, but returned. Initial team reports said Betts had the wind knocked out of him. "It wasn't true," Betts said. "I took a shot. I thought I was on Mars. I needed to clear my head. There was a lot of hitting going on out there."
Analysis: Betts returned to the game and was fine. He finished with 24 carries for 104 yards against Carolina. Consider him a solid No. 2 RB for Week 13 against the Falcons.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts had 24 carries for 104 yards against Carolina. He also had two catches for 4 yards.
Analysis: It was a solid game for Betts, who is starting in place of Clinton Portis. Consider him a solid No. 2 RB for Week 13 against the Falcons.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed seven times for 18 yards at Tampa Bay in Week 11, but added five catches for 48 yards. He also had a fumble.
Analysis: We're surprised he didn't get more touches in the game. Consider him a No. 3 Fantasy RB at best when he plays vs. Carolina in Week 12.
News: Clinton Portis will have shoulder surgery and is headed for injury reserve, ending his season. Ladell Betts will take over as the starting running back for the remainder of the season.
Analysis: Betts is worth adding in all Fantasy leagues as a No. 2 or 3 running back or 'flex' option in Week 11 at Tampa Bay.
News: Washington RB Clinton Portis likely will miss about a month with a broken right hand, an injury that could end what has been a decidedly uneven season for him and his team, the Washington Post reported after Portis was hurt against Philadelphia. Bubba Tyer, the Redskins' director of sports medicine, said Portis would undergo surgery as soon as Monday to repair the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand, which is the bone that runs below the ring finger. Tyer said Portis would have screws inserted to stabilize the bone, but that the injury would be particularly difficult for Portis, because as a running back he must be comfortable gripping the football. Portis is right-handed. "It could be as long as four weeks, three or four, something like that," Tyer said. "He needs to be able to use his hands and function and be secure what he does with the football."
Analysis: This is awful for Portis owners. Keep him reserved for Week 11 against Tampa Bay and continue to monitor his status. The Redskins replaced Portis with Ladell Betts, who rushed 20 times for 83 yards against the Eagles. Even power running back T.J. Duckett saw action, rushing twice for 16 yards.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed 20 times for 83 yards in Week 10 at Philadelphia after starting RB Clinton Portis was forced to leave the game with a broken hand in the first quarter. T.J. Duckett saw two carries for 16 yards and caught a pass for a loss of three.
Analysis: With Portis likely sidelined for the next few weeks, Betts should be added in all leagues as a possible No. 2 RB. Duckett could sniff some goal line carries, but should be considered little more than a 'flex' option for Week 11 at Tampa Bay.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed for eight yards on three carries in a 22-19 win over the Cowboys in Week 9. Betts also had 30 yards receiving on three receptions.
Analysis: Betts doesn't get many touches now that Clinton Portis is healthy and in the lineup. His viable Fantasy days are gone and won't return until Portis is injured once again. The Redskins play the Eagles in Week 10.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries and added another 41 yards on five receptions as the Redskins lost 36-22 to the Colts in Week 7.
Analysis: Betts yards came in a mop up duty after the Colts extended the lead by more than 20 points and after the Redskins took out RB Clinton Portis. His viable Fantasy days are gone and won't return until Portis is injured once again. The Redskins are on a bye in Week 8.
News: RB Ladell Betts rushed for minus-2 yards on two carries in Week 6 as the Redskins lost 25-22 to the Titans.
Analysis: After a great start to the season, Betts is finally being brought down to Earth. His numbers have declined over the last three weeks from 37 yards to two yards to minus-2 yards. His days as a viable Fantasy option are done. We wouldn't recommend using him until Clinton Portis is once again out with an injury.
News: Ladell Betts carried just once for two yards in Week 5 at the N.Y. Giants. He also caught two passes for a total of 15 yards.
Analysis: Betts could see a lot more chances to contribute in Week 6 vs. Tennessee, but we wouldn't recommend using him as anything more than a bye-week replacement option at the flex position.
News: Ladell Betts had 11 carries for 37 yards in Week 4 against the Jaguars. He also had one reception for four yards.
Analysis: Betts was back in a reserve role despite a solid game last week in Houston. He is only worth considering as a No. 4 or 5 Fantasy running back or 'flex' option for Week 5 at N.Y. Giants.
News: RB Ladell Betts led all Redskins rushers in Week 3 at Houston by racking up 124 yards on 16 carries. He had one rushing touchdown as well as 27 yards on three receptions.
Analysis: Betts continues to be a pleasant Fantasy surprise and he even rushed for 124 yards with Clinton Portis starting in the backfield. But, let's not forget who the Redskins' opponent was -- the Houston Texans. Betts probably won't have as good as stats for Week 4 vs. Jacksonville making him a 'flex' option at best.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts, who had started just two games in his first four seasons, is one of two players in the league to be leading a team in rushing and receiving. The other is San Diego All-Pro RB LaDainian Tomlinson. "It just means that we have stuff to get corrected," Betts said of him, and not one of the heralded wide receivers, leading the Redskins in catches.
Analysis: Clinton Portis is expected back in the Redskins starting lineup Week 3 at Houston, meaning Betts will revert to his backup role. Portis owners still might want to hold onto Betts before dumping him on the wire just to make sure Portis is back to 100 percent. Otherwise, Betts remains a poor Fantasy option for Week 3 if Portis starts.
News: Ladell Betts carried 11 times for 40 yards and he added a game-high seven receptions for a team-high 57 yards in Week 2 at Dallas. He was getting the start in place of Clinton Portis (shoulder) who was inactive.
Analysis: Betts had a decent night for a No. 3 running back or 'flex' player in leagues which give a point per every 10 yards. If Portis is unable to go in Week 3 at Houston, Betts will have the same Fantasy appeal as he did in this game.
News: Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another twist in the running back's injury saga. "He didn't practice today. ... If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said. Gibbs said Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running backs against the Cowboys. Portis was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report, with Gibbs citing the pounding Portis took in the Monday night season opener against Minnesota.
Analysis: Portis wore pads and said he "ran a few routes" during Friday's practice, but apparently that wasn't enough. Betts had 53 total yards in the opener and could be in line for a similar output in Week 2. If that's something that works for you, he's a decent option. Duckett could be an option on the goal line if and when Portis is officially ruled out.
News: Ladell Betts got the start in Week 1 against the Vikings ahead of Clinton Portis (shoulder). He carried eight times for 22 yards and reeled in three balls for 31 yards.
Analysis: Betts had 53 total yards in the opener, but he will likely see a lot fewer touches in Week 2 at Dallas with Portis looking healthy and ready to start again.
News: In a surprise announcement, coach Joe Gibbs said Saturday he thinks Clinton Portis will be a backup in the Washington Redskins' Monday night opener against the Minnesota Vikings. "If I had to say, I think Ladell will start and Clinton will play a backup role in the game," Gibbs said. "That's the way I think it's going to go. I think that's what we've tried to accurately portray during the week." It isn't what Portis has portrayed. On Thursday, Portis all but ruled himself out of the game and said he was only 75 percent healthy. On Friday, he said he wasn't even sure he would return in time for the Week 2 game at Dallas, then joked that he was up to 83 percent. On Saturday, Portis changed his tune. "I'm about 93.9 right now," he said. "I've still got two more days to get to 100 percent. ... At the rate things have been increasing, it looks pretty good."
Analysis: With all this uncertainty, Fantasy owners are advised to resist the temptation to start their first-round back. The Redskins would likely keep him out of goal line situations anyway and you should have a reserve running back in your lineup that is going to be a less risky option to go with. Ladell Betts remains the better option in Washington's backfield for Week 1. He should be considered a decent No. 2 RB against Minnesota.
News: Redskins RB Clinton Portis is targeting Washington's second game for his return from a shoulder injury. He essentially ruled himself out for the Monday night opener against the Vikings. He wore a helmet and his No. 26 jersey during the entire practice Friday for the first time since partially dislocating his left shoulder four weeks ago, but said he was focusing on the upcoming games against Dallas and Houston. Ladell Betts is expected to start Monday.
Analysis: Betts becomes a nice option as a No. 3 Fantasy RB in all leagues and as a spot starter for those owners who will be sitting Portis. Expect a decent game for the runner, who has good hands and is a versatile back.
News: Redskins.com confirms that RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) is questionable for Week 1 vs. Minnesota. Moreover, if Portis cannot play, Ladell Betts is expected to start but share carries with newcomer T.J. Duckett and veteran plow Rock Cartwright. The Redskins did not practice on Wednesday; their Week 1 game is Monday night.
Analysis: There should be a mad dash for Betts in all Fantasy leagues since he could log as many as 15 carries if Portis misses Monday. Betts looks like solid insurance for Portis and is worth using as a No. 3 RB at worst this week.
News: Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) and CB Shawn Springs (abdomen) are the only players whose availability is in serious doubt for the opener. "Most of the other guys are ready to roll," Gibbs said. Ladell Betts and T.J. Duckett figure to split carries in Week 1.
Analysis: Consider starting Betts or Duckett only in deeper leagues, or formats where you start three or more running backs. While they will split carries, it's possible Duckett gets all the goal-line work, though. So, Betts could start, but Duckett could still outscore him. It will be a crapshoot until Duckett gets his feet under him in Washington or Portis is ready to play.
News: With Clinton Portis (dislocated shoulder) out, Ladell Betts figures to start Saturday night, but the Redskins picked up T.J. Duckett on Wednesday in a trade with Atlanta. "The fact that Clinton got nicked there causes some concerns," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "It probably causes you to think. But there certainly wasn't a panic to do something. But when T.J.'s name came up, we felt it was something we needed to research."
Analysis: Betts likely will relinquish carries to Duckett as the new acquisition becomes accustomed to the offense, but both figure to be reserve RBs once Portis can return. Consider them handcuff options in the later rounds if you take the injury risk on Portis in the early rounds. Duckett's history as a goal-line back has to concern Portis owners just as much as the injury at this point.
News: The Atlanta Falcons traded running back T.J. Duckett to the Washington Redskins on Tuesday as part of a three-team deal and acquired holdout receiver Ashley Lelie from the Denver Broncos. The Broncos received Washington's third-round pick in the 2007 draft as part of the deal, according to two officials within the league who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced. Betts felt his position as the No. 2 back behind Portis was secure. Asked for his reaction to the trade, Betts said: "I don't understand it. But it's a business, and it is what it is."
Analysis: Duckett is now expected to get the lion's share of reps in case Clinton Portis (shoulder) is out to start the season, and he'll also pick up short yardage and goal-line carries for the whole season. That absolutely slashes Betts' Fantasy value when Portis is healthy. Now, if Portis misses a week or two, don't write off Betts; he could get as many as 15 touches even with Duckett playing. If you already drafted Betts, don't drop him yet -- wait and see what happens with Portis first. In leagues with deeper rosters, Betts is worth hanging on to anyway since he should fit into the Redskins' offense somehow. There is also the chance that Washington deals Betts, so don't assume he's useless.
News: Betts (hamstring) was able to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets. He had three carries for just nine yards.
Analysis: Betts might figure into the mix for the regular season opener if Clinton Portis (shoulder) is unable to rehab his shoulder and be ready. However, he is only worth a late-round pick when filling out your roster on Draft Day, because his Fantasy value is likely short-term.
News: Ladell Betts (hamstring) will be in the lineup for Saturday's preseason game vs. the N.Y. Jets and he'll be starting in place of Clinton Portis (shoulder). He believes he has something to offer the Redskins offense on a regular basis and this will be his chance to show it. "I'm more of a gritty runner while Clinton is more of a home-run hitter," Betts said. "Other than that, I don't think there's much difference between us. We'll see what happens," Betts told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Analysis: When Portis returns, perhaps for the season-opener Sept. 11, Betts' playing time will diminish. He needs to make a lasting impression now. NFL personnel experts have long memories and watch plenty of tape. If Betts shows speed, quickness, power between the tackles and durability, someone will make him a substantial offer in the spring of 2007.
News: Ladell Betts was unable to play in Sunday's preseason game at Cincinnati due to a mild hamstring injury. He has been affected by the injury all this past week.
Analysis: Betts trying to stave off challenges from Kerry Carter and Rock Cartwright for the No. 2 running back job to Clinton Portis (shoulder). Portis left Sunday's game due to a subluxation of his left shoulder, so if he is to miss any time into the regular season, Betts would figure to have some decent short-term Fantasy appeal.
News: Washington's new offensive coordinator Al Saunders raved about back Ladell Betts, who's due to be a free agent in March. Betts ran for 338 yards on 89 carries last season, caught 10 passes for 78 yards and scored once on the ground, once through the air and on a 94-yard kickoff return. He also averaged 25.9 yards on kickoff returns.
Analysis: "I don't know if people realize what a quality player Ladell is," Saunders said. "He's a three-dimensional player -- he runs the ball, he can catch it and he can block well enough to be successful. Clinton [Portis] is Clinton, one of the dominant backs in the NFL. Having somebody like Ladell has been a surprise because I knew he was good, but not this good. We'll have situations where Ladell and Clinton will be in the game at the same time. Ladell deserves to play and we've got to find a way to get him on the field and not just as a back-up player to Clinton."
News: Ladell Betts rushed for 338 yards and one TD in 12 games this season as the No. 2 running back in Washington. He also caught 10 passes for 78 yards with a TD.
Analysis: Betts is a talented back but will remain behind Clinton Portis on the depth chart. He is no better than late-round insurance for owners who land Portis in most 2006 drafts.
News: Ladell Betts carried the ball 12 times for 44 yards and a TD in Week 15 vs. Dallas.
Analysis: Betts is not a recommended option in Week 16 vs. the Giants.

News: Ladell Betts had seven carries for 26 yards and three catches for 19 yards and a touchdown.

News: Redskins backup RB Ladell Betts had 92 rush yards vs. San Francisco in Week 7. He got a bunch of playing time because Washington got out to a big lead.
Analysis: Betts shouldn't be used or be on a Fantasy roster unless Portis gets hurt. Fantasy owners who are playoff bound may consider Betts as insurance.
News: RB Ladell Betts returned to practice Wednesday after missing last week's practices and the Chiefs game with an injured groin.
Analysis: Betts is Clinton Portis' (probable: calf) primary backup. With an outstanding matchup vs. the woeful 49ers' banged-up defense, Betts could see enough mopup duty to be a deep sleeper option in Week 7.
News: RB Ladell Betts (groin) did not practice this week and has been downgraded to doubtful for Week 6 at Kansas City. If he can't go, Rock Cartwright will likely be the No. 2 running back behind Clinton Portis (calf), who is listed as probable.
Analysis: You will have to avoid considering Betts in Week 6 at Kansas City. Cartwright doesn't figure to have enough of a role in the offense either to help in most leagues, because Portis will be relied upon heavily despite his mild calf strain.
News: RB Ladell Betts is questionable with a groin injury. If he can't go, Rock Cartwright will likely be the No. 2 running back behind Clinton Portis (calf), who is listed as probable.

News: The Redskins official website reports Ladell Betts has pushed Clinton Portis for playing time during organized team activities. "I have always thought Ladell runs hard," Portis said. "I said that at the beginning of last season. I'd say that he needs to be on the field more, but that would mean I'd be standing on the sidelines."
Analysis: Betts won't pass Portis on the team's depth chart, but he's still worth a late-round flier in leagues with 12-plus teams.
News: Ladell Betts will start Week 17 against the Vikings in place of Clinton Portis (torn pectoral muscle).
Analysis: Betts is a decent play in larger leagues for the regular season finale.
