Duckett released by Seattle
|
Updated 8/26/2009 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Edgerrin James is Seattle's latest aging star running back, less than a year and half after Shaun Alexander was unceremoniously booted out of town. The league's leading active rusher signed a one-year contract with the Seahawks on Tuesday night. He's being asked to help revive a rushing offense that has been generally dormant since February 2006, when Alexander was the NFL MVP and Seattle was in its only Super Bowl. Earlier Tuesday night, Seattle waived fellow veteran running back T.J. Duckett to clear roster space. Duckett confirmed to The Associated Press in a text message Tuesday night that he had been released. Seattle was at its preseason roster limit and had to shed someone to add James. | Analysis: The 28-year-old Duckett, who played in Atlanta for current Seahawks coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp from 2004-05, led Seattle with eight touchdowns rushing last season. But he did not start a game in his only season with the Seahawks, and he was relegated by former coach Mike Holmgren to almost exclusively being a short-yardage back. Until we know what situation Duckett falls into next, his Fantasy value is very minimal. |
Duckett mysteriously not at practice

| News: T.J. Duckett was nowhere to be seen in practice Tuesday morning, hours after an Internet report that Seattle is releasing him to make roster room for James. A team spokesman said the veteran running back is still on the roster. | Analysis: Duckett was expected to play a bigger role in the offense this season, but this news changes matters. His value was not going to be very high anyway, with Julius Jones expected to see most of the carries, but he was going to be used extensively in the red zone and is a player that we were recommending as a late-round flier pick. |
Report: James signs with Seahawks

| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Pro Football Talk is reporting that RB Edgerrin James has signed with the Seahawks on Monday. There is no official word from the team, and no other source has confirmed the report, but the move could make sense. The Seahawks have only Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett as proven rushers on the roster, and James could provide depth. | Analysis: Keep an eye on the situation to make sure it's official, but James still has minimal Fantasy value. He's also no lock to make the team since he's 31 and looked slow at times in 2008 with the Cardinals, when he eventually lost his starting job to rookie Tim Hightower. The Seahawks like the combination of Jones and Duckett, and coach Jim Mora has said Duckett will be a fourth-quarter weapon this year. At best, draft James with a late-round pick in deep formats. |
Duckett could see expanded role
|
Updated 8/11/2009 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle coach Jim Mora said Tuesday that RB T.J. Duckett will play a significant role this year in tandem with Julius Jones. Mora indicated Duckett could be the one closing out games for the Seahawks. "T.J., when I worked with him in the past, was kind of a closer," Mora said. "He's capable of breaking some big runs and pounding people in the secondary. He's very capable of closing out a game for you, [like] in a four minute situation, when you have to run the football. ... But I believe you'll see his role expanding a little bit." | Analysis: Duckett is the kind of RB to target with a late-round pick in all leagues, especially TD-only formats. He will get more of an opportunity this year, especially if Jones continues to struggle. Duckett has a good familiarity with the new coaching staff having previously worked with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Atlanta. Plan on drafting Duckett with a late-round flier. |
Jones ready for new year
|
Updated 8/5/2009 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle RB Julius Jones is trying to move on from a disappointing season in his first year with the Seahawks in 2008. He said Wednesday that he's in a better frame of mind. "I'm trying to put that behind me," Jones said. "I feel 10 times better going into this season. I just feel more comfortable, more at ease, and I feel like the coaches have a little bit more confidence in me. Last year, I was coming into a new situation, and everything was brand new. What happened last year happened. This is a brand new year. Coach (Jim) Mora's got this team right where we need to be, and I'm excited to play for him." Jones is expected to compete with T.J. Duckett, with Jones the starter and Duckett the short-yardage back. Jones is fine with sharing carries. "You can't really go through a season by yourself," Jones said. "It's impossible. So you've got to have two backs. Definitely a bigger back to take more of the grunt work is always a good thing, too." | Analysis: Jones has a chance to make plays for the new regime, but we see Duckett scoring more touchdowns. Duckett should be considered a late-round sleeper, and Jones is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB worth a late-round pick. Jones has more upside if he can get the majority of carries and show he's not a bust, but we have to see it first. Hopefully, as he said, last year is behind him, and he's ready for a fresh start. |
Duckett wants more carries
|
Updated 7/15/2009 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: The News Tribune reports Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett would like to be more involved in the offense this year than just being a short-yardage back and the No. 2 rusher behind Julius Jones. "I would love to have more carries. I'm not just wanting to settle with being a short-yardage back just because of my size," Duckett said. "So yeah, definitely, mentally I'm ready to compete for that. Physically, I'm ready, so it's just a matter of now going into camp and working. Working and showing what I can do. And trying -- I don't want to say knocking the stigma of a big back off -- but showing I can be more of a guy who runs inside the 20s or a first- and second-down guy. And give the coaches more confidence that I can make things happen." | Analysis: Duckett is the kind of RB to target with a late-round pick in all leagues, especially TD-only formats. He will get more of an opportunity this year, especially if Jones continues to struggle. Duckett has a good familiarity with the new coaching staff having previously worked with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Atlanta. Plan on drafting Duckett with a late-round flier. |
Duckett hopes for increased role
|

| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: The News Tribune reports Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett fulfilled his role last season as the team's short-yardage and goal line runner. He finished with only 172 yards, but totaled eight touchdowns. While satisfied with how he performed in a limited role last year, Duckett said Thursday that he's pleased with his expanded role in the new Seattle offense, thanks to being reunited with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. Duckett had his best success since arriving in the NFL playing for Knapp-led offenses. In Knapp's first year in charge of the offense in Atlanta, Duckett averaged a career-high 4.9 yards a carry. At 6-foot, 254 pounds, Duckett will be the bruiser in Seattle's backfield combo, along with the more elusive Julius Jones. | Analysis: Duckett might get a chance at a few more carries this year, but he's still going to be the goal-line back for the Seahawks. Consider him with a late-round pick in standard leagues and a middle-round selection in touchdown-only formats. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett rushed six times for 13 yards in Week 17 in Arizona, including a 1-yard touchdown. He finished the season with eight touchdowns and 172 yards. | Analysis: Duckett was primarily used as a short-yardage and goal line back. He had some low-end appeal in touchdown only leagues or as a stopgap in larger leagues and will likely maintain similar value next season. He will be worth merely a late-round draft pick. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett had one carry Week 16 against the Jets for a total of two yards. This was the fewest attempts Duckett has had since Nov. 23 against Washington. | Analysis: Duckett can has seven touchdowns on the year as a short-yardage specialist. However, he doesn't score them frequently enough and is too risky of a start for Fantasy. Leave him on waivers Week 17. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett ran the ball three times for four yards Week 15 at St. Louis, scoring on a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. | Analysis: As a short-yardage specialist, Duckett gets occasional touchdowns, but he doesn't get them consistently enough to deserve a starting spot in Fantasy. Consider him nothing more than a last resort Week 16 against the Jets. |

| News: Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said RB Maurice Morris will start Sunday's game against New England, then he'll "sprinkle in" Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. | Analysis: It sounds like all three will share carries, with Morris getting the first touch, Jones the No. 2 option and Duckett the short-yardage back. For now, ignore all three running backs against the Patriots since there's no guarantee who will get the majority of touches. |

| News: Seattle RB T.J. Duckett had three carries for 20 yards Thursday at Dallas. | Analysis: Duckett is a low-end Fantasy RB and is not worth using in Week 14 against New England. He occasionally will get a red-zone touchdown but doesn't generate enough stats to help your Fantasy team on a regular basis. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett got only five carries for five yards Week 11 against the Cardinals, but made 40 percent of them count as he scored twice. Duckett accounted for both of the team's fourth-quarter touchdowns as he scored from 1-yard out with 12:46 to play and two yards out with 9:41 to play. | Analysis: The Seahawks brought Duckett in during the offseason to be their goal-line back and he has done that job for the most part in 2008 with six rushing scores. He doesn't have more than 14 yards in any of his last seven games and is getting only a few touches per game. Duckett has limited Fantasy appeal outside of touchdown leagues. The Seahawks play the Redskins Week 12. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett carried the ball two times for four yards during a Week 9 loss to the Eagles. Duckett got one carry in each half and both went for 2 yards. He now has 17 carries for 27 yards in his last five games. | Analysis: Duckett had a 19-carry, 79-yard outburst Week 3 against the Rams and even scored twice. Outside of that game he has received very little PT and hasn't done much with the few carries he has received. Duckett is third on the depth chart in Seattle and is pretty much a Fantasy reserve heading into Week 10 against the Dolphins. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett gained only one yard on eight carries Week 8 at San Francisco, but he made the one yard count. He scored a touchdown in the second quarter. | Analysis: Duckett is the goal-line and short-yardage back for Seattle, but he didn't exactly thrive in the role this week. As much as the Seahawks have struggled this season, Duckett doesn't deserve to start in Fantasy in Week 9 against the Eagles. |

| News: Seattle RB T.J. Duckett had one carry for minus-1 yard at Tampa Bay. Duckett is the No. 3 RB for the Seahawks behind Julius Jones (seven carries for 42 yards) and Maurice Morris (six carries for 56 yards). | Analysis: Duckett is the goal-line and short-yardage back for Seattle, but the Seahawks aren't getting close enough to score for Duckett to be successful. He has minimal Fantasy value at this time and should not be used in Week 8 at San Francisco. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett rushed twice for nine yards in Week 6 vs. Green Bay. | Analysis: Duckett has three touchdowns this season and he will continue to see touches down near the goal line. But there is no guarantee that he will get those looks each week and for that reason he remains a very low-end, last-resort Fantasy option in touchdown only leagues. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett rushed four times for 14 yards in Week 5 at the Giants. His longest run of the game went for six yards. | Analysis: For the first time in three games, Duckett did not score a touchdown. Part of the reason is that the Seahawks were never in the red zone against the Giants. He could continue to get some vulture touchdowns by the goal line over the course of the season, but this is what you risk if you start him. He is worthless in Fantasy if he does not score. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in a Week 3 win over the Rams. | Analysis: Duckett is a big man who is very hard to bring down. The Rams tried in vain Sunday, but the truck rumbled for almost 80 yards despite his lack of breakaway speed. His Fantasy value is probably as high as it will get right now because he will lose carries once Maurice Morris returns. The Seahawks are off in Week 4. |
Duckett finds end zone Sunday

| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle RB T.J. Duckett didn't see the ball much on Sunday against the 49ers but made the most of the carries he did have. Duckett got the ball on the goal line in the fourth quarter and scored. He finished with two carries for three yards. | Analysis: Duckett was the official backup in Week 2 with Maurice Morris being inactive. He still barely touched the ball. He will see carries on the goal-line for Seattle, however, and that keeps him Fantasy relevant. He could sniff the end zone again in Week 3 against the Rams, but that still makes him only a very low-end option. He probably should not be starting next week. |

Coach Mike Holmgren said he won't divvy time between Jones and Duckett as he did with Jones and Morris, but Duckett will get some carries. | Analysis: Duckett should get carries in Week 2 against the 49ers, but he's not worth using in any leagues at this time. Hopefully he can start producing now with Morris out. |

Ignore the rest. |

| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that all the Seattle running backs will play in Week 1 at Buffalo, meaning Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett will get carries. "Julius and I understand our situation," said Morris, Shaun Alexander's backup the past six seasons. "A lot of teams in the league are doing this, so it's no surprise to us that they're going to go in this direction." Jones also is onboard. "I'm excited," he said. "Everybody's cool with how this is being handled." | Analysis: The Seahawks will use Morris and Jones during rushing downs, with Morris during passing situations, and Duckett will likely get short-yardage carries. Go into Week 1 against the Bills with Morris as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option, Jones a low-end No. 3 option and Duckett a reserve Fantasy RB. |
Duckett scores two TDs in finale
|
Updated 8/30/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: T.J. Duckett showed he may be more than just the short-yardage back coach Mike Holmgren thinks he is by running for 71 yards and two touchdowns (runs of 24 yards and 1 yard) in the preseason finale vs. Oakland Friday. Duckett loved the first opportunity to show his new team he is more than the tank he appears to be. "With my size, you get put in a lot of categories," said Duckett, who will join Julius Jones and Maurice Morris as a three-headed monster at running back. "I think today was my first chance to be in every situation, to be in on every down -- to see what I can do." | Analysis: Duckett should wind up serving as the short-yardage/goal-line running back for the Seahawks. He might come up with some cheap touchdowns, but don't expect totals like this from the burly back. At best, he's worth a late-round pick in Fantasy drafts. |

| News: Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett had six carries for a team-high 46 yards during Monday's preseason game against the Chargers. He had a long carry of 12 yards and didn't see his first carry until the end of the third quarter. | Analysis: Julius Jones and Maurice Morris did most of the leg work Monday for the Chargers and that should show you the pecking order in Seattle. Duckett is at best a third-string RB and possible goal-line back. He is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy reserve heading into the season. |
Duckett plays little in preseason game
|
Updated 8/17/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle is locked in a running back battle between three players: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. Morris had just six touches in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago for 23 total yards and Duckett saw 12 carries for 27 yards. Rookie Justin Forsett actually looked the best with 15 carries for 136 yards, but he isn't considered a candidate to start. Consider Jones the odds on favorite. Jones is low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 RB in Fantasy drafts. | Analysis: The most plausible scenario has Morris and Jones splitting carries in the regular season. Duckett could get a good amount of touches near the goal line and for that reason could be a viable Fantasy running back in deeper touchdown leagues. Continue to monitor this situation. |
Morris wins Friday's RB battle
|
Updated 8/8/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle is locked in a running back battle between three players: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. On Friday, during their preseason opener against the Vikings, it was Morris who got the start and played with the first team. Morris also was the most impressive racking up 62 yards on six carries. Jones came in the game next and didn't do much on four carries. He finished with 15 yards. Duckett didn't see action until later but led the team with seven carries. Of course they went for a total of nine yards. | Analysis: The battle is far from over but it is safe to say that round one goes to Morris. Jones may have been limited a bit and is still more than in the running. Duckett obviously performed the worst of the trio and probably won't figure too prominently in Seattle's running game. He could see goal-line carries, however. The most plausible scenario has Morris and Jones splitting carries in the regular season. However, Seattle paid a lot of coin for Jones to come run for them, and that may be the deciding factor in who sees more work in the Seahawk offense. Nevertheless, Morris should be appealing as a late-round flier since he could be in line for up to 10 touches per week in 2008 (with room for more if Jones stumbles). Jones is low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 RB. |
Holmgren pondering Duckett's role
|
Updated 8/2/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle RB T.J. Duckett used to sit out with fellow stars at scrimmages when he was the lead runner in Atlanta a few years ago. But there was the seventh-year veteran, tying rookie seventh-round draft choice Justin Forsett for most carries on Saturday with nine. Duckett, signed from Detroit as a free agent last winter, gained 25 yards on those runs and caught two passes. Coach Mike Holmgren is still trying to figure out how he wants to use the tank-like Duckett in Seattle's completely remodeled running game. | Analysis: The coach has already declared that Julius Jones and Maurice Morris will be co-starters. "I'm the biggest back we've got. Hopefully, I bring some power," said the 254-pound Duckett. But he often runs more like a halfback - shifting and to the outside. Saturday, he was stopped twice for no gain inside on short-yardage downs, though Holmgren cautioned not to read much into that because the plays and personnel will change when the games count. "You kind of get the feeling that Duckett's going to be a load," Holmgren said. He's well worth a late-round pick, partially as insurance for Julius Jones and partially as a touchdown producer. |
Duckett's role still TBD
|
Updated 7/28/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Finding himself stuck in a crowd is nothing new to T.J. Duckett. In Seattle, he's again stuck in a group of running backs, each trying to stand out and earn time on the field. In a makeover of the Seahawks running game during the offseason, Duckett was the third part of a four-step process. Even though the 254-pound, tank-built Duckett has been impressive through spring minicamps and in the opening days of training camp, the Seahawks still are trying to find ways to use him. "All you can do is just go out there and thrive off each other and push each other," Duckett said. | Analysis: After a year of being mostly misused in Washington, T.J. Duckett landed with the Lions in 2007 and notched 65 carries for 335 yards (5.2 avg. -- a career-best) and three touchdowns with 54 receiving yards. Duckett now has some upside as a decent reserve Fantasy RB since he'll be a part of an explosive offense in 2008 and might have a shot at as many as five touchdowns. He's well worth a late-round pick, partially as insurance for Julius Jones and partially as a touchdown producer. |
Holmgren won't name starting RB
|
Updated 7/7/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: USA Today reports that Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren is anticipating a stronger year from his running attack in 2008, but hasn't quite determined how his primary rushers -- newcomers Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett and Seahawk stalwart Maurice Morris -- will work in the offense. Furthermore, Holmgren is unsure on his starter. "We probably won't make that decision right until late. We'll go into training camp," Holmgren said about naming a starting running back. "You know Mo (Morris) and Julius are going to carry the ball a good portion of the time. Leonard's (Weaver) going to be our starting fullback. The one I have to figure out a little bit is how we are going to use Duckett." | Analysis: We'd be stunned if Jones wasn't named the starter, especially after Seattle doled out nearly $12 million over four years for his services this offseason. Jones is expected to start and see 15-to-20 touches per game with Morris working behind him (5-to-10 touches) and T.J. Duckett working in short-yardage/goal-line situations. We see Jones as a good No. 2 Fantasy RB worth a pick between Rounds 3 and 5, Duckett as a potential touchdown vulture worth a middle- to late-round choice and Morris as a decent reserve worth a late-round pick. |
Duckett ready to run

Updated 5/8/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: Seattle RB T.J. Duckett is a running back who's built like a linebacker, a tailback big enough to pass for a fullback. He weighs 254 pounds, a former first-round pick who averaged nearly eight touchdowns his first four seasons in the league but is now on his fourth team in the past four seasons. Seattle coach Mike Holmgren is still considering a number of ways to swing his new sledgehammer out of the backfield. "He has been a halfback," Holmgren said in the Seattle Times. "But I would like him to move into fullback a little bit." Duckett said he's ready for whatever role gets handed to him. "Whatever it is, it doesn't really matter," he said. "Whatever I'm called to do, I'm going to do it to the best of my ability." | Analysis: Duckett will likely play the short-yardage role for the Seahawks. He is worth using in touchdown only leagues and can be considered a serviceable No. 4 Fantasy RB in 2008. |
Duckett benefits from Alexander cut
|
Updated 4/23/2008 |
| T.J. Duckett, RB SEA | |
| News: As expected, the Seahawks released RB Shaun Alexander on Tuesday, eliminating a running back from Seattle's corps, and giving T.J. Duckett a defined role in the Seattle offense. Duckett was someone the team wanted last offseason to help with their short-yardage game. Thus, it is expected that Duckett will be a short-yardage/goal-line type with the Seahawks. Julius Jones is expected to be Seattle's featured running back. | Analysis: After a year of being mostly misused in Washington, T.J. Duckett landed with the Lions in 2007 and notched 65 carries for 335 yards (5.2 avg. -- a career-best) and three touchdowns with 54 receiving yards. Duckett now has some upside as a decent reserve Fantasy RB since he'll be a part of an explosive offense in 2008 and might have a shot at as many as seven touchdowns. | News: T.J. Duckett is heading to the Seattle Seahawks with a five-year contract, the free agent running back told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. After a year of being mostly misused in Washington, T.J. Duckett landed with the Lions in 2007 and notched 65 carries for 335 yards (5.2 avg. -- a career-best) and three touchdowns with 54 receiving yards. | Analysis: Both the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattle Times point out that Duckett was someone the team wanted last offseason to help with their short-yardage game. Thus, it is expected that Duckett will be a short-yardage/goal-line type with the Seahawks. That does suggest that goal-line carries will be out for Shaun Alexander. In turn, it gives Duckett minimal upside as a reserve Fantasy RB since he'll be a part of an explosive offense in 2008 and might have a shot at as many as 10 touchdowns. |

| News: After a year of being mostly misused in Washington, T.J. Duckett landed with the Lions and found some success. In 12 games, Duckett notched 65 carries for 335 yards (5.2 avg. -- a career-best) and three touchdowns with 54 receiving yards. For the second straight year, Duckett didn't have any fumbles. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. | Analysis: Duckett should land somewhere as a short-yardage/goal-line runner, if not a total change-of-pace back. Detroit certainly is a candidate; Duckett is a fan of new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto's style, and the Lions might want someone familiar with the offense to keep Kevin Jones' seat warm (Jones is expected to miss an early part of the season). Duckett is a late-round pick in most drafts next season. |

Duckett, Bell to fill in for Jones

| News: A torn knee ligament will keep Lions RB Kevin Jones out of the team's final regular-season game this weekend and could sideline him until the start of training camp. Tests revealed a torn ACL in Jones' right knee. He was injured late in the first half of Sunday's 25-20 victory over Kansas City after being tackled on a short reception. Coach Rod Marinelli said Monday the team's medical staff will wait until swelling goes down in the knee to determine the best remedy. He wasn't sure of the extent of the tear or whether it will need surgery. Marinelli said he hopes to have Jones back when training camp begins in late July. The former Virginia Tech standout has missed 10 games due to injuries since Detroit selected him in the first round of the 2004 draft. | Analysis: T.J. Duckett, who rushed for a season-best 102 yards against Kansas City, should get the bulk of the carries Sunday when Detroit ends the regular season at Green Bay. Marinelli said the Lions also will use Aveion Cason and Tatum Bell, but whomever runs for the Lions will have their hands full as the Packers haven't allowed a rushing TD to a RB at home since Week 5 -- with no 100-yard rushers in that span. Consider Duckett a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB against the Packers. |

| News: Lions RB T.J. Duckett rushed 15 times for 102 yards in Week 16 vs. Kansas City, including a 11-yard touchdown, while playing in place of Kevin Jones who left with a knee injury. He also caught two passes for 22 yards. | Analysis: After the game, the Lions acknowledged that the injury looked "pretty serious" and that could mean that Duckett will be in line for a start in Week 17 at Green Bay. Monitor that situation over the course of the week as Duckett will be a nice sleeper in deep formats. |

| News: Lions RB T.J. Duckett (illness) is listed as probable for Week 16 vs. Kansas City. He went through full practices Thursday and Friday after limited reps Wednesday. Duckett has been active for 10 games this season. He has totaled 204 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. | Analysis: Duckett got everyone's heart racing with a 32-yard touchdown run in Week 14, but returned Week 15 with just 10 rushing yards and zero touchdowns. He is still the backup to Kevin Jones in Detroit and sees limited reps per game. He has little to no Fantasy value. |
