News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris netted only 13 yards on four carries during the Lions' 45-41 loss at Green Bay in Week 17. Morris finished with less than five attempts for the third time in the past four games as Detroit continues to favor airing the ball out on offense (502 passing yards).
Analysis: Not only has Morris been limited by the Lions' potent passing game, but he continues to lose touches to starting RB Kevin Smith, who finished with 61 total yards on Sunday. Morris had his best outing of the regular season in his previous meeting with the Packers, but could not find much running room and posted just 3.3 yards per carry in Week 17. He should be viewed as a marginal Fantasy option in deeper playoff formats.
News: With RB Kevin Smith shouldering most of the carries out of the backfield recently, Detroit RB Maurice Morris continues to see his attempts plummet. Morris has been held to less than six carries in each of his past three games and totaled nine attempts during that span. Smith, in contrast, has registered 15 carries in each of his past two outings and remains the Lions' primary scoring threat. Detroit visits Green Bay in Week 17.
Analysis: Morris turned in his finest performance of the season in his previous game against the Packers. He racked up 120 yards from scrimmage, including a season-high 81 yards on nine receptions. However, he is unlikely to come close to those numbers despite Green Bay's defense allowing an average of 17.6 Fantasy points per game to opposing backs. Consider Morris a possible flex option in deeper Fantasy formats for Week 17.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris had just 32 total yards 22 rushing, 10 receiving in Week 16, as the Lions defeated the Chargers 38-10. He received five carries and was targeted once in the passing game.
Analysis: Morris has not been a big part of the Lions offense in recent weeks, and while the six touches he got in Week 16 are better than the zero touches he got in Week 15, it still doesnt make him much of a Fantasy option. While he did total 120 yards in Week 12 against the Packers, he is not a recommended Fantasy RB for Week 17 against Green Bay, despite their 18th place ranking among NFL defense against opposing running backs.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris, who has been dealing with a chest injury, accrued no stats in the Lions 28-27 Week 15 win over the Chargers. Returning starter Kevin Smith got most of the looks in the offense.
Analysis: Morris saw the field sparingly in the game, but there has been no reports of a re-aggravation of the injury that had him on the injury report this week. With his increasingly limited role, he is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 16 against San Diego.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris, who left during Week 14s game against the Vikings with a chest injury, was not listed on the injury report for Wednesday, meaning he practiced in full on the first day of practice leading up to Week 15 at Oakland. This is good news, as Morris has a strong, albeit brief history against the Raiders, running for 138 yards on 30 carries against them in 2006, when he was a member of the Seahawks. This is certainly a strong matchup for Morris, as long as Kevin Smith, who was limited in practice on Wednesday, remains limited from an ankle injury that kept him out in Week 14.
Analysis: The Raiders have been getting gashed by opposing running backs this season, ranking 29th in the NFL in Fantasy points allowed to running backs. Over the last three weeks, they have allowed three touchdowns on 147 yards-per game. If Morris is indeed the go-to back for the Lions, he could be in line for a solid performance and should be a No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 15.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris left Week 14's game against the Vikings with a chest injury in the second quarter. He returned in the second half, but ran the ball just once after halftime, gaining four yards. Morris finished with 13 yards on four carries, and he also caught a single pass for another 3 yards.
Analysis: With Kevin Smith out with an ankle injury, Morris looked poised to have a productive week, but he was mostly a non-factor in Week 14. Depending on Smith's progress, as well as Morris' own status, Morris could still be worth a look in Week 15, so be sure to check back on both players.
News: With Kevin Smith looking unlikely to play in Week 14 against the Vikings, Lions RB Maurice Morris stands to see more touches this week. Morris carried the ball 12 times in Week 13 against the Saints, as Smith re-injured his ankle in the game, and there's a good chance that Morris will be the Lions' main back for the entire matchup against Minnesota. While the Vikings have a decent rushing defense, Morris -- who has made 14 catches over the last two weeks -- could exploit their 26th-ranked passing defense.
Analysis: Morris has not had much success on the ground against the Vikings over the last few years, but as a pass receiver, he could give his Fantasy owners some production. His versatility, along with a favorable matchup, make Morris a reasonable choice as a No. 2 Fantasy RB in Week 14.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris did not get the start in Week 13 against the Saints but was still able to have a productive outing. He gained 38 yards on 12 carries and also caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in the 31-17 loss. His second score of the year came in the third quarter when QB Matthew Stafford found him from 9 yards out. Morris, who averaged 3.2 yards per carry, led Detroit in rushing in the defeat.
Analysis: Morris was not seeing much work early on Sunday night but after Kevin Smith re-injured his ankle, he became the main back for Detroit. He could see an improved role going forward if Smith misses time so keep an eye on the situation going forward. Morris should only benefit from more playing time in the Lions' potent offense so if he is expected to carry the load in Week 14 against the Vikings, consider getting him active in Fantasy.
News: With Kevin Smith nursing an ankle injury, Lions RB Maurice Morris could see the bulk of the carries in Week 13 against the Saints. He came on for the injured Smith on Thanksgiving and totaled 120 yards. New Orleans enters Sunday ranked 17th in the league in run defense, giving up over 117 yards per game, and have allowed an average of 17 Fantasy points to opposing running backs.
Analysis: Smith's status for Week 13 will be better known once Detroit starts practicing so owners should keep an eye on his progress going forward. Morris has proven to be a solid contributor when given the opportunity and should be able to gain some yards against the Saints on Sunday, if he gets the start. New Orleans has given up eight total touchdowns to running backs thus far and has allowed 100 yards rushing in all but five games. Consider Morris a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 13.
News:Maurice Morris was benched for Kevin Smith heading into the Lions' Thanksgiving Day game vs. the Packers, but a leg injury to Smith forced Morris back into action -- and he came through. Morris had 39 yards on seven carries and led the Lions with 81 yards on nine catches, playing quite a bit once Smith hit the sideline. He did share some carries with Keiland Williams, who scored on a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: The early report on Smith is that he suffered a high-ankle sprain, which should keep him out of the Lions' next game at New Orleans. That would re-open the door for Morris to start and play a lot and in turn make him a No. 3 RB in standard formats and a low-end No. 2 RB in PPR leagues. We'll keep you posted on the Smith news, but after everyone abandoned ship on Morris when Smith emerged last week, he'll likely be back in the good graces of Fantasy owners beginning in Week 13.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (ankle) practiced in full Monday in prep for a Thanksgiving game against the Packers. Barring a setback, he is expected to play Week 12.
Analysis: Fantasy owners were excited about Morris heading into Week 11 since he had a favorable matchup against the Panthers. Unfortunately, he rushed for just 29 yards on seven carries, while Kevin Smith had a breakout game and likely bypassed Morris on the depth chart. Morris will still likely be involved in the game plan Week 12, but we should expect the same amount of limited touches he got Sunday. Look to better Fantasy options in Week 12.
News: With a matchup against the run-deficient Panthers run defense in Week 11, expectations were high for Maurice Morris. And in fact the Lions did dominate the Panthers on the ground for 169 yards -- but Morris had just 29 of them on seven carries. Morris started and dominated the playing time very early on with eight snaps to four by Kevin Smith. But then Smith took off on a 43-yard run and a 28-yard screen catch-and-go for a touchdown and that was the end of that. After Smith's big gains, he played on 39 snaps while Morris pitched in on just six more in the game. Smith finished with 201 total yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: We knew that Smith would play a role for the Lions, but it was evident after those big plays by Smith that Morris would become a backup. That's a safe expectation for Morris going forward now that Smith has snared the primary rushing workload. Expect minimal numbers from Morris in Week 12 vs. the Packers.
News: With the Panthers and their dreadful run defense coming to Detroit in Week 11, the door is open for RB Maurice Morris to have a decent game and be a factor in Fantasy Football. Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said Thursday that Morris would indeed be the starter but would "program in playing time" for rushers Keiland Williams and Kevin Smith. Morris has had at least 11 touches in each of his last three games with at least 50 total yards. The Panthers have allowed a rushing touchdown in seven of nine games and in the two that they didn't yield a score, the starting back had at least 80 rush yards. They're giving up 129.1 rushing yards on average.
Analysis: Maurice Morris isn't your typical Fantasy starter, but with the matchup being what it is and the Lions' run game involving who they have, he comes into play. We've seen him do well in bad matchups before while replacing Jahvid Best, and with Best on the shelf again Morris could be in a position to put up some numbers. We'd start him as a middle- to low-end No. 2 RB in Week 11.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris led the Lions with 44 yards on the ground in Week 10 against the Bears. He carried the ball 10 times, his longest run going for 13 yards. The Lions played from behind most of the game, so the running game never really got going. Morris was targeted twice, catching one pass for 6 yards. Detroit would lose to Chicago, 37-13.
Analysis: Morris got the start again with Jahvid Best inactive because of a concussion. Matthew Stafford couldn't rely on Morris on Sunday, which is contributed to the team's struggles. Detroit faces Carolina next week, a team allowing 137.6 rushing yards per contest this year. The Panthers have also given up 12 rushing scores. While that is all good, Morris is no Best and is at best a No. 3 RB option. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor the running back situation in Detroit before making a roster decision next weekend.

News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris took first-team reps during practice on Tuesday as Jahvid Best continued to sit out due to his concussion. Newly re-signed RB Kevin Smith took snaps with the third team in preparation for Week 10 against Chicago. The Bears enter Sunday ranked 12th in the league against the run, giving up 110 yards per game, and have allowed an average of 15 Fantasy points to opposing running backs.
Analysis: Morris is expected to get the start against the Bears but Smiths prior knowledge of Detroits offensive system could see him contribute on Sunday. Owners should keep an eye on the situation going forward as Best is expected to miss another game. Morris has rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown over his last two games and could be worth a look in larger formats against Chicago. Consider Morris a No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 10.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris registered season highs in carries (13) and rushing yards (58) during the Lions' 45-10 victory over Denver in Week 8. Morris, who received the starting nod as Jahvid Best missed his second straight game with a concussion, reached the end zone for the first time this season on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. Morris also had one catch for seven yards while being targeted three times by QB Matthew Stafford.
Analysis: A week after splitting the Lions' rushing attempts evenly with Keiland Williams (nine), Morris finished with two more carries and posted an average of 4.5 yards per attempt. Morris also had 33 more yards than his backfield mate and was the only one to score a touchdown. It's unclear if Best will be able to return following the team's upcoming bye so Fantasy owners should consider Morris the back to keep between him and Williams.
News: With starting Detroit RB Jahvid Best (concussion) likely out again for Week 8, RB Maurice Morris is expected to receive his second consecutive start against Denver. Although the Lions will certainly miss Bests big-play ability, the Lions rushing production didnt suffer without him. Morris and RB Keiland Williams combined for 94 rushing yards in Week 7 against Atlanta, the team's fourth-highest rushing output this season.
Analysis: Morris and Williams filled in ably for Best, but Detroits run game lacked the ability to get needed yards in key situations. The rushing tandem received the same number of carries (nine), though Morris was more active in the passing game with two receptions for 13 yards. It was the third consecutive game he's hauled in at least one pass. Morris also has had some success against AFC opponents, rushing for three touchdowns in his past three games. Consider Morris a high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option with a slight boost in value if Best is inactive.
News: Making his first start in place of the injured Jahvid Best (concussion), Lions RB Maurice Morris didn't have a bad game Week 7 against the Falcons, rushing nine times for 50 yards, but the majority of his production came on a single 31-yard run in the third quarter. He was so lackluster in the first half, rushing three times for eight yards, that he ended up losing more touches than expected to Keiland Williams, who finished with nine carries for 44 yards. Morris was clearly the preferred option on passing downs, though, catching two passes for 13 yards.
Analysis: Morris put up so-so numbers when he started for Best last year, so Fantasy owners shouldn't have had high hopes for the 32-year-old in the first place. He showed he can at least put up competent numbers when he gets enough touches, but the split carries with Williams isn't a good sign, especially since Williams is the one expected to run the ball at the goal line. Best might end up returning Week 8 at Denver, but if Morris starts, you should probably leave him for deeper leagues even with the favorable matchup.
News: With Jahvid Best (concussion) being ruled out on Friday, it's time for Maurice Morris to step up in the running game for the Lions in Week 7 against the Falcons. "I've been in this situation plenty of times," Morris told the team's official website. "It's one of those things where it's nothing new for me. I'll just go out there and do what I can to help this team continue to win." Coach Jim Schwartz backed Morris on Thursday. "We have a lot of confidence in Maurice Morris," Schwartz said. "Every time we've given him the ball, he's done well. And Keiland's done some good stuff in short yardage/goal-line yardage situations, so we'll be OK."
Analysis: Morris filled in admirably for parts of the second half of last season when he racked up 79 carries for 326 yards and five touchdowns with 18 catches for 116 yards. No official determination has been made on Best's status for Week 7. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has a lot of faith in Morris. While he isn't Best, he still can help your Fantasy team if he is getting the bulk of carries. The Falcons rank seventh against the run, allowing 97.5 yards per game. Consider him a high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option for Week 7.
News: Speaking out on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday, Lions head coach Jim Schwartz conceded that Jahvid Best has yet to practice this week but expressed his confidence in RBs Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams. Best is suffering the effects after his second concussion of the season and might miss Week 7, if not several weeks. "We have a lot of confidence in Maurice Morris," Schwartz said. "Every time we've given him the ball, he's done well. And Keiland's done some good stuff in short yardage/goal-line yardage situations, so we'll be OK."
Analysis: With the Lions' acquisition of Ronnie Brown falling through, the door is open for Morris to take on a sizable role in the Lions' run game while Best is out. Morris filled in admirably for parts of the second half of last season when he racked up 79 carries for 326 yards and five touchdowns with 18 catches for 116 yards. No official determination has been made on Best's status for Week 7. Morris is owned in just 21 percent of CBSSports.com leagues, so chances are he's out there in your league. Whether you need Best or not, Morris is worth adding since his potential is great if Best misses considerable time. The Lions host the Falcons in Week 7, a matchup that isn't so terrible for Morris if he gets the opportunity to play. We'll keep you posted on Best's status -- and Morris' expectations -- through the rest of the week.
News: With Lions RB Jahvid Best expected to miss Week 7 against the Falcons -- and perhaps much longer -- because of a concussion, Maurice Morris is expected to step up his performance. "With (Bests) injury, I'm going to play more," Morris said. "I approach every game the same as though I'm going to have to play a lot. You never know when ... your number is going to get called." Coach Jim Schwartz is plenty confident in the backup running back, who will likely split carries with Keiland Williams. "Maurice has answered the bell any time it's been rung for him," Schwartz said. Morris will have something of a tough test in his first start, though. The Falcons rank seventh against the run, allowing 97.5 yards per game.
Analysis: Meanwhile, the Falcons rank 27th against the pass, allowing 283.3 yards per game, which should make the Lions' game plan pretty clear. Frankly, the Best injury is reason enough for them to throw more than they already do; the matchup just makes it a no-brainer. Given that matchup, the likelihood of split carries, and his so-so performance filling in for Best last year, Morris is no more than a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB this week. A good performance would put him on the Fantasy radar for future weeks, though.
News: CBSSports.com NFL Insider Mike Freeman reported Thursday that Lions RB Jahvid Best has been advised by people close to him to "strongly consider sitting out the year" after suffering his second concussion of the season. With the Lions' acquisition of Ronnie Brown falling through, that would open the door for Maurice Morris to take on a sizable role in the Lions' run game as the primary backup to Best. Morris filled in admirably for parts of the second half of last season when he racked up 79 carries for 326 yards and five touchdowns with 18 catches for 116 yards. No official determination has been made on Best's status for Week 7 or beyond but he did not practice on Wednesday.

The Lions host the Falcons in Week 7, a matchup that isn't so terrible for Morris if he gets the opportunity to play. We'll keep you posted on Best's status -- and Morris' expectations -- through the rest of the week.
News: The Detroit Free Press reports Lions coach Jim Schwartz would not rule out RB Jahvid Best (concussion) for Week 7 against the Falcons during his weekly radio appearance in Detroit, but he said if Best cant play hes confident there wont be any drop-off at the running-back position. Maurice Morris has always played well when weve given him the football, Schwartz told the station. He has different roles when Jahvids been healthy but late in the year last year, middle of the year when Jahvids toes were bothering him, Maurice came in and played very well. The year before that he went in and rushed for 100 yards."
Analysis: Schwartz also mentioned Jerome Harrison, but Harrison would be traded later in the day in exchange for Ronnie Brown, who will not possibly be in line for touches. Keiland Williams could be in the mix for carries as well. Morris had two 100-yard games in his first two seasons of minimal use with the Lions, and was the only back besides Best to carry the football in Sundays 25-19 loss to the 49ers. He finished with five carries for 20 yards in that game. Morris would appear to be the top choice off the waiver wire of the three replacement options. However, he'll be a very low-end option -- at best -- for Week 7 against the Falcons.
News: The Detroit News reports that Lions RB Jahvid Best suffered a concussion, his second of the year, in his team's Week 6 loss to the 49ers. Best, who suffered a concussion during training camp, was hurt in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run. The team confirmed that Best was concussed following the game. If Best were to miss time, Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams would be likely to share the team's rushing workload.
Analysis: Morris entered Week 6 with zero rushing yards on just four carries, but he picked up 20 yards in the 25-19 loss to the 49ers. Morris carried the ball five times, and he also made one catch for another eight yards. He could be worth a flier in deeper formats this week if he finds himself in a position for more carries, however he'll be a very low-end option -- at best -- for Week 7 against the Falcons.
News:Maurice Morris entered Week 6 with zero rushing yards on just four carries, but he picked up 20 yards in the 25-19 loss to the 49ers. Morris carried the ball five times, and he also made one catch for another eight yards.
Analysis: This was Morris' biggest output since Week 1, but he has yet to have a game this year that has made an impact for Fantasy owners. Given his limited involvement in the Lions' offense, Morris can be ignored in virtually all leagues.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris was again not much of a factor in Week 5 against the Bears. Morris did not receive a carry in the 24-13 contest, finishing with just one reception for 8 yards.
Analysis: Morris has seem to be leapfrogged by Keiland Williams as the backup to Jahvid Best of late, but he has been seeing some receptions out of the backfield. However, he continues to see just a few snaps a game, which continues to limit his value. Morris can be ignored in most formats heading into Week 6 against San Francisco.

News: Lions RB Maurice Morris did little in the Week 3 overtime win at Minnesota. Morris rushed twice in the game for minus-4 yards. Morris also caught one pass for 14 yards. Morris was targeted twice by QB Matthew Stafford.
Analysis: Morris has actually been better catching the football thus far this season. As a running back, Morris isn't getting a whole lot of looks behind Jahvid Best, Jerome Harrison and Keiland Williams. Morris can be ignored heading into Week 4 at Dallas.
News: Lions coach Jim Schwartz discussed his disappointment with RB Maurice Morris, who struggled with ball security in Week 1. Morris did miss time during the preseason with a broken right hand. "He coughed the ball up a couple times, one of which they ruled him down. But we don't need to have those balls on the ground," Schwartz said. Morris added he is trying to adapt while he gets back to full strength. "I can't put it on the hand," he said. "I just got to get back into the fundamentals of basic football. Whether that's the five points of pressure or just getting used to guys around me attacking the ball, that's all."
Analysis: We didn't need Schwartz to tell us that he wasn't happy with Morris. The fact Jerome Harrison ended up as the team's second leading rusher behind Jahvid Best in Week 1 against the Bucs signaled Schwartz's disappointment. Now, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan is a big supporter of Morris, so hopefully he can get out of the doghouse after one bad game. But Morris is still more of a handcuff option for Best owners heading into Week 2, when the Lions play the Chiefs.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris totaled 4 yards on two carries in Week 1 against the Bucs. He also had 25 yards on two receptions.
Analysis: Morris rushed for 100-plus yards last season against Tampa Bay, but this time he didn't get many touches since Jahvid Best was healthy. Morris will be in the game plan every week, but will likely have limited touches as long as Best is healthy. He remains just a handcuff option for Best owners. The Lions play the Chiefs in Week 2.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (hand) is active for Week 1 against the Bucs. He was listed as probable on the injury report.
Analysis: Morris has Detroits last two 100-yard rushing performances, including 109 yards against the Bucs last season. Jahvid Best was limited by a toe injury in that Week 15 matchup, but he is healthy heading into Week 1 and should get the bulk of carries for Detroit. Morris will get some touches in Week 1, but he probably won't do enough to matter in Fantasy. Look to other RBs in Week 1.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (hand) is listed as probable for Week 1 at Tampa Bay. That news definitely makes offensive coordinator Scott Linehan happy. Morris expected return to action is a welcome security blanket for Linehan, who describes Morris as a Mr. Everything back, capable of handling any situation.
Analysis: Morris has Detroits last two 100-yard rushing performances, including 109 yards against the Bucs last season. Jahvid Best was limited by a toe injury in that Week 15 matchup, but he is healthy heading into Week 1 and should get the bulk of carries for Detroit. It's good that the offensive coordinator thinks highly of Morris, but he still has to hold off Jerome Harrison and Keiland Williams for backup carries, so he is not a recommended Fantasy start for Week 1.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris participated fully during practice periods open to media Thursday, and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan says Morris should be ready to contribute for Sundays opener against the Bucs. Morris expected return to action is a welcome security blanket for Linehan, who describes Morris as a Mr. Everything back, capable of handling any situation.

News: With Detroit RB Jahvid Best (head) out for Saturday's preseason game against New England, the Lions gave RB Aaron Brown the start in the backfield. He shared time with Jerome Harrison, but Brown had nine carries for 30 yards and caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Harrison had eight carries for 24 yards and caught three passes for 51 yards. Maurice Morris (hand) also missed the game due to injury.
Analysis: Morris still has a shot to be the No. 2 RB for the Lions behind Best, and we think he remains the best handcuff option. Should Best go down with a serious injury then the Lions would likely go with a backfield by committee, but we would spend a late-round pick on Morris if you draft Best early this year.
News: RBs Jerome Harrison and Aaron Brown alternated reps as Detroit's second-team back Thursday behind starter Jahvid Best. With Maurice Morris (hand) still not in the mix, Harrison and Brown's chances to make the roster have improved. The odd man out in drills appears to be Mike Bell, who's now splitting backfield reps with WR/RB Stefan Logan.
Analysis: We still think Morris is the safest guy to pick in Fantasy drafts, albeit very late. Harrison has potential but we haven't seen it in preseason games. Brown has shown some moves in preseason games but has an ugly history in the pros. And remember, Morris is who will eventually take on the backup role behind Best. None of the guys are worth a late-round pick like Morris.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris was ruled out for Friday's preseason opener against Cincinnati. Morris has been dealing with a hand injury.
Analysis: Morris is expected to open the season as the No. 2 RB in Detroit behind Jahvid Best now that Mykel Leshoure is out for the season with a torn Achilles' tendon. Keep an eye on Morris' health, and he is worth drafting with a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: With the news that Lions rookie RB Mikel Leshoure has a torn Achilles' tendon and will miss the 2011 season, veteran RB Maurice Morris is expected to climb the depth chart and have a shot at some weekly playing time. Morris had a significant role in the second half of the Lions' offense last season and racked up 79 carries for 326 yards and five touchdowns with 18 catches for 116 yards in that span.
Analysis: Morris is dealing with a fractured hand and isn't practicing, but he is expected to be OK for the start of the season and be in the flow of the Lions' offense. With an expectation of roughly 12 touches per game, he's not bad as a low-end No. 3 RB in deeper leagues and as a quality reserve in standard formats. The idea of drafting Best with a fourth-round pick and Morris with a late-round pick is a fairly good one.
News: According to the team's official website, Lions RB Maurice Morris did not practice on Wednesday due to a fractured hand suffered in Tuesday's practice. Coach Jim Schwartz said the injury is not overly serious. Hes got a little crack in his hand no surgery or anything like that," said Schwartz. "Being a ball carrier, its important to be able to protect the ball. The one thing is: we dont have a lot of contact now, but a lot of our guys are slapping at the ball and things like. We want to avoid it getting hit for a little while, but theres really nothing to be concerned about."
Analysis: This is not great news for Morris, who will be competing with rookie Mikel Leshoure for touches this preseason. Jahvid Best and Leshoure are likely to be the Lions' top running backs as long as they are healthy, but Morris proved in 2010 that he can step up in the event he is needed. He will be worth little more than a late-round flier pick in drafts.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris injured his hand on Tuesday while doing individual drills in training camp. He left practice and didn't return. "He didn't finish, obviously," coach Jim Schwartz said. "We'll still do some tests in there."
Analysis: The addition of rookie Mikel Leshoure means Morris has another body to contend with for carries. Jahvid Best and Leshoure are likely to be the Lions' top running backs as long as they are healthy, but Morris proved in 2010 that he can step up in the event he is needed. It's just that Morris won't need to be owned in Fantasy until he becomes a factor on offense.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris scored a rushing touchdown for the third straight game Week 17 against the Vikings. Morris scored on a 4-yard run with 9:29 left to give the Lions a 10-point cushion that the Vikings couldn't rally from. Morris finished with 21 rushing yards on 12 carries. He also had 24 yards on two catches.
Analysis: Morris rushed for five touchdowns in the last seven games and became a real player for the Lions in the second half. He had to step up when Kevin Smith on IR and Jahvid Best hobbled by a turf toe injury. Morris is an aging veteran that still has some life left in the NFL, but he will never be a featured back again, so he won't have much Fantasy appeal on Draft Day 2011.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris aims to score a rushing touchdown for a third straight game in Week 17 against the Vikings. Minnesota has yielded just eight rushing touchdowns to running backs this season and are allowing RBs to average 13.7 Fantasy points per week, which is sixth lowest in the NFL.
Analysis: Morris had just 5 yards on six carries in Week 3 against the Vikings, but he wasn't in the same role then he is now. With the turf toe injury to Jahvid Best and Kevin Smith going on IR, Morris has become a vital part of the Lions' rushing game. He has at least 10 carries in five of the last six games. He even has four rushing touchdowns in that span. Still, Morris is going to face a very tough rush defense in Week 17, so consider him more of a No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris totaled just 35 yards in a Week 16 win at Miami, but he saved his day with a third-quarter touchdown run. Morris finished with 12 rushes for 22 yards and two catches for 13 yards.
Analysis: The Lions couldn't run much on Sunday against a tough Dolphins front seven, but they did just enough to keep Miami honest and the Detroit defense did the rest. Morris continues to get the majority of carries ahead of rookie RB Jahvid Best in Detroit, and will likely shoulder the load again in Week 17 vs. Minnesota. Consider Morris a low-end flex option at best.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (chest) was not named among the inactives for Week 16 at Miami. Morris has tallied at least 40 yards from scrimmage in each of his five games and is coming off a 109-yard outing against Tampa Bay in Week 15.
Analysis: Morris returned to practice the last few days, but so has rookie Jahvid Best. If both are healthy for Sunday's game, they should split carries against a tough Miami run defense. Both will be needed to help draw attention from receivers, particularly superstar WR Calvin Johnson. The Dolphins have been stingy against the run this season and have yielded just 14.6 Fantasy points per game to opposing running backs while not allowing a rusher to reach 100 yards in their last five games. Consider Morris a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option in Week 16.
News: After missing practice earlier in the week with chest injury, Lions RB Maurice Morris practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day on Friday. He is listed as probable for Week 16 against the Dolphins. Morris has tallied at least 40 yards from scrimmage in each of his five games and is coming off a 109-yard outing against Tampa Bay in Week 15.

News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris (ankle) returned to practice Thursday as a limited participant while the Lions prepared for their Week 16 matchup at Miami. Morris, who has emerged as Detroit's primary running back but did not practice Wednesday, said he will play Sunday. Im just excited to get back out there and help the team, he said. Morris has tallied at least 40 yards from scrimmage in each of his five games and is coming off a 109-yard outing against Tampa Bay in Week 16.
Analysis: Morris, one of the most important Lions players to return to practice Thursday, will need another solid performance to help draw attention from receivers, particularly superstar WR Calvin Johnson. The Dolphins have been stingy against the run this season and have yielded just 14.6 Fantasy points per game to opposing running backs while not allowing a rusher to reach 100 yards in their last five games. Consider Morris a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option in Week 16.
News: Coming off the team's first 100-yard rushing performance of the season, Lions RB Maurice Morris (chest) sat out of Wednesday's practice. The Lions take on the Dolphins in Week 16.
Analysis: Morris has surpassed Jahvid Best as the Lions' primary running back, and he didn't appear to suffer any setbacks with the ongoing chest issue in the win. We see the move as a precautionary one as of right now. When healthy, Morris should be considered to be a flex option in Fantasy play.
News: For the fourth time over the last five games, Lions RB Maurice Morris carried the ball at least ten times, and he responded with his first 100-yard rushing game of the year, as Detroit beat Tampa Bay, 23-20, in overtime in Week 15. Morris ran the ball 15 times for 109 yards and also made three catches for another 10 yards. His 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Lions a 17-14 lead that held up until a Buccaneers field goal with just under nine minutes left in the game.
Analysis: Morris has surpassed Jahvid Best as the Lions' primary running back, and he took advantage of the additional carries and a weak Tampa Bay rush defense to have a big day. He probably won't have things so easy in Week 16, when Detroit travels to Miami, so consider Morris as more of a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option for this upcoming matchup.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris was listed as active for Week 15 at Tampa Bay. He was limited in practice all week with a chest injury, but is ready to play, as expected.
Analysis: Morris has to split carries with Jahvid Best and Stefan Logan, so expect him to continue his modest production from the last two weeks. He is more of a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option for Week 15.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (chest) was limited in practice all week as the team prepares for Week 15 against the Bucs. He is listed as probable for the matchup, and should again be the lead back ahead of the hobbled Jahvid Best (toe). Morris hasn't scored since finding the end zone twice on Thanksgiving against the Patriots.
Analysis: Since the Lions didn't express concern over Morris' injury, it doesn't appear he is in jeopardy of sitting out Sunday. Morris has alternated between racking up around 30 or 50 rushing yards in his last four games. By that trend he is expected to finish in the 30-yard range in Week 15. However, the Bucs are allowing RBs to average 20.8 Fantasy points per week, which is eighth highest in the NFL. Still, Morris shares time in the backfield with Jahvid Best and now Stefan Logan. He is more of a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option for Week 15.

News: For the second time in three weeks, Maurice Morris got the nod as the Lions' starting RB over Jahvid Best, and he responded with a team-leading 51 yards in Week 14. He rushed the ball 11 times and also made a six-yard catch during the 7-3 win over the Packers. Morris did not have a run longer than eight yards, but he managed a 4.6 yards per carry average on the afternoon.
Analysis: With Best continuing to deal with his toe injury and diminished production, the Lions could look to Morris more in the season's final weeks. That could be especially true if inexperienced Drew Stanton continues to start as the team's quarterback. That gives Morris a little extra value, but ultimately, he is not an advisable start in standard leagues.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris may play a prominent role in the running game in Week 14 against the Packers. RB Jahvid Best missed practice on Wednesday due to his toe injury, so Morris may have another chance to get double-digit carries. He has not had much success against Green Bay in the past, amassing only 49 all-purpose yards in two previous games. The Packers enter Week 14 having allowed the fourth-fewest Fantasy points to opposing running backs.
Analysis: Even if Morris gets a large share of the touches against the Packers, the matchup does not bode well for him. At best, he can be used in the deepest of formats, and that's only if Best is still hurt by Sunday. Otherwise, he should not start in any format.
News: Lions RB Jahvid Best was not expected to be the top rusher for Detroit in the Week 13 game against the Bears. In fact, the Lions came out and said Maurice Morris would get the bulk of the touches. However, Morris carried 10 times for 37 yards, one more carry than Best received. Best ran nine times, but totaled 65 yards. He had a long carry of 45 yards and broke several long runs in the game, looking very healthy and explosive. Best also caught one pass for 32 yards. Morris could only make one catch for 3 yards and was only targeted once in the game.
Analysis: The Lions came out and said Morris would get the bulk of the work prior to Week 13. They must have thought Best wasn't as healthy as he looked. Once Best started rolling, it was obvious he was the preferred option in the running game. If Best remains healthy through the practice week, Morris is not going to be worth starting Week 14 against the Packers in any Fantasy leagues.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris will get the bulk of the rushing touches Week 13 against the Bears, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. RB Jahvid Best practiced all week, but Bests turf toe injury continues to hamper him. Morris had 75 yards total offense and two touchdowns against New England on Thanksgiving.
Analysis: Morris only rushed twice for minus-3 yards in the Week 1 game in Chicago. However, he wasn't nearly a part of the offense at that point with Best healthy. The Lions' RB situation is a bit of a mess, but it sounds like Morris is the best option heading into the game against the Bears. Unfortunately, that means little against one of the best defenses around. The Bears haven't allowed an opposing RB to score or top 53 rushing yards in three straight games. Morris should be considered just a No. 3 Fantasy RB, at best, for Week 13. It doesn't help that Drew Stanton will be making his first start of the season at QB, so who knows if he can make Chicago avoid stacking the box against the run and respect the pass.
News: While Jahvid Best is still a question mark to play in Week 13 against the Bears, Lions RB Maurice Morris is ready to build upon his best performance of the season. Morris entered last week's game against the Patriots expecting to split touches with Best and Aaron Brown. Brown saw the most touches but Morris made the most noise with two rushing touchdowns among his nine carries for 55 yards. Morris averaged 6.1 yards per carry last week against New England.
Analysis: Morris only rushed twice for minus-3 yards in the Week 1 game in Chicago. He wasn't nearly a part of the offense that point, however, with both Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best around. Week 13 might have the Lions without both of those guys, at least. Morris proved valuable last week, especially at the goal line.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris wound up starting and leading the Lions in rushing yards vs. the Patriots on Thanksgiving, getting 55 yards on nine carries with two 1-yard touchdown runs. Morris also had 20 yards receiving on five catches. Going into the game it was believed that Morris would split reps with Jahvid Best, but instead it was Aaron Brown who came in and led the Lions in rushes (13), but contributed just 36 yards.
Analysis: Morris exceeded all expectations by cashing in from the goal line twice against the Patriots, though the 75 total yards was certainly possible given that he was splitting reps. Our only question: Why did the Lions give more work to the ineffective Brown instead of Morris? The sledding only gets tougher for the Lions as the Bears come to Ford Field in Week 13, and their run defense is among the best in the league (though Jahvid Best did score twice on them in Week 1). Not only must Morris deal with the matchup, but there's still concern over his workload and whether he'll be sharing it with Best, Brown, or both. He's worth adding to rosters but not necessarily starting in Week 13.
News:Maurice Morris will end up sharing reps with rookie RB Jahvid Best in Thursday's game vs. the Patriots. Best was on the injury report leading up to the game but was made active for the Lions' annual home game on Thanksgiving. Best was listed as the Lions' starter on their official web site but Morris took the first rep and played on all but one of Detroit's first eight plays.
Analysis: Morris is only good to use as a low-end desperation option in Week 12. He might total 50 or 60 yards; running backs have totaled a good amount of yards against the Patriots of late.
News: With Lions RB Jahvid Best (toe) probable for the team's Thursday afternoon game vs. the Patriots, it's expected that the club will utilize three running backs: Best, fullback Jerome Felton and veteran Maurice Morris. Morris, however, is expected to start. The Lions face a Patriots run defense that has given up just five touchdowns on the ground but three to running backs through the air. Additionally, the Pats are yielding at least 120 total yards to running backs in all but one of their games after Week 1. The Colts' backs tallied 135 yards on them just last Sunday.
Analysis: Because Morris is sharing reps with potentially two other backs, his outlook isn't very good. Consider him worth a reserve spot in Fantasy this week so long as you can help it. If Best's toe problem worsens, and it could given that he's trying to play through it, then Morris would see the biggest bump in carries and catches.
News: The Detroit Free Press reports that Lions RB Maurice Morris should start on Thursday against the Patriots ahead of Jahvid Best (toe).
Analysis: Morris ran 10 times for 31 yards and had 40 yards receiving in Week 11, and he could see plenty more touches on Turkey Day against the Patriots, who don't have an elite run defense by any means. If Morris does indeed get the nod as the starter, then he would be worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option against the Patriots.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris led Detroit in touches Sunday in Week 11 at Dallas with 10 carries for 31 yards. He also added four catches for 40 yards. Morris saw an increased role with Kevin Smith (thumb) on injured reserve, and he was more involved than Jahvid Best, who was dealing with the toe injury. Best finished with three carries for 2 yards and four catches for 15 yards. Morris had six targets, and Best only had five.
Analysis: Morris is worth looking at to add off the waiver wire since Best has been limited with the injury, and the Lions have a short week in Week 12 against New England on Thanksgiving Day. Morris is only owned in 4 percent of leagues on CBSSports.com, so consider adding him where available. If he gets the nod as the starter then he would be worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy RB or flex option against the Patriots.
News: With Saturday's news that Lions running back Kevin Smith (thumb) has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, Maurice Morris will take over the primary backup role to rookie Jahvid Best in Detroit, according to the Free Press. Morris, who has just 11 rushing attempts this season (all in the first three games), was mainly being used on special teams. The Lions travel to Dallas in Week 11.
Analysis: With Smith done for the season and Best (toe) missing practice on consecutive days this week, Morris could possibly see a decent number of carries in Week 11. Though he has just 10 rushing yards this season, Dallas possesses the league's 23rd-ranked run defense and has allowed four consecutive opponents to rush for more than 100 yards. Consider Morris a borderline emergency replacement for Week 11 in Fantasy leagues.
News: With RB Jahvid Best (toe) missing practice for a second straight day Thursday and RB Kevin Smith (thumb) already ruled out, it looks like RB Maurice Morris might have a good chance to start in Week 11 against Dallas, who have the league's 23rd-ranked run defense.
Analysis: Morris has 10 rushing yards on 11 carries this season, but hasn't run the ball since Week 3. Don't forget, though, that Morris ran for 126 yards in Week 15 against the Cardinals last season, so he's no slouch on occasion. He would only be worth using as a last-resort flex option in deeper formats, however.
News: The Detroit News reports that Lions RB Maurice Morris will likely start in Week 4 if impressive rookie RB Jahvid Best can't shake his toe injury. Kevin Smith should also see some carries. "The last time Maurice started a game he had over 100 yards rushing," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "There is also a possibility of Kevin. He's been working hard and I am sure he's going to be in the mix. We are counting on that being a big possibility."
Analysis: Morris filled in for Best last Sunday, but only managed 5 yards on six carries against the Vikings. Things might get a little easier in Week 4 against a Packers team that hasn't been great against the run this season, but Morris will certainly be just a low-end emergency bye-week replacement flex option if Best isn't healthy enough to play.
News: Detroit Lions rookie running back Jahvid Best left Sunday's game at Minnesota with pain in his right big toe in the third quarter and didn't return. Maurice Morris saw a majority of touches out of the backfield for the Lions the rest of the way, but he finished with only 5 yards on six carries. He caught five passes, however, and finished with 36 yards.
Analysis: In the second half, the Lions were not in a situation to run the ball because they were behind by a couple of touchdowns. Morris saw a lot of passes out of the backfield (he was targeted seven times) and is a player that Fantasy owners may want to take a flier on off the waiver wire early in Week 4 because he'd be in line for the majority of touches in Week 4 at Green Bay if Best can't go. We don't think it's a particularly great matchup, but Morris could have some appeal in larger leagues as a bye-week replacement.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris totaled three carries for 8 yards in a Week 2 loss to the Eagles. His longest carry went for 5 yards and he wasn't targeted in the passing game.
Analysis: Morris battling with Aaron Brown for backup carries to Jahvid Best until Kevin Smith (knee) is healthy. We don't expect Morris to get more than a few touches per week, which severely limits his Fantasy appeal. Ignore him heading into Week 3 against the Vikings.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris had two carries for minus-3 yards and two catches for 18 yards Sunday at Chicago. Morris got increased playing time with Kevin Smith ruled inactive for this game, and he helped backup rookie RB Jahvid Best.
Analysis: Morris has minimal Fantasy value as long as Best is healthy. Ignore Morris in the majority of leagues heading into Week 2 at the Eagles.
News: Lions RB Aaron Brown has surged ahead in the battle for the third RB spot with his second-half performance Saturday against the Browns. Brown had five carries for 34 yards and two scores, and he also added one catch for 16 yards. Brown is reading defenses much better this season and has eliminated the mental errors that plagued him last year, and he has likely moved ahead of Maurice Morris for the role behind Jahvid Best and Kevin Smith. "It was probably his best complete game as a running back," Schwartz said. "I'd like to see him get a little bit more aggressive on some of his returns, but (he also) did a nice job in the passing game." Brown had four kickoff returns for 96 yards. Morris, meanwhile, had two carries for 4 yards and one catch for 5 yards. I was out there on special teams every little thing I was trying to get away from last year, Im trying to show them Im the kind of player they believed (me to be) last year," Brown said.
Analysis: Morris could be in danger of being released if Brown continues to play like this. Continue to monitor what develops with the RB corps behind Best and Smith, but Morris has minimal Fantasy value even if he's the No. 3 RB. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris got increased reps during Wednesday's minicamp with the second-team offense behind starter Jahvid Best. Morris looks to be in good shape but may be the odd man out in the backfield with the return of Kevin Smith (knee) and the impressive progress of Best. Smith participated in seven-on-seven drills for the first time Wednesday.
Analysis: We've heard differing reports on Smith's recovery, and he could open the season on the PUP list. That could mean Morris is the No. 2 RB in Detroit to open the season, and he's worth a late-round flier in all leagues if Smith is out. Keep an eye on what happens with Smith, and put Morris on your list of deep sleepers on Draft Day.
News: According to mlive.com, Lions RB Kevin Smith, who is recovering from the major knee injury he suffered last December, has been running well and taking part in individual drills in offseason workouts, but he's still a long way from being cleared to play contact football. The Lions will likely put him on the PUP list to start training camp and then evaluate him along with the way. The report also speculates that it's possible Smith might be inactive for the first six weeks of the regular season while the Lions go with Jahvid Best and Maurice Morris in the backfield. And when Smith returns, he will likely be used in a reserve role behind Best.
Analysis: Morris could find himself as the No. 2 RB in Detroit if Smith is limited in training camp. Continue to monitor what happens with Smith, but Morris could be worth a late-round flier as a handcuff option to Best. Remember, Best has plenty of upside, but he's still a rookie and was injury prone in college. That could allow Morris to see additional carries in 2010.
News: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, in a column comparing rookie running backs Jahvid Best of the Lions and Toby Gerhart of the Vikings, reports Best will be the starter in Detroit this season because Kevin Smith won't be ready to play this year coming off his torn ACL. The writer, Mark Craig, says "I was talking to someone close to the situation recently and was told Smith might not be 100 percent until 2011, if ever." If that's true, that would mean Best will open the season sharing carries with Maurice Morris with Best as the featured option. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said at the rookie minicamp they need Best to be ready as soon as possible, which could indicate Smith's injury is worse than previously indicated. "We're throwing everything we have at him. We didn't spoon-feed it," Schwartz said of Best. "He's a guy that when he does come back, he has to assimilate right away into the offense. We can't slow the offense down for where he is. We moved him around a lot and exposed him to a lot of things. I thought he did a really good job of handling it."
Analysis: Smith said following the NFL Draft that he was able to run routes, getting in and out of breaks and participating in handoffs and other individual drills, but that "I probably won't be doing anything major for a while." He also added that "camp time is my goal." We probably won't know Smith's status until the start of training camp, but this report could severel y ruin his Fantasy value and help Best, especially if Smith ! is out f or the season. Continue to monitor what develops, and hopefully Smith will prove that he's ready in 2010. If he's healthy, Smith will likely share carries with Best and both running backs would be considered No. 3 Fantasy options. But if Smith is out for the season then Best would be a solid No. 2 Fantasy RB, and Morris would also be worth drafting with a late-round pick.
News: Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best wants to earn a position as a starter this season, reports mlive.com. "I understand there's a lot of potential I have to play, but I just have to come in and do the best I can and help the team to win. Things should go great," Best said Sunday. "There's a running back by committee, so we can all get it done. I've just got to play my part." While Best is expected to be the feature back, he understands it's more than a one-man show. To start the season, he likely will share carries with Maurice Morris. When Kevin Smith returns 100 percent from a knee injury, he's expected to split time with Best. In both cases, Best likely will get the bulk of the workload.
Analysis: It's clear Morris is the No. 3 RB at best for the Lions behind Best to start the season and eventually Smith when healthy. Morris is worth a late-round pick in deep leagues, but he has minimal Fantasy value coming into the season, especially if Smith is ready in Week 1.
News: With the Lions' drafting Cal RB Jahvid Best, it is believed that Maurice Morris will serve as a backup to him until third-year rusher Kevin Smith comes back from a knee injury. At that point Morris will be relegated to a third-string role.
Analysis: Morris won't see much playing time in Detroit now that he's behind two backs on paper, so keep him out of your Fantasy plans. If he regains some regular reps, he'd be a consideration as a one-week replacement option.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris ran 16 times for 65 yards and caught five passes for 41 yards in a Week 17 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Morris finished with a couple of decent outings late in the season as he filled in for the injured Kevin Smith. Morris is signed through 2011 with the Lions, so he'll likely be back next season as Smith's backup. He will only be drafted in the deepest of Fantasy formats this summer.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris struggled carrying the rock on Sunday in a Week 16 loss at San Francisco. Morris was given 18 carries in the game, gaining only 37 yards. His longest carry in the contest went for only 9 yards. He also made four receptions in the game for 29 yards.
Analysis: Morris continues to start in place of Kevin Smith who is out for the season. He was impressive against Arizona in Week 15, gaining 126 yards on 17 carries. He has a better matchup in Week 17 against the Bears, which is near the bottom of the league in run defense. Think of Morris as a serviceable No. 3 Fantasy RB for that game.
News: In the Lions' Week 15 loss vs. the Cardinals, RB Maurice Morris turned out to be a bright spot. He had 126 rush yards on 17 carries including a 64-yard touchdown run. He also caught five passes for 35 yards.
Analysis: Morris did well against a good Cardinals run defense, but he'll run into another buzz saw in Week 16 at San Francisco (their run defense is solid). Morris might have a little familiarity with that defense from his days in Seattle, and he'll surely get at least 15 touches in the matchup. He should be considered a No. 3 Fantasy RB for his upcoming matchup.
News: Lions head coach Jim Schwartz confirmed Monday that RB Kevin Smith will have season-ending knee surgery after tearing at least one ligament at Baltimore in Week 14. Maurice Morris took his reps following the injury and is expected to split reps with rookie Aaron Brown going forward.
Analysis: Morris and Brown aren't worth starting and are barely worth owning in Fantasy play. Morris is expected to be slightly more valuable because he'll see more work, but with a stiff matchup vs. the Cardinals in Week 15 neither guy should be counted on. They may not put up decent stats until Week 17 at Chicago.
News: MLive.com reports that Detroit RB Kevin Smith, who suffered a left knee injury week 14 against the Ravens, will miss the rest of the season and could be a question mark going into training camp in 2010. Coach Jim Schwartz termed the injury "significant". If there is ligament damage, the surgery smith would be required to have would likely have him start next year's training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Smith carried the ball 22 times for 69 yards and caught two passes for 19 yards. Aaron Brown and Maurice Morris replaced Smith when he was injured. Morris finished the game with three carries for 11 yards and two receptions for 9 yards. Brown had one carry for 12 yards.
Analysis: Smith injured himself after catching a pass then making a move on a defender. He went down immediately and had to be carted off the field. "I tried to stop-and-start and got my foot stuck in the field," Smith said, adding that he never felt pain like that before. "Never in my life." Smith can be but in all seasonal formats and should only be held on to in long-term dynasty leagues. Morris and Brown can be picked up but we think that the veteran Morris will get more of the touches. Smith's draft status in 2010 will also be affected by how long this injury keeps him out for.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris did not get a carry Week 13 but did catch one pass for 11 yards against the Bengals.
Analysis: Morris does not typically get enough stats to be worth using in any Fantasy format. Leave him off all rosters for Week 14 at Baltimore.
News: Playing on Thanksgiving vs. the Packers, Lions RB Maurice Morris had 4 rush yards and 16 receiving yards.
Analysis: Morris doesn't produce enough stats to warrant use in Fantasy. Keep him off of standard rosters. The Lions play at the Bengals in Week 13.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris got two carries on Sunday in a Week 11 win over the Browns. He gained a total of 5 yards backing up Kevin Smith.
Analysis: This is about all that Fantasy owners can expect from Morris on a week-to-week basis. He is not a recommended option for Week 12 against the Packers on Thanksgiving but can be owned as a handcuff for Smith.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris had six carries for 10 yards and one catch for 4 yards Sunday at Minnesota.
Analysis: Morris is the No. 2 RB for the Lions behind Kevin Smith. He has minimal Fantasy value and should not be used in any leagues in Week 11 against Cleveland.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris got only four carries on Sunday in a Week 9 loss to the Seahawks. He gained only 20 yards, with a long of 7 yards. He also caught two passes in the game for a total of 17 yards.
Analysis: Morris is currently owned in 18 percent of leagues as a handcuff for Kevin Smith who has been battling a shoulder injury. He will not be a recommended option outside of the deepest of formats for Week 10 at Minnesota.
News: Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he was "optimistic" that RB Kevin Smith would play in Sunday's game at Seattle after he suffered a shoulder injury last week vs. the Rams, according to the Detroit News. Smith sat out practice on Wednesday but did work on Thursday and Friday. He's expected to start and lose a handful of carries to backup Maurice Morris.
Analysis: Morris is only worth using as a low-end desperation option in Week 9 against his former team. He'll likely see around 10 total touches. Keep him reserved if you can.
News: Lions RB Kevin Smith, who left the St. Louis game in Week 8 with a left shoulder injury, did not practice Wednesday. His status for Sunday's game against the Seahawks is unknown. Smith injured his right shoulder earlier in the season but did not miss a game.
Analysis: If Smith is unable to play against the Seahawks then Maurice Morris would get the start. Seattle is No. 10 in run defense at just over 101 yards per game allowed with six touchdowns, so Smith would be a No. 2 Fantasy RB if healthy. Continue to monitor his progress and hope he's 100 percent for this game.
News: The Detroit Free-Press reports that Lions RB Kevin Smith remains the team's featured back, according to head coach Jim Schwartz. Smith and backup Maurice Morris split carries last week against the Rams because Smith left the game with a shoulder injury that doesn't appear to be serious (Schwartz didn't address it). Smith has disappointed a little bit as he's amassed 393 yards on 125 carries (3.1 avg.) with three touchdowns and 24 catches for 198 yards (8.3 avg.). Morris has just 106 yards on 26 carries (4.1 avg.) with one rushing touchdown, and just 48 yards on four catches (12.0 avg.) Schwartz intends to still use both backs. "It was always the thought that we were going to use two running backs," Schwartz said. "Kevin is our workhorse running back, getting most of the carries. But we always had in the plan that Maurice was going to carry balls in the game. His health hasn't allowed that every single week."
Analysis: Smith is getting plenty of touches, and that keeps his value high in Fantasy play. Keep him active, but do it as a middle- to low-end No. 2 RB in Week 9 against the Seahawks. As for Morris, he'll carry a little bit of value this week since there are several running backs on bye and he'll see a few touches. Consider him a low-end No. 3 option in deeper leagues for Week 9 when he goes up against his former team.
News: Because of Kevin Smith's shoulder problems, he and Maurice Morris split time in the backfield against the Rams in Week 8, but coach Jim Schwartz said that isn't the plan going forward. "Kevin is our workhorse running back, and he's going to get most of the carries," he said. "We've always wanted to get Maurice some work. That's the case everywhere. As great as Adrian Peterson is, Chester Taylor gets a lot of carries. We don't see this as a 50-50 split, but in this game, injuries kind of pushed us to that."
Analysis: Looks like Smith will be fine for Week 9 at Seattle, so Morris is nothing more than a handcuff option for Fantasy owners. He had a decent performance, rushing 14 times for 63 yards, but he won't have a chance to repeat those numbers unless Smith's injury ends up more serious than expected.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris was pressed into action in Week 8 against the Rams after Kevin Smith went down with a shoulder injury. He carried the ball 14 times in the game, gaining a total of 63 yards. He also caught one pass that went for 19 yards.
Analysis: Morris could be in for a significant upgrqade in terms of Fantasy value if Smith's injury is going to keep him sidelined for a while. He might be worth picking up if he is expected to get the start in Week 9 at Seattle as the Seahawks have a mediocre run defense. Morris is usually just a handcuff for Smith.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris, RB Terrelle Smith and TE Casey Fitzsimmons all did not record stats in the team's Week 6 game against the Packers.
Analysis: Fitzsimmons is a low-end tight end with the Lions and these other two players have little to no Fantasy relevance. Fitzsimmons won't play Week 7 as the Lions are on the bye. The team plays St. Louis in Week 8.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris was able to participate in practice in a limited fashion on Friday as the team prepares for its Week 6 game at Green Bay. He had not been able to practice on Wednesday or Thursday. Morris is dealing with a hip injury and is considered questionable for Week 6 at Green Bay.
Analysis: Morris has been good for around 20-30 yards per game so far this season in the games he has gotten into. That's about all Fantasy owners can expect out of him in Week 6 if he is able to play as well. As long as Kevin Smith is healthy, he will see a limited role.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris rushed one time for five yards in Week 5 against Pittsburgh. He also caught one pass for 16 yards.
Analysis: Morris has been good around 20-30 per game so far in the games he has played this season. Unless that is appealing yo you, leave him reserved in all Fantasy leagues. As long as Kevin Smith is healthy, he will see a limited role.
News: Lions backup RB Maurice Morris had one carry for 13 yards and one catch for 1 yard Sunday at Chicago.
Analysis: Morris didn't play much with Kevin Smith healthy despite a shoulder injury prior to the game. Morris will only see action if Smith ever misses time, and that's not expected to happen in Week 5 against the Steelers. Ignore Morris in Week 5.
News: With Kevin Smith vowing to play for the Lions after practicing for the second straight day on Friday, backup running backs Maurice Morris and Aaron Brown are now expected to resume their backup duties behind him.
Analysis: Morris and Brown might see one or two more touches each to help take some extra carries off of Smith, but consider both running backs unlikely to help Fantasy owners much in Week 4.
News: Lions head coach Jim Schwartz told the Chicago media on Wednesday that RB Kevin Smith will be a game-time decision for their Week 4 matchup against the Bears. Smith hurt his shoulder in the second half of last week's win over the Redskins. He had rushed for 101 yards before getting hurt. Maurice Morris took the first-team reps in his place and would likely see the bulk of the carries with rookie Aaron Brown if Smith missed the game. "We will just see how that plays out this week and see what we can get out of him and make a game-time decision on whether he can go or not," Schwartz said of Smith, according to the Chicago Tribune. "But Kevin is really important. We have a dynamic playmaker in Calvin Johnson who can get open downfield, but that is largely dependent on how we run the football and Kevin is a big part of that."
Analysis: If Smith remains a game-time call this week, we're going to have to wait until Sunday morning to get the official word on Smith's status. That will require owners to get the word first from Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com. If you own Smith and are counting on him, now is the time to go and get Maurice Morris off waivers just in case he ends up starting. Aaron Brown would be no better than a low-end desperation addition. We will keep you posted on Smith's status throughout the week.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris rushed for 10 yards on eight carries but scored a touchdown in Week 3's win over the Redskins. Morris scampered for a 2-yard TD run in the 4th quarter. He added one catch for 12 yards.
Analysis: Morris has just 10 rushing attempts on the season for 25 yards and Sunday marked his first catch. He's not used a lot in an offense that isn't exactly high-scoring. Leave him on waivers for Week 4 at Chicago's tough defense.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris had two carries for 15 yards during a Week 2 loss to the Vikings. His longest gainer went for 8 yards. It was his first carries of the season.
Analysis: Morris is pulling backup duty to Kevin Smith in Detroit, but the Lions have made it pretty clear that they intend to be a one-man show in the backfield. Morris will only gain significant Fantasy value in the event something happens to Smith. He has little to no Fantasy appeal heading into Week 3 against the Redskins.
News: Lions backup RB Maurice Morris was active in Week 1 at the Saints, but did not play.
Analysis: As long as Kevin Smith remains healthy, he is expected to see the majority of the touches in the running game for Detroit. Keep Morris stashed away in deeper leagues, but don't count on using him for now.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris returned to action on Saturday against the Colts after missing the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury. Morris took the ball seven times and finished with 19 rushing yards.
Analysis: Morris is a solid late-round Fantasy flier because starter Kevin Smith isn't exactly proven just yet in his young career. The Lions will likely use Morris in different roles to keep Smith fresh.
News: Lions RB Maurice Morris (hamstring) sat out his second straight preseason game Saturday as Detroit fell to the Browns.
Analysis: Morris is a good late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues because Smith is unproven as a starter, and the Lions will likely use Morris in different roles to keep Smith fresh. The only thing worth keeping an eye on with Morris is that he's 100 percent healthy.
News: Detroit RB Maurice Morris sat out of Saturday's preseason game against the Falcons with a hamstring injury. He is considered questionable for the team's upcoming game against the Browns.
Analysis: Morris should be considered a good late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues because Kevin Smith is unproven as a starter, and the Lions will likely use Morris to do a number of things in order to keep Smith fresh. Keep an eye on his health over the preseason but take him as a low-end flier and handcuff option for Smith.
News: According to a report, Lions RB Maurice Morris has a hamstring injury and might not play in Saturday's preseason opener against Atlanta, said mlive.com. Morris is expected to be the No. 2 RB in Detroit behind starter Kevin Smith.
Analysis: Morris is a good late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues because Smith is unproven as a starter, and the Lions will likely use Morris in different roles to keep Smith fresh. The only thing worth keeping an eye on with Morris is that he's 100 percent healthy.
News: According to a report, Lions RB Maurice Morris will make a good backup to starter Kevin Smith. Morris, an eight-year veteran, has done well as a backup in Seattle, said mlive.com. The Lions brought in Morris an unrestricted free agent this offseason to be the backup to Smith, who will carry the bulk of the workload.
Analysis: Morris doesn't have great breakaway speed -- in 604 career carries he has just 15 carries of 20 yards or more -- but he's extremely versatile and can fill any role in which the Lions need him. Morris is also a very good receiver out of the backfield so don't be surprised to see him in the backfield at the same time with Smith. Morris is a good late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues because Smith is unproven as a starter, and the Lions will likely use Morris in different roles to keep Smith fresh.
News: The Detroit Lions have signed running back Maurice Morris to a three-year deal and cornerback Eric King to a two-year contract. The team announced the deals with the free agents on Saturday.
Analysis: Morris rushed for 574 yards and caught 19 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns for Seattle in 2008. He must not have been able to find a better gig than this, which is unfortunate as he's had some flashes of solid play over the course of his career. In deeper leagues, Morris will provide some insurance for those owners who spend a Top-30 pick on Smith, but that's the only place where we'll see him drafted in 2009.
News: NFL Network reports that the Lions have signed free-agent RB Maurice Morris to a three-year deal worth close to $7 million. The former starter in Seattle will aid Kevin Smith in the run game in Motown. Morris will likely be a backup who sees limited reps per game.
Analysis: Morris must not have been able to find a better gig than this, which is unfortunate as he's had some flashes of solid play over the course of his career. In deeper leagues, Morris will provide some insurance for those owners who spend a Top-30 pick on Smith, but that's the only place where we'll see him drafted in 2009.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris led Seahawks rushers with 45 yards on 15 carries in Week 17 in Arizona. He added three catches for 26 yards. Morris finished the season with no rushing touchdowns and 574 rushing yards in 13 games.
Analysis: Morris became the defacto primary back for the Seahawks toward the send of the season and a couple of 100-plus yard games. Otherwise, he was a fairly mediocre back. He is a free agent this offseason and will likely be a backup no matter where he lands in 2009. For Fantasy purposes, he will merely be a handcuff option for whomever he backs up.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had 29 carries in snowy Seattle on Week 16 for 116 yards and a long of 13. The Seahawks shied away from the pass with the poor field conditions caused by the snow and Morris benefited. It was only the second time this season that Morris broke the 100-yard rushing mark this season.
Analysis: The Seahawks take on a Cardinals team Week 17 that appears to have packed it in until playoff time. That could pay huge dividends for Morris next week and his Fantasy value goes up a bit considering the matchup. However, the first Morris took on the Cardinals, he had only three carries for only two yards. Consider him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB for Week 17.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris, who had a total of 49 yards rushing over his previous two games, had 15 carries for 86 yards Week 15 at St. Louis. He continued to outshine Julius Jones, who had four carries for 18 yards.
Analysis: Morris clearly looks like the favored option out of the Seahawks' backfield right now, but he tends to struggle against decent run defenses. He faces one such defense Week 16 against the Jets, so consider him just a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris ran 14 times for 39 yards and caught two passes for 19 yards in a Week 14 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Morris got the bulk of the carries as expected in Week 14, but he ended up being out-rushed by his QB, Seneca Wallace. Morris might have a chance to redeem himself in Week 15 though, as Seattle visit the Rams. Still, he's nothing more than a 'flex' option in deeper Fantasy leagues for the time being.
News: Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said RB Maurice Morris will start Sunday's game against New England, then he'll "sprinkle in" Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett.
Analysis: It sounds like all three will share carries, with Morris getting the first touch, Jones the No. 2 option and Duckett the short-yardage back. For now, ignore all three running backs against the Patriots since there's no guarantee who will get the majority of touches.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had six carries for 10 yards and three catches for 23 yards Thursday at Dallas.
Analysis: Morris is the No. 2 RB for the Seahawks, but he shares time with Julius Jones. Since Morris and Jones are both inconsistent, don't plan on using Morris much going forward, including Week 14 against New England.
News: Seattle running back Julius Jones will start on the road against Dallas in the Thanksgiving Day game in Week 13, four days after being benched. He'll start over Maurice Morris, who gave Seattle its first 100-yard rushing day since Week 3 against Washington last Sunday. Coach Mike Holmgren says he expects Jones to be motivated to play against his former team; the Cowboys dumped him last season. Jones has 637 yards rushing and two touchdowns in 11 games, including nine starts. Jones was a starter while Maurice Morris missed three games with a sprained knee early in the season.
Analysis: Morris has been playing better than Jones, but the truth is that neither running back is starting Fantasy material, especially in this game against the Cowboys' still run defense (98.4 rush yards per game, eight TDs allowed all season). Consider both no better than low-end No. 3 Fantasy RBs, and in the case of Jones, figure that the Cowboys will have a good idea of how to stop him since they know his strengths and weaknesses.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had a big day in Week 12's game against the Redskins at home. Morris rushed 14 times for 103 yards and a long of 44 yards. He added three catches for 10 more yards. Morris did not have a rushing touchdown in the game but did score one through the air as he connected with Matt Hasselbeck in the 2nd quarter on a 4-yard pass.
Analysis: Morris had a total of four carries for 13 yards in the two games before Week 12. He usually is behind Julius Jones on the depth chart but Jones rushed just twice in the game for 21 yards. Jones may have suffered a slight injury in the game and Morris took advantage. Still, until we know what happened to Jones, we won't know how to rate Morris for Week 13 at Dallas on Thursday. Morris is normally not recommended in Fantasy when playing behind Jones.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris had only three carries for two yards during a Week 11 loss to the Cardinals, but found the end zone on a 13-yard screen pass in the second quarter. Morris finished the game with three catches for 27 yards. The screen pass was his first touchdown of the season.
Analysis: Morris continues to fight for touches with Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, and until that changes he doesn't have a lot of Fantasy appeal. He is not a recommended start heading into Week 12 against the Redskins.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris was held to one 11-yard carry and a six-yard catch in a Week 10 loss to Miami.
Analysis: Morris was splitting carries with Julius Jones until this week, but maybe this is a sign that Mike Holmgren is going to give Jones the bulk of the work from now on. Morris is really not worth starting in any formats heading into Week 11 vs. Arizona.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris finished with a team-high 43 rushing yards on eight carries during a Week 9 loss to the Eagles. His longest carry went 28 yards and he didn't record a reception. Morris now has 29 carries for 131 yards and no touchdowns in the four games since returning from a knee injury that kept him out three games.
Analysis: Even with the emergence of Julius Jones, the Seahawks are still splitting carries between him and Morris. They haven't totally forgotten about Morris and neither have 27 precent of Fantasy owners. However, until Morris becomes a featured back, he has marginal Fantasy value. The Seahawks play the Dolphins Week 10.
News: For the first time all season, Seahawks RB Maurice Morris led his team in carries Week 8 at San Francisco, finishing with 11 for only 16 yards. He has no more than 56 yards rushing in any game this season.
Analysis: Morris platoons with Julius Jones and usually gets the lesser share of carries. He has some low-end Fantasy appeal in deeper leagues, but he'll need to contribute more consistent numbers for you to start playing him. The Seahawks host the Eagles in Week 9.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris was the lone bright spot on offense for the Seahawks at Tampa Bay on Sunday. Morris had six carries for 56 yards and two catches for 12 yards. His long run was 45 yards.
Analysis: Morris outplayed starter Julius Jones, who had seven carries for 42 yards. Look for Morris and Jones to continue sharing carries in Week 8 at San Francisco. Morris could be worth adding in leagues since he's only owned in 22 percent of leagues on CBSSports.com.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris rushed four times for 16 yards in Week 6 vs. Green Bay. He also caught two passes for 13 yards.
Analysis: Morris had missed the last three games with a knee injury. But in the two games he has played, he's gotten six touches and that is more or less what Fantasy owners should expect while starter Julius Jones is healthy. For now, he should remain reserved in all Fantasy formats.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) is listed as probable for Week 6 vs. Green Bay. Morris has missed the last three games, but has practiced in full all week and is expected to play Sunday.
Analysis: Julius Jones has prospered in Morris' absence, so even if Morris is active Week 6, he might see limited touches. It's best to leave him reserved in Fantasy.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) went through a full practice Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 6 vs. Green Bay. Morris practiced leading up to Week 5 against the Giants, but was ruled inactive for a third straight game.
Analysis: Morris is on the verge of returning for the Seahawks, but we still don't know when they intend to dress him. Julius Jones has prospered in his absence, so even if Morris is active Week 6, he might see limited touches. It's best to leave him reserved in Fantasy.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) was on the inactive list for Week 5 at the N.Y. Giants. He had been listed as questionable all week on the injury report.
Analysis: While Morris has been sidelined, Julius Jones has become a star running back for Seattle. His emergence will now make it tough for Morris to get carries. Until we see how Seattle works Morris into the gameplan, leave him reserved in Fantasy.
News: The Seahawks listed the following players as inactive for Week 5 at the N.Y. Giants: Charlie Frye (third QB), K Brandon Coutu, WR Koren Robinson, RB Maurice Morris, OL Mansfield Wrotto, DL Red Bryant, WR Courtney Taylor and DL Baraka Atkins.
Analysis: Aside from Koren Robinson possibly down the road and Maurice Morris, none of the players on this list are going to be in line for considerable playing time anytime soon. Leave them on the waiver wire in all Fantasy leagues until further notice. They've got some depth chart climbing to do.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 5 at N.Y. Giants. He went through limited practice reps all week. Morris has not played since Week 1 and has missed the team's last two games.
Analysis: While Morris has been sidelined, Julius Jones has become a star running back for Seattle. His emergence will now make it tough for Morris to get carries. Until we see how Seattle works Morris into the gameplan, leave him reserved in Fantasy for Week 5.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) went through a full practice Wednesday, but scaled back to limited reps Thursday as the team prepares for Week 5 at N.Y. Giants.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) went through a full practice Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 5 at N.Y. Giants. Morris has not played since Week 1 and has missed the team's last two games. He is expected to play Sunday.
Analysis: While Morris has been sidelined, Julius Jones has become a star running back for Seattle. His emergence will now make it tough for Morris to get carries. Until we see how Seattle works Morris into the gameplan, leave him reserved in Fantasy for Week 5.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris was supposed to be back in practice from a sprained knee Monday. But he did not practice, and coach Mike Holmgren said Morris is "a little behind" his expected progress.
Analysis: Morris' delay isn't as concerning now that Julius Jones has had consecutive 100-yard rushing games for the first time since 2006 when he was with Dallas. Even if he returns, he'd be nothing more than a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option as a timeshare back.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have announced the inactives for their Week 3 game vs. the St. Louis Rams. Not in uniform will be: WR Deion Branch, RB Maurice Morris, WR Koren Robinson, WR Bobby Engram, DE Red Bryant, QB Seneca Wallace and K Brandon Coutu.
Analysis: Branch, Morris, Robinson and Engram all have Fantasy value, but they had all been declared out earlier this week or were doubtful. Make sure they're on your bench for Week 3.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (knee) has been ruled out for Week 3 vs. St. Louis. Morris missed his first game Week 2 but might return to action Week 4.
Analysis: Julius Jones did a great job in Morris' absence Week 2, and if he has another strong performance Week 3, that could spell bad news for Morris. Continue to keep Morris reserved in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Seahawks running back Maurice Morris will miss at least the next two games with a sprained knee. He's been officially ruled out for Week 2 against the 49ers.
Analysis: Morris' job as a starter was never really a permanent one as Mike Holmgren said he would reward whichever running back was performing better. Morris had six carries for 31 yards before leaving Sunday's game. It doesn't sound as this will be a long-term injury, but the fact is that Jones gets a chance to shine in Morris' absence. Morris still has Fantasy value when healthy, but keep him reserved until further notice.
News: Seahawks running back Maurice Morris will miss at least the next two games with a sprained knee. Former Dallas lead runner Julius Jones will start Week 2 against the 49ers.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris left Seattle's Week 1 loss to the Bills with a knee injury early in the third quarter. Before getting hurt, Morris had run six games for 31 yards.
Analysis: Morris' job as a starter was never really a permanent one as Mike Holmgren said he would reward whichever running back was performing better. Depending on the severity of this injury, Morris could lose his spot to Julius Jones after one week, although neither RB was particularly impressive in Sunday's loss. Keep an eye on this situation heading into Week 2's game against the 49ers.
News: NFL.com reports that Maurice Morris, and not Julius Jones, will start at running back Sunday for the Seahawks in Week 1 at Buffalo. Morris and Jones, though, will split the majority of the carries. "Before, you had our fullback Mack Strong, and Shaun, and if they weren't tired, or hurt, that's who was going to be in the ball game. The big difference will be the substitution," head coach Mike Holmgren said. He said said he still doesn't know exactly how he is going to handle the running back situation, but he did hint that Jones could start in Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Analysis: Go into Week 1 with Morris as a No. 3 option and Jones as a reserve Fantasy RB this week. Holmgren has said in the past that he will lean toward using whichever runner proves to have more success early in the game. Jones' stock has fallen coming into the year, and he needs to prove himself before Fantasy owners can count on him at this point.
News: The News Tribune reports Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said that Maurice Morris will start at running back in Week 1 at Buffalo over Julius Jones, whom the team signed as a free agent, though he said both players are expected to share the workload. Morris has been Shaun Alexander's backup since he was drafted out of Oregon and has started intermittently when Alexander suffered various injuries. This will be the first time he has been given the starting job on his own merit. Holmgren has not indicated exactly how he plans on splitting the carries between Morris and Jones, though he has said in the past that he will lean toward using whichever one proves to have more success early in the game.
Analysis: Go into Week 1 with Morris as a No. 3 option and Jones as a reserve Fantasy RB this week. Jones' stock has fallen coming into the year, and he needs to prove himself before Fantasy owners can count on him at this point.
News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that all the Seattle running backs will play in Week 1 at Buffalo, meaning Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett will get carries. "Julius and I understand our situation," said Morris, Shaun Alexander's backup the past six seasons. "A lot of teams in the league are doing this, so it's no surprise to us that they're going to go in this direction." Jones also is onboard. "I'm excited," he said. "Everybody's cool with how this is being handled."
Analysis: The Seahawks will use Morris and Jones during rushing downs, with Morris during passing situations, and Duckett will likely get short-yardage carries. Go into Week 1 against the Bills with Morris as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option, Jones a low-end No. 3 option and Duckett a reserve Fantasy RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris got the start at running back over Julius Jones during Monday's preseason game against the Chargers. Morris opened the game with two consecutive rushes for 12 yards before Charlie Frye connected with Nate Burleson on a 68-yard touchdown. Morris finished the game with five carries for 31 yards, while Jones had eight carries for 30 yards. Morris also had one reception for eight yards.
Analysis: It's very interesting to see Mike Holmgrem choose Morris to start Monday's game -- the third in the preseason which is usually reserved as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. Seattle brought Jones in from Dallas to be their featured back, but still intend to use Morris, who came into Monday's game with 10 carries and a team-leading 69 rushing yards in the preseason. The most plausible scenario has Morris and Jones splitting carries in the regular season. Morris should be appealing as a late-round flier since he could be in line for up to 10 touches per week in 2008.
News: Seattle is locked in a running back battle between three players: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. Morris had just six touches in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago for 23 total yards and Duckett saw 12 carries for 27 yards. Rookie Justin Forsett actually looked the best with 15 carries for 136 yards, but he isn't considered a candidate to start. Consider Jones the odds on favorite. Jones is low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 RB in Fantasy drafts.
Analysis: The most plausible scenario has Morris and Jones splitting carries in the regular season. However, Seattle paid a lot of coin for Jones to come run for them, and that may be the deciding factor in who sees more work in the Seahawk offense. Nevertheless, Morris should be appealing as a late-round flier since he could be in line for up to 10 touches per week in 2008 (with room for more if Jones stumbles). Jones is low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 RB.
News: Seattle is locked in a running back battle between three players: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. On Friday, during their preseason opener against the Vikings, it was Morris who got the start and played with the first team. Morris also was the most impressive racking up 62 yards on six carries. Jones came in the game next and didn't do much on four carries. He finished with 15 yards. Duckett didn't see action until later but led the team with seven carries. Of course they went for a total of nine yards.
Analysis: The battle is far from over but it is safe to say that round one goes to Morris. Jones may have been limited a bit and is still more than in the running. Duckett obviously performed the worst of the trio and probably won't figure too prominently in Seattle's running game. He could see goal-line carries, however. The most plausible scenario has Morris and Jones splitting carries in the regular season. 3 RB.
News: Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren isn't naming a starting running back in Seattle. In fact, he's got co-starters with free-agent signee Julius Jones and long-standing backup Maurice Morris. "Both Julius and Mo will both play. I'm looking at it right now as if we have two starters at that position. And that's how I talk to the players about it and that's how I'm going to kind of approach it during the season," Holmgren said.
Analysis: Jones is fine with sharing for now, citing that Morris is more familiar with the Seattle offense. Morris is also entering a contract year and will look for playing time so he can post big stats and cash in next offseason.
News:USA Today reports that Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren is anticipating a stronger year from his running attack in 2008, but hasn't quite determined how his primary rushers -- newcomers Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett and Seahawk stalwart Maurice Morris -- will work in the offense. Furthermore, Holmgren is unsure on his starter. "We probably won't make that decision right until late. We'll go into training camp," Holmgren said about naming a starting running back. "You know Mo (Morris) and Julius are going to carry the ball a good portion of the time. Leonard's (Weaver) going to be our starting fullback. The one I have to figure out a little bit is how we are going to use Duckett."
Analysis: We'd be stunned if Jones wasn't named the starter, especially after Seattle doled out nearly $12 million over four years for his services this offseason. Jones is expected to start and see 15-to-20 touches per game with Morris working behind him (5-to-10 touches) and T.J. Duckett working in short-yardage/goal-line situations. We see Jones as a good No. 2 Fantasy RB worth a pick between Rounds 3 and 5, Duckett as a potential touchdown vulture worth a middle- to late-round choice and Morris as a decent reserve worth a late-round pick.
News: As expected, the Seahawks released RB Shaun Alexander on Tuesday, eliminating a running back from Seattle's corps, and giving Maurice Morris a more defined role in the Seattle offense. Morris is expected to get a handful of reps and receptions each week with the 'Hawks, aiding in Julius Jones' run game (Jones is projected to be Seattle's starter).
Analysis: Originally on our short list for 2008 sleepers, Morris is likely going to be lost in the shuffle in Seattle and won't fill in a big role as anything more than a backup for Jones. Maybe he'll end up as a passing downs back, but that's something Mike Holmgren hasn't really used over his career as a coach. Morris is no better than a middle-end reserve in Fantasy play at this point.
News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seattle Times and NFL Network all report that the Seahawks have signed RB Julius Jones to a four-year deal. Jones is expected to compete for (if not take over) the starting job with Shaun Alexander. With T.J. Duckett also signed this offseason, there's not much room left for Maurice Morris, who totaled 628 yards on 140 carries (4.5 avg.) with four touchdowns, adding 213 receiving yards on 23 catches (9.3 avg.) with a score, easily career-highs for Morris.
Analysis: Originally on our short list for 2008 sleepers, Morris is likely going to be lost in the shuffle in Seattle and likely won't fill in a big role elsewhere. He's no better than a middle-end reserve in Fantasy play at this point.
News: Not seeing much work until starting in place of Shaun Alexander in Week 10, Seattle backup RB Maurice Morris totaled 628 yards on 140 carries (4.5 avg.) with four touchdowns, adding 213 receiving yards on 23 catches (9.3 avg.) with a touchdown. The stats were easily career-highs for Morris, who has spent much of his career on the Seahawks' bench. By the way, in the five games Morris started, he totaled 384 rush yards on 90 attempts (4.26 avg.) with three of his four rush scores.
Analysis: Not only has Morris played himself into a potential time-share situation with Alexander in 2008. The Seahawks like Morris because of his limited use and decent versatility. Morris is interested in playing as much as he can because he enters 2008 in a contract year and would like to earn a bigger role and a bigger contract. Figure him as a middle- to late-round pick either as insurance for Alexander or a good source of RB depth as a top-end reserve.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris ran four times for 13 yards during a Wild Card win against the Redskins. It was the fewest amount of carries he has had since Week 15 against the Panthers, when he also had just four carries. Morris did not net a reception against Washington.
Analysis: Morris came into the playoffs after rushing for 91 yards and one touchdown in the final game of the season. He is supposed to be splitting carries with Shaun Alexander, but Seattle has gone to the former MVP a few more times in recent weeks. Morris remains a possible No. 2 Fantasy RB in postseason formats heading into the divisional round against the Packers. Morris will likely be a No. 3 Fantasy RB on Draft Day 2008.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had 13 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown Sunday at Atlanta. Morris also added four catches for 18 yards.
Analysis: Morris played well when Shaun Alexander was taken out of the game. Morris will likely play a limited role in the playoffs, so he is only worth spening a late-round pick on in Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris started Week 16 against the Ravens and finished with 40 yards on 15 carries. He also had one catch for minus-1 yards. Morris has 40 or fewer rushing yards in his last three games.
Analysis: Morris has settled back into Fantasy mediocrity in December with the return of Shaun Alexander. However, he might be a factor Week 17 against the Falcons because Seattle has already clinched as the third seed in the NFC playoffs and there is little need to play Alexander. Consider Morris a No. 2 Fantasy RB or 'flex' option Week 17.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris had four carries for 15 yards with 31 yards on four receptions at Carolina in Week 15. Morris had as many total touches as starter Shaun Alexander.
Analysis: Morris shouldn't be considered anything more than a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB in reception-based leagues. Don't think about using him vs. Baltimore in Week 16.
News: Since Shaun Alexander came back from the injury report, Seattle backup RB Maurice Morris has 18 carries for 100 yards with a touchdown. He had 13 carries last week for 36 yards. This week, he plays at Carolina, a team that ranks 20th vs. the run and has allowed 12 rushing scores this year. The Panthers just allowed Fred Taylor to have 132 yards on 18 carries including an 80-yard touchdown scamper. However, it's the only rushing touchdown the Panthers have given up to a running back in their last four games.
Analysis: Morris shouldn't touch the ball enough to warrant use as anything more than a desperation Fantasy RB in the deepest of Fantasy leagues. Keep him benched, most likely as an insurance policy for Shaun Alexander, for now.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris carried 13 times for 36 yards during a Week 14 win against the Cardinals. He had three more carries, but two fewer rushing yards than starting RB Shaun Alexander. Morris also chipped in with three catches for 26 yards. He failed to score a touchdown for just the second time in five games.
Analysis: Morris has done such a good job in the second half of the season that the Seahawks continue to reward him with touches. However, since he is sharing time with Alexander, he is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy RB or 'flex' option Week 15 against the Panthers.
News: With Shaun Alexander getting healthier by the week, Seahawks RB Maurice Morris will likely see a reduced role over the next couple of weeks. However, Morris has the breakaway speed that Alexander lacks, and turned in a 45-yard touchdown run last week against the Eagles. Seattle hosts Arizona in Week 14.
Analysis: Arizona has a solid run defense -- they rank 11th in rushing yards allowed -- but if Matt Hasselbeck can get things going in the air, the ground attack will surely find more holes. Still, you can't expect Morris to get more than 5-10 carries if Alexander doesn't get hurt, so consider him only for a No. 4 Fantasy RB spot in Week 14.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had only five carries (Shaun Alexander had 20), but nearly matched Alexander's stats, rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown at Philadelphia in Week 13. Alexander also scored and had one more yard rushing. Neither RB caught a pass.
Analysis: Chances are, Morris won't be splitting 50/50 with Alexander anytime soon. He's not anything better than a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB so long as Alexander is upright. Consider him in that exact role vs. Arizona in Week 14.
News: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren says running back Shaun Alexander will play in Sunday's game at Philadelphia. Holmgren told KIRO-AM radio that Alexander has practiced very well this week and Holmgren says he's glad to have him back. Backup Maurice Morris has played well in Alexander's absence and Holmgren says he'll continue to carry the ball as well.
Analysis: Alexander understands that he will split carries with Morris and is fine with it. It will be the first time since 2001 that Alexander will be in a RB tandem. He'll still be wearing a cast over his broken left wrist but should run a little stronger with a healthier knee. We consider both Alexander and Morris No. 3 Fantasy RBs for Week 13, with the nod going to Alexander as he'll be more likely to score on a short-yardage touchdown than Morris. Their Week 13 opponent, Philadelphia, ranks seventh against the run.
News:Shaun Alexander practiced for the second consecutive day for the Seahawks on Thursday. That makes it more likely he will play Week 13 at Philadelphia for the first time since he sprained his knee 3 1/2 weeks ago. The 2005 league MVP split time as the lead running back during drills with Maurice Morris. Alexander's six-year backup fully participated in practice Thursday on his sore ankle after being limited a day earlier. Morris said his ankle was much better Thursday and he will play when Seattle (7-4) meets the Eagles (5-6). He was injured when St. Louis linebacker Will Witherspoon tackled him by the face mask late in Week 13's win over the Rams.
Analysis: Coach Mike Holmgren has said Morris, who has averaged 85 yards rushing in the three games he has started for Alexander -- all Seattle victories -- will continue to play even when Alexander returns. Morris always has been merely a change-of-pace back spelling Alexander for a handful of plays. "Maybe so, because Shaun's always been the type of guy who didn't miss one game," said Morris, who turns 28 on Saturday. It appears as though Alexander will be back Week 13 and Morris should be considered at best a No. 3 Fantasy RB or 'flex' option. By some chance Alexander doesn't play, Morris might be a No. 2 Fantasy RB.
News: The Seahawks expected Shaun Alexander to be back practicing Wednesday afternoon for the first time since he sprained his ankle 3 1/2 weeks ago. Alexander, who is still wearing a cast over a broken left wrist, hadn't practiced since he sprained his left knee during a loss in Cleveland on Nov. 4. Coach Mike Holmgren said he met with Alexander on Tuesday and explained that upon his return, Morris will continue to play. The coach said Alexander was fine with that altered arrangement. Asked whether Morris or Alexander, or both, will play against the Eagles, Holmgren said: "That's a good one. Anything I say probably won't happen. So we'll just let it happen ... and see how that goes."
Analysis: It would be the first time since Alexander became Seattle's lead runner in 2001 that he hasn't been the sole, featured back in the offense. The 30-year-old Alexander has 492 yards rushing in eight games. He has two touchdowns, the same as Morris has in the last three games. It sure looks like Alexander can't be relied upon as a No. 1 Fantasy RB anymore this season, and his presence will cut into Morris' reps, making them both No. 3 Fantasy runners if they both play. If Alexander sits in Week 13, Morris would be a No. 2 option running the ball by himself against the Eagles' seventh-ranked run defense. We'll know more as the week rolls on, so stay dialed in.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had 16 carries for 79 yards Sunday at St. Louis. He also had one catch for 5 yards.
Analysis: Morris didn't play as well as expected against the Rams, but he still played well given he only had 16 carries. Look for Morris to bounce back in Week 13 at Philadelphia. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy RB as long as Shaun Alexander (knee) remains out.
News:Shaun Alexander is expected to miss his third-consecutive game with a knee injury, which will give Seahawks RB Maurice Morris another start against the Rams. That's great news for Fantasy owners because Morris has played well the past two games and has a good history against St. Louis. In his last two games against Chicago and San Francisco, even with the Seahawks going to pass-oriented attack, Morris has 174 yards rushing and two touchdowns. And in two games against the Rams last year with Alexander out with a broken foot, Morris had 198 yards rushing. St. Louis is No. 19 against the run with 11 rushing touchdowns allowed. Morris has been a solid free agent pickup in the majority of Fantasy leagues and is a great start this week.
Analysis: Consider Morris a No. 1 option in all Fantasy leagues. Expect a solid outing against the Rams.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris was back in the starting lineup Week 11 the Bears as Shaun Alexander missed a second consecutive game with a knee injury. Morris turned in another solid performance with 87 yards rushing on 18 carries. He also scored on a 19-yard run in the second quarter. Morris also had 87 yards rushing and a touchdown in his first start Week 10 against the 49ers. Morris also had a 19-yard reception Week 11.
Analysis: Shaun who? Exactly. Morris is making Fantasy owners and Seahawks fans forget about the former MVP, who is now injury prone. At this rate, the Seahawks can afford to keep Alexander reserved until he is at 100 percent. If Morris starts again Week 12 against the Rams, consider him a No. 2 Fantasy RB. Track the news out of Seattle.
News: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander will not play Week 11 against the Bears. "I told Shaun, until he can practice the whole week, then I'm not going to put him in the field," head coach Mike Holmgren said. Alexander did not practice this week and only received a few reps leading up to Week 10. He was inactive for the game against the 49ers. Maurice Morris will once again start in his place.
Analysis: Morris had 103 total yards and a score against the 49ers. The touchdown came on a six-yard run in the second quarter. He finished with 87 yards on 28 carries and 16 on three catches. The Seahawks still plan to throw the ball much more than they run, so consider Morris no better than a No. 2 Fantasy RB.
News: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren says running back Shaun Alexander is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears in Seattle. Holmgren says Alexander is still nursing a knee injury that kept him out of the Monday night game against the 49ers. Holmgren told KIRO-AM that he doesn't want to put Alexander at risk of re-injury. He says he wants Alexander to practice a full week before he goes back into a game.
Analysis: Maurice Morris is expected to start in place of Alexander. Owners of Alexander should keep him benched until he comes back and proves that he's not a bust ... if he can do it. Morris, meanwhile, is a decent No. 2 Fantasy RB for Week 11.
News: If this is not the end of the Shaun Alexander era in Seattle, it at least may be time for a new, sharing phase. Ever since Ricky Watters arrived to be the Seahawks' featured back in 1998, the Seahawks have based their running game primarily upon one player, with only situational substitutions or injury fill-ins. Times are changing. Alexander was out of another practice Wednesday with the sprained knee that caused him to miss the first game of his stalled season Week 10 against the 49ers. For now, an offense with an increased emphasis on Matt Hasselbeck's passing in lieu of an ineffective running game is moving on -- with Maurice Morris. He gained 89 yards on 28 carries against San Francisco and gave the previously lifeless rushing offense a pulse. The Seahawks host the Bears Week 11.
Analysis: Head coach Mike Holmgren doesn't know exactly how he will proceed once Alexander is healthy enough to return. "We're not quite there yet," Holmgren said. "I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do that yet. I thought Mo had a good game the other night. More effective? Less effective (than Alexander has been)? I wouldn't say that, necessarily. I think when Shaun's healthy, Shaun's going to be back in playing. But I think Mo certainly deserves the chance to play. What I have to figure out is probably a way to use both of them." If Morris is still starting Week 11 against the Bears, use him as a No. 2 Fantasy RB.
News: In a rare start for a banged-up Shaun Alexander Week 10 against the 49ers, Seahawks RB Maurice Morris had 103 total yards and a score. The touchdown came on a six-yard run in the second quarter. He finished with 87 yards on 28 carries and 16 on three catches.
Analysis: So much for all that talk of Morris replacing a healthy Alexander. After averaging 4.6 yards per carry in spot duty, Morris averaged an Alexander-like 3.1 yards per carry in Week 10 against a not-so-stellar San Francisco run defense. Consider grabbing him off waivers if you need running back insurance, though we expect Alexander to return from the knee injury that held him out this week. The Seahawks host the Bears in Week 11.
News: With starting RB Shaun Alexander inactive, Maurice Morris will start for the Seahawks in Week 10 against the 49ers.
Analysis: Morris has actually outperformed Alexander per carry this season, so we consider him a solid No. 2 Fantasy RB for this matchup. Get him active if you can.
News: According to a report, Seattle RB Shaun Alexander will not play Monday night against the 49ers. Alexander told ESPN on Sunday that he was too banged up and didn't expect to play. Alexander has dealt with a broken left wrist and sprained left ankle this season, but his twisted left knee is the injury that will keep him on the sideline. With Alexander out, Maurice Morris would start for the Seahawks.
Analysis: Morris should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy RB against the 49ers if the report is accurate. Check back with CBSSports.com before setting your lineup to make sure Morris will start.
News: In front of cameras or while talking to anyone besides his teammates, Maurice Morris is shy. An unassuming man about to assume a larger role in the Seahawks' middling season. "It happened last year, I had to step in," Morris said of replacing injured Shaun Alexander as the lead running back. "Of course this is an opportunity." Get him in front of his teammates, though, and the 27-year-old who grew up in South Carolina with six brothers and eight sisters becomes a jokester, a show from the corner locker. At least that's what Morris was Thursday after practice for Monday night's home game (Week 10) against the San Francisco 49ers. "He's got a lot of respect from all the O-line guys," Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones said of Morris. "When his number is called, he's got that ability to make plays. Hopefully, he can make some plays when he gets the opportunity."
Analysis: Morris might get a chance to make some plays on Monday. Coach Mike Holmgren is waiting to see if Alexander (wrist, knee, ankle) is able to practice Friday before deciding whether to rest him for one game. Last season, Morris ran for a career-high 604 yards while starting eight games, six while Alexander was out with a broken foot. He had consecutive 100-yard games, including a career night of 138 yards on 30 carries in a November win over Oakland. This season in limited work, Morris is averaging 4.6 yards per carry, to Alexander's 3.3. While Alexander had just 32 yards on 14 carries and got hurt in Week 9's loss in Cleveland, Morris had 55 yards on nine carries -- including two key runs on the drive that tied the game. Morris is worth picking up at this time because Alexander could be out, which would make Morris the starter. Even if Alexander plays, Morris will likely see extra time against San Francisco in Week 10.
News: According to the Seattle Times, Seattle RB Shaun Alexander is hurting as defenses continue to zero in on him he has a broken left wrist that will probably keep him in that cast for the rest of the season, coach Mike Holmgren said, and he might not practice much this week because of soreness from minor left knee and ankle sprains he suffered Sunday. Maurice Morris would start or play more if Alexander is out or limited when the Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. "It's my understanding it wasn't real serious," Holmgren said of Alexander's latest injuries. "At this point I don't know what the situation will be by the end of the week. I'm hopeful, but I don't know." Alexander had X-rays and was walking without an aid Monday.
Analysis: Morris is worth picking up at this time because Alexander could be out, which would make Morris the starter. Even if Alexander plays, Morris will likely see extra time against San Francisco in Week 10.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris carried the ball nine times for 55 yards and caught two passes for 43 yards Week 9 at Cleveland. He spelled starter Shaun Alexander, who was slowed by knee and ankle injuries, for much of the afternoon.
Analysis: Morris might as well have spelled Alexander because of ineffectiveness. The backup played better than the ever-struggling starter, which might give the Seahawks reason enough to rest Alexander until he's fully recovered. For now, we expect Alexander to start Week 10 in a great matchup against the 49ers, but pick up Morris just in case the injuries force the Seahawks to go in a different direction.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morrice ran for 42 yards on 10 carries and picked up 18 on two catches Week 7 against the Rams.
Analysis: Morris is worth a roster spot as a reserve in Fantasy leagues for owners of Shaun Alexander and those in the deepest of formats. The Seahawks have a bye in Week 8 before visiting Cleveland in Week 9.
News: Maurice Morris had just one carry for four yards in Week 6 against New Orleans and he did not have any receptions.
Analysis: Morris is worth a roster spot as a reserve in Fantasy leagues for owners of Shaun Alexander and those in the deepest of formats in Week 7 against Atlanta.
News: According to the Seattle Times, Mike Holmgren said Monday that backup RB Maurice Morris will get more carries, but not out of concern for Shaun Alexander's cracked wrist. Morris was coming off a hip injury suffered in the season opener and missed the next two games. He has just eight carries for 28 yards this season and didn't get to run the ball Sunday.
Analysis: Do not panic, Alexander owners. With a sore hip, Morris has lost some carries recently, and Holmgren appears to be just giving Morris as many carries as he had before getting hurt (possibly 7-10 or so). SA remains a must-start in Week 6 against the Saints.
News: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said that backup RB Maurice Morris, who missed two games with a hip injury and has only eight carries this season, will be running more to help spell Shaun Alexander, who has been playing with a cast over his sprained left wrist. Alexander, who turned 30 in August, gained just 25 yards on 11 carries against Pittsburgh -- his most meager day since gaining 18 yards on 11 rushes Nov. 17, 2002, against Denver. He has 378 yards rushing through five games. That's his fewest at this point in a year since that '02 season, his first as Seattle's feature back. He often appears to be tentative, chop-stepping into the line. "Mo practices hard. Mo's going to get some more carries," Holmgren said Monday. "Even when Shaun gained all those yards a couple of years ago, Mo carried the ball. So I'm not doing anything different. I'm just doing it the way we used to do it."
Analysis: Expect Alexander to still see the wide majority of carries, but for Morris to sneak in there and take a couple of snaps. Alexander remains a low-end No. 1 Fantasy RB and has a fantastic matchup vs. New Orleans in Week 6. Be sure to start him, but also be sure to acquire Morris off the waiver wire as a Fantasy handcuff for your stud.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris did not get a carry or reception Sunday against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Morris is working his way back from a hip injury. He should not be used in Week 6 against New Orleans or any week unless Shaun Alexander gets hurt.
News: RB Maurice Morris (hip) practiced in full Friday after missing practice Thursday. The Seahawks list him as probable for Week 5 at the Steelers.
Analysis: Morris played last week with the same injury, collecting 13 yards on five carries, so he probably shouldn't have a problem on Sunday. Still, he serves as nothing more than Shaun Alexander's primary backup. In all but especially deep leagues, you could probably fill your roster with someone better than an oft-injured No. 2 RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (hip) did not practice Thursday as the team prepares for Week 5 at Pittsburgh. Morris has eight carries for 28 yards in two games.
Analysis: Morris still serves as Shaun Alexander's primary backup, but that role only gives him Fantasy value if Alexander succumbs to injury. And, even then, he has to be healthy to capitalize on the opportunity. In all but especially deep leagues, you could probably fill your roster with someone better than an oft-injured No. 2 RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (five rushes for 13 yards and one catch for four yards) and FB Leonard Weaver (three rushes for six yards and four catches for 26 yards) saw some action in Seattle's 23-3 win over the 49ers in Week 4.
Analysis: Morris is only worth owning as insurance for Shaun Alexander, while Weaver should be ignored in all leagues. The Seahawks play at Pittsburgh in Week 4.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (hip) is listed as probable for Week 4 at San Francisco. Morris practiced without restrictions Friday after limited reps on Thursday. Morris has not played in the last two weeks.
2 RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (hip) did not practice Thursday after doing so Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 4 at San Francisco. Morris has not played in the last two weeks.
2 RB.
News: Notable inactives from Week 3's Cincinnati-Seattle game include: Bengals LB Ahmad Brooks, QB Jeff Rowe (No. 3/emergency QB), DB Nedu Ndukwe, DB Ethan Kilmer, WR Tab Perry, DL Frostee Rucker and LB Rashad Jeanty. For the Bengals, OT Levi Jones will not start. LBs Lemar Marshall and Caleb Miller will start for the Bengals. The Seahawks' inactives are: DL Jason Babin, LB Kevin Bentley, QB Charlie Frye (No. 3/emergency QB), WR D.J. Hackett, TE Bennie Joppru, RB Maurice Morris and WR Ben Obomanu.
Analysis: Perry and Hackett remain sidelined for their respective teams and should be benched in Fantasy play as well. The remainder of the players listed here aren't reliable Fantasy owners.
News: The Seahawks list RB Maurice Morris as doubtful for Week 3 versus the Bengals after he didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday with a hip injury.
Analysis: Morris missed Week 2 at Arizona with the same injury. He still serves as Shaun Alexander's primary backup, but that role only gives him Fantasy value if Alexander succumbs to injury. And, even then, he has to be healthy to capitalize on the opportunity. In all but especially deep leagues, you could probably fill your roster with someone better than an oft-injured No. 2 RB.
News: The Seahawks listed QB Charlie Frye (third QB), WR D.J. Hackett (ankle), RB Maurice Morris (hip), DL Jason Babin (coach's decision), LB Leroy Hill (foot) and WR Ben Obamanu (hamstring) as inactive for Week 2 at Arizona.
Analysis: None of these players should be on your active Fantasy roster. That should not change until further notice.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris (hip) is listed as doubtful for Week 2 at Arizona. He did not participate in practice at all during the week.
Analysis: Morris finished with three carries for 15 yards and a 34-yard touchdown reception in Week 1 against the Bucs. Despite the heroics, Morris is best used as a reserve in deeper Fantasy leagues and an insurance for Shaun Alexander owners. Keep him reserved in all Fantasy formats for Week 2.
News: Matt Hasselbeck spotted Maurice Morris running past Derrick Brooks down the sideline iun the fourth quarter of Week 1's win against the Buccaneers. Shaun Alexander's backup, not the primary receiver on the play, beat the Bucs' 10-time Pro Bowl selection and made a tumbling catch for a 34-yard touchdown and a 20-6 lead. "(We've) been saying to Mo for a long time now, 'Hey, be alive! You are going to get the ball.' I think it's been four years and he's never gotten the ball," Hasselbeck said. "I was saying, 'I hope he looks.' "
Analysis: Morris finished with three carries for 15 yards and the 34-yard touchdown reception. Despite the heroics, Morris is best used as a reserve in deeper Fantasy leagues and an insurance for owners of Alexander. The Seahawks travel to meet the Cardinals in Week 2.
News: Maurice Morris took over early for starter Shaun Alexander and finished with 31 yards on six carries including a 15-yard run at Green Bay in Seattle's second preseason game.
Analysis: Morris could face competition for the backup role, but ultimately he won't see much playing time unless Shaun Alexander gets hurt or is wholly ineffective on the field. Keep him off of Fantasy rosters unless you draft him with a late-round pick if you take Alexander in Round 1.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris finally got a shot at seeing regular playing time last season, starting eight of the team's 16 games. But those days are over with starting RB Shaun Alexander healthy and back in the fold for 2007. Morris is actually more effective as a backup, averaging nearly three-10ths of a yard better per carry when he's not asked to shoulder the workload.
Analysis: Morris could face competition from Maurice Weeks for the backup role this summer, but ultimately he won't see much playing time unless Shaun Alexander gets hurt or is ineffective on the field. Keep him off of Fantasy rosters, possibly drafting him with a late-round pick if you take Alexander in Round 1.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had 10 carries for 39 yards and one catch for eight yards against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Morris has no Fantasy value heading into the playoffs and will go back to being a backup RB in 2007 as long as Shaun Alexander remains healthy.
News: Seattle backup RB Maurice Morris had 3 rush yards and one catch for no yards vs. San Diego in Week 16.
Analysis: Morris could see significant playing time at Tampa Bay in Week 17 if the Seahawks have nothing to play for. Monitor the Seahawks' status before starting any of their key players in Week 17.
News: Maurice Morris had two carries for 14 yards in Week 15 against the 49ers.
Analysis: Morris does not get enough looks in the offense when Shaun Alexander is healthy. Avoid him in all Fantasy leagues for Week 16 against the Chargers.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris rushed four times for 12 yards in Week 14 at Arizona. He also caught one pass for a loss of five yards.
Analysis: Morris is not a useful Fantasy option at this time. Ignore him in Week 15.
News: Maurice Morris had three carries for seven yards in Week 13 at Denver and he did not have any receptions.
Analysis: Morris is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 14 at Arizona as long as Shaun Alexander remains 100 percent healthy.
News: Maurice Morris carried three times for six yards in Week 12 against the Packers.
Analysis: With the return of Shaun Alexander (foot) from injury, Mo Mo is no longer worth a roster spot in most Fantasy leagues.
News: With Seattle RB Shaun Alexander returning against the 49ers, Maurice Morris was back to his reserve role and had just two carries for 12 yards and one catch for minus-7 yards.
Analysis: Morris now has minimal Fantasy value with Alexander back. If Alexander comes back fine from his return from a foot injury, then consider put Morris on the bench.
News: The 49ers won't know until Sunday whether they will be facing league MVP Shaun Alexander when they play the Seattle Seahawks in San Francisco. Coach Mike Holmgren said Friday that he believes Alexander is "capable of playing" against the 49ers, "but we're going to have to see how it all sorts itself out. "I will do that on Sunday," he said. Holmgren had said on Wednesday that he would know by Friday whether his star running back would play. Alexander practiced this week for the first time since he broke his left foot during a game against the New York Giants on Sept. 24. Thursday, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said his team was preparing as if Alexander would start. He remained questionable on the team's injury report.
Analysis: Earlier in the week, Alexander split time with Maurice Morris on the starting unit. Follow the situation up until Sunday morning when Fantasy lineups must be finalized to see whether or not Morris will get another start. The Seahawks play the 49ers in Week 11 and Morris could be viewed as a No. 3 RB.
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris rushed for 124 yards on 21 carries in a Week 10 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Morris has now rushed for more than 100 yards in two straight weeks. Because he is running so well, the Seahawks could hold off bringing back Shaun Alexander for yet another week. Keep an eye out for updates on Alexander's playing status for Week 11 before settling on using Morris for Fantasy purposes. The Seahawks play the 49ers in Week 11 and Morris could be viewed as a No. 3 RB.
News: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Tuesday that RB Shaun Alexander (foot) is not expected to play in Week 10 vs. St. Louis. Maurice Morris is expected to start again at running back.
Analysis: Alexander should remain reserved for yet another week, with Morris a solid No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 10 action.
News: Maurice Morris did an admirable job filling in for RB Shaun Alexander (foot) in Week 9 against the Raiders. He had 30 carries for a career-high 138 yards in the 16-0 win, although he did not find the end zone.
Analysis: Morris might be a decent No. 3 Fantasy running back or 'flex' option for Week 10 against the Rams if the defending NFL MVP is still unable to suit up.
News: With Shaun Alexander sidelined another week, RB Maurice Morris remains the featured back even though it's becoming clear he's a change-of-pace runner. The Seahawks had hoped to plug him into the offense and continue about their business. The holes haven't been there, however, and Morris isn't big enough to make his own. He's a hit-the-hole runner who takes what is there but doesn't get more.
Analysis: Morris has totaled 183 rush yards in four games as the starter. He has only rushed for more than 50 yards in one of those contests. The Seahawks play the Raiders in Week 9 and the Raiders are among the 10 worst rush defenses in the league. You can start Morris based on the favorable matchup, but he has done little so far to prove that he might be able to have a monster game against a weak rush defense.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had 12 carries for 25 yards (just over 2.0 yards per carry) with no receptions at Kansas City in Week 8.
Analysis: Morris has totaled 183 rush yards in four games -- not even 50 yards per game. On the plus side, Shaun Alexander is expected back vs. Oakland in Week 9, so Morris' Fantasy value will return to being a good backup to Alexander. Then again, if Morris was this bad as Alexander's replacement, is he really worth owning as a backup to Alexander in Fantasy play?
News: Seahawks RB Maurice Morris had 17 carries for 49 yards and also had two catches for 9 yards.
Analysis: It is unknown if Shaun Alexander (foot) will return for Week 8 against Kansas City. If Alexander is back in the lineup, it will hurt Morris' value. Otherwise consider him a low-end No. 2 option against the Chiefs.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris rushed for 74 yards on 23 carries with a fumble and two catches for six yards at St. Louis in Week 6. Morris started for the second straight game in place of Shaun Alexander.
Analysis: Morris' Fantasy value could nosedive as Alexander is expected back vs. Minnesota in Week 7. He is still worth owning as a backup for Alexander, and who knows for sure if Alexander will return in Week 7, so keep Morris on staff (or deal him to whomever has Alexander).
News: Seattle expects to be without reigning league MVP Shaun Alexander for one more week. Alexander is targeting his return for next week against Minnesota as he recovers from the broken foot that sidelined him against the Bears. Maurice Morris, who gained 35 yards on 11 carries in Alexander's place, is expected to start again Sunday.
Analysis: The Rams run defense has not been strong -- last week Noah Herron ran for over 100 yards and a score against them, and he's running behind two rookie offensive guards. Morris is a candidate for 80-plus yards and perhaps a score and should be considered a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB and a stud No. 3 choice.
News: Maurice Morris made his fifth career start in Week 4 at Chicago, subbing for the injured Shaun Alexander (foot). He carried 11 times for 35 yards and added a reception for two yards.
Analysis: Morris struggled against a stout Chicago defense. The Seahawks are off in Week 5 before a more favorable matchup in Week 6 at St. Louis. If Alexander is still unable to go, Morris might be a decent No. 3 running back or 'flex' option in most Fantasy leagues.
News: Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander asked for and got another round of CT scans Wednesday on the previously diagnosed cracked bone in his left foot. Alexander said those tests showed the same break in the fourth metatarsal that was there on Monday. So despite feeling "great" following two days of praying and "a bone machine" feverishly working at Alexander's house, he says he is out indefinitely - including for Sunday's game at Chicago. Maurice Morris took all of Alexander's practice repetitions Wednesday and is primed to make his fifth career start in Sunday night's showdown with the Bears, who are also 3-0.
Analysis: It looks as though it will become official on Thursday and Morris will be asked to make the start Sunday against the Bears. Owners are advised to start Morris as a replacement for Alexander if they don't have a RB with a better matchup on staff. If you're lucky enough to own Morris without owning Alexander, you have terrific trade bait as well as a nice No. 3 option for Week 4.
News: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that RB Shaun Alexander has a broken bone in his foot and will be out for "at least a couple of weeks." Maurice Morris is expected to start in his place at Chicago in Week 4.
Analysis: Maurice Morris is a capable NFL runner who isn't the least bit inexperienced. His presence for the Seahawks in Week 4 at Chicago may actually produce similar stats to what a sore-footed Alexander would have done in the game. That said, the Bears defense is not the best opponent for a Fantasy RB to go up against. Owners are advised to start Morris as a replacement for Alexander if they don't have a RB with a better matchup on staff. If you're lucky enough to own Morris without owning Alexander, you have terrific trade bait as well as a nice No. 3 option for Week 4.
News: Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander (toe) rushed 20 times for 47 yards in Week 3 vs. the N.Y. Giants, but did not have a single carry in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks had a big lead. He did find the end zone on his first carry of the game on a 1-yard score. Maurice Morris saw 15 carries for 18 yards and Mack Strong rushed five times for 33 yards in his absence.
Analysis: Neither back is worthy of Fantasy consideration unless it becomes known that Alexander will miss time due to injury. Monitor Alexander's status in Week 4 and be ready to pounce on either back if he is declared unfit to play. The Seahawks have a tough matchup at Chicago in Week 4.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris rushed for 25 yards and no touchdowns on four carries in the Seahawks' 21-10 win over the Cardinals. He had one reception for 27 yards.
Analysis: Morris is the primary backup for Shaun Alexander and won't see many carries unless Alexander loses playing time. He should only be owned as insurance for Alexander. The Seahawks play vs. the Giants in Week 3.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris had three carries for 23 yards with a six-yard catch at Detroit in Week 1.
Analysis: Morris is the primary backup for Shaun Alexander and won't see many carries unless Alexander loses playing time. He should only be owned as insurance for Alexander. The Seahawks play vs. Arizona in Week 2.
News: According to the Seattle Times, starting left tackle Walter Jones missed Monday's practice with a shoulder injury. Coach Mike Holmgren said he expects Jones to practice Wednesday and be available for Sunday's season opener in Detroit. Jones suffered the shoulder injury in the Seahawks' exhibition loss in San Diego. It was serious enough that the team had tests done, but Holmgren said as early as last week he expected Jones would be ready for the regular season. Tom Ashworth played left tackle in place of Jones in the exhibition finale against Oakland.
Analysis: With the loss of left guard Steve Hutchinson to the Vikings in the offseason, an injury to Jones would not be good for Morris or Shaun Alexander, who thrives running to the left. But even without Hutchinson or Jones, Alexander is a must-start in all Fantasy leagues. Morris should only be used as a backup to Alexander and is not a recommended start.
News: Maurice Morris (ankle) had a big night in Friday's preseason game at San Diego, carrying a team-high 13 times for 67 yards, including a 33-yard scamper. He also chipped in with two receptions.

News: The Tacoma News-Tribune reports that RB Maurice Morris has agreed in principle to a three-year deal with the Seahawks. Morris would continue to back up league MVP Shaun Alexander.
Analysis: Those of you who had Morris on your keeper-league rosters can stop holding your breath. With Morris staying in town, his Fantasy value reverts to where it was in 2005, which is buried. Unless Shaun Alexander turns into Sean Hannity, Morris will be mostly on the bench in 2006.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris, a free agent this offseason, has been the buzz at the Combine among NFL GMs, and has apparently garnered the interest of the Vikings, Cardinals, and the Seahawks, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Analysis: Morris plays a lot like Shaun Alexander as far as being an outside receiver and getting to the edge of the offensive line. As far as a between-the-tackles runner, though, Morris could be lacking. He's a lot like Brian Westbrook ... and who is the Vikings new head coach? Brad Childress could see a lot of what he wants out of his featured back in Morris. We could be looking at an early- to middle-round pick come August.
News: Maurice Morris rushed for 288 yards and one TD this season as the No. 2 running back in Seattle. He also caught five passes for 48 yards.
Analysis: At this point Morris is no better than late-round insurance for owners who land Shaun Alexander in 2006 drafts. Should Alexander leave as a free agent, however, Morris' value could rise.
News: Maurice Morris and the Seattle Seahawks host the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship Game. He rushed for 49 yards on 18 carries in the absence of Shaun Alexander (concussion) in last weekend's 20-10 win over Washington.
Analysis: Alexander is expected to return and start against Carolina, so Morris shouldn't be considered a viable option in postseason leagues.

Analysis: At this point in the season, Morris only has value if you also own Shaun Alexander are heading to the Fantasy playoffs.
News: Maurice Morris got an extended look in Week 13 at Philadelphia, as starter Shaun Alexander was given a rest in the blowout win. Morris finished with 15 carries for 33 yards.
Analysis: Morris is only worth a reserve roster spot for Fantasy owners of Shaun Alexander as insurance against a long-term injury.
News: Seattle RB Maurice Morris rushed for 104 yards on just eight carries with a touchdown in Sunday night's blowout win over the Texans.
Analysis: Despite his impressive stats from Week 6, don't consider Morris a starter at this point. Shaun Alexander is clearly the man in Seattle, with Morris serving as his understudy.

Analysis: Morris is only worth keeping as insurance for Shaun Alexander's owners.
News: The Seattle Times reports that Seattle will try to get Morris involved in the offense more. "Down the stretch here, he might get some more touches," said Mike Holmgren. "It's a balancing act that you have to do sometimes when you have a couple good player at a position."

News: Morris relieved starter Shaun Alexander for much of the second half in Sunday's laugher at Arizona. Morris had 11 carries for 67 yards.

"We're not going to split time or anything at that position," Holmgren said. "But we're going to get him in the game and let him play a little bit more."
