Shockey kills retirement talk

News: A day after head coach Ron Rivera suggested that Jeremy Shockey might retire, the Panthers tight end posted on Twitter that it's not going to happen. Apparently Tweeting from Rio, Shockey wrote, "Why is everyone talking about retirement?? Football season is in sep right"
Analysis: Shockey caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns and missed only one game to injury. He isn't a huge part of what the Panthers do and could be fairly easy to replace. Fantasy owners aren't looking for him in standard drafts this summer anyway.

Rivera: Shockey contemplating retirement

News: Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that TE Jeremy Shockey is considering retirement. "But with him, you never know," Rivera said according to the Charlotte Observer. Shockey caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns and missed only one game to injury.
Analysis: Shockey isn't a huge part of what the Panthers do and could be fairly easy to replace. Fantasy owners aren't looking for him in standard drafts this summer anyway.

Panthers could bring back Shockey

News: The Charlotte Observer considers re-signing free agent TE Jeremy Shockey a "high priority" this offseason. Shockey was the No. 2 TE for the Panthers behind Greg Olsen, and he had a productive season when he caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns and missed only one game to injury.
Analysis: Though not the same receiver he was a decade ago, Shockey still is a dependable target, particularly in the red zone. If his asking price is too high, Panthers could turn to Gary Barnidge, who was having a great 2011 camp before breaking his ankle. Keep an eye on what happens with Shockey, and if he returns to the Panthers as expected he would be a No. 2 Fantasy TE on Draft Day worth a late-round pick in deeper leagues.

Shockey finds end zone again

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey extended his touchdown streak to three games in Week 16 against the Buccaneers. He hauled in an 8-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter and finished with two catches for 14 yards in the 48-16 win. It was Shockey's fourth touchdown of the season.
Analysis: Shockey was overshadowed by Greg Olsen earlier in the year but he has come alive for Fantasy owners of late. He has seven catches for 85 yards with three scores over his last four games, and could end the year with a bang as he will play his former team -- New Orleans -- in the season finale. He caught three passes for 21 yards when he faced the Saints earlier in the year so consider Shockey as more of a low-end Fantasy TE for Week 17.

Shockey contributes another TD

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey had a only two catches Week 15 at Houston, but he made them count, scoring a touchdown for a second straight game when he caught a short pass from QB Cam Newton in the second quarter and reached his arm over the goal line for a 9-yard score. He was targeted four times in the contest, finishing with a total of 35 yards.
Analysis: Shockey had only two catches in his touchdown-scoring performance last week as well. He may not be a consistent part of the passing game, but he's making an impact in Fantasy. The bad news is when he doesn't score a touchdown, he's useless, so you'll want to approach him with caution. He's more like a No. 2 Fantasy TE than a No. 1 for Week 16 against the Buccaneers.

Shockey to get back in end zone?

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey had only two catches against the Falcons last week, but one of them went for a touchdown. It was his second touchdown of the year. Both have come in his last five games even though he has only eight total catches during that stretch. If he hopes to get back in the end zone Week 15 at Houston, he'll have his work cut out for him. The Texans rank third against the pass, allowing 183.5 yards per game, and have given up the third-fewest Fantasy points to tight ends this season.
Analysis: QB Cam Newton tends to look to his underneath route runners -- both Shockey and fellow TE Greg Olsen -- when the team gets close to the end zone, but lately, he's just been taking off and running with it in those situations. As far as the team's tight ends go, Shockey still plays second fiddle to Olsen, so starting him is a complete gamble in Fantasy. He's a touchdown-or-bust option, and he has only two touchdowns all year. He's at best a No. 2 Fantasy TE.

Shockey gets back in end zone

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey had only two catches for 10 yards Week 14 against the Panthers, but he managed to score a touchdown on one of them. He was waiting in the back of the end zone when QB Cam Newton faked a run up the middle before lobbing the ball over the defense for a 6-yard score.
Analysis: Newton has been so effective running the ball in those situations in recent weeks that the Falcons bit on the play fake. It's a nifty play that could result in a few scattered touchdowns for Shockey down the stretch, but they'll be too unpredictable for you to rely on him as more than a No. 2 Fantasy TE, given his lack of yardage.

Shockey limited to one catch

News: Carolina TE Jeremy Shockey only managed one catch in the Week 13 win at Tampa Bay. Shockey came down with a 26-yard reception from QB Cam Newton in the game. Newton targeted Shockey just the one time in the contest.
Analysis: Shockey has really been an underwhelming Fantasy option all season for Carolina. With Newton not exactly at his highest level of passing the football recently, that hasn't helped Shockey's production, either. Shockey had one of his best games of the season in Week 6, the last time the Panthers played against their Week 14 opponents the Falcons. Shockey caught four passes for a season-high 60 yards in that game in Atlanta. We don't expect a big performance this time around. Shockey is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 14.

Shockey picks up his pace

News: After sitting out Week 11 with a rib injury and posting poor numbers in the two previous weeks, Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey bounced back in a Week 12 win over the Colts. Though Shockey was targeted only three times in the contest, he made catches on all three passes, gaining 41 yards. It was Shockey's highest yardage total since Week 6 against the Falcons. However, the 10-year veteran gave the Panthers their only turnover, as he fumbled in the third quarter, and the Colts kicked a field goal on the ensuing drive.
Analysis: Though Shockey rebounded in Week 12, it was a modest rebound at best. Then again, owners aren't looking for Shockey to put up big numbers, as he is strictly a TE option in deeper leagues. Though he gets a favorable matchup against the Buccaneers in Week 13, owners in standard formats should still plan to pass on Shockey.

Shockey tries to get back on track

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey has played a minor role in the offense in recent weeks, as he has not been targeted five times or more since Week 6 at Atlanta. Even if QB Cam Newton should look to Shockey more often in Week 12, he will likely have a hard time making an impact in Fantasy. Shockey's opponent, the Colts, have allowed only two tight ends -- the Steelers' Heath Miller and the Saints' Jimmy Graham -- to gain more than 40 receiving yards this season. Shockey, who missed Week 11's game at Detroit with a rib injury, returned to practice on Wednesday. Panthers coach Ron Rivera was happy to have Shockey back, saying, “He bumped some people around and the volume of practice was up. With his leadership, it’s good to have him out there.”
Analysis: With a better matchup, Shockey is worth considering in deeper leagues. However, having come off an injury and facing an opponent with a strong track record against tight ends, it's best to avoid Shockey in Week 12.

Shockey misses game Week 11

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey (ribs) was inactive as expected Week 11 at Detroit. He didn't even make the trip after being doubtful on the injury report Friday. He was downgraded to out on Saturday.
Analysis: Panthers coach Ron Rivera was optimistic about Shockey playing through this injury, but it seems the medical staff just told him it was best to give the veteran TE a rest. Shockey is not the player he used to be and is a backup TE to Greg Olsen in Carolina. He has minimal Fantasy value when healthy and will be a very low-end option for Week 12 if he returns to action.

Shockey downgraded to out

News: Carolina TE Jeremy Shockey was ruled out for Week 11 at Detroit with a troublesome ribs injury. Shockey was originally listed as doubtful on the team's injury report before his status was downgraded on Saturday. He did not make the team's trip to Detroit.
Analysis: Shockey suffered the injury on the first play of the game last Sunday against Tennessee, but was able to return to registered just one catch. He now has 24 receptions for 311 yards, but remains the secondary tight end to Greg Olsen. Fantasy owners should keep Shockey reserved only in deeper formats at this point in the season.

Shockey's status in doubt

News: Carolina TE Jeremy Shockey is listed as doubtful for Week 11 at Detroit because of a ribs injury. Shockey has been unable to practice this past week with the issue, and Panthers coach Rob Rivera said he will determine his playing status on Saturday, according to reports. Shockey has just one touchdown catch this season.
Analysis: Shockey suffered the injury on the first play of the game last week against Tennessee, but was able to return to posted his only catch for a gain of 19 yards. He now has 24 receptions for 311 yards and remains the secondary tight end to Greg Olsen. The Lions are yielding an average of 6.6 Fantasy points per game this season to opposing tight ends. If Shockey plays, consider him a possible bye-week replacement for Week 11.

Coach optimistic Shockey will play

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey missed a second straight practice Thursday because of an injury to his ribs, but coach Ron Rivera is optimistic Shockey will play Week 11 at Detroit. He said Shockey was feeling better Thursday.
Analysis: Shockey has just one catch in each of his last two games and is clearly the second-best TE on his team behind Greg Olsen. Shockey is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 11 at Detroit, even if he plays.

Shockey's MRI comes back clean

News: Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Jeremy Shockey's MRI on his injured ribs came back negative, but he still sat out practice Wednesday as the team preps for Week 11 at Detroit.
Analysis: Shockey has just one catch in each of his last two games and is clearly the second-best TE on his team behind Greg Olsen. Shockey is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 11 at Detroit, even if he plays.

Shockey needs an MRI

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey suffered an injury to his side on the first play of Sunday’s loss to the Titans. After receiving treatment, Shockey returned and caught a 19-yard pass in the fourth quarter, before going back to the bench. Coach Ron Rivera said Shockey likely will undergo an MRI Monday.
Analysis: Despite suffering a first-play injury Sunday against the Titans, Shockey came back and snared a 19-yard, fourth-quarter pass from Cam Newton , maintaining his streak of catching at least one pass in all 130 NFL games he has appeared. “He was a warrior,” coach Ron Rivera said. Unfortunately, Shockey has just one catch in each of his last two games and is clearly the second-best TE on his team behind Greg Olsen. Shockey is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 11 at Detroit, even if he plays.

Shockey held to one catch again

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey caught the only pass thrown his way Week 10 vs. Tennessee for a 19-yard gain. It was the second straight game he was held to a season-low one catch.
Analysis: At least Shockey's one catch in Week 8 went for a touchdown, which was a feat he couldn't repeat Week 10. However, it's quite clear he is the second option at TE behind Greg Olsen, who was targeted 11 times in Week 10. Shockey is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 11 at Detroit.

Can Shockey score in two straight?

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey doesn't have a touchdown in two career games against the Titans, his Week 10 opponent. However, Tennessee has allowed TEs to total five touchdowns in its last five games. TEs are also averaging 9.8 Fantasy points per week vs. Tennessee, which is tied for third-highest in the NFL. Shockey has 12 catches for 110 yards in his career vs. Tennessee.
Analysis: Shockey hauled in a 1-yard touchdown the last time he took the field in Week 8, but that ended up being his only catch of the game. Even though Greg Olsen is the team's top TE, Shockey is still good for about 2-4 catches per game. But since he has just one touchdown on the season, he is not as reliable as he used to be. Even with the favorable matchup, Shockey is a No. 2 Fantasy TE.

Shockey's single catch a big one

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey caught only one pass in a 24-21 loss to the Vikings in Week 8, but it was a big reception in several ways. First, his one-yard grab in the second quarter was for a touchdown that pulled Carolina into a 7-7 tie. It also wiped away the sting of having Steve Smith's apparent TD catch earlier in the drive pushed back to the Vikings' 1-yard line upon review. Finally, Shockey's reception extended his streak of having at least one catch in all 129 NFL games he has appeared in.
Analysis: Though Shockey reached the end zone for the first time all season, it was also the first time that he failed to make multiple catches or gain at least 20 receiving yards. After a bye in Week 9, Shockey could rebound in Week 10 against the Titans, but even at his best, he is no more than a No. 2 Fantasy TE.

Shockey looking to build a streak

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey has made four catches in each of the last two games, and in Week 8, he will look to extend the streak to three. If he gets four or more catches, it will be the first time since 2009 that Shockey will have caught at least four passes in three straight games. He will try to achieve the feat against the Vikings, who have allowed tight ends to average 6.1 receptions per week, which is the fourth-highest average in the league.
Analysis: Shockey has been piling up steady, but modest, yardage totals, on a week-to-week basis this season. Even if he manages to continue his receptions streak, he is not likely to contribute more than a handful of Fantasy points to owners in standard leagues. Consider him a low-end option, even with a good matchup in Week 8.

Shockey makes four Week 7 grabs

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey out-performed starter Greg Olsen in the Week 7 win over Washington on Sunday. Shockey finished the game with four catches for 32 yards. The four grabs finished second on the team to Steve Smith. Shockey was targeted four times in the game by QB Cam Newton.
Analysis: Shockey is gaining the confidence of Newton as he's being utilized more and more in the passing game in recent weeks. Still, Olsen remains the top tight end in the offense and we don't expect Shockey to be consistent enough for Fantasy usage at this time heading into Week 8 against the Vikings. Minnesota has been good at limiting the Fantasy production of opposing tight ends, so consider Shockey just a last-resort Fantasy option for Week 8.

Shockey looking for first touchdown

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey enters Week 7 against Washington looking for his first touchdown of the season. Shockey has yet to score, but did out-perform starting TE Greg Olsen last week in Atlanta with four catches for 60 yards. For Shockey, that was his best effort of the season. The Redskins allowed Brent Celek to come back from the dead in Week 6 for the Eagles with four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Washington has allowed two receiving touchdowns to tight ends this season.
Analysis: Shockey has 14 catches against Washington in his last five games against them. Over that span, Shockey has gone for 179 yards and no touchdowns. The Redskins haven't been great at stopping tight ends this season, but any positive production from the Panthers should go to Olsen. Shockey has underwhelmed for Carolina and is just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 7.

Shockey outperforms Olsen in Week 6

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey not only set a season high with 60 yards on four receptions Week 6 at Atlanta, but he was the team's second-leading receiver in the process, even outperforming fellow TE Greg Olsen. He also tied WR Steve Smith for second-most targets on the team with seven. Olsen actually led the way in that category with 10.
Analysis: If nothing else, Shockey showed in Week 6 that he isn't in jeopardy of disappearing from the passing game after averaging only 30.7 receiving yards in his previous three games. He still may not be quite the red-zone or underneath target that Olsen is, but he's a better downfield option, hauling in a 29-yard pass in Week 6 and averaging 14.4 yards per catch this season. Unfortunately, Shockey's presence will cut into Olsen's production and vice versa. Because Olsen remains the more likely of the two to score a touchdown on a week-to-week basis, Shockey is no more than a No. 2 Fantasy TE when the Panthers host the Redskins in Week 7.

Shockey's numbers trending down

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey has yet to catch more than three passes in a game this season, and his yardage has been on the decline through five games. He hasn't gone for 50 yards since Week 2, and he had a season-low 21 yards in Week 5. Still, he has a reasonable chance of putting up decent numbers on the road in Week 6 against a Falcons defense that ranks 28th against the pass, allowing 294.2 yards per game.
Analysis: Shockey's biggest shortcoming is that he's not even the primary tight end on his own team. Greg Olsen is becoming more and more of a receiving threat and is clearly the preferred target in the red zone. Shockey still has some measure of Fantasy appeal, but his limited upside on a week-to-week basis makes him nothing more than a No. 2 option.

Shockey quiet vs. former team

News: Panthers TE Jeremy Shockey was able to take the field Week 5 against his former team, the Saints, despite dealing with a head injury. Unfortunately, he didn't make much of an impact on the field. He totaled just 21 yards on three catches, with a long reception of 9 yards. Shockey almost scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Cam Newton pass was just out of his reach on a 6-yard play.
Analysis: Shockey did a lot of chirping leading up to and during the game, but unfortunately he couldn't back it up on the field. Shockey does get a few catches per game, but he is still posting modest numbers as the No. 2 TE in Carolina. Shockey has very low-end Fantasy appeal heading into Week 6 against the Falcons.
