News: In preparation for the new league year, the Steelers terminated the contracts of CB Bryant McFadden and WR Arnaz Battle and waived TE Miguel Chavis and LB Erik Clanton. The team did sign CB Myron Rolle, WR Juamorris Stewart and LB Brandon Hicks.
Analysis: Though the release of McFadden is mildly surprising and the signing of Rolle is mildly intriguing, the reality is that none of these moves should impact Fantasy owners in 2012.
News: WR Arnaz Battle injured his shoulder and ribs in the Jets game Sunday and is "touch and go" for Carolina, coach Mike Tomlin said.
Analysis: Battle hardly ever plays on offense anymore and shouldn't be considered for Fantasy. Keep him off rosters.
News: Steelers WR Arnaz Battle missed Wednesday's practice because of a minor knee injury. He is listed as day-to-day.
Analysis: Battle is in the mix to be the Steelers' third wide receiver, but is facing stiff competition from Antwaan Randle El, Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown. He has been effective when given the opportunity, catching 50 or more balls for the 49ers in both 2006 and 2007, but we don't see him getting that kind of opportunity with Pittsburgh this year. He can be ignored on Draft Day.
News: With the Steelers placing WR Limas Sweed on season-ending injured reserve, the team will look to rookie Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown and veterans Antwaan Randle El and Arnaz Battle to battle for playing time this summer. Sweed was in contention with these other players for the time and might have even been a favorite for it until he got hurt.
Analysis: It would be a surprise to see Battle register regular minutes for the Steelers as he's made his mark on special teams over his last few seasons (29 rec., 358 yards, no TDs in his last two years). He's not worth drafting in Fantasy play for now.
News: Steelers WR Arnaz Battle might have the chance at putting up some added stats following the trade of Santonio Holmes to the Jets. Antwaan Randle El and Limas Sweed will also compete for playing time.
Analysis: Battle hasn't been a relevant stat producer for years and is expected to work on special teams more than on offense. He's not worth drafting until he proves that he'll be a significant part of the Steelers' offense in 2010.
News: The Steelers have announced the signing of FS Will Allen and WR Arnaz Battle. Allen is expected to battle for the starting safety job opposite of Troy Polamalu while Battle is likely headed to special-teams duty.
Analysis: Neither of these players are expected to produce many stats in the first place. Keep them off of Fantasy rosters.
News:Arnaz Battle, Shaun Hill, Brandon Jones, Brit Miller, Brian Jennings and Jason Hill all failed to record a stat in the team's Week 16 game against the Lions.
Analysis: None of these players are worth owning in Fantasy and should remain on waivers for Week 17 against St. Louis.
News: San Francisco wide receiver Arnaz Battle returned two punts for an average of minus-.5 yards in the Week 15 loss at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Battle is just the team's punt returner and he's been pretty questionable at that with all the fumbles. He has no Fantasy value at this time and doesn't need to be owned Week 16 against the Lions.
News: San Francisco WR Arnaz Battle fumbled once again on punt return during the Week 14 win over the Cardinals on Monday night. Battle did not touch the ball offensively in the game.
Analysis: Battle is just the team's punt returner and he's been pretty questionable at that with all the fumbles. He has no Fantasy value at this time and doesn't need to be owned Week 15 when the 49ers play at Philadelphia.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle didn't catch a pass Week 13 at Seattle, but he did lose a fumble on a punt return. He has only five catches all season and none since Week 5.
Analysis: Battle clearly isn't a factor in the 49ers offense, so leave him on waivers for Week 14 against the Cardinals.
News: Niners QB Nate Davis, RB Michael Robinson, WR Isaac Bruce, WR Arnaz Battle, DB Nate Clements and DL Ricky Jean-Francois have all been listed as inactive for the team's Week 12 game against Jacksonville.
Analysis: Clements is a decent low-end starting LB in deeper IDP leagues when healthy and Bruce has some low-end appeal at the WR position. The rest of these players have little to no Fantasy value.
News: 49ers RB Moran Norris, RB Michael Robinson, RB Glen Coffee, TE Delanie Walker, WR Arnaz Battle, TE Brian Jennings and QB Shaun Hill all dressed for San Francisco's Week 11 loss to Green Bay but failed to record an offensive stat.
Analysis: None of these players are worth using in the majority of Fantasy leagues. Ignore them in Week 12 when the 49ers host the Jaguars.
News: 49ers FB Moran Norris, WR Brandon Jones, WR Arnaz Battle, LS/TE Brian Jennings, TE Delanie Walker and backup QB Shaun Hill all failed to record a stat Week 10 against the Bears.
Analysis: None of these players are worth using in the majority of Fantasy leagues. Ignore them in Week 11 when the 49ers play at the Packers.
News: 49ers RB Moran Norris, WR Brandon Jones, WR Arnaz Battle, TE Brian Jennings and QB Shaun Hill all failed to record a stat Week 9 against the Titans.
Analysis: None of these players are worth using in the majority of Fantasy leagues. Ignore them in Week 10 against the Bears.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle, RB Michael Robinson, WR Brandon Jones, QB Shaun Hill and TE Brian Jennings did not record an offensive stat in Week 8 at the Colts.
Analysis: None of these players are worth using in the majority of Fantasy leagues. Ignore them in Week 9 against the Titans.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle, RB Michael Robinson and FB Moran Norris didn't contribute offensive statistics Week 7 at Houston.
Analysis: None of these players ever do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle had a 9-yard reception Week 5 against the Falcons. He has only five catches all season.
Analysis: Battle isn't high on the depth chart and isn't the kind of receiver you can trust in Fantasy. Leave him on waivers. The 49ers have a bye in Week 6 before visiting the Texans in Week 7.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle totaled one catch for 8 yards during a Week 4 win against the Rams. He has four catches for 31 yards in four games.
Analysis: Battle does most of his damage these days as a punt returner for the 49ers. He might get a catch or two on a weekly basis, but clearly hasn't done enough to matter in Fantasy. The 49ers play the Falcons in Week 5.
News: Niners TE Delanie Walker, WR Arnaz Battle, WR Michael Spurlock and backup QB Alex Smith didn't contribute offensive statistics Week 3 at Minnesota.
Analysis: None of these players ever do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught a one-yard pass Week 2 against the Seahawks. He had only two catches in Week 1.
Analysis: Battle didn't begin the year high on the depth chart, and he likely won't have many big performances this season. Leave him on waivers for Week 3 at Minnesota.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught two passes for 22 yards in the season opener Sunday at Arizona.
Analysis: Battle doesn't begin the year high on the depth chart, and he likely won't have many big performances this season. Leave him on waivers for Week 2 against the Seahawks.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (shoulder) has been ruled out for Friday's preseason game against the Chargers.
Analysis: The last thing Battle wants to deal with is an injury after he was limited to nine games in 2008. He is a hard worker and is likely to land on the 53-man roster. However, we are not sure if Battle has 50-catch potential anymore. He is merely a low-end Fantasy reserve to begin the season.
News: 49ers QB Shaun Hill said Tuesday that WR Arnaz Battle is becoming one of his favorite receivers on third down. "He's so strong with the ball in his hands," Hill said. "He's tough to bring down with one guy, and he's always falling forward. He's probably one of the better yards-after-contact guys that we have in the receiving corps. He's such a physical and strong guy out there and those things obviously help you out quite a bit on third down."
Analysis: Battle is starting to play well for the 49ers with Michael Crabtree still unsigned and Josh Morgan struggling. In deep leagues, Battle could be worth a late-round flier.
News: In the third preseason game at Dallas on Saturday, 49ers WR Arnaz Battle led the team in receiving. Battle had four catches for 54 yards.
Analysis: Battle has a chance to earn a role with the team as long as rookie Michael Crabtree remains a holdout. We don't expect Battle to do much this season, but he could be worth keeping an eye on to add off the waiver wire during the year.
News:Arnaz Battle survived when the San Francisco 49ers signed four-time Pro Bowl free agent Isaac Bruce before last season. Battle didn't budge when the team brought in Brandon Jones this offseason. Battle has been a constant for San Francisco in an ever-changing receiving corps, a model of steadiness both in his play and his hard-nosed, do-anything attitude. Those are the kinds of players Mike Singletary likes to have, though there were questions whether Battle would stick around this time. The 49ers have their most depth at wideout in the last decade, so Battle's status coming into his seventh training camp wasn't clear. "Every year I feel like I'm fighting for a job," Battle said after a recent practice. "There's only so much I can control. I will continue to do what I do. I know my role on this team." Now, things are a little different. He's worked his way up the depth chart. Jones is out until late September with a broken right shoulder and unsigned first-round pick Michael Crabtree is still a no-show, making Battle's veteran presence that much more important to an organization that's endured a franchise-worst six straight losing seasons.
Analysis: Battle's been getting his share of work lately in camp. He started the team's exhibition opener last week against Denver. The former college quarterback at Notre Dame took shotgun snaps Wednesday morning in the Niners' version of the wildcat offense -- or "Taser" as new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye refers to it in his playbook. "Steady, smart guy that can do a lot of things," Raye said. "He can handle the ball as a runner. He's a good intermediate-route, possession receiver and he's sneaky fast." Battle is relieved to finally be healthy again. He finished last season on injured reserve with a fracture in his right foot that required surgery. He had two screws removed from the foot in the spring. The seventh-year pro played just nine games in 2008, catching 24 passes for 318 yards while struggling with injuries. He re-aggravated his foot in a 34-13 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 26 in Week 8 and didn't play again. In each of the previous two seasons, he started 15 of 16 games. He led the receivers in catches in 2006 and '07. Battle might be a good worker, but he's never been a monster Fantasy receiver because his stats have been limited. That's expected to be the case again in 2009, so keep him off of rank lists.
News: Around the league, it's generally known as the "Wildcat" formation. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye refers to his version as the "Taser." By any name, it's a new wrinkle for a team aiming to upgrade its abysmal offensive numbers of recent years. "Since the pads have gone on, it was our first foray into it," Raye said Wednesday after the 49ers began 11-on-11 team drills with receiver-kick returner Michael Spurlock lined up at quarterback in shotgun formation and running back Frank Gore lined up in the slot at receiver. With receiver Arnaz Battle also taking some direct snaps at quarterback, the 49ers proceeded to run about a dozen plays with the unique formation that had quarterbacks Shaun Hill, Alex Smith and Damon Huard lining up far wide at receiver. Spurlock and Battle either ran with the ball or handed off to Gore and running back Glen Coffee. Spurlock even threw a pass out of the formation, completing it to Isaac Bruce.
Analysis: Battle has a chance to earn a role with the team as long as rookie Michael Crabtree remains a holdout. We don't expect Battle to do much this season, but he could be worth keeping an eye on to add off the waiver wire during the year.
News: 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said Wednesday he likes what WR Arnaz Battle has done so far in training camp. "I like what I've seen of him," Raye said. "Arnaz Battle is a bigger, stronger, more physical receiver, probably in the line of his true qualities are as a receiver from the transformation that he's made from college to being a receiver."
Analysis: Battle has a chance to earn a role with the team as long as rookie Michael Crabtree remains a holdout. We don't expect Battle to do much this season, but he could be worth keeping an eye on to add off the waiver wire during the year.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle, who has been the star of training camp the past few days after a quiet start, said Monday his early struggles had to do with building confidence that he was fully recovered from offseason foot injury.
Analysis: Battle has a chance to earn a role with the team as long as rookie Michael Crabtree remains a holdout. We don't expect Battle to do much this season, but he could be worth keeping an eye on to add off the waiver wire during the year.
News: The Press Democrat reports 49ers WR Arnaz Battle continues to rehab a foot injury during the offseason that forced him out of the final half of last season. The report also says that Battle, in the final year of his contract, might have trouble making the team. In an unofficial depth chart, Battle is behind Josh Morgan, Isaac Bruce, Michael Crabtree, Brandon Jones and Jason Hill.
Analysis: We'd be surprised if Battle didn't make the team, but he has minimal Fantasy value this year. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: The San Francisco 49ers put receiver Arnaz Battle on injured reserve Saturday with a sprained foot, ending his season. Battle, a six-year NFL veteran, played in just nine games this season, catching 24 passes for 318 yards while struggling with injuries. He returned to the 49ers' lineup last week against the Jets after missing four games, but aggravated his foot injury.
Analysis: Battle doesn't get the ball thrown his way enough even when healthy to matter in Fantasy play. Now that his season is over, you can ignore him in all Fantasy formats.
News: WR Arnaz Battle has been ruled out of Week 15 at Miami with a foot injury.
Analysis: Battle doesn't get the ball thrown his way enough even when healthy to matter in Fantasy play. Leave him on waivers.
News: Niners TE Sean Ryan, WR Arnaz Battle, TE Brian Jennings and QB J.T. O'Sullivan didn't record offensive statistics Week 14 against Jets.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for Week 15 at Miami.
News: The 49ers have announced the inactives for their Week 13 game at Buffalo. Not in uniform will be: QB Jamie Martin (third QB), DB Allen Rossum (ankle), DB Reggie Smith (coach's decision), DB Dashon Goldson (knee), WR Arnaz Battle (foot) and WR Josh Morgan (groin).
Analysis: Battle is the only guy in this list with any Fantasy value, and his is very minimal. Continue to ignore all these guys for the foreseeable future.
News: 49ers WR Josh Morgan (groin), WR Arnaz Battle (foot) and DB Dashon Goldson (knee) have all been ruled out for Week 12 at Dallas.
Analysis: Morgan had come on as of late and was gaining Fantasy momentum before this injury popped up. He and Battle are just low-end Fantasy WRs when healthy. Goldson has little to no value. Keep them reserved Week 12.
News: The 49ers listed QB Jamie Martin, DB Dashon Goldson, TE Delanie Walker, LB Ahmad Brooks and WR Arnaz Battle among their inactives for Week 11 against the Rams.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (foot) and DB Dashon Goldson (knee) have been ruled out for Week 11 vs. St. Louis.
Analysis: Battle contributes on offense when healthy, but since he is so erratic with his performances, he has marginal Fantasy value when healthy. Goldson pretty much has no value. Keep these players reserved Week 11.
News: 49ers DB Dashon Goldson, QB Jamie Martin, DB Reggie Smith, LB Ahmad Brooks, TE Sean Ryan and WR Arnaz Battle have all been ruled inactive for Week 10 at Arizona.
Analysis: Battle is the only player among the inactives that has some Fantasy value when he is on the field. Most of the these players are reserves for the 49ers and play a marginal role when active. Continue to keep them reserved Week 10 and likely in the coming weeks as well.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle will miss the San Francisco 49ers' game at Arizona on Monday night with a sprained right foot. Battle, the 49ers' second-leading receiver with 24 catches for 318 yards, has played in 42 consecutive games. The six-year veteran also occasionally returns kickoffs and punts while serving as San Francisco's No. 3 receiver in most offensive sets.
Analysis: Keep Battle reserved in all leagues for Week 10 at Arizona. Even when healthy, he has minimal Fantasy value.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught three passes for 26 yards Week 8 against the Seahawks before leaving with a foot injury. He now has 116 yards receiving in four games since his 120-yard performance.
Analysis: Clearly, Battle hasn't become a consistent contributor on offense, and this foot injury can only set him back. Keep an eye on his progress, but he remains nothing more than a low-end flier in Fantasy. The 49ers have a bye in Week 9 before visiting the Cardinals in Week 10.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught two passes for 42 yards in Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants. Both catches went for 21 yards.
Analysis: Battle was thrown to five times in the game and was featured on a few deep passes. He is more of a kick returner than a receiver, but he has the potential to be used as more than that. Leave him on the waiver wire for now, but continue to monitor his play.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught three passes for 39 yards in Week 6 against the Eagles.
Analysis: Battle has had one outstanding week -- against the Saints in Week 4 -- and five mediocre ones. That makes him a very low-end Fantasy WR option. We don't suggest starting him in Week 7 against the Giants in New York.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle, one week after catching seven passes for 120 yards, caught only one pass for nine yards in a Week 5 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Battle was always a candidate to produce next to nothing in Week 5, coming off such a big week and facing a solid Patriots pass defense, and he did exactly that. The 49ers host the Eagles in Week 6 and Battle should continue to be ignored.
News: The San Francisco 49ers host the Patriots in Week 5 and WR Arnaz Battle hopes to have another week like he did in Week 4 against the Saints. Battle caught seven passes for 120 yards to lead the team. New England's pass defense, however, is better by far than New Orleans'.
Analysis: Don't expect anything close to 120 yards in Week 5. The Patriots allow just 193 yards through the air per game and Isaac Bruce is the Niners' No. 1 option. If you need an emergency WR option in Fantasy, consider picking Battle up. Otherwise, he's just a No. 5 WR option for Week 5 and he probably shouldn't be starting for your Fantasy team.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle led the team with seven catches for 120 yards Sunday at New Orleans.
Analysis: Battle had a great game for the 49ers, who seem to have a different receiver step up every week. Still, Battle was a clutch player for the 49ers in 2007 and could be worth adding in most leagues for Week 5. Don't plan on starting Battle in Week 5 against New England.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught three passes for 25 yards in Week 3 vs. Detroit. The Niners threw for 189 yards and eight different receivers caught a pass. Battle also rushed once for 18 yards.
Analysis: Battle has seven catches over his last two games, hardly enough to create a stir in Fantasy leagues. He's not a primary option in the passing game and until that changes he should be left on the waiver wire.
News: San Francisco WR Arnaz Battle caught four passes for 44 yards on Sunday in an overtime win against the Seattle Seahawks.
Analysis: Battle is still battling for catches with Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson but the Niners looked like a lot sharper passing team on Sunday with QB J.T. O'Sullivan racking up over 300 yards through the air. Still, Battle is the third option, at best, and remains someone to avoid in Fantasy in Week 3 against the Lions.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught one early pass on Sunday against the Cardinals and that was pretty much it. Battle's catch went for 16 yards.
Analysis: He'll be battling for catches all season long on a team that doesn't figure to put up very good passing stats. That sounds like a poor Fantasy option to us. Don't pick him up or start him in Week 2 as the Niners travel to Seattle.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (hamstring) was able to play during Friday's preseason finale against the Chargers. He had one catch for 25 yards. Battle finished the preseason with three catches for 58 yards.
Analysis: Battle is coming off a 50-catch, 600-yard season. He also had five touchdowns in 2007. However, he is still battling for receptions heading into 2008 and is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy reserve.
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports that 49ers WR Arnaz Battle will play in the club's preseason finale vs. San Diego. Battle had been battling a hamstring injury for much of the preseason.
Analysis: Battle is jockeying for playing time this summer but has never been anything better than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire. He's not worth a pick in drafts unless it's with a late-round pick in the deepest of drafts.
News: 49ers wide receivers Arnaz Battle (hamstring), Ashley Lelie (calf) and Bryant Johnson (hamstring) did not travel with the team to Chicago for Thursday's preseason game against the Bears and remain questionable for the team's final preseason game on Aug. 29 against the Chargers.
Analysis: Battle is jockeying for playing time this summer but has never been anything better than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire. He's not worth a pick in drafts unless it's with a late-round pick in the deepest of drafts. Without question, Lelie is one of the most over-hyped receivers in Fantasy Football. He can run one route fairly well and the rest with some uncertainty. He is not a reliable Fantasy option even though he's entering a contract year with the Niners. Treat Johnson like a middle-end reserve Fantasy WR with potential to be a weekly starter in deeper leagues. Think late-round flier on Johnson. However all three need to get healthy and see some action before they have any value at all.
News: According to the San Francisco official team Web site, 49ers wide receivers Arnaz Battle (hamstring), Ashley Lelie (calf) and Bryant Johnson (hamstring) will not travel with the team to Chicago for Thursday's preseason game against the Bears. Running back Michael Robinson will also be out with a knee injury and safety Lewis Baker with a thigh injury.
Treat Johnson like a middle-end reserve Fantasy WR with potential to be a weekly starter in deeper leagues. Think late-round flier on Johnson. However all three need to get healthy and see some action before they have any value at all. Robinson and Baker don't figure to see enough of the field to be considered viable Fantasy options at their positions.
News: The Niners were without WRs Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie and Bryant Johnson in Saturday's preseason contest against the Green Bay Packers.
Analysis: Battle is jockeying for playing time this summer but has never been anything better than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire. News:49ers head coach Mike Nolan said Wednesday that WR Arnaz Battle will miss the club's second preseason game vs. Green Bay with a hamstring injury. Nolan wouldn't speculate on the severity of the injury.
Analysis: Battle is jockeying for playing time this summer but has never been anything better than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire. He's not worth a pick in drafts unless it's with a late-round pick in the deepest of drafts.
News: The Mercury News reports the 49ers first depth chart lists Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson as the starting receivers, with Arnaz Battle listed behind Bruce and Jason Hill penciled in behind Johnson.
Analysis: Bruce and Johnson have the chance to be decent sleepers in 2008 with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz now calling plays. Consider taking both with a late-round pick in all leagues. Battle and Hill should be left on the waiver wire, but both could be worth adding during the year if Martz works his usual magic with receivers.
News:Arnaz Battle returned to the 49ers' practice field Monday, blaming the hubbub that surrounded his one-week absence on his "lack of communication," reports the San Jose Mercury News. The team's leading receiver a year ago, Battle mystified coach Mike Nolan last week by failing to show up at the first week of organized team activities. The sessions are voluntary, but Battle failed to notify the 49ers that he would be remaining at his Dallas home to take care of what he described as a personal situation. His absence raised the question of whether Battle was protesting the diminished role he is likely to inherit after the off-season acquisitions of receivers Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce. Battle brushed off that theory Monday. Battle was limited in practice but said he will be around for the remaining seven sessions over the next few weeks.
Analysis: Battle is jockeying for playing time with Johnson and Bruce as well as Ashley Lelie and others. Look for Battle to be the No. 3 option in San Francisco. He remains a No. 4 Fantasy option in 2008, and hopefully he will grasp Mike Martz's offense enough to be a decent addition off the waiver wire.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports 49ers WR Arnaz Battle, who missed the first two days of this week's practices, is expected to rejoin the team Monday, a club spokesman said. His absence, previously unexplained, was attributed to "personal matters."
Analysis: Battle, a starter the past two seasons, is playing on a five-year contract extension that runs through 2009. He had 50 catches for 600 yards and five touchdowns last year. During mini-camp last month, Battle split time at the No. 2 receiver position with newcomer Isaac Bruce. Another new arrival, Bryant Johnson, is in line to be the other starting receiver. Battle was a nice waiver-wire addition in 2007 but was likely to lose his starting spot this year with Bruce and Johnson on the roster. Don't plan on drafting Battle this year. If he plays well again like last year, then add him off the waiver wire.
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports WR Arnaz Battle, the 49ers' leading receiver last season, has decided to skip the team's voluntary workouts that started Monday and is instead training at home in Dallas. The development surprised Coach Mike Nolan, who said he had not spoken with Battle and was unaware of why the receiver decided not to attend the organized team activities. "I'm not sure what his issue is," Nolan said. Battle, a starter the past two seasons, is playing on a five-year contract extension that runs through 2009. He had 50 catches for 600 yards and five touchdowns last year. During mini-camp last month, Battle split time at the No. 2 receiver position with newcomer Isaac Bruce. Another new arrival, Bryant Johnson, is in line to be the other starting receiver.
Analysis: Battle was a nice waiver-wire addition in 2007 but was likely to lose his starting spot this year with Bruce and Johnson on the roster. Don't plan on drafting Battle, especially if he's not showing up to learn the new offense in San Francisco. If he plays well again like last year, then add him off the waiver wire.
News: The 49ers signed WR Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce this offseason, which could mean Arnaz Battle is now the No. 3 option. Battle has been the 49ers' most consistent receiver for the past two seasons, starting 30 games over that period. Last year, Battle caught 50 passes for 600 yards (12.0 avg.) and five touchdowns.
Analysis: Battle was a decent addition in most Fantasy leagues last year, but he takes a step back now in Fantasy leagues with the additions of Johnson and Bruce. Still, Battle now plays for offensive coordinator Mike Martz, so you never know how he will use Battle. But Battle also has a poor quarterback situation with Alex Smith as the potential starter. Don't plan on drafting Battle in 2008, but he could be a decent addition off the waiver wire at some point.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle proved to be the club's most productive receiver in 2007. That's a big statement, but it's really not saying much: Battle caught 50 passes for 600 yards (12.0 avg.) and five touchdowns. Of his 50 grabs, 27 were for first downs, but just six were for 20-plus yards.
Analysis: Battle is a nice receiver, and it will help that he'll play in Mike Martz's offense in 2008, so the potential is there for him to get closer to 1,000 yards receiving. We think Battle is a guy worth keeping an eye on this offseason because of the success many middle-of-the-road receivers have had in Martz's offense. Think late-round sleeper for Battle right now.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle went through limited practice both all week, but the team lists him as probable for Week 17 at Cleveland. He played in Week 16 despite missing some practice time because of the same injury.
Analysis: Battle had a three-game touchdown streak at one point this season, but he's at best a No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 17, assuming he plays. Since he played Week 16, we think he'll suit up again.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle had no catches Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Battle has played well this season and should bounce back in Week 17 at Cleveland. Consider Battle a No. 3 Fantasy option against the Browns.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 16 vs. Tampa Bay. He went through limited practice reps all week. Battle saw his touchdown streak end at three games after failing to find the end zone Week 15 against the Bengals. Battle, who came into the game as probable with an ankle injury, caught just two passes for 23 yards. His longest catch of the day went for 17 yards.
Analysis: Despite the poor game, Battle has been the 49ers' most consistent wide receiver in 2007. That's not saying a lot. He has caught fewer than three passes just five times, but has done so in last two games. Battle is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy flier heading into Week 16 against the Bucs. He is expected to play.

News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle saw his touchdown streak end at three games after failing to find the end zone Week 15 against the Bengals.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (ankle) is active and starting Week 15 vs. Cincinnati after being listed as probable on the injury report. Battle extended his touchdown streak to three games with a 5-yard score Week 14 against the Vikings. His only other catch in the game went for eight yards. In his last three games, he has seven catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: Battle will take the field with Shaun Hill slinging passes for the 49ers. He did a nice job in relief Week 14, but is still a very inexperienced QB. Battle is the clear No. 1 WR in San Fran ahead of Darrell Jackson, but should be considered nothing more than a No. 4 Fantasy WR because of the 49ers' inept passing offense.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, but returned to limited reps Thursday and was listed as probable on Friday for Week 15 vs. Cincinnati. Battle extended his touchdown streak to three games with a 5-yard score Week 14 against the Vikings. His only other catch in the game went for eight yards. In his last three games, he has seven catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

In his last three games, he has seven catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: Battle, if healthy, will take the field with Shaun Hill slinging passes for the 49ers. He did a nice job in relief Week 14, but is still a very inexperienced QB. News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle heads into Week 15's meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals in search of a fourth straight game with a touchdown. He only has six catches over his last three games, but half of them have been for touchdowns.
Analysis: Battle is unlikely to have Trent Dilfer throwing him the ball on Sunday, as Shaun Hill, the sixth-year pro out of Maryland, will get the start if Dilfer can't recover from a concussion sustained in Week 14. Still, Battle is the clear No. 1 WR in San Fran ahead of Darrell Jackson but should be considered nothing more than a No. 4 Fantasy WR because of the inept passing offense he is part of.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle extended his touchdown streak to three games with a 5-yard score Week 14 against the Vikings. His only other catch in the game went for eight yards. In his last three games, he has seven catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: Get ready for this Fantasy owners. The 49ers' most reliable wide receiver this season has been Battle. He has five touchdowns and more than 550 receiving yards. Not great numbers, but doable for a guy who plays in the worst offense in the NFL. Consider Battle nothing more than a No. 4 Fantasy WR heading into Week 15 against the Bengals.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle comes into Week 14's game vs. Minnesota with touchdowns in consecutive weeks and has a great chance to put up some nice Fantasy numbers on Sunday against the league's worst pass defense.
Analysis: Battle hasn't been too affected by the QB mess in San Fran and is always a big-play threat with his speed. He should be good for five catches and 60 yards in Week 14 and might even complete his touchdown hat trick. Consider him a No. 4 Fantasy WR or 'flex' option against the Vikings.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught four passes for 51 yards in Week 13 at Carolina, including a 20-yard touchdown. He also rushed once for a loss of three yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Battle has been very spotty with his efforts this season and he was coming off a 1-catch, 57-yard performance in Week 12 vs. Arizona. He did score a touchdown with that catch, however, and has been the team's best wide receiver option. The Niners offense isn't very good and Battle should only be considered a No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 14 vs. Minnesota. The Vikings have allowed the most pass yards in the NFL.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle has stepped up over his last seven games, totaling 27 catches for 371 yards and three touchdowns. That averages out to about 50 yards per game -- pedestrian numbers, but it's been enough to make Battle the best receiver on the Niners and a fairly reliable low-end Fantasy WR in deeper leagues. Battle plays at Carolina in Week 13, a team that's allowed three receiving TDs in each of their last two games and a team with a banged-up secondary.
Analysis: Battle is a sneaky No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 13. He may only deliver 60-70 yards, but he is always a threat to score a touchdown, particularly in favorable matchups (he scored on a deep bomb last week at Arizona). Give Battle some thought this week.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle made just one catch Week 12 against the Cardinals, but made it count. His 57-yard grab in the third quarter went for six points as he barreled his way into the end zone. It was his third rushing touchdown this season and first since Week 7.
Analysis: Battle had two or more catches in his previous 10 games before settling on just one catch Week 12. Well, at least he made a mark. Battle doesn't have great stats and is nothing more than a low-end No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 13 against the Panthers.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle caught six passes for 86 yards Week 11 against the Rams, giving him back-to-back games with at least 70 yards receiving.
Analysis: In a season of despair for the 49ers' offense, Battle has been a glowing 6-foot-1 pile of hope. He's averaged 52.3 receiving yards over the last six games, which doesn't sound like much, but for the 49ers, it is. He also has two touchdowns over that span. He makes for one of the few reasonable Fantasy options on a poor offensive team, but we still can't consider him anything more than a No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 12 at Arizona.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle had four catches for 78 of the 114 yards QB Alex Smith distributed through the air Week 10 at Seattle. He also lost two yards on one carry.
Analysis: In a season of despair for the 49ers' offense, Battle has been a glowing 6-foot-1 pile of hope. He's averaged 45.6 receiving yards over the last five games, which doesn't sound like much, but for the 49ers, it is. He also has two touchdowns over that span. He makes for one of the few reasonable Fantasy options on a poor offensive team, but we still can't consider him anything more than a low-end No. 3 WR for Week 11 against the Rams.
News: It's not much, but 49ers WR Arnaz Battle has caught at least three passes in each of his last five games, scoring two touchdowns in that span. Battle's chances have improved because of a lack of receiving weapons in San Francisco. But with TE Vernon Davis drawing some coverage, Battle might see a slight rise in production. This week, he plays at Seattle, who rank 25th against the pass.
Analysis: Battle is a deep sleeper for Week 10 and might even be good enough to start as a No. 3 WR in the deepest of Fantasy leagues. Consider other options, but go with Battle if you're in a pinch.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught four passes for 35 yards in Week 9 at Atlanta.
Analysis: Battle has been the best wideout on a very bad pass offense. He is not the team's best receiving option at the moment, however, with that honor going to tight end Vernon Davis. Consider Battle little more than a low-end No. 3 receiver for Week 10 at Seattle.
News: Niners WR Arnaz Battle will play at Atlanta in Week 9 and face off against the Falcons' 20th-ranked pass defense. But will it matter? The Niners' passing offense ranks last in the league and Battle has been only good for about three catches per week at around 10 yards per catch.
Analysis: At best, Battle is a No. 3 Fantasy WR (and a decent bye-week replacement) even with the favorable matchup. Remember, the Falcons are coming off a bye and know they have a shot to pick up a rare win against the Niners. Don't be excited to start Battle -- do it if you must.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught only three balls for 22 yards in San Francisco's 31-10 loss to the Saints in Week 8.
Analysis: Battle has only caught more than three passes twice this season, so his Week 8 output wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Only use Battle as a last resort Fantasy WR option in Week 9 when San Francisco in Week 9.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle had a team-high six catches and 57 yards in Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants, including a 17-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Analysis: Battle now has touchdown catches in back-to-back games and has emerged as a primary target in the offense. When the 49ers take on the Saints in Week 8, consider Battle in larger Fantasy leagues as a third receiver.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught three passes for 36 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown, in San Francisco's 9-7 loss to the Ravens in Week 5.
Analysis: Battle's touchdown was his first since Week 10 of last season and it brought the Niners to within two points of the Ravens, but Joe Nedney missed the go-ahead kick. Battle and every other 49ers offensive player not named Frank Gore should be benched for Week 7, after their bye week, unless Alex Smith is back from his shoulder injury.
News: San Francisco WRs Darrell Jackson (three catches for 38 yards), Taylor Jacobs (one catch for 14 yards), Arnaz Battle (three catches for 19 yards) and TE Delanie Walker (one catch for seven yards) all saw action in the Week 4 23-3 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: With Alex Smith hurting and Trent Dilfer struggling, it's going to be hard for these players to have any big weeks Fantasy-wise in 2007, although Jackson is always capable of something special. We wouldn't suggest starting any of them in Week 5 against Baltimore.
News: Notable 49ers players from Week 3 at Pittsburgh include: WR Arnaz Battle (8 rush yards, 27 receiving yards), RB Michael Robinson (8 rush yards), FB Zak Keasey (4 rush yards) and TE Delanie Walker (19 receiving yards).
Analysis: Of these players, only Battle is worth a reserve spot, although Robinson is a decent insurance policy for those owners who have Frank Gore. The Niners play vs. Seattle in Week 4.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (groin) is listed as probable for Week 3 at Pittsburgh. Battle went through a full practice session Friday after limited reps on Thursday and no reps on Wednesday.
Analysis: Battle has played in the first two games, totaling seven catches for 77 yards. Battle continues to have limited Fantasy value heading into Week 3. It is probably best to keep him reserved outside of the largest Fantasy leagues.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (groin) did not practice Wednesday, but returned to limited reps Thursday as the team prepares for Week 3 at Pittsburgh. Battle has played in the first two games, totaling seven catches for 77 yards.
Analysis: Battle continues to have limited Fantasy value heading into Week 3. It is probably best to keep him reserved outside of the largest Fantasy leagues.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (groin) did not practice Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 3 at Pittsburgh. Battle has played in the first two games, totaling seven catches for 77 yards.
Analysis: Battle continues to have limited Fantasy value heading into Week 3. It is probably best to keep him reserved outside of the largest Fantasy leagues.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle had two catches for 17 yards Sunday against the Rams.
Analysis: Battle has minimal Fantasy value and should not be started in Week 3 against the Steelers.
News: Arnaz Battle had five receptions for 60 yards in Week 1 against the Cardinals, but his biggest play was a one-yard touchdown in the final minute to propel the 49ers to a comeback win.
Analysis: Battle remains a low-end No. 3 or 4 Fantasy receiver or 'flex' option heading into Week 2 at St. Louis.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught 59 passes for 686 yards and three touchdowns in 2006. He also accumulated 25 rush yards and attempted a pass.
Analysis: Battle was usually good for 40-to-50 yards per week, but not much else. Consider him a late-round flier in 2007 league play.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught four passes for 56 yards in Week 17 at Denver. He also rushed once on a reverse for a gain for four yards.
Analysis: The former Notre Dame standout was useful as a No. 3 or 4 Fantasy WR or as a 'flex' option in 2006. In 2007 drafts, he'll be a decent option in the middle-to-late rounds.
News: Arnaz Battle had seven receptions for 55 yards in Week 16 against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Battle is a decent No. 3 or 4 Fantasy receiver or 'flex' option for Week 17 at Denver, as he'll see more work with Antonio Bryant (suspension) sidelined.
News: FOXSports.com reports that 49ers WR Antonio Bryant has been suspended four games for violating the league's Substance Abuse Policy stemming from his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving in November. That means that Arnaz Battle will become the primary receiving option for the Niners for the rest of the season, with WR Bryan Gilmore and TE Vernon Davis also helping out QB Alex Smith.
Analysis: Smith's Fantasy value takes a small hit as Bryant was a decent deep threat who would potentially pitch in on a weekly basis. Battle deserves consideration as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy WR with Bryant out of the picture, while Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy TE. Using Smith or Gilmore is not advised in Week 16 Fantasy play.
News: Arnaz Battle had five receptions for 97 yards yards in Week 15 at Seattle.
Analysis: Battle is a solid No. 3 or 4 receiver or 'flex' option in most Fantasy leagues for Week 16 against Arizona.
News: San Francisco QB Alex Smith, his receivers and kicker Joe Nedney could be playing in bad weather Thursday night at Seattle. The weather report in Seattle as of Thursday morning is rain and possible wind gusts up to 65 mph.
Analysis: Keep an eye on the weather report throughout the day to see if it's a good idea to play Smith, Antonio Bryant, Arnaz Battle, Vernon Davis or Nedney. Only Davis would be considered a safe play in bad weather, but continue to monitor the situation.
News: Notable 49ers players from Week 14 include: RB Maurice Hicks (3 rush yards), WR Antonio Bryant (39-yard catch), TE Delanie Walker (30 receiving yards), WR Arnaz Battle (11-yard catch), WR Taylor Jacobs (5-yard catch) and RB Michael Robinson (4-yard catch).
Analysis: Bryant and Battle are low-end options in deeper leagues at receiver. Everyone else shouldn't be on a Fantasy roster except for Robinson -- in keeper leagues. The Niners play at Seattle in Week 15.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught four passes for 43 yards in Week 13 at New Orleans.
Analysis: Battle is best used as a No. 3 receiver or 'flex' option in leagues of 12-plus teams. He'll face Green Bay in Week 14.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle has 38 receptions this season, but he ranks tied for ninth in the league with 18 catches on third downs.
Analysis: Consider Battle a No. 3 WR for Week 13 against the Saints.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle had three receptions for 36 yards in a Week 12 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Battle had surgery on his hand early in the week, but was able to play against the Rams. Consider Battle a low-end No. 3 WR for Week 13 against the Saints.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle (hand) is listed as probable for Week 12 at St. Louis.
Analysis: Battle played in Week 11 with a broken hand and managed to haul in a TD. He had surgery on the hand Monday, and is expected to play against the Rams. Consider Battle a low-end No. 3 WR for Week 12.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle, who caught a touchdown pass against Seattle, underwent surgery Monday to place two small screws in his broken hand. Battle, who was hurt last week but played against the Seahawks with a protective glove on his hand, will wear a cast during practice before going back to the glove in St. Louis.
Analysis: Battle will likely be on the 49ers injury report when it comes out on Wednesday. Consider Battle a low-end No. 3 WR for Week 12 against the Rams.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle had one carry for 12 yards and five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown against Seattle.
Analysis: Consider Battle a No. 3 WR for Week 12 against the Rams.
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports that 49ers WR Arnaz Battle has a broken hand that will require surgery but will play vs. Seattle in Week 11 despite the injury. Moreover, he doesn't expect to miss any playing time after the surgical procedure. He will wear a padded glove to protect the broken hand. "Any time you fracture a bone, you're going to have some soreness, but it's something they feel play on it, it's not going to affect me down the line in any kind of way," Battle said. "It's something that can be fixed easily and something I can go on with."
Analysis: Battle shouldn't be used for Fantasy purposes this weekend. Keep him off active rosters.
News: The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports Arnaz Battle has a small fracture on the top of his left hand, but that is not expected to sideline him for Week 11 against Seattle.
Analysis: Battle suffered the injury in Week 10's win at Detroit. When healthy, Battle is only worth consideration as a Fantasy reserve.

Analysis: Battle hasn't been a consistent enough player to be counted on for Fantasy purposes at this time.

Analysis: Battle has posted some nice weeks, but unless the Niners are going to play in a perceived shootout, he shouldn't be used in Fantasy play.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle caught five passes for 39 yards in Week 6 vs. San Diego.
Analysis: Battle has come on a bit after getting off to a slow start. He'll have a week off before facing a tough Bears defense in Week 8. Look to other alternatives.
News: The 49ers got some unexpected help on Sunday from WR Arnaz Battle, who caught two touchdown passes in the team's 34-20 win over the Raiders. He finished with four catches and 37 yards.
Analysis: Battle has put together a decent season with 15 receptions, 194 yards and two touchdowns. He is developing some rapport with QB Alex Smith and that could develop into a nice combo as the season progresses. Consider him a reserve Fantasy receiver in the deepest of leagues at this point.
News: The 49ers could not get into rhythm offensively vs. the Chiefs in Week 4 and it showed in a 41-0 loss. WR Arnaz Battle had three receptions for 34 yards and led the team in both receptions and yards.
Analysis: There will not be many weeks when Battle leads the 49ers in receiving yards. He still remains a poor Fantasy option.
News: Arnaz Battle caught three passes for 78 yards in Week 2 vs. St. Louis.
Analysis: Battle caught a 56-yard pass, which is where he got most of his yards on the afternoon. Battle is a great punt returner and does get a few catches here and there. Right now, he just doesn't have the value to start at WR on your team.
News: 49ers WR Arnaz Battle returned a punt 60 yards and had two catches for 17 yards in the Niners' Week 1 loss to Arizona.
Analysis: Battle is a great punt returner and does get a few catches here and there. But right now he just doesn't have the value to start at WR on your team.
News: Arnaz Battle (knee) was able to start Friday's preseason finale vs. San Diego, but he did not record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: Battle isn't a No. 1 wideout at the pro level, but being a starter does give him some value, particularly in deeper leagues.
News: The Sacramento Bee reports that WR Arnaz Battle (knee) is confident he'll be at full speed and ready to start the NFL season on time. The receiver out of Notre Dame is on a regimen of lubricating gel injections that are designed to help his ailing knee, but he's held off on two of the five shots since his knee has felt good recently. Battle has been in and out of practice this month and has been replaced in preseason lineups by Bryan Gilmore, though that's a temporary issue. "It's frustrating, but I have confidence I can go out there and do it," Battle said. "I feel if I'm 100 percent -- and my main focus is to get to that point -- then everything else will take care of itself."
Analysis: Battle isn't a No. 1 wideout at the pro level, but being a starter does give him some value, particularly in deeper leagues. Still, he's worth no more than a late-round choice as a No. 3 or 4 Fantasy WR at this point in time.
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports that 49ers WR Arnaz Battle sat out practice on Monday after taking hyalgan injections on Saturday. Players who take the injection should rest for a few days. Battle is battling swelling in his right knee, and the injection is to help it. Despite being hurt, 49ers head coach Mike Nolan still says Battle will start when he's ready. "If Arnaz is healthy, he's the guy," Nolan said.

News: According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Arnaz Battle signed a five-year contract extension with the 49ers.

Analysis: Battle still does not warrant Fantasy consideration.
News: WR Arnaz Battle has a chance to return to action Sunday against the Giants. He has missed most of the past four games with a sprained right knee ligament.
Analysis: Battle is a risky start, healthy or not, because a first-time starter is all the 49ers have available at the QB position vs. a Giants defense that has been forcing plenty of turnovers thus far this season. We say avoid Battle in all leagues, if you can.

Analysis: Morton is not a recommended starter against the Washington Redskins.
News: WR Arnaz Battle is listed as doubtful and likely will not play Sunday at Washington because of a right knee sprain. The club is hoping he can return Oct. 30 against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Battle, who has to be reserved, is a low-end Fantasy wideout anyway because the 49ers are going with their rookie QB Alex Smith now, who figures the struggle the remainder of the season learning how to get the ball downfield. Expect the tight ends and backs to get involved in a low-risk short passing game. Veteran WR Johnnie Morton is likely to start in place of Battle, but he's low-end in Fantasy leagues at this point in his career.

News: Arnaz Battle (knee) was able to start in Week 5 against Indianapolis, but he was shut out in the game.

News: WR Arnaz Battle is questionable with a right knee strain, and it does not look as if he'll be ready to play Sunday against the Colts.
