Lions sit out several starters for preseason finale

(8/28/2014) The following starters will not suit up for the Lions Thursday night against the Bills: Quarterback Matthew Stafford, receivers Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate, running back Reggie Bush, center Dominic Raiola, guard Rob Sims and tight end Brandon Pettigrew, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, cornerback Rashean Mathis, defensive end Jason Jones, safeties James Ihedigbo and Don Carey and linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

(7/8/2014) Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis led the team with 16 passes defended last year, but he had no interceptions, notes the Detroit Free Press. With the departures of Chris Houston and Louis Delmas, who combined for five of the team's 15 picks, Detroit is counting on Mathis to be more of a ball hawk.

Mathis, 33, made a career-high eight interceptions in 2006 with the Jaguars. Since then, he has 10 interceptions in seven years, none since 2011.

They are as follows: DB Louis Delmas (knee); DL Andre Fluellen (concussion); DB Rashean Mathis (groin); LB Ashlee Palmer (ankle); and RB Theo Riddick (concussion). All are active against the Cowboys.

(10/25/2013) Nearly all the players listed on the Friday injury report for the Lions are probable. The most prominent are wide receiver Calvin Johnson, running back Reggie Bush and safety Louis Delmas with knee injuries and cornerback Rashean Mathis (groin).

Others are linebacker Ashlee Palmer (ankle), tight end Brandon Pettigrew (hamstring), defensive lineman Andre Fluellen (concussion) and running back Theo Riddick (concussion).

As expected, wide receiver Nate Burleson (forearm) and tackle Corey Hilliard (knee) have been ruled out. Offensive linemen Jason Fox (knee) and Riley Reiff (hamstring) are questionable.

(10/20/2013) Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis left Sunday's game vs. Cincinnati after suffering a setback with the groin injury that had him on the injury report coming into Week 7. Mathis was listed as probable coming into the game.

Mathis had one solo tackle before leaving the game.

Palmer participated in limited practice Friday after not practicing earlier in the week. Mathis was limited in practice all week. Delmas sat out Friday, but that was a normal day of rest for his knee. Delmas was able to participate on a limited basis Thursday.

Among players listed on the injury report on the defensive side of the ball, all seven players were able to take the field. Rashean Mathis says he's 100 percent

(10/2/2013) Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis said he is 100 percent despite missing the final three quarters Sunday against the Bears with a suspected head injury, according to MLive.com. Mathis wasn't cleared to return because doctors believed he lost consciousness, which Mathis denied.

Mathis was adminstered two concussion tests, both of which he passed, but the team decided to hold him out as a precaution. Mathis said he's felt no symptoms this week and practiced Wednesday.

"Weekend was the weekend," he said. "Now it's on to Green Bay, Green Bay, Green Bay."

Mathis left the game early, and was evaluated on the sideline. The team decided to hold him out until half time, when he would be evaluated again. During his second examination, it was determined that he would not return.

(8/17/2013) The Lions have signed veteran free agent cornerback Rashean Mathis to a one-year deal, reports ESPN. The 32-year-old Mathis was a full-time starter for the Jaguars from 2003 to 2010 and a Pro Bowler in 2006. His play regressed after he suffered a torn ACL in 2011. Mathis, who played in just 12 games a year ago with four starts, could compete for a starting job alongside Chris Houston.

Mathis will become an unrestricted free agent. “It was a difficult decision because he’s done so many things not only for the team but the community,” general manager Dave Caldwell said.
