Shanahan pleased with performances of Rex Grossman, Pat White

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/24/2013) Some teams struggle to put one viable quarterback on the field. The Redskins have four to feel confident about, including third-stringer Rex Grossman and fourth-stringer Pat White, who will be hard-pressed to make the team.

Grossman and White both performed well in the 30-7 win over Buffalo on Saturday. And Mike Shanahan gave them the praise he believed they earned.

"I thought they both played very well," he said in his post-game press conference. "Any time you rotate guys in there like we did and for them to play at the level they did, it's impressive."

With starter Robert Griffin III and backup Kirk Cousins out, the two combined to complete 18 of 35 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown. White also ran for a score.

Rex Grossman, Pat White prove quarterback depth for Redskins

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/24/2013) The Redskins have to be excited about their quarterback depth. Robert Griffin III is the reigning NFL Rookie of the Year, fellow second-year player Kirk Cousins would likely start for many NFL teams and Rex Grossman proved Saturday against Buffalo that he is arguably the best third-string quarterback in the game.

Grossman is certainly among the most accomplished - and he accomplished quite a bit against the Bills. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown in leading the Redskins to an easy 30-7 victory. He guided his team to scores in its first two possessions, including one that ended with his 7-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon.

Recent signing Pat White added reasons for optimism after taking over He engineered an 87-yard drive and finished it off with a 14-yard touchdown run, then led the Redskins to another march that resulted in a field goal.

Grossman and White alternated in the second half.
