News: Tennessee DL Shaun Smith recorded a sack of QB Andy Dalton in Sunday's Week 9 loss to the Bengals. Smith finished the game with four total tackles for the Titans. Two of his tackles went for a loss.
Analysis: Smith recorded his first sack of the season on Sunday against the Bengals. He's done little this year that would warrant his use in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Kansas City DT Shaun Smith recorded seven tackles in the Chiefs' 31-0 loss at San Diego in Week 14.
Analysis: Smith, who has now tallied seven tackles in three games this season, has 47 stops this season but just one sack. He remains a marginal Fantasy contributor and should remain on waiver wires.
News: Chiefs DL Shaun Smith did something in Week 12 against the Seahawks that he had never done in his career -- score a touchdown. After RB Jamaal Charles got the ball down to the 1-yardline in the second quarter, Smith lined up as the fullback on the following play and was able to punch it in. He also recorded his first sack of the year in the 42-24 win and finished with three tackles.
Analysis: Smith lined up as a blocking back last week on a pair of goal-line plays, but did not get a carry. On Sunday Smith got his chance and scored on a 1-yard run. That's huge for owners in formats that reward offensive touchdowns, as well as his first sack since 2007. Despite his productive game in Week 13, Smith is not some that should be starting in most IDP formats going forward.
News: The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent defensive tackle Shaun Smith, who played last season for Cincinnati. The 6-foot-2, 325-pound Smith has played in 63 games, including 27 starts, with New Orleans, Cincinnati and Cleveland. He has 196 tackles and two sacks during a career that began with the Saints in 2004.
Analysis: Smith doesn't post enough stats to warrant Fantasy use. Keep him off of rosters.
News: The Bengals re-signed DT Shaun Smith and released WR Maurice Purify.
Analysis: The Bengals are doing some roster juggling. Keep both players off of Fantasy lineups.
News: The Bengals have signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith two days after run-stopping lineman Domata Peko had surgery on his right knee that will sideline him for at least the next three games. Smith played for the Bengals from 2004-06, starting six games. He played for the Browns the last two years and had been out of the NFL since Detroit released him on Sept. 5.
Analysis: He isn't expected to produce enough stats on a regular basis to be useful in Fantasy. Keep him off rosters.
News: The Detroit Lions acted quickly to bolster their injury-depleted defensive line. Veteran defensive lineman Shaun Smith signed a $1 million, one-year deal Monday soon after the Lions lost Jared Devries for the season.
Analysis: Smith started 19 games in two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, who suddenly cut him Saturday. Browns coach Eric Mangini offered few details about his decision to cut Smith, who spoke freely and was involved in a weight-room fight with quarterback Brady Quinn. Smith takes up space more than he contribute Fantasy statistics for IDP owners. While he'll be a benefit to the Lions, he will not bring much Fantasy value with him.
News: The Cleveland Browns have released veteran defensive lineman Shaun Smith. Agent Neil Schwartz said Smith informed him that he has been let go by the team. The Browns have no immediate comment but coach Eric Mangini is expected to address Smith's status at a news briefing on Saturday. Smith was one of the Browns' most vocal players - on and off the field. He played two seasons with Cleveland after signing as a free agent in 2007. He made nine starts last season and finished with 47 tackles in 11 games. But Smith's biggest moment may have been an off-the-field confrontation with quarterback Brady Quinn. Smith reportedly punched Quinn in the face following an argument in the team's weight room.
Analysis: Smith takes up space more than he contribute Fantasy statistics for IDP owners. As he's no longer a member of the Browns, he'll have to sign elsewhere before he has any Fantasy value at all. He has little even with a club.
News: The Cleveland Browns have announced the inactives for their Week 16 game vs. Cincinnati. Not in uniform will be: RB Allen Patrick, TE Kellen Winslow, TE John Madsen, WR Paul Hubbard, DB Travis Daniels, SS Hamza Abdullah, DE Shaun Smith and LB Leon Williams.
Analysis: Winslow is the only player in this list with any Fantasy value, but he was declared out earlier in the week with an ankle injury. Everyone else can continue to be ignored.
News: The Browns lost two defensive starters to injuries, DE Shaun Smith (calf) and SS Sean Jones (ankle), Week 11 at Buffalo. Coach Romeo Crennel had no update on their status after the game.
Analysis: Smith has only one sack this season -- not enough to make him relevant in Fantasy. Leave him on waivers regardless of the injury.
News: Browns defenders S Mike Adams (hamstring), S Sean Jones (knee), LB Shantee Orr (foot), DT Shaun Smith (hand) and DE Corey Williams (shoulder) are all questionable for Week 9 vs. Baltimore.
Analysis: Of these players, only Jones registers on the Fantasy radar as a decent No. 3 Fantasy DB. The rest of these Clevelanders shouldn't be counted on for much Fantasy help whether they're healthy or not.
News: Browns QB Ken Dorsey (third QB), DB Mike Adams, DB Hamza Abdullah, lb Shantee Orr and DL Shaun Smith have all been ruled inactive for Week 8 at Jacksonville.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves for the Browns or see little action when active. It's safe to keep them reserved for Fantasy Week 8.
News: Browns DL Shaun Smith (hand) has been ruled out for Week 8 at Jacksonville. It will be the third straight game he misses.
Analysis: Smith is one of those players that is far more valuable to his real team than Fantasy owners. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Cleveland lists the following players as being inactive for Week 7 against Washington: QB Ken Dorsey (3rd QB), DB Mike Adams, LB Beau Bell, DL Shaun Smith and TE Martin Rucker.
Analysis: Keep all of these players reserved for Week 7. When healthy, they have minimal Fantasy value.
News: Browns coach Romeo Crennel said defensive end Shaun Smith will miss this week's game against the Redskins with a broken left hand. Smith had surgery during Cleveland's bye week, and during a follow-up exam last week, doctors recommended that he take some time off to make sure the bone is healed completely.
Analysis: Jones doesn't do enough statistically to have any real appeal in Fantasy IDP leagues. Leave him on waivers.
News: The Browns' list of inactives for Week 6 against the Giants includes QB Ken Dorsey, DB Sean Jones, DB Hamza Abdullah, TE Martin Rucker and DL Shaun Smith.
Analysis: Jones has some Fantasy value in IDP leagues when healthy, but he's still recovering from knee surgery. All of these other players should remain on waivers.
News: Cleveland rookie DB Eric Wright and three other Browns starters missed practice Wednesday with knee injuries. Wright sprained his right knee on his first play in Sunday's overtime win at Baltimore and could miss significant time. He was helped off the field and carted to the locker room for treatment. Wright underwent an MRI exam earlier this week, but Browns coach Romeo Crennel, taking a page from former boss Bill Belichick, was tight-lipped when asked about the player's condition or his chances of playing this week against Houston. Earlier this week, Browns play-by-play announcer Jim Donovan reported the team expected Wright to miss four to six weeks. If Wright can't play, Daven Holly likely will start in his place. Holly started 12 games last season and three this year. DL Shaun Smith and DL Ethan Kelly also missed practice with knee problems.
Analysis: Wright is a No. 2 DB in IDP leagues, so continue to monitor his status. Smith and Kelly have minimal Fantasy value. The Browns DST is not a recommended option for Week 12 against Houston.
News: The Browns inactives for Week 11 at Baltimore include DL Shaun Smith, DB Kenny Wright DB Ricardo Colclough, RB Jerome Harrison, WR Travis Wilson and QB Ken Dorsey (3rd QB).
Analysis: Keep all of these players reserved in all leagues for Week 11 and continue to monitor their status for Week 12 against Houston.
News: Cleveland nose tackle Shaun Smith will not play in Week 11's game against the Baltimore Ravens because of a knee injury. Smith will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Orpheus Roye. The Browns will activate rookie Louis Leonard, who was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Oct. 8. Leonard would be backup nose tackle so Ethan Kelley can get time at end.
Analysis: Smith was injured during practice Thursday, the team said. Smith has 29 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in nine games this season. When healthy, he is merely a low-end Fantasy DL. Keep him reserved Week 11.
News: Browns LB Leon Williams (seven tackles), DL Shaun Smith (five tackles, pass defended) and LB Andra Davis (five tackles) made nice contributions in Cleveland's 27-20 win over the Rams in Week 8.
Analysis: Davis has minimal Fantasy value as a backup LB in IDP leagues, while Williams and Smith do not put up enough stats on a consistent basis to have any value at this time.
News: LB Kamerion Wimbley, DL Shaun Smith, DB Brodney Pool and DB Sean Jones each had four tackles in Cleveland's 41-31 win over the Dolphins in Week 6.
Analysis: Jones is a solid starting DB in all IDP Fantasy leagues, even though four tackles is well below his weekly average of 6.4. Wimbley is worth a look as a reserve LB, while Pool and Smith have no Fantasy value at this time.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Shaun Smith is staking a claim to the Browns' starting job at left defensive end while Orpheus Roye mends from knee surgery. On one play in practice, Smith burst through a hole and stood up Jamal Lewis at the line of scrimmage.
Analysis: Smith was expected to be part of the team's rotation at defensive line, but a move to the starting lineup would be nice for him. As a D-lineman in a 3-4 scheme, expect stats to be kept to a minimum. Don't rely on him in standard IDP league play.
News: The latest player the Browns added this offseason is DL Shaun Smith, signed as a restricted free agent from Cincinnati. Smith, 6-foot-2, 325 pounds, played in 13 games last year in his third season with Cincinnati and had 14 tackles. "We wish Shaun well with his new opportunity," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said on Bengals.com. "For our offseason and future planning, we have chosen to allocate our cap resources in a different direction."
Analysis: The Browns have also added DT Robaire Smith, LB Antwan Peek and CB Kenny Wright. Despite these signings, the Browns defense remains at best a low-end No. 2 DST for Fantasy play.
News: The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns have signed Bengals DT Shaun Smith to an offer sheet. Smith is a restricted free agent. If the Bengals opt not to match, they will receive no compensation since Smith went undrafted as a rookie.
Analysis: Smith doesn't put up enough stats to warrant use in IDP league play.
News: The Bengals announced that CB Greg Brooks, LBs Landon Johnson and Caleb Miller and DT Shaun Smith have been tendered offers as part of being restricted free agents. The Bengals will receive a draft pick matching the round a player was drafted in if any of the players sign elsewhere and don't have their contracts matched by the Bengals.
Analysis: None of these defenders should be considered for use in standard Fantasy play.
News: The Bengals inactives for Week 17 against the Steelers are QB Doug Johnson, WR Skyler Green, RB Quincy Wilson, DB John Busing, LB A.J. Nicholson, LB Andre Frazier and DL Shaun Smith.
Analysis: Keep all these players reserved.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals have declared LB John Busing, LB Andre Frazier, WR Skyler Green, QB Doug Johnson, LB A.J. Nicholson and DL Shaun Smith inactive for Week 16 at Denver.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of Fantasy consideration in any league.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals have declared C Rich Braham, LB Ahmad Brooks, LB John Busing, WR Skyler Green, No. 3 QB Doug Johnson, LB A.J. Nicholson, DL Shaun Smith and C Ben Wilkerson inactive for Week 15 at Indianapolis.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of any Fantasy consideration.
News: Bengals WR Kelley Washington (hamstring) is questionable, while DL Shaun Smith (illness), DL John Thornton (knee), DB John Busing (knee) and DL Sam Adams (knee) are listed as probable for Week 14 vs. Oakland.
Analysis: None of these players are recommended Fantasy options for Week 14 vs. Oakland.
News: According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bengals signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith.
Analysis: The Saints had released Smith earlier in the week. He played in five games with 16 tackles for New Orleans this season. He has no Fantasy value.
