News: The Falcons added Troy linebacker Jonathan Massaquoi, Mississippi State safety Charles Mitchell and South Carolina defensive tackle Travian Robertson with late picks in the NFL Draft. Massaquoi is considered a raw prospect who has some speed in his game, Mitchell might eventually be a good gunner on special teams and Robertson is a big body who could develop into a role player for the team.
Analysis: The Falcons improved their secondary before the draft with the addition of cornerback Asante Samuel, and they might have one of the most complete secondaries in the game with Samuel, Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson on the staff. But their front seven is not complete; losing Curtis Lofton to the Saints hurts and questions about their aging pass rushers (John Abraham, Ray Edwards) will follow them through training camp. We consider the Falcons DST a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day, and they are worth using as a starter in deeper leagues. If they start out the season playing well then add them in all formats as a starting option.
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Eagles have traded cornerback Asante Samuel to the Falcons for a seventh-round pick Wednesday. Samuel then agreed to restructure his contract for three years, $18.5 million. Samuel will now be part of a solid cornerback trio with Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson.
Analysis: Samuel should take over as a starter for the Falcons opposite Grimes, with Robinson moving to the nickel spot. This gives the Falcons a great back end to their defense and should also help their pass as receivers will struggle to get open. We consider the Falcons DST a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day, and they are worth using as a starter in deeper leagues. If they start out the season playing well then add them in all formats as a starting option.
News: The Falcons placed the franchise tag on free agent cornerback Brent Grimes, all but assuring that he'll stay with the team in 2012. That news highlights an interesting week for Atlanta: The team is expected to let veteran defensive end John Abraham walk but keep defensive lineman Kroy Biermann. Linebacker Curtis Lofton, meanwhile, could also leave because he was not tagged.
Analysis: We like that Grimes will be back in Atlanta as he's a quality cornerback. We'd like to see the Falcons' front seven get addressed this offseason, and once it does, Mike Nolan's defense could have the makings of being a low-end option for the start of the Fantasy season.
News: Mike Nolan left as Miami's defensive coordinator after being hired to the same position with Atlanta, the Falcons announced Tuesday. Nolans spent the last two seasons as defensive coordinator with the Dolphins. He also served as defensive coordinator with Denver, Baltimore, Washington and with both New York teams; the Jets and Giants. Nolan also had an unsuccessful stint as San Francisco's head coach.
Analysis: Atlanta was in search of a new defensive coordinator after Brian VanGorder left the team to return to the college level at Auburn, where he will serve in the same capacity. The Falcons' defense often showed its age during the past season and permitted an average of 21.9 points per game. Atlanta struggled to effectively rush opposing quarterbacks, including within its own division against Cam Newton and Drew Brees, and surrendered 236.6 passing yards a week. Fantasy owners should not plan on selecting the Falcons DST in 2012 drafts.
News: Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder is leaving Atlanta to take the same job at Auburn. VanGorder's move continues his pattern of moving back and forth between college and NFL positions. He is the former coach at Georgia Southern and former defensive coordinator at Georgia. He left Georgia to become an assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 before coaching at Georgia Southern and moving back to the NFL with the Falcons. Smith said VanGorder "has been an integral part of our success here over the last four years." The Falcons' season ended with Sunday's 24-2 loss to the Giants in an NFC wild-card game.
Analysis: The Falcons defense is expected to upgrade at defensive end this offseason as two key players -- John Abraham and Kroy Biermann -- are set to be free agents. They need to put more heat on opposing quarterbacks to be effective, and a little help on kick and punt returns would go a long way, too. Don't expect the Falcons DST to be worth drafting this summer unless serious upgrades are made -- they play in a division with Drew Brees and Cam Newton, and they'll be tough to stop.
News: The Falcons DST started strong on Sunday in the NFL Wild Card playoff game at New York against the Giants. Unfortunately, they did absolutely nothing after the unit's start to the game. The Falcons DST forced Eli Manning into intentionally grounding the ball while going down in his own end zone for a safety early in the first quarter, taking a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, Atlanta lost the game and was eliminated from the playoffs after a 24-2 loss. The Falcons DST allowed 442 yards in the game and did not force a single turnover. Manning was only sacked once in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons DST's season is officially over after taking the Wild Card loss in New York. The unit was mostly solid on the season as they recorded eight games of double-digit Fantasy production during the regular season. That said, the Falcons DST does need to get more stingy heading into next year. The Falcons DST is not expected to be a top unit heading into Draft Day 2012.
News: Motivated by two blowout losses -- Green Bay in last year's playoffs and at New Orleans last week -- the Atlanta defense punished Tampa Bay during a 45-24 victory in Week 17 and secure the fifth seed in the NFC playoffs. The Falcons permitted just six points before halftime and picked off Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman three times. Overall, Atlanta recorded four takeaways. "We wanted to play our final regular-season game with a lot of intensity and energy, and I think we did that in all three phases," Falcons coach Mike Smith said.
Analysis: Turnovers were a problem for the Buccaneers all season. Freeman began the day tied for the league lead with 19 interceptions and one of his picks on Sunday went for a 26-yard touchdown by Atlanta LB Curtis Lofton. It was the second time in their last three games of the regular season the Falcons recorded four turnovers. Fantasy owners should view Atlanta as a low-end DST option in upcoming Fantasy playoff formats.
News: Atlanta hosts Tampa Bay in Week 17, a team that beat the Falcons back in Week 3. In that contest Bucs QB Josh Freeman threw two interceptions and was held to under 200 yards passing. Tampa Bay ranks among the worst offensive teams in the league as they average 320 total yards of offense per outing, along with 17.5 points.
Analysis: The Falcons gave up 463 yards to the Saints on Monday night, but the Bucs are far from New Orleans' level. Opposing DSTs are averaging 12.40 Fantasy points per contest against Tampa Bay. Fantasy owners should view the Falcons DST as a No. 1 option solely based on their matchup.
News: The Falcons DST could do little to stop Drew Brees on Monday night in the Week 16 loss at New Orleans. The Falcons DST gave up 463 yards to the Saints on the big stage as Brees broke Dan Marino's all-time single-season yardage record. The Falcons DST didn't get into the end zone and the team took the loss 45-16. The Falcons DST did manage two interceptions of Brees in the game, something no team has done easily. The Falcons had one sack in the loss.
Analysis: The Falcons DST was coming off a huge game against Jacksonville in which they scored and had five sacks with three takeaways. They certainly didn't play up to that level against the Saints, but should have an easier time of it Week 17 in the regular-season finale against Tampa Bay. After losing Monday night, the Falcons need to win next week, so expect a big effort. The Falcons DST might just be worth starting in a pinch in Week 17.
News: The Falcons will have their hands full when they take on the Saints and their high-powered offense in Week 16. New Orleans sports the No. 1passing attack in the NFL, putting up over 331 yards per game, and rank eighth in rushing. Atlanta ranks fourth in the league in run defense, giving up under 97 yards per contest, but are 17th against the pass. The Falcons have recorded 30 sacks thus far with 14 interceptions and two DST scores.
Analysis: The Falcons gave up 363 yards of total offense when they faced New Orleans earlier in the year by holding the division foe to just 41 yards on the ground. But Atlanta got carved up for 332 yards and two scores through the air, which proved to be the difference in the game. Monday's contest will likely be high-scoring so owners would be wise to leave the Falcons DST on the bench in the majority of Fantasy leagues.
News: Atlanta held Jacksonville to 207 total yards of offense in Week 15 -- 113 credited to RB Maurice Jones-Drew. The Falcons sacked rookie QB Blaine Gabbert five times, causing two fumbles, en route to a 41-14 victory. Atlanta allowed just one offensive score and that came late in the fourth quarter as Gabbert found Chastin West for a 16-yard strike. The Falcons also picked Gabbert off once and also recovered a fumble off a muffed punt.
Analysis: The Falcons get plenty of rest before facing the Saints in Week 16. I think the rest will help us. I think our team is focused enough to understand that every game counts, so how we utilize our time when no one is looking will play a big part in us being successful," DL John Abraham said. In the first meeting between the Falcons and Saints, New Orleans pulled off the 26-23 win. Fantasy owners should consider them more of a No. 2 DST option moving forward.
News: The Falcons DST enters Week 15 on Thursday at home against Jacksonville coming off back-to-back less-than-stellar efforts for the unit at Houston and at Carolina. The Falcons DST has not recorded double digits in Fantasy points in four of the team's last five games and they didn't force a single turnover in the other game against Minnesota, despite four sacks and limiting the Vikings to 14 points and 226 yards. Of course, DST units playing Jacksonville generally have performed admirably this season. The Texans DST came up with seven sacks of QB Blaine Gabbert Week 12.
Analysis: The Falcons DST could be in for a better performance Week 15 on Thursday, though they might be meeting the Jaguars at the wrong time. Jacksonville put up 41 points on Tampa Bay last week in the team's highest scoring game of the season. Of course, the Falcons DST is not the Buccaneers DST and figures to do much better as the team is on quite a roll. The Falcons DST has nine sacks in the team's last three games and hasn't given up more than 21 points in any of those contests. That said, they are probably still just a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 15.

News: The Falcons defense got off to a slow start in Week 14, allowing 23 points to QB Cam Newton and the hosting Panthers in the first half. But it wouldn't allow a point the rest of the way, recording two interceptions off Newton in the second half. The Falcons also had two sacks in the contest. In all, they limited the Panthers to 23 points on 416 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons were able to recover after a rocky start, but the 416 yards were still the most they've allowed to any team since Week 5 against the Packers. They entered the game allowing an average of 278.8 yards over their previous six. They're typically not a great source of sacks or turnovers, but if yardage is one of the most important considerations for a defensive unit in your Fantasy league, the Falcons DST certainly has its place. It's a sleeper in all formats for its favorable matchup against the Jaguars in Week 15.
News: The Falcons' reputation as a run-stopper took a hit when they allowed 142 rushing yards to the combination of Arian Foster and Ben Tate at Houston last week, but they still rank third against the run, allowing 90.0 yards per game. They'll need to step up their game on the road in Week 14, though, against a Panthers running game that has emerged as one of the league's best, ranking fifth with 137.6 yards per game, including a combined 364 over their last two. "Their run game has been very impressive here in the last few weeks," defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said, according to The Sports Xchange. "They have dedicated themselves to the run game, then using the receivers and getting big plays from the receivers."
Analysis: In general, the Panthers have been a solid offensive team this season. That's partly due to rookie Cam Newton, who has 518 rushing yards and a 5.2 average per attempt while setting the single-season record for touchdowns on the ground by a quarterback with 13. To combat his rushing ability, the Falcons plan to treat him as a running back in rushing situations. So what does that mean for the Falcons DST in Fantasy? Well, much of the unit's success comes from its ability to stop the run, so if the Panthers are able to overcome it, the Falcons defense won't have much to fall back on. The Panthers have given up the 16th-most Fantasy points to opposing defenses this season, so the Falcons DST isn't necessarily a lost cause in Fantasy, but this week doesn't seem like the best time to use it.
News: The Falcons, who entered the game ranked second against the run and hadn't allowed more than 70 rushing yards to any running back since Week 3, gave up 111 rushing yards to Texans RB Arian Foster on the road in Week 13. They also weren't able to take advantage of rookie QB T.J. Yates in his first career start, recording only three sacks and forcing just one turnover -- a fumble that could have easily been ruled an incomplete pass in the first quarter. The Texans scored 17 points on 337 yards in the victory.
Analysis: The Falcons entered the game having allowed an average of 267.2 yards over their last five, so you probably expected them to perform better against a rookie quarterback than they did. Still, they didn't have a bad defensive performance, and if you started the Falcons DST in Fantasy, you probably still got your money's worth. The unit is one on the rise, but with a tricky matchup on the road in Week 14 against the Panthers and QB Cam Newton, you might want to treat it as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Falcons run defense has gotten stronger and stronger over the course of the season. It now ranks second in all of football, allowing just 83.5 yards per game, and hasn't surrendered more than 70 yards to any running back since Week 3. But it's in for its toughest test yet Week 13 at Houston. In Arian Foster and Ben Tate, the Texans have two running backs with four 100-yard games this season. Overall, the team ranks third in rushing offense and figures to feature the run even more with rookie T.J. Yates now under center. Itll be a great challenge for our defense," coach Mike Smith said. "Coach [Gary] Kubiak, who spent a lot of time with Coach Shanahan and that zone running scheme, they do an outstanding job up front. I think the two backs, its well-documented what theyre capable of doing."
Analysis: The dual rushing attack has made the Texans a headache for their opponents. They've allow the fifth-fewest Fantasy points to DSTs this season. Of course, most of that damage came with former Pro-Bowler Matt Schaub under center, not a fifth-round rookie who began the season as the team's third-string quarterback. Even if the Falcons DST struggles to stop the run, it should fare well enough against the pass -- perhaps even building off its four sacks against another rookie quarterback, Christian Ponder, last week -- to have a respectable Fantasy performance. Its production has improved enough over the course of the season that it's worth using as a low-end No. 1 DST this week.
News: The Falcons defense, which had a combined seven sacks in its previous five games, got back on track with four Week 12 against the Vikings. With star RB Adrian Peterson sidelined by a high ankle sprain, the Falcons didn't have much reason to fear the running game and were able to apply constant pressure to rookie QB Christian Ponder. They gave up 14 points to the Vikings on only 226 yards, marking the fourth time they've allowed less than 300 in their last five games. They did not force a turnover, however.
Analysis: The Falcons defense has actually performed pretty well lately, rising the in the rankings against the run in particular, but it generally doesn't record many sacks or turnovers, limiting its Fantasy value. You'd only want to start the Falcons DST when it has favorable matchups, which should be the case in Week 13 at Houston if, as expected, the Texans are forced to go with third-string QB T.J. Yates.
News: The Falcons, who haven't allowed more than 70 yards to a running back since Week 3, might not even have to contend with star RB Adrian Peterson when they host the Vikings in Week 12, in which case their second-ranked run defense, which allows 85.4 yards per game, can more or less go on autopilot. If their primary emphasis is stopping the passing game, they could have a field day against rookie QB Christian Ponder, who was sacked five times against the Raiders last week.
Analysis: The Vikings haven't typically been an easy matchup for opposing DSTs this season, but they haven't typically been without Peterson either. The Falcons DST normally isn't a unit that racks up a bunch of sacks and interceptions, but over its last four games, it has allowed an average of 277.5 yards. If the Falcons can force Ponder into some mistakes in his first game without his safety valve in the backfield, they could have one of their best defensive performances of the season. Because so many options are available to Fantasy owners in Week 12, though, the Falcons DST remains just a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: The Falcons defense did a solid job of slowing down RB Chris Johnson and the Titans' running game in Week 11. Entering Sunday ranked fourth in the league in run defense, they surrendered just 41 yards rushing and 298 yards of total offense in the 23-17 win. While Atlanta gave up 257 yards through the air, they recorded one sack and picked off QB Matt Hasselbeck in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Falcons has been solid against the run each of the past two weeks and continue to grow in the secondary. While they have admittedly struggled against teams that throw the ball well, they will be going up against the Vikings next week, who have a rookie QB in Christian Ponder. Consider the Falcons DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 12.
News: The Falcons defense will be looking to limit RB Chris Johnson and the Titans in Week 11. Johnson rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown a week ago to help lead his team to 172 yards on the ground. Tennessee ranks 14th in the league in passing and 32nd in rushing. Atlanta ranks fourth in the league against the run, holding opponents to under 91 yards per game, and 23rd in pass defense. The Falcons have recorded 15 sacks thus far with 10 interceptions and a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Falcons has not allowed more than 30 points in a game since Week 2 as their defensive line has been able to put some pressure on opposing quarterbacks. While they have been susceptible through the air, their ability to stop the run should serve them well on Sunday. Consider the Falcons DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 11.
News: The Falcons defense wasn't at its best in Week 10, but the performance was admirable considering the competition was the high-scoring Saints. The Falcons limited the visiting Saints to 26 points on 363 yards. They did not record a sack or force a turnover, however.
Analysis: The Falcons DST had been on a good run recently, recording 10 sacks and four interceptions over its last four games, but it couldn't get a hand on QB Drew Brees in Week 10. Still, it did well limiting the Saints to field goals on four of their six scoring drives. The performance wasn't anything that should discourage you from using the Falcons DST in the right matchups. The unit is worth a look as at least a borderline option when the Falcons host the Titans in Week 11.
News: The Falcons have won three straight games, and their defense is a big part of it. After allowing averages of 26.0 points and 383.4 yards through five games, the Falcons have held the opposition to 13.3 points and 272.3 yards per game in the last three. "We're starting to jell," coach Mike Smith said. "I like the way our guys are running. We're a team that has a defense that has some speed." The defense is going to face a huge test in Week 10, as the visiting Saints lead in the NFL in total offense (445.1 yards per game) and are second in scoring (31.9 points per game). They allow 6.6 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, eighth-fewest in the NFL.
Analysis: With the return to health of defensive linemen John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux in recent weeks, the Falcons' pass rush has greatly improved, and the defense as a whole has benefited. Still, now might not be the best time to take a flier on the Falcons DST. It has some favorable matchups ahead, so you wouldn't want to forget about it in Fantasy. But the Saints' scoring potential is too high for you to expect a good statistical performance from the Falcons defense in Week 10.
News: Despite being on the road, the Falcons took advantage of the Colts' 30th-ranked offense in Week 9, allowing just seven points on 186 yards. In fact, the Colts' lone score came on a 6-yard interception return by DB Jerraud Powers in the second quarter. The Falcons finished with two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Colts weren't able to do anything against the Falcons defense in Week 9, but then again, that's been the case for just about any defense they've faced recently. Still, the Falcons DST deserves some credit for the performance. It has now allowed less than 20 points in three straight games, recording four interceptions and six sacks during the stretch. With defensive linemen John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux now healthy, the Falcons DST is generating enough of a pass rush to be a viable unit in Fantasy. It doesn't have a particularly good matchup Week 10 against the Saints, though, so you should probably leave it on waivers for now.
News: Not only do the Falcons have a favorable matchup on the road in Week 9 against a Colts team that ranks 30th in total offense and 30th in scoring offense, but they've been on a roll defensively, putting together two of their best performance leading up to their Week 8 bye. After allowing an average of 26.0 points and 383.4 yards in its first five games, Atlanta gave up an average of 315.5 yards in a 31-17 victory over Carolina in Week 6 and a 23-16 win over Detroit on Oct. 23. The pass rush has been a big reason for the improvement. The Falcons have eight sacks over their last three games after having none in their previous three.
Analysis: The Colts offense doesn't typically give up a lot of sacks, but it does typically give up a lot of Fantasy points. Opposing DSTs average 15.0 Fantasy points per game against the Colts, fourth-most in the NFL. The Falcons DST is a unit on the rise now that its defensive line is healthy, and this matchup is obviously as good as it gets. The Falcons DST is worth using as a No. 1 Fantasy option this week, so give it a look off the waiver wire if you need help at the position.
News: The Falcons were able to hold the high-scoring Lions to a season-low 16 points on 263 yards Week 7 at Detroit thanks in part to an aggressive pass rush that limited Lions QB Matthew Stafford's accuracy. The Falcons recorded three sacks on the day, giving them eight in their last three games. They also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Falcons DST has been a mostly uninspiring Fantasy option this season, but now that defensive linemen John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux are healthy, the unit is starting to show some potential. You still wouldn't want to treat it as more than a matchups type, but it'll be worth a look with a favorable matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9 following a bye in Week 8.
News: Falcons DL Ray Edwards, still recovering from offseason knee surgery and getting used to a new defensive scheme, has begun to look more like himself with a sack in each of his last two games. The Falcons' pass rush will be especially important Week 7 against the Lions. Edwards says the Falcons can only slow down the Lions' eighth-ranked passing game by applying pressure to QB Matthew Stafford, as the 49ers did by sacking him five times in Week 6. "It's always important," Edwards said. "The quarterback is definitely the brains of the offense so it's definitely important to get pressure on him. If we can scramble him the body will fall. That's always the main emphasis on any team you play."
Analysis: The Falcons defense ranks 27th against the pass, allowing 283.3 yards per game, which means it's at risk of getting shredded by Stafford if the pass rush doesn't step up. Granted, the Falcons did just limit Panthers QB Cam Newton to 237 passing yards in Week 6, but Stafford's offense has been even more of a challenge for opposing defenses this season, giving up only 4.5 Fantasy points per game, second-best in the league. The good news is Lions RB Jahvid Best figures to miss the game with a concussion, so the Falcons will be able to key in on the passing game even more than they otherwise might. Still, the Lions' offense is simply too explosive for you to trust the Falcons DST as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option this week.
News: Facing a unique challenge in rookie QB Cam Newton, the Falcons stepped up against the Panthers in Week 6, putting together arguably their best defensive performance all season. They limited the Panthers to 17 points on 368 yards and recorded a season-high three interceptions. They also had two sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons limited the Buccaneers to 16 points on 295 yards in Week 3, but otherwise, Week 6 is the most they've kept an offense in check. Better yet, they're the first team to make Newton actually look like a rookie, preventing him from throwing a touchdown pass for the first time in his career. The Falcons DST isn't a highly-regarded Fantasy unit, but the Falcons are up to nine interceptions on the season and have the potential to step up their sack production now that John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux are healthy. Still, with a tough matchup Week 7 at Detroit, the Falcons DST is no more than a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: The Falcons have had to face their share of dynamic offenses already this season, including Philadelphia and Green Bay, but they'll have a unique challenge when the Panthers come to town in Week 6. In rookie Cam Newton, they'll be facing a quarterback who's an even bigger threat with his legs than with his arm in the red zone. "When you have an extra runner with the quarterback you have an extra blocker," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "Normally you don't discount it 100 percent, but the majority of the time the quarterback doesn't carry the ball, and that really is the issue it creates for coordinators. If they're in the red zone, they're creating plays where they can have a hat on a hat and not have an unblocked defender."
Analysis: Newton's unique talents have allowed the Panthers to hang with every offense they've faced this season. Considering the Falcons rank 28th against the pass this season, their defense could be in for a long day against a quarterback who has thrown for more than 350 yards three times this season. The Falcons DST isn't known for its big-play ability and doesn't record a high number of sacks and interceptions every week, so this week doesn't seem like an ideal time to use it as more than a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: The Falcons defense did a poor job slowing down the Packers passing game in Week 5. Atlanta allowed Green Bay to throw for 396 yards with two touchdowns in the 25-14 loss. The Falcons were able to force one fumble and sacked QB Aaron Rodgers four times in the contest.
Analysis: The Falcons did a nice job against the run on Sunday night but their struggles in the passing game continue. With Cam Newton and the Panthers up next on the schedule, they could be in for another rough outing so continue to view the Falcons as a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 6.
News: The Falcons will be going up against a potent offense in Week 5 against the Packers. Green Bay sports the fifth-best passing attack in the league and rank 15th in rushing. Atlanta ranks 24th and 10th against the pass and run, respectively. The Falcons have recorded five sacks on the year with six interceptions and a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Falcons had a hard time containing Seahawks QB Tavaris Jackson a week ago so Fantasy owners can only imagine what Aaron Rodgers can do against their defense. The Packers have moved the ball at will so far this season and have showed no signs of slowing down. Considering their track record, consider the Falcons DST as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 5.
News: After collecting two interceptions on Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman, Atlanta was eagerly awaiting its Week 4 matchup with Seattle's mistake-prone signal-caller Tarvaris Jackson. The Falcons had mixed results against Jackson as they picked him off twice, but also permitted three passing touchdowns before escaping with a 30-28 victory on Sunday. It was the fourth straight game Atlanta has recorded an interception and the defense has now garnered six picks in its four games this season.
Analysis: Jackson did not most of his damage in the second half (two touchdown passes) as the Falcons seemed to relent in its pass rush and the Seahawks racked up 372 total yards. Still, Atlanta dominated the time of possession and controlled the ball for more than 20 minutes compared to Seattle (40:10 to 19:50). The Falcons also did not record a sack of Jackson -- the third straight week they have failed to bring down the opposing quarterback. Consider Atlanta a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 5 against Green Bay.
News: After an offsides call late in the fourth quarter squashed any chances of a rally during its loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday, the Atlanta defense is looking for a quick recovery in Week 4 at Seattle. "It's tough man," Falcons CB Dunta Robinson said earlier this week about the team's defensive line. "Those guys are so anxious. It's fourth and one, we're out of timeouts. But we need to have more discipline than that."
Analysis: Robinson and the secondary certainly did their part in the 16-13 loss as they intercepted Bucs QB Josh Freeman twice, including one pass in the end zone. The 16 points were the fewest the Falcons have surrendered this season as they had been on the hook for at least 30 points in their first two games. Atlanta must also improve its pass rush as it ranks 23rd in the NFL with only five sacks. Fantasy owners should view the Falcons as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST as the Seahawks are averaging a meager 10.0 points per game this year.
News: After rallying to victory in a shootout against Philadelphia last Sunday night, Atlanta was focused on limited Tampa Bay's chances in Week 3. The Falcons accomplished that for most of the game, but still came up short in a 16-13 loss to the Bucs on Sunday. Atlanta did manage to pick off Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman twice, including one in the middle of the end zone, to run his total up to four interceptions this season. He threw six interceptions all last season.
Analysis: Any hope Atlanta had of rallying evaporated as Tampa Bay converted a final first down when DL Corey Peters jumped offside on fourth-and-inches when the Bucs did not plan to snap the ball. "It was a freeze play. They were going to use a hard count," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "We talked about it on the sideline. We didn't execute as an entire defense." The play could be a result of a tired unit as the Bucs owned an 11-minute advantage in time of possession. Fantasy owners should view Atlanta as a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 4 at Seattle.
News: With both teams coming off come-from-behind victories, Atlanta seeks its fifth straight win over Tampa Bay during Week 3 on Sunday. And several members of the Falcons defense have shined against the Buccaneers, which will certainly help as it looks to take an early lead in the NFC South. DL John Abraham has eight sacks in 11 meetings against Tampa and his 104.5 career sacks is second most among active players. CB Brent Grimes has an interception in three consecutive games against Tampa, while the defense overall has five picks in past three outings.
Analysis: Atlanta could earn another boost if Bucs RB LeGarrette Blount is unable to play. Blount did not practice Wednesday, nor did coach Raheem Morris divulge the injury other than to say he's "hopeful" Blount will be ready to go by Sunday. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on Blount's status as an injury would certainly improve the Falcons' run defense. For now, consider Atlanta a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 3.
News: The Falcons defense had a hard time slowing down the Eagles in Week 2. Atlanta allowed 447 yards of total offense in the 35-31 win. They allowed 133 yards on the ground and 314 yards through the air but was able to pick off QB Michael Vick once and forced him into two fumbles before knocking him out of the game in the third quarter.
Analysis: The Falcons were able to come up with some opportunistic turnovers on Sunday and caught a stroke of luck after Vick was knocked out due to a concussion. Atlanta was unable to record a sack, however, and had a hard time keeping up with Philadelphia's speedy skill players. They should face an easier test with the Buccaneers in Week 3 but the Falcons DST should be considered as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option at this point.
News: After getting carved up for 289 yards through the air in their season opener, the Falcons could be for even more trouble in Week 2 against the Eagles. Philadelphia rushed for 236 yards in Week 1 and threw for 167 yards with two touchdowns. When these two teams faced each other a year ago, the Falcons gave up 474 yards of total offense in the 31-17 loss.
Analysis: The Falcons were able to hold the Bears to just 88 yards on the ground in Week 1 but got exposed through the air, especially on screen passes. The Eagles love to dump the ball of to their speedy skill position players and can create havoc when Michael Vick scrambles. While Atlanta has a decent pass rush, Philadelphia has the speed to get down the field in a hurry and will likely move the ball at will on Sunday. Considering the matchup, the Falcons DST should be considered a No. 2 option for Week 2.
News: In the Falcons Week 1 game at Chicago, the defense gave up 23 of the Bears' 30 points but racked up four sacks while Kroy Biermann returned a Jay Cutler interception 50 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. They allowed a total of 312 yards passing and 88 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Falcons will be in for a tough matchup again in Week 2 when the Eagles come to town, led by ex-Falcons QB Michael Vick. Consider other options before going with this DST in Week 2.
News: The Falcons' first matchup this season is in Chicago, where they'll take on Jay Cutler, Matt Forte and the Bears. Chicago's offense is potent but it also makes plenty of mistakes. In 2010 they allowed an average of 3.5 sacks per game and 3.3 turnovers per game, so that should favor the Falcons. Atlanta's addition of defensive end Ray Edwards (one sack vs. Chicago last year with the Vikings) should pay dividends.
Analysis: We'd be surprised to see the Bears offense put up a ton of points in this game, so the Falcons DST is a palatable starting option for Week 1. Other DSTs will be better but at least the Falcons should get some takeaways.
News: Vikings DE Ray Edwards has agreed to a five-year deal with the Falcons, according to multiple sources. The deal is worth $30 million with $11 million in guarantees. Edwards had eight sacks and 37 total tackles last season in Minnesota.
Analysis: Edwards should be a key pass rusher for the Falcons, and he's a definite upgrade over the other rushers they had there behind John Abraham and even Kroy Biermann. The Falcons DST will heat up a bit given this addition to their pass rush. If they can add another defender or two, this DST will be nice to draft late. Just remember, the Falcons play a lot of high-powered offenses this season, so your best move might be to pick the Falcons DST off waivers during the year when they have a great matchup.
News: The Falcons stayed close to home by selecting Georgia linebacker Akeem Dent in the third round of the NFL draft and selecting DE Cliff Matthews of South Carolina in Round 7. Dent (6-1, 233) led Georgia with 126 tackles and had 2 1/2 sacks as a senior. Matthews (6-3, 268) had 38 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season. Both Dent and Matthews should give the Falcons some good depth.
Analysis: Neither pick will improve the status of the Falcons DST, but they're a pretty promising unit to begin with. But the biggest issue with this unit is the schedule. Not only will it have two games each against the Saints and Buccaneers, but it will also duel with the AFC South, NFC North, the Eagles and the Giants in 2011. It's hard to believe the Falcons will hold down opponents to low scores, making the unit one to pass on come Draft Day. Look for them on waivers when they have games against the Panthers.
News: The Falcons defense did not hold up their end of the bargain in Saturday's Divisional Playoff game against the Packers. QB Aaron Rodgers gashed the secondary for 366 yards and three touchdowns, the signal-caller even ran for a score in the route. The Falcons were able to pressure him, but he escaped time after time, making them pay with long throws after buying the WRs extra time to create separation. "That's the difference between him and other quarterbacks," Falcons linebacker Mike Peterson said. "He can run and throw off that run. He's good, man. He's good." Four different targets racked up at least 75 yards receiving against Atlanta in the 48-21 blowout. Green Bay racked up 442 yards on the day, and didn't have to punt once. The only consolation for the Falcons was on special teams, when KR Eric Weems returned a second quarter kick 102 yards for a touchdown, which set an NFL record for longest return ever.
Analysis: The Packers offense threw the ball all over the field against the secondary, who was playing without nickel corner Brian Williams (knee). Atlanta did do a good job against the Green Bay ground game, that managed 96 yards rushing. Still, the Packers are not a running team by any means. Atlanta's offense did not help the cause, turning the ball over four times -- one of which was an interception returned for a score. However, the Falcons DST played much better in the regular season, and they were a solid unit throughout the year. Heading into 2011, they remain a viable Fantasy option, so select them as such on Draft Day.
News: The Falcons defense did its job to help Atlanta secure the top spot in the NFC playoffs with a dominating 31-10 win against the Panthers in Week 17. The Panthers managed only four first downs and 97 total yards in the first half as the Falcons led 21-0. "We had to make a statement," said Falcons defensive end John Abraham. "We don't consider it the last game of the season but the first game of the playoffs. I'm just excited we're here." Part of the scoring in the first half for Atlanta came on Eric Weems' 55-yard punt return for a touchdown. "Once I was clean for the first 10 yards, I knew it would be a touchdown," Weems said. The Panthers mustered just 291 yards and didn't score a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. Atlanta managed three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: Abraham called out the Atlanta defense earlier in the week and the team definitely responded on Sunday. Now they get to build some momentum in the playoffs. Atlanta held their opponents to less than 20 points in six of its last seven games. If they keep the core group together heading into 2011, then we can't see why the Falcons DST can't be a viable Fantasy option on Draft Day.
News: The Falcons just played their Week 17 opponent, the Panthers, on Dec. 12 and defeated them 31-10. But after seeing Minnesota upset Philadelphia and knowing that Green Bay lost to Detroit a few weeks back, the Falcons are not taking the 2-13 Panthers for granted, reports The Sports Xchange. "We did see them three weeks ago, so there's going to be some familiarity," coach Mike Smith said. "There's going to be certain plays that we know defensively we're going to have to stop and work on because we did give up some big plays in that ballgame. Again, we went over there and it was a hard-fought game, but it was a hard-fought game probably a lot closer than the score. Our focus is going to be on getting the job done this weekend against Carolina."
Analysis: The Falcons might have given up just 10 points to the Panthers in Week 14, but Carolina racked up 288 yards, including 212 on the ground. However, we expect Atlanta to be focused in Week 17, especially with the top seed in the NFC playoffs on the line. Add to the fact they struggled in a Week 16 loss to the Saints and the Panthers look like sacrificial lambs. If you own the Falcons DST and are in a Fantasy championship Week 17, then you should consider using them.
News: The Falcons offense gave up some yardage to the Saints in Week 16, but they also came up with a huge play on defense. With Atlanta trailing 10-7 in the fourth quarter, QB Drew Brees made an ill-advised attempt to flip a backhanded pass to escape heavy pressure. The throw was picked off by DL Chauncey Davis and returned 26 yards for a touchdown in the opening minute of the fourth -- giving the Falcons their first lead all night. The Falcons added another pick in the fourth quarter. While Atlanta limited New Orleans to just 72 yards on the ground, they gave up 302 yards through the air in the 17-14 loss. It was their first loss at home this season.
Analysis: The Falcons did not give up a ton of points on Monday night but they could not make the big stops when it mattered most. Brees found the end zone through the air, and RB Pierre Thomas added a touchdown run of his own. With the loss to New Orleans, Atlanta will have to win on the road next week against Carolina to win the NFC South title. They held the Panthers to just 10 points and 288 yards of total offense earlier in the year so look for the Falcons to bounce back in a crucial game. Considering the matchup, view the Falcons DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: Atlanta is the NFC's only undefeated team at home and that is where the Falcons will face the Saints in Week 16. The last team to beat them at home was the Saints, back in 2009. Atlanta already beat New Orleans once this year, but the defense allowed Drew Brees to throw for 365 yards (149 of that Lance Moore) and three touchdowns. The Falcons would intercept Brees twice and sack him twice. Coach Mike Smith said he is expecting a tougher challenge when defending New Orleans' run game with RBs Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush both healthy. In the first game in Week 3, New Orleans was held to just 43 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Analysis: Atlanta would love to clinch home-field throughout the playoffs against their division foe, but it won't be easy. The Falcons have been allowing 226.8 passing and 106.1 rushing yards per contest this year. In contrast, the Saints offense is among the best in the NFL, totaling 377.6 yards per game. Atlanta did get to Brees twice in the first meeting, but Brees has been sacked just 22 times this year. If the Falcons can get to Brees and put him on his back a few times, their chances should be better. This week will be a big test for the Falcons and their defense. For that reason, Fantasy owners should view them as a No. 2 DST option at best.
News: Entering its Week 15 matchup against Seattle, one of Atlanta's goals was to force error-prone Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck into making mistakes. The Falcons benefited greatly in Sunday's 34-18 victory. Atlanta harassed the Seahawks offense, particularly Hasselbeck, into turning the ball over on three consecutive possessions -- including a Hasselbeck fumble in the end zone -- that led to 17 points for the Falcons. Atlanta quickly turned a seven-point lead into a 34-10 advantage entering the final quarter. We gave them the football game in the third quarter, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. On the fumble, Falcons DE Jamaal Anderson took Hasselbeck down, forcing him to lose the ball deep in the Seahawks' own end zone and Jonathan Babineaux scooped it up for the second touchdown by an Atlanta defensive lineman this season.
Analysis: The swarming Falcons defense took full advantage of Hasselbeck's recent struggles and added to his mounting interception total. in Sunday's game he completed the same number of passes as the interceptions total in his last four games (10). Atlanta was tough the entire game and allowed Seattle just 15 plays on its side of field while forcing three three-and-outs. The Falcons also held the Seahawks to just 91 rushing yards paced by Marshawn Lynch's 60 yards to extend Seattle's woeful streak of games with a 100-yard rusher to 18. Atlanta also took down Seahawks quarterbacks twice during the game and now has 27 sacks this season. Consider the Falcons DST a viable Fantasy option in Week 16 against New Orleans.
News: With the NFL's fifth-ranked scoring offense posting an average of 25.8 points per game, the Atlanta defense has been often overlooked this season. The Falcons, who can clinch a playoff spot with a victory at Seattle in Week 15, has allowed more than 20 points only once in their last four games. Atlanta has been tough against the run this season having allowed 107.2 rushing yards per game, ranked 13th in the league. Additionally, the Falcons are 18-2 in the last three seasons when holding opponents to less than 100 yards rushing.
Analysis: Atlanta could add to its impressive record in Sunday's game against a sluggish Seahawks offense that has mustered 100 rushing yards just one in its last four games. Seattle, ranked 31st in the league with 84.8 rushing yards per game, has scored less than 10 points in three games this season -- all loses. The Falcons enter Sunday's game after compiling a season-high five sacks against Carolina in Week 14 and could add to its season total of 25 against a beleaguered Seahawks offensive line. Consider Atlanta a No. 1 Fantasy DST in Week 15.
News: As expected, the Falcons defense thrived against the miserable Panthers at Carolina in Week 14, recording a season-high five sacks -- two each by John Abraham and Kroy Biermann. Its previous high was only three. The Falcons also recorded an interception and recovered a fumble. They limited the Panthers to 10 points on 288 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons were even more dominant than that in the first half, limiting the Panthers to 33 yards. Abraham said the Falcons "might have gotten a little complacent" with a 17-0 lead. "We were playing well and we felt we could have had a bigger lead than we did," Abraham said. Still, the Falcons DST stepped up as it needed to against a weak offensive team, justifying its place as a platoon start in Fantasy. It has another good matchup Week 15 at Seattle, so you might want to continue to roll with it.
News: The Falcons defense may have had some trouble keeping the Buccaneers at bay last week, but it couldn't ask for a better matchup in Week 14 than at Carolina. The Panthers are last in the league with 154 points scored and have been held to an NFL-low 9.8 per game at home. They rank dead last in passing, averaging 157.3 yards per game, and 21st in rushing, averaging 103.8 yards per game. They've also allowed 18.5 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, by far the most in the league.
Analysis: Coming off a stretch of seven games in which it has averaged just 7.0 Fantasy points, the Falcons DST should prove plenty relevant this week. It still ranks among the league leaders in interceptions with 16 and has always been good against the run, allowing 98.5 yards per game. That should more or less eliminate the Panthers' one means of moving the ball. Rookie QB Jimmy Clausen does a pretty good job of stopping himself in the passing game. The Falcons DST should be able to limit the Panthers' scoring and force some turnovers, making it practically a must-start Fantasy option this week.
News: Atlanta allowed Tampa Bay to run for a total of 151 yards in Week 13 -- giving up their first 100-yard rushing game and rushing touchdown since Week 2. "I dont know if the [relatively slippery field] had something to do with the traction or what," DL John Abraham said of allowing Tampa Bay to run for 151 yards. "But basically, we just didnt tackle well." They were able to contain QB Josh Freeman to 183 yards passing and sacking him once. Eric Weems got the comeback from a 10-point deficit started by scoring on a 102-yard kickoff return. He tip-toed down the sideline and got a the Falcons back within three points. The Bucs would challenge that he stepped out of bounds. The ruling was confirmed and it was a touchdown. The last time Atlanta returned a kickoff for a touchdown was way back in 2002. DB Brent Grimes sealed the win with an interception that stopped Tampa Bay's final possession deep in Falcons territory. The Falcons would win the game, 28-24, winning their sixth straight game.
Analysis: Atlanta gave up some points to Tampa Bay in Week 13, but managed to get some help from the special teams to get the win. That is something that the Falcons don't do often, so Fantasy owners got a nice bonus. "Sometimes you've got to find a way to win a game when you're not at your best, and we obviously didn't play our best ballgame today," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "We were down by 10 points with about 10 minutes to go. We talk all the time about being resilient and somebody has to step up and make a play. The play today was the play of our kickoff return team, and a great individual effort by (Eric) Weems." Despite giving up a lot of yards on the ground, Fantasy owners should feel confident using Atlanta's DST in Week 14 when they face Carolina.
News:The Sports Xchange reports while Atlanta's offense is humming along, coach Mike Smith knows that his defense will be tested over the upcoming three-game road trip. The stretch starts with a tough NFC South matchup against the upstart Buccaneers in Week 13. The Falcons needed a goal-line stand with 2:44 left in the game to beat Tampa Bay, 27-21, in Week 9. "It was a very hard-fought game against Tampa here in the Dome," Smith said. "We know what we're going to have to defend, and we know how we're going to have to attack their defense. They're very familiar with us. I think it will be a typical NFC South game that will be very highly competitive."
Analysis: The Falcons will focus their defense on stopping Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman. He completed just 45.9 percent of his attempts (17 of 37) last week in his worst effort of the season. It was also the third-lowest percentage of his career. Tampa Bay is also leaning more heavily on rookie running back LeGarrette Blount, who rushed for 46 yards against Atlanta in Week 9 but has 80 or more yards in three of his last five games. Consider the Falcons DST at best a low-end No. 1 option for Week 13.
News: The Falcons defense, which had allowed an average of 300.7 yards over its last three games, showed some vulnerability against an explosive Packers offense in Week 12, allowing 418 yards. It held the visiting Packers to 17 points, though, thanks in part to a timely fumble recovery just as the Packers were about to score in the second quarter. The Falcons forced just the one turnover and recorded one sack.
Analysis: The Falcons didn't deliver a dominant defensive performance in this one, but they didn't embarrass themselves either, especially given the quality of their competition. The Falcons DST has shown the ability to step up against weaker competition, and its schedule will improve in the weeks to come. You might want to treat it as a No. 2 Fantasy option at Tampa Bay in Week 13, however.
News: The Falcons defense, which has done a good job of getting back on track over the last three weeks, allowing an average of 19.7 points on 300.7 yards, will have its work cut out for it when the Packers come to town in Week 12. The Packers have scored a total of 76 points over their last two games and allow just 7.2 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, tied for seventh-lowest in the NFL. And even though the Falcons might have pass rusher John Abraham back from a groin injury, he'll likely be less than 100 percent, which is especially bad news considering Packers QB Aaron Rodgers' reputation against blitzes. "I would imagine his QB rating is off the charts vs. the pressure package," Falcons coach Mike Smith said.
Analysis: The Falcons have done a good job of winning the turnover battle with a defense that is tied for second in the NFL with 15 interceptions, but Rodgers hasn't thrown an interception his last three games. The Falcons DST has proven susceptible to matchups in recent weeks after getting off to a hot start this season, so against an explosive team like the Packers, you should treat it as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Falcons did a solid job of limiting the Rams in Week 11. Atlanta held All-Pro RB Steven Jackson to just 54 yards rushing in the 34-17 win. Although QB Sam Bradford threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns, the Falcons defense was able to buckle down when it mattered most. DB William Moore picked off a shovel pass from the rookie at the 2 with 3:24 to go, snuffing a drive that could have made it a one-score game. "I wish it would have gone 98 (yards)," Moore said. "But overall it was just a huge play." With DL John Abraham (groin) inactive on Sunday, Atlanta was unable to record a sack in the victory.
Analysis: The Falcons have held their opponents to 21 points or fewer in each of the last three games and have been especially good against the run. Atlanta entered Week 11 with the seventh-best rushing defense in the league and was able to shut down one of the better backs in Jackson. Not having Abraham hurt their pass rush so check back to see if he will be able to play next week against the Packers. Green Bay has an explosive passing game, ranked 10th in the NFL, so consider the Falcons DST a low-end option for Week 12.
News: The Falcons defense has given up some points in recent games but will face off against a Rams offense in Week 11 that they match up very well with. St. Louis enters Sunday's contest ranked 23rd and 18th in the NFL in passing and rushing, respectively, while Atlanta sports the league's seventh-best rush defense and is 23rd against the pass. The Falcons have allowed an average of 19.4 points per game this season while the Rams are scoring 18.4 points per contest.
Analysis: The Falcons DST has been good in spots this season but they have been bailed out by their offense in recent weeks. The Rams are not particularly explosive on offense so the key to Sunday's game will be keeping RB Steven Jackson in check. If Atlanta can stuff the run and force rookie QB Sam Bradford to beat them, they will have an excellent chance at coming away with the win. DL John Abraham had two sacks a week ago against the Ravens and could give the Rams fits in Week 11. Consider the Falcons DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against St. Louis.
News: The Falcons accomplished their goal of stopping the Ravens' run game in Week 10, but still almost lost a close game. Matt Ryan hooked up with Roddy White for a 33-yard score with 20 seconds left to bail out the defense, who squandered a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, in a 26-21 win. The Falcons defense shut out the Ravens in the first half and held them to 76 yards. But Joe Flacco threw three second-half scores, including a 9-yard pass to Todd Heap with 1:05 left that put Baltimore up 21-20. The Ravens finished with 320 yards, but got only 116 on the ground. Atlanta forced two turnovers (including a fumble on a punt return) and John Abraham had two sacks.
Analysis: As good as the Falcons defense played in the first half in Week 10 they just couldn't contain the Baltimore offense for an entire game. The Falcons might be 7-2, but they have allowed their last four opponents to score 21 or more points. The offense has pretty much had to bail out the defense. The Falcons DST should be started when a favorable matchup is on the horizon, as is such in Week 11 against the Rams.
News: The Falcons defense held the Bucs to 278 yards in Week 9 after getting torched for more than 400 yards in each of the two weeks before. Atlanta will try to continue playing well in Week 10 against the Ravens, on Thursday night. The team's No. 1 priority on defense will be stopping Baltimore's running game. "Every week you stop the run and make a team one-dimensional," LB Curtis Lofton said. "Then we can unleash Abe (DE John Abraham) and (DE Kroy) Biermann." RB Ray Rice had 190 total yards last week against the Dolphins.
Analysis: The Ravens are not just a running team anymore, QB Joe Flacco has the NFL's best QB rating in the last two months (108.6). He also has Anquan Boldin on the outside and they continue to take shots down the field to test defenses early. Utilize the Falcons DST as a No. 2 Fantasy unit on Thursday night.
News: The Falcons defense, which allowed over 400 yards in each of its previous two games, got back on track with the return of DB Dunta Robinson from a concussion Week 9 against Tampa Bay, limiting the Buccaneers to 278 yards. The Buccaneers scored 21 points, but seven of them came on special teams. The Falcons also had a sack and two interceptions.
Analysis: The Falcons DST had a nice bounce-back performance against a winning ballclub in Week 9. It would have been better if not for an 89-yard kickoff return for Micheal Spurlock in the third quarter, but it showed the Falcons DST is still capable of performing like a No. 1 Fantasy unit after a couple of down weeks. With a tough matchup Week 10 against the Ravens, though, you might want to treat it more like a No. 2 option.
News: The Falcons defense -- which has already had trouble against the pass, ranking 27th in the league after allowing 412 yards to Bengals QB Carson Palmer in Week 7 -- could be without two key contributors against the Buccaneers in Week 9. Dunta Robinson is questionable with the same head injury that sidelined him against the Bengals, and Thomas DeCoud is in the same boat after leaving Week 7 following a helmet-to-helmet collision. The Falcons do rank sixth against the run (95.9 yards per game), which should help them against breakout running back LeGarrette Blount, but with their secondary banged up, their opponent might not be running the ball much anyway.
Analysis: The good news is the Falcons still rank fourth in the NFL with 11 interceptions and are facing a relatively inexperienced quarterback in Josh Freeman. Even if they give up a fair amount of yardage through the air, they could still create turnovers and have a productive afternoon. The injuries make the Falcons DST less than a true No. 1 Fantasy option, but with this matchup, you could certainly get by with it.
News: The Falcons defense looked like it had rebounded from last week's shaky performance against the Eagles when it allowed only three points to the visiting Bengals in the first half of Week 7, but it fell apart from there. The Bengals finished with 32 points on 469 yards -- not far off from the 31 points on 474 yards the Eagles put up last week. The Falcons did have three sacks and a fumble recovery, though.
Analysis: The Falcons DST was one of the most consistent units in Fantasy over the first five weeks of the season, leading the NFL in interceptions and only once allowing more than 15 points. But it has fallen on hard times since then. It'll have a week to regroup as the Falcons are on bye in Week 8. With a good matchup Week 9 against the Buccaneers, you should avoid cutting the Falcons DST if you can help it.
News: The Falcons' defense struggled mightily last weekend, yielding a season-high 474 yards and allowing three touchdowns of more than 30 yards at Philadelphia. Against the Bengals in Week 7, their banged-up secondary could give Cincinnati a golden opportunity to throw the ball. With last week's embarrassing performance, the Falcons now rank 25th against the pass, allowing 239.5 yards per game. They've also allowed the ninth-most Fantasy points per game to wide receivers (22.0), which could mean big things for Terrell Owens, who ranks fifth among wide receivers with 61 targets.
Analysis: That doesn't mean the Falcons won't be trying to correct what went wrong last week. "Defensively, you can't let people throw the ball over your head, you give up three explosive touchdowns, you're going to have a tough day," Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. But with Dunta Robinson (concussion) and Sean Weatherspoon (knee) likely out, the Falcons will be playing short-handed. The Falcons DST still has a knack for making big plays, which is why it ranks 10th in standard Fantasy leagues, but coming off last week's debacle, now might not be the best time to take a chance on it.
News: The Falcons defense, which came into the game allowing an average of 14.0 points per game, second-best in the NFL, wasn't nearly as impressive Week 6 at Philadelphia. The Falcons allowed 31 points on 474 yards. They also had only one sack and one turnover.
Analysis: The Falcons had only twice allowed 300 yards in a game, much less 400. They had only once allowed 20 points in a game, much less 30. Of course, they did most of that damage against weaker offensive teams like the Steelers, Cardinals, 49ers and Browns, so perhaps this game exposed the Falcons DST as nothing more than a matchups type in Fantasy. The Falcons face a Bengals team in Week 7 that isn't as strong offensively as the Eagles, but you still wouldn't want to treat the Falcons DST as more than a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Falcons defense, which has thrived against weaker offensive teams like the Steelers, Cardinals, 49ers and Browns this season, will visit an Eagles team in Week 6 that ranks eighth in total offense, including 10th in rushing offense and 13th in passing offense. With Michael Vick still recovering from cartilage damage in his ribs, the Falcons will likely be facing Kevin Kolb, who hasn't been as effective as Vick this season but showed serious improvement last week at San Francisco, throwing for 253 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: This should be an interesting matchup. The Falcons lead the NFL with 10 interceptions, but the Eagles have thrown only one all season. The Falcons have allowed a 72.5 quarterback rating this season, but Kolb had a 103.3 mark last week. Still, the Falcons DST has allowed only 14 points per game this season, second-best in the NFL, so we give it the upper hand here. It did have a respectable performance at New Orleans in Week 3, after all. The Falcons DST isn't exactly a must-start option for this week, but it's still a low-end No. 1 unit in Fantasy.
News: The Falcons defense had another stellar performance Week 5 at Cleveland, limiting the Browns to 10 points on 269 yards. The Falcons recorded three sacks and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and one fumble. They even got a defensive touchdown late in the fourth quarter when DL Kroy Biermann tipped QB Jake Delhomme's pass up in the air, caught the deflection and sprinted 41 yards to the end zone.
Analysis: The Falcons ranked sixth in points allowed (15.0) coming into the game, and they only improved that ranking with this outing. They also lead the NFL with 10 interceptions. They've taken advantage of some bad offenses early in the season but have also shown the ability to make big plays. The Falcons DST faces a unique challenge Week 6 at Philadelphia, but it's been good enough all year that you can still treat it as a low-end No. 1 option for that matchup.
News: The Falcons have allowed an average of 15.0 points per game, sixth best in the league, and look to continue their strong defensive showing against a 21st-ranked Browns offense Week 5 at Cleveland. The Browns hope to have Jake Delhomme back after he badly sprained his right ankle in the season opener. They've started backup Seneca Wallace the last three games. Of course, the quarterback situation isn't nearly as much of a concern for the Falcons as the running back situation, where Peyton Hillis has emerged as an every-down option and rushed for a total of 246 yards over the last two weeks."He's a big, strong back and we're going to have to put our pads on," coach Mike Smith said. "I told the guys today it's going to be a two-chinstrap game, there's no doubt about it. Everybody needs to pack an extra one because it will be a physical football game."
Analysis: The Falcons DST leads the NFL with eight interceptions. It surrendered a season-low 262 yards and forced three turnovers against the 49ers last week. The Falcons are plenty familiar with Delhomme from his days in Carolina, so the switch at quarterback should only work to their benefit. If they're able to force the same turnovers out of him that they've forced out of other quarterbacks all season, they could build up an early lead and make Hillis a non-issue. Even if the breakout running back has another big game, the rest of the offense likely won't, making the Falcons DST once again a fantastic play in Fantasy.
News: The Falcons, who entered the game allowing only 15.3 points per game -- sixth-best in the NFL -- only improved that number in Week 4, limiting the visiting 49ers to 14 points on 262 yards. The Falcons also had two interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: This wasn't the toughest matchup for the Falcons DST, as the 49ers have struggled against just about everybody they've played. Still, part of being a high-end Fantasy DST is capitalizing on the good matchups, and the Falcons DST certainly did that. With another good matchup Week 5 at Cleveland, it's once again looking like a top Fantasy option.
News: After starting the season 0-3, the 49ers fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and replaced him with Mike Johnson. The first test for Johnson comes in Week 4 against the Falcons. Atlanta is well aware of the coaching change in San Francisco. "You never know what to expect," Falcons DB Dunta Robinson said. "We're not going to go into this thing holding our breath in case they show us something new." Falcons coach Mike Smith is ready for whatever San Francisco throws his team's way. "Therell be some unknowns, I think more in the situational down and distances than anything else, but in terms of the core of what they do, I dont think theyll change 180 degrees," Smith said.
Analysis: The Falcons might be allowing 339.7 yards per game, but they are near the top of the league in scoring defense, allowing 15.3 points per game (sixth). The 49ers are second to last in the NFL in scoring offense (12.7 ppg) and that is why they felt they needed to make a change on offense. This matchup appears tailored made for the Falcons DST to have a good week, but be aware the 49ers might be ready to take some chances on offense now that Johnson is running the show. Consider the Falcons DST a good Fantasy bye-week replacement for Week 4.
News: The Falcons DST played well Sunday at New Orleans in Week 3. The Falcons had two interceptions, two sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. On special teams, Thomas DeCoud had one punt return for no yards, and Eric Weems had three kickoff returns for 76 yards. Ovie Mughelli also had one kickoff return for 6 yards. DeCoud and Brent Grimes had the interceptions, and John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux had sacks. Mike Peterson forced the fumble, and Chauncey Davis recovered the fumble.
Analysis: The Falcons DST should be considered a sleeper for Week 4 against San Francisco. The 49ers offense has struggled, and the Falcons are starting to play well. Consider the Falcons DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against San Francisco.
News: The Falcons DST has played relatively well in their first two games in terms of yards, allowing 310.5 per game. Week 3 foe New Orleans is not even averaging 300 yards per game so far. Still, coach Mike Smith is worried, even without RB Reggie Bush (leg) in the backfield. "Now (without Bush), those (touches) are going to have to be distributed amongst some pretty darn good players. When you start talking about their tight ends and the wide receiving crew that they have. I think it just puts a little bit more of an unknown in terms of how theyre going to attack us,"Smith told the Falcons official website.
Analysis: The Falcons scoring defense has been stellar, allowing just 22 points in the first two games. However, the matchup for Week 3, at New Orleans, is another situation. The Saints shredded the Falcons in 2009 for 444 yards per game while sweeping Atlanta. This year, the Saints are yet to get on that pace. Still, they are much more dangerous playing at home, so consider the Falcons DST a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 3.
News: The Falcons DST was effective against the Cardinals in Week 2, though the Cards had a lot to do with it. Penalized a ton and forced into tough spots offensively, Arizona had just seven points and 267 net yards. The Falcons had two sacks, three interceptions and a forced fumble.
Analysis: About the only bad play the Falcons gave up was a long touchdown run to Tim Hightower, the second long touchdown run they've allowed in as many weeks. With the Saints next on their schedule, the Falcons defense will need to bring its A-game in Week 3. We'd consider another option over this DST considering the potent offense the Saints have.
News: The Falcons defense did a great job in Week 1 at Pittsburgh -- until overtime kicked in and Rashard Mendenhall scored the game-winner on a 50-yard run. But until then, they held the burly running back to 70 yards on 21 carries and held their own against the depleted Steelers' pass attack (Hines Ward did get 100 yards). The Falcons will be challenged in a different way in Week 2 when the Cardinals come to the Georgia Dome, fresh off a close win at St. Louis. With Larry Fitzgerald nursing a knee injury but expected to be active and an offense finding their way through the air, the Cardinals are sure to test the Falcons' improved defensive backs. The Falcons will also get big DT Jonathan Babineaux back on their defensive line in this game.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is an OK option, not a great option, for Week 2. They should be able to keep Tim Hightower under wraps on the ground and get some pressure on QB Derek Anderson, but otherwise there are questions about how this defense will do. Consider other options before going with these Falcons in Week 2, and cutting them for another unit before they play at New Orleans in Week 3 justifies going in a different direction further.
News: The Week 1 matchup between the Falcons and Steelers ended up being a showdown of which defense would crack first. Unfortunately, the Falcons found out the hard way it would be them. Rashard Mendenhall's 50-yard scamper in overtime gave Pittsburgh the only touchdown of the game and the Steelers a 15-9 win. "I thought (the defense) played well for most of the game, but you can't give up explosive plays like we did in the overtime," head coach Mike Smith said. "It's a long season; this is just Week 1." Atlanta had held Pittsburgh to three field goals. It could have been five field goals, but Jeff Reed missed two kicks, including one with 43 seconds left. Atlanta held Pittsburgh to 14 first downs and 354 yards (143 rushing). They forced one turnover and had three sacks of QB Dennis Dixon.
Analysis: The Falcons were lucky they got to face Dixon, who was making just his second NFL start, and not Ben Roethlisberger or the results could have been a lot worse. One thing the Falcons did accomplish was putting a pass rush on Dixon. They definitely struggled rushing the passer in 2009, but the emergence of Kroy Biermann, who had a sack Sunday, is going to help them improve in that area. We still need to see a little more consistency from Atlanta before the Falcons DST becomes a must-own Fantasy option. The Falcons play the Cardinals in Week 2. Arizona struggled in its first game with QB Derek Anderson against the Rams in Week 1, so the Falcons DST might be a sleeper Fantasy option for Week 2.
News: The Falcons open the 2010 season on Sunday in Pittsburgh against a team that will be without starting QB Ben Roethlisberger, who is serving a four-game suspension. Atlanta will be hoping to improve in 2010 on a defense that has finished 20th or worse in total defense for five consecutive seasons, and adding free agent cornerback Dunta Robinson should be a good start. The return of defensive tackle Peria Jerry should help as well. The 2009 first-rounder missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury, but should be a solid run stuffer -- particularly against a Steelers team that may ride Rashard Mendenhall with Roethlisberger out.
Analysis: The Falcons were a team that allowed 348.9 yards per game in 2009, as well as 20.3 points per game. Adding two potential marquee players, along with rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon -- a first-round pick -- boosts the confidence of a defense that was the NFL's worst on third down last year. Another area Atlanta needs to improve is in pass rush. It totaled just 28 sacks in '09, which ranked near the bottom of the league. Atlanta believes it has found a player that can hang with DE John Abraham in Kory Biermann, who had three sacks in the preseason. The Falcons DST might be a Fantasy sleeper start in Week 1 since they will get a chance to face an inexperienced QB in Dennis Dixon, but they aren't quite a must-own option yet.
News:Peria Jerry is back, Dunta Robinson seems ready to return and the Atlanta Falcons are feeling better about their defense. Though third-down efficiency and penalties are still a concern, but coach Mike Smith is more confident with the season opener at Pittsburgh only two weeks away. In Atlanta's 16-6 victory two days ago at Miami, the Dolphins were 2 for 12 on third down. Losing to New England the week before, the Falcons looked helpless as quarterback Tom Brady led conversions on five of his seven third-down snaps in the first half. "We missed some things on the defensive side of the ball even though we played more efficiently than the week before," Smith said Sunday. "There's still a lot of things that we can correct."
Analysis: The return of Jerry, a starting nose tackle who missed all but two games as a rookie last year, should help. The former first-round pick looked healthy in disrupting a third-down play with a clean hit of Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington early in the fourth quarter. Robinson, the high-priced cornerback who is practicing despite what he described as a partially torn hamstring, missed his third straight preseason game -- but the Falcons believe he will be ready to face the Steelers. Adding two potential marquee players, along with rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon -- a first-round pick -- boosts the confidence of a defense that was the NFL's worst on third down last year. Despite not having a big-name pass rush or kick return game, this unit has a chance to surprise this season. Consider the Falcons DST late in deeper drafts, or just aim for them off waivers when they have favorable matchups (like their two annual games against the Bucs).
News: The Atlanta Falcons were stout against the run, dug in on third down and came up with a big interception at Miami in preseason play on Friday. The unit gave up only a field goal while Miami starting quarterback Chad Henne was in the game and beat the Dolphins 16-6. Middle linebacker Curtis Lofton led the Falcons' defensive charge with 11 tackles, two for losses. Erik Coleman intercepted a pass in the end zone, and the Dolphins converted only one of nine third- and fourth-down situations with Henne. The Falcons are hoping for defensive improvement after ranking 23rd in the NFL last year in yards allowed per play despite a 9-7 record. "We wanted to come out and set a tone, and we did a good job of that," Lofton said. "We've got two weeks left to do some fine-tuning. It's like a car -- you've got to keep fine-tuning it so it will run pretty."
Analysis: The Falcons defense had a great game here, and they did it without big free-agent acquisition Dunta Robinson. Despite not having a big-name pass rush or kick return game, this unit has a chance to surprise this season. Consider them late in deeper drafts, or just aim for them off waivers when they have favorable matchups (like their two annual games against the Bucs).
News: The Falcons selected Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon with the 19th overall pick Thursday night and believe he'll make an immediate impact on a unit that was ravaged by injuries, didn't get much pressure on the quarterback, and gave up a huge amount of passing yards. A second-team All-American as a senior, Weatherspoon had 4.5 sacks, 14.5 tackles for losses and 111 tackles overall. He put up even more impressive numbers as a junior - 155 tackles, 18.5 stops behind the line and five sacks. He led the Tigers in tackles his last three seasons and finished 10th in Big 12 Conference history with 413 career stops. Atlanta also added DT Corey Peters, CB Dominique Franks and safety Shann Schillinger via the draft.
Analysis: The 6-foot-1, 239-pound Weatherspoon should step up the production at either of the outside linebacker positions, which were manned last season by Stephen Nicholas and Mike Peterson, who will be 34 at the start of next season. He should eventually be a solid run stopper for the Falcons but playing time could be an issue in 2010. The Falcons DST remains a No. 2 option even though Weatherspoon joins fellow newcomer CB Dunta Robinson on the Atlanta defense.
News: The Atlanta Falcons have signed free-agent cornerback Dunta Robinson, the Houston Texans' career interceptions leader, to a six-year, $57 million contract. Robinson's signing is important because the Falcons finished 28th in the league against the pass last season. The native of Athens, Ga., had 13 interceptions in the last six seasons with Houston.
Analysis: Robinson will be a huge upgrade in Atlanta. The Falcons desperately needed help in the secondary, and Robinson is one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. But they still need to improve their pass rush before we consider them worthy of a draft pick in Fantasy this season.
News: While holding the Bucs to just 10 points, the Falcons DST added one sack and two interceptions of QB Josh Freeman in their win at Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is nowhere near the top of good units for Fantasy owners to consider in 2010. They'll likely be available off waivers unless they pick up some quality defenders, especially in the defensive secondary, by this summer.
News: The Atlanta Falcons had everything working in the 31-3 win over the Bills in Week 16. That certainly includes the defense as the Falcons DST limited Buffalo to just 178 total yards in the game. The Falcons DST scored on an 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Lawrence Sidbury. They sacked QB Brian Brohm twice in the game and picked him off twice. Fred Jackson also fumbled in the game in which the Falcons recovered.
Analysis: The Falcons DST came up with two sacks, three turnovers forced and a defensive touchdown. The Falcons DST is an inconsistent unit, but are certainly worth a look in Week 17 at Tampa Bay. The Bucs aren't the best offense in the world and the Falcons seem hot after this Week 16 win.
News: The Falcons DST held the Jets to 314 yards and seven points in a Week 15 victory. They also picked off Mark Sanchez three times and tallied a pair of sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is an inconsistent unit, but are certainly worth a look in Week 16 against a poor offensive Bills team.
News: The Falcons defense put up a respectable fight against the Saints in a Week 14 loss, although they didnt do too much that was noteworthy. The unit failed to record a turnover but limited the Saints to only 26 points. Drew Brees threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns on 31 for 40 passing. Pierre Thomas led a rushing attack that gained 95 yards on the ground.
Analysis: The Saints have the ability to put up some serious points and the Falcons were not a recommended unit for Week 14. However, the Falcons will have an easier matchup in Week 15 at the Jets in a game that will likely be a defensive struggle. However, they should only be considered a last resort for the game.
News: The Falcons DST struggled Sunday against the Eagles in a 34-7 loss. The Falcons had two sacks but no turnovers. Eric Weems had six kickoff returns for 157 yards and two punt returns for 20 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is a low-end Fantasy option in all leagues. Don't plan on using the Falcons DST in Week 14 against the Saints.
News: The Atlanta Falcons did not play all that well against the 1-9 Tampa Bay Bucs on Sunday of Week 12. Atlanta was losing for much of the game and they lost their starting quarterback and running back in the game. The Falcons DST allowed 318 yards of offense to the inept Bucs. Atlanta did win the game on a late-game game-winning touchdown drive, 20-17. The Falcons DST picked up just one sack in the game and forced only one turnover.
Analysis: To recap, the Falcons DST couldn't limit the yards or points of a team with only one win this season and they managed only a single turnover and sack in the game. They don't get after the quarterback very well and aren't a useful unit outside of weeks with real favorable matchups. They play the Eagles in Week 13 and we wouldn't recommend their Fantasy use.
News: The Falcons allowed 34 points and 456 total net yards in Week 11 at the Giants in an overtime loss. They forced one turnover on an interception and had one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons got picked apart by Eli Manning to the tune of 384 passing yards. They controlled the run pretty well, but were burned through the air and Fantasy owners still can't rely on this defensive unit for much. They don't get after the quarterback very well and aren't a useful unit outside of weeks with real favorable matchups. They play the Buccaneers at home in Week 12, which does seem to be a good matchup.
News: The Atlanta Falcons did not have a very good game on Sunday of Week 10 at Carolina. The Panthers walked away victors, handling the Falcons 28-19 in the game. The Falcons DST gave up 380 total yards of offense to the normally offensively inept Panthers. The Falcons did not force a single turnover or make a single sack in the game. That is how you lose football games.
Analysis: The Falcons DST may have had the worst game of the season for any DST. They did nothing to garner positive Fantasy points. The Falcons tend to give up too many yards to their opponents. The team has some dangerous playmakers but their DST is only worth using in the right matchups. Atlanta plays at the Giants in Week 11. We don't really recommend the Atlanta DST as a viable Fantasy option.
News: Atlanta needed a late offensive surge to come away from the Week 9 home game against Washington victorious, 31-17. The Falcons DST gave up 312 yards to the Redskins, a little too much considering Washington's offense has been dismal this year. That said, the Falcons did sack quarterback Jason Campbell five times, injuring him twice, and they also picked off one of his passes. The interception was huge, however, as Tye Hill returned it 62 yards to the house in the 1st quarter for his first career INT for a TD.
Analysis: The Falcons tend to give up too many yards to their opponents. The team has some dangerous playmakers but their DST is only worth using in the right matchups. Atlanta plays at Carolina in Week 10 and the Panthers do not have a good offense. They deserve a look off the waiver wire.
News: Like many teams before them, the Falcons couldn't stop the Saints offense Week 8 at New Orleans, but they did get some big defensive plays against them, including a touchdown on a fumble recovery by Kroy Biermann in the second quarter. They recovered three fumbles in all, picked up two sacks and recorded an interception, allowing 35 points on 437 yards.
Analysis: You knew the Falcons DST would give up plenty of points and yards to the Saints on Monday, but the big plays helped counteract those numbers. The Falcons have a few playmakers on defense, but their DST is only worth using in the right matchups. The Falcons have such a matchup Week 9 against the Redskins, so give their DST a look off the waiver wire.
News: The Falcons had a miserable defensive performance at Dallas in Week 7, allowing 37 points on 414 yards. They recorded two sacks and recovered one fumble, so they didn't make many big plays either.
Analysis: The Falcons DST entered the game with 15 combined sacks and interceptions in five games, so it gets enough big plays to have Fantasy relevance. It's the kind of unit you wouldn't want to start except in a favorable matchup, so keep it reserved for Week 8 at New Orleans.
News: The Falcons DST totaled two sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles while holding Chicago to 14 points in Week 6. Bears QB Jay Cutler threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but the Falcons did an impressive job of shutting down RB Matt Forte (23 yards on 15 carries). In the game, the team did lose rookie DB William Moore (hamstring) and CB Brian Williams (torn ACL) to injuries, but they still held on to win.
Analysis: The Falcons will get another tough challenge in Week 7 when they play at the Cowboys in Dallas. We're not sold on Atlanta's DST just yet, but a strong performance against the 'Boys would do the trick. Consider the Falcons DST a decent option off waivers for their coming game.
News: The Falcons had a stellar defensive performance at San Francisco in Week 5, limiting the 49ers to 10 points on 279 yards. They recorded three sacks and one interception and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Falcons DST isn't a must-start Fantasy unit, but it's useful in the right matchups. The Falcons host the Bears and Jay Cutler in Week 6, so you might want to leave it on waivers.
News: In the Falcons' Week 3 loss at the Patriots, the defense didn't convert a sack or a turnover. The Patriots hung 26 points on them as Fred Taylor and Randy Moss each had 100 yards of offense in the contest.
Analysis: The Falcons are on bye in Week 4 and play at San Francisco in Week 5. Consider other options for the coming week's action (such as the 49ers, Bears, Bengals and Redskins) before considering this DST again for their next game.
News: The Atlanta Falcons say rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry is out for the season after injuring his left knee in a victory over the Panthers. Jerry, the team's first-round pick out of Mississippi, went down in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 28-20 victory. Coach Mike Smith said the rookie will be placed on injured reserve. The Falcons are thin along the defensive line, so the loss of Jerry is especially damaging. Thomas Johnson will likely take over Jerry's spot in the lineup alongside Jonathan Babineaux. Atlanta also has Trey Lewis, who missed all of 2008 with a knee injury and has yet to play this season, along with seventh-round pick Vance Walker.
Analysis: This is bad news for the Falcons as they are already dealing with a porous run defense. This might be the beginning of some tough treading for the unit since many teams will run right at Atlanta, starting with the Patriots (to a degree) in Week 3. Because they'll face the Patriots in New England in their upcoming game, the Falcons DST isn't worth owning in Fantasy play. Keep them on waivers.
News: The Falcons forced two turnovers and sacked Panthers QB Jake Delhomme once in Week 2 vs. Carolina. They allowed 440 yards of total offense and 20 points in a 28-20 win.
Analysis: This was a mediocre output for a Falcons team that had dominated the Miami Dolphins in the opener. They weren't quite as active in Week 2, but remain a decent low-end starting option in leagues of 12-plus teams. They have a poor matchup in Week 3 at New England, however.
News: The Falcons DST held the Dolphins to seven points and 259 yards in a 19-7 Week 1 victory. They also forced four turnovers (three fumbles, one interception) and tallied four sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons didn't come into Week 1 as a vaunted unit, but their performance against the Dolphins will have many Fantasy owners thinking about adding them as a No. 2 option in deeper leagues. They might be worth a shot in Week 2 vs. Carolina as the Panthers have made a mess through the air thus far.
News: Falcons DE John Abraham was listed on the team's injury report with a knee injury Wednesday, but Abraham said he's fine. "Coach always puts me on the report for something," Abraham said Thursday.
Analysis: Abraham finished last season with 38 tackles, four forced fumbles and 16.5 sacks. He is one of the top sack artists in the game and a high-end option in IDP formats when healthy. Consider him a good option for Week 1 against the Dolphins, and his presence on the field will help the Falcons DST.
News: CB Tye Hill was traded from St. Louis to Atlanta in exchange for a 2010 draft pick. Hill is expected to boost the cornerback depth for the Falcons.
Analysis: Hill adds some experience to the Falcons' secondary but is too injury prone to be considered a game changer for the course of the season. The Falcons DST remains a No. 2 unit heading into 2009, worth using as a one-week replacement off waivers during the season.
News: Safety Erik Coleman knew the Atlanta Falcons would grimace when they watched film Monday. Turns out the Falcons' pass rush and coverages were worse than he imagined. "We were getting after them on first and second down, but on third down, I think it was just disappointing," Coleman said. "I think everyone's intentions are well. We're covering guys, but we've just got to be aware of the different situations on the routes that they're running." San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers shredded the Falcons on four third-down plays early in the second quarter of Atlanta's 27-24 preseason win Saturday. The Chargers needed 13 yards, and Rivers hit Malcom Floyd for 18. Vincent Jackson made an acrobatic 32-yard catch on third-and-18. Rivers connected with Chris Chambers for 18 yards on third-and-17. Even worse was a third-and-24 that resulted in a 48-yard touchdown to running back Michael Bennett. As badly as starting cornerbacks Chris Houston and Brent Grimes looked in giving up long plays, coach Mike Smith blamed the entire defense for breakdowns against a Chargers offense that was without star playmakers LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates. "It's not just the secondary," Smith said. "It's team defense. They're all out there together on third down, and they have a job to do. Obviously, when it takes place in a passing play, the first thing people are going to assume is that it was something in the secondary. That's not necessarily the case."
Analysis: The rebuilding Falcons DST has a chance to make major strides next season, but it is definitely still a major work in progress. Consider it no more than a low-end sleeper entering 2009.
News: The Falcons' first two draft picks, defensive tackle Peria Jerry and safety William Moore, could earn starting jobs in training camp.
Analysis: The Falcons want badly to improve their defense after losing linebackers Keith Brooking and Michael Boley, defensive tackle Grady Jackson, safety Lawyer Milloy and cornerback Domonique Foxworth. Perry is a not-too-big, not-too-slow defensive tackle with a good motor, he's not expected to put up stats worthy of use in Fantasy IDP leagues just yet. Moore has some good intangibles and has a shot to start right away for the Falcons as a rookie. A strong preseason will go a long way with him in Fantasy, so keep an eye on him. Moore is only worth a late-round pick in dynasty/keeper league drafts and a middle-round choice in deeper IDP formats. The rebuilding Falcons DST has a chance to make major strides next season, but consider it no more than a low-end sleeper entering 2009.
News: Like so many teams before them, the Falcons couldn't stop the Cardinals' pass-heavy offense Saturday in a Wild Card playoff game at Arizona. They allowed 30 points on 357 yards, recording just one interception.
Analysis: The Falcons had a successful season, leading to a playoff berth and nearly a division title. However, the Falcons defensive unit was never a particularly attractive Fantasy option because it consistently gave up heavy yardsage. The rebuilding unit has a chance to make major strides next season, but consider it no more than a low-end sleeper entering 2009.
News: The Falcons allowed 408 yards of total offense and 27 points to the Rams in Week 17. They did not force a turnover, but had three sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons had a successful season, leading to a playoff berth and nearly a division title. However, the Falcons defensive unit was never a particularly attractive Fantasy option because they gave up a lot of yards and were rarely able to shut down opponents. They are a young team that is actually in the process of rebuilding defensively despite their success this season. They'll have a chance to take some big strides next season.
News: The Falcons defense didn't have its best showing Week 16 at Minnesota, allowing 17 points on 350 yards. However, it did recover four fumbles and record three sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons DST has thrived on sacks in recent leagues but still isn't a consistent unit for Fantasy purposes. It hosts the Rams in Week 17, making it a decent sleeper option, but keep in mind the Falcons might rest of their starters in preparation for the playoffs.
News: Against the Buccaneers in Week 15, the Falcons defense allowed only 10 points on 325 yards. It recorded four sacks -- three by John Abraham -- and one interception.
Analysis: The Falcons DST had one of its best performances of the season and will usually come away with a few sacks with John Abraham on the line. It has a decent matchup Week 16 at Minnesota, but it ends up in too many shootouts for us to recommend it in Fantasy.
News: The Falcons defense without a sack or an interception Week 14 at New Orleans, allowing 29 points on 414 yards. It had three sacks in each of his last two games.
Analysis: The Falcons DST allowed 16 points on only 201 yards last week at San Diego, so it remains an inconsistent unit in Fantasy. It has a so-so matchup against the Buccaneers in Week 15, so you could probably do better in standard 10- or 12-team leagues. Against the Buccaneers in Week 2, the Falcons allowed 24 points on 234 yards.
News: At San Diego in Week 13, the Falcons allowed 16 points on only 201 yards. They also recorded three sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons would have allowed even fewer points if not for some turnovers by their offense. The Falcons DST remains an inconsistent Fantasy unit, though -- one better left for easy matchups. Keep it reserved for Week 14 at New Orleans.
News: The Falcons defense allowed 28 points on 408 yards against the Panthers in Week 12, recording three sacks. The Falcons did, however, get a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown by Harry Douglas in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: If not for the punt return, the Falcons DST wouldn't have offered much to its Fantasy owners. It rarely does anything world beating and remains an option better left for the most ideal of matchups, which doesn't include Week 13 at San Diego.
News: The Falcons didn't exactly shut down the high-scoring Broncos offense in Week 11, giving up 24 points on 332 yards. They recorded only one sack and didn't force a single turnover.
Analysis: The Falcons DST had done more damage in recent weeks, but it remains a low-end Fantasy unit serviceable only in the best matchups. It doesn't have one of those matchups Week 12 against the Panthers, so leave it on waivers.
News: The Falcons defense, coming off a game in which it allowed only 77 yards to the Raiders, allowed 521 against the Saints in Week 10. It limited them to 20 points, though -- seven of which came on a Hail Mary to end the game. The Falcons defense also had a sack and three interceptions, including one that Chevis Jackson returned for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Falcons DST showed nice bend-but-don't-break ability against the Saints, but that particular characteristic doesn't translate so well to Fantasy. Start the unit only when it has a favorable matchup, which it clearly doesn't Week 11 against the Broncos.
News: The Falcons defense had a headline-grabbing performance at Oakland in Week 9, allowing only 77 yards in a shutout. John Abraham recorded three sacks, and Erik Coleman contributed an interception. The Falcons also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Falcons DST hasn't demonstrated shutdown ability in the past, so their performance Sunday probably had more to do with the Raiders' incompetence on offense than anything else. Still, the unit deserves some attention in Fantasy. Just don't expect it to perform so well against the Saints in Week 10.
News: At Philadelphia in Week 8, the Falcons allowed 27 points on 432 yards, recording two sacks. They also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Falcons DST doesn't put up reliable stats, as it showed in Week 8. Don't bother with it except in a cupcake matchup, which it actually has Week 9 at the Raiders, which gained only 234 total yards at Baltimore in Week 8. Consider the Falcons DST a decent sleeper for the matchup.
News: In Week 8, a Falcons defense that ranks 20th vs. the run and 26th vs. the pass will take on an Eagles offense in Philadelphia that's rolling up 349.3 yards per game on average and will get Brian Westbrook back at running back this week.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is not a desirable Fantasy option unless faced with a cake matchup. This isn't it. Consider other options in Week 8.
News: Aside from the first career sack by DE Jamaal Anderson, the Falcons DST didn't create much fanfare vs. Chicago in Week 6. The Bears were able to score 20 points on them, and the club didn't turn over the ball once.
Analysis: While the Falcons are the feel-good story of the NFL this season after a horrible 2007 campaign, their DST unit isn't worth trotting out in Fantasy play. The Falcons are on bye in Week 7 and play at Philadelphia in Week 8. Keep them off rosters until then.
News:Kyle Orton's gaudy passing day last week didn't distract the Atlanta Falcons. They still say their top defensive challenge against Chicago on Sunday will be containing Matt Forte and the Bears' running game. Orton had a career-high 334 yards passing with two touchdowns in the Bears' 34-7 win at Detroit. Forte was held to a season-low 36 yards rushing, but the rookie ran for a touchdown and had a touchdown catch. "They're going to try to establish the running game," said Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking. "The rookie, it's amazing how many touches he gets. He's a physical runner. He's got some speed and he's good at catching the ball out of the backfield. It's a big test for us."
Analysis: Forte leads NFL rookies with 383 yards rushing. He also leads the Bears (3-2) with 22 catches and ranks fourth in the league with 555 total yards from scrimmage. The Falcons defense have improved some under first-year head coach Mike Smith, but they are still not an elite unit. The Falcons DST remains just a bye-week Fantasy replacement.
News: The Falcons allowed 24 points and 408 yards of offense in Week 5 at Green Bay. They forced one turnover and recorded two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons have been a below average Fantasy unit all season and this game does not change matters much. They don't record many sacks, give up a good amount of yards and points and are not a unit that forces a lot of turnovers. Even during the bye weeks, there are better options for Week 6 when the Falcons take on the Bears.
News: The Falcons DST gave up 24 points and 401 yards to the Panthers in a Week 4 loss, and did not record an interception, sack or fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Panthers are a decent offensive unit, but the Falcons made them looked like a juggernaut in Week 4. Atlanta hosts the Falcons in Week 5, and you'd be insane to start their DST against a Packers offense that can score at will on occasion.
News: Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen made his first career start Week 3 against the Falcons and the Atlanta defense made sure to make it memorable. Thigpen threw three interceptions, his last one being returned 10 yards for a touchdown by DB Chris Houston. Atlanta's other two interceptions came from Brent Grimes and Erik Coleman. Kansas City managed 301 total yards, including 184 on the ground. Falcons DL John Abraham had two sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons defense might not have many bright moments in 2008, but Week 3 was a highlight reel going against the Chiefs. The Falcons defense should get better under first year head coach Mike Smith, but the Falcons DST remains a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 4 against the Panthers.
News: The Falcons allowed 234 yards of offense and 24 points in Week 2 at Tampa Bay. They forced one turnover and sacked the quarterback twice.
Analysis: The Falcons have allowed 20-plus points in each of the first two games of the season and have been a middle-of-the-road Fantasy defense so far. But that's something that could help Fantasy owners in Week 3 as they'll be available in a lot of leagues for a very good matchup against a week Chiefs offense.
News: The Falcons DST allowed the Lions to score 21 points on Sunday in Week 1. The Lions amassed a total of 308 yards. Atlanta recorded three sacks by John Abraham and one interception by Lawyer Milloy.
Analysis: Atlanta's defense was decent on Sunday against the Lions but nothing to write home about. They travel to Tampa Bay in Week 2. The Bucs put up 20 points against the Saints and should be able to do more damage against the Falcons next week. For that reason, the Falcons DST is not recommended to start in Fantasy next week.
News: The Falcons defense made a stand during Friday's 17-3 preseason win against Tennessee. They limited the Titans to just 215 yards, including 75 rushing yards. They forced one interception (Chevis Jackson) and came away with three sacks (Kroy Biermann, John Abraham, Willie Evans). Tennessee could only muster a 50-yard field goal from John Vaughn.
Analysis: Atlanta heads into the 2008 season under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Smith. He has a defensive background, so players like Abraham, Mike Boley and Keith Brooking can appreciate his enthusiam. However, the Falcons defense has a lot of ground to make up after an awful 2007 season. Consider the Falcons DST a less than desireable Fantasy option.
News: Falcons cornerback Von Hutchins, projected as the team's nickel back, is out for the year after injuring his foot on the first day of training camp. The Falcons had hoped it was only a sprain, but surgery was deemed necessary after Hutchins saw a specialist in Charlotte, N.C. In another impending move, the agent for Grady Jackson said the massive defensive tackle has agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Falcons.
Analysis: While the Falcons' defensive line is expected to get better with the addition of Jackson, the secondary takes a solid hit with the loss of Hutchins, who was a capable cornerback if anything. Now his spot will be fought over by second-year corner David Irons and rookie Chevis Jackson. Translation: Teams will take to the air against the Falcons. Ignore this DST unless they surprise in 2008.
News: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports via CB DeAngelo Hall that the star cornerback is going to be traded to Oakland in exchange for second- and sixth-round picks. Hall is a two-time Pro Bowl selection, but he is nearly as well known for his outspoken demeanor. He clashed openly with former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino last season and was benched for a half after a sideline confrontation. Hall was the Falcons' No. 1 pick in 2004. He is scheduled to be in Oakland later this week to sign the deal. "There is just some tweaking of the language that needs to be done, some minor details," Hall said. "No deal breakers."
Analysis: Expect this DST to be an unreliable Fantasy option again in 2008 even with Mike Smith as the man in charge of this team. They're not draftable as a No. 3 DST.
News: The Falcons signed free-agent defensive backs Erik Coleman and Von Hutchins on Saturday. Coleman, who has seven interceptions and 338 tackles in four years with the Jets, is the likely replacement for safety Chris Crocker, an unrestricted free agent. Coleman, who had 41 tackles in 15 games last season, led the Jets with 10 tackles and intercepted a pass thrown by Tom Brady in a playoff loss to New England during the 2006 season. Hutchins, who has played cornerback and safety, spent his first two seasons with Indianapolis before joining Houston in 2006. He has 142 career tackles with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. Hutchins, from Mississippi, made 15 starts for Houston last season and set a career high with 94 tackles.
Analysis: As Coleman appears to be a replacement for Crocker, Hutchins might be the replacement for DeAngelo Hall as the Falcons may try and deal their star cornerback. Expect this DST to be an unreliable Fantasy option again in 2008 even with Mike Smith as the man in charge of this team. Despite the signings, they're not draftable as a No. 3 DST.
News: Like their offensive teammates, the Falcons defense and special teams weren't so hot in 2007. In total, they had 25 sacks, 18 fumble recoveries, 16 interceptions and one defensive touchdown (none on special teams). Despite flaunting talented players like John Abraham, Keith Brooking, DeAngelo Hall and Lawyer Milloy, the Falcons ranked 26th against the run and 23rd against the pass while giving up 39 touchdowns. The Falcons DST ranked dead last in standard-scoring leagues.
Analysis: Expect this DST to be an unreliable Fantasy option again in 2008 unless the right defensive coordinator gets into camp and shapes this unit into one that can halt opposing offenses. For now, they're not draftable as a No. 3 DST.
News: The Falcons DST had one interception, two fumble recoveries and four sacks Sunday in the season finale against Seattle.
Analysis: The Falcons DST will need plenty of work heading into 2008. Don't plan on drafting the unit next year unless there are wholesale changes.
News: The Falcons DST allowed 30 points and 361 yards in Atlanta's 30-27 overtime loss to the Cardinals in Week 16, and did not force a turnover or make a sack.
Analysis: The Falcons are one of the worst teams in the NFL and their DST unit is one of the worst in the Fantasy world. If you even consider starting them in Week 17 against the Seahawks, you need help.
News: The Falcons allowed 37 points and 285 yards of offense in Week 15 at Tampa Bay. They recorded one interception in the game and had two sacks.
Analysis: At this time, using the Falcons defense in Fantasy play is asking for trouble. Considering the sad state of affairs the team is in, and their matchup against a decent Arizona offense in Week 16, leave the Falcons on the waiver wire in all leagues.
News: The Falcons defense couldn't withstand the forward momentum of the Saints in Week 14 at Atlanta. It allowed 34 points on 473 yards, recording neither a sack nor an interception. It did recover a fumble, however. The Falcons special teams, meanwhile, picked up 79 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. If you start it in Fantasy, you hopefully play in a 32-team league. If you play in a standard 10- or 12-team league, leave it on waivers for Week 15 at Tampa Bay.
News: The Falcons DST got two interceptions and a sack in Atlanta's 28-16 loss to the Rams in Week 13, but allowed 409 yards to St. Louis.
Analysis: Not a great day for the Falcons DST, but they aren't exactly a great defensive unit and should not be starting against the Saints in Week 14.
News: The Falcons defense gave a valiant effort against the Colts in Week 12, shutting down their explosive offense for one quarter of play. In the end, though, the Colts still put 31 points up at Atlanta, picking up 365 total yards. The Falcons defense had four sacks and an interception while their special teams had 158 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is one of the worst in Fantasy, and it only got worse with the loss of DTs Rod Coleman and Trey Lewis earlier this week. Keep the Falcons DST on waivers for Week 13 at St. Louis.
News: The Falcons placed defensive tackles Rod Coleman and Trey Lewis on injured reserve on Tuesday, ending their seasons. The club also signed free agent defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona, activated defensive end Kevin Huntley from the practice squad and signed defensive end Derrick Jones to the practice squad.
Analysis: The re-shuffling of their defensive interior is not going to help their defense at all. Bet they wish they still had Grady Jackson. The Falcons DST is not worth starting in any Fantasy league as they host the Colts in Week 12 on Thanksgiving, and none of the above players mentioned are worth a look in IDP leagues, either.
News: The Falcons defense didn't have a model game against the Buccaneers in Week 11. It allowed 31 points on 305 yards, recording a sack and picking up a fumble. The Falcons special teams, meanwhile, had 118 total yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST entered the game ranked 15th in total defense, but it has a pathetic 16 sacks now on the season. We don't recommend starting it in Fantasy in Week 11 -- particularly since the Falcons host the Colts on Thanksgiving Day.
News: The Falcons DST will host QB Jeff Garcia and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in Week 11. The Bucs have the 21st-ranked offense in the NFL, and the offensive line has allowed just 15 sacks. The heart of this offense is Garcia, however.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is ranked 15th in total defense, but they have recorded just 13 sacks, which is among the bottom six teams in the league. We don't recommend starting this DST unit this week.
News: The Falcons allowed 13 points and 235 yards of total offense in Week 10 at Carolina. They forced two turnovers -- an interception and a fumble -- and had two sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons have posted back-to-back solid games against two very poor offenses. The Panthers had to start a hobbled Vinny Testaverde in Week 10. In Week 11, the sledding will get a little tougher against Tampa Bay. Leave them on the waiver wire.
News: The Falcons allowed just 16 points and 251 yards of offense in Week 9 vs. San Francisco. They forced three interceptions and had two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons made the most of their favorable matchup and Fantasy owners who took a big risk were rewarded with a decent output. In Week 10 at Carolina, they'll be in a similar situation.
News: Atlanta hosts San Francisco in Week 9 on Sunday. The former division foes have bad offenses that are only outmatched by similarly bad defenses.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is ranked 23rd in total defense, and we don't suggest starting them in most Fantasy leagues, despite the matchup against the 32nd-ranked Niners offense.
News: The Falcons DST ranks 24th in total defense (19th against the pass and 22nd against the run), but they are on a bye in Week 8.
Analysis: Atlanta will face San Francisco's anemic offense in Week 9, and that might be the only time we say give the Falcons DST a try.
News: The Falcons held the hosting Saints to 22 points on 310 yards in Week 7. They had one interception and no sacks. Their special teams gained 75 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST has been one of the worst in Fantasy and only deserves a look in the deepest of leagues. The Falcons have a bye in Week 8 before hosting the 49ers in Week 9.
News: The Giants racked up 31 points on 491 yards Week 6 at Atlanta. On defense, the Falcons did force three turnovers -- two interceptions and fumble -- but registered only one sack. Their special teams gained 112 yards, and they visit the Saints in Week 7.
Analysis: And that's why you don't start the Falcons DST in Fantasy.
News: The Falcons DST will face the Giants' 16th-ranked offense on Monday night of Week 6. The Giants are 16th in the passing game and 13th on the run. They have allowed six sacks and six interceptions.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is ranked 15th in total defense, but they have just eight sacks and four interceptions. We don't recommend starting them in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Falcons defense limited the Titans to 16 points on 249 yards at Tennessee in Week 5. It also recovered two fumbles and intercepted three passes. The Falcons special teams had 144 return yards.
Analysis: Despite the great performance Sunday, the Falcons DST has been painfully average this season. Keep it on the waiver wire for Week 6 against a good Giants offense.
News: Yahoo Sports reports that citing several sources Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall has asked for a trade from the Falcons, but the club won't comply yet. Hall spouted off to coach Bobby Petrino during the Falcons' Week 3 game after being penalized on the field. "He's going to play out the season and see what happens," said a source. "He's not happy, but he'll calm down and see how things are ... I would expect some teams will be asking about him, but the Falcons said they won't trade him."
Analysis: The Falcons allowed 398 yards in Week 4 against the Texans and recorded one sack and recovered two fumbles, limiting the Texans to 16 points. It was a so-so performance, really. It remains a lower-end Fantasy option, so keep it on waivers for Week 5 at the Titans.
News: The Falcons allowed 398 yards in Week 4 against the Texans. They also recorded one sack and recovered two fumbles, limiting the Texans to 16 points. Their special teams gained 86 yards.
Analysis: The Falcons DST only had a so-so performance, really. It remains a lower-end Fantasy option, so keep it on waivers for Week 5 at the Titans.
News: In another distraction for the Falcons, Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall said Wednesday he's been fined $100,000 and may be suspended for at least a quarter of the next game for his meltdown last week against the Panthers. Hall wasn't pleased with the decision and plans to appeal through the NFL Players Association. The Falcons acted quickly after their defensive star was called for three penalties totaling 67 yards on one possession, including two personal fouls, then got into a heated sideline confrontation with coach Bobby Petrino and an assistant. Asked if he thought the punishment was fair, Hall said, "I don't think so. They think so, but I don't think so. My agent is working on it with the union and hopefully we can get something worked out."
Analysis: With or without Hall, the Falcons DST isn't a strong Fantasy option to begin with. The Falcons allowed only 313 yards in Week 3 against the Panthers, holding star WR Steve Smith to 16 total yards. They also recorded three sacks. They'll face an injury-depleted Texans team at home in Week 4, making them a low-end bye-week replacement DST for those owners who have been relying on the Jaguars or Redskins through the first few weeks of the Fantasy season.
News: DeAngelo Hall faces "substantial discipline" that may include a suspension following his meltdown on the field and on the sideline against Carolina, according to coach Bobby Petrino. Hall's loss of composure on the field helped lead to the Falcons' third straight loss vs. Carolina in Week 3. His tirade on the sideline could cost him a fine or a suspension. "We certainly don't like the actions that took place on the field and do not like the actions that happened on the sideline and that's something that we'll deal with," Petrino said. "There will be substantial discipline. It will be handled in-house."
Analysis: With or without Hall, the Falcons DST isn't a strong Fantasy option to begin with. The Falcons allowed only 313 yards in Week 3 against the Panthers, holding star WR Steve Smith to 16 total. They also recorded three sacks. They'll face an injury-depleted Texans team at home in Week 4, making them a low-end bye-week replacement DST for those owners who have been relying on the Jaguars or Redskins through the first few weeks of the Fantasy season.
News: The Falcons allowed only 313 yards in Week 3 against the Panthers, holding star WR Steve Smith to 16 total. They also recorded three sacks, limiting the Panthers to 27 points. Their special teams gained 178 yards.
Analysis: OK, so the Falcons DST had one of its better performances. That doesn't mean you should go pick it up. It remains a lower-end Fantasy option, so keep it on waivers for Week 4 against the Texans.
News: The Falcons defense held the Jaguars to 13 points and recorded four sacks in a Week 2 13-7 loss. The Jaguars tallied 364 yards against it.
Analysis: The yardage allowed doesn't impress, but the sacks and points allowed do. Still, the Falcons have a middling defense at best for Fantasy play. Consider them only in deep leagues or extremely favorable matchups. Week 3 against the Panthers is not one of those matchups.
News: DB DeAngelo Hall recorded the Falcons only notable defensive stat in their 24-3 loss at Minnesota in Week 1. He intercepted a Tarvaris Jackson pass, diving for it off a deflection in the third quarter. Otherwise, Lawyer Milloy led the team with five solo tackles.
Analysis: The Falcons DST didn't do anything to raise eyebrows against a weak Vikings offense in Week 1. Don't expect anything more from them at Jacksonville in Week 2. Hall and Milloy will have their share of interceptions and should remain starting in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: The Falcons and first-round pick DE Jamaal Anderson agreed to a five-year contract with over $15 million guaranteed, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Anderson should end up starting at defensive end opposite John Abraham on the defensive line for the Falcons. Atlanta also signed rookie CBs Chris Houston, David Irons and rookie DT Trey Lewis.
Analysis: Anderson will see a lot of playing time, but some folks are concerned that he doesn't have the bulk to bowl over top offensive linemen. He's sort of in the Dwight Freeney mold in that his game is reliant on him using speed and technique to get to the quarterback. He will help generate sacks for the Falcons, but they are still a No. 2 Fantasy DST at best.
News: Atlanta Falcons cornerback Jimmy Williams is facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. State police charged the Hampton, Va. native on June 2, according to Goochland County General District Court records. An initial court appearance scheduled for July 16 was postponed until Dec. 3. The incident was first reported by television station WGCL in Atlanta. The station reported that Williams said he is innocent and that Falcons president Rich McKay and coach Bob Petrino had a copy of the police report and were discussing the matter Monday.
Analysis: Williams' Arizona-based agent, Ethan Lock said Monday night he had talked to his client about the matter. He declined further comment. The case is another distraction for the Falcons, who are dealing with star quarterback Michael Vick's federal indictment on dogfighting conspiracy charges. Vick and Williams, 23, are former Virginia Tech standouts. Williams' addition is nice for the Falcons DST, as long as he does have to suffer some sort of a suspension. Consider the Falcons a No. 2 defense in 2007.
News: The Falcons signed free-agent linebacker Orlando Huff to provide depth at outside linebacker and play on special teams. The 6-foot-3, 263-pound Huff started 13 games for the Cardinals in 2006, making 79 tackles. The six-year veteran has three sacks and two interceptions in 48 career starts with the Cardinals and Seattle. Huff also gives Atlanta an experienced option at weakside linebacker as Demorrio Williams recovers from offseason surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. The Falcons also signed former Georgia Tech tight end George Cooper, who was released by Detroit after being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent.
Analysis: Huff provides nice depth for the Falcons LB corps, but his presence won't help their DST, which is at best a No. 2 unit for 2007.
News: With the eighth pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Falcons selected Arkansas DE Jamaal Anderson (no relation to former Falcons RB Jamal Anderson). The former Razorback is expected to replace Patrick Kerney in the starting lineup. Anderson is considered a speed rusher and an athletic prospect (he used to play WR in high school!). "We felt like going into the draft, defensive end was at the top of our need list based on the loss of Patrick Kerney and Jamal was a guy we liked very much from his play on the field," said Falcons GM Rich McKay. "He is one of those guys whose measurables match up with his production. He is a 6-5, 288-pound guy who ran real fast, tested real well and also played real well -- that's a good combination." ... In other Falcons news, LB Demorrio Williams underwent surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle that could keep the three-year veteran sidelined as long as five months.
Analysis: The Williams injury will hurt the Falcons run defense. As for Anderson, he will see a lot of playing time, but some folks are concerned that he doesn't have the bulk to bowl over top offensive linemen. He's sort of in the Dwight Freeney mold in that his game is reliant on him using speed and technique to get to the quarterback. He will help generate sacks for the Falcons, but they are still a No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Falcons coach Bobby Petrino is planning to move Jimmy Williams to the No. 2 CB spot opposite DeAngelo Hall, which opens the door for the team to draft a safety. That doesn't bode well for CB Jason Webster. The club will also likely move Chauncey Davis to DE to replace Patrick Kerney.
Analysis: Defensively, the Falcons lost a lot of veterans this offseason, namely Patrick Kerney. Their defensive line and secondary have plenty of issues, and they're likely going to be working towards the future in 2007. Expect the Falcons DST to be a reserve unit all year in Fantasy play.
News: The Falcons have released veteran LBs Edgerton Hartwell and Ike Reese. Hartwell only made it into 13 games over the last two years as he's been hampered with knee injuries. Reese was moved to special teams and totaled 10 solo tackles.
Analysis: The Falcons needed to purge these once-solid players considering the cap room they were taking up. Atlanta's defense is still far from being considered great -- especially in the wake of likely losing DE Patrick Kerney. Consider them a reserve DST in 2007.
News: As reported earlier last week, Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney opted out of the final two years of his contract to explore his options as an unrestricted free agent, the team confirmed. Even though he is coming off an injury, Kerney may top the field of free-agent defensive ends. Three other top defensive ends have been designated by their teams as franchise players, so the market for a quality DE is soft. In nine games last year, Kerney had 16 tackles (14 solo) with 4.5 sacks, two passes defensed and two forced fumbles.
Analysis: Losing Kerney would definitely hurt Atlanta's defensive unit since he generates a lot of QB pressures and sacks. But even if they do lose him, their DST is not expected to be drafted in standard Fantasy leagues anyway.
News: NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Falcons DE Patrick Kerney is planning to void the final two years on his contract the day after players can be tagged, making him an unrestricted free agent on March 2. The Falcons are trying to keep Kerney in town, and Kerney has expressed an interest in staying, but with so many teams out there looking for an impact defensive end, Kerney will be in demand.
News: The Atlanta Falcons declared TE Daniel Fells, DL Tommy Jackson, WR Ashley Lelie, FB Corey McIntyre, OT Frank Omiyale, FS J.R. Reed, RB Jamal Robertson and 3QB D.J. Shockley inactive for Week 17 at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Lelie might be worth Fantasy consideration late on Draft Day in 2007, but none of the other players are worth a look in any leagues.
News: The Falcons DST had three sacks and nothing else in a 10-3 loss against Carolina. DB Lawyer Milloy had eight tackles and a sack. DL Rod Coleman had four tackles and a sack. LB Michael Boley had five tackles and a sack. LB Ed Hartwell had 12 tackles. LB Keith Brooking had nine tackles. DB DeAngelo Hall had three tackles.
Analysis: Keep the Falcons reserved for Week 17 against the Eagles but use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Falcons defense gave up 38 points and 352 yards in a Week 15 loss to the Cowboys. Rod Coleman had two sacks and Demorrio Williams chipped in with his first sack of the season. Michael Boley had the team's lone interception.
Analysis: Consider the Falcons DST a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 16 vs. Carolina. Boley is a pretty solid Fantasy LB, whereas Coleman and Williams are low-end Fantasy options.
News: The Falcons defense were able to keep the Bucs out of the end zone in Week 14, giving up just two field goals and 272 total yards. The Falcons could not force any turnovers, but they did get a sack from DL John Abraham. Falcons LB Keith Brooking led all tacklers with 17.
Analysis: The Falcons will have a much tougher task ahead in Week 15 against the Cowboys and should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy DST. Abraham and Brooking are both solid Fantasy options in IDP leagues.
News: The Falcons yielded 381 yards and just 14 points in a Week 13 win over the Redskins. DB Chris Crocker and DL Chauncey Davis had interceptions in the game, while Paul Carrington had a sack.
Analysis: Consider the Falcons DST a one-week sleeper against Tampa Bay in Week 14. None of the Falcons defensive stars of Week 13 should be used in IDP play.
News: The Falcons defense allowed 31 points, putting up two sacks but nothing else vs. New Orleans in Week 12.
Analysis: The Falcons defense shouldn't be used in Fantasy play, even at Washington in Week 13.
News: Falcons DE John Abraham has been upgraded to probable and is expected to play vs. New Orleans in Week 12. Moreover, DT Jonathan Babineaux and DT Grady Jackson have been removed from the injury report and are also expected to play.
Analysis: The Falcons' D-line should be as healthy as it's been all season. Consider the Falcons defense a shaky unit against the Saints considering how many points and yards New Orleans has been putting up lately.
News: The Falcons allowed 24 points and 411 net yard of offense in Week 11 at Baltimore. They also forced a fumble and picked up two sacks.
Analysis: The Falcons have fallen off after a hot start this season defensively. Consider them a decent start in leagues of 12-plus teams for Week 12 vs. New Orleans.
News: The injury-plagued Atlanta Falcons signed safety Lance Schulters and cornerback Derrick Johnson on Tuesday.
Analysis: Johnson, a sixth-round pick by San Francisco in 2005, has five career starts. He was released by the 49ers before the start of this season and played briefly with Houston before being let go again. These two signings have no effect on the Fantasy value of the Falcons.
News: The Falcons announced Monday night that DE Patrick Kerney will have season-ending surgery on his pectoral muscle. Kerney injured his chest in the first half vs. Cleveland in Week 10.
Analysis: This will definitely impact the Falcons as one of their defensive leaders is gone. Continue to view them as a low-end Fantasy option as a DST. The Falcons play at Baltimore in Week 11, and not at a good time either as the Ravens offense hits its stride.
News: The Falcons lost another starter on defense. Patrick Kerney will likely be out an "extended" period after hurt his chest in a loss to the Browns. Kerney, who has started 105 games in a row, was undergoing an MRI exam Monday to determine the extent of damage to his right pectoral muscle. His loss is another blow to a defensive line that's had the other end, three-time Pro Bowler John Abraham, for only two games this season.
Analysis: Kerney leads the team with five sacks. His injury means the Falcons will likely start rookie Paul Carrington, an undrafted free agent, in this Sunday's game at Baltimore. Atlanta faces the Ravens as they're hitting a hot streak; don't use them if you can help it in Fantasy play.
News: Despite being decimated by injuries, the Falcons defense held the Browns to 236 yards and sacked QB Charlie Fyre five times in Week 10. The sacks went to DL Paul Carrington, LB Michael Boley, DL Rod Coleman, DL T.J. Jackson and DL Josh Mallard. The defense also recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Falcons were already playing without John Abraham, Ed Hartwell and Jason Webtser, but they lost Patrick Kerney during the game and his status for Week 11 is up in the air. The unpredictable Falcons defense did a stellar job against the Browns in Week 11, but they will have a tougher challenge ahead in the Ravens. Consider the Falcons DST a low-end No. 2 option for Week 11. Of the five guys that had sacks, Boley is the only player that should be used in IDP leagues.
News: Falcons cornerback Jason Webster has a torn groin muscle that is expected to keep him out for at least a month, further depleting Atlanta's defensive backfield. "He got an MRI last night and it showed up," coach Jim Mora said Thursday. "Right now we are struggling at one spot, the secondary. Maybe we can get some guys to rally and move on." Webster, who starts on the right side, was injured in practice on Wednesday, and the Falcons will be short in the secondary when they host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Rookie cornerback Jimmy Williams, whom Mora tentatively named as Webster's replacement, took one snap on special teams Thursday before rolling his ankle and hobbling off the field. Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall missed practice because of a strained hamstring.
Analysis: The Falcons defense has had plenty of trouble stopping offenses before Webster's injury, now it probably will only get worse. It would seem the Falcons have a favorable matchup against the Browns in Week 10, but with another key loss on defense, you are taking a huge risk playing the Falcons DST.
News: The Falcons DST got three sacks and an interception against Detroit. LB Keith Brooking had nine tackles and a sack. DB Lawyer Milloy had nine tackles and a sack. DB Jason Webster had 10 tackles. DL Jonathan Babineaux had an interception. DL Josh Mallard had one tackle and a sack. And DB DeAngelo Hall had three tackles.
Analysis: Look for the Falcons to have a good game in Week 10 against Cleveland. All their usual IDP players are recommended starts.
News: Falcons DB Kevin Mathis was taken off the field on a cart after being injured on the opening kickoff against Detroit. Mathis hurt his neck but appeared to move his arms and legs.
Analysis: It is unlikely Mathis will return to the game. This will hurt the Falcons DST and special teams units against the Lions.
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Falcons LB Edgerton Hartwell (knees) will be a gametime decision for Week 9 at Detroit. He played in Week 8 but did not practice Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Analysis: Atlanta's defense has played well without him at points this season. Don't expect him to make an impact either way. Atlanta's defense is at best a bye-week option in Week 9.
News: The Falcons DST recovered a fumble and had two sacks against Cincinnati. LB Michael Boley recovered a fumble, DL Patrick Kerney had two tackles and a sack and forced a fumble, LB Keith Brooking had nine tackles and DB Chris Crocker had two tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Falcons have a good matchup in Week 9 against Detroit. Consider the DST a No. 2 option and use all IDP players if needed.
News: Falcons DE John Abraham had surgery on his groin Tuesday and will miss the next 3-to-4 weeks. Abraham suffered the injury in Week 1 and had to leave last week's game against the Steelers early. "After rehabbing and working with our medical staff, it was our hope that John would be ready to play against Cincinnati," Falcons coach Jim Mora said. "Unfortunately, a second opinion conducted Monday afternoon confirmed that John will need minor surgery to help him get back to 100 percent."
Analysis: The Falcons defense played for a long time without him, but they are definitely better with him. Consider them a very low-end Fantasy defense; don't be afraid to cut them for a defense with a better matchup.
News: The Falcons defense totaled three sacks and two forced fumbles vs. Pittsburgh in Week 7. They did hold the Steelers rushing game to 55 yards in four-plus quarters (the game went into OT).
Analysis: Atlanta's defense should be benched when they play at Cincinnati in Week 8.
News: Notable inactives for Week 7's Falcons-Steelers game include: QB D.J. Shockley (emergency QB), S Cam Newton, TE Daniel Fells, DE John Abraham, DT Rod Coleman and LB John Leake. For Pittsburgh, QB Brian St. Pierre (emergency QB), WR/KR Willie Reid, RB Duce Staley, LB Joey Porter, LB James Harrison, DE Rodney Bailey are inactive.
Analysis: None of these players should be in your active lineup for Week 7.
News: Demorrio Williams leads the Falcons with 32 tackles and 25 solo stops, according to statistics posted on NFL.com, but the third-year linebacker lost his starting job on Wednesday. Head coach Jim Mora confirmed that Ed Hartwell, whom Atlanta signed in March 2004 to a six-year contract that included $8 million in guarantees, will start at middle linebacker when the Steelers visit the Georgia Dome on Sunday. Arthroscopic surgery on both knees sidelined Hartwell after the third preseason game. Combined with a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Week 5 of 2005, Hartwell has played in just five of the Falcons' last 21 games. Hartwell's return means that Keith Brooking, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who started at middle linebacker, moves back to the weak side.
Analysis: The Falcons defense is coming off one of their worst performances of the year against the Giants, and while the return of Hartwell will help, they are facing a very potent offense in the Steelers in Week 7. Not to mention that the Falcons starting D-Line are battling a slew of injuries. The Falcons DST should be viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy option. As far as IDP leagues are concerned, Williams was developing into a nice option, but now that he is back on the bench, he shouldn't be a part of your roster. Hartwell is a viable Fantasy option when healthy.
News: Falcons DL Rod Coleman (toe), DL John Abraham (groin) are listed as questionable, while DL Patrick Kerney (hamstring) and DL Grady Jackson (knee) are listed as probable for Week 7 vs. Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Abraham and Kerney are viable Fantasy IDP options when healthy. It is a better chance at this point that Kerney plays over Abraham, who returned to action in Week 6 but didn't play in the fourth quarter after his groin tightened up. Falcons DST owners need to be concerned with the health of the Falcons D-Line seeing how in Week 7 they face the Steelers, a team that likes to run the football. Monitor the situation before settling on the Falcons DST in Week 7.
News: DL John Abraham returned to Atlanta's defensive line after missing three games with a groin injury. He dominated early, but wasn't on the field in the fourth quarter after the injury tightened up. Two other linemen, Patrick Kerney and Rod Coleman, also went out with injuries late in the game.
Analysis: The Falcons defense had their worst game of the season Sunday against the Giants and will need Abraham, Kerney and Coleman healthy. Continue to monitor their status before using them in IDP leagues.
News: After holding the Giants to just four passing yards in the first quarter in Week 6, the Falcons were outscored 24-7 in the second half en route to a loss. They allowed Tiki Barber to gain 227 yards of total offense and surrendered 424 yards of offense.
Analysis: The Falcons were picked apart by Barber and Eli Manning in the second half and were unable to live up to the great game they had in Week 4, prior to their bye. Consider this merely a hiccup and use them in leagues of 12-plus teams in Week 7 vs. Pittsburgh.
News: On Monday, when the Falcons (3-1) returned from their bye, LB Edgerton Hartwell (knees) was back at practice, saying "I feel good" and waiting to see how he fits into the team's plans for Sunday's home game against the Giants. The Falcons may not be eager to rush Hartwell back. Five-time Pro Bowl pick Keith Brooking has played the first four games in the middle. The young starting outside linebackers -- Michael Boley and Demorrio Williams -- have been so productive it may be difficult for coaches to move either to a backup role. "It's good to have him back out there working on the field in practices," defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said. "He's getting reps. We want to weave him back into the lineup. Everyday he'll get work and hopefully he'll play Sunday."
Analysis: Hartwell would certainly help provide depth for the Falcons defense, but based on the play of Boley and Williams, Hartwell's return wouldn't boost the team's Fantasy value. They remain a fair option vs. the Giants' potent offense in Week 6.
News: The Falcons scored a defensive TD in Week 4 vs. Arizona when DeAngelo Hall returned an interception 37 yards for a score. They limited the Cardinals to 10 yards and only 187 yards of total offense. They forced four turnovers on the day and notched four sacks in the game, three by Patrick Kerney. Michael Boley had seven tackles, including a sack and he also had an interception.
Analysis: The Falcons may have won the week for Fantasy owners everywhere. Unfortunately, those same owners will have to look elsewhere for a defense in Week 5 as the Falcons are on a bye. If at all possible, keep them reserved. You'll find it hard to claim them off the waiver wire if you cut them.

News: Because the Falcons didn't face Steve Smith in Week 1, Arizona presents them with the first challenge of worrying as much about the receivers as they do with a premier running back. This time, however, Atlanta is far from full strength. CB DeAngelo Hall is nursing a sore left calf, and the secondary lacks the consistent pressure it had at Carolina with DE Patrick Kerney playing hurt and DE John Abraham uncertain for the third straight week. Traditionally stationary quarterbacks like Kurt Warner often play right into the considerable skills of DL Rod Coleman, whose 40.5 sacks since the start of 2002 are 13.5 more than Kevin Williams, the NFL's second-most productive interior tackle.
Analysis: If Hall, Kerney and Abraham all are healthy enough to play against the Cardinals, then you should consider starting the Falcons DST in Week 4. Otherwise, Warner could have a comfortable day in the pocket not worrying too much about the pash rush and picking apart the Falcons defense. With all the hoopla surrounding Warner's starting status out in Arizona, he will be in need of a big game makimg him a dangerous player to go against. Take these factors into consideration when deciding to play the Falcons DST.
News: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that both DE John Abraham (groin) and LB Edgerton Hartwell (knees) are closer to returning this week, according to coach Jim Mora. If both practice and hold up well, they could be active for Week 4 vs. Arizona.
Analysis: Both of those players would give the Falcons a much-needed boost defensively, especially since they're playing on a short week. However, considering the opponent, using the Falcons defense for Fantasy play could be rough since Arizona has the personnel to put up some points. For owners in IDP leagues, Abraham and Hartwell would both be advisable starts if they're healthy.
News: The Falcons allowed 23 points and 326 total net yards in Week 3 at New Orleans. They also had just one sack, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries in the loss.
Analysis: In other news, DB DeAngelo Hall was forced to leave in the first quarter due to a calf injury, but he was able to return. That is good news for Fantasy owners, as the Falcons look to rebound in Week 4 against the Cardinals.
News: CB DeAngelo Hall left Monday's game at New Orleans in the first quarter due to a strained left calf injury. Allen Rossum has replaced him in the secondary.
Analysis: Hall, who was also expected to see time on offense, is now questionable to return to the game. We'll monitor his status and let you know if he gets back on the field or not.

Falcons D on the mend
News: Falcons coach Jim Mora listed LB Edgerton Hartwell (knees) and DE John Abraham (groin) as questionable for Week 3 at New Orleans, adding DB Kevin Mathis (knee) and Patrick Kerney (triceps) as probable. Mora was optimistic all four players would practice and thus play in the game.
Analysis: Hartwell and Abraham's presence would only help the Falcons defense, who looked great in Week 2 without them. They should be considered a low-end option or a good bye-week replacement unit for Week 3 Fantasy play -- they will be playing against a crafty Saints offense.

Falcons D reloading
News: MLB Ed Hartwell could practice for the first time since the week of the third preseason game. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees after Atlanta's exhibition win at Tennessee. Elsewhere, Falcons DE John Abraham, who missed the Bucs game with a strained groin, told DeAngelo Hall that he intends to return this week and practice for the Monday night game at New Orleans. After Abraham's dominant performance in the opener at Carolina, the NFC named him defensive player of the week. "Abraham's already chomping at the bit to get in on Monday night," Hall said. "He's saying that he's going to be there. That's definitely going to be a game-changer."
Analysis: Hartwell and Abraham's presence would only help the Falcons defense, who looked great in Week 2 without them. They should be considered a low-end option or a good bye-week replacement unit for Week 3 Fantasy play.

Falcons D crushes Bucs
News: The Falcons defense hammered the Bucs, limiting them to three points while intercepting Chris Simms three times (two by DeAngelo Hall), sacking him once. They played without John Abraham and Edgerton Hartwell.
Analysis: The Falcons defense will have their hands full with the Saints in Week 3 in New Orleans, but they've shown enough grit this season to prove that they're startable when the matchup is right. They are good to go as a bye-week replacement for your regular defense in Week 3.

Falcons without Hartwell, Abraham
News: The Falcons have listed the following notable players inactive for Week 2: QB D.J. Shockley (emergency QB), WR Kevin Youngblood, FS Cam Newton, LB Edgerton Hartwell, DE John Abraham and TE Daniel Fells. DE Patrick Kerney is active.
Analysis: Both Hartwell and Abraham will be missed. Look for the Falcons defense to be in some trouble without those studs on staff. Consider benching the Atlanta defense for Week 2.

Falcons' Abrham ruled out
News: John Abraham (groin) was ruled out for Week 2 vs. Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Not good news for the Falcons or IDP owners. Abraham is always a solid start when healthy. He may not even be ready for Week 3, so keep him reserved until further notice. With the Falcons playing a team that scored no points in Week 1, they remain a good start.
9/11/2006

ATL to miss Abraham, Kerney?
News: Falcons coach Jim Mora was tightlipped about the status of ends John Abraham (groin) and Patrick Kerney (arm) -- with four Pro Bowls between them -- heading into Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. "I've got nothing on Pat and John," Mora said tersely at his Monday briefing. "It's too early to answer who will play there." Kerney said he felt better on Monday, but Abraham had an MRI on Monday on the sore groin.
Analysis: If both Abraham and Kerney play, the Falcons defense should start for Fantasy owners vs. the Buccaneers in Week 2. Tampa Bay could be playing without two of their offensive guards like they did in Week 1, and that would mean lots of pressure on Chris Simms. Keep tabs on this one during the week.

Strong start for Falcons DST
News: The Atlanta DST held the Panthers to 6 points. LB Keith Brooking had six tackles, S Lawyer Milloy had five tackles, CB DeAngelo Hall had four tackles, DE John Abraham had two sacks and DB Jason Webster had an interception.
Analysis: The Falcons are a good option this week against Tampa Bay at home, especially since the Bucs were shutout in the first week.

Kerney leaves in Week 1
News: Atlanta defensive end Patrick Kerney left Sunday's game against Carolina with an arm injury. Kerney suffered a right triceps strain in the first quarter. His return was questionable.
Analysis: Kerney is a startable No. 1 Fantasy DL when healthy. Monitor his status throughout the game.

Don't start Falcons DST this week
News: The Falcons allowed 24 and 44 points to the Panthers in two games last season -- and this was before they added Keyshawn Johnson and DeAngelo Williams to their roster. Clearly, the Falcons didn't have an answer for Steve Smith in those games (196 yards, 2 TDs in two contests). Moreover, the Falcons' starting defense did not look spectacular during the preseason, and they will be without LB Ed Hartwell for Week 1.
Analysis: That should be enough evidence to sit the Falcons DST in Week 1. Find another unit off the waiver wire (the Cardinals, perhaps?) to fill the spot for the season opener.

Falcons lose LB Hartwell (knees)
News: Coming off a season in which he missed 11 games with an Achilles injury, Falcons LB Edgerton Hartwell will miss the next two to four weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees. Pain and stiffness have bothered the middle linebacker since Atlanta opened the preseason with a home victory over New England. The problems persisted when the Falcons won at Tennessee, and the decision for surgery was made. Jordan Beck, who was sidelined for his entire rookie season after tearing a ligament in his foot a year ago, is the likely replacement for Hartwell.
Analysis: The Falcons DST is a solid unit thanks to a good group of veterans, but their inability to stop the run this preseason has been the catalyst for their slide out of the top 12 Fantasy DSTs. Consider them a top-notch backup unit for now.

LB Falcons defense cut five
News: The Atlanta Falcons released CB Billy Alford, S Ryan Bowers, DT Brook Miller, S Chris Reis and LB Will Thompson on Sunday.
Analysis: These transactions should not impact the defense. Atlanta's DST is a top-notch Fantasy unit thanks to a solid array of veterans.

LB Brooking, DB Hall play Sat.
News: LB Keith Brooking (ankle) and DB DeAngelo Hall (ankle) was back in the lineup for Saturday's preseason game at Tennessee. Hall had two solo tackles and one assist and Brooking had five solo tackles, four assists and three passese defended.
Analysis: Atlanta's defense looks great on paper, but until they can corral the run, they should be considered at best a low-end DST for regular Fantasy use, worth a final-round pick.
8/24/2006
, ,
DT Jackson goes to Falcons
News: The Falcons have agreed to terms on a three-year contract with DT Grady Jackson, a free-agent defensive tackle who spent the last three years with the Green Bay Packers.
Analysis: Jackson will help them stop the run, which looks like a leak on the Falcons defense through the first two preseason games. Atlanta's defense looks great on paper, but until they can corral the run, they should be considered at best a low-end DST for regular Fantasy use, worth a final-round pick.

CB DeAngelo Hall rests ankle
News: Now that he must take a few days to rest minor sprains he suffered to his right ankle and knee at Green Bay, perhaps Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall can hold his emotions in check. It's unlikely the Falcons could survive long without Hall, one of the league's fastest players, an amazing athlete who has every tangible skill necessary to hold down his side of the field and offer substantial run support.
Analysis: The sight of Hall holding his left wrist following his scraps with Adam Jennings and Alge Crumpler is a lesson he should not repeat. Suffering the minor injuries at Green Bay will likely give Hall most of this week off, and he probably won't play at Tennessee, particularly considering that he punched a Titans receiver in an exhibition game last year and was immediately ejected. Consider the Falcons DST a decent backup unit in Fantasy play.
News: AtlantaFalcons.com is reporting CB DeAngelo Hall was forced out of Saturday's preseason game at Green Bay due to a sprained right ankle.
Analysis: We'll check back in on Hall when further details are made known on the severity of his injury. It didn't sound too serious, but we'll see. The Falcons should be a fairly strong defensive unit in most Fantasy leagues in 2006 and a healthy Hall is extremely helpful.

News: DeAngelo Hall (hamstring) was able to play in Friday's preseason game against the Patriots. He made two solo tackles and assisted on one other.

Atlanta drafts CB Jimmy Williams
News: The Atlanta Falcons drafted Virginia Tech CB Jimmy Williams with the No. 37 overall selection (Round 2) in the 2006 NFL Draft. He joins fellow Hokie alum CB DeAngelo Hall in the defensive backfield.
Analysis: Williams won't make an immediate impact as a rookie for owners in IDP formats, but his presence makes the Falcons defense that much more attractive next season.

Edgerton Hartwell not 100 percent
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports LB Ed Hartwell (Achilles') is "75-80 percent." He missed most of last season due to the ailment.

Atlanta acquires John Abraham
News: The New York Jets have traded John Abraham to the Atlanta Falcons in a three-team deal. The Falcons will send a first-round pick (No. 15) to the Denver Broncos in exchange for their first-round pick (No. 29 overall), a 2006 third-rounder, and a 2007 fourth-round pick. The Falcons then sent the 29th overall pick to the Jets for Abraham.
Analysis: Abraham, who recorded 58 total tackles and 10.5 sacks last season, will make a serious impact if he can avoid injuries. With Rod Coleman and Patrick Kerney also in the mix, the Falcons DST should be much improved next season.

Falcons acquire FS Crocker
News: According to the News-Herald of Northeast Ohio, the Browns have traded free safety Chris Crocker to the Falcons in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice. Crocker finished 2005 with 81 total tackles (50 solo), two sacks, two interceptions and two pass deflections.
Analysis: Crocker could settle in to a starting spot next to Lawyer Milloy in the Falcons' defensive backfield. Atlanta's defense was a mess late in 2005 but has a nice start towards being upgraded in 2006.

Atlanta's D strong
News: After a couple of poor outings, the Falcons DST came up strong in their 27-7 win at Detroit in Week 12. They registered six sacks, two interceptions three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Falcons D banged up
News: With MLB Ed Hartwell out for the season and RDE Brady Smith about to miss his fifth game, the starting front seven consists of two rookies (SLB Michael Boley and Smith's replacement, swingman Jonathan Babineaux) and two second-year veterans who became full-time starters during the offseason (WLB Demorrio Williams and NT Chad Lavalais). LCB DeAngelo Hall, who turned 22 last weekend, is the youngest player on the roster. Rookie end Chauncey Davis started two games earlier this year when Smith had a strained quadriceps. Another rookie, interior tackle Darrell Shropshire, was inactive for the first six weeks but has become a mainstay in the rotation. "We have a lot of young guys, and as we are trying to build this organization, this team ... for many years, not just one year," head coach Jim Mora said. "In order to do that, you sometimes have to make tough decisions, like moving past a Travis Hall or moving past 'Fish' (Ed Jasper) and bringing young talent in. So, experience wise, you are taking a step back. Skill-wise, in the long run, you are taking a couple of big steps forward."
Analysis: This is why Atlanta's defense has been roughed up in recent weeks. The Lions will be fully prepared to play well on Thanksgiving Day, so give the Falcons DST a rest in Week 12.

Falcons focus on tackling
News: According to the Atlanta Ledger-Inquirer, the Falcons are troubled by the amount of yards they gave up to the Packers in Week 10. They missed several tackles in a 33-25 loss to Green Bay last weekend. "They had an astounding number of yards after contact," said safety Bryan Scott. "We pride ourselves on being an aggressive unit. We like to see runners going backward, not forward."
Analysis: The Falcons are still a nice option vs. Tampa Bay in Week 11.

LB Ulmer, S Antuan Edwards sign
News: The Falcons picked up LB Artie Ulmer and S Edwards on Tuesday. "With any new team, there's always different terminology, but I could fit right into this scheme because I spent so much time in Green Bay with Ed Donatell," Edwards said of Atlanta's second-year defensive coordinator. "This should be a good arrangement, not just for me, but for the Falcons, too."
Analysis: Ulmer will work on special teams for the most part, with Edwards helping as a reserve in the secondary initially, but he could climb the depth chart because of his familiarity with this system.
News: Atlanta's DST unit scored two touchdowns, had two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery at New Orleans in Week 6. The Falcons scored on a DeAngelo Hall fumble return and on a Demorrio Williams blocked field goal return.
Analysis: Atlanta's defense should come up big again vs. the New York Jets in Week 7.

DE Kerney questionable for Falcons
News: Patrick Kerney (abdomen) is listed as questionable for Week 6 at New Orleans. He was unable to participate in team practice Wednesday. Chauncey Davis would probably start if Kerney can't go.
Analysis: Kerney is a solid start in IDP leagues when healthy. The Falcons DST unit has been up-and-down this year and their recent switches at LB are significant. But they are still a solid start in Fantasy leagues this week against the Saints.

Falcons defenders go under knife
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Edgerton Hartwell had surgery to repair his torn right Achilles' tendon Monday morning. DB Chris Cash also underwent surgery to repair two broken bones in his right forearm. Both were placed on injured reserve.
Analysis: The Falcons DST will see a few changes this week, due to these injuries. Either OLD Keith Brooking or OLB Ike Reese will move into Hartwell's spot inside, both have played the position before. "I'm completely comfortable with whatever they decide is best for our football team," Brooking said. "We have a lack of depth there, so we need to get our best players on the football field." Demorrio Williams could replace Brooking at WLB or Michael Boley would replace Reese at SLB. Allen Rossum would probably step in for Cash. No matter what changes are made, start this DST unit at New Orleans in Week 6.

LB Hartwell out for season
News: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Ed Hartwell is out for the season after suffering an Achilles' tendon injury that will require surgery. DB Chris Cash will also be out for the year after fracturing his lower right arm. Both are expected to go on injured reserve.
Analysis: Hartwell was the Falcons' main run-stopper on defense and Cash worked well as the team's nickel back. Allen Rossum replaced Cash and they will likely sign a linebacker for depth. Undrafted rookie John Leake is the only other true MLB on the roster. Ike Reese moved inside to replace Hartwell in Week 5 against New England. Keith Brooking might also move inside, which means rookie LB Michael Boley could see more playing time outside. DeMarrio Williams might play at the SLB again. Patrick Kerney strained a muscle on his left side, but was able to finish the game. Hartwell's absence could affect the Falcons DST greatly, but they remain a solid Fantasy start at New Orleans in Week 6.

News: The Atlanta defense allowed only 10 points and 261 total net yards in Week 4 against a shaky Daunte Culpepper and the Vikings. The Falcons were able to sack the Minnesota quarterback nine times, while recording two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
