News: The Vikings spent five of 10 draft picks on defense, including a first-round pick on Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith. In addition, the Vikings spent two picks on cornerbacks in Central Florida's Josh Robinson and Notre Dame's Robert Blanton along with two picks toward the front of the defense in N.C. State linebacker Audie Cole and Cal defensive end Trevor Guyton.
Analysis: Smith should start from Day 1 but Blanton has the size and versatility to possibly join him if he can put together a good camp. The Vikings have done a nice job with their secondary this season with Chris Carr and Zackary Bowman joining the defense and providing excellent depth that they might have used last season. The Vikings DST shouldn't get picked in Fantasy drafts but should be considered as a one-week replacement when faced with a good matchup during the season.
News: The Minnesota Vikings relieved Fred Pagac of his duties as defensive coordinator on Sunday, but offered to let him stay on as linebackers coach, according to the Pioneer Press. The move indicates that current LB coach Mike Singletary, who has interviewed for the coordinator job, will either receive a promotion or will be released by the organization. Pagac spent one season as the Vikings' defensive coordinator.
Analysis: After finishing among the top two teams in run defense from 2005-09, Minnesota dropped to 11th last season after permitting an average of 107 yards per game. The Vikings were often on the losing side of routs this past year and surrendered an average of 28.1 points a week -- second most in the league behind only Tampa Bay (30.9). Fantasy owners should consider Minnesota a No. 2 Fantasy DST for the 2012 campaign for now.
News: The Vikings DST pummeled backup QB Josh McCown and the Bears' beat-up offense in Week 17, limiting Chicago to 17 points on 209 yards. The low yardage was partially the result of negative plays as the Vikings racked up seven sacks on the day, including 3 1/2 by DL Jared Allen. The Vikings also had an interception and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Vikings DST was clearly at its best in Week 17 and likely secured a few championships for the Fantasy owners with enough guts to start it. Though the Vikings DST could stand to have a little more help from the offense, it has the potential to be a top-15 Fantasy unit entering 2012, especially given the play-making ability of Allen. If the Vikings can improve their secondary, they'll have a Fantasy-relevant defense, so keep an eye on their additions and subtractions this offseason.
News: The Vikings DST did what it had to do on Saturday of Week 16 to win at Washington. The Vikings DST held the Redskins to 397 yards in the game, and still managed to force just two turnovers. That said, the Vikings DST did pick up the unit's first interception in 10 games as Mistral Raymond intercepted a Rex Grossman pass. The Vikings DST finished with three sacks in the win.
Analysis: The Vikings DST still didn't put up the best effort in terms of Fantasy production on Saturday, though they were head and shoulders better than they have been. The Vikings DST is simply not a consistently solid unit. The interception was nice, but the distinction just proves the Vikings DST is not a unit worth starting Week 17 against the Bears.
News: The Vikings DST has not intercepted a pass since Week 5 against Arizona when they recorded three against the Cardinals. The Vikings DST heads into Week 16 at Washington having not intercepted a pass in nine straight games. The Vikings DST should be able to end that ugly streak Week 16 against Rex Grossman and the Redskins, however. Grossman has thrown an interception in six straight games and has nine total over that span. Grossman has thrown 18 interceptions on the season and he hasn't even started every game for Washington.
Analysis: While the Vikings DST gets Grossman Week 16, who should definitely help end that lengthy stretch of games without an interception, it likely won't make them a viable Fantasy option. The Redskins actually don't allow a big amount of Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units. Plus, interception or not, the Vikings DST has not been a great unit this season. Consider the Vikings DST a No. 2 Fantasy DST, at best, Week 16.
News: The Minnesota defense had a difficult time containing the New Orleans passing game and forced only two turnovers during the Vikings' 42-20 loss to the Saints in Week 15. New Orleans racked up 573 total yards of offense -- the most Minnesota has surrendered this season -- and scored a touchdown on five straight drives in the third and fourth quarters. The Vikings have now yielded 400-plus yards to an opponent four times this year.
Analysis: Minnesota was unable to effectively pressure Saints QB Drew Brees throughout the game and failed to register a sack for the first time this season. The Vikings' woeful streak without picking off a pass also reached nine games as Brees became the first player in NFL history to throw for more than 400 yards with five touchdowns and complete 80 percent of his passes with no interceptions in a game. Fantasy owners should view Minnesota as a No. 2 Fantasy DST against Washington in Week 16.
News: The Vikings DST heads into Week 15 against New Orleans on a bad streak. The Vikings DST has not recorded double figures in Fantasy points since Week 5 of the season against Arizona. To make matters worse, the Saints are allowing the fourth-fewest Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units on the season.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has allowed at least 21 points scored on them in all but one game this season. The unit has forced just three turnovers in the team's last four games and they have not intercepted a pass since that Week 5 game against the Cardinals. They are playing a team that scores points in bunches Week 15. The Vikings DST is not a recommended Fantasy option.
News: By the middle of the first quarter, the Vikings were already in a 21-0 hole, but despite strengthening as the game went on, the Vikings DST did too little too late in a Week 14 loss to the Lions. Though they allowed 280 yards of offense overall, the Vikings held the Lions to 129 yards and three points in the second half. While the defense allowed the Vikings a chance to get back in the game, they did not provide much for Fantasy owners. While they tied a season high in sacks with five, they did not force a single turnover in the game.
Analysis: If the Vikings played the entire game the way they played in the second half, it would have been a good week to start their DST. However, their overall output was disappointing, just as it has been for most of the season. With the high-powered Saints coming up in Week 15, there is still little reason to start the Vikings DST in any format.
News: The Lions are the NFL's fourth-highest scoring team, but the Vikings DST is catching the Detroit offense in the midst of a slump. With Jahvid Best (concussion) out for the year and Kevin Smith (ankle) possibly missing Week 14, the Vikings will face a depleted Lions rushing attack, plus Detroit has scored 17 points or fewer in three out of their last four games. However, the last time these two teams met, back in Week 3, the Lions rolled up 26 points en route to a victory.
Analysis: The Vikings have been one of the worst DSTs in Fantasy this season, but with the Lions' offense in a funk, they could be viable in deeper formats for the coming week. While the Vikings can normally be avoided in the vast majority of leagues, they can be used as a No. 2 DST in Week 14.
News: Against San Diego last week, Denver QB Tim Tebow had 22 rushing attempts to represent the most by a quarterback in any game since the merger in 1970. The Minnesota defense was determined to limit his effectiveness during the teams' Week 14 matchup. The Vikings held Tebow to only 13 rushing yards on four attempts, including only eight yards in the first half alone, however they still dropped a 35-32 decision on Sunday.
Analysis: Minnesota finished with few bright spots following its first-quarter safety as it created only two turnovers. The Vikings also yielded 336 total yards, including a season-high 202 passing yards by Tebow, during their fourth straight loss. It was the seventh consecutive outing Minnesota has allowed at least 300 total yards to an opponent. The Vikings also notched only two sacks for the second game in a row. Fantasy owners should consider Minnesota a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 14 against Detroit after the Lions win the previous meeting, 26-23.
News: The Minnesota Vikings are the latest defense to attempt to slow Denver QB Tim Tebow during the teams' meeting in Week 13. It might not be an easy task, especially late. With the former Heisman Trophy winner running the offense, the Broncos have scored 11 times in the fourth quarter or overtime compared to 10 scoring drives in the first three quarters combined. But the Vikings have also been quite vulnerable early. During a current three-game losing streak, Minnesota has been outscored 58-7 in the first half.
Analysis: Tebow has been more effective running the ball than passing as he gained 67 yards on 22 attempts in Week 12 -- the most carries by a quarterback since at least 1950. The Broncos will be facing a Minnesota defense that is ninth in the NFL against the run, allowing an average of 99.6 yards. Overall, the Vikings have held an opponent to less than 300 total yards in a game only once this season. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect much of a turnaround and consider Minnesota a No. 2 Fantasy DST for the Week 13 outings.
News: The Vikings didn't get blown out Week 12 at Atlanta, which is perhaps an accomplishment in itself. Still, their defensive performance wasn't anything particularly special. They allowed 24 points on 335 yards, recording two sacks and recovering one fumble. They've now allowed more than 20 points in six straight games and 10 of 11 games this season.
Analysis: The Vikings have a few playmakers on defense -- most notably DL Jared Allen -- but as a unit, they're not particularly productive in Fantasy. Even with favorable matchups, the Vikings DST isn't an advisable Fantasy option. You should think of it as a No. 2 unit for Week 13 against the Broncos.
News: The Vikings have come out of their bye on a two-game losing streak and will look to end that skid in Week 12, but it will be a tall task against the Falcons. The defense will have its hands full trying to slow down players like Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez and Julio Jones, if he returns from a lingering hamstring injury. The Falcons are averaging 369.0 yards and 23.5 points per game. They have scored 23 or more points in five straight games.
Analysis: After being a little inconsistent on offense to start the year, the Falcons have figured it out lately, which doesn't bode well for the Vikings. Minnesota has held just one opponent -- Arizona -- to under 20 points in 2011. The Vikings' biggest struggles come on pass defense. They are yielding 259.4 passing yards per game. The loss of cornerback Antoine Winfield isn't easy to overcome either. We aren't expecting a strong defensive performance from Minnesota in Week 12, so consider the Vikings DST a desperation Fantasy option.
News: The Vikings recorded four sacks against the Raiders in Week 11, giving them four straight games with at least three. But for the first time all season, none of their sacks came from DL Jared Allen, who had only two assisted tackles on the day. Instead, they came from LB Chad Greenway, LB E.J. Henderson, DL Kevin Williams and DL Brian Robison. The Vikings also recovered a fumble and blocked a field goal in the contest. They allowed 27 points on 301 yards.
Analysis: The 301 yards were the second-fewest the Vikings have allowed in a game this season, so you could argue they had their best defensive performance yet in Week 11. The 27 points were largely a result of five turnovers committed by the offense and special teams. Still, the Vikings DST has allowed an average of 32.6 points over its last five games, so you should probably leave it on the waiver wire for Week 12 at Atlanta.
News: After giving up four passing touchdowns to Packers QB Aaron Rodgers last week, the last thing the Vikings secondary needed was more bad news. But they got it in the form of a broken clavicle for DB Antoine Winfield, who landed on injured reserve Wednesday. Down a man heading into Week 11, the Vikings and their 30th-ranked pass defense will be taking on a red-hot Raiders offense led by veteran QB Carson Palmer, who is averaging 315.5 passing yards in two starts. And the loss of Winfield is something he plans to exploit. "It definitely changes things," Palmer said. "Hes been a great player in this league for a long time."
Analysis: Though the Vikings clearly have issues against the pass, they rank sixth against the run, allowing 93.9 yards per game, so they should be able to slow down RB Michael Bush, who put up 242 total yards at San Diego last week. Still, the Raiders' passing attack has improved enough with Palmer under center that the Vikings figure to give up their share of points and yardage anyway. They'll always be a good source of sacks thanks to DL Jared Allen, but you should treat the Vikings DST as just a No. 2 Fantasy option this week.
News: The Vikings DST may as well have not been on the field in the Week 10 Monday night loss at Green Bay. The Packers went up and down the field on the Vikings DST as the unit surrendered 356 yards in the 45-7 drubbing. The Vikings DST did force one turnover on a fumble recovery. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked twice in the game, with one coming from Jared Allen, who got one game closer to an NFL record. Allen has recorded a whole sack in eight straight games and the record is 10.
Analysis: The sack record chase for Allen gives the Vikings something tangible to get Fantasy owners points each week. That said, the Vikings DST has not been a great option in Fantasy this season. With only two big efforts against the Chargers and Cardinals, the Vikings DST has highly underwhelmed. The unit plays Oakland in Week 11 and is just a low-end option in Fantasy.
News: The Vikings DST will likely have their hands full trying to slow down the Packers in Week 10. Green Bay enters the contest averaging a league-leading 34.4 points per game and put up 416 yards of offense and 33 points during the team's first meeting this season. Minnesota enters the contest ranked 20th in total defense, allowing 368 yards and 24.9 points per game. The Vikings DST is ranked 26th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 24 sacks, while forcing 11 turnovers thus far.
Analysis: The Vikings' have struggled on the defensive side of the ball thus far and now look to have another tough matchup in Week 10. Green Bay's offense is clicking on all cylinders right now and had no problems moving the ball up and down the field the last time these two team's squared off. It is hard to imagine Minnesota being able to slow down Aaron Rodgers and company this time around, so owners should not use the Vikings DST on Monday night.
News: For the second straight week and for the third time this season, the Vikings' DST allowed an opponent to gain more than 400 net yards of offense. Though the Vikings emerged victorious over the Panthers in Week 8, they allowed the Panthers to rack up 21 points on 405 offensive yards. They were unable to intercept QB Cam Newton, but the Carolina defense did sack Newton three times, and on two of those sacks, they forced and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: If not for a pair of fumble recoveries, it would have been a bleak afternoon for the Vikings DST. They have not been very formidable in recent weeks, so owners should not consider them as anything more than a No. 2 DST unit. They should be avoided completely in Week 9, as the Vikings have a bye.
News: The Vikings DST has had a difficult time in its last two games, as the defense has allowed more than 30 points and 350 yards of offense in contests against the Bears and Packers. In Week 8, they will face another tough test, as they will travel to Carolina to face the Panthers' fifth-ranked offense. The Vikings have had an especially difficult time defending the pass, and the Panthers rank fifth in the league in passing yards per game.
Analysis: Earlier in the year, the Vikings DST was a decent low-end start in standard leagues, but between their recent struggles and unfavorable upcoming matchup, they should be avoided in those formats. For Week 8, consider the Vikings DST to be nothing more than a No. 2 DST unit.
News: The Vikings did not do a good job of slowing down the Packers in Week 7. Minnesota allowed 421 yards of total offense, including 307 through the air in the 33-27 loss. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers completed 80 percent of his passes and tossed three scores while not turning the ball over. The Vikings were able to were able to sack Rodgers four times, though, including two by DL Jared Allen.
Analysis: The Vikings have been very poor against the pass thus far and they were exposed big time by the Packers on Sunday. And with Carolina up next on the schedule, Minnesota could be in for another long game. Until they get better on defense, continue to view the Vikings DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: After getting carved up for 267 yards and two touchdowns through the air a week ago, the Vikings could be in for another long game in Week 7 against the Packers. Green Bay enters Sunday sporting the No. 3 passing attack in the league, averaging over 325 yards per contest, and rank 24th in rushing. Minnesota ranks 24th in the league against the pass and fourth in rush defense. The Vikings have recorded 17 sacks so far this season with six interceptions and a defense touchdown.
Analysis: Minnesota has one of the better pass rushes in the league and have been tough against the run but their pass D is a glaring weakness. Unfortunately, that is what the Packers do best and not many teams have been able to slow them down. The Vikings look to be in for another poor Fantasy performance so consider their DST as more of a low-end No. 2 option for Week 7.
News: Minnesota had trouble stopping Chicago on Sunday night as allowed Jay Cutler to throw for 267 yards and two scores. The Bears also tallied over 100 yards on the ground en route to a 39-10 victory over the Vikings. Minnesota DL Jared Allen did recover a fumble on the day though, which was the only turnover the Vikings would muster. Allen also had the only sack of the game for Minnesota. Cutler had been sacked 18 times on the year entering Sunday.
Analysis: Minnesota has a tough task in Week 7 as they host Green Bay a team that can pile up the points and yards. At this point the Vikings are a mess on both sides of the ball and are not a recommended DST option for next Sunday.
News: Minnesota forced four turnovers in Week 5 against Arizona and will look keep that momentum going in Week 6 versus Chicago. The Vikings are allowing 76.4 rushing yards and 271.8 passing yards per game this year. They've intercepted six passes and recorded a league high 16 sacks through five weeks. Opposing team's DSTs are getting 8.80 Fantasy points per game this season.
Analysis: Vikings DL Jared Allen has excelled versus the Bears over his last 14 contests and is coming off a game where he had two sacks. If Allen can get pressure on Jay Cutler, who's been sacked 18 times this year, Minnesota could turn out a nice outing. Fantasy owners should view the Vikings' DST as a decent bye-week replacement option for Week 6.
News: The Vikings DST certainly stopped the Cardinals in Week 5 as Minnesota finally recorded a victory on the season. Minnesota allowed the Cardinals just 291 total yards on the afternoon in the 34-10 win. The Vikings DST forced four Arizona turnovers in the game as Kevin Kolb was picked off twice and backup QB Richard Bartel once. Kolb also lost a fumble as he had a terrible game. The Vikings DST sacked Kolb and company four times in the game as Jared Allen and Brian Robison each came away with two apiece.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has been recording sacks all season as they now have 12 in the last three games alone against the Lions, Chiefs and Cardinals. Heading into Week 6 at Chicago, we believe the Vikings DST could be an underrated Fantasy unit. That said, there are likely still better options available. In a pinch, the Vikings DST could be a decent bye-week replacement option.
News: The Vikings DST has proven it can get to the quarterback after four weeks of the season heading into Week 5 against Arizona. Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb, who has already been sacked 12 times in four games, better watch his back in Week 5 as the Vikings DST have recorded 12 sacks on the season themselves. The Vikings, however, have only forced two turnovers in the last three games played and haven't scored a defensive touchdown since Week 1 at San Diego.
Analysis: Arizona QB Kolb has been sacked seven times in the last two games against Seattle and the New York Giants, and he's thrown four picks in his last three contests. Kolb and the Cardinals have been turnover prone and Week 5 is not a great scoring period for Fantasy DST units in general. For that reason, Fantasy owners can treat the Vikings DST as a No. 1 Fantasy unit worthy of a start across the board against Arizona.
News: The Chiefs entered Week 4 as the NFL's lowest-scoring team, but they managed to move the ball well against the Vikings' tepid defense. It was an unimpressive showing by the Vikings' DST unit in a 22-17 loss to the formerly-winless Chiefs. The Kansas City offense amassed 350 net yards, including 247 passing yards, and they did not turn the ball over. The Vikings did manage to sack Chiefs QB Matt Cassel three times.
Analysis: The Vikings entered Week 4 as one of the lesser DST options in Fantasy, and they did nothing with a favorable matchup against the Chiefs to change that. Though their Week 5 opponent, the Cardinals, may not be much more of a challenge, owners in most Fantasy formats should continue to go with other alternatives.
News: The Vikings defense will face one of the league's worst offenses in Week 4 against the Chiefs. Kansas City is averaging 244 yards per game, which is third worst in the NFL, and averaging 9.0 points per game, which is worst in the NFL.
Analysis: The Chiefs have been lost on offense to begin 2011. They did lose star running back Jamaal Charles to a knee injury, but it seems the loss of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis has had a bigger impact. Minnesota has had two straight second-half collapses, but the potential is there for them to be very good. This is could be a week you consider the Vikings DST a sleeper unit.
News: The Vikings DST was looking tough at halftime on Sunday of Week 3 against the Lions. Holding a 20-0 halftime lead, the DST was boasting keeping that Lions offense down. The second half was a different story, however, and the Lions ended up beating the Vikings DST, 26-23, in overtime. The Vikings DST limited the Lions to 358 total yards of offense and could not force a single turnover. Jared Allen was the defensive hero for the Vikings as he recorded three sacks of QB Matthew Stafford. The Vikings finished with five sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Vikings DST did next to nothing on Sunday outside of Allen's three sacks. Allen is an All-Pro piece on an otherwise shoddy defense. The Vikings have been unable to force turnovers all season and have forced just one in the last two games. They've managed some sacks, thanks to Allen, but are not a recommended Fantasy option heading into Week 4 at Kansas City. The Chiefs are certainly bad enough that you could consider the Vikings DST somewhat of a sleeper.
News: The Vikings DST enter Week 3 against the Lions with a very tall task ahead of them. The Lions scored 27 points Week 1 against Tampa Bay and then erupted for 48 points Week 2 against the Chiefs. Opposing DST units have averaged just four Fantasy points per game against the Lions, which does not bode well for the Vikings DST heading into Week 3.
Analysis: The Vikings DST does have a touchdown to its credit after two games this season. Without that score, they'd be a bottom-of-the-barrel unit. The Vikings have forced just four turnovers in two games against the Chargers and Buccaneers and has just four sacks as well. Fantasy owners should consider the Vikings DST no better than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy unit for Week 3.
News: Like a closer in baseball, the Vikings defense could not hold on late with the game in its hands Week 2 against the Buccaneers. Minnesota was up 17-0 at half time, but the Tampa Bay offense stormed back to score 24 points in the final two quarters to steal a win. The Vikings were in top form early on, and they were able to snag an interception off of Josh Freeman while sacking him twice on the afternoon. The defense held the Bucs to 335 total yards in the 24-20 loss.
Analysis: The Vikings came out on fire, but they were cooled off as soon as the third quarter began. The Minnesota offense did not help much with some three-and-outs of their own, so the defense was asked to do plenty. Fantasy owners should stick with the Vikings DST for the most part, but they are a tough sell for the Week 3 matchup with the explosive Lions, who hung 48 points on the Chiefs Sunday.
News: After falling apart to Philip RIvers and the Chargers last week as the game wore on, the Vikings defense is looking to rebound Week 2 against the Buccaneers. They were gashed by the pass, but the Bucs plan to run the ball more with LeGarrette Blount after he was held to five carries. The play of DTs Letroy Guion and Remi Ayodele in the interior of the defensive line will be crucial to stopping the run.
Analysis: Last week, the Vikings secondary blanketed Charger wideouts, but Rivers gashed the defense with underneath throws to San Diego's RBs. Bucs RB Earnest Graham caught eight passes in Tampas dink-and-dunk approach against Detroit. If the secondary adjusts this week to take away WR Mike Williams, the backs may not be as gashing as Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews were even if they haul in plenty of passes. Fantasy owners should seek other options in Week 2, the Vikings DST has too many areas to defense against the upstart Bucs.
News: After allowing seven points during the first half against one of the league's top offenses in 2010, Minnesota quickly showed it still has work to do. The Vikings surrendered 17 points after halftime, including a pair of touchdowns to San Diego RB Mike Tolbert, in a 24-17 loss to the Chargers in Week 1. Minnesota effectively limited the home team in the first half and permitted 173 total yards, which included just 35 on the ground amongst Tolbert and Ryan Mathews. But the Vikings gave up a points on three of San Diego's four possession after halftime to fall to 0-1.
Analysis: Minnesota could not slow the Chargers' methodical passing attack in the second half and was peppered for 18 first downs as San Diego finished with nearly 15 more minutes in time of possession. There were positives as the Vikings picked off QB Philip Rivers twice and sacked him twice for a loss of five yards. Minnesota, which yielded an average of 210.4 passing yards per game last year, was on the hook for an astounding 330 Sunday. Fantasy owners should consider the Vikings a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 2 against Tampa Bay.
News: After finishing with a top-10 pass defense last season, the Minnesota DST hopes to replicate that showing this year. The Vikings face a stiff task in their Week 1 opponent -- the high-powered San Diego offense, which is annually among the top passing offenses in the NFL. But Minnesota named a new defensive coordinator, former linebackers coach Fred Pagac, during the offseason and that could bolster the inconsistent defense.
Analysis: The Vikings allowed 210.4 passing yards per game last season, which is more than 70 yards less than the mark Chargers QB Philip Rivers posted. Minnesota also managed 15 interceptions as its secondary remains a question mark. However, the team returns star DE Jared Allen, who collected 11 sacks last year and should be able to pressure Rivers. Fantasy owners should consider other options before settling on the Minnesota DST.
News: After coaching the linebackers for the last five years, Fred Pagac has been promoted to defensive coordinator for the Vikings. "Im excited about our players and staff and think that keeping continuity is very important," Pagac said. "It helps everyone involved, the players and coaches both." The defensive scheme will remain the same.
Analysis: The Vikings defense was a bit inconsistent in 2010, but they had some standout performances on the year. Most notably, shutting down Michael Vick and the Eagles in Week 16. Minnesota also brought in Mike Singletary to take Pagac's old job, a move that should further the development of the already solid LB corps. The DST as a whole, will likely be a draftable Fantasy option next summer despite the roller coaster year.
News: The Vikings have brought in former 49ers coach Mike Singletary to be the linebackers coach and assistant head coach under Leslie Frazier, who was named head coach two weeks ago. LBs E.J. Henderson, Chad Greenway and Ben Leber are all solid and the defense will not change scheme. Singletary should help their development moving forward.
Analysis: The Vikings defense was a bit inconsistent in 2010, but they had some standout performances on the year. Most notably, shutting down Michael Vick and the Eagles in Week 16. Singletary should further the development of the already solid LB corps. The DST as a whole, will likely be a draftable Fantasy option next summer despite the roller coaster year.
News: The Vikings ended up 0-2 at Ford Field in 2010 after dropping their game Week 17 against the Lions, 20-13. Minnesota also lost at Ford Field in Week 14 when bad weather forced its game against the Giants to Detroit. The Lions got two offensive touchdowns and totaled 357 yards (107 rushing). Minnesota did get its only score from its defense on a 36-yard interception return from Jared Allen in the third quarter. Minnesota also recovered a fumble and had a sack of QB Shaun Hill.
Analysis: The Vikings finished a disappointing 6-10 in 2010, but most of their struggles came on offense. The defense kept Minnesota in a lot of games and still remained a strength. If Leslie Frazier remains the Vikings head coach we can probably expect another strong defensive effort in 2011. The Vikings DST will likely be a draftable Fantasy option next summer.
News: The last time the Vikings were in Ford Field they endured a 21-3 loss to the Giants in Week 14. Yes, the Giants. If you remember, the game was moved to Ford Field after the Metrodome roof collapsed. Now the Vikings simply will be hoping to stay out of last place in the NFC North heading into their Week 17 showdown with the Lions, who call Ford Field home. If the Lions beat the Vikings on Sunday both teams will be 6-10 but Detroit will have a better record in the NFC North. Detroit is riding a three-game winning streak, averaging 21.3 points per game during that span. Minnesota beat Detroit, 24-10, in Week 3 and held the Lions to 295 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings can't go into Week 17 thinking they will be facing the same Lions team they dominated in Week 3. The fact of the matter is that the Lions might actually be playing better football than the Vikings at this juncture. While the Vikings offense has been erratic in 2010, the defense has continued to be a strong point. Minnesota is seventh in total defense (308.1 ypg) and 17th in scoring defense (22.4 ppg). The Lions are going to be a bit of a challenge in Week 17, so view the Vikings DST as a No. 2 option.
News: The Vikings DST put forth a monstrous effort on Tuesday night in Philadelphia in the Week 16 meeting. The defense was a major part of Minnesota pulling the huge upset as they defeated the Eagles 24-14 on their home turf. The Vikings DST limited Philadelphia to 331 total yards of offense in the game and just 14 points. They were highly impressive in keeping Michael Vick under wraps. The Vikings DST forced Vick into three turnovers, two fumbles lost and one badly thrown interception. The team could have had numerous other interceptions that were dropped. Even more impressive, Minnesota finished with six sacks of Vick in the game, with Antoine Winfield getting two of them. Winfield also had eight tackles, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble and a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the game.
Analysis: The Vikings DST had struggled in recent weeks but came alive against Vick and the Eagles on Tuesday. Mostly led by Winfield's huge night, the defensive touchdown definitely helped the Vikings DST's value in the performance. Still, at this late stage in the season, with just one regular-season game remaining in Week 17 at Detroit, Fantasy owners likely have a better option already on their roster. There are worse matchups in Week 17, but we still don't suggest starting the Vikings DST.
News: The Vikings defense was gashed for 40 points against the Bears below-average offense last week, and in Week 16 it gets no easier against the NFL's top-ranked offense, the Eagles. Philadelphia comes into the Sunday night game scoring no less than 30 points in their last three games. They remain as the only NFL offense to average more than 400 yards per game this season. The Vikings have given up 61 points over their last two games.
Analysis: The Vikings have gone through so much turmoil this season, and now they have to go into Philly and contain arguable the most unstoppable man in the NFL, QB Michael Vick. He has accounted for 10 touchdowns in the last three games. The worst part is that his compliment of weapons around him is among the fastest in the league, able to strike at any moment just as they did against one of the NFL's elite defense last week when they scored 28 points in the fourth quarter against the Giants. Minnesota seems completely over-matched against the best offense they have seen all year. Seek other options in Fantasy play in Week 16.
News: The Vikings defense was gashed for 40 points on almost 300 yards of offense in Week 15 against the Bears. After surrendering 20 points in the first half, Chicago exploded for 20 points in the third quarter, scoring on three straight possessions. Minnesota surrendered over 100 yards rushing on the ground for the second straight week and only was able to record one sack one Jay Cutler all game long. The unit allowed 17 first downs and only forced one turnover in the 40-14 loss.
Analysis: The Vikings defense has not been playing well of late, and Monday marked the just the third time in the last 26 years Minnesota has allowed 40 points at home. The unit has now allowed at least 20 points in nine games this season and will have to travel out to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles in Week 16. Everyone saw what Michael Vick was able to do last week against a good Giants' defense in just one quarter, so Minnesota will have their hands full next Sunday. We do not recommend starting the Vikings DST in Week 16.
News: The Vikings defense has not been able to slow many teams down in recent weeks and could be in for another long game against the Bears in Week 15. When the division foes met earlier in the year, Minnesota allowed 27 points and 360 yards of total offense. The Vikings enter Monday's matchup ranked 10th in the NFL in rush defense and 12th in passing. Chicago ranks 25th in rushing offense and 26th in passing.
Analysis: The Vikings gave up 213 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in their last outing and could be in for more of the same against the Bears. While Chicago's running game has been inconsistent, they will want to establish the run early on Monday night playing in freezing temperatures. Minnesota did not do a good job slowing down their division rival earlier in the year and have been hit with some costly injuries since then. Considering the matchup, Fantasy owners should view the Vikings DST as a low-end No. 2 option for Week 15.
News: The Vikings defense did a good job of limiting the pass in Week 14 against the Giants, but the same could not be said for the running game. Minnesota allowed New York to run for 213 yards and two touchdowns in the 21-3 loss. RBs Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw each had over 100 yards rushing and a score. The only bright spots for the Vikings were when they picked off QB Eli Manning twice in the first half. DL Jared Allen also sacked Manning once in the defeat.
Analysis: The Vikings could not slow down the Giants running game at all on Monday night and allowed long runs of 73 and 48 yards. After allowing just 14 and 13 points in the last two games, their defense feel into bad habits again and have given up over 20 points eight times this season. Minnesota had been playing better under new interim coach Leslie Frazier and hopefully will be able to get back on track next week against the Bears. When the division foes met earlier in the year, the Vikings gave up 27 points and 360 total yards of offense. Heading into Week 15, continue to view the Vikings DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the Vikings not only made a head coaching change following their 31-3 loss to Green Bay on Nov. 21, they also made a move at defensive coordinator. When Leslie Frazier became the interim head coach, linebackers coach Fred Pagac took over as the interim defensive coordinator. While Pagac didn't officially get the title, he has been getting the results. And Frazier couldn't be happier. The Vikings' defensive line has looked like its old self of late, and end Jared Allen and tackle Kevin Williams again have been dominant. This was especially true in the Vikings' 38-14 victory over Buffalo in Week 13. Minnesota was credited with only one sack of Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick but the pressure on him was nearly constant, and he was hit at least five times. Frazier couldn't have been happier with what he saw and is hoping for more when the Vikings play host to the Giants in Week 14. "I was talking to (defensive line coach) Karl Dunbar about that just because those guys have really stepped it up, and the way we're built on defense is predicated on what we get from our front four," Frazier said. "They're playing like we all expect them to play. ... (It's) a renewed sense of getting it done from our defensive line."
Analysis: During the Vikings' two-game winning streak under Frazier the team has allowed only 27 points. Although, they did face two very unpredictable offenses in Washington and Buffalo. They will get a real test in Week 14 against the Giants, who are fourth in total offense (384.6 ypg) and fifth in scoring offense (25.7 ppg). The Giants will use the running game of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw to hopefully bring the linebackers in and use the play action pass for big plays down the field. Consider the Vikings DST at best a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 14. Note: kickoff was shifted from Sunday afternoon to Monday night because of inclement weather in Minneapolis.
News: The Vikings DST was very productive against the Bills in Week 13. Buffalo produced only 14 points (and only seven on offense) and just 239 total yards. They also forced five fumbles, four of which they recovered, and they also picked off Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick one time. Though the Vikings put pressure on Fitzpatrick all day long, they only managed to sack him once.
Analysis: The Vikings have been very good at limiting opponents' yardage, and the Bills' shaky offense was no match for them in Week 13. The Giants will provide a much stiffer challenge in Week 14, so they should be treated as a No. 2 DST for that particular matchup.
News: The Vikings have been the ninth-best team in the league in limiting opponents' yardage, yet their DST is seventh-to-last in Fantasy points. The Achilles' heal of the Minnesota D has been turnovers, as only the Broncos and Bills have forced fewer than they have. The Vikings are set to host the Bills in Week 13, and though Buffalo ranks just 25th in offensive yardage, it may not be a particularly good week for the Vikings DST. The Bills have not been especially prone to giving up the ball, either by interception or fumble, as their offense ranks in the middle of the pack in both of those categories.
Analysis: The Bills' sluggish offense might seem to be a boon for the Vikings' struggling DST, but given both units' relative strengths and weaknesses, Week 13 is shaping up to be a typical week for the Vikes' D. In other words, they are not a recommended start in standard leagues.
News: The Vikings DST did a good job at getting to QB Donovan McNabb in Week 12 at Washington. The Vikings held on to win the game 17-13 and a lot of that was due to the defense's ability to get at McNabb. The Vikings DST finished the game with four sacks of the quarterback. That said, they only forced one turnover in the game, a McNabb interception. The Vikings gave up just 216 yards of offense as they did a good job stopping the Redskins' offense in the win.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has been one of the worst units in the NFL all season long and Sunday's win didn't really do anything to change that. Minnesota is playing an even worse offensive team in Week 13 at home against Buffalo. We might expect a solid effort from the Vikings DST in that one. However, Fantasy owners should still have better options to start.
News: The Vikings DST has been a terrible unit all season entering Week 12 at Washington. The DST had an ugly performance Week 11 against Green Bay and has only finished with double figures in Fantasy points four times this entire season. With only eight interceptions, 17 sacks and a league-low-tying three fumble recoveries, the Vikings DST has been atrocious all year.
Analysis: The Vikings DST could see a boost in Week 12 against a Redskins team allowing the fifth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units. Unfortunately, however, Minnesota is in turmoil after having just fired coach Brad Childress. The Redskins, on the other hand, are coming off a big overtime win in Tennessee. The Redskins have allowed a defensive touchdown in four straight games but we still don't think that is enough to warrant starting the Vikings DST in Week 12.
News: The Vikings fired Brad Childress on Monday, replacing him with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who has served as their defensive coordinator since 2007. Frazier, who is believed to be a favorite of the players in the locker room, is expected to promote a fellow coach within the organization to the defensive coordinator position. The team should remain in Cover-2 scheme and only a handful of personnel changes are expected on the defensive side of the ball.
Analysis: The Minnesota DST was walloped by the Packers in Week 11 and has been a huge disappointment in Fantasy this season, ranking 28th in standard-scoring leagues. However, the team ranks 10th in the league in total defense (seventh against the run, 15th against the pass), so they're doing some good things on the field, just not in the stat box (17 sacks, eight interceptions, three fumbles recovered and dead-last in turnovers thanks in part to a certain quarterback). With a game at Washington coming in Week 12, owners should expect at least one takeaway and a couple of sacks. Consider the Vikings DST against other options before finalizing your Week 12 lineup.
News: The Vikings DST allowed 31 points and 374 yards to the Packers in a Week 11 loss. Minnesota sacked QB Aaron Rodgers three times but didn't force a turnover.
Analysis: Once again, the Vikings did a good job against the run on Sunday, but Rodgers ate them up for 301 yards and four touchdowns through the air. The offense also didn't do a great job of keeping the defense off the field as they converted only four of 13 third downs. In Week 12, things might get a little easier when Minnesota visits Washington, so think about activating them in most formats for that favorable matchup, even after these back-to-back poor outings.
News: The Vikings defense, which has allowed 360 yards or more in three of its last four games after allowing no more than 328 in any of its first five, gets a rematch in Week 11 against the team that first put up 360 yards against it back in Week 7. The Packers come to town fresh off a bye in Week 10 and a 45-point outburst against the Cowboys in Week 9. The Vikings allowed a season-high 379 yards to the Packers back in Week 7, and they're certainly not the only team to struggle against them. The Packers give up 7.4 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, tied for seventh-lowest in the NFL.
Analysis: The Vikings rank ninth against the pass, allowing 210.8 yards per game, and ninth against the run, allowing 100.0 yards per game, so statistically speaking, they don't have a bad defense. But they're not particularly aggressive, ranking 26th with 13 sacks and 17th with eight interceptions. Against an explosive offense like the Packers', you wouldn't want to use the Vikings DST as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Vikings run defense continued to look good in Week 10 at the Bears, but the secondary was diced by Jay Cutler for the second game in as many matchups against the quarterback. Using his mobility and cannon arm, Cutler threw three touchdowns on the day en route to a Chicago win. The Vikings sacked him once and intercepted him twice while yielding 23 points and 367 total yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has been a big disappointment this year, and their outlook in Week 11 doesn't look much better as the Packers come to the Metrodome. Earlier this season the Packers scored 28 points with 379 yards. You can find better -- consider other options on waivers before going with the Vikings DST in Week 11.
News: The Vikings could have revenge on their mind when they play at Chicago in Week 10. The last time these two teams met, Jay Cutler threw four touchdowns and effectively beat them by himself. Cutler is expected to throw a bunch again on Sunday and could help the Bears stay on pace with the Vikings on the scoreboard.
Analysis: Cutler should also throw some interceptions, and with the Vikings' pass rush notching six sacks last Sunday and playing against a weak Bears O-line this week, this DST isn't a bad choice for Week 10. Start them if you own them.
News: With a pair of special teams touchdowns, the Cardinals DST stole most of the attention in Week 9, but the Vikings DST more than held their own in a 27-24 overtime victory. The defense in particular was very solid, holding the Arizona offense to a net total of just 225 yards. Coming into the game, the Minnesota defense was tied for last in the league in sacks with only six, but they registered six sacks in Week 9 alone.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who were counting on the Vikings DST in Week 9 got some nice production, but they were also facing one of the league's weakest and most sack-prone offenses. However, they face the Bears -- one of the few teams who have experienced more futility on offense than Arizona -- in Week 10. The Vikings DST is worth starting again in the coming week.
News: The Vikings DST has struggled this season, as they rank fifth from the bottom among all units in Fantasy points. In particular, they have been among the worst teams in forcing turnovers, as they have just six interceptions and four forced fumbles to date. In Week 9, though, they come up against an Arizona offense that ranks second in the league in both interceptions and fumbles. Minnesota is also dead last in sacks with six, but the Cardinals have allowed their quarterbacks to be sacked 22 times, which is tied for the third-highest total in the league.
Analysis: Normally, the Vikings DST would be a low-end No. 1 DST at best, but given the matchup at hand, it's easy to see them having a very productive week. They are a recommended start for Week 9.
News: The Vikings DST allowed 28 points on 362 yards in Week 8 against the Patriots. The unit failed to register a sack for the third straight game and had trouble putting pressure on Tom Brady. The Vikings also allowed BenJarvus Green-Ellis to score two rushing touchdowns after surrendering just three all season and failed to record a turnover in the 28-18 loss.
Analysis: Minnesota has just six sacks on the season and has been having problems putting any type of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The unit has been very good this season keeping teams total yards in check, but the unit is not recording sacks and creating turnovers with the frequency they have in the past. Minnesota is a little thin in the secondary and will have the tall task of shutting down Larry Fitzgerald in Week 8 as the Cardinals role into town. The Vikings defense always seems to play better at home and can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST against Arizona.
News: Minnesota has just six sacks so far this season heading into Week 8 against New England. DL Jared Allen has two sacks in two career games versus the Patriots, and will have to put some pressure on Tom Brady to help out his secondary. The Vikings allow 209.2 passing and 99.2 rushing yards per contest. The Patriots enter the matchup averaging 325 yards of total offense, and will challenge the Vikings this week. Minnesota does get DB Husain Abdullah back this week as he's been cleared to play. Abdullah is expected to regain his starting spot on Sunday.
Analysis: Minnesota has registered a sack in two straight games, and will need to keep that streak alive if they want to walk out of New England with a win. With uncertainty at who will play quarterback for the Vikings, the defense could be leaned on heavily with either a hobbled Brett Favre or Tarvaris Jackson under center. The Vikings have a good group of guys on defense and can shut down offenses, when they are on. That being said, we like the Vikings DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option in Fantasy Week 8.
News: The Vikings DST has registered multiple interceptions in consecutive games, after picking off Aaron Rodgers twice in the Week 7 loss to the Packers. Jared Allen got his hands on a screen pass in the first quarter, inside the red zone (the first red zone pick of Rodgers' career). Minnesota got Rodgers in the end zone for the second pick as Green Bay was threatening, when Frank Walker tipped the ball to teammate Madieu Williams who hauled it in. Still, the Vikings weren't able to register a sack for the second straight game. They allowed 28 points and 379 yards in the defeat.
Analysis: The Vikings defense held the explosive Packers in check, but Green Bay was able to move the ball and only punted twice. Rodgers passed for 295 yards and WR James Jones finished with 107 yards. In Week 8, the Vikings take on the Patriots in New England. Their offense is a middle of the road group who averages 325 yards per game. We like the Vikings defense as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option going into Week 8.
News: The Vikings DST is coming off a solid performance against the Cowboys in Week 6. E.J. Henderson was able to snag two interceptions and Percy Harvin was able to rerun a kickoff for a touchdown to help the DST cause. They will look to continue those trends against the Packers in Week 7, but it won't be easy. Green Bay put up massive offensive numbers against the Vikings in 2009. The Packers nearly averaged 400 yards of offense in the two games against Minnesota last year. This year, the Packers offense ranks 13th in the league, racking up 345.2 yards per game.
Analysis: The Packers have a high-powered offense, but they have shown weakness against a heavy pass rush. Aaron Rodgers has been sacked 14 times through six games, the 9th highest total in the NFL. The Packers also lean on the passing game led by Rodgers. Green Bay's rushing attack has only seen one RB reach 100 yards in a game this year, that was Brandon Jackson. Against the Packers in Week 7, we consider the Vikings DST to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Vikings DST played a major role in Week 6 against the Cowboys. The unit allowed 21 points on 314 yards and turned Dallas over twice. Both turnovers were via interceptions by E.J. Henderson that led to 10 points. The Vikings DST also scored a touchdown in the victory. Percy Harvin took the opening the kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 14.
Analysis: The Vikings DST was able to hold Dallas' high-powered offense in check most of the game. They surrendered just 94 yards rushing on 28 attempts and held the Cowboys to just seven second half points. The only thing disappointing about the unit's effort was their inability to get to Tony Romo as they failed to record a sack. Still, they played pretty well overall and face another high-powered offense in Week 7 when they head up to Green Bay. The Packers have plenty of weapons on offense and can put up points in a hurry. Consider the Vikings DST a low-end No. 1 option heading into Week 7.
News: The Vikings DST unit faces a tough opponent in Week 6 -- Dallas. Although the Cowboys are just 1-3 this season, they average 421.5 yards of offense and 20.3 points per game. Tony Romo has thrown for over 1,300 yards over the first four games and has a very deep pool of talented receivers to throw to. Minnesota is ranked sixth in passing defense and has forced five turnovers. The unit is ranked 28th in terms of Fantasy points for DST units so far this season.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has played pretty well this season and is only allowing 16.8 points per game over their first four games. However, the Cowboys have tons of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and have the talent to put points on the board against anyone. Still, the Vikings proved they could stop the Cowboys last season in the playoffs and are one of the better options in the league. Consider them a low-end NO. 1 DST against the Cowboys.
News: The Vikings defense had their hands full in Week 5 against the Jets and did something in the game that they hadn't done in quite awhile. Minnesota allowed New York to rush for 155 yards and a touchdown, making it the first time in 51games they gave up more than 150 yards rushing. The Vikings also allowed QB Mark Sanchez to thrown for 191 yards but sacked the quarterback twice in the 29-20 loss. WR Percy Harvin had a productive night in the return game, returning seven kicks for 175 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings D entered Monday night's game having allowed just 87.3 rushing yards per game over the first four weeks but were unable to slow down New York's double-headed attack at running back. They held the Jets to five field goals and just one offensive touchdown but spent a lot of time on the field as the Vikings offense sputtered in the first half. The Vikings DST remains one of the better options in the league and should continue to be viewed as a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 6 against the Cowboys.
News: The Vikings defense has fared pretty well in both phases of the game so far this season but will face a Jets offense in Week 5 that has a well-balanced attack. Although New York ranks 25th in the league in passing yards, QB Mark Sanchez has played better of late and will have WR Santonio Holmes, fresh off his suspension, back at his disposal. Minnesota has given up just 189 pass yards per game through the first four games -- good for eighth in the league -- and rank ninth against the run. The Jets average 167.8 rushing yards per game led by LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn GreeneAnalysis: The Vikings have a favorable matchup, as far as their strengths go, in Week 5 but will need to get a pass rush on Sanchez to be effective. Minnesota does not have the best secondary in the league but their front seven are big and strong. Keep an eye on Jared Allen against New York's O-line as it could be the difference in the game. The Vikings DST has not been impressive thus far but just needs one big game to get back on track. Consider them a No. 1 Fantasy DST against the Jets in Week 5.
News: The Vikings held the Lions to 10 points and 295 net yards of offense in Week 3 at home. They intercepted two passes and recovered one fumble while sacking Lions QB Shaun Hill once in the game. The Vikings exerted a lot of pressure on Hill, however, knocking him to the ground seven times in the game.
Analysis: The Lions didn't seem to pose much of a threat in the game, but were coming off a game in which rookie Jahvid Best totaled 232 yards and three touchdowns. Best left the game early in the second quarter with a toe injury and did not return. The Lions have allowed no more than 14 points in any of their first three games and continue to have one of the top defensive units in Fantasy. You'll have to look for other options in Week 4, however, as the Vikes will be on a bye before returning to action in Week 5 at the Jets.
News: The Vikings will be charged with the task of slowing down rookie Jahvid Best after his impressive start in the first two weeks of the season when they face the Lions at home in Week 3. Led by a three-touchdown, 232-total yard effort by Best, the Lions managed 32 points and 444 yards in a 35-32 loss to the Eagles in Week 2. The Vikings, meanwhile, have allowed 28 total points combined over two games, giving up an average of 267 total yards in the two games.
Analysis: The Vikings defense has been one of the most coveted in Fantasy the last two seasons, but they haven't been terribly active in the turnover or sack departments yet this year. Where they have been strongest under this current regime is in the running game and that bodes well for them to be able to limit Best and help keep the Lions in check the way the Bears did in Week 1 when they held the Lions to just 14 points and 168 yards of total offense. We still view the Vikings DST as a must-start in all formats for Week 3.
News: While the Vikings limited the Dolphins to 14 points and 226 total yards in Week 2, that's about all they did. They landed sacks from Jared Allen and Kevin Williams and forced a couple of fumbles, but that's about it. The kick and punt return games were non-existent.
Analysis: The Vikings DST might have been good for a few points this week, and they should be next week when the Lions come to Mall of America Field. Keep them active in Week 3 even though the Lions' offense came alive in Week 2 vs. Philadelphia.
News: The Miami Dolphins will swim to Minnesota to challenge the Vikings in Week 2, easily a better matchup for their defense compared to Week 1's game against the Saints -- a game the Vikings defense did well in. Miami struggled to move the ball against the Bills in Week 1, totaling 182 passing yards and 133 rush yards. The Dolphins' run game will have a much harder time here against the Vikings, and QB Chad Henne will throw into the teeth of a secondary that exceeded expectations in Week 1 despite being banged up.
Analysis: Tack on that the Vikings have had 10 days to rest up for this matchup, and all signs point to them being quality enough to start in Week 2 against Miami. If you own the Vikings DST, you've got a starting unit. Roll with them.
News: The Vikings defense looked as though it was going to be in for a long day in Week 1 after the Saints received the opening kickoff and scored on only five plays, with Drew Brees hitting three of his first four passes for 69 yards, including a 29-yard scoring strike to Devery Henderson on a rollout. But Minnesota quickly made the right adjustments and New Orleans scored only one more time, but still won 14-9 over the Vikings. The defense was helped out by New Orleans kicker Garrett Hartley missing two field goals. New Orleans got just 18 first downs and 308 total yards (79 rushing). The Vikings defense had one sack and forced no turnovers.
Analysis: Thursday was the lowest-scoring victory of the Sean Payton era, which began in 2006, so the Vikings defense can take something away from the loss. They did a good job of not getting beat deep despite being down CB Cedric Griffin, who is still working his way back from a knee injury. The Vikings didn't get a ton of Fantasy points in Week 1 with no turnovers and one sack, but they played well against a top offense and they are still an elite defense. Consider the Vikings DST a good start heading into Week 2 against the Dolphins.
News: Even with only three healthy cornerbacks to throw at the Saints' wide-open, pass-first offense, the Minnesota Vikings defense thinks it's ready for the highly anticipated rematch Thursday night. Perhaps the proud veteran unit's performance in the NFC title game has something to do with that. The Vikings held the Saints to 257 yards in the 31-28 overtime loss in New Orleans in January, by far the lowest output from the high-powered offense all season long. The Saints managed just 213 in the regular-season finale against Carolina, but Drew Brees did not play and a host of other regulars got just a few snaps in the game. "They did a good job keeping the guy out of rhythm," coach Brad Childress said Tuesday. "Anytime you're getting off the field on third downs ... They just got him out of kilter a little bit, whether it's knocking receivers out of kilter or rushing him and getting him moving around, it was one or the other for most of that second half."
Analysis: The Vikings' vaunted defensive line, which led the league in sacks last year, only sacked Brees once in the game. But they forced him to throw sooner than he wanted and kept the shifty Saints receivers from turning short receptions into long gains. A team that averaged 403.8 yards of offense per game managed just 73 total yards on six full drives in the second half. The Vikings held the Saints to 3 for 12 on third downs and forced four punts in the second half, and seven in the game, nearly twice as many as New Orleans averaged in the regular season. If the Vikings defenders are going to have similar success Thursday night, they are going to have to overcome even greater odds than they did the first time around. Veterans Antoine Winfield and Lito Sheppard and second-year pro Asher Allen are the only three healthy cornerbacks heading into the game against an offense that loves to run four, and sometimes even five, receivers on any given play. Starting cornerback Cedric Griffin has practiced some this week and says he is close to coming back from a torn knee ligament suffered in the NFC title game, but it would appear that he is a long shot to play in Week 1. This doesn't appear to be a favorable matchup for Minnesota, given all of its secondary problems, but it's going to be tough to bench the Vikings DST in Fantasy unless you have a better matchup on your bench.
News: The Vikings have not ruled out CB Cedric Griffin playing this week in New Orleans. Griffin blew out his left knee in the NFC championship game against the Saints last January, an anterior cruciate ligament injury that typically requires about nine months of recovery. Griffin recently returned to practice, but he was listed as a limited participant on the injury report released Monday by the Vikings. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said Monday that Griffin has "already done far more than we expected" since deciding to include him on the active 53-man roster. Rookie Chris Cook did not practice Monday because of a knee injury, leaving the Vikings with only three fully healthy cornerbacks against the pass-happy Saints.
Analysis: Getting Griffin back for Week 1 against the Saints would be impressive, but we're not expecting him to return for this game. But even without Griffin, the Vikings remain a No. 1 DST in all leagues. This isn't a great matchup based on the New Orleans offense, but it's hard to bench the Vikings based on their pass rush and ability to create turnovers.
News: After finishing the 2009 season ranked sixth in overall defense (305.5 ypg) and 10th in scoring defense (19.5 ppg), the Vikings head into the 2010 season with lofty expectations. However, the defense is showing in the preseason that it is ready to meet the challenge. The Vikings have not allowed more than 15 points in any of their three preseason contests. They are second in total defense (235.7 ypg) and third in scoring defense (11.7 ppg).
Analysis: It should be another successful year for the Vikings defense despite the fact they have a big bullseye on their back. There are a lot of familiar faces returning in 2010. You have Pat Williams, Kevin Williams, Ray Edwards and Jared Allen up front. You have Chad Greenway and E.J. Henderson at linebacker. In the secondary, the addition of Lito Sheppard can help a pass defense that was considered a weakness for Minnesota a season ago. The Vikings have been the second most drafted DST in CBSSports.com leagues, so feel confident in them as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: A Minnesota judge said the NFL failed to notify Vikings DTs Kevin and Pat Williams of their test results within three days, as required in Minnesota, and said an NFL official played "a game of 'gotcha'" with them. But he said that wasn't enough to block the NFL's plan to suspend the players for four games each for taking a banned substance. The NFL first attempted to suspend the defensive tackles in December 2008, a few months after they tested positive for a banned diuretic that was in the StarCaps weight-loss supplement they were taking. They were not accused of taking steroids and said they had no idea the diuretic was in the supplement. The players challenged their suspensions while their lawsuit played out in federal and state court. They got to play for the entire 2009-10 season, helping Minnesota reach the NFC championship game, where it lost to eventual Super Bowl winner New Orleans.
Analysis: The decision doesn't necessarily clear the way for the NFL to suspend Kevin Williams and Pat Williams for part of next season, however. The judge put off a decision on whether to extend an injunction blocking the suspensions pending an expected appeal by the players. A decision isn't expected for about two weeks. If the Williamses are suspended, the Vikings DST will lose some luster, but they're prepared for their departure with Fred Evans and Jimmy Kennedy on the roster. Not having them for matchups against the Saints, Dolphins, Lions and Jets, however, would hurt Minnesota's chances of limiting their opponents' run games. They remain a No. 1 DST and will be a quality option this summer.
News: The Minnesota Vikings have signed cornerback Lito Sheppard, shoring up their secondary while Cedric Griffin recovers from surgery on his left knee. Sheppard played seven seasons with Philadelphia, the first four while Vikings head coach Brad Childress was the Eagles' offensive coordinator. He was traded to the Jets last offseason and was released by the team in March. "Lito is a great guy who fits what we are looking for," Childress said. "He's the type of person and player we value at the cornerback position."
Analysis: Sheppard is a good NFL cornerback who will definitely add talent to the Vikings' secondary. This only helps the defensive unit as a whole remain a quality Fantasy option. Look their way just before the last couple of rounds of your draft if you want to spend a halfway decent pick on what should be a strong DST.
News: Vikings DT Pat Williams said Monday he's "50-50" on whether he'll return for the final year of his contract. The three-time Pro Bowl pick said he feels fine physically, but is mentally "drained" after a devastating end to his 13th NFL season. Williams is the anchor of a defense that gave up the fewest yards rushing in the league for three straight seasons starting in 2006.
Analysis: If Williams retires, the Vikings run defense will almost definitely slide as he won't be there to clog up holes up front and severely slow down opposing running backs. For now, the Vikings DST is a No. 1 option headed into 2010.
News: Better news for the Vikings on Friday: The team saw starting defensive linemen Ray Edwards and Kevin Williams return to practice. They're listed as questionable with knee injuries. Defensive tackle Pat Williams (elbow/foot) and cornerback Benny Sapp (ankle/back) are also questionable.
Analysis: Considering the Vikings DST in Playoff Challenge leagues is a risky option since their run defense clearly won't be at 100 percent and the Saints are sure to capitalize. Their pass rush might also be compromised. Either option from the AFC title game is a better pick at this juncture.
News: Just three days away from the NFC title game, the Minnesota Vikings' injury situation isn't looking any better. Defensive tackle Kevin Williams and defensive end Ray Edwards missed their second straight practice on Thursday because of knee trouble. If the Vikings are going slow down the league's highest scoring offense in New Orleans, Williams and Edwards figure to play a big part in it. "They are vital cogs to our success on defense," defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said. "So we need the both of them. You'd like to have them at 100 percent. Not sure if that will be the case. But just their presence will make a difference."
Analysis: Considering the Vikings DST in Playoff Challenge leagues is a risky option since their run defense clearly won't be at 100 percent and the Saints are sure to capitalize. Their pass rush might also be compromised. Either option from the AFC title game is a better pick at this juncture.
News: The Vikings allowed just seven points and 181 total net yards of offense in Week 17 against the Giants. They forced two turnovers and sacked QB Eli Manning three times.
Analysis: The Vikings had been playing poorly defensively in recent weeks, but they got going early and often against the Giants and looked to be gaining momentum heading into the playoffs. The Vikings have one of the better run defenses in the NFL, which often forces opposing teams to be one dimensional against them. With players like Jared Allen, Ray Edwards, Chad Greenway, Antoine Winfield and more the Vikings defense should remain an elite option in Fantasy leagues next season.
News: The Minnesota Vikings don't expect CB Antoine Winfield to be at full strength until the offseason. Winfield missed six games with a foot injury, before returning with a standout performance against Cincinnati three weeks ago. The past two games were some of his worst, though. Winfield was beaten in coverage several times. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said Thursday that a reduced role for Winfield is being considered. A healthy backup could be better suited to more extensive action given Winfield's health. The Vikings hope to have DT Pat Williams back for Sunday's game against the Giants after missing the last one with an elbow injury. His backup Jimmy Kennedy has missed practice this week with a thumb injury.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Winfield, Williams and Kennedy and hope all are at 100 percent against the Giants, but you might be better off resting them in IDP leagues. The Vikings DST is still a quality option with those players limited, but consider the unit a low-end No. 1 option against the Giants.
News: The Minnesota Vikings lost a heart breaker in overtime to the Chicago Bears on Monday night of Week 16. The Vikings were down big much of the night but scored 30 points in the second half to force overtime. The Bears would ultimately win in the extra frame, 36-30, on a 39-yard TD strike from Jay Cutler to Devin Aromashodu. The Vikings DST allowed Chicago to rack up 363 yards of offense and could not stop Cutler after he was so terrible just one week prior. They managed just one interception off the QB with the most in the NFL. The Vikings forced only the one turnover the entire night and managed to sack Cutler just only twice.
Analysis: The Vikings DST was able to stop Matt Forte but not Cutler in the Monday night game. They didn't get to Cutler or force him to turn the ball over and that was their downfall. The Vikings DST has been a No. 1 Fantasy option for much of the season and that should continue Week 17 against the Giants. Minnesota still needs to win after the Monday night loss.
News: The Vikings DST struggled Sunday at Carolina in a 26-7 loss. The Vikings only had two sacks and two forced fumbles. Percy Harvin had two kickoff returns for 31 yards, Darius Reynaud had four punt returns for 58 yards and one kickoff return for 15 yards and Jimmy Kennedy had one kickoff return for 6 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST should rebound in Week 16 at Chicago. Consider the Vikings DST a No. 1 option against the Bears.
News: In the Vikings' Week 14 win vs. the Bengals, the DST had a sack and a forced fumble while holding the Bengals to 10 points and their passing game under 100 yards.
Analysis: This was a good week for Vikings DST owners who get bonus points for holding opponents yardage to inside of 200. They'll face a stiff challenge at Carolina in Week 15 but one they match up well for. Continue to start the Vikings DST in all leagues.
News: The Vikings DST was a massive disappointment in Week 13, failing to record a sack or interception of Kurt Warner. They only forced and recovered one fumble in the game as the Cardinals picked them apart through the air for three scores and 285 yards. Making matters worse, the Vikings lost LB E.J. Henderson to a serious leg injury in the game when he was carted off the field. The man in the middle of the defense might be out for the season.
Analysis: The Vikings will have their hands full again in Week 14 when the Bengals roar into Mall of America Field. Boasting a powerful run game and a strong offensive line, we might see another rough outing from the Vikings DST next week -- you might want to peek at the waiver wire and see if there's a better option available, though it would also mean carrying two DSTs if there's one on waivers to your liking.
News: The Vikings had a dominant defensive performance against the Bears in Week 12, allowing 10 points on only 169 yards. They recorded four sacks and one interception and recovered one fumble.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is one of the most consistent units in Fantasy -- the kind you start regardless of matchups. It has a tough matchup Week 13 at Arizona, but it's still worth using as a low-end No. 1 DST.
News: The Vikings DST was solid against the Seahawks in Week 11, holding them to nine points, 4 net rushing yards, 231 passing yards and no passing touchdowns (one rushing). They also had two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.
Analysis: Look for the Vikings DST to remain strong in Week 12 when they take on the pass-happy (and interception-prone) Bears. Start them as a No. 1 option in all leagues.
News: Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield has given himself an "85 percent" chance of returning to play this week. he hurt his right foot on Oct. 18 against Baltimore and sat out the last three games. He participated in much of Wednesday's practice, saying afterward if he's not ready for Sunday's game against Seattle he's "100 percent" sure he'll play the following week against Chicago. Coach Brad Childress says Winfield has been "green-lighted" to push as hard as he feels he can during practice.
Analysis: Winfield will help a Vikings secondary that's expected to see a lot of work against the pass-oriented Seahawks in Week 11. Consider the Vikings DST a top option for their matchup. Having Winfield back will only help.
News: The Vikings DST played well Sunday against the Lions, but Fantasy owners were hoping for more against lowly Detroit. Minnesota had three sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery while allowing 10 points. Percy Harvin led the return game with one kickoff return for 29 yards. Darius Reynaud had four punt returns for 12 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy option, and hopefully they will play at a high level in Week 11 against Seattle. Keep them active in all formats.
News: The Vikings DST gave up 26 points and 355 yards to the Packers in a Week 8 win, but did manage to rack up six sacks.
Analysis: The Vikings held the Packers to 47 yards in the first half on Sunday, but Green Bay really started to find their stride in the second half and finished with decent numbers through the air. Minnesota is off in Week 9, so you'll have to look elsewhere. They remain a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield will not play on Sunday against the Packers. The Pro Bowler was listed as out in Friday's injury report. He also missed last week's game against Pittsburgh because of the injured right foot. Coach Brad Childress says he saw Winfield make progress throughout the week, but the Vikings have a bye after Green Bay, so they could be playing it safe with one of their most important defenders.
Analysis: Despite Winfield not playing, the Vikings DST is good enough to use as a low-end No. 1 option in Week 8 against the Packers, mainly because they should put up lots of sacks and possibly hold the Packers to limited yardage, something they failed to do last week. Keep them active if you don't have a better option in Week 8.
News: The Vikings DST got a score from Percy Harvin on a kickoff return and also had three sacks and two forced fumbles despite losing at Pittsburgh in Week 7. On the positive side, the Vikings held Pittsburgh to 175 yards passing and just over 100 total rush yards. Moreover, the Steelers offense scored just 13 points on Minnesota.
Analysis: The Vikings DST will continue to have their hands full when they play at Green Bay in Week 8. Still, they should put lots of pressure on QB Aaron Rodgers because his offensive line is struggling to stop pass rushers. Consider them a low-end No. 1 option for their next matchup.
News: Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at Pittsburgh with a sprained right foot. Winfield was injured last Sunday against Baltimore and did not practice all week. Benny Sapp would likely get the start in his place if Winfield cannot play with Karl Paymah also seeing playing time. Other players listed as questionable for the game: safety Madieu Williams (quadriceps) and backup safety Husain Abdullah (back).
Analysis: The Vikings secondary might be in for a rough time in Week 7 without Winfield. You might want to consider benching this DST for a more promising option (Colts, Packers, Panthers are good sleepers) this week.
News:Antoine Winfield, the Minnesota Vikings' smallest player, left a giant hole in the defense when he left the game against Baltimore with a sprained right foot. The Vikings are hoping the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Pro Bowl cornerback can be ready for a big test Sunday in Pittsburgh against the suddenly pass-happy Steelers. But Winfield has missed the first two days of practice this week, which is not a good sign. "If there's anybody that has a chance (to play) because of the notes he takes and how he looks at it, (it's Winfield)," coach Brad Childress said Thursday. "At some point you have to warm up and move around, but I don't know right now."
Analysis: It sounds like Winfield will miss the game at Pittsburgh, so plan on keeping him reserved in IDP leagues. Without Winfield, the Vikings DST could struggle like it did against the Ravens. Consider the Vikings DST a low-end No. 1 option.
News: Vikings Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield did not practice on Wednesday because of a sprained right foot. Coach Brad Childress says Winfield will be evaluated throughout the week before a decision is made on his availability for the game Sunday at Pittsburgh. Winfield was injured in the second quarter against Baltimore, and the Vikings defense struggled mightily without him. Safety Madieu Williams was limited with sore quadriceps.
Analysis: The Vikings DST could be in for a rough week if Winfield can't play well with the sprained foot. Last week Joe Flacco went from a pumpkin to a Pro Bowler once Winfield left the game, and Ben Roethlisberger could do the same against the Vikes in Week 7. Consider the Vikings DST good enough to start in Week 7 so long as you consider other options first. Remember there are a lot of bad offenses out there right now, so picking up a DST starting against one of those bad offenses might go a long way.
News: Vikings coach Brad Childress said Monday that Pro Bowl CB Antoine Winfield has a sprained right foot, but that he "won't rule him in or rule him out at this point" for next Sunday's game at Pittsburgh. Winfield missed the entire second half of the win over Baltimore, which happens to coincide with when the Ravens' offense began to move the ball effectively. The Vikings DST only had three sacks and a forced fumble Sunday against Baltimore while giving up 31 points.
Analysis: The Vikings DST should still be touted as a No. 1 unit and should be started in all leagues in Week 7 against Pittsburgh unless an incredible option is available off waivers. The Vikings need Winfield to be healthy, however, for this defense to fully be effective. The Vikings also lost key return man Percy Harvin to a shoulder injury, though early indications are that he'll be OK. We'll keep you posted on what's happening with this defense and special teams.
News: The Vikings DST only had three sacks and a forced fumble Sunday against Baltimore. More importantly, Vikings Pro Bowl CB Antoine Winfield left in the second quarter with a foot injury. Vikings coach Brad Childress said about Winfield's turf toe injury, which kept him out for the entire second half: "He wanted to go back in for the second half, but we wanted to err on the side of caution. We just didn't think it was prudent to do that."
Analysis: The Vikings DST continues to be a No. 1 unit and should be started in all leagues in Week 7 against Pittsburgh. The Vikings need Winfield to be healthy, however, for this defense to fully be effective. The Vikings also lost key return man Percy Harvin to a shoulder injury, and he will be evaluated for next week. Keep an eye on Harvin and Winfield heading into the Steelers game.
News: The Vikings DST found the end zone and forced four turnovers (three fumbles, one interception) as Minnesota routed the Rams 38-10. DL Jared Allen returned a fumble for a touchdown, but the Vikings did give up 400 yards to St. Louis.
Analysis: The Vikings have been a top-five Fantasy DST for a while now and they don't look like slowing down any time this season. In Week 6, they will get a nice test against the Ravens, but remain a must-start option.
News: The Vikings DST played an almost flawless game on Monday night at home against the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre and company ran all over the Packers and the Vikings won the game 30-23. The only thing the Vikings DST did not do well was limit the yards allowed to the Packers, who won the yardage battle with 424 on the night. Still, Minnesota got to QB Aaron Rodgers a ridiculous eight times in the game. Jared Allen picked up 4.5 of those sacks and also forced a safety. The Vikings also picked off a Rodgers pass marking the first interception he's thrown this season. Plus, they recovered a fumble. In all, the Vikings DST recorded eight sacks, two turnovers and forced a safety. That is dominance.
Analysis: The only thing Minnesota didn't do was score a defensive touchdown but you still have to be ecstatic about their Monday night performance. The Vikings DST continues to produce for Fantasy owners. We thought Monday night would be a battle and they were still amazing. Continue using them as a No. 1 unit and treat them as a must-start Fantasy option Week 5 as they play against the lowly Rams in St. Louis. They are likely the No. 1 overall DST for Week 5 with that matchup.
News: The Vikings DST did a nice job holding down the 49ers offense thanks to an early-game injury to Frank Gore, yielding two offensive scores and a score on a blocked field goal. The DST got a sack, an interception and a forced fumble, and Percy Harvin returned a kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Vikings DST continues to produce for Fantasy owners, but they'll be in for a fight against the Packers in Week 4. Consider them worthy of starting unless you're carrying another elite DST choice, in which case that other team might be better.
News: Minnesota shut down rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford after he and the Lions had some success early, taking control in the second half on Adrian Peterson's 27-yard touchdown, Brett Favre's second pass for a score and Ryan Longwell's two field goals during a 27-13 win. The Lions totaled just 265 yards, including 136 through the air. Minnesota had two sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: It was a little surprising the Vikings struggled against Detroit early, as the Lions held a 10-0 lead. However, once they woke up, the Minnesota defense owned Stafford and dominated the second half. The Vikings defense has looked strong in the first two weeks, albeit against weak opponents. They get a fairly decent team in Week 3 against the 49ers, but the Vikings DST is still a recommended Fantasy start.
News: The Vikings forced two turnovers and recorded four sacks in Week 1 at Cleveland. They allowed 20 points and 268 net yards of offense.
Analysis: The Vikings remain one of the top defenses against the rush in the NFL and they held the Browns to 89 yards on the ground and 179 net passing yards. They remain an elite defensive unit in Fantasy for Week 2 against a Lions offense led by rookie Matt Stafford.
News: A federal appeals court says the NFL can't suspend Minnesota Vikings Pat Williams and Kevin Williams for violating the league's anti-doping policy. The decision came Friday, two days before the Viking open the season at Cleveland. The NFL had cleared the two to play Sunday, but the court fight was still pending.
Analysis: The NFL wanted to suspend the Williamses for four games after they both tested positive for a banned diuretic during training camp in 2008. Until you hear about the 'Williams Wall' getting suspended, figure them to play. They're a big key in the success of the Minnesota run defense and pass rush, and they're part of the reason why the Vikings DST is worth a late-round pick in drafts as a No. 1 option. Kevin Williams is also a decent start in IDP leagues.
News: An NFL spokesman says Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams will play in the season-opener at Cleveland this weekend, regardless of what happens with their court case this week. The players are challenging a four-game suspension handed down for violating the league's drug policy. Neither is accused of taking steroids, and the case is tied up in court. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday that even if the court rules for the NFL, the suspensions will not begin this weekend.
Analysis: The players want swift resolution so any suspensions won't hang over them during the upcoming season, which begins at Cleveland. After the Williamses sued to fight the suspensions announced last December, the NFL argued to a federal judge that U.S. labor law pre-empted the pair's state claims. The judge dismissed some aspects of their lawsuit but left others up to the state court, a part of the ruling the NFL has appealed.
News: Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said Saturday that he'll use all 11 starters for at least the first half against the Texans. That includes veteran defensive tackle Pat Williams, who was held out of the first two games for extra rest, and defensive end Jared Allen, who sat out of Minnesota's last preseason game with a sprained ankle.
Analysis: We should see quite a matchup between the Vikings and Texans when Houston has the ball. We should also see the Vikings defense as one of the best in the league thanks to their awesome run defense, pass rush and ballhawking secondary. Throw in an improved return game with the selection of rookie Percy Harvin and their easy schedule and you see why we like this DST as a No. 1 option worth a late-round pick.
News: Vikings special teams coordinator Brian Murphy on WR Percy Harvin, who didn't return punts or kicks at Florida, but will now: "For him, it's just about reps. He has the ability to catch punts and kicks. The preseason will tell a lot."
Analysis: We still expect Harvin to play a significant role for the Vikings on offense, but this was expected that he would also help on special teams. In leagues that reward points for return yards, Harvin should be a good sleeper option. And his speed should make the Vikings DST and ST that much better.
News: Vikings linemen Kevin and Pat Williams still don't know if they'll be suspended by the NFL in their dispute over its anti-doping policy, but the fight won't be in state court any time soon - if at all. Hennepin County Judge Gary Larson put state court proceedings in the case on hold Wednesday, pending a decision from a federal court. He said a state trial during the 2009 season was unlikely. Larson granted the NFL's request to hold off until the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs in. That panel hears arguments Aug. 18 in St. Paul. The players, who are not related, are not accused of taking steroids. They tested positive last summer for a banned diuretic that can mask the presence of steroids after taking the weight-loss supplement StarCaps. The diuretic, bumetanide, wasn't listed on the label. The NFL wants to suspend the players for four games each. "I just want it to be over," Pat Williams said at practice in Mankato. "If they're going to suspend me, they'll suspend me. If they ain't, they ain't. I'm just tired of it dragging and keeping going because you don't want to keep it over your head, your family's head, your teammate's head, your coach's head, your owner's head."
Analysis: The players wanted swift resolution so the suspensions wouldn't hang over them during the upcoming season, which begins with a Sept. 13 game at Cleveland. After the Williamses sued to fight the suspensions announced last December, the NFL argued to a federal judge that U.S. labor law pre-empted the pair's state claims. The judge dismissed some aspects of their lawsuit but left others up to the state court, a part of the ruling the NFL has appealed. Until you hear about the 'Williams Wall' getting suspended, figure them to play. They're a big key in the success of the Minnesota run defense and pass rush, and they're part of the reason why the Vikings DST is worth a late-round pick in drafts as a No. 1 option.
News: If the waiting is the hardest part, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams haven't shown it. The Minnesota Vikings and their stalwart defensive tackles are still seeking resolution to their fight against the NFL's attempt to issue them a four-game suspension for use of the now-infamous weight-loss supplement StarCaps. More than eight months after news of their positive tests first broke, the Williamses find themselves in continued limbo. "I just keep on praying on it. That's all I'm going to do. Whatever happens happens," Pat Williams said after Tuesday's training camp practice, teasing Adrian Peterson on his way off the field about all the kids screaming for the running back's autograph. Hopefully it will be over soon, and we can move on," Kevin Williams said. "I'm not going to even worry about it." The state judge involved in the case has said he'll decide this week whether to put the players' lawsuit on hold at the league's request, while a federal appeals court considers other issues including input from other major sports. The NFL wants the suspensions, originally handed out last season, to start with Minnesota's opener on Sept. 13, but the league would rather the federal appeals be resolved first before further proceedings at the state level to avoid conflicting rulings. The players' attorney is pushing for a trial before the regular season begins on Sept. 13; if that's not possible, they want it delayed again until the season is over.
Analysis: Kevin Williams is once again worth a late-round as a top-end No. 1 Fantasy DL. Pat Williams is still nothing more than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire in-season. Still, the Vikings DST would definitely suffer without them so stay tuned to the latest.
News: Minnesota Vikings middle linebacker E.J. Henderson is healthy and ready to pick up where he left off when he was injured in the fourth week of last season. Henderson was playing the best football of his career when he tore ligaments in his left big toe and dislocated another one in a loss to Tennessee. He missed the final 12 games of the season and the playoff loss to Philadelphia. Henderson had surgery to repair the ligament damage and says he is feeling fine, with training camp under way. On the first day, the quiet leader pulled the defense together and encouraged them to practice at a championship level. That rare speech from Henderson inspired the veteran unit, which has set a goal of being the No. 1 defense in the league.
Analysis: Having a healthy Henderson will definitely go a long way to helping the Vikings in their goal. Henderson can be a tackle machine and is definitely a high-end Fantasy IDP option in Fantasy play. The Vikings are a solid No. 1 Fantasy DST unit this season.
News: The Vikings signed Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield to a five-year deal that includes $16 million in guaranteed money. Winfield was heading into the final year of his contract and the sometimes contentious negotiations broke off at one point during the summer. It was starting to look bad when he skipped the team's optional workouts this summer and also missed a mandatory minicamp in June. The problem, according to Winfield's agent, was the uniqueness of this deal. Winfield is 32 years old and heading into his 11th season in the NFL, which is typically the beginning of the end of a career for a cornerback. "We just had a tough time putting this thing together because we didn't have anything to go by," agent Ashanti Webb said.
Analysis: Obviously, locking up Winfield helps their secondary out a bunch as he cashes in on being involved with their solid pass rush and run defense. This helps the Vikings as a unit as well, keeping them as a No. 1 DST option worth a late-round choice in drafts this summer.
News: A judge on Thursday blocked the NFL's plan to suspend Minnesota Vikings linemen Kevin Williams and Pat Williams for violating the league's anti-doping policy, a move their attorney said should let them start the season.
Analysis: Hennepin County District Judge Gary Larson granted the players' request for a temporary restraining order that keeps the NFL from suspending them until their case is decided. The order also prohibits the league from subjecting them to extra drug testing. The Williamses "would suffer a significant loss of playing time" without the restraining order, the judge wrote, and they have shown "some likelihood" of winning their lawsuit. Peter Ginsberg, an attorney for the two players, called the order a "major victory" and said that at a minimum it should allow them to play for the early part of the upcoming season. Kevin Williams is once again worth a late-round as a top-end No. 1 Fantasy DL. Pat Williams is still nothing more than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire in-season. The Vikings DST remains a No. 1 option as a late-round pick with this news obviously giving them a boost.
News: A federal judge has dismissed most of the claims by two Vikings stars facing suspension over their positive test for a banned diuretic. U.S. District Judge Paul A. Magnuson on Friday remanded two of the claims by Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams to state court. But Magnuson threw out most of the Williamses' claims and dismissed a lawsuit brought by the NFL players union on behalf of the Williamses and three Saints players also facing suspension. Attorneys for the union and the Williamses argued that league officials knew a supplement called StarCaps contained a banned diuretic back in 2006 and did not specifically notify players. But the judge agreed with the NFL that players are responsible for what is in their bodies.
Analysis: The Williamses again face a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy. Expect the Vikings defense to take a huge hit without that duo stuffing the run early on in the year against the Browns, Lions, 49ers and Packers. The Vikings DST remains a No. 1 option as a late-round pick.
News: The Vikings defense didn't look especially dominant against the visiting Eagles in Sunday's Wild Card playoff game. It allowed 26 points on 350 yards, though it did record three sacks and one interception. It also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Vikings DST caught fire at the end of the season and solidified its place as a No. 1 unit in Fantasy. It knows how to stop the run, and that shouldn't change next year. Expect to draft it as a No. 1 option once again.
News: Coach Brad Childress said Monday that Vikings DT Pat Williams will "try to make that push to this weekend" but was noncommittal about whether the three-time Pro Bowl pick would be able to suit up for the Eagles game on Sunday. Williams, who had a four-game suspension for a banned diuretic tabled earlier this month in court, broke a bone in his right shoulder against Arizona on Dec. 14. He was clearly missed the last two weeks, particularly in Sunday's 20-19 win over New York in which the Giants rushed for 135 yards.
Analysis: If Williams returns, that will greatly help the Vikings in their quest to beat the Eagles and advance in the postseason. We like the Vikings DST as a No. 1 unit in playoff leagues and a low-end No. 1 option in league play next year.
News: The Vikings needed a win to clinch their division and host a playoff game in Week 17 against a Giants squad that had nothing to play for. They got it, winning 20-19 and advancing into the postseason. The DST didn't add much, getting two sacks in the game against the super-efficient Giants.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is still a No. 1 option in playoff Fantasy formats. In 2009, they'll be a No. 1 option again, but not the best in football.
News: The Vikings defense allowed the Falcons 24 points on only 222 yards Week 16 in Minnesota. However, it recorded only two sacks.
Analysis: The Vikings DST had a solid performance yardage-wise, but its offense killed it with turnovers. The Vikings DST remains a unit dominant enough to start in Fantasy more often than not, but its matchup Week 17 against the Giants makes it a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams will miss anywhere from two to six weeks with a fractured shoulder, a big blow to a Vikings defense that is second in the NFL against the run. Williams was hurt Sunday in a 35-14 rout of Arizona. Backup Fred Evans will get most of the snaps in Williams' place. Williams, playing amid a federal injunction related to an NFL suspension for violating the league's steroid policy, is the emotional leader and chief run stopper on the line. The Vikings face the two best rushing teams in the league in Atlanta and the New York Giants in the final two games of the season as they push for the playoffs. Coach Brad Childress says he is holding out hope that Williams will be ready if the Vikings qualify for the playoffs.
Analysis: This hurts the value of the Vikings DST, especially as they prepare for Michael Turner in Week 16 and the Giants in Week 17. Consider them still a good enough DST for now, but you might want to check the waiver wire for potential replacements before finalizing your lineup.
News: The Vikings allowed 316 yards and 14 points in Week 15 at Arizona. Bernard Berrian scored on a 82-yard punt return and QB Kurt Warner was sacked four times in the game. The Vikings also forced two turnovers.
Analysis: The Vikings did such a good job of stuffing the run that the Cardinals ran the ball just seven times in the game. They bounced back from a weak showing against the Lions and this came against a good offensive team with plenty of aerial weapons. For Week 16 at home against a playoff opponent like Atlanta, consider them an option in leagues of 12-plus teams.
News: A Minnesota judge has extended his preliminary injunction against the NFL's suspension of five players for violating the league's anti-doping policy. In his ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson asked both parties to propose a schedule by Dec. 22 to file pleadings in the case. That means the players are cleared to play for at least the next two weeks and probably through the rest of the regular season and postseason. Kevin Williams and Pat Williams of the Minnesota Vikings and Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the New Orleans Saints were suspended last week for four games each. They tested positive for a banned diuretic in the dietary supplement StarCaps. The union argued the NFL didn't properly inform players about what it knew about the product. The NFL's attorneys argued that claim, and others, had been considered and rejected in a process set out by the league's collective bargaining agreement.
Analysis: The Vikings DST should greatly benefit from this as neither defensive tackle isn't expected to miss any time. For Fantasy owners, this means that the DST remains a good option for the rest of the way, even worth at least a look at Arizona in Week 15.
News: Word could come any time that Minnesota's standout defensive tackles, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, and valuable New Orleans veterans running back Deuce McAllister and defensive end Will Smith, are back to being suspended. They tested positive for a controversial diuretic banned by the league, but the players union is fighting the punishments in court. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson said he wouldn't rule on the case until he could properly digest all the information submitted by lawyers for both sides. He didn't set a timeline for himself.
Analysis: Kevin Williams gets enough sacks to make him a No. 2 Fantasy DL while Pat Williams is more of a low-end option. Their potential suspensions would have an even bigger impact on the Vikings DST, though, which might not look nearly so dominant without them. The Vikings already have a tough matchup Week 15 at Arizona, so keep an eye on this situation.
News: Minnesota needed a touchdown and a field goal in the 4th quarter just to defeat the win-less Detroit Lions, 20-16 on Sunday of Week 14. The Vikings DST, which played with his vaunted Williams Wall, limited the Lions to 267 yards in the game but allowed Daunte Culpepper to have his best game of the season. The Lions did not turn the ball over all game but the Vikings did sack Culpepper four times. Jared Allen had two of them.
Analysis: Minnesota's DST didn't look very good against the hapless Lions and since they play at Arizona, a very good offense, in Week 15, we only consider them a No. 2 Fantasy DST for that week.
News: A federal judge on Friday blocked the NFL from suspending five players for violating the league's anti-doping policy. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson said he needed more time to consider the case after hearing several hours of arguments from the league and the NFL Players Association. Kevin Williams and Pat Williams of the Vikings and Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the Saints were suspended this week for four games each for testing positive for a banned diuretic in the dietary supplement StarCaps. The union argued the NFL didn't properly inform players about the substance. The NFL's attorneys argued that that claim, and others, had been considered and rejected in a process set out by the league's collective bargaining agreement.
Analysis: Obviously, this improves the value of the Vikings DST significantly since Pat and Kevin Williams are key parts of the defense's plight to shut down the run. Reconsider this unit as a No. 1 option unless things change again in the case, which isn't expected at this time.
News: The Williams wall isn't the only part of Minnesota's front four that might be missing this week. Vikings coach Brad Childress confirmed backup defensive end Brian Robison had arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday. Robison left last Sunday's game against the Bears for a brief time after getting hurt, but he later returned after limping off the field. Childress declined to declare Robison out for this week's game against winless Detroit, saying "people heal differently." Robison is an end by trade, but has played inside some this season. Star defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams were suspended for four games Tuesday by the NFL for testing positive for violating the league's anti-doping policy. The Vikings did add veteran DT Jimmy Kennedy, a run stuffer, to their roster on Wednesday.
Analysis: The Vikings DST was useful not only because of its solid secondary and very good pass rush, led by Jared Allen, but also because of the defensive tackles up front for them. Teams had a hard time running on Minnesota because Pat and Kevin Williams were clogging up the line of scrimmage. They will now likely be replaced by Fred Evans and Ellis Wyms, who have been serviceable defensive linemen in the past but not nearly as effective as the Williamses. The Vikings DST still carries massive value for Week 14 because they play against the Lions, but forget about them after this week as they'll face the Cardinals, Falcons and Giants to end the season.
News: On Tuesday afternoon, the NFL announced the suspensions for six players who violated the NFL's Policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances. Those players are Saints RB Deuce McAllister, DE Will Smith and DT Charles Grant, Vikings DTs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams and Texans LS Bryan Pittman. All of these players are suspended through the end of the NFL's 2008 regular season and are eligible to return for the playoffs this year if their team advances that far. In a statement, the NFL said that "the players specifically violated a longstanding provision of the policy relating to the use of diuretics and water pills, which serve as masking agents for steroids and are potentially dangerous to the health of players. The policy states that the use of so-called 'blocking' or 'masking' agents, including diuretics and water pills, is prohibited and that a positive test will not be excused because it results from the use of a dietary supplement that unknowingly contained a banned substance. Supplements are not regulated or monitored by the government and players have been warned about the risks of supplement use."
News: The Vikings DST had three interceptions and three sacks Sunday against Chicago. Jared Allen had all three sacks, and Ben Leber, Darren Sharper and Benny Sapp had the interceptions. Darius Reynaud had two kickoff returns for 62 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has a great matchup in Week 14 at Detroit, so consider the unit a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Vikings DE Jared Allen (shoulder) and FS Madieu Williams (shoulder) were both limited in practice Friday but are listed as probable for Week 13 vs. the Bears. Both are expected to play at this point.
Analysis: Both of these guys will help the Vikings DST play big in Week 13 against a Bears offense with a good running game but an inconsistent pass attack in recent weeks. Treat this unit as a No. 1 option for Week 13.
News: The Vikings DST scored on a fumble recovery on the first play of the game, recorded four sacks, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and held the Jaguars to 12 points (two by a safety) in a Week 12 win at Jacksonville.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has had a quiet year so far, but maybe this is the game that really gets them going again. They will go back home to host the Bears in Week 13 and deserve to remain as a serviceable No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams rejoined the team Friday after a day away to attend doping hearings at NFL headquarters. Both players declined comment on their appeals of a positive test for a weight loss diuretic considered a masking agent for steroids. Angelo Wright, the agent for Pat Williams, says he expects to learn the league's decision the first week in December. The Williamses are facing possible four-game suspensions. Coach Brad Childress said both players were "bright eyed and bushy tailed" on Friday despite the long day.
Analysis: Both players are vital to the success of the Vikings run defense, which will take on the Jaguars in Week 12. Because Jacksonville's offense has run hot and cold, figure that the Vikings DST is good enough to start in most Fantasy leagues.
News: Minnesota Vikings star DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams have gone before the NFL to discuss their positive test for a banned diuretic. The Williamses were absent from practice Thursday to attend a hearing at the league office in New York. They face four-game suspensions if their appeal is denied. Angelo Wright, the agent for Pat Williams, said he believed it would be another week before they learn of the decision. Pat Williams has not missed a game since he played for Buffalo in 2001, when a leg injury sidelined him for the last three weeks. Kevin Williams has started 90 of a possible 92 games since he was drafted by Minnesota in 2003. He missed two games due to a sprained knee in 2005.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Kevin and Pat Williams because if they are out, it would severely hamper what the Vikings DST is capable of doing. It sounds like both will play in Week 12 at Jacksonville so keep them active.
News: Vikings defensive linemen Kevin and Pat Williams met with NFL officials Monday to appeal their suspensions after testing positive for a weight-loss diuretic considered a masking agent for steroids. Both are subject to four-game suspensions. One of the grounds for the players' appeal was that they simply were taking the product to reach prescribed weight standards. However, the NFL policy states: "The use of so-called 'blocking' or 'masking' agents is prohibited by this policy. These include diuretics or water pills, which have been used in the past by some players to reach an assigned weight. Players are responsible for what is in their bodies."
Analysis: If the Vikings are forced to play several games without either or both players, their run defense will struggle, not to mention their pass rush. We'll keep you posted, but if the Vikings will be without them in Week 12 when they play at Jacksonville, you can expect the Jaguars to come running at the Purple People Eaters.
News: The Vikings DST held the Buccaneers to only 19 points in Week 11, but did give up 363 yards of offense and only forced one turnover, a fumble recovery, in a loss. They were also held to just one sack.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is still clearly a serviceable Fantasy unit, but they haven't played up to their stellar level from last season. In Week 12 they visit Jacksonville, who don't have one of the best offenses in the world, so this would be a chance for the Vikes to show what they can do. They remain a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for now.
News: Vikings safety Madieu Williams is doubtful for Sunday's game with a shoulder injury that limited him in practice this week. Coach Brad Childress said Friday that Williams' condition is unrelated to the neck problem that kept him out of the first seven games of the season. Williams was hurt Wednesday when he fell hard on his shoulder during the special teams portion of practice. Williams said it was "one of those freak deals." Rookie Tyrell Johnson will likely play in his place. Last week, Childress listed defensive end Jared Allen as doubtful with a shoulder injury, but Allen suited up and played well against Green Bay. Allen is listed as questionable this week.
Analysis: The Vikings have been good enough against the pass without Williams so far this season, and they should continue to spark a pass rush with Allen coming after the QB. With the Bucs' run game hampered by injuries and being split among three players, figure that the Vikings DST does a good enough job. Consider them a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in Week 11.
News: The Vikings DST got two safeties Sunday against Green Bay with four sacks. The Vikings defense only allowed 13 points with two touchdowns for the Packers coming on defensive scores. It helped for the Vikings that Jared Allen played through his shoulder injury and recorded a sack. On special teams, Aundrae Allison led the way with one kickoff return for 22 yards and two punt returns for 17 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST remains a No. 1 option in all leagues. Start them in Week 11 at Tampa Bay and hope for more safeties and turnovers.
News:Jared Allen got a double dose of bad news Friday. Minnesota's star defensive end was fined a whopping $50,000 by the NFL for two below-the-knee hits on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub last week. Allen also learned he was listed as doubtful on the injury report for the upcoming game against rival Green Bay. Brian Robison will start in Allen's place if he can't go. Allen declined to discuss the fine due to his desire to appeal the punishment, and his agent Ken Harris also refrained from comment. Schaub and Texans coach Gary Kubiak this week each called the hit that injured the quarterback's left knee a cheap shot. Last month, Allen was docked $5,000 by the league for a late hit against Chicago.
Analysis: Allen was a limited participant in Friday's practice, but his sprained right shoulder still has plenty of healing to do. Vikings coach Brad Childress said he wouldn't decide whether Allen would play Sunday until shortly before kickoff. Allen reiterated it wasn't his call. "They're not going to put me in a position to damage my arm," he said. The fact Allen is listed as doubtful for Week 10 is not a good sign, so consider using healthier alternatives. Minnesota's fourth-round draft pick last year, Robison had 4 1/2 sacks as a rookie. While Allen was ailing during most of last week's game, Robison totaled four tackles, one quarterback hurry and one pass defensed. Robison has essentially been the primary backup at both end spots, behind Allen and Ray Edwards. Consider Robison a possible bye-week Fantasy replacement in IDP leagues. The Vikings DST still remains a viable Fantasy option without Allen.
News: Vikings DE Jared Allen did not practice Wednesday with a shoulder injury, reports the Pioneer Press. If his shoulder injury is a third-degree sprain, then his chances of playing Sunday against Green Bay seem to be a longshot. In fact, he could be out several games, given the physical nature of his position.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Allen and hope he is OK. When healthy, he is a No. 1 DL in IDP leagues, and he makes a huge impact on the Vikings DST. Continue to monitor his status during the week to see if he can play against the Packers.
News: Minnesota could be without defensive end Jared Allen for this weekend's game against Green Bay. Allen suffered a sprained right shoulder in Sunday's win over Houston, an injury he played through, and managed two of the team's five sacks. Afterward, Allen dismissed any concern about his condition by saying, "It's football. You get beat up." But Vikings coach Brad Childress said Monday he's not sure if the 2007 All-Pro will be able to recover in time to play the arch-rival Packers. Allen is tied for the team lead with Kevin Williams with seven sacks in eight games.
Analysis: The Vikings' matchup against a good Packers offense in Week 10 is going to be tough if they don't have Allen coming off the edge and hunting Aaron Rodgers. If Allen is out, you might want to consider other options in Week 10.
News: The Vikings allowed 389 total yards of offense in Week 9 against Houston. They allowed 21 points, but six came when a Gus Frerotte pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. They picked up five sacks in the game and forced three turnovers.
Analysis: The Vikings did not have much trouble with starting QB Matt Schaub in the first half, but they took some time to adjust to backup Sage Rosenfels in the second half. They did not allow much in the way of a running game as usual and the sacks and turnovers made up for the yards they gave up in most formats. Continue to view them as a must-start Fantasy defense for Week 10 against the rival Packers.
News: Vikings coach Brad Childress is planning on Pro Bowl defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams playing in Sunday's game against Houston. Childress had no comment Monday on a Fox Sports report that the two Williamses have tested positive for one of the NFL's banned substances. That would mean a four-game suspension pending appeal. The league's policy is supposed to be confidential, so coaches and the NFL cannot comment. Childress called the situation "a personal issue." He says the Vikings won't let it be a distraction.
Analysis: Without these defensive tackles up front, the Vikings defense would be punchless against the run. With them, they've done a good job stopping running backs from getting lots of yardage, but they have yielded seven touchdowns on the ground already this year. Assuming all stays hunky-dory with the Vikings, including the return of safety Madieu Williams, consider them a middle-end starting unit as they host the Texans' explosive offense in Week 9.
News: The Vikings are anticipating safety Madieu Williams's return to the field after their bye week, a long-delayed debut after signing a lucrative contract with the team on the first day of free agency. The Vikings made Williams one of the highest-paid players at his position by giving him a six-year deal worth as much as $33 million with at least $12 million guaranteed, but he developed a nerve problem in his neck in early August and has needed 2 1/2 months to work back. Williams said he expects to play Nov. 2 against the Houston Texans, though in what role remains unclear. "That's the mindset going forward," he said. "Until something else changes between now and then, that's the approach I'm going to take."
Analysis: Williams would improve a Vikings pass defense ranked 19th in the NFL. The Vikings DST should be benched in Week 8 since they're on bye. Get them active following the bye.
News: Minnesota fell to division rival Chicago, 48-41, in Week 7. These two teams were supposed to have good defenses. The Vikings DST allowed Chicago to rack up 327 yards of offense in the game and the last time Chicago scored this many points, Walter Payton was their running back. Minnesota forced just one Bears turnover, which came on a fumble.
Analysis: The Vikings are known for their great rush defense and they did limit Bears RB Matt Forte to just 56 yards on 20 carries. They allowed far too many points to a team not known for their offense, however. They have not been the No. 1 Fantasy DST that many Fantasy owners drafted them to be but remain a decent start in most weeks. They should not be starting in Week 8, however, as the Vikings have a bye.
News: The Vikings allowed just 212 yards and 10 points in Week 6 vs. Detroit. They forced one turnover and sacked QB Dan Orlovsky six times in the game, including four sacks by Kevin Williams. Orlovsky also ran out of his own end zone to give Minnesota a safety in the first half.
Analysis: This game was a knock down, drag out ball game in the first half with the score 3-2 after 30 minutes of play. The Vikings defense handled a very uninspiring Lions offense with ease and finally looked like the upper level Fantasy unit most Fantasy owners drafted them to be. Consider them a good start for Week 7 at Chicago.
News: The Vikings allowed 17 second-half points Week 5 against the Saints and survived two punt returns for touchdowns by RB Reggie Bush to squeak out a 30-27 win. The Vikings defense allowed just one offensive touchdown -- a 17-yard reception by Devery Henderson in the first quarter -- and even scored a touchdown on a 59-yard return by Antoine Winfield after a blocked field goal. New Orleans posted 375 yards, 320 passing, while Minnesota got one sack, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Outside of poor special teams play, the Vikings did a pretty good job bottling up Drew Brees and the Saints offense Week 5. They really needed a spirited effort after learning LB E.J. Henderson will be out for the season with a foot injury. Minnesota still has a lot of talent on defense and the Vikings DST can be considered a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 6 against the Lions.
News: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings LB E.J. Henderson has been placed on injured reserve. He was originally supposed to miss only a month with dislocated toes.
Analysis: The Vikings needed to make a move Monday to clear room for Bryant McKinnie's return from suspension, but not many folks saw this one coming. Henderson can rack up the tackles when healthy, but should now be cut in all seasonal IDP leagues.
News: The Vikings DST was very unimpressive in their Week 4 loss at Tennessee. They didn't record one sack, force one fumble or intercept one pass. They were able to recover a fumble.
Analysis: Awful week for a DST expected to deliver big stats week in and week out. They'll also have their hands full at New Orleans in Week 5. We might be at the point soon where the Vikings DST is not a worthy startable DST in Fantasy.
News: Vikings DB Antoine Winfield recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown Sunday against Carolina in a 20-10 Minnesota victory. The Vikings also had five sacks and recovered two fumbles. Chester Taylor had two kickoff returns for 44 yards, and Aundrae Allison had two punt returns for no yards. Chad Greenway, Kevin Williams and Jared Allen accounted for the sacks.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is a dominant unit and will continue to play well in Week 4 at the Titans. Consider the Vikings a No. 1 option in Week 4.
News: The Vikings DST had two interceptions and two sacks Sunday against the Colts in an 18-15 loss. The Vikings allowed 321 yards. Aundrae Allison had one kickoff return for 12 yards and Chester Taylor had three kickoff returns for 93 yards. Allison also had one punt return for 27 yards.
Analysis: The Vikings DST will continue to be productive and should be considered a No. 1 option in Week 3 against Carolina.
News: The Vikings strength in 2007 was their defense. Well, they couldn't help the team much in a Week 1, 24-19 loss to the Packers. Green Bay not only scored three touchdowns, but put 317 total yards on the board, including 139 on the ground. Minnesota had no sacks and couldn't force any turnovers.
Analysis: The Packers offensive line did a great job keeping QB Aaron Rodgers standing upright and even shutdown DL Jared Allen. Minnesota was missing DB Madieu Williams, but they are still deep enough to make up for his absence. It was not a good Week 1 for Minnesota and Week 2 could also be a little rough against Peyton Manning and the Colts. You should probably start the Vikings DST since you probably drafted them so high, but don't be surprised if the Colts drop some points on Minnesota.
News: The Vikings allowed 12 points and 281 yards of total offense in their preseason game against Pittsburgh Saturday. They recovered two fumbles and picked up four sacks.
Analysis: Week 3 of the preseason is considered a dress rehearsal because it is the only week in which team's gameplan and leave their regulars in for any significant amount of time. All in all, it was a solid performance by the defensive unit currently ranked first overall in most scoring formats in Fantasy. They've taken some hits to their defensive line, but while they don't have tremendous depth they do boast some top-of-the line starters in Kevin and Pat Williams. We still feel the Vikings will have a good defense in 2008 despite some key losses, so continue to view them as high-end DST unit.
News: The Minnesota Vikings placed defensive tackle Kenderick Allen on injured reserve on Monday in another hit to their already thin defensive line. Allen injured his right wrist in the preseason opener against Seattle and will miss the season. He was signed in the offseason as a free agent from Green Bay to provide depth behind starting tackles Kevin and Pat Williams.
Analysis: The defensive line also lost end Jayme Mitchell (knee) for the season in the Seahawks game and has been without Kenechi Udeze while he undergoes treatment for leukemia. End Brian Robison also has missed significant time after having surgery to repair a varicose vein in his leg, though he hopes to be back by the regular-season opener at Green Bay. Allen's injury leaves the Vikings with veterans Fred Evans and Ellis Wyms and rookies Letroy Guion and Leger Douzable behind both Williams. Allen had no Fantasy value in IDP leagues so he will be hardly missed. However, the Vikings DST heads into the 2008 season as the No. 1 option in all of Fantasy at the position, so losing another key player doesn't help their cause. We still feel the Vikings will have a good defense in 2008 despite some key losses, so continue to view them as a viable DST.
News: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings FS Madieu Williams will miss up to six weeks with a neck injury, depleting the club's secondary. Williams is not expected to suit up again this preseason. Rookie safety Tyrell Johnson, who the Vikings traded up for in the 2008 draft, will see time on the field in Williams' place.
Analysis: Minnesota's defense has taken some early hits this preseason, losing reserves LB Heath Farwell and DE Jayme Mitchell for the season. But so long as their starters remain healthy and active, this is the premier Fantasy DST out there. DE Jared Allen should rack up the sacks working with DT behemoths Pat Williams and Kevin Williams, and LB Chad Greenway, SS Darren Sharper and CB Antoine Winfield highlight the rest of the defense. The Vikings DST will be gone between Rounds 8 and 10 in all drafts this summer.
News:The Pioneer Press reports that Vikings linebacker Heath Farwell suffered what is believed to be a season-ending knee injury Friday in the first quarter of the team's 34-17 preseason loss to Seattle. Farwell suffered the injury with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter of Friday's game at the end of a 7-yard run by Seahawks running back T.J. Duckett.
Analysis: Farwell isn't expected to produce enough stats to warrant Fantasy use even when healthy. Certainly he should be ignored if he's going to miss the entire season. If the injury is season-ending, as expected, the loss would be a major blow to the Vikings' special teams. Farwell led the team in special-teams tackles each of the past two seasons, and his 32 special-teams tackles last season were tied for third-most in franchise history. He set a Vikings record with seven special-teams tackles against the New York Giants and became the first player in team history to recover two onside kicks in a season.
News: The Chiefs reportedly have traded Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to the Vikings. Citing a source, the Kansas City Star reported that Allen went to Minnesota on Tuesday night to sign a six-year contract worth just under $74 million with more than $31 million guaranteed, the most ever for a defensive player. The Chiefs are expected to get the Vikings' first-round pick (No. 17) and both the Vikings' third-round selections (73rd and 82nd). It would give the Chiefs six picks in the first 82 players in this weekend's draft and 13 total. NFL Network also confirms the trade. Allen led the NFL last season with 15 1/2 sacks.
Analysis: So now the best run-stuffing defense in the NFL adds a sick pass rusher who should bring at least a dozen sacks. Coupled with a good secondary that added FS Madieu Williams this offseason and a budding kick-return game, the Vikings DST is now the best Fantasy option available. Expect them to fly off draft boards with a middle- to late-round pick this summer.
News: The Vikings released veteran safety Dwight Smith, ending his tenure in Minnesota's defensive backfield with Darren Sharper. But the club will also go into this offseason with Mike Doss and Tank Williams as free agents, leaving them with just Sharper -- a veteran DB with a year left on his contract -- as their only reliable safety. The Vikings ranked 32nd against the pass in 2007.
Analysis: And while they were rough against the pass, they were smashing against the run. In fact, teams passed more on Minnesota than any other club thanks to their awesome run-stuffing defense. Minnesota totaled 38 sacks, 27 fumble recoveries, 15 interceptions and eight defensive touchdowns. Led by DTs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams and an underrated LB corps starring Chad Greenway and E.J. Henderson, the Vikings defense is expected to be a top-five unit in 2008 if they can replenish their safeties properly. Figure them to be drafted with a pick between Rounds 9 and 13 this summer.
News: The Vikings continued to be a strong defensive unit in 2007, ranking No. 1 against the run and No. 32 against the pass. However, teams passed more on Minnesota than any other club thanks to their awesome run-stuffing defense. Minnesota totaled 38 sacks, 27 fumble recoveries, 15 interceptions and eight defensive touchdowns.
Analysis: Led by DTs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams, an underrated LB corps starring Chad Greenway and E.J. Henderson and a good secondary despite ranking 32nd, the Vikings defense is expected to be a top-five unit in 2008. Figure them to be drafted with a pick between Rounds 9 and 13 this summer.
News: The Vikings DST allowed 362 yards to Denver as Minnesota ended their season with a 22-19 overtime loss to the Broncos on Sunday afternoon. They didn't force a turnover and totaled only one sack on the day.
Analysis: After nice outings in Weeks 12-15, the Vikings really limped to the finish line with poor efforts in Week 16 and 17. Despite the late slump, the Vikings remain one of the better units in the league and will be drafted in most leagues heading into the 2008 season.
News: The Vikings were forced to play without top DB Antoine Winfield (shoulder) Week 16 against the Redskins and his loss was felt on the field. Washington managed 367 yards, including 261 through the air, during a 32-21 win. The Vikings forced zero turnovers and managed just two sacks.
Analysis: For those 84 percent of Fantasy owners that started the Vikings DST, we feel sorry for you. Minnesota has been a pretty good defensive unit all season, but stunk up the joint without Winfield Week 16. The sad thing is that they were facing a backup QB in Todd Collins. Minnesota will look for a better effort Week 17 against the Broncos, but Denver does have a top 10 offense. The Vikings DST is a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Vikings defense allowed only 13 points on 209 yards Week 15 against the Bears. It also recorded an interception and a sack. The Vikings special teams, meanwhile, picked up 83 yards.
Analysis: The limited yardage did enough to make up for the lack of sacks and interceptions, and the Vikings DST will have another good matchup Week 16 against the Redskins, especially if Todd Collins starts again at quarterback. Keep it active in Fantasy.
News: Even with rookie sensation Adrian Peterson completely shut down by the 49ers, the Minnesota Vikings were in good hands as soon as Kevin Williams got his big mitts on the ball. The Vikings' 311-pound defensive lineman returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play in the Vikings' fourth consecutive victory, a 27-7 win over hapless San Francisco Week 14. The Vikings defense gave the 49ers fits all day. San Francisco only mustered up 284 yards and that came as QB Trent Dilfer led the team in the first half before giving way to Shaun Hill. Dilfer was knocked out of the game with a head injury in the second quarter. The Vikings forced five fumbles, recovering three. They had two sacks and two interceptions, including Williams' TD scamper.
Analysis: If you didn't start the Vikings DST against the worst offense in the NFL, shame on you. This was a matchup made perfect for Fantasy owners and the Vikings didn't disappoint. They dominated the 49ers from the get go. The Vikings DST continues to be a Fantasy friendly option and the good times might continue Week 15 against the Bears, who will have Brian Griese under center.
News: The Vikings DST will travel to San Francisco to face the Niners and their 32nd-ranked offense in Week 14.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is our favorite Fantasy matchup of the week with Trent Dilfer at QB for San Francisco. Get them active in all formats, despite the fact the Vikings have the worst-rated pass defense in the NFL.
News: The Vikings DST scored a touchdown Sunday against Detroit when Aundrae Allison had a 103-yard kickoff return. Allison had three kickoff returns for a 47.7-yard average. Mewelde Moore had one punt return for 10 yards. The Vikings also added three sacks and an interception and held Detroit to 10 points.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is a No. 1 option in Week 14 at San Francisco and should continue its recent hot play. They have now scored a defensive or special teams touchdown in two straight weeks.
News: The Vikings DST will face Mike Martz's high-flying passing offense of the Lions in Week 13 in Minnesota. The Lions have allowed 47 sacks so far this season, easily the highest in the NFL.
Analysis: The Vikings DST ranks 27th in the NFL, but they do have the top-rated rushing defense and they should be able to record a good number of sacks. Start this DST in all Fantasy leagues this week.
News: The Vikings returned three interceptions for touchdowns in Week 12 at the N.Y. Giants. They forced four turnovers -- all interceptions -- and picked up three sacks in the game. They allowed 17 points and 309 total yards.
Analysis: The Vikings defense came into the game with a reputation for having the worst pass defense in the leagues -- statistically, they did -- and they played like they wanted to end that notion on Sunday. They baffled Giants QB Eli Manning into making bad throws all game. They were also to maintain their dominance against the run, allowing just 75 ground yards. In Week 13, the Vikings will face a reeling Lions team that has allowed the most sacks in the NFL.
News: The Vikings DST will travel to East Meadowlands, N.J., Sunday to face the Giants' 15th-ranked offense.
Analysis: The Vikings DST ranks 11th in total defense, but we don't recommend starting them in this matchup. The Giants have a healthy Brandon Jacobs and Eli Manning should be able to tear apart one of the NFL's worst passing defenses.
News: The Vikings DST was awarded a safety and totaled four sacks, an interception and a forced fumble vs. Oakland in Week 11. They did allow over 300 passing yards to ex-Viking Daunte Culpepper.
Analysis: The Vikings DST continued to play well against the run and poorly against the pass, a trend that is expected to continue into Week 12 at the Giants. Steer clear of the Vikings defense next week.
News: Oakland's 24th-ranked offense will travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings Sunday in Week 11. The Raiders have allowed 27 sacks this season, which is an improvement from last year's numbers, but still pretty high.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is ranked 29th in total defense (32nd against the pass and third against the run). We recommend using this unit if you don't have one of the elite DSTs or a much better matchup.
News: The Vikings defense gave up 488 yards and a ton of points in Minnesota's 34-0 loss to the Packers in Week 10. They did not record a sack, an interception or a fumble recovery and did not get a chance to return a punt.
Analysis: Sunday was brutal for the Vikings who got torn apart by Brett Favre and Ryan Grant. However, they are still an OK unit and should definitely be worthy of some consideration in Week 11 against the sorry Raiders.
News: The Vikings DST held the Chargers to 229 total yards, forced one fumble recovery, made one sack and tallied one interception in Minnesota's 35-17 win over the Chargers in Week 9.
Analysis: Considering the Chargers had averaged almost 35 points a game over their last three contests, this was an excellent performance by the Vikings DST. They made Philip Rivers have his worst outing of the season and held LaDainian Tomlinson in check. They should be a reasonable start against the Packers in Week 10, although they will have to shore up the passing defense a little more against Brett Favre.
News: Minnesota hosts the San Diego Chargers in Week 9. While the Vikings DST ranks third against the rush, giving up only two rushing touchdowns all season, they rank last in the passing game, allowing 288.3 yards per game through the air.
Analysis: We don't recommend starting the Vikings DST in 12-team leagues for this coming week.
News: The Vikings DST totaled two sacks and had very few bright spots against an efficient and pass-heavy Eagles offense in Week 8. They did hold Brian Westbrook to under 50 yards rushing, but he did some damage through the air. Donovan McNabb passed for 333 yards in the Vikings' loss.
Analysis: The Vikings DST isn't a reliable option vs. San Diego in Week 9, either. The Chargers are developing into an offensive juggernaut and could post some big points in the game.
News: Philadelphia travels to face the Vikings DST in Minnesota on Sunday. The Eagles rank 8th in total offense, including 14th through the air and 12th on the ground.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is ranked 26th in total defense, but that's only because they are so bad against the pass (32nd). They are still tough against the run, allowing only 76.5 yards per game and only one rushing touchdown. Start them in Week 8 against the Eagles in all 12-team leagues.
News: The Vikings DST scored a touchdown Sunday against Dallas when Cedric Griffin returned a fumble for a score. The Vikings also recovered two fumbles and has three sacks. But the Vikings DST allowed its first rushing touchdown this season. Adrian Peterson had three kickoff returns for a 21.7-yard average, and Troy Williamson returned a kickoff for 13 yards. Bobby Wade had one punt return for 11 yards.
Analysis: Look for the Vikings DST to bounce back in Week 8 against the Eagles. Consider them a low-end No. 1 option.
News: The Vikings DST continues to have the worst passing defense in the NFL, although they are still solid against the run (second in the league). They'll travel to play Dallas in Week 7, who rank second in the NFL in total offense.
Analysis: QB Tony Romo has had his share of problems over the past couple weeks, but this is a tough matchup for the Vikings DST. We recommend them as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit for this weekend.
News: The Vikings got interceptions from DB Dwight Smith and LB Ben Leber in Week 6 at Chicago. DL Pat Williams and DB Antoine Winfield recovered fumbles. LB E.J. Henderson had 10 tackles and a forced fumble as well, but the Vikings still allowed 31 points and 458 yards of offense.
Analysis: The Vikings gave up 31 points, but seven of those points came off a punt return by Devin Hester. The Vikings D has been a very serviceable Fantasy unit all season and they continue to be one of the better teams against the run. In Week 7, however, the Vikings have a tough matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Consider them a mediocre option for that matchup.
News: Minnesota travels to Chicago in a Norris Division battle in Week 6. The Bears are the 30th-ranked offense in the NFL (27th on the ground and 28th through the air), and they have allowed 17 sacks (fourth-most in the league), with 10 interceptions (most in the NFL).
Analysis: The Vikings DST ranks 18th in total defense. They rank 30th against the pass, but they are still the top-rated unit against the run. They have yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season, and they give up only 62 yards per game on the ground. Get them active against this struggling offense in Week 6.
News: Cincinnati, Minnesota, Oakland and Philadelphia are all on bye weeks in Week 5.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season, and they have allowed just 62 yards rushing in four games, which ranks them first overall. But in the passing game, they have allowed 266.8 yards passing, ranking them 29th overall. Use them when the matchups are good because they will have plenty of sack and interception opportunities.
News: The Vikings DST totaled just one sack and two forced fumbles in a loss to the Packers at home in Week 4. While they crushed the Packers' run game, Brett Favre threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns.
Analysis: The Vikings are on bye in Week 5 but play at Chicago in Week 6. Assuming the Bears offense continues to struggle, use the Vikings DST as a starting unit that week.
News: Minnesota will host Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in Week 4. The Vikings currently rank 11th in total defense, with a solid third-ranked rushing defense, and a 20th-ranked passing defense.
Analysis: The Vikings DST does have 11 sacks, which ranks third in the NFL, and they have already scored three defensive touchdowns. They have allowed just 36 points total in three games played, which ranks them fourth in scoring defense. Keep this unit active, despite the fact they are playing a red-hot gunner in Favre.
News: While the Vikings have struggled for the most part on offense, the same can't be said for their defense. The Vikings D had another solid effort Week 3 against the Chiefs, limiting K.C. to 251 yards and 13 points. They sacked QB Damon Huard once and could not force an interception, but did recover a fumble.
Analysis: The Vikings defense did a great job bottling up Chiefs RB Larry Johnson. They held him to 42 yards in 24 carries. The Vikings D has emerged as an elite Fantasy DST and can be started in most leagues. Minnesota hosts Green Bay in Week 4 and the Packers might be the first team to pose a problem for the Vikings D. Keep that in mind.
News: The Vikings DST has started out hot. They have three defensive touchdowns, 10 sacks, five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Now they get the Chiefs, who have scored just 13 points this year, and QB Damon Huard has three interceptions already.
Analysis: The Vikings are owned in 15 percent more leagues now than they were at the start of the year, and for good reason. They should feast on the Chiefs on Sunday and give their owners a third straight big week.
News: While most NFL defenses would have trouble dealing with an upcoming matchup with RB Larry Johnson, the Vikings won't be sweating it. That's because the Vikings defense ranks sixth against the run this season and have yet to allow a rushing touchdown. The Vikings will play in a difficult environment -- Arrowhead Stadium -- in Week 3, but the Chiefs rank 28th in total offense this season, averaging 6.5 points per game so far.
Analysis: Week 3 sees a lot of decent defenses with tough matchups, but this isn't one of them. If you can get your claws on the Vikings DST for Week 3, do it and start them.
News: The Vikings gave up 415 yards in extended play Week 2 at Detroit, but they also collected five turnovers, including two fumbles and three interceptions. They sacked Lions quarterbacks Jon Kitna and J.T. O'Sullivan a combined total of four times in surrendering 20 points.
Analysis: The Vikings DST had a great week in leagues that heavily reward sacks and turnovers and a so-so week in leagues that heavily penalize yards. Consider the Vikings defense a terrific start Week 3 at a Chiefs team that's only managed 13 points in two games.
News: The Vikings defense was a menace in Week 1 against Atlanta with two defensive touchdowns, six sacks and two interceptions in a 24-3 victory. The Vikings will limit the Lions ground game, harass Lions QB Jon Kitna and probably force a couple of interceptions. But look for the Lions to score in this one, which will limit how good the Vikings do this week.
Analysis: The Vikings DST was outstanding in Week 1, but that was against the Falcons. The Lions actually have a decent QB and tons of weapons out wide. If you have faith the Vikings' Week 1 effort was no accident, then start them again. Otherwise, keep them reserved.
News: The Vikings, hosting the Falcons Week 1, made the Atlanta offense look inept en route to a 24-3 victory. The defense contributed two of the Vikings' three touchdowns -- both on interception returns. Kevin Williams returned an interception 54 yards for a first-quarter score, and Antoine Winfield ran one back 14 yards in the fourth quarter for Minnesota. Winfield's came on a pass deflected off the hands of Falcons WR Michael Jenkins. The Vikings DST also registered six sacks.
Analysis: Then again, the Vikings were also facing QB Joey Harrington, so it's not like they brought a future Hall of Famer to his knees. Still, the Vikings DST has plenty of talent. Minnesota vists the Lions next week, an offense that typically surrenders a lot of sacks, but also scores a lot of points. If your league rewards sacks heavily, go ahead and start the Vikings DST in Week 2. Otherwise, find a defense playing a lower-scoring team.
News: We know Minnesota will stop the Falcons ground game. That's a given. And with Joey Harrington throwing the ball, the Vikings have a chance to force some turnovers.
Analysis: This is a great matchup for the Vikings, especially at home. The Falcons franchise is still reeling from the Vick debacle and Harrington is nowhere near an adequate replacement at the QB position. Expect the Vikes to rack up the Fantasy points this week.
News: The veteran-laden Vikings defense knows the young offense will take all the help it can get. And through the first two preseason games, there has been plenty of it. The Vikings defense has scored four touchdowns this preseason, including three in last week's 37-20 victory over the New York Jets. If that unit played offense, that production would be tied for eighth in the league after two games.
Analysis: The Vikings DST is an underrated unit that will likely surprise some Fantasy owners this year. Consider taking them in the last round after all the top DST's are gone, and they can be a useful starting option.
News: The Vikings activated third-year defensive end Erasmus James from the physically unable to perform list on Sunday, hoping he can regain the pass-rushing form he exhibited at Wisconsin before a serious knee injury last year. The Vikings also placed rookie linebacker Rufus Alexander on injured reserve after he tore a ligament in his left knee against the Rams and signed free agent defensive tackle Fred Evans. "To have Erasmus back, we're excited and we are just going to watch his progress over the next few weeks and hopefully he'll get to the point where he can help us early in the season," defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said.
Analysis: Despite their strong run defense last season, the Vikings DST unit is at best a low-end option and/or a bye-week replacement, depending on the depth of your league.
News: NFL Network reports that SS Mike Doss has signed a one-year deal with the Vikings. The former Colt has yet to play a full 16-game season in the NFL, playing in only six games in 2006 before tearing his right ACL.
Analysis: Doss is good for a few sacks per season and is pretty good against the run. This signing will help the Vikings out quite a bit, especially since Doss is already familiar with the type of defense the Vikes run from his days with the Colts. The Vikings DST unit is at best a low-end option and/or a bye-week replacement, depending on the depth of your league. It helps that they play in a division void of an offensive powerhouse.
News: The Minneapolis Star Tribune had a lot of news on the Vikings defense on Thursday. For starters, coach Brad Childress named E.J. Henderson the club's starting middle linebacker. Henderson led the team in tackles with 109 (76 solo) last year, adding three sacks, two fumble recoveries, two passes defensed and two interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown. Childress also said he wants to re-sign DT Pat Williams to a contract that keeps him in Minnesota past 2007, and that he is not sure if DE Erasmus James will be ready for the start of the coming season and is a candidate for the PUP list.
Analysis: The Vikings DST unit is at best a low-end option and/or a bye-week replacement, depending on the depth of your league. New defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier should keep the unit's continuity in the Tampa-2 defense, and they have plenty of quality players at all levels of the defense. It helps that they play in a division void of an offensive powerhouse.
News: Leslie Frazier became the first assistant to leave Super Bowl champion Indianapolis on Thursday when he accepted the job as defensive coordinator of the Vikings. A special assistant to Colts coach Tony Dungy and also in charge of the team's defensive backs, Frazier couldn't interview for the position until after the Super Bowl. But Childress was willing to wait for someone with a diverse background and a strong familiarity with the Tampa Cover 2 scheme run primarily by Minnesota under Mike Tomlin this past season. A couple of rings, including one won by Frazier as a player in 1986 with Chicago, didn't hurt, either. "I think you screw it up as a head coach that has been involved offensively to think you are going to jump in and say: 'You know I've done offense my whole life, but in this job I'm going to jump in and I'm going to get real involved with the defense,'" Childress said. "You hire guys to be experts and stay in their lane and be experts at what they do and then you let them do their job."
Analysis: Frazier was Cincinnati's defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004, but was fired by coach Marvin Lewis following problems the Bengals had stopping the run and preventing big gains. Lewis presided over some of the league's best defenses as a coordinator, so it was difficult -- according to Frazier -- for him to hand over some decision-making go and give Frazier room to make his own impact. Consider Frazier as someone who should help the Vikings defense stay dominant against the run and the pass. Minnesota's defense/special teams unit finished seventh in standard-scoring leagues in 2006 and will be a low-end option when 2007 leagues draft.
News: The Vikings DST was considered a sleeper unit in 2006, and they came through with flying colors. They totaled 30 sacks, 31 fumble recoveries, 21 interceptions and five defensive touchdowns while sporting the top-ranked run defense in the league (allowing a total of 985 yards on the season).
Analysis: Minnesota's defense/special teams unit finished seventh in standard-scoring leagues in 2006 and will be a low-end option when 2007 leagues draft.
News: The Vikings defense did not have a good game Week 17 against the Rams, giving up 416 yards and 41 points. They did not force any turnovers and recorded no sacks.
Analysis: The Vikings run defense was one of the best in the league all season. However, their pass defense left little to desire. They will likely be viewed as either a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST or high-end No. 2 DST heading into next season.
News: The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Vikings coach Brad Childress said that CB Fred Smoot broke his jaw in a one-car accident last Friday in Jackson, Miss., and will miss the team's Week 17 finale vs. St. Louis. Smoot, one of the biggest trash talkers in the league, cannot speak after breaking his jaw in five places and having it wired shut after surgery. Moreover, rookie CB Cedric Griffin was placed on Injured Reserve Wednesday with a shoulder stinger. That leaves Antoine Winfield, Ronyell Whitaker and Charles Gordon as the top three CBs on the Vikings.
Analysis: Minnesota's run defense should remain strong for the Week 17 game vs. St. Louis, but their passing defense will hurt them, especially against the Rams. Don't use the Vikings defense if you can help it in Week 17.
News: The Minnesota Vikings DST allowed just nine points in Week 16 at Green Bay while giving up 319 total net yards. They also had a sack, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. One of the interceptions of Brett Favre was returned 47 yards by DB Fred Smoot for a score.
Analysis: The Vikings DST looked sharp in dreary Green Bay, but they are still not a recommended Fantasy option in most leagues for Week 17 in the season finale against QB Marc Bulger and the Rams.
News: Vikings defenders on the Week 16 injury report include: CB Cedric Griffin (neck, doubtful), LB Napoleon Harris (wrist, probable), DT Pat Williams (knee, probable) and DT Kevin Williams (shoulder, probable).
Analysis: Griffin's absence will hurt the Vikings' DB depth, but otherwise the Vikings defense should be solid in the game. Only Harris and Kevin Williams should be considered for use in IDP leagues.
News: The Vikings DST had two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery against the Jets. LB E.J. Henderson had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. DB Darren Sharper had eight tackles. LB Napoleon Harris had three tackles, one sack and an interception. DB Antoine Winfield had five tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Vikings a No. 2 DST option for Week 16 against Green Bay and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Vikings defense had three sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles at Detroit in Week 14. They held the Lions offense to 13 points (7 of Detroit's points were scored by their defense).
Analysis: Minnesota's defense should continue to be used vs. the N.Y. Jets in Week 15 as they are dominant against the run and fairly competitive against the pass.
News: The Vikings DST had three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one sack against Chicago. LB Ben Leber had two tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. DB Antoine Winfield had one tackle and an interception. LB Napoleon Harris had one tackle and an interception. DL Darrion Scott had two tackles and a sack. LB Rod Davis recovered a fumble. LB E.J. Henderson had seven tackles. DB Darren Sharper had five tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Vikings a low-end No. 1 DST in Week 14 against Detroit. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: Vikings DT Pat Williams (knee) was upgraded to questionable for Week 13 at Chicago, just one day after being downgraded to doubtful. He didn't practice at all this week. CB Cedric Griffin (neck), LB Napoleon Harris (wrist) and FS Dwight Smith (shoulder) all remain probable for the game.
Analysis: Williams does help the Vikings defense in a big way (figuratively and literally). If he plays, consider the Vikes a No. 2 Fantasy defense for Week 13 at the Bears.
News: According to the Pioneer Press, the Vikings' secondary is upset with Bears QB Rex Grossman. Apparently Grossman had some choice words for the Vikings after throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass that punctuated the Bears' 19-16 come-from-behind victory at the Metrodome. "After he threw a touchdown pass, he kind of was beating his chest, talking trash, this and that. 'You guys are this,' " Vikings safety Darren Sharper said. "Some curse words, stuff like that. He tried to show us up a little bit. In 10 years, I haven't had a quarterback do that at any time to me. So we definitely remember that, and the guys in the locker room remember that." Grossman told Chicago reporters: "The whole game, their DBs were talking to me, just really getting under my skin a little bit, probably more than I should have allowed it to, but they were just yapping the whole game.
Analysis: The Vikings pass defense has struggled this year, so consider Grossman a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 13.
News: The Vikings forced three fumbles and two interceptions in Week 12 vs. Arizona. They allowed 26 points and 412 yards of offense, but 12 of those points came as a result of a kickoff and fumble return.
Analysis: They managed only one sack in the game, but played well aside from a late lapse in the fourth quarter. Continue to consider them a nice start in leagues of 10 or more teams for Week 13 when they travel to Chicago.
News: The Minnesota Vikings have demoted cornerback Fred Smoot, who has struggled in recent weeks with a groin injury and the death of his half-brother. Coach Brad Childress said Friday that rookie Cedric Griffin has leapfrogged the veteran Smoot on the depth chart at right cornerback, though both will see plenty of action Sunday against Arizona. "I think the best thing is that the guys that give us the best chance to win are on the field," Childress said. "It's on merit, and Cedric has played well and therefore he goes to the front of the line."
Analysis: Complicating the issue is a neck and shoulder injury Griffin suffered against Miami. Childress said Griffin had "another episode" in practice Friday and is listed as questionable for the game. He has impressed coaches with his toughness and ability to hit in the open field. Neither player is a recommended IDP option for Week 12. The Vikings DST should be considered at best a No. 2 option in Week 12 against Arizona.
News: Vikings coach Brad Childress is shaking up his lineup after all. DB Fred Smoot has been benched and replaced by rookie Cedric Griffin, according to multiple people close to the situation. Griffin is listed on the injury report as questionable after he injured his neck against the Dolphins. But the second-round draft pick's confidence has grown each week this season, and he has impressed coaches with his aggressive style. The reason for Smoot's benching is murky. He has endured a rough month, starting with the death of his half-brother Nov. 5 in a car accident and continuing with a groin injury that limited him last week. The primary reason could be the cushion Smoot is providing receivers at the line of scrimmage. Griffin appears superior in press coverage and is a more capable and consistent tackler than Smoot. Against the Dolphins, Griffin made one jarring tackle and deflected one pass. But he left early in the third quarter with what was announced as a shoulder injury. The week before, against Green Bay, Griffin had a season-high eight tackles and defended two passes. "He's a football player first and a corner second," defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin said. "Those are the type of guys that we're looking for. Regardless of job descriptions, ultimately this game comes down to being physically and mentally tough. He's both of those things, and what he did didn't surprise us whatsoever." The move could foreshadow Smoot's departure from the team during the offseason. Signed to a six-year, $34 million contract in March 2005 that included $10.8 million in guaranteed money, Smoot has had a tumultuous run.
Analysis: Reserve Smoot immediately in IDP leagues and consider the Vikings DST a No. 2 option in Week 12 against Arizona.
News: Football teams frequently talk about how critical it is to stop the run. Well, the Minnesota Vikings have managed to ruin that old standby. The NFL's best rushing defense, which has allowed a mere 60.3 yards per game on the ground, has not been able to stop a losing streak that reached four with Sunday's 24-20 loss at Miami. Initially, Minnesota became the first team in 45 years to hold an opponent to negative yards rushing and lose. On Monday, the Elias Sports Bureau informed the Vikings of a statistical correction that credited them with a 7-yard sack of Joey Harrington instead of calling it a running play. Those are just semantics, though. The one issue that matters for Minnesota (4-6) right now is a fast-fading opportunity to make the playoffs.
Analysis: The Vikings have the seventh overall defense in the league, but have the fifth worst pass defense (227.9) in the league as well. Consider using the Vikings DST as a good sleeper for Week 12 against Arizona.
News: The Vikings DST had one interception and recovered one fumble against Miami but gave up 24 points and had no sacks. DB Dwight Smith had seven tackles and recovered a fumble. DB Fred Smoot had five tackles. DB Antoine Winfield had four tackles and an interception. DL Kevin Williams had two tackles. LB E.J. Henderson had four tackles. DB Darren Sharper had four tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Vikings DST a good sleeper for Week 12 against Arizona. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The Vikings allowed 23 points and 394 yards of total offense. They did not sack Brett Favre at all in the game and did not force any turnovers.
Analysis: The Vikings will face the Dolphins on the road in Week 11. That's not a bad matchup, but the Vikings aren't a recommended Fantasy unit anyway.
News: The Vikings defense had a great game against the 49ers in Week 9, but yet somehow, the offense could not lead the team to a victory. The Vikings defense held the 49ers to 133 yards and no touchdowns. They did give up three field goals. DB Antoine Winfield had the Vikings interception while LB Dontarrious Thomas, DL Kevin Williams and DB Darren Sharper all had sacks.
Analysis: It is just hard to imagine how a defense can play so well, but that team still manages to lose a game. The Vikings DST has been all over the place this season and it is not recommended you use them in Week 10 as the Packers come to town. Williams, Sharper and Winfield are all solid IDP options, while Thomas is not.
News: Vikings middle linebacker Napoleon Harris will miss Sunday's game at San Francisco with a dislocated wrist. Harris was downgraded to out on Friday's injury report and will be replaced by LB Dontarrious Thomas. Defensive tackle Pat Williams (knee) was upgraded Friday to probable, while defensive tackle Kevin Williams (ankle) remained questionable.
Analysis: The Vikings defense is at best a bye-week replacement option for Fantasy owners when they play at San Francisco. Expect a moderate-scoring game between the two teams, but the Vikes could land some turnovers.
News: Vikings MLB Napoleon Harris dislocated his wrist and was put in a cast, and defensive tackle Kevin Williams played most of the 31-7 loss with a high ankle sprain, Vikings coach Brad Childress said Tuesday. Childress didn't give a forecast on any of the players' chances to play Sunday at San Francisco, saying he would have a better idea Wednesday. If Harris can't play, Childress said strong side linebacker Ben Leber could slide over or backup Dontarrious Thomas could get the start.
Analysis: Minnesota's defense plays at San Francisco in Week 9. While that may look appealing, remember that the 49ers offense has been solid for most of the season. Try to find a better DST option for Week 9.
News: The Vikings special teams cashed in on a punt return score by Mewelde Moore vs. New England in Week 8, but were otherwise ineffective on defense, allowing four touchdown passes and a field goal. The Vikes totaled three sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles.
Analysis: Minnesota's defense plays at San Francisco in Week 9. While that may look appealing, remember that the 49ers offense has been solid for most of the season. Try to find a better DST option for Week 9.
News: The Vikings DST scored a TD against Seattle when DL Kevin Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone. Williams also had four tackles and a sack. LB E.J. Henderson had nine tackles and an interception. DB Cedric Griffin had four tackles and an interception. LB Ben Leber had four tackles and a sack. DL Darrion Scott had three tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Vikings DST has a difficult matchup in Week 8 against New England. Use your regular IDP players if needed against the Patriots.
News: Receiver Bethel Johnson is expected to replace Troy Williamson as the Vikings' kick returner. Williamson was willing to return kicks but never embraced the role and would be happy to give it up. He has averaged 23.3 yards on 13 returns. Johnson is looking for another chance after reaching an injury settlement with New Orleans during training camp. A second-round pick by New England in 2003, Johnson was traded to the Saints during the offseason. Although he has been a disappointment as a receiver, Johnson has averaged 25.1 yards and scored two touchdowns on 102 career kick returns. He led AFC kickoff return men as a rookie with a 28.2-yard average (30 returns for 847 yards) and had a touchdown.
Analysis: Johnson should only be looked in Fantasy leagues that reward for individual kick return yards. He is not a viable WR option in most leagues. He will probably not have that much of an impact either for owners of the Vikings DST. He probably won't be racking up the points taking kickoffs to the house, so don't bank on his return skills when you choose to play the Vikings DST for Fantasy purposes.
News: Despite getting five sacks and forcing four turnovers against the Lions, linebacker Napoleon Harris feels the Vikings defense can be even better. "We are still a long ways from where we want to be," he said. "We made some plays, and I think right now we're doing a lot of great things just off hustle and talent level. But once we get the total execution down and playing from snap to snap that way, I think we are going to be very good."
Analysis: Minnesota's defense ranks seventh overall, holding opponents to 275.4 yards and 16.4 points per game. However, with just seven takeaways and 11 sacks, they're not exactly dominating. Consider them a bye-week defensive replacement, although they won't play again until Week 7 at Seattle -- a difficult matchup for them for sure.
News: The Vikings DST scored two touchdowns to lead a 26-17 victory against Detroit. LB Ben Leber scored on a fumble return, and LB E.J. Henderson returned an interception for a score. LB Napoleon Harris and DB Darren Sharper also had interceptions.
Analysis: It was a great day for the Vikings DST, but they should be reserved against a good Seattle offense in Week 7.
News: The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that both FS Darren Sharper (quadricep) and CB Antoine Winfield (quadricep) vowed to play vs. Detroit in Week 5. Sharper practiced on Thursday while Winfield sat out, but Winfield feels "looser" and plans on practicing on Friday.
Analysis: If Sharper and Winfield play, it should definitely help the Minnesota defense against Detroit's surging offense. Both Sharper and Winfield are also good starters in Fantasy IDP league play, too.
News: The Vikings allowed 17 points in Week 4 at Buffalo and gave up 296 yards of total offense. They picked up three sacks, but did not force any turnovers.
Analysis: Consider the Vikings DST a decent start for Week 5 vs. Detroit. They'll be back at home in the dome for that one.
News: The Vikings defense hauled in one sack and two interceptions vs. the Bears in Week 3, holding them to 19 points, 278 passing yards and 51 rushing yards.
Analysis: The Vikings defense will face the Bills in Buffalo next week and will have the chance to put up a good outing there. Consider using them if your primary defense is on bye in Week 4.

Vikings lose DE for the season
News: Minnesota Vikings defensive end Erasmus James will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Analysis: James is the third defensive player to suffer a season-ending injury for Minnesota. The Vikings will play against the Bears in Week 3, who surprisingly have a quality offense when they're healthy (and they are). Use the Vikings defense in Fantasy play only if you don't have a better option to go with in Week 3.

Vikings D gets two sacks
News: The Vikings defense held the Panthers to 13 points and had a pair of sacks in Week 2 in Minnesota.
Analysis: They play against the Bears in Week 3, who surprisingly have a quality offense when they're healthy (and they are). Use the Vikings defense in Fantasy play only if you don't have a better option to go with in Week 3.

DB Dwight Smith inactive Mon.
News: Smith was listed as an inactive for Week 1 at Washington despite the fact he is a starter. The defensive back was being punished for alleged indecent conduct two weeks ago.
Analysis: Smith is expected to be back in the starting lineup for Week 2 against the Panthers. The Vikings DST is a solid play after allowing just one touchdown in the opener.

Vikings DST allows just one TD
News: DB Fred Smoot (ribs) was able to start in Week 1 at Washington. He recorded six solo tackles in the road victory. Overall, the Vikings allowed just 266 total net yards and 16 points.
Analysis: The Vikings did a very nice job allowing just one touchdown against the 'Skins on the road. They might be a solid play in Week 2 against Carolina, especially if WR Steve Smith (hamstring) is unable to play.

LBs a concern for MIN DST
News: On defense, Vikings head coach Brad Childress has put his faith in 34-year-old coordinator Mike Tomlin. Tomlin left the Buccaneers after five seasons as the defensive backs coach to bring the Tampa-2 scheme to Minnesota. The Vikings are confident weak-side linebacker E.J. Henderson can play the Derrick Brooks role in the defense, but there have been questions about middle linebacker Napoleon Harris and how he will do.The defensive line and secondary both appear to be strong, but if the linebackers struggle to adjust to their roles of helping in pass coverage it could prove a huge blow to what Tomlin is trying to accomplish.
Analysis: The Vikings will play a Redskins team that may or may not have RB Clinton Portis running for them. If Portis is out, Minnesota's DST is worth rolling with against the 'Skins. Otherwise, sit them down and wait for another matchup to use them.

S Treaudo cut by Minnesota
News: The Minnesota Vikings released DT Manase Hopoi, LB Marcus Lawrence, LB Marcus Lawrence and S Ahmad Treaudo on Saturday.
Analysis: For now, look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over and regular season commences.

Vikings DST looking strong early
News: Fred Smoot highlighted a big night by Minnesota's defense with a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown as the Vikings blanked Baltimore's first team offense and beat the Ravens 30-7 on Friday. "We're just playing team ball. It's not a hero defense. Everybody's making plays, not just one person," said Smoot, who forced one of four Ravens turnovers. He bruised his ribs trying to make a tackle in the second quarter, but said later he was fine.
Analysis: Smoot turned a fast move on Steve McNair's pass into six points. For now, look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

Vikings lose rookie LB for season
News: Vikings rookie linebacker Chad Greenway is out for the season, the result of a knee injury he sustained in Minnesota's first exhibition game. He had an MRI test Tuesday morning, but a news release issued by the team didn't specify the nature of the injury. In a prepared statement, coach Brad Childress said he was confident the first-round draft pick would be "completely healthy for the 2007 season."
Analysis: Greenway was hurt covering a kickoff in Monday night's 16-13 loss to the Oakland Raiders. While he has been the backup weakside linebacker to E.J. Henderson all spring and summer, Greenway was destined for a significant role in the defense - especially on passing downs. His athleticism is a good fit for special teams, too, which was where he was playing when he got hurt. For now, look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

Vikings lose safety Williams
News: Minnesota Vikings safety Tank Williams will probably miss the entire season with an injury to his left kneecap sustained Saturday during training camp practice. Coach Brad Childress said Sunday that no roster move had been made yet regarding Williams, who signed with the Vikings as a free agent earlier this year after four seasons with Tennessee. "I feel terrible for Tank," Childress said, adding that he became emotional when he saw Williams in the locker room after he was carted off the field.
Analysis: Williams was competing with Dwight Smith, another free agent addition, to start at one of the safety spots opposite Darren Sharper. For now, look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

Vikings SS injures knee
News: Minnesota Vikings strong safety Tank Williams was carted off the field on Saturday after injuring his left knee during a training camp practice. He injured the knee while backpedaling during a seven-on-seven passing drill. He did not make contact with another player, but as soon as he planted his left leg, he let out a scream and crumpled to the ground.
Analysis: Before Williams' injury, the Vikings moved to bolster their depth in the secondary, releasing veteran receiver Dez White and signing cornerback Tony Beckham, a fifth-year pro out of the Wisconsin-Stout. Beckham was a teammate of Williams the past four years in Tennessee, starting two games last season. Look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

VikingsLB Greenway joins team
News: The Vikings and first-round pick LB Chad Greenway agreed to a five-year contract, ensuring his participation in training camp this summer. Greenway will "compete" for the starting weakside linebacker spot for Minnesota, but he should walk out of camp with the job.
Analysis: Greenway will be playing in the "Derrick Brooks" role of the defensive scheme, which is changing to the Tampa-2 style, so he could be a menace. Look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

Vikings nab DB Dwight Smith
News: The Vikings agreed to a contract with defensive back Dwight Smith, a sixth-year veteran of the NFL who was released by the Saints. Smith, 27, will be reunited with former Tampa Bay coaches Mike Tomlin, a linebackers coach with Minnesota, and Joe Woods, who coaches the secondary for the Vikings. "This is a great opportunity for a fresh start," Smith said. "I get to play with my old coach again. There are a bunch of great veterans already in the room. Hopefully I can be an addition that can help somewhere and I'm going to fit where needed." Smith is expected to compete with free-agent signee Tank Williams for a starting safety spot next to Darren Sharper.
Analysis: This only helps Minnesota's defense get better and deeper. Smith should earn a starting role eventually, though it could take a few weeks. Minnesota is incorporating the 'Tampa-2' defense this season and it should be formidable. They are particularly prepared for the pass moreso than the run, though that could be improved, too. Look at the Vikings as a DST sleeper unit that can probably be picked up once drafts are over this season.

Greenway to start on weak side
News: The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Minnesota Vikings see LB Chad Greenway as an instant starter on the weak side. Ben Leber will start on the strong side, while E.J. Henderson and Dontarrious Thomas will compete for middle linebacker duties.
Analysis: Greenway will be worth late-round consideration in IDP formats, and his presence makes the Vikes defense even more attractive in traditional leagues.
News: The Minnesota Vikings seleced Iowa LB Chad Greenway with the No. 17 overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Analysis: Greenway is an athletic linebacker who should come in an make an impact for head coach Brad Childress. His value in IDP leagues will be uncertain until the preseason, however, but the Vikes defense will be a serious sleeper candidate.

Tank Williams signs with Vikes
News: The Vikings announced the signing of free-agent strong safety Tank Williams. The four-year veteran has started in every game he's played in (he missed seven games in '04). Williams is expected to compete with Willie Offord for the starting strong safety job.
Analysis: Minnesota's secondary is looking good: Antoine Winfield and Fred Smoot at cornerback and Darren Sharper and Tank Williams at safety. It's not an All-Pro unit, but it's a nice foursome. The Vikings have a pretty stout defensive line, too, so it's going to be difficult to pass against them. There are a lot of good defenses this year, and Minnesota's isn't in the top-12 among DSTs just yet, but they're definitely one to watch when training camp and the preseason kicks in.

Vikings switch to 3-4 defense
News: The Vikings made a rather dramatic defensive move in last week's loss against Chicago, playing a 3-4 defense for 98 percent of the snaps. This was done largely out of necessity because starting left end Kenechi Udeze is out for the season after knee surgery and backup Spencer Johnson is bothered by two sore knees.
Analysis: In Week 7 vs. Green Bay, Johnson (knees), LB Dontarrious Thomas (shoulder) and CB Brian Williams (knee) are all listed as probable. The Vikings should play better at home, but Green Bay is not a favorable matchup for them, making them a low-end option in Fantasy leagues. The game figures to be a shootout.
