Sam Baker likely done for the year

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/17/2014) The initial diagnosis on Falcons left tackle Sam Baker is that he suffered a torn patella tendon, reports NFL Network. Baker likely is out for the season.

Sam Baker carted off field with knee injury

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2014) Falcons left tackle Sam Baker had to be carted off the field with a knee injury in his team's preseason game against the Texans Saturday.

The Falcons announced that Baker will not return to action. If he is in fact injured, it's a big blow to an Atlanta offensive line that figured to be improved this season with the addition of first-round pick Jake Matthews. The rookie may be pressed into left-tackle duty if the outlook on Baker is grim, or the team may turn to Lamar Holmes, who replaced Baker in Saturday's game.

Sam Baker expects clearance this week

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/29/2014) Falcons offensive tackle Sam Baker, who underwent season-ending knee surgery last year, said he expects to receive full clearance this week, reports ESPN.

"I'm feeling good," Baker said Monday night. "In a couple days, I should be cleared. I've been running, doing everything, and I should get fully cleared in a couple days. It's great, especially because we're getting ready with the offseason stuff, to be able to get out with the offense and to be able to go back to doing plays and stuff like that."

Baker had problems with his left knee last season and attempted to resolve the issue with platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment, but it didn’t respond. In November, the team announced he would undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

Baker played in just four games last season after starting all 16 games in 2012 and performing well at left tackle. The former first-round draft pick is due to make $7.25 million this season with a cap value of $6.05 million.

Would Falcons move Sam Baker to the right side?

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2014) With Falcons left tackle Sam Baker returning from season-ending knee surgery, general manager Thomas Dimitroff says he's confident Baker will return to his 2012 form. But Dimitroff left open the possibility of moving Baker to right tackle depending on the health of his knee, reports ESPN.com.

Baker will count $6.05 million against the cap in 2014.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/11/2013) Falcons coach Mike Smith expressed concern Monday for left tackle Sam Baker, who missed his fifth game Sunday against the Seahawks because of a lingering left knee injury.

"Sam’s been dealing with his knee all season long," Smith said, per ESPN. "He’s fighting through it. We got him back out there after a four-or-five-week time period of allowing him to rest. He wasn’t ready to go this week. And, yes, it is a concern. When you can't go out and play consecutive games, you have to be concerned about it. Sam’s doing everything that he can in terms of getting back out there. We want to make sure that he’s 100 percent before we put him back out there on the football field."

Shaky Lamar Holmes an improvement over Sam Baker?

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

In 248 snaps on both the right and left side, Holmes has given up two sacks, five quarterback hits and 17 hurries, according to Pro Football Focus.

The website rates Holmes, who's committed two penalties, seventh-worst out of 71 NFL tackles. However, Baker is actually the worst-rated tackle this season. In 140 snaps, he's allowed a sack, six hits and 10 hurries while committing three penalties.
