News: The Patriots spent the majority of the 2012 NFL Draft focused on improving 2011's league-worst defense, using six of their seven picks over the weekend on defensive players. The Patriots traded up twice in the first round to select defensive end Chandler Jones of Syracuse at No. 21, and linebacker Dont'a Hightower of Alabama at No. 25. The Patriots also spent both of their second-day picks on defense, selecting safety Tavon Wilson of Illinois in the second round, at No. 48, as well as defensive end Jake Bequette of Arkansas in Round 3, at No. 90. Ohio State safety Nate Ebner and Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard were late-round choices.
Analysis: Jones and Hightower should be key cogs in the defense right away, especially Hightower. The biggest problem the Pats had last season was getting their pass rush to scare opposing quarterbacks, and Jones should help there as might Bequette in due time. Despite their well-documented woes last season, the Patriots DST is worth a late pick in drafts given their weak-ish division schedule, though they'll be a risky choice to trust in Week 1 at Tennessee.
News: The Patriots held the Giants offense in check for about 56 minutes, holding a 17-15 lead as the Giants took over for their final offensive possession of the Super Bowl with just under four minutes to play. However they allowed Giants quarterback Eli Manning to complete five of six passes and move quickly down the field, setting up Ahmad Bradshaw for a six-yard touchdown with 57 seconds remaining that put the Giants up for good. The Patriots defense gave up 396 total yards and failed to pick up any turnovers in the game, allowing the Giants to rack up 37:05 of time of possession. They did manage to put good pressure on Manning for parts of the game, racking up three sacks and six quarterback hurries, however it just wasnt enough, as the Patriots lost by a final score of 21-17.
Analysis: The Patriots defense was surprisingly good in the game, adopting a bend-dont-break approach to keeping the Giants high-powered offense in check. They stepped up when it mattered the most, holding their post-season opponents to 17.7 points per game in three games. They gave up a ton of yards in both the post-season and regular season, however they were middle of the pack in points allowed. They were a pretty solid Fantasy DST unit thanks to their relatively stingy scoring defense as well as the 23 interceptions and 10 fumbles they forced. Theyre going to need to retool in the offseason, especially in the secondary, however they should be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit on Draft Day.
News: The Patriots held the Broncos to 252 total yards of offense on Saturday en route to the 45-10 victory. The Patriots defense stripped Tim Tebow early in the game on Saturday night. They almost had a second fumble recovery, but the ruling on the field was that Demaryius Thomas' forward progress was stopped before the ball came out.
Analysis: New England gave up a lot of yards this season, especially through the air. They allowed an NFL record 4,727 passing yards this season, but from a Fantasy perspective, it was actually a pretty good unit, thanks in large part to its 27 interceptions. Despite some holes that need to be filled the Patriots DST should be viewed as a Top-12 option in 2012 drafts.
News: The Patriots intercepted QB Ryan Fitzpatrick four times Week 17 against the Bills. All four interceptions came in the second half and two went to DB Sterling Moore, who returned one 21 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Patriots also had two sacks in the contest. In all, they allowed 21 points on 402 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST allowed an NFL record 4,727 passing yards this season, but from a Fantasy perspective, it was actually a pretty good unit, thanks in large part to its 27 interceptions. The Patriots always manage to put an opportunistic defense on the field even if it isn't what most people would describe as dominant, so chances are the Patriots DST will get drafted among the top 12 Fantasy units in 2012 despite its struggles against the pass in 2011.
News: The Patriots DST certainly wasn't at its best on Saturday of Week 16 at home against the Dolphins. The unit did do the job in winning the game, however, 27-24, as they were able to hold off Miami's charge. The Patriots DST gave up 381 total yards of offense in the win and forced Miami into committing two turnovers, one coming each on a fumble and interception by Matt Moore. The Patriots DST got to Moore for five sacks in the win.
Analysis: The Patriots DST now has nine sacks in a two-game span against Denver and Miami as they head into Week 17 against Buffalo. The Patriots DST continues to put up Fantasy points despite not being able to limit the points and yardage racked up against them. The Patriots DST continues to be an opportune unit and that should help them entering Week 17 against Buffalo. Fantasy owners can continue to start the Patriots DST if they have been to this point.
News: The Patriots DST is coming off back-to-back solid Fantasy scoring efforts on the road at Washington and Denver as they head into Week 16 at home against Miami. The Patriots DST has recorded six sacks and four turnovers forced with a DTD over the last two games. Facing the Dolphins, Miami has been sacked 11 times in the last two weeks and has lost six turnovers over that span.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has not been a great unit this season in terms of limiting the yardage and points scored against it. That said, the Patriots DST has been an opportune unit and they could turn a couple Matt Moore passes into points in the Week 16 game. That said, the Patriots DST struggled Week 1 against the Dolphins, allowing 488 yards, 24 points and only forcing one turnover. The Patriots DST should be trusted as a must-start Fantasy unit for Week 16 and should be considered more of a low-end No. 2 unit.
News: The Patriots had the tough task of slowing down QB Tim Tebow in Week 15 and did a good job of limiting the Broncos. While Tebow totaled 287 yards with two touchdowns, New England was able to limit Denver to 393 yards of total offense, including 141 through the air, in the 41-23 win. Along with giving up their fewest points since Week 12, the Patriots sacked Tebow four times and caused two turnovers.
Analysis: The Patriots gave up 13 points in the first quarter on Sunday but buckled down after that and ended up pulling away for the win at the end. While Tebow was able to break out of some would-be sacks, New England did a solid job of applying pressure on the QB and kept the passing game in check. There have been reports that DL Andre Carter, who has 10 sacks on the year, could be done for the season so keep an eye on the situation going forward. Either way with Miami up next on the schedule, consider the Patriots DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 16.
News: The Patriots will be going up against one of the more unique offenses in the league in the Broncos in Week 15. Led by QB Tim Tebow, Denver sports the best rushing attack in the NFL, averaging over 156 yards per game, but rank 31st in passing. New England ranks 13th in the league in run defense but dead last against the pass, allowing nearly 309 yards per contest. The Patriots have recorded 29 sacks thus far with 18 interceptions and three DST scores.
Analysis: The Patriots have given up 20-plus points in their last three games but thanks to their potent offense they have been able to come away with the win each of them. If Tebow's track record stays true, New England will only have to worry about him in the fourth quarter but their poor pass rush and weak secondary could hurt them early. While they should be able to outscore the scrappy Broncos, consider the Patriots DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 15.
News: The Patriots DST certainly couldn't stop Washington QB Rex Grossman and the Redskins on Sunday in D.C. That said, the Patriots DST was able to contain the Redskins in the Week 14 34-27 victory. The Patriots DST gave up 463 yards of total offense to Washington, though the unit held when it counted most. The Patriots DST came up with an interception of Grossman near the goal line with just seconds to play in the game to end it. The Patriots DST forced two Washington turnovers in the game. The first resulted in a Vince Wilfork touchdown as Grossman was stripped of the ball in the end zone.
Analysis: The Patriots DST added two sacks in the game. Despite giving up large chunks of yardage and 27 points, the Patriots DST still did the little things, especially scoring a defensive touchdown. The Patriots DST have been an opportune defense all season long despite being terrible against the pass. Heading into Week 15 at Denver, Tim Tebow and the Broncos don't turn the ball over much. That said, we still think the Patriots DST are a decent Fantasy start in any format.
News: The Patriots DST has had back-to-back underwhelming performances in Philadelphia and against the Indianapolis Colts the last two weeks heading into Week 14 at Washington. The Patriots DST still can't stop the pass and even Washington QB Rex Grossman could have a solid performance against them for the Redskins. The Patriots DST has given up 44 points and 903 yards the last two games with just three turnovers forced and four total sacks.
Analysis: The Patriots DST should record a few turnovers Week 14, considering Grossman has been good for at least one or two per contest. Still, we expect the Redskins to be able to throw the ball and rack up huge chunks of yardage, just as most teams have against the Patriots DST this season. New England should get some opportune big plays against the Redskins, but they are a very low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST unit for Week 14. The Patriots DST is a unit worth starting, but only if you have no better options.
News: The New England defense appeared to be in line to hold its second opponent of the season to less than 10 points during its matchup against Indianapolis in Week 13. Until the fourth quarter, that is. The Patriots surrendered 21 points in the final quarter, including 14 in the final three minutes, but still managed a 31-24 victory over the Colts. Coach Bill Belichick was clearly unhappy with the performance. "I thought we did some good things out there today," he said. "We've obviously got to do a better job finishing the game. That was disappointing."
Analysis: Despite playing an entirely new defensive scheme (3-3-5) with three new starters (LB Niko Koutouvides, DB Nate Jones and WR-turned-DB Matthew Slater), Belichick barely acknowledged the significance. "We tried to put the best people out there we could to be competitive," he said. "It's really the same thing we do every week." The secondary produced only one interception as the Patriots recorded just two sacks while surrendering a whopping 437 total yards. Consider New England a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 14 at Washington.
News: The New England secondary has been ravaged by injuries so much this season that even WR Julian Edelman has filled in. But while the defensive backs keep learning, the Patriots keep winning. We have confidence in each other out there, undrafted rookie DB Sterling Moore said. With the new guys its all about having confidence and playing confident because when you play confident you play fast. Thats one thing that we emphasize. This week, the team signed DB Nate Jones, who was cut by Miami in October. He could play in Week 13 when New England tries to stretch its winning streak to four games against winless Indianapolis.
Analysis: New England have allowed the most yards passing in the NFL, partly because its led most of the games, forcing opponents to throw, and also because newcomers and backups are learning on the job. But the Patriots face a favorable matchup on Sunday as the Colts enter with the NFL's third-lowest scoring offense (13.6 ppg). They have also registered multiple sacks in their past three games and will be facing QB Dan Orlovsky, who will make his first start of the season. Consider New England a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 13.
News: The Patriots entered Week 12 against the Eagles with the worst pas defense in the league. They stayed true to from as QB Vince Young threw for 400 yards and a touchdown. New England, however, was able to pick him off once and also recorded two sacks. Despite getting carved up through the air, the Patriots held the Eagles to just 73 yards rushing in the 38-20 win.
Analysis: The Patriots' secondary continues to get exposed on a weekly basis but thanks to their high-scoring offense, they have been able to come away with the win more often than not. Their run defense has started playing better of late and they have become opportunistic with their turnovers. New England could be in for the best performance of the season -- Fantasy-wise -- with the winless Colts up next on the schedule so consider getting their DST active for Week 13.
News: The Patriots will be looking to slow down the Eagles in Week 12. Philadelphia enters the contest ranked third in total offense, averaging 415.5 yards and 23.7 points per game. New England enters the contest 32nd in total defense, allowing 404.2 yards and 20.3 points per game. The Patriots DST is ranked 16th in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 19 sacks, while forcing 20 turnovers thus far.
Analysis: New England faces a tough test on Sunday, although they still aren't sure who will be lining up under center. With Michael Vick still banged up Vince Young will likley find himself making his second straight start. Young proved more than capable of running the offense last week, so the Eagles should still be able to put up some points. While New England has been playing better of defense of late, owners should consider the unit a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 12.
News: The Patriots DST ran it up on the Chiefs Monday night Week 11. The Patriots DST allowed 334 yards in the game, but easily defeated Kansas City 34-3. The Patriots DST forced quarterback Tyler Palko, making his first start for injured Matt Cassel, into throwing three interceptions. New England also came up with three sacks of Palko on the game. As if that wasn't enough for the DST, receiver Julian Edelman also returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter of the win.
Analysis: After not recording a defensive or special teams touchdown all season, the Patriots DST has now done it in back-to-back performances against the Jets and the Chiefs. Also, the Patriots DST has recorded eight sacks the last two games and has forced five turnovers in limiting the opposition to just 17 points. Yes, the Patriots DST is finally on a roll heading into Week 12 at Philadelphia. The Eagles are a mess, too, right now, so consider the Patriots DST a solid start in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Patriots will be facing an inexperienced quarterback in Week 11 against the Chiefs. With Matt Cassel (hand) out, Tyler Palko will be making the first start of his career. Kansas City ranks 10th in the league in rushing, putting up over 124 yards per game, and 27th in passing. New England ranks ninth in the NFL in run defense but dead last against the pass. The Patriots have recorded 20 sacks thus far with 12 interceptions and a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Patriots gave up 378 yards of total offense a week ago against the Jets but limited them to just 16 points. New England also recorded a season-high five sacks, with four coming from DL Andre Carter. Hopefully their new-found pass rush will help them get to Palko on Sunday and lead to a second straight win. Either way, Kansas City's offense will likely struggle so consider the Patriots DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 11.
News: New England quickly discovered a way to snap its two-game losing skid: pressure Jets QB Mark Sanchez. The Patriots registered five sacks on Sanchez, including a single-game record 4.5 sacks by DL Andre Carter, to secure a 37-16 victory in Week 10. The menacing defense allowed Sanchez to complete only 51.3 percent of his passes -- his lowest mark since Week 4 at Baltimore. "The players have worked hard at it and gotten better at technique," New England coach Bill Belichick said. "They did a good job of winning their one-on-one match-ups. There's no magic wand. Give them credit. They rushed well."
Analysis: The Patriots also took advantage of three Jets turnovers, including LB Rob Ninkovich, who returned an interception 12 yards for a touchdown to seal the win midway through the fourth quarter. New England also recovered a muffed punt by Joe McKnight to set up Stephen Gostkowski's short field goal in the third. New England has now amassed 10 sacks over its past three games and should be viewed as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 11 against Kansas City.
News: New England has to force New York QB Mark Sanchez into some mistakes and put pressure on him in Week 10 if they want to win. Over his last four games Sanchez has thrown for 770 yards, seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. Opposing team's DSTs are averaging 11 Fantasy points per contest versus the Jets so far this year.
Analysis: New England gave up just 250 passing yards last week, but have been allowing more than 300 yards on average this season. New York scored 21 points and put up 255 yards of total offense when the two teams met in Week 5. Fantasy owners should consider the Patriots DST a No. 2 option for Week 10.
News: The Patriots defense did a solid job of limiting the Giants early on in Week 9 but they could not hold up late. After holding New York to zero points in the first half, New England got carved up late in the game and allowed the game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minutes to go. The Patriots gave up 361 yards of total offense, including 250 through the air, in the 24-20 loss. New England was able to force one turnover, however, picking off QB Eli Manning in the end zone in the third quarter.
Analysis: The Patriots have given up at least 24 points in each of their last three games, and have come away with the loss in each of them. They have proven that they need to score a ton of points in order to win as their defense still has some glaring holes. With the Jets up next on the schedule, continue to view the Patriots DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option. New York scored 21 points and put up 255 yards of total offense when the two teams met in Week 5.
News: The Patriots do not match up well with their Week 9 opponent -- the Giants. New York ranks fourth in the league in passing, averaging nearly 288 yards per game, and 30th in rushing. New England ranks ninth in the NFL against the run but sports a league-worst pass defense, giving up over 323 yards per contest. The Patriots have recorded 15 sacks thus far with nine interceptions.
Analysis: The Patriots got carved up through the air a week ago against the Steelers and have not been able to slow many teams down thus far. While their offense does a good job of holding onto the ball, the Giants have a solid blend of run and pass, and QB Eli Manning has shown that he can take a game over when need be. Sunday's matchup could end up being a shoot out so consider the Patriots DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: New England entered Week 8 with one task and they failed. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger passed for a season-high 365 yards on Sunday as the Steelers went on to win the game, 25-17. The Patriots also gave up 98 yards on the ground in the contest. LB Gary Guyton picked off Big Ben deep in Pittsburgh territory, giving the Patriots offense great field position, which led to a score. They did get to Roethlisberger five times in the contest.
Analysis: New England got a turnover and got to the quarterback in Week 8 against Pittsburgh, but has to do more to get Fantasy owners to notice them. They now have 15 sacks on the season, so they are at least moving in the right direction. Looking ahead, New England hosts New York, a team that can put some points on the board. Fantasy owners should view the Patriots DST as more of a No. 2 option for next week.
News: New England faces Pittsburgh in Week 8, a team that has been clicking offensively lately. Ben Roethlisberger has nine touchdowns and just one interception over his last three games. New England's defense is giving up a the most yard through the air in the league so far this season, so containing Big Ben may be difficult. Opposing DSTs are averaging 9.14 Fantasy points per contest against the Steelers.
Analysis: The Patriots have intercepted eight passes this year, but Big Ben has been on top of his game recently and not making many mistakes. New England also has just 10 sacks on the year, which is on the lower end of the league as well. If the Patriots can't put pressure on Roethlisberger it could be a long day. Fantasy owners should view the Patriots DST as a No. 2 option for Week 8.
News:The Sports Xchange notes the Patriots head into the bye week with a 5-1 record, sitting alone atop the AFC East, mostly because of one of the most prolific offenses in the game thanks to the Tom Brady-led passing attack. But following Sunday's 20-16 win over the Cowboys, New England's defense also heads into the week off with a bit more confidence. After opening the year with seemingly game after game allowing opponents to put up 500 yards of total offense, the Patriots' defense has shown improvement leading up to the bye. Three weeks in a row the Patriots have held the Raiders, Jets and Cowboys to 19, 21 and 16 points respectively after giving up 21 or more in Weeks 1-3.
Analysis: The Patriots held Dallas to just 4 of 12 on third down (33 percent), just 1 of 3 in the red zone (33 percent) and gave Brady the extra chances he needed to turn in the fourth-quarter comeback to pull out the 20-16 victory that came thanks to an 8-yard touchdown to Aaron Hernandez with just 22 seconds to play. "The offense did a great job in the beginning of the season helping us out," linebacker Brandon Spikes concluded. "We struggled at the beginning of the year. It's about getting better. You are either getting better or you are getting worse." In fact given the short offseason, turnover on personnel and schematic alterations, the defense was preparing itself for adversity as early as August. But Bill Belichick is one of the greatest defensive minds in the game and the odds were in his favor to right the ship. Fantasy owners can get a little more confident starting the Patriots DST moving forward.
News: New England allowed Dallas QB Tony Romo to throw for more 300 yards, but still got him to make mistakes. Romo was picked off by DB Kyle Arrington on the opening drive of the game as Romo was under pressure. The Patriots sacked Romo twice on the day -- both by Andre Carter -- and they also would recover a fumble. New England would go on to win the game, 20-16, over Dallas.
Analysis: The Patriots have a bye next week and then return in Week 8 to face the Steelers. If they can get pressure on Big Ben they could make some noise. The one player they'll need back on the field is Jarod Mayo, who has missed two games with an injury. Fantasy owners should view the Patriots DST as a low-end option moving forward.
News: New England hosts Dallas in Week 6, a team that has plenty of offensive weapons. With some key components in the Cowboys offense dinged up, they might not be 100 percent for Sunday. Opposing defenses this year are averaging 13.25 Fantasy points per contest this season.
Analysis: The Patriots are still getting some players back and others up to speed on the defensive side of the ball. "The more I play, the more familiar I can get. Coach is not going to rush anything and he wants me to get my feet under me so I can play well," DL Albert Haynesworth said. "I feel OK. Im still trying to shake some things or whatever." Despite New England's sporadic play on defense, we view them as a low-end No. 1 DST option for Week 6.
News: The Patriots DST surrendered 21 points on just 255 yards of total offense in Week 5 against the Jets. The unit held New York to just 157 passing yards and even drew a few compliments from head coach Bill Belichick afterwards. "I thought we played better on defense," he said. "There were some good things to build on. Weve still got a long way to go." New England's DST racked up a pair of turnovers in the 30-21 contest.
Analysis: New England's defense was unusually stout on Sunday, especially in the passing game, which is where they have struggled thus far. However, from a Fantasy standpoint there isn't too much to get excited about. The unit did not force a turnover against the turnover-happy Jets and only registered two sacks. The Patriots will now face the Cowboys in Week 6, who can put up points in a hurry. Consider the unit a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST against Dallas.
News: The Patriots DST will likely be without LB Jerod Mayo for their Week 5 matchup against the Jets on Sunday. Mayo has officially be listed as doubtful for the contest after suffering a knee injury in last Sunday's win against Oakland. The Jets enter Sunday's contest ranked 25th in total offense, averaging 308 total yards and 25 points per game. New England's DST is ranked 25th overall, in terms of Fantasy points, having racked up six sacks while forcing nine turnovers thus far.
Analysis: Mayo has led the team in tackling the past three years, so this would be a huge loss for the unit that already has been struggling. New England has been giving up a ton of yards this season and actually rank last in total defense, allowing 477.5 yards per game. However, the Jets present a seemingly favorable matchup the way they have been struggling on offense and committing turnovers. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 option heading into Week 5.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) will likely miss six weeks with a medial collateral ligament sprain, citing a league source. Coach Bill Belichick was not ready to comment on the extent of the injury on Monday. I saw him in there today, Belichick said. Im not sure exactly where things are at. Well see where we are on Wednesday.
Analysis: Mayo has led the team in tackling the past three years, putting up 175 tackles last season. With the Patriots defense under-performing to date, this loss compounds their early-season woes. The Patriots have been giving up a ton of yardage this season and seem to be more apt to play in shootouts than in low-scoring affairs. This doesn't bode well for the Pats as a defensive unit in Fantasy, but a Bill Belichick defense is always worthy of keeping around in Fantasy -- even if you aren't looking to activate them for Week 5 against the Jets. However, the Jets offense does present a seemingly favorable matchup the way they have been struggling on offense and committing turnovers.
News: The Patriots defense gave up some yards to the Raiders in Week 4 but not many points. New England allowed 504 yards of total offense in the 31-19 win. While QB Jason Campbell threw for 344 yards with a touchdown, he was also picked off twice. The Patriots were unable to come up with a sack, however. LB Jerod Mayo left the game in the second quarter and accoring to ESPN.com he hurt the MCL in his left knee and could be out for a month.
Analysis: The Patriots have been very lackluster on defense so far this season as teams continue to move the ball against them. While their secondary and pass rush is suspect, their ability to put up points and control the ball allowed them to keep winning games. The Mayo injury does not help either so keep an eye on the situation going forward. But until hey start limiting opposing offenses, continue to view New England as a No. 2 Fantasy option. The Patriots DST should be considered as such in Week 5 against the Jets.
News: The Patriots defense will be put to the test in Week 4 against the Raiders. New England ranks 10th in the league against the run, giving up just under 92 yards per game, but Oakland leads the NFL in rushing, averaging 185 yards per contest. The difference in the game on Sunday could be through the air, where the Patriots rank dead last while the Raiders are 26th. The Patriots have the 26th-best DST, having posted six sacks and five interceptions.
Analysis: While the Patriots' offense can put up points with the best of them, they have to at times as their defense has been lack luster. The Raiders have one of the better running games in the league, and QB Jason Campbell has been very accurate when called upon. It could be another long week for New England so consider their DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 4.
News: The Patriots defense couldn't hold a 21-0 lead as Buffalo rallied for a 34-31 win in Week 3. New England allowed Buffalo to tally three offensive touchdowns and rack up 448 yards (79 rushing). The Patriots failed to sack QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, but did record two interceptions.
Analysis: Early on, it appeared as though New England might survive Week 3 without Patrick Chung, Ras-I Dowling and Albert Haynesworth, who were all out with injuries. But the defense got worn down as the game progressed and finally broke. It's hard to believe, but statistically the Patriots defense has been horrendous in 2011. The Patriots DST is at best a low-end Fantasy start heading into Week 4 against the Raiders, who have been surprisingly productive behind RB Darren McFadden this season.
News: Surprisingly, the Patriots head into Week 3 against the Bills as one of the worst defenses in the NFL. New England is second to last in total defense, allowing 479 yards per game, and is allowing 22.5 points per game. The Patriots aren't overlooking Buffalo either. The Bills are off to a 2-0 start thanks to the highest-scoring offense in the NFL (39.5 ppg). Buffalo is also seventh in total offense, averaging 422.5 yards per game.
Analysis: Believe it or not, but Sunday's game between the Bills and Patriots could be a high-scoring affair. It could remain ugly for the Patriots defense if safety Patrick Chung misses the game with a hand injury. Head coach Bill Belichick is a defensive guru, but the Patriots defense has had some weaknesses in 2011. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end Fantasy start for Week 3.
News: Every time San Diego threatened deep in New England territory, the Patriots defense stood tall. New England forced three turnovers inside its 35-yard line, leading to 17 points. The Patriots created four turnovers total, including two interceptions, and stopped the Chargers a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line, which started a 99-yard drive that ended with one of Tom Brady's two scoring passes to Rob Gronkowski.
Analysis: New England was effective at harassing San Diego QB Philip Rivers as he was constantly on the move in the pocket and was picked off twice for the second straight game. One of those picks came by 325-pound DT Vince Wilfork. He got his first career interception to halt a promising Chargers drive late in the first half, rumbling 28 yards on the return before getting tackles. While they still permitted 470 total yards, Fantasy owners should consider New England a quality No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 3 at Buffalo.
News: Entering its Week 2 matchup against San Diego, New England coach Bill Belichick described the Chargers offense as hard to defend. If you take one thing away they will hit you somewhere else, Belichick said. If you want to play deep, they will throw short. If you want to play short, they will throw deep. If you want to play man coverage, they can beat you in man routs. If you want to play zone coverage, they can spread the zones.
Analysis: The Patriots struggled against the pass during their Week 1 outing against Miami as Dolphins QB Chad Henne rolled to 416 passing yards and two touchdowns. New England's task on Sunday isn't any easier as Philip Rivers looks to throw for more than 300 yards in a game for the 22nd time in his career. The Chargers are likely to spread the wealth among its solid receiver corps after RB Mike Tolbert was shaken up in the team's season-opener, though he's still expected to play. Consider the Patriots a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in Week 2.
News: The Patriots defense had a hard time slowing down the Dolphins through the air in Week 1. New England allowed QB Chad Henne to throw for 416 yards with two touchdowns in the 34-28 win. Kyle Arrington was able to pick him off once, however, and they sacked Henne four times. While the Patriots struggled against the pass, they held the Dolphins to just 98 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Patriots defense was not very stellar on Monday night but most of the yardage they gave up came after the win was already secured. They were able to force one turnover and brought down Henne a few times but with San Diego and Phillip Rivers up next on the schedule, New England cannot afford to give up a ton of yards through the air again. The Chargers have a slightly more potent offense than the Dolphins so consider the Patriots DST as more of a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option for Week 2.
News: The Patriots DST will look to slow down the Dolphins during their Week 1 matchup on Monday night. Miami's offense ranked 11th in the league last year (323.1 ypg) and averaged 17.1 points per game. New England ranked 22nd in total defense last season, allowing 366.5 yards and 19.6 points per game. The Patriots DST ranked second, in terms of Fantasy points, racking up 36 sacks and 38 turnovers while scoring nine touchdowns.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks allowed a ton of yards and points last season, but still wound up as one of the top scoring units, in terms of Fantasy points. That was largely in part to the nine touchdowns the unit was able score, which ranked second among all DST units. New England allowed a total of 21 combined points and forced six turnovers in two meetings against the Dolphins last season and should be able to give the Dolphins fits once again this year. Consider the Patriots DST a No. 1 option heading into Week 1 against Miami.
News: In a surprising move, the Patriots acquired defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth from the Redskins in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2013. He originally signed with the Redskins in February of 2009 for a deal that included $41 million in guaranteed money. Haynesworth is expected to be a key part of the team's defensive line rotation.
Analysis: Haynesworth won't be counted on to be a major player in the defense like he was in prior stops, but he will be a factor on passing downs as a pass rusher from the interior. His presence, assuming he's a good soldier in Bill Belichick's regime, only enhances the value of the Patriots DST. Consider them a No. 1 unit worth a late-round pick on Draft Day.
News: The Patriots defense surrendered 28 points on 314 yards of total offense in Sunday's Divisional Playoff win. New England allowed 120 yards on the ground and were unable to turnover Mark Sanchez in the contest. Sanchez threw for three touchdowns in the 28-21 victory. The unit gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter and has now allowed a combined 59 points in their last two home playoff games.
Analysis: The Patriots DST unit got off to a slow start this season, but defensive genius Bill Belichick figured things out as he went along. While the unit still ranked near the bottom of the league in pass defense, the Patriots DST improved as the season went on and were given a boost by a strong return game. New England should be able to sure up their defense in the offseason and should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into 2011.
News: The Patriots DST held Miami to seven points and only 250 yards in a Week 17 rout. They racked up five sacks and produced two turnovers -- a fumble and an interception.
Analysis: This DST unit got off to a slow start this season, but defensive genius Bill Belichick figured things out as he went along, and the juggernaut of an offense kept them relatively fresh. If this unit stays intact, it will be a solid No. 1 pick in 2011.
News: The Patriots DST held the Bills to three points and 369 yards in a Week 16 victory, but the real damage came as New England forced seven turnovers -- three interceptions and four fumbles. The Pats also added a pair of sacks.
Analysis: This Patriots defensive unit has simply been on fire over the last month, racking up the Fantasy points in various different ways. In Week 17, several starters might be rested with nothing on the line vs. Miami, but New England had a field day special teams-wise against the Dolphins earlier this season and the DST remains a must-start Fantasy option.
News: Coming into the Week 15 game against the Packers, the Patriots defense seemed to have a likable situation with starting QB Aaron Rodgers (concussion) sidelined. Instead, QB Matt Flynn threw for three touchdowns in his first NFL start. Still, New England neutralized the third-year pro when it mattered most. They took the lead on a Kyle Arrington interception of Flynn, that he returned for a 36-yard score after breaking four tackles on the way to the end zone. Then the pass rush took over the night, eventually sealing the victory by sacking Flynn, and recovering his fumble with no time remaining. Five different Patriots recorded a sack. Green Bay scored 27 points and totaled 369 total yards.
Analysis: The Patriots defense looked shaky at times, allowing Flynn to throw for the three scores, the first of which on a 66-yard heave to James Jones. The bottom-of-the-barrel pass defense looked that way for most of the night. Still, the turnovers and the pass rush bailed the unit out and the TD capped it off. In Week 16, it should get a bit easier against the Bills offense, although they put up 30 points against New England in Week 3. Still, we consider the Patriots DST to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit. Look for the Bills to kick away from offensive lineman Dan Connolly, who returned a kickoff 71 yards on Sunday night, establishing the NFL record for longest return by an o-lineman in NFL history.
News: The Patriots defense has been playing its best football of the season over the last two games, and now a little bit of good fortune has been sprinkled into the mix. A day before their Week 15 matchup with the Packers, Pro Bowl QB Aaron Rodgers was been ruled out after failing to receive medical clearance to play because of a concussion. That means Matt Flynn is geared up for his first NFL start. New England's defense has shut down the last two QBs they have faced -- Mark Sanchez and Jay Cutler -- to the tune of five interceptions without allowing a single passing touchdown. The Patriots have accounted for 10 interceptions over the last four games. Flynn threw a pick in relief of Rodgers last week against the Lions.
Analysis: The Patriots passing defense was the doormat of the NFL for most of the season, but they have more than taken care of their holes in the last couple of games. Now they prepare for an unproved QB, and you have to figure Bill Belichick will have something special planned for Flynn come Sunday night. Couple the drop in passing with the already-mediocre Green Bay ground game, and New England looks like a top-notch defense in Week 15, and we see them playing that way. The Patriots DST should be utilized as a No. 1 Fantasy unit on Sunday.
News: The Patriots defense allowed just three points in their last outing and had a similarly dominant performance in Week 14 against the Bears. New England held Chicago to just 185 yards of total offense in the 36-7 win. LB Gary Guyton returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown and also had an interception. The game-time temperature was 26 degrees, and with snow and a 30-mph wind swirling through the stadium, visibility wasn't great. But that did stop the Patriots from picking off QB Jay Cutler twice and sacking him two times. Guyon and DB Brandon Meriweather supplied the picks for New England while DLs Eric Moore and Gerard Warren provided the sacks. The Patriots almost had another score on special teams, but WR Julian Edelman's 71-yard punt returned was negated on a holding penalty.
Analysis: The Patriots defense has been dominant over the last two weeks, limiting their opponents to just 10 total points while putting up 81 of their own. New England has scored seven non-offensive touchdowns this season and have become adept at causing turnovers. They will face off against a Packers team next week that might be without star QB Aaron Rodgers, as he left Sunday's game with a concussion. Fantasy owners should keep an eye out for Rodger's status but with the way the Patriots DST as been playing lately, they should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 15.
News: After holding the Jets to just three points in the last outing, the Patriots will face a Bears offense in Week 14 that has been able to put up some points in recent weeks. Chicago has averaged 24 points per contest during their five-game winning streak, but rank 26th and 22nd in the league in passing and rushing, respectively. WRs Devin Hester and Johnny Knox are two of the speediest wide receivers in the game so don't be surprised if New England plays a lot of zone and off coverage to prevent those two from making big plays.
Analysis: New England had three interceptions in their last outing and will face a quarterback in Week 14 that has thrown over 50 in the last three year -- Jay Cutler. The Patriots have been rolling of late but so have the Bears. Sunday's game will be played in frigid, windy weather so don't expect huge passing numbers from either teams. Chicago's offense has been lack-luster this season but they always seem to find a way to win. Consider the Patriots DST a No. 2 option for Week 14.
News: The Patriots did everything right on defense in Week 13 against the Jets. New England's 32nd-ranked pass defense intercepted three of QB Mark Sanchez's passes and sacked him once in the 45-3 win. New York was able to muster 301 yards of offense on Monday night, but costly turnovers led to the trouncing. The Patriots received interceptions from DBs James Sanders and Devin McCourty, and rookie LB Brandon Spikes picked one off in the red zone. LB Tully Banta-Cain supplied the only sack in the blowout.
Analysis: Despite allowing 152 yards on the ground in Week 13, the Patriots defense had their best performance of the year and took revenge against their division foe. McCourty now has six interceptions on the year and is two away from tying the team rookie interception record which Mike Haynes set in 1976. New England needed to limit New York's passing game to have a chance on Monday night, and they did just that. They will face a lack-luster, yet efficient offense in the Bears next week so continue to view the Patriots DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 14.
News: The Patriots defense has given up some points in recent games and will face a Jets offense in Week 13 that is playing well of late. New England has given up an average of 26 points in their last three games while New York has scored 27. The Patriots enter Sunday ranked dead last in the league against the pass and 16th against the run, while the Jets are second-best in the NFL in rushing and 18th in passing.
Analysis: The Patriots allowed 28 points and 336 yards of total offense to the Jets when they met in Week 2 but a lot has changed since then. New York got WR Santonio Holmes back from suspension and QB Mark Sanchez has been playing at a higher level in recent weeks. New England has not done a good job on defense and could be in for a long game if they can't limit the passing game on Sunday. The Jets have given up an average of 6.1 Fantasy points to opposing DSTs this season, so consider the Patriots a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 13.
News: The Patriots DST had two sacks of Shaun Hill and two interceptions from Hill -- both by CB Devin McCourty. The Lions threw for 285 yards and ran cumulatively for 129 yards, scoring 24 points in the process.
Analysis: Not a terrible week for the Patriots DST, but next week they'll get the red-hot Jets into their place for a big AFC East showdown. Consider other options before going with the Patriots DST in Week 13.
News: The Patriots defense played well in Week 11 against the Colts, but still needed a late turnover to preserve the 31-28 victory. New England took a 31-14 lead into the fourth quarter, however, Peyton Manning lead Indianapolis on two straight scoring drives to pull the Colts within 31-28. The Colts were on the move again late in the fourth, but James Sanders was able to pick off Manning inside the 10-yard line to wrap up the win. The Patriots defense surrendered 28 points on 467 yards of total offense, but were able to force three turnovers (all interceptions) in the victory.
Analysis: The Patriots defense played well for the most part on Sunday and held the Colts' offense in check until the fourth quarter. While the unit did not record a sack, they did force three interceptions. Now the unit will look to regroup on a short week as they travel to Detroit to take on the Lions on Thanksgiving. Detroit does have some weapons on offense and can put up points in a hurry. Consider the Patriots a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST on Thursday.
News: The Patriots defense might have a tough time slowing down the Colts high-powered offense in Week 11. Indianapolis enters Sunday's game ranked fourth in total offense (379.3 ypg) and are averaging 26.7 points per game. New England is 29th in total defense, allowing 390.8 yards per game. The Patriots DST is ranked 14th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 18 sacks and forced 15 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks second with six defensive touchdowns on the season, but the unit is has allowed a ton of yards and points. The Colts due have some key offensive players injured entering Sunday, which could benefit New England. Still, as long as Peyton Manning is under center for Indianapolis, they are extremely potent on offense and can put up points in a hurry. Consider the Patriots a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 11.
News: The Patriots began the Week 10 game against the Steelers with punishing hits as they jumped out to an early lead. The physical play continued and Steelers WR Hines Ward was knocked out of the game. S Pat Chung, who was in on that hit, said one big point of emphasis on defense was to match the physicality of the Steelers. "We knew they were a team that liked to hit you," he said. Instead, the Patriots controlled the line-of-scrimmage and held explosive RB Rashard Mendenhall to just 50 yards rushing. They sacked QB Ben Roethlisberger five times. S James Sanders intercepted one of his passes and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. The Steelers rallied late, when the game was out of reach, to rack up 425 yards and 26 points.
Analysis: The entire game was dominated more than the score indicates. The Steelers could not get the running game going at all, and Roethlisberger could rarely enjoy a comfortable pocket. In Week 11, the Pats will look for a repeat effort against the Colts, who sport the NFL's third ranked offense in yards (379.3) and points (26.7) per game. Look for New England to be a No. 2 unit in Fantasy play heading into that matchup.
News: The Patriots defense was gashed in the Week 9 loss to the Browns to the tune of 34 points and 404 yards allowed, including Peyton Hillis' 184 yards on the ground. In Week 10, the Patriots get another AFC North team, the Steelers. They will have to deal with Rashard Mendenhall, the NFL's No. 7 rusher with 702 yards. "We just have to keep chipping at the rock," LB Jerod Mayo said. "We were headed in the right direction before we had a hiccup on the road. We have a lot of good players on this side of the ball."
Analysis: Mayo thinks that it was a hiccup against Cleveland, but the Steelers have a more powerful attack than the Browns and the Sunday night contest is also on the road for New England. They do face Ben Roethlisberger, who has cooled off in his last two games, finding the end zone just once after scoring five times in his first two games back from suspension. Still, the Patriots have allowed nearly 400 yards per game this season, good for 29th in the NFL. Consider them a No. 2 Fantasy option at-best against Pittsburgh.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 34 points and 404 yards to the Browns in a Week 9 defeat. They recovered one fumble but failed to make a single sack.
Analysis: The Patriots have been giving up big yardage numbers to opponents lately and it finally caught up to them on Sunday as RB Peyton Hillis rumbled over, through and around the New England front seven. Things won't get any easier in Week 10 when New England visits the Steelers, so those of you starting this unit in 78 percent of leagues might well want to look elsewhere.
News: The Patriots DST allowed over 400 yards of total offense in Week 8 against the Vikings but came up with big plays when they had too. The unit surrendered just 18 points to Minnesota and stopped Adrian Peterson on a 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line late in the second half to keep the score tied heading into halftime. While the Patriots recorded just one sack, the unit put constant pressure on Brett Favre and eventually knocked him out of the game in the fourth quarter. DL Myron Pryor delivered a vicious blow under Favre's chin, which left him bloodied and a bit woozy. The Patriots were able to keep Peterson under 100 yards and also had an interception in the 28-18 victory.
Analysis: The Patriots have now held the Chargers and Vikings' offenses in check over the last two weeks and have been playing at a high level all season. While they do allow teams to rack up the yards on them from time to time, New England has been able to force six turnovers and always seem to come up with a big stop when they need too. The Patriots face a Cleveland team in Week 9 that is averaging just 16.9 points per game. Fantasy owners should consider the Patriots a No. 1 Fantasy DST against the Browns.
News: The Patriots DST, who allowed 20 points on 367 yards of total offense in Week 7 against the Chargers, will face a Minnesota team in Week 8, who still doesn't know if Brett Favre will start at quarterback. The Vikings are ranked 26th in total offense and are averaging just 18.5 points per game. The Patriots boast the leagues ninth ranked rushing defense and the unit ranks 11th in terms of Fantasy points with 80 on the season.
Analysis: The Patriots were able to hold the Chargers high-powered offense in check last Sunday and while Minnesota does have plenty of weapons, their uncertainty at quarterback and frequency to turn the ball over gives the Patriots DST a chance to score a touchdown this week. The Patriots have also been very good on special teams this season. Consider them a No. 1 Fantasy DST against the Vikings.
News: The Patriots DST surrendered 20 points on 363 yards in Week 7 against the Chargers, but was able to force four turnovers in the 23-20 win. The unit forced three fumbles and picked off Philip Rivers in the victory. New England did surrender 325 passing yards, but that stat is a bit skewed as the Chargers were playing from behind the entire game. The Patriots held San Diego to 38 net yards rushing and recorded two sacks in the victory.
Analysis: The Patriots defense played well on Sunday and were able to hold the Chargers high-powered offense in check most of the game. They did allow the Chargers to score 17 points in the fourth quarter, but the four turnovers the unit created were a big reason the Patriots came away with the victory. Things won't get any easier for New England as they welcome the Vikings to town in Week 8. Minnesota can put up points in a hurry but can be a bit turnover prone with Brett Favre at the helm. Consider them a low-end Fantasy DST heading into Week 8.
News: The New England DST will be tested in Week 7 against the Chargers. The Chargers rank No. 1 in total offense while averaging an impressive 26.2 points per game. San Diego averages a whopping 432.7 yards per game with 316.2 of those coming through the air. That doesn't bode well for the Patriots, who are ranked 29th against the pass this season, allowing 273.4 yards per game and have surrendered 11 passing touchdowns.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks 14th in terms of scoring with 66 Fantasy points, but most of those were racked up in Week 4 against the Dolphins. They will most definitely will have their hands full trying to contain Phillip Rivers and San Diego's high-powered passing attack. Fantasy owners should definitely look at other options heading into Week 7. Consider the unit a No. 2 Fantasy DST unit if you can't find one.
News: The Patriots had three sacks of QB Joe Flacco and a forced fumble in their Week 6 overtime win over the Ravens. They allowed Flacco to throw for 258 yards and the Ravens to accumulate 99 total rushing yards while holding them to 20 points.
Analysis: The Patriots defense and special teams will have their hands full in Week 7 at San Diego, a tough matchup to say the least. The special-teams unit could register a score, but the defense could struggle against an explosive San Diego offense. Consider other options before rolling with the Patriots DST in Week 7.
News: Bill Belichick knows that the Baltimore offense coming to Foxboro on Sunday is much different than the one he saw twice last year. The Ravens have added Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh to their receiving corps, but it's not paying off in the stat sheets. Through five games the Ravens have five passing touchdowns with three belonging to Anquan Boldin, all of which coming in the win vs. Cleveland. Baltimore does have six rushing touchdowns and they're averaging 328 total yards of offense per game. "Theyve got more weapons. Theyre well-balanced," Belichick said this week. "... [Joe] Flacco has spread the ball around, theyve gotten good production out of their backs running and catching. They give you a lot to defend. Its a good scheme, theyre well coached and theyve got a lot of good players."
Analysis: The Patriots DST was amazing in their last game when they accounted for three touchdowns at Miami. Don't expect the same feat here -- if anything they'll pick off Joe Flacco once or twice and otherwise attempt to pin down the Ravens. That's a tall order seeing as how the New England secondary has been rocked in recent weeks and Ray Rice's history against the Pats has been sparkling. Consider other options before going with the Patriots DST in Week 6.
News: The Patriots defense did a solid job against the Dolphins in Week 4, but their special teams did even better. New England blocked a field goal, blocked a punt and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the 41-14 win. DB Pat Chung blocked both the field-goal try and the punt with DB Kyle Arrington returning it for the touchdown. WR Brandon Tate took a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown and the Patriots added another score on defense. Chung picked off QB Chad Henne and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown to ice the game late. New England intercepted four passes in total and sacked Miami quarterbacks twice in the victory.
Analysis: The Patriots DST had one of the most productive games in recent memory and dominated in almost every facet in Week 4. Despite giving up 317 passing yards and two touchdowns, they more than made up for it by causing turnovers and turning them into points. New England struggled a bit in the first half but were able to hold Miami in check during the second half. Tate has returned to kicks for touchdowns so far this season and has given a huge boost to New England. The Patriots are on a bye next week but will face off against the Ravens on Oct. 17. Consider the Patriots DST a No. 1 Fantasy option after their dominant performance in Week 4.
News: While everyone has been piling on the Patriots defense of late, QB Tom Brady has chosen to accentuate the positives, The Sports Xchange reports. "The defense is opportunistic," Brady said. "They made a couple of big plays there at the end (of Week 3 against the Bills) which we really needed. The thing about the defense is they have a lot of talented players. They're all first and second round picks over there, it's not like they can't play. Playing against them in training camp, I know the kind of plays they can make, so you're right, I think not having quite the experience as the offense is one thing. Having the youth and excitement, it's a very fast defense that can make some plays and I have a lot of confidence in those guys."
Analysis: In terms of points allowed, this is the worst start the Patriots have gotten off to defensively since Bill Belichick began coaching New England in 2000. Through three games, they've allowed 82 points. No other Patriots' team coached by the Patriots had even allowed 70 points through the first three games until this season. It's not like we didn't see this coming after New England struggled in the preseason on defense. But Belichick is a defensive genius, so it might only be a matter of time before New England has its bite back on defense. In Week 4, the Patriots welcome in Miami. The Dolphins are averaging 319.3 yards and 17.3 points per game. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 4.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 374 yards and 30 points to the Bills in a Week 3 win. They did manage two interceptions and a sack.
Analysis: The Patriots came into this game ranked a lowly 26th in total defense, but everyone surely expected them to shut down a Bills team that had scored 17 total points in their first two contests. In Week 4, New England play down in Miami against another team that has struggled to move the ball, but owners in many leagues might be thinking about hitting the waiver wire after this brutal performance.
News: The Patriots defense might only rank 26th through two games this season, but they have a great matchup in Week 3 against a Bills offense that ranks dead last in the NFL at 176 total yards a game.
Analysis: The Pats have looked surprisingly mediocre so far in 2010, but Week 3 provides one of those matchups that make Fantasy owners salivate. Turnovers could be plentiful while yards and points against likely won't be for this New England unit, so start them in all formats for Week 3.
News: The Patriots defense gave up 336 total yards and 28 points against the Jets in week 2. Although New England only allowed 136 yards on the ground, New York torched their secondary for 220 yards through the air with three touchdowns. The Patriots did not record an interception in the 28-14 loss but sacked QB Mark Sanchez three times.
Analysis: The Patriots DST had a stellar performance in the season opener but had a hard time stooping the Jets in Week 2. Their special teams did not provide the impact like it did in Week 1 and the defense was unable to force a turnover in the loss. New England should have better treading against the Bills in Week 3. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option against Buffalo.
News: The Patriots face a Jets offense in Week 2 that was only able to muster 176 yards of offense in their opener. They were unable to score a touchdown against the Ravens and had a hard time getting the running game going. While New York struggled, the Patriots DST scored twice in Week 1. The first touchdown came on a 59-yard interception return by Gary Guyton, and the second touchdown was a 97-yard kickoff return by Brandon Tate. They also held the Bengals to 24 points and 428 yards of offense. New England held the Jets to just 30 points combined in two games last season.
Analysis: The Patriots only allowed 87 yards rushing in Week 1 but over 300 yards passing. Luckily, the Jets are more efficient at running the ball, which plays into New England's strong point. Special teams could be the difference in the game, which the Patriots showed that they excel at. Fantasy owners should consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Jets.
News: The Patriots DST played great in Sunday's Week 1 game against Cincinnati. New England won 38-24, but the Patriots DST scored twice. The first touchdown came on a 59-yard interception return by Gary Guyton in the second quarter, and the second touchdown was a 97-yard kickoff return by Brandon Tate. The Patriots also had one sack and one fumble recovery and recorded 77 total tackles.
Analysis: The Patriots DST should be considered a quality Fantasy unit in all formats. There was some concern with the youth movement on defense, but cornerbacks Deon Butler and Devin McCourty played well and linebackers Jerod Mayo, Tully Banta-Cain and Guyton did a good job of making plays and tackles. We consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Jets, especially if Tate can continue this type of play on special teams.
News: The New England Patriots lost a key player Tuesday when Leigh Bodden, their best cornerback, was placed on injured reserve. Bodden, who led the Patriots with five interceptions last season, went on the season-ending list with a shoulder injury. He had been bothered by a knee injury earlier in training camp and returned to practice last week. He played in Thursday night's 36-35 exhibition loss to the St. Louis Rams but didn't start. The Patriots did not say which shoulder Bodden injured. The loss of Bodden could thrust first-round draft pick Devin McCourty from Rutgers into a starting spot. The other first stringer is expected to be Darius Butler, a second-round pick last year from Connecticut.
Analysis: Losing Bodden just adds to the Patriots' problems on defense in the preseason. New England is allowing a shocking 344.3 yards and 23.3 points per game. Patriots coach Bill Belichick hasn't been pleased with his team, but luckily it is just the preseason. However, you know opposing teams are now going to test a young secondary once the season begins, so it will be interesting to see how New England responds. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option on Draft Day since their track record is a good one under Belichick.
News: New England went into Thursday's preseason game against the Rams as heavy favorites since rookie QB Sam Bradford was making his first career start. When the whistle blew, St. Louis escaped with a 36-35 win, which came on a last-second field goal from Josh Brown. "(I'm) disappointed in the whole game," New England coach Bill Belichick said Friday, "regardless of how the last kick turned out." New England had trouble stopping Bradford, who completed 15 of 22 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. St. Louis finished with 30 first downs and 462 yards. Even though it was a preseason game, Belichick is uneasy about his defense. "I think that the way your team develops its fundamentals and its foundation in the early part of training camp and the preseason definitely is important in the big picture," he said. "If it wasn't, then we wouldn't do it. But, that being said, there's certainly a lot of unknowns going into the season."
Analysis: Belichick cut his teeth as a defensive coach and prides himself on always putting out a strong defensive unit, so it's no shock to see him upset as his team is allowing 23.3 points per game in the preseason. The Patriots are also yielding 344.3 yards per game. Not good for a defense that was 11th in the NFL in total defense (320.3 ypg) and fifth in scoring defense (17.8 ppg) last season. We expect a much better effort from New England once the games begin to count, so don't worry about its preseason performance. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option on Draft Day.
News: The Patriots DST added plenty of players in the NFL Draft. New England drafted CB Devin McCourty in Round 1, DE Jermaine Cunningham in Round 2, LB Brandon Spikes in Round 2, DT Brandon Deaderick in Round 7 and DT Kade Weston in Round 7. The Patriots also released LB Adalius Thomas following the draft.
Analysis: The Patriots need to improve the defense, and the addition of McCourty, Cunningham and Spikes should help. All three could start, and Cunningham could replace the departed Thomas. Consider the Patriots DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option coming into the season, and they are worth a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: For the fourth straight year, the team traded in the first round and picked a new secondary member early, taking cornerback Devin McCourty of Rutgers with its opening selection on Thursday night. In 52 college games, McCourty had six interceptions, three fumble recoveries, 2 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles. He also excelled on special teams with six blocked punts, one blocked field goal attempt and a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Belichick said McCourty is a rare defensive back because he can play on all four downs - the first three on defense and the fourth on punt plays. "There aren't too many players who can impact the game" that way, Belichick said.
Analysis: McCourty joins a secondary that includes 2007 first-round pick Brandon Meriweather, a safety, and three second-rounders - cornerback Terrence Wheatley, taken in 2008, and safety Pat Chung and cornerback Darius Butler in 2009. He'll battle for playing time in camp this summer but should be a starter before the end of the season. We'd like to see New England address their pass rush before we get excited about their DST in 2010. They remain more of a top-end No. 2 DST than a low-end No. 1 option; you might find them off waivers during the season.
News: The New England Patriots agreed to terms on a long-term deal with Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork, keeping the big man with the team that he's spent his career with. The Patriots put the franchise tag on Wilfork last month, keeping him from becoming a free agent and giving the sides more time to work out a contract. Wilfork announced the deal on his Twitter feed and Patriots spokesman Stacey James confirmed Saturday that an agreement had been reached. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ESPN.com, citing an NFL source, said the contract was for five years and $40 million.
Analysis: Wilfork is a big part of what the Patriots do defensively, and he's very good at stuffing the opposing team's run game. Though their secondary needs an upgrade or two, consider the Patriots DST a borderline starting Fantasy option for now.
News: The Patriots have put the franchise tag on Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork in an effort to continue negotiating a long-term agreement with the six-year veteran. They said that agreement has been their top contractual priority and Wilfork remains a significant part of their plans. Wilfork has said he would not be happy if the team put the franchise tag on him. The Patriots have the right to match any offer for him or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if they don't.
Analysis: Wilfork is a big part of what the Patriots do defensively, so if they were to lose him their run defense would take a tremendous hit. For now consider the Patriots DST a borderline starting Fantasy option -- and that's assuming Wilfork stays.
News: The Boston Globe reports Patriots DL Vince Wilfork is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and he might have played his last game with New England following Sunday's loss to Baltimore in the first round of the playoffs. "As the time ticked off that clock, it kinda dawned on me," Wilfork said after a 13-tackle effort against the Ravens. "I told my teammates, the guys I play with on that defense, 'I don't know if this is the last game I play with you or not, but if it is, man, I love you and I'm gonna miss you.' We'll go from here and see what happens." Wilfork said he wants to remain with the Patriots, and "I said that from Day 1, and I'm still backing up those words. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't have been out there playing for this team this year."
Analysis: Wilfork could be hit with the franchise tag, a one-year offer for the average of the top five salaries at a player's position. That would allow the team to match any free agent offer or receive two first-round picks if its declines to match. The tag restricts a player's market as an unrestricted free agent. When asked if he would be upset if he were tagged, Wilford said "Of course I would." Keep an eye on what happens with Wilfork. He has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues as a run-stuffer, but he's a key member to the Patriots defense and his presence improves their DST value.
News: The Patriots DST was limited Sunday at Houston with only one sack, one interception and one forced fumble. Darius Butler had three kickoff returns for 70 yards, Matt Slater had two kickoff returns for 62 yards and Isaiah Stanback had one kickoff return for 22 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST should play well in the playoffs, especially in Round 1 at home. New England has struggled on the road, but they are still a solid Fantasy option in all formats.
News: The Patriots DST played well Sunday against Jacksonville in a 35-7 victory. The Patriots had two interceptions, one forced fumble and two sacks. Wes Welker had one punt return for 9 yards, and Julian Edelman had one kickoff return for 16 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST took advantage of an inept Jacksonville offense. They will struggle a little bit in Week 17 at Houston, so consider the Patriots a No. 2 DST in the season finale.
News: Patriots defensive linemen Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork are listed as questionable for Week 16 vs. Jacksonville. Warren is dealing with an ankle injury while Wilfork has a foot ailment. Both missed the team's last game at Buffalo.
Analysis: If both play, the Patriots DST looks a lot better. Without them, there's a chance RB Maurice Jones-Drew has a solid afternoon and puts a lot of yards on the Patriots. Consider the DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: New England defeated the Buffalo Bills in Week 15, 17-10. The Patriots DST limited Buffalo to 241 yards in the game and managed to sack QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards a combined six times with Tully Banta-Cain notching three of them. The Patriots forced two turnovers as they picked Fitzpatrick off and also recovered a fumble by Josh Reed.
Analysis: The Patriots DST hasn't exactly been lighting up the Fantasy world but should be able to hold the Jaguars down in Week 16. We like the Patriots DST as a usable Fantasy unit in any format for that game.
News: The Patriots have listed DL Vince Wilfork (foot) as out for Week 15 at Buffalo.
Analysis: Wilfork has minimal Fantasy when healthy, so IDP owners won't be too concerned about this news. However, his absence will certainly be felt by the Patriots defense. Still, the unit is worth using in most leagues against the Bills.
News: The Patriots DST held the Panthers to 305 yards and 10 points in a Week 14 win over Carolina. New England failed to record a turnover, but did manage two sacks.
Analysis: The Patriots DST hasn't exactly been lighting up the Fantasy world lately, but they at least held Carolina to just 10 points on Sunday. The lack of turnovers hurt a bit, but they'll get a chance to redeem themselves in Week 15 at Buffalo. Consider the Patriots in all leagues as a No. 1 option for that matchup, especially if the weather is bad.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 22 points and 416 yards to the Dolphins in a Week 13 loss. They did tally one interception and a sack.
Analysis: The Patriots have seen their Fantasy value drop as this season has progressed, and they have been especially vulnerable through the air lately. Things should improve in Week 14 though, when they host the Panthers. Consider them a decent No. 1 option for that favorable matchup.
News: New England did not fare very well on Monday night at New Orleans in Week 12. It was more like a blood bath as the Patriots secondary couldn't stop any part of the Saints' passing attack. The Patriots DST coughed up 480 total yards in the game as they lost 38-17. The DST managed just one sack by Adalius Thomas and did not pick Drew Brees off once. The only fumble recovery they managed came moments after Sedrick Ellis recovered a Laurence Maroney fumble on the same play.
Analysis: The Patriots couldn't get to Brees, couldn't stop him from throwing for five touchdowns and didn't get a single solid turnover in the game. They had one lone sack and were just dismal on the biggest stage on Monday night. We expect them to turn things around in Week 13 at Miami because coach Bill Belichick won't stand for this kind of performance. New England's DST is, at best, a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 13 at Miami.
News: The defense Bill Belichick didn't want to put on the field a week ago kept the offense of the New York Jets off it Sunday. Leigh Bodden had three of the four interceptions thrown by Mark Sanchez and the New England Patriots defense allowed just one touchdown and 226 yards in a 31-14 win in Week 11. In the first half against the Jets, Bodden returned an interception 53 yards for the game's first touchdown and the Patriots held the Jets to 34 yards and two first downs. The Patriots also got one fumble recovery and a pair of sacks from Tully Banta-Cain.
Analysis: They questioned Belichick for going for it on fourth-and-2 at his 28-yard line rather than punt to the Indianapolis Colts and hope his defense could stop Peyton Manning in Week 10. The play failed and Manning and the Colts moved 29 yards to Manning's scoring pass and a decisive extra point in their 35-34 win. Now the critics of the Patriots coach can take a week off. You knew the Patriots had to bounce back strong after their disappointing loss and they did just that. Now, New England faces another tough challenge in the Saints in Week 12. They have a good offense, so the Patriots DST is at best a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Patriots DST totaled two interceptions and a sack of Peyton Manning in Week 10 at Indianapolis. They allowed 35 points and over 300 yards passing, not to mention four passing touchdowns.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will be useful in Week 11 when they take on the Jets. Expect them to create some turnovers and be resourceful against Mark Sanchez. They'll be worth starting for that matchup.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 17 points and 334 yards to the Dolphins in Week 9. While they did tally two sacks, they failed to record a single turnover.
Analysis: The Patriots did a good job vs. the Miami run on Sunday, but the lack of turnovers really hurts their Fantasy value. Things won't get any easier in Week 10 when New England visits Indianapolis, so you might want to avoid this DST unit outside of deeper leagues.
News: Patriots defensive end Mike Wright could get more playing time after Jarvis Green reportedly underwent knee surgery that is expected to sideline him for at least one game. Green reportedly had surgery during the Patriots bye week after starting all seven games this season, according to Comcast SportsNet. Wright leads New England with four sacks, and his role in his fifth season with the team increased when Richard Seymour was traded to Oakland before the opener.
Analysis: This is a bad week for the Pats defense to be thin vs. the run as the Dolphins come calling in Week 9. Consider this unit good enough to start, but you might want to check out other options before finalizing your lineup.
News: The Patriots DST allowed just 240 yards and seven points to the Buccaneers in Week 7 and returned one of their three interceptions for a touchdown. They also added three sacks in the victory.
Analysis: When the matchup is right, the Patriots DST is clearly a solid starting unit in all Fantasy leagues. They abused the Bucs as expected on Sunday, and will now get a week off to heal up as New England has a bye in Week 8.
News:Tom Brady threw six touchdown passes -- five in one quarter, an NFL mark -- and the Patriots sent the Titans plummeting to a new low in their winless season with a 59-0 win Week 6. In one 17-play stretch in the second quarter, the Titans gave up three scoring passes, lost two fumbles and an interception and even had a roughing-the-passer penalty on one of those touchdowns. One positive note: Kerry Collins threw his only completion of the first half in that miserable span. He completed only 2 of 12 passes for minus-7 yards. Vince Young replaced him after Brian Hoyer's touchdown in the second half and threw an interception, one of five Tennessee turnovers (two interceptions), on his first play. His only other pass was an incompletion. The Patriots defense allowed just 186 yards but recorded no sacks. "You never go into a game thinking it's going to be like this," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "It's just our day today."
Analysis: Finally, we get a performance from the Patriots defense that we have come to expect. They have had their ups-and-downs in 2009 while having to battle some injuries (LB Jerrod Mayo) and haven't been as dominating of a Belichick defense as past teams. But Week 6 definitely looked liked vintage New England. Despite some inconsistency, the Patriots DST is still a viable Fantasy option in most formats. New England plays Tampa Bay in Week 7.
News: Versus reports that LB Junior Seau has signed with the Patriots. The network had worked with Seau on a television show and announced the signing on Tuesday. "I'm very fortunate and honored to be involved with two class organizations - the New England Patriots and Versus," said Seau. "I want to thank the management of both for making my return to the NFL with the New England Patriots a reality."
Analysis: The Patriots are looking for Seau to help slow down the opposing teams' run game, though he may not be filling in as a starter right away. He should ultimately help the Patriots play better, especially against the run. The Patriots DST is a decent option in Week 6 against the struggling Titans.
News: After holding Denver to just seven points in the first half, the Patriots defense could not make a second-half stand against the Broncos in Week 5 and eventually lost 20-17 in overtime. Trailing 17-10 with 9:59 left, Kyle Orton led Denver on a 98-yard game-tying drive. Among the plays were a 14-yard completion to Jabar Gaffney, a screen to Knowshon Moreno that sprung for 27. A 7-yard completion to Eddie Royal, who finished with 10 catches for 90 yards. Brandon Marshall, who scored the game-winner last week against Dallas, did the honors this time, too, catching a pass on the sideline, then spinning and breaking a tackle for an 11-yard score that tied the game. The teams traded a pair of possessions around midfield to close regulation, then the Broncos won the toss and drove 53 yards to set up the winning field goal. Denver posted 424 yards while New England got just two sacks and one interceptions. New England also had one fumble recovery.
Analysis: It definitely seemed as though the thin air in Colorado helped wear down the Patriots in the second half. The defense also didn't get any morale support from the offense that also sputtered down the stretch. It was definitely not a Bill Belichick-like effort. You don't see that very often, but even the best teams struggle at times. The Patriots did get Jerrod Mayo back from a knee injury in Week 5 and his presence should help moving forward. Consider the Patriots DST a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 6 against the Titans.
News: The Patriots DST had a fumble recovery, two sacks an interception and a forced fumble Sunday against the Ravens. They gave up 21 points and 363 yards. Kevin Faulk had two punt returns for 13 yards, and Laurence Maroney had four kickoff returns for 75.2 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST continues to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option. However, they are worth using in Week 5 at Denver, especially if they can continue to force turnovers.
News: Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is practicing again but is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Ravens. Nose tackle Vince Wilfork is questionable for the game. Mayo, last year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, practiced for the first time Friday since straining right knee ligaments in New England's season opener. He had limited participation in the practice after missing two games. Initial reports had indicated he would be sidelined six to eight weeks. Wilfork practiced for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury in last Sunday's 26-10 win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Wilfork's presence would go a long way in helping the Patriots' run defense. Mayo's will too, but it doesn't look like he'll be in the lineup this week. The Patriots DST is no better than a low-end No. 1 option against the potent Ravens in Week 4.
News: The Boston Herald reports Patriots DL Vince Wilfork appears fine after suffering an apparent ankle injury in Sunday's game against Atlanta. Teammate Ty Warren said on a local radio show in Boston that Wilfork should be OK. "He's doing pretty good," Warren said. "Vince always has a smile on his face. He's doing pretty good." Coach Bill Belichick would not confirm Wilfork's status Monday. "We'll let you know when that injury report comes out on Wednesday," Belichick said. "I really can't comment on that today."
Analysis: We'll see what happens with Wilfork on Wednesday when the injury report is released. He should be able to play in Week 4 against Baltimore, but he has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues. The Patriots DST could use Wilfork against the Ravens and their strong ground game so see what develops with his status.
News: In the Patriots' Week 3 win over the Falcons, the DST was only good for a forced fumble and a recovery, but they did hold the powerful Atlanta offense to just 10 points and 257 yards of offense.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will have its hands full in Week 4 when the upstart Ravens come to Foxboro. Consider this unit no better than a top-end No. 2 choice as Baltimore's offense has taken the next step so far this season.
News: The New England Patriots have obtained linebacker Prescott Burgess from the Baltimore Ravens for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. Burgess was used primarily by the Ravens on special teams this season. He was picked in the sixth round of the 2007 draft and played in eight games as a rookie before spending last year on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
Analysis: Burgess will give the Patriots some depth at a position they're thin at, but he doesn't improve their standing among DSTs, which isn't high for Week 3 since they host the Falcons and their emerging offense. Burgess isn't expected to post enough stats to warrant Fantasy use in IDP leagues, either.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 16 points and 254 yards to the Jets in a Week 2 loss. They forced one fumble and tallied two sacks.
Analysis: The Patriots were without LB Jerod Mayo for the first time on Sunday and they didn't disgrace themselves. We'd like to have seen another turnover or two, however. In Week 3, the Patriots will host the Falcons. You can probably use New England as an OK No. 1 Fantasy DST for that matchup.
News: New England came back on the Bills on Monday night football. As if the game was a script written for star Tom Brady, New England scored 15 points in the 4th quarter to win 25-24. The Patriots DST allowed far too many points to the Buffalo offense but limited their yardage to just 276. Buffalo was forced into committing one very costly turnover that came very late when Leodis McKelvin fumbled away a kickoff that allowed the Patriots to retain possession deep in Bills' territory for the game's final touchdown. The Patriots sacked QB Trent Edwards four times in the game, including twice on the final drive with time expiring. The Patriots had a bit of bad news in the game as they suffered an injury to Jerod Mayo, who left early with a knee issue.
Analysis: The Patriots' DST is a No. 1 unit and they played well on Monday night, especially late in the game. They will go to New York to face the Jets in Week 2, which defeated the Houston Texans handily in Week 1. Still, the Patriots are far better than the Texans and with New York using a rookie QB in Mark Sanchez, we like the Patriots' DST's chances. Use them as a No. 1 option in Week 2.
News: In a surprising trade, the Patriots moved DE Richard Seymour to Oakland for a first-round pick in 2011. The move bolsters the Raiders' defensive line while the Patriots can begin cultivating younger talent with their big D-linemen.
Analysis: This actually might cut into the sack totals for the Patriots this season even though they've added Derrick Burgess to help their pass rush. This DST remains a No. 1 option, albeit a middle- to low-end one, because of its depth of quality players, even after this move.
News:Tedy Bruschi is retiring after a 13-year career marked by an inspiring return to the New England Patriots as a starting linebacker eight months after a stroke. A person familiar with his decision told The Associated Press that the 36-year-old Bruschi will announce his retirement at a news conference Monday morning. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. The team declined to comment Sunday night. Bruschi played on all three Super Bowl-winning Patriots teams. The last championship game was on Feb. 6, 2005, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Ten days later he was hospitalized after experiencing numbness in his left arm and left leg and blurry vision and was diagnosed with a mild stroke. Bruschi's play declined last season and he missed much of this year's training camp for undisclosed reasons. "I've had so many years (when) where you are in September is different than where you are in December," Bruschi said last week. "So I've learned that ever since I was a third-down situational pass rushing rookie that played on special teams all the way through my entire career, never assume what your role is going to be. Just be ready when your coach calls on you."
Analysis: Bruschi, a 36-year-old inside linebacker, played sparingly in the Patriots' three exhibition games. Last season the Patriots drafted Jerod Mayo at inside linebacker in the first round and he became the NFL defensive player of the year. Gary Guyton, a free agent rookie last season, also developed at that position. This offseason, the Patriots obtained inside linebacker Paris Lennon from Detroit. Bruschi made one Pro Bowl in the 2004 season when he was second on the team with 128 tackles. He also had a sack and an interception in that year's Super Bowl win over the Eagles. He has played in 189 regular-season games, more than any linebacker in club history. His 631 total tackles over the past six seasons are the most on the team in that period. While the Patriots lose a top veteran presence in Bruschi, his absence will not destroy their defensive potential. The Patriots DST is still a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News:Derrick Burgess spent another day away from practice. For a change, no one seemed upset. Not even the linebacker whose chance for a starting job faded when the New England Patriots obtained Burgess, a strong pass rusher and two-time Pro Bowl player, from the Oakland Raiders. "You can't worry," Pierre Woods said Friday. "It's good that the guy's on the team. He's coming in to help and that's all that matters. We're trying to work together. We're trying to win games, and that's it." Coach Bill Belichick had been trying to fill the outside linebacker spot left vacant when he traded Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs in February. Burgess held out of Oakland's training camp in hopes of forcing a trade. On Thursday, about four months after Belichick first talked to Raiders owner Al Davis about a deal for Burgess, the Patriots and the player joined forces. New England gave up undisclosed draft considerations that Belichick said should be determined in a few weeks. Burgess played left defensive end in Oakland's 4-3 alignment but figures to play linebacker in New England's 3-4.
Analysis: Burgess, entering the final year of a five-year contract, is expected to practice for the first time with his new team Sunday. "It's a huge pickup for us," nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. "I can't wait for him to get in here and start playing around with him." Burgess has 47 sacks in seven seasons, three with Philadelphia and four with Oakland. His last game with the Eagles was the 2005 Super Bowl. Burgess is "a player that I coached in the Pro Bowl a couple of years ago, certainly competed against when he was at Philadelphia and also in Oakland," Belichick said. The coach described Burgess as a "very athletic guy, competitive, tough, hardworking guy." Burgess is a bit injury prone but is still a quality pass rusher who the Patriots will find ways to use. This pads the sack total for the Patriots and makes them a good No. 1 Fantasy DST, which is what they were before anyway.
News: The Raiders traded DE Derrick Burgess to the Patriots for draft picks on Thursday, ending a holdout at one camp and addressing a need in another. Burgess might wind up being a hybrid DE/OLB for the Patriots, playing some downs as an end and others as an outside linebacker. The Raiders are comfortable at the position and found Burgess to be expendable.
Analysis: The Patriots DST should have a little more explosiveness to it. Burgess is a bit injury prone but is still a quality pass rusher who the Patriots will find ways to use. This pads the sack total for the Patriots and makes them a good No. 1 Fantasy DST, which is what they were before anyway.
News: The Patriots signed veteran cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden to contracts recently, stabilizing their CB corps. Springs is best known for being a matchup problem for Terrell Owens, who has run hot and cold against Springs for years. Bodden has played his best ball in the Browns' 3-4 defense; he was awful last year with the Lions, who ran a 4-3 scheme. Ellis Hobbs and Terrence Wheatley also are in the fold for the Patriots, who will likely rotate this foursome throughout the season.
Analysis: The Patriots' secondary was a mess last season, but they're on their way to being solid in 2009. The club still is looking for help at linebacker, notably on the outside. But between their defense and special-teams play, this is a No. 1 option for Fantasy owners to consider with a late-round pick in drafts this summer.
News: NFL Network and the Boston Globe both report that the Patriots have traded LB Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs. Sirius NFL Radio reports the Chiefs will give an undisclosed draft pick for him. Vrabel was in Kansas City on Friday taking a physical and confirmed that he had been traded. Vrabel had 62 total tackles, four sacks, an interception, four passes defensed and a forced fumble for New England last year and had 12.5 sacks and two touchdowns as an offensive player in 2007.
Analysis: Vrabel will be a leader in the Kansas City defense and likely signals that this unit will line up in the 3-4 scheme. This hurts the Patriots DST more than helps the Chiefs DST because Vrabel's chances to post good numbers dwindle with him in Kansas City, and the Patriots have a hole to fill in replacing him. The Chiefs remain a No. 3 DST while the Patriots, by virtue of their good defense and solid special teams, are still a middle- to low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: Turnovers were hard to come by in Week 17's 13-0 win over the Bills in Buffalo for the Patriots. With an insane wind, the teams were relegated to mostly running the ball. The Patriots DST forced just one turnover, which came on a Trent Edwards fumble, but did limit the Bills to just 276 yards in the game. New England's Jarvis Green picked up both the team's sacks on the day.
Analysis: New England finishes the season with 14 interceptions and 30 sacks and was one of the better Fantasy DSTs in football. There is no reason that won't continue heading into 2009. They should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Patriots DST had two sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery Sunday against Arizona. Ellis Hobbs had a kickoff return for 15 yards, Sammy Morris had a kickoff return for 13 yards. Wes Welker had five punt returns for 56 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST played well and should do well again in Week 17 against Buffalo. Consider the Patriots a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Patriots DST allowed 334 total yards and giving up 26 points to the lowly Oakland Raiders in Week 15 on the road. JaMarcus Russell gained 218 yards through the air and the tandem of Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden rushed for a combined 116 yards.
Analysis: The Pats certainly didn't play like a high-end Fantasy DST in Week 15 but they got the job done regardless against the Raiders. They played without Tedy Bruschi who is questionable for the rest of the season. New England takes on Arizona in Week 16, a team that can put up big numbers but looked bad Week 15. Consider them a No. 2 option against the Cardinals this week.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi will be placed on season-ending Injured Reserve with a knee injury suffered in Week 14 at Seattle. Bruschi's injury isn't a major one, but with the season down to three weeks, he's expected to be out for at least that long and the Patriots would like to do something else with his roster spot. The Boston Globe reports that Bruschi has been sent back to New England for tests (the club is staying out west this week) to determine the extent of his injury.
Analysis: The Patriots LB corps continues to lose talent down the stretch. We could see the club start rookie Jerod Mayo and newly signed long-time NFL defender Junior Seau starting on the inside with veterans Mike Vrabel and Rosevelt Colvin on the outside. This could lead to some struggles in stopping the run in the coming weeks, beginning with the run-oriented Raiders in Week 15. Figure the Patriots DST to be a low-end No. 1 option thanks in part to the Raiders' inability to throw the ball with consistency.
News: Patriots head coach Bill Belichick isn't shedding any light on the Patriots growing injury situation. He said he had no update on any of the players who missed most of Sunday's 24-21 win at Seattle after being hurt. Linebacker Tedy Bruschi injured his knee, nose tackle Wince Wilfork left with a shoulder injury and safety James Sanders hurt his ribs. New England already has lost two defensive starters for the season: safety Rodney Harrison and linebacker Adalius Thomas. And starting defensive end Ty Warren missed Sunday's game with a thigh injury.
Analysis: Not a surprise that Belichick is mum on the health of his players. The Patriots DST is a decent option in Week 15 at Oakland even with several starters expected to miss the game.
News: New England came from behind to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14, 24-21. The Patriots DST allowed 339 yards of offense to Seattle, which was missing starting QB Matt Hasselbeck but got a spirited performance from Seneca Wallace. The Patriots forced just one turnover and that came on a fumble by Wallace at the very end of the game with Seattle attempting to drive for the winning or game-tying score. The same person who forced the fumble, Brandon Meriweather, also got the team's lone sack.
Analysis: The Pats certainly didn't play like a high-end Fantasy DST in Week 14 but they got the job done regardless against the Seahawks. They lost Tedy Bruschi to an injury early and that could certainly hurt them if he cannot return in Week 15 at Oakland. Still, against the Raiders, who are absolutely pathetic offensively, we suggest you start the Patriots DST.
News: LBs Junior Seau and Rosevelt Colvin have been re-signed by the Patriots, moves they had to make since their LB corps had been depleted by injuries. The team has seen outside linebackers Adalius Thomas and Pierre Woods go down with injuries and be lost for the season, and veteran inside linebacker Tedy Bruschi is no lock to play in Week 14 at Seattle.
Analysis: Seau is likely going to be a backup to Bruschi while Colvin has a chance at starting on the outside and contributing to the pass rush. While this gives them a ton of name-brand talent, the Patriots will still likely give up some decent rushing yardage going forward. However, their schedule is very nice down the stretch and they shouldn't get run over in any game until Week 17 when they play at Buffalo. The DST remains a nice option when they play at Seattle this Sunday afternoon.
News: It wasn't pretty in New England Sunday of Week 13 as the Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the New England Patriots at home, 33-10. The Patriots DST allowed 333 yards of offense to the Steelers as both Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore had nice games on the ground. New England forced just one turnover as Ben Roethlisberger had a pass intercepted by Mike Vrabel. The Patriots also sacked Big Ben just once with Richard Seymour and Ellis Hobbs each having half.
Analysis: The Pats have had the odd decent week here and there this season, but they've mostly disappointed. In Week 14, New England heads to Seattle to play the lowly Seahawks. The Patriots DST might be worth using against an offense that has struggled all season long. They are still not a high-end option, however.
News: The Patriots DST gave up 28 points and 392 yards to the Dolphins in a Week 12 victory, but did record an interception and two sacks.
Analysis: The Pats have had the odd decent week here and there this season, but they've mostly disappointed thanks to injuries. In Week 13, New England hosts Pittsburgh and the Patriots DST should only be used in deeper leagues unless the weather looks questionable.
News: New England fell to the Jets at home on Thursday night of Week 11, 34-31, in overtime. The Patriots DST kept Brett Favre under 300 yards and allowed 375 total yards to the Jets. New England forced just one turnover in the game on a Jerricho Cotchery fumble and sacked Favre three times. Vince Wilfork, Pierre Woods and Richard Seymour each had a sack apiece.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has played well at times this year and is worth using as a low-end No. 1 option in Week 12 at Miami.
News:Adalius Thomas is the latest Patriots starter who might miss time after the linebacker suffered what could be a long-term arm injury. Thomas didn't return after leaving the Patriots 20-10 win over the Buffalo Bills midway through the second quarter Sunday. The Patriots said only that he hurt his arm, but ESPN.com, quoting unnamed sources, reported Thomas broke his left forearm and "likely" will miss the rest of the season. Team spokesman Stacey James said Monday the next injury update would come after Tuesday's practice. A spokesman for Thomas' agent, James "Bus" Cook Jr., said the player had not returned a phone call to Cook. "I think it'll be difficult" to replace Thomas," said Mike Vrabel, the team's other starting outside linebacker. "He was a leader. He was a veteran guy that played well and we'll just have to find guys to step up."
Analysis: Thomas leads the Patriots with five sacks in his second season with the team. He was a rookie on Baltimore's team that won the Super Bowl after the 2000 season and was chosen for Pro Bowls in 2003 and 2006. The Patriots already have lost safety Rodney Harrison for the season with a torn quadriceps in his right thigh. Two key players on offense also are out for the season: quarterback Tom Brady with a knee injury suffered in the opener and running back Laurence Maroney with a shoulder injury. Thomas might not yet be out for the season, but it's very doubtful we will see him on the field Week 11. Fantasy owners might want to start making alternate plans. Thomas was a viable Fantasy LB. His loss also hurts the Patriots DST.
News: Patriots LB Adalius Thomas has a broken forearm, according to the Boston Herald, citing team sources. It is unclear which arm he broke; ESPN says it's his left arm while the Herald's sources say it's his right. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Analysis: This certainly hurts the Patriots defense as Thomas is a good pass rusher and tackler. The club is still good against the run but suspect against the pass. They should still come up with a takeaway or two when they host Brett Favre and the Jets in Week 11. Consider them a low-end No. 1 unit.
News: The Patriots DST had two interceptions and two sacks Sunday against Buffalo in a 20-10 victory. Ellis Hobbs and Deltha O'Neal had the interceptions, and Ty Warren and Richard Seymour had the sacks. Wes Welker had one punt return for 10 yards, and Ellis Hobbs had one kickoff return for 13 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has played well at times this year and is worth using as a low-end No. 1 option in Week 11 against the Jets on Thursday.
News: Patriots NT Vince Wilfork wasn't a full participant with a toe injury Wednesday in practice.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Wilfork's status but expect him to play against the Bills. He has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues, but he's a big part of the Patriots run defense and if he's out it would impact the Patriots DST.
News: The Patriots DST had no sacks, interceptions or fumble recoveries Sunday at Indianapolis in an 18-15 loss to the Colts. Ellis Hobbs had four kickoff returns for 96 yards and Wes Welker had two punt returns for 24 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST is not the same as in years past and has become a No. 2 Fantasy option. They should only be used when the matchups are right, which could be the case in Week 10 against Buffalo if Trent Edwards continues to throw interceptions. He had two in Week 9 against the Jets.
News: Patriots coach Bill Belichick searched for enough healthy defensive backs to finish the Patriots' last game. He may have the same problem Week 9 against Peyton Manning and the Colts. Safety Rodney Harrison is out for the season, and starting cornerback Ellis Hobbs and backup Lewis Sanders were sidelined from practice Wednesday. It may be time for rookies Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite to step up against Manning, still dangerous despite a subpar season for him and Indianapolis. "Even if you're not a starter, you've still got to be ready to go," said Wheatley, a second-round draft pick from Colorado.
Analysis: Hobbs has some low-end IDP value, so keep an eye on his status. None of these other players has much Fantasy value on his own, but with all the problems the Patriots have in their secondary, you have even more reason not to start the Patriots DST against the Colts. Consider it a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: New England defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will be fined but not suspended by the NFL after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell about a hit on Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, a source familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Patriots nose tackle met Tuesday with Goodell and the commissioner decided to forego a possible suspension. That's according to a person familiar with the case who asked for anonymity because there has been no official announcement. The NFL declined comment, noting that fines and suspensions normally are announced on Fridays.
Analysis: Wilfork is a big part of the Patriots defense (literally). Without him, they'd struggle to stop the run. However, with a trip to Indianapolis and a game against Peyton Manning in New England's sights, it's probably a good idea to look in another direction for Week 9 as far as DSTs go.
News: The Patriots DST held the Rams to 16 points and 358 yards in a Week 8 victory. They also made four sacks and intercepted Marc Bulger on the Rams' final drive of the game.
Analysis: New England couldn't repeat their Week 7 heroics again this week, but their performance wasn't a terrible one. In Week 9, New England visits Indianapolis. They should remain an OK No. 1 option with that semi-decent matchup.
News: The Patriots defense had one of its best performances of the season Week 7 against the Broncos. It allowed only seven points on 275 yards, picking up three sacks, two interceptions and three fumbles.
Analysis: Five turnovers and three sacks will usually provide plenty of Fantasy points even if the opposing team scores more than seven points. The Patriots DST remains a shaky unit, though, despite this one performance. Fortunately, it faces the Rams in Week 8, so consider it a nice sleeper start in Fantasy.
News: The Patriots defense gave up 30 points on 404 yards to the hosting Chargers in Week 6. Even worse, it didn't have any big plays, going without a sack or an interception.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has mostly struggled in Fantasy this season, though it looked like it rebounded to an extent Week 5 against the 49ers. Since you can't count on it for any big plays, think of it as a low-end Fantasy option, especially Week 7 against the Broncos.
News:Rodney Harrison didn't get terribly worried when the New England defense was humiliated by the lowly Miami Dolphins in September. And after the Patriots got back to normal in a win over San Francisco Week 5, the veteran safety didn't get terribly excited. With a long history of consistent success and a talent-laden group of players, this perennially stingy bunch doesn't stake its self-worth on any single outing -- at least not until the Super Bowl. "Against the Dolphins, (people said) we were the worst secondary in the league," Harrison said."Now, because we have three interceptions (against the 49ers), everyone wants to say we're the best secondary in the league. That's not the way to look at it. It's just a process that we have to go through every week."
Analysis: The Patriots (3-1) are going through that process on the bumpy practice fields of San Jose State before their biggest test of the young season Sunday night at San Diego (2-3). The coaching staff played old-school rap from the speakers around the Spartans' turf before Harrison and his defensive teammates went to work on the game plan for the Chargers.Even after getting shredded by the Dolphins and their unorthodox use of running back Ronnie Brown, the Patriots still rank among the NFL's better defenses, both statistically and in their opponents' eyes. One bad game couldn't shake the Patriots' confidence, but the way they recovered from that game gives them ample hope for the future. "Everybody on this defense knows what we can do when we're healthy and together," defensive lineman Richard Seymour said. The Patriots DST is a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit for Week 6.
News: While the Patriots DST gave up only 199 yards in a Week 5 win over the 49ers and forced three interceptions, they did allow 21 points to San Francisco. They also recorded one sack.
Analysis: The Patriots forced J.T. O'Sullivan into three picks on Sunday and just held the 49ers below the 200 yard mark, which surely made a huge difference in leagues that reward for fewer yards allowed. In Week 6, the Patriots visit San Diego. While the Chargers looked anemic in Week 5 against the Dolphins, they have an offense capable of putting up points and so the Patriots DST should be used as a low-end No. 1 or bye-week replacement option.
News: The Patriots will return from their bye to play San Francisco in Week 5. The 49ers are averaging 23.5 points and 334.5 yards per game through four weeks.
Analysis: The Patriots DST gave up 38 points and 461 yards to the Dolphins in Week 3 rout and right now look like an aging bunch that isn't very appealing in Fantasy. The Niners have had two big games offensively and two mediocre games. Consider the Pats defense a crap shoot for Week 5 in Fantasy, but they can be useful still due to the bye weeks limiting options.
News: The Patriots DST gave up 38 points and 461 yards to the Dolphins in Week 3 rout. They also failed to record a sack, interception or a fumble recovery.
Analysis: Wow, talk about a shocker. Many people picked up or started the Pats defense in Week 3 simply because they were playing the Dolphins, but Miami showed up in a big way and ruined the party at Gillette Stadium. You know Bill Belichick will be working diligently to find out what went wrong in this game, and he'll have two weeks to do it as the Pats are off in Week 4. They remain a No. 1 Fantasy DST for now, despite this setback.
News: The Patriots defense held future Hall of Famer Brett Favre to 181 passing yards during a 19-10 win Week 2 against the Jets. New England allowed Favre to throw just one touchdown and also picked off one of his passes. The Patriots got two sacks and allowed just 256 total yards.
Analysis: The Patriots struggled mightily during the preseason on defense, but through the first two weeks they have allowed just 20 points. Oh, that Bill Belichick. No matter who is on defense, he always seems to get his boys ready. The Patriots DST is a must-start Fantasy option heading into Week 3 against the Dolphins.
News: The Patriots DST was solid in Week 1 against the Chiefs' suspect offensive line, notching five sacks along with an interception and a forced fumble in their 17-10 win.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will be in for a test in Week 2 at Brett Favre and the Jets. Unless you have the roster room to bench them and pick up a better option available off the waiver wire, you'll have to start them.
News: The Patriots defense and special teams did not have a very good game during Friday's 27-17 preseason loss to the Eagles. Not only did the defense get beat for 390 yards, but the special teams unit allowed a 101-yard kick return by Quintin Demps and a 76-yard punt return by DeSean Jackson. New England did recover a fumble, but had only one sack (Tedy Bruschi) and no interceptions. "I've only been here two games and things haven't been good," said Patriots safety John Lynch, who signed after being released by Denver. "I don't think you put too much stock on results, but we've still got to regroup."
Analysis: The Patriots defense wasn't really missing any key elements on defense Friday, and as Lynch stated, they just haven't been very good. Let's hope they are just saving their energy for the regular season. The Patriots have a good mix of young and old on defense and still pass as a viable No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Patriots defense was missing several key players for Sunday's preseason game at Tampa. OLB Adalius Thomas, ILB Victor Hobson, SS Rodney Harrison and FS James Sanders all sat out as healthy scratches. Pierre Woods replaced Thomas, rookie Jerod Mayo replaced Hobson, Brandon Meriweather replaced Harrison and Spann replaced Sanders.
Analysis: The Patriots defense will be fine for the start of the year. Don't worry about the players missing time. They are expected to be ready for Week 1. Consider the Patriots DST a No. 1 Fantasy option. With the addition of John Lynch via free agency, the Patriots secondary has another proven veteran.
News: The Patriots have signed nine-time Pro Bowl safety John Lynch. Lynch, a 15-year veteran, spent the first 11 years of his career with Tampa Bay and the last four years in Denver. His career totals include 1,277 tackles, 13 sacks and 26 interceptions.
Analysis: The Patriots have been hit by injuries in the secondary, both at safety and cornerback. Safety-linebacker Tank Williams had a season-ending knee injury in their first exhibition game. Lynch will certainly have an impact on the Patriots DST, but that will come more with his experience than his actual play. He should be considered a very low-end Fantasy option in deep IDP leagues.
News: NFL.com reports the New England Patriots have reached an agreement with nine-time Pro Bowl safety John Lynch on a one-year, $1.5 million deal. Patriots coach Bill Belichick met with Lynch on Wednesday, and the former Denver Broncos star took a physical.
News: With the 10th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected Tennessee LB Jerod Mayo, a surprising pick considering where he was projected to go heading into the draft. Mayo is a very athletic, very feisty inside linebacker who should aid in the run defense this season and eventually become a centerpiece in the Patriots defense.
Analysis: Mayo will fill in nicely with what is already one of the better defenses in the NFL. While he may not make a sizable impact as a rookie, the Patriots DST remains one of the best options in Fantasy play thanks to all of the other talent there. Figure them to be a No. 1 option in drafts this summer, worth a late-round pick.
News: The New England Patriots signed free agent DB Fernando Bryant, a former first-round draft pick who has played nine years with Jacksonville and Detroit. "Adding a cornerback with Fernando's experience and production is a good opportunity for us," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. Bryant, 30, started every game for the Lions last year and had 76 tackles - the most since his rookie season - while tying a career-high with a pair of interceptions. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound cornerback from Alabama has seven interceptions, seven fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles in his career. The Patriots lost two of their top free cornerbacks last season to free agency: Asante Samuel to Philadelphia and Randall Gay to New Orleans. Ellis Hobbs is the only one remaining from that group.
Analysis: Bryant should do well with the Patriots. If he's named a starter then consider him a No. 3 option in IDP leagues.
News: The Patriots DST, which accounted for 19 interceptions, 47 sacks, 12 fumble recoveries and eight defensive touchdowns in 2007, has a lot of question marks heading into 2008. There are age concerns regarding Tedy Bruschi, Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison, who are considering retirement. And there is the impending free agency of DB Asante Samuel, who is unlikely to return. On special teams, the Patriots should be fine with Ellis Hobbs on kickoff returns, who averaged 26 yards per return with one touchdown, and Wes Welker on punt returns, who averaged 10 yards per return.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what develops with the Patriots aging linebackers and Samuel. It could determine if the Pats are the No. 1 DST in 2008 or just an average bunch. Expect New England to be aggressive in free agency at linebacker if Seau and Bruschi depart, and the defensive line remains a solid option. Hobbs and Welker make the ST unit one of the best in the NFL.
News: On an afternoon when QB Tom Brady struggled, the Patriots defense stepped up its performance against the Chargers in the AFC Championship game, allowing only 12 points on 311 yards. It recorded one sack and one interception.
Analysis: After a couple less-than-inspiring performance, the Patriots DST looked back on track against some of the stiffest competition it's faced all season. Keep it active in Fantasy playoff leagues. It will enter 2008 as one of the most sought-after DST units in Fantasy and, as it usually does under coach Bill Belichick, will likely deserve the ranking by season's end.
News: The Patriots defense, dominant against so many teams during the regular season, surrendered 20 points on 350 yards Saturday in a Divisional Playoff game against the Jaguars. It recorded a sack and an interception and recovered a fumble. The Patriots special teams, meanwhile, gained 105 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST might have another tough time next week -- especially if it has to play the Colts -- but what defense doesn't in the playoffs? It will enter 2008 as one of the most sought-after DST units in Fantasy and, as it usually does under coach Bill Belichick, will likely deserve the ranking by season's end.
News: The Patriots defense didn't exactly end the 2007 season on a high note even if the rest of the team did. It surrendered a season-worst 35 points to the hosting Giants in Week 17, allowing 316 yards and recording only one sack and one interception. The Patriots special teams, meanwhile, gained 98 yards.
Analysis: Still, the Patriots DST certainly played its part in contributing to a 16-0 season, entering Week 17 as the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL. It will enter 2008 as one of the most sought-after DST units in Fantasy and, as it usually does under coach Bill Belichick, will likely deserve the ranking by season's end.
News: The Patriots DST sacked Cleo Lemon seven times in New England's 28-7 win over the Dolphins in Week 16, but didn't force a turnover.
Analysis: Owners of the Patriots defense were certainly looking forward to a big outing from the unit on Sunday against the hapless Fins, but we're sure no turnovers isn't exactly what they had in mind. Seven sacks and seven points against are nice, but turnovers are where the points can really be made. Despite this bad outing, the Pats remain a must start in Week 17 against the Giants.
News: The Patriots DST totaled five sacks, an interception (returned for a touchdown) and two forced fumbles (one recovered) vs. the Jets in Week 15.
Analysis: The Patriots DST remains a top-shelf option for Fantasy owners, especially against the weak Dolphins offense in Week 16. Start them, of course!
News: The Patriots DST did not get any turnovers Sunday against the Steelers but did have three sacks. Chad Jackson had four kickoff returns for a 17.5-yard average and two punt returns for 7 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will look to have a big game in Week 15 against the Jets. Consider the unit a No. 1 option.
News: The Patriots surrendered 24 points on 376 yards Week 13 at Baltimore, nearly having to fly home with their first loss of the season. Their defense registered zero sacks and collected only two turnovers -- a fumble and an interception -- against an offense that entered the game ranked 24th in the league. The Patriots special teams, meanwhile, picked up 74 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots defense entered the game ranked third in the league, so its matchup against the Ravens looked like a no-brainer. Despite the uninspiring performance, we still recommend you start the Patriots DST in Fantasy for Week 14 against the Steelers.
News: The Patriots DST ranks third in total defense and they'll travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens' 24th-ranked offense in Week 13.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has 31 sacks this season and they have 16 interceptions which ranks them second in the NFL. Don't ever sit this DST, including this week.
News: The visiting Eagles gave the Patriots a fight, and the stats from Week 12 show it. The Patriots allowed 28 points on 391 yards, picking up three interceptions and only one sack. Asante Samuel did return one interception 40 yards for a touchdown, however. On special teams, the Patriots had 112 yards.
Analysis: When you get a defensive touchdown and still have a bad game by your usual standards, you know you're going pretty good. The Patriots DST remains one of the few you can trust on an every-week basis, but it has a particularly good matchup Week 13 at Baltimore.
News: The Patriots held the Bills to 10 points and 229 yards of total offense in Week 11 at Buffalo. They forced two turnovers and had four sacks in the game. DB Ellis Hobbs returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Patriots defense is one of the better sources for DTDs in Fantasy Football and they are one of the elite units, regardless of matchups. They did not allow the Bills to get into any kind of a rhythm on Sunday night in front of their own home crowd. In Week 12, the Pats are a must-start unit when they host the Eagles. QB Donovan McNabb left Week 11 vs. Miami with an injury, making the matchup potentially more appealing.
News: The Patriots DST will travel to Buffalo to face a Bills offense that is ranked 27th overall (28th in the passing game, 17th on the ground) in Week 11 on Sunday.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks fourth in the NFL in total defense (sixth against both the pass and run). They have 25 sacks and 12 interceptions and we recommend them in all Fantasy formats obviously.
News: The Buccaneers, Jets, Patriots and Texans are on a bye week in Week 10.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks first overall in total defense (first against the pass and eighth against the run). Keep them reserved -- do NOT cut them this week. They return in Week 11 at Buffalo.
News: The Patriots defense did a nice job keeping All-Pro quarterback Peyton Manning and the Colts in check Week 9. Manning threw for just 225 yards and one touchdown, while being sacked three times and also throwing one interception. But the most significant error Manning made came with 2:25 left and the Colts in position to possibly make another memorable comeback drive -0 as they did in last season's AFC championship game. Facing third-and-nine from his own 49, Manning was flushed from the pocket and started to tuck the ball when Jarvis Green hit him. The ball popped loose and linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, who was standing right in front of Manning, batted the ball with one hand then snatched it out of the air and sealed the 24-20 victory.
Analysis: Indianapolis managed 329 yards against the Patriots, who forced two fumbles. It was another solid day for the Patriots defense and they showed why they are one of the best units in the league. The Patriots DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy option. New England is not back in action until Week 11 against the Bills.
News: The Patriots DST is ranked third overall in total defense, fifth against both the run and the pass. They will travel to Indianapolis for a huge AFC matchup against Peyton Manning's third-ranked offensive unit.
Analysis: The Patriots have 22 sacks this season, but they have 11 interceptions, which is tied for second in the NFL. Even with such a tough matchup, you have to keep the Pats DST in your starting lineup week in and week out.
News: Patriots LB Mike Vrabel finished Week 8 vs. Washington with 13 total tackles (11 solo), three sacks and three forced fumbles. Vrabel's forced fumbles were recovered by Ty Warren, who had two, and Rosevelt Colvin, who returned it for a touchdown. CB Asante Samuel added an intercepion, and the Patriots held the Redskins to seven points and 244 total yards.
Analysis: The Patriots will play at Indianapolis in Week 9, and they might have trouble with the Colts' offense. If you own them and can't or don't want to pick up an alternative, go ahead and start them. They should pick off Peyton Manning a couple of times.
News: New England will host Washington in Week 8 in what has potential to be a big game. The Redskins offense is ranked 25th overall, including 25th through the air and 16th on the ground. They have allowed just nine sacks, however and five interceptions.
Analysis: The Patriots DST is ranked fourth in total defense. And in the past three weeks, they have five interceptions, eight sacks and two defensive touchdowns. Keep them active for this matchup.
News: The Patriots DST gave up 28 points and 382 yards to the Dolphins in a 49-28 win over Miami in Week 7, but did manage to sack Cleo Lemon three times and force him to throw an interception. They also recovered one fumble and got a kick return touchdown from Willie Andrews.
Analysis: Not a huge week for the Patriots DST, but the Dolphins offense hasn't looked horrible in the last few weeks. They still remain one of the league's elite DSTs, so be sure to start them against the Redskins in Week 8.
News: New England travels to South Florida to face a beleaguered 0-6 Dolphins team on Sunday. The Dolphins rank 21st in the NFL in offense, but they traded one of their few stars in WR Chris Chambers to San Diego on Tuesday. They rank 16th in the passing game and 18th in the rushing game. DT Richard Seymour is expected back this week after spending six weeks on the PUP list with a knee injury.
Analysis: The Patriots DST are once again a must-start defensive unit in all Fantasy formats. They are second in total defense, including fourth against the pass and fifth against the run.
News: The Patriots defense had a seesaw battle Week 6 against the Cowboys, but buckled down when it mattered most and helped New England remain undefeated. The Patriots shut out Dallas in the first quarter, but then the Cowboys scored 17 points in the second, including a fumble return for a touchdown. Dallas would only get one touchdown and field goal in the second half. New England allowed 283 yards, but sacked QB Tony Romo twice and picked off one pass.
Analysis: The Patriots were right around their average yards allowed, but the Cowboys dumped 27 points on a unit that allowed an average of 13 points per game. No worries. The Patriots defense still looked strong and continue to be a No. 1 Fantasy DST. First-year starter Cleo Lemon will likely be under center for the Dolphins in Week 7 when the Patriots come to town. Make sure to have the Patriots DST active in all Fantasy formats.
News: Week 6 will see a huge matchup between the Patriots and Cowboys in Texas. Dallas ranks first in total offense with 429.6 yards per game. They have allowed six sacks and after QB Tony Romo's five interceptions on Monday, he now has eight picks on the season.
Analysis: The Patriots DST ranks second in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 251.4 yards per game. They have 14 sacks and eight interceptions so far this year. You'll want to start this unit at all times -- even against the top-ranked offense in the NFL. If Romo has another first half like he did Monday, he won't recover quite as easily as he did against Buffalo's 31st-ranked defense.
News: The Browns might have put 17 points on the scoreboard and racked up 353 total yards against the Patriots defense in Week 5, but New England also enjoyed some success against the Cleveland offense. They intercepted QB Derek Anderson three times and Randall Gay scored on a 15-yard fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. The Patriots also walked away with three sacks.
Analysis: The Patriots came into Week 5 with the No. 1 overall defense in the league and showed why against the Browns. And they got even more good news when Rodney Harrison made his season debut after sitting out four games because of a suspension. New England has an awesome defense and the Patriots DST should be starting in all Fantasy leagues every week. Even with the Cowboys on the schedule Week 6, you would be hard pressed to bench the Patriots DST.
News: The Patriots DST, featuring CB Asante Samuel, who has an interception in four of his last five games as a starter dating back to 12/17/06, and LB Adalius Thomas, who has 4 1/2 sacks in his last five games vs. Cleveland, will attempt to shut down the Browns in Week 5. They will also have suspended S Rodney Harrison back.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has been a tremendous Fantasy unit and remains a must-start for when QB Derek Anderson and the Cleveland Browns come calling in Week 5.
News: The New England Patriots DST allowed 13 points and 283 total net yards in Week 4 at Cincinnati. They also picked up one sack and two interceptions in the victory, but failed to post a DTD for the second straight week after scores in the first two games.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has been a tremendous Fantasy unit and remains a must-start for when QB Derek Anderson and the Cleveland Browns come calling in Week 5.
News: New England travels to play at Cincinnati in Week 4. The Bengals might have the second best passing offense in the NFL behind Detroit, but their rushing offense will be hurt by the absence Rudi Johnson (hamstring).
Analysis: The Patriots DST remains a must-start unit in all formats. They have 10 sacks (tied for fourth), five forced fumbles (tied for third) and three interceptions. Only the Steelers have allowed fewer points this season than New England.
News: The Patriots allowed just 193 yards of total offense and just seven points in Week 3 vs. Buffalo. DL Jarvis Green had an interception, a fumble recovery and a sack. Ellis Hobbs also had a sack.
Analysis: The one thing they failed to do was score a touchdown for the first time this season. Hobbs was pretty close on his interception return, but was tackled at about the 10-yard line. Hobbs is useful in larger IDP formats and the same can be said for Jarvis Green. The Patriots will face a tough offense on the road in Cincinnati in Week 4, but remain a very solid start in all leagues. Only bench them if you have a quality defense with a good matchup.
News: New England boasts the league's top defensive unit, allowing 214.0 yards per game. The Patriots forced three turnovers versus San Diego, highlighted by Thomas' 65-yard interception return for a touchdown. In Week 3, they will play at home against the Bills, who have scored one touchdown offensively this season.
Analysis: The Patriots have recorded a DTD in each of their first two games. They'll look to keep it going in Week 3 against the Bills. Needless to say, this unit remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues. If you own them, start them.
News: The New England Patriots DST allowed 14 points and just 201 total net yards in Week 2 against the Chargers. LB Adalius Thomas had the biggest defensive highlight, rumbling 65 yards for an interception return for touchdown in the second quarter.
Analysis: The Patriots have recorded a DTD in each of their first two games. They'll look to keep it going in Week 3 against the Bills. Needless to say, this unit remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Patriots DST scored Sunday when New England kick returner Ellis Hobbs had a return for 108 yards against the Jets. The DST also added five sacks but no turnovers.
Analysis: The Patriots DST is a solid option for Week 2 against San Diego. So is the D and ST, especially if Hobbs keeps this up.
News: NFL Network reports that Patriots CB Asante Samuel has been activated and is expected to play a role in the team's Week 1 game at the Jets. The Patriots cut Tory James to make room for Samuel.
Analysis: Samuel will only help an already stout New England defense. Look for them to key in on the run and attack the Jets' O-line and get to Chad Pennington. Start them in all leagues Week 1.
News: Asante Samuel, who tied for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions last season, returned to practice Monday after signing a one-year $7.79 million contract last week. Samuel held out most of camp looking for a long-term deal after the Patriots applied the franchise tag to him in February, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Analysis: Samuel's status for Week 1 vs. the Jets is still uncertain, but consider Samuel a low-end No. 3 DB in IDP leagues and hope he can continue to post high interception totals. His return makes the Pats DST, which is already a No. 1 option, that much better.
News: The NFL will suspend New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison four games for violating its substance abuse policy, Harrison said Friday night. "Tomorrow, the commissioner will announce that I've been suspended," a somber Harrison said in a hastily announced conference call. Although the hard-hitting defensive back said he has never used steroids, "I did admit to the commissioner that I did, in fact, use a banned substance. My purpose was never to gain a competitive edge. Rather, my use was to accelerate the process of reovering from injuries."
Analysis: We will not see Harrison until Week 5 against the Browns. Harrison has not played a full season since 2004, but in his prime, he was a monster on the field and must-start Fantasy option. These days, he is more of a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy DB. The Patriots DST might lose some of their appeal without Harrison, but are still considered a No. 1 Fantasy option. They have plenty of playmakers outside of Harrison to make up for his loss.
News: According to published reports, Patriots DB Rodney Harrison is facing a four-game suspension for obtaining human growth hormones. The announcement might come as early as Saturday. The NFL has yet to comment on the matter.
Analysis: If the suspension goes through, we will not see Harrison until Week 5 against the Browns.
News: New England Patriots DB Asante Samuel ended his holdout Monday, returning to the team after missing the first three preseason games. Samuel was taking a physical Monday, coach Bill Belichick said. It was not immediately clear whether he would practice with the team later in the day, and Belichick declined to comment on whether Samuel would play in the Patriots' preseason finale Thursday against the visiting New York Giants. "It's always good to have all your players available," Belichick said. The Patriots made Samuel their franchise player after he tied Denver's Champ Bailey for the NFL regular-season lead with 10 interceptions last season. But Samuel refused to accept the tender offer of $7.79 million for this season, skipped the team's mandatory minicamp last month and missed most of training camp.
Analysis: Finally, the holdout is over. Consider Samuel a low-end No. 3 DB in IDP leagues and hope he can continue to post high interception totals. His return makes the Pats DST, which is already a No. 1 option, that much better.
News: The Providence Journal reports that CB Asante Samuel is expected to come back to Patriots camp on Monday, ending his holdout. Samuel has been franchised by the Patriots and was unhappy with his contract status. He will sign a one-year tender offer guaranteeing him nearly $8 million before practicing with his teammates.
Analysis: Samuel should only make the Pats deeper and stronger defensively. In their most recent preseason game, they tamed the Panthers running game, holding DeShaun Foster to zero yards and DeAngelo Williams to under 30 yards. The club added LB Adalius Thomas and CB Tory James this offseason and should remain a challenging unit. Consider the Pats DST as a top-five unit, worth drafting between Rounds 9 and 12 in all leagues.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Patriots defensive lineman Ty Warren agreed to a five-year contract extension with $18 million guaranteed. He was going to be a free agent after 2008.
Analysis: Warren's extension means there's less money for CB holdout Asante Samuel. But believe it or not, the Patriots DST will be great with or without Samuel, though obviously they'll be tougher to beat with him. The club added LB Adalius Thomas and CB Tory James this offseason and should remain a challenging unit. Consider the Pats DST as a top-five unit, worth drafting between Rounds 9 and 12 in all leagues.
News: The New England Patriots acquired cornerback Dante Wesley from the Chicago Bears on Tuesday for an undisclosed pick in next year's draft.
Analysis: Wesley signed a two-year contract with the Bears in March 2006 after spending four seasons with Carolina. He finished with 13 special teams tackles and two defensive tackles in 13 games for Chicago, while missing three games with a knee injury. This is a move for depth purposes and does not make the Patriots DST any better. However, they remain a must-start in all leagues heading into 2007.
News: New England Patriots defensive back Chad Scott will miss the upcoming season because of a knee injury, the team announced Monday, as cornerback Asante Samuel's holdout continued.
Analysis: Scott, 32, was placed on the reserve/injured list. The news came just hours after coach Bill Belichick continued to describe Scott's injury as day-to-day. His loss will hurt the Patriots DST a little bit, especially if they can't agree to terms with Samuel. However, they remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues heading into the new season.
News: Patriots CB Asante Samuel is holding out after being offered $7.79 million as a franchise player but not the long-term contract he wanted. He was not in camp when the Patriots began preparing for the 2007 season. However, rookie safety Brandon Meriweather agreed to a five-year deal, according to the Boston Herald. Meriweather will battle for a starting spot.
Analysis: Believe it or not, the Pats DST will be great with or without Samuel, though obviously they'll be tougher to beat with him. The club added LB Adalius Thomas and CB Tory James this offseason and should remain a challenging unit. The Pats DST is considered a top-five unit and is worth drafting between Rounds 9 and 12 in all leagues.
News: The Boston Globe reports that the Patriots have placed DE Richard Seymour on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start training camp. Seymour is recovering from a knee injury. He can come off the PUP list at any time during camp but would miss at least six weeks if he was still on the list on Sept. 1. Other Pats defenders on the PUP list are DB Mel Mitchell (arm) and CB Eddie Jackson (knee).
Analysis: Seymour should be OK and will suit up soon enough. This is a guy who was on the injury report on a weekly basis last year but played in every game. The Pats DST is considered a top-five unit and is worth drafting between Rounds 9 and 12 in all leagues.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Patriots restricted free-agent CB Asante Samuel is planning on holding out through the first 10 games of the regular season unless the club can offer him a new deal. He missed the team's recent minicamp. "He's not coming to camp until a contract resolution can be reached," agent Alonzo Shavers said. "Nothing more can be said. His status has not changed. There has been no movement toward a deal."
Analysis: Samuel is a solid NFL cornerback whom the Patriots need to hang on to if they're going to be considered a stellar defense in 2007. They remain an attractive DST unit next season, but that stature will lose a little luster if Samuel holds out or leaves the team.
News: The Patriots on Wednesday re-signed free agent linebacker Eric Alexander and restricted free agent cornerback Randall Gay. Alexander, 25, played in 14 regular-season games and all three playoff games last season, including his first career start in the AFC championship game loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots signed the 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker as a rookie free agent in 2004. Gay, 24, spent most of the 2006 season on injured reserve. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He has 11 career starts with 50 tackles and two interceptions.
Analysis: The team has had a busy offseason, most recently losing DE Marquise Hill after he passed away in a jet skiing accident. Cornerback Tory James and LB Adalius Thomas have been staunch additions to the defense this offseason, which ranks as a top-five DST in standard Fantasy play in 2007.
News: According to multiple sources, veteran CB Tory James has signed a one-year deal with the Patriots, boosting their cornerback depth and providing as an insurance policy in case franchised CB Asante Samuel sits out the 2007 season.
Analysis: The Patriots defense has received a boost this offseason in the form of DE/LB Adalius Thomas, which only helps the value of their DST. Consider them a starting unit in 2007 play.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots CB Asante Samuel, who was franchised by the team this offseason, will not report to the team's first offseason minicamp, according to his agent. Samuel appears to be confident that a long-term deal will get done, but with CB Nate Clements getting $80 million over eight years from the 49ers, Samuel wants to see a deal close to that, not the one-year tender the Patriots have guaranteed him. "I'm not going to talk too much about (the negotiations)," Samuel said. "But they're happy, I'm happy, so everybody else should be happy too."
Analysis: Samuel is a solid NFL cornerback whom the Patriots need to hang on to if they're going to be considered a stellar defense in 2007. They remain an attractive DST unit next season, but that stature will lose a little luster if Samuel holds out or leaves the team.
News: Linebacker Adalius Thomas signed with New England on Saturday, giving the Patriots one of this season's top free agents and a versatile pass-rushing outside linebacker who can do for the team what Willie McGinest once did. Thomas led Baltimore with 11 sacks last year and played in the Pro Bowl, where the Patriots' Bill Belichick was his coach for the AFC. He also can play defensive end, much like McGinest, one of the mainstays of New England's three Super Bowl winners. "I'm a football player. I don't play a position. Whatever is needed for me to do here, I'm going to do," Thomas said. "That's why (the Patriots) have been so successful here because they don't look at it as position. They look at it as football."
Analysis: The Pats still need to address a few key voids, but this is a big step in the right direction. They remain a middle- to low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST, but one that should come up with eight or more sacks in 2007 thanks to Thomas.
News: The New England Patriots designated Asante Samuel as their franchise player. Without the tag, the Patriots would not be compensated if he signed with another team. "Asante Samuel is an outstanding player who has been a consistent contributor for us for several years," coach Bill Belichick said in a statement the team issued Friday night. "We hope Asante remains a Patriot for many seasons to come."
Analysis: The 26-year-old has played in 59 regular-season and 11 playoff games with New England since being drafted in 2003, and would have been an unrestricted free agent if the Patriots hadn't designated him as their franchise player. Samuel previously said he would like to stay in New England under the "right conditions." The Pats defense should be considered a low-end starting option in '07 league play.
News: The New England Patriots downgraded safety Rodney Harrison from doubtful to out Saturday for the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. Harrison will miss Sunday's game at Indianapolis after straining his right knee in the Patriots' last regular-season game, a 40-23 win over Tennessee, when he was blocked by wide receiver Bobby Wade. The injury sidelined Harrison in the playoffs, including wins over the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers.
Analysis: The Patriots defense has done an admirable job in the postseason without Harrison, but they should have their hands full Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Colts. Take that and Harrison's injury into account before choosing the Patriots D in Fantasy postseason leagues.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots SS Rodney Harrison, who reportedly had a partial tear in his right ACL according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, could be back on the field in the AFC Championships, according to his agent. "I'm not a doctor," said agent Steve Feldman. "But I do know that the report is untrue. There's no tear. He's rehabbing daily to get back." Feldman confirmed that Harrison had a sprain, not a tear.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will struggle against the Chargers and L.T. after doing a stellar job against the Jets, especially without Harrison. But New England is capable of forcing turnovers, so they could provide a few points in Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Patriots are expected to be without SS Rodney Harrison for the rest of the playoffs -- and beyond. The paper cites a source saying that Harrison has a torn ACL in his right knee and will not return during the postseason.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will struggle against the Chargers and L.T. after doing a stellar job against the Jets, especially without Harrison. But New England is capable of forcing turnovers, so they could provide a few points in Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: Patriots safety Rodney Harrison will miss his second straight playoff game Sunday with a knee injury. Harrison, hurt in the last regular-season game, was the only Patriots player listed as out for the divisional playoff against the Chargers. DB Ellis Hobbs (wrist), LB Mike Vrabel (back) and DL Richard Seymour (elbow) are all listed as probable.
Analysis: The Patriots DST will struggle against the Chargers and L.T. after doing a stellar job against the Jets, especially without Harrison. But New England is capable of forcing turnovers, so they could provide a few points in Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: Patriots DL Vince Wilfork lumbered 31 yards on a fumble return that helped New England put the New York Jets away in the first round of the playoffs. In Round 2, though, Wilfork will be back to work clogging up the middle of the field as the Patriots try to stop the San Diego Chargers and NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson led the league with 1,815 yards rushing and shattered an NFL record with 31 touchdowns. For the Patriots to have a chance at a fourth Super Bowl in six years, they'll have to stop him; that's where Wilfork and the rest of the New England defensive line come in. "The best team in the NFL, hands-down. It's going to be a tough challenge," Wilfork said Sunday. "Right now we just have to enjoy this game for a couple more hours and then get started on San Diego."
Analysis: The Patriots DST will struggle against the Chargers and L.T. after doing a stellar job against the Jets. But New England is capable of forcing turnovers, so they could provide a few points in Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: The Patriots defense held the Jets to 16 points, totaling three sacks, a forced fumble and an Asante Samuel interception-return for a touchdown to seal the win vs. the Jets.
Analysis: The Patriots defense is not a recommended start at San Diego in the Divisional Playoffs since they'll be forced to contend with LaDainian Tomlinson.
News: Patriots safety Rodney Harrison will miss Sunday's playoff game against the New York Jets. Coach Bill Belichick made the announcement Wednesday but didn't say whether Harrison would be available for future games if New England moves ahead in the playoffs. Harrison's right knee was injured last Sunday when he was blocked by wide receiver Bobby Wade in a 40-23 win at Tennessee. The Boston Herald had previously reported that Harrison suffered a sprained MCL. Harrison was injured in his second game back after he sat out six games with a broken right shoulder blade. He also missed 13 games last season after hurting his left knee.
Analysis: The Patriots defense is a completely different unit without Harrison than with him. Don't expect them to be as strong against the run or the pass in the playoffs.
News: The Patriots defense totaled five sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles at Tennessee in Week 17, but yielded 23 points (six on a punt return).
Analysis: The Pats defense should continue to be a low-end starting option in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: New England safety Rodney Harrison hurt his right leg when blocked in the second quarter Sunday against the Titans. Harrison went to the ground and slapped the turf after being blocked by Titans receiver Bobby Wade, whose helmet appeared to hit Harrison's right knee. He walked off the field on his own.
Analysis: The Patriots defense was one of the better units to use in 2006 despite the lack of big-name talent, especially in the secondary. Expect them to be a late-round pick in 2007 drafts.
News: The Patriots defense had one sack while holding the Jaguars to 21 points in Week 16. They also recovered a fumble in the game.
Analysis: The Patriots defense is a low-end option at best at Tennessee in Week 17.
News: Notable inactives for the Patriots-Jaguars game in Week 16 include: Patriots QB Vinny Testaverde (No. 3 QB), CB Antwain Spann, DB Rashad Baker, DT Vince Wilfork, TE Ben Watson and DE Marquise Hill. RBs Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk and SS Rodney Harrison are active. For the Jaguars, WR Charles Sharon, RB Montell Owens, CB Ahmad Carroll, RB Fred Taylor, DE James Wyche, LB Jeremy Mincey and DT Tony McDaniel are inactive. Maurice Jones-Drew will start for Taylor.
Analysis: Keep the inactive players reserved for Fantasy purposes in Week 16.
News: The Patriots held the Texans to just 198 yards and seven points in a Week 15 win. The Patriots forced QB David Carr to throw four interceptions (Asante Samuel, Ellis Hobbs, Richard Seymour, James Sanders) and sacked him four times (Tully Banta-Cain 2, Mike Wright and Roosevelt Colvin). Even the special teamers got involved as Hobbs returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Patriots dominated the Texans in Week 15 and Fantasy owners were rewarded. Consider the Patriots DST a solid option in Week 16 at Jacksonville. Seymour and Colvin are the only players that should be used in IDP leagues at this time.
News: The New England Patriots made three practice squad moves on Tuesday, signing defensive back Justin Phinisee and safety Guss Scott and releasing cornerback James Patrick.
Analysis: Neither of the players make any difference in the Fantasy appeal of the Patriots DST.
News: The Patriots DST had one sack against Miami with no interceptions or fumble recoveries. DL Ty Warren had six tackles and a sack. DB Artrell Hawkins had five tackles. DB Asante Samuel had four tackles. DB Chad Scott had five tackles. LB Tedy Bruschi had nine tackles. LB Mike Vrabel had five tackles. And DL Richard Seymour had two tackles.
Analysis: Look for the Patriots DST to bounce back in Week 15 against the Texans and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The New England Patriots signed defensive back Ray Mickens and placed safety Eugene Wilson (groin, hamstring) on injured reserve Monday.
Analysis: The Patriots have been playing well without Wilson of late, so the loss of him for the season shouldn't alter the value of the Pats D. Consider them a starting unit at Miami in Week 14 as they're practically guaranteed to get some interceptions from QB Joey Harrington.
News: The Patriots allowed 21 points and 361 yards of total offense in Week 13 vs. Detroit. They forced five turnovers and sacked QB Alex Smith five times.
Analysis: The turnovers and sacks made for a big game despite the 300-plus yards given up. The Pats aren't the must-start unit they were a couple of seasons ago, but they still make for a nice start in leagues of 10-plus teams. They'll travel to Miami in Week 14.
News: The New England Patriots placed LB Junior Seau on injured reserve Monday after he seriously injured his right arm in Sunday's 17-13 with over the Chicago Bears. The 12-time Pro Bowl selection will miss the rest of the season after coming out of a brief retirement to join the Patriots this summer. Seau was hurt with less than nine minutes left in the second quarter, apparently when his right arm hit the back of Cedric Benson's foot when he tackled the Chicago running back for no gain at the Bears 25-yard line. Seau's arm bent at an awkward angle, and he went to the ground in obvious pain. The 17-year veteran walked off after a few minutes, waving to cheering fans with his left hand while a trainer held his right arm still. Coach Bill Belichick did not say Monday whether Seau's arm was broken, and the team gave no details of the injury.
Analysis: Reserve Seau immediately in all IDP leagues. Even without Seau, consider the Patriots DST a solid option for Week 13 against Detroit.
News: The Patriots defense held Chicago to 13 points in Week 12, registering one sack and three interceptions (all by Asante Samuel). They did lose LB Junior Seau, who appeared to break his right arm during the game.
Analysis: Definitely start the Patriots vs. Detroit in Week 13. That's a matchup from Fantasy heaven.
News: Patriots LB Junior Seau hurt his right arm and left the field in an air cast in the second quarter vs. Chicago in Week 12.
Analysis: This shouldn't impact the Patriots on the field, so keep using their DST unit.
News: Notable defensive players the Patriots listed on their injury report include: SS Rodney Harrison (shoulder) as out; CB Ellis Hobbs (wrist), LB Corey Mays (hamstring), CB Asante Samuel (knee), DB Chad Scott (groin) and safety Eugene Wilson (hamstring) as questionable; DE Richard Seymour (elbow) as probable. Only Seymour practiced Wednesday.
Analysis: Despite the injuries, the Patriots defense should find a way to challenge the Bears in Week 12. Consider them a low-end Fantasy starting option.
News: The Patriots DST had a shutout against Green Bay with four sacks and two fumble recoveries. LB Tedy Bruschi had eight tackles and a half-sack. LB Mike Vrabel had six tackles and 1.5 sacks. DL Richard Seymour had four tackles. DL Ty Warren had three tackles and 1.5 sacks. And LB Tully Banta-Cain had one tackle and a half-sack. LB Junior Seau had one tackle. And DL Jarvis Green had one tackle.
Analysis: The Patriots have a difficult matchup in Week 12 against Chicago, so consider the DST a No. 2 option. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The New England defense allowed 17 points in a loss to the Jets in Week 10, adding just one sack and one interception.
Analysis: The Patriots defense could be in trouble when they play at Green Bay in Week 11 as the Packers have been putting up some decent points in most of their recent games. Consider New England a low-end option for Week 11 Fantasy play.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots SS Rodney Harrison suffered a broken shoulder blade vs. Indianapolis in Week 9. Many sources are reporting that he will miss at least a few weeks, but Pats coach Bill Belichick said Wednesday that Harrison is only ruled out for Week 10 at this point. The injury is not serious enough to require surgery.
Analysis: Consider Harrison out for Week 10 for now, though there is a chance he will miss the rest of the season. If you remember 2005, the Patriots defense was not as strong with him out of the lineup, so consider this injury a huge blow to the Pats defense as well.
News: New England DB Rodney Harrison injured his arm on the team's third defensive play of the game and didn't return, forcing the Patriots to play most of the game without one of their captains and inspirational leaders. Chad Scott moved from cornerback to safety to take Harrison's place alongside Artrell Hawkins. Ellis Hobbs came off the bench to play cornerback. Scott recorded his second interception in as many games, picking off Manning in the fourth quarter. Scott now has 21 interceptions in his 10-year NFL career.
Analysis: This is bad news for the Patriots DST and Harrison owners in IDP leagues. Continue to monitor the situation and hope Harrison can return.
News: The New England defense allowed 27 points and 354 total net yards in Week 9 against the Colts. They had three sacks and an interception in the loss.
Analysis: Despite the fact they were tuned up by QB Peyton Manning and the Colts, the Patriots DST remains a solid play in most Fantasy leagues. They should get back on track in Week 10 against the rival Jets.
News: New England's defense allowed 280 yards of total offense in a Week 8 win in Minnesota. The unit registered four sacks and four interceptions. The special teams unit allowed a 71-yard punt return for a TD, but all in all, both the defense and special teams were spectacular.
Analysis: The Patriots face a daunting task in Week 9 when they host the high-flying Colts. It's advised to look elsewhere for a Fantasy defensive unit for next week.
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots DE Richard Seymour (elbow) did travel with the team but remains questionable for Week 8 at Minnesota. Teammate FS Eugene Wilson (hamstring) did not make the trip.
Analysis: Seymour's presence only makes the New England defense stronger. Use them in all Fantasy leagues at Minnesota in Week 8 since they are expected to compete in a low-scoring game against a weak-armed QB.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Pats DL Richard Seymour was present at practice with his left elbow wrapped. The practice was not a full-pads workout.
Analysis: Seymour only makes the New England defense stronger. Use them in all Fantasy leagues at Minnesota in Week 8.
News: The Patriots DST gave up only six points against Buffalo. The Patriots had two fumble recoveries and one interception. LB Junior Seau had nine tackles, LB Tedy Bruschi had seven tackles and a fumble recovery, CB Asante Samuel had an interception, DL Vince Wilfork had four tackles and a fumble recovery and LB Mike Vrabel had seven tackles and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The Patriots should be considered a low-end No. 1 DST option for Week 8 against Minnesota. Consider using all these players in IDP leagues as well.
News: The Patriots DST had two interceptions and recovered a fumble against the Dolphins. DB Asante Samuel had two interceptions and six tackles. LB Tedy Bruschi had 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has a favorable matchup in Week 7 against Buffalo. Start them and Samuel and Bruschi.
News: ESPN reports that Miami QB Daunte Culpepper (shoulder) will be listed as the No. 3/emergency QB for Week 5 at New England. That means Joey Harrington will start for the Dolphins at quarterback.
Analysis: If you have the Patriots DST, or can get them in your lineup, go for it! Not only should they smack around Harrington, but they should also clamp down on Ronnie Brown as well. Expect a great game from the New England defense.
News: Look for the Patriots to continue using a four-man line this week. New England used a lot of 4-3 defense against both the Jets and Bengals and it paid off with eight combined sacks in those games. With their depth along the defensive line, using the 4-3 allows the Patriots to get their best players on the field more often. DL Jarvis Green had a big game last week, recording three of the Patriots' four sacks. The Patriots defensive front has a huge advantage over an injury-riddled Dolphins offensive line that's given up an eye-popping 21 sacks in their first four games. New England shouldn't have to blitz much against Miami because they will be able to generate pressure on Daunte Culpepper without sending extra rushers.
Analysis: The Patriots had a great showing in Week 4 against Cincinnati and that was without two key defensive backs, Ellis Hobbs and Eguene Wilson. Patriots coach Bill Belichick continues to get the most out of his players, no matter who is on the field. Looking ahead to Week 5, the Dolphins come to town and the Patriots defense are looking at a favorable matchup. Consider using the Patriots DST in Week 5.
News: Patriots DB Ellis Hobbs has a broken wrist and wants to play against the Dolphins this week. Hobbs, who missed Week 4's victory over the Bengals, broke the scaphoid bone in his wrist in the loss to the Broncos Sept. 24. Hobbs played throughout the game. It is unclear whether Hobbs has had, or will even need, surgery. With Hobbs out of the lineup this past Sunday, the Patriots turned to 10-year veteran Chad Scott.
Analysis: Keep Hobbs reserved in all IDP leagues. The Patriots DST is still a good play against the Dolphins because of QB Daunte Culpepper's struggles.
News: The Patriots did something in Week 4 that three other teams before couldn't do in 2006, keep the Bengals offense in check. The Patriots only yielded 13 points and 279 yards in a rout of the Bengals. They sacked QB Carson Palmer four times and forced two key fourth quarter fumbles.
Analysis: It is hard to believe but without two key defensive backs (Ellis Hobbs and Eguene Wilson) the Patriots played some of their best defense all year against a solid Bengals offense. Looking ahead to Week 5, the Dolphins come to town and the Patriots should have a much easier time. Consider using the Patriots DST in Week 5.
News: Numerous published reports say that Patriots CB Ellis Hobbs and FS Eugene Wilson will not play in Week 4 at Cincinnati. Antwain Spann has been promoted to the active roster from the practice squad to add depth to the defensive secondary.
Analysis: The Patriots DST should be avoided in all Fantasy leagues in Week 4 at Carson Palmer and the Cincinnati Bengals.
News: The Patriots defense allowed 400 yards of total offense in a loss to the Broncos on Sunday night, including two long scoring strikes by Jake Plummer. They were unable to force a turnover and have allowed 17 points against in each of their first three contests.
Analysis: New England travels to Cincinnati in Week 4. It's hard to recommend any unit that has to go up against the Bengals lethal attack. Consider alternatives for at least this week.
News: The Patriots played mostly a four-man line against the Jets last week but don't expect them to use the same strategy this week. The 3-4 defense is not only a better front for defending the run -- which the Broncos do very well -- it also allows the outside linebackers to get to the edge and control Jake Plummer. Plummer really hurt the Patriots last year with rollouts and bootlegs. He was able to do this because the Broncos had success running the football. Even though the Patriots will switch defenses in this game, look for them to primarily use a three-man line against Denver so their inside linebackers can clog the running lanes, while the edge rushers keep Plummer from getting outside the pocket. The Patriots have started to use a nice rotation with their linebackers. Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau have been playing inside, while Vrabel, Rosevelt Colvin and Tully Banta-Cain have been patrolling the outside. With Bruschi still recovering from his broken wrist, the addition of Seau has really allowed New England to do more things on defense without missing a beat. The Broncos had some trouble with 3-4 defenses last year. Despite having success against an injured Patriots squad early in the year, Denver's offense struggled against the Chargers, Steelers and Cowboys -- all teams that employ a 3-4 defense similar to the one New England runs. The Patriots enjoyed a great deal of success against the Jets using the 4-3, especially in the first half when they limited New York to just 129 total yards. However, expect a return to the 3-4 this week as the Patriots try to control the Broncos rushing attack inside and make Plummer throw from the pocket by sending two outside linebackers off the edge.
Analysis: The Broncos offense has struggled this year, which makes the Patriots DST a good option this week. Plummer is prone to making mistakes, and the Patriots have a knack for forcing turnovers.

Jets rough up Pats D
News: When the dust settled in Week 2, the Patriots walked away victorious but not before yielding 17 points and 337 yards. They did sack Jets QB Chad Pennington four times and get a pick on the last play of the game. DE Ty Warren led the team with 11 total tackles, Tedy Bruschi chipped in with six tackles and a pick, DLs Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour and Mike Vrabel all had one sack, while DB Eugene Wilson added seven tackles.
Analysis: The Patriots contained the Jets offense for most of the game, but late in the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter the Jets pieced together some nice drives. The Pats are still a good defensive play, but look at the matchup before starting them. In Week 3 they get the Broncos, a team that has an explosive offense, but have struggled thus far.

Pats to stuff the run
News: The Patriots defense has held the Jets to less than 50 rushing yards in each of the last three meetings between the two teams.
Analysis: The Patriots DST could be a good sleeper option this week against the Jets.

Pats DST gets safety
News: Patriots DL Ty Warren got a safety with a sack on QB J.P. Losman against the Bills. DL Richard Seymour and LB Rosevelt Colvin each also had a sack. LB Junior Seau had five tackles and S Rodney Harrison and LB Mike Vrabel each had four tackles. LB Tedy Bruschi (wrist) was inactive.
Analysis: The Patriot DST are a good start this week against the Jets.

Gabriel, Bruschi out for Pats
News: WR Doug Gabriel was inactive for Week 1 against the Bills. Other notables are WR Chad Jackson and LB Tedy Bruschi
Analysis: All players should be rested in Fantasy leagues. QB Tom Brady will still be fine without Gabriel or Jackson, and the Patriots defense should still dominate the Bills.

Pats D ready to go
News: Defensive linemen Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren are ready for the challenge to help the Patriots defense. “I think we’re a talented group, Big Vince, myself and Ty,” Seymour told the Boston Herald. “The first game we have to start developing a dominating mindset and work on sustaining that throughout the season.” The three former first-round picks know their responsibility in the Patriots’ gap-control defense, which requires patience as much as aggressiveness. It’s patience that is often rewarded. “Anytime up front, if you can stop the run and rush the passer, it makes everyone else’s job much easier,” Seymour said. “There’s a trickle-down effect. Pressure on the quarterback forces more difficult throws and that gives the defensive backs an opportunity to make plays. It all goes hand in hand - if they do their job, it makes our job easier, too.”
Analysis: The Patriots DST is an excellent start this week at home against the weak Bills offense.

NE's defense feeling confident
News: The Boston Herald reports that following their 41-0 knockout of the Redskins in their third preseason game, the New England defense feels healthy and confident about playing well in 2006. Everyone except LB Tedy Bruschi (wrist) is healthy, including safety Rodney Harrison, and the team is getting excited about the prospects ahead of them. "I think what we've done in the preseason is give ourselves something to look at and something to work with," LB Rosevelt Colvin said. "Hopefully we can take that, get through this last preseason game healthy and go to the regular season rolling. ... You would hope that the trend continues to go upward."
Analysis: New England's pass defense is still a concern for Fantasy owners, but otherwise they are a staunch unit worth considering as either a platooning starting DST or a strong backup for Fantasy purposes. They might pitch some low-scoring efforts playing the Bills and Jets twice in 2006, so consider them at least for those weeks and in others when they have a favorable matchup.

Patriots sign "retired" LB
News: Junior Seau's brief retirement ended Friday when the 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker agreed to a contract with the New England Patriots. The team didn't disclose terms of the deal with Seau, whose signing followed four days of on-again, off-again signals about whether the 37-year-old would return to the NFL.
Analysis: The Patriots are desperate for depth at linebacker, and Seau would like to win a Super Bowl ring before his career is over. A lot of Fantasy Football fans tend to overvalue this DST compared to some of the more reliable units in the NFL. Consider them a very good bye-week replacement unit to start the season.

Pats courting Junior Seau
News: Just days after retiring as a Charger, LB Junior Seau is considering joining the Patriots. The San Diego Union-Tribune was the first to report that Seau was going to New England for a physical and a tryout. From there, the team will decide if they want Seau and Seau will decide if he wants to play.
Analysis: Seau would certainly provide quality depth for the Patriots at linebacker, but he wouldn't be relied upon to be an every-down player. Remember, the Pats are without Tedy Bruschi (broken wrist), so Seau could be a good enough replacement. And you know how the Pats love using veteran free agents. A lot of Fantasy Football fans tend to overvalue this DST compared to some of the more reliable units in the NFL. Consider them a very good bye-week replacement unit to start the season.

Pats D without Bruschi in preseason
News: Tedy Bruschi underwent surgery Wednesday for a broken wrist and will miss the entire exhibition season. He was also out last summer, while he recovered from a stroke. "His presence, his leadership, his vocal (presence), his mental understanding of the game is huge for us," safety Rodney Harrison said. "Right now, Tedy has an issue and, fortunately for us, we have time right now. We have other guys. We get a chance to look at other young guys." Bruschi, entering his 11th season with the Patriots, was hurt on July 31, the fourth day of camp, and hasn't practiced since.
Analysis: If Bruschi's absense were to extend into the beginning of the regular season, there would be cause for concern. However, there have been no indications from the Patriots (surprise, surprise) that he will not be ready for the Sept. 10 opener vs. Buffalo. A lot of Fantasy Football fans tend to overvalue this DST compared to some of the more reliable units in the NFL. Consider them a very good bye-week replacement unit to start the season.
News: "Tedy has a broken wrist," head coach Bill Belichick told reporters Tuesday. "He will not play in any of the preseason games." What had long been speculated is now official. There is no word on the severity of the injury, so it's unclear if Bruschi will be ready for New England's season opener vs. Buffalo.

Pats' DST gets healthy quick
News: The Patriots activated five players from the physically-unable-to-perform list Monday, including safety Rodney Harrison, defensive lineman Richard Seymour, defensive back Randall Gay and defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan. Harrison missed most of last season after tearing three ligaments in his left knee in New England's Sept. 25 game at Pittsburgh. Seymour, who has played in four consecutive Pro Bowls, missed the first 10 days of camp with a tight quadriceps. Gay (ankle) missed the last seven games of the 2005 regular season. Sullivan was acquired by the Patriots from the Saints this summer.
Analysis: This turn of events is really good news for the Patriots, who now will be able to practice at near full strength (LB Tedy Bruschi is still out with a mysterious wrist injury). A lot of Fantasy Football fans tend to overvalue this DST compared to some of the more reliable units in the NFL. Consider them a very good bye-week replacement unit to start the season.

LB Bruschi misses practice
News: New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi missed his fourth consecutive practice Wednesday because of what coach Bill Belichick termed a "probably" sore wrist. Bruschi is listed as day-to-day. The extent of the injury is unclear, but the Boston Herald reported that the wrist might be fractured and Bruschi would be sidelined at least a week while the team determined the severity of the injury.
Analysis: New England's DST takes a hit if they lose Bruschi for any extended period of time during the season, but it's no biggie if he misses the preseason. Still, a lot of Fantasy Football fans tend to overvalue this DST compared to some of the more reliable units in the NFL. Consider them a very good bye-week replacement unit to start the season.

Wrist could sideline LB Bruschi
News: The Boston Herald reports that Pats LB Tedy Bruschi may have broken his wrist in a practice on Monday, according to a team source. Bruschi could miss a week while the team figures out what's wrong and what the next step is for him if he needs to heal. Bruschi had been hitting hard in camp; losing him would not only take a team leader off the field but force the Pats to manage their already-thin inside linebacker pool even more.

New Pats DT Sullivan arrested
News: Patriots DL Johnathan Sullivan faces several charges, including possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, after his car was pulled over Sunday in Georgia, police said. He was stopped after he ran two stop signs, a police report said. When he approached the vehicle, the officer noted that Sullivan and his passenger weren't wearing their seat belts, the report said. The officer also noticed a small bag containing "a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana." When the officer asked if there were any weapons in the car, Sullivan gave him a handgun. The two men were asked to exit the vehicle so the officer could search it. The report said Sullivan was charged with a seat belt violation, running the stop signs, playing loud music and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
Analysis: Sullivan was a 2003 first-round draft pick for the New Orleans Saints from Georgia, and was traded to the Patriots earlier this month. This surely won't help him stay in Bill Belichick's good graces. He's not expected to be a key contributor to New England's defense and doesn't impact the Pats' standing as second-tier DST.

Pats, Seymour agree to extension
News: The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with Richard Seymour on a contract extension. The team did not release the financial terms or length of the deal.

Patriots cut Willie McGinest
News: The Boston Globe reports the New England Patriots have released Willie McGinest.

Pats reach agreement with Hawkins

Pats to cut McGinest?
News: The Boston Herald reports the Patriots could save nearly $7 million on the salary cap if they cut veteran LB Willie McGinest.
Analysis: Sources believe McGinest would re-sign with the team like Troy Brown did last year after being cut. For now, expect McGinest to be in a Pats uniform in 2006 unless more rumbling leads to McGinest going elsewhere.

Just 18 takeaways for Pats DST
News: The Patriots DST had just 18 total takeaways in 2005 (10 interceptions, eight fumbles). Injuries depleted their secondary and made their defensive unit much more penetrable.
Analysis: Ranking towards the bottom of all Fantasy DSTs, the Pats truly disappointed in '05. The good news is that they will be back at full health in 2006 and should be restocked at certain positions. Drafting them as a top-12 unit is probably a likely scenario.

Pats D in trouble?
News: The Patriots DST looked awesome vs. Jacksonville in the Wild Card round, holding the Jags to three points. However, the Pats are heading to Denver for the Divisional Playoffs, and they've been there before. In Week 6, Denver beat New England 28-20, rushing for over 170 yards and passing for over 260. The New England defense recorded one sack and one forced fumble in the loss.
Analysis: The Patriots DST is not a recommended unit as the Broncos should put up at least 21 points.
1/3/2006

Pats D will have hands full
News: Jacksonville ended 2005 ranked 15th in total offense. They averaged 122.4 rushing yards per game and scored 18 rushing TDs, but were much worse yardagewise with the pass (199.4 yards per game), but did throw 21 touchdowns. Fred Taylor's playing time has been limited to keep him fresh for this game, and Byron Leftwich is expected to start after missing several weeks with a broken ankle.
Analysis: Leftwich is a dangerous problem for the Pats defense, which is ranked 30th vs. the pass and will be tested via the air often in the game. Expect a moderate-scoring game between the two teams.

Pats D gives up 378 yards
News: The Patriots allowed 378 yards and a 28 points in Week 17 vs. Miami. They picked up two sacks in a 28-26 loss.
Analysis: The Pats DST took a step back from their back-to-back Super Bowl years this season, but it was mostly due to injuries. They have to get healthy and fill a few holes in the offseason, but they can be good again in 2006.

Bruschi hampered by leg injury
News: The left leg injury linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffered late in the first quarter took much of the steam out of the Patriots' 31-21 Monday night victory over the Jets. There was no official update on Bruschi's condition the day after the game, although an optimist could take comfort in the sight of Bruschi walking out of Giants Stadium early Tuesday morning, albeit with a slight limp. Coach Bill Belichick's only comment on Bruschi's condition -- that his leg "tightened up on him" -- could also be interpreted as a positive sign since it hinted at a muscle problem and not something more serious.
Analysis: Without Bruschi, the Patriots will be a little less apt to stop Miami's run game in Week 17. Find a better DST unit to use.

Patriots DST allows 21 points
News: The Patriots DST allowed 21 points and 171 total net yards in Week 16 at N.Y. Jets. The defending champs did not allow the Jets to get a first down in the first half, but seemed to let up in the second half.
Analysis: The Patriots have been a fantastic Fantasy defense over the past few weeks and they are a great option for Week 17 against the Dolphins.

News: The Patriots DST shut out Tampa Bay, recording seven sacks and recovering a fumble in their 28-0 win in Week 15.

Pats D scores, almost shuts out
News: The Patriots defense racked up two sacks and three interceptions at Buffalo in Week 14, scoring a late defensive TD on an interception and holding the Bills to seven points.

Pats D sees Losman
News: The Patriots play at J.P. Losman and the Bills in Week 14. The Bills offense is ranked 29th overall in the league, scoring a total of 13 times on the season (and three were on Lee Evans touchdowns last week).
Analysis: New England will deal with RB Willis McGahee, but otherwise they make for a decent sleeper unit in leagues.

Patriots beat up again
News: The New England Patriots allowed 26 points and 420 yards in Week 12 at Kansas City.
Analysis: Both Trent Green and Larry Johnson had great games against a vulnerable Pats defense that has fallen out of the good graces of Fantasy owners. They are not a recommended Fantasy unit, but they do have a good matchup in Week 13 at home against a weak N.Y. Jets offense.

Patriots sign Artrell Hawkins
News: According to reports, the New England Patriots have signed CB Artrell Hawkins. The team also lost CB Randall Gay, whose injured ankle landed him on injured reserve this week. CB Ellis Hobbs should start in Gay's absence.

Pats mixing and matching
News: With rookie Ellis Hobbs getting his first ever start at CB and four-year veteran Michael Stone doing likewise at free safety, the Patriots now have used eight starting lineups in the secondary this season. Even more telling of their injury situation, they have started six players at free safety, including a new face each of the last five weeks.
Analysis: The Patriots DST has been banged up all year and has lost much of its Fantasy value. They do play the lowly Saints in Week 11, but owners should start healthier options if they can.
11/13/2005
, ,
New England defense shaky
News: The Patriots defense came up when it needed to in Miami in Week 10, but they still didn't register a sack and only had one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: New England's defense will be at home in Week 11 but against a rested Saints team. Maybe owners should consider other options before settling on the Pats.
News: Duane Starks (shoulder) was placed on I-R Thursday, ending his season who replaced Ty Law in the New England Patriots secondary. CB Randall Gay (ankle), DE Jarvis Green (shoulder), DE Marquis Hill (ankle), CB Ellis Hobbs (thigh), S James Sanders (ankle), DE Richard Seymore (knee) and DE Ty Warren (hip) are all listed as questionable for Week 10.
Analysis: Starks was the DB who replaced Ty Law in the New England Patriots secondary, but he had little value in IDP leagues. Still, the state of the Pats once vaunted 'D' is something to worry about. Despite regaining the likes of Tedy Bruschi, the number of injuries they've suffered this year has crippled what was one of the best units in the league.

Bruschi to return this week?
News: The New Bedford Standard-Times reports Tedy Bruschi (stroke) will play Week 8, according to LB Chad Brown. "Today my job is to be an inside linebacker," Brown said. "Whatever the future holds, I will try my best to be prepared for it. But today my job is to be an inside linebacker - and my job is to back up Tedy Bruschi and help him in any way I can and learn from him as much as I can."
Analysis: The return of Bruschi is a positive for the Patriots DST, but the unit as a whole still has little value outside of leagues with 12-plus teams.

Analysis: It looks like Bruschi will play again this season, which is a wild turn of events. This will help the New England defense as they get a leader back and a good player. See what role he plays when the team takes to the field again in Week 8.

News: Richard Seymour (knee) has been downgraded from probable to questionable for Week 6. He was one of 14 Patriots to be downgraded, so it looks like head coach Bill Belichick is making a point after last week's Michael Vick debacle.

Pats LB Johnson retires
News: Veteran linebacker Ted Johnson called it a career on July 28, passing on playing anymore in the NFL.

Bruschi out for the season
News: According to televised reports, linebacker Tedy Bruschi will not play in 2005. He suffered what was believed to be a minor stroke following the Super Bowl.
Analysis: This damages the value of the Patriots' defense a little bit, but not enough to make them any less valuable. They have a trio of LBs -- Monty Beisel, Chad Brown and Rosevelt Colvin -- who will replace him and be in a general rotation at the LB spot.

Bruschi back? Law too?
News: The Boston Herald reports that Bill Belichick contacted Ty Law to express his interest in re-signing the veteran cornerback. Adding Law would probably hurt the Patriots' salary cap, which already has $3 million in dead money because they cut Law earlier this offseason. Elsewhere, the Boston Globe reports that Tedy Bruschi is planning to play in 2005, although the team has not been informed yet.
Analysis: Other teams interested in Law include the Buccaneers, Chiefs, Jaguars, and notably the Jets and Dolphins. The Pats may not want to see Law go to a division rival. As for Bruschi, the veteran leader of the defense will only solidify the linebacking corps.

News: In addition to his duties as a defensive tackle sub and fullback sub, Dan Klecko may be adding linebacker to his resume. Although he's been practicing at DL and FB, he told the Metrowest Daily News that he's still practicing for work as a linebacker.
Analysis: Klecko's learning of the linebacker position may suggest more about Tedy Bruschi's future than anything else. Regardless, expect New England's D/ST to be one of the best and most complex in the NFL in 2005. They're worth a middle-to-late round pick in most leagues.

Bruschi's future uncertain
News: LB Tedy Bruschi (stroke) told WBZ-TV in Boston that he will take his time before making the "big decision" of whether he should get back on the field in 2005. "During the season we take it one game at a time, and right now in my life I'm taking it one day at a time," he said. "When it comes time for a decision to be made, we've been talking about it, my family and I, but that's a decision you don't rush into so I'm taking my time with it."

I just don't know except he will not play this week. He is out," Bill Belichick told the Boston Herald.
