Report: Cedric Benson has hung up his spikes

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/30/2013) Cedric Benson is 30 years old, has not run the ball in an NFL game since last October and is coming off a Lisfranc fracture. So it comes as little surprise that he is in what ESPN is referring to "retirement mode."

If he is indeed finished, he can be proud of a career highlighted by three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons for Cincinnati, 6,017 career rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns. He will have concluded his career by playing five games with Green Bay in 2012.

Packers, CedBen heading for reunion?

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/24/2013) ESPN reports the Packers and running back Cedric Benson will meet on Wednesday to talk about a new deal. Benson suffered a Lisfranc foot injury last October but has been rehabbing it; the Packers let Benson go back into free agency in March.

Report: Benson near 100 percent

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/18/2013) ESPN reports free agent running back Cedric Benson is getting closer to 100 percent health following a Lisfranc foot sprain suffered last October. A video showed Benson performing running drills in the University of Texas training facility. ESPN believes he's on some teams' radars but the Packers might not be one of them. Packers general manager Ted Thompson referred to Benson as "an unrestricted free agent" who "has the injury thing he has to get past."

Benson pays fine

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/14/2013) Packers running back Cedric Benson has paid fines for three citations in eastern Wisconsin. The Manitowoc County clerk of courts office says Benson paid a $200 animal at-large citation for an incident last month in which someone complained his two Rottweilers were running loose. He also paid more than $650 for speeding and driving without a valid license citations for another January incident. He was accused of driving 41 mph over the speed limit. WLUK-TV reports Benson still faces another animal-at-large citation. That citation says Benson's Rottweilers attacked 17 calves at his neighbor's farm in Maribel in December. A sheriff's department report says the dogs chewed on the calves' legs and that several suffered deep wounds. The report says Benson told deputies he had put up a fence to contain the dogs, but they managed to escape. That case is scheduled for court next Wednesday.

Benson has chance to stay in GB

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/30/2013) FOX Sports reports that impending free agent running back Cedric Benson has a "40 percent chance" of being on the roster for the Packers in Week 1 in 2013. The report says Benson's return to the Packers will likely be decided based on whether the team drafts a running back in April. Green Bay already has DuJuan Harris, James Starks and Alex Green on the roster for 2013. Benson played five games with the Packers in 2012 before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Benson deals with issues

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/24/2013) The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that Packers running back Cedric Benson is due in court next month to answer charges that his Rottweilers attacked calves owned by his neighbors. In an unrelated incident, Benson also faces traffic charges of driving 76 mph in a 35 mph zone and driving without a license. Charges filed by the county sheriff’s department claim that Benson’s dogs bit 17 calves Dec. 20. A member of the farmer’s family alleged that he found the dogs chewing the calves’ legs, and that several suffered “very deep wounds and possibly tendon damage.” The extent of the injuries to the livestock was not clear on Wednesday, but a police report said a veterinarian who examined the animals Dec. 20 “feels some may not make it through their injuries.” Deputies charged Benson with violating an ordinance prohibiting animals running at large, in connection with that incident. They charged him with a second such violation on Jan. 13, after receiving a complaint of dogs running loose in the neighborhood. Deputies said Benson acknowleged responsibility for the dogs and said he had been “having a hard time keeping them contained.”

Benson not expected back in GB

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/18/2013) The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that running back Cedric Benson, who is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason, is not expected back in Green Bay in 2013. The report says "it's doubtful" the Packers will take another chance on Benson, who signed during training camp and played in just five games before being put on injured reserve with a Lisfranc fracture in his foot.

Benson aims to play in 2013

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2013) The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Packers running back Cedric Benson, who didn't play after Week 5 because of a foot injury, isn't sure if he will be back in Green Bay, but he is preparing to play in the NFL next season. “I know there’s no certainty. I’m on a one-year deal, but I’m going to prepare and be in shape like I did the last offseason," said Benson, who is recovering from foot surgery. "I don’t know if they’re waiting on something, I can’t really say. But I know for certain my first priority is my foot. And once that’s done I’ll be right back into my training.”
