Matt Flynn back with Packers

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/15/2014) The Packers have signed free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, reports ESPN.

Flynn started five games in 2013, including four for the Packers (the other start was in Oakland), and completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,392 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He started in Green Bay when Aaron Rodgers was out with a collarbone injury.

He is expected to be No. 2 on the depth chart behind Rodgers again.

Packers coach wants Matt Flynn back

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2014) The market for Matt Flynn's services isn't as hot as it was a few years ago, but at least one team is interest in bring him in as a free agent. Packers coach Mike McCarthy told ESPNWisconsin.com Tuesday he hopes the organization will bring Flynn back as a reserve this offseason.

"I'd like to have Matt back," McCarthy said. "I thought Matt was a good addition to our football team. I have great respect and admiration for him, just being around him a lot on a positional basis. Yeah, I'm hoping financially it works out."

Flynn went 2-2 as a starter for the Packers a year ago, while filling in for the injured Aaron Rodgers. Flynn made his way back to the Packers after failing in three previous stops during the season.

Packers due to draft a quarterback

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/23/2014) The Packers couldn't win without Aaron Rodgers last season, so now they're determined to find a promising quarterback in the draft, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Green Bay has drafted only one quarterback, 2012 seventh-rounder B.J. Coleman, in the past five years.

The paper noted Matt Flynn is an impending free agent and Scott Tolzien may or may not be the answer as Green Bay's backup quarterback.

"I think we definitely need four, so I'm hopeful that we can get a young guy in the draft," coach Mike McCarthy told the paper. "That's something we're looking at and maybe taking even a harder look this year — well, that's not true, we've always taken a hard look.

"That's something that we're focused on."

Packers could bring back Matt Flynn

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/18/2014) The Packers should try to retain free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette

After watching Aaron Rodgers go down last season with a broken collarbone for eight games, the Packers need a capable backup in an emergency situation, and Flynn fits the bill. Flynn led the Packers to a pair of comeback victories and a tie before Rodgers’ return in the regular-season finale.

Matt Flynn fails down stretch in critical loss to Pittsburgh

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/22/2013) The Packers tried to catch lightning in a bottle twice with quarterback Matt Flynn while taking a conservative approach to returning injured Aaron Rodgers to the lineup. It all backfired on them Sunday against Pittsburgh.

The mistake-prone Flynn completed just 21 of 39 passes for 232 yards after firing four touchdown passes in a stirring comeback last week in Dallas. He overthrew a pick-six to Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen while colliding with tight end Andrew Quarless late in the third quarter, then fumbled with less than two minutes remaining in the game to allow Pittsburgh to tally the game-winning touchdown.

He had a chance to redeem himself, but missed wide receiver Jarrett Boykin in the end zone on the final play despite the fact that Jordy Nelson was open.

Flynn performed well at times, opening the scoring on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Boykin and finishing with a 69.6 quarterback rating. If Rodgers doesn't return, Flynn will try to gain more consistency in Week 17 at Chicago.

Matt Flynn getting another start

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/20/2013) With Aaron Rodgers officially ruled out, the Packers will turn to Matt Flynn to start at quarterback for the fourth straight game in Week 16 against the Steelers.

Flynn is coming off his best game of the season, as he passed for 299 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the Cowboys.

Can Matt Flynn repeat Week 15 success?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/19/2013) For the 5 percent of Fantasy owners that started Packers quarterback Matt Flynn in Week 15, he came through in a big way by racking up 33 Fantasy points. Though, now you have to decide whether it is time to go back to the well in Week 16 or choose another option to start?

It is looking like Flynn will make a fourth straight start in place of Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh. Though, the Steelers aren't as favorable of a matchup as were the Cowboys, who are yielding a league-high 25.4 Fantasy points per week to quarterbacks. The Steelers are yielding just 18.3 Fantasy points per week to quarterbacks.

However, quarterbacks have had a little more success against Pittsburgh in recent weeks. Four quarterbacks in the last eight games have surpassed 20 Fantasy points. Quarterbacks are averaging 20 Fantasy points in the last eight games.

Flynn was definitely a sleeper start last week because of the matchup, but he really didn't start to play well against the Cowboys until after halftime when he needed rally Green Bay from a major deficit and was forced to throw. Perhaps last week will give Flynn the confidence he needs moving forward, but the Steelers aren't exactly the easiest matchup, so Flynn is more of a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback this week.

Report: Players expecting Matt Flynn, not Aaron Rodgers

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/18/2013) An unnamed Packers player told ESPN that all the team's starters expect Matt Flynn, not Aaron Rodgers, to start at quarterback Sunday vs. Pittsburgh. Rodgers (collarbone) has not been medically cleared, and Flynn again took the first-team reps in Wednesday's practice.

Packers game planning for Matt Flynn, not Aaron Rodgers

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/16/2013) Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has missed the last six games with a collarbone injury, will be re-evaluated Tuesday and the team will set a plan on Wednesday. However, McCarthy added as of Monday the team is game planning for Matt Flynn to be under center Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh.

Matt Flynn does Aaron Rodgers impression against Cowboys

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/15/2013) Matt Flynn was Matt Flynn in the first half Sunday at Dallas. He was Aaron Rodgers in the second half.

At least he played like Rodgers, engineering the comeback of the year in the NFL. He threw four second-half touchdown passes to turn a 26-3 deficit into a 37-36 win.

He seemed off-balance and off-target in the second quarter after completing his first four passes. Flynn was just 10 of 17 for 117 yards and an interception in the first half, but hit on 16 of 22 for 182 yards and the four scores thereafter. Included were an 11-yarder to running back James Starks and a 3-yarder to wideout James Jones in the fourth quarter that cut the deficit to 36-31.

Flynn, who led the Packers to five touchdowns in five possessions in the second half, might not have a chance to take his momentum and run with it in Week 16. Rodgers could return from his collarbone injury in time to take the field against visiting Pittsburgh.

Porous Cowboys not enough to make Matt Flynn a Fantasy play

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/13/2013) It shouldn't matter to Fantasy owners that Packers quarterback Matt Flynn could give way to Aaron Rodgers for the game Sunday in Dallas. Anyone thinking about playing Flynn at this point needs to reconsider in a hurry.

Flynn has yet to throw for more than one touchdown pass in any game this season. He has been sacked 12 times in the last two games combined. And even though he has a favorable matchup against the Cowboys, he is no viable Fantasy option, especially in the playoffs. He is averaging only 205 yards passing per start.

Granted, the Cowboys are awful against the pass. They rank dead last in the NFL in yards allowed through the air (3,880) and 31st in passing touchdowns given up (26). Their own prolific offense will likely force Flynn to throw often. But none of the three CBSSports.com senior Fantasy writers rank Flynn higher than 18th among NFL quarterbacks this week and Dave Richard doesn't list him at all.

Take their advice. Keep Flynn on your bench or waiver wires.

Cowboys prepping for Matt Flynn and Aaron Rodgers

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12/12/2013) The Cowboys are preparing for both Matt Flynn and Aaron Rodgers, according to the Star-Telegram

Rodgers has not been cleared to return from a broken collarbone yet, but the team doesn't want to take any chances. "We’ve got to go out there and prepare for both," defensive end George Selvie said. He added that the Packers employ a different scheme with Rodgers at quarterback, so the team needs to be prepared for both situations. Rodgers has been participating in team drills, and seems close to returning.

Matt Flynn currently on track to start Week 15

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/9/2013) Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday the plan for now is to prepare for Matt Flynn to start at quarterback Week 15 at Dallas with Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) still not medically cleared to return. Rodgers is expected to work out Tuesday and be re-evaluated Wednesday, however.

Matt Flynn efficient in comeback effort

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/8/2013) Coming off a disastrous performance Week 13 at Detroit, quarterback Matt Flynn rewarded the Packers' faith in him by leading the team to a comeback win against the Falcons in Week 14. Granted, he got some help from the defense, but after trailing 21-10 at halftime, the Packers took a 22-21 lead on Flynn's 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Quarless early in the fourth quarter.

It was Flynn's only touchdown pass on the day, but he completed 24 of 32 passes for 258 yards and ran six times for 28. He did commit two turnovers that led the Falcons scores, but he was efficient in stretches, completing 10 of his first 11 passes and 10 of his final 11.

With Aaron Rodgers returning to practice Thursday, Flynn may not get another chance to spell the star quarterback, but if Rodgers suffers a setback in his recovery from a broken collarbone, Flynn will look to pick up where he left off Week 15 at Dallas.

Matt Flynn hoping for better

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/4/2013) Packers quarterback Matt Flynn was a disaster in his first start in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers Week 13 at Detroit. Not only did he throw for just 139 yards, but he committed three turnovers and took seven sacks.

But in Week 14 against the Falcons, he has a better chance to succeed. The Falcons rank 20th against the pass, giving up 247.8 yards per game, and have surrendered the seventh-most Fantasy points to quarterbacks. They rank second-to-last in the NFL in sacks and third-to-last in takeaways.

And if nothing else, coach Mike McCarthy seems to have faith in Flynn, choosing him over the stronger-armed Scott Tolzien because of experience.

Of course, the Packers haven't officially ruled Rodgers out for Week 14, but he has missed the last four weeks with a broken collarbone. Assuming Flynn starts, which is looking likely, he's not a terrible option if you're short on alternatives in a two-quarterback league.

Matt Flynn to take starter's reps despite Week 13 disaster

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/3/2013) Packers coach Mike McCarthy said quarterback Matt Flynn will get the starter's reps in Wednesday's practice despite Flynn's performance Week 13. Flynn hit 10 of 20 throws for 139 yards with an interception and two fumbles in the loss to the Lions. He took seven sacks.

McCarthy noted this will be Flynn's first chance to get a full week of reps and that he's more experienced than Scott Tolzien. Starter Aaron Rodgers will practice some but has not been cleared to return from his broken collarbone.

Green Bay hosts the Falcons on Sunday.

Matt Flynn falters in ugly loss at Detroit

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/28/2013) Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, starting in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers, had a miserable outing against the Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Playing behind a beaten-up offensive line Flynn was sacked seven times, hit another nine times, fumbled twice and was picked off once. He completed 10 of 20 passes for 139 yards, failing to score. He added 4 rushing yards.

It is not known if Flynn will continue to start next week when the Packers host the Falcons. The team might go with fellow backup Scott Tolzien or welcome back Rodgers with open arms.

Matt Flynn gets the nod for Week 13

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/27/2013) Packers quarterback Matt Flynn will start Week 13 against the Lions.

Aaron Rodgers was able to get through individual drills Tuesday, but he's not ready to return yet. Flynn took all the starter's reps during practices during the week, leading to the decision to name him the starter. Flynn provided a much needed boost to the team's offense off the bench Week 12. The start is Flynn's first with the Packers since 2011.

Packers coach still not ready to name Week 13 starter

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/26/2013) While Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) went through individual drills Tuesday, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said it remains unlikely Rodgers will play Thursday at Detroit (Week 13). Matt Flynn worked with the first-team offense Tuesday, but McCarthy didn't name him the starter and said the team is also preparing Scott Tolzien for Week 13.

"Matt Flynn took the starter reps today. That's where we are. Still want to make sure both quarterbacks are ready," McCarthy said.

Packers coach holding off naming Week 13 starting QB

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/25/2013) Packers coach Mike McCarthy indicated Monday he doesn't expect Aaron Rodgers to be back in the lineup Thursday at Detroit, but he wouldn't name a starting quarterback for Week 13. McCarthy said the team will prepare both Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn for Thursday's game.

Flynn came off the bench Sunday against Minnesota in the third quarter to replace an ineffective Tolzien, who made a second straight start. Flynn rallied Green Bay to a 26-all tie. McCarthy said Flynn "played very well and deserves to start," but said he will prepare both quarterbacks.

Matt Flynn provides spark off bench Week 12

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2013) Packers quarterback Matt Flynn came off the bench in the second half Sunday to help Green Bay pull off a 26-all tie against NFC North foe Minnesota Week 12. Flynn replaced an ineffective Scott Tolzien, who was making his second straight start in place of Aaron Rodgers (collarbone), in the third quarter with Green Bay trailing 20-7.

Flynn completed 21 of 36 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown, as he helped Green Bay rally from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Flynn's only touchdown pass was a 6-yard strike to Jarret Boykin with 3:30 left in regulation.

Though, Flynn's biggest throw might have come on the team's final drive in regulation. On 4th-and-6 from Minnesota's 40-yard line, Flynn heaved a pass downfield as he was about to get hit. The pass was underthrown for James Jones, but Jones came back to haul in a 28-yard pass at the 12-yard line. Minnesota was flagged for offsides, but the penalty was declined and a few plays later Mason Crosby tied the game at 23 with a 27-yard field goal.

Flynn, who rushed for 24 yards, had a few more big throws in overtime, which included a 22-yard pass to Jones and a 34-yard pass to Jarret Boykin, which helped set up a Crosby 20-yard field goal. Flynn had a chance to win the game with a 2-yard touchdown pass, but he badly overthrew Jordy Nelson.

The Packers have a quick turnaround Week 13, playing on Thanksgiving at Detroit. After Sunday's game, coach Mike McCarthy wasn't ready to commit to Flynn starting Thursday.

Matt Flynn signs for one year

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/14/2013) Packers quarterback Matt Flynn signed a one-year deal with the club, according to ESPN.

Flynn is expected to back up quarterback Scott Tolzien. He'll make $294,000 the rest of the season.
