News: The Cardinals added cornerback Jamell Fleming (Oklahoma) and safety Justin Bethel (Presbyterian) to their defense in the NFL Draft. Fleming, a third-round pick, is a tough zone coverage cornerback. Bethel is a tweener who is also tough and has good speed but wasn't tested playing FCS-level competition. He's also a good kick blocker.
Analysis: The Cardinals are coming back mostly in tact this season, namely along their front seven. Pass rush will be a big question for them: Can Calais Campbell repeat his feats from last year with unproven edge rushers in O'Brien Schofield and Sam Acho helping out? We wouldn't trust the Cardinals DST as anything more than a one-week option available off waivers during the season.
News: The Cardinals were able to slow down the Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks in Week 17. Lynch did rack up 86 yards on the ground, but was held out of the end zone for the first time in 11 games in the 23-20 win. Arizona held Seattle to 191 yards passing, while forcing a turnover and racking up a pair of sacks.
Analysis: Arizona's defense was pretty bad to start out the season, but really came on late. The unit finished with year with 40 sacks and four touchdowns, while forcing 18 turnovers. With a young nucleus in place, the Cardinals DST could make some noise next season. Keep an eye on what pieces the team decides to add in the offseason. For now, consider the Cardinals a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into 2012.
News: The Cardinals will be going up against one of the hottest running backs in the league in Marshawn Lynch when they face the Seahawks in Week 17. Lynch has rushed for 855 yards with nine touchdowns over the last eight games, and also has a receiving score over that span. Arizona ranks 18th in the league against both the run and pass while Seattle ranks 21st in rushing and 24th in passing.
Analysis: The Cardinals have recorded 38 sack thus far with four DST scores but have picked off just nine passes. While one of those interceptions came against Seattle in Week 3, their run defense could give Arizona trouble on Sunday. The Cardinals have not been a reliable play in Fantasy all year long so consider their DST as a No. 2 option for Week 17.
News: Arizona effectively handled Cincinnati's strong running game, but could not overcome its own mistakes during a 23-16 loss to the Bengals in Week 16. The Cardinals held RB Cedric Benson to just 57 yards on 16 carries and also recovered both of his fumbles in the game -- the first time he's lost a fumble this season. However, Arizona turned the ball over three times -- all on interceptions -- and recorded just two sacks.
Analysis: For most of the game, the Cardinals couldn't do anything right. Rookie DB Patrick Peterson picked off a pass in the third quarter, but the interception was nullified by Arizona's second roughing-the-passer penalty of the game. What's more, Peterson hurt his left hamstring on the play and left the game and didn't return. He wore a protective boot after the game. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his status as he has been one of the few bright spots for the Cardinals this year. Consider Arizona a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 17 against Seattle.
News: The Arizona defense will attempt to lock down strong another rushing attack during Week 16 against Cincinnati. The Cardinals have held three of their past four opponents to less than 100 rushing total yards en route to an impressive four-game winning streak. Next up for Arizona: Bengals RB Cedric Benson, who is averaging 68.5 yards per game this season. In addition, Cincinnati is 5-1 when Benson rushes for at least 75 yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals' defense has also been limited by its recent inability to create turnovers. Arizona has mustered just one takeaway in its past three games and the Bengals do not turn the ball over often. In fact, Benson recorded his first fumble of the season last Sunday. However, the Cardinals boast a stellar special teams paced by rookie DB Patrick Peterson, who is the first player in NFL history with four punt return touchdowns of 80-plus yards in a season. Consider Arizona a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 16.
News: Arizona didn't do much on special teams on Sunday as Cleveland tried to keep the ball out of DB Patrick Peterson's hands. The only time he got a chance to return a punt he almost broke it up the sideline. The Cardinals got two sacks on back-to-back plays from LB O'Brien Schofield, the second causing a fumble. Arizona recovered and ran into the end zone, but they wouldn't get credit for the touchdown. The play had to be challenged to get the call reversed. Arizona would eventually score a field goal off that good filed position. The Cards finished the game with two sacks and a fumble recovery in the 20-17 win.
Analysis: The Cardinals dealt with backup QB Seneca Wallace in Week 15, but he scrambled to big up yards with his feet and through the air. They won't have to deal with Andy Dalton's running capability next week though, which is a plus. If Arizona can contain the running game of the Bengals, they would be a nice DST option. But with the playoffs here in Fantasy leagues, there are better matchups out there.
News: Arizona hosts Cleveland in Week 15, which won't be a game of offensive juggernauts. The Browns are totaling just 291.7 yards of offense per contest this season, which is among the lowest in the league. They also average just 13.7 points a game. The Browns might not have Colt McCoy this Sunday either, which means the Cleveland will likely rely on the running attack more.
Analysis: The Cardinals don't have a very formidable defense, but they are facing a team that has struggling mightily on offense this season. Arizona was able to sack Alex Smith five times last weekend and if they can put pressure on either McCoy or Seneca Wallace, the Browns will make some mistakes. Fantasy owners still alive should consider the Cardinals DST as a low-end No. 1 option for Week 15, solely based on the matchup.
News: The Cardinals DST was able to limit the 49ers to 19 points on just 233 yards of total offense in Week 14. The unit held San Francisco to just 143 yards passing and only surrendered one first down in the second half. While Arizona failed to force any turnovers in the 21-19 victory, the Cardinals did get to Alex Smith five times and held the 49ers out of the end zone in each of their three trips in the red zone.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense delivered another solid effort on Sunday, allowing just one touchdown and under 300 yards of total offense. After surrendering 20 touchdowns over the first seven games of the season, the unit has only surrendered six touchdowns over the past six games and only two on the ground. Now the Arizona will welcome in the offensively challenged Browns to town in Week 15. Consider the Cardinals a No. 2 Fantasy DST against Cleveland.
News: The Cardinals defense has allowed just one rushing touchdown in the past five weeks and just five overall TDs over that stretch. Coach Ken Whisenhunt credits the units recent to defensive coordinator Ray Horton. "Everybody wants the instant, up-and-running defense. It was a tough stretch for us early but we stayed consistent. (Ray's) a very disciplined, good teacher, who understands the scheme and does a great job communicating." The Cardinals will host the 49ers on Sunday.
Analysis: After surrendering 20 touchdowns over the first seven games of the season, the Cardinals defense has really tightened things up of late. While San Francisco doesn't put up a ton of yards and points most weeks, they are very efficient on offense and rarely turn the ball over. The Cardinals DST in ranked 17th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 29 sacks, while forcing 15 turnovers. Consider the Cardinals a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 14.
News: Arizona held Dallas to just 75 yards on the ground in Week 13, which has been propelling the Cowboys to victories. While they did not force a turnover, the Cardinals did sack Tony Romo five times and forced him to make some poor decisions. The Cardinals would go on to beat the Cowboys, 19-13, in overtime.
Analysis: The Cardinals didn't get much out of Patrick Peterson in the return game as the Cowboys pinned Arizona deep plenty of times on Sunday. Looking ahead Arizona faces San Francisco in Week 14. That's not exactly a good matchup which is why Fantasy owners should leave the Cardinals DST on waivers.
News: Arizona hosts a Dallas team in Week 13 that has battled through injuries on the offensive side of the ball this season. But the emergence of DeMarco Murray in the running game will provide a tough task for the Cardinals. Arizona has been allowing 123 rushing yards per contest and have been burned for 12 rushing scores in 11 games.
Analysis: Arizona has been able to force some turnovers the past few weeks and have been getting the job done on special teams. The big question is can they continue to play well enough to win games and keep the offense in contests? Tony Romo has been known to crumble under pressure late in games, so if the Cards can keep it close they may be able to fluster Romo into making some mistakes. But with the playoffs looming, Fantasy owners should not be banking on Arizona's DST for Week 13 -- leave them on waivers.
News: The Cardinals DST came up big when they needed to in the Week 12 win at St. Louis on Sunday. The Cardinals DST held St. Louis to 272 yards in the game as they won 23-20 on a Jay Feely 22-yard field goal with just over four minutes to play. The Cardinals DST forced the Rams to lose two fumbles in the game as the only two turnovers forced. The Cardinals DST managed two sacks of Sam Bradford in the game. The big play for the Cardinals DST came on rookie Patrick Peterson's 80-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was Peterson's fourth punt return for a TD on the year, tying an NFL record.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST recorded its third defensive or special teams touchdown in five games against the Rams on Sunday. The Cardinals DST has recorded double digits in Fantasy points in four of the last five games as the unit has been pretty stout over that span. That said, heading into Week 13 against Dallas, the Cowboys should be able to move the ball pretty well against Arizona. The Cardinals DST has not been a popular unit and they should only be used in a pinch Week 13.
News: The Cardinals DST head into Week 12 at St. Louis coming off a dud of a game at San Francisco Week 11. The 49ers racked up 23 points and 431 yards on the Cardinals DST as the unit didn't manage a sack and forced just one turnover. The good news, heading into the Week 12 game against the Rams, is that the Cardinals DST excelled the last time they faced St. Louis. Arizona met the Rams Week 9 and held them to just nine points in the game. Arizona picked up four sacks of Sam Bradford in that contest and Patrick Peterson also returned a punt 99 yards for a TD.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is certainly in better shape than the offense for Arizona at the moment, that is for sure. While the DST stunk it up against the Niners last week, they did have a pretty solid three-game stretch against the Eagles, Rams and Ravens prior to that. St. Louis has been a disaster this season and the Rams are allowing the most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units on the season. No team has allowed more sacks than have the Rams and Arizona had four against them the last time the two teams played just a few weeks ago. The Cardinals DST has not been a popular unit, but Fantasy owners could certainly do worse in Week 12.
News: The Cardinals DST was nothing special in Week 11. They allowed 23 points, had no sacks, and forced just one turnover, an interception by Daryl Wahsington in the end zone. They also blocked first quarter David Akers field goals. The return game was stymied for another week as well.
Analysis: The Cardinals had been riding a pretty decent three game streak of scoring at least 10 points, but their inability to get to the quarterback and force turnovers led them to a pretty lackluster performance. The two field goal blocks help, but overall it wasn't their best effort. Consider them a No. 2 DST for Week 12 at St. Louis.
News: Arizona's defense has put up three straight weeks of above average Fantasy production, averaging 14.33 points per game and topping 10 in each game. The defense has allowed just one touchdown over the last eight quarters, an especially impressive stat when you consider they faced the dynamic Eagles offense in Week 10.
Analysis: The Cardinals will face another touch matchup when they travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in Week 11. While San Francisco doesn't put up a ton of yards, they do rank 7th in the NFL in scoring per game, and are very careful with the football, turning it over just eight times on the year. With their strong rushing attack and Alex Smith being stingy with the interceptions, there's not much room for Fantasy DSTs to put up points when facing them. Opposing DSTs are averaging just 6.33 points per game against the 49ers. Even with dynamic special teams player Patrick Peterson returning kicks and punts, consider the Cardinals to be a low-end No. 2 DST in Week 11.
News: Arizona's defense has put up three straight weeks of above average Fantasy production, averaging 14.33 points per game and topping 10 in each game. However, they face a touch matchup when they travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in Week 11.
Analysis: While San Francisco doesn't put up a ton of yards, they do rank 7th in the NFL in scoring per game, and are very careful with the football, turning it over just eight times on the year.
News: The Arizona defense received an unexpected surprise prior to its Week 10 outing when standout Philadelphia WR DeSean Jackson was ruled inactive for disciplinary reasons. The Cardinals capitalized on his absence and permitted just 289 total yards, including 128 passing yards by QB Michael Vick during a 21-17 victory over the Eagles. It was the first time since Week 3 at Seattle that Arizona held an opponent under 300 yards.
Analysis: Without one of his top receiving threats, the Cardinals pressured Vick and recorded two interceptions and two sacks. Arizona now has six sacks in its past two games after notching a season-high four sacks in Week 9 against lowly St. Louis. The Cardinals suffered a letdown on special teams as Patrick Peterson, who returned a punt 99 yards for a touchdown last Sunday, had a long return of only 10 yards. Consider Arizona a No. 2 Fantasy DST against San Francisco in Week 11.
News: In order for Arizona to keep pace with Philadelphia during the teams' Week 10 matchup, the Cardinals know they must limit the Eagles' speedy offensive threats in QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy and WR DeSean Jackson. Thats the most talented offense in the league as far as athleticism and speed, Arizona DL Darnell Dockett told the team's official website. You dont go in thinking about that, the speed and athleticism. You go in, play football, and you play hard. Despite a 3-5 record, Philadelphia is averaging 25.4 points per game and leads the NFL with a stellar 172.3 rushing yards per game.
Analysis: The Cardinals halted a six-game losing skid with a victory over St. Louis last week. The outing also stopped a four-game streak in which Arizona permitted at least 30 points to opponents. Cardinals rookie Patrick Peterson was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after taking a punt 99 yards for the game-winning score in overtime against the Rams. He became the first player in NFL history with three punt return touchdowns in his first eight career games. However, the Eagles are certainly better than the Rams, which could lead to a long day for the visitors on defense. Fantasy owners should consider other DST options for Week 10.
News: Arizona sacked St. Louis QB Sam Bradford four times in Week 9 and rookie DB Patrick Peterson also picked Bradford off once. While it looked bleak for a while, the Cardinals eventually stepped up. Calais Campbell blocked the potential game-winning field goal for the Rams, forcing overtime. Then Peterson would return a punt 99 yards for a touchdown, giving Arizona the 19-13 win. The Cardinals did allow Steven Jackson to run for 130 yards on the day.
Analysis: The Cardinals barely played well enough to get the win. Things won't be as easy next Sunday as they travel to Philly to take on the Eagles. With a potent offense next weekend, the Cardinals DST is not a recommended Fantasy option.
News: Arizona hosts St. Louis in Week 9, a team that is coming off it's first win of the year. The Rams beat the high-octane Saints last Sunday, as they were fueled by power running back Steven Jackson the majority of the game. Arizona will have to slow him down if they have a shot. Opposing DSTs are averaging 16.14 Fantasy points per contest versus the Rams.
Analysis: St. Louis might without starter Sam Bradford again, so Arizona has that going for them. But the Cardinals gave up 21 unanswered points in the second half last week, letting the win slip away. Even though they have a favorable matchup in Week 9, the Cardinals DST is nothing but a low-end No. 2 option for Fantasy owners.
News: With an inconsistent offense limiting its progress this season, the Arizona defense knew it could not afford mistakes in its Week 8 matchup at Baltimore. After a strong first half, the Cardinals committed three pass-interference penalties either in or near the end zone during the third quarter, which turned into three Ravens rushing touchdowns. Arizona relinquished an 18-point lead at halftime in a 30-27 loss. "There was a lot of pushing and shoving going on, on both sides of the ball," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Unfortunately, we got called for some big plays."
Analysis: While the Cardinals permitted 21 unanswered points in the second half, their special teams unit shined again. Patrick Peterson returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, his second score of the season. He is the eighth player in franchise history to return at least two punts for touchdowns in a season. Arizona did recorded three sacks -- its highest total since Week 3 -- and faces a better matchup in Week 9 against St. Louis. Consider the Cardinals a No. 2 Fantasy DST versus the Rams, who might be without QB Sam Bradford.
News: Arizona enters its Week 8 matchup at Baltimore on a five-game losing streak that has likely dropped the team out of playoff contention in the NFC. The past two losses have been blowouts as the Cardinals defense has been overworked lately after the first four outings of the season were decided by seven points or less. In each of the past two weeks, Arizona has surrendered at least 300 total yards and forced just one total turnover.
Analysis: The Cardinals will attempt to halt their woeful skid Sunday against the Ravens' inconsistent offense. Baltimore managed just seven points in its previous game against Jacksonville, the first time the Ravens were held to fewer than double-digits this season. Part of the reasons for Arizona's struggles has been its lack of pressure on the quarterback. Since recording four sacks against Seattle in Week 3, the Cardinals have tallied just four sacks combined since. Consider Arizona a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 8.
News: Entering the Week 7 matchup against Pittsburgh, Arizona defensive coordinator Ray Horton was terrified of the matchup between Steelers star WR Mike Wallace and his struggling cornerbacks. Wallace validated those concerns by getting behind veteran DBs Richard Marshall and Rashad Johnson for a 95-yard touchdown reception -- the longest pass play in Pittsburgh history -- as the Steelers cruised to a 32-20 win. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger finished with 361 yards and three touchdown passes as the Cardinals failed to register an interception.
Analysis: Arizona was able to pressure Roethlisberger and got several hits on the quarterback, but finished with only two sacks. The Cardinals have totaled just four sacks in their past three games while allowing at least 30 points in every contest. They also permitted 445 total yards to the Steelers, the third opponent this season to amass at least 400 yards of offense on the lowly defensive unit. Fantasy owners should consider Arizona low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for its Week 8 matchup at Baltimore.
News: At 6-foot-5, Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger is one of the toughest signal-callers to take down in the NFL despite being hampered by a toe injury. Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt, whose team hosts Roethlisberger and the Steelers in Week 7, has put a focus on tackling in order to prevent him from scrambling in the pocket on Sunday. Its something that can get frustrating if you get to him and you dont bring him down," Whisenhunt said. "All we can do is make a point of wrapping him up because hes a very strong player.
Analysis: The Cardinals received an additional week to prepare for Roethlisberger and are coming off their bye week following their worst loss of the season against Minnesota (34-10). Arizona has been unable to effectively pressure opposing quarterbacks and notched just one sack in each of its past two outings. The team's defense forced just one turnover in Week 5 -- the third time it's failed to produce multiple takeaways. Opposing defenses are averaging 12.0 Fantasy points per game against the Steelers. Consider the Cardinals a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Cardinals official website reports DB Kerry Rhodes has a broken foot and will be out a "number of weeks." However, the injury is not season-ending.
Analysis: This is not only a big blow to the Cardinals secondary but to Fantasy owners. The Cardinals are on a bye in Week 6, but it seems Rhodes will be out a little longer than one week. Keep him reserved in Fantasy IDP formats. The Cardinals DST is a low-end Fantasy option to begin with, but Rhodes absence makes them a little less of an appealing option moving forward.
News: The Cardinals DST could not stop the Minnesota running game early in the Week 5 loss to the Vikings. Adrian Peterson scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, and the rout was on. The Cardinals DST gave up 332 total yards to the Vikings as Minnesota won the game 34-10. The Cardinals DST forced just one Minnesota turnover as Michael Jenkins lost a fumble after a catch in the game. Arizona managed just one sack as Daryl Washington got to Donovan McNabb in the contest.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST has been a decent unit at times this season with double-digit scoring games twice on the year. That said, the last two games for the Cardinals DST against the Giants and Vikings have been absolute duds with just two sacks and three forced fumbles in those contests. Heading into a bye in Week 6, Fantasy owners should have the Cardinals on waivers or reserved in all formats.
News: The Cardinals have played two mediocre teams this season in four games. Facing Carolina Week 1 and Seattle Week 3, the Cardinals DST recorded 14 Fantasy points in each game. They combined for 12 points in Week 2 at Washington and Week 4 against the Giants. The Cardinals DST must play at Minnesota in Week 5, which could mean a positive situation against the 0-4 Vikings. Last week against the Giants, the Cardinals DST forced two turnovers and managed just one sack.
Analysis: Although the Vikings have not been a good football this season, and that would usually mean good things for the Cardinals DST, we're not so sure in Week 5. That is because the Vikings have not given up many Fantasy points to opposing DST units this season. Minnesota has only given up three turnovers on the entire season. While we expect the Cardinals to play well against the Vikings, we cannot recommend the DST as anything higher than a No. 2 unit for the Week 5 scoring period.
News: Arizona's defense stepped up to the plate from the get go on Sunday against New York -- at the beginning of the game. They put them in a 3rd-and-long on the opening drive and forced a fumble deep in the Giants territory. They would sack Eli Manning once in the game, but could not contain him in the fourth quarter as he threw both his touchdown strikes in the last stanza. Manning finished the game with 321 passing yards. Arizona did hold New York to just 54 yards on the ground, but it wouldn't be enough to win the game. The Giants would win the game, 31-27.
Analysis: Arizona always seems to do one thing well, but can't put together a complete game. They blew another fourth-quarter lead, which doesn't make the coach happy. "This is three games in a row when we had the ball in our hand at the end with a chance to do something and we haven't been able to do it," Ken Whisenhunt said. Heading into Week 5, Fantasy owners should view Arizona as more of a No. 2 DST option, despite playing the winless Vikings.
News: Arizona has nine sacks on the year and will look to add to that by getting to Eli Manning in Week 4. Manning has been sacked 10 times so far this season. The Cardinals are allowing 397.7 total yards of offense this year. The Giants' offense isn't potent, but is averaging 324 yards and 23.7 points per contest through the first three weeks.
Analysis: Arizona still has some work to do on the defensive side of the ball, but they are a work in progress. The Cardinals will continue to tweak what works for them moving forward, but they are still not a No. 1 DST option. Fantasy owners should view them as more of a No. 2 DST unit for Week 4.
News: Arizona held Seattle to 171 passing yards in Week 3, but allowed the Seahawks to pile up 122 yards on the ground. Marshawn Lynch got the bulk of that (73), but Tarvaris Jackson would scamper in for a touchdown. Despite Arizona getting an interception and sacking Jackson four times, the Cardinals would still lose the game, 13-10.
Analysis: Arizona had been getting torched through the air, but perhaps focusing on containing the pass led to some holes opening up for the run. The Cardinals will continue to tweak what works for them moving forward, but they are still not a No. 1 DST option. With the Giants coming to town next week, Fantasy owners should look at a different DST unit instead of the Cardinals.
News: Arizona's defense is giving up 466 total yards of offense per game this year, something DL Darnell Dockett says isn't the secondary's fault. "As a defensive line, when we make a mistake y'all never see it. If one of the cornerbacks or safeties makes a mistake, oh boy, it's all on SportsCenter," Dockett said. The Cardinals have recorded five sacks this year and three interceptions.
Analysis: Arizona is staying together on defense off the field, so now it is just a matter of putting it all together on the field. While they haven't been great by any stretch yet this year, the Cardinals have a good matchup this Sunday. Fantasy owners should consider the Cardinals DST as a borderline No. 1 option for Week 3.
News: The Cardinals DST couldn't stop the Redskins on fourth-and-3 late in the game as Washington scored a touchdown on a Santana Moss 18-yard pass from Rex Grossman. After a 34-yard field goal with 1:45 remaining to take the lead, the Cardinals suffered the 22-21 defeat in Week 2 on Sunday in Washington. The Cardinals DST started hot as they intercepted Grossman on his first two drives. That would be all the turnovers they would get in the game, however. The Cardinals finished with one sack as Kerry Rhodes took Grossman down.
Analysis: If you take away the special teams touchdown Week 1, the Cardinals DST has recorded five sacks and forced just three turnovers in two weeks of the season. The Cardinals DST has not been able to stop anything on defense and should only be considered a low-end unit heading into Week 3 in Seattle.
News: The Cardinals DST had a decent game Week 1 against Carolina with one turnover forced, four sacks and a defensive touchdown. They will have a much tougher test in Week 2 at Washington, however. The Redskins allowed the Giants DST in Week 1 just four sacks and one turnover as the Giants DST did not perform well.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had a special teams touchdown in Week 1 and we just don't see them duplicating that in Week 2. If they do, it would be a fluke. Fantasy owners should seek better options and consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 or 3 option, at best.
News: The Cardinals DST had tough time slowing down the Panthers offense in Week 1. Arizona surrendered 477 yards of total offense in the contest with 403 of that coming through the air. The unit also gave up 77 yards rushing but only allowed seven points after halftime. The Cardinals were able to force a turnover in the 28-21 contest and finished with four sacks and scored a special teams touchdown thanks to rookie Patrick Peterson's 89-year punt return.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense played OK on Sunday, but showed some gaping holes in the secondary. Rookie Cam Newton had all day to pick apart the unit and did for most of the afternoon. However, Airzona did well to stop the run and were able to score a special teams touchdown late, to salvage a few Fantasy points for owners. However, the unit definitely appears to be a work in progress and could be in for a long day next Sunday in Washington. Fantasy owners should consider the Cardinals at best a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 2 against Washington.
News: The Cardinals defense will be looking to slow down Cam Newton and the Panthers in Week 1. Arizona's defense allowed an average of 228.4 yards and 27.1 points per game last season. The Panthers offense finished near the bottom of the rankings in 2010, averaging just 143.1 yards and 12.3 points per game. The Cardinals DST is ranked eighth, in terms of Fantasy points last season, racking up 33 sacks, 26 turnovers and scoring 10 touchdowns.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is hoping to improve during the 2011 campaign and seem to have a very favorable matchup on Sunday. The Panthers were one of the worst offensive teams in the league last season and will be starting a rookie QB on the road. However, Carolina can still be a very dangerous team on the ground and the Cardinals struggled to defend the run at times last year. Fantasy owners should consider Arizona a No.2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 1.
News: Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt announced Monday that safety Adrian Wilson has a torn bicep, which he suffered over the weekend. He will postpone surgery and rehab the injury. How his body reacts will determine his expected return, but Whisenhunt said Wilson will play in 2011.
Analysis: This is going to be an interesting rehab process for Wilson since a torn bicep isn't a minor injury. Fantasy owners shouldn't take Wilson with more than a late-round Fantasy flier in IDP formats because he is likely to miss the start of the season. The Cardinals DST also takes a hit because Wilson was one of their top playmakers. They are still nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy option. Hazma Abdullah and Rashad Johnson will battle for playing time in Wilson's absence.
News: The Cardinals used the fifth overall pick in the NFL draft to select Patrick Peterson, a confident, highly regarded cornerback from LSU who says he expects to immediately assume the starting cornerback spot alongside Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He's joined by Texas outside linebacker Sam Acho, UNC inside linebacker Quan Sturdivant and UCLA DT David Carter.
Analysis: We love Peterson's fit with the Cardinals as he should turn out to be one of the league's top cornerbacks and potentially the Cardinals' top kick returner. We also think Acho and Sturdivant will add depth to the team's linebacker corps. This DST continues to do nothing but improve, inching them closer to being worthy of a draft pick. As of now, treat them like a one-week replacement off waivers, not a weekly unit.
News: The Cardinals used the fifth overall pick in the NFL draft to select Patrick Peterson, a confident, highly regarded cornerback from LSU who says he expects to immediately assume the starting cornerback spot alongside Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. After a 5-11 season, the Cardinals have needs galore and gladly chose Peterson, considered by some to be the best player in the entire draft. "I like the way he plays physical and tough," coach Ken Whisenhunt said, "and thats an attitude we need to get better with defensively. ... When you have a chance to get a player a lot of people feel like is the best player in the draft, we have to take those opportunities."
Analysis: We love the fit as Peterson should turn out to be one of the league's top cornerbacks and potentially the Cardinals' top kick returner. He does nothing but help the unit improve, inching them closer to being worthy of a draft pick. As of now, treat them like a one-week replacement off waivers, not a weekly unit.
News: Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has returned to his Steelers connections to hire Ray Horton as defensive coordinator. Horton has coached in the NFL for 17 seasons, 11 with current Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. His specialty was with the defensive backs. He's the Cardinals' third defensive coordinator in Whisenhunt's four years in Arizona. He replaces Bill Davis, who was fired after two seasons on the job. In last year's 6-10 season, Arizona ranked 29th in total defense, 23rd in passing defense and 30th in rushing defense.
Analysis: The Cardinals were hot for LeBeau and his prized assistant Keith Butler, but neither were available -- Horton was. The Cardinals have been running a 3-4 scheme for a while, but now Horton can bring what he learned from LeBeau and attempt to mold the unit into a dominating force. There's lots of good talent on this defense but not a stud pass rusher or two. The Cardinals' division is weak but matchups against the NFC East, AFC North and Panthers and Vikings could mean some high-scoring matchups. The Cardinals DST is not a No. 1 Fantasy option and should only be claimed off waivers during the season, not before.
News: The Arizona Cardinals have fired defensive coordinator Bill Davis. The team announced the move late Thursday afternoon. Davis joined the Cardinals as linebackers coach in 2007 and became defensive coordinator in 2009. He has been an assistant coach in the NFL for 19 years. Arizona finished 5-11 this season and in last place in the NFC West. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that changes would be made after his first losing season in his four years with the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Cardinals finished 29th in total defense and 30th in scoring defense. Not a great season, but perhaps if the offense stayed on the field more than they did the defense might have had a fighting chance to succeed. The Cardinals now get a chance to rework their defense, but unless they hit a home run with hiring their new defensive coordinator, it's going to be hard to trust the Cardinals DST as much more than a No. 2 option on Draft Day next season.
News: Arizona couldn't stop San Francisco's offense in third quarter, when the 49ers scored 21 points. They allowed veteran RB Brian Westbrook and rookie RB Anthony Dixon run for a combined 100 yards. Westbrook would find the end zone twice in the third quarter on a pair of 6 yard runs. Arizona also allowed Alex Smith to throw for 276 yards and two scores. The Cardinals would sack Smith twice on the day, but fall to their division foes 38-7.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense fell one defensive touchdown shy of NFL record. Despite being one of the top scoring defenses in the league, the Cardinals had trouble containing opposing team's offense. Arizona gave up 373.6 total yards of offense each outing this year, fifth worst in the NFL. Heading into 2011, Fantasy owners should avoid the Cardinals DST on Draft Day. There are better options out there.
News: Back in Week 12 Arizona's defense allowed veteran running back Brian Westbrook to run for 136 yards and a touchdown. Westbrook filled in for the injured Frank Gore and the Cardinals couldn't contain him. Arizona was able to keep the passing game in check, but this Sunday they'll have Alex Smith, not Troy Smith under center. Neither quarterback have excelled this season, which is why the 49ers have been relying on their running game. Opposing team's DSTs average 11.3 Fantasy points per game against San Francisco.
Analysis: The Cardinals are coming off a game where they had two interceptions returned for a touchdown and had three total turnovers. Arizona may not be able to contain the opposing team's offense, but they do force turnovers and get to opposing team's quarterbacks (31 sacks on the year). With a favorable matchup in Week 17, Fantasy owners should view the Cardinals DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option against the 49ers.
News: The Cardinals DST had a monster performance on Saturday of Christmas against the Dallas Cowboys. Winning the game 27-26 on a last-second field goal, the Cardinals didn't exactly stop Dallas' offense as they allowed 382 yards. That said, the game was 14-0 Arizona without the offense having to step on the field in the first quarter. The Cardinals DST had two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the first quarter, the first time that has been done in the NFL since 1999. Antonio Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted Jon Kitna's first pass and took it to the house for a 32-yard score and that was followed by a 66-yard INT return by Greg Toler on the following drive.
Analysis: For the game, the Cardinals DST forced three turnovers, adding a fumble recovery to the mix, and managed to sack both Kitna and replacement Stephen McGee five times, including two by Darnell Dockett. The two DST touchdowns give the Cardinals an NFL-high 10 on the season. They have had several big games via the DTD and have otherwise been an unreliable unit. That is why they are still tough to recommend for Fantasy play in Week 17 at San Francisco.
News: The Cardinals DST is probably ranked higher than it is worth currently in terms of total Fantasy production. Heading into Week 16 against Dallas on Christmas, the Cardinals DST is ranked 10th in terms of Fantasy points but is also tied for first with eight special teams and defensive touchdowns. That gives them a boost where other more consistent defenses don't have one. Plus, after seven DTDs in the Cardinals first eight games, they have just one in their last six.
Analysis: Outside of doing a number on Denver in Week 14, the Cardinals DST has been a dud since early November. The team is not a winner and the unit has widely not been worth using in Fantasy play consistently. Playing the Cowboys on Saturday of Week 16, Dallas hasn't been giving up much to opposing DSTs recently. All things considered, find a better option than the Cardinals DST for use in Week 16.
News: The Cardinals DST was a low-end sleeper coming into Week 15 with their matchup against the Panthers, but Arizona allowed 19 points and 303 yards, and recorded only one turnover -- a fumble.
Analysis: Arizona got to Jimmy Clausen twice on Sunday and held the Panthers to only one touchdown, but Jon Kasay racked up four field goals and the Cardinals couldn't produce any defensive points. In Week 16, things will get tougher when the Cowboys come to town on Christmas Day, so you might want to avoid this unit in everything but very deep Fantasy formats.
News: The Cardinals take on the Panthers in Week 15, and the Arizona DST might be a nice sleeper option in deeper formats with this great matchup and the 27 points they put up in standard leagues last week vs. Denver. Arizona ranks as the ninth-best scoring unit in 2010 and have three weeks with more than 20 Fantasy points.
Analysis: The Cardinals know how to force turnovers here and there and have a habit of taking them to the house on a pretty frequent basis, so if they can get to Jimmy Clausen early and often on Sunday they could rack up the Fantasy points. With the NFC West still up for grabs, Arizona certainly has something to play for in Week 15, so think about adding their DST if you're getting good vibes here.
News: Arizona's defense held Denver to 298 yards of total offense -- 88 coming in the first quarter. After a slow start the Cardinals honed in on the ball and intercepted Kyle Orton three times. Arizona would get another turnover on a Denver reverse when Eddie Royal lost the ball straight in the air and would fumble the ball. The Cardinals would recover and get the ball on Denver's side of the field for a second straight series. The offense couldn't convert, but the defense would step up again sacking Orton at the 1-yard line and forcing the Broncos to punt. Denver committed six turnovers on the day. Rookie Daryl Washington intercepted Orton late in the game and ran 39 yards, foolishly holding the ball high in one hand as he approached the goal line. Denver's Lance Ball stripped it from behind and Arizona's Darnell Dockett recovered in the end zone for the final score. Coach Ken Whisenhunt gave Washington a tongue-lashing on the sideline.
Analysis: Arizona played inspired after the first quarter in Week 14 and got the franchise's first win against Denver. The defense stepped up and contained the once high-powered offense that was the Broncos. Arizona's DST once again had a good showing, but has been up and down this year. Looking ahead to Week 15, the Cardinals face the Panthers, a team that has struggled offensively this season. The Cardinals are an attractive option for Fantasy owners, but should be viewed as a low-end option for Week 15.
News: Arizona is 0-7-1 all-time against Denver, something the Cardinals will try to remedy in Week 14. The Cards defense will have to improve if that is going to happen. They take on an explosive offense (at times) in Denver. The Cardinals have been allowing 242.6 passing and 144.2 rushing yards per contest this season. Some of the reason for Arizona's defensive struggles could be related to DL Calais Campbell's disappointing season. It could also be because their offense has struggled all year, which keeps the defensive unit on the field more. Defenses have been getting an average of just 8.58 Fantasy points per contest against the Broncos.
Analysis: Arizona can't seem to put a complete game together. The defense has come up big at times with turnovers and touchdowns, but they don't do enough on a regular basis. They allow 28.2 points per game as well. Despite doing some good things, Arizona's DST is too inconsistent to be taken seriously on Sundays. Fantasy owners should view them as a low-end No. 2 option for Week 14.
News: The Cardinals defense allowed 19 points on 288 yards of total offense in Week 13 against the Rams. Arizona held St.Louis to 169 yards passing but were unable to stop Steven Jackson, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. The unit only allowed one touchdown on the afternoon but surrendered four field goals to Josh Brown. Arizona forced one turnover in the 19-6 loss and sacked Sam Bradford twice.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense actually played pretty well on Sunday, but failed to come up with any game-changing type plays. While the unit has been able to force some turnovers make the plays on special teams, Arizona has struggled to get teams off the field this season. Things won't get any easier for the Cardinals moving forward as the Broncos head to town in Week 14. While Denver is just 3-9 on the season, they are very explosive on offense and can put up points in a hurry. Consider Arizona a low-end Fantasy DST heading into Week 14.
News: The Cardinals defense will be looking for a bounce-back performance in Week 13 against the Rams. Arizona held the Rams to 13 points on 325 yards of offense and forced three turnovers to go along with two sacks in the team's first meeting back in Week 1. St.Louis enters Sunday's matchup ranked 26th in total offense and are averaging 19.4 points per game. The Cardinals DST is ranked 19th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 21 sacks and forced 19 turnovers this season.
Analysis: The Cardinals have really struggled on defense of late, allowing an average of 31.8 points over their last five contests. While the unit has been able to force some turnovers make the plays on special teams, Arizona has struggled to the defend the run and pass this season. The Rams enter Week 13 playing much better than they were in Week 1. Consider the Cardinals a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST on Sunday.
News: The Cardinals defense did not do a good job of slowing the 49ers down in Week 12 but they were able to make a big play on special teams. DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie came around the end to block K Shane Andrus' 37-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. Arizona was able to pick off and sack QB Troy Smith once, but allowed 386 yards of total offense in the 27-6 loss. San Francisco ran for 261 yards and two touchdowns on Monday night.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense was able to limit the 49ers through the air in Week 12, but could not stop the run at all. Even with top-RB Frank Gore missing the entire second half with a hip injury, San Francisco used two backups to rush for 261 yards. The Cardinals have been able to make some plays on special teams this season but their defense needs to improve quickly. Arizona faces off against division-foe St. Louis next week. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, the Cardinals held the Rams to 13 points and 325 yards of total offense. But despite the favorable matchup, consider the Cardinals DST as a No. 2 option for Week 13.
News: The Cardinals enter Week 12 against the 49ers ranked 32nd (last in the NFL) in net-yardage differential. They are gaining an average of 257.7 yards a game and giving up 396.8, a minus-139.1-yard differential. Arizona ranks 27th in the league against the pass and 28th against the run while San Francisco comes into Monday with the 18th best passing attack and 24th rushing. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said CB Greg Toler (foot) and DE Calais Campbell (ankle) will be game-day decisions for Week 12.
Analysis: The Cardinals have not played well on defense of late, allowing an average of 30.8 points per game in their last five contests. While they have been able to cause some turnovers and make big plays on special teams, Arizona has simply not been able to slow teams down. San Francisco is giving up an average of 11.5 Fantasy points to opposing DSTs, the sixth worst in the league. But despite the favorable matchup, consider the Cardinals DST as a low-end No. 2 option for Week 12.
News: The Cardinals DST was brutal for a second straight game in Week 11 as Kansas City defeated Arizona 31-13. The Cardinals allowed 352 yards and didn't record a sack or a turnover.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST has been smacked around by the Seahawks and the Chiefs in the last two weeks, which can't bode well for the future, although their Week 12 matchup against the 49ers is a pretty tasty one. Unless your usual unit has a very tough opponent next week however, the Cardinals DST should be dropped and avoided in most Fantasy formats after this second straight stinker.
News: In Week 11, the Cardinals visit Kansas City, and the Arizona DST might have a tough time containing the Chiefs who can beat you both on the ground or through the air. The Arizona DST does rank as the seventh-best unit in standard Fantasy leagues this season, though.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST can show up on occasion, as shown by their three weeks of 16 points or more this season, but they can also have rough outings like they did against the Seahawks last week. For this difficult matchup, you should probably avoid this unit in all formats, as the Chiefs are ranked 10th in total offense and can put up points quickly if Matt Cassel is playing well.
News: Arizona DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted Charlie Whitehurst on the Seahawks first drive of the second half as he replaced Matt Hasselbeck for a few series. The Cardinals would manage just two sacks on the day as well. Seattle compiled a total of 110 rushing and 386 passing yards against Arizona in Week 10. Arizona's secondary failed after Seattle WR Deon Butler made a catch and then was able to turn around and cut back across the field for a touchdown. That play went for 63 yards and was his third catch of the day. He had just 2 yards on his first two catches. With Darnell Dockett inactive for the first time in 104 games in Week 10, the Cards definitely missed his presence on the line. Arizona almost had a fumble recovery, but the play was challenged and ruled an incomplete pass. The Cards would fall to the Seahawks, 36-18. LaRod Stephens-Howling injured his hamstring in the first half, which obviously hurt their return game.
Analysis: Entering Week 10 Seattle had one of the worst offenses in the league. Arizona made them look good on Sunday as it seemed no one in a Cardinals uniform could make a tackle. The Cardinals will have to hope Dockett can return next week against the Chiefs. If the Cardinals can't put pressure on the quarterback it will be another long day. With bye weeks over, Fantasy owners should shy away from Arizona's DST as they are just too inconsistent to be used right now.
News: Arizona allowed Seattle to gain 302 yards of total offense back in Week 7. The Seahawks won that game 22-10 as the Cardinals couldn't get going offensively. The Cards sacked Matt Hasselbeck five times in that game, but managed just one turnover in the game. Arizona has nine interceptions and 18 sacks so far this season, so they are able to get turnovers. Another weapon they have is on special teams, where LaRod Stephens-Howling has scored two touchdowns on kickoffs. Also DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has three interceptions and a fumble recover in the team's last five meetings.
Analysis: Seattle has one of the worst offenses in the NFL, as they average 83.6 yards rushing and 177.6 passing yards per game. They had a decent day back in Week 7, but the Cardinals are entering Week 10 on a mission. "You always feel that way when you play a division game, especially after you've lost the first (meeting)," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Arizona is coming off a game where they scored two non-offensive touchdowns and now have a favorable foe up next. Fantasy owners should view the Cardinals DST as a No. 1 option for Week 10.
News: The Cardinals defense and special teams had solid performances in Week 9 against the Vikings and outscored their total offensive output. Arizona's offense accounted for a touchdown and a field goal in the 27-24 overtime loss, but the other two phases of the game were able to score twice on special teams. The first one came in the second quarter when RB LaRod Stephens-Howling took a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, his second of the year. Then on the opening kick of the second half, LB O'Brien Schofield forced a fumble on Percy Harvin with DB Michael Adams returning it 30 yards for a touchdown. The Cardinals also sacked QB Brett Favre three times and picked him off twice in the defeat.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had a dominant performance in Week 9 and scored two non-offensive touchdowns in a game for the second time this season. Stephens-Howling has become an electric kick returner and Arizona's defense has some play makers can force turnovers and create solid field position for their offense. That being said, they still allowed a game-tying drive at the end of regulation and a drive that led to the game-winning field goal in overtime. Two big performances for the Cardinals this season is nice to see but they will face off against the Seahawks next week, who scored 22 points on Arizona earlier in the year. Consider the Cardinals DST a low-end No. 1 option for Week 10.
News: The Cardinals head into their Week 9 matchup against the Vikings potentially facing QB Brett Favre and WR Percy Harvin at less than 100 percent. Arizona will also face a Randy Moss-less Minnesota after the Vikings put him on waivers earlier in the week. It can only help since Arizona has struggled on defense. The Cardinals are 27th in total defense (374.1 ypg) and 31st in scoring defense (28.3 ppg). The Vikings are averaging 331.6 yards and 18.4 points per game.
Analysis: The Cardinals have given up 60 points in their first two games after the bye. It seems the defense hasn't come off the bye yet. Arizona has been a victim of big plays in 2010. The Vikings aren't the same offensive team they were in 2009, but it's tough to lean on the Cardinals DST since they have been inconsistent for Fantasy owners in 2010. Consider the Cardinals DST at best a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: Arizona lost to Tampa Bay, 38-35, in Week 8 as they gave up some big plays on defense. The Cardinals allowed rookie RB LeGarrette Blount to rumble for 120 yards on the ground, even hurdling DB Kerry Rhodes late in the fourth quarter as he would go for 48 yards. Rhodes would also get beaten on a 53-yard pass from QB Josh Freeman to rookie WR Arrelious Benn, which led to Blount's game-winning touchdown. Arizona's defense allowed the Bucs offense to go 94 yards before the half, setting up a 21-yard field goal by Connor Barth, giving them a 24-14 lead. The Cardinals recorded two sacks, which gives them 15 on the year. Gerald Hayes, activated for the first time since offseason back surgery, returned a fumble by Blount 21 yards for the second Cardinals touchdown in a 23-second span of the final minute of the third quarter.
Analysis: The Cardinals gave up 432 total yards of offense to the Bucs in Week 8, which is not good at all. Tampa Bay entered Week 8 averaging 16.3 points and 307.5 total yards per game. The Cards have some work to do and have to do it quickly as they face Adrian Peterson and the Vikigns in Week 9. Granted the quarterback situation is rocky right now, but Peterson is much better than Blount. Fantasy owners should view the Cardinals DST as a bye-week replacement at best, but is not a recommended start for Week 9.
News: Arizona hosts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8, and the Cardinals are poised to bounce back from a disappointing Week 7 outing. The Cardinals have some leaders on defense and their coaches have faith in their abilities. Defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson said Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie may not be a devastating tackler, but he can use his physical play to counteract his opponents' tendencies to throw underneath. "Im talking about stripping the ball," Henderson said. You can come down and break a guys arm. Thatll get their attention. Rodgers-Cromartie isn't the only hard hitter on the defense as LB Joey Porter has seven career sacks in three games against Tampa Bay. The Bucs offense enter Week 8 averaging 16.3 points and 307.5 total yards per game.
Analysis: Arizona is a bit banged up on defense and may start second-year linebacker on Sunday. The Cardinals have some good leaders on defense and some young talent, but are the 27th ranked defense in the NFL. They give up 141.3 rushing and 227.3 passing yards per game -- a total of 368.7 yards. The Bucs have a young squad on offense, to the Cards could disrupt and rattle QB Josh Freeman. But in terms of Fantasy leagues, the Cardinals DST should be viewed as bye-week replacement as six teams are on byes in Week 8.
News: The Cardinals defense did a solid job of limiting the Seahawks early on in Week 7 but eventually got worn down in the 22-10 loss. Arizona forced Seattle into five field-goal attempts but also surrendered a 2-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Hasselbeck to WR Mike Williams in the second quarter. They sacked Hasselbeck five times in the game and forced one fumble but gave up 144 yards rushing. DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie blocked a field goal in the first quarter but had it called back due to an offsides penalty.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST scored two defensive touchdowns in their previous game but did not have the same success against the Seahawks in Week 7. They were able to put pressure on Hasselbeck but limiting Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett became increasingly difficult when they spent most the game on the field. Arizona has some play makers on defense that can put up some decent stats but view their DST as a No. 2 option heading into Week 8 against the Buccaneers.
News: The Cardinals defense had a stellar performance in their last game and could be in for more of the same against the Seahawks in Week 7. Arizona, who scored two defensive touchdowns against the Saints in Week 5, will go up against an offense on Sunday that ranks near the bottom of the league. Seattle has the 21st and 30th ranked passing and rushing game in the NFL, respectively, and has scored more than 30 points only once this season.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had a solid game in Week 5 but still rank 26th in the league against the pass and 29th against the run. The key to the game will be putting pressure on QB Matt Hasselbeck and trying to stop RBs Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett. Arizona has some decent talent at the skill positions but are not an advisable option for Week 7. Consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 option against the Seahawks.
News: The Cardinals defense supplied most of the scoring for Arizona in Week 5 against the Saints. They forced four turnovers and returned two for touchdowns in the 30-20 win. DB Kerry Rhodes picked up a fumble from RB Ladell Betts in the fourth quarter and returned it 27 yards for his second touchdown of the year. Then with New Orleans driving late in the game, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie picked off a pass from QB Drew Brees and took it back 28 yards to the house. LB Paris Lenon and DB Greg Toler also had interceptions and Arizona sacked Brees once in the victory.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had a stellar game against the Saints in Week 5, despite giving up 20 points and 373 yards off offense. Both of New Orleans scores game through the air, which is where Arizona picked off Brees three times. They have not been known as a solid Fantasy DST in the past but could be moving in the right direction. The Cardinals have a bye week coming up but will face off against the Seahawks in Week 7. Keep an eye on the Cardinals DST over the next few weeks before starting them in most leagues.
News: The Cardinals DST has given up the second most points in the NFL (118), giving up 29.5 points per game. Several players spoke out about the defensive woes on Thursday. "That's exactly what our problems are. Everybody's so eager that they try to do more than their job," DE Calais Campbell said. "If we go out there and do our job, make the plays that we're supposed to, we'll do just fine." In addition to the points, Arizona ranks 30th in rush defense giving up 154.8 yards per game. "We've got to get better," LB Joey Porter said. "To stop the run is a want-to attitude. It's all 11 guys wanting to tackle and wanting to get a guy on the ground. That's all it is." It doesn't get much easier for the Cardinals in Week 5 with the New Orleans Saints coming to town. The Saints have yet to show Super Bowl form in 2010, but still stand with a 3-1 record with an offense ranked 12th overall.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense lost Karlos Dansby and Antrell Rolle to free agency in the offseason and it is beginning to show. Rolle has been replaced by Kerry Rhodes, who has played fairly well. However, Dansby's leadership is clearly missing, as are the amount of turnovers the Cardinals create. Still, the most stunning stat about the defense goes back to points. Arizona has been responsible for two of the three offenses in the NFL that have reached 40 points in one game (Atlanta in Week 2, San Diego in Week 4). The only positive to come from he DST this season is LaRod Stephens-Howling, who returned a kickoff for a TD in Week 3. Avoid using Arizona in Fantasy in Week 5 and even the following weeks unless they turn things around completely.
News: The Cardinals DST came into the Week 4 game at San Diego ranked near the bottom of the NFL in total defense. Their performance in the 41-10 loss did not improve that ranking, as the Chargers racked up 428 yards of total offense, with 239 coming in the passing game. QB Philip Rivers only threw 20 passes, but scored TDs on two of them (both to Antonio Gates). Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews each scored a rushing TD and combined for 155 yards rushing. Coach Ken Whisenhunt tried to emphasize a defensive improvement coming into this season."That was something we talked about improving from last season. As I stand here four games into this season I can't say that we have," Whisenhunt said. Arizona did manage to create a Darren Sproles fumble forced by Greg Toler, recovered by Kerry Rhodes who took it 42 yards for a touchdown. It was the Cardinals only TD of the day.
Analysis: The defense got gashed in the air and on the ground by the explosive Chargers offense. Gates two TDs were both scored while the Cardinals were in man coverage. Both Ardian Wilson and Paris Lenon were beat by Gates for the scores. In the running game,Tolbert and Mathews enjoyed glaring holes that sprung the RBs to the second level before defender's first contact. The Cardinals DST will try to regroup in Week 5 against the Saints, who put up 383 yards of offense and 16 points against the Panthers in Week 4. Consider the Cardinals DST a low-end Fantasy option after this abysmal performance.
News: The Cardinals DST faces their toughest test of the early 2010 season Week 4 at San Diego. Chargers QB Philip Rivers is leading the NFL with 1,087 yards in just three games, with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. The gaudy numbers can be attributed to the Chargers finding themselves in early deficits against the Chiefs in Week 1 and against the Seahawks in Week 3. As always, Rivers is relying on TE Antonio Gates (242 yards receiving, four TDs).
Analysis: The passing game is not the only concern for the Cardinals. They rank second to last in rush yards allowed per game at 146.3. That could play into the Chargers plans with rookie RB Ryan Mathews expected to return from his high ankle sprain that sidelined him in Week 3. The Cardinals DST has a lot of work ahead of them, but the Chargers are preparing for their special teams and return man LaRod Stephens-Howling just as diligently. He returned a kickoff for a TD against the Raiders in Week 3 and the Chargers gave up two kick return TDs to Seattle RB Leon Washington, both in the second half of the Week 3 loss to the Seahawks. We hang our hat on special teams, said Cardinals S and key special teamer Rashad Johnson. We are doing a good job in practice, and we know thats an area we need to win." Consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 Fantasy option in Week 4.
News: The Cardinals DST wasn't great in Week 3 against the Raiders, but made just enough plays to help secure a 24-23 win. Arizona's defense surrendered 367 yards of total offense while forcing a turnover and recording three sacks. They also forced the Raiders to miss three field goals, including the game-winning 32-yard attempt. The Cardinals also scored a touchdown on special teams when LaRod Stephens-Howling took the opening kickoff 102 yards for a score.
Analysis: Arizona's defense has not been good this season and that trend continued Sunday. While they made enough plays to help secure the victory, the unit still allowed 23 points and 133 yards rushing. Things might not get any easier for the Cardinals DST moving forward as they face the high-powered Chargers in Week 4. Consider them a low-end No. 2 DST at best against San Diego.
News: The Cardinals defense is looking forward to a Week 3 matchup against the Raiders, trying to put an atrocious performance against the Falcons in Week 2 in their rearview mirror. The Cardinals have another tough challenge ahead in Oakland after the Raiders rushed for 173 yards in Week 2. "We feel like the defensive line is the strength of our team, but we definitely have a big challenge ahead of us, especially after how poorly we just played," DL Calais Campbell said.
Analysis: Arizona has been awful to start the season, allowing 384.5 yards and 27.0 points per game. Usually facing the Raiders has been a matchup opposing teams have circled on the calendar, but Oakland is ninth in total offense (345.0 ypg) heading into Week 3. Use the Cardinals DST at your own risk. The Raiders announced Wednesday that QB Bruce Gradkowski will be under center Sunday.
News: The Cardinals DST was atrocious in Week 2, yielding three touchdowns to Matt Ryan and allowing Falcons backup RB Jason Snelling to grind out 129 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns on the ground. The Falcons totaled 444 yards on the Cardinals defense. DT Darnell Dockett talked with a number of defensive starters individually following Arizona's loss. "I was just telling guys to keep a positive attitude," he said. "Don't let your head hang down. We've been in tough situations before. We'll bounce back."
Analysis: The Cardinals should get that chance to bounce back in Week 3 when the Raiders come to the desert. Oakland's offense is improved from years past but they should still suffer some turnovers. If you're looking for a DST off waivers before next week's action, check out the Cardinals.
News: The Cardinals had a good defensive matchup last week at St. Louis, but this week is a different ball of wax. Arizona will cross the country and play at Atlanta in Week 2, a matchup that will feature Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White. The Cards did a great job last week wrapping up Steven Jackson (88 yards on 21 carries, 6 yards on four catches), but he might have been easy to focus on given the state of the Rams' passing game. The Cardinals can't make the same mistake this week against Ryan & Co., and there's even room for pessimism given that rookie QB Sam Bradford thre for over 250 yards with a touchdown in his first game ever. Though to be fair, the Cardinals' secondary picked him off three times.
Analysis: If you play the matchups, signs point to the Cardinals DST being a disappointment in Week 2. Consider other options before going with them at the Falcons.
News: The Cardinals defense had a solid performance against the Rams in Week 1, holding the opposition to just 13 points and 325 yards of total offense. They intercepted rookie QB Sam Bradford three times, two by Adrian Wilson, and blocked a field goal. Arizona also collected two sacks and forced a fumble in the win.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense, which gave up 45 points in each of last season's playoff games, held a Rams offense off the board expect for a couple of field goals and a 1-yard TD pass. Arizona showed the blitz a lot and and put pressure on Bradford throughout the game. They will have a tougher challenge in Week 2 against the Falcons so Fantasy owners should continue to view the Cardinals as a No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Cardinals start the 2010 season with Week 1 against the Rams, who only mustered 23 points in two games with Arizona last season. The Cardinals ranked No. 17 in the league last season against the run, which will be St. Louis strong point. The Cardinals return Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell from their front seven and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Adrian Wilson in their secondary. Also, they will be facing a rookie signal caller in Sam Bradford. The Cardinals defense will have to make up for the losses of linebacker Karlos Dansby and Pro Bowl defensive back Antrel Rolle to free agency.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense, which gave up 45 points in each of last season's playoff games, held the opposition to just 20.3 points per game last season, which was good enough for 14th in the NFL. They lost Dansby and Rolle but added a veteran pass rusher in Joey Porter and drafted Daryl Washington from TCU, which should help them put more pressure on the quarterback. The Rams are in a rebuilding process so expect the Cardinals to limit the scoring, like they did last season. Fantasy owners should look for Arizona to be aggressive against Bradford and consider them a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 1.
News: In a dress rehearsal for the regular season, the Cardinals defense came to play during Saturday's 14-9 preseason win against the Bears. Arizona held Chicago to 292 total yards, including 82 rushing yards. Chicago went 5 for 12 on third downs and Arizona picked off starting QB Jay Cutler twice. Arizona is allowing 338.0 yards per game in the preseason, but are a surprising ninth in scoring defense (16.3 ppg). Opponents have just five touchdowns against Arizona in the preseason.
Analysis: While the Arizona offense was getting much of the attention in 2009, the Cardinals defense held the opposition to just 20.3 points per game, which was good enough for 14th in the NFL. The defense might need to be even better in 2010 since the Cardinals are in a transition year on offense, losing both QB Kurt Warner and WR Anquan Boldin. The Cardinals defense has some good players in Darnell Dockett, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Adrian Wilson, but they do need to make up for the losses of Antrel Rolle and Karlos Dansby. The Cardinals DST is at best a No. 2 option on Draft Day.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Cardinals starting LB Gerald Hayes underwent back surgery this summer and is not expected to practice when training camp begins next week, coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Hayes, a starter for the past four seasons, has been troubled by a bulging disc since last season. He missed most of the team's offseason workouts but thought he could avoid surgery. Whisenhunt said Hayes underwent a procedure on his back several weeks ago and will be evaluated next week when players take physicals before reporting to camp July 30. "We'll determine then what his rehab protocol is," Whisenhunt said. Hayes' ongoing problems are troubling to the Cardinals, who are thin at the two inside linebacker positions. Karlos Dansby departed via free agency this offseason. Paris Lenon is the starter now at Dansby's spot, although he will be challenged by Daryl Washington, the team's second-round pick. Reggie Walker and Monty Beisel are the top players behind Hayes.
Analysis: The Cardinals are already missing Dansby and also lost CB Antrelle Rolle this offseason to the Giants. Hayes needs to be healthy to help this defense, but the Cardinals DST should be considered a No. 2 option in 2010. They are not worth drafting in the majority of leagues this season.
News: The Cardinals DST, which drafted DT Dan Williams in the first round, went after defense again in the second round of the NFL Draft with LB Daryl Washington from TCU. Washington is expected to replace the departed Karlos Dansby at inside linebacker after Dansby signed with Miami as a free agent. The Cardinals later added LB O'Brien Schofield in Round 4 and CB Jorrick Calvin in Round 6. Schofield is more of a project since he tore his ACL at the Senior Bowl.
Analysis: The addition of Williams and Washington helps fill two needs for the Cardinals on defense. Still, your best bet is to consider the Cardinals DST a top-end No. 2 option, worthy of a draft pick in the deepest of leagues and also worthy of being added off waivers as a one-week replacement. But these two moves definitely improved their value heading into the season.
News: Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he sweated through the handful of picks ahead of Arizona's wondering if beefy Tennessee DT Dan Williams would fall to the Cardinals. He did, and Arizona was able to fill one of its primary defensive needs with a player Whisenhunt said the Cardinals had at No. 11 overall on their board. "I think going into the draft today the idea of Dan Williams being available at our pick was something we hoped for but not something we realistically thought was going to happen," Whisenhunt said. Williams played in a 4-3 defense as a senior, but the 6-foot-3, 327-pound lineman will shift to nose tackle in Arizona's 3-4 alignment. The team needed defensive help at several positions, and nose tackle was certainly one of them. Last year's starter, Bryan Robinson, was not re-signed and Alan Branch was shifted to defensive end. That left Gabe Watson the only nose tackle on the roster.
Analysis: Williams started all 13 games for the Volunteers last season with 70 tackles, 36 solos. Williams could start alongside Pro Bowler Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell on the Cardinals' defensive line. Williams should improve the Cardinals DST, but he has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues. The Cardinals DST, which lost Karlos Dansby and Antrel Rolle, could use some help, and Williams is a good start. Still, your best bet is to consider the Cardinals DST a top-end No. 2 option, worthy of a draft pick in the deepest of leagues and also worthy of being added off waivers as a one-week replacement.
News: Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter agreed to a three-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday. Porter, entering his 12th season, spent the past three with the Miami Dolphins, who released him in March. He played the first eight years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Porter said the familiarity with the coaches was a big reason he was considering Arizona. He also wanted to be relatively near his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif. "I was looking to play for a West Coast team and I know everything Whiz is about," Porter said at the time. "He had me over there in Pittsburgh for eight years so I don't have to be blindsided by some new coaches and trying to wonder how I fit. I know exactly how I fit. I know how he would try and use me if I was here and I am just trying to be a piece to the puzzle that's already there."
Analysis: Arizona has also added free safety Kerry Rhodes, so they've done a diligent job of replacing their high-priced starters that have left (that would be safety Antrel Rolle and linebacker Karlos Dansby). Your best bet is to consider the Cardinals DST a top-end No. 2 option, worthy of a draft pick in the deepest of leagues and also worthy of being added off waivers as a one-week replacement, especially when they have a division matchup.
News: The Cardinals acquired safety Kerry Rhodes from the New York Jets on Saturday for a fourth-round pick in this year's draft and a seventh-rounder in 2011. Rhodes is expected to move into the starting spot opposite All-Pro Adrian Wilson that was vacated when Antrel Rolle, a Pro Bowl selection last season, signed as a free agent with the New York Giants on Friday - the day after he was released by Arizona.
Analysis: Rhodes is a solid replacement for Rolle -- he might even prove to be less of a detriment than Rolle. The Cardinals DST has lost some pieces this offseason: LB Karlos Dansby is with the Dolphins and Rolle has moved east, but if they can replace Dansby they'll be in pretty good shape. They're a borderline No. 1 Fantasy DST that is definitely worth a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: The Cardinals announced the release of safety Antrel Rolle prior to the start of free agency, but the team reportedly would like to keep him on the roster. He was due a $4 million bonus that the team didn't want to pay him. Rolle is now a free agent.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST might look different after this season: Not only is Rolle a goner but Karlos Dansby is another defender who might shake loose. As it stands now, the Cards' defensive unit is solid and their special teams has some real upside. But if they lose some key playmakers they could struggle.
News: The official team Web site of the Cardinals predicts that safety Antrel Rolle won't be back with the team in 2010. Rolle and the Cards have reportedly talked about an extension, but with a $4 million bonus due soon, the expectation is that the Cardinals will pass on paying it and let him explore free agency.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST might look different after this season: Not only is Rolle likely to be a free agent but Karlos Dansby is another defender who might shake loose. As it stands now, the Cards' defensive unit is solid and their special teams has some real upside. But if they lose some key playmakers they could struggle.
News: With nothing to gain in Week 17, the Cardinals chose to rest many of their starters against the Packers as they gear up for the playoffs. It showed up on the field as Green Bay routed Arizona, 33-7. Before the game, Arizona decided to bench Bertrand Berry and Antrel Rolle. Then early in the game, they lost cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to a bruised left knee. Green Bay took advantage of the short-handed Cardinals. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers played most of the game and completed 21 of 26 passes for 235 yards. The Packers finished with 345 yards. The Cardinals got only one sack and one turnover.
Analysis: We are a little surprised that Green Bay chose to use a lot of their key players late into the game in Week 17 when they had nothing to gain as well except momentum. It just stinks for Fantasy owners that started the Cardinals DST thinking Arizona would face a ton of reserves. The Cardinals defense struggled down the stretch and allowed 20 or more points in three of their last four games. Arizona was still a top 10 scoring defense heading into the final week of the season despite allowing 346.5 yards per game. The Cardinals DST was definitely a Fantasy unit you started based on the matchup. They are going to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST on Draft Day 2010.
News: The Arizona Cardinals were dominant against the lowly Rams in Week 16 as they won 31-10. The Cardinals DST limited the Rams to 238 total yards of offense. The Cardinals DST managed four sacks of QB Keith Null and picked him off three times as well. Add one lost fumble by the Rams and the Cardinals forced four turnovers and matched that number in sacks.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST struggled against the Lions in Week 15 but was much better this week. They must play the Packers in Week 17, however, and that is going to be tough on their defense. The Cardinals DST can normally be considered a No. 1 unit but against the Packers in the final week of the season but be worth a little less.
News: In the Cardinals' Week 15 win at the Lions, the DST totaled two sacks and two interceptions while the Lions scored 24 points.
Analysis: Much more was expected out of the Cardinals defense, which held a 17-0 lead on the Lions at halftime. We expect them to do well next week vs. the Rams, but we had high hopes this week. Consider them a No. 1 DST for Week 16 nonetheless.
News: It was not a good night for the Arizona Cardinals overall on Monday of Week 14 in San Francisco. The 49ers blasted them from start to finish as they scored 24 points off turnovers to win the game 24-9. The Cardinals DST allowed San Francisco 327 total yards. Most of the passing yards they allowed came in the first half and then Frank Gore and company ripped them up on the ground in the second. The Cardinals DST did pick off QB Alex Smith twice in the game but could only sack him once. They did not force any fumbles, either.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST gave up points and yards to the 49ers on Monday night and they didn't do much in the way of sacks or turnovers, either. We figured they'd be a lot better than they showed on the big Monday night stage. The Cardinals play at Detroit in Week 15 and that is a much better matchup. We still like the Cardinals DST as a low-end No. 1 unit in that game because, let's face it, the Lions are terrible.
News: In the Cardinals' Week 13 win at home vs. the Vikings, the DST contributed three sacks and two interceptions. They held Brett Favre to 275 yards passing, and even more impressively kept Adrian Peterson to 19 rush yards on 13 carries.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST should be a decent waiver-wire option to use in Week 14 at San Francisco. Consider them if you need a DST.
News: At Tennessee in Week 12, the Cardinals somehow managed to give up only 20 points even though they allowed 532 yards. They recorded four sacks and recovered one fumble.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST can be good in the right matchups, but it has a tough one Week 13 against the Vikings. It'll be lucky to give up just 20 points then. Consider looking into other options.
News: The Cardinals didn't have an overwhelming defensive performance at St. Louis in Week 11, but they didn't have a bad one either. They allowed 13 points on 314 yards, recording two sacks and one interception.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST entered with 17 sacks in its last five games, so against a poor offensive team like the Rams, you had to expect more from it. Still, it gave you good enough numbers for you to keep it active for another good matchup at Tennessee in Week 12.
News: Playing without defensive starters Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor due to injury in Week 10, the Cardinals made a strong second-half stand in a 31-20 comeback win against the Seahawks. After falling behind 17-10 at the half, the Cardinals held Seattle to a field goal in the second half. Seattle did rack up 472 yards, but Arizona had two interceptions, including one late in the game with the Seahawks inside the 5-yard line. Arizona also had four sacks.
Analysis: The Cardinals haven't put forth a bad defensive effort in 2009, but they have been a bit unpredictable at times. It will help their cause once they get back to 100 percent, so consider the Cardinals DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 11 against the Rams.
News: Cardinals starting linebackers Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor are doubtful for Sunday's game against NFC West foe Seattle. Neither has practiced this week because of back injuries. Hayes would miss his second straight game. Ali Highsmith started in place of Hayes at inside linebacker last week. Bertrand Berry is Okeafor's backup at outside linebacker.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST remains a solid option for Week 10 against the Seahawks because Seattle's offensive line is a huge question mark. Check to see if they're available on waivers in your league.
News: The Cardinals DST totaled four sacks and an interception of Jay Cutler at Chicago in Week 9. Cutler did throw for 369 yards in the loss but the Arizona run defense rebounded to limit the Bears to 70 rush yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is worth a look in Week 10 when the Seahawks come to the desert. Start them as a low-end starting option if you get the chance.
News: Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett sat out Arizona's practice on Wednesday but expects to play in the Cardinals' game Sunday at Chicago. Dockett has been bothered by a sore ankle and neck. Linebacker Gerald Hayes also didn't practice Wednesday because of back spasms.
Analysis: Dockett says the only way he would sit out the game is if he can't walk. Hayes should also make the game. We'll keep you posted on this, but it's safe to consider the Cardinals DST a low-end starting option in deeper Fantasy leagues when they play the Bears in Week 9.
News: Coming off two good defensive performances, the Cardinals took an unexpected step back Week 8 against the Panthers, allowing 31 points on 355 yards, including 270 on the ground. They recorded just one sack with no interceptions or fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST still has its uses in Fantasy, but it showed with this performance why you still can't trust it on an every-week basis. It has some playmakers, but it has some shortcomings too. You should probably look for better options Week 9 at Chicago, but if you have to start it, at least you can take some comfort in knowing the Cardinals DST should perform better than it did this week.
News: The Cardinals DST, which held Seattle to just three points in Week 6, had another outstanding game Sunday at the Giants. While the defense gave up 17 points, the Cardinals had three interceptions, recovered a fumble and recorded three sacks. LaRod Stephens-Howling had four kickoff returns for 86 yards, and Steve Breaston had one punt return for 1 yard.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is turning into a great Fantasy unit and should be considered a No. 1 option in Week 8 at home against Carolina. With Jake Delhomme turnover prone, the Cardinals DST should produce another solid outing.
News: Arizona's swarming defense held Seattle, which romped 41-0 over Jacksonville in Week 5, to 128 yards and its fewest points in a home game since 2002 during a 27-3 win in Week 6. Seattle's bumbling day was epitomized early in the fourth quarter. As thousands began pouring out of the quiet stadium that used to provide the league's loudest home-field advantage, tight end John Carlson stumbled off the line and then had a pass from Matt Hasselbeck clang off his helmet. Hasselbeck, who threw for four touchdown passes in his return from broken ribs last week, completed just 10 of 29 throws for 112 yards. The 34 percent completion rate was Hasselbeck's lowest since 2004, also in a loss to Arizona. He was sacked five times behind an offensive line containing a third-string left guard and fourth-string left tackle because it was missing three injured starters. Arizona had one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals have been a tough team to read at times in 2009. They came into Week 6 as the league's best rush defense, but they were also the NFL's worst pass defense. They pretty much gave a team effort against Seattle and the Cardinals DST was able to put up some major Fantasy points. We basically have to treat the Cardinals DST as a week-to-week candidate until Arizona gives more consistent effort. Consider the Arizona DST a risky Fantasy option in Week 7 against the Giants.
News: The Cardinals didn't have a stellar defensive performance against the Texans in Week 5, but they did get a touchdown on an interception by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Cardinals allowed 21 points on 416 yards.
Analysis: Other than the interception, the Cardinals DST didn't get any big plays. It's a useful unit in Fantasy, but only in the right matchups. At Seattle in Week 6, it might continue to struggle, so go with other options if you can find them.
News: The Cardinals DST did nothing against the Colts on Sunday. Antrel Rolle had an interception, but that was it in terms of sacks or turnovers. The Cardinals also allowed 31 points and 505 yards. Steve Breaston had three punt returns for 12.9 yards and LaRon Stephens-Howling had four kickoff returns for 78 yards.
Analysis: You had to expect the Cardinals would be in trouble against the Colts, but that was ridiculous. Arizona has a bye in Week 4, and the Cardinals DST could also struggle in Week 5 against Houston. You might want to consider options for the next two weeks.
News: Arizona defeated the Jaguars 31-17 in Week 2's game at Jacksonville. The Cardinals DST allowed the Jaguars 372 total yards but many of those came late in the game after the Cardinals had lifted several regulars with the game out of hand. Arizona managed to reach QB David Garrard for 4 sacks in the game and they also picked him off once as Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie stepped in front of a Garrard pass. Jacksonville also lost two fumbles in the game and committed a total of 3 turnovers and 4 sacks. Arizona's biggest defensive play came when Antrel Rolle returned a blocked field goal 83 yards for a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had a fantastic game with 4 sacks, 3 turnovers, a blocked field goal and a defensive touchdown. You can't have much more of a complete defensive game unless they also shut the Jaguars out. The Cardinals DST was a useful matchups type last season but may be even better in 2009 after two weeks. They face a solid offense at home against the Colts in Week 3 so continue to think of them as a No. 2 Fantasy DST option. They definitely have sleeper potential.
News: The Cardinals defense held the visiting 49ers to only 203 yards in the season opener Sunday, but it gave up 20 points. The Cardinals also had three sacks and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST was a useful matchups type last season, and it showed why in the opening week. It doesn't often get big plays, which makes it a vanilla option Week 2 at Jacksonville, but you could do worse.
News: The Arizona Cardinals can score. Everybody knows that. The defensive prowess, though, is another matter. Coach Ken Whisenhunt's dissatisfaction with the team's penchant for giving up big plays and way too many points led to the firing of defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast after the team's run to the Super Bowl. "We gave up more touchdown passes than anybody in the league," Whisenhunt said. "If you look at our season last year there were some games where we played very well defensively and there were other games where we gave up 56 points and 47 points." New coordinator Bill Davis, promoted from linebackers coach, is making a few schematic changes in training camp, but the main emphasis is on consistency and attention to detail. "It's going to be an aggressive style, attacking. They're going to have to adjust to us," Davis said. "There's a lot of similarities and there's some subtle changes. Hopefully what (the fans) will notice is the points on the scoreboard at the end of the game is down."
Analysis: The Cardinals ranked 28th, out of 32 teams, in points allowed during the 2008 regular season at 26.6 per game. Only Kansas City, Denver, St. Louis and Detroit were worse. Arizona's 36 passing touchdowns allowed were nine more than any other team in the NFL. Those stats clearly need to be addressed and we think they will definitely be an improved unit in 2009. They're worth a late-round pick in deeper drafts as a sleeper option as they could surprise this season.
News: The Cardinals took care of their top offseason priority on Thursday by signing two-time Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson to a new five-year, $39 million contract, with $18.5 million guaranteed. The deal puts Wilson under contract through the 2013 season. Wilson is the hard-hitting leader of the Cardinals' defense and was a Pro Bowl selection in the 2006 and 2008 seasons. Wilson has been with the Cardinals longer than any other player on their roster, experiencing some rough years of losing before the team's unexpected run to the Super Bowl last season.
Analysis: Wilson would have been in a contract year had he not signed an extension. He's a heady player who will keep the Cardinals defense effective. The Cardinals have added some nice pieces in free agency, including the addition of CB Bryant McFadden from Pittsburgh. Make no mistake, they have a good return game to go with a feisty defense that includes studs like LB Karlos Dansby, who has signed his franchise tender, and up-and-coming CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. They're worth a late-round pick in deeper drafts as a sleeper option.
News: Defensive end Bertrand Berry has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals, keeping the veteran with the NFC Champs. Berry rejoins the Cardinals after playing 14 regular-season games and getting a team-high five sacks to go along with 31 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 2008. Berry played all four of the Cardinals postseason games. He started three of them and had two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals have added some nice pieces in free agency, including this re-signing and the addition of CB Bryant McFadden from Pittsburgh. We still feel as if they need to add another nice defender to their defensive line before they re-emerge as a worthwhile DST. But make no mistake, they have a good return game to go with a feisty defense that includes studs like LB Karlos Dansby, who has signed his franchise tender, and up-and-coming CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. They're worth a late-round pick in deeper drafts as a sleeper option.
News: On the defensive side of the ball for the Cardinals, linebackers coach Bill Davis has been promoted to defensive coordinator replacing the fired Clancy Pendergast. Davis was a candidate to be the defensive coordinator in Kansas City, where ex-Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley was hired as the head coach. Davis previously ran the 49ers defense in 2005-06 and has also worked with the Giants and Falcons' linebackers. "There are some things we have done well defensively that we will continue with," coach Ken Whisenhunt told the official team Web site. "But there are some (new) principles we will incorporate that are similar to a 3-4 concept. We will still be the same type of hybrid defense. We will have the ability to do both things, which will hopefully make us more difficult to play against."
Analysis: This is another sign that the Cardinals are going to be more 3-4 schematic than 4-3, which should help them. The Cardinals DST had some bright spots in 2008, finishing just outside the Top 12 at the position in standard-scoring leagues. In total, they had 31 sacks and 13 interceptions, modest totals, but had a whopping six total touchdowns and an NFL-best 17 fumble recoveries. They could use some help on defense, notably against the pass as they were scored on through the air more than anyone in the NFL. Consider them a No. 2 Fantasy DST that likely will go undrafted this summer but well worth using off the waiver wire as a one-week replacement.
News: The Cardinals fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast on Saturday, less than a week after Arizona played Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl. Pendergast was hired by Dennis Green in 2004 and stayed on when Whisenhunt took over in 2007. The Cardinals ranked 19th in the NFL in overall defense in the regular season, giving up 331.5 yards per game. They were 22nd in pass defense and 16th against the run. Pendergast was known for using a variety of blitz and coverage schemes aimed at taking advantage of the Cardinals' speed. "He was one of the guys retained from the previous staff and has done a good job," Whisenhunt said. "But as part of the evaluation process that's done after every season, I took a look at the last two years as a whole and felt this move was necessary to help us continue the progress we've made. ... In terms of filling the position, we have some people in mind both internally and externally and will begin that process immediately."
Analysis: There are rumblings that the Cardinals will evolve into a 3-4 defense this offseason, and the job search been linked to a couple of linebacker coaches around the league already.
News: In the Cardinals' 27-23 loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII, the DST totaled an interception off a tipped Ben Roethlisberger pass and two sacks. The unit played better as the game wore on but couldn't close in fast enough on a 6-yard Roethlisberger pass for Santonio Holmes on the right edge of the end zone that became the Steelers' game-winning score.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had some bright spots in 2008, finishing just outside the top 12 at the position in standard-scoring leagues.
News: The Cardinals DST was staked a 24-6 lead at halftime, but saw that lead fizzle away to 25-24 in Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Eagles on Sunday. QB Donovan McNadd tore the Cardinals' secondary apart, throwing for 375 yards on 28-of-47 passing and three touchdowns with an interception. The Cardinals' run defense limited the Eagles to 97 yards on the ground.
Analysis: The Cardinals aren't going to the Super Bowl thanks to their defense. They have been a serviceable unit but not one of the best in the league. They have given up some big point totals this season, but have done enough in the postseason to advance. They are a second-rate unit in 2009 Fantasy leauges.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw a career-high five interceptions in Saturday's Divisional playoff game to five different Arizona defenders. The Panthers accrued only 205 yards through the air and 75 yards on the ground, allowing the Panthers to score only 13 points.
Analysis: The Cardinals' defense wasn't one of the better units in the playoffs by quite a bit, but they had what will likely be the best performance of any defense this postseason. Don't expect them to get five interceptions in the NFC Championship game however.
News: Even though Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan had little trouble against some of the league's best defenses during the regular season, the Cardinals found a way to stop him in Saturday's Wild Card playoff game at Arizona. They allowed 24 points on only 250 yards, recording three sacks and two interceptions. One of the sacks (Antonio Smith) led to a safety. Antrel Rolle also recovered a fumble and returned it 27 yards for a score.
Analysis: The Cardinals made the playoffs this season, but it had to do a lot more with their offense than it did their defense. They aren't particularly strong against the run or the pass and don't record many sacks or turnovers -- at least not usually. Continue to think of the Cardinals DST as a low-end option in Fantasy playoff formats.
News: The Cardinals allowed 330 yards of total offense and 21 points in Week 17 against Seattle. They forced three turnovers in the game (two interceptions and a fumble) and had one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Cardinals made the playoffs this season, but it had to do a lot more with their offense than it did their defense. They aren't particularly strong against the run or the pass and don't record many sacks or turnovers. View them as a low-end option in Fantasy playoff formats for their matchup against Atlanta in their first round playoff game.
News: The Cardinals DST had one sack and no turnovers Sunday at New England. Karlos Dansby had the sack. Steve Breaston had nine kickoff returns for 141.3 yards, and Sean Morey had one kickoff return for 15 yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST will bounce back in Week 17 against Seattle. Consider the unit a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Cardinals allowed 396 yards of total offense and 35 points in Week 15 against Minnesota. Roderick Hood returned a field goal 68 yards for a touchdown and they forced one turnover in the game. Three different players each had one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense was beaten by Tarvaris Jackson early in the game through the air and by Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor on the ground. The Cardinals have three touchdown returns combined over their last two games, but remain a risky option for Week 15 on the road against a tough Patriots offense.
News: The Cardinals DST had both a fumble recovery and interception return for a touchdown against the Rams in Week 14. They had another fumble recovery in the game. The squad allowed the Rams to gain 308 yards and allowed 10 points.
Analysis: When the Cardinals play an easy opponent, like those in their division, they look good. In Week 15 they'll play the Vikings who could be without starting QB Gus Frerotte who is listed as questionable for the game as he came out of Week 14's game with a back injury. If Tarvaris Jackson is the QB instead of Frerotte, that would make the Cards a more attractive Fantasy option. Monitor Frerotte's progress before making a decision o starting the Cards' DST.
News: The Cardinals defense, which allowed 37 points to the Giants in Week 12, had an even worse performance in Week 13, allowing 48 points on 437 yards. It did record a sack, though.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST looked like a solid Fantasy unit when it had a string of favorable matchups, but it has revealed its true form with its performance recently. Fortunately, the Cardinals host the hapless Rams in Week 14, so get their DST active.
News: The Cardinals DST gave up 37 points and 321 yards to the Giants in a Week 12 loss. They only made one sack and did not force a turnover.
Analysis: As a defensive unit, the Cardinals have alternated good and bad weeks this season and were due for a down game in Week 12. In Week 13, Arizona play at the Eagles, who are dealing with a bit of offensive turmoil right now. The Cardinals could be catching them at a perfect time, so consider them a nice sleeper option for the upcoming period in deeper leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange notes that Cardinals CB Roderick Hood aggravated a rib injury and is due to undergo more testing this week.
Analysis: Hood is the Cardinals best cover cornerback and his absence would be felt by the Cardinals DST. Arizona plays the N.Y. Giants Week 12 anyway, so it might not be an ideal time to start the Cardinals DST.
News: The Cardinals defense might have allowed Seattle to rack up 13 fourth-quarter points, but an interception by rookie Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with 2:29 left sealed the 26-20 win Week 11 against the Seahawks. Arizona held Seattle to 196 yards, including 153 through the air in Matt Hasselbeck's first game back from a knee injury. Arizona got two sacks, three interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Arizona defense stepped up Week 11, but it was expected going against one of the weaker offensive teams in the NFL. Still, the Cardinals haven't been that bad of a defensive team in 2008. They have the made Cardinals DST a viable Fantasy option when the matchup appears favorable. Arizona plays the N.Y. Giants Week 12, so it might not be an ideal time to start the Cardinals DST.
News: The Cardinals stopped Michael Robinson up the middle from the 2-yard line as the game ended Monday night to preserve a 29-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10. The NFC West-leading Cardinals (6-3) never led until Karlos Dansby's 34-yard interception return set up Warner's 5-yard TD pass to Anquan Boldin with 4:16 to play. Adrian Wilson had another key interception on a third-down play on the second-to-last drive to help Arizona win. The Cardinals came up with no sacks while allowing 336 yards, including 119 on the ground. Arizona also had a fumble recovery in the game.
Analysis: It would have been a real special night for the Cardinals defense had an interception return for a touchdown by Antrel Rolle in the fourth quarter stood, but it was negated by an offside call. The Arizona defense has been pretty good in 2008 and that has turned the Cardinals DST into a viable Fantasy option. It appears Week 11 against the Seahawks is a perfect time to start the Cardinals DST, but just keep in mind Matt Hasselbeck will be back under center for Seattle after missing a few games with knee/back problems.
News: The Cardinals DST held the Rams to 13 points and 231 yards in a Week 9 victory. They also recorded two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST has had a few big weeks this season, and this is the latest one. In Week 10, they will take on a 49ers team they dominated in a 23-13 Week 1 victory. You should probably consider them a nice middle-of-the-road No. 1 option with that favorable matchup.
News: The Cardinals DST didn't do much Sunday at Carolina. The Cardinals DST had one sack, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles in a 27-23 loss. J.J. Arrington had four kickoff returns for 87.2 yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is a low-end Fantasy option and should only be used in Week 9 at St. Louis if your starters are on a bye.
News: The Cardinals DST isn't worth using in Fantasy play this week when they fly across the country to take on a solid Panthers offense in Carolina. QB Jake Delhomme has thrown two touchdowns in three of his last four games and the Panthers running backs have totaled five touchdowns in their last three games.
Analysis: Consider other options before starting the Cardinals DST in Week 8. Sleeper options like the Jets and 49ers are more appealing at this point.
News: The Cardinals limited the Cowboys just enough to win Week 6 at Arizona, giving up 24 points on 374 yards. They recorded three sacks and recovered a fumble and even scored two touchdowns on special teams. J.J. Arrington returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a score, and Monty Beisel returned a block punt for a touchdown in overtime.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had an awful game against the Jets a few weeks ago, but it has looked pretty good otherwise. Think of it as a nice bye-week replacement when it has the right matchups. Unfortunately, the Cardinals have a bye week themselves Week 7, so don't bother them until Week 8 at Carolina.
News: The Cardinals defense, coming off a horrendous performance in which it gave up 56 points to the Jets in Week 4, rebounded nicely Week 5 against the Bills. It allowed only 17 points on 287 yards. It recorded five sacks and one interception, recovering three fumbles.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST had looked like a sleeper Fantasy unit before that game against the Jets, and this performance against the Bills gives it second life. Against the Cowboys in Week 6, though, you might want to leave the Cardinals DST on waivers.
News: After one quarter Week 4 against the Jets, the Cardinals defense looked great. They shutout New York and even forced Brett Favre to throw an interception. Too bad the game didn't end there. The Jets posted 34 points in the second quarter and ended up with 56 during a rout of Arizona. The Cardinals allowed 373 total yards, including 284 through the air. Favre threw six touchdowns and was sacked just twice.
Analysis: Favre and the Jets took full advantage of the Cardinals without star safety Adrian Wilson, who out with a hamstring injury. Once Favre realized he could throw on the Cardinals, he took full advantage. The Arizona defense has been so-so in 2008 and the Cardinals DST is a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 5 against the Bills.
News: Arizona's defense was not sharp against the Redskins in Week 3 in Washington. The Cardinals lost the game, 24-17, as the Cardinals DST allowed 323 total yards and didn't record a single turnover. Karlos Dansby and Gerald Hayes got to QB Jason Campbell for the Cardinals' only two sacks on the game.
Analysis: The Cardinals have been limited to two sacks in the last two games against the Dolphins and Redskins. They are 2-1 on the season but defeated the 49ers and Dolphins, so we aren't talking about beating Super Bowl contenders. The team travels to face the New York Jets in Week 4 and they'll attempt to get to Brett Favre more than they did Chad Pennington and Jason Campbell. Consider the Cardinals DST a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 4 against the Jets.
News: Arizona's big-play offense is getting all the attention in the Cardinals' first 2-0 start in 19 years. The overlooked defense has been just as good. The Cardinals have allowed 23 points in victories over San Francisco (23-13) and Miami (31-10). That's the fewest given up by the franchise in its opening two contests since 1977. The only touchdown the Dolphins scored on Sunday came in the final minutes with the outcome long since concluded. "We're playing well," defensive end Bertrand Berry said. "We've been able to establish a style of play the first couple of games. We're just trying to keep it going."
Analysis: Arizona is seventh in the NFL in yards allowed and tied for fifth in points given up heading into Sunday's game at Washington. The team has a 5-0 advantage in turnovers, with all of them coming against the 49ers. "We talked about that in defense, that we were excited about our defense," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We have a number of players playing at a high level." Whisenhunt listed Berry, linebacker Chike Okeafor and Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson back from injuries. Then the team added free agents including linebacker Travis LaBoy and a few rookies to give the defense much more depth than a year ago. "We've got a lot of guys coming in and we're fresh," Berry said. "When you can have a rotation and guys can get rest and come back in and continue to play at a high level, then our chances of being a good defense go up." Consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 3.
News: While the Cardinals DST didn't force a turnover in Week 2's win over the Dolphins, they did hold Miami to 236 yards and 10 points and made two sacks.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST can be a turnover machine at times, but the Dolphins offense is so low-powered that Arizona didn't get many chances to go ball-hawking on Sunday. The Cardinals play at Washington in Week 3, and you should consider them a No. 2 Fantasy option for that matchup.
News: Arizona doesn't have just two pass rushers honing in on opposing quarterbacks from both ends of the defense. The Cardinals have four. Not at the same time, of course, but the team has four players who can split time at positions where pressuring quarterbacks from the edge is a prime objective. The team brought in Travis LaBoy and Clark Haggans as free agents this season to join Bertrand Berry and Chike Okeafor as a formidable pass-rushing force. "Travis said it yesterday," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "He considers Bert and himself the same guy -- both No. 1s. ... We feel very good about that position. It's one of our strong points."
Analysis: In Week 1's 23-13 victory over San Francisco, Berry knocked the ball out of quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan's hands and had a sack. Late in the game, LaBoy sacked Sullivan, then recovered the quarterback's fumble. It was one of two sacks for LaBoy. In Arizona's defensive scheme, LaBoy and his backup, Berry, are defensive ends, while Okeafor and backup Haggans are labeled linebackers. "The depth of our outside backers really helps us," Whisenhunt said after the team practiced Thursday in preparation for Sunday's home opener against Miami. "We saw evidence of that in the game (against San Francisco) because the guys were really fresh." Consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 Fantasy option Week 2.
News: The Cardinals DST was pretty impressive in a Week 1 win over San Francisco. Arizona limited the 49ers to 13 points and 291 yards. While the yardage might be a bit high, the Cardinals recorded four sacks, an interception and recovered four fumbles against the Niners.
Analysis: The Cardinals allowed too much yardage to a poor 49ers team and that negative may outweigh the positives of Sunday's game. They have guys who can make things happen defensively but will still allow a good number of yardage and points as the season goes on. In Week 2 they face the Dolphins at home. Miami managed 14 points off the Jets in Week 1 and doesn't have a juggernaut of an offense but it still figures to be better than San Francisco's. For that reason, avoid the Cardinals DST in Week 2.
News: The Cardinals DST shut out the Raiders in Saturday's preseason game, holding Oakland to just 165 total yards. Arizona made one interception and sacked the QB four times.
Analysis: While Saturday's outing was nice, don't expect the Cardinals to post anything close to a shutout in the regular season. Continue to consider them a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Cardinals selected CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with their first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Rodgers-Cromartie wowed us with a very fast and fluid 40-yard dash at the Combine, and the former Tennessee State product should have a shot to fit in right away with the Cardinals. He is the cousin of Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie.
Analysis: There are questions about his past, and concerns about him having just one kidney, but the Cards couldn't pass on this talented defender. This helps the value of the Cardinals DST, but not enough to make them any more than a No. 2 DST in 2008.
News: Cardinals inside linebacker Karlos Dansby signed his one-year tender offer worth just over $8 million Thursday as the team's franchise player. Intermittent talks about a long-term deal have stalled. Dansby is considered one of the fastest and versatile players at his position in the NFL. He was switched from outside to inside linebacker last season and responded with a career-best 117 tackles, despite missing two games with a knee injury. He intercepted three passes and forced four fumbles.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST finished 14th in standard-scoring Fantasy leagues, fueled mostly by a strong start. As the season rolled on, the Cardinals defense was battered by injuries (Eric Green and Adrian Wilson were the prominent injured Redbirds). As a unit, Arizona totaled 36 sacks, 25 fumble recoveries, 18 interceptions (six for touchdowns) and one punt return for a touchdown. With the mentality of two ex-Steelers coaches (Ken Whisenhunt, Russ Grimm) leading the way, expect Arizona to focus on becoming an even stronger defensive unit in 2008. It will help that they're playing in a sagging division. Consider the Cardinals DST a sleeper unit, especially if they truly improve their talent this offseason.
News: The Cardinals DST finished 14th in standard-scoring Fantasy leagues, fueled mostly by a strong start. As the season rolled on, though, the Cardinals defense was battered by injuries (Eric Green and Adrian Wilson were the prominent injured Redbirds). As a unit, Arizona totaled 36 sacks, 25 fumble recoveries, 18 interceptions (six for touchdowns) and one punt return for a touchdown.
Analysis: With the mentality of two ex-Steelers coaches (Ken Whisenhunt, Russ Grimm) leading the way, expect Arizona to focus on becoming an even stronger defensive unit in 2008. It will help that they're playing in a sagging division. Consider the Cardinals DST a sleeper unit, especially if they truly improve their talent this offseason.
News: In Week 17 vs. St. Louis, the Cardinals DST had three sacks, three interceptions, a forced fumble and two defensive touchdowns.
Analysis: This was easily the best game of the year for the Cardinals as they held the Rams to 19 points, Steven Jackson to 55 yards and Marc Bulger to 176 passing yards. Assuming they add some talent this offseason and their hurt star defenders heal up, the Cardinals DST will be a sleeper option in 2008 Fantasy play, especially since they'll be playing in the soft NFC West.
News: The Cardinals DST allowed a ton of points and yards to Atlanta in Arizona's 30-27 overtime win over the Falcons in Week 16, but did manage to sack Chris Redman three times and pick him off once in the victory.
Analysis: The Cardinals have had a few really nice outings this season, but mostly they've been less than average, which is exactly what they were in Week 16. They face a pretty potent Rams offense in Week 17 and are far from an advisable start with the way Steven Jackson is playing right now.
News: The Cardinals DST gave up 421 yards and 31 points to New Orleans in Arizona's 31-24 loss to the Saints in Week 15. They did make one start and grabbed a fumble recovery in the loss.
Analysis: The Cardinals come through with nice defensive outings on occasion, but this game was always going to be a tough one. The Saints came in playing well offensively and the Cardinals have now given up 72 in the last two games. With all that said, the Cardinals are a great sleeper start in Week 16 against the brutal Falcons.
News: Any way you slice it, the Cardinals wish they had a mulligan Week 14 against the Seahawks. Seattle dominated in all aspects of the game and put 42 points on the scoreboard before it was all said and done. The Seahawks scored five touchdowns, including an 84-yard interception return by Marcus Trufant. The Cardinals defense did not force a turnover and sacked QB Matt Hasselbeck once.
Analysis: The Cardinals were sorely missing DBs Eric Green and Adrian Wilson, both on IR, against the Seahawks. It wasn't pretty from the get go. The Cardinals had a good defense at one point this season, but have since sputtered. Consider the Cardinals DST a less than desireable Fantasy option Week 15 against the Saints.
News: The Cardinals played their first game Week 13 against the Browns after learning they would be without All-Pro safety Adrian Wilson (heel) and cornerback Eric Green (groin) for the rest of the season. They responded by holding the Browns to 379 yards and 21 points. They received a huge spark from cornerback Rod Hood, who had two interceptions including one he returned 71 yards for a touchdown. Daryl Blackstock had the lone sack for Arizona.
Analysis: Arizona did an admirable job against the high-powered Browns despite losing two key players earlier in the week. It is a good morale boost as they head down the stretch. However, they will be really tested by the pass-happy Seahawks in Week 14. The Cardinals DST remains just a No. 2 Fantasy option Week 14.
News: Cardinals Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right heel. He becomes the third Arizona defensive starter lost for the season in the past three weeks. The team placed cornerback Eric Green on injured reserve Tuesday with a groin tear. He was injured in Sunday's overtime loss to San Francisco. Defensive end Bertrand Berry went down with a torn left triceps against Detroit on Nov. 11.
Analysis: The Cardinals play at home vs. a good Cleveland offense in Week 13, one that should put up a lot of points with Arizona's secondary in shambles. Steer clear of the Cardinals DST this week and most likely in every other week this season.
News: The Cardinals defense had a rough game Week 12 against the 49ers. The 49ers came into the game with the worst overall offense in the NFL. They were averaging just 218 yards and 11 points per game. However, the Cardinals were forced to play without star safety Adrian Wilson (heel) for the second straight game and the 49ers took advantage. San Francisco racked up 37 points and 374 yards, including 116 on the ground by Frank Gore. The Cardinals managed three sacks, but no turnovers.
Analysis: The matchup was heavily in favor of the Cardinals defense Week 12, but they were lost without Wilson. Just goes to show you what type of player he truly is. It doesn't get any easier Week 13 against the Browns, who actually have a top 15 offense. Consider the Cardinals DST a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Cardinals DST picked off Carson Palmer four times, returning two of them for touchdowns, and tallied one sack and one fumble recovery in a 35-27 win over the Bengals in Week 11.
Analysis: Defensive touchdowns are huge in Fantasy play for DSTs, and two in one game is better than any owner could ever expect from his unit. The Cardinals could be set for another nice outing in Week 12 when they host the woeful 49ers.
News: The Cardinals DST travels to Cincinnati on Sunday in Week 11. The Bengals have the fifth-best passing offense, with Carson Palmer at the helm, and the 28th rushing offense.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is an improving young squad, with a healthy LB Karlos Dansby as their leader. This unit is ranked ninth in the NFL, and their 24 sacks place them in the top 10. Despite their progress, we still think it best only to start this unit in larger leagues this week.
News: The Cardinals badgered Jon Kitna and the Lions in Week 10, picking up four sacks, three fumbles and two interceptions. They allowed 21 points on only 245 yards. Their special teams, meanwhile, gained 138 yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals have an underrated DST, but one you should only play in Fantasy when the matchups are right. That won't be the case for Week 11 at Cincinnati, so keep the Cardinals DST reserved.
News: Detroit travels to Arizona Sunday in Week 10. The Lions are ranked 12th in total offense (ninth through the air and 21st on the ground). But the Lions have given up a league-high 36 sacks this season.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is a solid unit to play against Detroit. They are ranked ninth in total defense (seventh against the pass and 18th against the run). They have 20 sacks also. Start them in 12-team leagues.
News: The Cardinals DST allowed 350 total net yards at Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Bucs rushed for 162 yards and passed for 188 yards. The Cardinals recorded three sacks to reach 20 on the season.
Analysis: Head coach Ken Whisenhunt's hybrid 3-4/4-3 Cardinals DST has been better than many expected, and they should do well against the Lions' offense in Week 10. For now, consider them as a low-end No. 1 defense.
News: Arizona gets a bye in Week 8, before they'll have to travel to Tampa Bay in Week 9.
Analysis: Arizona has the ninth-best total defense this season (sixth against the pass and 16th against the run). They have 17 sacks and six interceptions. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt's hybrid 3-4/4-3 defense has been better than many expected, and they should do well against the Bucs' 24th-ranked offense. For now, keep them reserved as a No. 2 defense.
News: The Cardinals put together a strong defensive effort Week 7 against the Redskins, but it wasn't enough as Washington posted 21 points. Arizona limited Washington to 160 total yards, including just 87 through the air. The Cardinals managed one sack and one interception.
Analysis: Arizona did well against the Redskins on defense without one of their top players in LB Karlos Dansby (knee). The Cardinals DST is a decent Fantasy option when the matchup appears favorable. Arizona is on a bye Week 8 and return to action Week 9 against the Bucs.
News: ILB Karlos Dansby left Sunday's game in the first quarter with a sprained knee. The Sports XChange notes that his MRI results were not available yet, but Dansby is hoping it's not more serious than a sprained MCL. Arizona plays at Washington in Week 7.
Analysis: Monty Beisel would be the player to step in if Dansby misses more time, which is highly likely at this stage. When healthy, Dansby is an excellent IDP player in his breakout season. Beisel could be worth using as a bye-week replacement in larger formats. The Cardinals rank 15th in total defense. They have 16 sacks so far, but Washington has given up only eight sacks. The Cardinals DST is one that should be reserved for this matchup.
News: The Arizona Cardinals DST recorded two sacks and nothing else in a 25-10 loss to the Panthers in Week 6.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST looked to have a favorable match-up in Week 6 against the Panthers, especially when Vinny Testaverde got the start, but Arizona couldn't come up with any big plays on Sunday. They are a reasonable useful unit when playing well, however, so consider them a No. 2 option in Week 7 against Washington.
News: The Cardinals DST will host Carolina in Week 6. The Panthers have David Carr under center now, and their running game is ranked 12th in the NFL. But the Panthers have scored only one rushing touchdown this season and the Cardinals are ranked 13th against the run.
Analysis: Arizona's DST is an up-and-coming unit. They have really taken to Ken Whisenhunt's 3-4/4-3 hybrid, and they now rank 14th in total defense. The Cardinals are 18th against the pass. They have 14 sacks and five interceptions -- consider starting them for this favorable matchup.
News: The Cardinals DST scored on a fumble return and totaled two sacks and three interceptions in their 34-31 win at St. Louis in Week 5. The Cardinals allowed 262 passing yards and 123 rushing yards and three passing touchdowns.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who play the matchups used the Cardinals DST in Week 5 and were not disappointed. Look for them to do well again in Week 6 when they host the beleaguered Panthers (quarterbacked by David Carr). Consider your options before settling with them, but figure that the Cards DST is a decent option for the coming week.
News: The Rams will host Arizona in Week 5 on Sunday. St. Louis ranks 29th in total offense, including 26th in the passing game and 24th on the ground. They have allowed 11 sacks so far this season.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST ranks 12th overall (10th against the pass and 11th against the run), but they have 12 sacks on the season and head coach Ken Whisenhunt's hybrid 3-4/4-3 defense is playing well. Consider using them against this struggling Rams offense in Week 5.
News: The Cardinals allowed only 14 points on 282 yards Week 4 against the Steelers. They recorded four sacks and two interceptions. The special teams also benefited from a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown by Steve Breaston, finishing with a total of 156 yards.
Analysis: The underrated Cardinals DST had a great game Sunday. Consider it a sleeper for Week 5 at the Rams.
News: The Cardinals DST will host the third-ranked Pittsburgh Steelers offense in Week 4. The Steelers have averaged 32.3 points in their first three games of the season. They have allowed just four sacks and they have thrown only one interception.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST rank 14th in total defense, 12th in passing defense and 15th in rushing defense. The 3-4/4-3 hybrid has looked good at different times this season, but this matchup is too much for them from a Fantasy perspective. Keep them reserved through Week 4.
News: The Cardinals DST had four sacks and one fumble recovery Sunday against Baltimore. J.J. Arrington had three kickoff returns for 63 yards and Steve Breaston had one kickoff return for 33 yards. Breaston also had one punt return for 13 yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST should not be used in Week 4 against the Steelers.
News: When the Cardinals offense faces off against the Ravens defense at Baltimore in Week 3, we know they're in for a test. But the same can be said of the Ravens offense against the Cardinals defense. The Cardinals have held opponents to 20 points each in their first two contests without allowing a rusher to top 70 yards on the ground. Considering the rushers they've faced have been Frank Gore and Shaun Alexander, that's pretty impressive.
Analysis: Not many Fantasy owners are brave enough to trust in the Cardinals DST at this point, but keep them in mind if you're going to need a bye-week replacement in the coming weeks. They're a last-ditch option at Baltimore in Week 3.
News: The Cardinals allowed 20 points and 370 yards of offense in Week 2 vs. Seattle. DL Darnell Dockett recovered a Matt Hasselbeck fumble for the only turnover forced by the Seahawks. DL Antonio Smith had the only sack of the game for Arizona.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense came back down to earth after a very good first week in San Francisco. They're really best-used as a matchup defense to be used against poor offense. Consider Week 3 at Baltimore a decent matchup for larger leagues.
News: The Arizona Cardinals defense allowed just 194 total net yards and 20 points in Week 1 at San Francisco, but they imploded on a final drive late in the loss. LB Karlos Dansby led the way with four solo tackles and seven assists and the team finished with three sacks and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST will have its hands full in Week 2 against RB Shaun Alexander and the Seattle Seahawks. They remain a bye-week replacement at best, despite their mastery of the 49ers in the opener.
News: Head coach Ken Whisenhunt is switching the Cardinals' base defense to a 3-4 from a 4-3. The strength of the unit remains playmaking strong safety Adrian Wilson, who made the Pro Bowl for the first time a year ago. The team will miss strong side linebacker Chike Okeafor, who could be sidelined all season with a torn biceps tendon. He'll be replaced by Calvin Pace, a 2003 first-round pick who has started only six times in the last three years. Even so, Wilson is confident the defense -- and the Cardinals -- will be better than they were a year ago. "We'll be a pretty good football team," Wilson said. "Guys have tons of potential."
Analysis: The Chargers rolled up a staggering 506 yards of offense without LaDainian Tomlinson, who has not played in the preseason, druing Saturday's game against the Cardinals. Not a good showing at all. Arizona's defense is undergoing some major changes this year as they move to the 3-4 scheme. Because they have two dates each with St. Louis and Seattle this year, and because the Cardinals defense generally posts average numbers, don't expect this DST unit to be anything better than a desperation bye-week replacement in 2007. We won't believe Wilson's projection until we see it in action.
News: The Cardinals knew their offense was solid. But it may have to be spectacular if the defense doesn't improve quickly. Arizona's defense ranked 29th in the NFL a year ago. The Chargers gained 265 yards in the first half during Saturday's preseason game, with QB Philip Rivers completing 14-of-23 passes for 217 yards. On its first two possessions, San Diego marched 65 yards on 14 plays and 80 yards on 10 plays. The first drive led to a 33-yard Nate Kaeding field goal. The Chargers converted three straight third downs on the drive, including a 24-yard pass from Rivers to Vincent Jackson on third-and-8 at their own 34. The second drive ended in a 19-yard burst up the middle by Darren Sproles, who faked safety Aaron Francisco to the turf and sprinted into the end zone.
Analysis: The Chargers rolled up a staggering 506 yards of offense without LaDainian Tomlinson, who has not played in the preseason. Not a good showing at all for the Cardinals.
News: The Arizona Republic reports that Cardinals OLB Chike Okeafor has a torn left biceps muscle and would most likely be out for the season if he has surgery on it. With the Cardinals moving to a 3-4 defense, he was expected to be a key component on the outside. Calvin Pace, Joe Tafoya and Darryl Blackstock will battle for his spot.
Analysis: Arizona's defense is undergoing some major changes this year as they move to the 3-4 scheme. Because they have two dates each with St. Louis and Seattle this year, and because the Cardinals defense generally posts average numbers, don't expect this DST unit to be anything better than a desperation bye-week replacement in 2007.
News: Karlos Dansby has an age-old motivation going for him this season: money. Arizona's big-play linebacker is in the final year of his contract, and he plans to show his worth to the Cardinals and the rest of the NFL. "The caliber of teams that we're playing this year, I'm getting the opportunity to show the world what I'm made of, just put my resume out there," Dansby said before the Cardinals practiced Tuesday.
Analysis: Entering his fourth season with Arizona, Dansby has been moved from outside to inside linebacker by new coach Ken Whisenhunt. Since he was drafted in the second round with the 33rd pick overall Dansby has shown a knack for the big defensive play. "I'm patient, man, and that's a virtue," he said. "I'm comfortable right now. I'm not in need of a big contract, but if they're willing to step up to the plate and extend me, that would be a blessing." Look for big things from Dansby and the Cardinals DST, as his extra motivation might make them a little better as a whole. They're still a bye-week replacement at best, however, in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Cardinals signed free-agent cornerback Roderick Hood to a five-year contract on Sunday. The 25-year-old Hood played for the Eagles last season, but missed six games because of injuries. He had 18 tackles and one sack. In 56 games with the Eagles, he collected 98 tackles, five interceptions, four fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He's also returned kickoffs 53 times for 1,236 yards, an average of 23 yards per attempt, and made 40 special teams tackles.
Analysis: The Cards are working on bolstering their defense, adding FS Terrence Holt earlier in the offseason. They're still not worthy of a draft choice in Fantasy play at this point.
News: Free safety Terrence Holt signed a five-year contract with the Cardinals. Holt, the younger brother of Rams wide receiver Torry Holt, started 15 games last season for the Lions. He had a career-high 76 tackles, 51 solos, and three interceptions. Holt became a fulltime starter in 2005 but was sidelined after 10 games because of an elbow injury. He has played in 53 games, 27 of them starts, with 117 tackles (107 solos) eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Holt now gets the chance to play alongside his N.C. State teammate, Pro Bowl strong safety Adrian Wilson.
Analysis: Don't sleep on Holt, who is a good football player. He'll definitely help the Cardinals against the run and the pass in 2007, making their defense a little bit better. Consider them a No. 2 Fantasy DST in 2007 drafts.
News: The Cardinals DST totaled four touchdowns in 2006 (three defensive), adding 38 sacks, 16 interceptions and 32 fumbles recovered. Arizona ended the year ranked 29th in total defense.
Analysis: Unless wholesale changes are made for the Cardinals, don't expect them to be a draftable DST unit in 2007. Do keep in mind, however, that former Steelers assistant coach Ken Whisenhunt is in charge in Arizona now and knows the value of a gritty defense, so there is room for change.
News: The Arizona Cardinals allowed 27 points and 387 total net yards in Week 17 at San Diego. They also had three sacks, one interception and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST will remains a No. 2 option in all larger Fantasy leagues heading into 2007 barring any huge draft or offseason moves.
News: The Arizona Cardinals declared 3QB Shane Boyd, OG Elton Brown, OT Brandon Gorin, LB Gerald Hayes (ribs), QB Matt Leinart (shoulder), DT Jonathan Lewis, FB A.J. Schable and WR Todd Watkins inactive for Week 17 at San Diego.
Analysis: With the exception of Matt Leinart, who is a star Fantasy player and big-time keeper for the 2007 season, none of the other players are worthy of consideration heading into Draft Day 2007 in Fantasy leagues.
News: The Arizona Cardinals DST allowed 20 points and 223 total yards in Week 16 at San Francisco. They also recorded four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 17 at San Diego, whether they are facing RB LaDainian Tomlinson or Michael Turner.
News: The Arizona Cardinals declared RB Diamond Ferri, LB Gerald Hayes, DL Jonathan Lewis, QB John Navarre, FB A.J. Schable and CB Robert Tate inactive for Week 15 at San Francisco.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth using for the Week 17 regular season finale.
News: The Cardinals DST scored a touchdown when DL Antonio Smith returned a fumble 4 yards for a score. DB Robert Griffith had eight tackles and an interception. DB Adrian Wilson had seven tackles. DB Antrel Rolle had 11 tackles. LB Gerald Hayes had eight tackles. LB Orlando Huff had 12 tackles. LB Karlos Dansby had eight tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Cardinals DST a No. 2 option for Week 16 against the 49ers and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Cardinals allowed 21 points and 348 yards in Week 14 vs. Seattle. They recovered three fumbles in the game and sacked QB Matt Hasselbeck three times.
Analysis: The Cardinals will face the Broncos in Week 15. Led by a rookie QB, that matchup seems decent for Fantasy owners to take advantage of if needed.
News: The Arizona Cardinals promoted CB Darrell Hunter from the practice squad to the active roster on Monday and they signed DT Kenny King to a one-year contract.
Analysis: Neither of the two players make the Cardinals DST more attractive from a Fantasy perspective.
News: Cardinals DB Adrian Wilson, DB David Macklin and LB Gerald Hayes all had interceptions in Week 13 against the Rams. The Cardinals defense yielded 394 yards and 20 points, but got to QB Marc Bulger four times (DL Chike Okeafor 2 1/2, DL Antonio Smith 1/2 and DL Chris Cooper 1).
Analysis: The Cardinals defense had a pretty strong day against the Rams. Despite giving up nearly 400 total yards, the three interceptions and four sacks made the day a whole lot better. Plus, the Cardinals won the game. However, it is not recommended you start the Cardinals DST in Week 14 against the Seahawks. Hayes and Wilson are high-end Fantasy options in IDP leagues, while Okeafor could be used as a low-end option.
News: The Cardinals scored touchdowns on a 99-yard kickoff return by J.J. Arrington and on a 99-yard fumble return by Adrian Wilson. The defense allowed 31 points and 412 yards of offense. Karlos Dansby picked up two sacks, the only two on the afternoon.
Analysis: Despite the two scores, the Cardinals defense is not a recommended Fantasy unit for Week 13 at St. Louis. You can't hold your breath every week hoping for 99-yard returns.
News: Cardinals DE Bertrand Berry will miss the rest of the season after tearing triceps muscles in Sunday's victory over Detroit. An MRI exam Monday revealed the seriousness of the injury, coach Dennis Green said. Berry will undergo surgery to repair the tear, probably this week. "A big loss for us," Green said. "I've always said Bertrand is the No. 1 leader on our team." Antonio Smith, a third-year pro out of Oklahoma State, will replace Berry, as he did a year ago.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense isn't an appealing one to begin with, but this injury will cost them a few sacks over the rest of the year. Keep the Cardinals defense off Fantasy rosters when they play at Minnesota in Week 12 unless you have no better option.
News: The Cardinals held the Lions to 10 points and 281 totals yards in Week 11. DL Bertrand Berry had two sacks, DL Chike Okeafor had one and so did DL Chris Cooper. DB Aaron Francisco had an interception.
Analysis: The Cardinals could be considered a sleeper DST for Week 12 against Minnesota. Berry is the only player that should be used in IDP leagues.
News: The Cardinals DST had no sacks or turnovers against Dallas. LB Gerald Hayes had nine tackles. LB Karlos Dansby has eight tackles. DB Adrian Wilson had seven tackles. DL Darnell Dockett had six tackles. DB Antrelle Rolle had five tackles. DL Bertrand Berry had one tackle.
Analysis: The Cardinals could be considered a sleeper DST for Week 11 against Detroit. Use their IDP players as needed.
News: The Cardinals defense will have quite a challenge in Week 10 when the Cowboys come to Arizona. The Cards rank 25th in total defense while the Cowboys are fifth in total offense.
Analysis: Don't start the Cardinals defense if you can help it in Week 10 Fantasy action.
News: The Cardinals DST gave up 31 points and had no turnovers and no sacks. DB Robert Griffith had 10 tackles. DB Eric Green had eight tackles. DB Adrian Wilson had three tackles.
Analysis: The Cardinals DST is off in Week 9 and should not be used in any Fantasy leagues. Keep all IDP players reserved in Week 9 also.
News: The Arizona Cardinals DST allowed 22 points and 395 total net yards in Week 7 at Oakland. They were able to rack up five sacks, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The effort was a little disappointing, as Fantasy owners used them as a bye-week replacement against the Raiders. However, Oakland had some other ideas and exhibited some nice pride. The Cards are not worth using for Week 8 at Green Bay.
News: In addition to WR Larry Fitzgerald (hamstring), the Arizona Cardinals announced OG Elton Brown, OG Milford Brown, DL Kendrick Clancy (ankle), LB James Darling (calf) and LB Brandon Johnson are inactive for Week 7 at Oakland.
Analysis: Other than Fitzgerald, the players mentioned above are not recommended Fantasy options in most leagues.
News: The Arizona Cardinals defense allowed just three points against the Chicago offense, but the Bears scooped up two fumbles recoveries for touchdowns and KR Devin Hester also cracked off an 83-yard game-winning punt return in Week 6.
Analysis: The Cardinals allowed just 168 total net yards while racking up two sacks, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Unfortunately, the three touchdowns by the Bears DST counts against Fantasy owners using the Cardinals DST. They played very well and are a decent bye-week replacement for Week 7 at Oakland.
News: The Arizona Cardinals declared OG Elton Brown, OG Milford Brown, DL Kendrick Clancy (ankle), LB James Darling (calf), WR Larry Fitzgerald (hamstring), LB Brandon Johnson, QB John Navarre and CB Robert Tate inactive for Week 6 against the Bears.
Analysis: Only Fitzgerald is a useful Fantasy option when he is healthy. In fact, he is a must-start in all leagues. The others are not recommended in any leagues.
News: The Cardinals defense could not hold onto the win in Week 5 against the Chiefs yielding 23 points and 301 total yards. They did sack QB Damon Huard three times, force two fumbles but were not able to force an interception.
Analysis: This was the first time the Cardinals have held an opponent under 340 yards of offense. They could be turning a corner. Their true test comes in Week 6 when the Bears come to town. It is not recommended you play the Cardinals DST in Week 6 against the high-octane Bears offense.
News: The Cardinals allowed 32 points in Week 4 at Atlanta. They gave up 405 total yards of offense and allowed 262 of those yards on the ground. They tallied two sacks in the game and intercepted one pass.
Analysis: The Cardinals have yet to hold an opponent under 340 total yards and there is no reason to believe it will happen in Week 5 against the Chiefs. It is not recommended you use the Cardinals DST in Week 5.
News: The Cardinals were able to bottle up Rams RB Steven Jackson in Week 3, but struggled keeping QB Marc Bulger from passing for more than 300 yards. The Rams totaled 364 yards and 16 points on the afternoon. They did not have any interceptions, but recovered two fumbles. LB Gerald Hayes led the team with 10 tackles. DB Antrel Rolle had five tackles, while DL Kendrick Clancy had four tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Cardinals have yet to hold an opponent under 340 total yards and it doesn't look like Week 4 against the Falcons will be the week that happens. It is not recommended you use the Cardinals DST in Week 4.

Cardinals D struggles once again
News: The Seattle Seahawks racked up 341 yards of offense and 21 points on the Cardinals defense in Week 2. They did force a fumble, intercept two passes and sack QB Matt Hasselbeck three times for a loss of 26 yards. Second-year DL Darnell Dockett had 12 tackles and one sack, while S Adrian Wilson had a big game racking up seven tackles, two sacks and one interception.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense did get better as the game went on, even playing better after CB Eric Green left the game with an injury, but they are still a work in progress and we don't recommend playing them Week 3 vs. St. Louis.

Cardinals DST loses CB
News: Cardinals CB Eric Green, named a starter after Week 1, left Week 2 game at Seattle with an appearent thigh injury. Green replaced CB David Macklin, who is inactive for Week 2, at starting cornerback during the week.
Analysis: If Green is unable to return, the Cardinals defense is in some serious trouble. With Macklin already out, the depth chart at cornerback would be extremely thin.

Cards LBs back at work
News: Arizona could have linebacker Karlos Dansby back for Sunday's game in Seattle. He practiced on Wednesday and was listed as probable for this week's game. Dansby missed all of training camp as he underwent thumb surgery in the offseason, then was slowed by a toe injury during rehabilitation. Dansby had four sacks, three interceptions and 103 tackles last season, his second in the NFL. During training camp, Green had criticized the absent Dansby for the slowness of his recovery. The two have since met to talk things out, but Dansby was cautious about a timetable for his return. "I'm getting back into the swing of things. I'm just trying to take a small step at a time," he said. "You've got to crawl before you walk. There are still various tests I need to pass." Teammate Calvin Pace (ankle) is also probable.
Analysis: Dansby is a decent young linebacker when he's healthy, although he has also had some attitude problems with the coaching staff. The Cardinals DST is a young unit with promise, but they aren't worth starting in most Fantasy leagues right now, especially at Seattle in Week 2.

LB Dansby might be ready
News: The East Valley Tribune notes that LB Karlos Dansby (toe) might be back for practice with the Cardinals this week, but his status is "still up in the air," according to head coach Dennis Green.
Analysis: Dansby is a decent young linebacker when he's healthy, although he has also had some attitude problems with the coaching staff. The Cardinals DST is a young unit with promise, but they aren't worth starting in most Fantasy leagues right now.

Cards D gives up 390+ yards
News: The 49ers almost gained 400 total yards in their Week 1 game against the Cardinals. The 49ers racked up 393 yards and 27 points but lost 34-27. The Cards' D did force two fumbles in which they recovered both. They also had one sack but no interceptions. Leading tackler was CB Antrel Rolle with eight total. LB Gerald Hayes had the team's lone sack plus five tackles. DB Adrian Wilson also chipped in with some big hits.
Analysis: The Cardinals D isn't as impressive as their offense. Rolle and Hayes were the lone bright spots on an abysmal defensive day. Start giving Rolle serious consideration as an IDP candidate at cornerback now that he is healthy. Week 2 matchup against the Seahawks ins't a favorable one so think long and hard before inserting the Cards' D in your lineup.

Cards get some defensive depth
News: The Cardinals claimed safety Hanik Milligan and cornerback Matt Ware off waivers. To make room for them, they released CB LaMont Reid and placed WR LeRon McCoy on Injured Reserve with a thumb injury.
Analysis: Both players will help provide depth. The Cardinals DST remains a unit far from being usable on a weekly basis in Fantasy Football. In Week 1, they'll host the 49ers, and that's not a bad matchup for them, so if your primary DST has drawn a tough offense, consider the Cards since they'll have an easier opponent.

DE Berry recovery update
News: The East Valley Tribune reports DE Bertrand Berry (knee) will rest for the remaining two preseason games and there is now a chance he might not be ready for the team's regular season opener against San Francisco.
Analysis: Head coach Dennis Green is hoping to have Green in the starting lineup for the regular season opener against San Francisco, but that is now questionable. At this point, the Cardinals DST looks to be only worth a look as a bye-week replacement.

LB Dansby out, DE Berry leaves
News: Karlos Dansby (thumb, toe) was inactive for Saturday's preseason game at New England. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe is reporting DE Bertrand Berry suffered a knee injury in the game.
Analysis: There is no timetable for Dansby's return and the severity of Berry's injury is not yet known. What is known is QB Tom Brady picked apart the Cardinals defense, which will have to be markedly better than this. At this point, the Cardinals DST looks to be only worth a look as a bye-week replacement.

Cardinals DST records 37 sacks
News: The Cardinals DST recorded 15 interceptions, 37 sacks, 11 fumble recoveries, three TDs and allowed 387 points (24.2 PPG) this season.

Cards DE Pace out for season
News: Cardinals DE Calvin Pace is out for the season after cutting his arm while falling through a window at his home over the weekend. He underwent surgery at an Atlanta Hospital. "As they say, a lot of accidents happen around the house so you have to be careful," coach Dennis Green said. "He just kind of slipped and went to brace himself and went through the window."
Analysis: Pace was one of two first-round draft picks for Arizona in 2003, the 18th selection overall. He started all 16 games as a rookie, but was replaced when Green took over as coach in 2004. This season, Pace played when the Cardinals used a five-down lineman set. He is not worth owning in Fantasy IDP leagues.

Cards have cornerback problems
News: The Cardinals D didn't allow a point, or so much as a field-goal attempt vs. the 49ers, but they have serious problems in the secondary right now. CB Antrel Rolle is out for the season after surgery Monday revealed the meniscus damage in his left knee was more severe than first believed. Raymond Walls, who started Sunday in place of Rolle, has strained muscles in his left hip and groin area. He might not be able to play Sunday. David Macklin, the team's other starter, didn't make it past the first quarter with a strained hamstring. It's doubtful he'll play this week.
Analysis: If Walls and Macklin can't play, that means the two starters will be rookies Eric Green and Lamont Reid. The only backup is veteran Robert Tate, who had an interception against the 49ers. The secondary problems could make Carolina's receivers and QB Jake Delhomme a solid play in Week 5. Consider the Cardinals defense a risky start despite their great effort against the 49ers. "We blitzed more and we got on our giddy-up, so to speak," coach Dennis Green said. "I think that was probably our best defensive game. I don't know if we've ever held a team to no points, no field-goal attempts and maybe no ball on the 30-yard line."

Cardinals DST gets raw deal
News: The Cardinals defense held the 49ers offense off of the scoreboard in Week 4 in Mexico City, but the offense allowed the San Francisco defense to find the end zone twice in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Arizona defense allowed only 168 total net yards while sacking San Francisco quarterbacks five times, posting one interception and pouncing on three fumbles. The beleaguered defense had its best effort of the season. They will look to carry the momentum into Week 5 against the Panthers.

News: The Arizona Republic reports Antrel Rolle could need surgery to repair damage to his injured knee. He is out this week and could be out for an extended period of time.

News: The East Valley Tribune reports that MLB James Darling (sprained knee) will miss at least two games. The Cardinals also signed rookie CB Lamont Reid to the practice squad.

Cards DST ripped for 42 points
News: The Cardinals defense got off to a decent start in Week 1 at N.Y. Giants, highlighted by a LB Karlos Dansby interception return for touchdown, but it was all downhill after that. They allowed 42 points and 275 total net yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals defense really allowed only 28 points, but the Giants were able to tack on a 95-yard kickoff return by WR Willie Ponder and a 52-yard punt return by RB Chad Morton for two special teams scores. The Cardinals will look to tighten things up against the Rams in Week 2.

Cards sign Antrel Rolle
News: The Arizona Republic reports Antrel Rolle has signed a six-year contract worth up to $43 million. The deal calls for $13.6 million in signing bonuses and $25-26 million through the first five seasons.
Analysis: Rolle, who is slated to start as a rookie, is expected to make his training camp debut Wednesday. The Cardinals DST is one to watch this season and worth a late-round flier in drafts.
News: The Arizona Cardinals selected Rolle with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Analysis: Rolle is a solid addition for the Cardinals, who lack a No. 1 cornerback. With some great offseason additions and the presence of Rolle in the defensive backfield, the Cardinals DST is a unit to watch.

Tough luck for Cards DST
News: The Cardinals defense did not allow an offensive touchdown by the St. Louis Rams in Week 15, but a fumble recovery for touchdown by LB Leonard Little does count against the shutout for Arizona's defense/special teams unit.
Analysis: The Cardinals allowed no virtually no offense by the Rams, holding them to 22 total rushing yards and 185 net yards. The Rams also had only 12 first downs. They are still not a recommended option in most Fantasy leagues for Week 16 at Seattle.
