News: The Steelers drafted only three defenders in the NFL Draft: Miami (Fla.) linebacker Sean Spence, Washington defensive tackle Alameda Ta'amu and Texas A&M cornerback Terrence Frederick. Spence should work on special teams right away and provide depth at inside linebacker while Ta'amu will get used as part of their D-line rotation. Frederick should also contribute on special teams and potentially begin the year as the team's fourth cornerback. These additions are the only ones made by the Steelers this offseason; defensive end Aaron Smith retired, cornerback William Gay left via free agency and linebacker James Farrior and cornerback Bryant McFadden were released.
Analysis: Fortunately for the Steelers, they already have plenty of talent on defense, so these losses might sting but not get them ripped apart. The defense is coming back mostly intact, for better or worse, and that could mean that the unit produces about as well as it did last season. That's good but not great. Is the Steelers DST still worth drafting? Sure, but don't be the Black & Gold towel-waver who takes them a few rounds too soon. The last or second-to-last round is the right time to draft them.
News: The stout Pittsburgh defense picked the wrong time to crumble as the unit allowed a whopping 447 total yards during a 29-23 loss at Denver in the AFC Wild Card Playoff on Sunday. The Steelers allowed only 14.2 points per game during the season, with four their last five opponents failing to score 10. Pittsburgh also yielded 281.8 yards per game as the NFL's top-ranked defense, but nearly surrendered that amount in the second quarter alone as the Broncos out-gained the Steelers 225-51 and scored 20 points for a 20-6 lead.
Analysis: With leading tackler DB Ryan Clark out for the game because of a blood condition that's exacerbated at altitude, Pittsburgh struggled to contain the surprising Broncos. The Steelers allowed just two receivers to collect more than 90 yards in receptions in the regular season, but were burned for 204 yards on four catches by Demaryius Thomas. Pittsburgh also failed to register a sack on QB Tim Tebow, just the fourth time that has happened this year. Still, Fantasy owners should continue to view the Steelers as a No. 1 Fantasy DST for 2012.
News: The Steelers DST came up with the victory at Cleveland in the regular-season finale Week 17 on Sunday. The Steelers DST held Cleveland to 240 total yards in the game and they withstood the Browns' comeback effort late in the game. The Steelers DST could only force Seneca Wallace into one turnover in the game, however, and managed just two sacks of Wallace in the game.
Analysis: The Steelers DST got the win on Sunday, but it wasn't their best performance on the year as a unit. That said, the team heads into the playoffs as one of the best Fantasy DST units available.
News: The Steelers DST heads into the Week 17 regular-season finale at Cleveland looking to keep their opponents under 10 points scored for the fifth time in the last six games. Only San Francisco has managed more against Pittsburgh since the Week 11 bye. In fact, Cleveland played against the Steelers DST Week 14 and scored just three points as the Steelers DST managed three turnovers forced and three sacks to record 15 Fantasy points.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has recorded double figures in Fantasy production in all but two games since Week 5 of the season. The unit has been one of the best around and that should only continue as the team needs a win heading into Week 17 in order to lock up the division title and possibly even gain the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC playoff picture. The Browns are a bumbling offense and the Steelers DST is one of the best defenses around. Consider the Steelers DST a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: The Steelers DST surrendered just 232 yards of total offense, while pitching a shutout against the Rams in Week 16. Pittsburgh was able to hold St. Louis to just 68 yards passing, with Kellen Clemens longest completion of the day going for just 17 yards. However, the Steelers did allow over 100 yards on the ground to Steven Jackson and failed to register a turnover in the 27-0 victory. However, the unit did record three sacks.
Analysis: Pittsburgh's defense played very well on Saturday afternoon, but failed to make any real big plays. The unit failed to force a turnover, but did get to the quarterback a few times. However, it is hard to complain when your DST pitches a shutout -- even if it is against the lowly Rams. Pittsburgh will look to end the regular season on a high note when the team heads out to Cleveland in Week 17. Consider the Steelers a No. 1 Fantasy DST against the Browns.
News: The Steelers DST should be licking its lips for the Week 16 matchup against St. Louis. The Steelers DST plays at home against the Rams, a team allowing the most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units on the season. St. Louis has been dismal offensively all season and the Steelers DST should dismantle them Week 16.
Analysis: The Steelers DST wasn't at its best last week at San Francisco and will look for retribution heading into the game against the Rams. Otherwise, the Steelers DST has been one of the top units in Fantasy this season while the Rams have been horrendous offensively. Fantasy owners should consider the Steelers DST perhaps the No. 1 overall Fantasy unit for Week 16.
News: The Steelers defense did a decent job of limiting the 49ers in Week 15 but they did not receive much help from their offense. Pittsburgh allowed just 287 yards of total offense in the 20-3 loss. San Francisco ran for 100 yards, led by RB Frank Gore (65 yards) and QB Alex Smith threw for 187 yards with a touchdown. The Steelers, who entered Monday night with 30 sacks on the year, could not bring down Smith once in the defeat.
Analysis: Even without LB James Harrison, who was serving a one-game suspension, the Steelers held their own on defense in Week 15 but San Francisco was given a short field a few times, which ended up being the difference in the game. There have been few times this season that Pittsburgh has not been able to record a sack or cause a turnover, and they should be able to get back on track with the lowly Rams up next on the schedule. With Harrison coming back in Week 16, continue to roll with the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Steelers will be going up against a 49ers team in Week 15 that they matchup very well against. San Francisco ranks seventh in the league in rushing, putting up nearly 127 yards per game, and 29th in passing. Pittsburgh ranks sixth in the league against the run and sports the best pass defense in the NFL, allowing just under 180 yards per contest. The Steelers have recorded 30 sacks thus far with 10 interceptions and two DST scores.
Analysis: The Steelers have allowed fewer than 10 points in each of their last three games and enter Monday night as hot as anyone in the league. Their swarming pass rush has been able to keep constant pressure on opposing QBs and their ball-hawking secondary has been able to shut down receivers. Pittsburgh should be able to shutdown the 49ers on offense in Week 15 so consider their DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Steelers defense got slapped in the mouth on the opening drive by the Browns on Thursday night. After a touchdown run by Colt McCoy was reversed, Pittsburgh held Cleveland to a field goal. Pittsburgh didn't allow another point to Cleveland after the opening drive though as they stepped up to the plate. After Pittsburgh's offense coughed up the ball Troy Polamalu picked off Colt McCoy giving the Steelers excellent field position. William Gay added another interception late in the game in the end zone, as he put an abrupt end to a potential scoring drive. Pittsburgh put a lot of pressure on McCoy, sacking him three times and even knocking him out for two plays.
Analysis: The Steelers were probably a bit shocked by the Browns opening drive in Week 14, but realized they needed this win. The Steelers get some extra time to get healthy on defense. They don't play again until Monday night in Week 15. Pittsburgh travels to take on San Francisco in that contest. Despite a tough matchup, Fantasy owners should view the Steelers DST as a viable option moving forward.
News: The Steelers DST and the unit's Fantasy owners get a nice little matchup for Week 14 on Thursday night. Pittsburgh hosts the Cleveland Browns and that gives them an excellent opportunity to hold their opponent under 10 points scored for the third straight game. The Steelers DST has kept Kansas City and Cincinnati under 10 points in the last two contests as neither team topped 252 yards and both committed multiple turnovers. The Browns make plenty of mistakes and haven't scored over 20 points in a game since Week 2 of the season against Indianapolis.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has recorded double-digit Fantasy scoring efforts in six of its last seven contests. They have forced multiple turnovers in four straight games and Antonio Brown returned a punt for a touchdown last week against the Bengals. The Steelers DST is playing very well right now and the Browns are ripe to give up loads of Fantasy points to the unit. Fantasy owners can consider the Steelers DST possibly the No. 1 overall Fantasy unit for Week 14.
News: In their Week 13 win, the Steelers DST held the Bengals to 7 points, sacked QB Andy Dalton three times, picked off QB Bruce Gradkowski once, recovered a fumble on special teams and benefited from an Antonio Brown 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Bengals totaled 232 yards.
Analysis: This was a great effort from the Steelers, who should be up for another one in Week 14 when the Browns come to town on Thursday. The Browns haven't topped 21 points in 11 of 12 games this season. The Steelers DST is a must-start for Week 14.
News: The Bengals come to Heinz Field in Week 13 in a classic AFC North showdown. The Steelers have won 12 of the last 16 meetings and have limited the Bengals in many of those wins. The Bengals are averaging 23.5 points and 334.6 total yards per game but are expected to throw plenty given Cedric Benson's tough matchup against the Pittsburgh run defense. These teams played in Cincinnati in Week 10 and the Bengals put up 17 points thanks to Andy Dalton's touchdown passes to A.J. Green and Jermaine Gresham. He also threw two interceptions but wasn't sacked once.
Analysis: Expect the Steelers to play a little better in Week 13, slamming on the run and being more prepared for the Bengals' passing attack. We consider the DST a startable unit.
News: The Steelers defense did a solid job limiting the Chiefs in Week 12. They held Kansas City to just 252 yards of total offense and picked off QB Tyler Palko three times in the 13-9 win. Ike Taylor and Ryan Mundy victimized Palko in the first half before Keenan Lewis intercepted him in the fourth quarter, which ended up clinching the victory. Pittsburgh recorded one sack in the contest and also forced a fumble. DB Troy Polamalu left the game in the first quarter due to a head injury and did not return. "We had some signature plays defensively down the stretch," coach Mile Tomlin said. "We know as we push into December football those are the kind of plays we are going to need to get out of stadiums with wins."
Analysis: The Steelers held Kansas City to just 90 yards rushing and 162 yards passing on Sunday night as they dominated the defensive side of the ball. They entered the contest with just four interceptions on the year and nearly doubled that stat by picking off Palko three times. Pittsburgh has some key injuries on defense so keep an eye on their status going forward to see if they will be able to return for the game against the Bengals next week. Either way, continue to roll with the Steelers as a No. 1 Fanatsy DST for Week 13.
News: The Steelers appear to have a favorable matchup in the Chiefs in Week 12. Kansas City ranks ninth in the league in rushing, putting up nearly 124 yards per game, but have the 28th-worst passing game, which will be led by Tyler Palko. Pittsburgh sports the sixth-best run defense in the NFL and rank third against the pass. The Steelers have recorded 23 sacks thus far with four interceptions and one DST touchdown.
Analysis: The Steelers have been banged up on defense in recent weeks but coming off the bye, they should be able to get some key pieces back on that side of the ball. Even if DB Troy Polamalu and LB LaMarr Woodley cannot return on Sundaynight, Pittsburgh should not have a problem slowing down Kansas City. The Chiefs were held to three points and 334 yards of total offense by the Patriots this past week, and owners know that New England does not have the stoutest of defenses. Considering the matchup, view the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 12.
News: The Steelers DST pulled a victory on Sunday of Week 10 at Cincinnati. The Steelers DST showed the Bengals what they're made of as the unit allowed just 279 yards of offense on the game in the 24-17 win. The Steelers DST forced two turnovers as QB Andy Dalton threw two interceptions. That said, the Steelers DST could not get to Dalton as the team finished with no sacks as a unit.
Analysis: The Steelers DST did a decent job at limiting points and yards in the Week 10 win, but the unit has underwhelmed in terms of Fantasy production in two straight games. Sunday was just the second time all season that the Steelers DST failed to record a sack. The Steelers DST is on bye Week 11 and returns Week 12 at Kansas City. The Steelers DST will be a No. 1 Fantasy unit against the Chiefs.
News: The Steelers rank near the top of the league in nearly every major defensive category, including yards against (third), pass defense (third), run defense (sixth) and points allowed (fifth). Which makes the number in the final statistical column -- takeaways -- so jarring. More than halfway through the season, a defense littered with Pro Bowlers and Defensive Players of the Year and coached by a Hall of Famer have just four takeaways. The total is the same number of takeaways by the woeful Dolphins, who have played one fewer game than the Steelers.
Analysis: At its current rate, Pittsburgh will finish with eight takeaways after creating 35 turnovers in 2010 on the way to the Super Bowl. The Baltimore Colts generated 11 turnovers in the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Washington Redskins set the full season record by taking it away 12 times in 2006. The Steelers will look to halt their pace of setting an NFL record during Week 10 at Cincinnati. However, the Bengals have turned the ball over just eight times this year, including one lost fumble. Consider Pittsburgh a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Sunday's game.
News: The Steelers defense had a hard time slowing down the Ravens' passing game in Week 9. Entering the contest with the league's best pass defense, they gave up 314 yards through the air in the 23-20 loss. Pittsburgh was able to limit Baltimore to just 52 yards on the ground, however, and sacked QB Joe Flacco three times.
Analysis: The Steelers allowed an opponent to reach 20 points for just the fourth time in nine games on Sunday as the Ravens have scored a combined 58 points against them so far this season. But other than that, Pittsburgh has been very stingy on defense, making them a potent option in Fantasy. They should be able to get back on track in Week 10 against the Bengals so continue to roll with the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: After losing 35-7 to the Ravens in the season opener, the Steelers will be looking for revenge when they face the division foe again in Week 9. Baltimore ranks 15th in the league in passing offense and 19th in rushing. Pittsburgh sports the NFL's best pass defense, limiting opponents to under 172 yards per game, and rank eighth against the run. The Steelers have recorded 20 sacks thus far with two interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Steelers gave up 385 yards of total offense against the Ravens earlier in the year including a 170 on the ground. But Pittsburgh has been playing better since their season opener beatdown, now allowing more than 20 points in any game since. Hopefully they will be able to keep Baltimore off the board on Sunday but they might be missing some key pieces on defense. Either way, the Steelers DST is too good to sit in the majority of formats so consider them a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: The Steelers held Patriots QB Tom Brady to 198 passing yards in Week 8, but Brady did have two touchdown passes. Pittsburgh also got the job done against the run as they gave up just 43 yards on the ground on Sunday. Pittsburgh sacked Brady three times and on the last play of the game caused a fumble that turned into a safety. The Steelers would hold off the Patriots, 25-17.
Analysis: The Steelers clamped down on the Patriots in Week 8 and have not allowed more than 20 points in a game since Week 1 of the season. Despite having a lot of linebackers dealing with injuries, the Steelers are still putting pressure on opposing team's quarterbacks. In Week 9 Pittsburgh hosts Baltimore, a team that has struggled offensively at times this year. The biggest task will be to contain RB Ray Rice. Fantasy owners should view the Steelers DST as a viable option for next Sunday.
News: Pittsburgh will try to keep New England QB Tom Brady under wraps on Sunday, but he's averaging 350.5 passing yards per game this year. Steelers safety Ryan Clark said when Brady gets too much time in the pocket he 'throws a party back there'. In past years. . ., [he] has had a ton of success against us," Clark said. "I think last year alone we busted four or five coverages. Guys were running scot free. Those things are on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Analysis: Pittsburgh's defense has stepped it up recently, but New England's offense is difficult to stop. The Steelers haven't allowed more than 20 points in a game since Week 1 of the season, but the Patriots average 30.8 points per contest. This Sunday will be a test for the Steelers DST, which is why Fantasy owners should view them as more of a high-end No. 2 option for Week 8.
News: The Steelers DST had a huge game in Week 7 in a win at Arizona. In a rematch of Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers DST held the Cardinals to 330 yards as they won 32-20. The Steelers DST forced a safety in the game when LaMarr Woodley, who had two sacks, forced Kevin Kolb to commit an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone in the third quarter. Pittsburgh only forced one turnover, however, and sacked Kolb twice. Both sacks for the Steelers came from Woodley.
Analysis: The Steelers DST had a couple big weeks, but was ultimately struggling for the unit everyone expected they'd be this year earlier in the season. However, the Steelers DST has come back from the dead the last two games with huge efforts against the Jaguars and Cardinals. The Steelers DST has been getting to the quarterback with ease and hasn't allowed more than 17 points in a game since Week 1 of the season. Fantasy owners can continue starting the Steelers DST in most formats for Week 8 against New England. Tom Brady has been committing some turnovers lately and Pittsburgh would love to take advantage of that.
News: The Steelers DST heads into Week 7 at Arizona following a pretty solid effort against the Jaguars last Sunday. Pittsburgh managed five sacks of Jacksonville QB Blaine Gabbert, and allowed fewer than 20 points -- 13 -- for the fifth consecutive game. The Cardinals' offense has afforded plenty of Fantasy points to opposing DST units this season. Arizona, coming off a bye, allowed gave up four sacks and four turnovers to the Vikings DST Week 5 with QB Kevin Kolb running the show.
Analysis: The Steelers DST, which should be at full strength Sunday with coach Mike Tomlin saying Tuesday he expects Troy Polamalu to be fine for the game, has mostly been a very solid unit once again this season. They have three efforts of double-digit Fantasy scoring in six games, and have been consistently good since struggling Week 1 at Baltimore. Pittsburgh has been getting to the quarterback, so Kolb better watch out. Fantasy owners can continue to start the Steelers DST as a No. 1 unit in all formats for the Week 7 game.
News: Despite earning its fourth win in its past five games, Pittsburgh's defense continues to be exposed on the ground. The Steelers yielded 133 rushing yards, but still managed a 17-13 victory over Jacksonville in Week 6 on Sunday. Pittsburgh allowed the Jaguars -- who entered the game last in the league in total offense and 31st in scoring -- to control the ball for long stretches as they failed to force any turnovers. "We didn't get off the field enough," said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, whose team was outscored 10-0 in the second half. Pittsburgh was without star DB Troy Polamalu for the Jaguars' final two drives of the game after he left in the fourth quarter with concussion-like symptoms.
Analysis: Entering this season, the Pittsburgh defense had permitted only one 100-yard rusher in a 50-game span. In six games this season, they have allowed two 100-yard performances, and Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 96 yards on Sunday. But the defense prevented a last-second touchdown and knocked down an end-zone pass to preserve the win. The Steelers also managed five sacks of rookie QB Blaine Gabbert in the game. Consider Pittsburgh a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 7 against inconsistent Arizona.
News: The Steelers DST enters Week 6 against Jacksonville having allowed the second-fewest yards per game in the NFL behind only Cincinnati as they give up just 282.8 yards per game. The DST is allowing an NFL-low 174 passing yards per contest. The Steelers DST has continued to be one of the top Fantasy units around, though the team has only forced four turnovers all season with just 10 sacks in five games. Five of those sacks came in the same contest in Week 2 against Seattle. Still, the Jaguars are not expected to put up much offense against the Steelers Week 6.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has been good, but could stand to force a few more turnovers. Jacksonville just gave up two turnovers and a defensive and special teams touchdown to the Bengals in Week 5. The Jaguars are giving up at least two sacks per game and the Steelers DST should take full advantage. We don't expect the Jaguars to score much in the game, so start the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy unit in all leagues and formats for Week 6.
News: The Steelers defense, which entered the game ranked 22nd against the run, limited RB Chris Johnson to 51 rushing yards in Week 5 and the Titans as a whole to 306 total yards. The Steelers also recorded three sacks, their second-most this season, and one interception. They gave up only 17 points, meaning they've given up an average of 12 points over their last four games.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has been a disappointment in Fantasy this season, but it came through in a big way in Week 5 even with star LB James Harrison out with a broken orbital bone. If it gets better at stopping the run, it can still get back to being a top Fantasy unit. Even now, it's worth starting just about every week in just about every league. With a favorable matchup Week 6 against the Jaguars, the Steelers DST should clearly be active in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Despite yielding the second-fewest yards in the NFL per game (277), Pittsburgh has struggled to stop opponents on the ground this season. The Steelers trail only Cincinnati (275.5) for total yards, but have permitted an uncharacteristic 119.5 rushing yards per contest -- 22nd in the league. Pittsburgh faces a tough challenge in Week 5 as Tennessee star RB Chris Johnson could feast on a defense that is giving up 4.8 yards per carry.
Analysis: Johnson could be in for a second straight successful game Sunday against the Steelers, who permitted only 3.0 yards per attempt in 2010. Pittsburgh will be without star LB James Harrison, who is out with a broken right-eye orbital bone. In his last game against the Titans, Harrison had two sacks and forced two fumbles. Still, Pittsburgh has piled up seven sacks this season and should be viewed as a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 5.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin revealed at his Tuesday press conference that LB James Harrison has been diagnosed with a fracture of his right orbital eye socket. He was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday and has been ruled out for Week 6 against the Titans. He is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
Analysis: Harrison's loss is a huge blow to the Steelers defense, a unit that has performed well below expectations already this season. The Steelers DST has struggled so far this season outside of Week 2 against the Seahawks. They should still be considered a No. 1 option in Week 5 against the Titans, but they are no longer a must-start Fantasy DST, especially given this significant loss.
News: The Steelers DST did nothing Sunday in Week 4 at Houston in a 17-10 loss. The Steelers had no sacks or turnovers in allowing 318 total yards (138 on the ground). On special teams, the Steelers had Antonio Brown as the leading punt returner with one for 33 yards. Brown also had two kickoff returns for 44 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has struggled so far this season outside of Week 2 against the Seahawks. They should still be considered a No. 1 option in Week 5 against the Titans, but they are no longer a must-start Fantasy DST. Hopefully they can turn things around against the Titans, but they need to be more proactive in forcing turnovers to be successful.
News: Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin expressed great concern this past week about the Steelers lack of turnovers and too many giveaways during the early part of the season. We are not doing a good enough job of protecting the ball, and we are not doing a good enough job of getting it," said Tomlin, whose team owns the league's worst turnover difference at minus-nine. "We are a blessed group to be sitting here 2-1 after being minus-nine after three games." Pittsburgh travels to Houston in Week 4 on Sunday.
Analysis: The Steelers are one of only two teams in the NFL to not record an interception (Denver) and have recovered just one fumble this year. An imposing defense has been the trademark for Pittsburgh in recent years, but the Steelers have already allowed two of the three teams they have faced to score at least 20 points. Pittsburgh will be facing a potent running game against the Texans, though it has permitted just 99.3 rushing yards per game this season. Consider the Steelers a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 4.
News: The Steelers defense did a solid job of limiting the Colts in Week 3. Pittsburgh allowed 144 yards of total offense, including just 97 on the ground, in the 23-20 win. The big play on defense came in the fourth quarter when after LB James Harrison sacked QB Curtis Painter and forced a fumble, DB Troy Polamalu scooped up the ball and took it 7 yards for the touchdown. The Steelers finished with one sack and zero interceptions in the victory.
Analysis: While the Steelers were not able to cause many turnovers on Sunday, they were able to limit the Colts offensively upheld their reputation as a tough run defense. The defensive touchdown also helps out Fantasy owners and it shouldn't be the last one for this defensive unit. Pittsburgh will be facing off against Houston and their potent offense in Week 4 so consider the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: After shutting out the Seahawks a week ago, the Steelers will be looking for similar success in Week 3 against the Colts. Indianapolis enters Sunday ranked 23rd and 27th in the league in rushing and passing, respectively, and have scored a total of 26 points through the first two games this season. Pittsburgh boasts the fifth-best passing defense and ranks 12th in the league against the run.
Analysis: Normally the Steelers would have their hands full with the Colts but since QB Peyton Manning is still out due to his neck injury, Pittsburgh should have few problems slowing down Kerry Collins. While Indianapolis has been able to run the ball a bit so far this season, they have not played a front-seven like the Steelers yet and should have a hard time moving the ball. The Colts have allowed an average of 17.5 Fantasy points to opposing DSTs thus far so consider the Steelers as a No. 1 option for Week 3.
News: The Steelers DST was dominant Sunday in Week 2 against the Seahawks. Pittsburgh won the game 24-0 and racked up five sacks. This marked the Steelers first shutout since the 2008 regular-season finale against Cleveland. It was their second consecutive shutout over Seattle, which in a Super Bowl XL rematch lost 21-0 at Heinz Field in 2007. In fact, the Seahawks have gone nine-plus quarters (including XL) without scoring on the Steelers. On special teams, the Steelers had four punt returns for 56 yards from Antonio Brown and one kickoff return from Brown for 23 yards.
Analysis: It's too bad the Seahawks don't play the Steelers more often because the Steelers DST obviously shines. We like the Steelers DST as a No. 1 option most weeks, and they should play well again in Week 3 at the Colts without Peyton Manning (neck).
News: It was an awful Week 1 all around for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in Baltimore. The Ravens dominated the Steelers en route to a 35-7 victory as the Steelers DST could not stop the Ravens rushing attack behind Ray Rice. Baltimore racked up 385 total yards of offense as they put up 35 points in the game. The Steelers DST couldn't come up with even one turnover and managed just one sack in the performance.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who drafted the Steelers DST as one of the first units off the board should be devastated after this Week 1 performance. Even against the rival Ravens, owners were expecting more from the defense at least. Heading into Week 2 against Seattle, however, you have to expect the Steelers DST to be out for blood. That is why we would continue rolling with them in all formats in Week 2.
News: The Steelers DST enters Week 1 in Baltimore with a tough defensive test ahead of them. The Ravens have a much better offense than from even a season ago, but the Steelers DST is coming off a season in which it was second in the league with 276.8 yards per game allowed and second in takeaway ratio at plus-17. The Steelers don't have any major injuries to worry about heading into the first week of the season.
Analysis: Fantasy owners have come to depend on the Steelers DST as a weekly option in Fantasy leagues. Don't let Week 1 of the 2011 season be any different. The Steelers DST is going to be one of the best around the NFL this season once again and should be active as a No. 1 option in all formats.
News: Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley signed his franchise tender, guaranteeing him a one-year salary of over $10 million. He'll be eligible for free agency again in 2012. Speculation is that the Steelers will now turn their attention to retaining CB Ike Taylor.
Analysis: There's no doubt that the Steelers DST will remain a hot commodity in Fantasy play, but should they be? In 2011 they are slated for matchups against the Colts, Texans, Patriots, Chiefs and two against the Ravens. Those offenses aren't slouches, and they'll have their hands full with the Jaguars, Titans, 49ers and Rams too (think of all the running backs). We'll never tell you to not draft the Steelers DST, but you might want to let someone else reach for them on Draft Day.
News: Buoyed by the NFL's top-ranked rush defense, Pittsburgh was able to effectively limit Green Bay to just 50 rushing yards during its matchup in Super Bowl XLV. It just forgot about stopping QB Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers allowed three passing touchdowns in a game for only the second time this season and suffered a 31-25 loss Sunday night. Pittsburgh surrendered 338 total yards against the Packers, the first time in its last eight games an opponent has reached 300 yards against the dominating defensive unit. Rodgers, who was named the Super Bowl MVP, shredded the overhwelmed secondary and completed passes to eight different receivers. "(Rodgers) didn't fold under the pressure," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "I thought we hit him some early and we got to him as the game went on but he showed his mettle, continued to throw the ball and continued to throw it accurately."
Analysis: Throughout the season, the Steelers' strong point has been a powerful defense -- until Sunday. Pittsburgh brought a heavy blitz against Rodgers but recorded just three sacks against the elusive quarterback. The Steelers also lost CB Bryant McFadden to an injury in the first quarter and struggled against the Packers' four- and five-receiver sets that stretched their secondary. Rodgers' three passing scores was only the fifth occasion the Steelers have allowed multiple touchdowns in a game this season. After allowing just 14.5 points per game during the regular season, Pittsburgh yielded at least 24 points in two of its three playoff games as teams took advantage of a weary defense. Still, the Steelers defense will remain one of the top units next season and should be considered one of the top three DST options in 2011 Fantasy drafts.
News: With another Super Bowl berth on the line, the Pittsburgh defense didn't relent when pushed in the fourth quarter of Sunday's AFC Championship game. The Steelers allowed 16 points in the second half but managed to hold on for a 24-19 victory over the Jets and earn their third trip to the Super Bowl in the last six seasons. Pittsburgh prevented New York from utilizing an effective ground game and allowed just 70 rushing yards while holding the Jets out of the end zone in the entire first half. "The effort today was indicative of our whole season," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "We have a close-knit group with great leadership. I'm excited for the guys and the organization. We're one step closer to our goal." Pittsburgh recorded two sacks on Jets QB Mark Sanchez but was held without an interception for the first time in four games.
Analysis: The Steelers showcased arguably the NFL's best defense and exacted revenge for a loss to the Jets in Week 15 of the regular season. New York RB Shonn Greene rushed for 52 yards to become only the fifth running back to top 50 yards against a powerful Pittsburgh defense. Perhaps the biggest indication of the Steelers' toughness came in the fourth quarter. Trailing 24-10, the Jets had first down at the Pittsburgh 2-yard line but the Steelers defense stopped two rushing attempts and a pair of Sanchez passes to uphold the score and seize momentum from upstart New York. Pittsburgh, which was the only team in the NFL to allow less than 1,000 rushing yards in the regular season, remains a solid option in Fantasy playoff leagues. Fantasy owners should also consider the Steelers a premier DST in 2011 Fantasy drafts, as well.
News: Longtime Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, who will turn 74 early next season, has already told reporters he plans to be on the sidelines for another year in Pittsburgh. When asked after practice Thursday if he had any plans of retiring after the playoffs, he said "No." The Steelers sport the NFL'best scoring defense and shut down the run like no other unit. "He's a special man," coach Mike Tomlin said, "arguably the best in the world at what he does." They host the Jets in the AFC Championship game Sunday. "He's like a father figure to everybody," cornerback Ike Taylor said. "You won't find another guy who is coach LeBeau. A guy of his stature, knows defense in and out, pretty much made up the 'fire-zone blitz' packages. He's very laid-back, real cool, real collected. Usually, you see those guys and they have egos. There's not one cell in his body that has a bad ego. Very humble. You can go on and on about coach LeBeau."
Analysis: The Steelers DST is already widely-considered the best unit in the NFL, and now that they will get their ageless leader back in 2011, their Fantasy value should remain the same. Under LeBeau, Pittsburgh has never finished outside of the top-10 defenses in the NFL. They are already the best defense in Fantasy Playoff Challenges, and the Steelers DST should keep that status heading into next season. Draft them as a No. 1 option, well ahead of most DST units.
News: Facing a 14-point deficit at halftime of its AFC Divisional matchup, the Pittsburgh defense knew it could not allow the Baltimore lead to grow in the second half. The Steelers not only prevented another touchdown after halftime, but they completed an impressive rally to stun the Ravens 31-24 and advance to their fourth AFC title game in seven years. The Pittsburgh defense dominated in the second half, holding Baltimore to just 27 yards and two first downs and racked up four sacks on Ravens QB Joe Flacco. "It was a typical Steelers-Ravens game -- very physical and intense," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "We dug ourselves a big hole early, but we came out in the second half and made some big plays, forced turnovers and took control of the game."
Analysis: Tomlin's team displayed a completely different mindset in the second half and avoided a loss in its first game of the postseason. The Steelers harassed Flacco throughout the half and forced the third-year quarterback into a costly interception to DB Ryan Clark that resulted in a game-tying touchdown three plays later. Baltimore also finished with just 126 total yards, the fourth opponent Pittsburgh has held under 200 yards in a game this season. Fantasy owners should continue to view the Steelers as an elite DST option in all playoff leagues and in 2011 Fantasy drafts.
News: The Steelers DST got an early interception from DB Troy Polamalu in Week 17 against the Browns and never looked back in a 41-9 win. Pittsburgh held Cleveland to 225 yards, sacked Colt McCoy four times and forced him into throwing three interceptions.
Analysis: The Steelers finished 2010 as the best defensive unit in Fantasy play by a long way, and they should continue to thrive again in 2011, especially as half of their division will likely be pretty weak again. Draft them as a No. 1 option, well ahead of most DST units outside of the Jets.
News: The Steelers visit Cleveland in Week 17 and Fantasy owners with the Pittsburgh DST will be licking their lips at this matchup. Earlier this season against the Browns, the Steelers held the Browns without a touchdown until the fourth quarter, sacked QB Colt McCoy five times and picked him off twice. Pittsburgh also recovered a fumble on a punt return.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has been the No. 1 unit in standard Fantasy leagues by a long way this season after struggling a bit in 2009. They shouldn't have too much trouble with the Browns on Sunday, especially as there is still something for Pittsburgh to play for. Continue to use them in all formats as an elite unit.
News: Entering its Week 16 matchup against Carolina, the Pittsburgh defense's only concern was limiting the NFL's hottest running back in Jonathan Stewart. The Steelers didn't need to fret too much about him as they limited the visiting Panthers to 119 total yards and rolled to a 27-3 victory Thursday night. Stewart, who led the league with 415 rushing yards in the last four weeks, was limited to just 71 yards on 18 carries Thursday. It was the second-highest yardage total Pittsburgh has allowed to a running back this season (BenJarvus Green-Ellis, 87) but the defense kept Stewart out of the end zone as Carolina became the Steelers' seventh opponent in a row to not register a rushing touchdown. Pittsburgh also held an opponent to fewer than 10 points for the fourth time this season and third in its last six games.
Analysis: Even with safety Troy Polamalu out with an ankle injury, Carolina appeared over-matched by a debilitating Steelers defense that allowed just seven first downs the entire game. Pittsburgh's intense pressure overwhelmed Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen as the Steelers recorded four sacks on the rookie and forced him into his second-lowest completion percentage of the season (minimum 10 attempts) at 43.5 percent. Pittsburgh forced a whopping eight punts as Carolina also finished three drives with negative totals in net yardage. In fact, the Panthers only ran five plays within the red zone and never advanced the ball closer than the Steelers' 7-yard line. Pittsburgh's DST remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues for its Week 17 matchup against Cleveland, which was limited to just 10 points in the teams' first meeting this season.
News: Without S Troy Polamalu (ankle) last week, the Steelers defense gave up the most amount of points in over a month. That was against the Jets, but things should be a bit easier against the Panthers in Week 16. Polamalu is again out, but Carolina comes into the game with rookie QB Jimmy Clausen at the helm leading the NFL's worst offense. They average just 266.1 yards per game. Pittsburgh lies in the top-3 in total defense, and remains the league's top unit against the run. The ranking should be tested by RB Jonathan Stewart. He has posted back to back 100-yard rushing games, something the Steelers have not allowed all season long.
Analysis: All signs point to a convincing Steelers victory on Thursday night, but stranger things have happened in the NFL. Still, the weather will be chilly at Heinz Field and Pittsburgh is playing for the post-season while Carolina is rebuilding. The loss of Polamalu is a big one, but we see the Steelers getting the job done without him in a practical must-win game with the Ravens tied with them at 10-4 for the division lead. Utilize the Steelers DST as a must-start Fantasy unit heading into Thursday night's matchup.
News: Pittsburgh faced a New York team that hadn't scored an offensive touchdown in 12 quarters in Week 15. But before they got a chance to take the field, Jets WR Brad Smith would return the opening kickfoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The Steelers entered the game allowing a league-best 60.1 rushing yards per game. Not only did they allow QB Mark Sanchez to score a rushing touchdown, but they would allow a season-high 106 yards on the ground to New York. Pittsburgh was without Troy Polamalu though, which hurt the Steelers. When Polamalu plays Pittsburgh allows 3.1 yards per carry, compared to 4.2 yards when he's out. The Jets would average 3.9 yards per attempt in Week 15. The Steelers would not force a turnover and sack Sanchez just once in their 22-17 loss.
Analysis: New York became the second team this year to rush for more than 80 yards on Pittsburgh; the other team was New England. Now Pittsburgh looks ahead to Carolina, their opponent in Week 16. The Steelers host the Panthers on Thursday, so the short week could make it difficult for Polamalu to return. But against a Panthers team that gains an NFL-worst 266.1 total yards of offense per game, the Steelers DST should be viewed as a No. 1 option for Week 16.
News: Pittsburgh hosts New York in Week 15, a team that has been averaging 350.7 total yards of offense per game this season. The Jets boast one of the best running attacks in the NFL -- averaging 143.7 yards per contest. The Steelers defense is allowing a league-low 60.1 rushing yards per game this season. The Jets have struggled to score the last two games -- totaling just nine points off field goals.
Analysis: Pittsburgh can stuff the run and put pressure on the quarterback. The Steelers have allowed just 14 passing touchdowns, made 17 interceptions and sacked the quarterback 39 times -- tied for best in the NFL. With the Jets struggling, the game at home and the Steelers defense just being nasty, Fantasy owners should view them as a clear-cut No. 1 DST option for Week 15.
News: The Steelers DST racked up the Fantasy points in a Week 14 defeat of Cincinnati. Pittsburgh made three interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, and held the Bengals to seven points and 190 total yards. They also picked up a hat trick of sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers are now the top-ranked DST unit in standard scoring leagues, having jumped the Bears and Packers on Sunday. Even with Troy Polamalu on one leg for a while in this game, the Bengals couldn't do a whole lot of anything, especially on the ground. In Week 15, the Steelers have another great matchup against the Jets, who have really struggled offensively over the last couple of weeks and have a QB who throws the ball to the opposition quite a bit. The Steelers DST remains a must-start Fantasy option in all formats.
News: When the Steelers and Ravens met in Week 4, Pittsburgh's defense gave up the big-play of the game and ended up losing to Baltimore. In Week 13, it was the same defense that made the big play to propel the Steelers to victory when S Troy Polamalu sacked QB Joe Flacco in the fourth quarter and forced a fumble in the process. The Steelers recovered the ball and scored the game-winning touchdown on the ensuing possession. Troy's a great player, and a lot of guys would go in there and sack the quarterback," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He sees the game a little differently, and that's what makes him special. The Steelers held the Ravens to 10 points and 269 total yards on Sunday night. They got to Flacco four times in the win.
Analysis: The Ravens came out of the gate on fire in the passing game. They completed two passing plays over 60 yards in the first half, one to Anquan Boldin -- who also caught a TD pass -- and the other to Dante Stallworth. But in the second half, they held the Ravens to just 96 total yards and two field goals, plus they created the teams only turnover when it counted most. Versatille RB Ray Rice was limited to just 50 total yards. In Week 14, the team will look for a repeat effort against another AFC North foe, the Bengals. Cincinnati racked up 30 points and 311 yards on Sunday against the Saints. Consider the Steelers DST to be a must-start Fantasy option as usual.
News: As usual, The Steelers are sporting a top-five NFL defense overall and the No. 3 Fantasy unit through 12 weeks. In Week 13, the team will take on the somewhat-surprising Ravens offense, ranked 14th in the league and just one spot behind the explosive Patriots. Still, when these two teams meet, offensive explosion seems to be a quality that is checked at the door. Usually the running game is pivotal in these matchups, so containing RBs Ray Rice and Willis McGahee will be a priority for the Steelers. Rice has averaged 62.3 rushing yards per game against the Steelers, which is the most by any running back since 2008. Rice has also averaged 120.3 yards per game since the start of last season, second in the league behind Tennessee RB Chris Johnson (132.9). Rice had just 39 total yards when the two teams met in Week 4, but the Ravens had 320 as a team.
Analysis: Although stopping the run is the first order of business on Sunday night, the phase that ultimately cost Pittsburgh the Week 4 game was the pass defense. Joe Flacco threw for 256 yards, 18 on a TD pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the final minute to lift the Ravens to victory. The Steelers rank just 22nd against the pass, so the Ravens will likely try to exploit the DBs once again. Because of the familiarity between the two teams and the recent suspect-play of the team's pass defense, we like the Steelers DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Sunday night's matchup.
News: The Steelers DST held the Bills to 16 points and 329 yards in a Week 12 overtime victory. They forced two turnovers and sacked QB Ryan Fitzpatrick twice.
Analysis: This wasn't a particularly dominating performance from the Steelers, but they did enough to put up 10 points in standard Fantasy leagues, which isn't too bad. In Week 13, Pittsburgh will get a stiff test against Joe Flacco, Ray Rice and the Ravens. Earlier this season, Baltimore won this meeting 17-14. The Steelers DST should remain active in all formats for this matchup.
News: The Steelers DST was dominant in a 35-3 win over the Raiders in Week 11. Pittsburgh forced Oakland to bench starter Jason Campbell as they limited the Raiders to just 182 total yards of offense and three points in the game. The Steelers DST forced three turnovers as Campbell and replacement Bruce Gradkowski each threw an interception and Louis Murphy fumbled. Pittsburgh managed six sacks of the two quarterbacks.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has been a great unit all season and the six sacks ties a season high. They were tested by the Patriots Week 10 but came back with a vengeance against the Raiders. The solid play will continue Week 12 at Buffalo. The Steelers DST could be considered perhaps the top overall unit for the Week 12 game.
News: The Steelers defense, which has allowed 272.6 passing yards per game since Oct. 17 -- sixth most in the league -- will look to bounce back Week 11 against the Raiders after a 33-point, 453-yard drubbing by the Patriots last week. "We did take a hit. No excuses," cornerback Ike Taylor said. "We have to come back and do what we need to do, feed off of this and make sure it doesn't happen again." The Steelers will be facing a Raiders offense that has begun to hit its stride with Jason Campbell back under center. Campbell has thrown five touchdowns and one pick while posting a 104.3 passer rating during the team's three-game winning streak.
Analysis: The Steelers still rank first against the run by a good margin, allowing just 63.2 yards per game, which should work to their advantage against a team that relies heavily on RB Darren McFadden. For all of Campbell's good work recently, he's still more of a caretaker than a playmaker and could be forced into some sloppy mistakes without a strong running game at his disposal. The chances of the Steelers DST bouncing back this week against a still-emerging offense are pretty high, so stick with it as a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: Coming into the Week 10 game against the Patriots, the Steelers had the No. 4 overall defense (298.2 ypg) and had not allowed a team to reach the century mark on the ground, as a part of their top-ranked unit against the run. In the Sunday night blowout loss to New England, the Steelers defense gave up a season-high 453 yards and 39 points to the Patriots. For the first time this season, Pittsburgh's defense gave up 100 yards rushing (103). "Give the Patriots credit," coach Mike Tomlin said. "They came out and made the plays they had to and we didn't. We didn't play typical Steeler football tonight and that's on us." Pittsburgh failed to create a turnover or register a sack.
Analysis: The dismantling was bad in any and every way for one of the NFL's best defensive units. The 39 points allowed is the most allowed by Pittsburgh in the history of Heinz Field. Patriots QB Tom Brady threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns in the blowout. The Steelers will look to get back on track defensively against the Raiders in Week 11, a team that had a bye in Week 10 and will be prepared for Pittsburgh. They have the NFL's 12th-ranked offense and score an average of 26.1 points per game, good for sixth in the league. Still, the Steelers have the potential to be a dominating unit and they should be viewed as a high-end Fantasy option heading into that matchup.
News: Although the Steelers sport the NFL's fourth ranked defense and the Patriots offense is the 20th-best unit, the Week 10 matchup between the two teams seems like it will be a tight one. "Coach (Bill) Belichick and company will always be well-prepared," coach Mike Tomlin said. "They will put together a good schematic plan. They will come in here ready to play." The Patriots still have one of the league's best in QB Tom Brady, who has thrown 14 touchdowns thus far in the season. They also deploy several receiving threats who contribute to every game out of the backfield, in the slot and at the tight end position.
Analysis: The Steelers need to look no further than their NFC North rival Cleveland Browns on how to contain the plethora of New England's weapons. In Week 9, the Browns not only held the Pats to 14 points, but they limited them to just 283 yards in a dominating performance. The Browns held RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis to just 14 yards on nine carries, something the Steelers could emulate since they sport the NFL's top ranking versus the run. As always, consider the Steelers DST to be a solid No.1 Fantasy unit heading into the Week 10 matchup.
News: The Steelers defense and special teams were stellar for the first three quarters in Week 9, but allowed the Bengals to get back into the game late. Pittsburgh allowed Cincinnati to score 14 fourth-quarter points but came of with a big stand when it mattered most. On fourth-and-5 with less than a minute left in the game, LB James Harrison separated WR Jordan Shipley from a pass that would have extended the game. The Steelers gave up 272 total yards to the Bengals on Monday night but were able to sack QB Carson Palmer four times and added an interception in the 27-21 win. DB William Gay also blocked a punt and LB LaMarr Woodley forced a fumble in the victory.
Analysis: The Steelers defense entered Week 9 with the No. 1 rush defense in the NFL and held RB Cedric Benson to just 54 yards rushing. Although they allowed Palmer to throw for 248 yards and two touchdowns, they were able to buckle down when it mattered the most. Pittsburgh scored 10 points off of turnovers on Monday night and blocked their first punt in two years. The Steelers will face off against the Patriots on Sunday night so continue to view their DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 10.
News: After surrendering 14 fourth-quarter points to the Saints in Week 8, the Steelers' defense will be looking for a more complete effort in Week 9 against the Bengals. Despite losing four straight games, Cincinnati still has plenty of weapons and is averaging 355.4 yards per game. However, Steelers' defense is ranked third, in terms of Fantasy points and have recorded 20 sacks and forced 19 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: Pittsburgh's defense held the Saints to just six points through the first three quarters last week, before Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes. Still, the unit was able to shut down the run and force a pair of turnovers in the loss. The Bengals offense can put points in a hurry, but have only been able to eclipse 20 points just once in the last six meetings against Pittsburgh. Consider the Steelers a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 9.
News: The Steelers defense had Pittsburgh in good shape after three quarters in the Week 8 loss to the Saints, but in the fourth, Drew Brees led New Orleans to two touchdown drives that put the game out of reach. Brees hit Marques Colston and Lance Moore to give the Saints a 20-10 lead that would end up being the final score. The Steelers did shut down the New Orleans rushing attack, holding the Saints to 30 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Ike Taylor intercepted Brees in the second quarter and Bryant McFadden strip-sacked him in the fourth, LaMarr Woodley recoverd. James Harrison also sacked Brees on the day. In all, the Steelers gave up 318 yards of offense in the loss.
Analysis: Pittsburgh held the Saints in check until Brees opened the game up when it counted most. Both touchdown passes were highly contested, but Brees fit the ball in each time. The league's best run defense did its job though, holding Saints runners to a combined 1.4 yards per carry average. The Steelers defense will try to put a complete game together in Week 9 against the Bengals on Monday night. Cincinnati's offense puts up more than 350 yards per game. Still, the Steelers defense remains a must-start Fantasy option heading into the matchup.
News: The Steelers uncharacteristically gave up 22 points and 313 yards to Miami in a Week 7 victory. They did hold the Dolphins to 64 yards rushing, which goes right along with their ranking as the NFL's top defense against the run. However, it's looking more likely that DE Ziggy Hood will make his first career start Sunday, replacing Aaron Smith (triceps) who is considered the key to Pittsburgh's run defense. "You have a guy like Aaron Smith who's been our anchor on defense for years, he's a guy you can't replace," LB James Farrior said. "It's going to be tough on Ziggy. He has big shoes to fill." Hood, the second year man out of Missouri, has just three tackles on the season. "I would love to start," Hood said. "You dream about the chance to go out there and do something."
Analysis: The Saints offense comes into Week 8 as the 7th best in the NFL, averaging 371.9 yards per game. Their running game found new life in Week 6 when Chris Ivory ran for 158 yards on just 15 carries. Still, their "O" runs through QB Drew Brees and the spread attack of the Saints. He is tied for the NFL lead with 14 TD passes. Most of his receiving threats are healthy (except Reggie Bush) and expect to play in Week 8. Although it will not be easy for the Steelers in both phases of defense, they remain a No. 1 Fantasy unit against New Orleans.
News: Steelers DE Aaron Smith had surgery to repair a torn triceps tendon in his left arm, and the team is holding out hope he could return late in the season. Such injuries typically are season-ending. The Steelers likely will wait and see how quickly Smith recovers before deciding whether to place him on the injured reserve list, which would end his season. The 34-year-old Smith missed the final 11 games of last season with a torn right rotator cuff. He also sat out the final three regular-season games and a playoff game during the 2007 season with a torn right biceps. Smith is considered a key to the Steelers' league-leading rushing defense.
Analysis: The Steelers will miss Smith if he's lost for the season, but the DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy option in all leagues. Even with a tough matchup in Week 8 at New Orleans continue to use the Steelers DST as a starting option.
News: The Steelers DST allowed 22 points and 313 yards to Miami in a Week 7 victory. Pittsburgh sacked QB Chad Henne only once and recovered a Brian Hartline fumble for their one turnover.
Analysis: This was only a five-point effort for Pittsburgh in standard CBSSports.com leagues, and their owners probably expected a little more out of their solid unit on Sunday. Still, the Steelers remain a must-start No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 8 at New Orleans, who turned the ball over a ton in Week 7 against Cleveland.
News: In Week 7, the Steelers DST will try to continue its solid start to the season when Pittsburgh heads down south to take on the Dolphins. Miami has given up an average of 31.7 points in its last three games and has yet to win at home this season.
Analysis: Pittsburgh is sixth in total defense this season, but did allow the Dolphins to put up 24 points and 303 yards when the two teams met in Week 17 last year. The Steelers will be without key DE Brett Keisel (hamstring) on Sunday, however that shouldn't stop you from continuing to start them in all Fantasy formats as a No. 1 option.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that starting DE Brett Keisel will not play Sunday in Miami because of a hamstring injury he suffered in a Week 6 win over the Browns.
Analysis: The Pittsburgh DST is No. 1 against the run this season, and Keisel is a big reason for that lofty ranking. While you should still consider the Steelers a must-start No .1 Fantasy option in Week 7, they might give up a few more yards on the ground and points because of this injury.
News: The Browns broke 300 yards of offense in QB Colt McCoy's first career start in Week 6, but the Steelers defense pressured McCoy all day and held Cleveland to two scoring drives in a 28-10 win. The Browns racked up 328 yards (258 passing), but didn't score a touchdown until the fourth quarter. McCoy was sacked five times in the game and picked off twice. Pittsburgh also recovered a fumble on a punt return by Cleveland.
Analysis: The Steelers defense was licking its chops all week anticipating McCoy's pro debut. McCoy held his own against a very good Pittsburgh defense, but he made some mistakes and the Steelers pounced. Veteran QB or rookie QB, the Steelers fear no one and remain one of the best defenses in the NFL. Rain or shine, Fantasy owners should always starts the Steelers DST. Pittsburgh plays Miami in Week 7.
News: The Steelers defense was relentless against their Week 6 opponent -- the Browns -- in 2009. Cleveland didn't score more than 14 points in two games against the Steelers and totaled just 27 points as it split the series. The Browns also totaled just 452 yards -- 197 which came on the road in Pittsburgh, where they will play in Week 6 this year.
Analysis: If the Browns thought they had it tough against the Steelers in 2009, then wait to they get a look at the 2010 edition. Pittsburgh is fourth in total defense (289.0 ypg) and first in scoring defense (12.5 ppg). No opponent has scored more than 17 points against Pittsburgh. It doesn't help Cleveland that its quarterback situation is also a mess. This is definitely a week to start the Steelers DST, but it's not like they have been a benchable option this season.
News: The Steelers allowed multiple touchdowns for the first time all season in Week 4 against the Ravens. They allowed just 17 points, a season high, and 320 yards of offense in a 17-14 loss. The Steelers forced two turnovers and sacked QB Joe Flacco once in the game. Coming into the game, the Steelers had allowed no more than 13 points in a game.
Analysis: The Steelers defense has been absolutely stifling through the first month of the season, but they weren't quite as productive in the box score with just the one sack and two turnovers against a very "safe" Ravens offense. The way this unit has been playing with a healthy Troy Polamalu so far this season, they remain a must-start in all formats. However, they will be on a bye in Week 5, so you'll have to look for alternatives. They will return in Week 5 against division-rival Cleveland. The Browns have managed 20 points just once in their first four weeks.
News: The Steelers will be up against a Ravens offense that hasn't gotten off to the greatest of starts this season. Through three games, Baltimore ranks 23rd in total offense. They've averaged just 14.6 points per game. Meanwhile, the Steelers defense has allowed the sixth fewest total yards and the fewest points in the NFL (33) through three games.
Analysis: The Ravens do have some big-play ability with Anquan Boldin in the mix. RB Ray Rice enters the game a bit banged up, however, and Baltimore's offense doesn't present much more of a challenge than the Falcons offense did in Week 1 and the Steelers held them to just nine points and 295 total yards in a game that went to overtime. The Steelers continue to be a turnover machine. an area that has troubled the Ravens early on this season. They've thrown five interceptions and have lost two fumbles. They do protect the quarterback well, however, having allowed just three sacks. The way the Steelers defense has been playing, you don't need us to tell you to start them in all formats for Week 4.
News: Pittsburgh's defense delivered another strong performance with Brett Keisel returning an interception 79 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown in a Week 3 win against the Bucs. Pittsburgh was so effective in a 38-13 win that Tampa Bay pulled starting QB Josh Freeman late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay didn't score a touchdown until the fourth quarter, booting two field goals in the first half. Tampa Bay totaled 303 yards, but the Steelers had four sacks and two takeaways (one interception).
Analysis: It is unbelievable how productive the Steelers defense is now that Troy Polamalu is healthy. He seems to be the most important piece to making that defense click. Pittsburgh is dominating opponents here in the early season and the Steelers DST remains an elite Fantasy option. Make sure to keep them active heading into Week 4 against the Ravens. That game could be a real defensive battle.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Pittsburgh's defense looks as dominating, if not more so, than the one that led the NFL nearly across the board during their most recent Super Bowl season in 2008. The Steelers have allowed just one touchdown in two games plus an overtime session, and that came when they played a prevent defense in the final minutes while ahead of Tennessee 19-3 in Week 2. They've yielded only 104 yards total rushing in those two games. They have eight takeaways in two games and six sacks. "We've got a chip on our shoulder this year because of how things went down last year with our five-game losing streak," said nose tackle Chris Hoke, who started for injured Casey Hampton. Next up for the Steelers in Week 3 are the Bucs.
Analysis: Last season, the Steelers lost five games in which their defense could not hold a fourth-quarter lead. They played without two of their stars, safety Troy Polamalu and end Aaron Smith, for 11 games apiece. Now that Polamalu is back, the Steelers defense is once again among the NFL's best. Tampa Bay ranks 24th in total offense (280.5 ypg) and 19th in scoring offense (18.5 ppg). It would be wise to start the Steelers DST in Fantasy Week 3.
News: The Steelers defense had an absolutely dominant showing in Week 2 at Tennessee, helping the team improve to 2-0 despite a very spotty offensive performance in each of the two games. The Steelers forced six turnovers (three interceptions, three fumbles) while allowing just 11 points and 238 yards. They managed four sacks. On special teams, they returned the opening kickoff for an 89-yard touchdown.
Analysis: The Steelers allowed just one late touchdown, the first touchdown against them in the first two games of the season after their dominant performance in Week 1 against Atlanta. With Troy Polamalu healthy and making plays, it seems Pittsburgh's defense goes from a very good defense to an elite unit and Fantasy owners in all formats should continue to reap the benefit. They'll be up against an unproven Buccaneers offense on the road in Week 3. We expect the unit to be active in all formats for that game.
News: The Steelers will be looking to keep their defensive momentum going in Week 2 at Tennessee after holding the Falcons to three field goals and 295 net yards of offense in Week 1. They will face a Titans team that is coming off a strong offensive performance in Week 1 when they scored 38 points and managed 345 total yards. The two teams faced each other last season in a Week 1 meeting with the Titans managing just 10 points, but 320 total yards of offense.
Analysis: Fantasy owners should not be too concerned about Tennessee's success in Week 1 as it came against the lowly Raiders. They will be hard pressed to have that type of success in Week 2 against a much better Steelers defense. However, they do possess one of the biggest threats in the league in Chris Johnson -- who can score on any play from anywhere on the field. The presence of Troy Polamalu, a major absence last season due to injury, should help to neutralize the running game (whether it be Johnson or Vince Young) and the passing game does not pose a significant threat for Pittsburgh. Continue to view the Steelers as a high-end No. 1 defensive unit for Week 2.
News: The return of a healthy Troy Polamalu proved to be beneficial for the Steelers defense, as Pittsburgh escaped with a 15-9 victory against the Falcons in Week 1. Polamalu, who missed most of last season due to injury, led a defense Sunday that didn't give up a touchdown and just 295 yards. Polamalu even had a key interception late in the fourth quarter. "I don't know what the quarterback was thinking, but when you see No. 43 [Polamalu], don't throw it his way," linebacker James Farrior said. "He's the best player I've ever played with." The Falcons bottled up RB Michael Turner, holding him to 42 rushing yards. Matt Bryant kicked just three field goals and the Steelers defense had two sacks of QB Matt Ryan. "I think for the most part we shut them down," lineman Brett Keisel said of a defense that has only three starters younger than 30. "Teams are going to test us. We're old and washed up and teams are going to see if we can still play."
Analysis: The Steelers surrendered averages of 23.3 points and 351.0 yards in their final six contests without Polamalu last season. Pittsburgh was having none of that in Week 1. Even Farrior is calling Polamalu one of the best players in the game. He is that important to this team's success. The Steelers are going to have an intimidating defense this season. Just ask Turner, whose longest run went 7 yards on Sunday. The Steelers DST is one of the best Fantasy options on the market. Pittsburgh is about to face a Titans team that scored 38 points in Week 1 against Oakland, but that was the Raiders' suspect defense. The Steelers are way better. Start the Steelers DST in all formats. The Titans totaled 320 yards and 10 points against Pittsburgh last season.
News: Plenty of opponents found facing the Steelers' injury-plagued defense to be less than intimidating down the stretch in 2009, when they surrendered averages of 23.3 points and 351.0 yards in their final six contests without safety Troy Polamalu and end Aaron Smith. Both are ready to go in Sunday's Week 1 opener against the Falcons, when Pittsburgh tries to win its eighth consecutive season opener. "Troy's the best at what he does," Smith said. "He's just a playmaker. It will be nice to have him out there, running around and doing crazy stuff."
Analysis: The Steelers defense had a fairly productive preseason, finishing second in the NFL in total defense (239.5 ypg) and sixth in scoring defense (15.2 ppg). It's scary to think how good defensive coordinator's Dick LeBeau's 3-4 defense can be with everyone healthy. The Steelers have a lot of talent on defense and can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 1. The Falcons have a lot of talent on offense as well, including QB Matt Ryan, WR Roddy White, TE Tony Gonzalez and RB Michael Turner, but to Pittsburgh's advantage is it gets to play at home, where they allowed 21.2 points per game in 2009.
News: After allowing just 24 points in two preseason games, the Broncos dropped 34 points on the Steelers during Sunday's game. Although, some of the damage wasn't the defense's fault. Denver got two scores off interceptions. Pittsburgh did hold Denver to just 268 total yards and 40 percent red-zone efficiency (2 for 5). Denver also went just 4 for 12 (25 percent) on third downs. Pittsburgh came into Sunday with the eighth best total defense (283.5 ypg) and fourth best scoring defense (12.0 ppg) in the preseason.
Analysis: The Steelers defense hasn't let us down in the preseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin always seems to put one of the league's best defenses on the field and Pittsburgh looks primed again to be a tough defense to crack in 2010. Fantasy owners tend to agree as the Steelers are the sixth most drafted DST in CBSSports.com leagues. Feel confident in drafting the Steelers DST as a No. 1 option.
News: While much of the focus this spring is on the player who will be missing when the season starts - suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger - the Steelers are encouraged by who is coming back. Defensive end Aaron Smith is returning after a long absence with a right rotator cuff injury, and strong safety Troy Polamalu (left knee) is practicing after playing only three full games last season.
Analysis: The Steelers are so enthused about having Polamalu and Smith back. Even if the offense is shaky early in the season as Roethlisberger serves his six-game suspension, their defense should allow them to be competitive if it returns to playing like it did in 2008. Both Smith and Polamalu should be fine to start the season, making the Steelers DST a low-end No. 1 option for 2010. Think late-round pick with them and nothing higher.
News: The Steelers re-signed safety Ryan Clark, keeping their secondary in tact. They also signed special-teams standout Antwaan Randle El. Clark is expected to retain his starting spot in the Steelers secondary while Randle El should work on kickoffs and punts.
Analysis: The Steelers defense is coming along with Clark and NT Casey Hampton back, and they've done a great job addressing their special teams with Randle El and Arnaz Battle pitching in. This unit remains a No. 1 Fantasy DST, though not as a top-of-the-line unit. Consider them with a late-round pick in drafts.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a deal with nose tackle Casey Hampton, who would have been a free agent this offseason had the two sides not agreed to a deal. ESPN first reported the agreement with Hampton, and Kevin Colbert, the team's director of football operations, confirmed it at the NFL Scouting Combine. ESPN reported the deal was for three-years and $21 million, including $11 million guaranteed. Hampton, a nine-year veteran, had 43 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks last season. Colbert said he hopes Hampton will spend the rest of his career with the Steelers.
Analysis: Hampton is a huge part of what the Steelers do defensively and is a huge part of their run defense. It's good that they have him for a while longer, and he should remain a big reason why the Steelers DST is strong against the run and worthy of a late-round pick in drafts.
News: The Steelers DST gave up 24 points and 303 yards to Miami in a Week 17 win, making three interceptions and tallying three sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers' pass defense was one of their biggest downfalls this season, and Miami made them look pretty normal at times. Two of the interceptions by Pittsburgh came as Miami tried to force things in the fourth quarter. The unit as a whole disappointed in 2009, but they will get leader Troy Polamalu back next season and the Steelers will be worth drafting in all leagues this summer.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu practiced in a limited role again on Friday and is listed as questionable for Week 17 at Miami. Polamalu has missed 10 full games and most of two others with a pair of left knee injuries. He hasn't played since Nov. 15 against Cincinnati because of a sprained posterior cruciate ligament.
Analysis: Even if he did play we're not sure he'd be healthy enough to help the Steelers. Consider the DST a low-end No. 1 unit against the Dolphins in Week 17.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu may not be ready to play Sunday in Miami. Polamalu, out for the last six games and most of a seventh with a left knee injury, began running in a straight line only Monday. He has yet to begun cutting, turning or twisting, moves needed to play in a game. The five-time Pro Bowl player will be limited if he practices, Tomlin said. "(Monday) was a positive step," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. "The door's not closed on him participating. ... He's just progressing, trying to get him ready, hopefully to play."
Analysis: We'd be stunned if Polamalu played in Week 17, and even if he did play we're not sure he'd be healthy enough to help the Steelers. Consider the DST a low-end No. 1 unit against the Dolphins in Week 17.
News: The Steelers DST had three turnovers Sunday against Baltimore with one interception and two fumble recoveries. They also added four sacks. Stefan Logan had four kickoff returns for 129 yards and one punt return for 17 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers DST should do well to close the season in Week 17 at Miami. Consider the Steelers a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu didn't practice again because of his injured left knee ligament and doesn't expect to play Sunday against Baltimore. Polamalu is "encouraged" by an MRI test on Tuesday, but he doesn't expect to practice this week. Because he has been out since mid-November, he anticipates needing a full week of practice before playing again. Polamalu has missed nine full games and most of two others with separate ligament injuries in his left knee. He hasn't played since the opening series against Cincinnati on Nov. 15. Last week, Polamalu said he hoped to return by Jan. 3, the Steelers' regular season-ending game in Miami.
Analysis: The Steelers' secondary has been rocked week after week and should be challenged again by the visiting Ravens in Week 16. Believe it or not, you might want to consider other DST choices before settling with the Steelers' unit in their upcoming matchup.
News: The Steelers had a weak defensive performance against the Packers in Week 15, allowing 36 points on 436 yards. They recorded only one sack and didn't force any turnovers.
Analysis: The Steelers DST was once a no-brainer Fantasy option, but it has allowed 390-plus yards in three of its last four games. You could still get away with starting it against the Ravens in Week 16, but if you have another DST with a can't-miss matchup, considering using it instead. The Steelers DST gave up 20 points and 393 yards to the Ravens in Week 12.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will miss a fifth consecutive game with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury that has been slower to heal than the team expected. Polamalu hopes to play in the Steelers' regular season finale Jan. 3 in Miami, but he could miss the rest of the season.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is only a decent option for their matchup against the potent Packers -- it's no surprise that their defense has struggled since Polamalu has been out. Consider other options with a good matchup before settling on the Steelers DST in Week 15.
News:Troy Polamalu hopes to play at least one more game this season, even though the slumping Steelers have only a slim chance of making the playoffs. Polamalu has missed eight games and most of two others with a pair of ligament injuries in his left knee. He hasn't played since the opening series against Cincinnati on Nov. 15 and probably won't play against Green Bay on Sunday. The five-time Pro Bowl safety said Monday he wants to return "at least" for the regular season finale at Miami on Jan. 3, even if the game is meaningless to Pittsburgh. "Why not?" said Polamalu, who is wearing a large, protective brace on the knee. "I'm a football player. I'm not a coach, I'm not a cheerleader. What I love to do is play football and be out there with my brothers. That's why. It's always been irrelevant for me whether or not we go to the Super Bowl or playoffs. It's something I enjoy."
Analysis: Asked last week what it would take to play again this season, Polamalu said, "A whole lot of healing (in the knee). A whole lot of prayers." The Steelers DST is only a decent option for their matchup against the potent Packers -- it's no surprise that their defense has struggled since Polamalu has been out. Consider other options with a good matchup before settling on the Steelers DST in Week 15.
News: The Steelers defense put together a solid performance Week 14 at Cleveland albeit in a losing effort. Browns QB Brady Quinn was held to only six completed passes in the game on 19 attempts, gaining 90 yards. The Steelers were less effective against the run, allowing 171 yards on 37 attempts. The Steelers defense allowed 13 points in the contest and did not create a turnover.
Analysis: The Steelers defense is no longer the feared unit it once was, but is still gets the job done more often than not. The weather conditions certainly helped the Steelers out on Thursday, but Fantasy owners would have liked to have seen the Steelers at least pull out one or two turnovers. The Steelers DST has 10 days to prepare for a potent Green Bay offense in Week 15. Despite a tough matchup, the Steelers DST remains a must-start Fantasy unit.
News: With the Pittsburgh Steelers fast running out of games and his left knee still not healed, star safety Troy Polamalu isn't certain if he will be back this season. Polamalu is hopeful of playing again, but he said Tuesday there is no definitive date for his return. Polamalu's latest injury, to his posterior cruciate ligament, was initially expected to be less severe than the anterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of the Steelers' second through fifth games. But he won't play Thursday night in Cleveland, the fourth consecutive game he's missed with his latest injury. The Steelers have 10 days off after Cleveland until their next game, and there is a chance the five-time Pro Bowl player could be ready to play Dec. 20 against Green Bay. However, Polamalu hasn't been cleared to practice, much less play.
Analysis: Asked what it will take for him to play again this season, Polamalu said, "A whole lot of feeling. A whole lot of prayers. God willing, hopefully, I'll be able to play. We'll see what the doctor says." That doesn't make it sound like he's close to returning. Keep him reserved for at least Week 14 and begin making plans to let him go if he's ruled done for the year. This is a major blow to the Steelers DST, too.
News: Steelers starting CB William Gay suffered a concussion vs. Oakland in Week 13 and is not expected to play against the Browns. Veteran Deshea Townsend will take Gay's place in the starting lineup. Additionally, safety Troy Polamalu hasn't resumed practicing and is expected to miss a fourth consecutive game - and his eighth this season - with a left knee injury.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is attractive because of their matchup against the Browns in Week 14, but their secondary just got trumped by the Raiders at home, so there's no lock that they'll hold off Brady Quinn & Co. Logic suggests they will, and since there might not be another strong DST option available to you, start them in all leagues.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers reached a new low for this season in the Week 13 as they managed to find a way to lose to the Oakland Raiders. The Steelers DST allowed Oakland's porous offense 396 total yards in the loss. The Steelers only managed two sacks on QB Bruce Gradkowski and both of those came from LaMarr Woodley. They did not force a single turnover in the game.
Analysis: When your DST allows three touchdown passes and almost 400 yards to Gradkowski and Oakland, that is when you know they are struggling. The Steelers defense is normally a solid unit but have definitely been weak in recent weeks. Playing at Cleveland in Week 14, we like them to rebound nicely, however.
News: The Steelers DST totaled five sacks and three forced fumbles at Baltimore in Week 12. They held the Ravens' passing offense to 289 yards with one score through the air but yielded 132 yards and a score on the ground. And one more positive: The Steelers did not allow a special-teams touchdown like they did in four of their last five games.
Analysis: The bad news is that the Steelers' defense has shown some holes in recent weeks. The good news is that they host the Raiders in Week 13. Definitely keep them active for what should be a solid showing against a terrible Oakland offense in their next matchup.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that safety Troy Polamalu (left knee) is "questionable, at best" for Week 12 at Baltimore. Polamalu has a knee sprain that is expected to keep him sidelined for another game or two. Tyrone Carter is expected to start in his place.
Analysis: The Steelers' defensive unit is still a must-start in Fantasy and that won't change for Week 12 against Baltimore, which hasn't been as prolific offensively as before.
News: The Steelers allowed 27 points in an overtime loss in Week 11 at Kansas Cit. They allowed 282 total net yards of offense and forced a turnover with four sacks in the game.
Analysis: Seven of the 27 points the Steelers gave up came on the opening kickoff, which was returned for a 97-yard score. The team didn't allow much on the ground and didn't give up huge numbers through the air either. Despite the upset loss, it actually wasn't a bad performance for a team that was without Troy Polamalu and likely will be for the next few weeks. The Steelers' defensive unit is still a must-start in Fantasy and that won't change for Week 12 against Baltimore.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu did not practice all week because of a left knee injury and will not play Sunday in Kansas City. He may miss the following week's game at Baltimore as well. Polamalu sat out the Steelers' second through fifth games with a ligament tear, only to injure the same knee during an 18-12 loss to Cincinnati last Sunday. Polamalu's latest injury is to a different ligament. He wore a heavy brace as he watched practice this week. Also, defensive end Travis Kirschke will sit out his third consecutive game with a torn left calf muscle. He had been filling in for Aaron Smith, who is out for the season with a torn right rotator cuff. Nick Eason will start again at left defensive end. Tyrone Carter will start at safety.
Analysis: The Steelers are still a desirable Fantasy option because they're playing a Chiefs team missing WR Dwayne Bowe (suspended) and with a terrible run game. Consider them a must-start option in all leagues.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is unlikely to play Sunday in Kansas City according to coach Mike Tomlin, who said he was "questionable at best" for Week 10. But the strong safety is not expected to be sidelined for a significant period of time after re-injuring his left knee against the Bengals. Tomlin said Polamalu sustained a sprain of his posterior cruciate ligament in the first quarter. The injury, Tomlin said, is not as serious as the medial collateral ligament sprain that Polamalu suffered in the Steelers' season opener.
Analysis: The Steelers DST should be fine without Polamalu against the Chiefs. Start them in all formats against the Chiefs, who will play the first of four games without WR Dwayne Bowe after he was suspended by the NFL on Tuesday.
News: The Steelers DST did little Sunday against the Bengals. They had only two sacks and no turnovers. Stefan Logan had two punt returns for 30 yards and five kickoff returns for 112 yards, and Mike Wallace added one kickoff return for 26 yards. The biggest thing for the Steelers was safety Troy Polamalu reinjured his left knee early in Sunday's game. Coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu was undergoing an MRI exam. Polamalu missed four games earlier with a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee before returning Oct. 18 against Cleveland. Polamalu apparently was injured tackling Cedric Benson during Cincinnati's opening possession, which ended with Shayne Graham's missed 51-yard field goal attempt. Polamalu could be seen flexing his knee after coming off the field, and he left for the locker room shortly after that.
Analysis: The Steelers DST should bounce back with a solid game in Week 11 at Kansas City. Consider the Steelers a No. 1 option against the lowly Chiefs even if Polamalu has to miss the game.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers entered Denver on Monday night down three defensive starters. Pittsburgh didn't miss a beat in the 28-10 win over the Broncos in Week 9. The Steelers DST held the Broncos to 242 yards in the game. The Steelers gained quick momentum in the 2nd quarter before halftime when Tyrone Carter intercepted QB Kyle Orton and took the ball 48 yards for a defensive touchdown. Carter would add another interception and Troy Polamalu would get one of his own. The Steelers intercepted Orton three times when he had not been picked by a defensive player all season before Week 9. The three picks were the only turnovers the Steelers forced in the game but they did sack Orton twice, with Brett Keisel getting both of those.
Analysis: The Steelers DST was phenomenal on Monday night on the road and down several starters. They are normally a No. 1 Fantasy DST unit for use in all leagues and that should easily continue for Week 10 against the Bengals.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers are missing three defensive starters for their game against Denver. Defensive end Travis Kirschke (calf), safety Ryan Clark (illness) and linebacker Lawrence Timmons (ankle) all were inactive. Clark is being held out as a precaution. The eight-year veteran nearly died after a game in the Mile High City two years ago because of a rare blood disorder that is aggravated by playing in high altitude.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is normally considered a No. 1 Fantasy unit and we have to continue to think that way against the Broncos in Week 9 despite the injuries. At this point, you don't have any replacement options anyway.
News: The thin air in Denver isn't as much of a concern to the Pittsburgh Steelers as their rapidly thinning defensive line. The Steelers (5-2) already were without defensive end Aaron Smith, a premier run-stopper who is out for the rest of the season with a torn right rotator cuff. Now they're missing his replacement, Travis Kirschke, who has a torn left calf muscle that could sideline him another couple of weeks. He was injured during a 27-17 victory over Minnesota on Oct. 25. One of the strengths of a Steelers defense that was the NFL's best the last two seasons is its depth, but that's all but vanished now that Smith and Kirschke are hurt. Now, the Steelers must depend on two rookies and a player who was cut last month. Welcome to the NFL, Ziggy Hood and Sunny Harris. Welcome back, Nick Eason. Hood, a first-round draft pick, won't start against the Broncos (6-1) on Monday night but is expected to get significant playing time because teams traditionally rotate linemen in Denver's high altitude. Eason, a former Broncos draft pick, will move from right defensive end, where he backs up Brett Keisel, to start at left defensive end. Harris is the other backup.
Analysis: Only a month ago, Eason was let go so the Steelers could activate an extra running back. Suddenly, he is starting on the defense that allows the fewest rushing yards in the NFL. "I was released the fourth game and the next thing you know I'm playing," Eason said Wednesday. "Now I'll be playing a lot more. My snaps have doubled in three weeks. It's amazing, but that's the life story in the NFL." Harris, a sixth-round draft pick, has a similar story. He was released after training camp only to re-sign two weeks ago after spending time on Carolina's practice squad. Because of the injuries, the Steelers must go into one of their biggest games of the season with only one experienced backup defensive lineman in nose tackle Chris Hoke, who plays behind Casey Hampton. Hoke can play defensive end, but it's likely he'll get more playing time than usual in the middle as Hampton takes some plays off. "We go through this every year," Keisel said. "Last year I was out for a few games and Aaron missed some games (in 2007). We have a lot of guys who know how to play." Because of that we still like the Steelers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: The Steelers DST totaled two touchdowns against the Vikings in Week 7, intercepting a tipped Brett Favre pass and returning it for a score and recovering a Favre fumble for a score. The Vikings had four sacks to go along with the interception and forced fumble.
Analysis: The Steelers are on bye in Week 8 and play in Week 9 at Denver. Consider their DST unit a decent enough starting option against the Broncos in their next matchup.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has returned to practice after sitting out two days to rest his still-healing left knee. He practiced Friday with the Steelers' starters and is planning to play Sunday against the unbeaten Vikings. The five-time Pro Bowl safety tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Week 1 against Tennessee but returned last Sunday to make an interception against Cleveland, although he said an additional week or two off would have helped the knee recover faster. After practicing Friday with a knee brace, Polamalu plans to try to wear it Sunday. He discarded the brace after going through pregame warmups before the Cleveland game, saying it restricted his running.
Analysis: Expect Polamalu to play, and expect him to be a key cog in what the team does defensively in Week 7. The DST should be usable in spite of the matchup with the Vikings offense. Get them active in all leagues.
News: The Steelers held the Browns to just 14 points and 197 yards of offense in Week 6 against Cleveland. They forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumble recoveries) and sacked the quarterback twice in the game. And in better news, the rotation of Steelers DEs Travis Kirschke (three tackles), Nick Eason (one tackle) and Ziggy Hood did a solid job replacing the injured Aaron Smith. "I don't think there was a noticeable difference without Smith," said LB James Harrison.
Analysis: This was to be expected with the Steelers offense getting back their biggest play-maker in Troy Polamalu (one interception in the game) and the Browns having such a weak defense. The Steelers will play a much more potent offense in Week 7 against Minnesota, but the Saints should be viewed as at least a low-end No. 1 option due to their ability to force turnovers and get to the quarterback.
News: Steelers DB Troy Polamalu was activated for Week 6 against Cleveland for the first time since suffering a knee injury in Week 1.
Analysis: Get Polamalu active in all leagues as he is one of the elite safeties in the NFL and should get right back to being a high-end IDP option. The Steelers defense gets a huge boost with his return.
News: Steelers S Troy Polamalu is back practicing without limits and will play this Sunday. He'll be wearing a brace on his left knee the rest of the season. Polamalu said missing four games was not all bad. "Quite honestly, not too bad. I really feel like I'm out there anyway. Of course, I want to play, but my role changed a bit, helping my guys on the sideline," he said.
Analysis: It appears safe to get Polamalu back in your active lineup. When healthy, he should be considered a solid start in all IDP leagues. His return will bolster the Steelers DST, which has a great matchup against the Browns.
News: Steelers DB Troy Polamalu (knee) was listed as full practice Wednesday. He has been out since hurting his knee in Week 1 against the Titans, and he will be listed as probable for Week 6 against Cleveland. Coach Mike Tomlin said he wants to see how Polamalu responds Thursday after going through a full day of work.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Polamalu and see how he does over the next two days of practice. When healthy, he should be considered a solid start in all IDP leagues. His return will bolster the Steelers DST, which has a great matchup against the Browns.
News: Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith has a right shoulder injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season. The team has placed him on injured reserve. Smith was injured Sunday in Detroit. Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and rookie Evander Hood will be used in his place.
Analysis: This will hurt the Steelers' run defense quite a bit as Smith is very good at taking down opponents. The replacement for Smith won't be as effective. Don't expect the Steelers DST to struggle in Week 6 against the Browns because of this, though, but it bears watching in the coming weeks if the Steelers don't properly replace him.
News: Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith has a right shoulder injury that coach Mike Tomlin says "potentially could be significant." Smith was injured Sunday in Detroit and was being evaluated Tuesday, and the Steelers are not yet certain how long he will be out. Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and rookie Evander Hood will be used in his place.
Analysis: This will hurt the Steelers' run defense a little bit as Smith is very good at taking down opponents who are near him. The replacement for Smith won't be as effective. Don't expect the Steelers DST to struggle in Week 6 against the Browns because of this, though, but it bears watching in the coming weeks if Smith is seriously hurt.
News: Pittsburgh defeated the Detroit Lions in Week 5 in a game that was probably closer than the Steelers would have wanted. The Steelers needed to stop a final drive by the Lions late in the game to win 28-20. The Steelers DST allowed 335 yards to Daunte Culpepper and Detroit but also put Culpepper on his back seven times in the game. Culpepper fumbled three times but the Steelers didn't recover any of them. They did force one turnover, however, on an interception from Ryan Clark.
Analysis: We thought that the Steelers' DST would absolutely dominate a Culpepper-led Lions team but outside of the seven sacks, they really didn't stop Detroit much. We figure they'll regroup and will likely get Troy Polamalu back in Week 6, too. Against another terrible offense at home, we think you should use the Steelers as a No. 1 DST Wee 6 against Cleveland.
News: Steelers SS Troy Polamalu is expected to practice on a limited basis Wednesday for the first time since tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Week 1 against Tennessee. Polamalu, a five-time Pro Bowl player, will wear a brace on the knee. He must show the Steelers' medical staff that he can stop and start and change directions before he plays again, but he has not been ruled out of Sunday's game at Detroit. "Troy's been doing well and progressing well," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. "Last week, he ran some in a straight line to pretty solid reviews. We'll take another step to see where he is. ... We'll get him back out there on the practice field and see how he responds to that."
Analysis: Obviously, Polamalu's return would be great for the Steelers. But they're playing the Lions in Week 5 -- sitting this DST simply is not an option against a Detroit offense that might start Daunte Culpepper at quarterback. We'll keep you posted on Polamalu.
News: The Steelers defense nabbed three sacks and a forced fumble in Week 4 vs. the Chargers, but the special teams coughed up a pair of fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown. LB James Harrison had two of the three sacks. The Steelers yielded over 250 yards passing to QB Philip Rivers but absolutely shut down the Chargers run game.
Analysis: Next up for the Steelers: A trip to Motown to face the Lions. It goes without saying that this unit is a must-start each week, but now you can count on a big game from them against the weakish Lions offense.
News: The Steelers had a decent defensive performance at Cincinnati in Week 3, allowing 23 points on 273 yards. They didn't get the big plays they normally get, recording just two sacks without any interceptions or fumbles.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is probably the best unit in Fantasy and one of the few you can trust regardless of matchup. It didn't get the big plays this week, but if you bench it Week 4 against the Chargers, you'll probably regret it.
News: The Steelers were typically solid on defense Week 2 at Chicago, allowing 17 points on 275 yards, but they didn't have many big plays. They recorded only one sack and didn't force any turnovers.
Analysis: If that counts as a "bad" performance for the Steelers DST, you know it's a dominant unit in Fantasy. It's the best, in fact, and one of the few you can start regardless of matchups. Keep it active for Week 3 at Cincinnati.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu doesn't need knee surgery and says "the best case scenario" is that he will be back in three to six weeks as expected. Polamalu tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Thursday's win over Tennessee on a blocked field goal during the second quarter. For now, Polamalu will rest and hope the ligament heals quickly -- he missed three weeks in 2007 with the same injury, a sprained left knee.
Analysis: Polamalu is a significant part of the Steelers' defense, and without him they are susceptible to the occasional big play by opposing teams. Still, you'll want to keep them active on a weekly basis for their other talented defenders. Start them at Chicago in Week 2.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers will wait until Monday to provide an update on the status of injured safety Troy Polamalu. Polamalu hurt his left knee late in the second quarter Thursday and did not return. He was diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament and the initial diagnosis indicated he would be out three to six weeks.
Analysis: Polamalu was reportedly scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday, but the team is playing this one close to the vest and we won't know more about the injury until Monday. The Steelers have not made a roster move and are not expected to. A player who could have benefited is safety Roy Lewis, who spent most of last season on the practice squad. Fantasy owners in IDP leagues should be prepared for a lengthy absence at the moment, but Fantasy owners who rely on the Steelers DST should feel confident that the team has enough weapons to remain an elite unit without Polamalu. The Steelers will face the Bears in Chicago in Week 2.
News: The Steelers defense played a big part in a 13-10 win against the Titans in Week 1. Pittsburgh allowed just one touchdown -- a 14-yard reception by Justin Gage in the second quarter -- and 320 yards. Tennessee, which featured running backs LenDale White and Chris Johnson, mustered up just 86 rushing yards. The Steelers came away with one sack of QB Kerry Collins and recovered one fumble. They also had one interception, a nice one-handed grab by All-Pro Troy Polamalu before he left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. Pittsburgh also lost linebacker LaMarr Woodley to leg cramps.
Analysis: While Pittsburgh did walk away with a win in Week 1, they now must move forward for a few weeks without Polamalu, who is out 3-6 weeks with a MCL sprain. He seemed to have signaled as he went to the locker room in the first half that the injury was not serious, but he did not escape without some damage. At least he didn't tear his ACL. The Steelers DST is still a solid Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Bears, but losing Polamalu is not an ideal situation.
News: Steelers linebacker James Harrison has reached terms on a $51.75 million, six-year contract that will make the NFL Defensive Player of the Year the second highest-paid player in franchise history. The contract set to be announced Tuesday will pay Harrison a guaranteed $20 million -- more than any other player in team history except Ben Roethlisberger.
Analysis: Harrison broke into the Steelers lineup in 2007 and had 8 1/2 sacks. He had a Steelers-record 16 sacks in 15 games last season, and his 100-yard interception return for a TD in the Super Bowl helped the Steelers beat Arizona. While there is some concern that Harrison will turn down his intensity after landing such a huge salary and guaranteed bonus, chances are the culture and teammates around him won't let that happen so easily. Harrison remains a key figure in the Steelers DST, which is considered the best Fantasy option available. They're worth a middle- to late-round pick in all drafts this summer.
News: In the Steelers' 27-23 win over the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the DST totaled an interception, a fumble and a touchdown courtesy of James Harrison's 100-yard interception-return to end the first half. The unit also collected two sacks, both by LaMarr Woodley.
Analysis: The Steelers DST ended the year strong, and they had a solid 2008 season. Racking up 51 sacks, 20 interceptions, a safety, three touchdowns and nine fumble recoveries while allowing just 3,796 offensive yards, the unit was top-ranked in standard-scoring leagues. With the unit expected to be back in full force, and still fairly young across the board, there's no reason to believe that they can't be effective again in 2009. Consider them the No. 1 DST available, worth a pick starting in Round 8 in drafts this summer.
News: Pittsburgh is going to the Super Bowl after beating back the Ravens 23-14 on Sunday in the AFC Championship game. The Steelers DST was stout, as usual, in allowing just 198 total yards of offense to the Ravens and forcing four turnovers. QB Joe Flacco threw three interceptions in one of his worst game in his young career and Troy Polamalu returned one of the picks for a 40-yard touchdown to put the icing on the cake in the 4th quarter. The Steelers also sacked Flacco three times with Lamar Woodley picking up two.
Analysis: The Steelers DST was its historically dominant self in 2008, racking up sacks week after week and ranking first in yards allowed. It'll again go as one of the top Fantasy options on Draft Day 2009. Don't hesitate to start it in Fantasy playoff formats for the Super Bowl as well.
News: Steelers All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu injured a calf before Sunday's divisional playoff victory over San Diego and will work only lightly during the first couple of days of practice for the AFC championship game vs. Baltimore. Polamalu played the entire game as the Steelers won 35-24, but had no interceptions and was limited to three tackles. The Steelers did not disclose Polamalu's injury until Tomlin's weekly news conference Tuesday. "We're at the point of the season where it's about getting ready to play and being at the very best you can be on game day," Tomlin said Tuesday. "If that means sacrificing a little physical preparation for him, we're willing to do that."
Analysis: Polamalu is a key cog in the Steelers defense, and chances are the wily safety will play against the Ravens in the Conference Championship. Obviously the Steelers DST is worth using in Fantasy play now and in 2009.
News: Against the visiting Chargers, the Steelers defense gave up 24 points on 290 yards in Sunday's Divisional Playoff game. It recorded four sacks and one interception and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Steelers DST was its historically dominant self in 2008, racking up sacks week after week and ranking first in yards allowed. It'll again go as one of the top Fantasy options on Draft Day 2009. Don't hesitate to start it in Fantasy playoff formats for the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens.
News: Pittsburgh picked up the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoff picture with a dominating 31-0 win over the Browns in Week 17. The Steelers DST pitched a shutout in their final regular season game and limited Cleveland to just 126 yards while forcing two turnovers. Both TOs were Bruce Gradkowski interceptions to Tyrone Carter -- one of which he returned for a 32-yard touchdown. The Steelers also sacked Gradkowski three times and played like the No. 1 defense that they are.
Analysis: The Steelers have one of, if not the, best defense in football and that is not going to change anytime soon. They are a must-start heading into playoff football and will be one of the first DSTs chosen in next year's Fantasy drafts. They have been absolutely spectacular this season as a unit with 51 sacks, 20 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns.
News: The Steelers allowed 323 yards of offense and 31 points in Week 16 at Tennessee. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Steelers had a disappointing output in perhaps the most important week of the Fantasy season. They did not get to QB Kerry Collins much and wound up with just the one sack in the game despite having a relatively healthy unit. The loss locks them into the No. 2 seed in the AFC and that means that the team will likely be resting its regulars in Week 17 against Cleveland. That makes them a risky unit for the final week of the season, but their scheme is productive enough, regardless of who plays, that they warrant use in most formats. They will be up against a Browns offense that was shutout by the Bengals in Week 16.
News: Steelers DB William Gay picked off Joe Flacco's pass in the end zone with :17 seconds left and Pittsburgh secured a 13-9 win over the Ravens Week 15. Pittsburgh trailed all game before taking the lead with :50 seconds remaining. Baltimore managed just 202 yards, including 90 through the air. Pittsburgh came away with two sacks and two interceptions.
Analysis: Troy Polamula and James Harrison dealt with injuries leading up to the Baltimore game, but both guys were able to go and give a huge boost to one of the NFL's best defenses. The Steelers DST has been a top Fantasy option all season and should remain active heading into Week 16 against the Titans it what could be another defensive battle.
News:Deshea Townsend scored on a 26-yard interception return with 1:40 remaining as the Pittsburgh Steelers scored their only two touchdowns 24 seconds apart to rally from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and deal the Dallas Cowboys a potentially damaging loss, winning 20-13 Week 14. Dallas managed just 289 yards, including 194 yards through the air. Pittsburgh came away with three sacks, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Dallas has one of the best passing games in the NFL, but they were no match for Pittsburgh in the cold elements. The Steelers have still not allowed more than 300 passing yards in a game and continue to flex their muscle as a top defensive team. Keep the Steelers DST active Week 15 against the Ravens.
News: With a five-sack, five-turnover performance at New England in Week 13, the Steelers DST has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher or a 300-yard game, and they have given up 10 or fewer points in four of their last five games. Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel went into Sunday's 33-10 loss to Pittsburgh off successive 400-yard passing games, yet managed only 169 yards while being intercepted twice. The Patriots were only 1-for-13 on third downs. "The defense, well, they were their usual selves," coach Mike Tomlin said. If only because the superlative has become the commonplace with Pittsburgh's defense. "It was unbelievable," Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "You get to the sidelines, put your coat on, your hat on and, all of a sudden, you're ready to go back on the field."
Analysis: Only the Colts have scored more than two touchdowns on a defense that is giving up the fewest yards rushing, passing and overall, and the fewest points in the NFL. No NFL defense has led the league in all three yardage categories since the 1991 Eagles, but that Philadelphia team did not lead in fewest points. "We want to be the No. 1 defense at the end of the year," safety Ryan Clark said. The Steelers DST is obviously a must-start in Fantasy regardless of matchup, so keep it active Week 14 even against the Cowboys.
News: Pittsburgh dominated Matt Cassel and the Patriots in Week 13 beating them 33-10 in New England. The Steelers DST allowed 267 yards and 10 points to the Patriots and limited Cassel to just 169 yards and two interceptions. The two picks were part of five Patriots turnovers forced by Pittsburgh. Lawrence Timmons intercepted a pass late in the game and narrowly missed returning it for a touchdown. He was caught at the one yard line and that set up the game's final TD by the Steelers' Gary Russell. Troy Polamalu also had a pick and James Harrison forced two fumbles in the game. Harrison also had two sacks as the Steelers stopped Cassel five times.
Analysis: The Steelers had five turnovers forced and five sacks against the Patriots. Add in the limited yardage they allowed and the low point total and this was nearly a perfect game for the Steelers DST. They are one of the best options in Fantasy and should be active in Week 14 against the Cowboys.
News: Steelers DL Brett Keisel could miss three games, including Week 13 at New England, with a sprained medial collateral ligament. Coach Mike Tomlin also doesn't know if cornerback Deshea Townsend (hamstring, doubtful) or cornerback Bryant McFadden (broken forearm, questionable) can play. Smith has missed six games due to persistent back pain and Tomlin said Tuesday he remains "status quo."
Analysis: Keisel is a key not only to stopping the run but mounting a pass rush, although Nick Eason and Travis Kirschke filled in effectively when Keisel missed most of four games with a calf injury. Really, the Steelers DST remains too dominant for any of these injuries to ruin its Fantasy appeal. You should probably keep it active even with the tough matchup against the Patriots.
News: The Steelers again had a dominant defensive performance Week 12, holding the hapless Bengals to 10 points on 208 yards. The Steelers also recorded a sack and an interception.
Analysis: The Steelers' 3-4 defensive scheme usually yields more sacks than one, so in a way, the Steelers DST actually disappointed from a Fantasy perspective. In fact, it has a total of five sacks over its last three games -- not so great. Still, any time a defense holds an offense to 208 yards, it had a successful day, and the Steelers defense does it routinely. Keep it active at New England in Week 13.
News: Steelers DB Deshea Townsend (hamstring) and DB Bryant McFadden (forearm) have both been ruled out for Week 12 vs. Cincinnati. The duo were also inactive Week 11 against the Chargers.
Analysis: McFadden and Townsend usually rotate at defensive back when healthy, but both players have marginal Fantasy value. Keep them reserved Week 12.
News: The Steelers allowed just 10 points in an 11-10 win over the Chargers in Week 11. The Steelers scored their points on three field goals and a safety in the second quarter when LB James Harrison sacked QB Philip Rivers and caused a fumble in the end zone. Pittsburgh forced two interceptions and sacked Rivers twice in the game.
Analysis: The Steelers also seemed to score a defensive touchdown on the last play of the game when Troy Polamalu recovered a lateral and ran it in for the score. But the play was reviewed and called a forward pass after a bit of confusion. Fantasy owners should continue to consider the Steelers defense as an elite Fantasy unit for Week 12 against Cincinnati.
News:Peyton Manning took advantage of Ben Roethlisberger's second costly interception to find Dominic Rhodes out of the backfield on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 3:04 remaining for Indianapolis' only lead, and the Colts came back in a virtual must-win game to beat the Steelers 24-20 on Sunday. The Steelers defense held Indianapolis to 290 yards, including 62 on the ground. But Manning threw three touchdowns and Pittsburgh got zero turnovers. They did manage two sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers defense still played a pretty good game despite the fact they were down LB LaMarr Woodley, who was out with a calf injury. They weren't the reason they lost Week 10. It's just Roethlisberger kept giving Indianapolis chances to win the game. Pittsburgh has one of the better defenses in the NFL and the Steelers DST is always a viable Fantasy option. Pittsburgh plays San Diego Week 11.
News: The Steelers defense, which didn't record a single sack against the Giants in Week 8, rebounded with seven sacks for the second time in three games Week 9 at Washington. It limited the Redskins to six points on 221 yards, recording two interceptions.
Analysis: The Steelers DST remains one of the top sack units in Fantasy even though it didn't show it in Week 8. Its dominance of the Redskins in Week 9 explains why you should keep it active at all times in Fantasy, even Week 10 against the Colts.
News: The Steelers defense gave up 21 points on 282 yards Week 8 against the Giants and recorded neither a sack nor an interception.
Analysis: The Steelers DST usually does a better job of getting sacks. In fact, it just had seven in its last game. As one of the premier units in Fantasy, it should remain active more often than not, but it has kind of an iffy matchup Week 9 at Washington. Still, treat it as a decent low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Steelers sacked Bengals QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and backup Jordan Palmer seven times in Week 7 at Pittsburgh. Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison had two sacks and James Farrior had the other. They allowed just 212 yard of total offense and 10 points. Woodley also recovered a fumble for the only turnover in the game.
Analysis: The Steelers defense continues to be one of the top units in all of football. They suffered a couple of setbacks when CB Bryant McFadden and S Troy Polamalu got hurt on the same play in the fourth quarter. McFadden suffered an arm injury and was expected to have tests. Polamalu lost his helmet while tackling Benson and was unsteady as he walked off the field. Neither returned. Even with those setbacks and even though they'll face a good Giants offense at home in Week 8, they remain a must-start Fantasy unit. Timmons, Woodley, Harrison and Farrior remain solid options in any IDP format.
News: The Steelers defense gave up 21 points at Jacksonville in Week 5, but it allowed only 213 yards. It also recorded three sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers DST has yet to allow 300 yards in a game this season, making it one of the elite units in Fantasy. It usually contributes a decent number of sacks too. The Steelers have a bye in Week 6, but you'll want their DST active for Week 7 at Cincinnati.
News: The Steelers defense continued to play well in a Week 4 victory over the Ravens, allowing 20 points on 243 yards. It also contributed a touchdown on a fumble recovery by LeMarr Woodley and finished with four sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers have plenty of playmakers on defense and should remain one of the best DSTs in Fantasy. Keep it active for Week 5 at Jacksonville.
News: After losing DE Brett Keisel for a number of weeks, the Steelers will be without injured nose tackle Casey Hampton for Monday night's home game against Baltimore. Hampton, a Pro Bowl defensive lineman the last four seasons and the key to the Steelers' run defense, has a strained groin.
Analysis: The Steelers should be able to make up for these injuries and still perform well. They have allowed just 38 points in three games and continue to be one of the most fearsome defensive units in the NFL. Consider the Steelers DST a No. 1 option going up against the Ravens and rookie QB Joe Flacco Week 4.
News: Even though the Steelers lost 15-6 Week 3 against the Eagles, their defense put on a pretty good showing. Philadelphia scored just one touchdown while totaling 260 yards, including 65 on the ground. Pittsburgh knocked out star RB Brian Westbrook with an ankle injury in the second quarter and he never returned. They even knocked QB Donovan McNabb out for part of a series in the third quarter with a chest injury. The Steelers got three sacks, one fumble recovery and two interceptions.
Analysis: The Steelers have allowed just 38 points in three games and continue to be one of the most fearful defensive units in the NFL. Consider the Steelers DST a viable Fantasy option going up against the Ravens and rookie QB Joe Flacco Week 4.
News: The Steelers defense limited the hosting Browns to only six points on 208 yards Week 2, but they had the help of the elements as the remnants of Hurricane Ike brought howling wind and steady rain. The Steelers also had two sacks and two interceptions.
Analysis: So far, the Steelers have dominated against the Texans and the Browns, but they might not have gotten a true test yet. They visit the Eagles, though, in Week 3, so consider them an iffy but still advisable start in Fantasy.
News: The Steelers DST was good for five sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble vs. Houston in Week 1. They beat Houston 38-17.
Analysis: The Steelers DST should face a tougher challenge at Cleveland in Week 2, but then again the Browns were whipped by the Cowboys in their season opener. Nonetheless, the Steelers DST is a must-start in Week 2.
News: The Steelers allowed just 10 points and 163 yards of total offense in Saturday's preseason game at Minnesota. They intercepted one of Gus Frerotte's passes and also picked up three sacks in the game.
Analysis: Week 3 of the preseason is usually considered a dress rehearsal because it's the only week in the preseason in which team's gameplan and keep their regulars in for any significant amount of time. But the Vikings were without their starting quarterback due to injury and Minnesota's offense isn't considered to be very tough outside of Adrian Peterson so Fantasy owners shouldn't read too much into this dominant performance. We still believe the Steelers are going to be a No. 1 Fantasy DST option, but currently have them ranked seventh overall.
News: Even when talented players leave, the Pittsburgh Steelers always seem to be stocked with quality linebackers. After three Pro Bowl appearances, Joey Porter was cut two years ago, and starter Clark Haggans left as a free agent after last season. Pittsburgh spent its top two picks in last year's draft on linebackers - Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley were Mike Tomlin's first selections as coach - and then drafted two more linebackers this year in third-rounder Bruce Davis and sixth-rounder Mike Humpal. That has created a logjam at the position with veterans Larry Foote, James Farrior and James Harrison returning as starters. "I think that's awesome," Tomlin said. "We've got a good group of guys working there. We've got some tough decisions to make at that position, not only in terms of who makes the team but in how we sort it out. Those are good problems to have."
Analysis: The Steelers certainly do have a nice problem as far as who gets the majority of the playing time at linebacker. They'll once again be stacked at the position and are considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST option.
News: Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton was placed on the physically unable to perform list Sunday after reporting to training camp overweight and failing to complete the Pittsburgh Steelers' annual run test. Hampton, listed at 325 pounds but apparently much heavier, lagged 30 yards behind defensive end Brett Keisel during one of eight 100-yard sprints. Hampton completed only five. "He's overweight and he's not conditioned enough to participate at this point," coach Mike Tomlin said. Star safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) was also placed on the physically unable to perform list, yet Polamalu still completed the running test. Polamalu was injured while working out on his own.
Analysis: Hampton has had an ongoing battle with his weight since being a first-round draft pick in 2001, yet has made the last three Pro Bowls and has played in the NFL's annual all-star game in four of the last five seasons. Hampton also was chosen as the team's co-most valuable player in 2005. Hampton's ability to stop the run is one of the keys to the Steelers' 3-4 defense. Asked when Hampton will be in good enough shape to practice, Tomlin said, "I'll determine that." The injury to Polamalu is not considered serious and he could be back on the practice field soon. We don't believe Pittsburgh will enter the 2008 season down Hampton and Polamalu, so consider the Steelers DST a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: LB Larry Foote has been the Steelers' starting inside linebacker the past four seasons, lining up next to James Farrior. During that time, he started all 64 games and led the team with 123 tackles in 2005, despite not playing in their dime defense on passing downs. Looming large behind him on the spring depth chart is Lawrence Timmons, the Steelers' first-round choice in 2007, the 15th overall pick and the first under Mike Tomlin's watch. The result of the competition going on at inside linebacker looks inevitable. "I don't think it's competition," Foote said after another spring practice. "I really think it's just a matter of time until they throw him in there, just because of the politics of the game -- and it looks like he can play." Foote won't give up his four-year hold on the job without a fight.
Analysis: It's feasible that ultimately Timmons could play another linebacker position. But right now, Timmons and Foote are in competition. For now, Foote has more Fantasy value heading into 2008, but that could change if Timmons starts.
News: The Steelers DST had another solid season in 2007, finishing with three defensive touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 40 sacks, 14 fumble recoveries and 25 forced fumbles. On special teams, Allen Rossum had 38 kickoff returns for a 23.3-yard average and one touchdown and 36 punt returns for a 6.4-yard average. The Steelers defense will return several solid players in 2008, including LB James Harrison, DB Troy Polamalu and LB James Farrior. Rookie LB LaMarr Woodley is expected to replace Clark Haggans, who will leave as a free agent.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is one of the best in the NFL and performed well under new head coach Mike Tomlin. Expect another good season in 2008 and consider them a No. 1 option. The same goes for the D and ST units, especially with Rossum playing well.
News: Resting many of their defensive starters in preparation for the playoffs, the Steelers allowed 27 points and 334 yards to the hosting Ravens and rookie QB Troy Smith in Week 17. They also recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble. The Steelers special teams, meanwhile, gained 133 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers DST fared well in 2007, even without star safety Troy Polamalu for much of the season. Its ability to rack up sacks while limiting yardage will make it a popular pick on Draft Day 2008 -- possibly the top defense overall.
News:Najeh Davenport, unexpectedly the Steelers' top RB with the playoffs only a week away, looked up in surprise when asked about resting Sunday in Baltimore. "I was under the impression I was playing the whole game," Davenport said Wednesday, after the Steelers practiced for the first time in a week. "That's something new to me." WR Hines Ward and DL Brett Keisel also said they're going into this game. Coach Mike Tomlin, however, is dropping hints some of his less-than-healthy regulars might get some time off, including QB Ben Roethlisberger (sprained ankle) and DB Troy Polamalu (knee). It seems unlikely Tomlin will sit down a majority of his starters, not with the Steelers already without two key injured regulars the rest of the way in running back Willie Parker (broken leg) and defensive end Aaron Smith (torn biceps).
Analysis: Keep an eye on Big Ben during the week, but it appears Davenport, Ward, Santonio Holmes, Heath Miller and the key players on defense will all play the majority of Sunday's game at Baltimore. Consider all these players good options for Week 17.
News: Pittsburgh overcame some shoddy defensive play in the first half to beat the St. Louis Rams 41-24 Week 16. St. Louis ran their offense at will in the first half against the Steelers and put 17 points on the board. However, Pittsburgh made the right adjustments in the second half and held St. Louis to seven points. Pittsburgh shut St. Louis out in the fourth quarter and even got a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ike Taylor late in the game. The Rams mustered up 316 total yards. The Steelers got two interceptions and one sack.
Analysis: It was an average outing for the Steelers DST. The touchdown helped gain some points back, but Pittsburgh allowed a lot of yards and points. They will be looking for a better effort Week 17 against the Ravens, who might start rookie QB Troy Smith for a second straight game. Consider the Steelers a viable Fantasy DST Week 17.
News: The Steelers DST had no sacks but one interception Sunday against the Jaguars. Najeh Davenport had two kickoff returns for 42 yards, and Allen Rossum had one punt return for 12 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers DST did not play well against the Jaguars but will bounce back in Week 16 at the Rams. Consider the Steelers a No. 1 option next week.
News: Steelers DB Troy Polamalu, who has missed three straight games with a sprained knee, practiced Wednesday should be ready to play in Week 15 when Pittsburgh hosts Jacksonville, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Analysis: The return of Polamalu is key news for the Steelers, as he will be needed on Sunday to help stop the Jacksonville running game, which ranks second in the league. Feel confident in starting Polamalu in all IDP leagues and of course, the Steelers defense is a must-start almost every week.
News: The Steelers DST did nothing on Sunday at New England. They did not record a sack or turnover against the Patriots. Allen Rossum had six kickoff returns for a 20.5-yard average. William Gay also lost a fumble for the Steelers on a punt return.
Analysis: The Steelers DST ran into the Patriots buzzsaw, so this was expected. Look for the Steelers to bounce back in Week 15 against the Jaguars. Consider the Steelers DST a low-end No. 1 option.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is likely to miss Pittsburgh's game Sunday at New England after sitting out practice for the second day in a row Friday because of a sprained knee. Polamalu, who has missed the Steelers' last two games, aggravated the injury during practice Wednesday and has been unable to practice since. The Steelers almost never allow players to play in a game when they are physically unable to practice on Friday.
Analysis: Polamalu's absence hurts the overall value of the Steelers DST, which is already not a strong option in Week 14 because of their matchup at New England. Consider Pittsburgh's blitzers a low-end No. 1 pick for this week.
News: The Steelers defense had a strong, but not dominant Week 13 against the Bengals, allowing only 10 points on 249 yards, but forcing only one sack and one turnover (on a fumble). The Steelers special teams, meanwhile, picked up 31 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers DST once again flashed its might -- this time against an above-average offense in the Carson Palmer-led Bengals. While it usually gets more sacks, you can't complain about the points or yardage it allowed. You might Week 14 at New England, though, as the Steelers face a Patriots offense performing at a legendary standard. For this one game alone, seek out another DST to use in Fantasy.
News: The Steelers defense pitched a shutout against the Dolphins in Week 12, aided by sloppy field conditions that forced a stalemate through all but the final few seconds of regulation. Slipping around on tattered, rain-battered turf, the Steelers recorded four sacks and recovered two fumbles. They allowed only 159 yards of offense. Their own special teams gained 59 yards.
Analysis: The Steelers, having one of the best defenses in the league already, faced a poor offense led by a rookie quarterback on the road in impossible playing conditions. Anything less than a shutout would've been a disappointment. The Steelers DST faces a challenge Week 13 against the Bengals, but you'll probably want to start it anyway unless you feel like you can blow a roster spot on a second DST.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that SS Troy Polamalu's sprained knee is unlikely to play vs. Miami in Week 12. Tyrone Carter is expected to take Polamalu's spot in the lineup.
Analysis: This definitely hurts the effectiveness of the Steelers defense, but they should still be strong at home against a really bad Miami offense. They remain a top-end No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Steelers entered Week 11 against the Jets with the top ranked defense in the NFL. They were allowing an average of 14 points per game. The Jets came into the matchup with the 23rd ranked offense and scoring about 17 points per game. The Jets jumped on the Steelers' defense early Week 11 with 10 points in the first quarter, and finished with 19 points and a win. The Steelers allowed 297 yards, including 117 on the ground to Thomas Jones. The Steelers hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher since Edgerrin James' 124-yard effort for Indianapolis in Week 12 of the 2005 season. That was a span of 35 games.
Analysis: The Steelers did have some success against the Jets. They came away with three sacks and one interception. It wasn't an awful day from the Steelers defense, but we expected more against an offense that struggled for consistency. The Steelers will look to get back on track Week 12 against the Dolphins and rookie QB John Beck, who will be making just his second start. You will want to start the Steelers DST.
News: Pittsburgh travels to East Meadowlands, N.J., to face the N.Y. Jets on Sunday in Week 11. The Jets have the 23rd-ranked offense (22nd through the air, 21st on the ground).
Analysis: The Steelers DST is our top-ranked unit in Fantasy for this coming week because of their matchup and their recent success. Start them in all formats. They are the top-ranked defense in both the passing and rushing games.
News: The Steelers DST only recovered one fumble Sunday against the Browns. They did not have a sack. Najeh Davenport had one kickoff return for 11 yards, and Allen Rossum had four kickoff returns for an 18.8-yard average and three punt returns for an 8.3-yard average.
Analysis: The Steelers DST will look to put up big stats in Week 11 at the Jets. Consider them a No. 1 option in all leagues.
News: The Steelers defense had a monster game against the visiting Ravens in Week 9, forcing four turnovers and limiting Baltimore to seven points on an almost laughable 104 yards of offense. The Steelers also had six sacks to go along with their three fumble recoveries and one interception. Their special teams gained 105 yards.
Analysis: The Ravens ... looked ... terrible. Absolutely terrible. No doubt, the Steelers have a great defense -- it entered the game ranked No. 1 in the league -- but the Ravens ineptitude on offense in part contributed to the monster game. We recommend keeping the Steelers DST active in Fantasy even when it faces a surprising Browns offense in Week 10.
News: The Steelers DST ranks No. 1 in total defense, with a fourth-ranked unit against both the pass and the run. They will host the Baltimore Ravens' 15th-ranked offensive unit on Monday night in Week 9.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is a must-start unit every week, and they should be able to control the Ravens' running game this week.
News: The Steelers DST had no sacks or interceptions and recovered a fumble Sunday against the Bengals. Allen Rossum had one punt return for 3 yards and three kickoff returns for a 23.7-yard average.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is worth using every week because of their potential to create turnovers and sacks. Consider them a No. 1 option in Week 9 against Baltimore.
News: The Steelers DST is ranked first in the NFL in total defense, including the third-best units in both the passing and rushing games. They have recorded 19 sacks (sixth in the league) and they've give up just one rushing touchdown all season. They'll travel to play Cincinnati's high-powered aerial attack in Week 8.
Analysis: Cincinnati has the fourth-best total offense (second in passing and 21st on the ground). They have only given up 10 sacks, but Carson Palmer has thrown nine interceptions. Despite the tough offense they'll face, start the Steelers DST in every Fantasy format.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers DST allowed 31 points in Week 7 at Denver, yielding 324 total net yards in the 31-28 loss. The Steelers also racked up two sacks and two interceptions, but they did not recover any fumbles. James Harrison led the way with nine solo tackles, including one sack and a quarterback hurry.
Analysis: The No. 2 passing defense in the NFL was dinged for three touchdown passes, including the first points allowed against the Steelers defense in the first half. The Steelers had allowed only five touchdowns all season, surrendered four on this night. They look to rebound in Week 8 at Cincinnati, so it doesn't get much easier.
News: The Broncos host Pittsburgh in Week 7. Denver ranks fifth in total offense (12th through the air and eighth on the ground) this season. They have only allowed six sacks all year.
Analysis: The Steelers DST ranks first in overall defense (second against the pass and fourth against the rush), and they have 17 sacks this year. They remain a must-start defense, despite the fact they are playing a pretty good offense this week.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (rib cartilage) and nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring), both of whom missed the Seattle game, expect to benefit from their week off. They could be ready to play at Denver in Week 7. "I would be able to play this week, I feel that good," Polamalu said. "If we played Denver this week, I'd be playing."
Analysis: Be sure to bench the Steelers DST in all Fantasy league play this week, and expect to start them in Week 7 and beyond.
News: Despite missing DB Troy Polamalu (abdomen) and DL Casey Hampton (hamstring) against Seattle, the Steelers DST had a shutout with three sacks and an interception. Allen Rossum had six punt returns for a 5.5-yard average.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is a No. 1 option and should be used in Week 7 at Denver following their bye in Week 6.
News: Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (abdomen) and DT Casey Hampton (hamstring) have been ruled out for Week 5 vs. Seattle. Neither of them practiced this week. CB Bryant McFadden (ankle) is also out.
Analysis: The Steelers defense is still a startable option, but without those two key defenders, expect the Seahawks to do a little better on offense. That includes an improved outlook for Shaun Alexander and Matt Hasselbeck.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review both report Friday that Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (abdomen) and DT Casey Hampton (hamstring) are questionable for Week 5 vs. Seattle. Neither of them practiced this week. CB Bryant McFadden (ankle) is out.
Analysis: Despite these injuries, the Steelers DST is still worth starting in all leagues. Keep them active for Week 5 play when they host the Seahawks.
News: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and nose tackle Casey Hampton, forced out of the Arizona game with injuries, are expected to play Sunday against Seattle. While Polamalu and Hampton couldn't finish the Steelers' 21-14 loss to the Cardinals, Tomlin did not initially list them when he reviewed the team's injuries at his weekly news conference. "We expect these guys to be OK," Tomlin said.
Analysis: The Steelers host the Seahawks in Week 5, which will be tough for the Steelers but not so tough that you should consider other options. Start them if you own them.
News: The Steelers surrendered 21 points on 301 yards Week 4 at the Cardinals. They also registered two sacks and recovered two fumbles. Their special teams gained 71 yards.
Analysis: An average performance from a normally strong defense. Keep the Steelers DST active Week 5 against the Seahawks unless you find an extremely favorable matchup on the waiver wire.
News: The Steelers DST currently ranks second in total defense and they'll take on the 17th-ranked scoring offense of the Cardinals in Arizona in Week 4.
Analysis: The Cardinals passing game ranks 13th, with 234 yards per game and only three interceptions thrown this year. The Steelers are second in the league in sacks, with 12, although Arizona has only allowed two. We still recommend Pittsburgh as a solid Fantasy DST because of the uncertainty of the QB situation in Arizona. The Steelers have allowed only 26 points total in three games this season -- which ranks first in the NFL.
News: The Steelers defense and special teams each scored a touchdown vs. San Francisco in Week 3, sacking Alex Smith twice and picking him off once. The Steelers held Frank Gore to 39 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Steelers DST continues to roll, and should remain a must-start unit when they play at Arizona in Week 4. They should make life tough for Edgerrin James.
News: New Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin has kept the Steelers defense intact, and it seems to be working. Pittsburgh is No. 3 in pass defense, No. 5 in run defense and has allowed only 10 points on the season. 49ers QB Alex Smith has yet to throw a touchdown pass this year.
Analysis: The Steelers are one of the league's elite defenses and face a pretty average offense in the 49ers on Sunday. They remain a must-start every week.
News: The last 100-yard rushing game against Pittsburgh was Edgerrin James' 124-yard effort for Indianapolis in a Monday night game on Nov. 28, 2005, or 27 games ago counting the playoffs. The regular-season streak is 23 games. Dating from Rudi Johnson's 123-yard game for Cincinnati in the Steelers' 28-17 victory in Game 4 of the 2004 season, Pittsburgh has allowed only one 100-yard runner in 52 games - or the equivalent of more than three NFL regular seasons. Now the Steelers get San Francisco's Frank Gore, the NFL's No. 3 rusher a season ago with 1,695 yards.
Analysis: What is often overlooked about Pittsburgh's 3-4 defense is its strength against the run. But Gore had nine 100-yard games last season, six in the 49ers' final eight games. He had 130 yards or more in each of his last six 100-yard games and had 150 or more three times. This season, Gore has 136 yards in two games as the 49ers (2-0) have managed little offense in beating the Cardinals (20-17) and Rams (17-16). The 5-foot-9, 223-pound Gore missed practice Wednesday to attend his mother's funeral but, despite the sadness in his personal life, the Steelers expect to see a motivated running back Sunday. Consider the Steelers DST a No. 1 option this week because aside from Gore, the 49ers have little else going for them on offense right now.
News: The Steelers held Buffalo to three points, 154 passing yards and 102 rush yards in Week 2. Pittsburgh totaled four sacks and a forced fumble.
Analysis: An excellent outing from an excellent defense, but the story changes next week when they host the 49ers in a battle of unbeaten teams in Week 3. Still, start them in next week's Fantasy action.
News: This week is a great matchup for the Steelers, who will limit Bills RB Marshawn Lynch and come after QB J.P. Losman. Buffalo managed less than 200 yards of total offense in Week 1 against Denver with an interception and two sacks.
Analysis: The Steelers have one of the league's best offense, while the Bills offense is nothing to write home about. This game just has all the signs of being an easy win for the Steelers.
News: The Steelers allowed 221 yards of total offense and only seven points in Week 1 at Cleveland. LB James Harrison, DB Ike Taylor, DB Ryan Clark, LB James Farrior, LB Clark Haggans and DL Aaron Smith all had a sack. Taylor and DB Deshea Townsend added an interception each. DB William Gay, DB Bryant McFadden, and Smith had a fumble recovery as the Steelers totaled six sacks and five turnovers against the Browns.
Analysis: The Steelers looked good, even if it was against a sub-par offense in Cleveland. They'll look to keep the momentum going in Week 2 vs. Buffalo and remain a must-start defensive unit in all formats.
News: According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Steelers will remove WR Santonio Holmes from returning kicks and punts and replace him with newly-signed Allen Rossum. Coach Mike Tomlin hasn't committed to Rossum returning punts and kickoffs in the team's season opener Sunday in Cleveland. But all indications point to him doing just that.
Analysis: A great DST unit adds a little sizzle with the addition of Rossum. Continue to view the Steelers DST as a startable unit for Fantasy play, especially since Rossum should be good for at least one TD this season.
News: The Steelers acquired cornerback-kick returner Allen Rossum from the Falcons on Saturday for a conditional 2008 draft pick. Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl player as a return specialist, holds Falcons team records for kickoff and punt return yards and also had two punt return touchdowns. The former Notre Dame player broke into the NFL as a third-round pick with Philadelphia in 1998 before being traded to Green Bay in 2000. He signed with Atlanta as a free agent in 2002. Rossum had a 59-yard kickoff return that set up a score in Atlanta's 24-19 exhibition victory over Cincinnati on Monday. He had a concussion last week and did not return any kicks Thursday against Baltimore. Last season, Rossum averaged 7.8 yards on 37 punt returns, the lowest average of his career. He averaged 14 yards in 2003 and 12.4 in 2004. The Steelers tried several players as kickoff and punt returners without much success during the preseason.
Analysis: A great DST unit adds a little sizzle with the addition of Rossum. Continue to view the Steelers DST as a startable unit for Fantasy play, especially since Rossum should be good for at least one TD this season.
News: Pittsburgh's starting defense has allowed only 29 yards and one first down during minimal playing time in two preseason games.
Analysis: The Steelers have managed to stifle Packers QB Brett Favre and Saints QB Drew Brees -- two pretty good NFL players. Could this be a sign of things to come for the Steelers D in 2007? Despite a change in head coach, the Steelers DST remains a solid Fantasy option.
News: LB Derek Rehage (thumb) remained on the PUP list for Sunday's preseason game against the Saints and LB Lawrence Timmons (groin) was also unable to play.
Analysis: With or without Rehage and Timmons going into the 2007 season, the Steelers remain a solid Fantasy DST from week-to-week in most formats.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers claimed linebacker Marquis Cooper on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday and released rookie wide receiver Chris Jackson and first-year safety Harrison Smith. They also re-signed wide receiver Gerran Walker, a former Lehigh star who was released two weeks ago.
Analysis: Cooper, a four-year veteran, played in two games with Pittsburgh last season before being cut. He previously played two seasons with Tampa Bay and in four games last season with Seattle. His addition and the loss of Smith have no effect on the overall Fantasy appeal of the Steelers DST. The Steelers remain a solid Fantasy DST from week-to-week in most formats.
News: Steelers star safety Troy Polamalu signed a four-year contract extension on Monday that made him the team's highest-paid player and one of the NFL's top-paid defensive backs. Polamalu's signing was the second major contract deal by the Steelers in two days. They agreed to a five-year contract Sunday with outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, their first-round draft pick. Polamalu made the Pro Bowl the last three seasons and, besides being known for the flowing black hair that streams out of his helmet, is widely regarded as one of the league's top defensive players.
Analysis: Polamalu may have lost a bit of motivation for the 2007 season, but he is still expected to spearhead one of the toughest defensive units in the NFL. The Steelers will work in the 3-4 scheme despite new head coach Mike Tomlin being a Tampa-2 type of defensive mind (which calls for a 4-3 defense). They remain a startable Fantasy DST, but they're slowly slipping out of the top 12 on our rank list.
News:Sports Illustrated's Peter King reports that Steelers DE Brett Keisel told him that the team was "still running coach (Dick) LeBeau's defense, with a few new wrinkles. We're going to stick with what we do and what (LeBeau) has created, it looks like." The Steelers' new head coach is Mike Tomlin, who comes from the Tampa-2 school of thought defensively. In other Steelers D news, the club's top two draft picks, linebackers Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley, were hurt Friday during the first day of a three-day minicamp. Timmons' groin was wrapped following the morning practice and Woodley injured a hamstring. Neither injury is believed to be serious.
Analysis: Expect Timmons and Woodley to be all right. As for the defense, expect them to be a startable unit, but out of the top-five overall DSTs in Fantasy Football. Look their way with a late-round pick in 2007 drafts.
News: The Steelers took FSU LB Lawrence Timmons with the 14th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Timmons was considered a first-round talent but might have been a reach here. Then again, his big size (6-foot-3, 232 pounds) combined with his 4.62 time in the 40-yard dash and his impressive resume at Florida State made him irrestible for the Steelers, who could always use solid outside linebackers.
Analysis: Timmons will be tabbed to take over for Joey Porter in the team's 3-4 defense (which it appears they are keeping despite 4-3 coach Mike Tomlin now running the show). They remain a startable Fantasy DST, but they're slowly slipping out of the top 12 on our rank list.
News: Defensive end Nick Eason, who played for the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons, signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday. Eason, a fourth-round draft pick by the Browns from Clemson in 2003, was waived by Cleveland in 2004. He spent part of the 2005 season on the Denver Broncos' practice squad before rejoining the Browns late that season. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Eason would replace Rodney Bailey, who signed last week with the Arizona Cardinals. Eason had 23 tackles last season. In 30 career NFL games, he has 44 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Bailey had six tackles in 12 games as a backup for Pittsburgh last season.
Analysis: The Steelers defense lost Joey Porter earlier this offseason and have a number of unsigned low-end defensive players still out in free agency. Reports are saying that the team will primarily play in the 3-4 scheme, so consider them still a valuable DST unit in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: Cornerback Chidi Iwuoma signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday. Iwuoma, 29, was a member of the Steelers from 2002-05, but was released before the start of last season. He re-signed in December and played two games before being placed on the injured reserve with a wrist injury. The 5-foot-9, 184-pound Iwuoma recorded 72 special-teams tackles with the Steelers. He began his NFL career in 2001 as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions.
News: The Steelers announced Thursday that they have cut veteran LB Joey Porter. Porter had been with the Steelers for eight seasons, racking up 40 solo tackles, seven sacks and three passes defensed in 2006. In his career with the Steelers, he had 334 solo tackles, 60 sacks, 10 interceptions, 18 forced fumbles and 33 passes defensed. The move is believed to be one where the Steelers make room under their salary cap.
Analysis: Porter will receive lots of attention on the free-agent market, but he leaves the Steelers with a hole in their defense. Then again, they could move to a 4-3 scheme, which leaves them one linebacker free anyway. Consider the Steelers DST a solid unit even without Porter, who generated sacks and clever soundbytes but not a lot else. In IDP leagues, Porter is at best a low-end No. 3 Fantasy LB because he doesn't pile up the tackles, though that may change depending on where he plays in '07.
News: The Steelers have announced they have signed DE Aaron Smith to a four-year contract extension that keeps him with the club through 2011. In 2006, Smith totaled 61 tackles (44 solo) with 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.
Analysis: Smith is a key cog in the Steelers' 3-4 defense, particularly because he's a big defensive line with lots of athleticism. The Steelers need those guys. Continue to view the Steelers DST as a solid No. 1 unit for Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in '07 drafts.
News: New coach Mike Tomlin has a background with the 4-3 defense, but the Steelers are known for playing the 3-4. The Steelers also have to deal with the contract status of LB Joey Porter, which could determine the scheme they play in 2007. On special teams, the Steelers have a stud return man in WR Santonio Holmes, who returned a punt for a touchdown last year. They need to improve on their kickoff returns.
Analysis: The Steelers DST should be fine in 2007 no matter what scheme they play. The Steelers still have quality playmakers with LBs James Farrior, Larry Foote and Clark Haggans and DB Troy Polamalu. It should be another big year for the unit, and consider them a No. 1 option.
News: The Steelers DST had no sacks or turnovers against the Bengals. LB James Farrior had five tackles. DB Troy Polamalu had two tackles. DB Ike Taylor had six tackles. LB Larry Foote had three tackles. LB Joey Porter had one tackle.
Analysis: The Steelers DST will be a low-end No. 1 option in 2007.
News: The Steelers DST had two interceptions and a fumble recovery against the Ravens. DB Troy Polamalu had eight tackles. LB James Farrior had eight tackles. LB Joey Porter had seven tackles. DB Bryant McFadden had five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. DB Deshea Townsend had two tackles and an interception. DB Ike Taylor had three tackles. LB Clark Haggans had four tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Steelers a No. 1 DST option for Week 17 against the Bengals and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Steelers played at Carolina in Week 15, totaling five sacks, an interception and a special-teams touchdown (punt return by Santonio Holmes) while holding the Panthers to 3 points.
Analysis: The Steelers defense could be viewed as a startable option vs. Baltimore in Week 16 in what should be a low-scoring game.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers defense allowed just seven points and 294 total net yards in Week 14 against the Browns. Reuben Droughns was the leading rusher for Cleveland, running five times for a paltry six yards. The Steelers had one interception and a fumble recovery, although they did not record a sack.
Analysis: The Steelers DST will be a solid play in Week 15 at Carolina. Start them in all Fantasy leagues, although their beleaguered secondary might allow quite a few yards to WR Steve Smith.
News: On Tuesday, the Steelers announced that SS Troy Polamalu (knee) and FS Ryan Clark (groin) would be OUT for Week 14 vs. Cleveland. Mike Logan and Tyrone Carter are expected to start for them on Thursday.
Analysis: The Steelers defense is still a safe start in Week 14 Fantasy play as they're coming off a good game and playing at home against a bitter division rival on Thursday. Consider them a No. 1 defense for the week ahead.
News: Coach John Gruden elected to trot his kicker out to boot a field goal on the final play of the game in Week 13 at Pittsburgh to ruin the shutout. The Steelers allowed three points, 254 total net yards along with five sacks, three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is a solid start for Week 14 against Cleveland, who will likely be down to backup QB Derek Anderson after Charlie Frye left with a possible broken right wrist.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers announced T Willie Colon, OG Chris Kemoeatu, C Marvin Philip, S Troy Polamalu, WR Willie Reid, QB Brian St. Pierre, RB Duce Staley and WR Hines Ward (knee) are inactive for Week 13 against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: With the exception of Polamalu in IDP Fantasy leagues and Ward, none of the other players have Fantasy value.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Polamalu was hurt during a 27-0 loss Sunday at Baltimore, and the team initially felt the injury might be serious. Tests revealed a second-degree knee sprain, and coach Bill Cowher said Tuesday that surgery is not needed. The All-Pro safety has not missed a game to injury in his four NFL seasons.
Analysis: The Steelers play two games in five days -- Tampa Bay on Sunday and Cleveland on Dec. 7 -- and the compact schedule may keep him out for an additional game. The Steelers defense should still be considered usable vs. a lowly Tampa Bay offense in Week 13.
News: The Steelers defense had zero interceptions, zero forced fumbles and zero sacks at Baltimore in Week 12. The Ravens put 27 points on the Steelers in the game. Moreover, Steelers SS Troy Polamalu was carted off the field during the team's 27-0 loss at Baltimore with what coach Bill Cowher said was a "significant" knee injury.
Analysis: This week it was ugly, but the Steelers could pull off a shutout vs. Tampa Bay in Week 13. Get them ready for Fantasy use next week.
News: The Steelers defense allowed 20 points at Cleveland in Week 11, racking up four sacks and a forced fumble in the process.
Analysis: The Steelers will face an improved Ravens offense in Week 12 at Baltimore, but they still have to be started as a middle-end option in Fantasy play.
News: The Steelers have upgraded SS Troy Polamalu (concussion), LB James Harrison (ankle) and CB Deshea Townsend (ankle) from questionable to probable for Week 11's game at Cleveland. All three are expected to play against the Browns.
Analysis: Polamalu and Townsend will definitely help the Steelers secondary from what expects to be a frequent Cleveland pass attack. Use the Steelers defense at Cleveland in Week 11.
News: Steelers DB Troy Polamalu went through an entire practice for the first time this week without difficulty Thursday and, barring some type of setback, should play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Polamalu, who sustained a concussion Sunday in the win against New Orleans, was expected to take another ImPACT test after practice that measures brain process, memory, and speed and motor skills reaction. He will take another test Friday and, unless there is some change in his condition, will start against the Browns.
Analysis: Start Polamalu in all IDP leagues and consider the Steelers DST a good start for Week 11 against Cleveland.
News: The Steelers' injury report lists Troy Polamalu as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. That might qualify as news to Polamalu. "I feel good," the All-Pro safety said after Wednesday's practice at the Steelers' South Side facility. "Good enough to go." Polamalu had a series of concussions in high school and at Southern Cal but had never gotten one as an NFL player until last Sunday at Heinz Field. Polamalu said he has passed the tests that are administered to players after they get a concussion and hopes to get medically cleared to play against the Browns. "It was enough for me not to play," Polamalu said when asked about the severity of the concussion. "If I could have thought just a little bit, I would have been out there."
Analysis: That's good news for the Steelers DST and for Polamalu owners. Consider Polamalu a good start in IDP leauges and the Steelers a good DST option in Week 11 against Cleveland.
News: Troy Polamalu may play at Cleveland on Sunday despite sustaining at least the sixth concussion of his football career. "He'll do some testing again (Wednesday). He feels better," coach Bill Cowher said Tuesday. "This will be to see if he stays asymptomatic. Once again, this is a situation where he'll have to get clearance from the doctors before any decision is made about his availability."
Analysis: Polamalu is listed as questionable, meaning there's a 50-50 chance he'll play only a week after being so disoriented during Pittsburgh's 38-31 victory Sunday he almost tumbled off the Steelers' bench while sitting by himself.
News: After giving up 17 or fewer points in three of their first five games, the Steelers have given up 31, 31 and 41 during their last four games. They are ninth from the bottom in points allowed after being the third best a year ago. Turnovers also don't explain why they're not getting to the quarterback or getting off the field enough on third down (opponents are converting nearly 40 percent of the time). Are they getting old? Are opponents finally figuring out how to handle their multiple blitzes? Or have they simply peaked? "We've been faced with all kinds of situations," Porter said. "Guys could have easily folded their tents and started thinking about other stuff. But that's not the makeup of this team. We know what we have here in this locker room. It was only one game, but it's one game we definitely needed. Hopefully it's something we can build on."
Analysis: The Steelers play at Cleveland in Week 11. While the Browns offense hasn't done much this season, they are expected to test the Pittsburgh secondary during the game. Consider the Steelers defense a low-end starting unit for the week ahead.
News: The Steelers defense allowed 31 points and almost 400 passing yards vs. New Orleans in Week 10. They totaled one sack and four forced fumbles.
Analysis: Pittsburgh's defense should be great at Cleveland in Week 11. Definitely use them if you can.
News: The Steelers DST gave up 31 points against Denver. DL Aaron Smith had six tackles and a sack. LB James Farrior had 12 tackles. DB Troy Polamalu had two tackles. LB Joey Porter had three tackles. DB Ike Taylor had five tackles. LB Clark Haggans had eight tackles.
Analysis: The Steelers DST is worth using as a No. 2 DST for Week 10 against New Orleans with the way the Saints offense is playing. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The Steelers defense was absolutely dominate in Week 8 against the Raiders, yet, the Steelers still lost 20-13. The Steelers held the Raiders offense to 98 total yards. They had six sacks (LB Clark Haggans 2, LB Joey Porter 2, LB James Farrior 1 and DL Travis Kirschke 1) and one interception (Porter). LB Larry Foote and Haggans both led the team with seven tackles. Farrior had four and Porter had two.
Analysis: The Steelers defense kept them in the game despite the poor performance by Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, who threw four interceptions. The Steelers play the Broncos in Week 9 and you should definitely want to use the Steelers DST for Fantasy purposes. Haggans, Porter, Foote and Farrior are all reliable Fantasy options in IDP leagues.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is considering inserting CB Bryant McFadden into the starting lineup at right cornerback in Week 8 at Oakland due to an injury to CB Deshea Townsend (hamstring).
Analysis: Neither McFadden or Townsend are worth using in most IDP leagues. Regardless of who starts, the Steelers DST is a must-start in all Fantasy leagues against the poor Raiders.
News: The Steelers defense only sacked Michael Vick once in Week 7, but did pick him off twice. They still gave up close to 400 yards of offense.
Analysis: So this game was bad news for the Steelers defense. The good news is that they play at Oakland in Week 8. Keep them in Fantasy lineups.
News: Notable inactives for Week 7's Falcons-Steelers game include: QB D.J. Shockley (emergency QB), S Cam Newton, TE Daniel Fells, DE John Abraham, DT Rod Coleman and LB John Leake. For Pittsburgh, QB Brian St. Pierre (emergency QB), WR/KR Willie Reid, RB Duce Staley, LB Joey Porter, LB James Harrison, DE Rodney Bailey are inactive.
Analysis: None of these players should be in your active lineup for Week 7.
News: The Steelers defense was up to snuff in Week 6 against the Chiefs, holding them to 7 points and coming up with three interceptions and a late defensive touchdown. Pittsburgh held the Chiefs to 185 passing yards and 38 rush yards -- 26 of them for Larry Johnson.
Analysis: Great outing by the Steelers defense, who will be challenged at Atlanta in Week 7 but are still worth starting as Michael Vick is known to turn over the football a few times per game.
News: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette, the Steelers will likely be without cornerback Deshea Townsend (hamstring/questionable), who didn't practice for the third day in a row on Friday.
Analysis: Townsend is expected to be replaced by Bryant McFadden, a No. 2 pick in 2005 who will make his second NFL start. The Steelers will also be without Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter (hamstring) against Kansas City. They are still an above average unit worthy of startin in leagues of 12-plus teams for Week 6 against the Chiefs.
News: The Steelers have downgraded LB Joey Porter (hamstring) from questionable to out for Week 6 vs. Kansas City. He injured his hamstring on Wednesday during practice.
Analysis: This is a huge blow to the Steelers defense, especially with Larry Johnson and the Chiefs coming to town. IDP owners definitely get Porter to the bench. On most weeks it would still be safe to say start the Steelers DST, but with a bevy of injuries to key players, you might want to start another DST. Keep an eye on the injury situation before making a decision, but losing Porter is huge.
News: Two key Pittsburgh defensive starters, linebacker Joey Porter and cornerback Deshea Townsend, left practice Wednesday with injured hamstrings. Coach Bill Cowher listed each as questionable for Sunday. "It could be a game-day decision for both players," Cowher said. "We'll work on contingency plans if they can't go." Also, Steelers DL Brett Keisel (ribs) is listed as questionable for Week 6 vs. Kansas City.
Analysis: This could be potentially devastating news for the Steelers defensive unit. The team cannot afford to lose another game, so getting Porter, Townsend and Keisel healthy for Kansas City will be crucial. On most weeks it would still be safe to say start the Steelers DST, but with a bevy of injuries to key players, you might want to start another DST. Keep an eye on the injury situation before making a decision.
News: The Pittsburgh DST allowed 23 points and 341 total net yards in Week 5 at San Diego. They also racked up four sacks and an interception.
Analysis: The Steelers do enough on defense to warrant using in all Fantasy leagues in Week 6 against the Chiefs, especially if RB Larry Johnson (neck) is unable to play. He left Sunday's game at Arizona late and his status is not yet immediately known.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers announced T Willie Colon, TE Tim Euhus, G Chris Kemoeatu, S Mike Logan, C Marvin Phillip, QB Brian St. Pierre (third quarterback), RB Duce Staley and LB Rian Wallace are inactive for Week 5 at San Diego.
Analysis: The Steelers are relatively healthy after coming off of their bye week. None of these players are particularly attractive from a Fantasy perspective.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ricardo Colclough will miss the rest of the season because of a neck injury. Colclough was not scheduled to play Sunday in San Diego because of a nerve problem in his neck. He muffed punt led to Cincinnati's decisive touchdown in a 28-20 victory in Pittsburgh on Sept. 24.
Analysis: The bad news is that he's done for the year. The good news is that he wasn't much of an IDP option anyway. The Steelers defense has taken a step back this year as a unit, but this news isn't a reason to consider sitting the Steelers DST against San Diego in Week 5.
News: The Steelers got six sacks, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries against the Bengals. LB Larry Foote had nine tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. DB Deshea Townsend had seven tackles, an interception, sack and fumble recovery. LB Clark Haggans had five tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. DB Ike Taylor had an interception. DE Aaron Smith had five tackles and a sack. DE Brett Keisel had a sack.
Analysis: Analysis: The Steelers are off in Week 4 and face a tough matchup in Week 5 against San Diego. Still, they create plenty of turnovers and sacks, so start them every week.
News: The Steelers got six sacks, an interception and three fumble recoveries against the Bengals. LB Larry Foote had nine tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Steelers D does their part
News: The Pittsburgh defense allowed just three field goals and no touchdowns in Week 2 at Jacksonville. They also tallied a sack and an interception in the impressive showing. DB Troy Polamalu (shoulder) was able to play and he had three solo tackles.
Analysis: The Steelers have done a great job in the first two weeks of the season, but they will have their hands full with the Bengals in Week 3 at Heinz Field.
