News: The Bolts locked up three defenders with their first three picks in the NFL Draft: South Carolina linebacker Melvin Ingram, UConn defensive tackle Kendall Reyes and LSU safety Brandon Taylor. Ingram is considered to be among the top pass rushers available in the draft, and that was a huge need for the Chargers. Reyes will provide some quality depth (and potentially) start along the D-line and Taylor should be a future starter who adds depth to the backfield while working on special teams.
Analysis: This was a great draft for the Chargers, whose DST looks a lot nicer with this young talent injected. They'll have a new defensive coordinator in John Pagano, who will keep the 3-4 scheme, and they should be better at getting to the quarterback with Ingram joining free-agent signee Jarret Johnson and mainstay Shaun Phillips. If Taylor can get up to speed quickly and Eddie Royal or Roscoe Parrish can play well retuning kicks, this DST could make some noise. Starting the season off at Oakland isn't exactly a terrible thing either. Don't feel obligated to draft them with a final-round pick because there are better choices to start the year, but don't be surprised to find yourself considering them off waivers during the season.
News: San Diego released defensive coordinator Greg Manusky on Thursday after the team yielded 23.6 points per game this past season, the fifth-highest total in the AFC. The Chargers quickly named his replacement in John Pagano, who has served as the team's linebackers coach since 2005. Manusky was hired last offseason to replace Ron Rivera, who became the head coach at Carolina. He previously served as San Francisco's defensive coordinator before joining the Chargers.
Analysis: The Chargers paced the NFL in total defense in 2010 before taking a significant step backward last season. In 2011, San Diegos defensive ranking dropped to 16th overall, including 20th against the run and 13th against the pass, after also leading the NFL in pass defense in 2010. Injuries also hurt the team on both side of the ball, but they maintained a solid special teams unit. Fantasy owners should expect a rebound for the Chargers in 2012 and consider them a possible high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in drafts.
News: The Chargers defense did a decent job of limit the Raiders in Week 17 but they got their biggest play on special teams. WR Richard Goodman returned a kick off 105 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. San Diego gave up 520 yards of total offense, including 417 through the air, in the 38-26 win. While they allowed QB Carson Palmer to throw for two scores, DB Antoine Cason was able to pick him off in the fourth quarter. San Diego LB Antwan Barnes, who entered Sunday with 11 sacks on the year, was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Chargers suffered a ton of injuries on defense this season and the unit suffered because of it. They gave up a ton of yards throughout the year, which caused their offense to try and outscore teams. San Diego should be in better shape next season on both defense and special teams so consider their DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day.
News: The Chargers gave up 489 yards of total offense, including 191 on the ground, when they faced the Raiders earlier in the year and could be in for another rough outing in Week 17. San Diego ranks 10th in the league in pass defense but 20th against the run, giving up over 123 yards per game. Oakland sports the sixth-best rushing attack in the NFL and rank 13th in passing. The Chargers have recorded 32 sacks thus far with 16 interceptions and two DST scores.
Analysis: The Chargers will need a win on Sunday and some help from other teams to make the playoffs so expect them to be ready to play against Oakland. But as the Lions showed a week ago, San Diego is very susceptible on defense and could get run all over again in Week 17. This matchup could end up being a shootout so consider the Chargers DST as No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: Lions QB Matthew Stafford passed for 373 yards and three touchdowns while the San Diego defense did little to stop him in a 38-10 loss in Week 16. Besides three sacks of Stafford and a decent showing against the run, holding them to 87 yards on the ground, the Chargers had no answers for the Lions super-charged passing game. "We obviously weren't able to compete with this team. They came out, spread us out, and made a lot of plays in the passing game, said Chargers coach Norv Turner. It's disappointing. I expected us to play better."
Analysis: The Chargers DST unit had been improving in recent weeks, allowing just 18 points combined in the previous two games. However, when faced with the Lions trio of talented receivers, including Calvin Johnson who went for 102 yards and a touchdown, they put up little opposition. It was a disappointing showing, however not much was expected, as the Lions have been one of the leagues most potent offenses for most of the season. They have a much better match up in Week 17 against the Raiders, however the Chargers did give up 24 points to Oakland in Week 10 when they last met. Consider them a No. 2 DST unit for Week 17.
News: The Chargers DST plays at Detroit in Week 16 and the Lions have been giving up plenty of Fantasy production to opposing DST units this season. Detroit, in fact, has allowed the eighth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units. Just last week the Raiders DST recorded a defensive and special teams touchdown against the Lions.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has been an improved unit in recent weeks with just 18 points allowed combined in the last two games against Buffalo and Baltimore. The Lions should prove much tougher to stop, however. The Chargers DST has been a low-end option for most of the season and is just a No. 2 Fantasy DST unit for Week 16.
News: The Chargers defense did a solid job of pressuring the quarterback in Week 15 against the Ravens. They recorded seven sacks, including four by LB Antwan Barnes, and picked off QB Joe Flacco twice in the 34-14 win. San Diego held Baltimore to 290 yards of total offense in the contest, including just 89 on the ground. The Chargers entered Sunday ranked 23rd in the league in run defense.
Analysis: The Chargers played a statement game in Week 15 as they dominated on both offense and defense against a solid team. After recording just 22 sacks through the first 13 games, they brought the pressure on Balitmore and should have an improved pass rush going forward. Their secondary will be put to the test in Week 16 against the Lions but with how they have been playing of late, consider the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Chargers have not fared too well against the run thus far and could be in trouble in Week 15 against the Ravens. Baltimore ranks 13th in rushing, averaging over 117 yards per game, led by RB Ray Rice and 15th in passing. San Diego sports the seventh-best pass defense in the league but ranks 23rd against the run, giving up nearly 129 yards per contest. The Chargers have recorded 22 sacks thus far with 14 interceptions and two DST scores.
Analysis: The Chargers have limited opponents to under 15 points over the last three games but none of those teams had the balanced offense Baltimore has. San Diego hasn't been generating much of a pass rush this year and while they can cause some turnovers, they don't do enough on a weekly basis to be a must-start DST option. Fantasy owners should consider them more of a No. 2 option for Week 15.
News: San Diego held Buffalo's offense to three points in Week 14. The Bills did score a touchdown on defense. The Chargers contained RB C.J. Spiller to just 46 yards on the ground and picked off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick twice. Eric Weddle intercepted a Fitzpatrick pass after the ball bounced off a linebacker. Later in the contest Steve Gregory picked off Fitzpatrick and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. The Chargers would go on to win the game, 37-10. Once the game was well in hand, Marcus Gilchrist capped off the game with an interception of backup QB Tyler Thigpen. The Chargers also recorded one sack in the game.
Analysis: San Diego hasn't been generating much of a pass rush this year and recorded just one sack in Week 14. The Chargers will have a tough task ahead of them as they have to figure out how to contain Ravens RB Ray Rice in Week 15. While the Chargers can cause some turnovers, they don't do enough on a weekly basis to be a must-start DST option. Fantasy owners should consider them more of a No. 2 option for next Sunday.
News: Buffalo has turned to QB Ryan Fitzpatrick the last two weeks with Fred Jackson out for the year. But with the emergence of RB C.J. Spiller, the Chargers will have to contain him in Week 14. San Diego hasn't been able to generate a pass rush this year, and it won't be easy to get to Fitzpatrick. He's been sacked a league-low 16 times so far this season. The Bills have been averaging 348.8 total yards and 23.2 points per contest this year.
Analysis: The Chargers even had TE Randy McMichael work out with the linebackers on Friday, which would be an extreme measure to take to get more of a pass rush. The Chargers have just 21 sacks on the season. Opposing DSTs are averaging 7.67 Fantasy points an outing versus the Bills this year, which is the seventh lowest total in CBSSports.com Fantasy formats. But with Buffalo adjusting to life without leading rusher Jackson, San Diego's DST should be considered a high-end No. 2 option for Week 14.
News: The Chargers DST allowed just 14 points on 306 total yards of offense in Week 13 against the Jaguars. The unit was able to hold Jacksonville to just 177 passing yards in the 38-14 victory and did not allow a single point after halftime. San Diego was able to force one turnover in the win, while racking up a pair of sacks.
Analysis: The Chargers weren't able to slow down Maurice Jones-Drew on Monday night, but they certainly limited everyone else's production. MJD accounted for 188 of Jacksonville's 306 yards of total offense, meaning the rest of the team racked up just 118 yards in the contest. However, the unit failed to really make any game-changing plays and now will face a Buffalo team in Week 14 that can score points in a hurry. Consider the Chargers a No. 2 Fantasy DST against the Bills.
News: The Chargers will be facing a Jaguars offense in Week 13 that is not very potent but has a strong running game behind RB Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew has rushed for 1,040 yards through 11 games, which leads the AFC, and has led Jacksonville to the 12th ranked running attack in the league. But despite their prowess for running the ball, Jacksonville ranks dead last in passing, averaging just 131 yards per contest. San Diego ranks ninth in the NFL against the pass and 25th in run defense. The Chargers have recorded 19 sacks thus far with 10 interceptions and one DST score.
Analysis: The Chargers have dealt with many injuries to their front-seven this season, which explains why they have struggled against the run. While they might not be able to slow down Jones-Drew on Monday night, their secondary should be able to keep rookie QB Blaine Gabbert at bay and hopefully will be able to cause some turnovers. But since San Diego has not been able to limit many teams thus far, consider their DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 13.
News: San Diego focused on Denver QB Tim Tebow and the running game in Week 12, but they couldn't stop it. The Broncos ran for 208 yards and Tebow finished the game with a143 passing yards and a score. Tebow completed three passes in the first half but one of those was good for a touchdown. The Chargers had a chance to recover a fumble, but no one fell on the ball and the Broncos would retain the possession. The Chargers would falter yet again as they allowed the Broncos to get into field goal range in overtime. Matt Prater would boot a 37-yard field goal to win the game, 16-13. The Chargers sacked Tebow just once as he was able to elude defenders all day.
Analysis: The Chargers knew they had to stop the running attack of the Broncos and they failed miserably. The good news for San Diego is they face a team next week that struggles offensively -- Jacksonville. Granted they may give the controls back to Luke McCown, but he threw four picks at the beginning of the season for the Jaguars. Fantasy owners should consider the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option for Week 13.
News: San Diego hosts Denver in Week 12, a team that has gone 4-1 under QB Tim Tebow. The Chargers beat the Broncos earlier this season and aim for a fifth straight win over Denver. The only change is that Tebow wasn't the quarterback back in Week 5 for the Broncos. The Chargers will have to deal with his ability to run the ball and lead his team on fourth-quarter rallies. Opposing DSTs are averaging 11.60 Fantasy points per contest versus the Broncos this season.
Analysis: San Diego allowed 31 points on 379 total yards last week -- 286 coming through the air. The fact Tebow doesn't throw much and has limited his turnovers this season makes starting the Chargers DST a difficult choice. Fantasy owners should consider them a low-end No. 2 option for Week 12.
News: The Chargers were unable to slow down the Bears in Week 11. San Diego surrendered 31 points on 379 total yards in the contest, including 286 through the air. While the unit did do a good job containing Matt Forte for most of the afternoon, Jay Cutler threw for a pair of touchdowns in the 31-20 victory and ran for another. The Chargers were only able to force one turnover in the defeat and failed to register a sack for the first time all season.
Analysis: The Chargers defense didn't play bad on Sunday, but once again failed to make any big plays. The unit was unable to register a sack and were only able to force one turnover, even though the Bears put the ball on the ground several times. Now the Chargers have the challenge of trying to slow down Tim Tebow and the run-happy Broncos in Week 12. San Diego has really struggled to defend the run this season and really looked out of sync when Tebow entered the game the first time these teams played each other. We would not recommend starting the Chargers DST next week.
News: The Chargers DST will be looking to slow down the Bears in Week 11. Chicago enters Sunday's contest ranked 17th in total offense, averaging 327.8 yards and 26.3 points per game. San Diego enters the contest rank 10th in total defense, allowing 331.3 yards and 25.3 points per game. The Chargers DST is ranked 21st, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 18 sacks, while forcing 13 turnovers thus far.
Analysis: San Diego's defense was suppose to be the strength of the team this season, but the unit has failed to live up to expectations thus far. Injuries haven't helped their cause and the Chargers will likely be without Shaun Philips once again this week, which could make things difficult against the Bears. Chicago has been playing very well of late and have scored 30 plus points in each of their last two contests. Consider the Chargers a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 11.
News: San Diego allowed Oakland RB Michael Bush to run for 157 yards in Week 10. The Raiders compiled 191 yards on the ground and 298 yards through the air. San Diego was able to intercept Carson Palmer once and put him on the ground once in the contest. The Chargers would end up losing the game, 24-17. They also lost LB Takeo Spikes in the first half after he in the first half with a concussion.
Analysis: San Diego is beat up in the line backer corps and Spikes adds to that. Things don't get a whole lot better for the Bolts as they face the Bears in Week 11. If they let Bush run for 157 yards, just imagine what Matt Forte will be able to do. Fantasy owners should also keep tabs on the status of all the injured linebackers to see if they'll be able to take the field next week. For that reason the jury is still out on the Chargers DST for Week 11.
News: The Chargers DST could once again be shorthanded in Week 10 against the Raiders as LB Shaun Phillips was unable to practice on Tuesday. Phillips, who also missed last week's contest against the Packers, is listed as question for the contest. San Diego enters the contest ranked seventh in total defense, allowing just 311.6 yards and 25.5 points per contest. Oakland enters the contest ranked 10th in total offense, averaging 371.9 yards and 23 points per game.
Analysis: Despite failing to pick up a win last week against Green Bay, the Chargers DST actually played pretty well against the Packers. Now the unit will likely be tested once again in Week 10 with the Raiders rolling into town. Oakland looks like a new team on offense since the addition of Carson Palmer, although the Raiders could be without Darren McFadden. McFadden continues to be slowed by his sprained foot and has not been able to practice yet. Even if he does play, he is unlikely to be at 100 percent, so consider the Chargers a No. 1 Fantasy DST on Thursday night.
News: The Chargers were unable to slow down the Packers in Week 9. The unit surrendered 45 points on 368 total yards of offense in the 45-38 defeat, but could not keep Green Bay out of the end zone in the final period. San Diego allowed 14 points in the final period, including a pair of touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers. The Chargers were unable to force a turnover and racked four sacks in the defeat.
Analysis: San Diego actually played well on Sunday afternoon, but were unable to slow down the Packers enough. However, the unit wasn't helped by their offense, as the Packers scored two defensive touchdowns in the contest. Now the Chaqrgers DST will look to rebound when the Raiders come to town in Week 10. Oakland has been playing better on offense of late, so consider the Chargers a No. 2 Fantasy DST on Thursday night.
News: After forcing just three turnovers in its previous two games combined, the San Diego defense broke out in Week 8 and mustered a season-high four takeaways in a loss to Kansas City. The Chargers will look to continue their momentum in Week 9, but will be facing a Green Bay team which rarely makes mistakes. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has thrown just three interceptions this season, including just one over his past two outings. San Diego has picked off eight passes this year, but is tied for 12th in the AFC with a turnover difference of minus-five.
Analysis: Earlier this week, Rodgers said that pass protection would be at a premium in Sunday's game as he faces the Chargers blitzing 3-4 defense. San Diego is tied for 25th in sacks, having accumulated just 13 in seven games this season. The contest could turn into an offensive shootout as the Packers lead the NFL in scoring at 32.9 points per game. The Chargers has allowed at least 20 points in each of their past three games, which includes two losses. Consider San Diego a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in Week 9 against the reigning Super Bowl champs.
News: The Chargers defense was again able to cause some turnovers in Week 8 against the Chiefs. DB Eric Weddle picked off QB Matt Cassel twice and San Diego also recovered two fumbles in the 23-20 loss. Kansas City racked up a total of 341 yards, including 247 through the air. The Chargers also sacked Cassel three times in the defeat.
Analysis: The Chargers have given up 20-plus points in each of their last three games and have not won since Week 5. But they continue to limit teams yard-wise and have become adept at causing turnovers. San Diego's secondary will be put to the test with the Packers and their potent offense up next on the schedule so consider the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: After giving up just 252 yards of total offense when they met earlier in the year, the Chargers will be looking to limit the Chiefs again in Week 8. Kansas City ranks seventh in the league in rushing, putting up nearly 130 yards per game, but rank 30th in passing. San Diego ranks third and 21st against the pass and run, respectively. The Chargers have recorded 10 sacks thus far with six interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Chargers did a solid job of limiting the Chiefs the first time around but Kansas City enters Monday night on a bit of a roll, having won each of their last three games. Keeping the running game in check will be the key for San Diego, which they have shown in the past can be a problem at times. Heading into Week 8, consider the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: After forcing two turnovers in the first quarter, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown, the San Diego defense could not create any more takeaways and suffered a 27-21 loss to the Jets in Week 7 on Sunday. The Chargers surrendered 17 unanswered points after halftime as San Diego fumbled away a 21-10 lead. The visitors also finished with just two sacks -- both by Shaun Phillips -- as their three-game winning streak was stopped.
Analysis: The Chargers' continue to have issues pressuring the quarterback and now have only 10 sacks in six games this season. They entered the game tied for 28th in the NFL in fewest sacks. San Diego has now permitted 20 points in back-to-back games as both of its losses this year have come on the road. Fantasy owners should expect a rebound in Week 8 against error-prone Kansas City. Consider the Chargers a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for the AFC West matchup.
News: Despite owning one of the best defenses in the league, the San Diego defense has only eight sacks this season. The Chargers are allowing 179.6 passing yards per game -- second-best in the NFL -- but their sack total is tied for 28th-worst in the league. I think we are getting good pressure, coach Norv Turner said. We have been able to get after quarterbacks pretty good. It is something we are always working on. I think this week gave us a chance to work on some things to get some more pressure. San Diego faces the Jets in Week 7.
Analysis: The Chargers are coming off their bye week following a sluggish defensive performance in Week 4 against Denver. The unit did not record a sack for the first time this year and surrendered a season-high 162 rushing yards. It was the second occasion San Diego has allowed an opponent to run for more than 150 yards. New York is boasting an improved running game and will look to post a rushing touchdown for the second time in its last three games. Consider the Chargers a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 7.
News: San Diego couldn't stop Denver RB Willis McGahee on Sunday as he rumbled for 125 yards on the ground. But the Chargers caused enough problems to force a quarterback change. San Diego intercepted starter Kyle Orton and held him to 34 passing yards in the first half. The team wouldn't record a sack either, but they were able to hold off a late Denver surge for a 29-24 win.
Analysis: The Chargers having faced Denver backup Tim Tebow in last year's finale helped but wasn't a huge emphasis in this week's practices. "You start by defending him running the ball and then if he throws, that's your second option," coach Norv Turner said. "I don't think we handled it as well as we will in the future." San Diego has a bye next week, but returns in Week 7 to face New York. Fantasy owners should keep the Chargers DST reserved until then and view them as a low-end option for that game.
News: San Diego travels to Denver in Week 5, a team that isn't clicking on all cylinders just yet. The Broncos are averaging 310.8 total yards of offense and 20.2 points per contest this season. The Chargers have intercepted four passes this season, something Broncos QB Kyle Orton has been prone to in 2011.
Analysis: The Chargers have compiled eight sacks on the year and if they can get to Orton on Sunday, the Broncos could be in for a long day. San Diego hasn't been dominant this season, but they are definitely posting nice Fantasy scores. Owners should view them as a No. 1 DST unit for Week 5 against Denver.
News: The Chargers DST surrendered 16 points and 248 yards of total offense in Week 4 against the Dolphins. The unit held Miami to just 176 yards through the air and knocked out starting QB Chad Henne in the first quarter. San Diego also held Miami to just 76 yards on the ground and only gave up one touchdown on the afternoon. The unit was able to rack up three sacks in the 26-16 defeat, while forcing a pair of turnovers.
Analysis: The Chargers DST played well against the Dolphins on Sunday, but Miami isn't exactly considered an offensive juggernaut. The unit will face a bigger test in Week 5 when they the face a Denver squad that put up 384 yards and 24 points against the Packers next week. While the Chargers DST hasn't been as dominant as some thought to this point, they have still played pretty well overall thus far. Consider the unit a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 5.
News: The Chargers DST will be looking to slow down the Dolphins in Week 4. Miami enters Sunday's contest ranked 12th in total offense, averaging nearly 388 total yards and 18 points per game thus far. San Diego is ranked eighth in total defense, allowing 314.3 yards and 23 points per contest. The Chargers DST also ranks 26th, in terms of Fantasy points, over the first three games of the season, racking up five sacks and forcing three turnovers thus far. However, the unit has yet to score a touchdown this season.
Analysis: The Chargers haven't been as dominant as some thought they would be thus far, but the unit has still been solid through the first three games of the season. However, San Diego's DST looks to have a pretty favorable matchup heading into Week 4 against the Dolphins. While Miami has racked up some yards this year, they have had problems putting the ball in the end zone. Consider the Chargers a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 4 against the Dolphins.
News: San Diego managed just one sack on the day against the Chiefs, as QB Matt Cassel experienced his best day of the year. Cassel did throw an interception in the fourth quarter, which sealed the 20-17 win for the Chargers. San Diego also held Kansas City to under 100 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Chiefs don't have Jamaal Charles anymore, so holding them to under 100 yards on the ground isn't too big of a feat. Still the Chargers gave up 17 points and couldn't put a ton of pressure on Cassel. They'll host Miami in Week 4, a team that has been running the ball well lately with rookie Daniel Thomas. Fantasy owners should view the Chargers DST as a borderline No. 1 option for Week 4.
News: San Diego hosts Kansas City in Week 3, a team that has scored just 10 points through the first two weeks of the season. Chargers coach Norv Turner credits Kansas City's rough start to turnovers. Right now they have turned the ball over nine times, Turner said. If you turn the ball over, you are going to struggle. I think they have played awfully well in the first half of both their games. Then the turnovers start. The Chiefs are averaging just 240 yards of offense per contest and are without leading rusher Jamaal Charles for the reset of the season.
Analysis: The Chargers catch a break with Charles being on the sideline for the Chiefs. Kansas City will likely use a running back by committee approach in Week 3, but if the Chargers can put pressure on Matt Cassel, it will once again be a long day for K.C. Fantasy owners should get San Diego active for this Sunday as they are a No. 1 DST option.
News: Entering Sunday's game against the quick New England offense, San Diego mapped out a plan to slow QB Tom Brady in the no-huddle offense. It didn't work out according to plan. Brady became the first player in NFL history to follow a 500-yard passing performance with a 400-yard game, and the Patriots scored 30 points for the 10th straight regular-season game in the Chargers' 35-21 loss in Week 2 on Sunday. San Diego could not adequately disrupt Brady and reached him for just two sacks while failing to record an interception.
Analysis: The Chargers struggled keeping pace with the New England offense the entire game and quickly found themselves in a 20-7 hole at halftime. San Diego also failed to create a turnover as the Patriots finished with 504 total yards of offense -- 34 more than the total by the Chargers. After not permitting a point during the second half in Week 1, San Diego was on the hook for 15 fourth-quarter points Sunday. Fantasy owners should expect a rebound in Week 3 when the Chargers face Kansas City, which lost Jamaal Charles to an injury.
News: After watching New England QB Tom Brady shred the Miami secondary for 517 passing yards last Monday, San Diego LB Takeo Spikes identified the Chargers' biggest challenge in their Week 2 matchup: the no-huddle offense. We have to get lined up, said Spikes, who paced the team with 11 tackles in his San Diego debut. We cant go out there and let them dictate the pace. Just get lined up and find away to get our calls in."
Analysis: The Chargers overcame a 10-point halftime deficit in their Week 1 matchup against Minnesota, but cannot fall into the same situation against the Patriots, who racked up 38 points on the Dolphins. We need to come out fast, San Diego coach Norv Turner said. We need to keep the ball away from them and keep them out of the end zone the best we can. That task will certainly be a difficult one for the Chargers as New England has also won nine straight home openers. Fantasy owners should consider San Diego a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 2.
News: During his last meeting against San Diego, star RB Adrian Peterson set the NFL single-game record with 296 yards as a rookie in 2007. The Chargers were destined not to let Peterson run loose again, especially after San Diego LB Takeo Spikes said he heard that Peterson predicted he was going to rush for 200 yards. "We really felt disrespected," Spikes said. San Diego limited Peterson to a total of 98 yards, including just 24 in the entire second half, as the Chargers held the Vikings scoreless after halftime.
Analysis: Before locking up in the second half, San Diego was taken by surprise on the first play of the game. Percy Harvin returned the opening kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown, showing that the Chargers hadn't fully erased their special teams nightmare of 2010, which cost them a playoff berth. They also lost Nate Kaeding to a season-ending injury on the play. San Diego was still able to pursue QB Donovan McNabb for two sacks and he managed just one completion in the second half. Consider the Chargers a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 2 at New England.
News: While the San Diego offense is looking to remain among the best in the NFL, so is the Chargers defense after adding experience in linebackers Nail Diggs and Takeo Spikes. However, the team did lose LB Kevin Burnett to Miami during the offseason. The biggest concern we have at the linebacker position is our youth, Turner told the teams official website. San Diego opens Week 1 against Minnesota on Sunday.
Analysis: The Chargers feasted on weak opponents, including within its own division of the AFC West, to finish with one of the NFL's top-ranked defenses last season. San Diego, which finished with an astounding 47 sacks last year, will be tasked with stopping Vikings star RB Adrian Peterson. The Chargers limited opponents to just 93.8 rushing yards last season their secondary averaged an interception per game. Fantasy owners should consider the San Diego DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option against Minnesota.
News: The Chargers took Illinois DT Corey Liuget with the 18th pick overall in the NFL draft , bulking up their defensive line. He was a second-team All-Big Ten pick in 2010, when he had 4 1/2 sacks and 63 tackles. Liuget's most outstanding quality is toughness, said Jimmy Raye, the Chargers' director of player personnel. "I think we were looking for a guy that had some edge," Raye said. "He's a guy that plays with a lot of passion. He is a physical player. He's one of those guys we thought could knock people back off the ball. We wanted to get a little more physical up front. We wanted to bring more of a presence to our defensive front at the end position and I think we addressed that."
Analysis: Liuget will help hold down the run, which is important for the Chargers considering they play in the same division as Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden and Knowshon Moreno. If he pans out, he'll make this DST even better than they already are. We like the Chargers as a late-round value pick thanks in part to their Week 1 matchup against the QB-challenged (for now) Vikings. Owners can get off to a good start with the Chargers DST if they miss on the elite options.
News: On Friday, Greg Manusky has reached agreement to be the Chargers' defensive coordinator. Manusky spent the past four years as the 49ers defensive coordinator, including the past two seasons actually calling plays for their 3-4 defense, the same system the Chargers run. Manusky spent 2002-06 coaching the Chargers linebackers. The Chargers wanted to retain Manusky after the 2006 season but lost him during the uncertainty before Marty Schottenheimer was fired.
Analysis: The Chargers defense should have the same look in 2011 as it did in 2010. The secondary is talented and very skilled and the front seven is also good. The DST finished as a Top 10 unit in Fantasy play last season and are worth drafting late in drafts this summer.
News: With Ron Rivera off to coach the Panthers, the Chargers are without a defensive coordinator. In a series of statements sent to the media, the team not only praised Rivera for getting his first head-coaching job but also said they plan on finding a replacement soon. Secondary coach Steve Wilks and linebackers coach John Pagano are expected to interview for the job, and former Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt, a good friend of head coach Norv Turner, could also factor into the hiring process.
Analysis: Whoever coaches the Chargers defense in 2011 won't have a terribly tough job to do -- the secondary is talented and very skilled and the front seven is also good. The DST finished as a Top 10 unit in Fantasy play last season and are worth drafting late in drafts this summer.
News: Aside from struggling to effectively stop Denver QB Tim Tebow, the San Diego defense turned in another sterling performance in its 33-28 victory in Week 17. The Chargers allowed 337 total yards in Sunday's game but just 52 yards to players other than Tebow. The rookie quarterback burned San Diego's second-ranked rush defense for 94 rushing yards -- 42 yards more than the combined total of Denver's running backs (52) -- and accounted for three total touchdowns, including one rushing score. It was just the second rushing touchdown the Chargers surrendered to an opposing quarterback this season. Sunday's game was also the most points San Diego allowed in a win as its sterling defense held the last four opponents it has defeated to just 35 points (8.6 points per game).
Analysis: The Chargers entered the season finale with 10 sacks in their last three games but managed to take down Tebow only three times Sunday. Tebow, who was starting only his third game of the season, surprisingly became only the fourth quarterback to record multiple passing touchdowns against San Diego this season. The Chargers seemed content to make the inexperienced rookie beat them on his own, especially with star running back Knowshon Moreno nursing a rib injury. He nearly did while collecting more rushing yards than all of the previous opposing quarterbacks to face San Diego managed this season (77 yards). Still, the Chargers have an outstanding young corps of defensive players and should again be one of the first DSTs off the board in 2011 Fantasy drafts.
News: Entering its second meeting of the season, the San Diego defense will be seeking a repeat of its previous dominating performance against lowly Denver in Week 17. The Chargers held the Broncos to less than less than 250 total yards of offense and rolled to a 35-14 victory in Week 11. And while San Diego didn't force many turnovers (just one interception) in that game, the defense did record five sacks -- one of five outings this season the Chargers have registered four-plus sacks. San Diego has also held two of its last three opponents under 10 points, including its only shutout of the season in Week 14 against Kansas City.
Analysis: The Chargers haven't produced many interceptions recently (one pick in the last four games) but will face Broncos rookie quarterback Tim Tebow in Sunday's game. Tebow is still unproven and has yet to throw more than 29 passes in either of his two starts this season. San Diego is allowing an NFL-low 267 yards per game and just 177 yards passing and will likely be rushing Tebow often while attempting to add to its league-leading 44 sacks. Denver has scored just five touchdowns and amassed 47 points in Tebow's two games as starting quarterback. Consider the Chargers a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in Week 17.
News: San Diego was focused on stopping RB Cedric Benson in Week 16, which he gained just 52 yards. But as a team Cincinnati accumulated 102 rushing yards on a windy Sunday in Cincy. They also allowed QB Carson Palmer to have a solid outing. Palmer finished with a career-best passer rating of 157.2, just shy of a perfect 158.3. He completed 16 of 21 for 269 yards without an interception. San Diego entered with the best defense in the NFL, but managed just one turnover in the game. They couldn't get to Palmer -- who was without his top two receivers -- and allowed young players to make big plays. Plus punter Mike Scifres had an awful day kicking the ball, giving the Bengals prime field position. Cincinnati would win the game, 34-20.
Analysis: The Chargers had their game plan, but only managed to do part of it. The Bengals offense banged up and using a lot of new faces, but managed to get it done on Sunday. San Diego faces Denver in Week 17, but after this weeks performance any owners still alive in the playoffs will likely be down on the Chargers DST. They are still worth using in Fantasy, but will likely be overlooked next week.
News: San Diego will focus on Cincinnati's RB Cedric Benson in Week 16. Benson is coming off a season-high 150 rushing yards. Plus the Bengals are 30-2 under coach Marvin Lewis when they have an individual rusher with 25 or more carries. That includes a 10-1 mark when Benson has carried 25 or more times. This week, more than any, we are going to have to stop the run, LB Kevin Burnett said on Thursday. We are going to sellout and stop the run and worry about stopping the pass later. The Chargers are allowing just 89.4 rushing yards and 170.4 passing yards per game. The defense has focused on stopping the run the last two games and in the process has only allowed seven points.
Analysis: Aiming at stopping the run isn't a bad idea, especially since the Bengals' receiving corps is banged up -- Terrell Owns is on the shelf and Chad Ochocinco is dealing with an injury. San Diego has the best defense in the NFL and get a team in Cincinnati that has been a huge disappointment. Fantasy owners in all formats should keep the Chargers DST active as they are a clear-cut No. 1 option for Week 16.
News: The Chargers shut out the Chiefs last week, and it appeared they were on their way to the same result against the 49ers in Week 15, but RB Brian Westbrook scored on a 3-yard run with less than five minutes left in the game. "We wanted it bad," linebacker Brandon Siler said of the near-shutout. "We were saying on the sideline, 'Don't give up anything cheap.' It hurts a little bit, but I think we already know we're a good defense. We proved that." San Diego held San Francisco to just 192 total yards and sacked QB Alex Smith six times via six different players, and intercepted him late in the game when DB Steve Gregory stepped in front of a pass intended for Ted Ginn Jr.Analysis: The Chargers defense came into the game as the NFL's No. 1 unit, and Thursday night further validated the ranking. San Diego held their opponents to a 16 percent conversion rate on 3rd-down (2 for 12) and an average of just 3.8 yards per play. Most importantly, they held the 'Niners to just seven points, something that couples with an explosive offense to form a winning formula. In Week 16, they face a much better offense in the Bengals, who have the potential to be explosive. Still, they have underachieved this season and the 'Bolts are the NFL's best unit. Continue to start them in all Fantasy formats heading into that matchup.
News: The Chargers went into last week's game against the Chiefs as the league's top defense, and they shut out Kansas City after holding them to 67 total yards. In Week 15, they face a team with a similar style to that of the Chiefs -- the 49ers. San Francisco wants to establish a run game, but has a good enough passing game to keep defense's honest (although KC started backup QB Brodie Croyle). The 49ers lost versatile RB Frank Gore (hip) for the season, so their style takes a hit. Instead, they split carries between Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon. QB Alex Smith is again under center and has re-established his connection with TE Vernon Davis - the two connected for 70 yards and a touchdown last week.
Analysis: The Chargers defense keyed on an unstable Kansas City offense last week and took advantage of a backup QB. It will not be that easy on Thursday night, but Smith is no assassin through the air at the same time. He looked better last week -- throwing three TDs without an interception -- but that came against one of the NFL's worst pass defenses. The Chargers are No. 1 in that category and has shut down elite passing games like the Patriots, Colts and Texans this season. The 49ers will have to rely on the 1-2 punch of Westbrook and Dixon to find success against San Diego, and we don't see it happening. Consider the Chargers DST to be a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 15.
News: The San Diego defense recorded one of the top performances in franchise history and routed visiting Kansas City in Week 14. The Chargers held the Chiefs to 67 total yards -- the second-fewest in team history (58 yards against Oakland on Oct. 22, 1961) -- and just five first downs the entire game. San Diego was so dominant throughout Sunday's game that Kansas City had just 57 total yards until a 10-yard gain on a fourth-down play with 2:00 remaining in the fourth quarter. Had the Chiefs not converted on that play, they would have finished with the fewest yards in team history (61). The Chargers also tallied four sacks against replacement quarterback Brodie Croyle to bring their season total to 38 and eclipsing last year's mark of 35 sacks. "Defensively, I'm not sure that you could play any better than that," said Chargers coach Norv Turner, who gave game balls to the offensive and defensive lines.
Analysis: This was clearly the best game of the season for the Chargers -- and one of the finest performances in the entire NFL this year. San Diego feasted on the ineffectiveness of Croyle, who was replacing Matt Cassel (illness) in the lineup and making his first start since Week 1 of last season, and yielded just 19 passing yards. Kansas City held the ball for only 19:50, the first time this season it has finished less than 20 minutes in possession time. San Diego, which lost in the teams' first meeting in Week 1, certainly earned its revenge and claimed its first regular-season shutout win over the Chiefs. After recording their first shutout since Sept. 11, 2006, the Chargers could make for a top Fantasy option in Week 15 against San Francisco.
News: San Diego's normally reliable rush defense will attempt to rebound from a poor showing in its Week 14 matchup against Kansas City on Sunday. The Chargers, who are ranked fifth in the NFL in rushing yards allowed this season (95.3), surrendered 251 yards on the ground in a 28-13 loss to Oakland in Week 13. But the task won't be easy. San Diego will have to stop Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who's third in the NFL with 1,137 rushing yards. Charles' backup, Thomas Jones, is also having a solid season with 765 yards, and the two have combined for eight rushing scores. What's more, Kansas City could increase its attempts Sunday with starting quarterback Matt Cassel unlikely to play in the game and leaving Brodie Croyle under center.
Analysis: The Chargers would certainly welcome Croyle as the Chiefs' starting quarterback Sunday. Croyle, who has yet to play a snap this season, has not been on the field since Dec. 6, 2009 -- a span of 16 games. San Diego, which has just two sacks in its last two games, will likely use an assortment of blitz packages against Croyle, forcing the rusty quarterback to beat them in the air. Despite the breakdown against Oakland, the Chargers will look to bottle up Charles, who had 92 yards and a touchdown in the teams' first meeting. Despite facing Kansas City's top-ranked rushing game, San Diego has allowed just three 100-yard rushers this season. Consider the Chargers a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 14 with great upside if Croyle does indeed get the nod.
News: The Chargers defense did a decent job against the Raiders passing game in Week 13, but they were unable to stop the run. San Diego allowed Oakland to run for 251 yards and three touchdowns in the 28-13 loss. RBs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush each had 90-plus yards rushing a score. The Chargers were able to bring down QB Jason Campbell once, but they gave up 117 yards and a touchdown through the air. DB Quentin Jammer had a forced fumble and LB Shaun Phillips had a fumble reception in the defeat.
Analysis: The Chargers hadn't given up more than 14 points in their last three games but they could not slow down the Raiders running game in Week 13. That's surprising considering San Diego entered Sunday ranked third in the league against the run. While the Chargers have been banged up on defense in recent weeks, they will need to start causing more turnovers to remain a viable Fantasy option. With Kansas City up next on the schedule, consider the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 14. When the division foes met in Week 1, San Diego gave up 21 points and just 197 yards of total offense.
News: The Chargers defense has played well recently and will face a Raiders offense in Week 13 that has struggled in their last two outings. Oakland has scored just 20 total points in their last two games. The Raiders sport the fifth-best rushing attack in the NFL, but are ranked 27th in passing. San Diego have been solid on defense, ranking second in the league against the pass and third in stopping the run.
Analysis: The Chargers dominated the Raiders when the teams met in Week 5, holding Oakland to 18 points on offense and 279 total yards. The key to Sunday's came will be slowing down Oakland's running game, in particular Darren McFadden and Michael Bush. Both backs are coming off slow games so they will want to get back on track against the division rival. But San Diego is only giving up 81.1 yards per game on the ground this season and should be able to slow them down. Considering the matchup, the Chargers DST should be used as a No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 13.
News: The Chargers defense came into the Week 12 game against the Colts with the No. 1 defensive unit in the NFL. They finished the game proving it. Not only did they hold the Colts high-powered offense to 303 total yards, but they created five turnovers. They pressured QB Peyton Manning all night long, forcing him into four interceptions, resulting in 20 points ultimately for San Diego. When Kevin Burnett and Eric Weddle intercepted Manning, they both found their way to the end zone."To come up with the big plays, when you're scoring on defense and getting takeaways, it's a good feeling," coach Norv Turner said. The Colts ground game was even worse, totaling just 24 yards on 13 attempts, all by RB Donald Brown.
Analysis: San Diego has always seemed to have Manning's number in recent years. In 2007, he threw a career-worst six interceptions to Charger defenders and Sunday night he added four more. The defense seemed to adjust after the Colts scored rather easily on their opening drive. In Week 13, they will look for a similar statement effort against the Raiders. The two teams met in Week 5 and San Diego shut Oakland's offense down, limiting them to 168 yards. However, the special teams had two punts blocked and the Raiders added a late defensive score to win the game 35-27. We expect the second meeting to be a bit different. Consider the Chargers DST to be a must-start Fantasy option heading into that matchup.
News: The Chargers defense is the top unit in the NFL against the pass, and in the Week 12 game against the Colts, they will have a chance to prove it. Last week, they sacked Denver QBs five times, which always helps the secondary. Indianapolis has allowed just 12 sacks all year on QB Peyton Manning, but that's the only way to slow him down. If they can't get to him, he will likely gash them for upwards of 300 yards, a feat that the Chargers have not allowed a single QB to reach this year.
Analysis: The consistent play of Shaun Phillips has been the key to the Chargers pass rush, he managed two sacks last week. "He is a guy that can come off the edge on you with speed, Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. They also use him in a couple of these walk-around positions." The secondary has to contribute and take advantage of the pressure the front seven is applying. Last week, Antoine Cason did that, picking off a Kyle Orton pass. Still, these are the Colts they face on Sunday night and it will be much tougher for the Chargers to produce a repeat effort. Consider other options than the Chargers DST in Fantasy play, just for this week.
News: The Chargers defense did not get off to a good start in Week 11 against the Broncos, but they were able to buckle down to make some big stops. Denver marched down the field and scored a touchdown on their first drive of the game, but San Diego did not allow them to score again until 8:48 left in the fourth quarter. The Chargers limited the Broncos potent offense by sacking QB Kyle Orton five times and picking him off once. DB Antoine Cason, who intercepted a pass, felt the linebacking corps helped out the secondary with consistent pressure on Orton. Those guys did a hell of a job, Cason said. Thats what weve been stressing for a couple weeks; getting pressure. San Diego held Denver to 235 yards of total offense in the 35-14 win.
Analysis: The Chargers entered Week 11 with the No.1 ranked pass defense in the NFL and lived up to their reputation in the victory. They held the Broncos to just 217 yards through the air. The key to the game was putting pressure on Orton and San Diego did so extremely well. The Chargers have allowed more than 30 points in a game only once this season but will have a tough task in Week 12 against the Colts. Indianapolis is averaging 26.8 points per game. The Chargers DST continues to produce and should be viewed as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 12.
News: The Chargers defense has not allowed a team to score more than 25 points so far this season but will face a tough task in Week 11 with the Broncos potent passing offense. Denver ranks No.2 in the NFL in passing, averaging over 296 yards per game, while San Diego enters Monday's matchup ranked third in the league against the pass. In two games between the division foes last season, the Chargers held the Broncos to 37 combined points.
Analysis: The Chargers DST continues to be one of the better options in the league but will have their hands full on Monday night. The Broncos love to throw the ball around but have some special run packages inside the red zone that have been effective in recent weeks. This game has all the makings of a shootout but San Diego knows how to force turnovers and could be able to slow down Denver. Consider the Chargers a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against the Broncos in Week 11.
News: The Chargers DST played well in Week 9 at Houston. The Chargers had two sacks on QB Matt Schaub (one each from Donald Strickland and Antonio Garay) and one interception from Paul Oliver. On special teams, Donald Brown had four kickoff returns for 114 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST is a solid unit in all leagues. San Diego is on a bye in Week 10 before facing Denver in Week 11. Consider the Chargers a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against the Broncos following the bye week.
News: The Chargers DST comes into Week 9 at Houston looking to come after QB Matt Schaub. The Chargers, who are No. 1 in pass defense, are No. 2 in sacks with 25. Schaub has been sacked 19 times, including eight in his past three games. The Chargers did not have a sack in Week 8 against Tennessee, which was the first time they went without a sack, but they have multiple sacks in six games this season.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has no interceptions in their past four games, but Schaub has six on the year. This could be a good week to count on the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option. They only have one game with double digits in Fantasy points in their past four games, but they might be able to rebound based on the matchup against Houston's poor offensive line.
News: The Chargers defense did a solid job against the running game in Week 8 against the Titans, but they did not have the same success against the pass. San Diego, who entered the game with the No. 4 run defense in the league, gave up a 29-yard touchdown run to Chris Johnson but held Tennessee to just 65 yards rushing in the 33-25 win. However, the Chargers were burned through the air, allowing 305 yards passing and two touchdowns to both QBs Vince Young and Kerry Collins.
Analysis: The Chargers DST did not force a turnover or earn a sack in Week 8 but they were still able to come away with the win. The 305 passing yards was nearly 150 more than their average coming into the game but their run defense rank should go down with the stellar performance. San Diego's pass defense will be put to the test in Week 9 against the Texans as Houston entered Sunday with the 11th ranked passing offense in the league, averaging 239 yards per game. Continue to view the Chargers DST as a solid option in most formats.
News: The Chargers welcome the Titans in Week 8 and match up pretty well against a team that likes to run the ball. San Diego ranks fourth in the league against the run, giving up an average of just under 86 yards per game, while Tennessee averages over 131 yards on the ground per contest. Along with having a stout run defense, the Chargers rank No. 1 in the NFL against the pass while their opponent produces near the bottom of the league (29th).
Analysis: The Chargers DST has almost single-handedly kept their team afloat this season and will have the tough task of stopping All-Pro RB Chris Johnson in Week 8. Johnson carried the ball 21 times for 142 yards and a touchdown in his only game against San Diego in his career while Tennessee has given up an average of 6.71 Fantasy points to opposing DSTs this season. QB Vince Young is also expected to play on Sunday so add his scrambling ability to the threat. The Chargers DST continues to produce and should be viewed as a viable option in all leagues for Week 8.
News: Chargers DST held New England to just 179 total net yards but surrendered 23 points in Week 7. The unit held Tom Brady to just 159 yards passing and recorded four sacks in the 23-20 loss. However, San Diego was unable to force any turnovers and allowed the Patriots to go on a 17-play, 79 yard touchdown drive that chewed 8.35 off the clock in the second half. However, the Chargers defense gave the offense a chance to win when they stopped New England on a fourth-and-1 at mid field with two minutes left to play.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has played well this season and while Sunday wasn't the units best game, they still gave their team a chance to win. San Diego will face one of the game's best rushers in Chris Johnson as the Titans come to town in Week 8. Even though Vince Young's status remains in question, Tennessee has proved they can move the ball and score without him. Still, San Diego has been good all year at stopping the run and can be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST against the Titans.

News: The Chargers boast the fifth highest ranked DST heading into their Week 7 matchup against the Patriots. The unit has racked up 87 Fantasy points to date while racking up seven interception, three recovered fumbles, a safety and one defensive touchdown. They face a Patriots team that is ranked 10th in total offense (354.2 ypg) and is averaging 30.8 points per game. However, the Chargers are ranked No. 1 in pass defense and have only allowed an average of 11.3 Fantasy points to opposing WRs and 9.3 Fantasy points to opposing QBs.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has played well this season, but the unit has yet faced an offense that is as potent as New Englands. Even with Randy Moss out of the picture, the Patriots have plenty of fire power on offense and lead the NFL in scoring. Still, the Chargers have the talent on defense to matchup with New England and while they might surrender some points on Sunday, Fantasy owners can still consider them solid No. 2 Fantasy DST against the Patriots.
News: The Rams did not turn the ball over in a 20-17 win over the Chargers in Week 6, but the San Diego defense played an important role nonetheless. After allowing the Rams to forge ahead 17-0 in the second quarter, the Chargers' defense held them to only three points and 94 total net yards in the second half. The Rams mustered a total of 300 net yards overall. The Chargers sacked Rams QB Sam Bradford three times on the afternoon.
Analysis: The Chargers have ranked among the top DSTs this season and did a respectable job of containing a Rams offense that had averaged 318 total net yards coming into Week 6. They face a slightly tougher task in Week 7, going up against the Patriots, but the Chargers remain one of the best DSTs in Fantasy. Keep them active for the coming week.
News: After a Week 5 loss to Oakland in which the Raiders put up 35 points, the Chargers fell from the top spot in the DST rankings to a tie for second place with the Titans. However, they have a Week 6 matchup against the Rams that could catapult them back to the No. 1 ranking. The Rams are in the bottom half of the team rankings for points scored against and total offensive yardage allowed. Last week, a mediocre Lions' defense held the Rams to a pair of field goals.
Analysis: Despite the down Week 5 performance, the Chargers remain one of the best DST options in Fantasy. Especially with a favorable matchup in Week 6, owners should keep the Chargers DST active in all formats.
News: The Chargers DST, which entered Week 5 as the top unit in the league, took a hit against the Raiders on Sunday. The hit was largely to the team's pride as the Raiders won the game, 35-27. The Chargers DST actually limited Oakland to just 279 yards of offense in the game, but did not force a single Oakland turnover. While they knocked Bruce Gradkowski from the game, Jason Campbell entered and did enough to beat them. The Chargers finished with three sacks.
Analysis: San Diego managed nine sacks and a defensive touchdown in the Week 4 win over Arizona. The Week 5 game was definitely a different animal. Still, the Chargers DST has been an outstanding option all season and should bounce back in Week 6 at St. Louis, which got pounded by the Lions in Week 5. Start the Chargers DST in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Chargers currently own the top-ranked defense and offense in the league heading into the Week 5 game in Oakland. The Chargers DST is tied with Pittsburgh's for the most Fantasy points scored as only three teams have allowed fewer total yards per game and only one -- the Falcons -- has more interceptions than San Diego's seven. The Chargers' 15 sacks are good enough for fourth in the NFL behind three teams tied at 16. The Chargers DST is coming off a game in Week 4 in which they gave up just four points and 124 yards and managed three forced turnovers with an incredible nine sacks and a defensive touchdown against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Chargers DST might be a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 5 against any opposing offense. Fortunately for Fantasy owners who have the Chargers, the offense they are facing is one of the more units in the NFL. Only three NFL teams are affording opposing DSTs more interceptions or sacks per game and Oakland's Bruce Gradkowski was sacked four times with two picks Week 4 by the Texans. Oakland's offense allows solid Fantasy points to opposing DSTs and there hasn't been a better Fantasy DST than San Diego's this season. Consider the Chargers DST a No. 1 Fantasy unit for Week 5.
News: The Chargers DST dominated the Cardinals in the 41-10 rout in Week 5. LB Shaun Phillips led the defense with four sacks on his own, a part of the team's nine on the day. The Chargers came into Week 4 with only six sacks on the year. Phillips also intercepted QB Derek Anderson in the second quarter and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. They also picked Anderson on the opening drive of the game and strip-sacked QB Max Hall, DL Luis Castillo recovered. The defense held the Cardinals to just 124 yards on the day, and did not allow a TD.
Analysis: The defense looked impenetrable all afternoon as the Cardinals did not even sniff the end zone offensively. They held WR Larry Fitzgerald in check (56 yards receiving) and forced Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt to pull starting QB Derek Anderson because of his two interceptions thrown in the first half. The Chargers then terrorized rookie QB Max Hall, sacking him six times. The biggest concern coming into the game for the Chargers was kick coverage, and the team improved immensely after giving up two kick return TDs in Week 3. The Chargers travel to Oakland in Week 5, to take on a Raider offense that amassed 363 yards in Week 4 against the Texans. The Chargers DST should remain a No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 5.

News: The Week 3 loss to the Seahawks brought much attention on the Chargers DST as they prepare for Week 4 against the Cardinals. They allowed RB Leon Washington to return two kickoffs for touchdowns. In Week 1, Dexter McCluster returned a punt 94 yards for a TD against the Chargers. Coach Norv Turner is willing to mix in some starting players to improve the abysmal coverage untis to try and limit the game-changing plays. "One of the ways to address it is to get some guys who have done a great job in the past who aren't featured on the coverage teams. Obviously, I'm talking about guys who are starting players who have been specials teams' players in the past," Turner said. Cardinals kick returner LaRod Stephens-Howling returned a kickoff 102 yards in Week 3 against the Raiders.
Analysis: The defensive numbers the Chargers have put up get lost in all of the special teams discussion. They rank fourth in the NFL in total defense, allowing 272.7 yards per game. 21 of the 61 points they have allowed though three games are a direct product of the special team coverage units. Expect the Chargers to try and solve the problem by any means necessary in Week 4 against the Cardinals, who have Stephens-Howling liking his chops to return a kick against San Diego after the return TD from Week 3. With the defense playing so well, consider the Chargers DST a No. 1 Fantasy option despite the kick coverage.
News: San Diego's defense held Seattle to 288 total yards of offense in Sunday's loss, sacking Matt Hasselbeck three times and picking him off once. One of the sacks resulted in a safety after Seattle was pinned deep on their side of the field after a Golden Tate fair catch on a punt. Unfortunately the team's effort on special teams was not as good. The allowed RB Leon Washington to return two kicks -- one 101 yards and the other 99 yards -- for scores. Receiver Patrick Crayton indicated the special teams problems were the result of players not taking their responsibilities seriously. "Right now, [special teams] coach [Steve] Crosby is [ticked] off. I don't blame him. The guys who are sitting in the meetings are not taking him seriously when he tells you to do a certain thing on a kickoff," a frustrated Crayton said. "He's been in this league I don't know how many years. He's been around a while for a reason, obviously. You have to take this stuff seriously." The Chargers also recovered a Deion Branch fumble on a play that had to be overturned by review.
Analysis: Well, San Diego's defense played good, but the special teams stunk it up. For the Chargers DST to be considered a valuable Fantasy commodity, they will have to work some kinks out heading into Week 4. They have Arizona on deck, a team that has struggled offensively. With a favorable matchup, the Chargers should get one more look as a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: Seattle (1-1) opened Pete Carroll's tenure with a 31-6 rout of San Francisco, but wasn't able to sustain that momentum in a 31-14 defeat to Denver last week. The Seahawks committed four turnovers - three coming on Matt Hasselbeck interceptions. With San Diego coming off a game where they forced six turnovers, the Seahawks could be in trouble. The Chargers grabbed four interceptions - two by Antoine Cason - and recovered a pair of fumbles in a 38-13 home victory over Jacksonville last week.
Analysis: San Diego's defense is allowing 273.5 yards of offense per game through the first two weeks of the season. Seattle's offense is producing only slightly more than the Chargers are allowing, but have had two totally opposite games. If San Diego can pressure Hasselbeck, he may have another three interception game. We view San Diego as a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 3 as the Seahawks try to find an identity on offense.
News: Cornerback Antoine Cason leaped for the ball as if he were a wide receiver, and the turnover derby was on. Cason and the San Diego Chargers forced the Jacksonville Jaguars into six turnovers on Sunday. The turnovers tied Jacksonville's team record and led to 17 points for the Chargers. "A lot of the time it takes the air out of the team and of course with the crowd behind us, it puts life into us," said Cason, who had two interceptions and forced a fumble. "It changes momentum." Antwan Applewhite, Larry English and Shawne Merriman all played well against the Jaguars and after the game, coach Norv Turner indicated that the three will share responsibility at outside linebacker. Merriman appeared O.K. with that. "It makes it easier on me," Merriman said.
Analysis: San Diego frustrated the Jaguars all day and added two sacks for good measure. They gave up a total of 364 yards to Jacksonville, but a good chunk of that came in the fourth quarter when the game was already decided. The Chargers also held Maurice Jones-Drew to 31 yards on the ground and one reception. If they can do that to one of the better backs in the league, imagine what they'll do against Seattle's trio of backs in Week 3. Seattle turned the ball over four times in Week 2, so the Chargers will be aiming for another solid performance. Fantasy owners should view them as a decent No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 3.
News: The Chargers gave up 21 points to the Chiefs in Week 1 with two big plays coming on special teams. San Diego allowed 56-yard touchdown run to Jamaal Charles and a 2-yard TD pass to Tony Moeaki in the first half but was otherwise able to keep Kansas City's offense in check. A Javier Arenas 36-yard punt return set up the Moeaki score and rookie Dexter McCluster returned a 94-yard punt for a TD. "The disappointment for me comes obviously from our [kick] coverage teams. We think that should be a strength for us and something we work hard at," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. The Chargers, who gave up just 197 yards of total offense, recorded one sack and three tackles for loss in the defeat.
Analysis: The Chargers D did a pretty good job in Week 1 but their special teams gave up some big plays. San Diego was without Shawne Merriman (Achilles') for Monday's opener, but he would have not made a difference on punt returns. They face off against a Jaguars team in Week 2 that was able to rush for 134 yards in the opener. Chargers DST can be considered a low-end DST heading into Week 2.
News: The Chargers defense faces division rival Kansas City in Week 1 on Monday Night Football. The Chargers had the 11th best scoring defense (20.0 ppg) last season and was a middle of the pack team in yards allowed (327.0 ypg), but fared very well against the Chiefs. In two meetings last season, the Chargers held the Chiefs to 21 combined points and just 487 yards of total offense while causing seven turnovers.
Analysis: The Chargers could be without Shawne Merriman (Achilles') for Monday's opener, but will fill that void with Larry English. San Diego's defense created 11 turnovers and only allowed more than 20 points in just one of their four contests. While Kansas City's offense should be better this season, San Diego's defense has given them fits in past. There is always room for improvement on defense, but Chargers DST can be considered a low-end DST heading into Week 1.
News: It seems more likely OLB Shawne Merriman (Achilles') will miss the first couple games of the season. Coach Norv Turner did not specifically commit to Merriman not playing, but he did indicate that it would take Merriman some time to round into playing shape after he resumes practicing. He has been battling Larry English at right outside linebacker.
Analysis: Up until a 36-21 loss to the Saints on Saturday, the Chargers defense seemed to be getting along just fine without Merriman in the preseason. San Diego had allowed just 26 points in its first two preseason games. However, English's rapid development is probably allowing San Diego to be patient with Merriman, who is still unhappy with his current contract. The Chargers had the 11th best scoring defense (20.0 ppg) last season and was a middle of the pack team in yards allowed (327.0 ypg). Clearly, there is some room for improvement, so think of the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option. It does help their cause that they still have an explosive kick returner in Darren Sproles.
News:Shawne Merriman ended his holdout Friday and signed his $3,269,000, one-year tender with the San Diego Chargers. The star outside linebacker had been staying away from training camp because he apparently wanted assurances he won't be traded this season. Merriman broke the news in a tweet. "Just signed my tender and glad to be back with my teammates thanks to everyone," he wrote. The team confirmed it in a news release about an hour later. The Chargers had a walkthrough scheduled for late Friday morning in advance of their exhibition opener Saturday night against the Chicago Bears. It'll be the Chargers' first action since their embarrassing 17-14 playoff loss to the New York Jets.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has the chance to play well in 2010, especially with the return of Merriman.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Chargers coach Norv Turner has been pleased in the work of his defense in training camp, especially between those participating in the spirited competition along the line. "I'm seeing improvement by the young players along the defensive line which is encouraging," he said. "And it seems like we're getting better in the secondary every day. I'm proud of what that group has accomplished from top to bottom (on the depth chart)."
Analysis: The improvement in the defensive play this preseason could be related to the team's familiarity with third-year defensive coordinator Ron Riveras system. There is still a gaping hole to fill at linebacker until Shawne Merriman ends his holdout and reports for duty. But San Diego is preparing for the season, with or without Merriman.
News: Chargers DE Luis Castillo believes one of the reasons why the defense is having a good training camp so far is that the players are familiar with third-year defensive coordinator Ron Riveras system. We are not trying to learn it, said Castillo. We are trying to refine it. Instead of overhaul it like we have in the past with 3 different coordinators in 6 years.
Analysis: The Chargers have some serious question marks on defense after losing NT Jamal Williams and CB Antonio Cromartie during the offseason, and LB Shawne Merriman currently staying away from training camp. But they're still a talented group, and if second-year LB Larry English can come close to reaching his lofty potential, he could be an adequate replacement for Merriman, who hasn't been himself the past two years. San Diego's DST should be viewed as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News:The Sports Xchange reports A.J. Smith, the Chargers' dour and gruff general manager, is done talking about Marcus McNeill, Vincent Jackson and Shawne Merriman. Those three players, who account for a combined six Pro Bowl selections, haven't signed their contracts. Merriman's stance, Smith said, is more about his lack of commitment from the Chargers than the dollar figures on his one-year deal. Merriman complained that he doesn't feel wanted by the Chargers; that he is tired of constantly being on the trading block; that he wants a defense built around him. "It was very disappointing to hear Shawne's demands and desires regarding the Chargers," Smith told the media. "But it certainly is his right to voice them. We will not guarantee him that he won't be traded. That is not in the best interest of the organization."
Analysis: The Chargers would love, in some ways, for Merriman to be the focal point of the defense. But the truth is the player who wrecked havoc on the NFL and was named to the Pro Bowl in his first three seasons -- that Shawne Merriman -- hasn't been seen of late. In the past two years -- the majority of one he missed by delaying knee surgery -- Merriman shows but four sacks. Instead of being a disruptive, game-changing force on defense, Merriman has become a complementary player. "We will not be building a defense around Shawne," Smith added. "Our hope was that he would become an integral part of our defense. Obviously he has a lot on his mind going into the season. He will have to work that out with his agent." If Merriman chooses not to play in 2010, the Chargers can move on with the likes of Larry English and Jyles Tucker at right outside linebacker. The Chargers DST remains a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option worth taking in the late rounds on Draft Day.
News: Chargers LB Shawne Merriman will not report for the start of training camp, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Merriman has yet to sign the one-year tender offered by management, but insisted his holdout is not about money. I need to know Im not going to be on the trade block every three weeks," he said. "The question is do I have stability enough to go play football and not worry about the other things. Its not about me wanting more money. I will show what I deserve. I dont have to ask for it. I feel like Ive proved what Im worth, and I will still prove it. To me, it really comes down to, Am I on the trading block this week? The third week of the season, am I on the block? Where is that comfortability for me?"
Analysis: It's hard to imagine Merriman sitting out this season, so expect him to play for the Bolts in 2010. However, after being slowed by injuries the past two seasons that limited his production, he should no longer be viewed as an elite Fantasy option at LB. The Chargers need more sacks from this unit than they got in 2009, but second-year LB Larry English could be the one to pick up the slack. Plan on drafting the Chargers DST with a late-round pick this season.
News: The Chargers DST, which lost NT Jamal Williams and CB Antonio Cromartie this offseason, got some help on defense in the NFL Draft. The Chargers drafted LB Donald Butler in Round 3, S Darrell Stuckey in Round 4 and DT Cam Thomas in Round 5.
Analysis: Thomas might be the biggest addition to the defense to help improve against stopping the run. The Chargers DST has the chance to be a quality unit, but they should be considered a low-end No. 1 option at best. The Chargers need to generate more turnovers and get more sacks to help Fantasy owners. Plan on drafting the Chargers DST with a late-round pick this season.
News: The Chargers have signed cornerback Nathan Vasher to a two-year contract. Vasher played the past six seasons with the Chicago Bears, including three under Ron Rivera, now the Chargers' defensive coordinator. He played in 15 games last season, with 15 tackles and one interception.
Analysis: The Chargers aim to use Vasher as a nickelback, which is a safe spot for him in their lineup. He'll fill the hole left by Antonio Cromartie. The DST is still good enough to use as a low-end No. 1 option, making them worthy of a late-round pick.
News: The Chargers defense is going to look different in 2010 after the team released DT Jamal Williams and traded away CB Antonio Cromartie to the Jets. The team got an undisclosed 2011 draft pick for Cromartie. They did give a high tender to LB Shawne Merriman, however, and also re-signed DLs Antonio Garay and Alfonso Boone.
Analysis: These losses might hurt on paper, but Cromartie was a detriment at times in 2009 and Williams missed all of last season and the Chargers still made the playoffs. They're still a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST headed into 2010, especially since it looks like RB/KR Darren Sproles will stay with the team.
News: The Chargers gave up 14 points to the Redskins in the 2nd quarter on two touchdown passes by Jason Campbell but gave up just six points the rest of the way to win 23-20 in the Week 17 season finale. The Chargers DST limited Washington to 339 yards of offense in the game but did not force a single turnover as mostly backups played for much of the game. The Chargers could sack Campbell just once in the game.
Analysis: The Chargers DST did little except win the game in Week 17 as the team's backups played for most of the night. The Chargers DST was a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit virtually all season and that is how they should enter 2010.
News: The Chargers DST had two interceptions and a fumble recovery Friday night at Tennessee in a 42-17 victory against the Titans. They also added one sack. Darren Sproles had four kickoff returns for 85 yards and one punt return for 6 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST continues to play as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option. Keep them active in Week 17 against Washington.
News: The Chargers allowed 24 points in Week 15 against Cincinnati. They allowed 407 yards of total offense and forced one turnover in the game. They recorded two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has underperformed this season, but it still has the elements of a top defensive unit and can still be a good start based upon matchups. They'll face a tough Titans team in Week 16 on the road.
News: The Chargers allowed a late touchdown to Patrick Crayton with two seconds left in the game, but it ended up being a meaningless score as San Diego beat Dallas, 20-17, in Week 14. San Diego held Dallas to three points in the first half, but the Cowboys tied the game at 10 on a 6-yard touchdown reception by Miles Austin in the third quarter. San Diego then kept Dallas off the scoreboard until the late touchdown. Dallas totaled 347 yards, including 108 on the ground. San Diego forced no turnovers and had only one sack.
Analysis: Had the Chargers not given up seven points and 86 yards on the final drive, the end stat line for the defense would have looked better. Unfortunately, Fantasy owners did lose some points and San Diego couldn't counter with a defensive score, sack or turnover. The Chargers continue to deliver erratic performances on defense and that makes the Chargers DST more of a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option. The Chargers play the Bengals in Week 15, so you might consider starting the Chargers DST.
News: The Chargers didn't have a shutdown defensive performance against the Browns in Week 13, allowing 23 points on 372 yards. They recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Chargers DST had performed like a top Fantasy unit in recent weeks, but injuries have hit it hard lately. It might have a hard time going forward and might even be a No. 2 Fantasy option with a tough matchup Week 14 at Dallas.
News: The Chargers likely will be missing some key defensive players when they visit the Browns on Sunday. LB Shawne Merriman, DL Luis Castillo and DB Eric Weddle aren't expected to play after missing Thursday's practice. Merriman has been bothered by a foot injury and hasn't practiced all week. It's a soft tissue ailment that has proved problematic. He would be replaced by rookie Larry English. Castillo hasn't played or practiced since hurting his ankle in the win over Denver on Nov. 22. Alfonso Boone is filling in for Castillo in the starting lineup. Weddle is expected to miss the next two games with a knee injury. In his absence, Paul Oliver and Steve Gregory will be part of the mix, depending on the package the Chargers are employing.
Analysis: The Chargers DST had regained its place as a top Fantasy unit in recent weeks, and it might still fare well with a good matchup against the Browns this weekend. If these injuries linger, though, the Chargers could have some serious problems on defense. Merriman isn't quite the shutdown player he used to be, but he's still good for a few sacks, and Weddle is a good enough tackler to serve as a No. 2 DB in Fantasy IDP leagues. Castillo doesn't offer much statistically, but he's an important part of the line. Obviously, you'll want to reserve these players in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: The Chargers defense put together a solid performance on Sunday, beating the Chiefs 43-14. Paul Oliver returned a fumble 40 yards the other way in the second quarter for a score. Quentin Jammer intercepted a pass and the Chargers recovered a total of three fumbles on defense. The Chiefs were limited to 181 yards through the air on 20 for 33 passing and a touchdown. On the ground, the Chiefs were limited to 114 yards on 23 carries.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has been one of the better units of late, limiting the Broncos to only three points Week 11. That trend should continue in Week 13 as the Chargers have a tasty matchup with the lowly Browns on the road. The Chargers DST remains a must-start Fantasy option for that contest.
News: The Chargers had a dominant defensive performance Week 11 at Denver, limiting the Broncos to three points on 271 yards. They recorded three sacks and one interception and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has really come around in recent weeks, averaging 3.8 sacks and allowing an average of 284 yards over its last five games. It's once again the kind of unit you can trust regardless of matchups. Fortunately, it has a good matchup Week 12 against the Chiefs, making it a must-start Fantasy option.
News: The San Diego Chargers have placed linebacker Jyles Tucker on the injured reserve list, meaning he's finished for the season. Tucker suffered an ankle injury in a win at the New York Giants two weeks ago. He appeared in seven games as a reserve and was inactive for two others.
Analysis: Tucker was given a five-year contract before the 2008 season despite having played in only six career regular-season games. He had only four tackles this season as he fell into a backup role with the return of Shawne Merriman. He had limited Fantasy appeal before the injury and his loss hardly effects the Chargers DST.
News: The Chargers secondary got torched on Sunday in a Week 10 31-23 win over the Eagles. Donovan McNabb threw for 450 total yards in the game and two touchdowns, getting intercepted by Antonio Cromartie on a last gasp Hail Mary attempt. However, the Eagles were stymied on the ground, allowing merely 29 yards on 13 attempts. The defense was able to sack QB Donovan McNabb twice in the contest.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has certainly come up empty at times this season and Week 10 was a good example as McNabb picked apart the teams secondary. In Week 11, the Chargers take on the Broncos on the road. Back in Week 6, the Broncos scored 34 points against the Chargers. Think of the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy unit for that contest.
News: Despite allowing 13 fourth-quarter points, the Chargers were able to eek out a 21-20 win over the Giants in Week 9 thanks to an 80-yard drive from the offense that was capped by a 18-yard touchdown by Vincent Jackson with 21 seconds left. The Giants managed 304 yards in the game, including 215 passing yards from Eli Manning. The Chargers had no interceptions, but one fumble recovery and five sacks.
Analysis: The Chargers haven't always put forth a great effort on defense in 2009, but they come up with a few games on occasion, like in Week 9. The good news for San Diego is that Shawne Merriman is finally starting to play like his former self after he missed most of the 2008 season with a knee injury. Consider the Chargers DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 10 against Philadelphia.
News: Following the lead of just about every team before them, the Chargers had a dominant defensive performance against the Raiders in Week 8, allowing 16 points on just 180 yards. They recorded five sacks and one interception.
Analysis: Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips each recorded two sacks Sunday. If the Chargers DST has them operating on full cylinders again, it could turn some heads in Fantasy. The Chargers have a fairly tough matchup Week 9 at the Giants, but the Chargers DST is still worth using as a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Chargers allowed just seven points and 203 yards of offense in Week 7 against the Chiefs in Kansas City. They intercepted three passes and recorded four sacks in the game. They also scored a touchdown on a blocked punt that was recovered for a score.
Analysis: That was a strong performance by the Chargers on the road in Week 7. They held the Chiefs to under 100 yards passing and had Matt Cassel out of rhythm the entire game. The Chargers defensive unit continues to be a strong start in Fantasy for their ability to get after the quarterback and create turnovers. They'll play a very weak offense in Week 8 against Oakland.
News: San Diego lost a home game to Denver on Monday night by the final score of 34-23. The Chargers DST had trouble stopping the Denver passing game and allowed the Broncos to rack up 328 yards of total offense. The Chargers managed just one sack of Kyle Orton and was not able to force a single turnover. The lone bright spot for the DST was return man Darren Sproles. Sproles brought a punt back to the house for a 77-yard TD in the 2nd quarter just before the half.
Analysis: Sproles is an electric part of the return game for the Chargers and makes this an exciting DST to own. That said, the Chargers didn't force any turnovers and managed just one measly sack. While the Chargers have now scored a DST touchdown in two straight games, they are not expected to be a solid unit this season and that was evidenced by the rest of their Week 6 game. They can be a solid bye-week replacement Week 7, however, as they travel to Kansas City to face the lowly Chiefs.
News: The Chargers have re-signed veteran defensive tackle Ian Scott, releasing safety Clinton Hart to make room for him. Scott was the backup to nose tackle Jamal Williams, who suffered a season-ending elbow injury. The Bolts cut Scott before the season.
Analysis: The Chargers are in dire need of help against the run as teams have been steamrolling them. Hopefully Scott can make a difference. The Bolts host the Broncos in Week 6 and are not a recommended Fantasy option since Denver has done a good job protecting QB Kyle Orton, who has only one turnover through five games and it came on a Hail Mary pass attempt. Consider other options for Week 6.
News: The Chargers defense might be awful this season, but they pitched in some stats and got some help on special teams to keep it close late at Pittsburgh in Week 4. On top of a fumble-return for a touchdown by FB Jacob Hester on a kickoff in the fourth quarter, the unit totaled three sacks and three forced fumbles (two recovered). However, they allowed the Steelers to throw for over 300 yards with three touchdowns and run for over 150 yards with two more scores there.
Analysis: The Chargers DST won't help many Fantasy owners this season as a game like this will be the exception and not the norm. There's some flair here because they have Darren Sproles returning kicks and Shawne Merriman as a pass rusher, but they'll hardly limit their opponents' yardage or scoring production. The Chargers DST is on bye in Week 5 before playing the Broncos at home in Week 6.
News: After a rough opening drive, the Chargers defense made the right changes in Week 3 against the Dolphins and were instrumental in a 23-13 win. The Dolphins ran the wildcat seven times for 42 yards, including three times on their impressive first drive - which nonetheless resulted in no points. Miami moved 94 yards in 17 plays and consumed 9:29 on that drive. On second-and-goal from the 1, Ronnie Brown never got a handle on the handoff from Chad Pennington and fumbled the ball into the end zone. Guard Justin Smiley came up with it, but he was touching the end line and it was ruled a touchback. The Chargers eventually knocked Pennington (shoulder) out of the game in the second half and devoured Chad Henne. San Diego capped the win with a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown by Eric Weddle in the fourth quarter and would have held Miami out of the end zone had Ricky Williams not scored on a 14-yard run with 2:51 left.
Analysis: The Chargers held Miami to 289 yards and had one sack. They did lose LB Shawne Merriman in the third quarter to a nagging groin injury, but San Diego still finished the game on a high note. We have been waiting for the Chargers defense to have a good game after so-so efforts in the first two weeks. The potential is there for the Chargers DST to be a very good Fantasy option, but remain a low-end No. 1 option heading into Week 4 against the Steelers.
News: While the Chargers defense held the Ravens to just 10 points in the second half Week 2, it was the first half that doomed San Diego in a 31-26 loss. The Ravens used two rushing touchdowns from Willis McGahee and a 27-yard receiving touchdown from Kelley Washington to take a 21-16 lead into the half. Baltimore finished with 311 total yards, including 130 on the ground. The Chargers defense managed just one sack and one interception.
Analysis: Even with the return of Shawne Merriman from a knee injury, the Chargers defense has looked as bad as they did in 2008. They are allowing teams to march up-and-down the field. We know there is potential for the Chargers to be a really good defense, but we just aren't seeing that right now. The Chargers DST remains a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 3 against the Dolphins.
News: The San Diego Chargers placed defensive tackle Jamal Williams on Reserve-Injured with a tricep injury. Williams will miss the remainder of the 09 season. To fill Williams place on the active roster, the team signed defensive end Andre Coleman from its practice squad.
Analysis: Williams is a space eater for the Chargers who doesn't put up a ton of stats. Fantasy owners will not miss him in IDP leagues but those who own the Chargers DST could be hurting now. San Diego will have lots of trouble stopping the run without Williams plugging up the middle. San Diego's DST is likely still a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 2 against a weak offensive opponent in the Ravens but their value takes a hit.
News: The Chagers defense allowed the Raiders to move up and down the field more than expected Week 1 against the Raiders, but were able to cause three turnovers in a 24-20 win. Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason each picked off a JaMarcus Russell pass. Stephen Cooper led the defense with 13 tackles and also forced and recovered a Darren McFadden fumble. The Raiders carried the ball 32 times against them for a total of 148 yards and a TD. Russell and Bruce Gradkowski, who came on for Russell in the fourth quarter and threw two passes, combined for 225 yards passing and a touchdown.
Analysis: Cooper was a breakout success for the Chargers Week 1 but the defense as a whole isn't likely too thrilled with its performance against a less than potent Raiders offense. The Chargers defense didn't suffer any significant injuries in the game and should remain a No. 1 Fantasy option against another subpar offense Week 2 in the Ravens.
News: District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has dismissed reality TV star Tila Tequila's accusations that San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman choked her and threw her to the ground early Sunday. Dumanis announced Friday afternoon there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Merriman committed a crime. Tequila had signed a citizen's arrest warrant charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, both felonies. "This case is now closed," Dumanis said in a statement.
Analysis: Merriman has said all along he believed the truth would prevail and he was finally vindicated Friday. He can now move forward and focus on helping San Diego get to the playoffs. His return from a knee injury is a big boost for the Chargers defense, which suffered without him in 2008. Consider the Chargers DST a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 1 against the Raiders. Merriman remains a high-end Fantasy LB.
News:Shawne Merriman didn't participate in either practice Tuesday - the last day of camp with two practices - but said there's nothing to be alarmed about. He spent part of the afternoon working out in the pool and expected to be back for Wednesday afternoon's practice. Merriman said there are certain things he's able to do better than before the surgery, but other aspects of his game aren't there yet. He said he'd rather not think about what percentage he's at. He said he'll know he's all the way back when everything is second nature. "I'm still progressing," he said. "When I'll be 100 percent is when I feel like I'll be able to go out there and do everything without thinking about it. Thing is, I'll go out there and do it, but I'm still thinking about it. That's the thing. It's not whether I can do it or not. I can do it. You have to self-consciously think about things when you're not 100 percent."
Analysis: Coach Norv Turner said he's satisfied with Merriman's progress. "If there's such a thing as being on schedule, he's on schedule," Turner said. "I always go by talking to him and looking in his eye and all that, and he's excited where he's at. The Chargers really missed Merriman's presence in 2008 and lost some close games due to defensive gaffes. If Merriman can get back to his pass-rushing ways, the Chargers will be that much better in 2009. The Chargers DST pass as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option Draft Day.
News: San Diego outside linebacker Shawne Merriman played for the first time since having knee surgery following last year's regular-season opener in Saturday's preseason game against Seattle. Merriman said he felt OK. "They ran the damn ball away from me the whole time, so that was not too good," Merriman said. "I played OK, though."
Analysis: The Chargers really missed Merriman's presence in 2008 and lost some close games due to defensive gaffes. If Merriman can get back to his pass-rushing ways, the Chargers will be that much better in 2009. The Chargers DST pass as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option Draft Day. Merriman is clearly an injury-risk sleeper in IDP leagues.
News: Chargers coaches said return man Darren Sproles could benefit from the new rule outlawing kickoff blocking wedges involving three or more players. Sproles ranked eighth in kickoff returns last year. "When you get spread out a little more, there are probably some seams that show up," Chargers special teams coach Steve Crosby said. "He's certainly a guy that will split a seam if he finds it, and he will."
Analysis: Sproles will continue to make the Chargers DST and ST unit a little better if he continues to make plays like he's capable of. Fantasy owners want Sproles to be more of a factor on offense, but he comes into the season as a quality No. 3 RB as LaDainian Tomlinson's backup.
News:Shawne Merriman was back at work at Chargers Park on Monday with an eye on the future. The imposing linebacker, who missed all but one game last season because of an injury to his left knee, wants to be able to make a contribution this year. "I just want to help the team get back what we lacked last year -- nastiness and intensity and being physical," Merriman said. "I think that's where you notice it, being away from the game. Some of the things that I was really good at doing, that is motivating everybody else, getting everybody else to take their game to another level." Merriman reported to training camp Monday along with the quarterbacks, rookies and other players coming off injuries. The balance of the squad checks in Thursday, with a full-team workout on Friday. The medical staff kept Merriman from team drills. "I think that will come later on, don't know the timeline for that," Merriman said. "But hopefully I'm not out much longer."
Analysis: The Chargers are hoping Merriman's knack for pestering quarterbacks -- he had 39 1/2 sacks in his first three seasons -- will spill over to the secondary. If Merriman can wreck his usual havoc in opposing backfields, that could mean more interception opportunities for cornerbacks Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie. They combined for just four last year. "I'm looking to see those guys' numbers to go back up and us being one of the best defenses in the NFL," Merriman said. "And it's going to take a lot of work and for me, my work starts today." Coach Norv Turner said Merriman has been moving great. "His workouts have been outstanding," Turner said. "His strength is good. He's ready to get going." But Turner said the team will be prudent in handling Merriman. "We're going to monitor where Shawne is and if he needs some rest, we'll give it to him," he said. "We have time, and we'll be smart about how we get him ready." Turner hinted Merriman will likely see action in the preseason. Merriman is clearly an injury-risk sleeper in IDP leagues.
News: The Chargers defense, coming off an impressive performance against the Colts, gave up 35 points to the Steelers on 290 yards in Sunday's Divisional Playoff game at Pittsburgh. It recorded one sack.
Analysis: Without Shawne Merriman, the Chargers DST had an inconsistent season. Its style of play makes it a favorable choice for sacks, though, and it should rebound nicely next season. Expect it to emerge once again as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Chargers DST gave up only 17 points in a 23-17 overtime win against the Colts in their Wild Card playoff game. They allowed Peyton Manning to throw for 310 yards, but Joseph Addai was limited to less than 50 yards on the ground.
Analysis: Without Shawne Merriman this seaosn, the Chargers DST had an inconsistent season. Looking ahead to the next round of the playoffs, the Chargers are probably one of the worst defenses left in playoff IDP leagues.
News: The Chargers DST had no sacks or fumble recoveries Sunday against Denver but did get two interceptions. Paul Oliver had one and Luis Castillo had the other. Darren Sproles had two punt returns for 16 yards and four kickoff returns for 96 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST was inconsistent for most of the 2008 regular season, especially without star pass rusher Shawne Merriman. Keep an eye on how the Chargers do against Indianapolis in the first round of the playoffs but consider them a low-end No. 1 option going into 2009.
News: The Chargers DST had a defensive touchdown Sunday at Tampa Bay when Antoine Cason returned an interception for a score. The Chargers had two interceptions, two sacks and recovered a fumble. Stephen Cooper had the other interception, Clinton Hart recovered the fumble and Shaun Phillips and Jyles Tucker had the sacks. Darren Sproles also added four kickoff returns for 127.2 yards and two punt returns for 45 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has been a disappointment this season but is capable of outings like this. Consider the Chargers a No. 2 Fantasy option in Week 17 against Denver.
News: In the Chargers' 22-21 win at the Chiefs in Week 15, the DST totaled one interception and one forced fumble. That's it -- no sacks or anything else.
Analysis: The Chargers DST had a good outing against the Raiders in Week 14, but there's a reason for it -- they're the Raiders. Kansas City's offense was good, and the Buccaneers offense should also move the ball in Week 16. That makes the Bolts DST no better than a No. 2 option next week.
News: San Diego didn't have to break much of a sweat at home against the Oakland Raiders in Week 14 on Thursday night. The Chargers defense did not allow a single touchdown in the 34-7 victory. The Chargers DST, however, allowed Justin Miller to return a kickoff 92 yards for the Raiders' lone score just before halftime, but that was all the damage done. San Diego forced four turnovers and limited Oakland to just 163 total yards. Stephen Cooper picked QB JaMarcus Russell off twice before he left with a twisted ankle before the half. Shaun Phillips picked up 2.5 sacks for the Chargers as they got to the two Raiders QBs a total of three times.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has disappointed much of this year, thanks largely to the loss of Shawne Merriman for the season. This was definitely an aberration, but one that may continue in Week 15 since they play at Kansas City. You might want to go ahead and take another flier on them next week and ride the hot hand.
News: Against the Falcons in Week 13, the Chargers defense gave up 22 points on 348 yards, going without a sack or an interception for the first time in four games.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has disappointed much of this year, thanks largely to the loss of Shawne Merriman for the season. They have a nice matchup, though, Week 14 against the Raiders, so continue taking a flier on them.
News: The Chargers DST had one interception and one sack Sunday against the Colts. Jamal Williams had the sack, and Quentin Jammer had the interception. Darren Sproles had one punt return for 4 yards and five kickoff returns for 101 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST is a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option and can be used if needed in Week 13 against Atlanta.
News: The Chargers gave up just 11 points in Week 11 at Pittsburgh, but they gave up 410 yards of offense. They did force a turnover, but did sack the quarterback four times.
Analysis: The Chargers did not allow a touchdown in the game, but the 400 yards hurt in most Fantasy formats that penalize yardage. The Chargers defense is not as valuable in Fantasy as it has been in past seasons and they will face a tough matchup in Week 12 when they face a tough Colts offense. Consider them a low-end option for that matchup.
News: The Chargers allowed 19 points and 339 yards of total offense in Week 10 against Atlanta. They did not force a turnover in the game and recorded just one sack.
Analysis: Defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was fired by the San Diego Chargers and replaced with linebackers coach Ron Rivera during the week. This was not a strong first showing, but it could take a couple of weeks before we see Rivera put any kind of a stamp on the defense. The Chargers defense is a unit in flux and for that reason they should only be used in larger leagues for Week 11 at Pittsburgh until they get going.
News: Defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell has been fired by the San Diego Chargers and replaced with inside linebackers coach Ron Rivera. Cottrell's dismissal comes two days after the Chargers lost to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, 37-32 in London. Brees threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers have the worst pass defense in the NFL. The Chargers have lost three of four after entering the season as a Super Bowl favorite.
Analysis: Rivera was previously the defensive coordinator of the Bears, who went to Super Bowl XLI under his tutelage. While the scheme will remain the same, look for the linebackers to be blitzed more and the secondary to play at a more physical level. For now, expect the Chargers DST to remain a middle-end option that is lucky enough to face the Chiefs two more times before the end of the season.
News: The Chargers allowed 37 points on 409 yards against the Saints in England in Week 8, going without a sack or an interception. They did, however, record a safety when Saints QB Drew Brees retreated and intentionally threw the ball out of the end zone to consume time. Their defense has now gone two games without a sack or an interception.
Analysis: The Chargers DST just isn't the same without Shawne Merriman even though it has a few other playmakers. It looks like the kind of unit you want to start only when it has a favorable matchup, which it does in Week 10 against the Chiefs. It has a bye Week 9, so keep it reserved.
News: The Chargers DST didn't come up with much help for Fantasy owners in Week 7 at Buffalo. They didn't get a sack, an interception or a fumble while allowing the Bills to score 23 points.
Analysis: Now the Bolts are off to jolly ol' England for an International matchup against the Saints. With New Orleans' offense always potentially dangerous, the Chargers DST shouldn't be counted on for much help in Week 7. Consider other options before settling on them.
News: The Chargers limited the visiting Patriots to 10 points on 299 yards in Week 6. They recorded four sacks and one interception.
Analysis: The Chargers DST has disappointed in Fantasy thanks to the loss of Shawne Merriman, so you have to credit the matchup more than anything else for their success in Week 6. The Chargers visit the Bills in Week 7, so think of the Chargers DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Chargers DST gave up 17 points and 390 yards to the Dolphins in a Week 5 loss. They made only one sack and recovered a fumble on a kick return.
Analysis: The Chargers were picked apart by Ronnie Brown and Chad Pennington on Sunday as Miami continued to impress after losing their first two games. San Diego will host New England in Week 6 and will likely remain a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST option.
News: The Chargers defense was a bit sluggish out of the gate Week 4 against the Raiders as Oakland bolted out to a 15-0 halftime lead. However, San Diego stood tall in the second half and held Oakland to three points as the offense rallied for a 28-18 win. The Raiders totaled 323 yards, including 251 through the air. The Chargers defense had six sacks of QB JaMarcus Russell, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: If the Chargers could not beat the Raiders, there might not be any hope for their defense in 2008. They do miss LB Shawne Merriman, who is out of the season with a knee injury. Still, the Chargers DST has enough talent to be considered a viable start Week 5 against the Dolphins.
News: After losing two close games in the first two weeks of the season, the Chargers made sure to leave no doubts Week 3 against the Jets. San Diego routed New York 48-29 and got some help from their defense. San Diego allowed just two first-half touchdowns before New York scored two more late in the fourth quarter. Chargers DB Antonio Cromartie had a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown while the Jets barely got over 300 yards (308). San Diego had three interceptions, two from Cromartie, one fumble recovery and three sacks.
Analysis: The Chargers have yet to hold an opponent under 20 points in three games this season and are desperately missing LB Shawne Merriman, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Chargers DST doesn't appear to be a very good Fantasy option at this time, but consider using them Week 4 against a so-so Oakland team.
News: Showing ultimate confidence in his offense, Mike Shanahan went for the 2-point conversion with 29 seconds left and Jay Cutler hit rookie Eddie Royal over the middle to give the Denver Broncos a 39-38 win over the stunned San Diego Chargers on Sunday. The Chargers (0-2) couldn't believe they lost in the final seconds for the second straight week. Trailing 38-31, the Broncos (2-0) reached the 1 but on third-and-goal, Cutler reared back to throw and the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into linebacker Tim Dobbins' hands. But referee Ed Hochuli blew his whistle, apparently ruling it an incomplete pass. After a review, Hochuli said that the Broncos would keep the ball because his whistle had blown the play dead. The Broncos got the ball at the 10-yard line, where it had hit the grass out of Cutler's hands. Two plays later, Cutler hit Royal for the TD to make it 38-37. Instead of going for the tie, however, Shanahan kept his offense on the field and with 75,000-plus fans at Invesco Field holding their breath, Cutler again found Royal in the end zone for the winner on the exact same route.
Analysis: San Diego allowed Denver to post 486 yards of offense and gave up 18 receptions to Brandon Marshall. They got no sacks of QB Jay Cutler and picked off just one pass. San Diego has allowed 65 points in their first two games and are really a different team with Shawn Merriman, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Chargers DST is looking like a risky option heading into Week 3 against the Jets.
News: San Diego Chargers LB Shawne Merriman informed the team Tuesday that he has decided to have surgery on his knee and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season, reports the team's official website. "Shawne informed me he did not feel right (on the field) and thought it best to shut it down," said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith. "The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery." The Chargers are expected to place Merriman on "Reserve-Injured" later this week.
Analysis: This is a major blow to Fantasy IDP owners who were counting on Merriman, obviously. He's one of the game's best linebackers and was considered a No. 2 Fantasy option at the position. You'll have to find production elsewhere as he won't see the field again in 2008. He should be fine for next year, but this season it was one game and done. This also obviously hurts the Chargers DST, which was considered a low-end No. 1 unit heading into Week 2's game at Denver. The Broncos will be able to take advantage of the missing Merriman and this probably drops San Diego down to a high-end No. 2 DST.
News:Jake Delhomme came back from an elbow injury with the kind of impact the San Diego Chargers won't soon forget, throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Dante Rosario as time expired to lift the underdog Panthers to a shocking 26-24 win Sunday. The Chargers had lost only one of their previous 16 regular-season home games. "We watched film on them and know what they would do but they also did a lot of things that we didn't expect," said Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, who's playing with two torn ligaments in his left knee. The Chargers allowed 388 yards, including 246 through the air. They had no interceptions, one fumble recovery and one sack (Igor Olshansky).
Analysis: It was a real boost for the Chargers defense to have Merriman on the field, but it didn't help much as the Chargers were shredded by the Panthers. San Diego is usually a stout defense and will look for better results Week 2 against the Broncos. They still remain a Fantasy viable DST.
News: Chargers LB Shawne Merriman said his left knee "felt good" after practicing for the first time since Aug. 7, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune on Tuesday. Merriman, who wore a big brace on the knee, is expected to play Sunday.
Analysis: When healthy, Merriman is a nice No. 2 Fantasy LB capable of double-digit sacks (but not triple-digit tackles). However, the fact he's playing on a shredded knee drops his value down slightly, so don't reach too far for him in IDP league drafts. For Week 1, consider Merriman a starter as long as he plans on playing against the Panthers.
News: San Diego LB Shawne Merriman has a torn lateral collateral ligament as well as posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee he said Saturday, reports The San Diego Union Tribune. The lateral collateral ligament is the further knee trauma Merriman alluded to earlier this week when he initially spoke about the torn posterior cruciate ligament. He's seen specialists in N.Y. and Alabama and plans to fly to Miami to see another shortly before deciding whether to being playing when the regular season starts or to have surgery. "I'm just trying to get an opinion on what I need to do, how bad the injury is and if I can do anything to play," Merriman said. "I'm going to do the best I can to get back on the field and get ready for Carolina."
Analysis: The Chargers have always felt that Merriman could play when the season begins and coach Norv Turner remains optimistic. Still, this doesn't look good and the young outstanding linebacker doesn't want to possibly cause further damage and shorten his playing career because he played on this injury. When healthy, he's a nice No. 2 Fantasy LB capable of double-digit sacks (but not triple-digit tackles). There is a chance he could miss the entire '08 campaign. We'll keep you posted on Merriman's status. The Chargers DST could also lose its status as a top Fantasy unit if Merriman is out for a long time.
News: Chargers coach Norv Turner is more concerned with having linebacker Shawne Merriman on the field for the playoffs than next month's regular-season opener. Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowler, felt pain in his knee after playing in San Diego's preseason game on Aug. 9. On Thursday, Merriman said he has a torn posterior cruciate ligament in the knee. He has visited noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews and may see two other doctors to weigh his options. If the ligament is severely torn, he'll undergo season-ending knee surgery. If the tear isn't significant, Merriman could play through the pain and be ready for Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 7. "If a guy has a setback and it keeps him out of it for a week or two ... I don't know that anyone will remember that any player missed a week of practice or was dealing with an issue," Turner said Friday after practice.
Analysis: San Diego would turn to Jyles Tucker if Merriman can't play, but Turner called that idea "way, way, way, way premature." "We are going to do everything we can to create a situation where (Merriman) is not in pain and the leg gets some strength back," Turner said. Merriman, who had offseason arthroscopic surgery on the same knee, was unavailable for comment Friday. Chargers general manager A. J. Smith did not immediately return a phone call. Merriman is likely out for the preseason and a huge question mark for the start of the regular season.
News: Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, who has missed more than a week of practice because of a sore left knee, said Thursday night that he has ligament damage and is evaluating his options. The trouble is "a loose ligament and (I'm) waiting to get more info on what I need to do," Merriman said in an e-mail to the North County Times. Merriman underwent surgery to repair cartilage damage five months ago but has had persistent pain in the knee during training camp. He traveled this week to Birmingham, Ala., so the knee could be examined by Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation. Merriman last played in the Aug. 9 preseason opener against Dallas and has not practiced since then. Coach Norv Turner said he hoped that Merriman will be able to play on Sept. 7 when the Chargers open their regular season against the Panthers.
Analysis: The Chargers DST had a tremendous season in 2007, scoring eight touchdowns with 36 interceptions, 47 sacks, 20 fumble recoveries and 21 forced fumbles. Without Merriman, you can expect the sacks and forced fumbles to take a dip. We'll keep you posted on the latest with the star outside linebacker, but if he misses part or all of the season, the Chargers DST will be headed for the middle of the No. 1 DST pack.
News: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers LB Shawne Merriman is wearing a brace on his left knee mostly out of caution. "Right now there is a lot of competition going on," said Merriman, who had his meniscus repaired in March. "I don't want anything crazy happening." Merriman said the knee is totally healed, but he held out the possibility he could continue wearing the brace in September.
Analysis: Merriman is a solid player in IDP leagues and a No. 1 option at LB. He is a good source of sacks and tackles. Hopefully his knee is 100 percent and won't cause him a setback during the season. He is a key member of the Chargers DST, and without Merriman, the unit would suffer.
News: Chargers inside linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended for four games by the NFL on Tuesday for testing positive for a banned stimulant. Cooper, who moved into the starting lineup last season and led the Chargers with 108 total tackles, said in a statement released by the team that he took a stimulant that was recently added to the NFL's list of prohibited substances. While in college, Cooper admitted to possession of steroids after being found with about 1,000 pills in his duffel bag when the driver of an SUV he was riding in was stopped for speeding in 2002. Cooper, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge, said at the time that he never took the steroids, but had been planning to use them to bulk up in hopes of making the NFL. "Obviously we're disappointed, just as I know Stephen is," coach Norv Turner said in a statement. "Coop made a mistake and now must deal with the consequences. It's unfortunate, but we'll deal with it and move on."
Analysis: Cooper is a solid run stuffer who will be missed for the club's first four games. However, the addition earlier this offseason of Derek Smith should help ease the loss. The Chargers DST had a tremendous season in 2007, scoring eight touchdowns with 36 interceptions, 47 sacks, 20 fumble recoveries and 21 forced fumbles. The Chargers are in good shape for 2008 and should be considered the No. 1 option in all leagues this summer despite Cooper's suspension.
News: Derek Smith, released Tuesday by the San Francisco 49ers, agreed to a two-year deal with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Smith, whose role with the 49ers was assumed last season by rookie Patrick Willis, will bolster San Diego's inside linebackers group. Smith was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1997 and played four seasons under Norv Turner, who is entering his second season as San Diego's head coach.
Analysis: The Chargers DST had a tremendous season in 2007, scoring eight touchdowns with 36 interceptions, 47 sacks, 20 fumble recoveries and 21 forced fumbles. Smith will definitely help against the run and be just another piece in what should be a tremendous defense in 2008. The Chargers are in good shape for 2008 and should be considered the No. 1 option in all leagues this summer.
News: The Chargers DST had a tremendous season in 2007. They scored eight defensive touchdowns with 36 interceptions, 47 sacks, 20 fumble recoveries and 21 forced fumbles. Antonio Cromartie led the way with 10 interceptions, and he got help from Shawne Merriman with 12.5 sacks. On special teams, Darren Sproles had two touchdowns on returns, one each on a punt and kickoff. Sproles averaged 27.2 yards on kickoff returns and 9.5 yards on punt returns.
Analysis: The Chargers are in good shape for 2008 and should be considered a No. 1 option in all leagues. The same goes for the ST unit with Sproles ability to score every time he touches the ball.
News: The Chargers DST allowed 446 yards to the Colts on Sunday, but picked off Peyton Manning twice, including one for a touchdown that was called back for holding, as San Diego upset Indianapolis in an AFC Divisional Playoff game. They also forced a Marvin Harrison fumble, but did not record a sack.
Analysis: The Chargers DST may have been a popular pick in postseason leagues, after their success against Manning in the regular season (three interceptions). Things will get very difficult in the AFC Championship game, however, as they will face the offensive juggernaut that is the Patriots.
News: The Chargers limited the visiting Titans to six points on 248 yards in their playoff game Sunday. They forced an interception and a fumble, also recording three sacks. Their special teams, meanwhile, had 52 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST got off to a poor start in 2007, but it emerged as one of Fantasy's best units by the end and continued the trend into the playoffs. Unfortunately, it has a tough matchup in the next round at Indianapolis.
News: The Chargers DST allowed 316 yards to the Raiders in a 30-17 win in Week 17, but recovered two fumbles, made an interception and sacked JaMarcus Russell four times. They also managed to score a touchdown when they recovered a Russell fumble in the end zone. The Chargers will host a Wild Card playoff game on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Analysis: The Chargers DST lived up to its billing this season after getting off to a very poor start to 2007. They put up big points in seven of their last nine games and scored defensive touchdowns in two of their final three. They could be a nice sleeper choice for many in Playoff Fantasy leagues as they are on such a roll.
News: The Chargers DST held the Broncos to three points Monday night and had four sacks, two interceptions and recovered a fumble. Darren Sproles also had two kickoff returns for 44 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST should be considered a No. 1 option for Week 17 at Oakland.
News: The Chargers DST combined for five interceptions with one returned for a touchdown and a fumble recovery while holding the Lions to 14 points and 26 rush yards in Week 16.
Analysis: The Chargers will have their hands full with the Broncos in Week 16, and they'll be better apt to exploit San Diego's Shawne Merriman-less defense. Figure the Chargers DST to be a No. 2 option.
News: Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman will miss the Chargers' home game against Detroit on Sunday because of a sprained ligament in his left knee. Coach Norv Turner said Monday the injury isn't season-ending. "I'm not going to speculate, but it could be a couple of weeks," Turner said a day after Merriman was hurt in the second quarter of San Diego's 23-17 overtime win at Tennessee.
Analysis: Merriman had two sacks Sunday to push his season total to 11 1/2 but said on local radio that the Titans had a "hit" out on him. This is a terrible blow to a Chargers DST that has only CB Antonio Cromartie as a premier playmaker without Merriman. Consider them a top-end No. 2 DST option vs. the Lions in Week 15, good for a couple of sacks and a turnover.
News: The Chargers DST registered two sacks and two interceptions at Tennessee in Week 14, holding the Titans to 119 pass yards but giving up 131 rush yards in the process. Moreover, the Bolts lost LB Shawne Merriman to a sprained knee and may be without him for a couple of games.
Analysis: We'll know more on Merriman's status as the week moves along. Ultimately, the Chargers DST should be good for a couple of sacks and interceptions of Jon Kitna in Week 15 when the Lions come to San Diego. Figure them to be a low-end No. 1 DST option.
News: The Chargers DST will travel to Tennessee to face the Titans and their fifth-ranked rushing game in Week 14.
Analysis: The Chargers DST ranks 20th in the NFL, including 22nd against the pass and 20th against the run. Keep them active against Vince Young and Co. for this matchup.
News: The Chargers DST had eight sacks and three interceptions Sunday at Kansas City. They also had three kickoff returns for 62 yards and three punt returns for 3 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST played great against the Chiefs and should be considered a No. 1 option in Week 14 at Tennessee.
News: The Chargers DST travels to Kansas City in Week 13 for what should be a good matchup for them in Fantasy play. The Chiefs rank 29th in total offense, including 20th in the passing game and 29th in the running game.
Analysis: The Chargers DST ranks 21st in total defense, including 23rd against the run and 21st against the pass. The Chargers lead the league in interceptions with 17. It's a great matchup for his DST unit, so activate them in all leagues.
News: The Chargers defense showed up in dominating fashion Week 12 against the Ravens. They limited Baltimore to 14 points on 210 total yards. They sacked QB Kyle Boller four times and forced two fumbles, recovering both. They did not get any interceptions.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has had its moments in 2007, but has also been exposed. That is why they rank in the lower half in total defense. Still, since you likely spent a high-end draft pick on the Chargers DST, they should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy unit Week 13 against the Chiefs and inexperienced starter Brodie Croyle.
News: The Chargers DST host the 23rd-ranked Ravens offense on Sunday in Week 12.
Analysis: The Chargers DST are a great start this week against the Ravens. This unit is ranked 12th in total defense. Start them in all formats.
News: The Chargers DST had no sacks, fumbles or interceptions Sunday against Jacksonville. Darren Sproles had two kickoff returns for 15 yards and three punt returns for 17.1 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST should be in line for a bounce back game in Week 12 against Baltimore. Consider them a No. 2 option against the Ravens.
News: The Chargers DST will travel to Jacksonville on Sunday in Week 11. The Jaguars offense is ranked 16th overall, but their ground game is third overall, averaging 142 rushing yards per game.
Analysis: The Chargers DST is ranked 27th in total defense (25th against the pass and 21st against the run), but they are coming off a huge win against the Colts. We recommend starting this DST against the Jaguars in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Chargers DST had a landmark day Week 10 against the Colts, picking up six interceptions off Peyton Manning -- three for Antonio Cromartie -- and two special teams touchdowns on returns by Darren Sproles -- both in the first quarter. The Chargers also had two sacks, allowing 21 points on 386 yards. Their special teams finished with 174 return yards, including 89 on a kick return and 45 on a punt return for Sproles.
Analysis: The Chargers defense may have entered this game ranked 25th in the league, but you have to love the big-play ability of its DST in Fantasy. That part of the equation makes it a viable Fantasy start in any given week, and it has a good matchup Week 11 at Jacksonville.
News: San Diego hosts Indianapolis in a difficult matchup for their defense/special team on Sunday. The Colts are ranked third in total offense with Peyton Manning at the helm.
Analysis: The Chargers DST should only be used in larger leagues for this matchup. They rank 25th in total defense.
News: The Chargers DST, ranked as our No. 1 DST unit heading into Week 9, gave up 528 yards and 35 points to the Vikings, while grabbing one interception and two fumble recoveries. The only bright spot came via Antonio Cromartie's 109-yard field goal return for a touchdown.
Analysis: Well, that was embarrassing. Adrian Peterson ran all over the Chargers and the QB combo of Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger didn't have a horrible day either as Minnesota torched San Diego for 35 points. The DST won't have it any easier in Week 10 when they host the Colts.
News: CBSSports.com ranks the Chargers DST as the No. 1 unit to play in Week 9 as they travel to face the Minnesota Vikings' 23rd-ranked offense.
Analysis: QB Tarvaris Jackson (finger) should get the start against San Diego, but the Chargers should pick up some sacks and turnovers. With the Bears off and the Colts and Patriots facing off against each other, this is the best matchup of the week defensively. Keep them active in all leagues.
News: The Chargers DST had a huge game Week 8 against the Texans, picking up two scores and four interceptions -- two off Matt Schaub and two off Sage Rosenfels. The first score came on an over-snapped punt -- one pounced on by Antonio Cromartie in the end zone. The second came on a Cromartie 70-yard interception return in the second quarter. The defense also picked up a sack, allowing 10 points on 367 yards. The Chargers special teams, meanwhile, picked up 72 yards.
Analysis: After a slow start, the Chargers DST has picked up its play in recent weeks, recording eight sacks and allowing only 27 points over its last four games. The Chargers have a terrific matchup Week 9 at Minnesota, so their DST should be active in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Chargers DST ranks 16th in total defense (25th against the pass and sixth against the run), but in the past three weeks, they have been even better, with seven sacks, and a league-low 17 points allowed (they did have a bye last week).
Analysis: The Chargers DST have an excellent matchup in Week 8, as they host the Houston Texans. We rank them among the best DSTs to start in all formats for this outing.
News: The Chargers DST is on a bye week in Week 7. They rank 14th in total defense, including 25th against the pass and eighth against the run.
Analysis: The Chargers will host Houston in Week 8. Their DST isn't what it once was, but they are still formidable against weak offensive teams. The losses of LB Donnie Edwards and LB Randall Godfrey have proven to be too much.
News: The San Diego Chargers DST allowed 14 points in Week 6 against the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers also yielded just 246 total net yards in the win while racking up six sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Shawne Merriman was good for 2.5 sacks, while Shaun Phillips racked up seven solo tackles, two assists and two sacks. He also had a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The Chargers DST remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues, especially with the struggling Houston Texans offense up next in Week 8. Unfortunately, you'll need to make other plans for Week 7 with the team on a bye.
News: San Diego hosts division rival Oakland in Week 6. The Raiders rank a surprising ninth so far in total offense, mostly due to their top-ranked rushing unit. They have allowed only 10 sacks this year after being the worst in that category a year ago.
Analysis: The Chargers DST ranks 22nd in the NFL in total defense, and they have 10 sacks, with only five interceptions. This unit has five sacks and three picks in their past three games, so consider them again this week.
News: The Chargers defense corralled Travis Henry and limited Jay Cutler in Week 5 at Denver, holding them to three points. The Bolts only had one sack, one interception and one forced fumble (two recoveries), but they also scored on a fumble return on special teams. The Chargers allowed 232 passing yards and 72 rushing yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST looked like the top-end unit we pegged them as earlier this season. And it gets better -- they host the Raiders in Week 6. Expect them to continue playing well next week. Start them if you own them.
News: The Chargers DST ranks just 25th in total defense this season. They have nine sacks, eight interceptions and they rank 27th and 12th against the pass and run respectively. They play at Denver in Week 5.
Analysis: Denver's offense ranks fifth in the NFL and they have allowed just five sacks, which ranks them among the top 10, so the Chargers DST is facing a tough matchup. If you have a better alternative, use it.
News: The Chargers rough start to the 2007 season carried into a Week 4 loss to the Chiefs. The defense had trouble stopping the Chiefs in the second half, and allowed 30 points to go along with 390 total yards before the dust settled. They did manage to pick off QB Damon Huard twice and and come away with two sacks.
Analysis: The Chargers have now allowed 30 or more points in two of four weeks this season. They seem to be missing former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who is now the head coach in Dallas. With every week, the Chargers DST is looking less and less as a No. 1 Fantasy option. Perhaps they can get on track Week 5 against the Broncos and second-year QB Jay Cutler. Unless you have a better option, use the Chargers DST Week 5.
News: The Chargers might be one of the league's better defenses, but the Chiefs have given them fits in three of their last four meetings in the regular season, racking up over 340 yards and at least 20 points in each game.
Analysis: The Chiefs offense doesn't look like it's going to put up 340 yards many times this season, especially if Larry Johnson continues to struggle as he has done so far in 2007. The Chargers are having no problem stopping the run this year, but are giving up some passing yards. That's probably just a reflection on the fact that teams can't run on them, however. Start San Diego's DST in Week 4 if you have them, and you should feel OK starting them almost every week in 2007.
News: The Chargers DST had no turnovers and only two sacks Sunday against Green Bay. Darren Sproles had three kick returns for a 25.3 average and one punt return for 3 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers DST will look to get back on track in Week 4 against Kansas City. Consider them a No. 1 option.
News: The San Diego Chargers DST was roughed up for 38 points and 407 total net yards in Week 2 at New England. The defense was able to record a pair of sacks and they had one interception in the loss.
Analysis: Things should return to normal for the San Diego DST when they face veteran QB Brett Favre and the Packers in Week 3. Despite the sorry performance against the Pats, the Chargers DST remains a must-start in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Patriots will struggle to run the ball against San Diego, which allowed Chicago just 80 yards rushing in Week 1, but Tom Brady should have success throwing the ball. The Patriots aerial attack had 297 yards passing and three touchdowns in Week 1 against the Jets.
Analysis: The Chargers are a No. 1 Fantasy DST, but they'll have their hands full with Tom Brady and Randy Moss on Sunday night. Most of you won't have a better option, but if you do, leave the Chargers on your bench.
News: The Chargers defense kept Chicago's offense down, holding them to three points and just over 200 total yards. They added three sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception.
Analysis: The Chargers DST was great here, but the Patriots will provide a tougher challenge next week. Expect them to give up more than three points; consider a DST with a better matchup if you can.
News:The Sports Xchange reports it'll be interesting to see Chargers defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell unleash his defense against a quarterback who can get rattled. Cottrell, who took over for Wade Phillips, was very vanilla in his defensive packages during the summer. In Week 1, he finally gets to turn loose Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips in a pass-rush/blitz situation. If the Bears' Rex Grossman doesn't get the protection or has trouble clicking on his hot reads, the Chargers defense could deliver some choice field position to an offense that can roll.
Analysis: Let's see what Cottrell, in his Chargers debut, has up his sleeve for a defense with a league-best 61 sacks last year. Despite the coaching change in San Diego, the personnel still there makes them worthy of being a top-five DST.
News: DL Igor Olshansky (groin), LB Matt Wilhelm (calf) and DL Jamal Williams (foot) all played in Thursday's preseason finale against the 49ers. Olshansky had an assist and quarterback hurry, while Wilhelm recorded two assists and a hurry. Williams started and did not record any defensive statistics.
Analysis: The Chargers haven't exactly been bringing it in the preseason like they will in the regular season. Despite the coaching change in San Diego, the personnel still there makes them worthy of being a top-five DST.
News: Quentin Jammer, who had a team-high four interceptions last year, isn't worried about the defense's back end, according to The Sports Xchange. It has looked mediocre during the preseason. "That's because everything we play in the preseason is vanilla defense, it's basic defense," Jammer said. "We haven't thrown anything in there that's real tricky. We're just in basic coverages."
Analysis: The defensive back does have a point. The Chargers haven't exactly been bringing it in the preseason like they will in the regular season. Despite the coaching change in San Diego, the personnel still there makes them worthy of being a top-five DST.
News: Chargers rookie safety Eric Weddle continued to look at home at Qualcomm Stadium. He intercepted QB Seneca Wallace early in the second quarter of Sunday's preseason game against the Seahawks and returned it 16 yards.
Analysis: While at Utah, Weddle had four interceptions in two games against San Diego State at Qualcomm Stadium. He had three last year, returning two for touchdowns. Weddle has major potential to be a good defensive back in the NFL but measures at 5-foot-11. With or without him, the Chargers DST remains a must-start in all Fantasy formats.
News: Chargers.com confirms that the club's second-round pick, safety Eric Weddle, agreed to a four-year contract late Monday night, ensuring that he will be in training camp on time.
Analysis: The San Diego DST was pretty good from a Fantasy perspective in 2006 and they will once again be a must-start in all formats heading into the new season. Consider them a top-five unit thanks to LBs Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips along with an underrated secondary. Weddle should help that defensive backfield.
News: On Monday, the San Diego Chargers signed linebacker Anthony Waters (third round) and linebacker Brandon Siler (seventh round) to four-year deals. They also inked cornerback Paul Oliver, who was taken in the fourth round of the supplemental draft.
Analysis: The San Diego DST was pretty good from a Fantasy perspective in 2006 and they will once again be a must-start in all formats heading into the new season. These players will all provide some depth.
News: The Chargers re-signed linebacker and special teams standout Carlos Polk to a two-year deal Friday. Polk, who was an unrestricted free agent, had 32 tackles and two sacks while playing in all 16 games for San Diego last season. Also Friday, linebacker Marques Harris, an exclusive-rights free agent, signed a one-year deal. He played in 15 games last season, with two starts, and had three sacks and 25 tackles.
Analysis: These signings boost the depth of the Chargers defense, but doesn't change their standing in Fantasy play.
News: The San Diego Chargers released linebacker Steve Foley and safety Terrence Kiel, both of whom had multiple run-ins with the law. The moves came several hours before the start of free agency. Foley was shot three times on Sept. 3 by an off-duty Coronado police officer who suspected him of drunken driving. Foley missed the season and said last month that his career might be over. The outside linebacker, who had 10 sacks in 2004, forfeited $775,000 in salary. Kiel pleaded guilty last month to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping codeine-based cough syrup to Texas and still faces charges for urinating outside a nightclub Dec. 18 in downtown San Diego.
Analysis: The Chargers are deep enough defensively to afford to lose both players. Expect the Chargers DST to be a top-five unit in 2007. Neither Foley nor Kiel should be considered in IDP league play at this time.
News: It's been a busy couple of days for the Chargers defense. Earlier this week, they named Ted Cottrell their defensive coordinator and ex-Bears defensive boss Ron Rivera their linebackers coach. On Tuesday, the team signed LB Shaun Phillips to a six-year contract extension that keeps him in San Diego through 2012. "Shaun is an integral part of our defense," said GM A.J. Smith. "He is a great pass rusher and last year he solidified his talents as an outstanding player against both the run and the pass. His play and his production speak for themselves. He made a lot of big plays for us last year that helped us win football games, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to watch him continue to do that over the years to come."
Analysis: The Chargers defense has undergone some changes of late, but they should still be formidable in 2007. Having Phillips on board only makes them more dangerous -- consider them a No. 1 unit next season.
News: On Thursday, the Cowboys named Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips as their new head coach, leaving a huge hole in the San Diego coaching staff. The team will move quickly to name a replacement. In addition, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that both the Chargers and LB Donnie Edwards are on the same page about him not returning to the club in 2007. "Donnie will not be part of the San Diego Chargers this year," GM A.J. Smith said.
Analysis: The Chargers defense should survive so long as they stay rooted in their current scheme. Losing Edwards will hurt if they don't replace him properly, but otherwise this is a talented defense worth using a middle- to late-round pick on in 2007 drafts.
News: Chargers DL Jacques Cesaire (knee) is doubtful, DL Derreck Robinson (foot) is questionable, while DL Luis Castillo (ankle) and DB Bhawoh Jue (knee) are listed as probable for Divisional Playoff game vs. New England.
Analysis: The Chargers DST was a pretty reliable Fantasy option during the season, but a challenge awaits in the form of Tom Brady and the Patriots. Brady thrives in postseason play and could have a very good day against the Chargers. Still, with pickings slim in postseason Fantasy leagues, the Chargers DST is still a very solid option.
News: The San Diego Chargers DST allowed 20 points and 444 total net yards in Week 17 against the Cardinals. They also had just one sack, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Chargers DST will once again be a solid Fantasy unit heading into the 2007 season barring any devastating preseason injuries.
News: The San Diego Chargers declared DE Luis Castillo (ankle), LB Randall Godfrey (hamstring), WR Az-Zahir Hakim, TE Ryan Krause, OG Scott Mruckowski, FB Andrew Pinnock, DT Derreck Robinson (foot) and 3QB Charlie Whitehurst inactive for Week 17 against the Cardinals.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above have any Fantasy value heading into the 2007 season, as each is projected as a reserve. Godfrey should be a starter, but he will still have minimal IDP Fantasy value.
News: The Chargers defense totaled six sacks and two interceptions at Seattle in Week 16. They did not do as well against the run, allowing Shaun Alexander to rush for 140 yards and two TDs.
Analysis: San Diego's defense should continue to play well vs. Arizona in Week 17.
News: On Friday, the Chargers upgraded DE Luis Castillo (ankle), LB Randall Godfrey (calf), LB Shaun Phillips (hamstring) and DE Derreck Robinson (foot) from questionable to probable. They all practiced on Friday and are expected to play vs. the Chiefs in Week 15.
Analysis: All of these upgrades only make San Diego's defense better. Use the unit vs. the Chiefs in Week 15.
News: The Chargers defense totaled four sacks and two forced fumbles vs. Denver in Week 14. They did hold Denver to 20 points, but allowed over 100 rush yards and close to 200 passing yards.
Analysis: The Chargers defense should be useful vs. Kansas City in Week 15.
News: The Chargers DST got two interceptions and two fumble recoveries against Buffalo with three sacks. DB Clinton Hart had an interception and a fumble recovery. DB Quentin Jammer had an interception. DL Igor Olshansky recovered a fumble. LB Shawne Merriman returned from a four-game suspension and had six tackles and two sacks. LB Donnie Edwards had 18 tackles. LB Shaun Phillips had five tackles and a sack.
Analysis: Consider the Chargers DST a low-end No. 1 option for Week 14 against Denver and use all regular IDP players.
News: The lights flickered back on for Shawne Merriman, who returned to the San Diego Chargers from his four-game steroid suspension on Monday, flashing a funky haircut and eager to resume pounding on quarterbacks. Merriman's first game back will be at Buffalo on Sunday, when the AFC West-leading Chargers (9-2) will try to extend their winning streak to six. "I think I'll be a little bit anxious waiting for Sunday to get here, but Sunday I'll be fine, just getting out there, flying around, knocking some heads," the star outside linebacker said.
Analysis: Consider the Chargers defense an even better defensive unit with Merriman back. Be sure to use them as a No. 1 defense at Buffalo in Week 13.
News: The Chargers allowed 245 yards and 14 points in a Week 12 win over the Raiders. LB Randall Godfrey led all tacklers with 13 and also had a sack. LB Shaun Philips had 1 1/2 sacks and nine tackles. DB Quentin Jammer and DB Drayton Florence had interceptions.
Analysis: Consider the Chargers a low-end Fantasy option for Week 13 at Buffalo. Philips is a solid IDP option and should be starting in most Fantasy leagues. Godfrey, Jammer and Florence could all be used as low-end options.
News: Chargers outside linebacker Shaun Phillips was running so well during individual drills that it wasn't apparent he has a sore calf. And free safety Marlon McCree, who also has a calf injury, said he will practice on Friday. "I'll be ready," McCree said. "I got a lot of good work in."
Analysis: Expect them to play, and expect the Chargers to whitewash the Raiders in Week 12. Start the Chargers defense in all leagues.
News: San Diego's defense allowed 326 yards of offense and 27 points to the Broncos in their win Sunday night while picking off Jake Plummer once.
Analysis: The Chargers are a solid option in Week 12 when they host the lowly Raiders. Consider them a top unit for the upcoming week.
News: The Chargers defense allowed 41 points, 440 pass yards and over 120 rush yards at Cincinnati in Week 10. They did tally two sacks and a forced fumble.
Analysis: Expect the Chargers to be more reliable at Denver in Week 11. So long as they can stop the Broncos running attack, they should do better than they did this week.
News: Chargers DT Luis Castillo (ankle) has been downgraded to OUT and will miss Week 10 at Cincinnati. However, teammate DT Igor Olshansky (personal) has been upgraded off the injury report and should start.
Analysis: The Chargers are still a recommended Fantasy option in Week 10, although they will have to contend with QB Carson Palmer, RB Rudi Johnson, WR Chad Johnson and the dangerous Bengals offense.
News: The San Diego defense allowed 25 points and 293 total net yards in Week 9 against the Browns. They were able to come up with five sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Chargers are still a recommended Fantasy option in Week 10, although they will have to content with QB Carson Palmer, RB Rudi Johnson, WR Chad Johnson and the dangerous Bengals offense.
News: The loss of LB Shawne Merriman, the NFL sack leader with 8 1/2, can't be minimized, especially with Shaun Phillips, the opposite starter, possibly out for the second straight week with a calf injury. Merriman dropped his appeal this week and will miss the next four games: Browns, at Cincinnati, at Denver and Raiders. Eyes will be on sixth-year LB Carlos Polk, who will replace Merriman. Polk has been slowed by injuries the past two years and hasn't started this year; he has with nine tackles. Polk is a run-stuffer and won't come close to delivering the pass rush which Merriman features. Phillips is getting close to returning, but this week might be a stretch. He sat out last week with a strained calf. "I'm 75 percent, day-to-day," said Phillips, second to Merriman among Chargers with six sacks. "If I'm not good playing this week, it will be one more week. I think we will be OK because we got a good nucleus and we got good guys to take care of business."
Analysis: Lucky for the Chargers in Week 9 they face the Browns. Consider them a good start even without Merriman and Phillips.
News: Chargers LB Shawne Merriman has dropped his appeal of suspension for violating the league's steroid policy and will miss the team's next four games. He will be able to return Week 13 at Buffalo.
Analysis: San Diego's defense is definitely going to be a little softer against the run and blitzing the quarterback without Merriman. However, against the Browns in Week 9, they are still a desirable Fantasy unit.
News: The Chargers defense scored on a fumble return by Marlon McCree and added three sacks (all Shawne Merriman) and two forced fumbles vs. St. Louis in Week 8.
Analysis: Expect a fabulous outing by the Chargers when they play vs. Cleveland in Week 9.
News: Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is free to keep practicing and playing while he appeals a positive steroid test that could lead to a four-game suspension. Merriman's appeal is expected to be heard Nov. 7, which means he can play in the Chargers' next two games, both at home, against St. Louis and Cleveland. If the Chargers lose Merriman for four games, it'll be a huge blow to a defense that has lost starters Shaun Phillips and Igor Olshanksy to injuries. "I just know what I tested positive for, and that's nandrolone," Merriman said. "I'm still finding out information about it myself. Whatever it was, it definitely wasn't intentional at all."
Analysis: This definitely helps the status of the Chargers defense over the next two weeks. However, with the Rams coming to San Diego in Week 8, this might be the week to sit them down for a better matchup.
News: LB Akbar Gbaja-Biamila signed a two-year contract Tuesday with the San Diego Chargers, who made room on the roster by waiving linebacker Nick Speegle. Gbaja-Biamila had signed with San Diego in January, but was released on Sept. 2. He played for San Diego State.
Analysis: Neither Gbaja-Biamila or Speegle are worth a look in IDP Fantasy leagues. However, the Chargers DST is a must-start in all leagues for Week 8 against the Rams.
News: Attorney David Cornwell said he believed Shawne Merriman tested positive for the steroid nandrolone, which is prohibited under the NFL's substance abuse policy. Cornwell said the substance was in a supplement Merriman has been taking. "He did not go into the back alley somewhere and put a needle in his butt for steroids," Cornwell said on Monday.
Analysis: Merriman's attorney said the Chargers' outside linebacker failed a drug test because of a tainted supplement and will continue to play while appealing his four-game suspension.
News: The Chargers lost linebacker Shaun Phillips for four-to-six weeks in Week 7 at Kansas City. He hurt his right calf in the second quarter. He's the team's sack leader with six. But in more significant news, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Chargers LB Shawne Merriman has been told that he will be suspended four games for violating the league's steroid policy. No official word has been announced from the NFL or the team. The Chargers defense had an off week, totaling two sacks and one forced fumble and recovery at Kansas City in Week 7. The Chiefs rushed for 134 yards and caught for 232.
Analysis: The Chargers defense hosts the high-powered Rams in Week 8, so don't be too quick to use this defense then, especially without Phillips and LB Shawne Merriman (if Merriman is indeed suspended).
News: The Chargers sacked 49ers QB Alex Smith five times in Week 6 at San Francisco. They forced one turnover in the game, but also allowed 19 points and 274 yards.
Analysis: The Chargers have been a must-start unit all season and they'll have that same label for Week 7 at Kansas City.
News: Chargers practice squad cornerback Markus Curry was released by the team Monday, just hours after he was arrested on suspicion of committing domestic violence.
Analysis: No corresponding roster move was announced by the team. However, Curry had no Fantasy value in IDP leagues and his loss does not affect the tremendous value of the Chargers DST.
News: The San Diego defense allowed just 13 points in Week 5 against the Steelers while giving up 265 total net yards. The Chargers also racked up five sacks and two interceptions.
Analysis: The Chargers DST is a must-start unit for Week 6 in San Francisco.
News: The San Diego Chargers announced WR Greg Camarillo, CB Cletis Gordon, FS Bhawoh Jue, T Leander Jordan, TE Ryan Krause, SS Andre Lott, FB Andrew Pinnock, QB Billy Volek (third quarterback).
Analysis: None of the players are major Fantasy impact players, so no big loss here.
News: The Chargers defense totaled two sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles at Baltimore in Week 4. They did hold the Ravens to 16 points and under 60 rushing yards, but they lost.
Analysis: San Diego's defense will play vs. Pittsburgh in Week 5. It's not the best matchup, but since the Steelers run the ball, it should play in San Diego's hands. Use them as a solid bye-week replacement or a low-end option in Week 5.
News: According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers fully expect DL Igor Olshansky to be ready to play Sunday against the Ravens. He practiced Tuesday for the first time since injuring his knee in Week 1 at Oakland. ”It feels good and I was able to do everything,” Olshansky said. ”I'm good to go.”
Analysis: While it looks as though the Chargers defense will get a boost from Olshansky's presence, his IDP Fantasy value remains low since he is viewed as a run-stopping specialist. Chargers DST owners should view his return as a serious boost to a run defense that has allowed average of 71 yards a game, fifth-best in the league. The way the Chargers DST have been playing this season, they are a must-start Week 4 vs. Baltimore.
News: Chargers strong safety Terrence Kiel admitted to shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup to Texas, DEA officials said Wednesday, a day after the player was arrested at team headquarters. While Kiel did not tell the DEA his motive, the agency in Texas has found widespread abuse of codeine-based cough syrup mixed with soft drinks or drugs and referred to as "lean," said John S. Fernandes, the special agent in charge of the San Diego office. A pint bottle of "lean" can cost between $200 and $325 on the street, he said. Kiel was arrested on two counts of transporting a controlled substance and three counts of possession for sale of a controlled substance. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. The DEA is investigating where Kiel got the cough syrup, who else may be involved and the intent.
Analysis: It was the fourth run-in with the law by a Chargers defender since April. San Diego heads to Baltimore in Week 4; still consider them a good DST unit to own for the game.

Chargers D playing well
News: The real good news for the Chargers defense after two games is the improvement of the secondary. Once again it supplied good coverage and even contributed a turnover when Quentin Jammer snagged an interception in Week 2 vs. Tennessee. The pass rush didn't record a sack, but that's not to say they didn't pester Kerry Collins and Vince Young. S Marlon McCree gets a lot of credit for getting the secondary in the proper positions.
Analysis: The Chargers defense has been a pleasant surprise in all Fantasy formats thus far and should be starting when they return to action in Week 4 vs. Baltimore.

Chargers finally give up points
News: The Chargers DST gave up 7 points against the Titans. Quentin Jammer and Shawne Merriman also had interceptions.
Analysis: The Chargers have now given up only seven points in two weeks. The Chargers are off for Week 3 but are a No. 1 DST for Week 4 against Baltimore.

Chargers D dominant on Monday
News: The San Diego DST was dominant in Week 1 at Oakland, as they blanked the Raiders in the Black Hole by a 27-0 score. They allowed 129 total net yards, 57 of which came in the final 10 minutes. LB Shawne Merriman had three of San Diego's nine sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Chargers will look to carry over their momentum into the Week 2 home opener against the Tennessee Titans. They'll likely be a highly-coveted free agent addition in most Fantasy leagues for owners who had defenses which did not do so hot in the opening week.

DB Cletis Gordon OUT for Week 1
News: DB Gordon (wrist) is listed as an inactive for Week 1 at Oakland.
Analysis: When he is able to play, Gordon only provides depth for the San Diego DST. They remain as solid play for Week 1 at Oakland.

Chargers lose Foley for season
News: Chargers linebacker Steve Foley will miss the season after being shot by an off-duty police officer Sunday. Foley was placed on the non-football injured reserve list on Monday, a day after he was shot near his suburban Poway home by an off-duty Coronado officer. The outside linebacker, who was being counted on to help anchor the toughest run defense in the NFL, remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to his agent, David Levine. "Our concern right now is for Steve's overall health and well-being," Chargers GM A.J. Smith said in a statement. "Steves health needs to be his No. 1 priority. Football is secondary right now. Steve needs to focus on his recovery."
Analysis: Foley is a key contributor to the San Diego defense, but he's not the lynchpin of the squad. Consider San Diego's DST a low-end starting unit, though they will have their hands full in Week 1 at Oakland. They could be playing with a heavy heart as they go on without one of their veterans.

Chargers' Foley shot, in hospital
News: Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was shot by an off-duty policeman early Sunday morning in his second run-in with police in 4 1/2 months. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said the wounds were not life-threatening. "All we're worried about is that he's OK," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press in a telephone interview. Foley's agent, David Levine, told the AP that Foley was shot three times and had surgery for wounds to his leg, arm and chest. "He's out of danger at this point," Levine said. The Chargers will open the season at Oakland on Sept. 11, the day Foley turns 31.
Analysis: Foley is a key contributor to the San Diego defense, but he's not the lynchpin of the squad. Consider San Diego's DST a low-end starting unit, though they will have their hands full in Week 1 at Oakland.

S Edwards play, not DL Page
News: S Donnie Edwards (back) was able to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Packers, but he did not record any defensive statistics. DL Chase Page (knee) was inactive and his return date is uncertain.
Analysis: The Chargers are still worth regarding as a sleeper DST unit thanks to their young and talented players as well as their solid veterans (and the nimble Darren Sproles returning kicks).

Top pick Cromartie signs with SD
News: Chargers first-round pick CB Antonio Cromartie, an early-entry draftee from Florida State, has agreed to a five-year deal and will join the team at training camp.
Analysis: Cromartie won't play regularly as a rookie, though he should develop into a stud ballhawk. The Chargers DST is still worth regarding as a sleeper DST unit thanks to their young and talented players as well as their solid veterans (and the nimble Darren Sproles returning kicks).

Cromartie top Bolts pick
News: Florida State CB Antonio Cromartie, who missed 2005 with a torn ACL, was the Chargers first-round pick (19th overall). Cromartie is considered to have great speed and is also 6-foot-2, which makes him a potential asset as a cornerback. They also added LB Tim Dobbins and DT Chase Page.
Analysis: Had he not been hurt, Cromartie might have been a top-10 pick. He might be able to start right away, making him valuable. The Chargers DST is primed to be a starting unit in 2006.

San Diego has Edwards on block
News: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers GM A.J. Smith has confirmed that he's attempting to trade LB Donnie Edwards. The team is looking for a first-day pick in the draft in a deal.
Analysis: Edwards, 33, recorded 152 total tackles, three sacks and nine passes defensed last season.

Safety concerns for San Diego
News: The Chargers are concerned about their health at safety going into the game. Bhawoh Jue (knee) didn't play last week, but has worked this week. Still, his knee could become fatigued which could slow him Saturday. Plus, SS Terrence Kiel (ankle) has already been declared out for this week. Clinton Hart has done well as a backup, but he can't play both spots if injuries arise. The Chargers will turn to veteran Jerry Wilson, a starter before losing his job to Jue in camp. But Wilson has seldom seen the field this year and how he holds up is worth watching if pressed into extensive action.
Analysis: The Chargers are just primed to get chewed up by TE Tony Gonzalez. This isn't the week to roll out the Chargers DST in Fantasy leagues.

Chargers to chase Frerotte
News: The Dolphins' offensive line has been shaky, and now it must face a Chargers' pass rush which has 38 sacks, which is third in the league. The Chargers will go all out -- more playing time for Shaun Phillips; keeping Shawne Merriman on the field on passing downs -- to pester QB Gus Frerotte. He will soon learn that this isn't the same pass rush he faced in 2000 while in Denver, when he set career highs against the Chargers in attempts (58), completions (36) and passing yards (462). He did have four interceptions that day.
Analysis: The Chargers should be good enough to use as a starting DST unit vs. Miami in Week 14.

Chargers DST hammers Bills

Analysis: The Chargers travel to Washington in Week 12 and are a solid Fantasy play.
News: Outside linebackers Shawne Merriman and Steve Foley returned to practice and both are expected to play when the San Diego Chargers host the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.
Analysis: Merriman, a rookie who leads the Chargers with five sacks is an excellent option in IDP leagues. Foley, an eight-year veteran and the Chargers' sack leader last year with a career-best 10, has missed the last two games because of a strained abdominal muscle. The Chargers DST will face J.P. Losman at home and could make a solid start in larger leagues.

News: According to published reports, J.P. Losman will be the starter for the Bills in Week 11 at San Diego. Kelly Holcomb (concussion) has not practiced yet this week.
Analysis: The Chargers rank near the bottom of the league when it comes to pass defense so playing the run-happy Bills bodes well for them. Expect the Bills to try to run early and often against the top run defense in the NFL. The Chargers DST is a decent option for Week 11.

Chargers D two-faced
News: How good is the Chargers' run defense? No one does it better. For the first time this year, the team is ranked No. 1 in the NFL, allowing 79.6 rushing yards per game. The same can't be said about a pass defense that allows 248.6 yards per outing and is ranked No. 30.
Analysis: The Chargers will face Buffalo at home in Week 11. The Bills QB situation is a bit murky right now due to Kelly Holcomb's concussion. Coming off a bye, the Chargers DST is a decent start in Week 11 vs. Buffalo.

Chargers' rookie undergoes surgery
News: Terrence Kiel, shot during an attempted carjacking on July 4, had surgery Wednesday to remove a bullet from his abdomen and fragments from his left knee. Kiel, who had been the leading contender to start at strong safety, will miss at least the first two exhibition games. A broken bone in his lower left leg won't require surgery. Smith said, referring to the first regular-season game on Sept. 7 at Kansas City. Vernon Fox will likely start at strong safety for the Chargers. San Diego's defense will be vulnerable to the pass and should not be drafted in Fantasy leagues.
