Bills release QB Kevin Kolb

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/11/2014) The Bills have released quarterback Kevin Kolb after he failed to play a single down for them in 2013. The Philadelphia Inquirer suggests that Kolb will retire after a career littered with concussions.

Kevin Kolb not medically cleared yet

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/20/2014) Bills coach Doug Marrone said quarterback Kevin Kolb, who spent 2013 on injured reserve following another concussion, has yet to be medically cleared. “What I was told is there is a process and the medical process, he’s still going through it and we’re waiting for him to come back for another medical check, which is coming up,” Marrone told the team's website.

Kolb is expected to be released. It's unclear if he'll play again.

Marrone: Kevin Kolb's status up in the air

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/14/2014) Bills head coach Doug Marrone told WGR 550 on Friday that he's not sure what the plan is for oft-concussed quarterback Kevin Kolb. He suffered what is believed to be at least his third concussion of his career during the team's third preseason game and did not play in 2014.

"He's under contract and I'm not aware of really what exactly is going on right now, whether he's planning to come back, whether he's not going to come back," Marrone said. "I have not been informed of anything to that nature."

Kevin Kolb expected to be cut

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/3/2014) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb, who went on injured reserve after suffering an August concussion, is expected to be released, reports ESPN.com. The Bills view EJ Manuel as their starter, and Kolb would carry a $3.6 million cap number in 2014.

"It would be a surprise if Kolb remains on the roster at the start of the 2014 league year in March," the report said.

Marrone: E.J. Manuel healthy and ready to play Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/4/2013) Those who feared that Bills third-string quarterback Jeff Tuel would be forced to start the opener against New England or that fellow rookie E.J. Manuel would have to play hurt have nothing to worry about, Doug Marrone told ESPN.

"He's 110 percent healthy," Marrone said after watching Manuel practice the last three days. "He looks good out there. So that's what we're going to go with."

Manuel made a rapid recovery from minor knee surgery in August and became the winner of the quarterback competition by default when Kevin Kolb was placed on season-ending IR with a concussion that could end his career.

Kevin Kolb placed on season-ending IR

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/30/2013) The Bills have placed injured quarterback Kevin Kolb on the season-ending injured reserve list, a league source told WGR 550 AM radio in Buffalo.

Kolb, who signed with the Bills in the offseason, suffered a concussion in the team's third preseason game that could potentially end his career. Undrafted rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel is expected to start Week 1 against the Patriots if EJ Manuel is not ready to return from knee surgery.

Bills: Career-ending speculation did not come from Kevin Kolb

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/26/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone confirmed Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion Saturday against Washington, but said speculation about it being a career-ending injury did not come from the quarterback. Marrone said Kolb would focus on recovery first.

Report: Kevin Kolb's concussion might be career-ending

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/25/2013) The Bills are concerned that Kevin Kolb's latest concussion could end his career "and they're operating with that in mind," a source told the Buffalo News. Buffalo added quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Thaddeus Lewis on Sunday.

First-round pick EJ Manuel is recovering from a knee injury. The Bills hope he'll be able to play in the regular-season opener.

Bills show meager attack after Kevin Kolb leaves game

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/24/2013) The Bills looked overwhelmed offensively after second-string quarterback Kevin Kolb left the game against Washington with concussion-like symptoms. They called nothing but dink-and-dunk passes the rest of the way. That left their fans wondering who can lead the team downfield if rookie E.J. Manuel (knee) and Kolb are not ready to start the season.

Third-string quarterback Jeff Tuel  completed 10 of 17 passes, but for just 63 yards. And after featured back C.J. Spiller scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, the Bills were blanked.

Other numbers speak to the ineptitude of the Bills offense Saturday with Kolb out. They finished with a mere eight first downs and managed just 2 of 13 third-down conversions.

Kevin Kolb sidelined with possible concussion

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/24/2013) The Bills are running short on quarterbacks. Kevin Kolb was escorted to the locker room with concussion-like symptoms early in the second quarter against the Redskins and has been ruled out for the rest of the game. He left with the head injury after being hit on his helmet. Rookie E.J. Manuel is already sidelined with a knee injury. Jeff Tuel has taken over under center.

Marrone won't rule out EJ Manuel for Week 1

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/19/2013) Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel might miss the rest of the preseason after undergoing minor arthroscopic knee surgery, but coach Doug Marrone won't rule him out from playing in Week 1

"We're going to put the best players out there," Marrone said per the official team website. "... There is a good chance of [him playing Week 1] and the problem I have with that is again, a lot of it is just how he comes back. Again there goes the variable thing of when he comes back and missed time ... nobody really starts where they left off. We saw that with Kevin (Kolb) and we saw that with EJ. The first game EJ goes in there and you see early on a little of the footwork, a little of the jitters and then all of a sudden he get in a rhythm and starts throwing very well and throwing very accurately."

FOX Sports reports Manuel had the surgery Sunday and will miss two to four weeks

E.J. Manuel out through preseason

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/17/2013) The Bills have announced that rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss the remainder of the preseason with a knee injury. An MRI revealed the injury to Manuel, who has performed impressively while competing with Kevin Kolb for the starting spot.

Kevin Kolb looks unimpressive in first preseason action

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb got the start in Friday's preseason game against the Vikings, after being held out of action the prior week with a knee injury.

Kolb, who is battling for the starting job with rookie EJ Manuel, did not look sharp in his first action. Kolb was 13 for 21 with 111 yards passing in the first half of the game, and he went just 2 for 9 on third down with him at the helm.

Kolb also threw an interception, and failed to lead the Bills' offense on any touchdown-scoring drives.

Bills opt for Kevin Kolb in second preseason game

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/14/2013) The Bills announced Wednesday that veteran Kevin Kolb will start Friday's preseason game against the Vikings, after missing the opener with a knee injury. EJ Manuel will come off the bench in relief of Kolb, after starting an excelling in the opener.

Coach Doug Marrone told reporters Kolb likely would have started the opener if he hadn't been sidelined by a knee injury. Kolb and Manuel are battling for the starting job, and Manuel got off to a head start in the opener, completing 16 of 21 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Sounds like Kevin Kolb will play Friday

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/13/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday he's getting quarterback Kevin Kolb ready to play in the team's second preseason game vs. the Vikings. Kolb had missed time with a knee injury.

"Obviously I watched him very closely yesterday and again today," Marrone said per the official website. "And I thought today he looked really good. So it's to a point now where we're going to get him ready to play."

Kolb and E.J. Manuel are expected to split reps in the game as they resume their battle to start.

Bills not sure Kevin Kolb will play Friday

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/12/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone is unsure whether quarterback Kevin Kolb will play Friday against Minnesota, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. Kolb tweaked his knee nine days ago and did not play in Sunday's 44-20 win over Indianapolis, enabling rookie EJ Manuel to play the entire first half.

Kevin Kolb unlikely to play Sunday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/10/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb, who practiced for the first time since a freak knee injury, will suit up, but may not play in Sunday's preseason opener against the Colts.

Head coach Doug Marrone is considering keeping him as the emergency quarterback. Rookie EJ Manuel is scheduled to start in his place, according to the team's official website.

"I think we all know that Kevin has been gone for a couple of days and coming off an injury and we're just working him back in and we're going to dress him for the game, but EJ will start the game," said Marrone. "He is going to dress and he is going to be there and knock on wood if we do need one we'll put him in there and he'll just be handing the ball off and not put him in jeopardy."

Kevin Kolb back at practice Friday

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/9/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb is back with his teammates at training camp Friday, reports the team's official website. Kolb has been out with an injured knee since Saturday.

His status for Sunday's first preseason game at Indianapolis is unknown. Kolb is competing with rookie EJ Manuel for the starting job.

Kevin Kolb could practice Friday

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/8/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb is expected to practice Friday after being away due to a death in the family, reports the team's official website.

It is unknown if Kolb will play in Sunday's preseason game against the Colts.

"I'm going to wait to see how the practices go," coach Doug Marrone said. "Things could come up with that situation. We'll probably talk about that Friday evening, once we know we're going to a Saturday walk through where nothing should happen barring a sickness and I'll have a plan set in place for that then. We haven't had discussions about that."

Kolb will have missed a total of five practices by the time he returns to the team. He is competing with rookie EJ Manuel for the starting job.

Looks like E.J. Manuel will start Bills preseason game

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/7/2013) Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel looks like the starter for the team's preseason game Sunday at the Colts, though coach Doug Marrone did not confirm as much.

What Marrone did confirm is that veteran Kevin Kolb should rejoin the team Thursday and meet with doctors on Friday before practice. Kolb slipped on a mat this week and hurt his knee in the process.

Marrone added it's too early to say if Kolb will play on Sunday. Meanwhile, Manuel has taken approximately 100 more snaps while Kolb's been sidelined, the official team website says.

Kevin Kolb not participating in live scrimmage

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/5/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb has been excused from camp to attend a relative's funeral. He's one of several high-profile players, including C.J. Spiller, who is not participating in Monday's live scrimmage.

Kolb slipped on a rubber mat Saturday, bumping his knee, and had been listed as day-to-day.

Bills hopeful Kevin Kolb will scrimmage Monday

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/4/2013) Knocked out of practice Saturday after slipping on the rubber mats between practice fields, Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb might be able to play in Monday's scrimmage, according to WGR 550.

"We're trying to get him back for tomorrow," coach Doug Marrone said Sunday. "We just kept him out today off the field, because if he's standing on the field, it's not something that's going to help him at this point in time. We're trying to get him back for tomorrow, which we think we have an opportunity to do that."

Kolb bumped his knee in the embarrassing slip-and-fall. He's battling rookie EJ Manuel for Buffalo's starting job.

Kevin Kolb suffers slip and fall

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(8/3/2013) Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb slipped and fell while transferring from one field to another, NFL.com reports Saturday.

Kolb bumped his knee and is considered day to day. The injury is not considered serious.

EJ Manuel could pass Kevin Kolb on depth chart

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/2/2013) Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel appears to be gaining on Kevin Kolb, reports NFL.com.

The report says Kolb continues to show poor pocket presence while Manuel has looked "comfortable, confident, strong-armed and accurate." He was "spectacular" early in the week, outplaying Kolb in three consecutive practices.

Bills general manager Doug Whaley said on SiriusXM radio that he might be leaning toward Manuel as the starter this year.

"Most successful quarterbacks have that 'it' factor. (Manuel) has that 'it' factor," Whaley said. "When he walks into a room, there's a presence and people take notice. He's going to be the face of our franchise, and it's not too big for him."

E.J. Manuel gets taste of first-team reps

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/1/2013) True to his word, Doug Marrone and his coaching staff gave rookie E.J. Manuel some first-team reps in team drills Wednesday. Marrone said previously he would ramp up Manuel's first-team snaps until he and veteran Kevin Kolb were at 50-50.

According to ESPN, Manuel didn't make any mistakes in the pocket.

Kolb later took over first-team reps for two periods and was intercepted twice.

A decision will be made on who starts at quarterback for the Bills in late August, according to Marrone.
