Kevin Kolb expected to be cut

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(2/3/2014) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb, who went on injured reserve after suffering an August concussion, is expected to be released, reports ESPN.com. The Bills view EJ Manuel as their starter, and Kolb would carry a $3.6 million cap number in 2014.

"It would be a surprise if Kolb remains on the roster at the start of the 2014 league year in March," the report said.

Marrone: E.J. Manuel healthy and ready to play Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/4/2013) Those who feared that Bills third-string quarterback Jeff Tuel would be forced to start the opener against New England or that fellow rookie E.J. Manuel would have to play hurt have nothing to worry about, Doug Marrone told ESPN.

"He's 110 percent healthy," Marrone said after watching Manuel practice the last three days. "He looks good out there. So that's what we're going to go with."

Manuel made a rapid recovery from minor knee surgery in August and became the winner of the quarterback competition by default when Kevin Kolb was placed on season-ending IR with a concussion that could end his career.

Kevin Kolb placed on season-ending IR

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/30/2013) The Bills have placed injured quarterback Kevin Kolb on the season-ending injured reserve list, a league source told WGR 550 AM radio in Buffalo.

Kolb, who signed with the Bills in the offseason, suffered a concussion in the team's third preseason game that could potentially end his career. Undrafted rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel is expected to start Week 1 against the Patriots if EJ Manuel is not ready to return from knee surgery.

Bills show meager attack after Kevin Kolb leaves game

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/24/2013) The Bills looked overwhelmed offensively after second-string quarterback Kevin Kolb left the game against Washington with concussion-like symptoms. They called nothing but dink-and-dunk passes the rest of the way. That left their fans wondering who can lead the team downfield if rookie E.J. Manuel (knee) and Kolb are not ready to start the season.

Third-string quarterback Jeff Tuel  completed 10 of 17 passes, but for just 63 yards. And after featured back C.J. Spiller scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, the Bills were blanked.

Other numbers speak to the ineptitude of the Bills offense Saturday with Kolb out. They finished with a mere eight first downs and managed just 2 of 13 third-down conversions.

Marrone won't rule out EJ Manuel for Week 1

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/19/2013) Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel might miss the rest of the preseason after undergoing minor arthroscopic knee surgery, but coach Doug Marrone won't rule him out from playing in Week 1

"We're going to put the best players out there," Marrone said per the official team website. "... There is a good chance of [him playing Week 1] and the problem I have with that is again, a lot of it is just how he comes back. Again there goes the variable thing of when he comes back and missed time ... nobody really starts where they left off. We saw that with Kevin (Kolb) and we saw that with EJ. The first game EJ goes in there and you see early on a little of the footwork, a little of the jitters and then all of a sudden he get in a rhythm and starts throwing very well and throwing very accurately."

FOX Sports reports Manuel had the surgery Sunday and will miss two to four weeks

E.J. Manuel out through preseason

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/17/2013) The Bills have announced that rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss the remainder of the preseason with a knee injury. An MRI revealed the injury to Manuel, who has performed impressively while competing with Kevin Kolb for the starting spot.

Bills opt for Kevin Kolb in second preseason game

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/14/2013) The Bills announced Wednesday that veteran Kevin Kolb will start Friday's preseason game against the Vikings, after missing the opener with a knee injury. EJ Manuel will come off the bench in relief of Kolb, after starting an excelling in the opener.

Coach Doug Marrone told reporters Kolb likely would have started the opener if he hadn't been sidelined by a knee injury. Kolb and Manuel are battling for the starting job, and Manuel got off to a head start in the opener, completing 16 of 21 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Sounds like Kevin Kolb will play Friday

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/13/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday he's getting quarterback Kevin Kolb ready to play in the team's second preseason game vs. the Vikings. Kolb had missed time with a knee injury.

"Obviously I watched him very closely yesterday and again today," Marrone said per the official website. "And I thought today he looked really good. So it's to a point now where we're going to get him ready to play."

Kolb and E.J. Manuel are expected to split reps in the game as they resume their battle to start.

Looks like E.J. Manuel will start Bills preseason game

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/7/2013) Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel looks like the starter for the team's preseason game Sunday at the Colts, though coach Doug Marrone did not confirm as much.

What Marrone did confirm is that veteran Kevin Kolb should rejoin the team Thursday and meet with doctors on Friday before practice. Kolb slipped on a mat this week and hurt his knee in the process.

Marrone added it's too early to say if Kolb will play on Sunday. Meanwhile, Manuel has taken approximately 100 more snaps while Kolb's been sidelined, the official team website says.

EJ Manuel could pass Kevin Kolb on depth chart

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/2/2013) Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel appears to be gaining on Kevin Kolb, reports NFL.com.

The report says Kolb continues to show poor pocket presence while Manuel has looked "comfortable, confident, strong-armed and accurate." He was "spectacular" early in the week, outplaying Kolb in three consecutive practices.

Bills general manager Doug Whaley said on SiriusXM radio that he might be leaning toward Manuel as the starter this year.

"Most successful quarterbacks have that 'it' factor. (Manuel) has that 'it' factor," Whaley said. "When he walks into a room, there's a presence and people take notice. He's going to be the face of our franchise, and it's not too big for him."

E.J. Manuel gets taste of first-team reps

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/1/2013) True to his word, Doug Marrone and his coaching staff gave rookie E.J. Manuel some first-team reps in team drills Wednesday. Marrone said previously he would ramp up Manuel's first-team snaps until he and veteran Kevin Kolb were at 50-50.

According to ESPN, Manuel didn't make any mistakes in the pocket.

Kolb later took over first-team reps for two periods and was intercepted twice.

A decision will be made on who starts at quarterback for the Bills in late August, according to Marrone.

Marrone: QB decision coming in about a month

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/29/2013) Bills head coach Doug Marrone won't decide on who will start at quarterback in Week 1 until he starts preparing for his opponent that week, the Patriots.

Kevin Kolb took most of the first-team reps in practice Sunday with rookie E.J. Manuel running mostly with the second-team, but Marrone said that will change. The plan is to give Manuel more playing time with the starters until they're split evenly with Kolb. From there, Marrone is hoping it's clear which quarterback gives the Bills the best chance to win now.

"Really if you can get 10-12 days prior to that first game, that's when you're going to get pressed for time and have to make a decision on a quarterback," Marrone said. "That's when you're probably going to start preparing 10 days out of the first game."

Kevin Kolb believes QB competition is fair

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/3/2013) Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb has been a part of many starting competitions over the course of his career but considers the one he's in now with rookie EJ Manuel to be among the most fair he's been a part of. Kolb admitted that in the past he's been a part of biased battles where the coach knows who he wants to start but says this time he and Manuel are both learning the Bills' new offense and realizes the man who knows the offense best will start

"I'm not even concerned with [the competition]," he told the official team website. "I haven't even thought about it really and that's the honest truth because I have so much to address personally as a player coming into a new system. I know EJ probably does as well being a rookie. That's kind of the way I would feel most guys are approaching it right now. ... Don't get me wrong it's still a competition. I want to be out there more than anything in the world playing on Sundays. I approach the competition like I'm competing against the playbook, I'm competing against that defense, I'm not competing against the other guy in the red jersey."
