News: The 49ers spent three third-day draft picks on their defense, adding Notre Dame linebacker Darius Fleming, Michigan State safety Trenton Robinson and Virginia defensive end Cam Johnson. They are the only additions to the Niners' defense this offseason.
Analysis: It's not a bad thing that the Niners defense comes back intact, is it? After all, they were outstanding against the run and the pass and finished as the top unit in Fantasy Football. Fifty sacks, 25 interceptions and 18 fumble recoveries will do that for you. Plan on drafting the 49ers DST as a No. 1 unit, and they should be selected with a pick as early as Round 10 in standard formats.
News: The 49ers entered the NFC Championship Game against the Giants with the best run defense in the NFL but they had a hard time slowing down the run on Sunday. San Francisco allowed 328 yards of total offense, including 150 on the ground, in the 20-17 overtime loss. While they were able to sack QB Eli Manning six times, including 2.5 by Ray McDonald, they were unable to pick him off. WR Kyle Williams also fumbled two kick returns in the defeat.
Analysis: The 49ers sported one of the best defenses in the league throughout the year as they allowed the second-least points in the NFL during the regular season. Most of their success came from their front-seven, and they were even able to keep things going despite LB Patrick Willis missing time due to a hamstring injury. The unit in San Francisco is very young and athletic and should only get better with time. Consider the 49ers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option on Draft Day in 2012.
News: The San Francisco defense allowed a staggering 462 passing yards to New Orleans QB Drew Brees, but still managed to escape with a 36-32 victory over the Saints during their NFC Divisional Playoff matchup on Saturday. Brees also threw two interceptions -- his first in the postseason in five years -- as the 49ers forced five turnovers during the thrilling game. San Francisco's top-ranked rush defense held firm again and yielded just 37 rushing yards and no touchdowns. The unit has allowed just one two rushing scores all season.
Analysis: Brees never looked comfortable against the 49ers' swarming defense and was sacked three times. San Francisco's two first-half interceptions halted Brees' NFL-record streak of 226 postseason passes without an interception after Dashon Goldson's pick in the first quarter. The 49ers should be considered a high-end option in Fantasy playoff formats for the NFC Championship, and continue to be viewed as a No. 1 Fantasy DST in 2012.
News: For most of the afternoon, the 49ers DST enjoyed a productive outing against the Rams in Week 17. While they held on for a win, the Rams ran up 17 points in the final period, putting a dent in an otherwise solid performance. Even with the late surge, the Rams amassed just 311 yards of offense, and 49ers DB Tarell Brown recorded a pair of interceptions. The 49ers also sacked Rams QB Kellen Clemens three times, though on the third and final sack, Clemens injured his right ankle and left the game.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has been one of the league's stingiest defenses throughout the season, and they could continue to thrive during the playoffs. Their DST unit will be worth using in postseason Fantasy formats, but they will need to sit for the first week, as the 49ers have a first-round bye.
News: The 49ers DST heads into the Week 17 regular-season finale at St. Louis needing a victory to ensure first-round bye and lock up the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff picture. For that reason, the DST will be playing hard against the Rams. That is bad news for St. Louis, which is likely to be in a tough QB situation again with Kellen Clemens starting last week. The Rams are allowing opposing DST units to rack up the second-most Fantasy points per game in the NFL. The last time the Rams played San Francisco, the 49ers DST held them to just 157 yards in a shutout.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has been one of the best units all season and that isn't likely to change heading into the important Week 17 game. The Rams have been one of the worst offenses this season and have afforded massive Fantasy production opposing DST units. All that equals to a great game for the 49ers DST in Week 17. Fantasy owners should start them in all leagues and formats as a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: The 49ers DST had a hard time slowing down Marshawn Lynch in Week 16 against the Seahawks. Lynch not only become the first back to rush for over 100 yards against the unit this season, but he also become the first player to score a rushing touchdown against San Francisco in 2011. The 49ers were still able to hold Seattle to just 267 total yards of offense, with 126 of those coming on the ground. The unit did force one turnover in the 19-17 victory and were able to sack Tarvaris Jackson three times on the afternoon.
Analysis: The 49ers finally showed a tiny crack in their armor Saturday afternoon, but still did a great job slowing down Seattle. Take away Lynch's stats and the Seahawks barely mustered anything on offense, despite making three trips to the red zone. San Francisco proved to have one of the best DSTs in all of football this season and will now end the regular season next week in St. Louis. If you are one of the few owners who are in a league that runs through Week 17, feel free to start the 49ers DST against the Rams.
News: The 49ers defense will have a tough task in Week 16 against the Seahawks. Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch has rushed for 748 yards over the last seven games, with nine total touchdowns over that span. The Seahawks rank 22nd in the league in rushing and 23rd in passing. San Francisco sports the best run defense in the NFL, giving up fewer than 72 yards per contest, and 22nd against the pass. The 49ers have recorded 34 sacks thus far with 21 interceptions and three DST scores.
Analysis: The 49ers have yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season so as long as they can keep Lynch in check on Monday night, they should be in for a solid performance. That's easier said than done but San Francisco held him to 47 yards on 15 touches in Week 1, so it can be done. The 49ers have been one of the better defenses in Fantasy this season so continue to roll with their DST as a No. 1 option for Week 16.
News: The 49ers DST surrendered just three points on 389 total yards of offense in Week 15. The unit was able to hold Pittsburgh to just 84 yards on the ground in the 20-3 victory, while keeping the Steelers out of the end zone for the first time all season. San Francisco was also able to force three turnovers in the win, including three interceptions. The fourth came on a fumble recovery, which led to a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The 49ers also were also able to sack Ben Roethlisberger three times, with 2.5 of those coming by LB Aldon Smith.
Analysis: With Big Ben nursing a sore ankle, the 49ers went after the gunslinger and were able to get in his face the entire game. While the unit only managed three sacks, the constant pressure they provided forced Roethlisberger into making a ton of poor throws and had him rushing things all game long. The 49ers defense has still yet to allow a rushing touchdown through the first 14 games this year -- which is an NFL record -- and will look to extend to that streak next week in Seattle. However, Marshawn Lynch has been touchdown machine of late. Still, owners should have no qualms about considered the 49ers a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 16.
News: There is a chance Pittsburgh starts backup QB Charlie Batch on Monday night against San Francisco, instead of Ben Roethlisberger. With him you have to defend against two plays, the play they call in the huddle and the play they run if he doesnt like the regular play, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. He added that if backup Batch plays, it will be a quick pass offense. Charlies been around a while. No disrespect towards him, but Ben is an elite quarterback and hes more dangerous because he can move around and throw it downfield," DL Ray McDonald said. "You have to stay in your rush lanes with him, not let him get outside.
Analysis: Fantasy owners should keep tabs on this situation as the Steelers will likely rely on the run more with Batch at the helm. Opposing DSTs are averaging 8.54 Fantasy points per contest against Pittsburgh this season. Owners should consider the 49ers DST as a No. 1 option for Week 15.
News: The 49ers surrendered 21 points on 325 yards of total offense in Week 14 against the Cardinals. The unit was able to limit Arizona to just 55 yards rushing, but gave up some huge plays in the secondary. Backup QB John Skelton came on in relief of the injured Kevin Kolb and threw three touchdown passes, including a 60-yarder to Early Doucet. "They made plays on the ball and we didn't when it was in the air. As a secondary, we felt like it was really on our shoulders and we lost this football game collectively," Donte Whitner said. The unit did force three turnovers and racked up a pair of sacks in the 21-19 defeat.
Analysis: The 49ers really struggled to slow down the Cardinals on Sunday, especially in the passing game. The unit was burned for several deep plays and were only able to rack up two sacks against Arizona's suspect offensive line. Chalk it up as just one of those days for the 49ers, who will look to get back on track next week against the Steelers. While Pittsburgh can put up points in a hurry, owners should still consider the 49ers a No. 1 Fantasy DST next Monday night.
News: The 49ers defense will be looking to turnover the Cardinals in Week 14. San Francisco was able to force five turnovers in the team's meeting earlier this season, including three interceptions. The 49ers DST is ranked second in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 29 sacks, while forcing 28 turnovers and accounting for three touchdowns.
Analysis: The 49ers boast one of the top defenses in all of football and have yet to allow more than 27 points in a single game this year. The unit has also failed to allow a rushing touchdown, but could be without Patrick Willis on Sunday. However, San Francisco has ton of depth -- especially on defense -- which would certainly help fill the void left in Willis' absence. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his status moving forward. However, even if he doesn't play, owners can consider the 49ers a No. 1 Fantasy DST on Sunday.
News: The 49ers defense had one of their better performances of the season in Week 13 against the Rams. They held St. Louis to just 157 yards of total offense, including 31 on the ground, in the 26-0 win. It was their first shutout of the season. San Francisco was able to cause two turnovers in the contest, including an interception by DB Dashon Goldson. The 49ers held RB Steven Jackson to just 19 yards on 10 carries in the victory and sacked QB A.J. Feeley four times.
Analysis: The 49ers continue to be one of the better defenses in the league as they have yet to allow more than 27 points in a game this season. Their front-seven is their strength but with LB Patrick Willis going down with a hamstring injury on Sunday, it could affect the unit going forward. Keep an eye on his status going forward to see if he will miss any time. But with the Cardinals up next on the schedule, continue to roll with the 49ers as a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 14.
News: The 49ers will not be facing the most potent offense in the Rams in Week 13. St. Louis ranks 21st in the league in rushing and 26th in passing while San Francisco sports the best run defense in the NFL, limiting opponents to under 80 yards per game, and rank 21st against the pass. The 49ers have recorded 25 sacks thus far with 16 interceptions and seven DST touchdowns.
Analysis: The 49ers have not allowed a rushing touchdown in 11 straight games and continues to be one of the better options in Fantasy. While teams have been able to throw against them, their stout front-seven and ball-hawking secondary supplies owners with solid production on a weekly basis. The Rams have not scored more than 20 points since Week 8 and do not have many potent weapons on offense besides RB Steven Jackson. Consider the 49ers DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 13.
News: The San Francisco defense extended its streak of consecutive outings without allowing a rushing touchdown to 11 games in Week 12, but it wasnt easy. The 49ers stuffed Baltimore RB Ray Rice at the goal line during the second quarter to continue their run, however, dropped a 16-6 decision to the Ravens. San Francisco held Baltimore to just 92 total yards on the ground, but did not record a sack for the first time this season.
Analysis: The 49ers have utilized a strong blitz package this season to limit opposing running backs before they can make a move in the backfield. That has resulted in the NFLs top-ranked run defense, which has not permitted a 100-yard rusher this season. Rice finished with just 59 yards to lead the Ravens. But San Francisco did not create a turnover as its eight-game win streak was stopped. Fantasy owners should consider the 49ers a No. 1 Fantasy DST for its Week 13 matchup against lowly St. Louis.
News: The San Francisco defense has been stingy against the run in recent years. But the 49ers haven taken over the top spot in run defense (73.9 yards per game) this season with an impressive blitzing package. "They'll dog linebackers in the A gaps (between the center and the guard)," said Baltimore RG Marshal Yanda, whose team faces San Francisco in Week 12 on Thursday night. "It depends on if we're protecting the A gaps -- if they see something we're not protecting, they'll definitely attack that."
Analysis: The 49ers also lead the league with a plus-17 turnover margin this season after forcing four turnovers -- three of them interceptions -- during their win over Arizona in Week 11. San Francisco only allowed 1 of 9 third-down conversions to help extend its streak of consecutive outings without a 100-yard rusher to 32 games. The 49ers have not permitted a rushing touchdown this season, but face a tough opponent in Ravens RB Ray Rice, who has eight touchdowns. Still, San Francisco should be viewed as a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 12.
News: The San Francisco 49ers defense continued its impressive season-long streak of not allowing a rushing TD in Week 11, while holding the Cardinals to just 82 yards on the ground. It also forced five turnovers, as Cardinals QB John Skelton had three three picks, RB Beanie Wells lost a fumble and DB Patrick Peterson lost a fumble on a kick return.
Analysis: San Francisco was everywhere on defense, and Skelton had no idea how to handle them. 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was very critical of Skelton, stating before the game we could disguise coverages, but (Skeltons) not reading them anyway. Skelton's troubles made life easy for the 49ers, but in Week 12, they have to go to Baltimore on a short week and take on one of the NFL's top offenses. They should still be a starting DST, but don't expect the kind of gaudy Fantasy numbers they put up this week.
News: The 49ers come into Week 11 as one of the top Fantasy DSTs in the league, and face a Cardinals offense that has had it's share of ups and downs. Opposing DSTs are averaging 12.11 points per game when facing the Cardinals, good for sixth in the league, largely because the Cardinals have turned the ball over 15 times on the season.
Analysis: San Francisco's defense has been strong all season long, ranking third in standard scoring formats with a 13.9 points per game average, largely due to their ability to force turnovers and stop the run. This bodes well for their Week 11 matchup against Arizona, as the Cardinals have averaged 1.66 turnovers per game and have struggled running the ball at times this season. The 49ers are one of the top DST options for Week 11, and should be considered a must-start.
News: With Giants starting RB Ahmad Bradshaw sidelined with a foot injury, the San Francisco defense knew it would be able to push around another opponent on the ground. The 49ers, who entered Week 10 with the NFL's top-ranked run defense, held New York to 93 rushing yards in a 27-20 victory. San Francisco hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 31 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in the NFL since 2000. The 49ers also havent allowed a rushing touchdown in ten straight games, dating back to last season.
Analysis: With San Francisco effectively limited New York on the ground, DB Carlos Rogers was able to pick on Giants error-prone QB Eli Manning. Rogers notched two interceptions and now has picked off five passes this season, tying him for the league lead with Green Bay's Charles Woodson and New England's Kyle Arrington. The 49ers have did surrender 20 points for the first time since Week 4 against Philadelphia, but still managed its seventh straight win. Consider San Francisco a must-start DST against Arizona in Week 11.
News: The 49ers will be going up against a Giants offense in Week 10 that has had some success through the air this season. New York sports the sixth-best passing attack in the NFL, putting up nearly 283 yards per game, and rank 29th in rush offense. San Francisco ranks first in the league against the run but 22nd in pass defense. The 49ers have recorded 22 sacks thus far with 10 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns.
Analysis: The 49ers have been the third-best Fantasy DST so far this season as their front-seven has been able to bottle up the line of scrimmage. But the Giants showed last week that they can move the ball through the air seemingly at will, which could pose a problem for San Francisco. As long as they are able to put pressure on QB Eli Manning, they should have success on Sunday so consider the 49ers DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 10.
News: The 49ers DST did not have an outstanding game on Sunday of Week 9 in a win at Washington. That said, the unit did what it had to do in order to win the game, 19-11. The 49ers DST limited Washington's porous offense to 303 yards and most of that came late on a final desperation drive. The DST forced three turnovers as QB John Beck threw a pick and Roy Helu and Terrence Austin lost fumbles. The 49ers DST only got one sack on Beck on the afternoon.
Analysis: The most important things to take from the Week 9 win over the Redskins for the 49ers DST was limiting Washington to just 11 points and forcing three turnovers. The 49ers have forced at least three turnovers in five games this season and have been getting to the quarterback with ease. Heading into Week 10 against the Giants, Fantasy owners should continue to start the 49ers DST in all formats as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The 49ers DST has already been one of the best units around in the NFL this season heading into Week 9 at Washington. The Niners DST has recorded double digits in Fantasy points in all but one game this season and that was Week 2 against Dallas. The Niners have recorded nine sacks in the last two weeks and already have allowed 10 or fewer points to be scored on them in three contests.
Analysis: The San Francisco defense has been great this season and the Washington offense has been an absolute joke of late. The Redskins latest QB John Beck has been almost as big a disaster as was Rex Grossman, and now the offense is dealing with injuries to OL Trent Williams, RB Tim Hightower, WR Santana Moss and TE Chris Cooley. The Bills DST picked up nine sacks of the Redskins last week as well as two interceptions while pitching a shutout in a 23-0 victory. We can only imagine what the 49ers DST will do to the lowly 'Skins Week 9. Consider the San Francisco defense a must-start No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The 49ers allowed 10 points on 290 yards of total offense in Week 8 against the Browns. The unit was able to limit Cleveland to just 66 yards rushing didn't allow them to score their lone touchdown until mid-way through the fourth quarter. San Francisco was able to put pressure on Colt McCoy for most of the game, finishing with four sacks. The unit also forced a pair of turnovers, while keeping the Browns out of the red zone.
Analysis: The 49ers played very well on Sunday afternoon, putting pressure on the Browns offense all afternoon. In fact, San Francisco actually forced five fumbles but were only able to recover one of them in the victory. The 49ers have only surrendered 107 points this season and can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 9 against the Redskins.
News: The 49ers DST looks to have another favorable matchup in Week 8 against the Browns. Cleveland enters Sunday's contest ranked 25th in total offense, averaging 308.3 yards and 16.2 points per game. San Francisco's DST is ranked second in terms, of Fantasy points, and have racked up 17 sacks while forcing 14 turnovers thus far.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has played very well this season and now looks to have another favorable matchup in Week 8. Cleveland has struggled on offense this season, and managed only six points in their win against the Seahawks last Sunday. Meanwhile, San Francisco has only allowed 97 points this season, which ranks second overall. Owners should consider the 49ers a No. 1 Fantasy DST in Week 8 against the Browns.
News: The 49ers put a damper on one of the league's most prolific offenses, as they defeated the Lions, 25-19, in Week 6. The Niners' defense contained the Lions' offense to 310 total net yards, which is 70 yards fewer than their per-game average coming into the contest. They also sacked Lions QB Matthew Stafford five times, and one of those sacks resulted in a safety in the second quarter.
Analysis: The 49ers DST didn't force any turnovers, but they still helped Fantasy owners despite an unfavorable matchup in Week 6. They can be trusted as No. 1 DST in most weeks, but owners will need to find a replacement in Week 7, as the 49ers will get a bye.
News: The 49ers' DST enters Week 6 ranking second among all DSTs in standard Fantasy formats, but they could have one of their biggest challenges this week. They will face the Lions, who rank fourth in points per game and 10th in total offensive yardage per game. One of the 49ers' strengths has been their ability to force turnovers, as they have collected eight interceptions and recovered six fumbles. However, the Lions have given up the fewest turnovers in the leagues with four -- all interceptions.
Analysis: It looks like a strength-against-strength matchup in Week 6, but the Lions' potent offense may have the upper hand over the 49ers' defense. While the Niners have been sound defensively overall, they have been generous in allowing passing yardage, and Lions QB Matthew Stafford has been dangerous. The 49ers DST is still worth starting in most leagues this week, but unlike in most weeks, it may be worth checking the waiver wire to see if there is a better option available.
News: The 49ers defense did a solid job limiting the Buccaneers in Week 5. They held Tampa Bay to just 272 yards of total offense and caused three turnovers in the 48-3 win. San Francisco picked off QB Josh Freeman twice, including one that was returned 31 yards for a touchdown by DB Carlos Rogers. The 49ers also recorded three sacks in the victory.
Analysis: The 49ers had their way with the Buccaneers on Sunday and got their third score on defense on the year. The three points was a new season low for the unit, and should give them some confidence heading into Week 6 against the Lions. While San Francisco might not have an answer for WR Calvin Johnson, they should be able to hold their own against Detroit so consider the 49ers as no worse than a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST next week.
News: The 49ers defense has a favorable matchup in Week 5 against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay ranks 11th and 17th in the league in rushing and passing, respectively, while San Francisco sports the fourth-best rush defense and rank 27th against the pass. The 49ers have recorded nine sacks so far this season with six interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.
Analysis: The 49ers held the potent Eagles' offense to 23 points a week ago and should have a easier time on Sunday against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay's strength, running the ball, plays into their hands very well and their six interceptions on the year shows that they can handle the pass as well. Consider the 49ers DST as a No. 1 option for Week 5.
News: The 49ers couldn't stop the Eagles from running all over them in Week 4, but they made the stops when needed in a 24-23 comeback win. The 49ers held Philadelphia to three second half points. "We didn't make a lot of adjustments on defense. We just played better," coach Jim Harbaugh said. The Eagles racked up 513 yards, including a career-high 416 passing yards from QB Michael Vick. The 49ers forced three turnovers (one interception, two fumbles) and had two sacks.
Analysis: San Francisco came into Week 4 seventh in total (306.3 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (17.3 ppg), so it's not like they weren't showing early potential under first-year coordinator Vic Fangio. San Francisco is playing a lot of inspired football right now and the 49ers DST could be considered a low-end Fantasy option for Week 5 against the Bucs.
News: The 49ers defense has been a pleasant surprise through the first three weeks. San Francisco ranks seventh in total (306.3 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (17.3 ppg). Eagles coach Andy Reid knows his team can't overlook the 49ers defense heading into their Week 4 matchup. (Defensive coordinator) Vic (Fangio) is a phenomenal football coach," Reid said. "Hes got a good group there. That is a stout, athletic defense. All their ratings, all those statistics, all those are true. Sometimes you look at those and you go, These are skewed. Thats not how it is with this group.
Analysis: Reid is probably doing a little coach speak here not to give the 49ers any blackboard fodder. But the only big-time offense the 49ers have faced through three weeks has been the Cowboys, who dropped 27 points on them in Week 2. That's not to say that the 49ers defense doesn't have potential, but facing an explosive Eagles offense in Week 4 will be a nice challenge. The 49ers DST has been helped out early in the season by Ted Ginn, but consider them a low-end Fantasy option for Week 4. QB Michael Vick (hand) is expected to play Sunday and the 49ers could bee down safety Donte Whitner (hip).
News: The 49ers held the Bengals to just eight points in Week 3 at Cincinnati, giving them two points when they took an intentional safety late in the game. San Francisco allowed just 228 yards in the game and forced three turnovers, including the first two interceptions suffered by rookie QB Andy Dalton. They managed one sack.
Analysis: The Niners held the Bengals without a single touchdown in Cincinnati. San Francisco has held opponents below 20 points in two of their first three games and have proven to be a worthwhile defense in standard formats. They can get after the quarterback and force turnovers and make for a viable play when facing the right matchup. In Week 4, they'll be on the road in Philadelphia. Depending on whether or not QB Michael Vick (hand) is ready to play, that may or may not be a good matchup.
News: The 49ers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3. Through the first two weeks of the season, the Bengals rank 19th in the NFL in total offense, averaging 338 yards per game. They rank 13th in points scored, averaging 24.5 per contest. They have turned the ball over just twice, however, losing two fumbles.
Analysis: Andy Dalton is a rookie, but he has been able to take care of the ball so far this season. The Bengals did allow four sacks in Week 1 against the Browns and two in Week 2 against Denver, but do not expect this to be a game where the Niners can rack up points via turnovers. Fantasy owners should continue to view San Fran's DST as more of a No. 2 option at this point in the season.
News: Even though the 49ers knocked Cowboys QB Tony Romo for a quarter on Sunday, they couldn't hold on for the win. Dallas would beat San Francisco 27-24 in overtime in Week 2. The 49ers sacked Romo just once, but put enough pressure on him throughout the day to fracture one of his ribs. He still threw for 345 yards and two scores. Romo's backup Jon Kitna managed a score and threw two interceptions in the contest. The 49ers did hold the Cowboys to just 45 rushing yards.
Analysis: San Francisco forces some turnovers and gets pressure on the quarterback, but gave up big plays on Sunday. They face the Bengals in Week 3, but surprisingly their offense is clicking right now too. The 49ers may be able to frustrate the rookies on Cincinnati next week, but Fantasy owners should continue to view San Fran's DST as more of a No. 2 option at this point in the season.
News: San Francisco scored two touchdowns on special teams in Week 1, but the 49ers can't expect Ted Ginn to do that week after week. The key will be the defensive pressure San Fran gets on Dallas QB Tony Romo. I like their front seven, but now theyre going to clearly play a better offense (than Seattle)," NFL Films insider Greg Cosell said on Friday. "But keep one thing in mind the Cowboys also have three new starters on their offensive line. So, thats advantage 49ers. San Francisco recorded five sacks in Week 1.
Analysis: San Francisco has a tougher task in Week 2, but Romo made some key mistakes in Week 1 against the Jets. If the 49ers can get pressure on Romo again this week, San Francisco should be in the driver's seat. Fantasy owners don't want to jump on this bandwagon too soon though, so keep viewing the 49ers as a No. 2 DST option, with an upside, for this Sunday.
News: The 49ers offense didn't do too much on Sunday in Week 1 against the Seahawks, so the defense and special teams stepped up to the plate. San Francisco held Seattle to 219 total yards -- 155 passing and 64 rushing -- in their 33-17 win. The last two touchdowns of the game came on special teams as Ted Ginn scored on a kickoff and punt return with less than four minutes left in the game. San Francisco had five sacks on the day to go with two recovered fumbles and an interception.
Analysis: San Francisco got a team with a lot of new faces on offense in Week 1. That will change heading into Week 2 as the 49ers host the Cowboys. Dallas is coming off a tough loss and had a few turnovers in the game. If San Fran can put pressure on Tony Romo and force him to make mistakes, the 49ers will have a chance. But in terms of Fantasy value, owners should continue to view them as a No. 2 DST option with an upside.
News: San Francisco and Seattle split the two games they played in 2010, both team winning at home. The 49ers let then starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck throw for 170 yards and two touchdowns in the first contest. In the second meeting they let Hasselbeck throw for 285 yards, two scores, but picked him off four times. This year they get Tarvaris Jackson and the new-look Seattle offense. The Seahawks will likely rely on the run again, but they didn't surpass 100 yards on the ground in either contest in 2010.
Analysis: The 49ers get a team that is adjusting to some new pieces on the offense. Jackson and Sidney Rice played together in Minnesota, but that doesn't mean they will light things up in Seattle. San Francisco could have it's way with Seattle as they continue to adjust to each other. For now, Fantasy owners should view the 49ers as a second-tier defensive unit, with plenty of upside.
News: The 49ers made Mizzou's Aldon Smith their top pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, adding his pass-rush skills to a defense that sorely needs it. He's expected to play as an outside linebacker in the Niners' 3-4 scheme. Smith provides an athletic, long-limbed pass rusher who set Big 12 Conference freshman records for sacks and tackles for loss in 2009. He finished with 17 career sacks in his two college seasons for the Tigers. He will be given the opportunity to compete for a starting job right away. "We feel very good about him developing sooner than later," GM Trent Baalke said of Smith. "It was a chance to add a pressure player with prototype size to a team that needed some help."
Analysis: We'd be surprised to see him end up as a dominant pass rusher for San Fran this season, but he'll add depth and help their front seven out a little bit. The 49ers DST was a hot draft choice last summer but owners are shying away from them now. Draft them as a second unit in the deepest of leagues if you'd like, but the smart plan is to pluck them off waivers as a one-week replacement during the season.
News: New San Francisco defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the 49ers will employ a 3-4 defense next season, at least in name. "We personnel it as a 3-4 but well do a lot of things out of it that will look, to the visual eye, like a 4-3," he said Friday. "I like to say that were a 3-4-3, a 3-4 that does 4-3 things also." Fangio is part of a revamped coaching staff in San Francisco after Stanford's Jim Harbaugh was hired as head coach in January. The 49ers (6-10) allowed 346 points last season and finished second in the NFC West.
Analysis: Fangio said he sees a lot of similarities -- and differences -- between him and his mentor, Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers. "We worked together for 16 years," he said. "We have our differences -- like all two people would have. But I think basically a lot of the things he believes in, I believe in." Capers helped lead Green Bay to the Super Bowl title after finishing with the league's fifth-best rush defense (194.2 yards per game). San Francisco had a disappointing season in 2010, but will get LB Patrick Willis back from injury next year. Consider the unit a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST not worthy of a selection in 2011 drafts.
News: San Francisco end the year on a high note as they grounded Arizona's offense from the get go. The 49ers would hold the Cardinals to 78 rushing and 242 passing yards in Week 17. The pressure they put on rookie QB John Skelton even forced coach Ken Whisenhunt to make the move to second-year QB Richard Bartel. The 49ers would sack the quarterbacks six times and intercept each one of them once. They also forced two fumbles on the day. Tarell Brown would return his pick 62 yards and score the final touchdown of the game, capping off the 49ers 38-7 win.
Analysis: Arizona entered the season finale averaging 87 rushing yards per game, so San Francisco's defense was able to step up for interim coach Jim Tomsula. While they missed the playoffs, the team seemed to play together and enjoy themselves on the field. The 49ers played without Patrick Willis in the finale, so they'll have him back in 2011. But with a new regime coming into San Francisco, it is tough to say how this defensive unit will perform. The 49ers DST probably isn't worth picking on Draft Day based on all the uncertainty surrounding the team.
News: San Francisco has had a disappointing season, and it was capped off with the firing of Mike Singletary. Now with interim coach Jim Tomsula, the 49ers look ahead to Week 17 and the Cardinals. In the first meeting this season, Arizona beat San Fran 27-6. The Cardinals didn't do much offensively, but now have a new quarterback under center -- rookie John Skelton. DSTs average 14.4 Fantasy points per week against the Cardinals.
Analysis: San Fran will be without defensive leader Patrick Willis this week, which will be a huge loss for the 49ers. Without him and a few other players on defense, the 49ers DST might not be the best option for Week 17. They do get a rookie quarterback who hasn't thrown for more than 200 yards in a game and has just one touchdown pass. But he has just one interception in his three starts. For now, Fantasy owners should consider San Francisco's DST a low-end option for the season finale.
News: Mike Singletary was fired by the 49ers on Sunday night after two disappointing seasons, including a 5-10 showing this year for a franchise that expected to win the NFC West. The team made the announcement upon returning to the Bay Area late Sunday, several hours after San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention with a 25-17 loss at St. Louis. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was promoted to interim coach and will run the team in the season finale at home against Arizona. CBSSports.com NFL columnist Pete Prisco noted that Singletary was never ready for the head coaching gig as several ex-players found his gameplans to be too basic and without detail. The 49ers defense allowed 335 yards of total offense, including 60 on the ground to the Rams in Week 16 while giving up 23 of the 25 points allowed (a Rams safety came with the Niners defense on the bench).
Analysis: The 49ers defense gets a reprieve of sorts in Week 17 when the Cardinals come to town. Led by rookie QB John Skelton, the Arizona offense is efficient but far from dangerous. Then again, so is the Niners defense, and with their run defense struggling over the last two games, there's room for more trouble. You should be able to find a better DST for the regular-season finale.
News: The 49ers defense did a respectable job in Week 16 against the Rams, but their special teams provided them a score. WR Ted Ginn took a punt return 78 yards for a score in the second quarter for his fourth career touchdown return. San Francisco limited St. Louis to just 335 yards of total offense, including 60 on the ground, but were unable to come away with the win in the 25-17 defeat. LB Patrick Willis had the lone sack and turnover for the 49ers.
Analysis: The 49ers defense did a decent job on Sunday and held their opponent to fewer than 30 points for the first time in four games. The score on special teams didn't hurt either. San Francisco has some playmakers on defense but their offense have not provided them with much support. They will face off against the Cardinals in the season finale. When the division foes met earlier in the year, San Francisco held Arizona to just six points and 203 yards of total offense. Considering the matchup, view the 49ers DST as a low-end No.1/high-end No. 2 Fanatsy option for Week 17.
News: The 49ers visit St. Louis in Week 16, and Fantasy owners will be wondering which San Francisco DST shows up on Sunday. The unit has given up an average of almost 30 points in the last three games, but held the Rams to only 20 points in their first meeting this season.
Analysis: The 49ers looked awful last week when they were torched by the 49ers, but they've had 10 days to think about that game and fix things before this crucial NFC West matchup. Still, the way they've struggled in December, only a very brave Fantasy owner in a deeper league would dare risk using this DST unit in Week 16.
News: The 49ers defense had plenty of odds stacked against them facing the NFL's No. 2 offense heading into the Week 15 game against the Chargers, and they were not able to overcome many. The Chargers blew out the 'Niners 34-7, led by an explosive passing game on the arm of Philip Rivers and the hands of Vincent Jackson. The QB-WR combo connected on three touchdown passes on Thursday night, the first of which came on just the fourth play of the game. Jackson elevated over CB Nate Clements for a 58-yard score. San Diego went on to rack up 374 yards of offense and they converted on half of their third-down attempts (7 of 14). San Francisco had a glimmer of hope on special teams, when WR Ted Ginn Jr. opened the second half by returning the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. However, it was called back because of a facemask penalty away from the play.
Analysis: The Chargers over-matched the 49ers even without two of Rivers' top targets (Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd) playing in the game. San Fran. sported a banged up defense that got even thinner when DL Justin Smith was ejected from the game after shoving an official in the second quarter. ILBs Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes played the entire game with casts on their respective broken hands. In Week 16, they will have a seemingly easier task against the Rams, who have a below-average offense led by rookie QB Sam Bradford. Consider the hobbled 'Niners DST to be a marginal Fantasy option heading into the matchup.
News: After a solid outing last week against the run-of-the-mill Seahawks, the 49ers defense has a short turnaround to prepare for the Thursday night game against the Chargers in Week 15. San Diego sports the NFL's No. 2 offense, led by QB Philip Rivers -- who averages two touchdown passes per game. The running game isn't ranked as high (13th), but they have a trio of RBs who are all healthy for the first time all season. Mike Tolbert, Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles totaled more than 200 yards on the ground last week to pace the offense. The now-balanced attack presents quite the task for the solid San Francisco defense, who will likely have their two best players -- LBs Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes -- wearing casts in the game.
Analysis: The Chargers seem to out-match the 49ers across the board heading into the Thursday night game. The Chargers are fighting for position in the AFC West division and they are coming off of a shutout win over the division-leading Chiefs. A glimmer of hope for the 'Niners defense rests in an injury status. Rivers' top receiving option Antonio Gates is doubtful to play because of an ongoing foot issue. Still, we don't see San Fran limiting the explosive San Diego offense for long even without Gates on the field. Consider the 49ers DST to be a last-resort option in the deepest of leagues. Seek other Fantasy options if possible for Week 15.
News: The San Francisco 49ers demolished the Seattle Seahawks in the Week 14 game in California, 40-21. The 49ers DST was solid all game in limiting Seattle to 361 yards of offense. Most of the Seahawks' points came late in the game with it already out of reach. The highlight for the 49ers DST was a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown by Dashon Goldson in the third quarter. That score made it 37-7 San Francisco and was one of Matt Hasselbeck's four interceptions in the game. The 49ers DST forced five turnovers in total, adding a fumble recovery to the interceptions. San Francisco could sack Hasselbeck just once in the game.
Analysis: The interesting thing in this Week 14 game is that San Francisco managed to sack Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers four times in Week 13. Known as a mobile quarterback, Rodgers couldn't get out of the way where Hasselbeck could. Regardless, it was a much better effort for the 49ers DST but couldn't have been as good without the defensive touchdown. Fantasy owners can't expect that every week and shouldn't consider the Niners DST a viable option heading into Week 15 at San Diego. The Chargers are much better offensively than are the Seahawks.
News: The 49ers DST has recorded single-digit Fantasy point efforts in three of its last four games heading into Week 14 against Seattle. The unit struggled last week against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers but did manage to sack Rodgers four times. That could bode well against the Seahawks, which have allowed almost three sacks per game this year.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has had some solid games this season but have been nothing close to a No. 1 unit overall. The Seahawks have allowed opposing DSTs to record single digits in three of the last four games against them and that doesn't make it sound like the Niners have a good shot at bucking that trend. Consider them just a No. 2 Fantasy unit for Week 14.
News: San Francisco could not overcome the Green Bay passing attack on Sunday of Week 13 as the hometown Packers won 34-16. The 49ers DST allowed 410 yards of offense to Aaron Rodgers and company and did not force a single turnover in the game. San Francisco did manage to sack Rodgers four times in the game, however, with Ahmad Brooks getting two of them.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has had some good performances this season, but they have mostly come against lesser opponents. San Francisco plays Seattle in Week 14 and the Seahawks have given up plenty of Fantasy points to opposing DST units this year. Consider the 49ers DST a borderline usable unit.
News: The 49ers DST may have had a solid Monday night in Week 12 at Arizona. The Cardinals have been dismal this season, however, and the Green Bay Packers, the Niners' Week 13 opponents, have been much better. San Francisco must play against a team that is giving up just seven Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs.
Analysis: An opposing DST has only recorded double-digits in Fantasy points once in the last five games against the Packers. The 49ers DST has been an underwhelming unit all season and we don't see Week 13 as the week they turn things around. Find other options for Week 13.
News: The 49ers defense held the Cardinals to just six points on 203 yards of total offense in Week 12. Arizona could get anything going against the 49ers in the 27-6 win. San Francisco held Arizona to just 13 yards rushing on 11 carries and kept the Cardinals out of the end zone in the victory. The unit also was able to sack Derek Anderson once and force a pair of turnovers, which both led to points.
Analysis: The 49ers defense played very well on Monday night, but now will have to refocus and get ready to face the Packers in Week 13 at Green Bay. The Packers have a very explosive offense and can put up a ton of points in a hurray. Fantasy owners should consider the 49ers a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 13.
News: 49ers Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky couldn't say why his guys haven't been able to get many turnovers this season. "We stress stripping the ball during practice," he said. "We encourage our guys to pick off balls during practice. Sometimes they just don't go your way." The 49ers DST ranks 25th in terms of Fantasy points and has racked up 22 sacks and forced 12 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: The 49ers face the Cardinals in Week 12. Arizona has one of the worst offenses in the NFL, so San Francisco has a favorable matchup. Consider the 49ers DST perhaps a sleeper option in Week 12. They don't pressure the quarterback enough to be considered an upper-echelon DST, but they should be able to force some turnovers.
News: San Francisco contained Tampa Bay to 143 passing and 162 rushing yards in Week 11, but the offense would be shut out on their end. LB Patrick Willis would record the only two sacks of the game for the 49ers. They would not force a turnover in the game either. Some players on the defense were critical of their performance. I could have done some things better," DB Reggie Smith said. "The tackling was pretty poor across the board, but I think I did alright, but I still have a lot of stuff to work on. The 49ers would also lose DB Dashon Goldson with a leg contusion and ankle sprain in the game.
Analysis: San Francisco's defensive coordinator Greg Manusky had a game plan entering Week 11, but they didn't execute it too well. The 49ers face the Cardinals in Week 12. Arizona has one of the worst offenses in the NFL, so San Francisco has a favorable matchup. Consider the 49ers DST perhaps a sleeper option in Week 12. They don't pressure the quarterback enough to be considered an upper-echelon DST.
News: San Francisco defensive coordinator Greg Manusky is game planning for Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman in Week 11. He keeps his eyes up the field, he feels the pressure and he moves real well in the pocket," Manusky said. "Hes got some talented, young receivers that make yards after the catch, so weve got to limit that. Tampa Bay averages 327.9 yards of offense per contest, and the 49ers allow 330 yards. San Francisco has eight interceptions and 20 sacks on the year. They've bee allowing just over 100 yards rushing per game, but the Bucs have been running the ball as of late averaging 140.0 yards in the last four games. Undrafted rookie LeGarrette Blount has rushed for three touchdowns and 329 yards during that stretch, forcing Cadillac Williams into mostly pass-blocking duties. The veteran back, though, proved he can still contribute with the ball, running for 62 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown last Sunday.
Analysis: San Francisco's defense will have to step up if the 49ers want to keep on winning. Giving up 22 points per game won't get it done in the NFL. They've been improving as the year goes on and get a hot team in Tampa Bay coming to town in Week 11. Consider the 49ers DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against Tampa Bay.
News: The 49ers defense did a good job of limiting the Rams in Week 10. Although they allowed both a touchdown on the ground and through the air, San Francisco held St. Louis to just 332 yards of total offense in the 23-20 overtime win. The 49ers sacked rookie QB Sam Bradford three times in the game and also forced a fumble. Their defense came up big in overtime, holding St. Louis to a three-and-out on their first drive, allowing San Francisco to rally for the victory.
Analysis: The 49ers committed a ton of penalties in Week 10 but they came up big when needed and ended up coming away with the division win. While they did allow a couple of big plays on Sunday, the defense kept the game within reach for the offense the entire game. San Fransisco has steadily improved as the season has gone on and will face off against an up-and-coming Buccaneers team in Week 11. Consider the 49ers DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against Tampa Bay.
News: The 49ers defense has had it's ups and downs this season but will face off against a young Rams team in Week 10 that hasn't lit up the scoreboard offensively. St. Louis ranks 24th and 17th in the league in passing and rushing, respectively, and have scored over 20 points only twice this season. San Francisco enters Sunday's matchup ranked 20th in the NFL against the pass but 10th in run defense. "If you watch the tape, you know there's a lot of guys on this defense playing pretty well," right end Justin Smith said. "We've just had some breakdowns here and there, and you know, it's total team defense. We've all taken our turn in the bad plays. It's one thing if it's a physical problem, but 98 percent of our mistakes have been mental and assignment areas, and those things you can clean up and easily fix." The 49ers allowed 87 points in their first three games and 352 yards or more five times. San Francisco finished fourth in the NFL last year in fewest points allowed and gave up more than 357 yards in a game five times all season.
Analysis: Rams QB Sam Bradford will test a San Francisco secondary that struggled in key sequences throughout the first half of the season. But that secondary also has come on in recent weeks with rookie Taylor Mays settling in as the starting complement at safety to veteran Dashon Goldson. The 49ers defense allowed a season-low 179 yards and nine points to Oakland in a Week 6 victory and has been steadily improving in recent weeks. Coming off a bye week, they should be ready to go against the upstart Rams. The 49ers DST should be considered a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 10.
News: The 49ers sealed a 24-16 win against the Broncos in Week 8 with an interception of QB Kyle Orton on the final drive of the game. Denver didn't score in the first half and got their first touchdown halfway through the third quarter. The Broncos racked up 397 yards, but two fourth-quarter turnovers (interception and fumble) by Orton sealed the win for San Francisco. The 49ers sacked Orton four times.
Analysis: The 49ers have had a real up-and-down season on defense. There are weeks they look really good. Then there are weeks they look really bad. It's part of the reason why they are 2-6. It seems the 49ers DST is a unit that needs to be played in Fantasy with favorable matchups. The 49ers don't return to action until Week 10 against the Rams.
News: The 49ers head into Week 8 against the Broncos licking their wounds after giving up 303 passing yards in a Week 7 loss to the Panthers. The task doesn't get any easier in Week 8 as Denver is fourth overall in passing offense (290.1 ypg) behind QB Kyle Orton. The Broncos haven't had trouble moving the football in 2010, but their struggles have come scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game (21st).
Analysis: The 49ers are getting Denver at a bad time. The Broncos are coming off an embarrassing loss in Week 7 against the Raiders and will probably will be looking to make a statement in Week 8. The 49ers are 13th in total defense (3219 ypg), but are 24th in scoring defense (23.1 ppg). The 49ers DST is at best a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 8.
News: The 49ers defense got more than they expected from the Panthers offense in Week 7. Carolina entered the game dead last in total offense (236 ypg) and scoring offense (10.4 ppg). But with QB Matt Moore back at the helm, Carolina stunned San Francisco with a 23-20 win. Moore passed for 308 yards as Carolina put up 379 yards. Rookie WR David Gettis had the first two touchdowns of his career, including the game-tying score with 1:59 left. San Francisco took a 20-13 lead in the fourth on Ray McDonald's 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. The 49ers defense had one sack and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The 49ers DST seemed to have a tailor-made matchup heading into Week 7 as Carolina struggled all season to move the football. But as expected, Moore was able to jump start the offense and it took the 49ers by surprise. It's just another disappointing week in what is turning into an awful year for San Francisco. Consider the 49ers DST a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 8.
News: San Francisco's defense, which gave up a season-low 179 yards of offense in Week 6 against the Raiders, has the potential to have another big game in Week 7 against a Carolina team with quarterback issues. Coming out of the bye week, the Panthers will go back to Matt Moore after pulling Jimmy Clausen in a 23-6 loss to Chicago in Week 5. The rookie from Notre Dame had taken over when Moore was benched after struggling through the first two games. He replaced Clausen in the loss to the Bears and threw two interceptions on 10 pass attempts. Moore has thrown for 342 yards, six interceptions and two touchdowns while completing 42.4 percent of his passes for a 33.3 quarterback rating.
Analysis: The Panthers are dead last in total offense (236 ypg) and scoring offense (10.4 ppg). This just seems like too good of a matchup not to start the 49ers DST. San Francisco is coming off a big performance in Week 6 and now face an offense in turmoil. If you own the 49ers DST, then consider starting them in Fantasy Week 7.
News: The 49ers did a solid job against the Raiders in Week 6. They did not allow a touchdown and caused two turnovers in the 17-9 win. San Francisco's defense held QB Jason Campbell without a completion for two quarters and picked him off two times while sacking him twice. LBs Manny Lawson and Takep Spikes came up with both of the teams turnovers as the 49ers held Oakland to just 30 yards rushing and 69 yards through the air.
Analysis: The 49ers DST did their job in Week 6 and held the game close until the offense came to life in the second half. They stuffed the run and terrorized Campbell throughout the game to help San Francisco pick up their first win of the year. The 49ers have the skill players and the size to be a dominant option and should be a good play against the Panthers in Week 7. Continue to view their DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The 49ers defense did not have their best showing last week but faces a Raiders offense in Week 6 that it matches up well against. Oakland ranks 20th in the league against the pass while San Francisco has held has held opponents to 233.6 passing yards per game, good for 11th in the NFL. The Raiders will have their No. 2 choice of quarterback with Jason Campbell and will also have a banged up RB Darren McFadden for Sunday's game. Oakland ranks seventh in the league in rushing while San Francisco ranks 18th against the run.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has the skill players and the size to be a dominant option but their offense sometimes leaves them on the field for too long. The Raiders have a far from potent offense but the game will be determined in the trenches. As long as San Francisco can stop the run, they should be fine in the Battle of the Bay. The 49ers have struggled this season but their defense cannot be blamed for much of it. Continue to view their DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 6.
News: The 49ers DST had a sub-par effort in the 27-24 loss to the Eagles in Week 5. The defense gave up 352 yards, but did recover a fumble and sacked QB Kevin Kolb four times. Eagles RB LeSean McCoy had 138 total yards and a touchdown against the Niners, including a 29-yard TD run when he was untouched all the way to the end zone. Justin Smith recorder two of the sacks for San Francisco.
Analysis: The Eagles started off hot behind McCoy and Kolb and the game went back and forth for most of the 60 minutes. The special teams did well on punt coverage by containing the explosive DeSean Jackson to less than 12 yards a return. They can try to get back on track Week 6 against Oakland, who averages 339.2 yards per game (15th in the NFL).
News: The 49ers DST played their best game of the season in the Week 4 loss to the Falcons, intercepting Matt Ryan twice and scoring a touchdown on a blocked punt. The DST looks to keep the momentum going against Philadelphia in Week 5, the NFL's 8th ranked offense. The Eagles average 364 yards per game, but rely on big plays from WRs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin (six TDs between them). Coach Mike Singletary wants the defense to limit them as much as possible, like the Redskins did in Week 4 (four catches for 34 yards between them). "Both those receivers really can get downfield, and I think the most important thing for us is to get our hands on them early," Singletary said.
Analysis: The 49ers can also benefit from the Eagles injury issues. QB Michael Vick is likely to miss Week 5 because of a rib cartilage injury, Kevin Kolb will replace him. RB LeSean McCoy has a broken rib and his status is up in the air, although coach Andy Reid said he has a "pretty good chance" to play Week 5. Still, the Eagles have a potent offense. Consider the 49ers DST a solid no. 2 Fantasy option for their Week 5 game against Philadelphia.
News: The 49ers defense, which had fallen short of expectations all season, finally lived up to its potential Week 4 at Atlanta, limiting the Falcons to 16 points on 357 yards. It had three sacks and two interceptions after entering the game with only three sacks and two turnovers all season. It even got a touchdown when Dominique Zeigler blocked a punt and Taylor Mays caught the deflection in the end zone. The 49ers still managed to lose the game, 16-14.
Analysis: The 49ers DST was easily a top-five Fantasy unit coming into the season, but coming into this week, it had scored the second-fewest points in standard Head-to-Head scoring. This performance will certainly help its case, especially since it came against a perfectly competent Falcons offense. You might not be ready to trust it Week 5 against the Eagles, but you should get it back on your radar.
News: If the 49ers hope to rebound defensively Week 4 at Atlanta, they'll have to do so against hot QB Matt Ryan in the place he's most comfortable. Ryan, who threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns last week at New Orleans, giving him five touchdown passes over his last two games, is 14-1 with a 96.4 quarterback rating as a starter at home. The 49ers have given up the fourth-most Fantasy points to quarterbacks, allowing seven touchdown passes -- tied for most in the league. If that's not bad enough, the 49ers are also facing the second-ranked rushing attack in the league thanks in part to Jason Snelling's emergence behind Michael Turner.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has been arguably the most disappointing unit in Fantasy, allowing 87 points in three games -- tied with the Bills for worst in the NFL. And points aren't the only problem. The 49ers have forced just three sacks and two turnovers. If they couldn't take care of business against the Chiefs in Week 3, their chances of slowing down a hot Falcons offense this week are pretty slim. They still have some good players who could make their DST a viable option in favorable matchups down the road, but the 49ers DST is nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy option in Fantasy this week.
News: The 49ers gave up 31 points and 457 yards to the Chiefs in a Week 3 loss. They made one interception but no sacks.
Analysis: This matchup looked like a very favorable one for San Fran coming into Sunday, but the Chiefs blew them away in very non-K.C. style. Things won't get any easier for the 49ers in Week 4 when they head east to take on the Falcons, so Fantasy owners should seriously consider hitting the wire if the 49ers DST is their only option.
News: The 49ers play at Kansas City in Week 3 and look like a favorable Fantasy option, as the Chiefs rank third last in the NFL with just 254 1/2 yards of offense on average through two games. The 49ers have given up 56 points though, the second most in the league.
Analysis: San Francisco ranks fourth in total defense this season behind just the Titans, Ravens and Packers, so shouldn't have much trouble handling a Chiefs offense that features interception-happy QB Matt Cassel. Start the 49ers DST in all Fantasy formats with this tasty matchup for Week 3.
News: The 49ers defense played well in Week 2 against the Saints. San Francisco's defense held the Saints to just 287 yards of total offense, including just 50 yards rushing. They surrendered 25 points, but were put in tough spots all night because the offense and special teams turned the ball over a combined four times on Monday. The 49ers DST did not force any turnovers, but did record two sacks in the 25-22 loss.
Analysis: The 49ers defense played well for the most part on Monday, holding the Saints to under 300 yards of offense. They had to play most of the game with their backs to the goal line after a few of the turnovers gave the Saints great field position. However, there are still some things that need to be addressed. The 49ers defense has not forced a turnover over the first two weeks of the season and again, seemed to have a few breakdowns in the secondary. They will face a very talented Chiefs team in Week 3 at Kansas City. The Chiefs have a lot of weapons on offense and put up 312 yards of offense in Week 2 against the Browns. Consider the 49ers a low-end No. 1 DST heading into Week 3.
News: The 49ers defense will have it's hands full in their Week 2 matchup against the Saints. The unit allowed only 242 total net yards, but did allow the Seahawks to put 24 points up on the board while only forcing one turnover. San Francisco's defense allowed just 77 yards rushing limiting, Seattle to 3.3 yards a carry on the ground. The Saints put up 308 total yards of offense in Week 1 against the Vikings.
Analysis: The 49ers defense didn't look bad on Sunday, but the unit was far from outstanding. They had a tough time getting to Matt Hasselbeck and seemed to have a few breakdowns in the secondary. Those will need to be corrected before Monday nights showdown with the New Orleans. While the Saints offense didn't light up the scoreboard in Week 1, they still have plenty of fire power on offense. San Francisco should play better at home but will still have a tough time slowing down the Saints. Consider them a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 2.
News: The 49ers defense was just OK during Week 1. The unit allowed only 242 total net yards and was responsible for 24 of the 31 points the Seahawks scored. San Fransisco only forced one turnover and recorded one sack in the 31-6 loss. The lone turnover came on the first play of the game when Nate Clements picked off Matt Hasselbeck that led to San Fransisco's first three points. Most of the damage the Seahwaks did came in the air. San Francisco only allowed 77 yards rushing limiting Seattle to 3.3 yards a carry on the ground.
Analysis: The defense didn't look bad on Sunday, but they were far from outstanding. San Fransisco had a tough time getting to Hasselbeck and seemed to have a few breakdowns in the secondary. They were put into some tough spots because of turnovers, but were unable to stop the Seahawks from scoring TDs in the redzone. Still, the defense is the strength of this team and should only get better in the coming weeks if they can stay healthy. However, they have a tough task ahead of them in their Week 2 matchup against New Orleans. We recommend not starting the 49ers defense against the high-powered Saints' offense in Week 2.
News: The 49ers head to Seattle during Week 1 for a divisional matchup against the Seahawks. The 49ers defense ranked 15th in yards allowed per game last season(326.4 ypg), but were ranked sixth against the run (97 ypg). San Francisco held Seattle to 30 points in two games last season while forcing three turnovers. The Seahawks ranked just 21st in total offense last season and finished 25th in total points, averaging just 17.5 points per game. "This is one of the better defenses we'll play," Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said. "They're well designed, well coached, and they're very good against the run up front. They're big, strong, physical, and they play downhill. I think we voted S Dashon Goldson for the Pro Bowl last year, and the corners are really good. They play their scheme very well. It's really hard to exploit them. It's not easy to find a weakness." The 49ers defense is lead by veterans Patrick Willis, Nate Clements, Dashon Goldson, Justin Smith, Takeo Spikes and Aubrayo Franklin.
Analysis: The 49ers defense switched to 3-4 system in 2005 and gradually been building up their defense since. After four consecutive seasons of finishing 24th or lower in total defense, the 49ers have finished 13th and 15th the past two seasons and seem ready to continue to climb up that list. The Seahawks are not suppose to be a high-powered offense team this season and with San Francisco's ability to control the clock with their running game, the 49ers defense shouldnt have to spend too much time on the field. We like them as a solid No.1 DST option for Week 1.
News: For the past three seasons, the San Francisco 49ers defense has been all about potential. Now it's about production and results. The emerging unit that carried the team to an 8-8 record last season is trying to take it a step further this summer, and it appears the best is yet to come. The San Francisco defense, with established veteran starters at every position and quality young depth behind them, has allowed just 214 yards per game. The 49ers rank fourth in the league in total defense and are second in passing defense. Even fourth-year defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, never one for hyperbole, admits that he's feeling pretty good about his unit heading into Saturday's exhibition game against the cross-bay rival Oakland Raiders. "We've really changed up our whole scheme," LB Takeo Spikes said. "When I first got here, teams didn't have to worry about having a blitz pickup until third down. Now you never know when it may be coming. We can go three straight downs of blitzes. We've got the guys and schemes to do it. (Opponents) are going to have to play it honest and be aware of who's coming at all times. That's the beauty of the 3-4 system."
Analysis: Since switching to a 3-4 system in 2005, the 49ers have been gradually building their defense to the point they now feel it's ready to push the team back into the playoffs for the first time since 2002. "I feel comfortable that these guys know exactly what I want now," Manusky said. "They understand the system. Now we're just getting into the details of the way offenses are going to attack and how we should attack them." After four consecutive years of finishing 24th or lower in the NFL in total defense, the 49ers have ranked 13th and 15th the past two seasons and are poised for a climb this year. The talent is there to make it happen. Five defensive starters have been to the Pro Bowl at some point in their careers. Fantasy owners have also taken notice of the San Francisco defense as the 49ers DST has been the seventh most drafted unit in CBSSports.com leagues. The 49ers DST is a solid No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The 49ers DST didn't get much help in the NFL Draft, but the addition of safety Taylor Mays should help. Mays was drafted in Round 2, and the 49ers also drafted LB Navorro Bowman in Round 3 and CB Phillip Adams in Round 7.
Analysis: Mays should help the 49ers secondary, but Bowman and Adams are expected to play in reserve roles. The 49ers DST is still going to be led by Patrick Willis, Dashon Goldson, Justin Smith, Nate Clements, Takeo Spikes and Aubrayo Franklin on defense and Ted Ginn Jr. on special teams, and we like the 49ers DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: 49ers All-Pro LB Patrick Willis has undergone surgery on his right knee to remove an inflamed fluid sac that kept him out of this year's Pro Bowl. The 49ers said the surgery, considered minor and done about a week ago, isn't expected to sideline Willis for long. The team will adjust his offseason conditioning and regimen as he rehabilitates.
Analysis: Good news for the 49ers DST, which is considered a No. 1 option this season because of talents like Willis. Expect them to be drafted late in all leagues.
News: The 49ers placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin on Tuesday and hope to lock him up with a long-term contract. Franklin will be allowed to negotiate with other teams when he becomes a free agent next month, but San Francisco can match any offer or receive two first-round picks as compensation if they opt not to match. Franklin is guaranteed just more than $7 million next season with the tag, but the Niners want to sign him to a longer contract. "Aubrayo has proven to be a valuable contributor to our defense and we are looking forward to having him on our team going forward," GM Scot McCloughan said. "Although a contract extension has not been completed at this time, we will continue to have discussions with Aubrayo and his agent."
Analysis: Franklin is a big part of the 49ers' run defense, and without him they'd certainly take a step back. Their defense took some steps forward in 2009 and is considered a Top-12 unit in 2010, so expect to see them get drafted late in all leagues.
News: In their 28-6 win over the Rams in Week 17, the 49ers defense racked up eight sacks, which is pretty incredible. The team held Steven Jackson to 63 rush yards and held two Rams quarterbacks to 80 yards combined.
Analysis: The 49ers clearly outclassed the Rams and have set the table to be considered a sleeper Fantasy DST heading into 2010. Definitely consider them with a late-round pick in drafts this summer.
News: The Niners defense had a field day against an inept Detroit offense on Sunday in a 20-6 win. Lions QB Drew Stanton threw three interceptions in the game and the Niners defense forced and recovered three fumbles. Stanton was also sacked twice in the game. On the ground, the Lions were limited to 114 rushing yards on 31 attempts. Through the air, the Lions picked up 181 yards on 18 for 33 passing.
Analysis: The 49ers defense had a great matchup Week 16 with Stanton starting for the Lions. Things could get even easier Week 17 against an equally inept St. Louis offense that San Francisco shut out back in Week 4. The 49ers DST should be active across the board for Week 17.
News: The San Francisco 49ers could not stop the Philadelphia Eagles from clinching a playoff spot on Sunday of Week 15. The Niners DST gave up 422 yards to Donovan McNabb and company in the 27-13 Eagles win. The 49ers DST was able to intercept McNabb twice in the game but not one defensive player could get a hand on him for a sack.
Analysis: With the Niners forcing just two turnovers on the picks, it wasn't a very productive game for the 49ers DST. San Francisco forced seven turnovers on Monday night against the Cardinals last week but was not even close to having that kind of impact against the Eagles. The 49ers DST has never really been a must-start Fantasy option and if you used them this week you were disappointed. That said, they could be great in Week 16 against the Detroit Lions. With that matchup, continue to think of them as a No. 2 Fantasy DST unit.
News: The San Francisco 49ers played terrifically well on Monday night at home against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14. The 49ers DST absolutely dominated the game and allowed just 245 yards to the usual high-scoring Arizona offense. The Niners won the game 24-9 and all 24 points were scored off turnovers in the game. That is because San Francisco forced a total of seven turnovers. The 49ers picked Kurt Warner off twice in the game and Warner also lost a fumble. In fact, Warner's was just one of five fumbles lost in the game and the Cardinals actually fumbled twice more but recovered. To add insult to injury, the 49ers also sacked Warner four times, once by Patrick Willis and three times by Ahmad Brooks, and blocked an extra-point attempt by Neil Rackers.
Analysis: To recap, San Francisco forced seven turnovers, picked up four sacks, blocked a kick and limited both points and yards on Monday night to win the game handily. The only thing missing was a defensive touchdown and a safety. If you started the Niners DST Week 14 you ended up very happy to say the least. The 49ers play at Philadelphia in Week 15. The Eagles pose a stiffer test but after this kind of performance you don't have to be ashamed to use the Niners DST in any format.
News: The 49ers may have lost to the hosting Seahawks in Week 13, but not through any fault of the defense. The 49ers defense allowed only 292 yards, recording five sacks and recovering a fumble. The Seahawks still managed 20 points, though.
Analysis: The 49ers DST started off hot but had slowed down in recent weeks, becoming a risky Fantasy option. With 11 sacks in its last two games, though, it's worth using again. Too bad it has a tough matchup Week 14 against the Cardinals.
News: The 49ers DST had a terrific game on Sunday in a 20-3 Week 12 win over the Jaguars. The defense caused two fumbles in the game and was able to sack QB David Garrard five times. Garrard had a good day through the air however, throwing for 307 yards. On the ground, the Jaguars were limited to 96 yards on 19 attempts.
Analysis: The Niners defense came up big on Sunday, especially in the red zone as the Jags managed to score only three points. It was a far better showing than in Week 11 when the secondary was torched by QB Aaron Rodgers. The 49ers take on Seattle Week 13 on the road. In Week 2, the Niners held the Seahawks to just 10 points. Think of the 49ers DST as an interesting low-end sleeper for that game.
News: The 49ers DST allowed 30 points and 484 yards to the Packers in a Week 11 loss, with Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers accounting for 357 of those yards. San Francisco tallied two sacks, but failed to force a turnover.
Analysis: After picking off Jay Cutler five times in Week 10, the 49ers DST came back to earth with a bump in Week 11 against a Packers team that can rack up the yardage. In Week 12, San Francisco will host the Jaguars, but the 49ers unit will not be worth using except in deeper leagues that use two DSTs.
News: The 49ers DST was able to intercept Bears QB Jay Cutler five times on Thursday in a 10-6 win. Mark Roman, Dashon Goldson, Aubrayo Franklin, Michael Lewis and Tarell Brown were all able to come up with takeaways. However, the team failed to sack Cutler and allowed him to throw for a total of 307 yards. On the ground, the Bears mustered only 43 yards.
Analysis: The 49ers defense had been getting lit up in recent weeks but was able to bounce back in a big way on Thursday against a decent Bears offense. The Niners take on another pretty good offense in Week 11 at Green Bay and should be considered a low-end option for the game.
News: The 49ers defense and special teams haven't been great lately as opponents have beaten up San Francisco lately. The 49ers have lost four straight games and allowed over 24 points in three of the four (18 to the Colts, believe it or not). The Bears limp into the Thursday night matchup losers of three of their last four and struggling to run the ball but have a rejuvenated passing game thanks to Jay Cutler under center. Despite Cutler's nice totals on the season, the Bears have topped 21 points in just half of their games and only once on the road. Cutler has tossed seven touchdowns vs. 10 interceptions on the road thus far with at least one interception in every road game and two in three of the four.
Analysis: If you're looking for a decent DST option for Week 10, the 49ers are it. If you're using the waiver wire for DST help from week to week, do the legwork to ensure that you get the Niners.
News: The 49ers had a forgettable performance on Sunday in a Week 9 34-27 loss to the Titans. The defense allowed 27 points in the game, limiting QB Vince Young to only 172 yards passing. However, they failed to intercept one of his passes and sacked him only once. Chris Johnson torched the Niners on the ground, leading a rushing attack that mustered 152 yards and three TDs.
Analysis: The Niners managed to sack Peyton Manning three times in Week 8 against the Colts but only got to Young once in Week 9. The Titans offense is not too impressive, making the 49ers performance even more disappointing. Think of the 49ers DST as a No. 2 Fantasy unit for Week 10 against the Bears.
News: Colts QB Peyton Manning had been sacked twice all season coming into Sunday. The 49ers got him three times. The 49ers DST also had two forced fumbles in an 18-14 loss. Brandon Jones had two punt returns for 6 yards and Nate Clements had four punt returns for 31.2 yards. Michael Robinson had five kickoff returns for 99 yards.
Analysis: The 49ers DST should have a good matchup in Week 9 against the Titans. Consider the 49ers DST a low-end No. 1 option. The one thing to monitor is Clements had a bruised right shoulder and left the game against the Colts.
News: The 49ers DST totaled two sacks and a forced fumble at Houston in Week 7 but couldn't slow down Steve Slaton (89 total yards, two TDs) or Owen Daniels (123 yards, TD). They did do a nice job limiting Andre Johnson to just two catches, though.
Analysis: The 49ers DST will have its hands full in Week 8 with the Colts at Indy, so keep them off of Fantasy rosters for that horrid matchup.
News: After consulting team doctors and trainers, 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has decided to sit SS Michael Lewis this week against the Texans. Lewis has suffered three concussions since August. Mark Roman will start at strong safety and have the task of corralling Texans TE Owen Daniels.
Analysis: The 49ers will actually be fairly thin at safety because FS Reggie Smith will also miss the game. This won't bode well for the unit's defense against a very good Texans passing offense. Consider other options before starting the 49ers DST in Week 7.
News: The 49ers, coming off a huge defensive performance against the Rams in Week 4, came crashing back down to earth Week 5 against the Falcons, allowing 45 points on 477 yards. They finished with one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: That's what happens when the 49ers DST faces a real offense. In fairness, it had faced a few respectable offenses before Week 5 and did just fine against them, but this performance against the Falcons shows it's still not the type of unit you can trust every week in Fantasy. The 49ers have a bye in Week 6 before visiting the Texans in Week 7, but their DST is looking like a No. 2 Fantasy unit for that matchup.
News: The 49ers are playing some of their best defensive football of the past decade, and it's just about the entire unit that's doing it. The team is getting contributions from every area on a defense that has climbed to No. 6 this week in the NFL rankings and been largely responsible for a 3-1 start that has the first-place 49ers in early command of the NFC West. San Francisco recorded its first shutout in 119 games with last week's 35-0 rout of the St. Louis Rams, the latest testament to how well the unit is grasping defensive coordinator Greg Manusky's 3-4 scheme."After you've been around a system for a while, you know exactly what to expect from your other guys and what to expect from me calling the plays," Manusky said Thursday. "That is a comfort level for everybody. They understand where everybody's supposed to fit, where everybody's supposed to be, and they're flying around doing good things and playing hard, playing physical and playing fast."
Analysis: San Francisco's defense scored as many points as its offense last week as linebacker Patrick Willis returned an interception for a touchdown and defensive lineman Ray McDonald scored after recovering a fumble. Those kinds of big plays are becoming typical for a unit that ranks sixth or higher in the NFL in eight statistical categories and is second in the league in fewest points allowed per game. "You can definitely tell we're on track," free safety Dashon Goldson said. "It's all coming together because we believe in this defense and we love to play together. We're all playing for one another and we know what we can do as a unit. So now it's all about getting it done." Think of the 49ers DST as a viable Fantasy option Week 5 against Atlanta.
News: The 49ers (3-1) scored in every way during a 35-0 win against the Rams in Week 4 to take command of the NFC West after already beating reigning division champion Arizona and Seattle, recording their first shutout in 119 games since a 38-0 win at New Orleans on Jan. 6, 2002. "Any day you look up and see a goose egg it's great," linebacker Patrick Willis said. "We made a step today. People are going to say it's only St. Louis. That doesn't matter." San Francisco found a fortunate, wacky way to finally get on the board late in the first half. Rookie fifth-round draft pick Scott McKillop recovered a botched punt return by St. Louis in the end zone. McKillop capitalized when St. Louis' Danny Amendola let Andy Lee's punt go and teammate Quincy Butler tried to pick up the ball but couldn't gain control. The 49ers swarmed and McKillop came up with the ball at the bottom of the pile. Willis then added a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter and Ray McDonald fell on a fumble for a score in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: San Francisco scored touchdowns via special teams, offense and defense for the first time since Nov. 10, 1997, in a 24-12 win at Philadelphia. This also marked the 49ers' largest margin of victory since a 50-14 win over Arizona on Dec. 7, 2003. "This is our house," head coach Mike Singletary quoted from his halftime message. "We want to set the tempo. We don't want any team coming in here and setting the tempo. I felt like they were taking a fight to us." The 49ers defense held St. Louis to 177 yards, including 82 passing. They also came away with five sacks. The 49ers DST put up some serious Fantasy points in Week 4. The 49ers DST has emerged as a reliable Fantasy option thanks to the guidance of Singletary. Consider them a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 5 against the Falcons.
News: The 49ers DST registered a touchdown on a blocked field goal-return and added two sacks and an interception at Minnesota in Week 3. They also held Adrian Peterson to 85 rush yards on 19 carries, but yielded just over 300 yards and two touchdowns to Brett Favre, including the game-winner with 0:02 left.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has been impressive thus far and will host a terrible Rams offense in Week 4. Consider the Niners a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for next week's action.
News: The 49ers defense, which limited the explosive Cardinals offense to 299 yards in Week 1, had an equally impressive performance Week 2 against the Seahawks, allowing 10 points on 283 yards. Perhaps even more impressive, the 49ers did it with only one sack and one interception.
Analysis: The 49ers DST came up big late last year after Mike Singletary took over, and it's looking like one of the more underrated units in the league this year. It has some sleeper appeal at Minnesota in Week 3, but it's still an unproven defense taking on Adrian Peterson.
News: The 49ers defense had an impressive performance at Arizona in the opener, shutting down one of the league's best offenses last year. The 49ers allowed 16 points on 299 yards, recording three sacks and two interceptions.
Analysis: The 49ers DST thrived after the switch to coach Mike Singletary last year, and that momentum carried over into this season. They could be a sleeper unit this year, but they have a tough matchup Week 2 against the Seahawks.
News: Through the 49ers' first two exhibition games, the club has yet to earn a sack. The pass rush is an area of concern for the team, so much that coach Mike Singletary hired a former teammate of his, Al Harris, to serve on his staff as pass-rush specialist. The only sack the 49ers have recorded came Saturday night when Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell tripped over the feet of an offensive lineman and fell down. Manny Lawson touched Russell while he was on the ground.
Analysis: San Francisco finished tied for 16th in the NFL with 30 sacks last season. Hopefully pass-rush specialist AL Harris can help them improve because thus far in the preseason it seems they are headed into even worse depths this year. Consider the 49ers DST just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: On Thursday, the Niners waived injured fullback Zak Keasey, who broke his arm in the exhibition game with the Broncos Saturday. San Francisco also signed cornerback Eric Green to a one-year contract.
Analysis: Green spent the last four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He signed with the Miami Dolphins as an unrestricted free agent on March 12 this year then was released Wednesday. In 51 NFL games, he has 146 career tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 31 pass deflections. Green will give San Francisco added depth at cornerback, but he is not expected to start with Dre' Bly and Nate Clements on the roster. His signing doesn't increase the 49ers DST value, which remains at best as a No. 2 Fantasy option. Green also has minimal Fantasy appeal in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: The Press Democrat reports 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said star LB Patrick Willis can be even better this year. Said Manusky, "I think from the classroom stuff, that's how he can improve: Start calling out plays of what he feels is going to be coming."
Analysis: If Willis can get better that would be a scary thought. He's already the top LB in IDP leagues, and his play makes the 49ers DST a quality option in most leagues. Hopefully what Manusky said will come true, and Willis will take his game to a new level.
News: San Francisco cornerback Nate Clements will miss the 49ers' minicamp this weekend with a case of pneumonia. The 49ers' $80 million cornerback missed organized team activities on Monday and Tuesday with the illness, and he won't be re-evaluated until next week. San Francisco lost fellow starting cornerback Walt Harris to a knee injury last month, and a knee injury also has kept veteran Shawntae Spencer out of the Niners' offseason workouts. Newcomer Dre' Bly and Tarell Brown lined up with the first-team defense for Tuesday's practice, with kick returner Allen Rossum helping out.
Analysis: Clements should be fine, but the secondary took a hit from Harris' injury as he was considered a reliable corner who wouldn't always give up big plays. Now defenses will target Bly, Brown and/or Spencer and try to score on them rather than big-play cornerback Nate Clements. The Niners made minimal changes on defense, with their biggest move being the retaining of Mike Singletary as the team's head coach. His drive and spirit should constantly motivate his defense to perform well. Consider the 49ers DST a deep sleeper in deeper leagues this year.
News:Dre' Bly didn't spend much time out of the NFL, and the San Francisco 49ers spent even less time without a veteran starting cornerback. Bly signed a one-year deal Thursday with the 49ers, who moved quickly to fill the vacancy created by Walt Harris' knee injury with perhaps the biggest name among defensive backs still available on the free-agent market. The Denver Broncos released Bly in a salary dump in February after he spent two of his 10 NFL seasons with the club, starting all 32 games and intercepting seven passes. Bly was chosen for two Pro Bowls during his four years with the Detroit Lions, and he won a title during his first four pro seasons with the St. Louis Rams.
Analysis: Bly still has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues as a reserve and could be worth drafting with a late-round pick. He should do well replacing Harris, and the 49ers DST remains a No. 2 Fantasy option with upside.
News: San Francisco cornerback Walt Harris could miss the upcoming season after tearing a ligament in his right knee, dealing an early blow to the 49ers' hopes of a return to playoff contention. Harris, a 13-year pro entering his fourth year with the 49ers, was injured during Tuesday's practice in a collision with receiver Dominique Zeigler. Although Harris had to be helped off the field to sit on a cart, the team initially thought the injury wasn't major before tests revealed the serious problem. The 34-year-old Harris will need surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, which is at least partially torn. Such operations typically require several months of rehabilitation. Tarell Brown probably will take Harris' place atop the 49ers' depth chart opposite fellow cornerback Nate Clements. Shawntae Spencer, a longtime starter at cornerback for San Francisco, still hasn't returned to practice after missing 14 games last season with a knee ligament injury.
Analysis: The 49ers DST takes a decent hit from this as Harris was considered a reliable corner who wouldn't always give up big plays. Now defenses will target Brown and/or Spencer and try to score on them rather than big-play cornerback Nate Clements. The Niners made minimal changes on defense, with their biggest move being the retaining of Mike Singletary as the team's head coach. His drive and spirit should constantly motivate his defense to perform well. Consider the 49ers DST a deep sleeper in deeper leagues this year.
News: Following the 49ers 27-24 win over the Redskins in Week 17, the team announced that Mike Singletary would remain the head coach of the club, signing a four-year deal. Singletary changed the culture of the team when given the chance as an interim coach earlier this season and is a hard-nosed, defensive-minded, bottom-line type of boss. "We know he's the right guy," LB Patrick Willis told the official team web site on Sunday. "We enjoy playing for coach Singletary. He brings the best out of us as we bring out the best in him. It's a great chemistry. We know what to expect and we believe in him."
Analysis: Expect some significant change in San Francisco this offseason, but definitely count on the defense to be held to a higher standard with Singletary in charge. For the past couple of years, we've touted the Niners DST as a sleeper unit. It's too soon to tell if they will be in 2009, but with quality components in place like LB Patrick Willis, CB Nate Clements and DE/OLB Justin Smith, there is surely lots of potential.
News: San Francisco came down field and nailed a game-winning field goal against the Redskins in Week 17's 27-24 victory. The 49ers DST limited Washington to just 268 yards of offense but only forced one turnover. That turnover, a fumble by Clinton Portis, directly led to a touchdown for the Niners, however. San Francisco only managed one sack in the game.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has scored in double figures in Fantasy points six times this season but has been under five points four times and has been quite inconsistent. They've been mostly a No. 2 Fantasy DST all season and finish with 12 interceptions and 30 sacks with four defensive touchdowns. Treat them as a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into 2009.
News: The 49ers defense had a passable performance at lowly St. Louis in Week 16. It allowed 16 points on 343 yards, recording three sacks and one interception.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has played better lately, which probably had you expecting better numbers against the Rams. Still, it did well enough to start in Fantasy. Think of it as more of a No. 2 Fantasy unit, though, in Week 17 against the Redskins.
News: The 49ers DST held Miami to just 14 points and 248 yards in a Week 15 loss, but San Francisco failed to record a turnover and only made one sack.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has been playing very well lately and has held several teams below 20 points, but they just don't make enough turnovers to be a viable Fantasy option outside of the deepest of leagues in Week 16 at St. Louis.
News: The 49ers defense gave up only 14 points to the visiting Jets on 182 yards in Week 14. It recorded three sacks and interception.
Analysis: The 49ers DST allowed just three points to the Bills last week and appears extra motivated with Mike Singletary the new head coach. It looks like a decent Fantasy play Week 15 at Miami against an inconsistent Dolphins offense, but you could still probably do better in standard 10- or 12-team leagues.
News: The 49ers DST held Buffalo to just three points in Week 13, despite allowing 350 yards to the Bills. San Francisco also recorded a fumble recovery and three sacks.
Analysis: The weather certainly helped the 49ers in Week 13, along with Rian Lindell, who missed two other field goal attempts. Still, holding any team to just three points is a solid feat. Unfortunately, the Niners haven't had this kind of outing very often this season and are barely worth owning in Fantasy play. They host the Jets in Week 14.
News: In the 49ers' 35-22 loss at the Cowboys in Week 12, the DST unit totaled a sack and a fumble recovery while giving up 341 passing yards to Tony Romo. On the plus side, they were good against the run, limiting Marion Barber to just 59 rush yards.
Analysis: The Niners will play at the Bills in Week 13. Buffalo just totaled 54 points in Week 12 and will be at home looking to keep the momentum going. Consider other options before starting this DST for their next game.
News: The 49ers defense, which had gone without a sack in three of the last four games, picked up four in a Week 11 win over the visiting Rams. It allowed 16 points on 406 yards, finishing with two interceptions and a recovered fumble.
Analysis: The 49ers DST allowed 23 points for only the second time this season, which, combined with the sacks, suggests its solid performance had more to do with the state of the Rams offense than anything else. Don't bother with the 49ers DST in Fantasy except in the right matchups, which it clearly doesn't have Week 12 at Dallas.
News: The San Francisco defense managed to keep the 49ers in lead for most of the game Week 10 against the Cardinals, but a costly turnover late in the game gave Arizona great field position as they went on for a 29-24 win. The NFC West-leading Cardinals (6-3) never led until Karlos Dansby's 34-yard interception return set up Kurt Warner's 5-yard TD pass to Anquan Boldin with 4:16 to play. San Francisco forced no turnovers or sacks in the game as they allowed 374 yards, including 328 through the air. The only positive for the 49ers DST Week 10 was Allen Rossum returned the opening kickoff 104 yards for a score.
Analysis: The 49ers defense has allowed 29 or more points for six straight weeks and have allowed less than 23 points just once this season. No wonder the 49ers axed head coach Mike Nolan. Mike Singletary almost got his first win Week 10, but it will have to wait another week. The 49ers DST is not usually a very good Fantasy option, but they could be a sleeper pick heading into Week 11 against the Rams -- a team struggling for an offensive identity.
News: The 49ers defense gave up 34 points against the Seahawks in Week 8, but it only gave up 261 yards. It finished with a sack and also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: Obviously, the 49ers DST doesn't do enough on a week-to-week basis to start in Fantasy, and it didn't fare well Week 8 despite the decent matchup. You assuredly wouldn't want to start it at Arizona in Week 10. The team has a bye in Week 9.
News: The 49ers allowed 273 yards of total offense and 29 points in Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants. They did not force a turnover and did not sack QB Eli Manning once in the game.
Analysis: The Niners forced a couple of fumbles, but had one recovery overturned by a replay and the other was recovered by the Giants. The 49ers defense has not been particularly attractive in Fantasy for a while, but they do have a useful matchup in Week 8 at home against a bumbling Seahawks offense. Consider them possibly as a low-end bye week replacement.
News: San Francisco allowed the Eagles 383 total yards of offense in Week 6's 40-26 loss. The 49ers DST forced one Donovan McNabb interception as Takeo Spikes got the pick. That was the only turnover forced. The Niners could not sack McNabb. Their highlight came right before halftime as Donald Strickland scooped up a blocked field goal and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: The 49ers DST hasn't been much of a Fantasy force over the past few years and things aren't much different in 2008. The NFC East are not easy opponents and the Niners have to face the Giants in New York in Week 7. That makes them a DST to avoid.
News: The 49ers DST allowed 30 points and 377 yards to the Patriots in Week 5 but did record five sacks and two interceptions in a losing effort.
Analysis: The 49ers DST hasn't been much of a Fantasy force over the past few years and things aren't much different in 2008. They host the Eagles in Week 6 and they shouldn't be used in any Fantasy format for that matchup.
News: The 49ers DST had one interception, one fumble recovery and no sacks Sunday at New Orleans. Allen Rossum had four kickoff returns for 149 yards and Michael Robinson had one kickoff return for 7 yards. Patrick Willis recovered the fumble, and Takeo Spikes had the interception.
Analysis: The 49ers DST is not worth using most weeks and should be reserved in Week 5 against New England.
News: The 49ers held the Lions offense to just 240 yards and just 13 points in Week 3. They forced two turnovers and sacked the quarterback four times.
Analysis: This was a solid performance for the Niners defense and it came against a pretty decent offense. With Patrick Willis at the core of the defensive unit, this team should continue to improve as the season goes on. Consider them a decent bye week replacement when they face good matchups, but Week 4 at New Orleans does not qualify as that.
News: The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Seahawks in Week 2, 33-30, in overtime. The Niners won despite giving up a lot of points and 351 total yards of offense. That said, the 49ers DST still got you a good amount of Fantasy points as they intercepted two passes. The first came on Patrick Willis' 86-yard interception return for his first career touchdown. Walt Harris added a pick. The Niners also recorded one fumble recovery and one sack.
Analysis: With Willis on your defense, you are a decent unit. The Niners meet Detroit in Week 3 and although we expect them to give up yards and points again, you can count on a few interceptions as well. They are a low-end No. 1 option against the Lions.
News: The 49ers DST allowed 23 points to Arizona's offense in Week 1. The Niners didn't have a great defensive game as the Cardinals put up 285 yards of offense. They didn't force any fumbles. Parys Haralson recorded 2.5 sacks and Justin Smith got the other half a sack and that was it for getting to Kurt Warner. No 49er recorded an interception.
Analysis: San Francisco doesn't have a defense that is ranked in the Top 20 in CBSSports.com's Fantasy rankings and that makes them a less-than-attractive option. The team meets the Seahawks in Week 2 in Seattle. Seattle managed just 10 points against the Bills in Week 1 and has lost their top three wide receivers. While that raises the 49ers value next week, we still don't suggest picking them up or starting them.
News: The 49ers defense created one sack and one fumble recovery at Chicago in preseason play Thursday. That's it. The team had 30 points hung on them, 14 by Chicago's first-team offense and another seven on the last play of the game.
Analysis: Don't get so worried -- the Bears found themselves with great field position early thanks to a pair of long kickoff returns. The Niners gave up just 212 passing yards and 109 rush yards as a team. They remain a sleeper unit for 2008 thanks to the talent they have on defense, the addition of KR Allen Rossum (who left with a back injury) and their relatively easy divisional rivals. In leagues with 14-plus teams, they might be worth a late-round flier.
News: San Francisco DB Allen Rossum left Thursday's preseason game against the Bears with a lower back contusion after getting tackled on a kick return.
Analysis: Rossum is not a good IDP player but does add value to the Niners' special teams. San Francisco's DST would be affected if Rossum was forced to miss any time in the regular season. Check back to find out the extent of the injury.
News:Allen Rossum scored on a 67-yard punt return in the fourth quarter for the Niners in Saturday's preseason game against Green Bay.
Analysis: The addition of Rossum in the offseason could make the Niners slightly more appealing as they have a better threat to score on kick returns. The defense already is talented with big names from up front (DE Justin Smiley) to the middle (LB Patrick Willis) and the secondary (CB Nate Clements). Consider the Niners DST once again as a sleeper in 2008 Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in this summer's deeper drafts.
News: The San Francisco 49ers signed two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes Sunday night. Spikes will not only provide depth to an already talented LB corps, but he may also earn a starting linebacker job, likely on the inside.
Analysis: Spikes should help a nominal amount, but this defense already is talented with big names from up front (DE Justin Smiley) to the middle (LB Patrick Willis) and the secondary (CB Nate Clements). The club has also added KR Allen Rossum to help on returns, so this DST is looking up. Consider the Niners DST once again as a sleeper in 2008 Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in this summer's deeper drafts.
News: Asked recently which scheme -- 3-4 or 4-3 -- is San Francisco's base defense, head coach Mike Nolan said he couldn't choose. "To be honest with you, they're both right and wrong (because) there hasn't been a definition for (our defense)," Nolan said. "You could say it's a hybrid 3-4 defense. That would probably be the most accurate way to say it."
Analysis: The 49ers have been using new DE Justin Smith in a similar hybrid role, working as an end, a tackle and an outside linebacker. That's a big jump for Smith, who was always on the right side of the Bengals' line in years past. The club has also added KR Allen Rossum to help on returns, so this DST is looking up. Consider the Niners DST once again as a sleeper in 2008 Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in this summer's deeper drafts.
News: The 49ers signed free-agent defensive end Justin Smith on Saturday in a move they hope will bolster their pass rush. Smith, the No. 4 overall pick by Cincinnati in 2001, had 43 1/2 sacks in seven seasons with the Bengals and was one of the top pass rushers available on the free agent market this season. His deal is reportedly for six years and is worth $45 million, including $20 million in guarantees. The Niners were tied for 21st in the NFL last season with only 31 sacks. Bryant Young, who led the team with 6 1/2 sacks, retired after the season leaving a big void at end.
Analysis: Smith had at least five sacks in each of his first six seasons with the Bengals before recording only two last season. He has led the Bengals defensive line in tackles in each of the past six seasons. He'll be playing in the Niners' 3-4 scheme this year which might mean more production from other members of the team's defense. The club has also added KR Allen Rossum to help on returns, so the DST is looking up based on last year. Consider the Niners DST once again as a sleeper in 2008 Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in this summer's drafts.
News: Considered a sleeper option before the 2007 season, the 49ers DST mostly disappointed thanks to an underperforming secondary and a lack of a pass rush. In total, the Niners amassed 31 sacks, 27 fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions and scored just once on defense. The Niners ranked 22nd against the pass and the run, allowing 33 scores (24 through the air).
Analysis: Head coach Mike Nolan won't stand for such poor play from his defense, and chances are he'll work hard this offseason to accelerate the production of his 3-4 unit. Look for the Niners to improve their cornerback depth and find a disruptive 3-4 lineman to help aid LB Patrick Willis against opposing clubs. If they make some good moves, expect the Niners DST to once again be a sleeper in 2008 Fantasy play, worth a late-round pick in this summer's drafts.
News: The 49ers DST totaled one sack and one interception at Cleveland in Week 17.
Analysis: Entering 2007, the 49ers DST was considered a sleeper unit. Instead, they fell asleep. But with strong pieces in place like LB Patrick Willis and CB Nate Clements, they should re-develop into a surprise unit next season. Follow their offseason moves and expect to hear about them as a sleeper unit in 2008.
News: The 49ers DST had four sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery Sunday against Tampa Bay. Maurice Hicks had four kickoff returns for an 18.8-yard average, and Michael Lewis had four punt returns for 36 yards.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has minimal Fantasy value and should not be used in Week 17 at Cleveland.
News: The 49ers defense failed to record a sack Week 15 against the Bengals and it was the second straight game they didn't bring down the quarterback. San Francisco was also shutout Week 14 against the Vikings. The 49ers did hold Cincinnati to 13 points, but allowed 313 yards. They also didn't force a turnover.
Analysis: The 49ers have one of the worst defenses in the NFL, and despite limiting Cincy to 13 points, it doesn't help Fantasy owners that they recorded zero sacks and turnovers. They didn't even get a special teams score. The only positive notes this season have been the play of rookie Patrick Willis and DB Nate Clements. The 49ers DST is a less than desireable Fantasy option heading into Week 16 against the Bucs.
News: It was another bad outing for the 49ers defense Week 14 against the Vikings. San Francisco allowed 27 points and 280 yards in a losing effort. The only real bright spot is that they held Vikings rookie sensation Adrian Peterson to three yards on 14 carries. However, Chester Taylor rushed for 101 yards, including a 84-yard touchdown run. The 49ers got zero sacks and just one turnover -- a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The 49ers have one of the worst defenses in the NFL and it showed against the Vikings. The only positive notes this season have been the play of rookie Patrick Willis and DB Nate Clements. Don't look now but the 49ers face the Bengals Week 15. Don't start the 49ers DST.
News: The Niners allowed 31 points and 307 yards of offense in Week 13 at Carolina. They forced two turnovers and recorded two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Niners managed to find a way to turn the Panthers' lousy defense into a juggernaut. Fantasy owners would be crazy to think about starting the Niners in Fantasy play at this late juncture of the season against the Vikings, who have scored 40-plus points the last two weeks.
News:Kurt Warner had a big day that ended very badly for him and triumphantly for the embattled San Francisco 49ers. Warner was hit by Ronald Fields and fumbled in the Arizona end zone, and Tully Banta-Cain recovered for a touchdown and a wild 37-31 overtime victory over the Cardinals in Week 12. The 49ers defense was trumped for 552 total yards, including 456 passing yards by Warner. They did record four sacks and also picked off Warner twice.
Analysis: The 49ers had a kind of wacky week against the Cardinals. They allowed 31 points and 552 yards, but they scored a touchdown, recorded four sacks and forced two turnovers. The 49ers will face a much-maligned Carolina team in Week 13, but the 49ers DST is merely a desperation Fantasy option.
News: The 49ers took advantage of the visiting Rams' poor pass protection in Week 11, sacking QB Marc Bulger seven times. They also recovered a fumble. The Rams finished with 13 points on 207 yards. The 49ers special teams, meanwhile, finished with 87 yards.
Analysis: The 49ers have one of the least impressive DSTs in Fantasy, but they benefited from facing a team with a depleted offensive line. The 49ers face too good an offense in Week 12 at Arizona to consider their DST for Fantasy use.
News: The 49ers allowed 24 points on 380 yards Week 10 at Seattle. Their defense had a sack, an interception and a recovered fumble while their special teams had 113 total return yards.
Analysis: The 49ers have one of the least impressive DSTs in Fantasy, but they have a decent matchup Week 11 against the Rams. The Rams will probably put up a few points, but they'll also surrender a handful of sacks with all their injuries along the offensive line. Depending on your league's scoring breaks down for sacks and points allowed, consider the 49ers DST a one-week sleeper for Week 11.
News: Seattle hosts San Francisco in an NFC West battle in Week 10 Sunday. Seattle's offense is ranked 13th in the NFL (10th in the passing game and 23rd on the ground).
Analysis: The Niners DST is ranked 20th in total defense (14th against the pass and 24th against the run). They are not a DST unit worth starting in most Fantasy formats in Week 10.
News: The 49ers allowed 20 points and 286 yards of offense in Week 9 at Atlanta. They had just one sack and an interception in a losing effort.
Analysis: The Niners had a decent matchup against a poor offense in Atlanta and they weren't exactly run over in the loss. Still, when the Niners face the Seahawks in Seattle in Week 10, we don't recommend using this defensive unit.
News: The Niners DST travels to face the 25th-ranked offense of the Atlanta Falcons Sunday in Week 9. The Falcons have allowed 25 sacks along with five interceptions.
Analysis: The Niners DST ranks 22nd in total defense this season, including 21st against the pass and the run. They are not worth starting outside of larger leagues, despite the favorable matchup.
News: The 49ers DST gave up 438 yards in Week 8, including 336 to QB Drew Brees, in San Francisco's 31-10 loss to the Saints. They did recover a fumble, but that's about it.
Analysis: The 49ers DST unit is pretty poor, but if there was ever a week to use them, Week 9 would be it, as they face an equally poor Falcons team.
News: The 49ers DST is ranked 17th in total defense, with an 11th-ranked passing defense and a 23rd-ranked rushing defense. San Francisco hosts the Saints in Week 8.
Analysis: The Saints rank 20th in total offense (11th in the air and 24th on the ground). They have only given up four sacks and Drew Brees is not throwing many interceptions anymore. Only consider starting the 49ers DST if you are in a large league and your starting unit is on a bye.
News: The 49ers allowed 279 yards and 33 points to the Giants in Week 7 at New York. They forced one turnover -- an interception -- and recorded a safety on a blocked punt. They also sacked QB Eli Manning once.
Analysis: The 49ers DST ranked 20th in total defense coming into the game and they aren't a unit that should be relied upon unless they face an overbearingly favorable matchup. In Week 8, the Niners will face the Saints.
News: The N.Y. Giants travel to San Francisco to face the 49ers DST in Week 7 on Sunday. The Giants currently rank sixth in total offense, including 10th through the air and 12th on the ground. The Giants have allowed seven sacks, with eight interceptions thrown.
Analysis: The 49ers DST ranks 20th in total defense (16th against the pass and 22nd against the run). The Niners have 11 sacks, but just three interceptions so far. Consider this Fantasy DST one to sit for this week's matchup.
News: The Colts, Lions and 49ers are all on a bye in Week 6.
Analysis: The Niners DST ranks 21st in the NFL in total defense, including 16th against the passing game and 23rd against the run. They will travel to New York to play the Giants in Week 7. You can do better from a Fantasy perspective than this unit.
News: The San Francisco 49ers DST held the Ravens TD-less in their Week 5 9-7 loss to Baltimore, but failed to record a sack or interception and allowed 315 yards.
Analysis: Any time a DST doesn't allow a touchdown, it's a good performance. However, being held sack-less and without an interception really hurts owners Fantasy-wise in leagues that reward those categories. The 49ers have a bye in Week 6, so be sure to hit the wire for a replacement. They return to action in Week 7 against the Giants and are not worth a start except in deeper leagues.
News: The Niners DST will host the eighth-ranked Ravens offense in Week 5. The Niners are 20th in total defense, including 11th against the pass and 25th against the run.
Analysis: The Niners DST has 11 sacks this season, which is above average, but the Ravens have only given up six sacks this season. Start the Niners DST in 14-team leagues only this week.
News: The San Francisco DST tallied one interception and two sacks while allowing 23 points and 371 net yards to the Seahawks in a 23-3 loss in Week 4.
Analysis: The 49ers DST allowed Matt Hasselbeck to throw all over them in Week 4, which is odd as their pass defense was pretty solid in the first three weeks of the season (they ranked 11th heading into Week 4). In Week 5, San Fran hosts Baltimore and could be a nice bye-week start in an emergency.
News: The San Francisco 49ers changed punt returners on Tuesday, cutting Brandon Williams and signing Michael Lewis, the former beer truck driver who rose to fame with the New Orleans Saints. "We are picking up a player who has been there and knows what it is supposed to look like," Everest said. "I am looking forward to Michael getting a fresh start on our team."
Analysis: The 49ers averaged just 6.4 yards on their punt returns in three games, and Williams made a key fumble to set up a touchdown by the St. Louis Rams in San Francisco's 17-16 victory last week. Williams, the 49ers' third-round pick in 2006, never was particularly impressive as the 49ers' designated punt returner, and the former Wisconsin star couldn't crack San Francisco's rotation of receivers. The 49ers DST is only worth a look as a bye-week replacement in most Fantasy leagues. The Niners host the Seahawks in Week 4.
News: The 49ers DST totaled two sacks and a forced fumble in a 37-16 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 3.
Analysis: The Niners DST unit remains a decent starting unit, but one that needed to sit this week. Start them when the Niners play vs. Seattle in Week 4.
News: Manny Lawson's injury didn't look serious at first. San Francisco's up-and-coming linebacker simply seemed to step awkwardly during practice, and he even pedaled a stationary bike afterward. The next morning, the 49ers learned Lawson will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee on a noncontact play. Just like that, San Francisco's promising defense was forced to figure out how to thrive without one of its most important parts. "I was really looking forward to doing big things this year for my team," said Lawson, who feared the worst after hearing a pop in his knee. "The hardest thing is just knowing I won't be able to be out there practicing and playing in games with the guys."
Analysis: Lawson, a starting outside linebacker in the 49ers' 3-4 defensive scheme, tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Wednesday's practice. The speedy 6-foot-5 linebacker plays the strong side, covering tight ends and rushing the passer with equal vigor. Coach Mike Nolan envisions him as a versatile defensive star who will be around the ball constantly -- but it won't happen until next year. Lawson was second on the team with 14 tackles while the Niners got off to a 2-0 start, showing clear improvement from his rookie year. San Francisco's defense has been largely responsible for the club's strong start, holding its opponents to 33 points in two games despite meager production from the Niners' offense. Lawson is a huge loss, but the 49ers are still nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy DST. Lawson should only be held onto in long-term IDP leagues.
News: 49ers LB Manny Lawson will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. Lawson, a starting outside linebacker in the 49ers' 3-4 defensive scheme, went down with the injury during Wednesday's practice. The injury didn't initially appear to be serious, and Lawson rode on a stationary bike for the rest of the team's workout. But tests determined Thursday that Lawson tore his ACL.
Analysis: Lawson is second on the team with 14 tackles, showing impressive improvement from his rookie year. He started 11 games last season after San Francisco chose him with the 22nd overall selection, making 65 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Lawson should not be owned in any Fantasy leagues. His loss will hurt the 49ers DST, but they are still a No. 2 option right now.
News: The 49ers DST had six sacks and recovered two fumbles Sunday against the Rams. They lost a fumble on a punt return by Brandon Williams, who had two returns for a 6.0-yard average. And Maurice Hicks had five kickoff returns for a 20.2-yard average.
Analysis: The 49ers DST has looked good so far in two weeks, but next week they get the Steelers and should not be used.
News: The San Francisco 49ers defense allowed 17 points and limited the Cardinals to 241 total net yards. The 49ers also racked up one sack and two interceptions.
Analysis: The 49ers had a nice night, but they are still considered a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 2 at St. Louis against QB Marc Bulger, RB Steven Jackson and WR Torry Holt.
News: Niners DT Joe Cohen was taken off on a cart with a sprained knee in Thursday's preseason game at San Diego. Other injuries for the 49ers were: LB Jay Moore (ankle), LB Manny Lawson (concussion), LB Parys Haralson (broken nose) and LB Brandon Moore (cut lip).
Analysis: The 49ers are worth calling a No. 1 DST, but they're better off as a top-end No. 2 option in deeper Fantasy leagues. They'll be drafted in the majority of leagues this summer.
News: According to The Sports Xchange, the 49ers plan to start two rookies in their season opener Monday, Sept. 10, against the Cardinals. First-round picks Patrick Willis, a linebacker, and right tackle Joe Staley won their respective competitions.
Analysis: Willis could be a good sleeper in IDP leagues this year, but he should still be drafted in the later rounds since he's just a rookie. The 49ers DST is considered a low-end No. 1 option going into the season. They are a solid No. 2.
News: The San Francisco 49ers rested two veteran defenders, DE Bryant Young and Pro Bowl CB Walt Harris, for Monday's preseason opener against the Broncos.
Analysis: Harris and Young will be just fine heading into the regular season. The 49ers are worth calling a No. 1 DST, but they're better off as a top-end No. 2 option in deeper Fantasy leagues. They'll be drafted in the majority of leagues this summer.
News: San Francisco 49ers nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin will miss the preseason after spraining his left knee Monday, a prognosis that had coach Mike Nolan feeling relieved. "It's not as bad as it could have been," Nolan said. "Missing training camp doesn't get me excited. ... That's a disappointment, but it's not that bad." Isaac Sopoaga and rookie Joe Cohen will get the first chance to replace Franklin, while Ronald Fields could move over from defensive end to help out. The 49ers have high hopes for Cohen, a 310-pound fourth-round pick who was a stalwart on Florida's defensive line.
Analysis: Franklin, the centerpiece of Nolan's 3-4 defense, left training camp on a cart during the morning practice, but an afternoon MRI exam revealed only a sprained medial collateral ligament. The 49ers expect Franklin, who left Baltimore to sign with San Francisco in the offseason, to be ready to play by early September. The 49ers are worth calling a No. 1 DST, but they're better off as a top-end No. 2 option in deeper Fantasy leagues. They'll be drafted in the majority of leagues this summer.
News: The 49ers signed top draft pick Patrick Willis to a five-year deal and had the linebacker practicing Sunday. Willis, whose deal has a maximum value of $16.7 million with $12 million in guaranteed money, is one of several key players the 49ers added during a busy offseason. "I'm a team player and I wanted nothing more than to be on time and be here for camp," said Willis, the 11th overall pick out of Mississippi. "(The deal) was done on time, I'm here for the start and it's a blessing to me. My job now is to come in here and give the 49ers and the organization and my teammates everything I've got, and I'm willing to do that."
Analysis: Willis should shore up the Niners' run defense and be a prime tackling machine for the club. Keeping in mind that San Fran also signed CB Nate Clements, SS Michael Lewis and LB Tully Banta-Cain, their 3-4 defense should be solid in 2007. They're worth calling a No. 1 DST, but they're better off as a top-end No. 2 option in deeper leagues. They'll be drafted in the majority of leagues this summer.
News: The San Francisco 49ers signed fourth-round draft pick Dashon Goldson on Monday but have yet to come to terms with linebacker Patrick Willis, the 11th overall pick. Terms of Goldson's deal were not released. He is the fifth of San Francisco's nine draft picks to sign with the team, which opens training camp next Monday.
Analysis: Goldson, a safety from Washington who was the third of three fourth-round picks by the 49ers this April, played in 33 games with the Huskies after transferring from Coffeyville (KS) Community College before the 2004 season. In three years at Washington, the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Goldson recorded 194 tackles, four interceptions, four fumble recoveries and 18 passes defended. His addition strengthens the 49ers DST a bit, but the addition of Willis will really make them more attractive.
News: The Niners took Ole Miss LB Patrick Willis with the 11th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Most pundits considered him one of, if not the, best linebacker in college football last year. He ran a 4.51 40-yard dash at the combine with 22 reps on the bench press. He had 137 tackles in his senior season with the Rebels.
Analysis: Willis is expected to start as an inside linebacker job with the club. Defensively, the Niners have greatly improved this offseason. Their secondary will be tough to pass on with Nate Clements and Michael Lewis coming aboard, and their linebackers are deceptively talented with the addition of Willis and Tully Banta-Cain. The only question is their defensive line, which doesn't have popular names but does have the potential to be good. It's official: The 49ers DST is a sleeper unit for 2007, specifically if they can land a good return man for kickoffs and punts. Look their way with a final-round pick in deeper 2007 Fantasy drafts.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the 49ers released LB Renauld Williams and re-signed reserve LB Hannibal Navies. The move was made in anticipation of Colby Bockwoldt coming aboard for the Niners.
Analysis: Defensively, the Niners have greatly improved this offseason. Their secondary will be tough to pass on with Nate Clements and Michael Lewis coming aboard, and their linebackers are deceptively talented with the addition of Tully Banta-Cain.
News: The 49ers and LB Tully Banta-Cain have agreed to a deal, according to numerous reports. Banta-Cain should take over one of the outside linebacker spots in the Niners' 3-4 defense. Earlier this offseason, the Niners signed CB Nate Clements, SS Michael Lewis and DT Aubrayo Franklin.
Analysis: Defensively, the Niners have greatly improved this offseason. Their secondary will be tough to pass on and their linebackers are deceptively talented with the addition of Banta-Cain.
News: The 49ers signed cornerback Nate Clements and safety Michael Lewis, making two bold moves in the opening hours of free agency. Clements, the star cornerback from the Bills, agreed to an eight-year, $80 million contract. The six-year veteran was considered one of the top prizes in free agency, and the up-and-coming 49ers rewarded him accordingly with what's believed to be the richest contract for a defensive back in NFL history. Lewis, a safety from Philadelphia, got a six-year contract and a fresh start after a rough finish to his career with the Eagles. He will become an immediate starter in the 49ers' inconsistent defensive secondary alongside Clements, coach Mike Nolan said. The team also signed DT Aubrayo Franklin, who is expected to help with the D-line rotation.
Analysis: Clements and Lewis should start alongside Tony Parrish and Shawntae Spencer in San Francisco, giving them quite possibly the best secondary in the NFC. Combined with their young linebackers, the Niners defense has become a sleeper DST unit worth drafting in the late rounds of deeper drafts in 2007.
News: According to published reports, the 49ers have agreed to a eight-year, $80 million contract with free-agent DB Nate Clements. Clements had 70 tackles and three interceptions playing for the Bills in 2006.
Analysis: Clements has played in 96 games as a pro and has been a starter pretty much since he stepped into the league as a rookie in 2006. He has not started just five games in his five-year career. He is widely considered one of the best shutdown corners in the league. That hurts his Fantasy value somewhat in IDP leagues because teams don't like to throw his way and that makes it hard for him to get interceptions. But he is still a decent option in most Fantasy leagues. His addition also boosts the value of the 49ers DST, but they will need to sign a few more players before becoming a must-have Fantasy option.
News: The Santa Rose Press Democrat reports Friday that the Niners are visiting with CB Nate Clements and SS Michael Lewis, and are expecting a visit from DE Adalius Thomas soon. Several outlets are reporting that Clements and the Niners are close to a deal, and that Thomas would be next on the Niners' list (they have tons of salary cap money to spend).
Analysis: We could be looking at the best sleeper DST in 2007 Fantasy play if they add these guys. Obviously, adding Clements and Thomas would make them pretty amazing defensively, but don't discount Lewis, who was once considered one of the better young safeties in the game before encountering some injuries. Monitor what happens out by the Bay.
News: The 49ers defense/special teams unit made small steps this season but remained one of the less desirable units in Fantasy Football. They totaled two defensive touchdowns, 34 sacks, 14 interceptions (eight by Walt Harris) and 19 fumble recoveries. They finished 26th in total defense in the league.
Analysis: The Niners have some solid pieces in place with CBs Shawntae Spencer and Walt Harris, LBs Manny Lawson, Brandon Moore and Derek M. Smith, and DL Roderick Green, but they still have work to do. Consider the Niners at best a sleeper unit in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: The San Francisco 49ers hired San Diego linebackers coach Greg Manusky as their defensive coordinator Thursday. Manusky, who played 12 seasons in the NFL, spent the last five years on the Chargers' staff, where he worked on one of the league's top defenses. He spent the previous season with Washington before following coach Marty Schottenheimer to San Diego, where they ran a 3-4 defense similar to the scheme favored by 49ers coach Mike Nolan.
Analysis: The Niners defense has some pieces in place but need a strong offseason in free agency and the draft to be considered a starting unit in Fantasy play in 2007.
News: The 49ers allowed 23 points and 325 yards of total offense in an overtime win at Denver in Week 17. They intercepted two passes (one off Jay Cutler and the other off backup Jake Plummer) and also recovered a fumble in the game. They added three sacks.
Analysis: The 49ers will be a trendy sleeper pick in Fantasy drafts in 2007 drafts, but monitor their offseason moves before deciding where to take them.
News: The San Francisco 49ers DST allowed 26 points and 372 total net yards in Week 16 against the Cardinals. They also had two sacks, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The San Francisco defense does not do enough positive things to consider in Fantasy leagues for Week 17 at Denver.
News: The 49ers inactives for Week 16 against the Cardinals are FS Deke Cooper, FB Chris Hetherington, QB Shaun Hill, DL Lance Legree and TE Delanie Walker.
Analysis: None of these players are worth using for in any Fantasy leagues when healthy.
News: The San Francisco 49ers DST allowed just 14 points in Week 15 at Seattle. They allowed 300 total net yards and had three sacks and two interceptions in the victory.
Analysis: Despite the stellar effort on the road, the 49ers DST is still not worth using in any Fantasy leagues when they host the Cardinals in Week 16.
News: The San Francisco 49ers placed backup cornerbacks Sammy Davis (quadriceps) and Donald Strickland (strained left knee) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Cornerback B.J. Tucker and linebacker Renauld Williams were signed from the practice squad to replace them.
News: The 49ers defense allowed 30 points, totaling one sack against the Packers in Week 14.
Analysis: Using the 49ers defense is not a recommended option, especially at Seattle in Week 15.
News: The 49ers on Tuesday waived safety Tony Parrish, who once started 121 consecutive games before falling out of favor this season. The 49ers released Parrish to make room for veteran linebacker Jay Foreman, who was signed to fill in while starting linebacker Derek Smith is out with a hamstring injury.
Analysis: Parrish should be released in all leagues, while Foreman will help provide depth at linebacker for the Niners. The move shouldn't improve or lower the value of the 49ers defense.
News: The 49ers allowed 34 points and 375 yards of offense in Week 13 at New Orleans, including four touchdowns to rookie RB Reggie Bush. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Niners did not have any problems shutting down the passing game, but they had no answer for Bush. They face a decent matchup against an erratic Green Bay offense in Week 14, but there are likely better options out there.
News: The 49ers defense allowed 349 yards and 20 points in a Week 12 loss to the Rams. DL Bryant Young had 1 1/2 sacks and DL Roderick Green had 1/2 sack. LB Manny Lawson had an interception.
Analysis: The 49ers defense is still not a recommended Fantasy DST. The 49ers play the Saints in Week 13. Young and Lawson can be used as low-end Fantasy IDP options at this time, but Lawson does has more value in keeper leagues.
News: The 49ers DST had three interceptions against Seattle, with two fumble recoveries and two sacks. DB Walt Harris had two interceptions. DL Marques Douglas had two tackles and a sack. DB Keith Lewis had four tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. DB Marcus Hudson had a fumble recovery and a tackle. LB Brandon Moore had six tackles. LB Derek Smith had three tackles. DB Shawntae Spencer had three tackles.
Analysis: Consider the 49ers DST a good sleeper against the Rams in Week 12. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The 49ers defense held the Lions to 13 points, totaling three sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception at Detroit in Week 10.
Analysis: The Niners have yielded one touchdown over their last two games. Owners may want to use them when they play against weak offenses. That will not be the case vs. Seattle in Week 11, so keep them on the waiver wire.
News: The 49ers defense held the Vikings to just three points and 238 yards in a Week 9 victory. The 49ers got sacks from LB Brandon Moore (14 total tackles), DL Marques Douglas and half a sacks from DL Anthony Adams and DL Bryant Young. The 49ers also got an interception from DB Walt Harris, his fourth of the season.
Analysis: Don't be fooled by the strong performance from the 49ers defense. They have had plenty of poor weeks, reference Week 6 against the Chargers (48 points) and Week 8 against the Bears (41 points). It is not recommended you use the 49ers DST in Week 10 against the Lions. Young and Harris are the only players worth using in IDP leagues at this point.
News: The 49ers defense allowed 41 points in the first half at Chicago in Week 8 before shutting them out in the second half. They added one sack and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The 49ers defense is not worth owning in any league as they aren't strong defensively at all. They host the Vikings in Week 9.
News: The 49ers have spent two weeks preparing for the unbeaten Bears, and the Cardinals gave them a pretty good blueprint to follow. Although the Cardinals lost 24-23, they provided some glimpses of what it might take to beat the Bears. "We watched the game," coach Mike Nolan said. "There are certainly things from a scheme standpoint that we looked at. I won't say much as to what it is. I don't want to tip my hand as to what I thought they did well or not. There were some things that Arizona did a nice job on."
Analysis: Nolan has decided to make some minor adjustments on defense, most notably the elevation of special-teams captain Keith Lewis into a prominent role on defense. Lewis is expected to split time with starting free safety Mike Adams in hopes of providing a more physical presence in the secondary. Still, don't use the 49ers defense in Week 8.
News: The San Diego Chargers tallied 48 points and 421 yards of total offense in Week 6 at San Francisco. The 49ers did force one turnover in the game, but did not record a sack.
Analysis: This game was a prime example of why we would never recommend the 49ers in Fantasy play this season. They simply could not stop the Chargers from scoring and were inept in every aspect of the game on defense. They'll be on a bye in Week 7.
News: After an extremely poor showing in Week 4 against the Chiefs, the 49ers defense did much better in Week 5 against the Raiders. They held the Raiders to 20 points while yielding 370 yards. They got one sack, but more importantly had four interceptions.
Analysis: The four interceptions were a nice touch to a strong performance in Week 5. The 370 yards are misleading as the 49ers put on a strong performance most of the game. Still, they are not a great Fantasy DST and we recommend you don't play them in Week 6 while they play the Chargers.
News: The 49ers defense gave up 41 points and 333 total yards in Week 4 to the Chiefs. They did not sack Chiefs backup QB Damon Huard once, forced no fumbles and had no interceptions. It was an all-around bad week for the Niners defense.
Analysis: The 49ers DST remains an iffy Fantasy option. They are too inconsistent to be counted on. Not to mention you might run into some weeks like Week 4. Consider using another defense in Week 5.
News: The 49ers DST was torched against the Eagles for 416 yards and had one fumble recovery and three sacks. DB Shawntae Spencer recovered a fumble, and DL Anthony Adams and LB Brandon Moore each had a sack. DB Chad Williams and LB Derek Smith each had a half-sack.
Analysis: The 49ers DST is not a recommended start against Kansas City in Week 4.

49ers D strong in win
News: The 49ers defense had a much better week against the Rams than they did in Week 1 vs. Arizona, holding St. Louis to 265 yards of offense and 13 points. They forced one fumble and sacked QB Marc Bulger six times. DB Walt Harris led all tacklers with seven, DL Bryant Young had five tackles and one sack, and rookie DL Manny Lawson had three tackles and two sacks.
Analysis: The 49ers defense looked much better against the Rams. With this performance they certainly should be considered in future weeks, but Week 3 against the Eagles might be a risky start.

49ers D horrendous in loss
News: The Cardinals easily moved the offense up and down the field early against the 49ers scoring 21 points in the first quarter and finishing the game with 34 points. The 49ers allowed 367 total yards and four touchdowns. They did have three sacks, forced three fumbles and recovered one. LB Derek Smith led all tacklers with nine total. Defensive back Walt Harris had six tackles and a sack. First-round pick Manny Lawson had six tackles in his pro debut. 13-year veteran Bryant Young chipped in with four tackles and a sack.
Analysis: This is pretty much going to be the story of the 49ers season. The defense is going to take its lumps, but IDP owners might benefit. Players like Smith and Lawson could have decent individual stats because the 49ers are going to have to make a lot of plays on defense. But for Week 2 vs. St. Louis, you might want to sit the 49ers D.

2 49er defenders on inj. report
News: San Francisco's DL Parys Haralson (foot) is doubtful for Week 1 at Arizona. DB Shawntae Spencer (hamstring) is questionable.
Analysis: Spencer, owned in 23 percent of CBS SportsLine's IDP leagues, was able to practice Friday, while Haralson (less than 1 percent) wasn't. As a unit, the 49ers' defense is a high-risk option at this point. Week 1 at Arizona (Edgerrin James, Larry Fitzgerald and Aquan Boldin) is particularly dangerous for them. Bench 'em.

Spencer practices for Niners
News: SF49ers.com reports that CB Shawntae Spencer (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis on Sunday but vows to play when the season starts at Arizona in Week 1. "I did individuals last week and other drills with our trainer and pool work and I wasn't swollen at all the next day," said Spencer. "I don't see any reason that I'll be sore tomorrow. I'm going to play, whatever I have to do to play. I'm going to play. Whether I feel good or bad, I'm going to play to the best of my ability. This is the season now." ... In other news, the team claimed LB Roderick Green off waivers from the Ravens. He will play as a DE/OLB.
Analysis: Spencer helps the Niners' secondary, and Green will provide some depth, but this unit is too young and too inexperienced to be used in Fantasy Football. Playing at Arizona is a receipe for disaster for owners who decide to use the 49ers DST -- don't be one of them.

49ers release three defenders

News: Spencer (hamstring) did not play in Sunday's preseason game against the Raiders due to his injury hamstring. He might be able to return to practice some time this week, however.

49ers deal CB Mike Rumph
News: The Washington Redskins traded WR Taylor Jacobs to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night for CB Mike Rumph.
Analysis: Rumph was having some difficulty fitting into new coach Mike Nolan's system, so the former first-rounder was shipped out. This is not a huge loss for the 49ers defense. With or without Rumph, they are not a unit worth owning in Fantasy leagues of any kind.

San Francisco drafts DE Manny Lawson
News: The San Francisco 49ers selected N.C. State DE/OLB Manny Lawson with the No. 22 overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft.

News: The 49ers DST recorded 16 interceptions, 28 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries, six TDs and allowed 428 points (26.7 PPG) this season.

Analysis: If you started the 49ers defense against the Colts, you are a glutton for punishment. They actually didn't do as poorly against Peyton Manning and the Colts vaunted offense as they could have. The 49ers are off in Week 6 before heading to Washington in Week 7.

CB Derrick Johnson is pulled a groin during the Arizona game and is expected to miss at least a game or two. DL Marques Douglas is nursing a sore elbow, but was able to play in Week 4. Plummer continues to rehab
News: The 49ers official website reports CB Ahmed Plummer has spent the last five months rehabbing his injured neck. He has been cleared to participate in the team's upcoming minicamps. "It feels good to be able to participate a little bit, as far as my injury. It's the type of injury where you have good days and bad days," Plummer said. "But I'm encouraged with the energy I feel from the locker room…I'm just going to trust the lord. I do not believe this is it for me. I don't believe this injury is going to stop my career."
Analysis: The ailment forced Plummer to finish last season on injured reserve. He recorded 22 total tackles in six contest.
News: The San Francisco DST allowed 16 points, 136 rushing yards and 214 passing yards at the Rams Sunday. They also had three sacks.
