News: The Seahawks made strides in improving its pass rush and creating depth on defense in the 2012 NFL Draft. They spent a first-round pick on West Virginia pass rush specialist Bruce Irvin and followed it up with Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner in Round 2. The rest of the haul includes Florida defensive tackle Jaye Howard, Idaho linebacker Korey Toomer, Northwestern State cornerback Jeremy Lane, Kentucky safety Winston Guy, N.C. State defensive tackle J.R. Sweezy and Louisville defensive tackle Greg Scruggs.
Analysis: Some feel Irvin was picked too soon, but he's a capable pass rusher who head coach Pete Carroll was familiar with. He should develop into a good defender for the Seahawks and thus help their sack totals (they had 33 last year). Everyone else is probably a year away from contributing defensively. But with their additions of Jason Jones to the D-line and linebacker Barrett Ruud to the middle of the defense on top of their already tough secondary, this is a big sleeper for 2012. We encourage owners to consider the Seahawks with a final-round pick.
News: Defensive tackle Red Bryant agreed to terms on a new contract with the Seahawks on Tuesday, keeping their unique, 325-pound defensive end from bolting out of town. ESPN.com reported Bryant agreed to a $35 million deal over five years with $14.5 million in guarantees. Bryant transformed into one of Seattle's most valuable defensive players after appearing on his way out of the NFL after the 2009 season. It was after that season that Carroll arrived in Seattle and decided to implement a slightly different defensive scheme where Bryant was shifted from defensive tackle to defensive end. Bryant quickly flourished playing the "5" technique on Seattle's defensive line, where his main responsibility was to be a space-eating run stuffer and hold the point of attack on the defensive edge.
Analysis: Bryant is great for the Seahawks defense in that he provides run defense and pass rush skills. He's a big part of what they do. If they can get their linebackers in order and do what they can to improve their pass rush, they'll be a very dangerous and underrated defense in 2012. Their secondary might be one of the best in the league. We'd take them late in drafts.
News: The Seahawks allowed 23 points on 388 yards of total offense in Week 17 against the Cardinals. Seattle gave up 257 yards in the air, including 149 to Larry Fitzgerald. The Seahawks were able to force a pair of turnovers in the 23-20 loss, but allowed Arizona to put points on the board in every quarter.
Analysis: The Seahawks actually finished as one of the highest scoring Fantasy DSTs, thanks to scoring four touchdowns over a three-game stretch back in early December. The unit racked up 35 sacks and forced 31 turnovers on the year, while scoring five total TDs. Seattle to looks to have a solid core of players in place coming back next season, so the unit could end making some noise once again. Consider the Seahawks a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into 2012.
News: The Seahwks did a solid job of shutting down the Cardinals earlier in the year and will be looking for similar success in Week 17. Seattle held the division foe to 324 yards of total offense and 10 points in Week 3. Arizona ranks 17th in the league in passing and 25th in rushing. The Seahawks rank 13th against both the pass and run.
Analysis: The Seahawks have recorded 31 sacks thus far with 21 interceptions and five DST scores. Seattle matches up with Arizona very well so consider their DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: The Seahawks surrendered 19 points on 349 yards of total offense in Week 16 against the 49ers. The unit only allowed 171 yards through the air, but gave up 178 on the ground. Frank Gore accounted for 83 of those and the unit was unable top force any turnovers in the 19-17 defeat. Seattle did sack Alex Smith three times, while also blocking a punt, which led to a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has been playing very well of late, but failed to come up with any game changing plays on Saturday. Still, the unit played pretty well and was one of the few nice surprises over the final few weeks of the season. The Seahawks will now look to close out the year on a high note when they visit the Cardinals next Sunday. Owners in leagues that run through Week 17, should consider the Seahawks a No. 2 Fantasy DST against Arizona.
News: The Seahawks returned two interceptions for touchdowns their last time out but likely will not be as productive in Week 16 against the 49ers. San Francisco ranks ninth in the league in rushing, averaging 125 yards per game, and 30th in passing. Seattle ranks 11th against the run and 13th in pass defense. The Seahawks have recorded 29 sacks thus far with 21 interceptions and five DST scores.
Analysis: Defense and special teams have been some of the stronger points for the Seahawks so far this season but they could be in for a long day on Saturday. Seattle held San Francisco to 209 yards of total offense when they met in Week 1 but lost the contest 33-17, thanks to two kick returns by WR Ted Ginn. While they have held opponents to under 20 points in five of the last six games, owners should consider the Seahawks DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 16.
News: The Seahawks DST had a monster performance Week 15 in a win over the hapless Bears in Chicago. The Seahawks DST scored twice on interceptions as Red Bryant recorded a 20-yard interception return for a TD in the third quarter and Brandon Browner added a 42-yard TD return off a pick in the fourth to ice the win. The Seahawks DST held the Bears to 221 yards in the game and forced five turnovers, with four coming on interceptions. The Seahawks DST added four sacks in the 38-14 win.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST continues to be fantastic and now has a defensive or special teams touchdown in three straight games. In fact, the unit has four in its last three performances. The Seahawks DST has recorded 11 turnovers forced in the last three games alone. Heading into Week 16 against San Francisco, the Seahawks DST has proven one of the hottest units around. That said, the 49ers should prove much better than the Bears. Fantasy owners should look to the Seahawks DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit for Week 16.
News: The Seahawks defense enters Week 15 at Chicago on a hot streak, having recorded eight interceptions and 11 sacks in its last four games. That's especially good news against a Bears offense that has floundered with starting QB Jay Cutler sidelined by a thumb injury. His replacement, Caleb Hanie, has been miserable in three starts, throwing six interceptions and getting sacked 15 times. The Bears are also expected to be without starting RB Matt Forte, who has a sprained knee. Counting Week 13, when Forte first went down with the injury, the Bears have scored a total of 13 points and gained a total of 426 yards in the two games their two star players have missed.
Analysis: In the three games Hanie has started, the Bears have given up 19.0 Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs, which would be the most in the league over a full season. Clearly, this matchup would be favorable for any defense, but for one of the hottest in the league, it's a can't-miss. The Seahawks haven't just gotten it done with big plays. They've allowed less than 300 yards to four of their last eight opponents, so everything points to another big game this week. Keep the Seahawks DST active as a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: The Seahawks DST started Monday night's win over the Rams off on the right foot in Week 14. The special teams gave Seattle an early 7-0 lead over the Rams when Michael Robinson returned a blocked punt 17 yards for a touchdown. The Seahawks DST gave up just 281 total yards in the 30-13 victory. The Seahawks DST forced just one turnover in the win as Brandon Browner intercepted Rams QB Sam Bradford. The Seahawks DST also sacked Bradford three times.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST is looking like a high-end unit as the Fantasy playoffs are here. The unit put together its second consecutive big performance and now has limited opponents to just 27 points over that span. The Seahawks DST has five sacks, six turnovers forced and two defensive or special teams touchdowns in the last two games. Heading into Week 15 at Chicago, the Seahawks DST is well-worth keeping active in many Fantasy formats.
News: The Seahawks won't be facing the most potent offense when they go up against the Rams in Week 14. St. Louis ranks 27th in the league in rushing and 28th in passing, averaging under 186 yards per game. Seattle sports the 11th-best run defense in the league, giving up under 104 yards per game, and rank 20th in pass defense. The Seahawks has recorded 22 sacks thus far with 16 interceptions and two DST scores.
Analysis: The Seahawks' defense looked solid holding the Eagles to 330 yards of total offense and 14 points a week ago and should have even better success against the Rams. St. Louis currently does not have a healthy QB, and it looks as though Sam Bradford will get the start on Monday night. Seattle's pass rush and solid run defense should limit the Rams so consider their DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 14.
News: The Seahawks defense picked off Eagles QB Vince Young four times, with LB David Hawthorne returning the third interception 77 yards for a touchdown in Seattles 31-14 victory over Philadelphia. The Seahawks took complete control of the game early, forcing the Eagles to try to come back on the strength of Youngs arm and then took advantage of his inaccuracy and poor decision making from there. Young was sacked two times and LB K.J. Wright added a forced fumble, which Young recovered.
Analysis: It was a dominant performance from the Seahawks defense, and the only real smudge on an otherwise sterling night was LeSean McCoys two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air. Other than that, they flummoxed the Eagles all game and forced Young into a bunch of bad decisions. The Seahawks came in against a team that had been averaging over 420 yards per game of total offense and held them to 330 on the game. It was the first time the Eagles had scored fewer than 16 points in a game. The Seahawks take on St. Louis in Week 14, a Monday night matchup, giving them an extra day to prepare on top of the extra long week thanks to the Thursday night game. The Seahawks should be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST option for Week 14, as the Rams have been a mess this season offensively.
News: The Seahawks DST won't have to deal with QB Michael Vick Week 13 as the Eagles come to Seattle on Thursday night. Vince Young will be starting for the Eagles against the Seahawks DST. While that is moderately good news, the Eagles can still move the ball on offense. In fact, Philadelphia is third in the NFL in total offense with over 420 yards per game. The Eagles are allowing the 10th-fewest Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units on the season.
Analysis: Vick or not, the Seahawks DST will have its hands full against the Eagles on Thursday. The Seahawks DST did not play well against Washington last week, registering just seven Fantasy points with one measly sack and two turnovers forced against a turnover-prone team. Our spirits aren't high on the Seahawks DST in Week 13. Fantasy owners should consider the unit just a No. 2 option, at best.
News: The Seahawks DST couldn't stop the Redskins when it mattered most on Sunday of Week 12 in Seattle. The Seahawks DST gave up 416 total yards of offense to Rex Grossman and the Redskins in the 23-17 loss. The Seahawks DST forced two Washington turnovers, both on Grossman interceptions, but Grossman found Anthony Armstrong for a 50-yard TD bomb in the fourth quarter to help put the game away. The Seahawks DST managed just one sack of Grossman in the game. The Seahawks DST did block a field goal and a PAT in the contest.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST had five sacks last week in St. Louis, but couldn't get to Grossman with nearly the same regularity. Washington was definitely able to put up more offense than expected on the Seahawks DST on Sunday. That said, the unit has been solid recently and faces a struggling Philadelphia club Week 13. For Fantasy owners who have been going with the Seahawks DST, they can continue in Week 13 against the Eagles.
News: The Seahawks DST heads into Week 12 hosting the Washington Redskins at a great time for the unit. The Seahawks DST could make mince meat of the Redskins as Washington has been simply terrible lately on offense. With the quarterback situation a grotesque one as Rex Grossman is likely to be the starter, the running back situation a three-headed joke and injuries to important receivers -- Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson, Chris Cooley -- Washington is in a bad way at the moment. Plus, the Redskins have lost six straight games and are allowing the sixth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST not only are playing against a dismally pathetic offensive team in Week 12 in the Redskins, they are doing so coming off one of their best weeks of the season. The Seahawks DST dominated the Rams in St. Louis Week 11 as they allowed just seven points and 185 yards with three forced turnovers and a season-high five sacks in the game. The Seahawks DST has been in double figures in Fantasy scoring in two straight games and five times on the season. They are a solid unit and a very good start for Week 12 against the Redskins.
News: A punishing defense was more than enough during the Seahawks' 24-7 victory over St. Louis in Week 11. DL Chris Clemons registered three of Seattle's five sacks and two forced fumbles on QB Sam Bradford to help the Seahawks claim their second win in a row. "Sam, he's had a problem holding onto the ball this year, and we knew we'd get opportunities," Clemons said. "Our biggest thing was to stay focused and not give up on our rushing." The five sacks established a season high for Seattle, which has 24 total this year.
Analysis: The Seahawks also shut down RB Steven Jackson (42 yards) and then hounded Bradford, who had little time to operate behind a banged-up line. The Rams were held to 185 yards, a season best for Seattle and the second worst showing of the season for the NFL's lowest scoring team. Bradford has fumbled nine times this season, six of them resulting in turnovers. Seattle held the Rams to 1 yard or less on first down on 12 separate occasions. Consider the Seahawks a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST against Washington in Week 12.
News: After being shredded for a season-high 34 points against Cincinnati in Week 8, Seattle has clamped down on defense en route to a 1-1 record in its past two games. The Seahawks has yielded a combined 40 points, including just 17 in a surprising win over Baltimore last Sunday. Seattle will look to continue its strong stretch on defense in Week 11 against St. Louis, which has scored an NFL-low 113 points this season.
Analysis: The Seahawks have benefited greatly from creating turnovers recently and collected three against the Ravens last week. They have now recorded multiple takeaways in two of their past three games after being limited in that category earlier this season. Seattle also finished with double-digits in Fantasy points for the fourth time this season against Baltimore. Consider the Seahawks a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 11.
News: The Seahawks defense and special teams stepped up in Week 10 against the Ravens. They held Ray Rice to just 27 7ards rushing. They also sacked and picked off Joe Flacco one time apiece. The Ravens would try to rally late, but fall short as the Seahawks held on for the 22-17 win. Seattle recovered two fumbles on kickoffs (both from David Reed), setting themselves up in good field position.
Analysis: The Seahawks aren't one of the top defenses in the league, but they looked good on Sunday. They face the Rams next weekend and will have to contain Steven Jackson. But if the Seahawks can do as good of a job as they did versus Rice, Seattle has a good chance to win the game. Fantasy owners should view the Seahawks DST as a No. 2 option for next weekend.
News: Seattle hosts Baltimore in Week 10, a team that boasts one of the best running backs in the NFL in Ray Rice. The Seahawks allowed DeMarco Murray run for 139 yards last weekend -- the first time a running back hit the century mark on the defense. Opposing DSTs are averaging 10.12 Fantasy points per contest against Baltimore this season.
Analysis: Seattle gave up 23 points and 442 total yards of offense in Week 9 against Dallas, which is banged up on offense. While Baltimore has struggled to score at times this season, the Ravens have some nice weapons on offense. Fantasy owners should not be starting Seattle's DST in Week 10.
News: While the Seahawks' DST has struggled overall this season, it has done a good job of limiting the running game. That trend was reversed in a Week 9 loss to the Cowboys, as RB DeMarco Murray rushed for 139 yards, marking the first time this season that a running back has amassed at least 100 yards against Seattle. The Seahawks yielded 23 points and 442 total yards of offense. One of the few bright spots was a recovery of a Dez Bryant fumble in the second quarter, which prevented a Dallas touchdown.
Analysis: There was little to like about the performance of the Seahawks DST in Week 9, and they won't get much of a break in Week 10 against the Ravens. Owners should continue to ignore the Seahawks DST in most formats.
News: The Seahawks DST is coming off an unimpressive Week 8 performance against the Bengals, and they could have a difficult time bouncing back in Week 9. They will face the Cowboys, who enter the week ranking eighth in the league in total offensive yardage per game. One area where the Seahawks' defense has excelled is in limiting their opponents' rushing attack, as the 3.2 yards per carry that they have allowed opposing rushers is the lowest average in the league. However, the Cowboys will test the Seahawks' defense, as their 4.8 yards per carry ranks fifth in the league.
Analysis: Though the Seahawks' DST ranks just 19th among all units, they have had a few productive games this season. However, with the Cowboys' offense having been one of the more potent ones in the league, this does not promise to be one of the Seahawks' better weeks defensively. At the very most, the Seahawks DST can be used as a No. 2 unit for Week 9.
News: The Seahawks had a difficult time slowing down the Bengals in Week 8. While Cincinnati posted just 252 yards of total offense, Seattle couldn't keep them off the board in he 34-12 loss. Rookie QB Andy Dalton threw for 168 yards with two touchdowns and the Bengals gained 92 yards on the ground. The Seahawks also picked Dalton off twice in the defeat.
Analysis: The Seahawks gave up a season-high 34 points on Sunday but seven of them came on a interception returned for a touchdown. While they have been able to put together a couple of decent performances, their lack of offense leaves their defense on the field for long periods of time. Seattle could be in for more trouble next week against the Cowboys so continue to view their DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: The Seahawks defense could be in trouble in Week 8 against the Bengals. While Cincinnati ranks 20th and 21st in the league in pass and rush offense, respectively, Seattle's secondary has been decimated by injuries over the last few weeks. The Seahawks enter Sunday ranked 11th against the run and 20th in pass defense. Seattle has recorded 13 sacks thus far with six interceptions.
Analysis: The Seahawks had a strong showing their last time out, including blocking two field goals, but with the way their offense has struggled of late, their defense has been left on the field for long periods of time. The Bengals have progressed nicely in the passing game under rookie QB Andy Dalton and should be able to take advantage of Seattle's thinning secondary. Owners should consider the Seahawks DST as a No. 2 option for Week 8.
News: Seattle kept Cleveland out of the end zone in Week 7, but the offense couldn't support the defense in a 6-3 loss. Cleveland managed just 298 yards, with 141 coming on the ground. The Seahawks pressured QB Colt McCoy all day, forcing him to throw an interception and he was sacked five times.
Analysis: On top of the loss, the Seahawks lost DB Walter Thurmond to a broken leg and DB Kam Chancellor to a knee injury. The secondary could be very banged up going into Week 8 against the Bengals. Despite the strong performance, the Seahawks DST is still a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Seahawks are fresh coming off their Week 6 bye and resume action in Week 7 at Cleveland. The Browns could be down starting RB Peyton Hillis to a hamstring injury, so Montario Hardesty could start. QB Colt McCoy will be under center to lead a Cleveland offense averaging 228.8 passing yards per game.
Analysis: The Seattle defense hasn't had a ton of success in 2011. Opponents have scored 24 or more points in four of five games this season. The Seahawks haven't held an opponent to less than 24 points in any of their three road games either. It doesn't help their cause that DB Marcus Trufant is out for the year with a back injury. The Browns aren't a high-powered offense, but the Seahawks DST remains a low-end option for Week 7.
News: The Seahawks will face a Giants team in Week 5 that ranks just 21st in the league in total yardage at 333.0 yards per game. However, they rank ninth in the league in scoring, averaging 25.5 points per game. They have scored at least 28 points in each of their last three games.
Analysis: The Giants have begun to click offensively after getting off to a slow start in Week 1 at Washington. Part of that has to do with the emergence of Victor Cruz in the passing game, adding a much-needed third receiver to the likes of Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham. Eli Manning has also been surprisingly protective of the ball in recent games. After throwing 25 interceptions a year ago and beginning the year with an interception in each of the first two games this season, he has not thrown one in each of the last two weeks. With the Seahawks already a very low-end play in Fantasy, this does not appear to be the right matchup to take a chance on them in any league.
News: Entering its Week 4 matchup against visiting Atlanta, the Seattle defense was focused on slowing the Falcons' potent passing game. However, Atlanta showcased several receiving options and escaped with a 30-28 victory on Sunday. The Seahawks allowed three different receivers to record at least six catches, including a game-high 11 receptions by rookie Julio Jones, who amassed 127 yards. Seattle entered the game having yielded just 218.3 passing yards per game, but the Falcons racked up 291 yards on Sunday.
Analysis: The Seahawks gave up a total of 412 yards to Atlanta, the second time this season they have allowed an opponent to reach at least 400 yards. Seattle also failed to sack Falcons QB Matt Ryan during Sunday's game as the team could not break through the visitors' improved pass protection. The Seahawks travel to New York to face the Giants in Week 5, which could be an intriguing matchup against another error-prone quarterback in Eli Manning. Consider Seattle a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 5.
News: Despite Atlantas early-season struggles in the passing game, the Seattle defense is taking the Falcons' offense very seriously during the teams' meeting in Week 4. Theyre very talented, Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said Thursday. We know that first hand from playing them last year. Theyre even better now with Julio Jones. The Falcons are averaging 250.3 passing yards per game this season -- 18th-best in the NFL -- while Seattle has limited opponents to just 218.3 yards per outing, good for 10th fewest in the league.
Analysis: Its no coincidence that last Sunday was not only one of Seattles best overall defensive performances, but also its best day rushing the quarterback as they racked up three sacks and two interceptions. That just picks up the whole tempo, Bradley said. The defensive backs were talking about it on the sideline, how things were coming on a little bit quicker. They felt it too. Atlanta is one of the worst teams at protecting the quarterback and have given up 13 sacks in three games this year. Consider the Seahawks a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 4.
News: The Seahawks would hold the Cardinals to just 10 points in Week 3. Arizona managed 252 passing and 90 rushing yards on the day, as they played without Beanie Wells. The Seahawks also intercepted Kevin Kolb twice and sacked him three times on the day.
Analysis: Seattle stepped up on Sunday, but for the most part has fallen flat this year. The Seahawks host the Falcons in Week 4, a team with a lot of offensive weapons. Fantasy owners should steer clear of the Seahawks DST next week.
News: Seattle couldn't stop Pittsburgh's offense in Week 2, and it won't get much easier for the Seahawks this Sunday. Seattle hosts Arizona in Week 3, a team that is averaging 359 yards and 24.5 points per game this year. The Seahawks haven't put much pressure on the quarterback this season as they have just two sacks to their credit, which is among the worst in the NFL.
Analysis: Seattle is going to try to create turnovers, something they have failed to do through two weeks. We havent gotten any takeaways like we stressed all during training camp, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. If Seattle can do that and get to the quarterback, they could have a chance on Sunday. But for now, Fantasy owners should not consider the Seahawks DST has an option for Week 3.
News: The Seahawks DST did nothing in Sunday's Week 2 matchup at Pittsburgh. Seattle had two sacks and no turnovers against the Steelers. On special teams, Leon Washington had two kickoff returns for 39 yards. Pittsburgh also racked up 421 yards of total offense.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has minimal Fantasy value in the majority of leagues. Ignore them in all formats for Week 2 against Arizona.
News: The Seahawks held the 49ers to just 209 total yards of offense -- 85 on the ground -- in Week 1, but couldn't put pressure on QB Alex Smith. Seattle did not force a turnover and did not record a sack as they lost to San Francisco, 33-17. On special teams the Seahawks allowed Ted Ginn to score on a kickoff and punt return, which put the game out of reach. It felt really like we were right there to take this game over, then we just fell apart in the kicking game," coach Pete Carroll said.
Analysis: In Week 2, the Seahawks face the Steelers a team that could muster only seven points on Sunday. Granted the Ravens defense is better than the one in Seattle, but the 'hawks could have a nice day. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the Seahawks moving forward as they could be a nice bye-week replacement later in the year.
News: The last time the Seahawks faced the 49ers they allowed QB Alex Smith to throw for 255 yards and three touchdowns. We let him get going a little bit, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. We didnt disrupt him and he got in rhythm. Hes a good quarterback when hes got time, so weve got to disrupt him. In the two meetings in 2010, Seattle held San Francisco to six points in the first contest, but were blown out 40-21 in the second game, which was in San Fran. But Bradley has been scouting new coach Jim Harbaugh during the offseason. We do a lot of studying," Bradley said. "Its going to be a game where we just have to adjust to what theyre doing,"
Analysis: Seattle is familiar with San Francisco, but with a new coach in town it will take some game-time adjusting to the 49ers' offense. They collected 37 sacks and intercept 12 passes in 2010, but with some new faces in Seattle it may take some time to get things running on all cylinders. Fantasy owners should view the Seahawks DST as a bye-week replacement this year and isn't worth starting in the majority of leagues for Week 1.
News: Playing on the road for the first time this postseason, Seattle knew it would have to weather a hostile crowd and limit the big plays of strong-armed Chicago QB Jay Cutler. The Seahawks did neither and allowed three touchdowns, including two passing scores from Cutler, on the Bears' first four possessions of the game and suffered a 35-24 loss in the NFC Divisional Playoff. "Jay's a very athletic quarterback," Seattle LB Will Herring said. "So we have to account for that. He really hurt us with his feet." The Seahawks surrendered 437 total yards and allowed the Bears offense to posses the ball for an astounding 37 minutes in the game. "I would have loved to have got this game today that so many people didn't think we could," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.
Analysis: The Seahawks' defense barely resembled the same unit that stunned the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in the Wild Card Round. Seattle allowed 176 rushing yards to the Bears, including a whopping 43 yards and two touchdowns to Cutler, the first rushing touchdown it has surrendered to an opposing quarterback this season. The Seahawks, who qualified for the playoffs with a 7-9 record as the NFC West division winner, did manage three sacks and intercepted an errant Matt Forte pass from the Wildcat formation. "We need to take this with us," Carroll said about his team's progression. "We can't forget what it took to get here." Seattle should be viewed as a No. 3 Fantasy DST entering the 2011 season and saved for the later rounds of drafts.
News: Pete Carroll sounded optimistic that LB Lofa Tatupu (concussion) will be able to play in the NFC Divisional playoff game against the Bears. "Lofa responded very well (Monday)," he said. "I'm very encouraged by his turnaround from yesterday to today." Carroll added that Tatupu should be able to practice later in the week.
Analysis: The Seahawks might have beaten New Orleans in their first playoff game, but it's not like the defense was stout. They did give up 36 points and allowed QB Drew Brees to pass for more than 400 yards. They could definitely use Tatupu's presence against Chicago. The Seahawks already beat Chicago this season -- a 23-20 victory in Week 6.The defense held Chicago to 15 first downs and 307 yards, including just 61 rushing yards. Despite the victory over New Orleans, the Seahawks DST should be viewed as a low-end option in playoff leagues. Heading into 2011, Fantasy owners can consider the Seahawks as a No. 2 DST option.
News: Seattle may not have gotten to New Orleans QB Drew Brees much -- just one sack -- on Saturday in the Wild Card game, but they contained him to a point. The Seahawks allowed Brees to throw for 404 yards, but he would connect with his receivers for just two touchdowns. Former Seahawk Julius Jones rushed for two touchdowns, but he and Reggie Bush would both leave with injuries, leaving DeShawn Wynn as the lone healthy back. The Saints were considered the second-best team in the division behind the NFC South-winning Falcons, but were upended by the 7-9 Seahawks. Seattle would hold New Orleans when it needed to and recovered an onside kick to seal the game for them. The Seahawks won the game, 41-36, and move on to play again next weekend.
Analysis: Seattle's defense wasn't great during the regular season and drew the high-power New Orleans' offense in the first round. It may not have been a pretty win -- as they allowed 481 yards of offense -- but the Seahawks are moving on. They were ranked among the worst defenses in the NFL entering the playoffs, allowing 368.6 total yards of offense per game. Despite the victory, the Seahawks DST should be viewed as a low-end option in playoff leagues. Heading into 2011, Fantasy owners can consider the Seahawks as a No. 2 DST option.
News: The Seahawks defense saved their best performance of the season for last. In the Week 17 game against the Rams that would determine the division winner, Seattle shut St. Louis down to the tune of 184 yards and just six points. They rattled rookie QB Sam Bradford by knocking down several of his passes and sacking him three times, including 2 1/2 by DL Raheem Brock. LB Will Herring intercepted Bradford in the fourth quarter, setting up the drive that put the game out of reach.
Analysis: Not only did the 'Hawks punch their ticket to the post season, but they avenged a 20-3 embarrassment against the Rams earlier in the season. The Seattle defense limited Pro Bowl RB Steven Jackson to 84 total yards. However, in the playoffs next week the task becomes a seemingly-impossible one with the defending champions coming to town. If the Seahawks defense can somehow muster up another stellar performance, they might find themselves playing in the divisional round of the post season. Heading into 2011, the Seahawks DST will likely look like the inconsistent unit it was this season. They have a good core of young talent and a dynamic returner in Leon Washington, but they have not put together a good string of games in a long time. Consider the unit to be a No. 2 Fantasy option for next season.
News: The Seahawks have dropped seven of nine and are on a season-high three-game skid after last week's 38-15 loss at Tampa Bay, but yet they still head into Week 17 against the Rams with a chance at the NFC West crown and a playoff berth. The pressure could fall on the defense to keep Seattle in the game with Charlie Whitehurst expected to make his second career start in place of the injured Matt Hasselbeck (hip). The defense will have to contend with a rookie QB -- Sam Bradford -- that already beat them once in Week 4, 20-3. The Rams racked up 349 yards in that game, but Seattle did sack Bradford four times and forced an interception.
Analysis: Seattle will hopefully contain St. Louis RB Steven Jackson, who has never rushed for over 100 yards against the Seahawks. They will also try to pressure Bradford early and hope he makes some mistakes on the road. But if the offense can't sustain any drives, then their defensive effort might be futile. Look to the Seahawks DST as nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: After giving up a combined 74 points in the last two games, The Seattle defense did not fair much better in the Week 16 loss to the Buccaneers. Not only did they give up 38 points, but they allowed that many to a team that scores just over 21 per game. The Bucs managed to get record performances out of the matter while gashing the Seahawks on eight plays of 20 yards or more. QB Josh Freeman threw five touchdown passes to tie a team-mark, while WR Mike Williams hauled in two scores to tie one. RB LeGarrette Blount set a career-high with 164 rushing yards, including two big-gainers of at least 45 yards. Tampa Bay racked up 439 yards on the afternoon despite being held to 9 through the first quarter.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense has now allowed at least 30 points in seven games this season. They have also managed to lose by at least 15 points in all nine losses this year. The defense has not been able to stop anybody in recent weeks, so how can we expect it to get any better heading into Week 17. The game will be for the AFC West crown against the Rams, a team that dominated the 'Hawks 20-3 earlier this season. Perhaps the crowd at Qwest Field could help out. Even if they can, we still don't recommend utilizing the Seahawks DST in Fantasy play for the Sunday night matchup.
News: Seattle hopes to break Tampa Bay's streak in Week 16. The Buccaneers are trying to beat the Seahawks for the third time in as many seasons on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. Seattle doesn't need to have a winning record to clinch the NFC West, but coach Pete Carroll would like to to a better performance form his team, especially the defense. The Seahawks have given up a combined 74 points in consecutive defeats and an average of 32.0 while dropping six of eight. They allowed 17.8 points per game during their 4-2 start to this season. "Under the circumstances, we're fortunate to be where we are," Carroll said. "We haven't played as well we needed to play, but the opportunity (to win a division title) is there. We need to maximize this chance. We've got to play well. (What St. Louis does) isn't going to be a factor. We've going to go play and try to win the game. We can't afford to do anything but that now."
Analysis: Seattle has allowed opponents to reach 30 points in seven of its eight losses this season. That stat alone should scare Fantasy owners. Through the first 15 weeks of the season the Seahawks defense has been allowing 259 passing and 117.7 rushing yards per game. The Buccaneers ran for 134 yards in last season's 24-7 win in Seattle. Fantasy owners should avoid Seattle's DST in all formats for Week 16.
News: Entering the third quarter of Sunday's Week 15 game, Seattle had held Atlanta -- the NFC South leaders -- to just 17 points and bottled up the Falcons' vaunted running attack to just 44 yards. Then the Seahawks quickly unraveled in the second half. Seattle's offense turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions that led to 17 points for the Falcons against a weary Seahawks defense and lost 34-18 on Sunday. Seattle has now allowed opponents to reach 30 points in seven of its eight losses this season. The Seahawks did, however, limit the Falcons to just 266 total yards in the game -- the first opponent in nine games it has held to fewer than 280 yards.
Analysis: The Seahawks did an admirable job containing Falcons RB Michael Turner (82 yards), who entered the game ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing yards, to his lowest rushing output since Week 10. Still, Seattle rarely pressured Atlanta QB Matt Ryan and collected just one sack Sunday -- giving them six sacks in its last five games. Ryan did notch the lowest passing yardage total of his season but burned the over-matched Seahawks secondary for three touchdowns. The pass defense was supposed to be the team's strong point coming into the game but instead Seattle allowed three passing scores in a game for the third time this season. The Seahawks will be a marginal play for the remainder of the season, especially on the road in Week 16 at Tampa Bay. Consider other options before choosing Seattle's DST.
News: Despite losing five of its last seven games, Seattle remains tied for first place in the NFC West standings but the Seahawks know they must tighten their defense to secure a playoff spot. Seattle faces one of its toughest challenges of the season in Week 15 as Atlantas balanced offense visits Qwest Field on Sunday. Youve got to be on it, thats the best way I can describe it, Seahawks LB Lofa Tatupu said of the NFL's fifth-highest scoring offense. They do everything well. One of the Seahawks' main goals is to limit the effectiveness of Falcons RB Michael Turner, who has run for more than 100 yards in five of his last seven games. Seattle is allowing 119.2 rushing yards per game -- 20th in the NFL -- but has surrendered a touchdown to opposing running backs in nine of its 13 games this season. The Seahawks have struggled holding teams out of the end zone recently and have allowed opponents to score 40 or more points in three of their last four losses.
Analysis: Slowing Turner could be the easier task for the Seahawks on Sunday. Despite the poor showing in the standings, Seattle did hold its Week 14 foe -- San Francisco -- to less than 100 total rushing yards, the first time in three games an opponent has not reached the century mark. What's problematic for the Seahawks is that Atlanta also boasts the NFL's top WR in Roddy White, who leads the league in receptions (99) and yards (1,219). Falcons QB Matt Ryan has also had a tremendous season and has thrown for at least one touchdown in every game since Week 1. Seattle has fared much worse against the pass and is ranked 30th in the NFL, yielding 266.0 yards a game. We're wary the Seahawks defense can prevent the Falcons from becoming the eighth consecutive opponent to rack up at least 280 total yards. Consider other options before settling on Seattle as the team should be viewed as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in Week 15.
News: The Seahawks DST was blown out of the water early in the Week 14 loss at San Francisco. The DST ultimately allowed 336 yards of offense to the 49ers in the 40-21 defeat. The Seahawks DST's day was highlighted by a 92-yard kickoff return by Leon Washington in the third quarter. Otherwise, the DST did not force a single turnover and could only sack QB Alex Smith twice in the game.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has recorded a touchdown in three straight games now. That said, despite dominating the hapless Panthers, the Seahawks DST has not put up great production since Week 7. The unit has been horrendous and the defensive and special teams touchdowns are not going to save it entering Week 15 against Atlanta. We simply cannot recommend them for use against one of the NFL's hottest and best teams.
News: The Seahawks DST enters Week 14 in San Francisco on the heels of one of its better games in a while in Week 13. Of course, they were playing the laughable offense of the Carolina Panthers. Prior to Week 13, the Seahawks DST had recorded single digits in Fantasy points in four of five games. That said, for the season as a whole, the Seahawks DST has been a No. 1 unit in terms of total Fantasy points. A lot of that has to do with the five defensive touchdowns they have recorded.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST posted a couple big efforts early in the year but has really been mediocre, at best, since Week 8. The 49ers have been known to turn the ball over and make some mistakes. In fact, the Seahawks DST recorded 22 Fantasy points with six points allowed and a defensive touchdown Week 1 against San Francisco. That said, the Niners have greatly improved in recent weeks and will get QB Alex Smith back as the starter Week 14. Consider the Seahawks DST nothing more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option for the game.
News: After allowing two touchdowns on Carolina's first four drives, Seattle tightened up the rest of the game and captured a 31-14 victory in Week 13 on Sunday. The defense did not allow a point after the 8:05 mark in the second quarter and forced the Panthers into five punts and an interception by quarterback Jimmy Clausen. The Seahawks, who had not tallied a sack in their previous two games, were able to effectively pressure Clausen and recorded three sacks on the rookie. In the first quarter, Carolina moved the ball behind running back Jonathan Stewart and finished with nine first downs. But the Panthers managed just nine for the remainder of the game as Seattle halted the run and Clausen.
Analysis: If the Seahawks had turned in the type of effort they did in the second half for the entire game, they likely would have registered their first shutout of the season. Seattle buckled up, especially on the ground and held Carolina to just 36 rushing yards in the second half. The Panthers collected 195 total yards in the first half alone but mustered only 88 in the second half to finish with 283. The Seahawks travel to San Francisco in Week 14 and could make for a quality No. 2 Fantasy DST, especially with 49ers star Frank Gore not playing.
News: With a favorable matchup in Week 13 against reeling Carolina, the Seattle defense could bully its way back into an opponent's backfield on Sunday. The Seahawks have just nine sacks in their last six games, including two contests without registering a single takedown after spending the beginning of the season among the league leaders.. However, Seattle hosts Carolina and rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who has been sacked 16 times this season -- the second-most among quarterbacks with less than 200 attempts this season (Oakland's Jason Campbell is first). We need that part of our game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said about his team needing to get to the quarterback.
Analysis: The Seahawks will look to overwhelm a Panthers offensive line that has allowed 15 sacks during its current five-game losing streak. Though Seattle has struggled getting turnovers recently, that could change against the bumbling Carolina offense that will have running back Jonathan Stewart back for just his second game since Week 9. While the matchup is enticing against a poor Panthers team, we can't rank the Seahawks higher than a No. 2 Fantasy DST this week. Playing at home against an East Coast team certainly helps Seattle.
News: The Seahawks defense had a forgettable game in Week 12 against the Chiefs but their special teams was stellar. Seattle blocked both a field goal and a punt in the 42-24 loss. DL Craig Terrill blocked K Ryan Succop's 43-yard attempt in the first quarter and DB Kennard Cox blocked a punt later in the first half, with DB Earl Thomas returning it 10 yards for a touchdown. The Seahawks allowed 503 yards of total offense in the defeat and were unable to record a sack on QB Matt Cassel.
Analysis: The Seahawks were unable to slow down the Chiefs offense at all in Week 12 and forced just one turnover. Luckily for Fantasy owners, their special teams picked up the slack and supplied some offense of their own. Seattle has allowed an average of 33.6 points over their last five games but should be able to do better against the Panthers next week. Carolina has been able to muster 20-plus points only two times this season. Considering the matchup, Fantasy owners might to take a chance with the Seahawks DST in Week 13.
News: One of the Seahawks' strengths at home this year has been creating turnovers. That won't be easy against the Chiefs in Week 12, they have a league-low seven turnovers. "They've done a fantastic job hanging onto the ball," Pete Carroll said.
Analysis: The Chiefs are another top offense in the NFL as they have been averaging 362 yards of total offense in 2010. That is not a good formula for the Seahawks, which means Fantasy owners should avoid them once again in Week 12. With bye weeks over there is no reason to start Seattle's DST.
News: Seattle lost to New Orleans 34-19 in Week 11 -- the main reason being they couldn't slow down Drew Brees. The Saints quarterback threw for 382 and four touchdown passes against a secondary that kept getting banged up. Marcus Trufant would leave the game with a concussion and rookie Earl Thomas got hurt on a touchdown play to Marques Colston. Thomas would return to the game and record eight tackles. The Seahawks would pick off Brees twice on the day, but not sack him. Seattle would allow a total of 494 yards of offense to New Orleans. Seattle got their first roughing the passer penalty of the year and it allowed the Saints to continue one of their scoring drives with less than two minutes left in the first half. The Saints would convert 11 of 15 attempts on third down. All year, we do good on third down, we win; if we dont, we lose, no matter who we play, DB Lawyer Milloy said.
Analysis: Seattle hosts Kansas City in Week 12. The Chiefs are another top offense in the NFL as they have been averaging 362 yards of total offense in 2010. That is not a good formula for the Seahawks, which means Fantasy owners should avoid them once again in Week 12. With bye weeks over there is no reason to start Seattle's DST.
News: The Saints' offense, which amassed 408 yards - 165 rushing - against the Panthers, is expected to become even more dangerous with the return of Reggie Bush, who was injured in Week 2. That is not good news for the Seahawks. Seattle travels to New Orleans in Week 11, a team that is averaging 369.9 yards of offense but rank 25th in rushing with 93.7 yards per game. Seattle LB Aaron Curry had perhaps his best game as a pro last week. "I was definitely in the zone, and I was just feeling it that game," he said. "That's definitely something I can build off of."
Analysis: The Seahawks defense give up a total of 376.9 yards of offense per game and will have their hands full on Sunday. Injuries have hurt Seattle this year as well, but even if they were healthy up front, the Saints have so many weapons it is just going to be hard to keep up. Plus with New Orleans having one of the best defenses, and Seattle's offense sub-par, the defense will have to step up if they have a chance in Week 11. Fantasy owners should shy away from the Seahawks DST this week though, as they are not a recommended start in any format.
News: The Seahawks defense did a solid job of limiting the Cardinals in Week 10. They held Arizona to 327 yards of total offense and picked off QB Derek Anderson once while sacking him five times. DB Kelly Jennings came up with his first interception of the year and LB Aaron Curry and DL Chris Clemons each had two sacks in the 36-18 win. Seattle also forced and recovered a fumble in the victory.
Analysis: Seattle has some injuries along their defensive line but they were still able to get after the quarterback in Week 10 while holding Arizona to just 41 yards rushing. It looks as though being blown out in back-to-back games had a positive effect on the team. The Seahawks DST continues to create turnovers and give the offense some decent field position but they will face a tough task in Week 11. Seattle will travel to New Orleans next week to take on the Saints and their high-powered offense. Continue to view Seattle's DST as a No. 2 option until they prove that they can slow down a team with a good offense.
News: The Seahawks defense enters Week 10 against the Cardinals having not been able to slow many teams down in recent weeks. Seattle has given up 74 combined points in their last two games and have allowed teams to have their way on offense. Arizona comes into Sunday's matchup ranked 31st and 28th in the league in passing and rushing, respectively, while the Seahawks are 30th in the NFL against the pass and 19th in run defense.
Analysis: The Seahawks have some injuries along their defensive line and are coming off of being blown out in back-to-back games. The Cardinals offense is nothing to write home about so hopefully Seattle will be able to get back on track in Week 10 against a team that has lost three in a row. Seattle's DST has the ability to create turnovers and record sacks, however, Fantasy owners may want to look at other options until they turn this thing around. Consider them a low-end No.2 option against Arizona in Week 10.
News: The Seahawks defense was gashed for 41 points on 487 total yards of offense in Week 9 against the Giants. The unit was on the field for 79 plays in the rout and allowed 35 points in the first half. They again were burned by the big play and had a hard time stopping anything the Giants did on offense. The unit did not record a sack, but did create a turnover in the 41-7 rout. Aaron Curry was able to strip Kevin Boss in the first quarter, stalling New York's opening drive. However, it was all down hill from there as the Giants would score on their next five possessions.
Analysis: Seattle was missing two starters on the defensive line and have now allowed over 450 yards of total offense in two straight weeks. The unit is clearly struggling at the moment and aren't being helped out by the offense, who are struggling to sustain any sort of drives. Seattle's DST has the ability to create turnovers and record sacks, however, Fantasy owners may want to look at other options until they turn this thing around. Seattle will face the Cardinals in Week 10. The unit played pretty well against Arizona the first time around, allowing just 10 points, while forcing three turnovers and recording two sacks.
News: The Seahawks defense will have their hands full trying to slow down the Giants in Week 9. New York is averaging 243 yards of total offense a game and have scored 103 points over the last three games. Seattle, who allowed 545 yards of offense in Week 8 against the Raiders, also lost DT Red Bryant for the season with a knee injury. The unit is ranked 8th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 21 sacks while forcing 13 turnovers.
Analysis: While Seattle's defense has been surprisingly good this season, the Raiders proved the unit still has major holes and can be exploited. The Giants are arguably the hottest team in football right now and have been clicking on all cylinders of late. Seattle is allowing nearly 270 passing yards a game and will have to try and slow down Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Fantasy owners may want to look at other options heading into Week 9.
News: The Seahawks placed DT Red Bryant on injured reserve Tuesday. He injured his knee in Week 8 against the Raiders and won't play again this season. Bryant had a career-high 18 tackles and one sack in 2010 and was considered a big reason for the team's success against the run. Bryant was hurt near the end of the first half on Sunday; in the second half the Raiders' running backs steamrolled the 'Hawks for 157 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
Analysis: Bryant's departure is bad news for the Seahawks. Brandon Mebane is expected to help fill in his spot, but unless the Seahawks get a quick fix there, they'll be in trouble. In fact, with the Giants and their powerful offense coming to Seattle this Sunday, there's a chance they could wilt further. Consider other options before going with the Seattle DST in Week 9.
News: The Seahawks were blown out in the Week 8 game at Oakland to the tune of 33-3. The defense was gashed by the big play against the Raiders, who had eight plays that went for more than 20 yards, including passes from QB Jason Campbell that went for 69 yards, 55 yards and 51 yards. RB Darren McFadden took a third quarter run for 41 yards on his way to a 111 yards in the game on 21 carries. The Seahwaks did not force a turnover and sacked Campbell just twice. They gave up 545 yards in the loss. "The line of scrimmage was theirs," coach Pete Carroll said.
Analysis: Going into the game, the Seahawks had the league's second best run defense (77.5 yards per game), but the Raiders surely helped the 'Hawks drop considerably in those rankings after they ran for 239 yards on Sunday. If its any consolation for owners, the Seahawks offense did not help the defense much by failing to convert on every third down attempt in the first three quarters. Seattle will try to figure things out before Week 9 when they face the Giants. In that game, they should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy defense after Sunday's poor showing.
News: The Seahawks defense is going into the Week 8 game at Oakland with the NFL's 3rd best run defense, allowing just 77.5 yards a game. The Raiders have the league's No. 3 running game led by Darren McFadden, who has 557 yards in just five games. The strength of the Seahawks run defense against the powerful Raiders run game could be countered by the teams' sub-par passing units. Oakland throws for less than 200 yards a game and Seattle gives up more than 260 yards each game. Something has got to give.
Analysis: This matchup is strength vs. strength and weakness on weakness. The slight advantage can go to the 'Hawks because of the Raiders QB situation. An official decision on who should start between Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski should be in by Friday according to Raiders coach Tom Cable. It looks like Campbell, who has gotten most of the reps with the first team in practice, will get the nod because of Gradkowski's injured shoulder. If that is the case, the Raiders will lean on the run even more than they already do, which could allow the Seahawks defense to buckle down and try to stop McFadden and backup Michael Bush. We like them as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 8.
News: The Seahawks entered Week 7 against the Cardinals with the No. 2 ranked rushing defense in the league but gave up Arizona's lone score on the ground. Seattle allowed RBs Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower to rush for a combined 133 yards, including Wells 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. But the Seahawks only gave up 132 passing yards in the 22-10 win. Rookie DB Earl Thomas recorded his fourth interception on Sunday and Arizona recorded two sacks and forced two fumbles in the victory.
Analysis: Despite allowing over 100 yards on the ground for the first time this season, the Seahawks DST played well in Week 7. DL Chris Clemons' sack forced Arizona's starter, Max Hall, from the game in the third quarter and Seattle controlled the game for the most part. They appear to be getting better as the season goes on and could be in for a big game against the Raiders in Week 8. Oakland's strength is running the ball so consider the Seahawks DST as a low-end No. 1 option for next week.
News: The Seahawks defense changed their philosophy this season and it has helped them become the second best run defense in the NFL. Head coach Pete Carroll moved 323-pound tackle Red Bryant to defensive end and switching from a "one-gap" philosophy where the defensive linemen try to penetrate through the offensive line and get up field, to a "two-gap" philosophy where the linemen hold the point of attack, read the play and then react to the ball carrier. The move has help them limit teams to just 70.4 yards rushing per game this season. Seattle will face off against a Cardinals offense in Week 7 that ranks 30th and 29th in rushing and passing, respectively.
Analysis: Seattle was ranked 24th in the league in total defense a year ago and 15th against the run. With the changes along the defensive line, the Seahawks find themselves with the second-ranked run defense in the NFL. Only the Steelers have done better. Although they rank dead last in the NFL against the pass, Arizona will counter with a rookie QB as their starter. Given their favorable matchup, consider the Seahawks DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 7 against Arizona.
News: The Seahawks DST, who looked bad against the Rams before their Week 5 bye, came out fresh on Sunday against the Bears and caused havoc in a Week 6 victory. Seattle sacked QB Jay Cutler six times and held Chicago to just 13 points and 307 yards.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST was racking up the Fantasy points in the first three games this season before looking ordinary against the Bills. While they didn't manage a turnover on Sunday, they were in Cutler's face all night and were unlucky not to force a pick. In Week 7, Seattle hosts the Cardinals, and owners in deeper leagues who have a bye-week or matchup problem might want to think about looking Seattle's way next week.
News: The Seahawks face the Bears in Week 6, and the Seattle DST will be coming off a bye and looking to bounce back from a disappointing Week 4 outing against the Rams. The Bears have one of the more anemic offenses in the league, but will have starting QB Jay Cutler back on Sunday, who threw three touchdowns against the Seahawks last season.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has been a Jekyll and Hyde unit so far this season with two huge weeks, a mediocre one and an awful one. There is a chance for them to do something decent this week though, thanks to a week of rest and the fact that Cutler is one big hit away from being sidelined with another concussion. Start them as a bye-week replacement option in deeper leagues if you need to.
News: The Seahawks DST, which came into Week 4 at St. Louis as the third-ranked defense in Fantasy play, allowed 349 yards and 20 points in a loss to the Rams. They did manage to record four sacks and an interception.
Analysis: The Seahawks have been all over the place this season and will take their Week 5 bye to figure out what they can do to find some consistency as a unit. When they return to action in Week 6 they will take a trip to Chicago, which isn't the easiest of matchups. For now, they should only be considered in deeper formats, especially as their offense doesn't help them out very much.
News: The Seahawks DST heads into Week 4 at the Rams as the second-highest scoring unit in standard scoring leagues behind the Steelers. The Rams, meanwhile, rank just 24th on offense and QB Sam Bradford has thrown five interceptions in three games.
Analysis: The Seahawks managed to rack up the points in Week 1 against the 49ers and Week 3 against the Chargers, but they got steamrolled by the Broncos in between and the jury is still out on this unit a little. However, if Steven Jackson (groin) can't go in Week 4, this turnover-producing Seahawks gang could well be worth a bye-week replacement flier in deeper formats.
News: Seattle went into Week 3 against San Diego with a game plan -- put pressure on Philip Rivers. The Seahawks walked away with four sacks and two interceptions off Rivers. They also recovered three fumbles, as this was the second straight game the Chargers offense had at least three turnovers. Rookie DB Earl Thomas had both intercepted both passes. The first one was tipped and Thomas ran it back into the red zone. The second sealed Seattle's win as he picked off the pass with 6 seconds left. "To make it as simple as you can: five turnovers ... two special teams touchdowns, that's a recipe for a loss," Rivers said. Leon Washington also ran wild on the Chargers as he scored on two kickoff returns, tying an NFL record. He might have gotten a third, but Washington slipped trying to make cut during a 33-yard return at the end of the third quarter. Seattle held San Diego to 89 yards rushing, but let Rivers throw for a career-high 455 yards. The passing mark also is the highest total ever for a Seahawks opponent. The previous high was 440 yards by another Charger, Dan Fouts.
Analysis: Seattle's defense did contain the running game, and although they let Rivers throw for a career high, still had a solid day. Causing five turnovers and recording four sacks is a good day at the office, then the special team's touchdowns are icing on the cake. With rookie QB Sam Bradford and the Rams next up, the Seahawks are an interesting DST option for Week 4. If Steven Jackson is out, Seattle's DST could be viewed as a low-end No. 1 option.
News: One of the keys for Seattle in its attempt to stop the Chargers this week will be the pass rush. In a win over San Francisco, the Seahawks hit Alex Smith 11 times and sacked him twice. In Sunday's loss in Denver, they hit Kyle Orton only once. Seattle might be without starting linebacker Leroy Hill after he suffered a strained right calf in last week's game. Hill, who had just finished serving a one-game suspension, was wearing a protective boot Monday. Seattle is allowing 259 yards through the year through two games and the Chargers offense is fourth in the league with 303 passing yards per game. Something will have to give in Week 3, and it could come down to pressure on Philip Rivers.
Analysis: The last time the Seahawks and Chargers faced, Rivers was held to 10 of 30 passing for 181 yards and two touchdowns. The biggest difference this time around is no Vincent Jackson, the recipient of both of his touchdown passes. Rivers completed a career-worst 33 percent of his passes in that contest. Fantasy owners should steer clear of Seattle's DST right now as they have an unfavorable matchup in Week 3. If they get to Rivers, they could be worth a look down the road.
News: Seattle's defense couldn't contain Denver's Kyle Orton and his receiving corps in Week 2. Orton threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. Denver converted 14 of 20 third-down chances against the Seahawks, leading coach Pete Carroll to say this: The defense was really poor today and we couldnt get them out of there. We played the run great but we couldnt get them off the field on third down." Carroll added that they had no pass rush, which led to all of the third-down conversions. We had a much more effective rush last time and we werent near the QB today much at all, coach Pete Carroll said. That makes it hard. The Seahawks sacked Orton once on the day and gave up 31 points.
Analysis: After having a solid Week 1, Seattle's defense looked plain bad in Week 2. They did contain Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter to a total of 70 yards, but both backs scored. With San Diego's high-powered offensive attack coming to town in Week 3, Fantasy owners should steer clear of Seattle's DST. Until they start forcing turnovers and putting pressure on the opposing team's quarterback, they won't be worth much in Fantasy leagues. Consider them a low-end No. 2 DST right now.
News: The Seahawks and their surprisingly formidable defense look to build on an impressive opener Sunday when they visit the Denver Broncos. "It's really exciting for our football team to take this next step," coach Pete Carroll said. "Coming out and putting a good game behind us was important, but it really doesn't mean anything now. Can we step back and meet the challenges again?" The Seahawks seem to have a good chance if their defensive front steps up again. Seattle's defense might get better with the return of linebacker Leroy Hill after serving a one-game league suspension for his arrest on a marijuana-possession charge in Georgia. "We're pleased to have him back and we're going to get him to play," Carroll said. "He's not coming back to sit, he's coming back to play."
Analysis: Seattle's defensive line was a major question entering the season, but Red Bryant, Brandon Mebane, Colin Cole and Junior Siavii helped limit two-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore to 38 yards on 17 carries. This week they'll have to deal with the young Knowshon Moreno and Denver's stable of backs. The defense, which ranked 24th and allowed an average of 368.0 yards last season, held San Francisco to 263 total yards and forced two turnovers - including Marcus Trufant's 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. Consider Seattle's DST as a low-end No. 2 start in Week 2.
News: The Seahawks defense came up big in Week 1 against the 49ers. After finishing 24th in total defense a season ago, Seattle was able to hold San Fransisco to just 263 total net yards and force two turnovers. Jordan Babineaux and Marcus Trufant each intercepted Alex Smith and the defense held the 49ers to six points on three possessions inside the red zone. Trufant picked off Smith to on the opening drive on the second half and returned it 32-yards for a touchdown to give Seattle a 21-6 lead. The Seahawks' defense also recorded two sacks.
Analysis: The defense was not suppose to be a strong point for Seattle this season, but they sure held their own on Sunday. While many think it was more a product of San Francisco being out of sync, they kept the 49ers out of the end zone all afternoon. Even more impressive than the two turnovers was the their red zone defense, stopping San Fransisco multiple times inside the 5-yard line. Despite their outstanding performance on Sunday, the Seahawks still have alot of holes on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary. We do not recommend using them during their Week 2 matchup at Denver.
News: The Seahawks welcome in division rival San Francisco during Week 1. The 49ers finished just 27th in total offense last season (290.8 ypg), but were able to put up 40 combined points over there two meetings. The Seahawks were ranked 24th in total defense (356.4 ypg), but really struggled stopping the pass, allowing 258.7 ypg. They drafted S Earl Thomas out of Texas and are led on defense by Red Bryant, Lofa Tatupu, Chris Clemmons and Aaron Curry.
Analysis: The Seahawks finished 15th in rushing defense last season, but their secondary was full of holes. The addition of Thomas will help some, but not enough to vault into the top 10 by any means. San Francisco is a much improved team on offense and could pose a lot of mismatches for Seattle's secondary. We do not recommend using them during Week 1.
News: First-year Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has been impressed in training camp with the starting defensive line of Red Bryant, Colin Cole, Brandon Mebane and Chris Clemons. "I really like what's going on up front with the first defense," Carroll told seattlepi.com. "Those guys are playing together really nicely at this point. We've done some things different scheme-wise to match up with our personnel. We're kind of liking what's going on there, but we'll see when we go up against someone else."
Analysis: Seattle ranked in the bottom 10 of defense in 2009, allowing 356.4 yards per game. The passing defense was a huge problem, allowing 245.4 yards per game (30th in the NFL), as Seattle couldn't get much pressure on the QB -- totaling just 28 sacks. The defensive line is one of the areas Seattle needs great improvement from heading into 2010. Carroll can say nice things about his defense all day, but until we see improvement in game situations, the Seahawks DST will be a risky Fantasy option.
News: The Seahawks spent five of their nine draft picks on defense in the NFL Draft. Seattle took S Earl Thomas in Round 1, CB Walter Thurmond in Round 4, DE E.J. Wilson in Round 4, S Kam Chancellor in Round 5 and DE Dexter Davis in Round 7.
Analysis: Thomas was clearly the best addition during the NFL Draft, but Wilson and Davis should help with the pass rush. Still, the Seahawks have a lot to prove before Fantasy owners can count on them. Consider the Seahawks DST a No. 2 Fantasy option, and they should only be used as a bye-week replacement this year.
News: The Seahawks selected safety Earl Thomas from Texas at No. 14 overall in the NFL Draft. The play-making Thomas, who has 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash, fills the Seahawks' most urgent need on defense. Seattle had just two safeties on the roster present for last week's minicamp. That trumped at least two trade offers the Seahawks got to move down, just before they took the first safety in an opening round since Kenny Easley in 1981. "He'll be as good as there is in the NFL at being able to cover wide receivers as well as slot receivers," coach Pete Carroll said, adding that Thomas goes into the lineup at free safety - for now opposite veteran holdover Jordan Babineaux.
Analysis: Thomas will help improve the secondary and should make the Seahawks DST better in 2010. Still, the Seahawks have a lot to prove before Fantasy owners can count on them. Consider the Seahawks DST a No. 2 Fantasy option, and they should only be used as a bye-week replacement this year.
News: The Seahawks announced that DE Patrick Kerney has chosen to retire, citing that his body can no longer handle the rigors of the NFL. Kerney has taken on shoulder and elbow injuries of late and had a torn chest muscle earlier in his career. He leaves the game with 82.5 career sacks. "Despite the desire to continue my career, I am retiring from professional football," Kerney said in a statement released by the team. "The toll that has been taken on my body will no longer allow me to train, and hence, perform at a level that is acceptable to me. It has been a privilege to work for two first-class organizations that are supported by passionate, inspirational fans. I cannot express enough gratitude to all who have supported me through my career."
Analysis: The Seahawks might have been counting on Kerney to help their pass rush in 2010 -- they're thin at that spot as it stands following this news and the trading of DE Darryl Tapp earlier this offseason. That's not good for the 'Hawks, whose DST isn't anything more than a low-end No. 2 option. Keep them off of rosters and possibly consider them as a one-week replacement when faced with a great matchup.
News: Looking to bolster their pass rush, the Philadelphia Eagles acquired defensive end Darryl Tapp from Seattle for defensive end Chris Clemons and the Eagles' fourth-round choice in next month's draft. Originally a second-round draft pick by Seattle in 2006, Tapp has 18 sacks, two interceptions, eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 65 games. Clemons played two seasons with Philadelphia after posting a career-high eight sacks in 2007, his only season with Oakland. He has 20 sacks in 59 career games.
Analysis: The move might give Clemons some playing time in Seattle, but the trade doesn't help the Seahawks much for this season. They remain an undesirable Fantasy DST only worth a look off waivers as a one-week replacement during the season.
News: The Seahawks officially named Pete Carroll as their head coach Monday. Carroll, who comes from the University of Southern California where he coached the past nine seasons after stops with the Jets and Patriots in the NFL, is expected to overhaul a team that has won nine games over the last two seasons. "We are excited to add Pete as our coach. He brings a great passion for winning and a positive attitude that is contagious," said CEO Tod Leiweke. "We now turn our full attention to the hiring process for a general manager. Our intended structure is for Pete and the new GM to work in a collaborative capacity on football matters."
Analysis: It will be interesting to see who he chooses as his defensive coordinator next season, especially since the Seahawks are closer to being good on that side of the ball than on the offensive side of the ball. As of now they're not expected to be a useful Fantasy DST in 2010.
News: The Seahawks have confirmed that Jim Mora Jr. has been fired from his head coaching position. The team has reportedly begun searching for a replacement already; they also have an opening at General Manager.
Analysis: Expect the Seahawks to begin a massive overhaul of their entire team, including the defense. They're not expected to be a useful Fantasy DST in 2010.
News: Seahawks DB Deon Grant is having wrist surgery and DE Patrick Kerney will undergo elbow surgery. The team announced Thursday that both veterans were due to have their operations later in the day. The 30-year-old Grant played the last six games with a cast over his left wrist. He said Dr. Carlton Keck, a specialist in Seattle, was to place pins in his wrist and reconstruct a torn ligament. The team expects Grant to be fully recovered by late April or May. The 33-year-old Kerney is having surgery to remove loose cartilage and bone fragments in his left elbow. The team considers the procedure routine and says Kerney's recovery time should be four to six weeks.
Analysis: Grant and Kerney have minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues heading into 2010, and the Seahawks DST should be considered a No. 2 option next year. The Seahawks need a lot of work on defense to become a viable starting option again in Fantasy leagues.
News: The Seahawks, who gave up 48 points last week at Green Bay, had a decent defensive performance Week 17 against the Titans, allowing 13 points on 304 yards. They recorded an interception and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST had a mostly disappointing season, having most of its success against the lowly Rams. Without a massive overhaul in the offseason, it'll be nothing more than a low-end matchups type in 2010 -- one that will go undrafted in most leagues.
News: The Seahawks defense had more than their hands full with the Packers offense on Sunday, getting blown out 48-10. The ground game was particularly hard for the Seahawks to defend as Ryan Grand led a rushing attack that gained 153 yards on 32 carries and scored five times. Aaron Rodgers, who was able to sit out the entire fourth quarter, went 12 for 23 passing for 237 yards and a touchdown. The defense failed to create a turnover in the game and sacked Rodgers only once.
Analysis: The Seattle defense has been poor in each of the past three weeks, all Seahawks losses. They face a potent Titans offense in Week 17 and could be in for another long day. Avoid the Seahawks DST in all formats Week 17.
News: The Seattle Seahawks were just dismal against the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday of Week 15. The Seahawks DST could not stop the Bucs as they racked up 339 yards in the 24-7 pounding. The Seahawks only managed to intercept Josh Freeman once in the game after Freeman had thrown eight interceptions in his previous two combined. Seattle did not manage a single sack on Freeman and the pick was their only turnover forced.
Analysis: We predicted that the Seahawks DST would be dismal against Houston in Week 14 but this was a new low for the unit. We cannot possibly recommend them as anything but a must-sit Fantasy option for Week 16 at Green Bay.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed 34 points and 450 yards to the Texans in a Week 14 loss. Seattle did at least manage a fumble recovery and an interception.
Analysis: You knew things might get ugly in Sunday with the Seahawks DST, and that's certainly what happened. Don't give up on the unit just yet though, as they'll come home to face the poor Buccaneers in Week 15. If you need a DST with a good matchup, you could do worse than the Seahawks.
News: The Seahawks didn't have an impressive defensive performance in Week 13 even though they held the visiting 49ers to 17 points on 356 yards. They recorded only one sack and forced just one turnover -- a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST can be useful in the right matchups, but it's usually an unspectacular unit not worth starting in most Fantasy leagues. Avoid using it against a good offense Week 14 at Houston.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed 17 points and 364 yards to the Rams in a Week 12 win, but redeemed themselves by tallying two interceptions and four sacks.
Analysis: Seattle has had a handful of quality performances this season, but they've mostly been unusable except when they've had obviously great matchups like they did in Week 12. They have an OK matchup in Week 13 vs. San Francisco, but there are better options out there.
News: The Seahawks DST was crushed by Brett Favre and the Vikings in Week 11, registering two sacks and nothing else. Favre threw four touchdowns on them and Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor totaled 155 rush yards.
Analysis: There's good news as the Seahawks DST will play at St. Louis in Week 12. That should mean that the Seattle defense will be useful against an improving but inept Rams offense. Consider them if you use waivers each week to find a DST.
News:Josh Wilson is unlikely to play Sunday at Minnesota because of a concussion, leaving the Seahawks without a starting cornerback against Brett Favre and the Vikings. Seattle coach Jim Mora said after Wilson missed his third consecutive practice Friday that there is only a slight chance he will play. Last weekend he banged his head into the leg of Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells and then the turf. Wilson returned to finish the game before being diagnosed with the concussion. Marcus Trufant, the other starting cornerback, says he was also "dinged" last weekend. He also returned to finish the game, then was diagnosed with a concussion. Trufant has practiced the last two days and Seattle expects him to start Sunday.
Analysis: The Vikings should have a field day throwing on the Seahawks DST. Keep them benched or off rosters in all leagues since they're unlikely to do well against Favre & Co.
News: The Seattle Seahawks' two starting cornerbacks have been diagnosed with concussions. Marcus Trufant and Josh Wilson didn't practice Wednesday, and Seahawks coach Jim Mora didn't specifically address their playing status for Sunday's game against Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. "We'll have a couple guys that might be limited (in practice), but nothing serious," Mora said.
Analysis: Trufant, a Pro Bowl selection in 2007, was injured against Arizona last weekend. He returned to the game. Wilson was injured in the same game when his head slammed off the leg of Beanie Wells and then the turf as Wilson tried to tackle the Cardinals' rookie running back in the second quarter. He also returned to play. Neither player is more than a low-end Fantasy DB when healthy. The Seahawks DST is not a recommended start for Week 11 going up against one of the NFL's best offenses.
News: The Seahawks allowed 21 second-half points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and blew a 7-point halftime lead during a 31-20 loss to the Cardinals in Week 10. Seattle actually held Arizona off the scoreboard in the first quarter and most of the second before the Cardinals managed 10 points in the final 5:30 of the first half. Arizona kept the momentum going in the second half and finished with 462 yards. Seattle failed to sack quarterback Kurt Warner and did not force one turnover.
Analysis: While David Hawthorne is making plays at middle linebacker, the Seahawks do sorely miss Lofa Tatupu, who is out for the season with injury. The fact they couldn't sack a quarterback like Warner, who holds onto the ball a long time, speaks volumes about their ability to pressure the quarterback. Seattle has lost its edge on defense and the Seahawks DST has become a low-end Fantasy option. They are not a recommended start for Week 11 against the Vikings.
News: The Seahawks defense was able to pick off five Matthew Stafford passes on Sunday in a Week 9 32-20 win over the Lions. David Hawthorne was responsible for two of the interceptions and also led the team in tackles with nine. Josh Wilson picked Stafford off late in the fourth quarter and took the INT to the house, 61 yards the other way. Deon Grant and Jordan Babineaux were responsible for the other two INTs. Babineaux and Patrick Kerney were able to sack Stafford as well, with Kerney forcing a fumble.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST was a solid pick-up for many Fantasy owners in Week 9 as the unit was facing a poor Lions offense. After falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter, the Seahawks defense really stymied the Lions the rest of the game. In Week 10, the Seahawks travel to Arizona to take on a potent Cardinals offense. The Seahawawks DST should only be considered a No. 2 Fantasy unit for that game.
News: The Seahawks DST did little Sunday at Dallas. They had two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery while allowing 38 points. Josh Wilson had three kickoff returns for 68 yards, and David Hawthorne had eight tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. Colin Cole had a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST should bounce back with a great game in Week 9 against Detroit. Consider the Seahawks a sleeper against the Lions.
News:Lofa Tatupu is the latest Seahawks star to go on the injured reserve list. A team spokesman said Seattle's three-time Pro Bowl LB is having surgery Thursday afternoon in Alabama to repair a torn left pectoral muscle. The defensive captain was injured in the first half of Seattle's loss to Arizona on Oct. 18 while trying to make a tackle. The 26-year-old Tatupu did not miss a game in his first 3.5 seasons in the NFL. He played through assorted injuries including concussions, strained groins and hamstrings and a broken thumb. Sunday's game at Dallas will be his third absence in less than 12 months.
Analysis: It's safe to release Tatupu in all IDP leagues this year. When healthy, Tatupu is a No. 2 Fantasy LB. Hopefully he can return in 2010 at 100 percent.
News: The Seahawks are taking advantage of their bye week to get healthier. Cornerback Marcus Trufant practiced Tuesday for the first time since injuring his lower back in late July. He says he hopes to play in Seattle's next game at Dallas in Week 8. Linebacker Leroy Hill also hopes to play at Dallas -- the $38 million outside linebacker practiced for the first time since he tore his groin in Seattle's opener Sept. 13. Hill says he now feels "perfect" following what he called the worst pain he's ever had. He thought his career may be over when he first got hurt.
Analysis: Both players will definitely help the Seahawks defense upon their return in Week 8. Still, the Seahawks DST isn't advised this week while they're on bye, nor in Week 8 when they play the Cowboys.
News: After shutting out the Jaguars in Week 5, the Seahawks couldn't make a repeat performance in a Week 6 loss to the Cardinals. Arizona posted 344 yards and 27 points. Seattle had two sacks -- both from Patrick Kerney -- one interception and one fumble recovery. About the only good thing they did was limit Arizona to 62 yards on the ground.
Analysis: To make matters worse in Week 6, Seattle lost Kerney to a groin injury and Lofa Tatupu to a shoulder injury that will keep him out the rest of the season. Tough loss for the Seahawks. Injuries have been a big reason why the Seattle defense has struggled at times in 2009. But when they have been healthy, Seattle has played up to its potential. We don't know what kind of shape they will be in Week 8 against the Cowboys when they come off the bye, but at least the Seattle defense will get a chance to rest in Week 7.
News: The Seahawks DST was able to hold the Jaguars scoreless Week 5 in a 41-0 blowout win. The defense was able to sack QB David Garrard five times in the game, forcing two fumbles. One of the fumbles was taken to the house by Nick Reed in the fourth quarter. Garrard managed only 188 yards through the air while backup Luke McCown added 2 yards more. The ground game was also bottled up, limiting Maurice Jones-Drew and the rest of the Jags' rushing attack to only 38 yards on 15 carries.
Analysis: This was the Seahawks' second shutout of the season, accounting for both of the team's wins through five games. The problem is that the defense got torched in the team's three losses. Seattle has a tough matchup against the Cardinals' high-powered aerial attack, making them again a low-end option against Arizona despite the shutout.
News: The Seahawks DST had a rough time of it as expected in Week 4, allowing 34 points and 431 to the Colts. Seattle did make an interception, but didn't record a sack or recover a fumble.
Analysis: Things have gone downhill quickly for the Seattle defense since they shut out the Rams in Week 1. In Week 5, they will face a hot Jaguars team and won't be worth using in any Fantasy leagues.
News: The Seahawks do have some good news heading into Week 4 at Indianapolis: starting linebacker Lofa Tatupu will return Sunday. The three-time Pro Bowl pick and leader of the defense missed the loss to the Bears in Week 3 with a hamstring injury sustained the week before. "We've still got guys who we're looking forward to getting back, but we're starting to fill up again, which is nice," head coach Jim Mora said, referring to the 13 starters who have been banged up the last two weeks.
Analysis: Tatupu's return is timely. The middle linebacker and defensive play caller must match wits with Peyton Manning, who wins many of his plays before they begin by outsmarting a defense. "He understands defenses almost as well as his offense. That's dangerous," Tatupu said. Mora has the Seahawks ditching their usual system against a no-huddle offense, which calls for Tatupu to receive hand signals from the sideline and then relay the call by voice to the rest of the defense before the snap. Mora knows Manning is capable of deciphering Tatupu's calls and adjusting his play call to beat Seattle's alignment. Tatupu is a great playmaker and must-start Fantasy LB when healthy. His return also helps the Seahawks DST, but we still like them as a No. 2 option going up against a very good Colts offense.
News:Jay Cutler's miserable Chicago debut two weeks ago became further forgotten when he completed all three of his passes on Sunday's decisive drive. The third was for 36 yards to Devin Hester with 1:52 remaining, rallying the Bears to a 25-19 victory in Week 3 over the depleted Seattle Seahawks. Seattle (1-2), playing without seven injured starters, led 19-17 with 5:17 remaining. Hester ran a slant route inside Travis Fisher, who was playing because Seattle was without starting cornerbacks Marcus Trufant and Josh Wilson. Safety Deon Grant tried to level Hester but nailed Fisher instead. With both Seahawks on the turf, Hester trotted in for the go-ahead score. Seattle, which led 13-0 at one point, allowed 318 yards while getting two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu was among the starters missing for Seattle. Also out on the defensive side were LeRoy Hill. The Seahawks looked good defensively for the most part until they tired out late in the game. If Seattle can ever get healthy, they could do some serious damage on defense. Until that happens, the Seahawks DST remains a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 4 against the Colts.
News: The Seahawks defense didn't have an awful performance Week 2 at San Francisco, but it gave up two long touchdown runs to Frank Gore, allowing 23 points on 379 total yards. It also had four sacks.
Analysis: The sacks redeemed an otherwise shaky performance for the Seahawks DST, which is a middle-of-the-road unit in Fantasy. It could have some big games playing in a weak division, but it isn't worth starting against the Bears in Week 3.
News: Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill is out until at least November. Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday that further tests on Hill's groin showed more extensive damage than first believed, including a partially torn muscle. Hill may need surgery. Mora says Hill will be out at least until Seattle plays at Dallas in Week 8.
Analysis: Hill was a fairly good contributor to the Seattle defense, so he'll be missed. Will Herring will take his spot in the lineup. Figure the Seahawks DST to remain a low-end starting option with this news. Meanwhile, Hill's IDP status takes a huge hit since he won't be usable until around Week 8. He's not worth owning, nor is Herring.
News: Seattle's defense had a great debut on Sunday in Week 1's matchup against the Rams. They allowed only 191 total yards passing and 77 yards rushing on 18 attempts. They did not intercept a pass but were able to recover a fumble and sack Marc Bulger three times. Head coach Jim Mora said Lofa Tatupu and fellow LB Leroy Hill, who left in the first half with a groin injury, apparently have minor injuries and stayed out as a precaution.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense was impressive on Sunday but keep in mind that they were going up against an inept St. Louis offense. They should have a more difficult time in Week 2 at San Francisco as they'll be playing on the road and will have more quality receivers to cover. They remain a low-end option despite a good game to start things off. Tatupu and Hill's injuries shouldn't keep them out of the lineup Week 2.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have signed safety Lawyer Milloy to a one-year contract, bringing the veteran back to the area where he grew up. The team made an official announcement Sunday, one day after cutting Brian Russell, who started at safety for two seasons. Milloy grew up in Tacoma, Wash., and played for the University of Washington before entering the NFL in 1996 with the New England Patriots. He played seven seasons there and three more with Buffalo, before spending the last three years in Atlanta.
Analysis: The 13-year veteran has started 196 of 202 career games. He will team with veteran Deon Grant and new cornerback Ken Lucas in Seattle's revamped secondary. The Seahawks finished last in the league in pass defense in 2008. Milloy will play plenty with the Seahawks, but won't be anything more than a bye-week replacement option in IDP leagues. The Seahawks DST is also a low-end option.
News: With Pro Bowl CB Marcus Trufant a question mark for the start of the season, the Seahawks might be forced to rely on Ken Hamlin, Josh Wilson and Kelly Jennings as their top trio of cornerbacks to begin the season. Jennings, the Seahawks' first-round pick in the 2006 draft, always seemed to be running stride-for-stride with a receiver only to have the ball fall into the receiver's hands while he fell to the ground, beaten yet again. Wilson, the team's top selection in the second round of the 2007 draft, was fifth on the team in tackles and had four interceptions starting opposite Trufant. But the 5-foot-9 corner struggled to keep the ball out of the hands of bigger receivers like Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. "We've obviously come up with a number of different plans and scenarios that we'll employ and use as time goes on based on who we've got," defensive backs coach Tim Lewis said. "We haven't practiced with Marcus just yet. Kelly has done a fantastic job in his role. Josh has done a fantastic job in his role in filling in for (Trufant), and Lucas has done a good job of playing the right corner, so we feel very solid about that and our top three corners."
Analysis: Seattle's defensive line has looked great this preseason, but their secondary is a big question mark. They need Trufant back and healthy so they can properly defend against their opponents. The Seahawks DST is at best a No. 2 option Draft Day.
News:Aaron Curry kept the Seattle Seahawks waiting for more than a week before showing up at training camp. But the team isn't going to delay the professional debut of the No. 4 overall pick. On the day Seattle's most tenured star, Walter Jones, returned to practice for the first time since July 31, coach Jim Mora said Thursday that Curry will see extensive playing time in Saturday's exhibition opener against San Diego, perhaps the most of any prospective Seattle starter. After first saying he wasn't going to make public how long some of his starters would play, Mora said that Curry likely will play into the third quarter and be shifted all over the defense. Curry will be used both at linebacker, and lineup at right end to give the Seahawks an opportunity to see his pass rush skills in action. "You know, if there's one thing that I would look for is watch Aaron Curry and see how he rushes as an end. We're going to find out a little bit, you know? I'm excited to see it," Mora said. "There's no sense in waiting."
Analysis: Aside from Curry, Seattle will get its first chance to see a re-tooled defensive line with Cory Redding at end and Colin Cole at tackle, joining Brandon Mebane and Patrick Kerney. Kerney returned to practice on Thursday after missing a couple of days and Mora said Kerney would be a game-time decision on Saturday. Curry could be a big factor as a rookie, so take him as a No. 3 Fantasy LB Draft Day with room to improve. Moreover, he's worth a middle-round choice in dynasty/keeper leagues and a first-round pick in rookie-only drafts. He's got a shot to be productive for many, many years. As for the Seahawks defense, they have a lot of ground to make up after a disappointing 2008 that was marred by a fair share of injuries. The Seahawks DST is at best a No. 2 option Draft Day.
News: After his release from the Panthers, CB Ken Lucas re-joined the Seahawks, signing a contract with them. He's expected to compete for a starting job with the club. LB Leroy Hill is also back with Seattle after the team cut him from the franchise tag they placed on him. He signed a contract for less money and will also battle to retain his starting gig.
Analysis: The Seahawks' defensive makeover continues, now with a retro look. Hill solidifies an incredible linebacking corps that includes Lofa Tatupu and rookie Aaron Curry, and the defensive line added DT Cory Redding and should get back a healthy Patrick Kerney before the start of the year. Lucas' return to the club helps the secondary add depth as well. But even with these additions, play it safe and consider them a No. 2 DST worth drafting late only in the deepest of Fantasy Football leagues.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have rescinded their franchise tag on outside LB Leroy Hill, making him a free agent. A team spokesman confirmed the surprising move Sunday, a day after the team made Wake Forest star OLB Aaron Curry the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft. It gives Seattle salary cap space of $8.3 million - the value of the guaranteed contract for 2009 the team was obligated to offer Hill as its franchise player. Curry is expected to get at least $25 million guaranteed in his new contract. Saturday, Seahawks president and GM Tim Ruskell said he was still in negotiations for a long-term deal with Hill. Coach Jim Mora marveled after selecting Curry that the team's defense now has, along with Lofa Tatupu, "three good, young linebackers who are all impact-type players and it is an exciting group. It will be fun to watch them grow together."
Analysis: Hill could still return to the Seahawks, but keep an eye on where he ends up to determine his Fantasy value. No matter where Hill plays, he will remain a decent Fantasy LB in IDP leagues. The Seahawks DST would be better off with Hill and Curry on the same roster because you can never have enough standout linebackers.
News: Detroit acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson on Saturday from the Seattle Seahawks for defensive tackle Cory Redding and a fifth-round pick in next month's NFL draft. Both players must pass physicals to complete the trade. The Lions gave Redding a seven-year contract worth nearly $50 million two years ago when they slapped the franchise tag on him after he had a career-high eight sacks. But Redding had only one sack in 2007 and three last season as a team leader of the NFL's first 0-16 season. Seattle expects him to fill its need for a hard-to-move run stopper in the middle. "Cory Redding is a guy we've had our eye on for some time," Ruskell said. "We liked him coming out of Texas because of his versatility to play inside and out and also because of the type of person he is. This gives us another big, physical presence along the defensive line and someone we can play at multiple positions."
Analysis: The Seahawks' defensive makeover continues with this deal. Obviously, they still have a good linebacker corps with Leroy Hill (who is franchised) and Lofa Tatupu, and Redding should help those guys move a little easier around the line of scrimmage, especially in the wake of losing DT Rocky Bernard. Play it safe and consider them a No. 2 DST worth drafting late only in the deepest of Fantasy Football leagues.
News: The Seahawks franchised LB Leroy Hill on Thursday, effectively guaranteeing him a one-year salary of $8.3 million, the average salary of the top-five highest paid players at his position. He can still shop himself around to other clubs but would force the team that signs him to give Seattle two first-round picks as compensation if the club refuses to match the new offer.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST is expected to have a makeover among the coaches (defensive coordinator John Marshall is gone and Jim Mora is the new head coach), but there's no doubt that the club has a lot of talent. Play it safe and consider them a No. 2 DST worth drafting late only in the deepest of Fantasy Football leagues.
News: The Seahawks allowed 457 yards of offense and 34 points in Week 17 in Arizona. They forced two turnovers and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Seahawks had an all-around miserable season and that included a lot of defensive struggles. They gave up a ton of yards and points this season and were not a very opportunistic defense. They are going to have some work to do this offseason and will have to prove productive next season before they can be a trusted unit in Fantasy again.
News: The Seahawks DST only allowed the Jets to score three points in snowy conditions in Seattle. The Seahawks limited the Jets to only 265 yards with 150 net yards passing and 115 net yards rushing. Three points is far and away the fewest points allowed by this defense that also picked off Brett Favre twice.
Analysis: Don't be fooled by this solid performance out of Seattle. The weather helped them out a whole lot. Neither team did much in terms of offense. They cannot be trusted Week 17 at Arizona.
News: Despite having a great matchup Week 15 at St. Louis, the Seahawks defense had a mostly unimpressive performance, allowing 20 points on 342 yards with one sack. It did, however, get a touchdown on a recovered fumble by Jordan Babineaux. Marcus Trufant also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST had piled up some sacks recently, so you'd think it'd get more than one against the lowly Rams. Clearly, you can't trust it even in the best of matchups, so leave it on waivers for Week 16 against the Jets.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed 24 points and 344 yards to the Patriots in a Week 14 loss. They made three sacks, but did not record a turnover.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has been pretty much a non-factor most of the season, which is disappointing because they came into the year as a potential No. 1 unit. They might have a chance to put up some decent totals in Week 15 at St. Louis, but you won't want to rely on them in your Fantasy playoffs.
News: The Seattle DST gave up 34 points Thursday at Dallas with only one interception and no sacks. Marcus Trufant got the interception. Justin Forsett had one kickoff return for 20 yards and two punt returns for 12 yards, and Josh Wilson had six kickoff returns for a 21.7 yard average.
Analysis: The Seattle DST has been a disappointment all season. They are not worth using in Week 14 against New England.
News: Washington defeated the Seahawks in Seattle in Week 12 by the final margin of 20-17. The Seahawks DST allowed 386 total yards for the Redskins and only forced one turnover which came on a Ladell Betts fumble. Seattle sacked QB Jason Campbell twice in the game as Julian Peterson and Darryl Tapp each had one.
Analysis: The Seahawks had one of the most feared defenses in the NFL in 2007, but it has been a totally different story in 2008. They are now one of the league's worst defenses and their special teams is also struggling without Nate Burleson. Until Seattle can turn around their season, consider the Seahawks DST a less than desireable Fantasy option heading into Week 13 on Thursday at Dallas.
News: The Cardinals ran up 458 yards and 26 points in a Week 11 win against the Seahawks. The only bright spots for the Seahawks defense came when they shutout the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too little too late. Seattle forced three turnovers (one interception, two fumble recoveries) and sack QB Kurt Warner twice.
Analysis: The Seahawks had one of the most feared defenses in the NFL in 2007, but it has been a totally different story in 2008. They are now one of the league's worst defenses and their special teams is also struggling without Nate Burleson. Until Seattle can turn around their season, consider the Seahawks DST a less than desireable Fantasy option heading into Week 12 against the Redskins.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed 21 points and 361 yards to the Dolphins in Week 10, but pleased their owners when Jordan Babineaux returned an interception for a touchdown. The Seahawks also had two sacks.
Analysis: The Seahawks did better than expected against Miami, but things get a lot tougher in Week 11 when Seattle hosts Arizona. While touchdowns are always nice for DSTs, you really shouldn't use the Seahawks in Week 11 unless you have no other choice in deeper leagues.
News: Seahawks defensive end Patrick Kerney is having surgery this week in Alabama on a previously repaired left shoulder. Holmgren said Seattle's top pass rusher could miss either a couple of weeks or the rest of this season.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has already been a disaster for much of the 2008 season. With their flight across the country to Miami coming in Week 10, expect them to struggle against the Dolphins. Consider other options before finalizing your Week 10 lineup.
News: Seattle recorded a touchdown on their first drive Week 9 against the Eagles and the defense even managed to hold Philadelphia off the scoreboard in the first quarter despite the absence of Lofa Tatupu (groin) and Patrick Kerney (shoulder). However, it quickly went downhill after that has Philadelphia scored 26 unanswered points in a win. Seattle allowed 419 yards, including 347 through the air. Seattle got just one sack and one interception.
Analysis: Even when Kerney and Tatupu have been healthy this season, the Seattle defense just hasn't been very good at times. They have pretty much packed it up in 2008 and the Seahawks DST remains a bad Fantasy option heading into Week 10. Seattle hosts Miami next week.
News: Pro Bowl defensive end Patrick Kerney is out indefinitely and getting a second look at what's wrong with his surgically repaired shoulder. It's the latest in an epidemic of injuries for the teetering Seahawks. Coach Mike Holmgren said Friday morning on his radio show that Kerney is returning to Alabama to see Dr. James Andrews. Andrews is the surgeon who repaired torn labrum cartilage in Kerney's left shoulder after last season. The Seahawks' top pass rusher re-injured the shoulder in last weekend's win at San Francisco. Holmgren told KIRO he hoped to know when - or if - Kerney can play again this season by Tuesday. Darryl Tapp and rookie Lawrence Jackson will start at ends in Sunday's game against Philadelphia. No immediate word was given on the status of LB Lofa Tatupu.
Analysis: Facing a quality offense like the Eagles, there is no room to start the underachieving Seahawks DST in Fantasy play in any league. Keep them out of lineups. Sleeper DSTs for Week 9 include the Browns, Cardinals, Falcons and Raiders.
News: The Seahawks DST struggled Sunday at Tampa Bay with one sack, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. RB Justin Forsett (two punt returns for 36 yards and one kickoff return for 24 yards) and DB Josh Wilson (four kickoff returns for 146 yards) led the Seahawks on special teams.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has played poorly this year. The unit does have a good matchup in Week 8 at San Francisco but is only worth using as a bye-week replacement.
News: A week after allowing 44 points to the Giants in New York, Seattle returned home to give up 27 points and 313 yards of offense in Week 6 vs. Green Bay. They forced one turnover and sacked QB Aaron Rodgers twice.
Analysis: The Seahawks have allowed at least this many points in four of five games. They have not been able to keep teams out of the end zone and have also given up a good amount of yards both in the air on the ground. Add to it the fact that they don't have a very good return game and don't get to the quarterback much and you've got a pretty low-end Fantasy defense. They can be useful in larger leagues when the matchup is good and they'll face a middle-of-the-road offense in Week 7 at Tampa Bay.
News: Musing over whether Aaron Rodgers will practice. Mystery over whether the quarterback is taking painkilling injections. Marveling over his ability to play. All that may not matter on Sunday, because the Packers have their own remedy for Rodgers' sprained throwing shoulder -- one Seattle knows too well. "They still have Ryan Grant," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. The last time these teams met, Grant tromped through a Wisconsin blizzard for a Green Bay playoff-record 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns in a 42-20 win. "It should give you confidence," Grant said of that game, while finally healthy after a hamstring injury that has helped limit him to 269 yards rushing and no touchdowns in five games. "But at the same time, this is a matter of now."
Analysis: Yet the now is in Grant's favor, too. Seattle's undersized defense with 11 returning starters, including four Pro Bowl players, just got trampled by Brandon Jacobs. The Giants' 264-pound bull ran through missed tackles for 136 yards and two scores on just 15 carries last week as New York gave Holmgren his worst loss in 17 seasons as a head coach, 44-6. "Yeah, absolutely. The way we gave up yards against the run last week, it's going to be a fire burning until we put it out," said defensive end Patrick Kerney, one of Seattle's frustrated Pro Bowlers. The Seattle DST has potential to be a viable Fantasy option, but until they clamp down on defense, they remain a risky option.
News: The Seahawks allowed 523 yards of total offense and 44 points in a Week 5 drubbing at the hands of the Giants. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: This was one of the worst overall defenses performances of the season. The Seahawks gave up over 200 rushing yards and were picked apart in the air by Eli Manning for 200-plus passing yards in the first half. Despite all this, they remain a viable Fantasy unit when facing favorable matchups. In Week 6 vs. Green Bay, that's not the case.
News: When the Seahawks travel to New York to play the Giants in Week 5, they will not have to deal with their top receiver Plaxico Burress. He will not be active due to a team-imposed suspension. Domenik Hixon will start at receiver along with Amani Toomer.
Analysis: Hixon has some big play ability, but he's obviously no Plaxico Burress. His absence lessens New York's passing offense and could allow Seattle to key in on New York's tough running game. The Giants have had good play from their offensive line to date so far, though, and Eli Manning has thrown just one interception in three games. So despite Plaxico being out, consider the Seahawks defense no more than a bye week replacement option in Week 5.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed only 13 points and 240 yards to the Rams in a Week 3 victory. They recorded one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: Seattle's DST came into this season as one of the most-hyped units in the league, and after a slow opening game they've picked things up over the last couple of weeks. They remain a solid No. 1 DST in all leagues, especially in such a weak division. The Seahawks are off in Week 4, however, so you'll need to find a bye-week replacement for them.
News: Seattle's defense allowed 33 points in an overtime loss to San Francisco on Sunday in Week 2. Still, the Seahawks DST was pretty impressive. They may have allowed 365 total yards of offense against them, but Seattle sacked Niners QB J.T. O'Sullivan a total of eight times. Patrick Kerney and rookie Lawrence Jackson each had two. On top of that, the Seahawks DST found the end zone when Craig Terrill recovered a fumble and took it 10 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: Seattle may have allowed a lot of yards and points but they sure made O'Sullivan feel uncomfortable while sitting on his backside. That, plus the touchdown, mean the Seahawks DST earned their tag as a low-end No. 1 defense. We implore you to start them next week against the lowly St. Louis Rams.
News: The Seahawks DST, suggested by many as a No. 1 option in 2008, gave up 338 yards and 34 points to the Bills in a Week 1 loss on Sunday. They made one sack and did not record an interception.
Analysis: Even with a healthy Lofa Tatupu, the Seahawks really struggled in a wet Buffalo on Sunday. They will get a chance to redeem themselves in Week 2 at home against the brutal 49ers. If they can't come up with a decent performance in that game, then you might need to start worrying about their status as a No. 1 DST.
News: The Seahawks allowed the Chargers to score on a 5-play, 69-yard drive with 2:30 left in Monday's preseason game to cut the lead to 17-16 after Jacob Hester's 1-yard touchdown run. San Diego then took the lead for good on a 2-point conversion from Billy Volek to Malcom Floyd. Seattle limited San Diego to 298 yards, including 130 on the ground. They sacked the quarterback once and forced one turnover (fumble). On a sour note, LB Lofa Tatupu did not return to the lineup Monday after injuring his knee in the second quarter.
Analysis: The Seahawks can ill-afford to lose their All-Pro linebacker, especially this close to the regular season. Tatupu had 109 tackles, one sack, four interceptions and three forced fumbles last season. He has had 100-plus tackles in his first three seasons and hasn't missed a game. He passes as a viable No. 1 Fantasy LB when healthy. If he is lost for a significant period, the Seahawks DST would drop some, but they still would likely pass as a No. 1 option.
News: Seahawks LB Lofa Tatupu did not return to the lineup Monday against the Chargers after injuring his knee in the second quarter. Tatupu had six tackles (four solo) and now has nine tackles in the preseason.
1 option.
News: Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Trufant and the Seahawks have agreed to a $50.2 million, six-year contract that runs through 2013. Agent Doug Hendrickson said the deal includes $20 million in guarantees, making him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. The Seahawks had designated Trufant as their franchise player for this year. "All along, he never wanted to leave Seattle," Hendrickson said.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST did not disappoint in 2007, thanks in part to Trufant, totaling 45 sacks, 23 fumble recoveries, 20 interceptions and five total touchdowns (three on special teams). Seattle was helped by big years from DE Patrick Kerney and Trufant, and by a weak NFC West division that featured awful seasons from the Rams and 49ers. The Seahawks will still have a good DST in 2008. Ultimately figure the Seahawks to be worthy of a late-round pick to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in this summer's drafts even though the NFC West is improving.
News: The Seahawks DST did not disappoint in 2007, totaling 45 sacks, 23 fumble recoveries, 20 interceptions and five total touchdowns (three on special teams). Seattle was helped by big years from DE Patrick Kerney and CB Marcus Trufant, and by a weak NFC West division that featured awful seasons from the Rams and 49ers.
Analysis: The Seahawks will still have a good DST in 2008, but it will be especially solid if Trufant, an unrestricted free agent, returns to the team. Ultimately figure the Seahawks to be worthy of a late-round pick to be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in this summer's drafts.
News:D.J. Hackett's 20-yard touchdown put Seattle up 19-14 in the fourth quarter of a Wild Card game against the Redskins, but two touchdowns by the Seattle defense put the exclamation point on the 35-14 win. The first came on a 78-yard interception return by Marcus Trufant and then Jordan Babineaux returned an interception 57 yards for a score with 30 seconds left in the game. The Redskins managed just 319 total yards. Seattle's leading tackler was Leroy Hill with 13 (11 solo), followed by Lofu Tatupu with 12 (six solo) and Julian Peterson with 10 (six solo). Seattle got sacks from Hill, Peterson and Craig Terrill.
Analysis: Seattle put up a nice defensive effort against Todd Collins and the Redskins. They will have a little more trouble with the Packers in the divisional playoff round, but the Seattle DST is still a decent low-end option. Hill, Peterson and Tatupu are all solid Fantasy LB in postseason formats. Trufant is also a solid Fantasy DB, while Babineaux is more off a low-end option.
News: The Seattle DST had two sacks and no interceptions or fumbles Sunday at Atlanta.
Analysis: Look for the Seahawks to bounce back in the playoffs. The DST should be considered a No. 1 option in all leagues.
News: The Seahawks have clinched the No. 3 seed in the NFC. That means nothing they do in Atlanta will change their first-round home date against the NFC's final wild-card entrant, with a potential second-round game at second-seeded Green Bay. Coach Mike Holmgren prefers to play his starters through the end of the season to carry continuity and sharpness into the postseason, but he admits to being conflicted. "We haven't made any decisions yet about how we're going to play the game," Holmgren said Monday. The debate of whether to play or preserve the veterans is so deep, Holmgren will be reconvening the coaching staff late on Christmas morning through midday to set a plan. The players, meanwhile, get the holiday off. "My inclination right now is that we're going to keep playing and hopefully keep our momentum up a little bit," Holmgren said.
Analysis: At this point, expect at least one half of action from Matt Hasselbeck, Shaun Alexander, Deion Branch, Bobby Engram and the premier members of the Seahawks DST. Facing the Falcons should result in nominal statistics (but not great numbers) for these normally quality Fantasy players. We should know more about the Seahawks' plans as the week develops.
News: The Seattle defense had a field day Week 16 against the Ravens as rookie QB Troy Smith made his first career start. Seattle held the rookie to 199 passing yards, and while they didn't force an interception, they made the rookie fumble twice. Seattle also forced Mike Anderson to fumble, and LeRoy Hill then picked up the loose ball and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Baltimore managed 293 yards and Seattle came away with two sacks.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST came through for Fantasy owners Week 16 after a so-so outing Week 15 against the Panthers. Seattle doesn't have much to play for Week 17 against the Falcons as they have already punched a ticket to the playoffs. Atlanta will be out to prove something, so consider the Seahawks DST a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Aside from holding third-string QB Matt Moore and the Panthers to 208 passing yards, 114 rush yards and 13 points, the Seahawks DST wasn't responsible for any sacks, interceptions or fumble recoveries in Week 15 at Carolina.
Analysis: Not what we expected from the Seahawks DST against a third stringer. Next week, they take on a depleted and deflated Baltimore team at home, one which might be starting rookie Troy Smith at quarterback. Despite their horrible outing in Week 15, consider the Seahawks DST a worthwhile option in that game vs. Baltimore.
News: ESPN reports that Matt Moore is expected to start for Carolina in Week 15 vs. Seattle. Vinny Testaverde has "general soreness" and isn't expected to be ready to start.
Analysis: No one is starting Moore or Testaverde, but plenty of people are looking at starting Steve Smith. Forget about it -- Moore won't be a key to his success this week. Keep all Panthers QBs and WRs benched in Week 15. The Seattle DST, however, is now a must-start.
News: The Cardinals had to earn every one of their 21 points Week 14 against the Seahawks because Seattle was relentless in their defensive pursuit. Arizona managed 355 yards, but QB Kurt Warner was sacked five times -- including three by Patrick Kerney -- and threw five interceptions -- including three by Marcus Trufant, who also returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown. To top it off, Seattle earned a safety on a botched punt by Mitch Berger.
Analysis: Despite the massive amount of yards, the Seahawks turned in an outstanding performance against the Cardinals. The five interceptions were a thing of beauty. Seattle has a top 15 defense and hope to feast on the Panthers Week 15. Consider the Seahawks DST a viable Fantasy start.
News: The Seahawks DST hosts the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14. Arizona's offense ranks 16th in the NFL, including 11th through the air and 25th on the ground.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST ranks 13th in total defense and they have allowed just seven passing touchdowns all season. Start them in all Fantasy formats for this matchup.
News: Thanks to great play by LB Lofa Tatupu, the Seattle DST totaled a sack and four interceptions at Philadelphia in Week 13.
Analysis: Seattle's DST hosts Arizona in Week 14, a team that might be without its starting wide receivers. If that's the case, then Seattle's DST is worth a look as a low-end No. 1 option in Week 14.
News: The Seahawks DST will travel to Philadelphia in Week 13 to face the Eagles' sixth-ranked offense (12th in the air and on the ground).
Analysis: The Seahawks DST ranks 11th in total defense, including 14th against the pass and the run. We recommend starting them against the Eagles, who have struggled offensively recently. They have allowed 3 sacks this season.
News: The Seahawks DST had four sacks and two interceptions Sunday at St. Louis. Nate Burleson also had two kickoff returns for 51 yards and six punt returns for a 10.7-yard average. And he fumbled on special teams. Josh Wilson also had an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST played well against the Rams and will look to continue playing well at the Eagles in Week 13. Consider the Seahawks DST a low-end No. 1 option.
News: The Seahawks DST travels to St. Louis to face the Rams on Sunday in Week 12. The Rams are better with a healthy Marc Bulger and Stephen Jackson, although they are still ranked just 27th in total offense.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST is ranked sixth in total defense, but we're not recommending starting this unit in leagues with 12 or fewer teams.
News: The Seahawks pulled out a win Week 11 against the Bears, but not before the defense allowed 345 yards and 23 points. They did have some highlights in the game that included five sacks of Rex Grossman and a crucial fumble recovery that setup the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter. The defense did not pick off any passes.
Analysis: The Seahawks rank 19th in defense coming into Week 11, but they only were allowing about 17 points per game. The ranking doesn't do the unit any justice. The Seahawks will look to turn in a solid performance Week 12 against the Rams and a makeshift offensive line. Treat the Seahawks DST as a viable Fantasy option.
News: Against a seemingly inept 49ers offense, the Seahawks defense pitched the third shutout of the NFL season Week 10 at home, allowing a measly 173 yards. It recorded three sacks and recovered two fumbles. The Seahawks special teams, meanwhile, picked up only 25 yards.
Analysis: The question, of course, is whether the Seahawks defense is really that good or the 49ers offense really that bad. We say the latter, though the Seahawks DST isn't a slouch either. It still has a good matchup Week 11 against the Bears, particularly if Rex Grossman starts at quarterback, so keep it active.
News: Seattle hosts San Francisco in an NFC West battle in Week 10 Sunday. The Niners rank last in the NFL in total offense (last in the passing game and 26th on the ground). They have allowed 28 sacks so far this year.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST should be able to tee off and tally a ton of points against this Niners offense. Seattle ranks 17th in total defense, and they have 23 sacks on the year. Start the Seahawks DST in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Seahawks defense didn't have a standout game at Cleveland in Week 9. It allowed 33 points on 428 yards in a loss, picking up one interception and zero sacks. The Seahawks special teams, meanwhile, picked up 194 yards and had a 94-punt return from Nate Burleson in the second quarter.
Analysis: The Burleson touchdown salvaged an otherwise miserable day for the Seahawks DST. Fortunately, it has a great matchup Week 10 against the 49ers, so forget this poor performance and keep it active.
News: The Seattle defense is ranked 13th in total D, including 16th against the pass and 13th against the run. They travel to Cleveland to face a surprising Browns offense that is ranked sixth in the NFL (ninth through the air and 14th on the ground).
Analysis: The Seahawks DST should be considered this week only if you are in a league larger than 12 teams. They have 23 sacks this season, but the Browns have only given up 13 so far.
News: Seattle is on a bye for Week 8, but they have been a very good unit over their past three games, forcing 10 sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Seattle travels to play Cleveland in Week 9, which is normally a great matchup -- except the Browns rank seventh in total offense. Consider this DST a decent low-end No. 1 unit, mostly because they have an excellent return game and they play in a weak division.
News: The Seahawks obliterated Rams QB Marc Bulger in Week 7, taking him down on seven sacks while forcing him to commit five turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles). Their defense allowed six points on 221 yards while their special teams gained 176 yards, including 91 on a third-quarter touchdown return for Nate Burleson.
Analysis: Huge day for the Seahawks DST. Of course, it benefited from facing the Rams patchwork offensive line, which no doubt committed to the seven sacks and probably contributed to the five turnovers as well. Still, the Seahawks DST remains a low-end No. 1 option in Fantasy. The Seahawks have a bye in Week 8 before visiting Cleveland in Week 9.
News: Seattle will host St. Louis in a Week 7 matchup on Sunday. The Rams offense ranks 29th in the NFL, and they are scoring just 12.2 points per game. The Rams have allowed 17 sacks, to go with a league-high 12 interceptions.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST ranks 19th in total defense (19th against the pass and 18th against the run). They have 16 sacks and five interceptions this year. Consider them a solid starting unit against such a weak offense in Week 7.
News: The Seattle Seahawks DST allowed 28 points and 367 total yards in Week 6 against a New Orleans offense which suddenly came alive in the game. The Seahawks defense also accounted for just one fumble recovery, no sacks and no interceptions.
Analysis: The Seahawks will look for better results in Week 7 against a Rams offense which might be without RB Steven Jackson and/or QB Marc Bulger. Despite the poor game against the Saints, the Seahawks might be a decent play against the banged up Rams.
News: The Saints travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks DST in Week 6. New Orleans' offense ranks 22nd in total offense this year, with a 12th-ranked passing game and a 28th-ranked running game. But Drew Brees has thrown an NFL-high nine interceptions. However, the Saints have only allowed four sacks this year, which is the third-lowest number in the NFL.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST ranks 19th in total defense (17th against the pass and 20th against the run). Consider them a decent start against the struggling Saints for Week 6. The Seahawks also have 16 sacks which ranks them fourth in the NFL.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed 21 points and only got three sacks against Pittsburgh on Sunday from Julian Peterson, Lofa Tatupu and Ellis Wyms. Nate Burleson had four punt returns for 40 yards, and Ben Obomanu had three kickoff returns for 66 yards.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST will bounce back in Week 6 against the Saints. Consider them a decent start against New Orleans.
News: This Sunday will be a Super Bowl rematch between Pittsburgh and Seattle at Heinz Field in the Steel City.
Analysis: The Steelers' offense ranks third in the rushing game this season, with 168 yards per game, and they'll likely exploit Seattle in that fashion. The Seahawks rank 13th against the rush and they are 17th overall. Use them in larger leagues this week against a tough offense.
News: The Seahawks DST had a great day against the 49ers in Week 4, allowing only three points while tallying six sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Seahawks might be another low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 5 when they play at the Steelers, who found yards tough to come by against the Cardinals in Week 4.
News: The Seahawks DST will get to face a struggling San Francisco offense in Week 4. The Niners have scored just 17.7 points per game, which ranks them 21st in the NFL behind the Jets. The Seahawks are ranked 26th in the NFL in total defense, 30th in passing and 16th in rushing defense.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has a decent matchup this week, considering that Alex Smith and his receivers just haven't connected yet. Consider starting them against good matchups like this one if you don't have any of the elite units.
News: The Seattle DST totaled two interceptions, two fumble recoveries (one forced) and two sacks vs. Cincinnati in Week 3.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense will have its hands full with Frank Gore and the Niners next week. They corralled the run against Cincy, so give them a look at San Francisco in Week 4.
News: The Bengals have the No. 3 scoring offense in the NFL and should put up points in this game. It will be hard for Seattle to defend Carson Palmer, Rudi Johnson, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Analysis: Any DST will have a tough time stopping the Bengals, but the Seahawks gave up big numbers in Week 2 against the Cardinals, who are not the offensive force that Cincinnati is. Bench them if you can.
News: The Seahawks allowed 431 yards 23 points in Week 2 at Arizona. LB Lofa Tatupu had an interception for the only turnover forced by Seattle and the team did not record any sacks.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense was pretty much abused yardage-wise in the game, but they didn't have that bad of a game elsewhere. They went up against a good offense and that's whey they have to be considered a matchup-type Fantasy defense. In Week 3 against a tough Cincinnati offense, we suggest going with another option.
News: The Seattle Seahawks allowed just six points in Sunday's Week 1 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They also recorded five sacks and recovered a pair of fumbles.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST is a solid low-end No. 1 or solid No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 2 at Arizona.
News: The Seahawks take on Tampa Bay in Week 1, and their DST should be control this game if they can limit Cadillac Williams and contain Jeff Garcia.
Analysis: An aggressive squad, the Seahawks are a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy DST, and should easily handle a weak Buccaneers offense this week at home.
News: The Houston Texans traded former first-round pick Jason Babin to the Seattle Seahawks for strong safety Michael Boulware on Saturday. Babin, a defensive end and the 27th pick in the 2004 draft, started every game as a rookie but lost his starting role in 2005 and has played in mostly a reserve role since. Babin appeared in 15 games last season, with three starts and had 26 tackles and five sacks. He said the Seahawks told him they liked his pass-rushing ability. "Seattle, they said, 'We're going to give you some chances to do some damage,'" he said. "So, hey, time to go up there and rush the passer." Seattle also traded an undisclosed 2008 draft to Jacksonville in exchange for one of the Jaguars' draft choices, plus running back/kick returner Alvin Pearman and placed DT Marcus Tubbs on IR.
Analysis: These additions deepen the talent pool in Seattle. Pearman has been a deep Fantasy sleeper for years but got buried in Jacksonville. Even though the club lost DT Marcus Tubbs, Continue to view the Seahawks DST as a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: Seahawks DT Marcus Tubbs, who returned to practice this month for the first time since having microfracture surgery on his left knee last November, left the field on the back of a motorized cart with a sprained right knee in Thursday's preseason game against the Raiders. "It appeared to be rather serious," coach Mike Holmgren said.
Analysis: CB Josh Wilson, Seattle's top draft choice in April, had a 31-yard kickoff return early but left in the third quarter -- also on a cart -- with a bruised left hip. Continue to view this DST as an aggressive squad, worthy of being a low-end starting option in all Fantasy leagues this season.
News: The Seahawks recovered two of backup QB Aaron Rodgers' fumbles and picked off third-string rookie QB Paul Thompson twice at Green Bay in Seattle's second preseason game. They also had two sacks. However, the team gave up 48 points, 14 of which came when the Packers' defense was on the field.
Analysis: The Seahawks had a rough game because the offense put them in some poor field position. Continue to view this DST as an aggressive squad, worthy of being a low-end starting option in all Fantasy leagues this season.
News: The Seattle Seahawks' No. 1 draft choice from 2004 returned to the field Monday for the first time since last November. That was when the run-stopping defensive tackle had microfracture surgery on his left knee, a still-debated procedure in which holes are drilled into bone to regenerate cartilage around the knee. "I haven't heard anybody in football getting it ... I don't know of it," a smiling Tubbs said after his morning practice, which came two weeks before the Seahawks expected him to play in an exhibition game.
Analysis: The plan is still for Tubbs to practice some this week and next before playing Aug. 25 against Minnesota. Tubbs might be able to contribute for the Seahawks this season, but his return has no affect on the Fantasy value of the Seahawks DST. Treat the Seattle defense as a decent starting unit when the matchup is favorable or when you need a need a bye-week replacement.
News: Seahawks safety Jordan Babineaux will miss the next three to four weeks of training camp after injuring his right knee on the first day of practice. Babineaux got tangled with wide receiver Ben Obomanu while leaping for a pass in the morning practice Sunday and then banged his right knee while skidding across the wet grass. Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that a scan on Babineaux's knee showed a bone bruise and he wouldn't miss significant time. "He has the bone bruise and the feeling is that we'll have him back in three or four weeks. That was good," Holmgren said.
Analysis: Babineaux could be rusty at the start of the season, but his participation doesn't make or break the Seahawks defense. Continue to view this DST as an aggressive squad, worthy of being a low-end starting option in all Fantasy leagues this season.
News: The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Seattle draftees CB Josh Wilson and DE Baraka Atkins have signed their rookie deals. The club waived RB Kenny James to make room for them.
Analysis: If the Seahawks' secondary gets their act together, this DST unit will be one of the better ones to pick in Fantasy drafts -- especially after the big-name DSTs get picked. Consider them startable in 2007.
News: In the wake of DE Patrick Kerney signing with the Seahawks, DE Grant Wistrom was released, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter. Wistrom totaled four sacks, 30 solo tackles, a forced fumble and a pass defensed in 2006. The Seahawks have also reportedly signed safety Deon grant to a six-year deal. He is expected to start at free safety for them. Last year Grant totaled 60 tackles (53 solo) with five passes defensed and two interceptions.
Analysis: The Seahawks still have a nice front seven without Wistrom. If the Seahawks' secondary gets their act together, this DST unit will be one of the better ones to pick in Fantasy drafts -- especially after the big-name DSTs get picked. Consider them startable in 2007.
News: The Seahawks agreed to a six-year deal with defensive end Patrick Kerney on Monday night. Kerney's agent, Richard Rosa, said Kerney agreed to a deal worth $39.5 million, including $19.5 million in guaranteed money. Kerney spent his entire career with the Atlanta Falcons, but was limited by injury to just nine games last season. With Seattle, Kerney will join a defensive end unit that includes veterans Bryce Fisher and Grant Wistrom, and energetic youngster Darryl Tapp. The Seahawks struggled to get any consistent pass rush from their ends for much of last season as Wistrom and Fisher combined for just eight sacks. Hybrid linebacker Julian Peterson led Seattle with 10 sacks.
Analysis: Seattle's pass rush has become amazing now considering all the talent they have on the line and at linebacker. If the Seahawks' secondary gets their act together, this DST unit will be one of the better ones to pick in Fantasy drafts -- especially after the big-name DSTs get picked. Consider them startable in 2007.
News: Seahawks DB Marcus Trufant (ankle) is listed as doubtful for Divisional Playoff game at Chicago.
Analysis: Trufant did not play in the Seahawks opener against the Cowboys and it is likely he will not play against the Bears. The Seahawks did a pretty good job without him against the Cowboys and they definitely have a better passing game than the Bears. Consider the Seahawks DST a sleeper Fantasy option in postseason leagues.
News: Seattle starting cornerbacks Marcus Trufant (high ankle sprain) and Kelly Herndon (broken ankle) both got hurt in Week 17 in a meaningless game at Tampa Bay. Herndon was placed on injured reserve, as was backup defensive back Jimmy Williams (knee), who also got hurt in Tampa Bay. As a result, the Seahawks signed a trio of defensive backs and will be forced to use them vs. Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The DBs signed are Rich Gardner, Pete Hunter (an ex-Cowboy) and John Howell. "It's really a tough situation," Seahawks defensive coordinator John Marshall said. "We're going to have to come with a decision on who's going to be where."
Analysis: The Seattle defense will have a hard time with the Dallas passing game in their wild-card game. Expect the Seattle D to recover in time and be pretty strong in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: The Seahawks DST allowed seven points with one sack and two fumble recoveries against Tampa Bay. LB Julian Peterson had six tackles and a sack. DB Michael Boulware had four tackles and a fumble recovery. DB Jimmy Williams had one tackle and a fumble recovery. LB Lofa Tatupu had seven tackles. DB Ken Hamlin had three tackles.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST was a No. 2 DST for much of this season and should be considered the same for next year.
News: The Seattle defense tamed LaDainian Tomlinson to the tune of 133 total yards and zero touchdowns, but they could only record one sack and no interceptions vs. San Diego in Week 16.
Analysis: Consider the Seahawks defense a fair unit to use at Tampa Bay in Week 17.
News: The Seattle Seahawks DST allowed 24 points and 390 total net yards in Week 15 against San Francisco. They also failed to record a sack, interception or fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Seahawks will look to get back on track in Week 16 against RB LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers. Avoid them after their past two subpar performances against the likes of the Cardinals and 49ers.
News: The Seahawks allowed 27 points and 345 yards in Week 14 at Arizona. They did not pick up any sacks in the game, but did record an interception.
Analysis: The Seahawks will look to bounce back from this poor game in Week 15 vs. San Francisco. They are a decent start in leagues of 12-plus teams for that matchup.
News: The Seattle Seahawks DST allowed 20 points and 302 total net yards in Week 13 at Denver. The Seahawks sacked rookie QB Jay Cutler three times, picked him off twice and they were good for one forced fumble and two recoveries.
Analysis: The Seahawks will travel to Glendale, Ariz. for Week 14 against the Cardinals, so their defense is a must-start in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have declared WR Bobby Engram (illness), QB David Greene, QB Gibran Hamdan, LB D.D. Lewis (toe), TE Itula Mili (concussion) and DE Robert Pollard are inactive for Week 13 at Denver.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth using in any Fantasy league for Week 14 at Arizona.
News: The Seattle defense allowed 24 points and 310 total net yards in Week 12 against the Packers in a snowy game. Unfortunately for Fantasy owners, they will have the seven points Green Bay LB Abdul Hodge scored on a fumble recovery count against them, too.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense will square off against newly appointed QB Jay Cutler and the Broncos in Week 13 next Sunday night.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have announced WR Bobby Engram, QB David Greene, QB Gibran Hamdan, LB D.D. Lewis (toe), OG Scott Locklear, FB Josh Parry (foot), DL Robert Pollard and C Robbie Tobeck are inactive for Week 12 against Green Bay.
Analysis: Only Engram is someone who would be considered useful from a Fantasy perspective when healthy.
News: The Seahawks DST gave up 20 points against San Francisco and couldn't stop 49ers RB Frank Gore, who had 212 rushing yards. LB Leroy Hill had 10 tackles. LB Lofa Tatupu had 10 tackles. DB Ken Hamlin had 12 tackles. DB Marcus Trufant had nine tackles. LB Julian Peterson had two tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Seahawks DST a good start for Week 12 against the Packers. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: Nate Burelson returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and the Seahawks DST got a huge boost in Week 10 against the Rams. The Seahawks defense held the explosive Rams offense to just 299 yards and 22 points. They also racked up four sacks (Grant Wistrom, Russell Davis and Chartric Darby [2]) and one interception (Ken Hamlin).
Analysis: The Seahawks defense has now turned in two solid performances in a row and will get a chance for a third with the 49ers on the horizon. Their offense hasn't been spectacular the past two weeks and perhaps the Seahawks can rattle their cage. Consider the Seahawks DST a low-end option in Week 11. Hamlin is really the only player that should be used in IDP leagues at this time.
News: The Seahawks defense was outstanding in Week 9 against the Raiders, posting a shutout and recording nine sacks in the 16-0 win. They were led by Craig Terrill and his three sacks of Andrew Walter. They allowed just 185 total net yards.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense will have a lot bigger of a challenge against QB Marc Bulger and the Rams in Week 10, but they remain a decent Fantasy option in most leagues.
News: The Seattle Seahawks have declared RB Shaun Alexander (foot), WR Bobby Engram (illness), QB Gibran Hamdan, QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee), LB D.D. Lewis (toe), OG Sean Locklear, DL Marcus Tubbs (knee) and OT Ray Willis as inactives for Week 9 against Oakland.
Analysis: Alexander's status is still up in the air and Hasselbeck is out until at least Week 11. Engram is the only other player worth using in any Fantasy league.
News: The Seattle defense was throttled by Larry Johnson and the Chiefs, but a Kelly Herndon fumble-return for a TD gave them some Fantasy points. They also forced a fumble and had one sack.
Analysis: Seattle's defense is good, not great, but they have a great matchup vs. Oakland in Week 9.
News: The Seahawks DST gave up 31 points and had no turnovers against Minnesota. LB Julian Peterson had 12 tackles and two sacks. LB Leroy Hill had six tackles and a sack. And DL Rocky Bernard had two tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST has a difficult matchup for Week 8 against Kansas City. Use all regular IDP players, especially Peterson, who had a monster game against the Vikings.
News: The Seahawks defense totaled six sacks at St. Louis in Week 6, adding an interception and a fumble recovery. However, they gave up 28 points and over 400 yards of total offense.
Analysis: A pretty good game all things considered for the 'Hawks. They should be viewed as a solid low-end No. 1 Fantasy defense vs. Minnesota in Week 7.
News: The Seattle DST allowed 37 points and 362 total net yards in Week 4 at Chicago. They also registered just one sack, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries in the blowout loss.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST will look to rebound in Week 6 at St. Louis once the team returns from its bye week.
News: The Seahawks allowed 27 fourth quarter points to the Giants in Week 3 to turn a 42-3 lead into a 42-30 victory. They allowed 337 yards of offense, most of which came in the final quarter. They intercepted Eli Manning three times, sacked him once and recovered a fumble
Analysis: The Seahawks had a bit of a scare at the end, but they couldn't blow the gigantic lead no matter how they tried. Despite the mental lapses at the end of the game in garbage time, the Seahawks remain a very respectful Fantasy DST for Week 4 at Chicago.

Seahawks D shut down Cardinals
News: The Seattle Seahawks defensive unit limited the Arizona Cardinals to 10 points and 256 yards in Week 2. They forced five fumbles, sacked QB Kurt Warner five times for a loss of 40 yards and intercepted one pass. LB Lofa Tatupu led the team with 12 tackles (six solo), LB Leroy Hill chipped in with eight tackles and one sack, CB Kelly Herndon had nine tackles, S Ken Hamlin had eight tackles and a sack, LB Julian Peterson has eight tackles and a sack, while rookie Daryl Tapp got his first career sack.
Analysis: The Seahawks defense has been quite impressive the first two weeks of the season. They have only allowed one touchdown, but a much tougher task lies ahead in Week 3 -- the N.Y. Giants. Consider using a different defensive option for Week 3, but if you must roll the dice, don't forget the Giants have many offensive weapons.

Seahawks rack up three sacks
News: The Seattle defense totaled three sacks and two forced fumbles and held the Lions to two field goals in Week 1.
Analysis: Seattle's defense could be in for trouble vs. Arizona in Week 2. You may want to consider another unit in place of Seattle.

Seattle's D looking good
News: The apparent upgrade of Seattle's already improved defense might also help avoid a letdown. Former two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson looks as fast and athletic as ever. Defensive coordinator John Marshall is using Peterson as an outside linebacker who often covers wide receivers on early downs. On third downs, Peterson will be an end, a lightning bolt in a three-point stance poised to charge around larger, slower offensive tackles. He joins Lofa Tatupu, a rookie Pro Bowler last season, and speedy, second-year man Leroy Hill as perhaps the NFL's most dynamic linebacking unit. The defense's biggest question is left cornerback. Veteran Kelly Herndon had a great preseason, but offenses sometimes picked on him last season. Top rookie draft choice Kelly Jennings is primed to take Herndon's job if necessary.
Analysis: Seattle will kick off 2006 at Detroit. Their offense has been rebuilt and will be run by Mike Martz, who is familiar with the Seahawks' defense since he coached against them twice a year with St. Louis. Expect a close game here, with Seattle doing enough to be considered a low-end defensive unit in Week 1.

Injuries piling up for SEA
News: The Tacoma News Tribune reports Seattle safety Mike Green suffered a 'Lisfranc' injury to his left foot and is expected to miss the 2006 season. "He was one of the bright spots of our new guys that came in," coach Mike Holmgren said, "and he's such a good guy. ... It's too bad, but now we're going to fix this and then he'll be back next year." The loss keeps the Seahawks thin at strong safety, where Michael Boulware is still rehabbing from offseason knee surgery. Also, defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs is expected to return to practice soon.
Analysis: We still consider the Seahawks DST to be a formidable unit, ranked 10th overall amongst all of the NFL's DSTs. They have a significant advantage playing against the 49ers twice a year, but matchups against the Cardinals and Rams could get interesting.

DL Wistrom sits against Colts
News: DL Grant Wistrom (shoulder) was inactive for Sunday's preseason game at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Wistrom is considered day to day. Wistrom recorded four sacks, 52 tackles (41 solo) and six passes defensed last season in Seattle. The Seahawks DST is a solid No. 1 Fantasy unit in leagues or 12 or more teams heading into the 2006 season.

Seattle's DL gets three back
News: Seattle defenders Grant Wistrom, Rocky Bernard and Joe Tafoya all returned to practice for the Seahawks on Wednesday morning. And while none of the three did much during the two hour practice, just having the trio back on the field bolstered Seattle's thin defensive line. "We just want to get back out and get back to work," Bernard said. "It feels good. Everyone has been teasing us that we've been taking it off a little bit, but it's alright."
Analysis: This only helps Seattle's cause defensively. The Seahawks DST is a solid No. 1 Fantasy unit in leagues or 12 or more teams heading into the 2006 season.

Seahawks DST a little nicked
News: The Seahawks are dealing with several injuries on the defensive side of the ball. DLs Joe Tafoya (shoulder) and Grant Wistrom (shoulder) were inactive for Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys.
Analysis: Meanwhile, S Ken Hamlin (head) was able to return to the lineup on Saturday and record a solo tackle. The Seahawks DST is a solid No. 1 Fantasy unit in leagues or 12 or more teams heading into the 2006 season.

CB Jennings, Seahawks agree
News: The Seattle Seahawks and first-round draft choice Kelly Jennings agreed on a multiyear contract two days after he was due to report to training camp. Jennings, the 31st overall pick in April's draft, has a starting job to lose over the next six weeks, before the regular season begins. Head coach Mike Holmgren seemed frustrated that Jennings was not in camp on time. He did not say whether Jennings had been fined.
Analysis: Seattle's defense only gets more attractive as they add Jennings and bring back hard hitter Ken Hamlin as a free safety. They're on the cusp of being a top-12 Fantasy DST unit, and should be drafted as a quality reserve squad in deeper Fantasy leagues with late-round picks.

Seahawks to get Hamlin back
News: Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Seattle FS Ken Hamlin has been participating in team OTAs and could be cleared by doctors to participate in full-contract drills soon.
Analysis: Seattle's defense, particularly its run defense, will improve greatly upon Hamlin's return. They have a lot of tough players in Hamlin, Lofa Tatupu, Marcus Trufant and Michael Boulware, so expect the 'Hawks to be a low-end starting DST in Fantasy leagues this year.

Ken Hamlin returns to action
News: Ken Hamlin (head) returned to work at Seattle's minicamp this past weekend. "I'm grateful to be back out there," Hamlin said. The talented defensive back continues to recover from a fractured skull and a blood clot near the brain, which he sustained in an Oct. 17 assault outside a downtown Seattle nightclub.
Analysis: Hamlin said he will continue to live up to his nickname, "The Hammer," and will not hesitate the first time he sticks his head in to make a tackle. "I love what I do. I don't think I'm going to change my style of play," Hamlin said. "I'm just waiting for my time to happen."

Seattle drafts CB Kelly Jennings
News: The Seattle Seahawks selected Miami (FL) CB Kelly Jennings with the No. 31 overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. He will fill the void left by CB Andre Dyson, who signed with the Jets in the offseason.
Analysis: The Seattle defense should be solid, and Jennings adds depth in the backfield. Look for this unit to be worth a late-round selection in seasonal drafts.
News: The Tacoma News Tribune reports Ken Hamlin (fractured skull) has been cleared for non-contact work.
Analysis: Hamlin recorded 26 tackles (22 solo) and two passes defensed in five games last season in Seattle.

Seattle lands LB Julian Peterson
News: NFL.com reports the Seattle Seahawks have signed Julian Peterson to a seven-year, $54 million contract. He recorded three sacks, 82 tackles (57 solo) and five passes defensed in 15 games last season in San Francisco.
Analysis: Peterson is talented without question, but injuries have hurt his production in recent seasons. He'll move to a 3-4 scheme for the first time in his pro career and could be the team's new weak-side linebacker, which will make the Seahawks DST more attractive.

Seahawks DST pitch the shutout
News: The Seattle defense got the job done, as the Seahawks defense recorded the shutout and scored three touchdowns. They equaled the production of the offense, which produced only 194 total yards. DB Andre Dyson was the star of the defense, returning an interception 72 yards for a touchdown and a fumble return for a 25-yard touchdown. Unfortunately, Dyson banged up his ankle and was forced from the game. Rookie Lofa Tatupu also had an 38-yard interception return for touchdown.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST should be a solid start against the 49ers in Week 14. On the injury front, DB Kelly Herndon (knee), LB Jamie Sharper (knee) and DB John Howell (hamstring) were out. DL Chartric Darby (knee) was able to play and record three solo tackles and an assist. DL Bryce Fisher (foot) contributed with a half of a sack and D.D. SEA LB Sharper out indefinitely
News: Seattle linebacker Jamie Sharper is out indefinitely with a swollen knee. Doctors drained the knee, but head coach Mike Holmgren said they do not yet know what medications to use to treat the infection.

Seahawks banged up on defense
News: CB Andre Dyson is expected to miss a couple of weeks after pulling his hamstring. Kelly Herndon will start in Dyson's place. Linebacker D.D. Lewis also tweaked his right knee, but there's a chance he will play Sunday. The news was far more encouraging for safety Michael Boulware, who was carted off the field Sunday on a stretcher after suffering a lower back injury. Holmgren said Boulware had additional examination on Monday there is a chance he will play on Sunday against Houston. "The possibility to play this game is very exciting and very motivating," Boulware said. "The play I got hurt on, I played a little tentative, and I think it made me realize that if you played tentative you're going to get hurt."
Analysis: The Seahawks defense remains a solid Fantasy option in the matchup vs. the struggling Texans offense, which could be without top receiving target Andre Johnson (calf). Consider the Seahawks a solid DST start in all leagues in Week 6.
