News: The Buccaneers announced some tough news Thursday after defensive end Da'Quan Bowers suffered a torn Achilles tendon while participating in the club's offseason program. He's expected to miss the entire 2012 season. This news comes on the same day that the Bucs are believed to be moving Ronde Barber to safety from cornerback.
Analysis: Losing Bowers is a kick in the gut for the Bucs -- he wasn't their top pass rusher (that would be Adrian Clayborn) but certainly was expected to contribute. Tampa Bay has done a decent job improving its defense this offseason, especially the secondary with cornerback Eric Wright and rookie safety Mark Barron joining the starting lineup. However, it's best to consider the Bucs DST a one-week replacement off waivers when faced with a good matchup during the season.
News: The first transaction of the Greg Schiano era in Tampa Bay involves a big player but isn't a big surprise. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was released. "I appreciate Albert playing for us after some key injuries this past season," said GM Mark Dominik. "He was very professional and we now wish him all the best as he moves forward."
Analysis: Tampa Bay's defense is considered iffy heading into 2012, and that would be the case if Haynesworth were on the roster. At the most, we could see the Bucs DST as a one-week replacement option during the season.
News: The Buccaneers are counting on Greg Schiano to lead them back to respectability and transform Tampa Bay into consistent winners -- much in the same way he made Rutgers matter again. Schiano was at Rutgers for 11 seasons, taking them from college football laughingstocks to a program that has had winning records in six of the last seven years. He was an assistant coach in the NFL with Chicago from 1996-98. "Coach Schiano is a bright, meticulous teacher who knows how to get the most out of his players," GM Mark Dominik said. "He built and ran a pro-style program at Rutgers, and he's a defensive-minded coach whose teams have always been characterized by toughness and a physical style of play."
Analysis: Schiano inherits a team that allowed the most points in the NFL this season and is also among the league's youngest. There's no doubting his football knowledge or his ability to garner respect, but unless the Bucs surround him with some experienced coaches to help him through his first few years, there could be some struggles. We don't think the hire will improve the defense overnight as they have too many issues that warrant change. At the most, we could see the Bucs DST as a one-week replacement option during the season.
News: The Buccaneers fired head coach Raheem Morris on Monday after three seasons that raised questions about ownership's commitment to winning because the club has resisted spending large amounts of money in free agency. A 45-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Sunday's season finale was the 10th straight following a 4-2 start. The skid was the franchise's longest within one season since 1977, when the Bucs lost 12 in a row to extend the longest losing streak in league history to 26 consecutive games over two years. Morris went 17-31, including a 10-6 mark in 2010, when the Bucs narrowly missed the playoffs. His entire staff of assistants was dismissed, too.
Analysis: The Bucs finished dead last against the run, yielding 156.1 rush yards per game and a horrible 26 rushing touchdowns. They finished 21st against the pass, allowing 238.4 yards per game and 30 passing touchdowns. Expect the Bucs to start fresh on defense with their next head coach, but don't expect the unit to turn around to the point where they'll be factors in Fantasy.
News: The Tampa Bay defense was overwhelmed early and surrendered 42 unanswered points before halftime during a 45-24 loss at Atlanta in Week 17. The Buccaneers were run over for 251 rushing yards and 428 total yards en route to its 10th consecutive defeat, their longest losing streak in one season in 34 years. Tampa Bay also lost 10 straight in 1977. "This is not the season we wanted or expected, but we will need to rededicate ourselves and get ready for this offseason," said Bucs coach Raheem Morris, whose job status is in doubt.
Analysis: Tampa Bay managed one highlight during its lackluster defensive performance when DB Elbert Mack returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown during the third quarter. But the Buccaneers were unable to manage a sack during the game despite facing backup Falcons QB Chris Redman for most of the contest. Tampa Bay finished with more than two sacks in a game only twice this season. The team clearly has work to do on defense and should not be considered worthy of a selection in Fantasy drafts for the 2012 season.
News: Tampa Bay travels to Atlanta in Week 17 and will try to end the season on a high note. It won't be an easy task as the Falcons are averaging 373 total yards of offense per outing, which is 10th most in the league. Atlanta also averages 23.8 points per outing. The last time the Bucs faced the Falcons -- back in Week 3 -- they gave up over 300 yards passing to Matt Ryan. Tampa Bay won the game 16-13.
Analysis: Opposing DSTs are scoring an average of 8 Fantasy points per contest versus the Falcons. Atlanta has clinched a wild card spot in the playoffs, so the starters could rest a bit in Week 17. Still, the Bucs have given up 30-plus points six times over that span and have just 13 interceptions on the year. Fantasy owners should not be starting the Buccaneers DST at this stage of the season.
News: The Buccaneers defense did not do a good job of slowing down the Panthers in Week 16. Tampa Bay gave up 433 yards of total offense, including 270 on the ground in the 48-16 loss. Three different Carolina players rushed for a touchdown. QB Cam Newton, who was one of those players, also threw for 171 yards with three scores. The Buccaneers were able to record one sack and did not cause a turnover in the defeat.
Analysis: The Buccaneers have now lost nine games in a row and some of those losses can be blamed on the defense. They have given up 30-plus points six times over that span and have just 13 interceptions on the year. Tampa Bay could be in for even more trouble next week against the Falcons so consider their DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: The Buccaneers will have their hands full as they take on the Panthers for the second time this season in Week 16. Tampa Bay ranks 26th in the league in pass defense and 30th against the run, giving up over 141 yards per contest, while Carolina ranks fifth and 10th in rushing and passing, respectively. The Buccaneers have recorded 22 sacks thus far with 13 interceptions and three DST scores.
Analysis: The Buccaneers gave up 385 yards of total offense and four rushing touchdowns when they faced the division foe in Week 13 and could be in similar trouble on Saturday. Led by rookie QB Cam Newton, the Panthers have an improved passing attack, and also run the ball very well with RBs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. Tampa Bay is looking like a bad play for Week 16 so plan on leaving their DST on the bench in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Buccaneers defense was able to find the end zone in Week 15 against the Cowboys. LB Dekoda Watson was able to scoop up a Tony Romo fumble and take it 7 yards for a touchdown back in the third quarter. The unit surrendered 31 points on 399 yards of total offense in the 31-15 defeat and did rack up a pair of sacks in the contest.
Analysis: Tampa Bay's defense was able to put some points on the board Saturday night, but were still gashed for a ton of points and yards. Injuries have played a key part in their struggles this year and the Bucs' anemic offense isn't helping at all. With the playoffs now here in most leagues, owners should not be using the Buccaneers DST. Leave the unit on the bench when the Tampa Bay heads out to Carolina in Week 16.
News: Tampa Bay's performance in its last outing sums up the quality of the team right now. The Buccaneers surrendered 41 points and 325 yards in a loss to Jacksonville, which was averaging just 12.7 points a game. The Jaguars ranked as the league's worst on offense with an average of less than 260 yards a game. The only silver lining for Tampa Bay was two interceptions and three sacks as its losing streak hit seven games.
Analysis: It's unlikely to get any better for the Buccaneers in Week 15 as they battle an improved Dallas offense fueled by QB Tony Romo. The Cowboys have scored at least 20 points in five of their past six games and Romo has accounted for 15 touchdown passes and just two interceptions in that six-game span. Tampa Bay is permitting an averaged of 248.8 passing yards per game and managed just eight sacks since Week 8. Fantasy owners should not consider the Buccaneers a worthwhile DST option in Week 15.
News: After the first 16 minutes of its Week 14 matchup against Jacksonville, Tampa Bay seemed poised to halt its six-game losing streak. However, the Buccaneers crumbled and allowed 41 unanswered points, including 28 in the second quarter alone, during a 41-14 loss on Sunday. Tampa Bay didn't help its cause by turning the ball over a staggering seven times and surrendering four touchdowns to RB Maurice Jones-Drew.
Analysis: The Buccaneers have struggled to create pressure with the pass rush all season, and that continued Sunday. Tampa Bay sacked Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert only once the entire game as they allowed the rookie to make some significant plays downfield. The Bucs had registered two sacks in each of their past three games before the limited performance on Sunday. Tampa could struggle again in Week 15 against Dallas' passing game and should be viewed as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for the matchup.
News: The Tampa Bay defense has one objective during its Week 14 meeting at Jacksonville -- limit RB Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL's leading rusher. Since Week 7, the Buccaneers have allowed an average of 30.7 points a game, including 38 points against Carolina last Sunday. Tampa Bay's defense has been particularly poor against the run, surrendering an average of nearly 170 yards a game during its six-game losing streak.
Analysis: Backed by a quality defense, the Buccaneers started the season 3-1 to give coach Raheem Morris the notion that his young defenders could handle an increasing diet of scheme additions. In retrospect, maybe it was too much to handle. "We are going to scale back a bit," Morris said. "Simplify some things." Tampa Bay failed to create a turnover in its last game and has not recorded more than two sacks since Week 4 against Indianapolis. Fantasy owners should consider the Bucs a No. 2 Fantasy DST against the injury-riddled Jaguars in Week 14.
News: The Buccaneers DST couldn't stop Cam Newton on Sunday of Week 13 at home. The Buccaneers DST gave up 385 total yards to Newton and company en route to a 38-19 loss at home. The Buccaneers DST didn't force a single turnover in the game and only managed to get to Newton twice. Da'Quan Bowers had 1 1/2 of those sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST had a huge performance Week 12 at Tennessee, producing 18 Fantasy points. Unfortunately, they have been ugly outside of that performance of late. The Buccaneers DST was really ugly Week 13 and should remain so Week 14 at Jacksonville. The Buccaneers DST is not a recommended Fantasy unit for Week 14.
News: The Buccaneers DST plays against Carolina Week 13. The Panthers are allowing the seventh-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units. That said, the Lions DST and Colts DST struggled in consecutive weeks against Carolina, who has been gaining plenty of yardage.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST had one the unit's best games last week in Tennessee as it recorded four turnovers, two sacks and a DTD. That said, the Buccaneers DST has allowed at least 20 points in seven straight games. They have allowed at least 350 total yards in all of those contests. The Buccaneers DST is not a recommended Fantasy unit for Week 13.
News: The Buccaneers lost to the Titans, 23-17, in Week 12, but the defense kept the Bucs in the game. Though the Titans rolled up 352 yards of offense, including 190 rushing yards from Chris Johnson, they took advantage of the rainy weather, forcing four turnovers. The defense recovered a pair of fumbles, and they picked off QB Matt Hasselbeck twice. On the second interception, DB Aqib Talib took the pick 27 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs also recorded a pair of sacks.
Analysis: The Buccaneers have not been very good defensively this year, but between the poor weather conditions and Hasselbeck's struggles to overcome an elbow injury, they were able to put up some points for Fantasy owners in Week 12. These were ideal conditions for the Bucs DST, but they are likely to have a bumpier ride in Week 13 when they host the Panthers. In virtually any format, owners should be able to find a more reliable DST unit for the coming week.
News: After six straight games of allowing more than 370 yards of offense, the Buccaneers DST will get their most favorable matchup in awhile. In Week 12, they will face the Titans, whose 316.3 offensive yards per game are the 12th-lowest average in the league. Tennessee also sports the 12th-lowest scoring average, putting up 20.3 points per game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST should fare better in Week 12, but that doesn't mean that they will be good enough to start. Owners would need them to face one of the worst offenses in the league to be considered even in most deeper leagues, and while the Titans have a below-average offense, they are not bad enough to make the Bucs a viable start. Only in the deepest of Fantasy formats should owners give any consideration to the Bucs DST.
News: The Buccaneers DST had a tough matchup in Week 11 against a potent Packers offense, but they held their own in a 35-26 loss. Though the Packers did muster five touchdowns, the Bucs' defense held them to 378 total yards of offense, which is fewer than Green Bay's per-game offensive output. They also sacked QB Aaron Rodgers twice and intercepted him once in the game's final quarter.
Analysis: It was not a good week to start the Bucs DST, but then again, not many Fantasy owners expected them to perform well with such a difficult matchup. Things could have been worse, but ultimately, they did little to help the few owners who started them. The Titans pose a more favorable matchup in Week 12, but the Bucs DST is still merely an option for owners in deeper leagues.
News: The Buccaneers DST enters Week 11 as the third-least productive unit in the league, but they won't get a break when they face the Packers. While Tampa Bay ranks 28th against the pass and 29th against the run, they will face a Green Bay squad that has rolled up more than 35 points per game, which is the highest scoring average in the league. The Packers also rank fourth in total offensive yards per game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is rarely an advisable start, and in Week 11, it is even less so. Keep them on waivers in all formats for the coming week.
News: The Buccaneers DST didn't really have much chance at a win on Sunday in Week 10 at home against Houston. The Texans scored on an 80-yard TD pass on the game's first play and it was all downhill from there. The Buccaneers DST allowed 420 yards of offense and QB Matt Schaub barely had to throw the ball at all in the second half as they couldn't stop the run. The Buccaneers DST could not force a single turnover and only managed one sack of Schaub.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST has been solid for the most part this season, though they have struggled in back-to-back games against the Saints and Texans. The Buccaneers DST heads into Week 11 at Green Bay with another tough offense to face. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers should throw all over the Buccaneers DST, which should not be starting in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Buccaneers DST continued to underwhelm in Week 9 at New Orleans with just one turnover forced and 27 points points allowed to go with 453 yards. Heading into Week 10, things won't get easier at home against Houston. The Texans are allowing opposing DST units to score the second-fewest amount of Fantasy points per game on the season. The Texans' Matt Schaub has only been sacked twice in the last three games and Houston has only turned the ball over nine times on the entire season.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST has allowed at least 20 points to be scored upon them in all but two games this year and they have already given up 42 points to the 49ers. Houston has a high-powered offense we expect to run all over Tampa Bay. For that reason, the Buccaneers DST is a unit to avoid in Week 10.
News: The Buccaneers DST got hammered by the Saints run game and wound up being a big reason why the team lost in Week 9. New Orleans totaled 195 rush yards (453 net yards), and Drew Brees wasn't sacked once. He did throw an interception. The Saints won 27-16.
Analysis: Tampa Bay's DST unit moves back home in Week 10 to take on the Texans, an offense that should continue the rushing onslaught. Keep the Bucs DST off of rosters.
News: This isn't a good week to trust the Buccaneers DST in Fantasy play as they travel to New Orleans where the Saints are averaging 44 points per game in three tries this season. Drew Brees has been picked off five times in his last three against Tampa Bay but has rolled up 842 yards and five touchdowns in that span. And in those last three, the Saints have totaled 64 points (21.3 per game).
Analysis: You could trust the Bucs DST this week to get a sack or two (the Rams had six last week against Brees!) and an interception, but the potential for the Saints to put up a ton of points should scare off most owners. Consider other options (such as the Bengals, Raiders and Titans DSTs) in Week 9.
News: The Buccaneers allowed 24 points and 395 yards of total offense in their Week 7 loss to the Bears in London. They forced two interceptions in the game and added a pair of sacks in the game. They were able to score two of the team's 18 points in the game by tackling RB Matt Forte in the end zone for a safety.
Analysis: The Bucs continue to be a very aggressive team defensively, generating turnovers and getting after opposing quarterbacks. They had some chances to return turnovers for touchdowns in London, with DB Ronde Barber dropping a potential pick six and another interception return being brought back to the 12-yard line. Continue to view the Buccaneers defensive unit as a viable No. 2 option in Fantasy, most useful during the bye weeks. However, the team will be on a bye in Week 8 and will not be of help to anybody. They'll return to action in Week 9 for a tough matchup on the road at New Orleans.
News: The Buccaneers travel to London in Week 7 to take on the Chicago Bears. The Bears rank 21st in the NFL in total offense, averaging 327.8 total yards per game. They have averaged 24.3 points in six contests this season.
Analysis: The Bears have had protection problems for much of the season, allowing 19 sacks in six games. QB Jay Cutler has thrown just four interceptions, but the Bucs will be up against an offense without a prominent passing game. They do have one of the more effective running games in the league, however. Consider the Bucs a No. 2 defensive unit in standard formats.
News: The Buccaneers DST surrendered 20 points on 453 total yards of offense in Week 6 against the Saints. Tampa Bay did give up over 383 passing yards in the 26-20 victory, but was able to hold New Orleans to just 70 yards on the ground. The unit also forced four turnovers in the victory, including picking Drew Brees off three times and once in the end zone. The Buccaneers did not record a sack in the contest, but only allowed the Saints to score in one for their four trips in the red zone.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST played very well on Sunday, frustrating the Saints' offense for much of the afternoon. The unit was able pick off Brees three times and pretty much put a lid on New Orleans' ground attack. Now the unit will head out to London to face the Bears in Week 7. While Chicago has been a bit fickle on offense of late, the Bears can still put up a ton of points in a hurry. Consider the Buccaneers a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into the matchup.
News: The Buccaneers DST will try and slow down the Saints high-powered offense in Week 6. New Orleans enters the contest ranked No. 2 in total offense, averaging 452 total yards and 31.4 points per game. Tampa Bay enters Sunday's contest ranked 25th in total defense, allowing 378 yards and 25 points per contest. The Buccaneers DST has racked up 10 sacks but forced just three turnovers and scored one touchdown through the first five games of the season.
Analysis: The Buccaneers will have their hands full trying to slow down Drew Brees and the Saints on Sunday and will have to do so without the likes of Gerald McCoy. McCoy has been unable to practice all week due to an ankle injury, putting his status for Sunday in doubt. While Tampa Bay has a bunch of young talent on the defensive side of the ball, the unit has not yet been able to gel into a viable Fantasy play on most weeks. Consider the Buccaneers a No. 2 Fantasy DST on Sunday against the Saints.
News: The Buccaneers defense had a hard time slowing down the 49ers in Week 5. Tampa Bay allowed 418 yards of total offense, including 213 on the ground, and caused just one turnover in the 48-3 loss. The Buccaneers forced a fumble on RB Frank Gore but were unable to sack or pick off QB Alex Smith, who threw for 170 yards with three touchdowns.
Analysis: The Buccaneers allowed a season-high 41 points of offense on Sunday and could not slow down the running game at all. They made the 49ers look like a very potent offense, which Fantasy owners know is not the case. Tampa Bay could be in for even more trouble next week when they host the Saints so consider the Buccaneers DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 6.
News: The Buccaneers will be facing one of the lesser offenses in the league in Week 5 against the 49ers. San Francisco ranks 22nd and 29th in the league in rushing and passing, respectively, while Tampa Bay sports the 11th-best rush defense and rank 21st against the pass. The Buccaneers have recorded 10 sacks so far this season with two interceptions and a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Buccaneers gave up just 62 yards rushing against the Colts a week ago but they will have their hands full with the 49ers on Sunday. While they don't rank as high, San Francisco definitely has a potent running game, and can make some plays through the air when needed. While they are a young unit on defense, they still have a way to go before becoming a viable Fantasy play so consider the Buccaneers DST as a No. 2 option for Week 5.
News: After giving up an average of 114 yards on the ground through their first three games this season, the Buccaneers looked much better in Week 4 against the Colts. Tampa Bay held Indianapolis to just 62 yards rushing in the 24-17 win. While QB Curtis Painter threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns, the Buccaneers were able to sack him four times, including a forced fumble and recovery.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense gave up some big plays through the air on Monday night but shut down the Colts' running game en route to the win. With their big defensive line, they should continue to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and have enough talent in the secondary to pick off some passes. Tampa Bay will definitely need to stop the run against San Francisco next week if they plan on coming away with a win so consider the Buccaneers DST as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 5.
News: After recording four sacks in a win over Atlanta in Week 3, Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris said there was a key reason for the Buccaneers' improved pass rush -- it had the rare luxury of leading. "The first couple of weeks, we've been behind and we were playing the guessing game," Morris said. "We finally had a chance to pin our ears back and hunt." Tampa Bay also forced three turnovers to give them five total takeaways this season.
Analysis: The Bucs could enjoy another strong day on defense as they host struggling Indianapolis in Week 4 on Sunday. Already without QB Peyton Manning (neck) and Kerry Collins dealing with concussion-like symptoms, the Colts decided Friday to give Curtis Painter his first NFL start under center. Fantasy owners should expect another furious pass rush against Painter as Indianapolis has mustered just three offensive touchdowns this year. Consider Tampa a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Sunday's matchup.
News: Tampa Bay turned in its best defensive performance of the young season to make a statement in the NFC South during a 16-13 victory over Atlanta in Week 3 on Sunday. The swarming Buccaneers defense forced three turnovers and sacked Falcons QB Matt Ryan four times as the young squad ended a five-game losing streak in the series. Four of those losses were by six or fewer points, but Tampa Bay reversed that trend Sunday.
Analysis: The Buccaneers forced two first-half fumbles with sacks of Ryan, who has been besieged by opposing defenses all season. Ronde Barber intercepted a pass to stop an Atlanta threat just before halftime, and the Falcons were also stopped on downs inside the Bucs 10 early in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay limited the visitors to just 30 rushing yards and only two first downs in running plays. Fantasy owners should certainly be encouraging by Tampa's showing heading into a favorable matchup against Indianapolis in Week 5. Consider the Bucs a No. 2 Fantasy DST versus the Colts.
News: Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris believes his squad may be battling Atlanta for NFC South supremacy for years to come. There's one thing the Bucs must do first in order to call it a rivalry -- beat the Falcons. Tampa earns its first opportunity to halt a five-game losing skid to Atlanta in Week 3 on Sunday. In order to do so, the Bucs will have to avoid a first-half lapse like it has experienced in the first two games of the season. The Tampa defense has surrendered at least 17 points before halftime in each game, and has recovered to win just one outing.
Analysis: The key to the Bucs' success will rattling Atlanta QB Matt Ryan. Tampa Bay hasn't sacked Ryan in the past two meetings, but he hasn't seemed as elusive during the early part of the 2011 season. Ryan has been sacked nine times through the first two games and was limited in practice Wednesday due to a knee injury. The Bucs, meanwhile, have netted four sacks this season. Fantasy owners should not consider Tampa a viable option for Week 3 after managing an average of six Fantasy points per game this season.
News: The Buccaneers defense got off to a slow start Week 2 against the Vikings, and they were down 17-0 before halftime. However, they regrouped on the way to limiting the Minnesota offense to just 3 points in the final two quarters on the way to a comeback win. Adrian Peterson still notched 120 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the defense allowed 398 yards in total. The Bucs forced a Percy Harvin fumble and they sacked Donovan McNabb twice in the 24-20 win.
Analysis: The Bucs held their own again on Sunday, though it may not have been pretty. It did not seem like the defense would be able to limit the quick-start Viking offense, but they continued to pressure the QB on the way to dominating the second half. Things get a bit tougher for the Bucs DST, but they may be a sleeper option against division rival Atlanta in Week 3.
News: Though the Lions put up 431 yards on the Bucs in Week 1, they did manage to score a defensive touchdown. In Week 2, the team travels to Minnesota to take on the Vikings. Calvin Johnson gashed Aquib Talib -- who made the pick-six -- for most of the afternoon. However, he said that he is healthy on Wednesday after missing plenty of time in the preseason because of hamstring injuries. "I'm totally (healthy) to go into Minnesota." That may take care of Percy Harvin, but the the Bucs have to begin with stopping the incomparable Adrian Peterson.
Analysis: Jahvid Best notched over 100 total yards against the Bucs defense, and the linebackers took some of the blame. Two days after coach Raheem Morris specifically said linebackers Geno Hayes and Quincy Black needed to step up, Hayes said he couldn't agree more: "We already knew it, but I am glad he said it, because it's true. ... We respect what (Morris) says." Even if they do, we like the Bucs DST as just a No. 2 defense heading into the matchup.
News: Lions QB Matthew Stafford fired three touchdowns as Detroit beat Tampa Bay, 27-20, in Week 1. The Bucs defense started well, holding Detroit to two first-quarter field goals and scoring on Aqib Talib's 28-yard interception return. However, Stafford heated up in the second quarter with two touchdowns and didn't look back. Detroit rolled up 431 yards (126 rushing). Tampa Bay managed the one turnover and no sacks.
Analysis: The Bucs defense looked sharp at the beginning of Sunday's game, but once Detroit started to click it was easy pickings for Stafford. The Bucs defense has some good athletes, but until they gel and start to become a feared unit, then continue to view the Bucs DST as a low-end Fantasy option. The Bucs play the Vikings in Week 2.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the Bucs simply had no answer for Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, who caught 10 passes for 152-yards in their last meeting in Week 15 in 2010. They might this time around in Week 1 of the 2011 season. Cornerback Aqib Talib, who had a season-ending hip injury and missed the final month a year ago, is back and will draw Johnson despite not having played a preseason game because of a hamstring strain. "Absolutely (it makes us better)," cornerback Ronde Barber said. "No one appreciates premium matchups more than that guy."
Analysis: The Bucs defense allowed 18.2 points and 275.5 yards per game in 2010. But even without QB Matt Stafford in Week 15 last year, the Lions rolled up 23 points and 433 yards on Tampa Bay. The Bucs will be looking for a better effort this time around and having Talib might make a difference. But the Lions have Stafford this time and still a very potent offense, so you might look to other Fantasy options in Week 1 before choosing the Bucs DST.
News: The Buccaneers are counting on Adrian Clayborn to bolster their sagging pass rush. The former Iowa star was the fifth defensive end selected in the opening round of NFL draft and addresses what Bucs general manager Mark Dominik identified last week as the biggest need for a team that ranked 30th among 32 teams in sacks while going 10-6 and narrowly missing the playoffs last season. Clayborn is expected to contribute right away on a young defensive line. "This guy is a productive player. He creates havoc on the football field. He helps other players around him become productive players," Dominik said.
Analysis: The Bucs entered the draft missing two key defensive pieces: A pass rush and a cover corner to replace Aqib Talib. They fixed the pass rush with Clayborn. Assuming they either keep Talib or replace him effectively, the unit will be close to being a big sleeper in 2011. For now, we don't like them as a draft pick, but they will be worth claiming off waivers as a one-week replacement.
News: Police in a Dallas suburb say Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib has turned himself in on a warrant accusing him of firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend. Garland, Texas, police said Talib was released after posting a $25,000 bond Wednesday. Police say they believe Talib and his mother, Okolo Talib, shot at the man March 21. The man was not injured. Ms. Talib, who faced a felon in possession of a firearm charge, turned herself in Tuesday and bonded out. "We are deeply troubled by the serious charges filed against Aqib Talib," Bucs GM Mark Dominik said in a statement. "Due to current labor circumstances, we will withhold any further comment or action."
Analysis: Talib's been in trouble with the law before and has been suspended by the NFL once already for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Expect another suspension in 2011, curbing the optimism for the Bucs DST headed into 2011. In fact, there's a chance the team could release Talib, opening up a hole in the secondary.
News: Felony arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon have been issued for Bucs CB Aqib Talib, and his mother Okolo Talib has been taken into custody in Garland, Texas. The Tampa Tribune reports that Talib will turn himself into police later in the week and have bail set at $25,000.
News: The Buccaneers DST did what they had to do to defeat the Saints in the Week 17 contest. The DST allowed Drew Brees and New Orleans just 305 yards of total offense as they managed to pull the 23-13 victory. The Buccaneers DST forced three turnovers in the ballgame as Brees threw an interception and lost a fumble and Julius Jones lost another costly fumble near the goal line. The Bucs managed to sack Brees three times in the win.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST was solid but not spectacular in Week 17 and that is how they should be viewed going forward. They are one of the youngest units in the NFL, however, and could be a solid start next season. Still, they would not be worth a look in drafts, instead a nice waiver-wire pickup.
News: Coming off of an embarrassing loss to the Lions last week, The Tampa Bay defense rebounded in dominating fashion in the Week 16 win over the Seahawks. After surrendering an opening drive touchdown, the Bucs buckled-down and limited Seattle to just 174 total yards and 15 points on the afternoon. After allowing back-to-back 180-plus yard rushing efforts, Tampa limited the Seattle ground game to half the total (90 yards). They held the Seahawks passing game to a season-low 84 net yards. It was the teams lowest total since Oct. 19, 2008. QB Charlie Whitehurst, who came in for Matt Hasselbeck late in the first quarter, passed for just 66 yards and was sacked three times.
Analysis: The Buccaneers looked like a dominant squad on Sunday, granted it was against a sub-par offense. Although they did not force a turnover, they limited the 'Hawks to just 5 of 15 third-down conversions, most of which were towards the end of the game when they were in the prevent defense. The Bucs allowed just 3.3 offensive yards per play, and did not allow a play to go for more than 29 yards. In Week 17, it will be tough for them to duplicate the effort against the Saints, who put up 31points against them early in the season. Consider the up-start Buccaneers DST to be a low-end Fantasy unit heading into that matchup.
News: The Tampa Bay defense will have an opportunity to revert back to its stingy ways against the run in Week 16 when the Buccaneers face under-performing Seattle on Sunday. Tampa Bay has allowed 180 rushing yards to opponents in back-to-back games for the first time all season but could quickly halt that streak against a Seahawks' rushing offense that is ranked 31st in the league (85.2 yards per game). Seattle has also failed to produce a 100-yard rusher in 18 consecutive games. And the Seahawks' struggles are not just limited to the running the ball. The team's quarterback position is in shambles after Matt Hasselbeck, who will start Sunday's game, has thrown 10 interceptions in the last four games. In the passing game is where the Bucs would like to benefit as the team tries to collect its first interception in three games after recording 18 picks during the first 14 weeks of the season.
Analysis: Tampa Bay has lost five starters to injury in recent weeks but has still managed to remain in playoff contention. The Bucs are behind three teams in the NFC wild-card race and will need to win out and hope for some well-timed losses, starting with Sunday's game. "We still have an opportunity, which is great," Bucs coach Raheem Morris said. "My message to the team is for us the playoffs start this week." Undoubtedly, Tampa will be energized to erase the painful loss to Detroit in Week 15 but also to halt a two-game losing skid at home and stay in the playoff hunt. The Bucs have lost three of their last four games but by an average of just 4.6 points and have held five of its opponents at home to fewer than 30 points. Consider the Tampa Bay defense a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST against a Seattle offense that has scored 30 points just once in its last five games.
News: The depleted Buccaneers defense, which has seen DB Aqib Talib, DL Gerald McCoy and LB Quincy Black go on injured reserve in the last two weeks, couldn't muster much against the Lions in Week 15. They allowed 23 points on 433 yards and didn't record a single sack or turnover. They were facing a third-string quarterback in the Lions' Drew Stanton.
Analysis: The Buccaneers were especially bad against the run, giving up 181 rushing yards on 6.5 yards a carry to a team that started Maurice Morris at running back. This looked like a favorable matchup for the Buccaneers DST. If it couldn't hold its own against the injury-depleted Lions, then it's probably not worth using in Fantasy, even with another good matchup Week 16 against the Seahawks.
News: Coming off a disappointing performance in which they allowed 399 yards to a struggling Redskins offense in Week 14, the Buccaneers get to face an inexperienced quarterback in Drew Stanton when they host the Lions in Week 15. Unfortunately, they'll be without many of their key defenders. They lost DL Gerald McCoy and LB Quincy Black to injuries last week, placing both on injured reserve Tuesday after placing DB Aqib Talib on injured reserve just last week. They're also dealing with Monday's arrest of LB Geno Hayes on disorderly conduct and trespassing charges.
Analysis: The Lions have struggled with Stanton under center, scoring a total of 27 points in the two games he's started. Of course, some reports have suggested that QB Shaun Hill could be ready to return from a broken finger this week, so if you're starting the Buccaneers DST solely because of Stanton, you might want to rethink your strategy. The injuries clearly seemed to limit the Buccaneers last week, so they're no guarantee to dominate against the Lions. Consider the Buccaneers DST just a No. 2 Fantasy unit this week.
News: When DT Gerald McCoy (torn biceps) and LB Quincy Black (broken forearm) went down in the Bucs' Week 14 game at Washington, it marked the sixth and seventh starters in three weeks to suffer season-ending injuries. DT Michael Bennett is expected to replace McCoy and LBs Dekoda Watson and Adam Hayward will platoon to replace Black. The Buccaneers DST allowed 399 yards of offense to the Redskins and could not stop the run in the first half, forcing just one turnover and sacking Donovan McNabb twice in the game.
Analysis: Next up for the Bucs: The Lions, who have a lot of offensive firepower. Look for Tampa Bay to rack up a takeaway or two along with a couple of sacks, making them a decent DST option if you're looking for help off of waivers.
News: The Buccaneers DST may have lost rookie DT Gerald McCoy to a biceps injury early in the Week 14 game in Washington, but they didn't lose the game. Tampa Bay pulled out the comeback win as they owned the second half and won 17-16. Tampa Bay allowed a Santana Moss touchdown with less than a minute to play but the Redskins botched the snap on the extra point to lose the game. The Buccaneers DST allowed 399 yards of offense to the Redskins and could not stop the run in the first half. Still, they tightened up in the second half and got the job done. The DST, however, forced just one turnover and sacked Donovan McNabb twice in the game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers tightened the screws against the run in the second half and chipped away at the Washington lead with field goals. That said, the defense looked pretty poor early on and the Redskins still racked up the yardage. The Bucs DST could not force more than one turnover and two sacks on McNabb are not enough. Despite the win, the Bucs DST still underperformed Week 14. With a rebound possible against the Lions in Week 15, go ahead and continue starting them if they have been your reliable unit all year.
News: The Buccaneers DST may be facing the Redskins at the right time Week 14. Washington was blown away by New York last week and is reeling heading into the home game. Donovan McNabb has continued to make uncharacteristic mistakes and the Redskins have allowed the fifth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units. DSTs have recorded double-digit Fantasy points in six straight games against Washington and the Redskins have only allowed fewer than nine Fantasy points to a DST once all year.
Analysis: With Washington's porous record against opposing DSTs and the fact that they are struggling as badly as they've been all year heading into Week 14, the Bucs DST seems like a pretty solid start. Unfortunately, the unit had one of its worst games Week 13 against Atlanta and lost cornerback Aqib Talib in the process. The secondary stands to lose a lot of pop now that Talib is out and the Redskins could certainly take advantage in what could be a bounce-back game. Still, if the Buccaneers DST has been your unit for most of the season, there is no reason not to keep rolling with them.
News: Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a tendon in his hip from the bone, reports the St. Petersburg Times. Surgery isn't expected, but recovery time is five months. The Bucs have not made an official announcement on Talib, who got hurt in the first half of Tampa Bay's Week 13 loss vs. Atlanta.
Analysis: Talib had six interceptions for the Bucs and was their best defender in the secondary. Without him, this defense will be ripe to get picked apart, just as it was late in their Week 13 loss vs. Atlanta. The unit has a chance for some decent production given their upcoming matchups, but don't count on them as a No. 1 option or anything like that.
News: Tampa Bay's defense contained Atlanta to 290 total yards of offense in Week 13. Despite limiting the yards, penalties and big plays would bite the Buccaneers in the end. They would give up a 10-point lead late in the game, eventually losing to the Falcons 28-24. A horse collar penalty and pass interference call would set up the game-winning drive for Atlanta. Tampa Bay picked off Matt Ryan twice -- the Falcons first turnovers in five games. Tampa Bay would also lose DB Aqib Talib with a hip injury in the first half, which led to Atlanta throwing more long balls with him on the sideline. The Bucs didn't get a sack on Ryan all game either.
Analysis: Tampa Bay entered Week 13 really hot, collecting 12 sacks and two interceptions in their previous three games. While they did force two turnovers, the front seven couldn't get a lot of pressure on Ryan. The Bucs are weak in the secondary and if Talib is out for an extended period of time, the defense would take another hit. In Week 14, Tampa Bay faces Washington, team that has struggled to score this year -- averaging just 18.5 points per game. Fantasy owners should weigh their option during the week and consider Tampa Bay's DST a low-end option for Week 14.
News: The Bucs defense heads into Week 13 against the Falcons on a roll since losing to Atlanta, 27-21, in Week 9. The Bucs haven't given up more than 17 points in any of their last three games and even blanked the 49ers in Week 11. They have 12 sacks and two interceptions in their last three games. However, the Tampa Bay defense did very little against Atlanta in Week 9. It got no sacks or turnovers and gave up 365 yards. The only reason the Bucs DST got any Fantasy points was because of Michael Spurlock's kickoff return for a touchdown.
Analysis: It won't be easy for the Bucs in Week 13 as they face one of the best teams in the NFL with a suspect situation at free safety. The Bucs will select a starting free safety for Sunday's game from a collection of players who have never started a game in the NFL. The list includes Corey Lynch, Vince Anderson and Larry Asante. While the Bucs defense has been playing well as of late, it's just too hard to go up against one of the best teams in the NFL. Consider other Fantasy options before settling on the Buccaneers DST in Week 13.
News: The Buccaneers DST held the Ravens to just 17 points during Week 12. Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, the Bucs could score just 10 points of their own in the 17-10 defeat. The Buccaneers DST allowed the Ravens to rack up 349 yards of total offense in the game and forced just one turnover on a Joe Flacco interception. Tampa Bay managed to sack Flacco four times in the game as Gerald McCoy had two of them. Tampa Bay's Cody Grimm had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury and could not return to the game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST had a great game Week 11 at San Francisco with six sacks, an interception and a shutout against the 49ers. They were solid once again in Week 12 and Fantasy owners are not going to be disgruntled after seeing 10 sacks and two picks in the last two games. The Buccaneers DST could be opportune once again Week 13 against Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Consider the Buccaneers DST a low-end Fantasy unit that is actually worth using right now if you need help in a pinch. Otherwise, you probably have a better option already on your roster.
News: Tampa Bay's DST pitched a shutout in Week 11 at San Francisco, but making it two in a row at Baltimore in Week 12 seems unlikely. The Ravens are averaging 23.6 points per game at home and on the season the offense has 24 touchdowns (16 passing, eight rushing). Moreover, the Bucs' run defense, which bottled up Frank Gore last week, remains ranked 29th against the run, and that's an area the Ravens should be able to effectively attack.
Analysis: Tampa Bay's defense has been a bit of a mystery -- in Week 10 we expected them to stop the Panthers in their tracks while playing at home and they struggled a bit. Then last week they went to San Francisco and thrashed the 49ers. This week it seems safe to expect the Bucs to struggle if only because the Ravens play well at home and have put up a lot of points with consistency. Owners should pass on the Buccaneers DST in Week 12 if possible. Other considerations include the Browns DST (vs. Carolina) and the Raiders DST (vs. Miami).
News: The Buccaneers defense came into the Week 11 game against the 49ers allowing nearly 23 points per game. They certainly lowered that rate on their way to shutting out San Francisco 21-0. The Bucs held the 49ers to just 189 yards of offense, only 71 on the ground. RB Frank Gore was limited to just 60 total yards (23 rushing). The plan was to stop (49ers RB) Frank Gore. "Like I told my guys, hes going to be in one of those A gaps and we had to meet him," coach Raheem Morris said about the game plan. "We had to either lose violently or win. Tampa Bay intercepted QB Troy Smith in the fourth quarter, when veteran CB Ronde Barber got his hands on the 40th pick of his career. The Bucs had an NFL-low eight sacks coming into the game, but they sacked Smith six times on Sunday. LB Geno Hayes forced WR Josh Morgan to fumble in the first quarter, and teammate Adam Hayward recovered.
Analysis: Tampa Bay was firing on all cylinders defensively, and it started with containing Gore on the ground and in the passing game. His 60 total yards were his lowest total of the season. After stopping Gore, the Bucs were able to sit back with their comfortable lead and jump on Smith's throws, keeping everything in front of them and intercepting one. In Week 12, the Bucs DST will face the Ravens in Baltimore, an offense that puts up more than 20 points per game. Consider them to be a No. 2 Fantasy unit heading into that matchup.
News: Tampa Bay's defense has been giving up 353.8 total yards of offense this year. They face a team in Week 11 with a backup quarterback, Troy Smith, under center. While Smith is coming off a career game in Week 10, the Buccaneers will have to keep the pressure on him to give their a team a chance. Tampa Bay rookie DL Gerald McCoy may have turned a corner last week with his best game of the season against Carolina. He recorded five tackles, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and a tackle for loss. "(McCoy) has steadily gotten better," coach Raheem Morris said. McCoy will play a big factor in the pass rush on Sunday.
Analysis: Tampa Bay has one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL, which isn't good with Frank Gore up next for them. They did well against Carolina last week, but the 49ers are a better team than the Panthers. But Fantasy owners should not view the Buccaneers DST as a worthy start for Week 11. Keep them reserved or on the waiver wire for now.
News: The Buccaneers were no more than adequate against the lowly Panthers in Week 10, allowing 16 points on 300 yards. They recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble but went without an interception even though they entered the game tied for the NFL lead with 14.
Analysis: The Buccaneers certainly didn't have a bad defensive performance against the visiting Panthers in Week 10, but they didn't take advantage of QB Jimmy Clausen to the extent they could have. The rookie entered the game with a 48.0 passer rating and was 8 of 18 for 47 yards and an interception in relief of Matt Moore last week. Still, the Buccaneers DST was decent enough for the Fantasy owners that took a flier on it as a sleeper this week. It'll likely go back to being a No. 2 Fantasy option at San Francisco in Week 11.
News: Coming off back-to-back games in which they allowed 27 points or more, the Buccaneers have a good chance of bouncing back defensively against the Panthers in Week 10. They'll be facing a rookie quarterback in Jimmy Clausen who has a 48.0 passer rating in six games and was 8 of 18 for 47 yards and an interception in relief of Matt Moore last week. The Panthers have allowed 20.9 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, tops in the NFL, and will likely be without two of their best players in running backs DeAngelo Williams (foot) and Jonathan Stewart (concussion).
Analysis: Expect a big day for the Buccaneers DST, which is tied for the league lead with 14 interceptions and could get a few more with Clausen forced to throw the ball. The defense sometimes struggles against the run, ranking 30th in the NFL with an average of 147.0 yards per game, but with Williams and Stewart sidelined, that shouldn't be such an issue this week. The Buccaneers might even be able to improve on their league-low six sacks. The Buccaneers DST has some obvious shortcomings that keep it from being a high-end Fantasy unit, but with a matchup as favorable as this one, it's as good of a sleeper as you'll find off the waiver wire at this point in the season.
News: The Buccaneers defense, which recorded four interceptions and scored two touchdowns last week at Arizona, wasn't nearly as opportunistic Week 9 at Atlanta. It allowed 27 points on 365 yards and didn't record a single sack or turnover.
Analysis: The Buccaneers had a tough task against QB Matt Ryan, who is incredibly efficient at home and didn't make any mistakes Sunday. The Buccaneers DST is good enough to take advantage of favorable matchups, which it has Week 10 against the Panthers, but given its inconsistencies, you should probably treat it as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Cornerback Aqib Talib had two of Tampa Bay's season-high four interceptions in a 38-35 victory at Arizona in Week 8 that gave the Buccaneers a share of the division lead and an NFL-high 14 interceptions. But they'll have trouble repeating that performance on the road in Week 9 against a Falcons team led by QB Matt Ryan, who has a career 16-1 record and 95.2 rating at home. Ryan is coming off his best game of the season Week 7 against the Bengals, when he went 24 of 33 for 299 yards and three touchdowns. And he might actually be the least of their concerns. Falcons RB Michael Turner could have a field day against a defense that ranks 30th against the run, allowing 149.4 yards per game and an NFL-high 5.2 yards per carry.
Analysis: DSTs average 8.4 Fantasy points per game against the Falcons, 10th-lowest in the NFL, and the Buccaneers don't have an especially good one. They just happened to take advantage of a Cardinals team shuffling between two shaky quarterbacks in Derek Anderson and Max Hall last week. Clearly, the Falcons are a completely different story with Ryan under center. The Buccaneers would need to get lucky with a few turnovers to make a serious Fantasy impact. Their DST is no more than a low-end No. 2 option this week.
News: Tampa Bay's DST picked off Arizona QBs Max Hall and Derek Anderson twice apiece. Geno Hayes started the day off with a 41-yard interception for a touchdown. Aqib Talib had two of Tampa's four interceptions, returning one 45 yards for a touchdown and saving the game with the other, and the Bucs came from behind in the final quarter for the fourth time this season in a 38-35 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. "It was just one of them days," Talib said, "right place at the right time." Tampa Bay DL Stylez White recorded his third sack of the season, giving the Bucs six on the year. The Cardinals managed 405 yards of total offense -- 100 yards rushing and 305 yards passing between Hall and Anderson.
Analysis: While giving up a lot of points and yards, the Buccaneers DST did score twice, make four interceptions and have one sack. Fantasy owners that use them as a bye-week replacement have to be happy with the outcome. Heading into Week 9, the Bucs face the Falcons, a team with a more complete offense than the Cardinals. Owners should look for another option as Tampa Bay should be viewed as a low-end option.
News: Tampa Bay travels to the desert on Sunday to face Arizona in Week 8. The Buccaneers have one of the better defenses against the pass, but one of the worst against the run. Fortunately, the Cardinals only rack up 237.8 total yards of offense per game -- 146.2 passing and 91.7 rushing. The Bucs are allowing 21.3 points per game, five points higher than the Cards average. The Bucs have 10 interceptions on the season, but just five sacks through seven weeks.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST has some good and bad qualities, which will drive Fantasy owners crazy. With a favorable matchup against the Cardinals and the fact six teams are on bye weeks, one would have to think Tampa Bay could have a solid outing in Week 8. That is why we think they are a low-end No. 1 DST option, but just for this week.
News: Tampa Bay came back from 17-3 down Week 7 in a win over the St. Louis Rams. The Buccaneers DST held the Rams scoreless in the second half and Tampa used field goals and a late Cadillac Williams receiving touchdown to win it 18-17. The Bucs DST limited the Rams to 285 total yards of offense in the game and forced one turnover. That was a Sam Bradford fumble. Bradford was sacked once by the Buccaneers DST.
Analysis: While the Buccaneers DST did limit points and yards in the Week 7 win, they only got one sack and one turnover forced and still didn't pick up many Fantasy points. The Bucs DST has been one of the worst in all of Fantasy all season and that isn't going to change in Week 8 at Arizona.
News: The Buccaneers DST enters Week 7 against St. Louis as a bottom-10 unit in terms of Fantasy production. The Bucs have been dismal defensively and that continued in Week 6 in a loss to the Saints. They gave up 31 points, 475 yards of offense and failed to get a sack in that game. In fact, the Buccaneers have only recorded a sack -- four of them -- in one game this season.
Analysis: Fantasy owners should be avoiding the Buccaneers DST at all costs. Even against the Rams in Week 7, Tampa Bay still doesn't have much of a chance at a solid game. The Rams are allowing the 10th-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs this season but that still doesn't make the Bucs a viable option.
News: Tampa Bay had an ugly game Week 6 at home against New Orleans. The Saints imposed their offensive will on the Buccaneers DST and Tampa Bay could not stop them one bit. The Buccaneers DST allowed 475 total yards of offense to New Orleans in the 31-6 defeat. The Bucs DST did force one turnover as they intercepted a Drew Brees deflected pass. They failed to register a sack of Brees in the game.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST forced just one turnover, didn't get a sack and couldn't limit anything in the Week 6 loss. They have failed to register a sack in four of the five games they have played and have not been able to limit anyone offensively. The Buccaneers DST may be the worst in Fantasy play and should not be used in Week 7 against the Rams.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers DST has not played like a top unit this season. In fact, after four games, the Bucs DST is among the bottom 12 Fantasy DSTs in terms of Fantasy points. That is bad news considering they host the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in Week 6.
Analysis: Tampa Bay managed three interceptions in the Week 5 game at Cincinnati and also recorded the team's first defensive touchdown of the season. As far as interceptions go, the only DST with more on the year is Atlanta's. That said, sacking the quarterback has been a problem for the Bucs and they will need to get at Drew Brees if they have any chance at stopping the Saints. New Orleans played poorly in Week 5, however, and afforded the Cardinals DST an amazing game with three interceptions, a sack, a fumble recovery and two defensive touchdowns. Brees will have to be on his game to avoid a similar fate but we still don't recommend the Bucs DST as a Fantasy-viable unit. There are just too many better options out there with better matchups in Week 6.
News: The Buccaneers DST gave up 21 points and 358 yards to the Bengals in Week 5, but they made up for those numbers by picking off QB Carson Palmer three times and returning one for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Bucs DST certainly isn't one of the better units in the league, but they forced Palmer into the mistakes that he's become known for recently and helped improved Tampa Bay to 3-1 as a team. In Week 6, Tampa might have a tough time against the Saints, although New Orleans hasn't look great lately by any means. Continue to worry about this unit only in the deepest of Fantasy formats.
News: The Buccaneers spent their bye week analyzing a 38-13 loss to Pittsburgh in Week 3 in which they allowed former fourth-string quarterback Charlie Batch to complete 70.6 percent of his passes and throw for three touchdowns. Facing the vaunted Bengals passing game in Week 5 led by Carson Palmer, Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, coach Raheem Morris knows his team faces a tough test. "These guys will take what you give them," Morris said. "You've got to be able to put some pressure in Carson Palmer's face. You've got to be able to get to him, which we need to get better at, which you can see from the first three-game review."
Analysis: The responsibility of stopping Owens and Ochocinco could fall on defensive backs Aqib Talib, Ronde Barber and Cody Grimm with safety Tanard Jackson suspended for the season after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. "They're a passing team," Grimm said. "It's a lot different than the Steelers but it will be exciting. It's definitely different than most teams but I'm sure Coach Morris will dial up something nice and we'll have a good gameplan." The Bengals are averaging 349.8 yards (10th) and 19.8 points per game (14th). The Bucs are at best a middle of the pack team in both scoring and total defense. You should probably consider starting other Fantasy options before settling on the Bucs DST in Week 5.
News: The Bucs DST had its worst outing of the season in Week 3 by far, allowing 38 points in the loss to the Steelers. The game started off well for the defense when CB Aquib Talib intercepted QB Charlie Batch on his first attempt of the game. It was all downhill from there as the Steelers exploded for 21 points in the second quarter. Steelers WR Mike Wallace got behind the defense for two deep touchdowns (46 and 41 yards) that blew the game open. RB Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 143 yards on just 19 attempts. LB Quincy Black added an interception late in the game. The Bucs DST registered no sacks and allowed 387 total yards.
Analysis: The defense allowed 21 total points in the first two games, so the 38 allowed in Week 3 is tough to swallow for the young defense. Rookie S Cody Grimm, in for suspended S Tanard Jackson, allowed Wallace's first TD when he turned around late. The pass defense was suspect, allowing Batch to throw three first-half TDs. The Bucs have a bye week to make adjustments before traveling to Cincinnati to face the Bengals, who's offense is struggling to find an identity after three games. Still the Bengals are 2-1 and finding ways to win. The blowout loss to the Steelers is a setback, so consider the Bucs DST to be a low-end Fantasy option in Week 5.
News: Bucs S Tanard Jackson was suspended for at least a year on Wednesday. Jackson, a fourth year pro, violated the leagues substance abuse policy for the second consecutive year. On the field, Jackson intercepted five passes in 12 games last season and eight tackles through two games in 2010. General Manager Mark Dominik said the starter for Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh will take a few days to determine. The Steelers are not a prolific team through the air, totaling just 232 yards in two games.
Analysis: The much-improved Bucs defense loses some play-making ability without Jackson in the lineup. Still, the Bucs are using their opponent, Pittsburgh as motivation. DE Stylez G. White told the teams official website, "It's going to be a challenge for us, not only taking on their offense but to see who's playing better defense." So far in 2010, the Steelers have allowed 20 points to opposing offenses, the Bucs have allowed 21. Consider the Bucs DST as a Fantasy sleeper since Pittsburgh QB Charlie Batch is making his first start since 2007.
News: The NFL has suspended Tanard Jackson for the remainder of the 2010 season and the start of the 2011 season for a third violation of the substance abuse policy. He is eligible for reinstatement beginning on September 22, 2011. Sabby Piscitelli and/or Cody Grimm will replace him in the starting lineup going forward.
Analysis: Jackson had been a strong contributor to the Buccaneers' secondary with eight solo tackles. The Buccaneers DST was considered to be a sleeper unit for their Week 3 matchup vs. Pittsburgh, but this definitely takes some shine off of them. Consider them a low-end option for the upcoming week, particularly if you're desperate for a DST.
News: The Buccaneers allowed just seven points to the Carolina Panthers in Carolina in a 20-7 Week 2 win. They forced two turnovers (an interception and a fumble) while managing four sacks. They allowed a 37-yard touchdown to WR Steve Smith and have given up just 21 combined points in the first two games of the season.
Analysis: The Bucs have not exactly played two offensive juggernauts to begin the season in the Browns and Panthers, but they've done their part to re-establish what had been a struggling defensive unit. They'll face a Steelers team in Week 3 that has their own offensive issues thanks to the absence of Ben Roethlisberger, having totaled just 34 points combined in the first two weeks of the season. Consider the Bucs a sleeper unit for deeper formats in Week 3, but they aren't yet a weekly starting unit.
News: The Buccaneers held the Browns to just 14 points in their regular season opener in Week 1. They allowed 340 net offensive yards while forcing two interceptions and one fumble. They allowed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi and a 10-yard run to Peyton Hillis.
Analysis: The Bucs were prone to giving up big plays last season and it appeared that would be a recurring theme again when Massaquoi broke loose for another big play early in Sunday's game. The defense settled in, although we must admit the fact that they were playing the Cleveland Browns played a major role in their being able to keep them to just 14 points. This is a promising start, but we wouldn't proclaim them as a must-start unit by any means. Rather they are a matchup-based play in standard formats and will be more useful once the bye weeks come into play. The Bucs could become a popular pickup off the waiver wire this week, facing the Panthers on the road in Week 2, if Matt Moore is ruled out of the game due to the concussion he suffered on Sunday. If he doesn't play, the Bucs would be up against first-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
News: Buccaneers LB Barrett Ruud acknowledged this week that this year's defense will look a lot like the old Tampa 2 defense under Monte Kiffin -- with a few tweaks. "We feel great about this scheme," Ruud said. The Bucs will open the season with an apparently favorable matchup against the Browns. Cleveland finished last season ranked dead last in the NFL in total offense. They did finish the preseason ranked ninth overall in total offense, however.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense is available in a majority of leagues off the waiver wire, coming off a season in which they finished ranked 27th overall in team defense. However, despite a decent preseason for the Browns offense, the Bucs are faced with what appears to be a very favorable Week 1 matchup on paper. Ruud's allusion to the old Tampa 2 days under Kiffin may be a bit optimistic, but Fantasy owners looking to take a chance on a replacement defense if their No. 1 unit is in for a tough matchup could choose to exploit this game against a weaker offense for the Bucs.
News: After ranking near the bottom of the league in scoring defense (25.0 ppg) in 2009, the Bucs have been a different team in the 2010 preseason. Tampa Bay hasn't allowed an opponent to put more than 19 points on the board and rank fourth in scoring defense (14.7 ppg). Tampa Bay has also forced six turnovers in three games.
Analysis: The Bucs added some youth on the defensive line through the draft, bringing in Gerald McCoy and Brian Price. The defense severely underachieved in 2009, it's first season under head coach Raheem Morris. It was quite shocking too seeing how Morris cut his teeth under defensive guru Monte Kiffin. The Bucs are looking to improve in 2010, but the team's DST is still a tough draft choice in Fantasy. The Bucs DST is more of a waiver-wire addition or bye-week replacement to begin the season.
News: Warren Sapp, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection with the Bucs, believes both Gerald McCoy and Brian Price -- the Bucs' top two picks in April's draft -- have the ability to be impact players in the Tampa-2 defensive scheme that coach Raheem Morris revived late last season. Both are stout defensive tackles who have pass-rushing ability, a must according to the principles of the scheme. As a first-round pick out of Oklahoma, McCoy will be the focal point of a defensive overhaul, however Sapp noted that Price will be one of the keys to the former Sooners star fulfilling his potential as a pro. "The thing is he's not by himself. This kid Price can play, too," Sapp said. The former Bucs star said he flourished, in part, because of the relationships he developed with tackles he played beside. "It wasn't just me. They wanted to make it out to be me," Sapp said. "I was a pretty good player, but I had some people in there who were willing to do grunt work, too. And now, (McCoy) has somebody in there who's more than a grunt and can do some great work for him."
Analysis: McCoy is a tremendous, athletic defensive tackle whose agility makes him a really good fit for the Bucs' scheme. Price isn't quite as athletic but should still be a good situational run stuffer until he gains more experience. While the duo could make an impact on the D-line, they won't improve the Buccaneers from the bottom of the DST rankings. They still have work to do in their secondary and at linebacker before becoming a considerable Fantasy option, so expect them to be available off waivers during the season as a possible one-week replacement.
News: Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy was the Buccaneers' first round pick (third overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft. He is expected to fit right in to their defensive line and start for them this season. The Bucs actually double-dipped at DT, taking UCLA tackle Brian Price with their second-round pick, thus giving them a dangerous young duo for opponents to run against in the future. Tampa Bay also drafted Vanderbilt DB Myron Lewis (third round), Virginia Tech DB Cody Grimm (seventh round), FSU LB Dekoda Watson (seventh round) and Stanford DE Erik Lorig (seventh round). Bucs head coach Raheem Morris conjured up a thought from former Buccaneers defensive line coach Rod Marinelli when describing why he got two D-linemen: "He used to say, 'If we're playing our game up front, we can give everybody else behind us a pink slip and we can go to work and end this game ourselves. That's never been more true. You get those guys up front humming, and that makes your linebackers better. That makes your secondary better. That makes everybody better."
Analysis: McCoy is a tremendous, athletic defensive tackle whose agility makes him a really good fit for the Bucs' Cover-2 defensive scheme.
News: Raheem Morris will return for a second season as coach of the Buccaneers. The Bucs went 3-13 in the 33-year-old Morris' first season. The club's worst finish since 1991 fueled speculation that the Glazer family might consider a change. "We are committed to the plan that we began 12 months ago with coach Morris, and we look forward to building on the pieces that were put in place this season," team co-chairman Joel Glazer said.
Analysis: Morris should continue to be the driving force behind the Bucs' defense, which finished the season fairly strong against the pass but awful against the run. Look for the Bucs to address that in the offseason. For now, this DST isn't worth drafting in Fantasy play.
News: The Buccaneers DST had a sack and two interceptions with a forced fumble against the Falcons in Week 17.
Analysis: This will be an interesting defensive unit to watch this offseason since it has some quality players but clearly isn't close to being worth drafting in 2010, at least not at this point. Look for the Buccaneers DST off waivers in Fantasy play next year.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used their special teams to beat the New Orleans Saints in overtime in Week 16. Tampa Bay got a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter that tied the score late in the game. The Saints had a chance to win but missed a field goal as time expired. Tampa Bay won in the overtime period, 20-17. The Bucs DST limited the Saints offense to 373 yards and forced a fumble from Marques Colston as the lone turnover forced. The Bucs DST sacked QB Drew Brees just once in the game.
Analysis: The Bucs DST really wasn't that great in Week 16 outside of the punt return touchdown. The Buccaneers DST, for all of its prestige in the past, hasn't offered much in Fantasy this season, usually allowing more than 20 points. This game might help it get back on the right track, but Week 17 against Atlanta could be a tough game and makes them a low-end unit.
News: The Buccaneers had perhaps their best defensive performance of the season Week 15 at Seattle, forcing Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck to turn the ball over five times, four on interceptions. They also recorded a sack, limiting the Seahawks to seven points on 380 yards.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST, for all of its prestige in the past, hasn't offered much in Fantasy this season, usually allowing more than 20 points. This game might help it get back on the right track, but Week 16 at New Orleans certainly isn't the time to give it a second chance.
News: Tampa Bay was manhandled on Sunday of Week 14 in a 26-3 loss to the New York Jets. The Buccaneers DST gave up 310 yards of offense to the Jets. Tampa managed just one sack of QB Kellen Clemens in the game and forced just one turnover on a Shonn Greene fumble.
Analysis: Overall, the Bucs D has been a basically unusable unit in Fantasy play this season and that is putting it nicely. This is not your older brother's Bucs. The Buccaneers DST should not be used in Week 15 at Seattle. The Seahawks aren't that good but should be able to run all over the Bucs.
News: The Buccaneers DST held the Panthers to 16 points and 309 yards in a Week 13 loss. They also managed to tally an interception and a sack.
Analysis: Overall, the Bucs D has been a basically unusable unit in Fantasy play this season, but they do play well when they're not outmatched. In Week 14 they will host the Jets, who aren't an offensive juggernaut, but there are better options out there.
News: Tampa Bay did a nice job limited the Falcons to just 297 total yards in the Week 12 contest between the two teams. The Bucs also took away two of Atlanta's top offensive weapons as they hurt RB Michael Turner and QB Matt Ryan in the game. Unfortunately, backup QB Chris Redman engineered a game-winning drive the closing minutes and the Bucs still lost the game, 20-17. The Buccaneers DST forced one turnover on a Jason Snelling fumble and also sacked Falcons quarterbacks six times in the game. Stylez White had 2.5 sacks and Tim Crowder had 1.5.
Analysis: The Bucs DST limited the yardage but not the points and could not win the game. The six sacks were great but they only managed a single turnover forced. Ultimately, the Buccaneers DST shouldn't be considered for Fantasy use for Week 13 at Carolina.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that the Buccaneers have relieved defensive coordinator Jim Bates of his duties and will likely revert back to their traditional Cover 2 defense. Bates had changed the scheme this season but the Bucs have found themselves ranked last vs. the run and 14th vs. the pass with 22 passing touchdowns scored on them. There's no word on who will call the defensive plays.
Analysis: The Buccaneers likely realize that their season is lost at 1-9 and will begin playing with the future in mind. This might include going younger on defense and seeing if the Cover 2 scheme works with most of the players they have. Ultimately, the Buccaneers DST shouldn't be considered for Fantasy use.
News: The Buccaneers defense not only got run over by the Saints running game and beaten by Drew Brees' arm for three touchdowns, but they failed to accumulate any stats. They didn't have a single sack, interception or forced fumble in their Week 11 loss.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST should not be considered useful against the Falcons in Week 12. Keep them on waivers.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 25 points and 374 yards in a Week 10 loss to the Dolphins. Tampa Bay made one interception and recovered a fumble, but failed to record a sack.
Analysis: The Bucs DST went nuts in Week 9, but you knew there was little chance of them repeating that performance again in Week 10. Things get a lot harder in Week 11 when New Orleans comes to town, so continue to ignore the Tampa Bay unit in all leagues.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 28 points and 404 yards to the Packers in Week 9, but scored a touchdown on a blocked punt, made three interceptions, returning one for a score, and tallied six sacks.
Analysis: Well, talk about a performance out of nowhere. Maybe it was the creamsicle jerseys! The Bucs had been getting abused all season, but showed up in a big way on Sunday as they picked up their first win. Don't get too excited about their prospects the rest of the season though, as they're unlikely to have another game like this again in 2009. Tampa Bay visits Miami in Week 10.
News: The Buccaneers DST gave up 35 points and 414 yards to the Patriots as New England ran away with an easy victory in London. Tampa Bay did managed to intercept Tom Brady twice and record one sack.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is not worth touching in Fantasy play unless the matchup is a complete gem. Tampa Bay is off in Week 8, so just continue to leave them on waivers in most leagues.
News: Tampa Bay lost at home against Carolina Week 6. This game was ugly. The Bucs dropped the game by the score of 28-21 and allowed the Panthers 322 yards of total offense. However, Jake Delhomme managed just 65 yards passing. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart each topped 100 yards as the Bucs could not stop the ground game. The Buccaneers DST sacked Delhomme just once but did force him into three big turnovers. Tanard Jackson intercepted his 4th-quarter pass and took it 26 yards for a defensive touchdown. The Bucs also scored on a 97-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Analysis: Tampa Bay did little well in the loss Week 6 but their DST stats still looked pretty good. The two DST touchdowns and three turnovers will accomplish that. Still, that was a lot of luck there and we don't see them doing it against the Patriots in Week 7. They are not a recommended DST unit for Week 7.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 33 points and 325 yards to the Eagles in a Week 5 loss. They did managed to record three sacks and force a fumble.
Analysis: The Bucs had a decent outing in Week 4 against the Redskins, but the Eagles did what good teams should do against average teams like Tampa Bay. In Week 6, Tampa Bay will host Carolina, who aren't much better than the Redskins. Still, the Bucs will just be nothing more than a low-end bye-week replacement option in deeper formats.
News: In a battle between two offensively struggling teams, Tampa Bay lost the Week 4 battle at Washington. The Redskins put up just 16 points against a Bucs defense that has been porous this season and Washington racked up just 277 total yards in the 16-13 win. The Buccaneers DST pressured quarterback Jason Campbell to no end but only finished with 3 sacks. They did force Campbell to lose a fumble, however, and Aqib Talib came up huge with 3 big interceptions. In all, the Bucs DST forced 4 turnovers and finished with 3 sacks. They also blocked an extra-point attempt as Ronde Barber got a finger on Shaun Suisham's PAT in the 3rd quarter. They limited the yards and points and had a decent day despite not gaining the victory.
Analysis: The Buccaneers came into the game Week 4 with a decent pass defense but absolutely no rush defense. They let an injured Clinton Portis near 100 yards. We think the Redskins' offense is just terrible and don't necessarily laud the Bucs for their solid effort Week 4. With a game against an excellent offensive team in Philadelphia in Week 5, we cannot recommend the Bucs DST for use in any Fantasy leagues.
News: The Buccaneers DST gave up 24 points and 397 yards to the Giants in a Week 3 loss. They also failed to produce a turnover.
Analysis: The Bucs are barely worth owning in Fantasy play right now, although they do get a favorable matchup in Week 4 at Washington, so maybe give them one more shot before thinking about sending them to the waiver wire in deeper leagues.
News: The Buccaneers announced Tuesday that they have placed safety Jermaine Phillips on IR and released safety Steve Cargile. Phillips was injured in the Buccaneers Week 2 contest at Buffalo. He started both games this season, totaling 11 tackles. Cargile resigned with the Buccaneers on September 19 after being released on September 5. He appeared on special teams at Buffalo.
Analysis: It's safe to release Phillips in all leagues, and the Bucs DST is now even worse off than it was after the first two weeks of the season. Keep the Bucs DST reserved for Week 3 against the Giants.
News: The Buccaneers defense struggled in Week 2's game against the Bills, allowing 33 points in the game. Fred Jackson in particular torched the defense, gaining 163 yards on 28 carries. The team rushed for a total of 218 yards in the game on 35 tries. Trent Edwards threw for 230 yards in the game on 21 for 31 passing, throwing two TD passes and one interception.
Analysis: The Bucs defense is in a transition period and did not look very good against the Bills' less than potent offense. They will likely allow plenty of points and yards this year, so don't get them active as anything other than a low-end Fantasy option. They are not a recommended unit Week 3 against the Giants.
News: It was not a pretty coaching debut for the Bucs' Raheem Morris in Week 1 against the Cowboys. Dallas slaughtered Tampa Bay, 34-21, and the Cowboys offense accomplished quite a lot against the Bucs defense. QB Tony Romo threw for a career-high 353 yards as Dallas rolled up 462 yards of offense. Tampa Bay struggled to pressure Romo, sacking him just once. Tampa Bay also forced no turnovers in the game.
Analysis: Even though Morris was an understudy to former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, we can't look at the Bucs defense as the same until this new unit proves themselves under their new head coach. The Bucs DST has low-end Fantasy appeal until they right the ship. Tampa Bay plays Buffalo in Week 2.
News: Buccaneers safety Tanard Jackson on Tuesday was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substances of abuse policy. The third-year pro's suspension begins Sept. 5 and will continue through the Bucs' Oct. 4 game against the Washington Redskins. He will be eligible to return on Oct. 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Analysis: This will hurt the Bucs' secondary, which was fairly thin at safety to begin with. A lot of people will overrate this DST because they've been so good in the past, but with a new defensive scheme and some question marks at linebacker -- and now at safety -- they're a risky option. We wouldn't consider them a No. 1 option.
News:Barrett Ruud chooses his words carefully. Ruud is talking about his unsuccessful attempt to accelerate progress on a contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The fifth-year middle linebacker is the team's undisputed leader on defense and doesn't want to say or do anything that may become a distraction. "I know I have one year left. The best thing for me and the team is to have a great year," he said. "If you play well individually, the defense plays great and the team wins games, only good things will happen."
Analysis: With Derrick Brooks no longer the focal point after being released in February as part of a plan to field a younger roster under first-year coach Raheem Morris, Ruud not only is responsible for making defensive calls on the field, but is becoming a leader off the field. We still consider Ruud a No. 1 LB in IDP leagues, and he should help the Bucs remain a good DST option worth a late-round pick.
News:Gaines Adams is the first to admit he's underachieved with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So when coach Raheem Morris singled out the defensive end on the opening day of training camp, saying Adams would be a flop if he doesn't post double-digit sacks this season, the third-year pro agreed. "In football you need that. Players tend to get in their own element and do things that they want to do. They need to be called out sometimes. He's the coach. Whatever he says, goes," Adams said. "I take it as a challenge. Being drafted fourth overall, that comes with the territory. It's year three for me. Obviously it's time for me to step up." Reviving a once-revered pass rush is one of Tampa Bay's top priorities this summer. The Bucs feel one of the keys is for the 6-foot-5, 258-pound Adams to be more physical while relying less on speed to try to get to the quarterback. "I've got no problem telling Gaines: 'Hey, if you don't do it this year, you're going to be considered a bust," Morris said. "I told him that in a team meeting. I tell him that every once in a while when we walk off together, and he can't wait. He's embracing it and going to come out ready to play."
Analysis: Adams had six sacks as a rookie and 6 1/2 a year ago, when an anemic pass rush contributed to a late-season collapse that cost the team a playoff berth. Morris hopes a new system, installed by defensive coordinator Jim Bates and replacing the old Tampa 2 scheme, will help Adams become a more productive player. If there's any consolation for the Bucs, three other defensive linemen selected in the first round in 2007 have not made a major impact, either -- though none were picked as high as Adams at No. 4. Jamaal Anderson (Atlanta), Adam Carriker (St. Louis) and Jarvis Moss (Denver) have combined for fewer sacks (12) in two years than Adams (12 1/2) has by himself. Adams is merely a Fantasy sleeper heading into 2009. The Bucs DST is more of a No. 2 Fantasy option until we see how they adjust under Morris.
News: After a futile attempt to accelerate progress toward a contract extension with the Buccaneers, LB Barrett Ruud is back on the practice field with his teammates. The fifth-year pro skipped all 14 of the club's voluntary offseason workouts, however he's participating in this week's mandatory minicamp that wraps up the squad's preparation for the start of training camp on July 31. "I was hoping to sort of speed things along a little bit," Rudd said. Rudd is scheduled to earn about $1.6 million this fall in the final season of a contract he signed as a rookie in 2005. He's led the Bucs in tackles the past two years and is the club's lone returning starter at linebacker. "I'd like to be here for a long time. I've really enjoyed the organization. It's a first-class organization and a great community, and I like my teammates," Ruud said. "In that respect, I am disappointed things haven't progressed."
Analysis: Coach Raheem Morris said he's excited to have Ruud with the team for minicamp and that he doesn't anticipate the middle linebacker having any difficulty catching up on what he missed during OTAs. We still consider Ruud a No. 1 LB in IDP leagues, and he should help the Bucs remain a good DST option worth a late-round pick.
News: The Buccaneers made some startling cuts on Wednesday, releasing the following veterans: RB Warrick Dunn, WRs Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard and LBs Derrick Brooks and Cato June. Brooks began to show his age in '08, ending his 12-season streak of 100-plus total tackles with 73 combined with one interception, one pass defensed and seven interceptions. June totaled 67 tackles with an interception and two passes defensed as he underperformed for the second straight season with Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Brooks and June both saw their play decline over the last two seasons, and it was noticeable when reviewing the defensive unit. The Bucs could use a shot of youth this offseason, and they've already begun with Morris coaching the team. We still view the Bucs DST as a very low-end No. 1 DST option that will be drafted on the basis of what they've done rather than what they're expected to do. They could fall out of the Top 12 if they don't address the holes they've made for themselves properly.
News: New Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris made the first major addition to his staff on Thursday, hiring Jim Bates to replace him as the team's defensive coordinator. Bates, who has been in coaching 39 years, has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL for eight seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (1994), Miami Dolphins (2000-04), Green Bay Packers (2005) and most recently the Denver Broncos (2007). Bates also was the Dolphins' interim head coach for the final seven games of 2004. Under Bates, the Dolphins ranked sixth in the league in total defense in 2000, fifth in 2001, third in 2002, 10th in 2003 and eighth in 2004. The year he left (2005), Miami slipped to 18th.
Analysis: Bates is a good motivator and will likely be more of that kind of a coach than a preacher of the Tampa-2 scheme, though he's certainly capable of mastering it. The Bucs could use a shot of youth this offseason, and they've already begun with Morris coaching the team. We still view the Bucs DST as a very low-end No. 1 DST option that will be drafted on the basis of what they've done rather than what they're expected to do.
News: Raheem Morris is young, energetic and confident he's the right choice as new coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 32-year-old oozed enthusiasm during a news conference to introduce him as Jon Gruden's successor on Saturday, even if he did not offer specifics about his plan to help the Bucs climb back among the NFL's elite. Gruden was fired late Friday night. Morris takes over a team that won three division titles under Gruden but hasn't won a playoff game since capturing the franchise's only NFL championship in January 2003. The Gruden era ended with four consecutive losses that denied the Bucs a postseason spot following a 9-3 start. He's expected to keep the Bucs defense in their 4-3 formation with the world-famous Tampa-2 scheme.
Analysis: While the Buccaneers offense will surely change, the defense will remain the same. They could use a shot of youth this offseason, and they've already begun with Morris. We still view the Bucs DST as a very low-end No. 1 DST option that will be drafted on the basis of what they've done rather than what they're expected to do.
News: The Buccaneers DST gave up 31 points and 337 yards to the lowly Raiders in a Week 17 loss that eliminated Tampa Bay from playoff contention. The Bucs made one interception and a sack.
Analysis: After being a solid No. 1 Fantasy unit all season, the Buccaneers closed the year with two awful outings. They did nothing against the Chargers in Week 16 and when you give up 31 points to the Raiders, you know things aren't going well. The loss of Monte Kiffin to the Tennessee Volunteers will be a big one, and there will be question marks abound heading into 2009 about this DST. They will likely be drafted, but their days as a top-10 outfit could be over.
News: Secondary coach Raheem Morris will take over as defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay in 2009, ensuring continuity next season with Monte Kiffin leaving the NFL to join his son, Lane, at the University of Tennessee. Morris is in his sixth season as a Bucs assistant, second as defensive backs coach. He initially joined Gruden's staff as a defensive quality assistant in 2002, was a defensive assistant in 2003 and assistant defensive backs coach for the next two seasons before spending one year as defensive coordinator at Kansas State. The Bucs ranked in the top five in total defense each of Morris' first five seasons in Tampa Bay, including No. 1 in 2002, when Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl. They're ranked ninth heading into Sunday's regular-season finale. "He knows the kind of players we're looking for," head coach Jon Gruden said. "He knows the routine here in terms of what it takes to play in this system. I've been impressed with him throughout the six, seven years I've been with him. ... I think our players will respond to him."
Analysis: The move ensures Morris, 32, will stay in Tampa Bay unless he receives a head coaching offer, which is possible since he's considered one of the brightest young minds in the NFL today. This should ensure that the Bucs' defense remains strong and well entrenched in their Cover-2 scheme. As for Week 17, they remain a low-end No. 1 option against the Raiders.
News: The Buccaneers DST had one sack and no turnovers Sunday against San Diego. Jimmy Wilkerson had the sack, and Clifton Smith had seven kickoff returns for 205.1 yards and one punt return for 8 yards. Ike Hilliard also had one punt return for 8 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs DST should bounce back in Week 17 against Oakland. Consider the unit a No. 1 option against the Raiders.
News: Bucs LB Derrick Brooks practiced in full on Friday after being limited on Thursday and rested on Wednesday and looks as if he'll play vs. the Chargers in Week 16. Brooks has been dealing with a rib injury suffered in last week's game at the Falcons. "He looks well," coach Jon Gruden said Friday. "It does appear our captain will be back. It's a credit to him." Additionally, defensive tackles Chris Hovan and Jovan Haye are questionable with knee injuries but didn't miss a day of practice all week. DEs Gaines Adams and Stylez G. White are also questionable after being limited in practice all week.
Analysis: Assuming the defensive tackles are healthy, the Bucs' run defense woes should stop this week even with LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers coming to the Pirate Ship. Re-consider this unit as a low-end No. 1 option for their upcoming game.
News: Following their Week 15 loss at Atlanta, Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin announced he will join his son's staff for the Tennessee Volunteers next season. Kiffin told his players after the game and his assistants last week. The Bucs are losing Kiffin after this year, but they've lost safety Jermaine Phillips for the season with a broken right forearm, and linebacker Derrick Brooks is questionable for their game vs. the Chargers in Week 16 with an unspecified rib injury.
Analysis: The Bucs DST has taken a tailspin in the last two weeks, struggling to stop the run at Carolina and then at Atlanta. LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers are coming in Week 16, and they'll be sure to test the Bucs, particularly if DTs Jovan Haye and Chris Hovan aren't playing (Hovan missed all of Week 16, Haye missed most of the game). Consider other options before settling on the Buccaneers DST in Week 16 -- there's a chance they could really have a hard time with the Bolts.
News: The Buccaneers defense handled Falcons QB Matt Ryan well enough Week 15 at Atlanta, intercepting him twice and sacking him once. It allowed only 13 points on 373 yards. It also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST rebounded nicely from a poor game against the Saints. It has a decent matchup against Philip Rivers and the Chargers in Week 16, so keep it active in Fantasy.
News: The Buccaneers defense allowed a season-high 38 points on 464 yards, including 301 combined rushing yards to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, at Carolina in Week 14. It recorded two interceptions and one sack.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST didn't have a particularly good performance against the Saints last week either, but this game was nothing short of a disaster. Consider this one game just a blip on the radar, though. The Buccaneers DST remains too valuable to sit and should remain active for Week 15 at Atlanta.
News: In the Buccaneers' 23-20 win vs. the Saints in Week 13, the DST was mostly quiet, totaling one sack and three interceptions in the game. Two of the three INTs were in the end zone, saving the team points against them and being a key factor in the outcome of the game.
Analysis: Not a brilliant game for the Buccaneers DST, but they should continue to be a good middle- to low-end option even though they'll be at Carolina in Week 14.
News: The Buccaneers DST held Detroit to 20 points and 207 yards in a Week 12 victory, scoring twice on a punt return and an interception. They finished with one fumble recovery, two interceptions and four sacks.
Analysis: The Buccaneers are a top-10 Fantasy DST right now and should be owned in 100 percent of leagues. They have had a few monster weeks this season and have a relatively easy schedule the rest of the way. Consider them a solid No. 1 option in Week 13 vs. New Orleans.
News: The Buccaneers DST held the Vikings to 13 points and 210 yards of offense in a Week 11 victory. While they didn't make an interception, they did force a fumble and recorded five sacks.
Analysis: The Bucs haven't been racking up the points recently, but the five sacks on Sunday were nice, and owners in leagues that reward fewer points and yardage allowed were richly rewarded. In Fantasy Week 12, the Bucs could be in for a huge week when they host the Lions, although Detroit looked a little improved on Sunday against the Panthers. Get Tampa Bay active in all formats regardless.
News: Monte Kiffin is not one to throw around a bunch of superlatives when he talks about a young football player. Ask him about Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, though, and the architect of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense is tempted to let go. "He's big, he's fast, he's powerful, he's can stop on a dime, he's quick, he loves football, he plays hard," Kiffin said before pausing to take a breath. "If you hear anything bad about this guy that he can't do, let me know. I can't find anything on tape. He's a premier back." Kiffin and his proud defense get their first close look at the NFL's leading rusher when the Bucs (6-3) host the Vikings (5-4) on Sunday, with Peterson aiming for his fifth consecutive 100-yard game.
Analysis: Since entering the NFL in 2007, the 23-year-old blend of speed and power has averaged a league-best 102.4 yards per game. He's coming off a 192-yard performance against Green Bay and feels like he's getting stronger as the season progresses. "I never (talk up) backs ... out of respect for your Walter Paytons, your Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smiths of the world, and people like that. But he has the potential," Kiffin said. "In a year and a half, you can tell he's a special guy. There's no doubt about it." Tampa Bay's defense has been among the best in the NFL for much of Kiffin's 13-season tenure with the Bucs. The unit has limited opponents to 3.8 yards per carry this year and hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher until Kansas City's Jamaal Charles topped the mark two weeks ago. After stewing over the sub-par outing during last week's bye, the Bucs D has a chance to redeem itself against one of the best. Consider the Bucs DST a viable Fantasy option despite a tough matchup.
News: Against a Chiefs team considered offensively inept with inexperienced QB Tyler Thigpen at the helm, the Buccaneers gave up 27 points on 384 yards Week 9 at Kansas City. They recorded one sack and recovered a fumble. They also got a special teams touchdown on a kick return by Clifton Smith.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST usually eats young quarterbacks like Thigpen for breakfast, but it didn't shut down the Chiefs this Sunday. Still, it remains one of the more consistent units in Fantasy and a must-start in all leagues. The Buccaneers have a bye in Week 10 before hosting the Vikings in Week 11.
News: The Bucs DST had three sacks and no turnovers Sunday at Dallas. Gaines Adams had two sacks. Clifton Smith led the Bucs on special teams with three kickoff returns for 62.1 yards and five punt returns for 82 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs DST is a solid Fantasy option and a must-start unit in Week 9 at Kansas City.
News: The Bucs DST played well Sunday against Seattle but didn't produce many stats to help Fantasy owners. Tampa Bay had an interception and a fumble recovery but no sacks. The Bucs nearly held the Seahawks to just three points before Seneca Wallace threw a late touchdown to John Carlson. Dexter Jackson led the Bucs in returns with one kickoff return for 4 yards and two punt returns for 3 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs DST is a solid unit and typically produces better Fantasy stats. But at Dallas in Week 8, even with Brad Johnson potentially starting another game, might be a daunting task since the Cowboys have so many weapons. Consider the Bucs DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Buccaneers held the Carolina Panthers to 282 yards of offense and just three points in Week 6. They intercepted three passes and while they did not sack QB Jake Delhomme, they did add a special teams touchdown when rookie Geno Hayes blocked a punt, recovered it and ran it in for a 22-yard touchdown to open up the scoring.
Analysis: The Bucs defense kept everything in front of them against the Panthers and did not allow Mushin Muhammad or Steve Smith to beat them deep. They continue to have one of the better defensive schemes in all football and should be considered a must-start in Fantasy. Their matchup against a weak Seattle offense in Week 7 bodes well for them.
News: The Bucs held to the Broncos, one of the best offenses in the NFL, to just 16 points and 333 yards Week 5, but Denver still edged out a 16-13 win. The Bucs didn't force an interception or sack QB Jay Cutler, and got only a fumble recovery after Marcus Thomas picked off a pass and then fumbled the ball back to Tampa Bay on the return.
Analysis: Tampa Bay did a good job of containing one of the best offenses in the NFL and shutdown Brandon Marshall, who had just three catches for 25 yards. But since they couldn't pressure Cutler, he still managed to lead his team to a win. Tampa Bay still has one of the better defenses in the NFL and the Bucs DST remains a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 6 against the Panthers.
News: The Buccaneers DST held Green Bay to 181 yards and 21 points and made three sacks, three interceptions and turned a fumble recovery into a touchdown in a Week 4 win over the Packers.
Analysis: The Bucs DST is a solid unit worth playing in all leagues when the matchup is in their favor. In Week 5 they will visit Denver, and should probably be considered a low-end starting option for that matchup.
News: The Buccaneers DST scored on a Gaines Adams interception-return for a touchdown and added three sacks and another interception at Chicago in Week 3.
Analysis: The Bucs DST had a favorable matchup against the up-and-down Bears offense, but they'll have their hands full vs. the Packers in Week 4. Consider other options before starting them next week.
News: The Buccaneers DST held Atlanta to 234 yards and nine points in a Week 2 win. They also forced two interceptions and tallied four sacks.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST bounced back from a mauling at the hands of the Saints in Week 1 to make the Falcons look like the offensively-challenged team they are in Week 2. Tampa Bay will face another sub-par offense in Week 3 as they travel to Chicago. Continue to consider them a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in all formats, but one with nice upside in the period.
News: The St. Petersburg Times reports Bucs LB Derrick Brooks will not take a single repetition at practice this week because of a strained right hamstring. But the only person who will decide whether Brooks is going to play against the Falcons on Sunday is Brooks. The Bucs have practiced all week with strongside linebacker Cato June moving over to Brooks' spot at weakside linebacker and Quincy Black starting at June's spot. Adam Hayward has been Brooks' backup the past two seasons.
Analysis: Brooks will be a game-time decision, so keep an eye on his progress before setting your lineup Sunday. The safe bet is to keep Brooks reserved in IDP leagues. But with or without Brooks, consider the Bucs a No. 1 DST option against the Falcons.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 24 points and 438 yards to the Saints on Sunday, but made things a little better for their owners as they returned an interception for a touchdown. They also added a sack.
Analysis: The Saints are an offensive machine and the Buccaneers found that out the hard way in Week 1. In Week 2, Tampa will get a chance to redeem itself against the Falcons, who came out of the gate firing against the Lions in Week 1. Continue to consider them a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in all formats.
News: The St. Pete Times reports that the Buccaneers have re-signed DE Patrick Chukwurah to take the vacant roster spot of DL Marques Douglas, who was traded on Wednesday.
Analysis: Chukwurah was limited by knee and shoulder injuries in Tampa last season, and the fact they're only just now adding him now tells you plenty about his Fantasy value. Ignore him in all IDP formats.
News: Two sacks and one interception was all the Buccaneers DST could total in their loss to Jacksonville in the third week of the preseason. The Bucs have six sacks and two interceptions over three preseason games, but also have a defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Buccaneers should continue to host a strong defense in 2008, though many of its key figures are getting long in the tooth. Play it safe and call them a low-end No. 1 DST worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer. It helps that they play Atlanta twice a season.
News: The Bucs spent their first-round pick on Kansas CB Aqib Talib, a perfect fit for their Cover-2 defensive scheme. Talib is a big physical corner with a knack for tackles, but has some serious off-the-field issues, including three failed marijuana tests while in college.
Analysis: Talib has a shot to be that rare cornerback that fits in as a startable Fantasy DB, but that might take a while to become a reality. He'll probably be a nickelback in Tampa Bay in 2008, making him a longshot to help Fantasy owners. But for those of you willing to risk a pick on a guy with character questions, he'll be a nice pick between the end of Round 2 and Round 3 in IDP league rookie-only drafts this summer.
News: Buccaneers.com reports that the club has signed LBs Leon Joe, Matt McCoy and Teddy Lehman. All three will compete for spots along the LB depth chart.
Analysis: With the Bucs having Cato June, Derrick Brooks and Barrett Ruud, there's little chance any of these three will start. Those Fantasy owners who risked a late draft pick on the Buccaneers DST were not disappointed in 2007. Although the club notched just 33 sacks, they added 25 fumble recoveries, 16 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns -- including the first-ever kickoff-return for a score in franchise history. Moreover, the Bucs won four games where they held their opponents to 7 points or less. They ended the year as a top 10 Fantasy DST. The Buccaneers should continue to host a strong defense in 2008, though many of its key figures are getting long in the tooth. Play it safe and call them a low-end No. 1 DST worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer.
News: The Buccaneers released veteran DEs Kevin Carter and Greg Spires on Wednesday. Carter had 73 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in his first season with the Buccaneers. He has played in every game during his 13-year NFL career with Tampa Bay, Miami, Tennessee and St. Louis. The 34-year-old Carter, who has 100 1/2 career sacks, was a first-round pick out of Florida in 1995 by the Rams. Spires, who joined the Buccaneers in 2002 as a free agent and helped them win their first Super Bowl that season, appeared in just 10 games last season, including eight starts. He had 26 tackles and two sacks. Spires, 33, has 39 1/2 career sacks in 10 seasons with Tampa Bay, Cleveland and New England. He was a third-round pick of the Patriots out of Florida State in 1998.
Analysis: Speculation is that the Bucs cut these players to create even more salary-cap space to sign a stud free agent like CB Asante Samuel. Play it safe and call them a low-end No. 1 DST worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer.

News: The longest tenure for a NFL defensive coordinator will continue next season. Tampa Bay's Monte Kiffin signed a contract extension Friday, ending speculation that he might leave the team after 12 seasons. Statistically, the Bucs have finished in the top 10 in total defense 10 times since Kiffin joined the team in 1996. Tampa Bay allowed the second-fewest yards in the league in 2007 after ranking 17th the previous season. Under Kiffin's guidance, the Bucs have led the NFL in total defense twice, including 2002 when Tampa Bay won its only Super Bowl title.
Analysis: This only helps the Buccaneers DST's value heading into 2008. Players love playing for Kiffin and the defensive scheme in place has been successful even with older veterans manning certain spots. Figure this unit to be a top-15 Fantasy option in league play next year.
News: The Bucs allowed 31 points and 349 yards of total offense in Week 17 vs. Carolina. They forced two turnovers and had one sack in a game in which they rested most of their regulars.
Analysis: The Bucs were resting players looking toward their first round matchup against the Giants in the playoffs. For most of the season, they were one of the top scoring defenses in the NFL and will be a useful unit in postseason Fantasy play as long as they are alive.
News: Coach Jon Gruden isn't second-guessing resting key players for the last two weeks of the regular season in hopes of keeping them healthy for the playoffs. Reserve receiver Maurice Stovall broke his right arm during the first half of Sunday's 21-19 loss at San Francisco. That was more than enough to convince Gruden he's taking the correct approach. Quarterback Jeff Garcia played less than a half, 1,000-yard receiver Joey Galloway left the game after aggravating a shoulder injury on his only catch, and the Bucs played most of the second half without a majority of regulars on defense. That was Gruden's plan all along, and he likely will stick with it through next Sunday's finale against Carolina.
Analysis: Fantasy owners of Garcia, Galloway and Earnest Graham are going to get burned in Week 17 as they'll be out of action for a large chunk of the game. That lends Fantasy status to QB Luke McCown and RB Michael Pittman, both of whom are expected to see some time. Ultimately, relying on any Buc in Week 17 -- including their DST -- is a risky proposition.
News: The Bucs DST had one fumble recovery, one interception and two sacks Sunday at San Francisco. Michael Spurlock had three kickoff returns for a 22.7 yard average and two punt returns for 12 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs DST is a solid option for Week 17 against Carolina. They should be considered a No. 1 DST.
News: The Buccaneers DST went nuts in Tampa Bay's 37-3 win over the Falcons in Week 15. They had the first kick return for a touchdown in Bucs history, an interception return for a touchdown, four total turnovers (two interceptions, two fumble recoveries), a sack, and held the Falcons to only three points and 133 yards.
Analysis: If the Bucs hadn't allowed the three points, it would have been almost a perfect game for this very nice DST unit. Things bode well for another big outing in Week 16 as they head west to take on San Francisco. Start 'em if you've got 'em.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 28 points in a 28-14 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 14, but held Houston to 257 yards, forced two fumble recoveries and claimed three sacks.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST would surely exchange a victory for their nice outing in Week 14, but Fantasy owners will be relatively pleased with their performance. They should be a great start in Week 15 against the sorry Falcons at home.
News: The Buccaneers DST will go to Houston to take on a Texans offense that is ranked ninth in the NFL. The Texans have only given up 18 sacks on the season, unlike their previous years.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is tough on the pass, ranked fourth defensively, and they should be able to improve on that ranking with Sage Rosenfels at quarterback for Houston. Start this DST unit in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Saints managed to muster up 23 points, including six on an interception return, against the Bucs Week 13, but the Tampa Bay defense limited the offense to just 246 yards. New Orleans could only muster up 84 yards on the ground. Tampa Bay had three sacks and no interceptions, but had a crucial fumble recovery in the fourth quarter that set up the winning score.
Analysis: The Bucs did have a tough matchup against the Saints, but did a nice job keeping New Orleans in check. Tampa Bay has a pretty good defensive unit and can be a viable Fantasy DST when the matchup appears favorable. That might be Week 14 against the Texans and backup QB Safe Rosenfels, if Matt Schaub can not play due to an arm injury.
News: The Buccaneers DST travels to New Orleans to face the Saints' eighth-ranked offense in Week 13. The Saints are ranked fourth in the passing game and 28th on the ground.
Analysis: This will be a tough matchup for the Buccaneers DST, which ranks sixth in total defense, including fifth against the run and 17th against the pass. QB Drew Brees will take his shots and Marques Colston should play well, so we recommend this Bucs DST only in larger leagues.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed a ton of yardage to Washington in Tampa Bay's 19-16 win over the Redskins in Week 12, but forced six turnovers and grabbed two sacks in the game.
Analysis: Tampa Bay forced four fumbles in the first half alone on Sunday afternoon as they found a way to jar the ball loose. The Bucs are a useful unit most weeks, but could have some trouble keeping Drew Brees and Reggie Bush in check in Week 13 when they head to New Orleans.
News: The Buccaneers defense unloaded on the road against the Falcons in Week 11, picking up four sacks and four turnovers. It intercepted QB Byron Leftwich twice and forced two fumbles -- one of which DB Ronde Barber returned 41 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. All told, the Buccaneers defense held the Falcons to seven points on 275 yards while their special teams picked up 23 yards.
Analysis: Obviously, a lot of their success Sunday comes from playing against an inept Falcons offense, but the Buccaneers entered the game ranked sixth in total defense (third against the pass and 18th against the run). They have a decent matchup against the Redskins in Week 12 -- one that will probably make them a low-end No. 1 DST in Fantasy.
News: The Buccaneers DST travels to Atlanta to face the Falcons' 30th-ranked offense (23rd through the air and 20th on the ground) on Sunday in Week 11.
Analysis: The Buccaneers are ranked sixth in total defense (third against the pass and 18th against the run). They have just 16 sacks on the season, but they have allowed only six touchdowns through the air (which ranks them second in the NFL). We expect them to clamp down on the Falcons, including former Buccaneer RB Warrick Dunn, so start them in all 12-team Fantasy leagues.
News: The Buccaneers, Jets, Patriots and Texans are on a bye week in Week 10.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is ranked sixth in total defense this season (second against the pass and 17th against the run). They are a solid DST worthy of reserving until Week 11, when they travel to face the offensively-challenged Falcons in Atlanta.
News: The Buccaneers DST Stingy defense was the team's hallmark for most of the past decade, and it was the key Sunday as the Buccaneers surpassed their victory total for last season with a 17-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals. In addition to FS Tanard Jackson's second-quarter interception, which set up a field goal, the Bucs defense limited the Cardinals to one first down and 78 yards total offense in the opening half. This unit allowed just 195 total yards (23 rushing, 172 passing) in a 17-10 win against Arizona on Sunday. They held the Cardinals to just 16:53 in time of possession.
Analysis: Arizona, averaging 337.3 yards per game, finished with a season-low 195 yards. The Bucs had two interceptions and no sacks, but they held the Cardinals' rushing game to just 1.9 yards per rush. They are on a bye in Week 10 and should be reserved accordingly.
News: The Cardinals DST ranks 10th in total defense this season, including eighth against the pass and 15th against the run. They have 17 sacks and six interceptions. They'll face Tampa Bay in Raymond James Stadium in Week 9.
Analysis: The Bucs are ranked 17th in total offense, including 15th through the air and 17th on the ground. Their offensive line is improving, but so is the Cardinals DST. Consider the Cards in larger leagues for this matchup.
News: Tampa Bay will host QB Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9 Sunday. The Cardinals are ranked 11th in total offense, but they are the most-penalized team in the league.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is ranked eighth in total defense (second against the pass and 22nd against the run). They have 16 sacks, but their defensive line is a little banged up. The still remain a solid Fantasy DST that should be trusted in this matchup in 12-team leagues.
News: The Bucs defense managed to hold the Jaguars, playing without starting QB David Garrard (ankle) and a less than 100 percent Maurice Jones-Drew (knee), to 219 total yards Week 8. However, the Jaguars still put 24 points on the board and walked away with the win. The Bucs did not force any turnovers and came away with just one sack.
Analysis: The Bucs came into the game with one of the best defenses in the NFL and did a nice job against Jacksonville. However, costly turnovers on offense and the inability to pressure QB Quinn Gray cost Tampa the win. The Bucs will look for a better effort against the Cardinals in Week 9, but the Bucs DST is nothing more than a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host their cross-state rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 8 on Sunday. The Jaguars have the 14th-best offense (26th in the passing game and third in rushing), but they'll likely play without David Garrard (ankle), and RB Maurice Jones-Drew hasn't been practicing because of a knee injury.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST ranks 12th in the NFL, including a fifth-ranked pass defense and a 21st-ranked rush defense. This is a nice week to start this DST, since the Jaguars will have inexperienced players on offense.
News: The Buccaneers DST had no turnovers and three sacks Sunday against Detroit. KR Mark Jones had two returns for 44 yards before leaving the game with a knee injury. Torrie Cox had one kickoff return for 27 yards. Phillip Buchanon had one punt return for 6 yards, and Ike Hilliard had one punt return for 2 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs DST will look to rebound in Week 8 against Jacksonville. Consider them a No. 2 option against the Jaguars.
News: KR Mark Jones was carted off the field with a left knee injury in the first quarter at Detroit Sunday. His return is doubtful with a sprained knee.
Analysis: Jones sees little time on offense, so this injury shouldn't affect any Fantasy rosters. And since the Bucs have never scored a touchdown on a kickoff return, it's doubtful his absence will hurt their DST much either. Ike Hilliard took over return duties.
News: The Buccaneers DST travels to play Detroit at Ford Field in Week 7. The Lions have the fifth-best passing attack in the league, but they rank 31st on the ground, and 14th in total offense. They have allowed a league-high 28 sacks and Jon Kitna has thrown eight interceptions.
Analysis: There should be plenty of sack opportunities for the Buccaneers DST this week. The Bucs rank 12th in total defense, eighth against the pass and 21st against the run. They have 11 sacks, but that number will climb this week. Start them in larger Fantasy leagues in Week 7.
News: The Buccaneers had a renaissance afternoon Week 6 against the Titans, allowing only 10 points and 317 yards. They also recorded three sacks, an interception and recovered a couple of fumbles. Their special teams gained 45 yards.
Analysis: The Bucs defense isn't the unit of old. It has some good weeks but has been roughed up a few times in 2007. Because the Buccaneers visit the Lions in Week 7 -- a team known for allowing sacks -- consider using it. Realize, however, that the Lions typically put up a lot of points as well.
News: The Bucs DST will face the 24th-ranked Tennessee offense on Sunday. QB Vince Young and his receivers have a 30th-ranked passing game, but their running game has been surprising with 153.2 yards per game, ranking them fourth in that category.
Analysis: The Bucs are much better against the pass (ninth) than they are against the run (22nd). If you are in a league with more than 12 teams, consider the Bucs this weekend, but otherwise, they might get chewed up on the ground.
News: The Bucs got a taste of what the Broncos endured the previous week, as the Tampa Bay defense was brutalized by the Colts during a Week 5 loss. The Bucs allowed 33 points and a total of 400 yards (253 passing). Peyton Manning threw two touchdowns and backup RB Kenton Keith, filling in for the injured Joseph Addai, rushed for two touchdowns. The Bucs did intercept a pass, but failed to sack Manning.
Analysis: The Bucs defense isn't the unit of old. They have some good weeks, but have been roughed up a few times in 2007. They are nothing more than a possible bye-week Fantasy replacement at this time. The Bucs play the Titans in Week 6. The Titans produce sporadic offensive performances, so it might be worth starting the Bucs DST for once.
News: The Buccaneers DST has been pretty good this season, ranking fifth overall (sixth against the pass and 20th against the run). But they face the Colts' third-ranked offense led by future Hall-of-Fame QB Peyton Manning.
Analysis: The Bucs DST is normally a solid unit, but this week is when you want to bench them.
News: The Buccaneers held the Panthers scoreless until the final minute of the game in Week 4 at Carolina. They gave up seven points and 236 total yards. Phillip Buchanon held WR Steve Smith to five catches and 32 yards and DB Jermaine Phillips had the team's only interception, DL Jovan Haye, DL Greg Peterson and LB Patrick Chukwurah each had a sack. DL Greg Peterson recovered a fumble as well.
Analysis: Before you get too excited, let's not forget the Panthers were starting backup QB David Carr due to injury. Let us also remember that the Bucs will face the high-powered Colts in Week 5, coached by a team that built the Tampa defense inside and out.
News: The Buccaneers DST travels to play Carolina in Week 4. In two games last season, the Panthers scored a total of 50 points against this unit.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST have so far been a much-improved unit compared to a season ago. They rank 11th in total defense, ninth in passing defense and 21st against the run, which is how the Panthers plan on attacking them. Only consider Tampa Bay's defense if your regular starting unit is on a bye.
News: The biggest news of Week 3 could be that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense held the Rams to three points. That's just one of the bright stats this unit has, adding one sack, three interceptions and a forced fumble. "Obviously giving up three points is a tremendous feat in pro football, but we're expecting a lot more from them," Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said. "Nothing's good enough yet on defense, and we're going to hold the standards where they belong here. Until we get some quick three-and-outs and we start scoring on defense, we're going to be asking for a lot more."
Analysis: The Buccaneers face a tough challenge in Week 4 when they play at Carolina. The Panthers have been moving the ball well and should give the Bucs headaches. Don't expect to see them as a No. 2 DST in Week 4.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't have any illusions about what the St. Louis Rams will try to do to jump-start their season. Marc Bulger still directs a potent passing attack featuring big-play receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. However, the Bucs feel that the player who really makes the Rams go on offense is running back Steven Jackson. "He's a beast," Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said. "In my opinion, one of the great backs -- not good backs, but great backs -- in the league," 10-time Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks agreed. "He does a lot for them." Not the past two weeks. Jackson has averaged 3 yards per carry during St. Louis' 0-2 start, and the Rams also have struggled to get the fourth-year pro involved in the passing game. He has four receptions for 39 yards after leading all NFL running backs with 90, while also rushing for 1,528 yards and 13 touchdowns, in 2006.
Analysis: The Bucs (1-1) expect the Rams to try to get him Jackson on track when the teams meet Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. "He's a great receiver -- no one talks about that enough. He can take a 2-yard check-down 70 yards. I've seen him do it. He's a tremendous football player. He's a power runner, he's an elusive back, he's a complete package," Gruden said. Holt, who has averaged nine receptions and 142 yards per game in four regular-season meetings with the Bucs, said the Rams also are trying to establish a new identity on offense under second-year coach Scott Linehan. The Bucs defense had posted two so-so outings in 2007 and don't appear to be the dominating defense of old. The Bucs DST should only be used as this stage when the matchups appears favorable. The Bucs don't have a very easy matchup in Week 3.
News: The Saints managed 343 yards of offense against the Bucs in Week 2, but only put 14 points on the scoreboard. The Bucs allowed 99 yards rushing and 244 yards passing. They sacked QB Drew Brees twice and intercepted one pass.
Analysis: The Bucs defense had posted two so-so outings in 2007 and don't appear to be the dominating defense of old. The Bucs DST should only be used as this stage when the matchups appears favorable. They host the Rams in Week 3. Not a very easy matchup for the Bucs.
News: In two games against the Saints last year, the Bucs allowed 55 total points in two losses. Last week against Seattle, the Bucs allowed 20 points and 343 total yards. With New Orleans looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss against Indianapolis, this could be a bad game for Tampa Bay's defense.
Analysis: The Saints are no slouches offensively, especially since they're armed with Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush and Drew Brees. The Bucs DST is nothing like it used to be and should be benched this week in the 18 percent of leagues they're owned in.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers DST allowed 20 points and 343 total net yards in Sunday's Week 1 loss at Seattle. They were also able to rack up two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Buccaneers will look to make it two miserable weeks in a row for QB Drew Brees and the Saints, when the NFC South rivals clash in Tampa in Week 2.
News: The challenge defensively for the Bucs in 2007 is to replace two more starters from the Super Bowl team in end Simeon Rice and linebacker Shelton Quarles, and regain some of the swagger the unit lost last season. The Bucs allowed the fewest yards in the NFL two years ago, but slipped to 17th in total defense in 2006. Head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen used seven of 10 picks in this year's draft on defensive players, in addition to signing free agents Cato June and Kevin Carter. First-rounder Gaines Adams will be expected to give the pass rush a lift. "The chemistry is different, but no matter who's in there, the results have to be the same," Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks said. "We've got to get more turnovers. We've got to allow less points. We've got to play more physical, and we've got to tackle better."
Analysis: Brooks is not making any bold predictions, however he's adamant the Bucs are capable of a turnaround. He senses a renewed commitment from players who were humbled by last season. "You are a different football team every year you step on the field. You have to redefine yourself and get better. That's the lesson I learned from 2003," he said, referring to the losing season Tampa Bay had a year after winning the Super Bowl. Continue to view the Bucs as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed linebacker Leon Joe off waivers from the Chicago Bears and placed a pair of reserves - guard Jeb Terry and tight end Matt Herian - on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Joe was a fourth-round draft pick in 2004 and appeared in 28 games for the Bears and Arizona Cardinals over the past three seasons. His addition doesn't make much of a difference to the Fantasy value of the Bucs DST. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: The Buccaneers defense didn't do much at Jacksonville in Tampa Bay's second preseason game. However, first-round pick DE Gaines Adams did notch his first sack, getting to David Garrard, and his first forced fumble, stripping RB/FB Greg Jones. Adams played with the second unit. The Bucs ended the game with two sacks and two forced fumbles.
Analysis: Adams should be a fixture along the Bucs' defensive line for the next eight-to-10 years. He has amazing size and speed (he runs a 4.72 at 265 pounds) and should fit in seamlessly with the Bucs' Tampa-2 defense. Adams will add sacks to the Bucs' bottom line, making their DST a little more appealing as a bye-week replacement unit. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that Bucs DE Gaines Adams was back at practice on Friday. He had been out with an arm strain.
Analysis: Adams should be a fixture along the Bucs' defensive line for the next eight-to-10 years. Adams will add sacks to the Bucs' bottom line, making their DST a little more appealing as a bye-week replacement unit. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: Bucs coach Jon Gruden said Wednesday that rookie DE Gaines Adams has a mild strain in his triceps. Gruden said that Adams is day-to-day. "We've got a lot of guys, several guys that have bumps and bruises," Gruden said. "But he's day-to-day, nothing significant. He's got a triceps strain. He'll be back hopefully today or so."
News: Cato June offered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers everything they were looking for to bolster a declining defense, and the free agent linebacker welcomed an opportunity to flourish for a new team. Even if it meant changing positions and leaving the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts for the retooling Bucs, who have missed the playoffs three of the past four seasons. "I think it's a good fit," said June, who spent the first four seasons of his pro career playing weakside linebacker in a defensive scheme similar to the Tampa 2 system the Bucs popularized over the past decade.
Analysis: June is one of four projected new starters, along with middle linebacker Barrett Ruud, defensive end Gaines Adams and either Jovan Haye or Kevin Carter at tackle. "He's had a knack for making plays. Whatever position you play him at, weakside or strongside, he's going to be a guy that shows up where the ballcarrier is," coach Jon Gruden said. June's addition, as well as the drafting of Adams, makes this a decent late-round selection in deeper Fantasy leagues or when you need a bye-week replacement.
News: Buccaneers.com reports that the club and first-round pick Gaines Adams have agreed to a six-year deal. Adams is expected to start on the D-line opposite Greg Spires. Second-round pick DB Sabby Piscitelli has also signed.
News: Special teams ace Torrie Cox of the Buccaneers was suspended Tuesday by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Cox's suspension begins Aug. 31. The defensive back and Pro Bowl special-teams alternate can participate in all preseason practices and games. Cox is eligible to return to Tampa Bay's active roster on Oct. 1 after the team's fourth game against the Carolina Panthers. The Buccaneers had re-signed Cox in March. "We are hopeful that Torrie Cox can overcome this personal setback," Bucs GM Bruce Allen said in a statement.
Analysis: Cox was picked as a Pro Bowl alternate last season when he returned 18 kickoffs for 387 yards and made 30 tackles. He'll be missed on the Bucs' special teams, but his absence won't knock the Bucs DST one iota. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts as a bye-week replacement option.
News: The Buccaneers released CB Juran Bolden and three other players on Monday. Bolden, who has played with six teams during a nine-year NFL career, signed with the Bucs as a free agent in March 2005. He appeared in 32 games over the past two seasons, including 13 starts, and had three interceptions and one sack. Also released were safety Tra Boger, long snapper Adam Johnson and defensive tackle Kenny Smith. The club withdrew a tender offer to restricted free agent Blue Adams, meaning the fourth-year safety is now an unrestricted free agent. The Bucs did acquire DT Ryan Sims in a trade from Kansas City for a draft pick.
Analysis: None of those releases is enough to change the status of the Buccaneers DST, which took a jump with the addition of rookie DE Gaines Adams and signing of LB Cato June. Adams will add sacks to the Bucs' bottom line, making their DST a little more appealing as a bye-week replacement unit. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: With the fourth pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers took Clemson DE Gaines Adams. Adams should be a fixture along the Bucs' defensive line for the next eight-to-10 years. He has amazing size and speed (he runs a 4.72 at 265 pounds) and should fit in seamlessly with the Bucs' Tampa-2 defense.
Analysis: Adams will add sacks to the Bucs' bottom line, making their DST a little more appealing as a bye-week replacement unit. Continue to view them as a late-round pick in deeper drafts.
News: According to several published reports, Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen announced Tuesday that LB Shelton Quarles will not be back with the team in 2007. Quarles failed a team physical after suffering several injuries last season. "Shelton has been a great contributor for the Bucs," Allen said. "It's been 10 years of solid football. He's provided a spark for the team. He's a football player. If we were sitting here in 2017, he'd still want to be playing football." Barrett Ruud has been penciled in as his replacement.
Analysis: The Bucs added Cato June to their LB corps this offseason, and he'll team with Derrick Brooks and Ruud to help stop offenses. Is it enough? Between this LB corps, the Bucs' less-than-stellar defensive line and their competent secondary, the unit is at best a No. 2 option in Fantasy play this season.
News: Free-agent linebacker Cato June signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The fifth-year pro spent his first four seasons with Indianapolis. He started 45 of 56 games he appeared in with the Colts and has 10 career interceptions. He made a team-high 162 tackles in 2006. A sixth-round draft pick in 2003, June had five interceptions in 2005 and was picked to play in the Pro Bowl for the first time. He started all 20 games for the Super Bowl champions last season.
Analysis: June, previously a middle linebacker, will fit in somewhere along the starting linebacker corps, possibly as a strong-side option and the heir-apparent to the weak-side job when Derrick Brooks retires. June is already well-versed in the Tampa-2 scheme he learned in Indianapolis with Tony Dungy and should be a perfect fit for them. See how the Bucs fit him in to their defense, but consider them a No. 2 Fantasy DST in 2007.
News: The Tampa Tribune is among several reporting that the Buccaneers will entertain Saints DE Charles Grant on a free-agent visit. The news is startling since Grant is a restricted free agent and would presumably cost the Bucs two first-round picks, including the fourth-overall choice in 2007, if he signed an offer sheet with the team that wasn't matched by the Saints. This may also be a ploy by the Bucs to bring in Grant to get information about the Saints from him, or just to annoy the Saints' organization (both teams play in the NFC South). Presumably, the Bucs could offer to cut a trade with New Orleans, thusly not giving up their fourth overall choice.
Analysis: Grant is a solid defensive end that is capable of 10-plus sacks as well as stopping the run. If he signed with the Bucs, they'd have to be considered at least a solid No. 2 Fantasy DST. For now, they're a low-end No. 2 or even a No. 3 choice.
News: Free-agent defensive end Kevin Carter signed with the Buccaneers. Carter is fourth among active players with 97.5 career sacks and has not missed a game in 12 seasons with the Titans, Rams and Dolphins, who released him last week after he was unable to reach an agreement on a restructured contract. The 34-year-old has played in 192 consecutive games since entering the league with the Rams as the sixth overall pick in the 1995 draft. He spent the last two seasons with the Dolphins and had 5.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles in 2006.
Analysis: Carter will help generate some pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Four or five years ago, Carter and Simeon Rice would have been considered the best 1-2 punch along a defensive line, but they are both past their prime and are marginal players. The Buccaneers defense is still not a recommended starting option in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: The Buccaneers have announced that they have signed CB Phillip Buchanon. Terms were not disclosed. Last season, Buchanon played in 14 games with four starts, including 10 games and four starts with the Buccaneers after beginning the season with the Houston Texans. He totaled 30 tackles, two interceptions, eight passes defensed, one fumble recovery, along with returning 14 punts for 95 yards and five kickoffs for 106 yards as a member of the Buccaneers and Texans.
Analysis: Buchanon will help provide depth at the cornerback position and help on special teams, but it's not enough to push the Bucs DST past being a reserve Fantasy unit. ... The team is also awaiting tests on LB Shelton Quarles, who may be forced to retire thanks to a hip condition. Losing him would hurt the defensive unit for sure.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that the agent for LB Shelton Quarles says his client could miss the 2007 season with some medical issues. The paper reported nothing else except that his status will be known in a month.
Analysis: Quarles, 35, has been a staple in the Bucs defense for years and will be a little tough to replace. Monitor his status, but expect the Buccaneers DST to be a No. 2 unit in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: Once a must-own DST unit, the Buccaneers slipped in 2006. They totaled three defensive touchdowns, 25.5 sacks and 11 interceptions with 20 fumble recoveries. In standard-scoring Fantasy play, they ranked 30th among 32 teams. The Bucs did not score any touchdowns on special teams.
Analysis: Tampa Bay has several veteran components to their defense that may result in future deterioration. Owners are advised to not use this DST as anything more than a bye-week replacement in 2007 unless they make more changes to make their defense strong again.
News: The Buccaneers DST had one sack and one fumble recovery in the season finale against Seattle. DL Greg Spires had five tackles and a sack. DB Phillip Buchanon had five tackles and recovered a fumble. LB Derrick Brooks had 11 tackles. DB Ronde Barber had three tackles. DB Jermaine Phillips had eight tackles. LB Shelton Quarles had eight tackles.
Analysis: Look for the Bucs DST to bounce back to a useful Fantasy option in 2007.
News: The Tampa Bay defense did not allow any offensive points (the Browns scored on a defensive play) and tallied one touchdown, four interceptions and three sacks at Cleveland in Week 16.
Analysis: The Bucs defense will have its hands full with the Seahawks at home in Week 17. Don't rely on them for the game if you can help it.
News: The Chicago Bears scored 34 points and racked up 446 yards on the Bucs defense in Week 15. The Bucs only forced one turnover on a fumble, but did get four sacks (Jermaine Phillips, Greg Spires, Dewayne White and Ellis Wyms). Shelton Quarles led all tacklers with 15.
Analysis: The dominating Bucs defense of the past is no more in 2006. They could be used as a one-week DST sleeper in Week 16 against the Browns, but it is too much of a risk at this stage in the season. Only Quarles is a reliable Fantasy option in IDP leagues.
News: The Bucs defense were able to hold Michael Vick in check Week 14 by not letting him score or rush for more than five yards. But the rest of the Falcons pitched in to score 17 points and rack up 280 yards. Bucs DB Phillip Buchanon had an interception and sacks went to LB Shelton Quarles (1 1/2) and LB Ryan Nece (1/2).
Analysis: The Bucs defense continues to be a huge disappointment this season. However, the Bucs DST could be used as a one-week sleeper in Week 15 against a struggling Bears offense. Quarles is the only Bucs defender that should be used in IDP leagues.
News: FS Will Allen (ankle), CB Juran Bolden (ankle, foot), LB Shelton Quarles (ankle, knee) and DT Ellis Wyms (ankle) are all questionable for Week 14 against the Falcons.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is not a good play for Week 14 against their NFC South Division rivals even when everyone is totally healthy.
News: The Tampa Bay DST allowed 20 points and 267 total net yards Week 13 at Pittsburgh. The defense was also good for a sack and interception.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 14 against Atlanta.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced DE Charles Bennett, DT Jon Bradley, QB Luke McCown, C Nick Mihlhauser, S Donte Nicholson, T Donald Penn, WR Paris Warren and CB Alan Zemaitis are inactive for Week 13 at Pittsburgh.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned are worthy of Fantasy consideration.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports DB Juran Bolden (ankle, foot, hip), DL Shelton Quarles (ankle, knee) and DL Ellis Wyms (ankle) will be questionable for Week 13 at Pittsburgh.
Analysis: The Buccaneers are a banged up unit and were undressed on Thanksgiving at Dallas in Week 12. Despite the fact WR Hines Ward (knee) is OUT for the game, the Buccaneers are still not a recommended Fantasy defense for this road contest.
News: The Buccaneers defense had one sack (DE Chris Hovan) and that's it at Dallas on Thanksgiving in Week 12. The Cowboys hung 38 points on the Bucs, with QB Tony Romo throwing five TD passes.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense is missing several key players and using many younger talents at this time. It's best to consider them a desperation defensive unit at best for Fantasy purposes. Don't use them at Pittsburgh in Week 13.
News: The Buccaneers placed DE Simeon Rice on Injured Reserve with a shoulder injury. His season ends with 21 tackles, two sacks, four forced fumbles (team-high) and one pass defensed.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense continues to get weaker, especially along the defensive line. Do not use them at Dallas in Week 12.
News: The Buccaneers defense totaled two sacks and one forced fumble vs. Washington in Week 11. They did hold the Skins to 17 points and 64 total rush yards.
Analysis: The Bucs D turned in a nice game, but don't use them at Dallas on Thanksgiving in Week 12.
News: Bucs coach Jon Gruden said Friday that DEs Ellis Wyms and Simeon Rice didn't practice again and that they will be gametime decisions for Week 11 vs. the Redskins.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense is at best a low-end option in the deepest of leagues. Keep them off Fantasy rosters if at all possible.
News: The Tampa Bay defense allowed 24 points and 318 total net yards in Week 10 at Carolina. They did not record any sacks, posted an interception and had a fumble recovery in the loss.
Analysis: The Buccaneers did pretty well considering the fact they were playing without three defensive starters (Shelton Quarles, Simeon Rice and Ellis Wyms). They'll look for better results in Week 11 against Washington.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers has announced WR Mark Jones, QB Luke McCown, OT Donald Penn, LB Shelton Quarles (knee), DL Simeon Rice (shoulder), OG Jeb Terry, DL Ellis Wyms (ankle) and CB Alan Zemaitis are inactive for Week 10 at Carolina.
Analysis: Quarles, Rice and Wyms are not half-bad options in IDP Fantasy leagues when healthy, but avoid them in all formats until they can officially return and prove their health.
News: Defensive end Simeon Rice, linebacker Shelton Quarles and tackle Ellis Wyms will all miss Tampa Bay's game against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night because of injuries. Rice (shoulder), Quarles (knee) and Wyms (ankle) had been listed as questionable on the injury report and didn't make the trip to Charlotte on Sunday. Dewayne White will replace Rice, while second-year pro Barrett Ruud will make his third career start at middle linebacker in place of Quarles. Jon Bradley or Jovan Haye likely will fill in for Wyms, who became a starter when the Buccaneers traded Anthony McFarland to Indianapolis last month.
Analysis: It is unfortunate that the news came out after Fantasy lineups were set on Sunday, but if you can, make the appropriate changes to your Fantasy lineup.
News: Bucs coach Jon Gruden said Monday that LB Shelton Quarles has a high ankle sprain and will be questionable for Week 10 at Carolina. "We're concerned about him," Gruden said.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense is nowhere near as strong as it used to be. Consider them a low-end option for use in Fantasy play. They have a horrible matchup at Carolina in Week 10.
News: The New Orleans Saints put up 31 points and 363 points against the Bucs defense in Week 9. It was a bad day for the Bucs defense, whom did not sack the quarterback once or force a turnover. A lone bright spot was the play of LB Derrick Brooks, who had 13 total tackles.
Analysis: It wasn't a good day to be a Buccaneer defender. The once dominate Bucs defense is no more. Now, it remains a mystery as to what team will show up on Sundays. Hence a reason as to why they are only owned in 47 percent of Fantasy leagues. The Bucs play the Panthers in Week 10 and it is not recommended you use the Bucs DST for Fantasy purposes. Brooks on the other hand is a great Fantasy LB in IDP leagues.
News: The Bucs defense is missing a key element: turnovers. Tampa Bay is a minus-2 in turnover ratio this season. Bucs coach Jon Gruden said they have to take advantage of their opportunities. "The ball was on the ground a couple of times and unfortunately we weren't able to get on it," Gruden said of last week's loss to the Giants. "Turnovers often times set the stage for field position and scoring opportunities. That's an area that you've got to win in pro football. It's the number-one statistic that we go by here, turnover ratio, and right now we're in the bottom side of that ledger."
Analysis: The once dominate Bucs defense is no more. Now, it remains a mystery as to what team will show up on Sundays. Hence a reason as to why they are only owned in 47 percent of Fantasy leagues. The Bucs play the Saints on Sunday, a team they lost to in Week 5. Outside of giving up 24 points, the Bucs defense did an admirable job of keeping the yardage down. Consider using the Bucs defense for Fantasy purposes in Week 10.
News: The Bucs allowed just 251 yards of total offense to a very potent Giants lineup in Week 8 on the road. They gave up 17 points and picked up two sacks in the game (Simeon Rice and Ellis Wyms).
Analysis: The Bucs defense wasn't the reason the team lost to the Giants. They were impressive in holding one of the highest-ranked offenses in the league to only 17 points. Consider them a good start in any format for Week 9 vs. New Orleans.
News: Tampa Bay Buccaneers DB Brian Kelly will miss the remainder of the season with a toe injury that already had sidelined him for most of the year. "It's a big, big loss for us," coach Jon Gruden said Wednesday after the ninth-year pro was placed on injured reserve. Kelly was second on the team with four interceptions in 2005. He started the season opener against Baltimore last month, but was inactive four of the next five games. In two starts, he had 15 tackles.
Analysis: It just keeps on getting worse for the Bucs, yet, they have managed to win the past two weeks. The loss of Kelly is huge and should be taken into account when using the Bucs DST. Tampa Bay travels to New York to play the Giants -- one of the league's most explosive offenses -- in Week 8.
News: The Bucs defense was helped by two interception-returns for a TD by Ronde Barber vs. Philadelphia in Week 7. The Bucs totaled a sack, three INTs (one by Juran Bolden) and a forced fumble (guess who -- Barber).
Analysis: Ronde will get to hang out with his brother, Tiki Barber, when the Bucs play at the N.Y. Giants in Week 8. It is not a good matchup for the Tampa Bay defense.
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded underachieving defensive tackle Anthony McFarland to the Indianapolis Colts for a second-round draft pick in 2007. The move clears the way for backup Ellis Wyms to take over at tackle. The sixth-year pro had two sacks in last week's 14-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. "We feel good about where Ellis Wyms is as a young man who is really coming into his own," said general manager Bruce Allen said. "We feel we're strong there. This does give us some more ammunition for the future. It gives us the potential to get another excellent football player."
Analysis: The loss of McFarland does not decrease the value of the Buccaneers DST from a Fantasy perspective. On a side note, the team also announced the signing of veteran CB Phillip Buchanon, who was released by the Houston Texans on Monday.
News: The Tampa Bay defense totaled two sacks (both by Ellis Wyms) and that's it against the Bengals in Week 6. However, they held Cincy to 13 points and 314 total yards.
Analysis: Tampa Bay's defense played strong, inspired football against the high-powered Bengals. However, with another good team coming to town next week (Philadelphia), don't be so quick to start them in Week 7.
News: The Tampa Bay defense is ranked 30th among 32 teams in rushing defense (163.3 yards per game) and 20th overall (329.3). They have one interception, and three of the four fumbles they've recovered came in the Week 3 loss to Carolina. "We are struggling," coach Jon Gruden said. "If I could put my finger on it, I'd probably tell you what it was. It's just not up to the standards that we've seen around here in the past, nor the ones that we expect here in the future."
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST is not worth using in any Fantasy league right now, as they are too inconsistent and are not creating many turnovers. The Bucs will face QB Carson Palmer and the high-flying Cincinnati offense coming off a bye. It might get a lot uglier before it gets better in Tampa.
News: The Tampa Bay DST allowed 24 points, 171 yards passing and 143 yards rushing at New Orleans Sunday. They did not record a sack or force a turnover.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST remains pretty bad against the rush. They'll face a top-notch offense in Week 6 against Cincinnati in Tampa Bay. Look for a better matchup for your Fantasy league.
News: The Bucs defense totaled three sacks, three fumbles forced and recoveries but allowed 26 points and 272 passing yards to the Panthers in Week 3 play.
Analysis: The Buccaneers defense is definitely sagging. They are on bye in Week 4 but play at New Orleans in Week 5, which is a decent matchup for them but not necessarily a great one. Find a good defense to use for Week 4, and possibly beyond since it doesn't look like the Bucs will be a shut-down unit this season.

Bucs defense smacked by Falcons
News: The Falcons rushed for 306 yards against the Bucs in Week 2, beating them 14-3. Although the Bucs yielded just 14 points, they only had one interception and three sacks in the game.
Analysis: Something's up with the Bucs' defense -- they don't just allow 300-plus rushing yards like this. Owners should be skeptical about starting them and may want to pick up an alternate for Week 3 since they'll be facing a Panthers team that may have Steve Smith back.

LB Ruud starts over Quarles
News: LB Barrett Ruud made his first NFL start against the Ravens and recorded eight tackles. He was playing for injured LB Shelton Quarles. "I didn't make mistakes, but I didn't make big plays," Ruud said. "They had guys on their team that made big plays."
Analysis: The Bucs defense had a bad week and their playmakers were held in check all day. Expect a better performance on the road at Atlanta, despite the fact that the Falcons are coming off a huge win at Carolina.

Average day for Bucs DST
News: Tampa Bay's DST allowed only 168 passing yards and 103 rushing yards against Baltimore Sunday. But the Ravens did score 27 points.
Analysis: The Bucs DST got one sack and no turnovers, but this is still a solid starting unit in Fantasy play for Week 2 at Atlanta.

Quarles among inactives for Bucs
News: LB Shelton Quarles among inactives for Bucs today against Ravens. Also out are WR Paris Warren, WR Maurice Stovall, DT Julian Jenkins and QB Tim Rattay is the emergency quarterback.

Bucs defense prepares for Ravens
News: The vaunted Buccaneers DST will receive an early test in Week 1 when the Ravens come to Tampa Bay. The Ravens will have QB Steve McNair under center for the first time in the regular season and have RB Jamal Lewis (hip) return to the backfield. Tampa's defense remains mostly in tact -- the only change is Will Allen replacing Dexter Jackson at strong safety.
Analysis: The Buccaneers DST should be used just about every week regardless of their opponent. Definitely start them Week 1 against the Ravens.

Tampa Bay's D looks A-OK
News: Through two preseason games, the Bucs DST looks pretty strong. They rank fourth in total defense through the preseason, allowing 222.5 yards per game with five sacks and 8.0 points allowed per game.
Analysis: This could be a nice sign of things to come. Don't expect much out of the special teams in Tampa, but the defense should be rock solid for use as a No. 1 DST in all leagues. Tampa Bay is worth a good late-round pick.

Bucs sign defensive back
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed cornerback Dwight Ellick and released cornerback Reuben Houston on Saturday. Ellick originally signed with the Bucs on Jan. 20 and was released July 28, the day after the team reported to training camp. Houston had signed as an undrafted free agent on May 8.
Analysis: Ellick does not figure to make any impact in IDP leagues this season and he should go undrafted in Fantasy leagues. He'll have little impact on the success of the Buccaneers DST, who figure to be one of the best DST units in Fantasy Football.

Bucs sign CB Barber to extension
News: Buccaneers CB Ronde Barber agreed to a five-year contract extension with the team, keeping him in the fold possibly for the rest of his career. Barber is a staple of the defense and will start at one of the cornerback spots in '06. "I love that guy," head coach Jon Gruden said before the signing. "He's a big part of this organization. ... We like great players, and certainly his caliber, his status is very important to us."
Analysis: Barber is one of the many key pieces that makes Tampa Bay one of the best DST units in Fantasy Football. Between their strong linebackers and fierce DBs, Tampa is considered a top-12 DST. Draft them late in seasonal leagues this summer.

Derrick Brooks takes serious cut

Buccaneers DST solid again
News: The Buccaneers DST recorded 17 interceptions, one safety, 36 sacks, 13 fumble recoveries, three TDs and allowed 274 points (17.1 PPG) this season.

Bucs DST hosts Washington
News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Washington Redskins in Wild Card weekend. The Bucs DST allowed 35 points and 389 total yards earlier this season against the 'Skins.
Analysis: This contest won't be a barnburner like the 36-35 scorcher between these two teams back on Nov. 13, so the Buccaneers DST is a nice choice in postseason leagues.

Bucs D gives up 13 points
News: The Buccaneers allowed 306 yards of offense and 13 points in Week 17 vs. New Orleans. They also forced three turnovers and picked up four sacks.

News: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave up 27 points and 443 yards in Week 11 at Atlanta. They forced a fumble by QB Matt Schaub and recovered it in the endzone for a score.

Analysis: The Buccaneers will look to put the clamps on Michael Vick and the Falcons in the Georgia Dome in Week 11.
News: The Buccaneers DST allowed 34 points and recorded one sack and one forced fumble in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
Analysis: Despite this poor performance, the Buccaneers DST is still a recommended option for Week 10 against the Washington Redskins.

DB D. Jackson, LB Brooks probable
News: The St. Petersburg Times reports that Brooks (hamstring) missed practice Thursday but he is still listed as probable against Carolina on Sunday. S Dexter Jackson (hamstring) is out for Week 9.
Analysis: Brooks' numbers have been down this season, but he's still worth starting as a No. 2 or 3 LB when healthy. Jackson should only be owner in larger IDP leagues when healthy. The Bucs defense remains a solid unit this week at home.

LB Brooks, DE Rice to play
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that DE Rice will be reinserted into the Bucs lineup against Carolina in Week 9. Three days after he was scratched from Sunday's game for missing a team meeting, he acknowledged his absence hurt his team. "I felt like, with my presence on the field, we would have had a chance to win the game -- a bigger chance than we did, anyway," Rice said. "But life is what it is, and we move on. It doesn't matter now; what matters now is Carolina. LB Derrick Brooks (hamstring) didn't practice Wednesday, but he said he didn't care how he was listed on the injury report, he expects to play. "I'm playing," he said. DB Dexter Jackson (hamstring) is listed as doubtful and he was unable to practice also. The Bucs also signed LB Wesley Mallard to their practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: The Panthers have allowed only 10 sacks all season, fewer than all but two offenses. DE Rice will try to make up for his mental mistake, but he'll have a tough matchup. Brooks has had a tough Fantasy season in IDP leagues and the injury won't help his stats. Jackson isn't worth starting, but the Bucs defense as a whole is still an upper echelon Fantasy unit.

LB Brooks walking without pain
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that Derrick Brooks strained a hamstring late in Sunday's game, but he appeared to be walking without pain later Sunday.
Analysis: Brooks has only 30 tackles this season, which makes him a decent No. 3 LB in IDP leagues. Obviously, he's much better than that, but he has been unable to make the big plays (sacks, INTs) that he used to. And the Bucs are still one of the top Fantasy defenses in the game.

Simeon Rice misses meeting, game
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Rice missed a team meeting Saturday night, but Bucs general manager Bruce Allen didn't confirm whether that was the reason he was inactive for Sunday's game at the 49ers.
Analysis: Interestingly, Allen didn't comment on Rice's future with the Buccaneers also. For a defense that couldn't keep a putrid 49ers offense from scoring, the possible loss of Rice could be huge. Des Dewayne White and Ellis Wyms received snaps in Rice's place.

Torrie Cox could lose return job
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that Cox might lose his job as the Buccaneers' kickoff returner, according to head coach Jon Gruden. He muffed the opening kickoff in Week 5.
