Coach talks up Christian Ponder; reviews aren't as hot

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/20/2013) As the Vikings wrapped up minicamp Thursday coach Leslie Frazier had kind words about his quarterback, Christian Ponder. ESPN's NFC North blogger, however, did not.

Frazier praised Ponder's accuracy, saying he's been working hard at that specifically this offseason. He also said Ponder is maturing as a passer and is beginning to become more vocal in the huddle and in the locker room.

"His football above the neck has been impressive in the time that we've been out here on the field practicing," Frazier added per the official team website. "So he's got the athletic ability but you want him to make good decisions under the center and some of the things he's done in these practices kind of leads me to believe, along with our staff, that he's grown a lot in that area making better decisions with the football, which should in turn help us down the line."

ESPN's Kevin Seifert might respectfully disagree, noting that in minicamp work Ponder's arm was hit-or-miss, sometimes dropping the ball perfectly between the defender and his intended receiver -- or floating five yards over the head of his intended target. Ponder was picked off a number of times this spring including twice by defensive end Brian Robison in the same practice. Still, Seifert realizes Ponder should begin the year starting for the Vikings.
