Rams claim two on Sunday Rams claim two on Sunday Updated 9/6/2009
Anthony Smith, DB GB
News: The Rams claimed S Anthony Smith and DT LaJuan Ramsey on waivers Sunday, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Analysis: Smith was released by Green Bay over the weekend; Ramsey was cut by Tennessee. Both players should be left on waivers in all Fantasy leagues.
Packers waive a bunch Saturday Packers waive a bunch Saturday Updated 9/5/2009
Anthony Smith, DB GB
News: The Packers released WR Jake Allen, QB Brian Brohm, CB Trevor Ford, WR Kole Heckendorf, LB Danny Lansanah, RB Kregg Lumpkin, DE Alfred Malone, WR Ruvell Martin, DL Dean Muhtadi, LB Cyril Obiozor, CB Joe Porter, S Anthony Smith, RB Tyrell Sutton, DE Ronald Talley and DL Anthony Toribio on Saturday. Analysis: Brohm might well find his way on to a practice squad somewhere, but like the rest of the guys on this list, has no Fantasy value at this time.
FS Smith to start for Packers? FS Smith to start for Packers? Updated 6/11/2009
Anthony Smith, DB GB
News: Players don't win NFL jobs during voluntary, non-contact practices in June. That said, it certainly doesn't hurt Anthony Smith's case that he's out there practicing with the Green Bay Packers' first-team defense this spring while both of last year's starting safeties, Nick Collins and Atari Bigby, sit out. And having signed with the Packers in March after three seasons in Pittsburgh, Smith has a leg up on learning the 3-4 defensive alignment new Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers is installing this offseason. Smith has been practicing with the No. 1 defensive unit as Bigby recovers from last season's lingering injuries and Collins, who is believed to be unhappy with his contract, deals with family issues. "He was the furthest ahead of anybody when we started this process," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. "He looks very natural out there. He's an athletic safety. I can see why people were as high on him as they are, and I think he'll definitely factor in our safety group." Analysis: Smith could wind up landing a prominent role for the Packers in 2009, so he's one to keep an eye on. He'd have to upset Nick Collins (or Atari Bigby) from the starting lineup, though. It helps that he has experience in the 3-4 scheme. He's worth a late-round pick in the deepest of IDP leagues this summer.
FS Smith signs with Packers FS Smith signs with Packers Updated 3/10/2009
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: The Green Bay Packers signed safety Anthony Smith on Monday, their first free-agent deal of the offseason. The 6-foot, 200-pound Smith spent his first three seasons in Pittsburgh and has four interceptions in 46 games. Several media outlets reported the Packers agreed to terms with Smith last week, but the team didn't announce the deal until Monday. New Packers secondary coach Darren Perry was Smith's defensive backs coach in 2006, and Smith's experience playing in a 3-4 defensive alignment will come in handy as the Packers change their 4-3 defensive scheme going into next season. Analysis: Smith could wind up landing a prominent role for the Packers in 2009, so he's one to keep an eye on. He'd have to upset Nick Collins (or Atari Bigby) from the starting lineup, though. Perhaps he'll only play in certain situations. It helps that he has experience in the 3-4 scheme.
Steelers list Week 16 inactives Steelers list Week 16 inactives Updated 12/21/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: The Steelers listed the following players as inactive for Week 16 at Tennessee: QB Dennis Dixon (third QB), OL Marvel Smith, DL Orpheus Roye, DL Scott Paxson, OL Tony Hills, DB Fernando Bryant, DB Anthony Smith and LB Bruce Davis. Analysis: None of the players on this list should be considered viable Fantasy options. They are not in a position to contribute regular stats as they aren't in line for regular playing time. They've got some depth chart climbing to do and should be left on the waiver wire.
Texans-Steelers inactives named Texans-Steelers inactives named Updated 9/7/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Notable inactives from the Texans-Steelers Week 1 game include: Texans LB Xavier Adibi, DB Dominique Barber, DL Tim Bulman, DL Earl Cochran, DL Frank Okam and DB Eugene Wilson. For the Steelers, QB Dennis Dixon, WR Limas Sweed, DB Anthony Smith, RB Gary Russell, TE Sean McHugh, DL Bruce Davis and DL Orpheus Roye are inactive. Analysis: None of these players were expected to produce enough stats to warrant use for Fantasy play in the first place. Keep them off of Fantasy rosters.
A. Smith records three solo tackles A. Smith records three solo tackles Updated 8/14/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Pittsburgh DB Anthony Smith, questionable for Thursday's preseason game against the Bills with a groin injury, played and recorded four tackles -- three solo. Analysis: Smith is a low-end DB in IDP leagues. He should only be used as a bye-week or injury replacement in 2008. Leave him on the waiver wire in all formats until further notice.
Smith to miss preseason opener Smith to miss preseason opener Updated 8/7/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Steeelers head coach Mike Tomlin ruled out four players for Friday's preseason opener against the Eagles, including strong safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) and nose tackle Casey Hampton, who is working his way into shape. Each are on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, though Tomlin said both Polamulu and Hampton are "close" as far as starting to practice. In addition to Polamalu and Hampton, Tomlin said free safety Anthony Smith (groin) and tight end Cody Boyd (shoulder) won't play against the Eagles. Smith practiced yesterday, but he has been sidelined for most of training camp. Analysis: Smith is a low-end DB in IDP leagues. He should only be used as a bye-week or injury replacement in 2008. Leave him on the waiver wire in all formats until further notice.
Clark looks good thus far Clark looks good thus far Updated 5/28/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Steelers DB Ryan Clark has looked good this offseason. Clark has looked good during OTAs but what will be more telling is how he handles the rigors of training camp. That is the ultimate test of conditioning and endurance, and camp will almost surely reveal where Clark is physically and how much he can help the Steelers this season. Free safety is the one area on defense where the Steelers have uncertainty and not just because of Clark. For as much promise as Anthony Smith showed at times he regressed badly at the end of last season, and Mike Tomlin has said himself that the third-year professional is at a crossroads at this stage of his career. Nothing would be better for the Steelers than for both Clark and Smith to rebound and give the team two quality players at free safety no matter who wins the starting job in training camp. Analysis: Clark would push Smith for the starting job. Neither has much Fantasy value at this point, but keep an eye on what happens during training camp.
DB Smith guarantees little use in 2007 DB Smith guarantees little use in 2007 Updated 1/25/2008
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Steelers DB Anthony Smith, who famously guaranteed a victory over the Patriots, didn't put up overwhelming stats in 2007. He had 69 tackles (53 solo) with two interceptions and one forced fumble. Analysis: Smith is a low-end DB in IDP leagues. He should only be used as a bye-week or injury replacement in 2008.
DB Smith has eight tackles DB Smith has eight tackles Updated 10/28/2007
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Steelers DB Anthony Smith had eight tackles Sunday against the Bengals. Analysis: Smith is a low-end DB and should only be used if needed in Week 9 against Baltimore if needed.
Steelers defenders play big Steelers defenders play big Updated 12/17/2006
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: Notable Steelers defenders from Week 15 at Carolina include: LB James Farrior (eight total tackles, sack), LB Larry Foote (five total tackles, sack), DE Aaron Smith (three tackles, sack), DE Brett Keisel (1.5 sacks, three tackles), LB Clark Haggains (three total tackles, one-half sack), CB Ike Taylor (two total tackles, interception) and DB Anthony Smith (two total tackles, interception). LB Joey Porter had one tackle. Analysis: Of these defenders, Farrior, Foote and Porter are worth using in IDP league play vs. Baltimore in Week 16.
Polamalu unlikely to play Polamalu unlikely to play Updated 12/4/2006
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers may be without injured DB Troy Polamalu for Thursday night's AFC North game against Cleveland. Polamalu sat out the Steelers' 20-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday, when safety Ryan Clark (groin) also was hurt. Polamalu injured his knee the week before against Baltimore. With a short week of preparation and recovery time before the Cleveland game, coach Bill Cowher wasn't optimistic that the injured players will be ready by Thursday. Polamalu had a sprained knee, and the team has not said when it expects the All-Pro safety to return. If Polamalu and Clark can't play, Tyrone Carter and rookie Anthony Smith would start at safety. Because of the injuries, the Steelers made a number of roster moves Monday. They re-signed cornerback Chidi Iwuoma, who was cut earlier this season. Analysis: Keep Polamalu reserved unless given clearance to play. Clark, Smith, Carter and Iwuoma have minimal Fantasy value at this point.
Smith helping on special teams Smith helping on special teams Updated 10/3/2006
Anthony Smith, DB PIT
News: FS Anthony Smith, spectacular on special teams in the preseason, has just two special teams tackles and has not yet played on defense. He was the team's second-round pick this year. Analysis: Consider Smith a long-term keeper option in deeper IDP dynasty leagues. He could get his chance come 2007.
Steelers will start Clark at S Steelers will start Clark at S Updated 9/2/2006
News: Coach Bill Cowher designated Ryan Clark as the starting free safety ahead of Tyrone Carter and rookie Anthony Smith. Clark, formerly with the Redskins, was the Steelers' only major offseason pickup. He signed as a free agent after Chris Hope left to play for Tennessee. Analysis: Clark likely begins the season as a low-end Fantasy IDP. The Steelers' solid defense could make him a decent scorer, though. Don't consider Carter or Smith in IDP leagues at this point.
FS Smith stamped to the Steelers FS Smith stamped to the Steelers Updated 7/26/2006
News: The Steelers and third-round pick Anthony Smith agreed to a multi-year deal. The former Syracuse Orange will compete for a spot along the Steelers' safety depth chart. Analysis: Smith could start for Pittsburgh by 2007 or 2008, so he may be worth taking as a late-round pick in rookie-only drafts in deeper keeper leagues. As for 2006, he may play mostly on special teams and in passing coverage schemes, so don't expect much statistically.
Steelers grab Anthony Smith Steelers grab Anthony Smith Updated 5/1/2006
News: Syracuse FS Anthony Smith was the second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Analysis: Smith will enter training camp buried on the Steelers' depth chart, behind Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter at free safety. Look for him on special teams but don't consider him for any leagues.
