News: The Jaguars spent four draft picks on defense in April, none higher than the second-round choice on Clemson defensive end Andre Branch. Joining him are Nevada linebacker Brandon Marshall, FSU cornerback Mike Harris and Ashland defensive tackle Jeris Pendleton.
Analysis: It's been a long time since the Jaguars defense had a quality pass rush; they're hoping Branch can contribute something along the D-line. Marshall should provide good depth at linebacker as should Harris and Pendleton at their respective positions. With defensive coordinator Mel Tucker returning to the team and Aaron Ross joining the squad, the Jaguars appear to be about as good as they were last year, which is to say they're not quite a No. 1 DST but a good No. 2 option. If you like to play the waiver wire for DSTs from week to week, the Jaguars aren't a terrible choice to begin the year as they play at Minnesota in Week 1.
News: The Jaguars have retained defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who was the interim coach after Jack Del Rio was fired in November and interviewed for the head job. Tucker also interviewed to be Minnesota's defensive coordinator. Jacksonville's defense flourished under Tucker last season, finishing sixth in the league despite several key injuries.
Analysis: This is a big positive for Jacksonville, one of the surprise defenses of the year thanks in big part to their strong cornerbacks, linebackers and defensive tackles. They'll add some quality players this offseason and have a chance at being a capable DST come the 2012 season. We might consider them worth a late-round pick in deeper leagues.
News: The Jaguars defense throttled Colts QB Dan Orlovsky, sacking him three times and picking him off twice -- and adding a fumble recovery for good measure -- in Week 17. The Jaguars held the Colts to 13 points.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST wasn't great to use very often this season but they came through in Week 17. If they make some solid improvements this offseason then this unit could be a sleeper in 2012 Fantasy drafts.
News: Entering its Week 16 matchup against Tennessee, the Jacksonville defense was concerned about stopping Titans RB Chris Johnson, who has rebounded in the second half following a slow start to the season. However, the Jaguars were dominated through the air and surrendered 350 passing yards to QB Matt Hasselbeck in a 23-17 loss to the Titans on Saturday. Jacksonville managed just one sack of Hasselbeck as he connected with two different receivers -- TE Jared Cook and WR Damian Williams -- for eight receptions.
Analysis: The Jaguars' secondary has been a sore point for the team all season as injuries have forced immense turnover in the unit. But Jacksonville produced two interceptions on Hasselbeck -- just the second time in its past six games the defense has picked off an opposing quarterback multiple times. The Jaguars also recorded three takeaways despite permitting a whopping 407 total yards. Consider Jacksonville a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 17 against lowly Indianapolis.
News: During its Week 16 matchup on Saturday, Tennessee will face a Jacksonville defense that looks completely different than the unit the Titans faced in the teams' season opener. The Jaguars have placed 11 defensive backs on injured reserve this season, but still rank fourth in the NFL against the pass (196.9 yards per game). "With the amount of guys on IR they have, you expect them to be at the bottom of the list statistically on defense, said Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck, who had a 93.1 passer rating in the first meeting. "Its not the case at all."
Analysis: One reason the Jaguars are ranked fifth overall on defense is that their punishing run game has helped keep the ball away from opposing offenses, noted Tennessee coach Mike Munchak. In the first game, the Titans held the ball for just 20:22. "If Maurice Jones-Drew has a big game that's not good for us because they want to shorten the game," Munchak said. Jacksonville also managed just one turnover and two sacks in its first meeting with Tennessee. Consider the Jaguars a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 16.
News: Jacksonville couldn't contain Atlanta on Thursday night as they gave up 27 points in the first half and ended up losing the contest 41-14. The Jaguars managed to get to Matt Ryan just once in the game. DB Drew Coleman said the Falcons came out with a different-than-expected look Thursday. They came out with a full head of steam and got on us quick. We figured theyd run the ball, but they came out in the no-huddle. Things snowballed from there." The Jaguars did score off a blocked punt, which ended the shutout. This was the second straight week the Jaguars scored on defense or special teams.
Analysis: Jacksonville has been pretty decent on defense this season, but just couldn't hang with Atlanta in Week 15. Looking ahead the Jags face the Titans in Week 16 and Chris Johnson has remembered how to play football. Jacksonville did a good job containing him back in Week 1, but chances are they won't be able to do so again. Fantasy owners should not be starting the Jaguars DST at this stage of the season.
News: The Jaguars DST has a tall task ahead of them if they are going to duplicate the effort they put forth Week 14 against Tampa Bay in Week 15. Playing at Atlanta on Thursday, the Jaguars DST will definitely have its hands full. The Falcons are playing some excellent football right now and are allowing the ninth-fewest Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units on the year. QB Matt Ryan has only thrown two interceptions in his last four games entering Week 15 and he's only been sacked five times over that span.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST had a massive performance Week 14 against the Buccaneers with three sacks, nine turnovers forced -- including six fumble recoveries -- and two defensive or special teams touchdowns while limiting Tampa to just 14 points and 280 yards of offense. That won't happen Week 15. Playing against San Diego Week 13, the Jaguars DST gave up 433 yards, 38 points and didn't record a single sack or forced turnover. Week 14 was an aberration and the Jaguars DST is not a recommended Fantasy start for Week 15.
News: Jacksonville accomplished a rare feat for only the second time in franchise history during a 41-14 victory over Tampa Bay in Week 14. The Jaguars scored on offense, defense and special teams for the first time since Nov. 1, 1998 at Baltimore. The win halted a three-game losing streak for Jacksonville, which limited the Buccaneers to only 280 total yards. The Jaguars also forced an astounding seven turnovers to set a season high.
Analysis: There havent been many highlights for Jacksonville this season, but its defense continues to post impressive performances. The Jaguars entered Sundays contest having permitted just 19.8 points per game this season and held Tampa Bay scoreless after halftime. Jacksonville also halted a two-game skid without a sack and took down Bucs QB Josh Freeman three times. Fantasy owners should view the Jaguars as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 15 at Atlanta on Thursday night.
News: Jacksonville LB Paul Posluszny said Mel Tuckers involvement in the defense hasnt changed since the defensive coordinator took over as interim coach last week. Hes still running the defensive meetings and making the calls," said Posluszny, who leads the team with 95 tackles this season. "Hes still kept all the responsibility of being a defensive coordinator. The Jaguars host Tampa Bay in Week 14 on Sunday.
Analysis: Despite a lowly 3-9 record, Jacksonville has done a solid job limiting opponents and is permitting only 19.8 points per game this season. However, the Jaguars faltered last Sunday against San Diego and were chewed up for 433 total yards -- the most they have allowed since Week 4 against New Orleans (503). Jacksonville is still ranked among the top 10 in the NFL with 34 sacks despite not taking down an opposing quarterback in the past two outings. Fantasy owners should consider the Jaguars a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 14.
News: The Jaguars had a hard time slowing down the Chargers in Week 13. They allowed 433 yards of total offense, including 294 through the air, in the 38-14 loss. Jacksonville gave up three passing touchdowns to QB Philip Rivers and were unable to pick him off or sack the 30-year-old. RBs Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews ran for a combined 136 yards with two scores against their defense.
Analysis: Jacksonville gave up 30-plus points for the first time since Week 5 on Monday night as their pass rush could not disrupt Rivers much. With all of the injuries they have suffered on defense thus far, it doesn't look as though the unit will get better down the stretch. With the Buccaneers on the schedule for Week 14, continue to view the Jaguars DST as a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Jaguars will be facing off against a potent offense in the Chargers in Week 13. San Diego ranks fifth in the league in passing, putting up over 276 yards per game, and 17th in rushing. Jacksonville sports the fourth-best pass defense in the NFL and rank 14th against the run. The Jaguars have recorded 23 sacks thus far with 10 interceptions and one DST score.
Analysis: The Jaguars have dealt with a myriad of injuries on defense this season but still have been able to limit teams to fewer than 20 points per game. DLs Aaron Kampman and Terrance Knighton are questionable heading into Monday night, which if they play would supply a big boost for their front-seven. Still, the Chargers can light up the score board at any given point so continue to view the Jaguars as more of a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 13.
News: The Jaguars DST did not play well Sunday against Houston in Week 12, but they did score a touchdown when Ashton Youboty returned an Arian Foster fumble 38 yards for a touchdown. Otherwise, the Jaguars DST had no sacks or interceptions in a 20-13 loss. On special teams, Deji Karim led the way with two kickoff returns for 55 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is a low-end Fantasy unit in the majority of leagues. Ignore them in all formats in Week 13 against San Diego.
News: Despite a lowly 3-7 record, the Jacksonville defense has been the lone bright spot for the Jaguars this season. However, injuries are starting to take a toll on the team's third-ranked defense. The Jaguars have been without DL Aaron Kampman much of the season, and have placed three starters on injured reserve in the last two weeks: DB Rashean Mathis, LB Clint Session and DB Derek Cox. In addition, Jacksonville DL Matt Roth, who has 3 1/2 sacks this season, was already ruled out for Week 12 against Houston.
Analysis: The Jaguars are ranked fourth in the NFL in pass defense and are allowing just 189 yards per game. That unit could be in for another quality game against the Texans, who will start Matt Leinart at quarterback following a season-ending injury to Matt Schaub. Jacksonville has not permitted multiple passing touchdowns since Week 5. However, Houston still boasts star RB Arian Foster, who carved up the Jaguars for 112 rushing yards and a touchdown in the teams' first meeting. Consider Jacksonville a marginal DST option for Week 12.
News: Jacksonville held Cleveland to just two touchdowns Week 11, but it wasn't enough in a 14-10 loss. Cleveland finished with 334 yards, including 148 rushing yards. Chris Ogbonnaya became just the third RB, joining Rashard Mendenhall and Arian Foster, to rush for 100-plus yards against Jacksonville. The Jaguars picked off QB Colt McCoy at the goal line and sacked him twice in the loss.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense have been the one saving grace for them this season. While the offense has struggled behind a rookie QB, the defense ranks as one of the best in the NFL. Looking ahead to Week 12, Jacksonville hosts Houston, which would normally be a tough matchup. However, QB Matt Schaub is out with a foot injury, so Matt Leinart takes over under center. Houston still has a great rushing attack led by Arian Foster and Ben Tate, but the Jaguars DST will be a serviceable Fantasy option Week 12.
News:The Sports Xchange notes don't be surprised if the Jaguars and Browns play a low-scoring game Week 11. The Jaguars rank 32nd in offensive yardage and 31st in points scored, while the Browns are 30th in offensive yardage and 29th in points scored. Jacksonville is also fourth in total defense and sixth in scoring defense, while Cleveland is 11th in scoring defense and sixth in total defense. "We're kind of similar squads in terms of we're both trying to find our rhythm offensively, both playing good defense, and so I think we're expecting a good battle," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said.
Analysis: This is the fourth year in a row the teams have met and the Browns won in 2008 at Jacksonville and at home in the 2009 season finale by the same 23-17 score. The Jaguars then won in Jacksonville last year by a 24-20 margin. The Jaguars had six turnovers on the day and turned it over five consecutive times in the second half and still won. Week 11 will also be the first game the Jaguars will play this season without Rashean Mathis, who tore his ACL last week against the Colts. Jacksonville still has enough talent on defense to make a difference and have a favorable matchup, so consider the Jaguars DST a viable Fantasy option Week 11.
News: The Jaguars DST did not exactly face the toughest opponent in the Week 10 win at Indianapolis. The Colts have been putrid this season and the Jaguars DST had little trouble in earning the 17-3 win. The Jaguars DST held Indy to just 212 total yards of offense in the game and forced three turnovers. Two of those turnovers came on interceptions as the Jaguars knocked starter Curtis Painter out of the game. Finally, the Jaguars DST finished with five sacks in the game and Jeremy Mincey had 2.5 of them.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST also held Baltimore to seven points and just 146 yards Week 7 as the unit has been pretty darn good in two of its last three games. The Jaguars DST head into Week 11 at Cleveland, a team that isn't exactly known for its powerhouse offense. The Jaguars DST should be considered a sleeper start or bye-week replacement for the Week 11 game against the Browns.
News: The Jaguars defense has managed to perform like a top-five unit in 2011 despite getting no help from the league's 32nd-ranked offense. And it might be on the verge of its best performance yet Week 10 at Indianapolis. The Colts rank 31st in offense, averaging 282.8 yards per game, and 30th in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game. They also allow 14.7 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, fourth-most in the NFL.
Analysis: The Jaguars have limited four teams to less 20 points this season, including the Steelers and the Ravens. If they're capable of doing that to those teams, think of what they're capable of doing to the Colts -- one of the few teams who might be in as bad of a situation offensively as they are. The Jaguars DST lacks the kind of playmakers needed to stand out in Fantasy, but as well as it has played as a whole this season, it's a definite sleeper for this matchup.
News: The Jaguars DST did little Sunday at the Texans in Week 8 in a 24-14 loss. The Jaguars had just two sacks, but they forced two fumbles with no interceptions. On special teams, Deji Karim had three kickoff returns for 57 yards, and Mike Thomas had two punt returns for 12 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has minimal Fantasy value in the majority of leagues. They should not be used in most formats. The Jaguars are off in Week 9 before playing at the Colts in Week 10.
News: During the 2010 campaign, Jacksonville owned one of the worst defenses in the NFL as the Jaguars finished their third straight season without a winning record. Jacksonville ranked 28th in yards allowed and 27th in points allowed per game last year, but the Jaguars currently rank in the top 10 in both categories this season. They have held five of their seven opponents under 300 yards this season. I felt strongly this would be a very good, solid defense, coach Jack Del Rio said. Were nearing the midway point and I think its obvious it is.
Analysis: Jacksonville, which permitted 146 yards of total offense during a stunning win over Baltimore in its last game, will look to continue the momentum in Week 8 against first-place Houston. The Jaguars held Ravens RB Ray Rice to 28 yards Monday, but the task could be tougher Sunday. They will be facing the league's fifth-best rushing team (139.9 ypg) fueled by Arian Foster and backup Ben Tate. Jacksonville has racked up six sacks in its past two games, but Fantasy owners should consider the Jaguars a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 8.
News: The Jaguars DST turned in one of its better performances of the season in Week 7 against the Ravens. Jacksonville held Baltimore to just 146 yards of total offense in the 12-7 victory, including just 34 yards on the ground. The unit was able to hold RB ray Rice to a season-low 28 yards rushing and forced a pair of turnovers in the victory, including an interception by Drew Coleman, which sealed the win late in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars also sacked Joe Flacco three times and only allowed the Ravens to convert on two of their 12 third-down attempts. All week, its been Ravens defense this, Ravens defense that. That worked to our advantage. That was something we honed in on all week, that people dont respect our defense," DL Terrance Knighton said.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense came to play on Monday night and totally threw Baltimore off their game. The Ravens could not run or throw against the unit and were held off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter. While the Jaguars' DST has struggled for most of the season, their latest effort should give the unit some confidence as they now get ready to face the Texans in Week 8. However, Houston's high-powered offense could provide a ton of mismatches for the Jaguars, so consider Jacksonville a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 8.
News: The Jaguars defense could be in for a long game in Week 7 against the Ravens. Baltimore enters Monday ranked 12th in the league in rushing and 13th in passing. Jacksonville sports the NFL's eighth-best pass defense, but rank 19th against the run. The Jaguars have recorded 11 sacks thus far with six interceptions and three forced fumbles.
Analysis: While the Jaguars actually matchup well with the Ravens, their offense will likely have a hard time holding onto the ball which will leave their defense on the field for long periods of time. That being the case, consider their DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 7.
News: After allowing Pittsburgh to march for 315 yards in the first half, Jacksonville inched back into Sunday's game with a remarkable strong effort in the second half. The Jaguars surrendered just 55 yards after halftime, but the Jaguars still came up short in a 17-13 loss in Week 6. "It's tough," Jacksonville LB Paul Posluszny said after the team's fifth consecutive loss. "We are only a couple of plays away from being a winning football team. We are just not making enough plays to change the game or have a big impact. We are in a tough situation right now."
Analysis: The Jaguars entered Sundays game ranked No. 8 in the NFL in total defense, and had allowed four of their five opponents to less than 300 yards in a single game. However, they struggled against the Steelers' rejuvenated running game and permitted an average of 10 yards per play during the first half. Jacksonville did rebound nicely and sacked Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger three times after halftime. Fantasy owners should consider Jacksonville a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 7 against Baltimore.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that DL Aaron Kampman, who has yet to play this season because of a knee injury, will make his 2011 debut in Week 6 at Pittsburgh, barring a setback. Jacksonville ranks 10th in the league against the pass and run while the Steelers rank 12th and 17th in rushing and passing, respectively.
Analysis: The Jaguars have statistically done well in Kampman's absence, but getting back an elite pass rusher shouldn't can't hurt. However, don't be surprised if Kampman is limited as he gets back into game shape. Also, we need to see if he can still play at his old level coming off major knee problems, so temper expectations initially. The Jaguars DST also remains a low-end option.
News: The Jaguars held the Bengals to just 239 total net yards, but they couldn't keep them out of the end zone in a 30-20 loss in Week 5. The Bengals had an especially difficult time gaining yards on the ground, as the Jaguars' defense yielded a total of 77 rushing yards. DB Dwight Lowery also pitched in, picking off Bengals QB Andy Dalton early in the second quarter, and DL Jeremy Mincey and DL John Chick sacked Dalton.
Analysis: The Jaguars' defense had a decent performance against the Bengals, but Cincinnati doesn't rank among the league's better offensive units. The Jags could have a tougher time against the Steelers in Week 6, and in most weeks, the Jaguars DST is not worth starting.
News: Over the last two weeks, the Jaguars have faced the Saints and Panthers, who rank second and third, respectively, in offensive yardage in the league. In Week 5, they will face a lesser offensive force in the Bengals. Cincinnati currently ranks 20th in offensive yardage and 23rd in points scored. Through the first four weeks, the Jags' defense has struggled, and their DST ranks 25th among all teams in Fantasy points.
Analysis: The Jags have been a middle-of-the-road defensive unit at best so far this year. While the Bengals offer a better matchup than what Jacksonville has seen over the last two weeks, it's still probably not enough to make them a viable option in most leagues. Owners in virtually all formats should look to other DST alternatives in Week 5.
News: The Jaguars held the Saints to their lowest point total of the season in Week 4, giving up 23 points in a 23-10 loss. However, they allowed the Saints to rack up 503 yards of offense in the game. Jacksonville forced two interceptions in the game and managed three sacks.
Analysis: Outside of a 32-3 shellacking in Week 2 at the Jets, the Jaguars defense has been surprisingly effective throughout the first month of the season. The Jaguars have been in the lower third of the league in Fantasy production, however, and remain a unit to avoid outside of deep, deep formats. They'll be most useful now that the bye weeks will begin in Week 5, but we recommend to keep looking for help. They'll take on the Bengals in Week 5.
News: The Jaguars will be up against one of the stronger offenses in the league in Week 4 against the Saints. Through the first three weeks of the season, the Saints have totaled the second most yards in the league, averaging 437.7 yards per game. They have scored the second most points in the league (104).
Analysis: The Jaguars have been the seventh least effective defensive unit in Fantasy to this point and things do not figure to get much better in Week 4. Fantasy owners have looked beyond the Jaguars so far this season and would be advised to continue that trend given this terrible matchup in Week 4.
News: The Jaguars defense, which entered the game ranked fifth against the pass but only 14th against the run, did a good job of slowing down rookie QB Cam Newton at Carolina in Week 3, limiting him to 158 passing yards and the Panthers offense to 265 total yards. The Jaguars didn't record any sacks or force any turnovers, though. They allowed 16 points in the loss.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST was once again solid but unspectacular. It typically doesn't allow many yards but doesn't have enough playmakers to stand out as a viable Fantasy option. Given its rocky matchup against the Saints in Week 4, the Jaguars DST should remain on waivers in Fantasy.
News: The Jaguars defense, which allowed less than 300 total yards to each of its first two opponents, ranks fifth against the run so far this season, allowing 72.0 yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry. Unfortunately, it's visiting a Panthers team in Week 3 that has lived and died by the passing game so far, ranking second in the league with an average of 403.5 yards per game thanks to the efforts of rookie QB Cam Newton. The Jaguars haven't been quite as impressive against the pass this season, ranking 14th in the NFL -- and that's after facing Matt Hasselbeck and Mark Sanchez in their first two games.
Analysis: The Panthers have averaged 22.0 points over their first two games, so clearly they're not the cupcake matchup many Fantasy owners thought they'd be coming into the season, thanks in large part to Newton. The Jaguars have limited their opponents' yardage this season, but they haven't gotten the sacks and turnovers needed to put up good Fantasy numbers. Because this matchup isn't a particularly favorable one, you should continue to treat the Jaguars DST as a last resort in Fantasy.
News: During its Week 2 matchup on the road against the Jets, the Jacksonville defense limited New York to just 283 total yards, including just 110 in the second half. However, the Jaguars offense struggled to move the ball and QB Luke McCown threw four interceptions that kept the defense on the field often in a 32-3 loss to the Jets on Sunday. Jacksonville permitted three touchdowns in the rout as the Jets controlled time of possession by nearly seven minutes (33:23 to 26:37). The Jaguars did record two interceptions, but could not turn them into points in the game.
Analysis: A week after holding Tennessee star RB Chris Johnson to just 24 total rushing yards, Jacksonville's run defense stood firm again versus New York's tandem of Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson. The duo managed only 57 yards on the ground, but the Jets' punishing defense limited the Jaguars' chances. Jacksonville doesn't possess the mightiest offense so it's encouraging it boats a strong defense. Fantasy owners should consider the Jaguars a possible low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 3 at Carolina.
News: After limiting one of the premier running backs in the NFL, Tennessee's Chris Johnson, to just 24 rushing yards in a Week 1 victory, Jacksonville is hoping to duplicate that feat against the Jets' running attack in Week 2. The Jaguars' defense surprisingly held the Titans to just 43 total rushing yards in a 16-14 victory. New York did have trouble running the ball in its opener against Dallas as Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson combined for only 42 rushing yards on 15 carries. That total could prompt the Jets to air the ball out again against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Even after bottling up Tennessee for the second-lowest rushing total in the NFL during Week 1, Jacksonville did have minor troubles in the passing game. The Jaguars surrendered 249 passing yards, and Jets QB Mark Sanchez shredded the Cowboys secondary for 335 yards and two touchdowns last week. Despite the success against Tennessee, Jacksonville still seems too unreliable to trust against a strong offense and is not considered a worthwhile Fantasy DST for Week 2.
News: The Jaguars addressed their defense heavily in free agency in the offseason and it appeared to pay off Week 1 against the Titans. They limited superstar RB Chris Johnson to 49 total yards off offense (24 rushing) and held the opposition in check outside of one 80-yard score by Kenny Britt. They settled after the score and made Tennessee methodically move the ball. The Jacksonville defenders held on for the win in the end, sealing the deal with an interception. They limited the Titans offense to 292 yards and they recorded two sacks.
Analysis: The Jags defense held their own against one of the best running attacks in the NFL, and they limited the passing yards as well even at the end of the game in a must-pass situation. Tennessee has their offensive issues as well, but it was a solid start for Jacksonville nonetheless. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on their early-season progress with all the new additions, but the Jags DST may be worth utilizing based on their matchup. In Week 2, they face the Jets on the road, so it may not be the right time.
News: After finishing up 2010 as the No. 28 defense in all of football in terms of yards per game, Jacksonville addressed needs in the offseason -- especially at linebacker. They brought in Paul Posluszny and Clint Session to anchor the middle while adding DB depth with Dawan Landry and Drew Coleman. They head into the Week 1 matchup against the Titans looking for a fresh start. Tennessee had the No. 27 offense last season, but they have made just as many changes.
Analysis: Chris Johnson ended his holdout after getting a new deal, but he has practiced for just under two weeks. His conditioning remains an issue although the team admitted that they would not put a carry-limit on the dynamic back. New QB Matt Hasselbeck is expected to provide consistency in the offense in order to utilize weapons like WR Kenny Britt and TE Jared Cook. The Jags will have their hands full, but the new personnel will have their chance to strut their stuff early on. Fantasy owners should still consider the Jacksonville DST to be a wait-and-see option with so many new starters thoguh, so leave them reserved heading into the matchup.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, after saying he believed a defense that ranked 28th in the NFL last season would be improved this season, was asked why. His reply: I found some magic dust. Del Rio went on to say, I dont think theres any doubt, anybody here coaching or playing thats part of our defensive unit that doesnt think were going to be pretty good. So, well see.
Analysis: The Jaguars spent much of their offseason overhaul on revamping the defense. They added linebackers Paul Posluszny and Clint Session, while beefing up the secondary with Dawan Landry and Drew Coleman, so you can see why the team is excited. The defensive line also gets Aaron Kampman back from injury and Tyson Alualu is entering the second season of a promising career. The Jaguars DST remains a reserve Fantasy option on Draft Day as the defense is still a work in progress, but you have to be encouraged by the upgrades.
News: The Jaguars have been one of the most active teams in free agency, especially on the defensive end. They added two more possible starters on Friday, signing free agents DBs Dawan Landry and Drew Coleman. The team had already made a front-seven splash with the additions of LBs Paul Posluszny and Clint Session earlier in the week. The defense was ranked near the bottom of the NFL in several categories last season, and a new-look unit was expected to be put in place for 2011.
Analysis: New defensive coordinator Mel Tucker has several new pieces to utilize in the back-seven, to go along with the defensive line additions the team has addressed in the draft the last few years. If the new pieces could gel with the old, Jacksonville ha the chance to have an offensive resurgence against the elite offenses in the AFC South. Keep an eye on the preseason to see how the DST looks early on, but they should fair better than their bye-week replacement status from a year ago. Stay tuned.
News: The Jaguars defense will get a new look next season if for no other reason than defensive coordinator Mel Tucker finally getting the chance to do his job. Tucker's been toiling as coach Jack Del Rio's understudy with the defense, and owner Wayne Weaver has ordered that practice to stop. Finishing 28th in total defense (22nd vs. run and 28th vs. pass), the Jags were last in the league with 18 takeaways and yielded the most yards per play (6.45). Jacksonville's pass defense especially needs a boost -- they are still without a premier pass rusher and their secondary was a joke. The plan might start with shifting Rashean Mathis to free safety since he's getting beat at cornerback.
Analysis: The strength of the Jags' defense is against the run, and even that wasn't good in 2010 (they finished 22nd vs. the run and allowed 20 TDs to opposing RBs). Chances are the Jaguars won't make huge strides defensively this offseason, making their DST unit nothing more than a one-week replacement option during the 2011 season.
News: The Jaguars defense allowed 34 points on almost 500 yards of total offense during Week 17 against the Texans. Houston had success moving the ball both in the passing and running game against Jacksonville as both Arian Foster and Matt Schaub had solid outings. The Jaguars were unable to rack up any sacks and did not force any turnovers during the 34-17 loss.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST was not very good this season as the unit really struggled to get sacks and force many turnovers. While injuries played a big role in some of their struggles the unit will need to address a ton of issues in the offseason. They will need to bolster their front seven in order to sure up their run defense and the secondary allowed way too many big plays this season. Unless the unit adds a plethora of talent during the summer months, the Jaguars DST will a unit worth avoiding on Draft Day next season.
News: The Jaguars DST will have their hands full trying to slow down the Texans in Week 17. The Texans enter Sunday's matchup ranked fifth in total offense and are averaging 23.7 points per game. The Jaguars DST is ranked 30th in terms of Fantasy points and and have racked up 26 sacks and forced 18 turnovers this season.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has not been very good this season and has only accounted for one touchdown. The unit has struggled to accumulate sacks and force turnovers and will be facing a very good offensive team in Houston. We do not recommend starting the Jaguars DST on Sunday.
News: The Jaguars DST limited the Redskins to just 251 yards of offense in the Week 16 home game and still managed to lose. The Jaguars engineered a late-game comeback and sent the game into overtime, but ultimately lost 20-17 in the extra frame as David Garrard threw a costly interception. The DST forced just one turnover on a Rex Grossman interception and Grossman was sacked just once in the contest.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been porous for some time now and has never really been much of a Fantasy consideration. Heading into Week 17 at Houston, the team needs a big performance from the defense to help get them to the playoffs. That said, the Houston Texans usually put up a lot of offense and we cannot recommend starting the Jaguars DST in any Fantasy formats.
News: The Jaguars DST could not stop the Colts offense in the Week 15 34-24 loss. That said, Mike Thomas recorded a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter. It was the second-longest punt return for a touchdown for Jacksonville in team history and the first time any punt was returned for a TD since 2002. The Jaguars DST allowed 376 yards of offense in the game and did not force a single Indianapolis turnover. They could sack Peyton Manning just one time in the game.
Analysis: If not for the punt-return touchdown, the Jaguars DST would have done zilch in the Week 15 loss. Zilch is what they've done consistently as a unit of late. The Jaguars DST is not a reliable Fantasy option heading into Week 16 against Washington.
News: The Jaguars DST could do nothing right Week 14 against Oakland and is the third-lowest scoring Fantasy unit in the NFL behind only the Texans and Broncos entering Week 15 in Indianapolis. The Jaguars DST is one of just four units in the NFL that has yet to score a defensive or special teams touchdown, and only a handful of teams have allowed more total yards and points.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST just gave up 476 yards and 31 points to Oakland in Week 14 and the Colts on the road seems like it would pose a much stiffer test. The DST managed just five Fantasy points against the Colts Week 4 as they allowed 406 yards of offense and 28 points. Peyton Manning looked sharp again last week and should torch the Jaguars DST in Week 15. They are not a unit worth starting.
News: The Jaguars might have beaten the Raiders in Week 14, but the defense only did so much. They recorded three sacks, an interception of Kyle Boller and a forced fumble, but also allowed Darren McFadden to score three times and total just over 200 yards. Oakland ran for 153 yards, threw for 344 yards and put up 31 points.
Analysis: This is why the Jaguars DST isn't worth trusting. That goes triple when they play at Indianapolis in Week 15. If you're looking to lose in Fantasy, start this DST against Peyton Manning and Co.
News: Jacksonville hosts the Raiders in Week 14, a matchup that might actually not be that bad for the Jaguars. True, Oakland has averaged 22.5 points per game on the road this season, but 87 of their 135 cumulative road points came against divisional opponents including a 59-point shocker at Denver. Furthermore, the Raiders have run the ball better on the road than at home this season, and Jacksonville's run defense, while halting running backs out of the end zone over their last three games, still is allowing 130 total yards per game to running backs over that span. Additionally, the Jacksonville secondary is still a mess, though they match up fairly well with the Raiders and their weak pass attack.
Analysis: You'd have to be pretty desperate to need the Jaguars DST in Week 14. Expect a handful of points since the Raiders aren't the most disciplined team in the league, but options like the Falcons DST, Buccaneers DST and even the 49ers DST are all more appealing than the Jaguars.
News: The Jaguars DST held the Titans to a pair of field goals and 220 yards in a Week 13 win in Nashville. Jacksonville claimed a pair of interceptions and a sack.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST ranked as the second worst in standard Fantasy leagues coming into this matchup and had just two Fantasy points last week against the Giants, but they showed up on Sunday against a slumping Titans squad. In Week 14, the Jags will take on the Raiders, who can show up offensively on occasion. Continue to ignore this unit in all but the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: The Jaguars DST, which ranks second last in standard Fantasy leagues through 12 weeks, ahead of just the lowly Broncos, will try to limit Chris Johnson and the Titans in Week 13. The Jags DST has been held to four Fantasy points or less in two of the last three games.
Analysis: If rookie QB Rusty Smith was starting again for the Titans, the Jaguars might have been a sleeper option for Week 13, but Kerry Collins appears to be the guy on Sunday, which means you should continue to avoid the Jaguars DST in all Fantasy formats unless their matchup is ridiculously good.
News: The Jaguars defense could not survive a late rally by the Giants offense in a 24-20 loss to New York in Week 12. Jacksonville had managed to stop the Giants in the red zone and limit them to three field goals in the first three quarters before QB Eli Manning led New York on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives. The Giants also got a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. Both touchdowns were 26 yards or longer. The Giants finished with 361 yards (135 rushing). The Jaguars didn't get a sack of Manning and didn't force a turnover.
Analysis: Give the Jaguars credit for playing hard-nosed football for at least three quarters in Week 12. They did a great job with the Giants down two of their top playmakers -- Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks -- due to injuries. But the Giants finally were able to solve the Jaguars defense and it didn't help that Jacksonville couldn't really pressure Manning. Jacksonville proved Week 12 why the Jaguars DST isn't worth using in Fantasy. Although, they might be a sleeper option in the deepest of formats if Tennessee is forced to start rookie QB Rusty Smith again in Week 13 when Jacksonville travels to face the Titans. If Kerry Collins starts, then it's probably not worth using the Jaguars DST.
News: The Jaguars take a three-game winning streak into Week 12 against the Giants, a team that is riding a two-game losing streak. The Giants technically have the third best offense (389.6 ypg) and is seventh in scoring (25.3 ppg). But they enter Week 12 a banged up unit. The Giants are dealing with injuries along the offensive line and at receiver, where Hakeem Nicks (leg) and Steve Smith (pectoral) will both be out of action. The Jaguars defense now has the responsibility of covering the likes of Mario Manningham, Derek Hagan, Duke Calhoun and recently-signed Michael Clayton.
Analysis: The Jaguars get really lucky they will face a banged up Giants offense in Week 12. Jacksonville should also be ready to put into action the strip drill this week since the Giants have been fumbling a lot lately. Still, the Jaguars have allowed 20-plus points in four of their six wins this season, so they have had to rely on outscoring the opposition. The Jaguars DST remains a tough play in Fantasy Week 12.
News: Jacksonville effectively limited another star running back to a low yardage total in Week 11 on Sunday, containing Cleveland's Peyton Hillis to just 48 yards on 21 carries. Hillis did record 95 receiving yards but the Jaguars held the Browns to 283 total yards, marking the first time they have held an opponent under 300 yards this season. Jacksonville also tallied six sacks, the most since Nov. 9, 2008 at Detroit when the Jaguars had seven. "I don't feel like we stole the game,'' running back Maurice Jones-Drew said. "I've never seen a defense play like that in all my years in football, even in high school.''
Analysis: Well that was a bit unexpected. We knew savvy Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio would probably go strong after rookie quarterback Colt McCoy, but we didn't expect the defense to pile up six sacks. Jacksonville also limited Cleveland to just 15 first downs Sunday and picked off McCoy late in the fourth quarter for its only turnover. However, with the Giants and their top-notch rushing attack lurking in Week 12, it might be best to leave the Jaguars defense on the waiver wire.
News: After bottling up Houston running back Arian Foster in Week 10, the Jacksonville defense must now shift its focus to containing Cleveland star Peyton Hillis in the teams Week 11 matchup. The Jaguars are allowing opponents an average of 114.9 yards a game on the ground this season but their main struggle has been defending the pass (272.3 yards allowed per game). The Browns have been relying heavily on Hillis lately -- four consecutive games with at least 12 carries as rookie Colt McCoy builds confidence under center -- so it will be interesting to see their game plan for Sunday.
Analysis: The Jaguars, who have allowed 19.7 points per game to running backs this season, have been severely inconsistent defending the run this season. They have held just two opponents in their last six games to under 100 rushing yards and Hillis has been streaking for Cleveland. Consider all other defensive options for Week 11 before settling on Jacksonville, which should be viewed as a low-level No. 2 defense. In other words, use them as a last resort.
News: The Jaguars forced the game's only turnover on a Joel Dreesseen fumble late in the fourth quarter Week 10 against the Texans, but it ended up turning into a key turnover as it led to David Garrard's Hail Mary pass that won the game for Jacksonville on the final play. The Jaguars held Houston to three first-half points, but the Texans got on track with three second-half touchdowns. They ended up with 395 yards, including 314 from QB Matt Schaub. However, the Jaguars recorded no sacks.
Analysis: Pressuring the QB has been a huge problem for Jacksonville in 2010. It has just 14 sacks in nine games and it's a big reason why the Jaguars have allowed 20 or more points seven times this season. We don't know what to expect from the Jaguars defense on a weekly basis. It's a big reason why the Jaguars DST doesn't have much Fantasy appeal. Consider other options before settling on the Jaguars DST in Week 11. Jacksonville plays the Browns.
News: The Jaguars might have swept the Texans -- their Week 10 opponent -- in 2009, but not before Houston put up some points and yards. In two games, the Texans totaled 42 points and 702 yards. The Jaguars defense will once again try to slow down Houston in 2010, but it might be futile. Houston is sixth in total offense (370.1 ypg) and 11th in scoring offense (24.1 ppg). The Jaguars are 28th in total defense (386.2 ypg) and 29th in scoring defense (28.2 ppg).
Analysis: It's been really tough to gauge the Jaguars defense in 2010. Sometimes they look really good. Other times they look awful. In the end, the numbers haven't added up for the Jags or Fantasy owners. Jacksonville has allowed 26 or more points in six games. The Texans are one of the best offenses in the NFL, so consider using other Fantasy options before settling on the Jaguars DST in Week 10.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars DST can thank Tony Romo's injury for one of the best performances of the season for the unit in Week 8. Playing the Cowboys in Dallas and without Romo, the Jaguars intercepted starter Jon Kitna a season-high four times in the game and routed the Cowboys to win 35-17. The Jaguars DST allowed a late Jason Witten touchdown and would have held Dallas down even further. Dallas managed 415 total yards of offense in the game but could not score much as Kitna could not stop getting intercepted. The Jaguars DST forced four turnovers with Derek Cox getting two of the picks. They managed two sacks of Kitna in the game.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been terrible pretty much all season but boy were they opportunistic in Week 8 against the Cowboys. However, a few of the interceptions were tipped balls by Dallas receivers and throws the wideouts easily should have come down with. We really can't laud the Jaguars DST too much for the performance and they still gave up large chunks of offense. The Jaguars DST has been a poor option and should continue to be a poor option. That said, they are off Week 9 so keep them reserved in all leagues. The Jaguars DST returns week 10 against Houston.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars DST has a tall test approaching in Week 8 in Dallas. The Cowboys were just embarrassed on Monday night against the hated Giants and are looking for some retribution, especially now that QB Tony Romo won't be playing in the game. Still, the Jaguars DST doesn't really improve because of Romo's absence. "I know we want to see it be perfect right now," coach Jack Del Rio said. "Believe me, I'd love to see that. But it's coming." They have been the second-worst Fantasy unit in the NFL this season in front of only the Texans DST.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been a poor choice just about every single week of the season. They have allowed at least 306 yards of offense in every single game this season and since Week 1 against Denver, no team has scored fewer than 26 points against the Jaguars. The Cowboys have not been known to give opposing DSTs many Fantasy points this season and this is a nightmare matchup for the Jaguars DST. Avoid them at all costs.

News: The Jaguars DST did not play well in Sunday's game at Kansas City in Week 7. The Chiefs scored 42 points and racked up 426 yards of total offense, and the Jaguars forced no turnovers with only one sack. On special teams, Deji Karim had five kickoff returns for 105 yards, and Tiquan Underwood had two kickoff returns for 52 yards. Mike Thomas had one punt return for 49 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is not a good Fantasy unit and is not worth using in the majority of leagues. Keep the Jaguars DST reserved in all leagues in Week 8 at Dallas.
News: The Jaguars DST heads into Week 7 at Kansas City hoping to snap a poor streak of five games in a row with single digits in Fantasy points. The Jaguars DST had double digits in Fantasy points in Week 1 against Denver with 11, but they have combined for 20 Fantasy points over the past five games. The low point was Week 6 against Tennessee with no Fantasy points when they had no sacks or turnovers in a 30-3 loss. The Chiefs are coming off an offensive explosion in Week 6 against Houston with 31 points, 417 yards and no turnovers.
Analysis: Factor in a road trip on a short week for the Jaguars DST, and they shouldn't be expected to do much in this matchup. Ignore them in all leagues in Week 7.
News: The Jaguars DST was unable to stop the Titans in Week 6. The unit allowed 30 points on 324 yards and did not record a turnover or record a sack in the loss. The Jaguars DST surrendered 153 yards rushing and allowed backup Kerry Collins to complete 11 of his 16 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: he Jaguars DST has been offensive this season and Week 6 was no different. The unit struggles to force turnovers and have allowed at least 26 points in five of their six games. They head to Kansas City in Week 7 to face a Chiefs team that was been playing well of late and has tons of weapons on offensive. Fantasy owners should avoid using the Jaguars DST for the time being.
News: The Jaguars DST will have the tall task of trying to slow down Chris Johnson and Vince Young when the Titans head to Jacksonville in Week 6. The Jaguars DST is rankled 30th in terms of Fantasy points for DST units this season and the unit has had problems all season allowing big plays. They have allowed an average of 25 Fantasy points to opposing QBs, which is dead last and have allowed an average 32.40 Fantasy points to opposing WRs.
Analysis: Bottom line is the Jaguars DST unit has not been good this year. They are allowing 27.4 points per game and 385 yards of total offense over the first five weeks of the season. The unit has forced seven turnovers and recorded 11 sacks this season, but has struggled overall as a unit. We do not recommend starting them in Week 6 against the Titans.
News: The Jaguars DST did enough to get a win on Sunday of Week 5 in Buffalo. Jacksonville defeated the Bills 36-26 and allowed 306 yards of total offense in the game. That said, the Jaguars DST did not really help Fantasy owners much this week as they did not force a single Bills turnover in the game. Aaron Kampman finished the game with 1 1/2 sacks and Jacksonville finished with three on the day.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been offensive this season and Week 5 was no different despite playing a bumbling offensive team and winning the game handily. The Jaguars DST has four interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 11 sacks to its credit this season after games against Denver, San Diego, Philadelphia, Indianapolis and now Buffalo. They have been pathetic and are not a recommended unit for Week 6 against Tennessee.
News: When your DST's best defensive effort was limiting Denver to 363 yards and 17 points Week 1, Fantasy owners know they aren't dealing with a top-notch unit. The Jaguars DST has been dismal to say the least. Currently the third-worst Fantasy-point getting unit in the NFL, things should get easier for Week 5 in Buffalo. The Bills' offense has been ridiculously poor and is allowing the seventh-most average Fantasy points to opposing DSTs in the NFL this season. Three of the four teams they have played have managed at least three sacks against the Bills and Buffalo has turned the ball over at least twice in each of their last three contests.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has four interceptions, three fumble recoveries and eight sacks to its credit this season after games against Denver, San Diego, Philadelphia and Indianapolis. There is no doubt that the Bills will pose the least tough test of that grouping and the Jaguars DST should have its best week to date. All that considered, we still don't believe the Jaguars DST is a unit worth starting in Week 5. They will be better, but not good enough for owners to consider starting in Buffalo.
News: The Jaguars were able to contain Colts RB Joseph Addai to 63 yards on the ground, but gave up a total of 58 to the entire team. Jacksonville allowed Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning to throw for 352 yards -- the ninth time he's surpassed 300 yards against them -- but did manage to intercept one of his passes. Colts tight end Brody Eldridge dropped a pass near the goal line in the third quarter. Jaguars DB Anthony Smith made a shoelace grab on the ball and returned it near midfield. They almost had a second pick off Manning, which would have sealed their victory a little earlier, but David Jones couldn't hold onto the ball. Manning would take advantage of his second chance and tie the game at 28. Jacksonville would also force a fumble inside the 10-yard line after WR Reggie Wayne was stretching for a first down. They also recorded one sack on Manning in the Jaguars 31-28 victory.
Analysis: The Jaguars forced two three-and-outs in the first half against Manning, which is step in the right direction. Jacksonville had been giving up 115 yards on the ground, so they stepped it up on Sunday. Granted Indy is known as a passing team, but still the Jags won a small battle. They have eight sacks on the year which is over half of their total in 2009. Heading into Week 5 against Buffalo, Jacksonville should be able to contain the Bills offense. Buffalo had 242 total yards of offense in Week 4 against the Jets. While the matchup is more favorable next week, the Jaguars DST is not a recommend Fantasy option.
News: Heading into Week 4, Jacksonville's DST will have a tough task -- trying to contain Colts QB Peyton Manning. has more 300-yard passing games (eight) and more three touchdown games (six) against the Jaguars than any other quarterback. The Jaguars allowed Philly's Michael Vick to pass for 291 yards and three touchdowns in Week 3, so Manning could have another field day with Jacksonville's secondary. The defensive issues look even worse with the offense struggling under QB David Garrard. With the Colts clicking on all cylinders, it will not be an easy job for the Jaguars on Sunday. Jacksonville is allowing 289 yards through the air and 115 yards on the ground, but the most disturbing stat is they allow 27 points per game.
Analysis: Jacksonville was able to put some pressure on Vick in Week 3, sacking him three times, but he was able to find his receivers open all game. Granted Manning isn't mobile like Vick, but he'll obviously give the Jaguars fits all day. Jacksonville may add to their seven sacks on the season -- half of their 2009 season total -- but unless they force some turnovers, they will be in for a long afternoon. Heading into Week 4, the Jaguars DST should be avoided in all leagues.
News: The Jaguars did a serviceable job of holding the Eagles running game in check during Week 3 but did not have the same success against their passing game. Jacksonville gave up 291 yards passing and three touchdowns to QB Michael Vick, who also had a 17-yard touchdown scamper. They were able to hold Philadelphia to just 106 yards rushing but it was not enough as the Jaguars were defeated 28-3. S Sean Considine lead the way with seven tackles and a sack in the defeat.
Analysis: Jacksonville's front seven looked solid in Week 3 but their secondary was unable to control the likes of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. The Jaguars sacked Vick three times but were unable to force a turnover in a game where their offense was anemic. On the plus side though, Jacksonville has seven sacks through the first three games this season, which is half if their 2009 total. The Jaguars DST has given up 83 points in three games this season and should clearly be avoided in most leagues for Week 4 against the Colts.
News: The Jaguars defense has not fared too well through the first two weeks this season and will have their hands full when the Eagles come to town in Week 3. Jacksonville has given up 55 points through their first two games and rank 29th in the league against the pass. They also rank 20th against the run while Philadelphia has averaged over 155 rushing yards per game through the first two weeks, good for second best in the NFL. Jacksonville's defense forced San Diego into three turnovers -- two interceptions and one fumble recovery -- in Week 2.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST will have to find a way to contain QB Michael Vick in Week 3 or it will be a long day. Vick has thrown for 459 yards and three touchdown in his first two games while running for another 140. Jacksonville has not been able to stop the run so far this season, which is a bad omen. Fantasy owners would be wise to stay away from the Jaguars DST in Week 3 and continue to view them as a low-end No. 2 option.
News: Jacksonville's defense forced San Diego into three turnovers -- two interceptions and one fumble recovery -- in Week 2. They also blocked a punt, but unfortunately Jacksonville's offense handed the ball over six times, putting the Charges in good field position. The Chargers would go on to win the game 38-13. Jacksonville gave up 485 total yards of offense to the Chargers and recorded one sack.
Analysis: Jacksonville didn't get much pressure on Philip Rivers on Sunday, and managed just 14 sacks in all of 2009. Jacksonville hosts Philadelphia in Week 3, and their offense is coming off a solid week in Detroit. With another tough matchup on the horizon Jacksonville is not a recommend start in Week 3.
News: Jacksonville added DE Aaron Kampman in the offseason and his impact on the team is can already be seen. "He's a leader in the locker room and when you have those guys in the locker room and when you have those guys they are good for the entire team,'' defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said. Kampman is coming off ACL surgery last year, but recorded 1.5 sacks in Week 1. "Hes a freak. You look at him. Everybody looks at him and says who is this guy? If youre building a defensive end hed be your prototype. Clone him as a defensive end," CB Rashean Mathis said of Kampman. The Jaguars gave up 17 points and 363 total yards of offense in Week 1, and tallied three sacks and forced two turnovers.
Analysis: Jacksonville managed just 14 sacks all of last season, so getting three in Week 1 is a good sign. They'll need to put pressure on Chargers QB Philip Rivers to have a chance to win in Week 2. San Diego doesn't have Vincent Jackson or LaDainian Tomlinson, but they are still a force on offense. With a tough matchup ahead of them, the Jaguas are not a recommended start in Week 2.
News: The Jaguars DST gave up 17 points and 363 total yards to the Broncos in a Week 1 but managed to force two turnovers and record three sacks.
Analysis: The sack total for Jacksonville on Sunday was a revelation after they managed just 14 sacks all of last season, so that's certainly a positive. Things will certainly get a lot tougher in Week 2 though when the Jags head west to face San Diego, so we'll reserve judgement on this unit until after that contest. Do not risk them in Fantasy play for that difficult matchup.
News: The Jaguars DST will face the Broncos in Week 1 with a lot to prove as a disappointing unit in 2009. Last season, Jacksonville recorded just 14 sacks, which is the fifth-worst sack total in NFL history, but they have a re-tooled front seven this season and are re-implementing a 4-3 system, so they could surprise a few people.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST's stats are always a little inflated because of the tough offensive division they play in, but Denver is far from an elite offensive team with Brandon Marshall gone and Knowshon Moreno banged up. We wouldn't suggest starting them in Week 1 by any means, but owners in deeper leagues should keep an eye on them as the season progresses.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the loss of rookie defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith due to an Achilles' injury is having a more profound effect on the Jaguars than anticipated. That's because none of the backup defensive tackles to starters Terrance Knighton and Tyson Alualu have shown enough to satisfy the coaching staff. Smith was a third-round draft pick expected to become the first replacement for Knighton or Alualu, but his injury the first week of training camp will put him on injured reserve for the season. Atiyyah Ellison, Walter Curry and Leger Douzable are in line for two of remaining three roster spots at that position for the Jaguars who generally have only carried four defensive tackles. Douzable was a late pickup, having signed with the Jaguars in the second week of training camp. The free agent from Detroit has had a good showing and is pushing the other two to make the final cut.
Analysis: Another area in which Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio wanted clarity coming out of the Tampa Bay preseason game was at safety. Many thought entering training camp that Gerald Alexander had a lock on the strong safety spot where he started 10 times last year. But Alexander has been moved to the free safety and he hasn't had a good training camp. He now finds himself in a battle with Reggie Nelson who was a 13-game starter there a year ago. Alexander started the first two preseason games, but Nelson was in the starting lineup for the Jaguars most recent game. The battle at strong safety continued with Anthony Smith appearing to play well in the Tampa game. He's trying to hold off veteran Sean Considine and looks to be winning that battle. About the only positions that seem settled are defensive end, linebacker and cornerback. The Jaguars were in the bottom half of the league in total, passing and rushing defense in 2009. They have a lot of issues to clear up, so the Jaguars DST is a tough option to trust on Draft Day.
News: The Jaguars debuted their revamped defense as they began a three-day minicamp designed to give rookies a taste of the team's playbook and practice ways. They are attempting to retool a unit that ranked 23rd in total defense last season, gave up nearly 400 points and finished with an NFL-worst 14 sacks. The Jags fired defensive line coach Ted Monachino, released veteran defensive lineman Rob Meier and traded underachieving end Quentin Groves. They hired fiery assistant Joe Cullen, signed DE Aaron Kampman, drafted four linemen and then traded for veteran middle linebacker Kirk Morrison. They made several more moves after the draft, including parting ways with two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson and starting linebacker Clint Ingram. Jacksonville alternated defensive schemes in 2009, but plans to stick to a conventional 4-3 alignment this fall - a welcome change for players who never really got comfortable with the back-and-forth adjustments. "We're back to the basics," Mathis said. "We're back to what we've been doing since Jack's first day here, and I think it's going to help out a lot. We know we're not bouncing around. We're know we're actually going to run a 4-3 regardless of what happens, good or bad, and we're going to stick with it."
Analysis: The Jaguars' drafting of Cal DT Tyson Alualu with their first-round pick gives them a young, powerful tandem up front with second-year player Terrance Knighton, the kind of duo they built their defense with years ago with Henderson and Marcus Stroud. But with their secondary far from fixed and the pass rush improved but not considered strong, the Jaguars DST remains a No. 3 option. Remember, they play in the same division as Peyton Manning & Co., Matt Schaub & Co. and Chris Johnson & Co.
News: Jacksonville selected DT Tyson Alualu with the 10th pick in the NFL draft, a surprising move for a franchise that desperately needed someone to bolster sagging ticket sales. The 6-foot-2, 295-pound Hawaiian and former California standout will compete for the starting job two-time Pro Bowler John Henderson had occupied the last eight seasons. In 2009 Alualu led all Pac-10 Conference linemen with 60 tackles with 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Considering he played as an end in a 3-4 scheme, those numbers are considered very impressive. The Jaguars drafted several defensive players, including La. Tech DT D'Anthony Smith (third round), Central Arkansas DE Larry Hart (fifth round), Murray State DE Austen Lane (fifth round) and James Madison CB Scotty McGee (sixth round). The Jaguars also acquired run-stopping linebacker Kirk Morrison from the Raiders to help shore up the run defense behind their improved D-line.
Analysis: Jaguars GM Gene Smith and coach Jack Del Rio envision him playing alongside second-year player Terrance Knighton for the future - maybe even giving Jacksonville the kind of tackle tandem that Henderson and Marcus Stroud had for years. With Henderson out of the picture, expect Alualu to get tested as teams try to run right up the middle on the Jaguars. With their secondary far from fixed, the Jaguars DST remains a No. 3 option. Remember, they play in the same division as Peyton Manning & Co., Matt Schaub & Co. and Chris Johnson & Co. Their defense is going to struggle.
News: Thirty-year-old defensive end Aaron Kampman signed with the Jaguars on Sunday, giving the small-market franchise a big-time boost to their pass-rush woes. He is expected to switch back to a defensive end with the Jaguars, though his availability for the start of the 2010 season is in question after he tore his ACL in late November. He had 3.5 sacks as an outside linebacker last season but put up at least nine sacks in each of the previous three seasons as an end with a career-best 15.5 in 2006. Kampman thinks he'll be ready for the start of the season. "I anticipate being ready to get after it," Kampman said Monday. "My knee is great. I'm very encouraged by it."
Analysis: Kampman needs to prove he's healthy first, but once he feels good about his knee he should be able to help the Jaguars' lacking pass rush. The Jaguars finished with a franchise-low 14 sacks in 2009, the fifth-lowest total in NFL history. The Jags remain a one-week replacement option when they have a good matchup which should be available off waivers in the vast majority of leagues.
News: Jack Del Rio says he will remain as coach of the Jaguars after a meeting with team owner Wayne Weaver. The two met Tuesday amid reports that Del Rio, a Southern California alumnus, was the leading candidate to succeed Pete Carroll as coach at USC. The Jaguars ended the season on a four-game losing streak and faded out of playoff contention. If Weaver had fired Del Rio, he would have been owed more than $15 million.
Analysis: Del Rio will look to improve a defense that was OK against the run but awful against the pass. They need a lot of work on defense and special teams to be considered a good Fantasy option in 2010; intend to keep them off rosters at this point.
News: The Jaguars DST did nothing in the snow Sunday at Cleveland. The Jaguars had one interception, no fumble recoveries or forced fumbles and no sacks. Nate Hughes had one punt return for 7 yards and Mike Thomas had two kickoff returns for 40 yards to lead the Jaguars on special teams.
Analysis: The Jaguars need a lot of work on defense and special teams to be considered a good Fantasy option in 2010. Don't plan on drafting the Jaguars DST in any formats next year unless they make a lot of changes. At best, the Jaguars DST is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Jaguars DST did nothing Sunday at New England. The Jaguars had one fumble recovery in a 35-7 loss with no sacks. Mike Thomas had three kickoff returns for 76 yards, and Maurice Jones-Drew had two kickoff returns for 43 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is a low-end Fantasy option, but they might be worth using in Week 17 at Cleveland. Consider the Jaguars a sleeper option in the season finale.
News: The Jaguars didn't have a noteworthy defensive performance against the Colts in Week 15. They allowed 35 points on 369 yards, recording just one interception and no sacks.
Analysis: The Jaguars have had a weak season defensively, leaving the Jaguars DST without many Fantasy points. It has only once recorded three sacks in a game and only once recorded three interceptions in a game. Facing one of the most prolific offenses in the game Week 16 at New England, it should obviously remain on waivers in Fantasy.
News: The Jaguars DST allowed 354 yards and 14 points to the Dolphins in a Week 14 loss, but did manage to recover two fumbles, grab one interception and tally two sacks.
Analysis: The Jags DST has played pretty well in the last couple of weeks, but they'll face the vaunted Colts in Week 15. However, Indy might rest some players as they have sewn up home field advantage. We still wouldn't suggest risking the Jaguars, though.
News: The Jaguars DST played well Sunday against Houston with three interceptions and two sacks in a 23-18 victory. Justin Durant had an interception and a sack, Derrick Harvey had a sack, Anthony Smith had four tackles and an interception, Gerald Alexander had two tackles and an interception. On special teams, Mike Thomas had two punt returns for 12 yards and three kickoff returns for 60 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is a low-end Fantasy option. Don't plan on using them in Week 14 against Miami.
News: The Jaguars defense failed to create any big plays on Sunday in a Week 12 loss at San Francisco, losing by a score of 20-3. The Jaguars defense allowed Niners QB Alex Smith to throw for 232 yards on 27 for 41 passing. However, the defense was solid against the run, allowing only 52 yards on 20 rushing attempts.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense wasnt terrible against San Francisco, but they didnt exactly make any big plays as they failed to force a fumble, intercept a pass or sack QB Alex Smith. Last week against Buffalo, the defense forced three turnovers. The Jaguars defense faces a potent offense in Week 13 against Houston. In Week 3 at Houston, the defense gave up 24 points. The Jaguars DST is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 13.
News: Jacksonville came from behind late in the Week 11 game against Buffalo to win, 18-15. The Jaguars DST gave up 343 yards to the Bills in the game and could not stop Terrell Owens in the passing game. That said, they still found a way to win the game. The Jaguars managed two sacks, both coming from John Henderson, and forced three turnovers. The Jaguars picked off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick twice in the game and forced another fumble.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST unit isn't a recommended start in most weeks and they might have trouble stopping the 49ers in Week 12 at San Francisco. The Jaguars DST only has low-end Fantasy appeal in Week 12.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars insist they have several options to replace injured cornerback Rashean Mathis. Safety Reggie Nelson might be the top choice, even after his performance at Tennessee earlier in November. Nelson, starting at cornerback for the first time in his career, missed several tackles and got beat for a touchdown in a 30-13 loss to the Titans. But the Jaguars (5-4) haven't lost confidence in the former Florida star and first-round draft pick in 2007. "I get a sense that Reggie Nelson is a proud guy who's working hard, wants to be better and the only issues he had were tackling," coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday. "I think he's tackled better the last two weeks and we're going to continue to grow there." The Jaguars officially ruled Mathis out for Sunday's game against Buffalo (3-6). The team's top defensive back injured his groin in last week's 24-22 victory at the New York Jets and probably will miss the next two games, maybe more. "It could be a little while," Del Rio said. "He'll be out this week for sure. With Rashean, he's proven over time to kind of beat the prognosis. Some guys just heal quickly, and Rashean's been that kind of guy for us."
Analysis: Del Rio refused to announce who would start in his place against the Bills, who are trying to regroup after consecutive losses, sideline bickering and the firing of coach Dick Jauron. Jacksonville could go with second-year cornerback Tyron Brackenridge, rookie William Middleton or kick returner Brian Witherspoon. But since those three have one career start between them, the Jaguars are likely to turn to Nelson again. Nelson has 198 tackles and seven interceptions in three seasons since Jacksonville selected him with the 21st overall pick. He was one of the team's top rookies in 2007, finishing with 82 tackles, 12 passes defended, five interceptions and a sack. But he struggled last season. Nelson stopped short of saying he would like a chance to redeem himself. But teammates and coaches say he's a prideful player who would love another opportunity to show his versatility and coverage skills. Even with Mathis, the Jaguars were susceptible against the pass. Thanks mostly to a league-low eight sacks, they rank 25th in pass defense and have allowed 16 touchdowns through the air. It could get worse without Mathis, who is a viable Fantasy DB when healthy. Nelson is merely a stopgap option in deeper IDP leagues. The Jaguars DST has low-end appeal against the Bills.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars are hoping their next game without cornerback Rashean Mathis goes better than their previous one. Coach Jack Del Rio says Mathis likely won't play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills after injuring his groin in a 24-22 victory at the New York Jets. Mathis sat out Jacksonville's game at Tennessee earlier this month because of a broken index finger on his left hand. Safety Reggie Nelson started in his place, missed several tackles and got beat for a touchdown in a 30-13 loss. Del Rio declined to say who would start if Mathis can't play. Del Rio says his injury "doesn't look like it will be great for the next week or two." Mathis underwent tests Monday to determine the severity of his injury.
Analysis: Mathis remains just a low-end Fantasy option in IDP leagues heading into Week 11 vs. Buffalo, if he can play. He is definitely worth more to the Jaguars DST than he is to Fantasy owners in IDP leagues. The Jaguars DST has low-end appeal against the Bills.
News: The Jaguars DST allowed 22 points and 322 yards to the Jets in a Week 10 victory, but made two interceptions and a fumble. They failed to record a sack, however.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST unit isn't a recommended start in most weeks, but they have a very nice matchup in Week 11 against the Bills. Owners in deeper leagues should think about using them if their No. 1 unit has a difficult opponent.
News: The Jaguars allowed 301 total net yards of offense in Week 9 against Kansas City. They gave up 21 points and recorded three sacks without forcing a turnover.
Analysis: The Jaguars held the Chiefs down for three-plus quarters, but a late rally by the Chiefs cut the team's lead to three points and put up what would amount to be garbage stats on the board. The Jaguars defensive unit remains a low-end option to be used mainly just as a bye week replacement or based on matchups. They'll face the Jets on the road in Week 10.
News: Two days after ripping his team's defensive effort, coach Jack Del Rio had the Jacksonville Jaguars in full pads in practice. He was so upset about missed tackles that he considered having live tackling drills this week. He reconsidered, but only because he was fearful of injury. The Jaguars gave up a franchise-record 305 yards rushing at Tennessee in a 30-13 loss Sunday. Del Rio called the defensive effort insulting, ugly and embarrassing.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense actually has a decent matchup in Week 9 vs. the Chiefs, who will be playing without Larry Johnson and with a banged-up offensive line. If you're stressing for a DST in Week 9, consider the Jaguars, who obviously will be under fire after what coach Del Rio did this week.
News:Vince Young threw for a touchdown in his first start since the 2008 season opener, Chris Johnson set a franchise record by rushing for 228 yards, and the Tennessee Titans won their first game of the season by routing the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-13 in Week 8. The Jaguars defense forced no turnovers and were unable to sack Young all game. Tennessee rolled up 430 yards on the Jaguars and avenged a Week 4 loss to Jacksonville.
Analysis: Young didn't have a great game, passing for just 125 yards, but while Jacksonville focused on the quarterback they forgot about Tennessee's talented running back. Johnson averaged 9.5 yards per carry in Week 8 and nearly had a first down every time he touched the football. It has been a rocky season for Jacksonville and it won't get any easier the rest of the way. The Jaguars DST has little Fantasy value heading into Week 9 against the Chiefs despite the favorable matchup.
News: Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis won't play Sunday at Tennessee because of a broken finger. He was ruled out Friday by coach Jack Del Rio. The news wasn't a surprise because Mathis didn't practice all week and was in a cast. He had surgery last week to insert a screw in his finger and never sounded optimistic he would return against the Titans. The Jaguars will start either Scott Starks or Tyrone Brackenridge opposite rookie Derek Cox.
Analysis: Mathis is pretty much the Jaguars' best defensive back, and without him teams will look to take advantage of the poor Jacksonville secondary. Even with the 0-6 Titans coming to town in Week 8, consider the Jags DST no better than a low-end No. 1 option. They're only useful because Vince Young is starting for the Titans.
News:Rashean Mathis, Jacksonville's best defensive back, has a broken index finger on his left hand and could miss Sunday's game at Tennessee. Wearing a pink and black cast, Mathis said Tuesday he still has a screw in his finger and several stitches. Although they will be removed later this week, he doesn't expect to practice and isn't sure whether he will play in Week 8. "I don't know how it's going to do yet," said Mathis, who has 18 tackles and two interceptions this season. "It's still questionable. I'm going to see. Hopefully I can go."
Analysis: Mathis is pretty much the Jagaurs' best defensive back, and without him teams will look to take advantage of the poor Jacksonville secondary. Even with the 0-6 Titans coming to town in Week 8, consider the Jags DST no better than a low-end No. 1 option.
News: Coach Jack Del Rio says CB Rashean Mathis suffered a finger injury that "has potential for issues" and might need surgery. The injury is to his left index finger but "won't be season ending," according to Del Rio. Mathis bypassed reporters as he scurried through the locker room with his hand wrapped on Monday.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is on bye in Week 7 but will play at Tennessee in Week 8. By then, they might be useful as a one-week replacement DST if Vince Young is under center, but the Jags' secondary will be picked apart in the coming weeks.
News: The Jaguars DST had a decent game on Sunday in the team's 23-20 Week 6 win over the Rams. The defense held the Rams to only 55 yards rushing on 18 attempts and no touchdowns. Marc Bulger had a bit more success against the Jaguars secondary, completing 22 of his 34 passes with a touchdown and an interception. Only 13 of the Rams' 20 points in the game were scored by the offense as the other TD came on an interception return.
Analysis: The Jaguars were destroyed in Week 5 by the Seahawks' aerial attack but had a much easier time with the Rams tepid offense in Week 6. The Jags are on a bye in Week 7 then face the Titans in Week 8.
News: The Jaguars defense was picked apart by Matt Hasselbeck Week 5 in a 41-0 loss to the Seahawks. Hasselbeck went 18 for 30 against the Jags with four touchdown passes, two to Nate Burleson and two to T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The Seahawks' other TD came via their defense. In total, the Jaguars defense allowed 240 yards through the air and 143 yards on the ground. The unit also failed to create a turnover in the contest.
Analysis: The Jaguars were not a suggested Fantasy option to begin with Week 5 and their performance certainly left much to be desired. They do have a favorable matchup Week 6 against an inept Rams offense but still are not recommended as anything more than a bye-week replacement.
News: The Jaguars DST gave up 19 points and 379 yards to the Titans in a Week 4 victory. They did manage to pick off Kerry Collins twice and recover a forced fumble, however.
Analysis: The Jags have had some mixed outings this season, but have done just enough to help the team win the last couple of games. In Week 5, they have a good matchup against the Seahawks, however the game is on the road. You're better off staying away from the Jags for now until they put together a couple of good performances against decent teams.
News: Houston QB Matt Schaub scored three touchdowns on Sunday in a Week 3 game against the Jaguars. Schaub scored three first half touchdowns through the air and threw for a total of 300 yards. The Jaguars defense allowed 111 rushing yards total, with Steve Slaton accounting for 76 of them. The Jags intercepted a pass and sacked Schaub two times.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense is not nearly as vaunted as it once was as they continue to allow plenty of yards and points. They go up against the Titans Week 4, which is a pretty good matchup for the Jaguars, but they still won't be a recommended Fantasy option.
News: The Jaguars could do little to stop Kurt Warner and the Cardinals' offense Week 2 in a loss to Arizona at home. Arizona racked up 383 yards of offense against them and won the game 31-17 going away. The Jaguars DST could not sack Warner, nor could they intercept the veteran signal caller. They did, however, force five fumbles, two of which were recovered.
Analysis: Jacksonville hasn't looked like the defense of old this season and a solid passing offense in Arizona got open all over the field. They couldn't get to Warner and were overall just a very mediocre unit Week 2. Jacksonville plays at Houston in Week 3 and the Texans' passing offense just woke up. We would not use them in Week 3.
News: The Jaguars DST held the Colts to just 14 points in a Week 1 loss Sunday, even though Indy managed 365 yards of offense. Jacksonville intercepted Peyton Manning once, recovered a fumble and made one sack.
Analysis: The Jacksonville defense wasn't a recommended option in Week 1, but they did a pretty good job against the high-powered Colts. In Week 2, Jacksonville will host Arizona, another team with a decent air game. Only contemplate using them in the deepest of Fantasy leagues with that below-average matchup.
News: All three Jaguars starting linebackers - Daryl Smith (coach's decision), Clint Ingram (concussion) and Justin Durant (hip flexor) - missed practice for the second straight day Tuesday and aren't expected to suit up against the Eagles for Thursday's preseason game.
Analysis: Durant has the most value of the trio, but this injury is not a major concern. The Jaguars are just being cautious with their starting middle linebacker and Fantasy owners should continue to target him as a sleeper in the later rounds of IDP formats. We still don't see the Jaguars as anything better than a No. 2 DST this season.
News: Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson wants to make it clear: He's not faking an injury, he's committed to the Jacksonville Jaguars and eager to return to form. Henderson missed his third consecutive practice Thursday because of a dislocated shoulder, an injury coach Jack Del Rio questioned earlier in the week. Henderson insisted the injury is legit and said he and Del Rio worked out their differences in a private meeting. "I was a little upset, but we talked about it and everything is all right," Henderson said. "We talked like men. I let him know about the shoulder. He saw the X-rays. He was good on it. We're both good and we're getting back to work."
Analysis: Henderson should be fine. Henderson's play is a big key to how the Jaguars do on defense, so if he's not at 100 percent, the whole unit has to pick up the slack. We don't see the Jaguars as anything better than a No. 2 DST this season.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio was hoping to get more production from two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson this season. Already, he's disappointed. Henderson pulled himself out of drills Monday, and Del Rio expressed frustration with the 6-foot-7, 335-pound veteran. Del Rio said Henderson had a bruised shoulder, but questioned whether it was bad enough to keep him out of organized team activities. "Back when I played, and even prior to that, I don't think anybody would have had to miss a snap for it," Del Rio said. "I think it's a minor bruise of sorts. I would think Vince Lombardi is probably rolling over right now. It's not something that should keep anybody out of work. But John feels like he can't go, so we'll let him wait until he can."
Analysis: Henderson, who spent Tuesday's practice running and working out on the side, had 53 tackles and two sacks last season. It was one of the worst seasons in his seven-year career. Henderson's play is a big key to how the Jaguars do on defense, so if he's not at 100 percent, the whole unit has to pick up the slack. We don't see the Jaguars as anything better than a No. 2 DST this season.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports Jaguars DB Rashean Mathis suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament just before halftime in the 12th game of last season, at Houston, and missed the last four games. During non-contact drills without pads at the team's recent OTA workouts, Mathis showed no signs of being bothered by last season's injury. "I'm fully recovered," Mathis said. "I've been out there running full speed. All that is behind me. I don't even think about it. I'm not wearing a knee brace or anything."
Analysis: Mathis is a No. 2 DB in IDP leagues, and his presence will help the Jaguars DST remain a solid unit. The Jaguars DST should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option with upside.
News: Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio hired former Cleveland defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to replace Gregg Williams, who left after one season in what his agent called an "amicable divorce." Tucker spent the last four years with the Browns, serving three seasons as defensive backs coach and one as defensive coordinator. He also has eight years of college experience, including four at Ohio State.
Analysis: Tucker ran a 3-4 scheme in Cleveland under the tutelage of Romeo Crennel, but he'll likely convert to the Jaguars' 4-3 structure now. The Jaguars have some fundamental players in place like DT John Henderson and CB Rashean Mathis but have a lot of young talent -- FS Reggie Nelson, DE Derrick Harvey and OLB Quentin Groves, to name three -- that need to mature in order for this club to rebound. The Jaguars shouldn't be drafted in 2009 but would be a nice one-week replacement off the waiver wire when they have a safe matchup.
News: After leading 7-3 after the first quarter, Jacksonville crumbled during a 21-point second quarter and eventually lost 27-7 to the Ravens Week 17. Two LeRon McClain touchdowns and a Willis McGahee score in the second quarter snapped a strong performance by the Jaguars defense in the first half. Jacksonville allowed rookie quarterback Joe Flacco to pass for a career-high 297 yards and Baltimore rack up 431 yards. Jacksonville forced no turnovers while getting two sacks from Derrick Harvey and one from Jeremy Mincey -- both former Florida Gators.
Analysis: The Jaguars had a very bad season in 2008, but it wasn't entirely the defenses fault. They still were among the top 15 units for most of the season, but really struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard. Key injuries down the stretch played a part. Jacksonville is usually a solid Fantasy DST, so look to them as a possible low-end No. 1 Fantasy option in 2009.
News: Jacksonville did a good job stopping the Colts running game and took a solid 17-7 lead into the half. In the second half, however, the Jaguars DST could not stop Peyton Manning. Manning threw for 364 yards and the Colts totaled 396 yards in the 31-24 victory. Jacksonville could not force a single turnover against Indy and didn't sack Manning a single time.
Analysis: The Jaguars have been a hugely disappointing Fantasy unit this season and Thursday night put the icing on the cake. They were horrible and barely did anything Fantasy worthy at all. Playing at Baltimore in Week 17, we cannot recommend the Jaguars DST.
News: The Jaguars DST held Green Bay to 338 yards and 16 points in a Week 15 win over the Packers. They forced one interception and sacked Aaron Rodgers three times.
Analysis: The Jaguars have been a hugely disappointing Fantasy unit this season, so Sunday's half-decent outing was a pleasant surprise. However, don't get too excited as Jacksonville visits Indianapolis in Week 16. You should stay away from the Jags with that matchup, if you can.
News: The Jaguars DST had one sack and an interception Sunday at Chicago. John Henderson had the sack, and Gerald Sensabaugh had the interception. Maurice Jones-Drew had two kickoff returns for 50 yards, and Brian Witherspoon had four kickoff returns for 103.2 yards and two punt returns for 2 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been inconsistent this season and is not worth using in Week 15 against Green Bay.
News: The Jaguars DST had one sack and an interception Sunday at Chicago. John Henderson had the sack, and Gene Sensabaugh had the interception.
News: Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis, who leads the team with four interceptions, sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee Monday night at Houston and will likely go on injured reserve, ending his season. Mathis, a Pro Bowl selection in 2006 and the first alternate last year, has 33 tackles and one sack this season. "It's not going to require surgery, but they need to let it heal properly," coach Jack Del Rio said on Wednesday. "He'll be immobilized for a couple of weeks, and by the time they get him going again, we're going to run out of time. So he'll not be available the rest of the season." With Mathis out, veteran Drayton Florence will move back into the starting lineup.
Analysis: Florence, one of the team's top offseason acquisitions, started the first four games but struggled in zone coverage schemes. The Jaguars moved Brian Williams back to cornerback, inserted Gerald Sensabaugh at safety and relegated Florence to nickel and dime situations. As they stand now, Jacksonville's defense is going to struggle and the team has little motivation to play well down the stretch. Consider them no better than a low-end option for Week 14 at Chicago, where they could get run over by Matt Forte. Check for better options on your waiver wire, including the Colts DST.
News: Against the hosting Texans in Week 13, the Jaguars allowed 30 points on 326 yards, getting an interception from Rashean Mathis. They went without a sack for the first time in six games.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has had a disappointing season, struggling especially against the run. The Jaguars visit the Bears in Week 14, but that matchup doesn't look enticing enough to make their DST more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Jaguars DST held the Vikings to 226 yards and recorded a safety, but gave up 30 points in a loss to the Vikings in Week 12. They added two sacks and an interception.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has been one of the more disappointing units this season and their outing in Week 12 was just as odd as their whole year. In Week 13, the Jaguars play at Houston, and they remain a low-end flier Fantasy DST option if you have no other options as their matchup is pretty favorable.
News: The Jaguars defense didn't look particularly impressive Week 11 against the Titans, allowing 24 points on 344 yards. It recorded one sack and one interception.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST just came off a seven-sack performance against the Lions, but it has mostly disappointed this season. It has a decent matchup Week 12 against the Vikings, but it's by no means a must-start if you think you can do better.
News: The Jaguars DST held Detroit to 14 points and 256 yards in a Week 10 win over the Lions. They also racked up seven sacks and an interception.
Analysis: Even without stud LB Mike Peterson and DL John Henderson, the Jaguars took care of business in a big way in Week 10. When any team is taking on the Lions, they are basically a must-start option in Fantasy play. Things will get a little more difficult for Jacksonville in Week 11 when they host the Titans, but they will remain a viable Fantasy option.
News: The official team Web site reports that Jaguars LB Mike Peterson is back at practice on Friday. He was previously sent home from practice for his remarks about the team following the loss at Cincinnati last week. No details have been given as to whether or not Peterson will play at Detroit in Week 10.
Analysis: Peterson is only part of the problem the Jaguars have on defense. They have a nice-looking matchup against the Lions in Week 10, especially if Daunte Culpepper is under center for the Lions, which is expected to be the case. Look for a bounce-back game for this defense, thus usable as a starting option this week. Anything after this week though is uncertain as they haven't been a great DST for much of the season.
News: Jacksonville LB Mike Peterson was sent home again Thursday and probably will be benched or suspended for this weekend's game at Detroit. Coach Jack Del Rio was still deciding how to punish the Jaguars' captain, who was asked to leave Wednesday after a confrontation with the coach during a team meeting Wednesday. According to teammates, Del Rio called out Peterson for his muscle-flexing celebration following a shoestring sack at Cincinnati on Sunday. Del Rio was upset that Peterson was reveling a play in a game the Jaguars trailed 21-3. Peterson defended himself in the meeting, saying he was trying to give the team a spark in the game, but Del Rio didn't want to hear any excuses. The coach had even told players before he singled a few out that he didn't want to hear a word from anyone.
Analysis: Keep Peterson reserved for Week 10 unless he's cleared to play. When active, Peterson is a No. 3 Fantasy LB.
News: The Jaguars DST allowed 21 points and 312 yards to the Bengals in Week 9, but did manage to score a touchdown when they returned a fumble on a kickoff return to the house. They also had two sacks and an interception.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has had a disappointing season and have yet to have one big week. In Week 9 though, the Jags have a chance to really rack up the points when they take on the Lions. Consider them a decent low-end No. 1 Fantasy option with a tasty matchup like that and hope they can find the end zone again and force some turnovers.
News: The Jaguars defense held the Browns to two fourth quarter field goals in the second half Week 9, but it was too little, too late as Cleveland won 23-17. Jacksonville allowed 327 yards, including 236 through the air. They got just one sack and didn't record a turnover.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense has been really inconsistent in 2008. Some weeks they look like a premier defensive unit and then other weeks they look awful. They have the talent to be great, but are a week-to-week play in Fantasy until they find a middle ground. The Jaguars DST could be a viable start Week 9 against the Bengals, who are one of the weaker offensive teams in the NFL.
News: The Jaguars will return from their bye week to face the Browns in Week 8. The Browns have totaled the third fewest total yards per game in the NFL to date (255.5). The Browns are coming off a game in which they totaled just 236 yards and 11 points last week against Washington.
Analysis: On paper, this seems like a very favorable matchup. But the Browns offense remains a sleeping giant that can be awakened with all the weapons they have on offense. One of those weapons, Kellen Winslow, will be suspended for this game and that helps. Consider the Jaguars defense a good start at home this week in most Fantasy formats and hope the Browns offense stays dormant.
News: Playing their best all-around game of the season, the Jaguars got superb performances from quarterback David Garrard and running back Maurice Jones-Drew, plus three takeaways by their defense in a 24-17 win over the bumbling Broncos on a cold, misty Sunday. The Jaguars had an interception of Jay Cutler and recovered two fumbles in the win. They held Denver to 323 yards and two offensive touchdowns. But they didn't sack Cutler once.
Analysis: The Jaguars continue to be banged up on defense and this seems to be a reoccuring trend on a yearly basis. But they usually have enough depth to make up for it. Jacksonville is one of the better defensive teams in football and the Jaguars DST is a viable Fantasy option. Jacksonville doesn't play again until Week 8 against the Browns.
News: One week after allowing 27 points to the Texans, the Jaguars defense allowed 26 points to the visiting Steelers in Week 5. Even worse, it gave up 415 yards and recorded only three sacks and one interception. Fortunately, that interception went for a touchdown on a return by Rashean Mathis in the first quarter.
Analysis: That touchdown salvaged an otherwise dismal performance by the Jaguars DST, which no longer looks like one of the elite units in Fantasy. It just gives up too many yards on the ground. Traveling to Denver in Week 6, the Jaguars DST doesn't deserve to start in standard Fantasy leagues.
News: The Jaguars will be without half their starting secondary against Pittsburgh on Sunday night. S Reggie Nelson (knee) and CB Drayton Florence (groin) will miss the game, coach Jack Del Rio said Friday. Nelson bruised a knee two weeks ago at Indianapolis when he collided with teammate Brian Williams and sat out last week's game against Houston. Florence strained his groin on the final series against the Texans. Both players missed practice all week. The Jaguars already were thin in the secondary: Top backup CB Scott Starks injured his right knee against the Colts and was placed on injured reserve. "You'd like to have your guys - we have three of our top six defensive backs out - but you have to go on," Del Rio said. CB Will James, beaten on long pass plays against the Colts and Texans, and S Gerald Sensabaugh are expected to start against the Steelers.
Analysis: Keep Nelson and Florence out against the Steelers in IDP leagues. The Jaguars DST is still a good option against a banged-up Steelers offense.
News: The Jaguars allowed 27 points and 386 yards of total offense in Week 4 vs. Houston. They did not force a turnover and did not have a sack in the game.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense had a sub-par game against a middle-of-the-road offense in Week 4 and they simply could not get off the field for most of the game. The Texans held the ball for over 32 minutes and did not let the Jags breathe much. In Week 5 against the Steelers, Jacksonville could be in for more of the same. They are starting to feel the injury bug, playing without Reggie Nelson and Kevin Durant. Rashean Mathis was also hurt in this game. They are still an above-average Fantasy defense, but aren't a lock to start every week.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars likely will be without safety Reggie Nelson and linebacker Justin Durant for Sunday's game against Houston. Nelson, who injured a knee in last week's game against Indianapolis when he collided with teammate Brian Williams, was ruled out Friday. Durant, who pulled a groin muscle two weeks ago against Buffalo and missed last week's game, was listed as doubtful.
Analysis: The Jaguars could really use Nelson and Durant against Houston. The Texans haven't been great on offense in 2008, but they have something to prove and will be extremely motivated against Jacksonville. The Jaguars DST is still a viable Fantasy option because six teams are on byes. Just keep expectations in check since Jacksonville could be without two starters.
News: The Jaguars traveled to Indianapolis in Week 3 and allowed 21 points and 325 yards of total offense in a 23-21 win. They intercepted Peyton Manning twice and sacked him once.
Analysis: The Jaguars have been at or around these numbers for the most part in the three games they've played so far. Regardless of their opponent, Fantasy owners can expect more or less the same. If this suits your Fantasy format, use them in Week 4 against Houston's mediocre offense.
News: The Jaguars allowed 285 yards of offense and 20 points in Week 2 against Buffalo. They recovered one fumble and sacked QB Trent Edwards three times.
Analysis: The Jaguars allowed slightly less yards than they did in Week 1 when they gave up 309 yards to the Titans, but gave up slightly more points than the 17 they gave up last week. This may be the neighborhood they'll find themselves in against average NFL offenses. In Week 3, they'll travel to Indianapolis for a tough matchup. They could still be considered a top-10 defensive unit, but aren't playing like a must-start group by any means.
News: The Jaguars allowed 17 points and 309 yards of total offense in Week 1 at Tennessee. They intercepted two passes, but did not record a sack in the game.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense frustrated quarterback Vince Young all game, but they didn't put up many significant stats. We expect more from a top flight defensive unit in Fantasy. They'll likely get a boost from their home crowd in Week 2 when they host Buffalo. They should still be considered a top-10 defensive unit as they don't give up a lot of points and usually get their fair share of sacks and turnovers.
News: DE Derrick Harvey ended a 33-day holdout Wednesday by signing a five-year, $23.8 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Harvey was the last first-round draft pick to sign, a lengthy holdout that frustrated coach Jack Del Rio and left the former Florida standout behind in drills heading into the regular season. The eighth overall selection in April, Harvey was expected to bolster a pass rush that struggled to pressure quarterbacks last season. But he missed all of training camp and the first three preseason games. It was unclear whether Harvey would play in the preseason finale Thursday night at Washington. He was driving from Gainesville to Jacksonville in hopes of traveling with the team to Washington later Wednesday. Harvey's deal included a little more than $17 million guaranteed and could pay him as much as $33.4 million with incentives and escalators.
Analysis: Harvey had 20.5 career sacks with the Gators and was the defensive most valuable player of the 2007 BCS national title game against Ohio State. The Jaguars liked - and needed - Harvey so much that they traded up 18 spots to get him. They may not have expected him to be so expensive, however. For now, consider Harvey a low-end No. 3 DL in IDP leagues, and his signing will help the Jaguars DST, which is hurting at DE. James Wyche (Achilles' tendon) is out for the season. Jeremy Mincey (wrist) has missed the entire preseason. Starter Reggie Hayward is still recovering from a hamstring injury. And second-round pick Quentin Groves has looked every bit like a rookie in the last two preseason games.
News: In their third preseason game at Tampa Bay, the Jaguars DST totaled two sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Free safety Reggie Nelson had two of the three INTs. The Jags have seven sacks and five interceptions thus far in the preseason.
Analysis: Aside from first-round pick Derrick Harvey continuing to holdout, the Jaguars DST is shaping up to be a nice unit to rely on this season. It hurts them that they play in the AFC South, but they've come up with some big efforts against the Titans, Texans and Colts in the past. They're a Top-10 option worth a late-round pick.
News: Saddled with the NFL's only unsigned first-round pick and a flood of injuries, the Jacksonville Jaguars seem to have a problem at defensive end. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Monday the position is a work in progress, but he doesn't consider defensive end a major issue, even though first-round pick Derrick Harvey from Florida remains out of camp. "No, it's not desperate," Del Rio said. "The guys who are here are working hard and doing a good job. We're just going to work the guys who are here. We'll plug in the guys that we have available and keep rolling." Starter Reggie Hayward has a hamstring injury. For the second straight year, James Wyche (torn Achilles') is out for the season and Jeremy Mincey has missed all of camp with a wrist injury. The other starter, Paul Spicer, second-round pick Quentin Groves, rookie Alex Boston and third-year player Kenny Pettway are healthy and playing. Pettway had his first career start against the Falcons and responded with three tackles. "We have a history around here that when things come up we don't blink," Del Rio said. "We fill the holes and move forward. That's what we'll continue to do."
Analysis: Harvey's holdout hit its 17th day Monday. His agent, Ken Kremer, and the Jaguars spoke during the weekend for the first time in more than a week. In response to the holdout and injuries, the Jaguars signed Mkristo Bruce at the start of camp and Saturday signed veteran Bo Schobel to replace Wyche. Del Rio was particularly encouraged by the play of Groves and Bruce against Atlanta. Groves had three tackles, an assist and a half sack and included in his night was a one-armed tackle of Falcons running back Jerious Norwood. "I like what I'm seeing," Del Rio said of Groves, the 52nd overall pick from Auburn. "He does some things naturally that you can't coach, and he is willing to do some of the dirty work it takes to have an impact on the team." The Jaguars have had problems with injuries on defense the last few seasons, but always seem to get through the hard times. Continue to treat the Jaguars DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis didn't practice during Saturday's morning session after suffering a sprained right knee the previous day, reports the Florida Times-Union. It's unclear how long Mathis will be out, but the injury isn't considered serious, according to team officials.
Analysis: Mathis will likely be fine for training camp. Go into 2008 with Mathis as a low-end No. 1 DB in IDP leagues. He is an elite cornerback and one of the reasons for the success of the Jaguars defense.
News: With the No. 8 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Florida DE Derrick Harvey, acquiring the pick in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. Harvey is one of the most pure 4-3 pass rushers in the draft and should fit in right away in that dominant defense in Jacksonville.
Analysis: This is probably one of the best possible landing spots for Harvey, who now has 10-sack potential rushing off the edge with the talented defensive tackles and other defenders in Jacksonville. The Jaguars remain a very good No. 1 Fantasy DST for owners to consider in 2008, especially now that they just added so many sacks to their bottom line.
News: Fired in Buffalo and passed over in Washington, Gregg Williams is headed to Jacksonville. Williams was hired as the team's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Wednesday, taking over a unit that struggled at times last year under Mike Smith. Williams spent the last four seasons as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator in Washington. During that span, the Redskins ranked sixth in the league in defense. "This is a very, very good team and a tremendous opportunity," said Williams.
Analysis: Williams' coaching and creative blitz schemes will only help the Jaguars' already-aggressive defense take the next step. The Jaguars DST was solid in 2007 with 20 interceptions, 37 sacks, nine fumble recoveries and 15 forced fumbles. Consider the unit a No. 1 option in all leagues this summer.
News: The Jaguars DST was solid in 2007 with 20 interceptions, 37 sacks, nine fumble recoveries and 15 forced fumbles. The unit fought through injuries to Marcus Stroud and Mike Peterson and got solid contributions from several newcomers, notably veteran safety Sammy Knight and rookie Reggie Nelson. On special teams, Maurice Jones-Drew averaged 26.2 yards on 31 kickoffs with one touchdown, and Dennis Northcutt had 26 punt returns for a 9.2-yard average.
Analysis: The Jaguars will need to keep Knight and Bobby McCray, who are free agents, and hope Peterson and Stroud can stay healthy to remain dominant in 2008. Consider the unit a No. 1 option in all leagues, and the ST unit is still strong with Jones-Drew.
News: In a Wild Card game at Pittsburgh on Saturday, the Jaguars defense recorded six sacks of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. It also had three interceptions, including two for Rashean Mathis -- one that he returned for a touchdown -- and recovered a fumble. It allowed 29 points on 340 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST was an effective Fantasy option during the season, so expect more of the same in the playoffs. Its matchup for the next round remains unknown, but it'll have a fight on its hands at either Indianapolis or New England. Obviously, with the few available options in Fantasy, it deserves to start.
News: The Jaguars DST had one interception and one sack Sunday at Houston. Chad Owens had five kickoff returns for an 18.8-yard average.
Analysis: Despite the poor performance against the Texans, the Jaguars DST is worth starting in the first round of the playoffs for Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: The Jaguars DST totaled four sacks, three interceptions and a forced fumble and recovery vs. Oakland in Week 16. They also held the Raiders to three points until the Raiders scored and converted a two pointer in the waning seconds.
Analysis: Jacksonville's key defensive players might take a rest in Week 17 at Houston, making the Jaguars DST not the stud option you'd expect against the Texans. Houston will be looking to win to finish 8-8. The Jaguars DST is no better than a low-end No. 1 option in Week 17.
News: The Jaguars DST had five sacks Sunday at Pittsburgh but no turnovers. Maurice Jones-Drew had two kickoff returns for 37 yards and Dennis Northcutt had four punt returns for 15.2 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST should bounce back in Week 16 against the Raiders. Consider them a solid start.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars placed three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud on injured reserve Wednesday, three days after he reinjured his surgically repaired right ankle. Stroud hurt his ankle Sunday when teammate John Henderson fell on him during the first play of the third quarter against Carolina. Stroud sustained a deep bone bruise, a similar injury that hobbled him late last season. He eventually had offseason microfracture surgery. Stroud acknowledged he took supplements to help recover from the operation and later tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended. Coach Jack Del Rio said Stroud will be sidelined at least six weeks, too long for the Jaguars to consider keeping him on the active roster. "It's a shame to lose him, but that's the situation," Del Rio said. "Like we've done all year when we lose people, we'll do the best we can to have other people step up, step in and play well, and we expect to continue to play good football."
Analysis: Don't be surprised if the Jaguars' run defense slips a little bit, which happened before when Stroud was suspended. The enormous Grady Jackson will take his place. This does lower the value of the Jaguars DST a smidge. Think twice about starting them at Pittsburgh in Week 15.
News: The Jaguars held the Panthers to just six points and 149 yards of total offense in Week 14 vs. Carolina. They forced two turnovers and sacked the quarterback once.
Analysis: The Jaguars took full-advantage of their great matchup against a poor Panthers offense and Fantasy owners who played their cards with Jacksonville benefited. In Week 15, the Jags have a tougher matchup vs. Pittsburgh. Consider them in deeper leagues only.
News: The Jaguars DST will face their expansion counterparts, the Carolina Panthers in Jacksonville in Week 14. The Panthers have the 27th-rated offense.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST ranks 22nd in total defense, including 27th against the pass and eighth against the run. The Panthers have trouble at QB and their running game isn't that special anymore either. Start the Jaguars DST in all Fantasy formats.
News: Playing at Indianapolis in Week 13, the Jaguars DST could only muster up a sack and an interception. Peyton Manning threw for 288 yards while the Colts could only muster up 63 rush yards.
Analysis: Jacksonville's DST should be far more attractive against the Panthers in Week 14. Start them as a No. 1 unit in that game.
News: The Jaguars DST will travel to Indianapolis to face QB Peyton Manning and the Colts' offense. The Colts rank fourth in total offense, including ninth in the air and on the ground.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST likely won't get too many sacks against the Colts. We still recommend starting this DST because they play well against Manning, who has struggled recently.
News: The Jaguars DST held Buffalo to 14 points and 297 yards, picked off J.P. Losman twice and added a sack and a fumble recovery in Jacksonville's 36-14 win over the Bills in Week 12.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is a concrete No. 1 unit in the league, but you might want to find another option in Week 13 as they play at Indianapolis.
News: The Jaguars DST will host the Buffalo Bills, who are coming off an embarrassing game in which the Patriots dismantled them in every phase. The Bills offense ranks 31st in the NFL.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST ranks seventh in total defense, so this is a solid start for this Fantasy unit. We rank them the fifth-best matchup in our weekly rankings.
News: The Jaguars DST had no sacks or fumbles Sunday against Jacksonville but did get two interceptions against Philip Rivers by Reggie Nelson and Sammy Knight. Maurice Jones-Drew had four kickoff returns for a 17.8-yard average, and Dennis Northcutt had two punt returns for 38 yards. The Jaguars DST did suffer a tough break when LB Mike Peterson left the game with a broken hand. He is out indefinitely.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST should be considered a solid start for Week 12 against Buffalo. Start the unit in all leagues even without Peterson.
News: Jacksonville hosts San Diego's 10-ranked offense Sunday in Week 11. The Chargers are 25th in the passing game, but 16th on the ground thanks to LaDainian Tomlinson's legs.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST ranks 23rd overall (27th against the pass and 15th against the run). This is a tough matchup, but we still recommend using this unit in leagues with more than 12 teams.
News: The Jaguars allowed 13 points and 292 yards of offense in Week 10 at Tennessee. They forced three turnovers -- two interceptions and a fumble -- and had four sacks.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense held a pretty good offense to just 13 points and they looked good on the road after getting torched by the Saints in Week 9. In Week 11 vs. San Diego, they'll face an erratic offense and will be a hit-or-miss Fantasy defense as a result.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars have broken four franchise records this season, none of them good. They have set single-game marks for rushing yards allowed, passing yards allowed, total yards allowed and first downs allowed -- far from normal for a defense that has been one of the league's best the last four years. The Jaguars (5-3) rank 24th in the NFL in total defense, the result of an inconsistent pass rush and a struggling secondary. Coach Jack Del Rio vowed to get it turned around, beginning Week 10 at Tennessee (6-2). "It can happen in this league," Del Rio said Wednesday. "We're not alone. If you're not on top of your game, if you're not taking care of the details of your assignment, there are talented people over there that can put a hurt on you."
Analysis: Jacksonville gave up a record 282 yards rushing in the season opener against the Titans. The Jags rebounded and played considerably better in wins against Atlanta, Denver and Kansas City. But the defense has taken a step back since, giving up 424 yards a game the last four weeks. It culminated with Week 9's 41-24 loss at New Orleans. "We'll get back to work and we'll fix some of the things that we had an issue with and move forward," Del Rio said. It starts against the Titans and the Jaguars can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Jaguars allowed 538 yards of offense and 41 points in Week 9 at New Orleans. They had only one sack in the game and forced just a fumble in the game. KR Maurice Jones-Drew did return a kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown, though.
Analysis: The Jags were ripped apart by QB Drew Brees in the first half to the tune of over 350 yards. The kickoff return helped to offset some of the damage, but the Jags had little answer for the Saints pass game. They'll look to get back on the right track in Week 10 at Tennessee. For that matchup, consider the Jags a decent bye-week replacement option in Fantasy.
News: The Jaguars DST travels to New Orleans to face the Saints Sunday in Week 9. The Saints rank 12th in total offense, including eighth through the air and 23rd on the ground. They have allowed only four sacks all season.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is strong up the middle, especially on their defensive line, even though sacks will be tough to come by against the Saints. Jacksonville is ranked 15th in total defense, and we recommend starting them for this matchup on the road.
News: The Jaguars inked DT Grady Jackson to a one-year deal on Tuesday, solidifying their defensive line. Jackson was a surprise cut by the Falcons about a week earlier. To make room for him, the team put DL Tony McDaniel on injured reserve with a wrist injury. But the more surprising news is that the Florida Times-Union reports that DT Marcus Stroud will be suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, according to a source.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense is still in for a tough contest at New Orleans in Week 9; the Saints have rebounded since starting the year 0-4. Still, expect Jacksonville to record some sacks and takeaways, making them a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST. As for Stroud, at least he will be healthy when he comes back from the suspension later this year.
News: Bucs QB Jeff Garcia entered Week 8 against the Jaguars having not thrown a pick in the team's first seven games. Jacksonville made sure it didn't last eight games. The Jaguars came away with three interceptions, including one in which Aaron Glenn returned 28 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs did muster up 385 yards of offense and put 23 points on the board. Garcia was also sacked twice in the game.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense has been torched for 20-plus points in the last two weeks after not having that feat reached by the opposing team in the first five games. It could get rough for the Jaguars in Week 9 against the Saints, but the Jaguars DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Jaguars gave up 29 points on 384 yards to the visiting Colts in Week 7. Their defense recorded two sacks and had an interception. Their special teams gained 148 yards.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST entered Week 7 ranked eighth in total defense, allowing just 11.6 points per game. While this performance will likely drop that ranking some, the Jaguars DST remains one of the better, more consistent options in Fantasy. Shoot, any defense that doesn't get torched by the Colts deserves a commendation. Consider the Jaguars DST a great start for Week 8 at Tampa Bay.
News: The Jaguars DST will host Peyton Manning and his Indianapolis Colts Monday night in Week 7. The Colts offense ranks third overall, scoring 32.8 points per game, and they have the seventh-best passing attack and fifth-best running game. They do have some stars that are dealing with injuries (Marvin Harrison, Joseph Addai), but they remain a top offensive unit because of their depth.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is ranked eighth in total defense, and they have allowed just 11.6 points per game, which makes them a decent low-end starting option in this game since they are also at home.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars DST allowed 17 points and 390 total net yards in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. They were also allowed to rack up two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. LB Daryl Smith scooped up a 77-yard fumble return for a touchdown to give them a DTD.
Analysis: The Jaguars had a solid performance for their Fantasy owners once again, but they'll have their hands full with Indianapolis in Week 7. Use them only if you need a bye-week replacement, as facing QB Peyton Manning is never good for even a quality DST like the Jags.
News: The Houston Texans travel to face the Jaguars in Jacksonville in Week 6. The Texans rank 15th in total offense, including a seventh-ranked passing unit and a 25th ranked running game. They have allowed eight sacks with four interceptions thrown.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is ranked seventh in total defense. They are seventh against the pass and 15th against the run. This defensive unit has 13 sacks on the season, which is 10th in the NFL, and they have one of the toughest duos in the middle of their defensive front. They are a decent start against the Texans in Fantasy play.
News: The Jacksonville defense came up big against the error-prone Chiefs in Week 5. They totaled two sacks and an interception while holding the Chiefs scoreless until the last play of the game when Brodie Croyle's floater found Samie Parker in the back corner of the end zone. They held Larry Johnson to 15 total yards.
Analysis: Hopefully you get points for yardage allowed and points allowed, though the Jaguars not fighting hard for the shutout on the last play stinks. Nevertheless, they're a solid unit worthy of a start when they play vs. Houston in Week 6, especially if Houston is without Ahman Green and Andre Johnson.
News: The Jaguars DST ranks fourth in total defense so far this season (third against the pass and 26th against the run). They will travel to Kansas City to face a struggling Chiefs offense.
Analysis: With Larry Johnson getting more carries each week, the Chiefs should do better. But not good enough to keep you from starting the Jaguars DST in your Fantasy leagues for Week 5.
News: The Jaguars DST will be on a bye in Week 4, before playing at Kansas City in Week 5.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST has 10 sacks so far this season, along with two interceptions and four forced fumbles. They are a low-end starting option in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Jaguars allowed just 265 yards of total offense and 14 points in Week 3 at Denver. Sammy Knight had an interception and LB Brian Iwuh and DL Marcus Stroud both recovered fumbles. DL Reggie Hayward had their only sack of the game.
Analysis: The Jags defense continues to be one of the more underrated units in Fantasy football. In leagues that penalize yardage, they are an above-average unit. Consider using Knight and Hayward in larger IDP formats. Iwuh isn't worth owning at this time.
News: Jaguars DT John Henderson missed his third consecutive practice Friday and was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at Denver. Henderson, a two-time Pro Bowler who has not missed a game in his six-year career, suffered a concussion last week against Atlanta. He returned to the game later, then had to be helped to the locker room with what team officials called "heat-related issues." If Henderson does not play, backup Rob Meier likely will start alongside Marcus Stroud. The Jaguars have been banged up along the defensive line in recent weeks, with Stroud (ankle) and ends Paul Spicer (back) and Reggie Hayward (Achilles' tendon) still recovering from injuries. Jacksonville should have defensive tackle Tony McDaniel available for the first time this season. McDaniel sprained his left knee in the preseason and sat out the first two games. He returned to practice last week and was listed as probable Friday. Cornerback Brian Williams (ankle) also missed practice Friday but was listed as probable.
Analysis: The Jaguars defense has been surprisingly ineffective so far this season, ranking last in the NFL in run defense (they're the unit that allowed 175 rush yards to Chris Brown in Week 1). We wouldn't recommend them playing at Denver against a potent Broncos offense in Week 3 Fantasy action.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars placed safety Gerald Sensabaugh on injured reserve Wednesday due to a shoulder injury and re-signed safety Jamaal Fudge.
Analysis: Jamaal Fudge, who played in six games last season after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent, was waived in final roster cuts earlier this month. Fudge has no Fantasy appeal.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars defense piled on Atlanta Falcons QB Joey Harrington seven times in Week 2's 13-7 win. After allowing 204 yards in the first half, the Jags defense also stepped up with the game close and time winding down, limiting Harrington and the rest of the Falcons offense to 44 yards in the second half.
Analysis: After a so-so showing against the Titans in Week 1, the Jaguars defense reclaimed its Fantasy dominance in Week 2. Of course, it did so against the lowly Falcons, so don't expect seven sacks every week. The Jaguars DST makes a decent start in Week 3 at the Broncos, but consider playing your backup defense if it has a better matchup.
News: Don't get too depressed if you drafted the Jaguars DST hoping for a big year and were shocked by what happened in Week 1 against the Titans. Tennessee served as a wake-up call for Jacksonville, and the Falcons will pay for it. The Jaguars will harass Joey Harrington and will prove their worth this week.
Analysis: We have the Jaguars ranked as the fourth-best DST start this week, and they shouldn't have much of an issue containing the Falcons. They are a must-start.
News: The Jaguars defense held the Titans to 13 points and Vince Young to 100 total yards including passing yards. They also had two sacks, and interception and a forced fumble in Week 1 play. "I can definitely guarantee you one thing: you ain't going to see that again," Jags DE Paul Spicer said after the game. "You ain't going to see the defense play like that again. We pride ourselves in being one of the best, and today was one of the worst."
Analysis: The Jags DST hosts the Falcons in Week 2. Start salivating! The Falcons were hideous against the Vikings and yielded two defensive touchdowns. The Jaguars DST is a fantastic start in Week 2 Fantasy play.
News: The Jaguars signed 14-year veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn on Monday. Glenn spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before being released in final cuts on September 1. Glenn, 35, played in all 16 games for the Cowboys last season with one start and started their postseason contest against Seattle. The 5-foot-9, 183-pound cornerback recorded 20 tackles and one interception along with three kickoff returns for 24 yards. His interception extended his streak of 12 consecutive seasons with an interception which is tied for the NFL's longest active stretch along with Ty Law.
Analysis: Glenn will be a reserve DB for the Jaguars and is not worth drafting in any IDP leagues. He will add veteran depth to the DST, which is already one of the best in Fantasy play.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed linebacker Roy Manning off waivers Tuesday and released linebacker Chris Claiborne. Claiborne signed a one-year contract with the Jaguars on Sunday, but he ended up being more out of shape than the club anticipated.
Analysis: The Jaguars are a little thin at linebacker and Manning is clearly a better option than Claiborne, despite the former first-rounder's pedigree. He was in awful shape apparently. The Jaguars DST is a hot pick on Draft Day right now and should be viewed as a Top 10 option in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Jaguars defense registered one sack and two forced fumbles and recoveries vs. Tampa Bay in Jacksonville's second preseason game. On the injury front, rookie safety Reggie Nelson left the game with a sprained ankle; his replacement, Jamaal Fudge, had two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Not much else to report, other than they held the Bucs to 114 rush yards, with 37 of them coming from backup QB Luke McCown. New safety Sammy Knight played but didn't record a stat. The Jaguars DST remains a top-12 unit for Fantasy play.
News: The Jaguars signed free agent safety Sammy Knight on Monday, adding a veteran to the team's mix of young players at that position. The team also released safety Kevin McCadam. Knight started 16 games in each of the last eight seasons, playing with New Orleans, Miami and Kansas City. The Chiefs released him in March. Knight brings plenty of experience to Jacksonville, which replaced starters Deon Grant and Donovin Darius in the offseason. The Jaguars drafted safety Reggie Nelson with the 21st overall pick, and he has played well in training camp and the first preseason game. Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh has also been impressive.
Analysis: Knight will definitely help the Jaguars defense against the pass as he has consistently been both a hard-hitting safety and a ballhawk. The Jaguars DST remains a top-12 unit for Fantasy play.
News: Jaguars.com reports that the team has cut veteran strong safety Donovin Darius. Rookie Reggie Nelson is expected to compete for Darius' spot with Gerald Sensabaugh playing at free safety.
Analysis: Darius may have never recovered fully from a torn ACL suffered in 2005, especially considering his subpar stats in 10 games last year. The hard hitting safety should get some looks elsewhere. As for the Jaguars DST, they remain a top-12 unit despite the release of Darius.
News: Defensive end Bobby McCray re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday. McCray, a 2004 seventh-round draft pick from Florida, had previously refused to sign the one-year offer and had been skipping minicamp. Because McCray was not under contract, the team couldn't fine him. McCray is entering his fourth season with the Jaguars. McCray, 25, had 97 tackles in his career and had a career-high 10 sacks last season.
Analysis: McCray will keep the club's depth at DE very strong. The Jaguars DST remains a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Jaguars signed Panthers safety Kevin McCadam to a contract Monday and re-signed free agent linebacker Tony Gilbert. McCadam was a fifth-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft by Atlanta, out of Virginia Tech. He played in all 16 games for the Panthers in 2006 and ranked second on the team with 18 special teams tackles. McCadam has played 71 career games, starting six. He has 46 career special teams tackles along with 42 tackles, including 30 solo, one sack and a fumble recovery on defense. Gilbert played in all 16 games for the Jaguars last season for a third consecutive year. The 239-pound linebacker led the team for 16 special teams tackles and added 16 tackles, including 12 solo, one sack and one quarterback pressure on defense. The Jaguars also signed cornerback Ahmad Carroll and defensive end Kenny Pettway.
Analysis: Lots of decent depth here for the Jaguars defense. However, none of these players will impact the Jaguars defense to the point where they move from being a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for 2007.
News: Jaguars safety Gerald Sensabaugh was arrested early Monday morning and charged with speeding and carrying a firearm without a permit. Sensabaugh, 23, was pulled over after an officer spotted him driving 86 mph in a 55 mph zone. When asked if he had any weapons in the car, Sensabaugh told the officer he had a pistol, but did not have a permit to carry it. The officer found a loaded 9mm pistol in the console along with another fully loaded clip. Sensabaugh was booked into Kingsport City Jail on the charges, both misdemeanors, and was released about 2:30 a.m. after posting a $750 bond.
Analysis: Sensabaugh started several games towards the end of the 2006 season and was a potential starter heading into 2007. He will be subject to a suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy and may miss some playing time. The Jaguars DST is still a startable unit in 2007, but they're slipping into low-end territory and may even start the year as a No. 2 option.
News: The Jaguars gave up 395 total yards and 35 points, including three rushing touchdowns by Chiefs RB Larry Johnson, in a Week 17 loss to the Chiefs. The Jaguars did recover a fumble, as well as pick off two passes (DB Rashean Mathis and LB Daryl Smith). They also got sacks from Smith, DL Bobby McCray and LB Kenneth Pettway.
Analysis: The Jaguars remained a solid defense despite losing a ton of starters due to injury. They will be a popular draft pick in 2007 as a No. 1 Fantasy DST. Mathis remains a solid Fantasy DB and will be a high draft pick in IDP leagues next season. It is a little known fact that McCray had nine sacks on the season and that will garner him some recognition in IDP leagues in 2007.
News: In Week 16 vs. New England, the Jaguars defense had one sack. That's it. The Patriots put up 24 points on the Jags.
Analysis: The Jacksonville defense should be used at Kansas City in Week 17. They should do moderately well against Larry Johnson.
News: The Jaguars defense did its job against the Titans in Week 15, holding the Titans to 85 yards passing and 41 yards rushing and only three offensive points, though the Jags lost 24-17 due to three defensive TDs for Tennessee. The Jags defense added three sacks and a forced fumble.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense will truly be tested vs. New England in Week 16. You could start them so long as you don't have another option with a better matchup in the coming week.
News: The Jaguars DST got a 93-yard kickoff return from Maurice Jones-Drew against the Colts. LB Daryl Smith had eight tackles and a sack. DB Brian Williams had six tackles. DL Marcus Stroud had three tackles and a sack. DB Gerald Sensabaugh had two tackles and an interception. DL John Henderson had four tackles. DB Rashean Mathis had three tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Jaguars a No. 2 DST option against the Titans. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The Jaguars DST had two interceptions and four sacks against Miami. DB Rashean Mathis had five tackles and an interception. DB Gerald Sensabaugh had seven tackles and an interception. DL Marcus Stroud had three tackles and a sack. DL Bobby McCray had a sack. DL Rob Meier had a sack. LB Kenneth Pettway had a sack. LB Daryl Smith had four tackles. LB Clint Ingram had eight tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Jaguars a low-end No. 2 DST for Week 14 against the Colts. Use all IDP players as needed despite the difficult matchup.
News: Despite being on the losing end in Week 12, the Jaguars defense had a strong outing against the Bills. They held them to 241 yards of total offense, but a 82-yard punt return for a touchdown proved costly. The Jags got no sacks in the game, but rookie DB Dee Webb, making his first start, got his first career interception.
Analysis: The Jags defense has been decimated this season by injuries, yet, they still somehow manage to put together solid outings. Consider using the Jags DST in Week 13 against the Dolphins. Webb is not a viable Fantasy option at this time.
News: At some point, the defensive losses might be too much for the Jacksonville Jaguars to overcome. They don't believe they've reached it yet, even after losing safety Donovin Darius for the season with a broken right leg Monday night against the New York Giants. "That's a big injury for us," safety Gerald Sensabaugh said Tuesday. "He was our leader on the field and he's a tough guy to replace. But once somebody goes down, we can't stay down about it. We have to fill his shoes and move on.
Analysis: The Jaguars (6-4) have eight defensive players on injured reserve, including their top tackler and best pass rusher, and played five games without three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud. Nonetheless, the Jaguars have two shutouts and have given up 137 points - the third-fewest in the league behind Chicago and New England - even after allowing 36 in a loss at Washington. Consider using the Jaguars DST in Week 12 as they take on the Bills.
News: The Jaguars contained the high-powered Giants offense in Week 11 holding them to 247 yards and just 10 points. DL Bobby McCray had the team's lone sack, while LB Clint Ingram and DB Deon Grant had interceptions.
Analysis: The Jaguars had another strong outing this season and remain an above-average defense. Consider using the Jaguars DST in Week 12 as they take on the Bills. McCray is worth using as a low-end Fantasy DL.
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars waived defensive tackle Montavious Stanley and signed defensive end James Wyche from the practice squad Tuesday. Wyche could help right away because the Jaguars have four defensive ends on injured reserve, including starter Reggie Hayward and promising rookie Brent Hawkins. Wyche, a seventh-round pick from Syracuse, spent the first 10 weeks on the practice squad.
Analysis: Stanley was signed in September from St. Louis' practice squad and played in three games, helping in the absence of defensive tackle Marcus Stroud. Stroud, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, had missed the last five games, but hopes to return Monday night against the New York Giants.
News: Jaguars DL Marcus Stroud (ankle) will return to practice this week, but coach Jack Del Rio isn't sure if he'll play against the Giants. Stroud hasn't played since Oct. 1.
Analysis: This is good news for the Jaguars DST if Stroud can play. Continue to monitor the situation before putting Stroud back in your lineup for IDP leagues.
News: The Jaguars allowed 13 points and 306 yards of offense in Week 10 vs. Houston. They did not force any turnovers, but did sack Texans QB David Carr three times.
Analysis: The Jaguars did all they could to keep their team in the game and were not picked apart by the Texans all game. They continue to be an above-average Fantasy unit and should start in larger leagues despite a tough matchup against the Giants in Week 11.
News: Three defensive starters returned to practice Friday for the Jaguars and were expected to play against the Houston Texans. Cornerback Rashean Mathis (hamstring), defensive tackle John Henderson (hamstring) and safety Donovin Darius (knee) had missed the previous two days of practice. All three remain questionable, but returning to practice was a sign they would be able to play Sunday. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (ankle) was officially ruled out, and will miss his fifth consecutive game.
Analysis: Expect the Jaguars defense to be solid in Fantasy use in Week 10.
News: Jacksonville DB Rashean Mathis (leg), DL John Henderson (hamstring) and LB Jorge Cordova (hamstring) were hurt in the Jaguars' 37-7 win over Tennessee. Mathis injured his leg when he was nearing the goal line after his second interception, his seventh in the last nine games, when Titans QB Vince Young shoved him out of bounds.
Analysis: Mathis is arguably the Jaguars best defensive player. Keep an eye on his injury before using him in IDP leagues. The Jaguars DST has a good matchup in Week 10 against Houston.
News: The Jaguars defense held Tennessee to seven points, scoring a touchdown on one of three Vince Young interceptions. They also added a forced fumble and a sack in Week 9.
Analysis: They should keep it up against a shaky Houston offense next week. Definitely keep the Jaguars defense active in Week 10.
News: The Jaguars held a very potent Eagles offense to just six points and 227 yards of total offense in Week 8 at Philadelphia. They held MVP candidate Donovan McNabb to his lowest passing total by far on the season (161 yards) and sacked him four times.
Analysis: This looks more like the defense that started the season on fire. This bounce-back performance makes them a nice option in leagues of 12-plus teams for Week 9 vs. Tennessee.
News: Jaguars DL Marcus Stroud (ankle) was listed as inactive for the third straight week in Week 8 at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Keep Stroud reserved in all IDP leagues. His absence continues to hurt the Jaguars defense.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio did downgrade DL Marcus Stroud, saying the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle will miss his third straight game with a sprained and bruised right ankle.
Analysis: Keep Stroud reserved in all IDP leagues. His absence continues to hurt the Jaguars defense.
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars DT Marcus Stroud (ankle) will be listed as doubtful for Week 8 at Philadelphia. He could be a candidate to practice later in the week.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense is banged up and not reliable for Fantasy use, especially against a potent offensive team like the Eagles. Try to avoid using the Jacksonville defense in Week 8.
News: Jacksonville DL Bobby McCray has been charged with reckless driving and possession of a controlled painkiller after being stopped for racing with another player. According to a police report, a Jacksonville sheriff's officer saw McCray's car coming up on his car from behind with flashing blue and white lights Sunday. He thought it was an emergency vehicle so he moved over, the report said. McCray's car and two other vehicles then passed the officer, who determined McCray's car was traveling at 92 mph in a 65 mph zone. When McCray was pulled over, he told the officer he had come across one of his teammates and they were just playing around. McCray was arrested on charges of racing on the highway, reckless driving and prohibited use of the blue lights. While searching McCray, the officer says he found two white pills in his front pocket. He told officers the pills were Vicodin and a trainer had given them to him. The pills were later identified by a poison control worker as the painkiller hydrocodone and Tylenol. The police report said McCray was taken to the Duval County Jail, but a database of people arrested does not list McCray. A call to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was not immediately returned Monday. McCray is a seventh-round draft pick out of Florida. He had nine sacks and 48 tackles in his first two seasons with the Jaguars. The team declined to comment.
Analysis: McCray has no Fantasy value, so this shouldn't hurt owners in IDP leagues. If, as expected, he's forced to miss any time, this will hurt the Jaguars DST, which is already missing several players from its original starting group.
News: The Texans racked up 27 points on 349 total yards of offense in Week 7 against the Jaguars. The Jaguars sacked Texans QB David Carr just once and could not force a turnover. DB Donovin Darius and LB Daryl Smith led the team with eight tackles a piece.
Analysis: It was not a good day for the Jaguars defense. They have been beat up on defense this year by injuries and it could finally be taking its toll. Without LB Mike Peterson and with the Eagles, the Jags Week 8 opponent, coming off a tough loss to the Bucs, consider using another DST in Week 8. Darius is still a viable Fantasy DB in IDP leagues despite a rough year. Smith is not a viable option at this time.
News: Jags DT Marcus Stroud finally sat out the Jets' game before the bye, but he says he'll return to the lineup Sunday in Houston even though he's still not 100 percent. He only sat out in Week 5 because the coaches insisted. Stroud, who got out of the boot he's been wearing on his right ankle Monday, said he's feeling better after two weeks off, but he's still not completely healed. Stroud didn't practice Monday when the Jaguars returned to drills after having the bye weekend off and doesn't know if he'll get the green light to practice Wednesday when the Jaguars open practice drills for Sunday's game at Houston. Still, he has no doubt he'll play Sunday. "Definitely," he said.
Analysis: Playing at Houston in Week 7 is a receipe for Fantasy dominance. Absolutely consider the Jaguars defense a must-start for the coming week.
News: CB Ahmad Carroll agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, a week after he was waived by the Green Bay Packers. The team is expected to place LB Mike Peterson (torn pectoral muscle) on injured reserve on Wednesday, when he will be officially signed.
Analysis: Carroll was lit up in Philadelphia in his last game as a member of the Green Bay Packers. Avoid him in all IDP leagues, as he is unlikely to start. His addition gives the Jaguars DST depth, as they are already a top-notch Fantasy unit.
News: The Jaguars will be without leading tackler Mike Peterson for the rest of the season, another significant setback for the defense. Peterson tore a pectoral muscle early in the 41-0 victory against the Jets on Sunday. Tests Monday determined the severity of the injury. Coach Jack Del Rio said Peterson likely will get a second opinion, but he was confident Peterson will be place on injured reserve. "It's unfortunate," Del Rio said. "Mike is obviously a very good football player and a very spirited leader. ... It's another blow for us to overcome. The way we approach it is we prepare our guys to be able to step up and fill the gap. We expect guys to play well around them and we continue on our quest."
Analysis: Peterson is expected to be replaced by Jorge Cordova, though Cordova could move into an outside LB position, putting Daryl Smith or Nick Greisen at middle linebacker. Regardless, this will sting the Jaguars defense, which is already without DE Reggie Hayward and LB Pat Thomas for the season. Consider them a good defense when they play at Houston in Week 7, but be careful about who you start them against in the weeks after that.
News: The Jaguars DST got a shutout against the Jets with three interceptions and a fumble recovery. DB Terry Cousin had six tackles and an interception. DB Brian Williams had three tackles and an interception. DB Deon Grant had an interception. LB Nick Greisen had a fumble recovery. DL Bobby McCray had 1.5 sacks. DL Rob Meier had a sack. DL John Henderson had a sack. DL Montavious Stanley had a sack. And DL Tony McDaniel had a half-sack.
Analysis: The Jaguars are on a bye in Week 6 but consider the DST and all prominent IDP players excellent starts for Week 7 against Houston.
News: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said on Wednesday that after getting burned by Santana Moss in Week 4, the Jags will be very aware of WR Laveranues Coles when the Jets visit in Week 5. "We struggled with an explosive playmaker last week and we see Laveranues Coles as being that type of guy," Del Rio said. "He already had 30 receptions. We feel like they present a lot of challenges there." Del Rio also added that DT Marcus Stroud (ankle, groin) is doubtful to play against the Jets in Week 5.
Analysis: Saying they're going to limit Coles and doing it are two totally different things, although we keep faith in CB Rashean Mathis being a great NFL player, and he'll be the guy covering Coles. Losing Stroud will also hurt the Jaguars against the Jets, but consider them a decent unit to use in Week 5.
News: The Jaguars DST allowed 36 points and 481 total net yards in Week 4 at Washington. They did not have any sacks, just one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST is a solid option for Week 5 against QB Chad Pennington and the Jets.
News: The Jaguars defense mustered up just two sacks of Peyton Manning in Week 3, holding the Colts' juggernaut to 21 points. They held the Colts to 63 rush yards and 219 pass yards, but did allow a special teams touchdown early in the game.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense will play at Washington in Week 4. True, the Redskins housed the Texans in Week 3, but that's not the Jaguars. Start the Jacksonville defense in Week 4.
News: Jaguars safety Donovin Darius (back), cornerback Rashean Mathis (knee), defensive end Paul Spicer (groin) and defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (ankle) returned to practice Thursday and remained questionable for Week 3 at Indianapolis. "We want to be prepared, but we also want to be as healthy and fresh as possible for the game," coach Jack Del Rio said. "We have to get our team ready to play and have a contingency plan in case some guy doesn't respond."
Analysis: It looks as though the Jaguars want to be prepared to take on the Colts and QB Peyton Manning. Having Mathis, Spicer, Stroud and Darius back at practice on Thursday is a definite boost to the Jaguars D. For IDP purposes, Mathis and Darius should be starting if healthy. The Jaguars have played well as a team in recent games against the Colts, but it is still a big risk starting a DST against Manning. You make the call.

Jags going from good to great?
News: Though they often play tough against Peyton Manning and the Colts, the Jaguars can't expect to hold a Super Bowl contender scoreless for a second straight week as they visit the RCA Dome on Sunday. Besides having never been shut out in 130 regular-season games since Manning's arrival in 1998, the Colts lead the NFL this season with 69 points and are third in total offense with 428.0 yards per game. Jacksonville did shut down the defending champions in its most recent performance, holding the Steelers to 153 total yards and nine first downs in a 9-0 victory Monday. The Jaguars spoiled Ben Roethlisberger's return, intercepting two of his passes, and allowed Pittsburgh to cross midfield only once. "We've been a 'good' defense," LB Mike Peterson said. "We're trying to get in that 'great' category."
Analysis: The Jags could jump into that category by cooling off the Colts, but only the gutsiest (or most desperate) Fantasy Football owner would start a defensive unit against Indy. Think long and hard about benching them unless points against and yards against mean nothing in your league's scoring.

Jags gets shutout vs. Steelers
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars posted a shutout in Monday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. The Jags had two sacks and two interceptions in the win. DL Marcus Stroud (ankle) was able to play and so did LB Mike Peterson (knee).
Analysis: The Jaguars did a great job in the win on Monday, but they are not a recommended play for Week 3 at Indianapolis.
News: Linebacker Mike Peterson and defensive linemen Paul Spicer and Marcus Stroud returned to practice Friday for the Jacksonville Jaguars and are expected to play against Pittsburgh on Monday night. They remained questionable on the team's injury report, but showed signs of improvement after missing practice Thursday.
Analysis: The Jags will be without defensive end Reggie Hayward, who ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the season opener against Dallas and was placed on injured reserve. Peterson sprained his right knee Aug. 26, but started the season opener against Dallas. Stroud also played against the Cowboys despite a sprained right ankle. Spicer has a strained groin muscle. The Jaguars DST should be able to matchup well with the Steelers in a low-scoring game. They are always a solid option every week.

Jaguars DST banged
News: The Jaguars are thin at defensive end. Reggie Hayward was lost for the season with a ruptured Achilles and Paul Spicer is questionable for the Pittsburgh game with a groin injury. Hayward went on IR and was replaced by Montavious Stanley, who was signed off the St. Louis practice squad after being drafted on the sixth round by Dallas and then being cut. Also, LB Mike Peterson is questionable with a sprained MCL, but he played with it last week and probably will again. DT Marcus Stroud is questionable this week with an ankle injury, but he played last week and probably will again. S Gerald Sensabaugh is questionable with a high ankle sprain but he played last week and probably will again.
Analysis: The Jaguars DST should be able to matchup well with the Steelers in a low-scoring game. They are always a solid option every week.

DE Meier to get Week 2 start?
News: Jaguars.com is reporting DE Rob Meier might start in Week 2 against the Steelers in place of DL Reggie Hayward (Achilles'). The defensive end suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon is will miss the remainder of the season. "I consider Rob Meier a fifth starter for us. My first thought is to put Rob Meier at left end and leave him there," coach Jack Del Rio said.
Analysis: We figured journeyman veteran DE Marcellus Wiley might be in line for the start, but apparently Meier will get the nod instead. Either way, the Jaguars DST remains a solid play in most Fantasy leagues.
9/10/2006

DL Hayward out for the year
News: Reggie Hayward tore his Achilles' tendon in the third quarter of Week 1 against the Cowboys and is lost for the season. It wasn't all bad for the Jaguars, though, as they had two sacks and three interceptions while 17 points and 323 total net yards.
Analysis: Hayward will officially be placed on injured reserve early in the week. DE Marcellus Wiley will likely start in his absence. This is a big blow for the overall Fantasy appeal of the Jacksonville DST, but they remain a viable No. 1 unit.

DL Reggie Hayward pulls up lame
News: Hayward suffered a left Achilles' strain in the third quarter of Week 1 at Dallas and he was forced to leave the game. He pulled up lame while rushing QB Drew Bledsoe and immediately grasped the area on the back of his leg where the Achilles' tendon is.
Analysis: The severity of Hayward's injury is not yet known, but his afternoon is over. His injury certainly did not look good. We'll let you know more on his status and how it affects the Fantsay value of the Jaguars DST when more information becomes available after the game.

Jags DST a little banged up
News: Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud missed a second consecutive day of practice Friday and remained questionable for the season opener Sunday against Dallas. Stroud, who has played in every game in his five-year career, sprained his right ankle in practice Wednesday and has been in a protective boot since. Linebacker Mike Peterson practiced for the second day in a row Friday, but was also listed as questionable. Peterson, the team's top tackler the last three years, sprained a knee ligament Aug. 26.
Analysis: Without Peterson, the Jaguars would have a much less experienced linebacking corps. Daryl Smith, who has started 29 games the last two years, would move to the middle and probably play alongside Nick Greisen and Jorge Cordova. That would be a disaster for the Jags against a strong running team like the Cowboys. Peterson's status needs to be watched before cementing him as a starter in Week 1. Keep him reserved until further notice.

Jaguars defense a mess
News: The Florida Times-Union reported Friday that Jaguars CB Brian Williams was arrested last Saturday and charged with driving under the influence. Williams refused to take a breathalyzer test and failed a field sobriety test. He did practice with the team this week; no word if the team plans on suspending him. Elsewhere, Jaguars DT Marcus Stroud suffered a right ankle injury at practice Wednesday and was in a boot and on crutches on Thursday. The paper said he was grimacing with each step he took. He is not expected to play Sunday vs. Dallas. And, LB Mike Peterson (sprained MCL) did practice on Thursday but has not been cleared to play yet; that will be determined on Friday.
Analysis: Losing Stroud definitely hurts the Jaguars defense, but Peterson would help make up for it. Jacksonville would certainly be more susceptible to the run without both Stroud and Peterson, and if Williams is suspended, he'd hurt their passing defense. If Peterson and Stroud are both out, take the chance that the Jaguars won't be reliable against Dallas and pick another unit (the Jets may actually be a favorable option at the Titans).

Jags secondary ready for T.O.
News: CBs Rashean Mathis and Brian Williams could have chosen any team to play in Jacksonville's season opener, they agree it would have been Dallas. After all, what would have been better - and potentially more rewarding - than trying to shut down receiver Terrell Owens in his much-anticipated Cowboys debut? "I love the challenge," Williams said. "I wouldn't want to go out there and have an easy opponent. You want to go out there and play the best. If he's the best, we want to play him."
Analysis: Mathis and Williams will get the chance Sunday when Owens officially begins his Cowboys career against Jacksonville and returns to Alltel Stadium for the first time since the 2005 Super Bowl. "He's a good receiver," Mathis said. "He deserves all the respect given to him, all the hype. He makes plays year in and year out. But our defense is up to the task. Whoever we go against, we're going to hit him and hit him hard."

Jags' Stroud to miss Week 1
News: The Florida Times-Union reports that Jaguars DT Marcus Stroud suffered a right ankle injury at practice Wednesday and was in a boot and on crutches on Thursday. The paper said he was grimacing with each step he took. In better news, LB Mike Peterson did practice on Thursday; the team will determine his status for Sunday's game on Friday.
Analysis: Losing Stroud would definitely hurt the Jaguars defense, but Peterson would help make up for it. Jacksonville would certainly be more susceptible to the run. If Peterson and Stroud are both out, take the chance that the Jaguars won't be reliable against Dallas and pick another unit (the Jets may actually be a favorable option at the Titans).

Jags to play without Peterson?
News: Jaguars linebacker Mike Peterson completed several running drills Wednesday, but missed practice and was listed as questionable for the season opener against Dallas. Peterson, the team's top tackler the last three years, sprained a ligament in his right knee during a preseason game nearly two weeks ago. He spent a week on crutches, then started running again Monday. "I'll have to see him work in order to play him on Sunday," coach Jack Del Rio said. Also on Wednesday, DT Marcus Stroud injured his ankle in practice; his status is not officially known.
Analysis: Without him, the Jaguars would have a much less experienced linebacking corps. Daryl Smith, who has started 29 games the last two years, would move to the middle and probably play alongside Nick Greisen and Jorge Cordova. That would be a disaster for the Jags against a strong running team like the Cowboys. Owners will have a hard time benching the Jacksonville defense, but if Peterson and Stroud are both out, take the chance that they won't be reliable against Dallas and pick another unit (the Jets may actually be a favorable option at the Titans).

LB Peterson sprains MCL on Sat.
News: LB Mike Peterson, the team's emotional leader, sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay. He likely will not be ready for the regular season opener Sept. 10 against Dallas.
Analysis: When healthy, Peterson helps make the Jacksonville DST as No. 1 unit. His loss might drop them down into No. 2 Fantasy consideration.

Jags have nine sacks so far
News: The Jaguars defense hasn't picked off a pass in two preseason games but they have racked up nine sacks. However, they have allowed 26 and 17 points in those two games.
Analysis: Expect this to change (or else Jacksonville will tumble) in time for the regular season. Owners should continue to consider the Jags as a No. 1 DST in Fantasy Football, worth a middle- to late-round pick as the fifth or sixth DST selected in drafts. Just remember that they play the Colts twice a year.

Jags DST makes 28 turnovers
News: The Jaguars DST met expectations in 2005, catching 28 takeaways and adding three defensive scores. They ranked as a top-12 Fantasy DST crew.

Can the Jags stop Brady?
News: Jacksonville's defense is solid (seventh against the pass, 14th vs. the run), but they will be busy against a Patriots offense that is effective at both running and passing. Specifically, New England is second in passing (257.5 pass yards per game) with 28 passing TDs.
Analysis: Jacksonville's defense is actually more apt to slow down Corey Dillon than Tom Brady. Either way, the game should look like a 24-20 outing when all is said and done, leaving Jacksonville without a staunch defensive game.

JAX's D strong early
News: According to the Florida Times-Union, the Jaguars have outscored their opponents 26-0 in the first quarter and are the only team in the NFL not to have allowed a point in the opening period this season.
