49ers sign Philip Wheeler

(4/30/2015) The 49ers signed linebacker Philip Wheeler , the team announced on Thursday. 

Wheeler played the last two years with the Dolphins, after four years with the Colts and one with the Raiders. Miami released him on March 10. 

Wheeler had 46 tackles last year, his fewest since his rookie year. It was also just the third season he's been held to no sacks. 


Report: LB Philip Wheeler to visit 49ers

(3/30/2015) Linebacker Philip Wheeler is scheduled to visit with the 49ers on Monday, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Wheeler was released by the Dolphins earlier this month, saving the team $3 million in cap space.

In seven seasons with the Colts, Raiders and Dolphins, the 30-year-old has recorded 493 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed and four forced fumbles.

(3/10/2015) The Dolphins have yet to release linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler, and are currently seeking a trade before the league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, reports Alex Marvez of FOX Sports. According to the Palm Beach Post, Miami is looking to trade both players for eighth-round draft picks.

Report: Dolphins part ways with LB Philip Wheeler

(3/7/2015) The Dolphins have released linebacker Philip Wheeler with a post-June 1 designation, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday. Miami will save $3 million in cap space this offseason.

Miami signed Wheeler to a five-year, $26 million deal, with $13 million fully guaranteed back in 2013. After posting 118 tackles in 2013, Wheeler played less than 400 snaps and was limited to only 45 in 2014.

Dolphins relatively healthy entering Week 8 at Jacksonville

(10/24/2014) The Dolphins enter Week 8 at Jacksonville relatively healthy despite having 14 players on the final injury report for Sunday's game.

Jimmy Wilson (hamstring) was the only player that was unable to practice all week. He's been ruled doubtful for the game. Samson Satele (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice all week and was labeled questionable.

Meanwhile, Branden Albert (elbow), Charles Clay (knee), John Denney (knee), Cortland Finnegan (neck), Brandon Gibson (hamstring), Brian Hartline (finger), Lamar Miller (knee), Koa Misi (ankle), Shelley Smith (knee), Ryan Tannehill (ankle), Dallas Thomas (shoulder) and Philip Wheeler (shoulder, thumb) were all deemed probable.

(10/17/2014) The Dolphins are in fine shape for their Week 7 game at Chicago. Nearly all the players on their Friday injury report are probable.

The exceptions are wide receiver Brandon Gibson (hamstring), who is doubtful, and cornerback Cortland Finnegan (neck) and guard Shelley Smith (knee), who are questionable.

The offensive probables are tackle Branden Albert (shoulder), tight end Charles Clay (knee), running back Lamar Miller (foot), center Samson Satele (fibula) and wideout Mike Wallace (foot).

The defensive probables are linebackers Jelani Jenkins (abdomen), Koa Misi (ankle) and Philip Wheeler (shoulder) and tackles Anthony Johnson (shoulder) and Randy Starks (back).

The team has listed a number of players as probable. Lineman Samson Satele, DT Randy Starks, LB Koa Misi, LB Jelani Jenkins, LB Philip Wheeler, LT Branden Albert and G Dallas Thomas should all be able to play during the contest.

Koa Misi (ankle) is the lone player in the group that has been ruled out. Jonathan Freeny (calf), Jelani Jenkins (shoulder) and Philip Wheeler (thumb) are probable while Jordan Tripp (chest) is doubtful.

Also ruled out are running back Knowshon Moreno (elbow) and guard Shelley Smith (knee). Defensive end Terrence Fede (knee) and center Mike Pouncey (hip) are doubtful while tight end Charles Clay (knee) and guard Billy Turner (foot) are questionable. Cornerback Walt Aikens (hand) is probable.

Listed as doubtful are defensive end Terrence Fede (knee), center Mike Pouncey (hip) and linebacker Jordan Tripp (chest).

Tight end Charles Clay (knee) and guard Billy Turner (foot) are considered questionable.

Koa Misi only Dolphins defender sidelined Sunday

(9/14/2014) The Dolphins defense is mostly in good shape for Sunday's matchup against the Bills in Week 2, but they will be missing one key piece. Linebacker Koa Misi is inactive as a result of a knee injury suffered last week, though his absence was expected as he was listed as doubtful on the injury report.

Other than Misi, the rest of the team enters the game healthy enough to play. Linebackers Philip Wheeler (thumb) and Chris McCain (illness), defensive linemen Randy Starks (toe) and Derrick Shelby (knee), and defensive back Walt Aikens (hand) were all considered probable and are in uniform for the game.

Four players have been officially ruled out for the game. Defensive end Terrence Fede, center Mike Pouncey, linebacker Jordie Tripp and linebacker Philip Wheeler will not play against the Patriots. 

Guard Billy Turner is listed as doubtful due to a foot injury. 

The team also listed for players as probable. Safety Walt Aikens, cornerback Jamar Taylor and linebackers Chris McCain and Koa Misi should all see action Sunday.

(12/22/2013) One Dolphins linebacker reached the 100-tackle mark in Week 16 against the Bills, and another stands at the precipice after a 19-0 loss.

Philip Wheeler led the team with 14 tackles -- eight solo -- to bring his total for the season to 109. That matches his career-high, set a year ago. Dannell Ellerbe is just six tackles short of the century mark, after his 10-stop game left him with 94 with one game left in the season.

Wheeler racked up 12 tackles -- eight solo -- in the game, and added his first sack of the season as well. Wheeler also broke up two passes and picked up two tackles for a loss.
