News: 49ers defensive back Donte Whitner found the end zone for the first time this season in Week 12 against the Saints. Whitner stepped in front of a Drew Bress pass attempt and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown in the the third quarter. It was his first interception of the season and eighth of his career. He finished with eight tackles -- five solo -- in the 31-21 win and was also credited with a pass defended.
Analysis: Whitner registered his second career touchdown against the Saints and his first since his days with the Bills. While the 27-year-old continues to be one of the leaders of the 49ers' secondary, his impact to Fantasy owners has been minimal. Whitner only has one INT and two pass defended on the year to go along with 55 tackles. He should be considered more of a low-end option in deeper IDP formats at this point in the season.
News: 49ers defensive back Donte Whitner finished with a team-high seven tackles in Week 8 against the Cardinals. All seven of his tackles were solo stops and he now has 37 tackles on the year. The 49ers beat the Cardinals 24-3.
Analysis: Whitner has been a bit of a disappointment thus far as he has yet to record an interception and only has one passes defended to his name. While he does have 37 tackles, only owners in deeper IDP formats should consider rolling with him when the 49ers host the Rams in Week 10. San Francisco is on a bye in Week 9.
News: 49ers defensive back Donte Whitner had six tackles Sunday at the Vikings in Week 3. He had four solo tackles. Whitner now has 13 tackles on the season.
Analysis: Whitner is worth using in deep IDP leagues in Week 4 at the Jets. Mark Sanchez just threw two interceptions at Miami in Week 3. Maybe he'll do the same against the 49ers in Week 4, which could help Whitner.
News: 49ers defensive back Donte Whitner finished with three solo tackles Week 2 against the Lions. He now has seven tackles (six solo) and one pass defense through two games.
Analysis: Whitner is a very good NFL safety, but that doesn't always translate into Fantasy success. Whitner plays on one of the best defenses in the NFL and doesn't always have to make plays like he did when he had a career-high 140 tackles in 2010 with Buffalo. Whitner also doesn't get a lot of interceptions, so he remains just a low-end Fantasy option despite being a very good safety.
News: 49ers DB Donte Whitner finished with five tackles -- four solo -- in Week 14 against the Cardinals. He was also credited with a pass defended in the defeat and now has 54 tackles on the season.
Analysis: Whitner has struggled to match the numbers he put up in Buffalo last season, but has still been somewhat productive. He now has a career-high 10 passes defended this season to go along with two interceptions. Leave him active in deeper formats heading into Week 15.
News: San Francisco DB Donte Whitner tallied six tackles during the 49ers' 16-6 loss to Baltimore in Week 12 on Thursday night. Whitner racked up at least six tackles in a game for the fourth time this season and now has 46 total stops.
Analysis: Whitner was coming off one of his best outings of the season in Week 11 when he had an interception against Arizona, but could not duplicate that feat on Thursday. He has seemingly alternated between strong and poor outings for most of the season during his sixth year in the NFL. Consider him a viable option in Fantasy IDP formats.
News: San Francisco S Donte Whitner had three tackles (2 solo), an interception, two passes defended, and a fumble recovery in the 49ers Week 11 victory over the Cardinals.
Analysis: While the tackle number was low that was a recurring theme for 49ers defenders in the win as they kept Arizona's offense off the field for most of the game. Whitner still put up solid numbers across the board in Week 11, and has become a decent option in Fantasy IDP formats.
News: San Francisco DB Donte Whitner racked up a season-high seven tackles during the 49ers' 27-20 victory over the Giants in Week 10. All of Whitner's stop came on individual efforts as he surpassed his previous season best of six tackles set in Week 9 against Washington.
Analysis: Whitner, who was one of three San Francisco defenders to post at least seven tackles, also recorded a pass defended on Sunday. He seems to have overcome a hip injury and should be viewed as a viable option in deeper Fantasy IDP formats.
News: 49ers DB Donte Whitner (hip) is active for Week 4 at Philadelphia. He was questionable on the injury report.
Analysis: Whitner will start at strong safety and will have a chance to make a lot of plays against an explosive Eagles offense. Consider him a viable Fantasy DB for Week 4.
News: 49ers DB Donte Whitner (hip) is listed as questionable for Week 4 at Philadelphia. Although, coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday that he expects Whitner to play.
Analysis: Whitner, who injured his hip at Cincinnati, tweeted this week that hes always dreamed of playing against Eagles QB Michael Vick. Well, now he has to get healthy in order for that to happen. Whitner is a viable Fantasy DB when healthy, so continue to track his progress leading up to inactives.
News: 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio expressed doubt about S Donte Whitner's availability week 4 against the Eagles. Hes highly questionable right now, he said. He started to do some things in practice, but didnt finish. I dont know his status for the game right now.
Analysis: Whitner, who injured his hip at Cincinnati, tweeted that hes always dreamed of playing against Eagles QB Michael Vick. Well, now he has to get healthy in order for that to happen. Whitner is a viable Fantasy DB when healthy, so continue to track his progress.
News: Niners DB Donte Whitner managed two tackles in Week 3 at Cincinnati. He was also credited with a pass defensed. For Whitner, the two tackles were a season low.
Analysis: Whitner has been credited with at least one pass defensed in each of the first three weeks of the season. He managed three in Week 2 against Dallas and remains a steady source for help in that category in IDP formats.
News: Former Buffalo DB Donte Whitner officially signed his three-year deal with San Francisco on Saturday, giving the 49ers a veteran leader in their revamped secondary and a missing piece in the 3-4 scheme being implemented by new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Whitner signed a deal reportedly worth $11.75 million with $4 million guaranteed. He chose the 49ers over Cincinnati, which Whitner said offered him a similar contract. Whitner was fifth in the NFL in tackles last season and has been doing that since recording 104 tackles in his first year.
Analysis: Whitner's aggressive in-the-box style is well-suited to Fangio's defense, and the sixth-year veteran also is determined to help mend what's broken in a unit that ranked 24th in the NFL last season in passing defense. "We have a lot of work to do on the back end, and I think everybody here knows it," Whitner said. "We know it in the secondary, and we're looking forward to it. I'm taking responsibility for getting this secondary in San Francisco to be one of the top secondaries in the league." Whitner could match his production from last season and should be considered with a late-round pick in Fantasy IDP drafts.
News: In a wild turn of events on Thursday, former Bills safety Donte Whitner backed out of his agreement with the Bengals and officially signed with the 49ers, according to ESPN. Whitner is coming off of his best tackling campaign in 2010, notching a career-high 140 tackles while playing in every game for the first time. Terms of his deal were not immediately disclosed.
Analysis: Whitner was said to be on the way out in Buffalo months ago, so the fact that he is out of town is not a surprise. What is, however, is that he Tweeted that he was a Bengal before changing his mind. The 49ers are expected to bring him in to start immediately, with Dashon Goldson testing the market and Taylor Mays on the trading block. Whitner is not an impact player at the back-end, but he has gotten in on enough tackles over the years to warrant low-end Fantasy value. Consider him as a selection late in IDP drafts.
News: Bills GM Buddy Nix all but confirmed that safety Donte Whitner won't return to the team, reports The Sports Xchange. Nix was asked about the team's defensive backs after the Bills selected three in the draft. Appearing on WEDG-FM, Nix first talked about free agent cornerback Drayton Florence and said, "We think Drayton wants to be here, and we want him here. We're gonna try to sign Drayton Florence." However, when asked about Whitner, Nix said, "Donte Whitner I don't think wants to be here, and he probably won't."
Analysis: Whitner produces a lot of stats but has also given up his fair share of plays. We'll assume that he ends up on his feet this offseason and remains a decent Fantasy option. Think late-round pick on Whitner.
News: The Bills have tendered contracts to three potential free agents, including DB Donte Whitner and LB Paul Posluszny. The moves temporarily secure the players' rights, though it's unclear what their status will be under a new collective bargaining agreement after the current one expires on Thursday night. TE Scott Chandler was also tendered a contract by the Bills on Tuesday. Whitner completed a five-year contract last season, and questioned whether he'd return to Buffalo after negotiations broke down in December. Posluszny completed a four-year deal and has said he's open to re-signing with the Bills. Chandler joined the Bills in December after being claimed on waivers from Dallas.
Analysis: Whitner had by far the best year of his career in 2010. He played a full season for the first time and finished with 140 tackles. If he returns to the Bills as expected then he should remain a solid Fantasy option in IDP leagues and is worth a late-round pick.
News: The writing appears to be on the wall for SS Donte Whitner, who has been looking for a new contract from the Bills. "Tenuous would be a word you could use there," coach Chan Gailey said. "He's a really good player; you'd love to have him on your football team. But we're in a business where that doesn't happen every time."
Analysis: Whitner had by far the best year of his career in 2010. He played a full season for the first time and finished with 140 tackles. Whitner is expected to be a starter in the NFL somewhere next season and will be a solid Fantasy option in IDP leagues.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner made 12 tackles in a Week 16 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Whitner has played very well in his first year as a full-time starter with 136 tackles in 15 games, a total that ranks him first among defensive backs. If he had more than one interception on the season, Whitner would be a must-start IDP Fantasy option, but teams don't need to throw much on the Bills. Continue to use Whitner in most IDp formats.
News: Amidst a contract dispute, Bills safety Donte Whitner led the team in tackles in the Week 15 win over the Dolphins. He racked up eight tackles -- six solo -- on the day to go along with 1/2 a sack.
Analysis: Whitner has been a tackling machine this season, and now he's passed the 120-mark which shatters his previous career-high. It's interesting to see him play at a high level despite his well-publicized frustration with the contract talks between he and the Bills. Continue to roll with the former Ohio State Buckeye in Fantasy play.
News: Unhappy with the Bills latest contract offer, safety Donte Whitner is eyeing the distinct possibility of becoming a free agent. Calling himself both surprised and hurt on Thursday, Whitner said he and the Bills are far apart in negotiations after the two sides held talks this week. Though Whitner said the Bills were scheduled to contact his agent, Tom Condon, later in the day, the player didn't sound optimistic of a deal getting done. "It's not looking good right now," Whitner said at his locker prior to practice as the Bills prepared for Miami on Sunday. "There was supposed to be another conversation today, but if things continue the way that they're going, obviously I'm going to have to hit the free-agent market and see my true value." Whitner's comments are a marked turnaround a week after he expressed optimism that a deal could get done after talks opened last month. A starter since the Bills selected him out of Ohio State with the eighth pick in 2006, Whitner is completing the final of a five-year contract. Whitner initially signed a six-year contract, but the final year was voided once he met certain playing-time goals as a rookie.
Analysis: Whitner would prefer to remain in Buffalo. He added he hasn't set a deadline for talks, but would prefer to have a deal completed by the end of the season, which the Bills close after playing the New York Jets on Jan. 2. A hard-hitting tackler, though undersized at 5-foot-10 for his position, Whitner's second on the team this year with 115 tackles -- the third season he's had at least 100. He has one interception -- five for his career -- and no sacks this season. Whitner's also been part of a defense that has had difficulty stopping the run. Buffalo has allowed 200 yards rushing six times and ranks last in the NFL in allowing 166 yards per game. "I do think there's a lot of promise around here, and we are moving in the right direction," Whitner said. "I want to be here. Let's see if Buffalo wants me to stay here." As long as Whitner is active, then he remains a viable play in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner suited up Week 14 against the Browns after he came in as questionable with a knee injury. He finished with five tackles (two solo) and one forced fumble -- his first of the season.
Analysis: Whitner stands to cash in as he continues to add onto his career high in tackles, which is now at 116. As long as Whitner is active, then he remains a viable play in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner (questionable, knee) will play in Week 14 vs. the Browns after not appearing in the list of inactives.
Analysis: Whitner is second on the team this year with 110 tackles -- the third season he's had at least 100. Continue to view Whitner as a viable Fantasy DB as long as he's healthy.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 14 against the Browns after limited practice reps all week. But the team's official website reports Whitner is expected to start Sunday despite suffering a minor knee injury in Week 13.
Analysis: The injury is not the only thing on Whitner's plate right now. He is talking with the Bills about a new contract and hopes to have this issue resolved in the near future. His immediate future features a showdown with the Browns in Week 14. Unless Whitner has a setback, then plan on using him in Fantasy IDP leagues. He's second on the team this year with 110 tackles -- the third season he's had at least 100. Continue to view Whitner as a viable Fantasy DB.
News: Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner says he's having contract talks with the team in a bid to avoid becoming a free agent after this season. Whitner says the two sides have been negotiating for more than a month, but no deal has been reached. Whitner hopes a new contract can be reached because he'd prefer remaining in Buffalo (2-10) and help turn around a team that will miss the playoffs for an 11th straight season. Buffalo hosts Cleveland (5-7) in Week 14.
Analysis: Whitner has been a starter since his rookie season in 2006, after being drafted eighth overall out of Ohio State. He's second on the team this year with 110 tackles -- the third season he's had at least 100. Continue to view Whitner as a viable Fantasy DB. Even if he stays with a perennial loser like Buffalo, he clearly has shown he can still make plays and help Fantasy owners.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner got his second interception of the season, picking off Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson in a Week 13 loss. He also made seven tackles in the game.
Analysis: Whitner has been posting solid tackle numbers, and as a threat to reel in interceptions, he is a good No. 2 DB option in IDP formats.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner made a ridiculous 18 tackles in a Week 12 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Whitner is a solid starting DB in most IDP Fantasy leagues, and showed on Sunday that he can get to the ball as well as anyone out there. He was playing up in run support a lot and just couldn't stop bringing guys down. In Week 13 at Minnesota, Whitner will attract more attention than usual thanks to this outing.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner totaled six tackles (four solo) and one pass defense in Week 11 against the Bengals. He has 85 tackles in 10 games.
Analysis: Whitner has just 20 tackles in November after totaling 43 in October. He is still having a good month and is well on his way to a career season. Still, with no sacks or interceptions, Whitner is more of a No. 2 Fantasy DB.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner recorded six tackles, all solo, against the Lions in Week 10. He's up to 79 on season.
Analysis: Whitner has an elite number of tackles for a rookie and should easily surpass his career high of 104 set as a rookie in 2006. He should be owned in more than 51 percent of Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner continued to rack up the tackles in Week 9 against the Bears. Whitner finished with eight in the 22-19 loss. He now has 73 tackles on the season.
Analysis: Whitner continues to rack up the tackles this season. He has been hampered by injuries over the course of his career, but has rebounded with a strong and healthy 2010 campaign so far. Consider him a solid Fantasy DB in most IDP formats heading into Week 10.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner got 10 tackles in the 13-10 overtime loss at Kansas City in Week 8. It was the fourth time this season that Whitner made at least 10 tackles, and he now has 65 on the year.
Analysis: Whitner has been a consistent producer in Fantasy with his tackle count. Owners in IDP leagues looking to beef up in this area should give Whitner a look, as he should be a solid play in Week 9.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner was credited with eight tackles in Week 7 at the Ravens. He was also credited with a pass defensed.
Analysis: Whitner had a streak of three straight games with double digit tackles broken, but he has had at least eight tackles in all but one game this season. He remains a solid source for help in that area for IDP leagues and is a solid play as a result.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner had another productive game in Week 5 against the Jaguars. He collected 10 solo tackles and assisted on another in the 36-26 loss. He also recovered a fumble in the defeat.
Analysis: After a couple of slow games to start the season, Whitner has picked it up over the past four weeks. He has 46 tackles on the year and looks well on his way to a 100-tackles season, which would be his first since his rookie campaign. Whitner has been plagued by injuries over the last few years but looks strong and healthy again in 2010. He should begin to see more and more looks in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Buffalo DB Donte Whitner had a solid game defensively Week 4 in a blowout loss to the Jets. Whitner led the Bills in tackles with 13 in the performance. He did not have a sack or interception.
Analysis: Whitner has been a tackling machine this season after four games. He has 34 tackles in four games for an average of 8.5 per game. As a defensive back, that is solid production. He should begin to see more and more looks in Fantasy IDP leagues for Week 5 against the Jaguars.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner made a game-high 10 tackles in a Week 3 loss to the Patriots. He now has 21 tackles on the season.
Analysis: Whitner now has two games with nine or more tackles, and he might be able to rack up some more if teams keep putting up big yardage totals on Buffalo. He was a tackle machine earlier in his career, so keep a close eye on him in deeper IDP Fantasy formats. Buffalo hosts the Jets in Week 4.
News: Experiencing little difficulty in making the transition to the newly-introduced 3-4 defense brought in by first-year head coach Chan Gailey, Bills DB Donte Whitner has made his presence felt by providing a hard-hitting pop to practice that, at times, he had been missing in his previous four seasons in Buffalo. Whitner's been the most noticeable player - on defense or offense - since camp opened on July 29. He claims that the 3-4 system is very similar to the one he spent three years playing in at Ohio State. "I think this is a defense I should've been drafted into," said Whitner, who was selected eighth overall by Buffalo in 2006. "This scheme really fits my skills."
Analysis: Whitner was a productive safety in college and has been in the pros, too. But his tackle totals have declined season after season and he hasn't produced enough other numbers to be a useful option for Fantasy. Feel free to take a flier on him late in drafts.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner (10 tackles, interception), LB Paul Posluszny (10 tackles), DB Bryan Scott (nine tackles), LB Chris Draft (seven tackles, interception), DL Spencer Johnson (five tackles, sack), DB Drayton Florence (five tackles, interception) and DL Corey Mace (interception) in a Week 12 win over the Dolphins.
Analysis: Posluszny is the most Fantasy-viable name in this group and starts in most IDP leagues as a solid LB. Scott and Whitner have some minimal value in deeper leagues, while the others are not worth worrying about in Week 13 vs. the Jets.
News: Buffalo's Marcus Stroud has been ruled out because of a knee injury, meaning the NFL's worst run defense could be without both starting defensive tackles against Jacksonville this weekend. Kyle Williams has missed three games because of a knee injury, and was listed as questionable by interim head coach Perry Fewell on Friday. Williams has practiced sparingly this weekend. The Bills have only two other defensive tackles on their roster, reserves Spencer Johnson and John McCargo. While strong safety Donte Whitner is set to return after missing three games with an ankle injury, the Bills banged-up defense could be down another regular with rookie safety Jairus Byrd listed as questionable because of a nagging groin injury. Byrd has a league-leading eight interceptions to tie the Bills' rookie single-season record. He also has a five-game interception streak. And, reserve cornerback Ashton Youboty was also ruled out after hurting his ankle last weekend.
Analysis: Of these defenders, only Byrd and Whitner are worth your consideration. The rest don't belong on Fantasy rosters.
News: Buffalo S Donte Whitner, who's missed two games with an ankle injury, isn't sure whether he'll be ready to return this weekend for the team's Week 10 game against the Titans. He was officially listed as questionable for the game on Friday.
Analysis: Whitner has some low-end appeal in IDP formats when healthy but is likely someone that will have to be benched Week 10.
News: Buffalo lists the following players as inactive for Week 8 against Houston: WR Roscoe Parrish (3rd QB), DB Donte Whitner, DB Bryan Scott, RB Corey McIntyre, TE Shawn Nelson and DL Kyle Williams.
Analysis: Williams and Whitner have some low-end appeal in IDP formats but the rest of these players can be ignored in all formats.
News:Corey McIntyre (knee), Shawn Nelson (illness), Donte Whitner (ankle) and Kyle Williams (knee) have all been ruled out of the team's Week 8 game against the Texans.
Analysis: Williams and Whitner have some low-end appeal in IDP formats but the rest of these players can be ignored in all formats.
News: Starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams will miss Buffalo's game Sunday against Houston because of a knee injury sustained in last week's win over Carolina. The Bills will also be without starting safety Donte Whitner (ankle). Safety Bryan Scott is doubtful with an ankle injury, while Chris Kelsay (back) and cornerback Terrence McGee (knee) are both probable.
Analysis: Of these players, only McGee and Kelsay are even remotely useful Fantasy options because they're healthy. Consider them low-end choices for Week 8.
News: The Bills' list of inactives for Week 7 at Carolina includes DB Donte Whitner, DB Bryan Scott, RB Xavier Omon, TE Shawn Nelson, DL Chris Ellis and WR Roscoe Parrish.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to matter in Fantasy even when healthy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Bills S Donte Whitner (ankle) and CB Terrence McGee (chest contusion) are day-to-day, according to head coach Dick Jauron. Both were injured in the team's Week 6 game at the Jets.
Analysis: Whitner and McGee are useful when they're healthy, but so long as they're hobbled owners might want to look for help elsewhere. Generally, Whitner and McGee are good No. 3 DBs.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner left early Week 6 at the Jets with an ankle injury. He finished with two tackles, one solo.
Analysis: Whitner is a decent tackler for a defensive back, but you can't count on him for many interceptions. He's just a low-end Fantasy option regardless of this injury.
News: Buffalo starting middle linebacker Paul Posluszny and starting safety Donte Whitner are both probable for the Bills game at the New York Jets. Posluszny has missed the past four games because of a broken forearm, while Whitner missed his second straight game last Sunday because of a thumb injury. Both players participated fully in practice on Thursday and Friday. Starting safety Bryan Scott (ankle) is out for Sunday's game, while starting linebacker Keith Ellison (knee) is questionable. Starting cornerback Terrence McGee (knee) is probable.
Analysis: Posluszny is a quality run-stopping linebacker, Whitner can play against the run and the pass and McGee is one of the NFL's better cornerbacks. Check to see if these guys are available off waivers in your IDP league as other owners might have given up on them, especially Posluszny. Posluszny would be considered a No. 2 Fantasy LB and Whitner and McGee good No. 3 DBs. Ellison is a decent LB but probably should be avoided since he's not healthy, and Scott doesn't belong on rosters.
News: After losing one starter after another, the Bills were buoyed after safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Paul Posluszny returned to practice Wednesday. Both have a chance to play Sunday, when Buffalo plays the Jets. Their additions would provide a much-needed lift for a defense that placed linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs on injured reserve this week. Posluszny's missed four games with a broken left arm. Whitner's missed two weeks with an injured thumb. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell got the news Tuesday after Posluszny and Whitner were medically cleared. "That was the only time I smiled," Fewell said.
Analysis: Posluszny is a quality run-stopping linebacker while Whitner can play against the run and the pass. Check to see if Posluszny and Whitner are available off waivers in your IDP league as other owners might have given up on them. If they play against the Jets in Week 6, Posluszny would be considered a No. 2 Fantasy LB and Whitner a No. 3 DB.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner, who had surgery two weeks ago to repair ligaments in his right thumb and has missed the past two games, is hopeful he'll play in Week 6 against the Jets.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Whitner and hope he's ready to go. When healthy, he is a low-end DB in IDP leagues.
News: The Bill have listed the following players as being inactive for Week 5 against the Browns: QB Gibran Hamdan, WR Steve Johnson, FS Donte Whitner, CB Ellis Lankster, SS Bryan Scott, LB Paul Posluszny and DE Chris Ellis.
Analysis: The Bills defense remains banged up as they are still without Whitner and Posluszny. Whitner and Posluszny are viable Fantasy options in IDP leagues when healthy, but most of the other inactives have marginal appeal. Keep them reserved for Week 5.
News: Bills starting safeties Donte Whitner (thumb) and Bryan Scott (ankle) will both miss their second straight game while starting middle linebacker Paul Posluszny will miss his fourth game because of a broken forearm. Rookie safety Jairus Byrd (hip) and starting cornerback Terrence McGee (knee) are both probable. The Bills host the Browns in Week 5.
Analysis: Of these defenders, McGee is the only one worth using in Week 5 against the Browns. The rest won't be productive enough to warrant use.
News: Bills starting safeties Donte Whitner (right thumb) and Bryan Scott (left ankle) did not practice Wednesday and are likely to miss their second straight games in Week 5 against the Browns. Reserve defensive end Chris Ellis' status is uncertain; he remains excused after his mother died last weekend. Elsewhere, in a bid to bolster their run defense, the Bills shifted veteran starter Kawika Mitchell from outside to middle linebacker while moving rookie LB Ashlee Palmer to the outside and LB Marcus Buggs out of the starting lineup. DT John McCargo (groin) returned to practice.
Analysis: Of these players, only Mitchell deserves a pick up off waivers since he'll have the potential to post a bunch of tackles in the middle of a suspect Buffalo defense. Whitner is also worth holding on to in deeper IDP leagues since he's pretty good when he's healthy. Everyone else listed shouldn't be touched in standard Fantasy play.
News: Bills WR Steve Johnson, DB Donte Whitner, DB Leodis McKelvin, DB Bryan Scott, LB Paul Posluszny, DL Chris Ellis, DL John McCargo and QB Gibran Hamdan (emergency QB) have all been ruled inactive for Week 4 at Miami.
Analysis: The Bills defense is definitely banged up. They are still without Whitner, Posluszny and McCargo, and have lost McKelvin for the season. Whitner and Posluszny are viable Fantasy options in IDP leagues when healthy, but most of the other inactives have marginal appeal. Keep them reserved for Week 4.
News: Bills CD Leodis McKelvin (fibula), S Bryan Scott (ankle) and S Donte Whitner (thumb) have all been ruled out of the team's Week 4 game at Miami. Both Whitner and Scott were injured during Week 3 at New Orleans and McKelvin is out for the year.
Analysis: The harsh reality is that the only usable Fantasy DB on the Bills this week, and possibly in the coming weeks, is Terrence McGee. Consider him a No. 2 option at best, and that's if teams even throw in his direction and not in the way of the backup defenders. Whitner is just a No. 3 Fantasy DB when healthy and Scott is not worth owning in IDP formats.
News: The injuries keep piling up on the Bills, who could be missing three-quarters of their defensive backfield for their game at Miami this weekend. Cornerback Leodis McKelvin (broken leg) and safeties Donte Whitner (thumb) and Bryan Scott (high ankle sprain) missed practice Wednesday after they were hurt in a 27-7 loss against New Orleans last weekend. McKelvin is out and Whitner and Scott aren't likely to play. Drayton Florence is expected to fill in for McKelvin while George Wilson and Jairus Byrd will fill in at safety if needed.
Analysis: The harsh reality is that the only usable Fantasy DB on the Bills this week, and possibly in the coming weeks, is Terrence McGee. Consider him a No. 2 option at best, and that's if teams even throw in his direction and not in the way of the backup defenders. Everyone else on the list isn't worth owning in Fantasy play other than Whitner and McKelvin (No. 3 DBs when healthy).
News: The injuries haven't stopped coming for the Bills as FS Donte Whitner is week to week after undergoing thumb surgery this afternoon. He injured his thumb late in Sunday's loss to New Orleans.
Analysis: Expect to bench or release Whitner in IDP league play as he could be out for a couple of weeks.
News: The Buffalo Bills' defensive backfield is suddenly depleted by injuries following a 27-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin did not return after aggravating an ankle injury in the first half. Also unable to finish were starting safeties Donte Whitner, who hurt his thumb, and Bryan Scott, who also hurt his ankle in the second half. Without providing details, coach Dick Jauron would only say the players were being evaluated.
Analysis: Whitner managed five tackles against the Saints and now has 23 takedowns in three games. He has been a good playmaker thus far and might return to his 100-tackle ways. He has not reached that level since his rookie season in 2006. However, he has to stay healthy to make it there. Whitner is a decent No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy DB when healthy.
News: With the help of an opportunistic defensive effort led by safety Donte Whitner, the Bills put aside the lingering frustrations that followed last week's season-opening 25-24 loss to New England in which Buffalo squandered an 11-point lead in the final 2:06. Whitner also recorded eight tackles in Week 2's 33-20 win over the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Whitner has recorded 18 total tackles in the first two weeks of the season and also returned an interception for a TD, which isn't too bad. Think about picking Whitner up as a No. 3 Fantasy option in IDP formats.
News: Buffalo LB Keith Ellison put on a tackling display on Monday night in a loss at the New England Patriots. Ellison made tackle after tackle and finished with 15 on the night. Donte Whitner finished with 10.
Analysis: Ellison is owned in 0 percent of Fantasy leagues so clearly he isn't getting much recognition in Fantasy IDP leagues. Still, 15 tackles is special. You need to start thinking about him if he plays this well Week 2 against the Buccaneers. Whitner is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB in Week 2.
News: The disorderly conduct case against Buffalo Bills DB Donte Whitner has been pushed back to July 31, but won't interfere with his preseason workouts. Whitner appeared in Cleveland Municipal Court on Friday on allegations of trying to force his way past officers dealing with a crowd outside a nightclub in April. He's charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Whitner's attorney, Larry Zukerman, told Judge Angela Stokes that both sides were involved in talks about a plea deal. With the agreement of the defense and prosecution, the judge said Whitner could skip next month's hearing because of preseason workouts.
Analysis: Whitner is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB at best this year He's worth a late-round pick in IDP leagues depending on what happens with the case.
News: Bills defensive back Donte Whitner has been formally charged with aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest for his role in an altercation outside a Cleveland nightclub early Saturday. Police handcuffed and used a stun gun on the 23-year-old Whitner outside the House of Blues after he forced his way past them and then broke free from officers. Whitner was taken to jail and released later pending formal charges. No court date has been set but Whitner will make an initial appearance in the next two weeks.
Analysis: For the third straight year, Whitner's production sank, especially his tackle totals. He had just 61 total. Whitner also had one sack, a pass defensed and one fumble recovery -- not good totals for a guy expected to be a Fantasy asset. Why the bad results? It might be because he missed three games during the year with a shoulder injury and began the season with a tweaked ankle and dealt with the injuries all year. A healthier Whitner should do better, but he should see a suspension for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy. As a result, consider him a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB at best, aiming for him with a late-round pick.
News: Bills defensive back Donte Whitner was shocked with a stun gun and arrested by officers trying to control a rowdy crowd outside a Cleveland nightclub early Saturday, police said. Whitner was jailed for aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Lt. Thomas Stacho said. "It's not how I wish to conduct myself, and I apologize to all those involved," he said in a statement released through his agent, Neil Cornrich.

News: Bills DB Donte Whitner led the team with 10 tackles in Week 15's loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Whitner has 56 tackles on the season with just one sack and no picks. Whitner is just a low-end Fantasy DB for IDP leagues and should not be active in Week 16 at Denver.
News: Bills starting strong safety Donte Whitner (separated shoulder) and TE Robert Royal (hamstring) are both questionable for Week 14 vs. Miami.
Analysis: Whitner is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB that fits into lineups in deeper formats when healthy while Royal isn't productive enough to be anything more than a No. 3 Fantasy TE. Consider both extremely weak options in Week 14.
News: With the Bills playing a huge game in Toronto vs. the Dolphins in Week 14, it looks like they're getting some reinforcements. Bills DE Aaron Schobel (foot) and FS Donte Whitner (shoulder) practiced in full on Wednesday and are considered candidates to make their respective returns to the field for Sunday's game. Schobel has missed seven games and Whitner has missed three. Elsewhere for the Bills, CB Jabari Greer missed practiced with his knee injury and DE Chris Kelsay had the day off.
Analysis: Schobel would fit the bill as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DL for this week, his first game back. He might have been dropped in your IDP league, so check to see if you can grab him since he could rack up a couple of sacks in any given week. Whitner is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB that fits into lineups in deeper formats. Greer and Kelsay are no better than low-end desperation pickups.
News: The Bills have announced the inactives for their Week 13 game vs. San Francisco. Not in uniform: QB Gibram Hamdan (third QB), SS Donte Whitner (shoulder), CB Jabari Greer (knee), LB Teddy Lehman (hamstring), TE Robert Royal (hamstring), DE Aaron Schobel (foot) and DE Copeland Bryan (foot).
Analysis: Schobel, Whitner and Greer have some value in IDP formats, but Whitner and Greer were both declared out earlier this week, so hopefully you made alternate plans. Royal can be a decent emergency TE when healthy, but he's been out a couple of weeks now.
News: Bills starting cornerback Jabari Greer won't play because of injury when Buffalo hosts the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Greer's right knee was injured against Cleveland two weeks ago and he'll miss his second straight game. Starting strong safety Donte Whitner, who's nursing a separated shoulder, is doubtful. Whitner has missed two of the last three games since hurting the shoulder against the New York Jets in Week 9. Terrence McGee and Leodis McKelvin are expected to start against the Niners.
Analysis: McGee and McKelvin make for interesting Fantasy options -- they were not only effective last week against the Chiefs, but they'll be asked to make big plays again vs. the Niners' aggressive passing offense. Consider both No. 3 DB options for Week 13 Fantasy play. Greer and Whitner should remain benched or on the waiver wire.
News: Bills safety Donte Whitner, who missed two of the past three games with a separated right shoulder, practiced for a second straight day Thursday. He is questionable for Week 13 against San Francisco.
Analysis: Consider Whitner a low-end DB in IDP leagues. Hopefully he can return against the 49ers.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner returned to practice Wednesday, creating the chance the Bills' defensive leader will be ready to play against San Francisco in Week 13. Coach Dick Jauron said he'll have a better idea of Whitner's status after the team practices in pads on Thursday.
Analysis: Whitner missed a 54-31 win at Kansas City last weekend and has been in action for only two quarters over the past three games since separating his right shoulder in a 26-17 loss to the New York Jets on Nov. 2. He has some low-end Fantasy appeal in IDP leagues, but keep an eye on his status this week before activating him.
News: Bills starting safety Donte Whitner and starting cornerback Jabari Greer won't play because of injuries when Buffalo travels to Kansas City to play the Chiefs in Week 12. Whitner, who missed the second half of Buffalo's Monday night loss to Cleveland, is nursing a right shoulder separated against the Jets on Nov. 2. Greer, meanwhile, hurt his right knee in the Browns game. Buffalo's secondary might be even further depleted if Whitner's replacement, Bryan Scott, can't play. Scott is questionable because of a left knee injury sustained against the Browns. Rookie Leodis McKelvin will likely start in place of Greer, while George Wilson would start at strong safety if Scott is unable to go.
Analysis: Unless you're considering Terrence McGee, the only healthy starting defensive back in Buffalo, steer clear of all Bills DBs in Week 12. Only Whitner is worth holding on to in deeper formats.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner's return didn't last long after he missed one game with a separated right shoulder. Whitner sat out the second half Week 11 against the Browns after his shoulder felt sore. He finished with three tackles.
Analysis: Whitner is a solid NFL cornerback, but he doesn't do enough statistically to matter in most Fantasy IDP leagues. Don't bother with him, especially in light of this injury.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner is active and will play Week 11 against the Browns even though the Bills listed him as questionable with a separated shoulder.
Analysis: Whitner is a solid NFL cornerback, but he doesn't do enough statistically to matter in most Fantasy IDP leagues. Start him if you have him, but treat him as a low-end option.
News: Bills starting defensive end Aaron Schobel (foot) will miss his fifth game, while starting strong safety Donte Whitner hopes to play despite being listed as questionable. Whitner's been nursing a separated shoulder since Buffalo's loss to the Jets two weeks ago. He missed his first game of the season last week in a loss to New England. "I'm feeling good," Whitner said after Friday's practice. "We'll see how it goes. I expect to play, and I want to play, but it's up to (the coaches and trainers). It depends on how I progress over the next two days."
Analysis: Continue to sit (or cut) Schobel while using Whitner as a No. 3 Fantasy DB if he's active for Week 11.
News: The Bills inactives for Week 10 at New England include QB Gibran Hamdan, DB Donte Whitner, RB Xavier Omon, LB Teddy Lehman, WR Josh Reed and DL Aaron Schobel.
Analysis: Keep Reed, Whitner and Schobel reserved in all leagues for Week 10. Lehman, Hamdan and Omon have minimal Fantasy value even when healthy.
News: Bills starting defensive end Aaron Schobel (foot), starting strong safety Donte Whitner (separated shoulder) and nickel back Ashton Youboty (plantar fasciitis) have all been ruled out for Buffalo's Week 10 game at New England. Whitner will be missing his first game since hurting his shoulder in last week's loss to the New York Jets. Schobel and Youboty have both missed four straight games.
Analysis: Bryan Scott will replace Whitner, while either rookies Reggie Corner or Leodis McKelvin will assume Youboty's slot in the secondary. Ryan Denney will take Schobel's spot. None of these Bills are worth using in Week 10, and Whitner is really the only one worth hanging on to in IDP leagues since there's no guarantee that Schobel will return this season.
News: Bills safety Donte Whitner has a separated right shoulder and isn't likely to play Sunday at New England. Bills coach Dick Jauron said Monday that Whitner's status is week to week after he was hurt in the second half Sunday against the Jets. Whitner was the Bills' first-round draft pick in 2006 out of Ohio State.
Analysis: When healthy, Whitner is no better than a No. 3 Fantasy DB. Consider other options if you've been relying on Whitner this season.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner made only two tackles in a Week 8 loss to Miami and has only five tackles over his last three games. He has yet to make an interception this season.
Analysis: Whitner had some value as a low-end starting DB, but he's hardly done anything this season. There are better options in Week 9, when Buffalo hosts the Jets.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner converted four tackles in Week 4 at St. Louis, including a sack.
Analysis: Whitner has some value as a low-end starting DB. Don't count on him for regular sacks, but he can pick up a decent amount of tackles, some interceptions and passes defensed.
News: Notable Bills defenders from Week 3 vs. Oakland include: LB Paul Posluszny (six total tackles, fumble recovery), DL Chris Kelsay (two solo tackles, sack, forced fumble), FS Donte Whitner (five total tackles) and DE Aaron Schobel (four solo tackles).
Analysis: All of these defenders are worth using on a regular basis in IDP leagues. The Bills play at the Rams in Week 4.
News: Bills DB Ashton Youboty led his team with eight tackles in their Week 1 win over the Seahawks. Also contributing were DB Donte Whitner (six tackles), DL Marcus Stroud (six tackles, half a sack) and LB Paul Posluszny (six tackles).
Analysis: Posluszny is a No. 2 Fantasy LB in IDP play, while Whitner has some value as a low-end starting DB. Youboty and Stroud have minimal value.
News: Buffalo DB Donte Whitner, listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Steelers, played and intercepted a pass from Pittsburgh starter Ben Roethlisberger. Whitner also picked up two tackles.
Analysis: Whitner had 89 total tackles (68 solo), added one interception and one fumble recovery in 2007, his second season in the NFL. Whitner heads into the 2008 season as a low-end Fantasy DB with solid upside.
News: Bills starting strong safety Donte Whitner returned to practice Monday after missing all of last week with a sore left ankle. Whitner, however, was hurt a half-hour into the session when he was kneed in the back of the calf. He was held out for the remainder of practice for precautionary reasons.
Analysis: Whitner had 89 total tackles (68 solo), added one interception and one fumble recovery in 2007, his second season in the NFL. As soon as he gets over one minor injury, another one strikes. The good news is that it's not serious and Whitner should be ready for the season. Whitner heads into the 2008 season as a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Buffalo DB Donte Whitner didn't make the trip to Washington for Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins.
Analysis: Whitner had 89 total tackles (68 solo), which was second on the team, and added one interception and one fumble recovery in 2007, his second season in the NFL. The Bills are downplaying this injury, so let's hope it is nothing major. Whitner heads into the 2008 season as a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: The Buffalo Bills will most likely be without defensive back Donte Whitner for their Aug. 9 preseason opener at Washington, reports the offical Bills Web site. "I would say Donte and Josh [Reed] are probably a long shot," said coach Dick Jauron. "I would be very doubtful about them at this point." Whitner sprained his ankle in practice last Saturday, but didn't feel the effects of the injury until the next day. "I woke up the next morning and it was very, very sore, but I could still walk on it," said Whitner. "Other than that it's no big deal." Whitner hasn't practiced since with Bryan Scott assuming his reps with the first team defense. The good news is Whitner confirmed that the MRI and x-rays taken on his ankle were negative.
Analysis: The Bills strong safety said he could have practiced on the ankle Wednesday if he had to, but with the injury still giving him some discomfort the team's athletic training staff preferred to have him rest it. Whitner had 89 total tackles (68 solo), which was second on the team, and added one interception and one fumble recovery in 2007, his second season in the NFL. The Bills are downplaying this injury, so let's hope it is nothing major. Whitner heads into the 2008 season as a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Bills starting strong safety Donte Whitner was held out of practice Monday because of a minor ankle injury. Jauron didn't disclose the nature of the injury, but said Whitner will have tests as a precaution.
News: Buffalo DB Donte Whitner played well in his second year in the NFL at safety. He had 89 total tackles (68 solo), which was second on the team, and added one interception and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: Whitner now has 193 tackles in his first two seasons in the NFL. He should be considered a No. 3 DB in IDP leagues and is worth drafting in the middle to late rounds in 2008 Fantasy drafts.
News: The Bills listed the following players as inactive for Week 17 at Philadelphia: QB Gibran Hamdan (3rd QB), DB Donte Whitner (illness), RB Shaud Williams (coach's decision), WR Scott Mayle (coach's decision), DL Corey Mace (coach's decision), TE Ryan Neufeld (coach's decision).
Analysis: None of the players on this list are in a position to help Fantasy owners. They should be left on the waiver wire in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Bills starting safety Donte Whitner will miss Buffalo's season finale at Philadelphia on Sunday because of the flu. Whitner did not travel with the team to Philadelphia, the Bills said Saturday. He didn't practice all week because of the illness.
Analysis: This will be the first game Whitner has missed this season. He started the first 15 and had 89 tackles but only one interception. He'll likely enter 2008 as a low-end Fantasy DB. Obviously, you should reserve him for Week 17.
News: Buffalo starting safety Donte Whitner missed his third straight practice Friday because of the flu and is questionable for the Bills' season finale at Philadelphia. Whitner started all 15 games for the Bills this season and is third on the team with 102 tackles.
Analysis: Whitner should be OK to play, but be safe and check in with us an hour before kickoff to learn his official status. When healthy, he's a decent No. 3 Fantasy DB.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner missed his second straight practice Thursday because of the flu, leaving his status uncertain to play in Buffalo's season finale at Philadelphia on Sunday. Coach Dick Jauron said Whitner, who's head is congested, was feeling "a little better" on Thursday and hoped he can practice Friday. Whitner ranks third on the team with 102 tackles in 15 starts this season.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Whitner's status prior to setting your lineup, but he should play in Week 17 at Philly. Whitner is a No. 3 DB in IDP leagues when healthy.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner sat out Wednesday's practice with an undisclosed illness as his team prepares for its Week 17 game at Philadelphia.
Analysis: We suspect Whitner will have overcome his illness by Sunday. He remains a low-end Fantasy DB due to his lack of interceptions.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner had five tackles Sunday at Cleveland.
Analysis: Whitner is a low-end DB in IDP leagues and is only worth using in deeper formats in Week 16 against the Giants.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner picked off Cleo Lemon in the second quarter of Buffalo's 38-17 victory over the Dolphins in Week 14. It was his first pick of the season and the second of his two-year career. He tied for a team-high with six tackles.
Analysis: Whitner is a low-end Fantasy DB as he doesn't make enough plays in the secondary to be worth starting on a consistent basis in IDP leagues. Leave him alone for Week 15's game at Cleveland.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner (illness) did not practice Thursday as the team prepares for Week 14 vs. Miami. Whitner, who missed his first practice all season, has 72 tackles and one forced fumble in 12 games.
Analysis: Whitner had some hip troubles during the preseason, but has not been bothered by the injury this season. He is having a solid second season in the NFL, but is merely a low-end Fantasy DB because he doesn't have any interceptions or sacks. He likely came down with a cold or stomach flu and is not expected to miss Week 14, but stay tuned for further news.
News: Bills DB Terrence McGee (nine tackles), DB Donte Whitner (four tackles), DL Ryan Denney (four tackles) and DB Ashton Youboty (sack) led the way defensively in Buffalo's 36-14 loss to the Jaguars in Week 12.
Analysis: McGee and Whitner have some Fantasy value as low-end reserves in IDP leagues, but are part of a poor unit in Buffalo and should certainly not be starting in Week 13 against the Redskins.
News: DB Terrence McGee (seven tackles, two passes defended), LB John DiGiorgio (seven tackles), LB Angelo Crowell (six tackles), DB George Wilson (six tackles), DL Ryan Denney (five tackles) and DB Donte Whitner (four tackles) all chipped in as Buffalo defeated the Dolphins 13-10 in Week 10.
Analysis: McGee and Crowell are nice backup Fantasy DBs in IDP formats, while DiGiorgio and Whitner have minimal Fantasy value in deeper lesgues as No. 3 or No. 4 options at their positions. None of these players should be starting in Week 11 against the superb Patriots offense.
News: Bills DB George Wilson (six tackles, pass defended), DB Jabari Greer (five tackles, forced fumble) and DB Dante Whitner (four tackles) all helped out in Buffalo's 33-21 victory over the Bengals in Week 9.
Analysis: Whitner has minimal value as a backup Fantasy DB in IDP leagues, while Whitner and Greer are not worth owning in any format. The Bills travel to Miami in Week 10.
News: The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports that Bills DB Donte Whitner will move over from SS to take injured Jim Leonhard's FS spot for Buffalo's Week 5 game vs. Dallas. Newcomer Bryan Scott will take Whitner's spot at SS.
Analysis: Whitner doesn't grab many interceptions, but his tackling ability makes him a capable low-end Fantasy DB in IDP leagues. Hopefully the move to FS won't diminish his stats, but see how he does vs. the Cowboys before making any move involving him.
News: Notable Bills defensive performers from Week 2 at Pittsburgh include: FS Donte Whitner (eight total tackles), LB Paul Posluszny (12 total tackles), DB Jim Leonhard (seven total tackles, interception), DE Aaron Schobel (two tackles, sack) and Angelo Crowell (seven total hits).
Analysis: All of these players except Leonhard should be considered in Week 3 Fantasy IDP league play when the Bills play at New England.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner (hip) returned to action during Friday's preseason game against the Falcons. He had five tackles -- all solo -- and led the team in tackles.
Analysis: Whitner is coming off a solid rookie season in which he racked up 104 tackles, but had just one interception. Playing at safety the interceptions might not always be there. But Whitner still remains a valuable Fantasy IDP player in leagues that reward heavily for tackles.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Bills DE Aaron Schobel (hamstring) and Donte Whitner (hamstring) sat out the preseason opener at New Orleans but are expected to play Friday at home against Atlanta.
Analysis: Whitner is coming off a solid rookie season in which he racked up 104 tackles, but had just one interception. Playing at safety, the interceptions might not always be there. But Whitner still remains a valuable Fantasy IDP player in leagues that reward heavily for tackles. As for Schobel, the guy is a proven sack machine who will help in other categories as well. Continue to view him as a No. 1 Fantasy DL.
News: Bills safety Donte Whitner (hip) sat out Friday's preseason game against the Saints. Although, he did return to practice on Wednesday.
Analysis: Whitner is coming off a solid rookie season in which he racked up 104 tackles, but had just one interception. Playing at safety the interceptions might not always be there. But Whitner still remains a valuable Fantasy IDP player in leagues that reward heavily for tackles.
News: Bills safety Donte Whitner returned to practice Wednesday night, but could miss Buffalo's preseason opener at New Orleans Friday because of a strained hip. Whitner, who was hurt Monday, was held out of most team drills as a precaution. "It's a little sore, so we'll just wait on that and see how that goes," coach Dick Jauron said.
Analysis: Whitner is coming off a solid rookie season in which he racked up 104 tackles, but had just one interception. Playing at safety the interceptions might not always be there. But Whitner still remains a valuable Fantasy IDP player in leagues that reward heavily for tackles.
News: Bills rookie starting strong safety Donte Whitner was added to the injury report on Thursday, listed as probable after he sprained a toe in practice Wednesday. Whitner missed practice Thursday, but Jauron was confident the injury was not serious.
Analysis: It looks as though Whitner will play Sunday and can be used as a low-end Fantasy DB. He will probably be a popular pick in IDP leagues in 2007 seeing how he is a candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year this season.
News: Notable Bills defenders from Week 16 include: FS Donte Whitner (14 total tackles), LB London Fletcher-Baker (seven total tackles) and DE Aaron Schobel (four total tackles, sack).
Analysis: These players should be used in IDP league play at Baltimore in Week 17.
News: The Bills gave up 30 points and 396 total yards in a Week 16 loss to the Titans. They forced no turnovers, but DL Aaron Schobel did pick up his 14th sack of the season. DB Donte Whitner led all tacklers with 14.
Analysis: Consider the Bills DST a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17 against the Ravens. Schobel remains a solid Fantasy DL and will likely be a high-round pick in IDP leagues next season. Whitner will probably also be drafted in 2007.
News: The Bills DST shutout the Dolphins 21-0 with one sack and two interceptions. LB London Fletcher-Baker had 10 tackles. LB Keith Ellison had eight tackles and an interception. LB Takeo Spikes had six tackles. DB Nate Clements had an interception. DL Aaron Schobel had three tackles and a sack. DB Terrence McGee had six tackles. DB Donte Whitner had seven tackles. DL Chris Kelsay had three tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Bills DST a low-end No. 1 option for Week 16 against Tennessee and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: Bills LB Takeo Spikes (ankle, knee), SS Donte Whitner (hamstring), CB Terrence McGee (ankle) and LB John DiGiorgio (high ankle sprain) are listed as questionable for Week 15 vs. Miami. Spikes and DiGiorgio did not practice on Wednesday, but Whitner and McGee practiced "some" said coach Dick Jauron, reports BuffaloBills.com
Analysis: Spikes is a good No. 3 Fantasy LB when healthy, McGee is a good No. 3 CB when healthy and Whitner is a fringe options in all IDP leagues (and should be salvaged on keeper league rosters). DiGiorgio shouldn't be on Fantasy rosters.
News: Donte Whitner (hamstring) was inactive for Week 14 at N.Y. Jets.
Analysis: Whitner is worth a look in IDP leagues for Week 15 against Miami if he is healthy, but wait until later in the week and check back on his health status.
News: Bills starting strong safety Donte Whitner missed his second day of practice Friday because of a hamstring injury and remains questionable for Week 14 against the Jets. Whitner hurt his hamstring at practice Thursday and was limping along the sidelines during Friday's workout. Coach Dick Jauron called Whitner a "gametime decision." If Whitner can't go, veteran reserve Matt Bowen would likely take over at strong safety.
Analysis: Whitner should probably be benched this week whether he plays or not since his hamstring could prevent him from running at full strength. Bowen would be at best a No. 3 Fantasy DB in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner hurt his hamstring in practice Thursday, leaving the Buffalo Bills potentially minus another defensive starter when they play the New York Jets this weekend. Coach Dick Jauron listed Whitner as questionable after the first-round draft pick was hurt early in practice. "It's worrisome, but it's just part of the deal," Jauron said. "And if he's not up, then somebody else will come up and play." Whitner described the injury as "a tweak." He added he expected to return to practice Friday and should be ready to play Sunday.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Whitner's status before putting him in your lineup. He should be considered a No. 2 DB in IDP leagues.
News: The Bills DST recovered one fumble and had two sacks against San Diego. DL Chris Kelsay had three tackles and recovered a fumble. DB Nate Clements had seven tackles. DL Aaron Schobel had four tackles and a sack. DL Ryan Denney had three tackles and a sack. LB Takeo Spikes had nine tackles. LB London Fletcher-Baker had seven tackles. DB Donte Whitner had seven tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Bills a No. 2 DST option for Week 14 against the Jets. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: The Bills DST held the Colts to 17 points. LB Angelo Crowell had 13 tackles and forced a fumble. LB London Fletcher-Baker had 14 tackles. DL Aaron Schobel had two tackles and forced a fumble. DB Terrence McGee had six tackles and recovered a fumble. He also had four kickoff returns for an average of 36.8 yards and a long of 88. DL Chris Kelsay had three tackles. LB Takeo Spikes had nine tackles. DB Nate Clements had five tackles. DB Donte Whitner had four tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Bills DST a good sleeper for Week 11 against Houston and use all regular IDP players.
News: Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner faces a harassment charge after an alleged domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Whitner was arrested in the Buffalo suburb of Hamburg last Saturday after police were called to his home in response to a fight with a woman, police said. He was arraigned on the violation and released on his own recognizance. Whitner declined comment after practicing with the team Thursday. Whitner is due in court Nov. 20. Hamburg Town Prosecutor Dennis Gaughan said the non-criminal offense is punishable by 15 days in jail and a fine of up to $250
Analysis: According to NFL bylaws, Whitner might be forced to sit out a few games. Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said in a statement the team was aware of the charge and was gathering the facts. "The National Football league has a personal conduct policy that governs these types of situations and the Buffalo Bills will adhere to that policy if there is any truth to the accusation," Berchtold said. Whatever the case, Whitner is expected to play Sunday against the Colts. Whitner has played extremely well in his rookie season and will probably be up for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors at the end of the season. He is a solid No. 3 Fantasy DB on most occassions.
News: Bills DB Donte Whitner had five tackles against the Patriots.
Analysis: Whitner is a good No. 3 DB in all IDP leagues. The Bills are off in Week 8 and face Green Bay in Week 9.
News: The Buffalo Bills defense had a tough time in Week 6 stopping the Lions offense giving up 397 total yards and 20 points. The Bills were able to come up with three sacks and one interception, but it just wasn't enough as the Lions won 20-17. DB Donte Whitner led everyone with eight tackles, while London Fletcher-Baker, Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay all had sacks. Ko Simpson got the team's lone interception.
Analysis: The Bills defense played better in Week 6 than they did in Week 5 as the Bears ripped dropped 40 points on them. Still, the Bills DST is at best a bye-week replacement heading into Week 7, where they play the Patriots. Whitner and Fletcher-Baker are decent Fantasy IDP options on a weekly basis, while Schobel and Kelsay should be used more in bye-week replacement situations.
News: In Week 5 play at Chicago, Bills rookie SS Ko Simpson totaled 11 tackles while teammate Donte Whitner has eight solo hits and LB London Fletcher had nine total tackles. LB Angelo Crowell and DE Aaron Schobel each had a sack.
Analysis: All of these players are useful in deeper Fantasy leagues, whereas Fletcher and Schobel are better in regular IDP leagues. Watch for Simpson and Whitner in keeper leagues -- both should be fantastic in those kind of formats.
News: According to BuffaloBills.com, S Donte Whitner was named NFL Rookie of the Month for his play in September. In three games, Whitner had 18 tackles and one interception.
Analysis: Many thought that the Bills reached by drafting Whitner No. 8 overall out of Ohio State in April's draft. In just one month though Whitner has made the Bills look great. Still consider him a No. 2 or No. 3 DB in IDP formats, but his future looks bright.
News: Bills SS Donte Whitner, the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, may not start Sunday but he will see a lot of action. The Patriots have two of the league's top tight ends in Ben Watson and Daniel Graham and usually have two on the field at the same time. "I expect to be tested," Whitner said. "Every team we play I'll be tested. These are the best players in the world. They'll make some plays, you'll make some plays. The thing is keep coming back and make it a fight to the end."
Analysis: The Bills DST is not a recommended start this week against the Patriots.
News: The Bills' official website noted that Donte Whitner led the Bills with four tackles and one assisted tackle against Carolina Saturday. He was their first-round pick this spring and is expected to emerge as their starter at strong safety. He held out for eight days before signing. He has to beat out Matt Bowen for the job, but the latter injured his right leg early in the second quarter. X-rays were negative.
Analysis: Fantasy owners in IDP leagues should target Whitner as a No. 2 or 3 DB because he should rack up tackles and have a fair hand in a number of passes defended and interceptions. If Bowen holds him off for the job, he's just worth picking up late in IDP drafts, since he's likely just a placeholder until Whitner is ready. The Bills DST is still a risky one as a starting Fantasy unit, but you could do worse for a backup.
News: Rookie safety Donte Whitner finally signed with the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The next step is seeing how quickly the No. 8 draft pick can begin competing for a starting job. "I'm a little behind," Whitner acknowledged after signing a five-year deal and joining the team at its training camp site in suburban Rochester. "But once I get in, I'll be a quick learner."
Analysis: He'll have to be because Whitner has plenty of catching up to do after missing the first eight days of camp, and with the Bills' preseason opener at Carolina on Aug. 12 fast approaching. The former Ohio State star had been the top drafted player still unsigned and only one of three first-round selections not under contract. Whitner was a quality DB in college but will have a lot to live up to following the high selection. Whitner may also be able to play cornerback, but is looks like he will replace Lawyer Milloy in the secondary. He is not a recommended Fantasy IDP option in 2006 and is a middle-round pick in dynasty keeper leagues.
News: The Bills made the only surprise pick in the first round, selecting Ohio State safety Donte Whitner with the eighth overall pick. GM Marv Levy told Sirius NFL Radio in an interview that Whitner was very high on the Bills' depth chart, and even though they had some offers to move down, they feared losing him and had to take him with the high pick.
