News: The Raiders spent four draft picks on the defense: San Diego State linebacker Miles Burris, Penn State defensive end Jack Crawford, Georgia State defensive end Christo Bilukidi and Penn State linebacker Nathan Stupar. Also recently, the team saw safety Tyvon Branch sign his one-year franchise tender, meaning that he's back for 2012.
Analysis: The rookie additions will provide depth but the Branch news is the most important here. The Raiders' secondary could be in for some long games given that they've signed three new corners (Shawntae Spencer, Ronald Bartell and Pat Lee) to go with their young ballhawks. There might not be a quality defender in the bunch. Tack on a run defense that still doesn't look to be improved, and teams might romp on the Raiders. Even with gobs of potential from their kick and punt return units, the Raiders DST has fallen out of consideration for a draft pick in Fantasy formats.
News: With speculation pointing to Reggie McKenzie hiring one of his former colleagues in Green Bay to be his first head coach, he instead turned to 39-year-old Dennis Allen, who had only one year of experience as a defensive coordinator in Denver and had never been a head coach at any level. He starts his first head coaching job in Oakland with the task of turning around a franchise that has gone nine consecutive seasons without a winning record or a playoff berth while going through a revolving door of head coaches. Allen is the seventh head coach for the Raiders since 2003.
Analysis: The Raiders are also coming off one of their worst defensive seasons ever. Oakland had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history. But Allen did a nice job turning around the Broncos defense in one season and should be in a position to help the Raiders turn things around in 2012. Consider the Raiders DST a deep sleeper for Fantasy purposes right now.
News: The Raiders formally agreed Thursday on a four-year deal to make Denver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen their new head coach. New general manager Reggie McKenzie had decided Tuesday to hire Allen to replace the fired Hue Jackson as head coach. The Raiders have gone nine straight seasons without a winning record or a playoff berth, just missing out on the AFC West title on tiebreakers with an 8-8 record last season. The 39-year-old Allen will be the first new Raiders coach to come from the defensive side of the ball since late owner Al Davis hired linebackers coach John Madden in 1969. The Raiders are coming off one of their worst defensive seasons ever. Oakland had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history.
Analysis: In his first season as coordinator in Denver, Allen helped the Broncos improve from allowing a league-worst 29.4 points and 390.8 yards per game to ranking 20th in yards (357.8) and 24th in points (24.4) this season on the way to an AFC West title. He'll help a Raiders unit that has potential but isn't quite worth trusting in Fantasy play just yet.
News: The Raiders had a hard time slowing down the Chargers in Week 17. Oakland gave up 463 yards of total offense, including 310 through the air, in the 38-26 loss. San Diego QB Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns and their running backs combined for 153 yards and a score. The Raiders caused one turnover in the defeat, with DB Matt Giordano picking off Rivers in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Raiders had a down campaign on the defensive side of the ball and missed WR Jacoby Ford on special teams, as he missed several games due to injury. While their defensive line can put pressure on opposing QBs, Oakland needs to get more reliable in the secondary if they plan on winning more games. Keep an eye on what they do in the offseason but plan on targeting the Raiders DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day.
News: The Raiders secondary will have their hands full when they take on the Chargers in Week 17. San Diego ranks sixth in the league in passing, putting up over 274 yards per game, and ranks 17th in rushing. Oakland ranks 25th and 27th against the pass and run, respectively. When the division foes met earlier in the year, the Raiders gave up 314 yards of total offense.
Analysis: The Raiders have recorded 39 sacks thus far with 17 interceptions and two DST scores. While they did a solid job against San Diego earlier in the year, Oakland has not been playing that well of late and continue to give up yardage on defense. Sunday's matchup could end up being a shootout so consider the Raiders DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: The Raiders DST didn't do much Saturday at Kansas City in Week 16 with no sacks or fumble recoveries in a 16-13 victory in overtime. But the Raiders did get two interceptions. On special teams, Bryan McCann led the way with three kickoff returns for 150 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is a low-end Fantasy option in the majority of leagues. Don't plan on using them in most formats in Week 17 against San Diego.
News: The Raiders DST enters Week 16 at Kansas City facing a team that just beat the Green Bay Packers for the first time all season. The Chiefs made the Packers DST look embarrassed last Sunday and could do the same against the Raiders DST. In fact, the Chiefs might be playing their best football this instant. The Raiders DST played K.C. Week 7 and allowed 300 yards and 16 points en route to managing just four Fantasy points with two turnovers forced and no sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders DST struggled the last time they played Kansas City and the Chiefs are better this time around. The Raiders DST has had three straight poor performances and has allowed at least 28 points in three consecutive games. The Raiders DST has not been playing well and Kansas City has. The Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 16.
News: The Raiders defense struggled to contain the Lions passing game in Week 15, and ended up losing 28-27 on a last-minute touchdown drive which heavily featured WR Calvin Johnson. On the Lions game-winning drive, Johnson caught a 48-yard pass, beating S Jerome Boyd and LB Rolando McClain as the Raiders played zone. It isnt a scheme issue, Hue Jackson said. The balls laying up in the air. You gotta go make that play. Their guy made it and we didnt. So they won the game. The Lions had 432 yards of total offense and scored 28 points. The Raiders forced just one turnover, but they did make it count, with a fumble that Aaron Curry picked up for a 6-yard return touchdown.
Analysis: The Raiders got a boost from Curry's touchdown, which salvaged what could have been a very ugly game for them from a Fantasy standpoint. They had just two sacks in the game, and gave up 391 yards through the air. While they did manage to avoid giving up 30 points for the third-straight game, it wasn't by a large margin. The Raiders are going through a very rough stretch, but they do get a reprieve in Week 16, as they take on the NFL's second-worst scoring offense, the Chiefs. It's a must-win for the Raiders, so they should be ready to take advantage of the matchup. Despite that, they are still likely no better than a No. 2 Fantasy DST unit for Week 16.
News: The Raiders might rank 26th in total defense, but Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he sees a talented defense on tape. You look at their depth chart, and its about as good as anybodys in the NFL, Stafford said. They may not be (ranked) high in yards per game or points per game, but theyre high in sacks and interceptions, and theyre a playmaking defense. Despite the high praise from their Week 15 opponent, the Raiders have reached a nadir as a unit over the last two games. They have allowed a combined 80 points the past two games, and things wont be much easier against Detroit, as the Lions are the fourth highest scoring team in the league.
Analysis: Stafford threw nine interceptions in a three-game stretch from Week 10-12, but over the last two weeks he appears to have solved that problem while passing for a combined 587 games and one interception in that stretch. If Stafford is careful with the ball, the Raiders could really struggle as a unit. Staffords turnover problems are just about the only thing that can keep Detroit from being an elite offense, as opposing DST units have been held below seven Fantasy points per-game on average in the 10 games in which Stafford has thrown one or no picks. Dont look to the Raiders as anything more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST unit in Week 15.
News: The Raiders gave up a ton of points and yardage to the Packers in Week 14 but they were able to rack of some stats of their own. Oakland posted four sacks, picked QB Aaron Rodgers off once and also recorded a safety. However, Green Bay put up 391 yards of total offense in beating the Raiders 46-16. Oakland's safety came in the fourth quarter when LB Rolando McClain sacked backup QB Matt Flynn in the end zone.
Analysis: The Raiders have given up 30-plus points in back-to-back games as their secondary has been getting torched of late. While their front-seven has been playing better, they cannot get enough consistent pressure on opposing QBs. Oakland could be in trouble again with the Lions up next on the schedule so consider their DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 15.
News: The Raiders will be facing a Packers team in Week 14 that they do not match up well against. Green Bay sports the third-best passing attack in the NFL, putting up nearly 309 yards per game, and rank 29th in rushing. Oakland ranks 17th and 28th against the pass and run, respectively. The Raiders have recorded 33 sacks thus far with 14 interceptions and one DST score.
Analysis: Oakland gave up 362 total yards of offense to the Dolphins a week ago and as Fantasy owners know, the Packers have a much more potent offense. Green Bay, who enters Sunday undefeated, is averaging 35 points per game while the Raiders are giving up nearly 26 points per contest. QB Aaron Rodgers should be able to throw all over the Raiders in Week 14 so plan on ignoring their DST in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Dolphins dominated the Raiders, 34-14, in Week 13, and as a result, the Raiders DST gave Fantasy owners little to be happy about. They yielded 362 yards to the Dolphins offense, and for the first time in four weeks, the Raiders DST did not force a single turnover. Dolphins QB Matt Moore had plenty of protection all afternoon, and he was sacked only one time.
Analysis: The Dolphins' offense had their way with the Raiders' defense for much of the game, and it shows in the DST's meager production. Things don't figure to get much better, as the Raiders' next opponent are the high-scoring Packers. Owners in nearly all formats should plan on passing over the Raiders DST in Week 14.
News: The Raiders DST hasn't had much luck keeping offenses from rolling up yardage in recent weeks, but they have been helping out Fantasy owners with turnovers. Over the last two weeks, the Raiders have netted six interceptions as well as a forced fumble. In Week 13, they will face the Dolphins, who have been very careful with the football. Their 15 turnovers rank as the ninth-lowest total in the league.
Analysis: The Dolphins are not one of the league's more potent offenses, but QB Matt Moore has been on a roll lately. When you add in the Dolphins' tendency to hold onto the ball, there are few reasons to start the Raiders DST in standard formats. For Week 13, there are no more than a No. 2 DST option.
News: The Raiders defense gave up 400 yards of total offense in Week 12, but still managed to put up a good Fantasy line in their 25-20 victory over the Bears. Facing QB Caleb Hanie in his first career start, the Raiders harassed him all game, sacking him four times while picking off three first half passes. LB Kamerion Wimbley nearly made it a monster day, as he picked off a Hanie pass late in the second half and took it back 73 yards before being dragged down at the Chicago 12-yard line.
Analysis: The Raiders give up a lot of yards, but have been a decent Fantasy unit because of their propensity for causing turnovers and their ability to pressure the quarterback. That was just the recipe for success in Week 12 as well. They face Miami in Week 13 and could be a borderline No. 1 DST as the Dolphins have had their issues offensively in 2011.
News: The Raiders DST has been on a pretty decent run in recent weeks, picking up 11 sacks and four interceptions over the last two weeks heading into their Week 12 matchup against Chicago. This comes at a good time, as they get the opportunity to go at QB Caleb Hanie in his first career NFL start, replacing the injured Jay Cutler.
Analysis: Hanie has extremely limited experience at the NFL level, with just 14 passing attempts during the regular season. Given the Bears' struggles in recent years protecting the QB, the Raiders have an opportunity to go after Hanie and try to make his life miserable in Week 12. The Bears are sure to lean heavily on RB Matt Forte in this matchup, which could pose problems for Oakland. The Raiders allow 152 all-purpose yards per game to opposing RBs and Matt Forte is one of the best backs in the league both on the ground and through the air. Consider them a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 12 as they will look to stack the box to stop Forte and force Hanie to make them pay.
News: The Raiders defense, which had allowed less than 20 points in three of its previous four games, wasn't quite as fortunate Week 11 at Minnesota, giving up 21 points on 311 yards, but it did come through with plenty of big plays. The Raiders intercepted rookie QB Christian Ponder three times and sacked him five times, twice each by DL Tommy Kelly and DL Desmond Bryant. They also recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Raiders entered the game ranked in the lower third of the league against both the run and the pass, yet their defense continues to get the job done in Fantasy. Though the interceptions aren't so common, the Raiders now have 11 sacks in their last two games. The Raiders DST still isn't a unit you can trust as more than a No. 2 Fantasy option against the Bears in Week 12, but it appears to be on the rise.
News: The Raiders have allowed less than 20 points in three of their last four games, giving up 323.5 yards per game during that stretch. They also recorded a season-high six sacks at San Diego last week. Clearly, they have some momentum heading into Week 11 at Minnesota, which they'll need as their 25th-ranked run defense tries to slow down RB Adrian Peterson.
Analysis: Vikings rookie QB Christian Ponder struggled under heavy pressure at Green Bay last week, so you have to figure the Raiders will use a similar approach against him. That means the increase in sacks could continue. Any defense that gives up as many rushing yards as the Raiders do is a risky play in Fantasy, but this matchup is favorable enough that the Raiders DST is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders defense did a solid job of limiting the Chargers potent offense in Week 10. They held San Diego to 314 total yards of offense, including 75 on the ground, in the 24-17 win. Oakland was able to put a ton of pressure on QB Philip Rivers and recorded six sacks. DB Matt Giordano also picked off Rivers in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: The Raiders disrupted Rivers all night on Thursday and held him to 239 yards passing. They also showed much improvement against the run and held a team to fewer than 20 points for the first time since Week 5. Oakland's run defense will be put to the test in Week 11 against RB Adrian Peterson and the Vikings so consider their DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for that matchup.
News: The Raiders will be going up against a potent offense in Week 10 against the Chargers. San Diego sports the fourth-best passing attack in the NFL, putting up nearly 295 yards per game, and rank 16th in run offense. Oakland ranks 20th in the league against the pass and 29th in run defense. The Raiders have recorded 18 sacks thus far with seven interceptions and a defensive/special teams score.
Analysis: The Raiders are giving up an average of 27 points per game so far this season while the Chargers are putting up just under 25 points per contest. Oakland gave up a combined 40 points while beating the division foe twice last year but have not been nearly as impressive on defense in 2011. Fantasy owners that start their DST could be in for a long game on Thursday so consider the Raiders a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 10.
News: Oakland expected RB Willis McGahee to be an integral part to Denver's running game during the teams' Week 9 meeting. The Raiders just didn't expect QB Tim Tebow to be a huge contributor also. Both players scampered for 100-plus rushing yards as the Broncos ran for 298 yards -- its highest total since a 300-yard game against Seattle in 2000 -- and claimed a 38-24 win. The total was the most Oakland has ever allowed to Denver.
Analysis: Tebow did much of his damage with his legs, rushing for a career-high 117 yards on 12 carries on many of the same type of option keepers that made him so successful in college. But he did enough damage with his arm to keep the Raiders honest, throwing touchdowns to WRs Eddie Royal and Eric Decker. Royal also returned a punt 85 yards to break a 24-all tie in the fourth quarter to help the Broncos split the season series with Oakland, which did not force a turnover. Consider Denver a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 10 at Kansas City.
News: After watching Detroit register seven sacks on Denver QB Tim Tebow during a dominating victory last Sunday, the Oakland defense could utilize the same pressure in Week 9. The Raiders, who have used the blitz effectively recently, will certainly look to get in the backfield and cause havoc for Tebow, who threw his first interception of the season in Week 8. Tebow has also been sacked 13 times in his two starts. Oakland is coming off a bye week and have held opponents to 300 total yards or less in each of its past two games.
Analysis: According to STATS, Oakland has been one of the most blitz-heavy teams in the league since Week 5, averaging 24.0 per game. The extra pressure has paid off, as its opponents are completing an NFL-low 35.7 percent of their passes against the blitz. Its just something I truly believe in, Raiders coach Hue Jackson said. I think you have to get after people. If Im going to go down, I want to go down bombing everything." Consider Oakland a solid No. 1 Fantasy DST after the Raiders created three turnovers in the teams' first meeting.
News: The Raiders DST surrendered 28 points on 300 yard of total offense in Week 7 against Kansas City. The unit was gashed a bit on the ground, surrendering 139 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns in the 28-0 contest. Oakland was able to hold Kansas City to just 161 yards through the air and pick off Matt Cassel twice. However, the unit was unable to record a sack and let the Chiefs convert on two of their three trips inside the red zone.
Analysis: Oakland's DST didn't play all that poorly on Sunday, but failed to make any big plays. The unit was stuck on the field for nearly 34 minutes and was really let down by the offense, which committed six turnovers. Now the unit will look to rebound and make some adjustments as they have a bye in Week 8 before Tim Tebow and the Broncos come rolling into town in Week 9. Consider the Raiders a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST most weeks.
News: The Raiders DST will be looking to slow down the Chiefs in Week 7. Kansas City enters Sunday's contest ranked 26th in total offense, averaging 303.6 total yards and 15.4 points per contest. However, Kansas City's offense has been much more efficient of late and has averaged over 350m total yards of offense during their two-game winning streak. The Raiders DST is ranked 16th, in terms of Fantasy points, after racking up 16 sacks and forcing nine turnovers through the first six games of the season.
Analysis: Oakland's defense has been trough to get a read on so far this season. The unit has surrendered a ton of points and yards, but has remained relevant from a Fantasy perspective due to to their ability to rack up sacks and force turnovers. The Raiders now look to have a favorable matchup on Sunday against the Chiefs, who have struggled on offense for much of the season. Raiders DST has recorded double-digit scoring in four of six games and can be considered a low-end No.1 Fantasy option heading into Week 7.
News: The Raiders DST had a pretty big game Week 6 in a win over the Browns. The Raiders DST certainly played a big role in the 24-17 victory as Jacoby Ford returned a kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put the Raiders ahead for good. The DST finished the game having allowed just 268 total yards of offense to the Browns, though they forced just one turnover on a Colt McCoy fumble. McCoy was sacked twice in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders also scored on a fake field goal when punter Shane Lechler threw a 35-yard TD pass to TE Kevin Boss. Unfortunately, the DST does not get credit for that touchdown. They still managed a DTD in the Week 6 game, and has recorded back-to-back solid efforts against Houston and the Browns. The Raiders DST has recorded double-digit scoring in four of six games this season and has become a solid unit most weeks. Facing Kansas City in Week 7, Fantasy owners should feel free starting the Raiders DST as a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: The Raiders DST heads into Week 6 at home against Cleveland having put together three solid games and three duds thus far on the year. Oakland was sharp against Houston in Week 5 as the team forced two Matt Schaub interceptions and sacked him three times. When Oakland gets to the quarterback, the DST plays wells as does the team. Facing the Browns in Week, Colt McCoy better watch his back against the Raiders defense.
Analysis: The Raiders DST should be able to get to McCoy on Sunday of Week 6 if recent history repeats itself. While Cleveland only surrendered three sacks the first three weeks of the season against the Bengals, Colts and Dolphins, Tennessee sacked McCoy four times in Week 4. Oakland's defense should capitalize on that. That said, they've done little outside getting to the quarterback and should be considered just a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for the Week 6 game.
News: The Raiders allowed 20 points in their 25-20 win at Houston in Week 5. They gave up 473 total yards of offense, forcing two turnovers in the game and adding three sacks. They intercepted two Matt Schaub passes.
Analysis: The Raiders continue to be a sub-par defensive unit and a poor option in Fantasy leagues. They have allowed at least 20 points in each of their five games this season and have allowed an average of 422.4 yards per game. They'll be up against a weak Browns offense in Week 6, but are not a recommended play in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Raiders will travel to Houston in Week 5 to take on the Texans. Through the first month of the season, Houston's offense ranks 10th in the NFL in total yardage, averaging 380 yards per game. They rank eighth in scoring, averaging 26.8 points.
Analysis: While the Texans offense is considered above average, it should be noted that the team is very likely going to be without WR Andre Johnson (hamstring). Without Johnson, the Texans will be losing the most important player in their passing game and one of the best scoring threats in the league. On the ground, however, they seem to have recovered a healthy Arian Foster who went for 155 yards and a score last week against Pittsburgh after being limited by a hamstring injury himself. The Raiders remain a very low-end unit for Fantasy purposes and this matchup shouldn't encourage Fantasy owners to take a chance on them this week.
News: The Raiders had a hard time keeping points off the board in Week 4 against the Patriots. Oakland allowed 409 yards of total offense, including 183 on the ground, in the 31-19 loss. QB Tom Brady threw for 226 yards with two touchdowns but had no interceptions and was sacked just once.
Analysis: The Raiders were without some key pieces on defense on Sunday and it showed. While they were able to put some pressure on Brady, the one sack showed how they were unable to finish plays. Oakland could be in for more trouble in Week 5 against the Texans so continue to view the Raiders DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders defense could be in for a long day in Week 4 against the Patriots. New England sports the No. 1 passing offense in the league, putting up over 437 yards per contest, while Oakland ranks 28th against the pass and will be without DB Chris Johnson. Also, the Raiders rank 26th in the NFL against the run while the Patriots average 102.7 yards per game on the ground, good for 13th in the league. The Raiders DST is ranked 22nd, having collected three interceptions with 10 sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders have done a poor job against the pass so far this season but has the front seven to put serious pressure on opposing quarterbacks. That might be their only chance on Sunday if they can put some hits on QB Tom Brady and force him into early throws. But the Patriots have been simply unstoppable through the air this season, and are averaging nearly 35 points per game. Fantasy owners should leave the Raiders DST on the bench for Week 4.
News: Facing one of the top offenses in the AFC, Oakland utilized a tactic from its Week 3 opponent in Sunday's game: an aggressive pass-rush. The Raiders quickly got into the backfield often and recorded four sacks on Jets QB Mark Sanchez in a dominating 34-24 victory. Sanchez also was harassed into throwing an interception in the end zone during the first half and New York managed just seven points after halftime.
Analysis: Sanchez had a much rougher second trip to Oakland in his career, getting bloodied on one of the Raiders' sacks and needing a visor to protect a cut on his face. "I just feel like they're a revamped Raiders group," Sanchez said. "We had momentum on our side, we let them hang around at halftime then they came and knocked us around a little in the third quarter." Oakland also recovered a fumble on Antonio Cromartie's kickoff return late in the third quarter. Consider the Raiders a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST against New England in Week 4.
News: On the heels of an emotional last-second loss to Buffalo in Week 2, the Oakland defense looks to improve quickly for Week 3 against the run-heavy Jets. The Raiders allowed touchdowns on each of the five Bills' second-half drives, including the game-winning score on fourth down, when a defensive breakdown left Bills WR David Nelson wide open in the end zone with 14 seconds to play. "Any time you lose, especially in that fashion, it's very disappointing," Oakland DT Richard Seymour said. "But one game doesn't make the season. You move forward."
Analysis: The challenge for the Raiders will be improving a defense which allowed 223 rushing yards and 481 overall against the Bills. The Raiders ranked sixth in the AFC allowing 322.8 yards per game in 2010, but are 25th in the NFL this season, giving up an average of 395.5 yards. "You can't take a play off, you can't take an opportunity off, you have to finish everything you do," coach Hugh Jackson said. The Jets offense has sputtered on the ground, which gives Oakland a positive outlook. However, Fantasy owners should still seek other DST options for Week 3 and consider the Raiders a low-end possibility.
News: The Raiders allowed a second-half rally in Week 2 at Buffalo, ultimately giving up 38 points and 481 net yards of offense. They allowed 35 points in the second half. The Raiders forced one turnover in the game, but managed no sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders defense looked solid early on, holding the Bills to just three points in the first half. They mostly limited Fred Jackson to just one 34-yard carry, but looked tired in the second half as Jackson ran the ball all over them and Ryan Fitzpatrick got the passing game going. The Raiders defense remains a low-end unit Fantasy and should not be used in most formats for their Week 3 matchup at home against the Jets.
News: The Raiders will travel across the country to take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 2, following their solid performance on Monday night in Denver. They will take on a Bills offense that scored 41 points in Kansas City during Week 1. They put up 364 yards of total offense in the game and committed just one turnover.
Analysis: While the Raiders defense is coming off a respectable performance on Monday night in Denver, they have some factors working against them in Week 2. For one, they will be working on a short week after playing on Monday night. Also, west coast teams that travel across the country have been known to struggle. There is also the matter of how good the Bills looked offensively in Kansas City. So while the Raiders proved in Week 1 that they could have some value as a Fantasy unit down the line, this may not be the best week to use them.
News: The Raiders DST allowed 23 points on 310 yards of total offense during Week 1 against the Broncos. The unit was able to hold Denver to just 38 yard rushing during the 23-20 victory while forcing a pair of fumbles. Oakland also blocked a punt and came away with an interception, which helped set up Sebastian Janikowski's 63-yard field-goal make in the second quarter. The unit was able to put constant pressure on Kyle Orton for most of the game and wound up with four sacks in the victory.
Analysis: While many thought Oakland's defense would severely miss Nnamdi Asomugha, it was tough to tell on Monday night. The unit forced three turnovers, four sacks and a blocked punt in Week 1 while holding Denver's offense to 38 yards rushing. Still, the unit was penalized numerous times and did let Denver back into the game a bit with a punt return. While the Raiders' may turn a few heads this season we are not ready to jump them up to a No. 1 Fantasy DST just yet. Owners should consider Oakland a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 2 against the Bills.
News: The Raiders lost DB Nnamdi Asomugha to free agency in the offseason and it could hurt them in Week 1 against the Broncos. Denver averaged 252 yards through the air last season and will have an improved running game with new head coach John Fox and RBs Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee. Oakland gave up nearly 190 yards passing in 2010 and 133 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Raiders defense did a solid job against the pass last season but the loss of their best cornerback definitely hurts. Still, they focused on beefing up their front seven in the offseason and should be formidable against the run. Having Jacoby Ford returning punts will also enhance their DST, so all might not be lost. But given their matchup for Week 1, consider the Raiders as a low-end No. 2 DST option.
News: The Raiders promoted assistant Chuck Bresnahan to defensive coordinator Monday, just weeks after bringing him back for a second stint with the organization. Oakland hired Bresnahan last month as a defensive assistant, but did not immediately specify his duties. Coach Hue Jackson said he had talked to some people outside the organization about the job, but stuck with a coach he had worked with before in Cincinnati. "The fact that I've had the chance to be in defensive meetings with Chuck and watch him lead the defensive staff made it an easy decision to name him our defensive coordinator," Jackson said in a statement. "I am impressed with his passion, attention to detail and energy. This staff gives us the opportunity to have one of the top defenses in the NFL."
Analysis: The Raiders have been aggressive so far this offseason about keeping some of their key potential free agents on the defensive side of the ball. Oakland gave cornerback Stanford Routt a three-year, $31.5 million deal, signed defensive tackle Richard Seymour to a $30 million, two-year contract, placed an $11,312,000 franchise tag on linebacker Kamerion Wimbley that has already been signed, and agreed to an $8 million, two-year contract with defensive tackle John Henderson. But cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is expected to walk, and that hurts the defense and makes them more susceptible to the pass. Oakland's DST is no better than a top-end No. 2 option heading into the 2011 season.
News: Days after re-signing DE Richard Seymour, the Raiders signed CB Stanford Routt to a three-year extension and placed the franchise tag on LB Kamerion Wimbley. Not bad for a defense that doesn't have a defensive coordinator yet. Both moves all but ensure that CB Nnamdi Asomugha won't be back in Oakland.
Analysis: The Raiders DST made tremendous strides in 2010, but it could be for naught without Asomugha cutting off part of the field for them. That will hurt their pass defense quite a bit as Routt wasn't bad but is far from being the next Nnamdi. Oakland's DST is no better than a top-end No. 2 option heading into the 2011 season.
News: It's official: The Raiders and DL Richard Seymour have agreed to a two-year deal reportedly worth $30 million that includes $22.5 million in guarantees. Seymour was acquired in September of 2009 from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2011 first-round pick. "Richard is an important part of our team and he continues to be highly productive and a major contributor," head coach Hue Jackson said in a statement.
Analysis: The Raiders DST made tremendous strides in 2010 and would have the potential to be a starting option in deeper leagues in 2011 if they find a way to bring back CB Nnamdi Asomugha. That's a big if as he's scheduled to be a free agent, and with the Raiders making Seymour the highest-paid defender chances are it won't happen. That will hurt their pass defense quite a bit. Oakland's DST is no better than a top-end No. 2 option heading into the 2011 season.
News: The contract of Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha has been voided because he failed to meet certain incentives. Asomugha will be a free agent whenever free agency picks back up after labor negotiations are settled. "The contract is voided but we have to wait on all the ramifications of the CBA before we really move on from there," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Sunday, via the Contra Costa Times.
Analysis: Asomugha immediately becomes the elite defensive free agent this offseason and will demand a sizable salary because of his superior skills as a cover corner. While Asomugha's Fantasy value isn't great because teams avoid throwing his way, whatever defense unit picks him up will get an automatic boost.
News: The Raiders DST closed the season on a strong note Sunday at Kansas City in Week 17. The Raiders had two interceptions, including Stanford Routt returning one for a touchdown. The Raiders also had seven sacks, including three from Kamerion Wimbley. On special teams, Jacoby Ford led the Raiders with two kick returns for 36 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders DST made tremendous strides in 2010 and have the potential to be a starting option in deeper leagues in 2011. You might not draft the Raiders DST in 2011, but they can be a useful bye-week replacement. Keep an eye on what happens this offseason, but don't be surprised if the Raiders play well on defense next season. And they also have the threat of Ford, who had three kickoff returns, on special teams.
News: The Raiders visit the Chiefs in Week 17, and Fantasy owners will be hoping Jacoby Ford can score on a return against Kansas City like he did earlier this season. Oakland has given up an average of 30.7 points in its last three games, however.
Analysis: Ford is a big threat to score on special teams for the Raiders, but they'll have to shore up their defense a little in Week 17, especially if the Chiefs leave their starters in quite a bit. This unit should only be used in deeper leagues as a No. 2 option for Week 17.
News: The Raiders defense could not slow down the Colts offense much in Week 16 but they received a big play on special teams. WR Jacoby Ford returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, his third of the year setting a franchise record. But that would be one of the few bright spots for Oakland. Despite picking off QB Peyton Manning twice in the game, Oakland allowed 370 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the 31-26 loss.
Analysis: Oakland had a dominant performance on defense in their last outing but could not do the same against the Colts on Sunday. Indianapolis rushed for 191 yards and Peyton Manning picked apart their secondary for three touchdown passes. Oakland has shown flashes of being a solid defense but their inconsistencies have hindered their Fantasy value. Having Ford returning kicks is a plus but heading into Week 17 against the Chiefs, consider the Raiders DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders had a dominate performance on defense in their last game but might have their hands full in Week 16 against the Colts. Indianapolis sports the No. 1 pass offense in the league, putting up over 298 yards per contest, but also rank 32nd in rushing offense. Oakland ranks fifth in the NFL against the pass, allowing over 197 yards per game, but have the league's 26th-best run defense.
Analysis: The Raiders held Denver to just 235 yards of total offense a week ago, but Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning are two completely different quarterbacks. DB Nnamdi Asomugha will be relied on heavily in Week 16 and it will up to the rest of the secondary to help shut down the Colts pass-happy offense. Oakland matches up with Indianapolis pretty well, but the Colts like to work in the running game and have been effective at it over the last few weeks. Consider the Raiders DST a No. 2 Fantasy option for Sunday's games.
News: The Raiders defense gave up a couple of big plays in Week 15 against the Broncos, but they were able to limit Denver for the mostpart. Oakland allowed a 40-touchdown run and a 33-yard scoring strike by rookie QB Tim Tebow, but held Denver to just 235 yards of total offense in the 39-23 win. The Raiders were able to sack Tebow twice and held the Broncos running backs to just 28 yards rushing. LB Quentin Groves also tackled RB Correll Buckhalter in the end zone for a safety in the victory.
Analysis: The Raiders had given up 30-plus points in three of their last four games entering Sunday but they did a solid job of slowing down the Broncos. Aside from the two big plays, Denver could do nothing against Oakland's physical front as they all but shut down the running game. The Raiders could be in for a rough game next week against the Colts but they matchup up pretty week against the pass-happy offense. Oakland entered Sunday ranked seventh in the league in pass defense while Indianapolis sports the eighth-best passing attack in the league. Consider the Raiders DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option for Week 16.
News: The Raiders will face a team in Week 15 that they held to just 14 points and 240 of total offense when they met earlier in the year -- the Broncos. Oakland won that contest 59-14 and could have similar success against the division foe again. Denver enters Sunday ranked fifth in the NFL in passing offense but 29th in rushing. Oakland has the seventh-best pass defense in the league but rank 26th against the run.
Analysis: Oakland has given up 30-plus points in three of their last four games but have a favorable matchup in Week 15. Denver is on a four-game losing streak and have scored an average of 16.5 points during that span. But the key to Sunday's game will be slowing down the Broncos potent passing game. The Raiders have done it before and will be able to use their running attack to control the game. While they have let Fantasy owners down before, consider the Raiders DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option for Week 15.
News: The Raiders DST picked off Jaguars QB David Garrard once and sacked him twice but otherwise did absolutely nothing to slow down Jacksonville in Week 14. Oakland held Garrard to 159 passing yards, but he threw three touchdowns. It also yielded 210 rushing yards to running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings, each player totaling at least 100 yards and a score.
Analysis: The Raiders DST could be in for a better week when the battered Broncos come to Oakland. Consider this DST a sleeper option for their Week 15 matchup.
News: Despite a gashing by the Dolphins two weeks ago, the Raiders run defense has actually improved over their last six games. In that span they've allowed two rushing touchdowns and no 100-yard rush games (one 100-total-yard game). Of course, that doesn't include how running backs have done against them through the air: Four receiving touchdowns allowed to rushers in that same span. Why all the details on how running backs are doing against them? Because they'll take on Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jaguars in Week 14 in Jacksonville (meaning they'll take a cross-country trip). It doesn't help their plight that David Garrard has 11 total touchdowns (eight passing) and three contests over 250 yards over his last five games, either.
Analysis: This isn't a great week to trust the Raiders DST, even with Garrard throwing four interceptions and fumbling the ball away twice in his last three games. The bottom line is that the Jaguars will likely use a ton of Jones-Drew against the Raiders, and the Oakland native should register his sixth-straight 100-yard game against them. Consider another DST before finalizing your Week 14 lineup.
News: The Raiders entered Week 13 against the Chargers having given up 30-plus points in each of their last two contest. They got things back on track Sunday as they held the high-powered San Diego offense to just 13 points and 268 yards of total offense. Oakland shut down the run and held RB Mike Tolbert to only 16 yards on the ground. The Raiders sacked QB Philip Rivers four times and DB Michael Huff added an interception in the 28-13 win.
Analysis: The Raiders had been horrible on defense in recent weeks, but they were able to bow up and limit a Chargers team that was averaging over 33 points per contest in their last four games. They put constant pressure on Rivers throughout the game and never let him get comfortable in the pocket. While he did throw for 280 yards and a score, locking down the running game was the key to Sunday's win. Oakland will travel to Jacksonville next week to play a team that has won three of their last four. The Raiders DST as had a few solid performances this season, but they remain a second-tier Fantasy option heading into Week 14.
News: The Raiders will face a Chargers offense in Week 13 that is averaging over 33 points per contest in their last four games. San Diego enters Sunday ranked second in the league in passing offense and 15th in rushing. Oakland will counter with a defensive unit ranked fifth against the pass but a lowly 28th against the run. When the division foes met in Week 5, the Chargers scored 35 points and put up 506 yards against the Raiders.
Analysis: Oakland has not played well in recent weeks, allowing over 30 points in their last two games, and will go into Week 13 banged up on defense. The Chargers also have key injuries on offense but they continue to be an offensive machine and find away to score no matter who is on the field. San Diego is giving up an average of 9.8 Fantasy points to opposing DSTs this season, but Oakland could not slow them down the first time these teams met. The Raiders don't matchup well in Week 13 so consider their DST a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders DST scored a touchdown in Week 12 against the Dolphins but surrendered a ton of yards and points. Jacoby Ford took the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown, however, Oakland's defense struggled to stop the Dolphins on Sunday. The unit surrendered 33 points on 471 yards of total offense, with 20 of those points coming in the second half. The Raiders were able to rack up three sacks in the loss, but only forced one turnover and allowed 186 yards rushing.
Analysis: The Raiders' DST was able to score a touchdown on Sunday, but did little else for Fantasy owners as the Dolphins were literately ran right through them. The unit has now struggled in back-to-back games and faces a high-powered San Diego offense in Week 13. The Chargers have a ton of weapons and on the offensive side of the ball and can put up points in a hurry. Fantasy owners should consider the Raiders a low-end Fantasy DST heading into Week 13.
News: Raiders coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that DB Nnamdi Asomugha, who hasn't played since Week 8, will play in Week 12 vs. Miami.
Analysis: The Raiders DST ranks as the sixth-best unit in standard Fantasy leagues this season, and they could have a field day on Sunday against Miami's depleted offense. Start them in all Fantasy formats as a low-end No. 1 option in Week 12.
News: The Raiders defense will look for a bounce-back performance in Week 12 against the Dolphins. Oakland's defense was gashed for 431 yards of total offense and surrendered 35 points to the Steelers in Week 11. Coach Tom Cable said the Raiders took more physical punishment Sunday against Pittsburgh than they gave. "Unfortunately, we got the tables turned on us," Cable said. "In that regard, I think it's probably a good lesson for us." Miami enters Week 12 ranked 21st in total offense and are averaging just 17.2 points per game. The Raiders DST ranks sixth, in terms of Fantasy points and has racked up 29 sacks and forced 15 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: The Raiders' defense looked totally over matched against the Steelers last Sunday, but looks to have a favorable matchup against the Dolphins. Miami was forced to start Tyler Thigpen in Week 11 against the Bears, after both Chad Henne and Chad Pennington went down with injuries earlier in the season. While Pennington is done for the year, there is still a chance Henne could play on Sunday. However, even if he does, the Dolphins could also be without Brandon Marshall, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. Miami appears to have major issues on offense right now, which could be exactly what Oakland's defense needs to get back on track. Consider the Raiders a No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 12.
News: The Raiders DST could not stop the Steelers Week 11 in a 35-3 defeat. Oakland played ugly in the Week 11 debacle and the Raiders DST allowed 431 yards of total offense to the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger could do pretty much anything he wanted in the game as the Raiders were without Nnamdi Asomugha once again. Roethlisberger threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another as the Raiders DST could stop nothing in the game. The Raiders DST forced just one turnover when Rashard Mendenhall fumbled, and they could only sack Roethlisberger twice in the game.
Analysis: The two sacks for the Raiders DST were the lowest total since getting two in Week 6 at San Francisco. The Raiders DST had been awesome in the last three games against the Broncos, Seahawks and Chiefs but returned after the bye to look pretty silly against the Steelers. The Raiders DST faces Miami in Week 12. They should definitely have a better showing but should still be considered nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders defense is coming off a bye and used the time off to get healthy. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (ankle) and defensive tackle John Henderson (foot) both returned to practice Wednesday, albeit limited. Both are expected to play at Pittsburgh in Week 11, barring a setback. They'll be rejoining a defense that has surrendered 236.0 yards per game during a three-game winning streak. The Raiders rank second against the pass, allowing 184.8 yards per game but only 24th against the run, allowing 124.8 yards per game. They'll be looking to stop RB Rashard Mendenhall, who hasn't had a 100-yard game since Week 3.
Analysis: The Steelers give up only 7.9 Fantasy points per game to DSTs, tied for ninth-lowest in the NFL, but the Raiders DST matches up well with the Steelers' strengths, i.e. throwing the ball. Still, it's more solid than spectacular in Fantasy, so with this iffy matchup, you should consider it a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders defense was playing a so-so game against the Chiefs in Week 9 but it received a huge boost shortly after halftime. WR Jacoby Ford took the opening kick of the second half 94 yards for a touchdown to provide Oakland with their first score of the game. After that Oakland fought back, with the help of their defense, to win the game in overtime. They sacked QB Matt Cassel three times in the game and picked him off once in the 23-20 win.
Analysis: The Raiders DST did a solid job of shutting down the run in Week 9 and held the Chiefs potent No. 1 rushing attack to just 104 yards. Oakland gave up 216 yards and two touchdowns through the air but did a decent job considering they were without All-Pro DB Nnamdi Asomugha. The Raiders have a bye next week before traveling to Pittsburgh in Week 11. The Steelers aren't the best matchup for this DST so consider it a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders enter Week 9 against the Chiefs with the 26th ranked run defense in the league, but they have gotten better over the last few games. Oakland has held two consecutive opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards for the first time since 2006, which will be helpful considering they will be facing Kansas City's high-powered running attack with RBs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. The difference might be in the passing game, however, especially with DB Nnamdi Asomugha questionable for Sunday's matchup. In two games between the division foes last season, the Raiders held the Chiefs to 26 combined points.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has been pretty solid over the last few weeks but they have always struggled against the Chiefs, especially at home. Oakland's last home win in the series came on Dec. 28, 2002. Kansas City has the league's worst passing game but can move the ball on the ground, averaging over 190 yards rushing per game. Despite the Raiders recent success stopping the run, the Chiefs are a whole different animal. Consider their DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option but could be useful as a bye-week replacement for Week 9.
News: Oakland didn't let up after it's dominate performance over Denver in Week 7. The Raiders has outscored the opposition 92-17 the past two weeks -- the most lopsided two-game stretch for the franchise since 1967. Tom Cable's squad clamped down hard on Seattle as they won for a second straight game and knocked the Seahawks off, 33-3. Oakland didn't allow a first down until more than 27 minutes into the game, had eight sacks and gave up just 162 yards of offense, including 47 on the ground. It was the fewest yards allowed by the Raiders since 2006 and the fewest points allowed since shutting out Kansas City in the final game of the 2002 season. Pro Bowl DB Nnamdi Asomugha left the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained right ankle. X-rays were negative and the team did not know how serious the sprain was.
Analysis: The Raiders are flying high right now and have a lot of confidence. They host the Chiefs in Week 9, a team coming off an overtime win over the Bills in Week 8. Kansas City has been averaging 354.9 yards of total offense and 23.3 points per game this year. But the Raiders are playing like there is no tomorrow and have stepped up in a big way. With six teams on byes next week, the Raiders could once again be a nice bye-week replacement for Week 9.
News: Oakland is coming off a stellar performance in Week 7 as they shutdown the Denver Broncos. This week the Raiders host the Seahawks, a team that has found a go-to receiver the past two weeks -- Mike Williams. Williams has 21 catches for 210 yards, but will be matched up against Pro-Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in Week 8. DT Tommy Kelly said Seattle's zone-blocking scheme reminds him of Houston's. The Texans rushed for 249 yards against the Raiders this year. "Last time we played someone that was zone, we didn't execute real well," Kelly said. "I just hope we stick to the plan and get a little payback." Kelly will also be looking for a fourth straight game with at least 0.5 sacks.
Analysis: The Seahawks are averaging 294 total yards of offense per game. The Raiders have one of the best pass defenses in the NFL, but are allowing 138.9 yards on the ground per contest. Despite a good matchup in Week 8, it remains to be seen that the Raiders defense can have two dominant performances in consecutive weeks. There are six teams on byes this week, so the Raiders should be viewed as a bye-week replacement in Week 8.
News: Oakland's DST entered Week 7 with one of the best pass defenses and they showed why on Sunday. They held Denver's high-powered offense to 198 passing yards and 75 yards on the ground. Raiders DB Chris Johnson picked off Broncos QB Kyle Orton on their first play in Week 7 and brought it to the house giving the Raiders a 14-0 lead. On the next series for Denver, rookie Demaryius Thomas fumbled, but he was ruled down by contact. After a challenge, it was overturned and the Raiders were given the ball on Denver's 21 yard line. The DST did not get the touchdown, however, as a lineman returned the fumble to the end zone, but the play was blown dead. The Raiders three takeaways tied a season high and also sacked Orton four times. "When you win a game, it's like, 'OK, we won, let's go onto the next one.' Now, this one, it's like, 'We won and we won convincingly. Let's let this build into a momentum swing for us,"' DB Nnamdi Asomugha said.
Analysis: Oakland shocked Denver on Sunday and shut down one of the best passing attacks in the NFL. The Raiders are still allowing less than 200 yards passing per game and play host to the Seahawks and Matt Hasselbeck in Week 8. Seattle is coming off a solid outing rushing the ball in Week 7, so they may give the Raiders some trouble. With six teams on byes next week, owners should view the Raiders DST as a sleeper option or bye-week replacement in Week 8.
News: Oakland travels to Denver for an AFC West showdown in Week 7. Denver has passed for 1,866 net yards and run for just 404, which means Raider DBs should be busy Sunday. "As a corner, you definitely would much rather play a team that passes rather than lines up in the Wing T or the Wishbone," CB Stanford Routt said. CB Nnamdi Asomugha said the defense has had trouble playing zone because it spends the vast majority of its time in man coverage. "We've been doing a lot more (zone) in practice (this week) so that when we do go to it, we lock it down, Asomugha siad. Theyll spread you out. They come out with three receivers pretty much every play because they want to throw. Its different than the Broncos weve faced in the past." Oakland gave up 349 yards of total offense in Week 6 to San Francisco.
Analysis: The Raiders have been allowing less than 200 yards passing per game through six weeks, so it will be interesting to see which team gets worked over on Sunday. Oakland also has one of the worst defenses against the run, but faces one of the worst rushing attacks in the league. With an offense that hasn't really gotten going this year, the Raiders DST spends a good amount of time on the field. They did a good job limiting the 49ers for a half in Week 6, but struggled in the second half. Look for the Broncos to challenge the Raiders in Week 7, which is why we view them as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST option.
News: The Raiders defense slowed the the 49ers in the first half of Week 6 but gave up some big plays after halftime. After limiting San Francisco to just three point in the first half, Oakland allowed QB Alex Smith to throw for 196 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 17-9 loss. Both of the touchdown passes came in the second half as the Raiders were unable to pick off Smith and sacked him just two times. They held RB Frank Gore relatively quiet for the first three quarters but gave up a 64-yard run late in the game. DB Michael Huff pulled down Gore in the red zone to delay the score. Smith hit TE Vernon Davis on the next play for a 17-yard touchdown strike. Oakland gave up 349 yards of total offense in the defeat.
Analysis: The Raiders DST did a good job of limiting San Francisco early on but were on the field for a great deal of time as their offense was not able to do much. They entered Sunday's game ranked 31st in the league against the run and held the 49ers to 158 yards rushing. Oakland's defense has a lot of things to like but they can only do so much when they are not backed up by the offense. The Raiders face the Broncos and their high-powered passing game in Week 7 so continue to view the DST as a No. 2 option.
News: The Raiders defense has allowed 947 combined yards in the last two weeks against Houston and San Diego. CB Stanford Routt is optimistic on how they will be able to lower those numbers Week 6 at San Francisco. "We feel like we're still a good defense and that everything that has gone wrong the past two weeks is fixable," Rout said. The special teams has been the most important part of the Raiders DST after blocking two punts against the Chargers, returning one for a touchdown. The defense did score late in the game on a Philip Rivers fumble.
Analysis: The 49ers offense certainly is not as explosive as the Texans or Chargers, so the DST could have just as big of an impact and allow less yards at the same time. If the Raiders can take care of the "holes", especially in the running game (ranked 31st), they can be considered a solid Fantasy option, maybe as a low-end No. 1 unit. For now, we see the Raiders DST as a solid No. 2 Fantasy option in Week 6.
News: The Oakland Raiders picked up a monster victory at home Week 5 against the San Diego Chargers. In a hard-fought back-and-forth contest, the Raiders came out on top 35-27 and they owe it mostly to the defense. Oakland came out firing on all defensive cylinders as the team blocked two punts in the first quarter. Rock Cartwright blocked a punt on the Chargers' first drive and that ended up as a safety. After a field goal for the Raiders, Oakland's Brandon Myers blocked another punt. This time it turned into a Hiram Eugene 5-yard TD return. That made the score 12-0 Oakland. Oakland's Tyvon Branch then returned a fumble by quarterback Philip Rivers 64 yards to the house for a defensive touchdown with just over a minute to play in the fourth quarter to ice it for the Raiders.
Analysis: The Raiders, which allowed a ridiculous 506 yards of offense to the Chargers but never broke, had not blocked two punts in the same game since Nov. 21, 1976 at Philadelphia. The Oakland DST forced three turnovers, picked up three sacks, blocked two punts, forced a safety and scored two defensive touchdowns in the game. That is a dominating defensive effort and, aside from Week 4 against Houston, has been close to the norm for the Raiders DST. They have 10 sacks on the year and are definitely worth using in Week 6 at San Francisco after this dominating effort.
News: As the Oakland Raiders get set to host the San Diego Chargers Week 5, only the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills have a lower-scoring Fantasy DST unit after four weeks of the season. The Raiders DST has done little this year and is coming off its worst output of the season Week 4 against Houston. The Raiders DST failed to come up with an interception, fumble recovery or sack against the Texans and allowed 441 yards and 31 points in the game. Things should not get easier Week 5 as the Chargers are one of the best offensive teams in the NFL.
Analysis: San Diego may be excellent offensively, but the team has given up solid Fantasy points to opposing DSTs this season. That is thanks in large part to the fact they've already allowed the opposition to score four defensive touchdowns, including two in Week 3 against the Seahawks. DSTs have been able to get to quarterback Philip Rivers and he's thrown four picks in four games. That said, defensive touchdowns are rare and we don't expect the Raiders to keep the trend going against San Diego. They are not a solid unit and are not worth using in Fantasy play for Week 5.
News: The Raiders defense, which came in ranked No. 2 in overall defense, could not slow down the Texans in Week 4. The unit allowed 31 points and 441 yards of total offense despite the Texans being shorthanded on offense. Andre Johnson did not play because of an ankle injury, Jacoby Jones left with a leg injury and Arian Foster was held out of the first 23 minutes of the game because of disciplinary reasons. Still, they could not slow down the Texans, who rushed for 249 yards. Oakland's defense was unable to record a sack and did not force a turnover in the loss.
Analysis: Oakland's defense has played well this season, but were unable to slow down Houston's offense. Perhaps the biggest surprise on Sunday was Oakland's inablilty to get to the quarterback. Houston had allowed 11 sacks coming into Week 4, but the Raiders were unable to get to Schaub all game. They will need to regroup big time as they face another stiff challenge in Week 5 against the Chargers. San Diego has tons of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and put 41 points on the board in Week 4.
News: The Houston Texans had their high-powered offense shut down in their first loss of the season in Week 3 against Dallas. They're not expecting to have an easier time against the surprising third-ranked defense of the Oakland Raiders in Week 4. The Texans have won three of the last four meetings with the Raiders, including a 29-6 home victory last year. Houston believes this Oakland team might be the best it has faced in quite some time, with the Raiders allowing 260.7 yards per game to rank third in the NFL after finishing 27th last year. "This team poses matchup problems for us," Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. "I think they're third in defense in the league right now. They've got a great corner (Nnamdi Asomugha), so obviously they can cause us problems."
Analysis: Asomugha has fared well in his last three games against Texans star Andre Johnson, helping limit the Pro Bowler to a total of five catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns. Johnson could be limited Sunday since he's bothered by an ankle injury suffered two weeks ago in a win at Washington, though he managed four receptions for 64 yards against Dallas. Last Sunday, Asomugha was outstanding in helping hold Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald to two catches for 26 yards, although one went for a touchdown. The Texans may be better off handing the ball to NFL leading rusher Arian Foster, who gained 106 yards against the Cowboys to increase his total to 406. The Raiders rank only 24th against the rush, compared to second against the pass. Although, pressuring QB Matt Schaub will be key. Schaub has been sacked an AFC-high 11 times this season. There are still a lot more safer options than starting the Raiders DST in Week 4, so consider those alternatives.
News: The Raiders DST allowed 24 points and 227 yards of total offense in Week 3 to the Cardinals. The Raiders defense allowed all 23 points over the first three quarters and kept Arizona off the scoreboard in the fourth. The unit forced two fumbles, both on punt returns and had an interception while recording two sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has looked solid over the last two weeks, but that came against two teams that are searching for their offensive identity. The true test will come in Week 4 when the Texans come to town. Houston has put up gaudy numbers over the first three weeks of the season and have plenty of weapons on offense. Consider the Raiders DST a low-end No. option heading into Week 4.
News: Oakland has succeeded in handing the ball off in 2010, as it is third in the NFL with 154.5 rushing yards per game, but it has had trouble stopping the run, allowing 140.0 yards per game (28th). The Raiders now face an Arizona team in Week 3 that is paced by RB Tim Hightower, who rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown against the Falcons in Week 2 and leads all running backs with an average of 7.0 yards per attempt. To add an even bigger challenge to the mix, the Cardinals might finally get RB Beanie Wells onto the field in Week 3 after missing the first two games with a knee injury.
Analysis: The Raiders had trouble stopping the run in the preseason and it seems they can't fix the issue in the regular season. Oakland is also near the bottom of the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 26.0 points per game. The Arizona offense is near the bottom of the league in scoring offense (12.0 ppg), and while it can run the football, QB Derek Anderson is having trouble throwing the football. The Raiders DST is more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 3.
News: The Raiders defense gave up gave up just 242 yards and 14 points in a Week 2 win over the Rams. Oakland gave up a touchdown pass in the second quarter but did not allow St. Louis to score again until the fourth quarter. They recorded three sacks and Stanford Routt intercepted rookie QB Sam Bradford in the 16-14 victory.
Analysis: The Raiders did a solid job of limiting the Rams in Week 2 and bounced back after giving up 345 total yards, including 204 on the ground, in their opener against the Titans. Oakland has some talent on their defense but they are still too raw to trust in most Fantasy formats. Their special teams will add a few points throughout the year but Fantasy owners should leave the Raiders DST on waivers for Week 3 against the Cardinals.
News: The Raiders gave up 345 total yards, including 204 on the ground, in their opener against the Titans and will face another team in Week 2 that likes to run the ball. The Rams running backs ran for 85 yards in Week 1 and have Steven Jackson, who led the NFC in rushing last year with 1,416 yards. Linebacker Kamerion Wimbley insists the problems Oakland had stopping the run last week are correctable. "We just had a couple breakdowns here and there," Wimbley said. "I don't think it was anything with the scheme or the play-calling. We just had a couple mental breakdowns that gave them some big plays that allowed them to get that high on us." St. Louis also threw for 253 yards and a touchdown in their Week 1 game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Raiders had little success trying to stop the run in their first game and could be in for more of the same if they are not able to contain Jackson. Hopefully Nnamdi Asomugha will be healthy enough to play to help lock down Larry Fitzgerald. Playing at home will give Oakland an advantage and they could limit the scoring if they can get to rookie QB Sam Bradford early and often. That being said, Fantasy owners would be wise to stay away from the Raiders DST in Week 2.
News: The Oakland defense didn't have much luck on Sunday of Week 1 in stopping the Tennessee Titans. The Raiders DST couldn't limit much of anything as the Titans racked up 345 total yards, including 204 on the ground, in the 38-13 loss. The Titans committee just one turnover forced by the Raiders as Oakland was able to recover a fumble. The Raiders could come up with just two sacks of Vince Young and allowed the Titans to do pretty much anything they wanted on the ground.
Analysis: There really wasn't much positive to say about the Raiders DST after one game against the Titans. They could not stop the run, could barely get to the quarterback and allowed 38 points on the board. All we can say is that Week 2 is going to be a lot better. Oakland is facing the Rams at home in the second week of the season and that one should be competitive. That said, we still would probably go with other Fantasy DST options in Week 2.
News: Few NFL teams put up more offense over the final five games of the season last year than did Oakland's Week 1 opponents, the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee is out for blood this season with Vince Young under center and it could be a long day for the Raiders DST Week 1 on Sunday. The Raiders allowed a whopping 361.9 yards per game in 2009 and were among the worst teams in the NFL against the rush. The Titans boast a player named Chris Johnson who runs the ball for them and we don't believe the Raiders have the capacity to stop him.
Analysis: Johnson rushed for over 2,000 yards last season and we dare the Raiders to limit him on Sunday. Oakland surrendered almost 156 rushing yards per game in 2009 and tied for the worst in the NFL with 24 rushing touchdowns allowed. We fully expect Johnson, Young and the Titans to run all over them in Week 1. They are not an advisable unit and should be kept inactive in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Fixing a porous run defense has been one of the top priorities for the Oakland Raiders leading up to this season. An 89-yard touchdown run by Chicago's Matt Forte and a 49-yard run by San Francisco's Frank Gore in the past two exhibition games show the Raiders still have plenty of work to do. "Definitely took a step back last two weeks," safety Michael Huff said Tuesday. "We stop them for 2 or 3 yards and then they break one for 60 or 70. Some of that comes down to me. Once it gets to me, it's one-on-one and I have to make the tackle and get him on the ground any way possible. That's what I am striving to. ... We definitely have the pieces to the puzzle to stop the run."
Analysis: Coach Tom Cable said the problem against the Bears was a linebacker out of position, while against the Niners it was just a matter of wrapping up and tackling. Shoring up the tackling is one of the biggest things Cable is looking for Thursday night in the exhibition finale against the Seattle Seahawks. "We'll make sure every day in practice that we're fundamentally addressing that issue," Cable said. Oakland has allowed an NFL-worst 143.7 yards rushing per game since winning the 2002 AFC championship and 146 touchdowns on the ground -- 15 more than the second-worst team, St. Louis. The Raiders were 29th in run defense last year but made big changes in the offseason. They drafted middle linebacker Rolando McClain eighth overall and defensive end Lamarr Houston in the second round. They also added two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson as a backup, traded for outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley and moved Richard Seymour from defensive end to tackle to shore up the middle. Oakland has a lot of optimism heading into the season, but until we see success in the regular season, the Raiders DST is a risky Draft Day option.
News: The Raiders have quietly posted a 2-0 record to open the preseason and a lot of their success has come on the heels of the defense. Oakland has allowed just 26 points and just two touchdowns in two games. They have held the opposition to 537 yards and 16.7 percent conversions on third downs (5 for 30). Oakland has also recorded 12 sacks.
Analysis: Oakland was near the bottom of the league in both scoring (23.7 ppg) and total defense (361.9 ypg) in 2009. While it is only the preseason, it is nice to see Oakland making some progress. The Raiders enter their second season under coordinator John Marshall. Oakland needs to make serious progress against the run, and it hopes the emergence of rush ends Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy will help a pass rush that finished 11th in the league in sacks (37) last season. Oakland has a lot of optimism heading into the season, but until we see its preseason success in the regular season, the Raiders DST is a risky Draft Day option.
News: Defensive lineman Richard Seymour signed his $12.4 million exclusive franchise tag tender with the Oakland Raiders on Saturday. By placing the tag on Seymour in February, the Raiders guaranteed Seymour a salary for next season of at least $12.398 million, which was the average salary earned last year by the five highest-paid defensive ends in the league. Because Seymour was not under contract, he missed Oakland's entire offseason program. He will rejoin the team when training camp starts on July 28.
Analysis: On paper, the Raiders have a pretty good defensive line with Seymour, John Henderson and Tommy Kelly among their corps, and they've addressed their defense efficiently this offseason. However, they're still no better than a low-end No. 2 choice heading into Draft Day, so keep them off rosters until you need a one-week replacement off waivers.
News: The Raiders have signed DT John Henderson to a one-year contract with the Raiders, according to ESPN. Henderson, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2002 draft, played eight seasons with Jacksonville, starting 124 games. In Henderson, the Raiders have added another big piece in their quest to improve their woeful run defense. Henderson, who has 423 career tackles, can play tackle in a 4-3 and end in a 3-4.
Analysis: Henderson should help the Raiders DST improve, but the unit remains a No. 2 option. They should not be drafted in the majority of leagues this season.
News: When the Raiders drafted LB Rolando McClain in the first round with the No. 8 overall choice, he did what any serious student of the game would do before his first big NFL test: start studying for the three-day mandatory minicamp. It paid off -- when he arrived for minicamp, Raiders coach Tom Cable immediately plugged him into his defense at middle linebacker with the first-team. McClain played inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense at Alabama and now he's the middle linebacker in the Raiders' 4-3, but he doesn't seem to mind. He wasn't coached up much during the first two days of practice and sat out the last day after taking on a lot of work in the previous sessions. "He's good," Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson said. "He's been tossed right into the flames, but you know what? He's got good instincts. The kid's physical, too. All he has to do is learn to speak up a little bit in the huddle, and he's going to be fine. A little louder. Other than that, I like how he's playing."
Analysis: This is a breath of fresh air for the Raiders, who effectively upgraded from Kirk Morrison to McClain at inside linebacker via the draft. Even though they have some great talents like Nnamdi Asomugha at cornerback and even Louis Murphy working on special teams, the DST isn't a very safe Fantasy option. Look their way off waivers when you need a one-week replacement during the season.
News: LB Kirk Morrison was traded from Oakland to Jacksonville on Saturday. Morrison was made expendable after the Raiders drafted Rolando McClain in the first round on Thursday night. "It's a new beginning for me," Morrison said in the Florida Times-Union. "I almost feel like I got drafted all over again." The Raiders also drafted DT Lamarr Houston in Round 2, CB Walter McFadden in Round 5, LB Travis Goethel in Round 6, CB Jeremy Ware in Round 7 and S Stevie Brown in Round 7.
Analysis: The loss of Morrison will hurt, but McClain should help the Raiders this season to replace him. Oakland also got help on special teams with the addition of WR Jacoby Ford in Round 4. Still, the Raiders DST is still a No. 2 Fantasy option coming into the season. They are best used as a one-week replacement off the waiver wire.
News: The Raiders drafted Alabama ILB Rolando McClain at No. 8 overall, prizing production and a pedigree of winning over combine numbers. "The guy made plays," coach Tom Cable said. "He made plays against the run, he made plays against the pass. ... But the thing that thrilled me the most is that he's playing in arguably the best college football conference there is, and he's able to go out there and direct it. The more you watch this guy, it was pretty easy to feel as a football coach that, man, he's really got his hand on this thing. And, obviously, you can't argue with the success they had as a football team." McClain said he never visited the Raiders, but met with two assistants last week in Alabama. He didn't expect to be picked by the Raiders and was playing poker with friends when he got the call that he was the choice. Alabama ranked 46th in the nation in run defense before McClain arrived before improving to 28th his freshman year and second in his final two seasons. He won the Butkus Award as the top college linebacker, recording 105 tackles, including 14.5 for losses.
Analysis: Stopping the run has been a common theme to Oakland's struggles the past seven seasons. The Raiders have allowed an NFL-worst 143.7 yards rushing per game since then and 146 touchdowns on the ground - 15 more than the second-worst team, St. Louis. The Raiders finished 29th in run defense last season, allowing 155.5 yards per game. The Raiders have already added outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, but McClain could make the biggest difference stepping right into the middle. McClain played mostly in a 3-4 defense at Alabama, but Cable believes he can easily transition into Oakland's 4-3 scheme. His addition puts in doubt the future of MLB Kirk Morrison, who led the team in tackles the past four seasons. Morrison recently signed his restricted free agent tender but could be traded during the final two days of the draft. McClain should improve the Raiders DST, but we still need to see what happens with Morrison. Even though McClain will help, the Raiders DST is still a No. 2 Fantasy option coming into the season. They are best used as a one-week replacement off the waiver wire.
News: The Oakland Raiders bolstered their pass rush Sunday by acquiring former first-round pick Kamerion Wimbley from the Cleveland Browns for an undisclosed draft pick. Oakland senior executive John Herrera confirmed the deal, saying Oakland gave up a pick it had acquired in a previous deal. The Raiders had acquired a third-round pick from New England last summer in a deal for Derrick Burgess. "This gives us a guy who has been a strong presence as a pass rusher," Herrera said. "He has been very productive."
Analysis: The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder was drafted in the first round out of Florida State in 2006. He had 6 1/2 sacks and 48 tackles in 15 games last season and has 26.5 sacks in his career. The Raiders remain a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Raiders designated DE Richard Seymour as their exclusive franchise player Thursday in a move that prevents any other team from negotiating with or making an offer to him. If he signs the one-year tender, Seymour is guaranteed the average salary of the five highest-paid defensive ends from last season $12,398,000 the average as of April 15 or 120 percent of his 2009 salary, whichever is largest. He can't sign the contract until March 5, the day free agency begins. It becomes invalid if not signed by Nov. 16. The Raiders and Seymour's agent, Eugene Parker, still are exploring the possibility of a multiyear contract, which would supersede the franchise tag's terms.
Analysis: Seymour has potential to be a low-end starting DL in IDP leagues, but he will need to improve on his first year with the Raiders. Keep an eye on what happens with his contract status, but he will likely be a late-round draft pick or even just a bye-week replacement in 2010. And even if Seymour stays with the Raiders as expected, the Raiders DST is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders continued their string of above-average defensive performances Week 17 against the Ravens, allowing 21 points on 330 yards. They recorded four sacks but didn't force any turnovers.
Analysis: The Raiders DST allowed less than 350 yards in each of its last four games, finishing strong after some blowouts earlier in the season. It has a few standout players and could probably become a worthwhile Fantasy option if the Raiders offense would take some of the pressure off. For now, it looks like a No. 2 Fantasy DST entering 2010.
News: The Raiders allowed 23 points and 282 yards of net offense in Week 16 at Cleveland. They forced just one fumble in the game and had two sacks of QB Derek Anderson.
Analysis: The Raiders defense is owned in under 10 percent of CBSSports.com leagues and we don't expect many owners are relying on them at this stage of the Fantasy season. We don't recommend them for Week 17 against the Ravens.
News: The Raiders allowed 19 points and 337 net yards of offense in Week 15 against Denver. They did not force any turnovers in the game, but did have three sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders held their own against a tough Broncos offense, but Fantasy owners should not get too excited. Starting what has been an erratic defensive unit at this critical stage of the Fantasy season is asking for trouble even against a weak Browns offense in Week 16.
News: The Raiders didn't have a standout defensive performance against the Redskins in Week 14, giving up only 34 points even though they allowed just 227 yards. They also recorded three sacks and forced a fumble.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is usually one of the worst in the NFL, consistently giving up plenty of yardage and points. The Raiders DST had a good matchup against the Redskins this week, but keep it reserved for Week 15 at Denver. It allowed 23 points and 372 yards to the Broncos in Week 3.
News: The Oakland Raiders actually defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Week 13 contest, 27-24. There wasn't much defense going on in this one as the Raiders DST allowed Pittsburgh 401 yards of offense. The Raiders DST managed just one sack of QB Ben Roethlisberger and only managed one turnover forced as they picked off one of Big Ben's passes.
Analysis: Oakland may have won this game against Pittsburgh but their DST did nothing that will make Fantasy owners go get them off waivers for the Week 14 game at home against Washington. The Washington offense actually looked decent in Week 13 and seems to be clicking better than they have all year. For that, the Raiders DST remains a unit to avoid in Week 14.
News: The Raiders DST had two sacks and no turnovers Thursday at Dallas. Trevor Scott had both sacks, but the Raiders did little else. Johnnie Lee Higgins had three punt returns for 10 yards, Gary Russell had one kickoff return for 15 yards and Tony Stewart had one kickoff return for 11 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is not a good Fantasy option in any leagues. Ignore them in Week 13 at the Steelers.
News: The Raiders defense had a decent showing on Sunday in a 20-17 win over the Bengals. Carson Palmer was limited to 207 yards through the air and no TD passes although he did run for two touchdowns. On the ground, the Bengals were a bit better with 177 yards on 43 carries with the two Palmer TDs. The Raiders created four turnovers in the game, recovering three fumbles and intercepting a Hail Mary at the end of the game.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has been pretty bad this season, which is not all that surprising. The offense should be better with Bruce Gradkowski now starting at QB instead of JaMarcus Russell, which could help the Raiders defense stay off the field. However, the Raiders could get picked apart in Week 12 at Dallas on Thanksgiving on short rest. Avoid the Raiders DST on Thursday.
News: The Raiders DST was respectable on Sunday in a Week 10 loss to the Chiefs. Matt Cassel was held to only 216 yards passing and no touchdowns with an interception by Chris Johnson. On the ground, the Chiefs mustered just 112 yards on 31 carries. Thomas Howard also recovered a Cassel fumble in the game and the Raiders defense sacked Cassel twice. The Raiders lost the game 16-10.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has not unexpectedly struggled for much of the season and this was one of their better performances. However, the Raiders take on a potent Bengals offense in Week 11 and should still be considered just a low-end Fantasy unit.
News: The Raiders didn't have a stellar defensive performance at San Diego in Week 8, but they did hold the Chargers to 24 points on 346 yards. They recorded one sack and one interception and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has some big-name players, but it tends to give up plenty of yards and plenty of points. The Raiders have a bye in Week 9 before hosting the Chiefs in an intriguing sleeper matchup in Week 10. Still, the Raiders DST is too risky to use in Fantasy.
News: With a ball-hawking defense and a punishing running game, the New York Jets took the pressure off struggling rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez and handed the Oakland Raiders their most lopsided home loss ever. Sanchez shook off the worst start of his young career by running for one touchdown and throwing for another, fellow rookie Shonn Greene ran for 144 yards and two scores and the Jets snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Raiders 38-0 in Week 7. Oakland allowed five touchdowns and 447 yards. Both Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene racked up over 100 rushing yards. The Raiders managed one sack and no turnovers.
Analysis: The Raiders defense showed very little effort against the Jets. New York pretty much had their way on offense and it seemed they were picking up a first down on every play. The Raiders definitely appear in disarray right now and you just don't know what type of effort you are going to see from them. They were great in Week 6 against Philly, but then put up a poor effort against the Jets. The Raiders DST has low-end Fantasy appeal heading into Week 8 against the Chargers. Oakland allowed 366 yards and 24 points in a Week 1 loss to the Chargers.
News: The Raiders had perhaps their best defensive performance of the season Week 6 against the Eagles, allowing nine points on 283 yards in the victory. They also recorded six sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has enough playmakers that it can sometimes make a decent contribution in Fantasy. It remains more of a matchups type despite this dominant performance, but against the Jets and struggling rookie QB Mark Sanchez in Week 7, it deserves a look as a sleeper unit.
News: The Raiders allowed 44 points and 483 total net yards of offense in Week 5 at the Giants. It was their highest point total allowed this season. They forced one turnover in the game and did not have a sack.
Analysis: The Raiders had a rough afternoon against the Giants in a game that was over by halftime. The Raiders have allowed some big games this season and despite having playmakers like Kirk Morrison and Nnamdi Asomugah on their team, we don't recommend them in any Fantasy format.
News: The Raiders allowed 29 points and 329 net yards of offense in Week 4 against Houston. They forced two turnovers (one interception and a fumble) and had four sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders proved they can put pressure on the quarterback with the four sacks, but otherwise did were torched for 300-plus yards once again. The Raiders defense has some good components with Kirk Morrison and Nnamdi Asomugha, but they are not a recommended Fantasy unit until they can start keeping points and yards off the board. They are certainly not an advisable unit for Week 5 at the Giants.
News: The Raiders didn't have a standout defensive performance against the Broncos in Week 3, allowing 23 points on 372 yards, including 215 rushing yards. They didn't have a sack or an interception, though they did recover a fumble.
Analysis: The Raiders DST entered the season as a sleeper Fantasy unit, but it hasn't impressed so far. It could get lit up by a good Texans offense Week 4 at Houston, so leave it on waivers.
News: The Raiders DST actually played well in Week 2 at Kansas City. The Raiders held the Chiefs to 10 points with two interceptions and two sacks. Greg Ellis had both sacks, and Michael Huff had both interceptions. On special teams, Louis Rankin had two kickoff returns for 41 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders had a good matchup against the Chiefs, but it's hard to say the same about Week 3 against Denver. Consider the Raiders a No. 2 DST option against the Broncos.
News: The much-maligned Raiders silenced their critics for three quarters during a Week 1 game against the Chargers by holding San Diego to 10 points. Unfortuately, they returned to their problematic ways in the fourth quarter. The Chargers came from behind twice to score 14 points and win the game with a 5-yard touchdown run from Darren Sproles with 18 seconds left on the clock. Oakland allowed 366 yards, including 148 on the ground. They did force an interception and recovered a fumble but managed just one sack.
Analysis: The addition of Richard Seymour really seemed to give the Raiders defense a boost against the Chargers. It's just unfortunate they got winded in the fourth and couldn't keep the pressure on QB Philip Rivers. The Oakland defense is still a work in progress, so consider them a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Chiefs.
News:Richard Seymour says he's "excited" to join the Oakland Raiders after initially being "blindsided" by his trade from New England. Seymour made his first public comments since the trade to the Boston Herald on Saturday. He planned to arrive Saturday afternoon and expects to play in the opener Monday night against San Diego.
Analysis: The five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman had not reported to the Raiders since they dealt a 2011 first-round pick for him last Sunday, raising speculation he did not want to join the NFL's worst team over the last six years. Seymour says he just needed to gather his thoughts and take care of some family issues before leaving for Oakland. There was also the matter of him facing suspension and losing out on money. He is a decent low-end Fantasy DL when active, but Fantasy owners should look to give him at least a week to let him get acquainted with his new team before activating him. The Raiders have one of the best cover corners in the league in Namdi Asomugah, but he is less than 100 percent going into Week 1 and we recommend staying away from the Raiders defensive unit in all leagues.
News: Raiders Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha is practicing again Tuesday, but it looks like he has supersized the cast and protective wrap on his broken left wrist. He says he'll definitely play the opener against San Diego.
Analysis: Asomugha is arguably the best cover corner in the NFL, but teams don't throw his way much. As a result, he doesn't have much Fantasy value because he doesn't produce many tackles or interceptions.
News: The Oakland Raiders took a big step toward improving their struggling run defense by acquiring five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour from the New England Patriots on Sunday. The move does not come without its risks as the Raiders gave up a first-round pick in 2011, which could be in the top 10 based on Oakland's recent history, to acquire a lineman who turns 30 next month and is in the final year of a contract paying him $3.7 million this season.
Analysis: Raiders owner Al Davis wanted immediate help for a defense that has struggled to stop the run in recent seasons. Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, Oakland has had the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 141.7 yards per game on the ground and 122 touchdowns rushing. The Raiders have allowed a 100-yard rusher in more than half of their games the past three years. Definitely a step in the right direction, we still don't think this makes the Raiders DST a unit to be using in most Fantasy leagues.
News: ESPN reports that Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha will be sidelined for two weeks while recovering from a chipped bone in his left wrist suffered against the Saints in preseason action.
Analysis: Considered by many to be the best cornerback in the NFL, Asomugha's absence will hurt the Raiders defense's chances of being ready for the start of the season. They've also been awful against the run this preseason, though they've been playing without LB Kirk Morrison this summer. Bottom line: This DST isn't worth owning in Fantasy play. If they get hot during the season, or if they have a great matchup in a week where you need a replacement DST, look for them off the waiver wire.
News:Glen Coffee burst up the middle for 18 yards to end the first quarter. He sprinted around right end for 18 more to start the second quarter. He went 35 yards to the left side on his next carry in a stretch that he said reminded him of high school. Instead, it came against the Oakland Raiders, which still had most of its starters in the game at the time. After spending much of the offseason trying to improve a leaky run defense, Oakland was exposed by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. Now the Raiders have three weeks to get things right before LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles and the San Diego Chargers arrive for opening night. "I don't know if you are going to sell the farm and move, but there is definitely concern, definitely things we have to clean up," linebacker Thomas Howard said. "I was disappointed with the run. Things need to change. Things must be cleaned up, definitely."
Analysis: Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, Oakland has had the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 141.7 yards per game on the ground and 122 touchdowns rushing. The Raiders have allowed a 100-yard rusher in more than half of their games the past three years, with journeymen backs such as Ron Dayne, Maurice Morris and Kolby Smith reaching the mark. After watching a third-round rookie, Coffee, gash them for 129 yards on 16 carries, and a sometime fullback in Michael Robinson add 97 more on 14 carries, it's back to work for the Raiders. Oakland gave up 275 yards on 47 carries, with star Frank Gore providing only 7 on his two carries. "I thought we had some guys not play very well," coach Tom Cable said Sunday. "We have to do a better job adjusting to it as coaches, and then, two, I think you have to at some point set your jaw and decide you're not going to get your rear end kicked like that." The Raiders are still adjusting to a new defensive coordinator (John Marshall), but some of their old issues linger. The Raiders DST has low-end Fantasy appeal until Marshall can right the ship.
News: John Marshall played coy when asked how his Oakland Raiders defense would differ from the one run the previous five seasons under former coordinator Rob Ryan. Marshall said he preferred to wait and let others make the judgment, saying all he knew was that "my hair won't be as long" as the wild-haired Ryan. The Raiders are hoping that the differences in Marshall's defense are much more substantial than hairdos. Oakland's new defensive coordinator spoke to the media for the first time since being hired in the offseason, vowing to fix the shoddy run defense by focusing on fundamentals and to do whatever it takes to "bring pressure" on the opposing quarterback. The switch from Ryan to Marshall was one of the most substantial the Raiders made on defense after last season, with nine of the 11 starters from the second half of the season back in Oakland this year.
Analysis: Ryan had been one of the few constants on the team during his five years as defensive coordinator. The team went through four head coaches, four offensive coordinators and six offensive play-callers in that span, posting a 20-60 record. Ryan endured through it all, surviving even after former coach Lane Kiffin wanted him replaced following the 2007 season. While he did have some success, most notably with the third-ranked defense in 2006 when Oakland's offense was so bad that the opposing teams spent most of the second halves running out the clock, the Raiders defense under Ryan was often a problem. In his five years, the Raiders allowed an NFL-worst 101 rushing touchdowns and the second-most yards per game at 138.7. Oakland's 154 sacks in that span were the seventh fewest in the league. The run defense was one of the glaring weaknesses that stood out for Marshall when he watched film of every game from the past two seasons after taking over the job. He said the talent was there to succeed, but players were too often in the wrong spots. He has placed a heavy emphasis on fundamentals this training camp, making sure players know where they are supposed to be so that all the gaps are filled on each play. The Raiders traded away DL Derrick Burgess Thursday, so they will need other players to step up in the pass-rush department. The Raiders DST has low-end Fantasy appeal until Marshall can right the ship.
News: The Raiders traded DE Derrick Burgess to the Patriots for draft picks on Thursday, ending a holdout at one camp and addressing a need in another. Burgess might wind up being a hybrid DE/OLB for the Patriots, playing some downs as an end and others as an outside linebacker. The Raiders are comfortable at the position and found Burgess to be expendable.
Analysis: The Raiders DST wasn't a good unit to begin with, but with Burgess gone you can expect their sack total to dwindle. They're no better than a one-week replacement off the waiver wire this season.
News: NFL Network reports that the Raiders and CB Nnamdi Asomugha have agreed to terms on a three-year deal that guarantees at least $28.5 million over the first two seasons and has a variable option for the third year. Asomugha's 2011 salary will be the average of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks (not cornerbacks) or $16.875 million whichever is greater -- unless the club refuses the option, in which case they cannot franchise him. Asomugha is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and this contract makes him one of the highest paid defensive players in league history. The NFL is still reviewing the contract.
Analysis: The Raiders also locked up CB Chris Johnson earlier this offseason, so their secondary should be effective in 2009. The team kept Tom Cable as its head coach and made John Marshall their defensive coordinator, which could signal the Raiders going to a 4-3 scheme. This obviously helps the Raiders DST, but not enough to make it any better than a one-week replacement option off the waiver wire.
News: The Raiders DST gave up 24 points and 380 yards to the Buccaneers in a Week 17 win. Their only turnover came on an interception and they had just one sack.
Analysis: The Raiders weren't a horrible Fantasy unit in 2008, as they closed nicely with five decent outings in their last eight. OK, so their weak division helped, but they'll be playing those same teams again in 2009. Don't draft the Raiders DST, by any means, but they do have some talent and will add to that in April's draft.
News: The Raiders defense gave up only 16 points to the Texans in a 27-16 win over the Texans Week 16. They allowed 362 total yards with 234 coming through the air and 128 on the ground. They also had an interception and fumble recovery.
Analysis: Hopefully you're not starting the Raiders DST. If you are, stop doing so. LEave them on waivers Week 17 and wait to see if they retool next year.
News: The Raiders DST gave up 49 points to the Patriots in Week 15, allowing 487 combined offensive yards in the game. They allowed Matt Cassel throw for four touchdown passes and gave up a kickoff return for a TD.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is basically pathetic and haven't done much to stop anybody recently. They are not a recommended option for Week 16 against Houston.
News: Oakland was destroyed in Week 14 at the hands of the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night. The Raiders DST allowed 372 yards of offense in the 34-7 drubbing. Oakland forced just one turnover, a Darren Sproles fumble, and did not sack QB Philip Rivers one time. The only bright spot for the DST was a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Justin Miller just before the half. Otherwise it was a pitiful day for a pitiful team.
Analysis: Oakland has underachieved defensively for the most part in 2008 and the Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option heading into Week 15 vs. New England. The Patriots should pick them apart.
News: The Raiders defense allowed Kansas City to total 10 points in the fourth quarter and break open a tie game for a Chiefs' 20-13 victory Week 13. Oakland gave up 301 yards, including 145 on the ground. The Raiders got just one sack and one interception for QB Tyler Thigpen.
Analysis: The Raiders actually had a few more chances for a few turnovers Week 13, but failed to capitalize. Oakland has underachieved defensively for the most part in 2008 and the Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option heading into Week 14 against the Chargers.
News: The Raiders held the Broncos to 10 points in Week 12 at Denver. They allowed 318 yards and forced two turnovers (one interception and a fumble), but did not have a sack in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders do not get a ton of sacks and do not force a lot of turnovers. They are a sub-.500 team that usually is playing from behind, so they should not be considered a viable Fantasy defense for Week 13 against Kansas City and upstart QB Tyler Thigpen.
News: The Raiders DST held the Dolphins to 17 points in a Week 11 loss and managed a safety plus a punt return for a touchdown, but they did allow 382 yards and only forced one turnover. They also added three sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders have played pretty well defensively over the last couple of weeks, but they just don't create enough turnovers to be useful in Fantasy play heading into Week 12 at Denver.
News: The Raiders defense had an impressive showing against the Panthers in Week 10, allowing them 17 points on only 219 yards. The Raiders also recorded four interceptions and two sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders defense isn't the most consistent unit, going without a sack two of the last four weeks, but it is a little underrated. Still, you shouldn't start it except as a last resort Week 11 at Miami.
News: The Raiders waived CB DeAngelo Hall on Wednesday, less than eight months after they traded for the former Pro Bowler. The acquisition of Hall from Atlanta in March was a big part of Oakland's plans to rebuild its defense, but the move backfired. The Raiders gave up a second-round pick to acquire Hall and also gave him a seven-year, $70 million contract. Hall struggled with nagging injuries throughout training camp and was picked on constantly by rookie receiver Eddie Royal and quarterback Jay Cutler in a 41-14 season-opening loss to Denver. With most teams choosing to avoid throwing at standout cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the other side of the field, Hall became a frequent target. In his last game, he was beaten for a 37-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins on the opening drive of a 24-0 loss to his former Falcons team. Hall got about $8 million of his contract for playing in eight games. But by releasing him now, the Raiders can use some of the money they planned to give Hall to try to keep Asomugha.
Analysis: In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed. Whether he's playing or not, the Raiders DST is not worth using in Fantasy play. They host the Panthers in Week 10.
News: The Raiders DST allowed 24 points and 453 yards to the Falcons in a Week 9 loss. They did manage to force a fumble and record three sacks.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is a little better than the team's offense, but not much better. In Week 10, Oakland will host Carolina, and the Raiders are not a recommended start for that matchup.
News: The Raiders DST held the Jets to 13 points in a Week 7 win, despite allowing 417 total yards. They also made two interceptions and recorded three sacks.
Analysis: The number of yards the Raiders gave up against the Jets was scary, but they certainly did the job in keeping New York off the board. In Week 8, Oakland visits Baltimore, who don't exactly have a high-powered offense. Consider Oakland an OK bye-week replacement option for the period.
News: The Raiders were lambasted by the Saints in Week 6, 34-3. The Raiders DST allowed 441 yards by the Saints as QB Drew Brees went wild with 320 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints did not commit any turnovers and the Raiders only sacked Brees once.
Analysis: The Raiders have been decent against the pass and poor against the run, but it won't matter as the Jets -- their Week 7 opponent -- can rack up the points. Oakland is horrible and the DST isn't much better. Keep the Raiders DST on the waiver wire for Week 7.
News: You probably already weren't considering using the Raiders DST in Week 6 at New Orleans, but just in case you were, you should know that the Saints are averaging over 400 yards of total offense per game and averaging 27.6 points per game.
Analysis: The Raiders have been decent against the pass and poor against the run, but it won't matter as the Saints' offense has posted nice numbers on nearly everyone they've played. Keep the Raiders DST on the waiver wire for Week 6.
News: The Raiders defense held the Chargers off the scoreboard in the first half Week 4 and allowed just three yards after three quarters. They wish the game had ended there. San Diego posted 25 points in the fourth quarter as they rallied for a 28-18 win. Oakland allowed 295 yards, including 141 on the ground. They sacked QB Philip Rivers four times and picked off two passes. Gibril Wilson also got a safety of LaDainian Tomlinson in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Raiders defense was a bit banged up Week 4, but they still did a good job keeping Tomlinson and Rivers contained for most of the afternoon. The Raiders defense has had only one really good performance this season and that came Week 2 against a weak Chiefs team. The Raiders are on a bye Week 5, but when they return to action Week 6 against the Saints, the Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders could be short-handed on defense Week 4 against the Chargers, where key starters Nnamdi Asomugha (elbow), Derrick Burgess (triceps) and Gerard Warren (pectoral muscle) have been slowed during practice. Asomugha has a small fracture in his elbow after getting kicked while trying to make a tackle against the Bills. He has been extremely limited all week. With backup cornerback Stanford Routt also questionable because of a sprained ankle, the Raiders could be forced to move starting free safety Michael Huff or backup safety Rashad Baker to cornerback on Sunday.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has had only one really good performance this season and that came Week 2 against a weak Chiefs team. The Chargers are a very good offensive team, so if the Raiders are missing some key players that makes the Raiders DST a poor Fantasy start.
News: The Raiders DST totaled three sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles (two recovered) at Buffalo in Week 3. Kalimba Edwards led the charge with a sack and forced fumble.
Analysis: The Raiders also helped put the offense in good field position thanks to KR Johnnie Lee Higgins' 32.7 yard return average on kickoffs. He may break one for a touchdown sometime. However, the Raiders DST is no better than a bye-week replacement option, and they're not worth using vs. San Diego in Week 4.
News: After the Raiders defense was torched for 41 points Week 1 against the Broncos and came under much scrutiny, particularly defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, they rebounded in a big way Week 2 during a 24-8 win against Kansas City. The Raiders held the Chiefs to 190 yards, including 55 on the ground. They also had five sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles -- although none were recovered.
Analysis: It definitely helped the Raiders Week 2 that they were going against Damon Huard and Tyler Thigpen, both mediocre quarterbacks. Regardless, they were motivated after getting trounced Week 1 and responded in a big way. The Raiders DST has potential, but they remain a No. 2 option heading into Week 3 against the Bills.
News: When Jay Cutler dropped back to pass in the season opener against Oakland, he rarely felt any pressure and was able to pick apart the Raiders' defense quite easily. Despite the inability to get pressure with their front four, the Raiders still were unwilling to alter their philosophy and call blitzes. "I'm not going to get really get into if I was the defensive coordinator what I would do because that doesn't really matter," coach Lane Kiffin said Wednesday. "I'm the head coach. I oversee everything and I control what I can control. Do I have the exact belief we do on defense? No, but it's hard to have the exact belief that we do. So, it is what it is."
Analysis: According to numbers compiled by Stats LLC, the Raiders blitzed just four times on 59 total plays in the opener. Three of those came on pass plays, with Cutler completing two and not getting sacked a single time. Last year, Oakland's 74 blitzes were tied for the fewest with Indianapolis. Owner Al Davis is known not to like blitzing and that has been the Raiders philosophy for years. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's father Buddy coached some of the game's most aggressive defenses in Chicago and Philadelphia and twin brother Rex uses blitzes frequently in Baltimore. But Rob Ryan rarely calls for them in games in Oakland despite using them frequently during practice to test quarterback JaMarcus Russell and successfully at times during the preseason. There is definitely potential with the Raiders DST, but until they play with some gusto, leave them out of Fantasy lineups. The Raiders play the Chiefs Week 2.
News: One of the primary issues for the Oakland following their Week 1 loss to Denver, disturbingly, was the pass defense that was supposed to be a strength. With two-time Pro Bowler DeAngelo Hall joining Nnamdi Asomugha as part of one of the league's best cornerback duos, the Raiders were supposed to be able to shut down the opposition through the air. Instead, the Broncos were able to get receivers open all night long despite missing their best big-play target in Brandon Marshall. Denver frequently picked on Hall, who was no match in the opener for rookie Eddie Royal, and also capitalized on miscommunications to get big plays down the field. Head coach Lane Kiffin called the performance of his pass defense "shocking," as Cutler went 16-for-24 for 299 yards, including nine completions for 146 yards to second-round pick Eddie Royal. "Before we make statements that we're not any good at one certain thing, let's play a couple games and look at it because we definitely have the ability to be a great pass defense," Kiffin said. "So, hopefully, this week we'll get back on track."
Analysis: Those of you who thought sleeper with the Raiders DST can put the unit to sleep, for now. Until they start to show signs of life, you can find a better option (Buffalo, N.Y. Jets, Carolina) off the waiver wire.
News: The Raiders allowed the Broncos to score on the opening drive Week 1 and Denver never looked back in a 41-14 rout. The Broncos ran up 441 yards, including 299 yards through the air. Denver didn't even have leading receiver Brandon Marshall, who was suspended for the game. Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, who scored $18 million in guarantees, was part of a line that failed to get pressure on QB Jay Cutler all game as Oakland had no sacks or turnovers.
Analysis: Oakland usually thrives in the passing game and only got stronger in that department in the offseason with the addition of Gibril Wilson. Well, they looked like a Pop Warner team Week 1. Denver did what they wanted and scored at will. There is definitely potential with the Raiders DST, but until they play with some gusto, leave them out of Fantasy lineups. The Raiders play the Chiefs Week 2.
News: The Raiders DST gave up 24 points to the Cardinals in Saturday's preseason game, but they did show some nice ball-hawking skills by making three interceptions. They also had a sack.
Analysis: The Raiders have a very capable secondary, but the unit will enter the season as a No. 2 DST. They could rise quickly if they get off to a good start, however, so keep a close eye on them.
News: The Raiders DST gave up 24 points to the Cardinals in Saturday's preseason game, but they did show some nice ball-hawking skills by making three interceptions. They also had a sack.

News:Raiders CB DeAngelo Hall said he's confident his injured right hand will heal enough so that he can play at full strength in Oakland's regular-season opener Sept. 8, reports the Contra Costa Times. He received assurance from noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews last week that the injury he sustained early in training camp is a torn ligament or tendon and not a broken bone. "I'll be all right depending upon how well I can protect (my hand) from here on," Hall said Wednesday.
Analysis: Plan on Hall being on the field for the start of the season. But don't expect many interceptions if he can't hold onto the ball. He's still worth drafting as a No. 2 DB in IDP leagues.
News: The fumbled punts, short returns and missed opportunities weighed on Johnnie Lee Higgins during his rookie year with the Oakland Raiders. A third-round pick out of UTEP a year ago who was expected to transform Oakland's return game, Higgins instead ended up losing his job midway through the season because he couldn't hold onto the ball or break off long returns. The demotion took its toll on Higgins' confidence and made it even harder for him to perform on the field. He mood remained down when he returned home to Texas, and attempts by friends and family members to cheer him up by telling him he was just a rookie did not help. Higgins came back this year and immediately began working harder in the weight room and tried to regain the confidence that helped him average 23.4 yards per punt return as a senior at UTEP in 2006. That showed in Higgins' performance in the exhibition opener, when he had a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown against San Francisco and also had a 38-yard return called back because of a penalty on Justin Griffith.
Analysis: The Raiders are counting heavily on Higgins this year, especially after letting Chris Carr leave for Tennessee as a restricted free agent in the offseason. Carr had handled the bulk of the returns for Oakland the past three seasons, becoming the Raiders' all-time leader with 4,841 yards in kickoff returns. He also handled 77 punts for 454 yards. Carr handled 82 percent of the returns during his tenure in Oakland, leaving a big hole to fill. Higgins, who came into camp as the favorite on punts, now will get a chance to see how he can do on kicks with rookie Tyvon Branch limited by a broken thumb. The Raiders haven't had a punt return for a score in five years, since Phillip Buchanon brought back two in the 2003 season. That was also the last year Oakland had a kick return for a score with Doug Gabriel doing it. Higgins doesn't have much Fantasy value this year, but he could help the Raiders DST if he can improve the return game.
News:Raiders CB DeAngelo Hall had a cast on his right hand after injuring it Friday, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. But after practice, Hall told the press that he had a broken bone in his right hand. The Raiders say he has a sprain. "I don't even feel like I should be out here practicing or going into the preseason, but it's something nobody else feels like is affecting anything, so I'm out there practicing and playing games," Hall said. "It ain't my choice. But I'm employee 23 (referring to his jersey number). I do what I'm told." Additionally, the paper reported that CB Nnamdi Asomugha left practice Tuesday with a left foot injury that the Raiders are mum on.
Analysis: If Hall and Asomugha are hurting, the stud Raiders secondary we touted this offseason will be a joke. We'll keep you posted on the status of both Hall and Asomugha. Consider the Raiders DST a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into 2008.
News:Terdell Sands was supposed to be the anchor of the Oakland Raiders run defense a year ago, a gigantic tackle expected to stuff holes in the middle of the field and disrupt the opposition. Instead, Sands was one of the biggest problems on a defense that was unable to stop the run all season. Sands was out of shape and too often out of position leading to countless big plays that helped doom the Raiders all season. After reviewing his play last season, Sands acknowledges that he must do much better this season in order to validate the $17 million, four-year contract the Raiders gave him a year ago and reverse five years of losing in Oakland. "I take it all, because they look for me to be a big part of it," Sands said. "I wasn't mentally in it, so I did lose some gap responsibility and all my true effort wasn't out there."
Analysis: Sands has an explanation for his poor play even if he's not making excuses. His mother died in February 2007 and he spent more time mourning than he did preparing for the season. He was not a regular participant in offseason workouts, missing lots of time in the spring and then arrived at training camp out of shape. He never was able to catch up and struggled all season long. Sands, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 335 pounds but appears even heavier, has lost weight this season but wouldn't say how much or what he weighs currently. Coach Lane Kiffin has seen improvement but is still concerned about Sands' conditioning, especially after a left knee injury that has limited Sands' practice time. Sands has never been a Fantasy viable player and can be left alone. The Raiders allowed a league-worst 4.8 yards per carry last season, as teams easily ran through big holes all year long. Oakland allowed 18 runs of 20 or more yards last season, tied with Denver for most in the NFL. Consider the Raiders DST a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into 2008.
News: New Raiders SS Gibril Wilson and former SS, now FS Michael Huff have each played both safety spots in practice so far, after Huff was primarily a strong safety his first two seasons. Huff appears more suited to free safety, where he doesn't have to contend with blocks with 300-pound lineman. Huff is very happy about the addition of Wilson; he said he wore down by about the 10th game of the season because he had to play against bigger opponents each week. Wilson likes what he sees in Huff, an athletic safety with speed and coverage skills. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin likes the flexibility he has with two players who have experience playing both positions. "I like where we're at with them and putting them in a number of positions and some that Michael's never been in here over his two years here," Kiffin said. "It'll be fun to see how that unfolds."
Analysis: Oakland boasts what might be the best secondary in the NFL with safeties Michael Huff and Gibril Wilson and cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall and Nnamdi Asomugha, and their front seven is slightly improved as well (they were already solid inside at linebacker). It's time to think about this DST as a sleeper option in 2008, worth a late-round pick as a No. 2 option in deeper drafts this summer.
News: The Raiders released safety Stuart Schweigert on Tuesday, cutting ties with a former starter who lost his job late last season. Schweigert, a third-round pick out of Purdue in 2004, became the starter at free safety midway through his second season in Oakland and started 37 consecutive games before being replaced last season. Schweigert struggled at times last season as a run-stopper and the Raiders set out to improve their tackling at safety this offseason by signing Gibril Wilson from the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Oakland also released LB Akbar Gbaja-BiamilaAnalysis: Both players were more than expendable following the moves made this offseason by the Raiders. Oakland boasts what might be the best secondary in the NFL with safeties Michael Huff and Gibril Wilson and cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall and Nnamdi Asomugha, and their front seven is slightly improved as well (they were already solid inside at linebacker). It's time to think about this DST as a sleeper option in 2008, worth a late-round pick as a No. 2 option in deeper drafts this summer.
News: The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports via CB DeAngelo Hall that the star cornerback is going to be traded to Oakland in exchange for second- and sixth-round picks. Hall is a two-time Pro Bowl selection, but he is nearly as well known for his outspoken demeanor. He clashed openly with former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino last season and was benched for a half after a sideline confrontation. Hall was the Falcons' No. 1 pick in 2004. He is scheduled to be in Oakland later this week to sign the deal. "There is just some tweaking of the language that needs to be done, some minor details," Hall said. "No deal breakers."
Analysis: Raiders owner Al Davis has always valued cornerbacks who can excel playing man-to-man coverage. Pairing Hall with Nnamdi Asomugha would give Oakland one of the top tandems in the game and perhaps the best for the Raiders since Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes helped the team win its last Super Bowl following the 1983 season. Hall will have some lapses with his coverage, but opposing offenses won't attack him like they would lesser cornerbacks. Tack on the addition of SS Gibril Wilson along with the relocating of Michael Huff to free safety, and the Raiders have one of the grittiest secondaries in the NFL. Already built in with a pair of strong inside linebackers and a good defensive line, it looks like Oakland could be in line to be at least a sleeper DST in 2008.
News: The Raiders signed free safety Gibril Wilson to a six-year, $39 million contract on Friday, again adding a player coming off a Super Bowl championship. Wilson's 284 solo tackles since entering the NFL in 2004 are the most of any safety during that span. The San Jose native had 70 tackles and a career-high four interceptions in 13 games for the Giants last season. He was a key member of the defense that shut down the Patriots in New York's 17-14 Super Bowl victory.
Analysis: The Raiders DST didn't do much in 2007 to help Fantasy owners. They finished the season with two defensive touchdowns, 18 interceptions, one safety, 27 sacks, eight fumble recoveries and 13 forced fumbles. Wilson should add to their bottom line but isn't a game-changing safety. Figure the Raiders DST to be at best a bye-week replacement in 2008.
News: The Raiders DST didn't do much in 2007 to help Fantasy owners. They finished the season with two defensive touchdowns, 18 interceptions, one safety, 27 sacks, eight fumble recoveries and 13 forced fumbles. On special teams, Chris Carr (22.5-yard average) was the leader on kickoff returns and Johnnie Lee Higgins (5.2-yard average) on punt returns, but they had no touchdowns. The Raiders likely will use the franchise tag on free agent Nnamdi Asomugha and will have to replace DL Warren Sapp, who is expected to retire, but they don't have any other potential holes to fill with their current players.
Analysis: Oakland needs to upgrade at linebacker and defensive line. They have a solid secondary with Thomas Howard, Asomugha and Michael Huff, but they need help. Don't plan on drafting the Raiders DST in 2008 but they could have potential if they address some of the problems up front and in the return game.
News: The Raiders DST held San Diego to 253 yards in Oakland's 30-17 loss to the Chargers in Week 17, but only forced one turnover and made one sack.
Analysis: The Raiders had trouble stopping the run all year, but held LaDainian Tomlinson to just 56 yards in Week 17, although Tomlinson didn't last much past the half and probably wasn't going at full tilt. The unit did start the year with pretty high hopes, but once teams found their weakness, they really lost all the Fantasy value they had coming into 2007.
News: The Raiders DST notched two sacks and an interception at Jacksonville in Week 16, but couldn't stop the Jaguars' running or passing game in a 49-11 blowout loss.
Analysis: The Raiders are no better than a No. 2 Fantasy DST when they host the Chargers in what will most likely be a meaningless game in Week 17. Forget about them.
News: The hosting Raiders limited the Colts to 21 points on 322 yards in Week 15, recording three sacks and an interception. Their special teams picked up 159 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has put together a couple decent weeks in a row, but we still wouldn't recommend using it in Fantasy for Week 16 at Jacksonville.
News: The Raiders DST had no sacks or fumble recoveries but did get an interception Sunday at Green Bay. Chris Carr had six kickoff returns for a 17.5-yard average, and Justin Griffith had one kickoff return for 11 yards. Tim Dwight had one punt return for 3 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has minimal Fantasy value and should not be used in Week 15 against the Colts.
News: The Raiders DST held Denver to 292 yards, forced four turnovers (two interceptions, two fumbles) and grabbed a sack in a 34-20 win over the Broncos in Week 13.
Analysis: Oakland took full advantage of Denver's errors in Week 13 and showed some of the promise that this sleeper DST unit had showed earlier this season. They might be worth a start in Week 14 against the Packers, but only if Brett Favre can't play with his injured arm.
News: The Raiders DST didn't do much at Kansas City in Week 12, totaling three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. They continued to be porous against the run, yielding 150 rush yards and two touchdowns to rookie Kolby Smith in his first start.
Analysis: The Raiders DST remains unusable in Fantasy play, including vs. Denver next week. Keep them on the waiver wire in all leagues.
News: The Raiders DST totaled three sacks, an interception and forced four fumbles at Minnesota in Week 11. They did allow 265 passing yards and 228 rush yards, however. Chester Taylor had 164 rush yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is not a recommended option any week, including at Kansas City in Week 12.
News: The Raiders DST will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday in Week 11. The Vikings' top offensive threat, Adrian Peterson, has a tear in his LCL and might not play. The Vikings have the 31st-ranked passing offense, so this could pose a problem.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is ranked 16th in total defense (fourth against the pass and 29th against the run). They don't get that many sacks, but they do force a few turnovers. Consider this DST in larger Fantasy leagues this week.
News: The Raiders defense did a nice job bottling up the Bears' offense for three quarters Week 10, but Chicago broke out for two fourth quarter touchdowns and won the game 17-6. Oakland limited Chicago to 296 yards, including 78 on the ground. The Raiders managed three sacks and one turnover on a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Raiders were without Nnamdi Asomugha and Fabian Washington against the Bears, but still managed to put forth a valiant effort. Oakland has a highly underrated defensive unit and the Raiders DST could be a one-week sleeper Week 11 against Minnesota, who might be without super rookie RB Adrian Peterson because of a knee injury.
News: Chicago hosts Oakland Sunday afternoon in a Week 10 matchup. Chicago has had a Super Bowl hangover this year, with their offense ranked just 26th overall (14th through the air and 31st on the ground).
Analysis: The Raiders DST is ranked 16th overall in total defense (fourth against the pass and 30th against the run). This is a pretty good matchup and the Raiders DST is one to consider if you own the Patriots, Texans or Buccaneers DSTs, who are on bye weeks.
News: The Raiders defense struggled at times Week 9 against the Texans and that allowed Houston to put 24 points on the scoreboard. Houston also racked up 359 total yards, including 178 yards on the ground. Oakland managed to sack QB Sage Rosenfels once and force an interception. They did receive a bit a bad news as top cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha left the game with a knee injury. A MRI is coming.
Analysis: The Raiders continue to apply a consistent pass rush since they are losing defensive linemen left and right. They do still have a solid pass defense, but without Asomugha, it could suffer. The Raiders are nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 10 against the Bears.
News: The Oakland Raiders have had trouble stopping the run all season. Now they have to fix that problem without their most consistent lineman. Tommy Kelly will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his right knee, the latest injury to hit Oakland's defensive line. Pro Bowl end Derrick Burgess missed two games earlier this season with a calf injury and tackle Gerard Warren is expected to miss his fourth straight game with an injured quadriceps Week 9 against Texans. Now it's Kelly who is out. "The train won't stop because he got hurt like that, so we have to keep going," defensive tackle Terdell Sands said.
Analysis: Kelly's play had impressed his teammates, with seven-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Warren Sapp predicting Kelly would be better than he has been by the end of his career. That's heady praise for a player who signed with the Raiders in 2004 as an undrafted and unheralded free agent from Mississippi State. Kelly had 27 solo tackles and one sack this season, moving back and forth between end and tackle with ease. With Warren and Kelly sidelined, the Raiders are down to six healthy defensive linemen on the active roster. Coach Lane Kiffin said he planned to bring in some players for tryouts Thursday and also could choose to activate Josh Shaw from the practice squad. The Raiders are nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 9.
News: The Raiders DST totaled two sacks of Vince Young in their Week 8 loss in Tennessee. They did not record another stat but did hold the Titans to 13 points and 42 passing yards. But they also allowed 192 rush yards.
Analysis: Oakland continues to be nothing more than a bye-week DST option for Fantasy owners. Think of them in that role when they host Houston in Week 9.
News: The Raiders DST will travel to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in Week 8. The Titans have the league's 19th-ranked total offense (28th in the air and fifth on the ground).
Analysis: The Raiders DST ranks 23rd in total defense, including 12th against the pass and 29th against the run. Obviously, the Titans will use their strength against the Raiders' weakness (the run). We don't recommend starting this unit in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Raiders allowed 12 points and 290 yards of offense in Week 7 vs. Kansas City. They recorded one interception and one sack.
Analysis: The Raiders haven't had a good season on either side of the ball, but they have some appeal as a bye-week replacement option. They'll face the Titans in Week 8 on the road.
News: Even a rookie coach can figure out what the Kansas City Chiefs will probably plan this week against the Oakland Raiders. With big, talented back Larry Johnson, who has had so much success over the years against Oakland, facing a defense that has been one of the league's worst teams at stopping the run, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin is prepared for a heavy dose of No. 27. "It's pretty easy to figure it out. When they run the ball well, they win for the most part. When they struggle to run the ball, they don't win," Kiffin said. "That's true a lot of times, but especially with them so far this season. Obviously, they're going to come in here and hand the ball off against our defense, so we need to be ready."
Analysis: And with starting defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Gerard Warren nursing injuries that kept them out of practice most of the week, the task could be even more difficult against a Kansas City (3-3) team that seems finally to be finding its groove in the running game. The Chiefs have won three of four games after an 0-2 start, topping 100 yards twice in the last three contests and scoring their first touchdown rushing in last week's 27-20 victory over Cincinnati. The numbers could get even better this week. The Raiders are giving up a league-worst 5.6 yards per carry and 144.8 per game, leading to a renewed focus on stopping the run against Kansas City. It is probably best to use other Fantasy DSTs Week 7 and keep the Raiders on the Fantasy bench.
News: Oakland hosts Kansas City for a Week 7 divisional matchup Sunday. The Chiefs rank 26th in total offense, including 17th through the air and 30th on the ground. They have allowed 18 sacks, which is higher than most teams.
Analysis: The Raiders DST ranks 26th in total defense (13th against the pass and 28th against the run). They have only seven sacks, as DE Derrick Burgess has been injured, but they do have nine interceptions. Consider this unit in larger Fantasy leagues if your alternative has a tougher matchup.
News: The Oakland Raiders DST allowed 28 points with 362 total net yards in Week 6 at San Diego in a loss. The Raiders also had just one interception, a 66-yard return for touchdown by Thomas Howard, while posting neither a sack or a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Raiders allowed 198 rushing yards and four touchdowns to LaDainian Tomlinson and it doesn't get that much easier in Week 7. A resurgent Larry Johnson and the Kansas City Chiefs pay a visit to the Black Hole, making the Raiders a poor Fantasy DST option.
News: The last two years, Derrick Burgess has been the Raiders' most productive defensive lineman. But with a lingering calf injury that began nearly a month ago, the Pro Bowl end is lucky just to get on the practice field. He's not the only Oakland defensive lineman hurting, either. Gerard Warren, who leads the team with three sacks and has been a force in the middle since moving into the lineup in Week 3, hasn't practiced since sustaining a thigh injury during a team drill last Thursday. Missing two starters up front is not exactly the way the Raiders want to face a potent San Diego offense coming off its most productive game of the year. "It is what it is," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday. "Guys will need to step up. We're prepared to go without them. It looks like it's going to go that way, so we'll have guys step up just like we would for any of our positions."
Analysis: If neither Burgess nor Warren is able to play against San Diego, the Raiders would be down to just six healthy defensive lineman. Rookie Jay Richardson has started the last two games in place of Burgess while Terdell Sands, who was benched to make way for Warren earlier this year, will likely get the call against the Chargers. The Raiders D ranks 26th in the NFL this year, which is surprising considering how they played last season. They are 22nd against the pass and 26th against the run. We do not recommend starting this unit in Week 6 of your Fantasy league.
News: The Raiders DST will get a chance to face the struggling Chargers offense in Week 6. San Diego ranks 18th in total offense (14th in the passing game and only 17th in the running game). They have allowed nine sacks, with six interceptions thrown.
Analysis: The Raiders DST ranks 26th in the NFL this year, which is surprising considering how they played last season. They are 22nd against the pass and 26th against the run. With Derrick Burgess hurt, they have been unable to get much going in the sacks department (seven), but they still have eight interceptions, which is top five in the NFL. We do not recommend starting this unit in Week 6 of your Fantasy league.
News: Cincinnati, Minnesota, Oakland and Philadelphia are all on bye weeks in Week 5.
Analysis: The Raiders DST rank 27th overall and they have yet to reflect what they did a year ago defensively. They are better used for good matchups and a bye-week replacement than as a weekly starter.
News: The Raiders DST had two interceptions (Thomas Howard and Stanford Routt) and two sacks (Tommy Kelly and Gerard Warren) Sunday against Miami. Chris Carr had four kickoff returns for 84 yards, and Johnnie Lee Higgins had two punt returns for 9 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders DST should not be used in Week 6 against San Diego following their bye in Week 5.
News: The Raiders DST will travel to play Miami in Week 4. Miami has a weak offense, averaging 20.3 points per game (18th in the NFL). They have allowed five sacks, while throwing five interceptions.
Analysis: The Raiders DST have six interceptions so far this season, which ranks them second to only Dallas. The Raiders have yet to tee off from a defensive standpoint, but they should have a nice game against the Fins. Start them in 12-team leagues if you don't have an elite unit or your usual DST is on a bye.
News: The Oakland Raiders DST allowed 24 points and 312 total net yards while picking up a sack and two interceptions in a win in Week 3 against Cleveland.
Analysis: Despite the decent performance, the Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 4 at Miami.
News: The Oakland Raiders DST allowed 23 points in its overtime loss at Denver in Week 2. The weekend was not a total loss, however, despite allowing 441 total net yards. Thomas Howard returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown and Gerard Warren sacked QB Jay Cutler in the end zone for a safety.
Analysis: The Raiders DST will have its hands full in Week 3 when they host the Browns, a team which scored 51 points in Week 2 against the Bengals at home.
News: The Raiders defense allowed just 17 points through three quarters Week 1 against the Lions. They fell apart in the fourth quarter, allowing 19 points. The Lions won 36-21. The Raiders yielded 392 yards, including 108 rushing yards and 284 passing yards. They did manage two sacks and two interceptions.
Analysis: The Raiders had a very good pass defense in 2006, but it was not evident Week 1 against the Lions. The Raiders have some real players on defense, but they struggle to put together consistent outings. They are nothing more than a possible sleeper Fantasy unit on a weekly basis. They face the Broncos in Week 2.
News: The Raiders aren't likely to have an edge on defense in most matchups, and they will likely give up points against the Lions this week. But Jon Kitna is known to be turnover prone, and that should favor the Raiders secondary, which had 18 interceptions last year.
Analysis: The Raiders DST played extremely well late last season, and that usually translates to early success the next year. The Lions aren't exactly an offensive juggernaut -- not yet anyway -- and so if the Raiders can get some pressure on Kitna, they could pull in a nice Fantasy points total at home on Sunday.
News: Raiders WR Johnnie Lee Higgins, who was selected in the third round of the draft, scored on a punt return Thursday night against Seattle and has played well at WR throughout training camp and in exhibition games, both receiving and on reverses, according to the Contra Costa Times. Higgins' emergence as the leading candidate on punt returns puts Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in a position where he likely has to keep both DB Chris Carr and Higgins because of Carr's value as a kick returner and backup cornerback.
Analysis: Higgins primary role will be on punt returns and special teams, and with his emergence and how well the Raiders DST played down the stretch, the Raiders DST is a sleeper in deep Fantasy leagues this year.
News: After three preseason games, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin still doesn't appear to be much closer to picking a starting quarterback. At least Kiffin can be reasonably certain that Oakland's defense is on its way to another solid season. Coordinator Rob Ryan's defense was the only acceptable aspect of the Raiders' 2-14 campaign in 2006, and the unit appeared to be just as strong in Oakland's 20-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Friday night. With Kiffin and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp devoting their time to figuring out the Raiders' once-feeble offense, the defense has remained a source of encouragement for the NFL's youngest head coach. "We need to establish a personality and an identity, and I really liked our aggressiveness," Kiffin said. "When we do things right on defense, it's hard to move the ball on us."
Analysis: Much of the starting lineup is back on a defense that managed to post respectable statistics despite repeatedly being put into tough situations by one of the worst offenses in NFL history. The unit appears to be back in form after limiting the Rams' first-team offense -- minus Stephen Jackson and Torry Holt, of course -- to 147 yards in the first half, and just three points in the first three quarters. The Raiders head into the season as a No. 2 Fantasy DST, but can play at times like a No. 1 option.
News: The Denver Broncos found a surprising trade partner to unload defensive tackle Gerard Warren: the Raiders. The Broncos shipped Warren to the Raiders on Monday for an undisclosed 2008 draft pick. Just one year ago, Warren was deemed the Broncos' best defensive linemen as evidenced by the six-year, $36 million contract he signed before injuries to both big toes led to an unproductive 2006 season. This year, he didn't fit in the system put in place by the new defensive boss Jim Bates.
Analysis: Warren's big body will fill a gap for Oakland and rotate along the D-line. He doesn't help the Raiders DST improve from being a No. 2 DST for Fantasy play. Continue to view the Silver and Black as a nice bye-week replacement option.
News: The Raiders cut defensive end Bryant McNeal and linebacker Kurt Campbell. McNeal was arrested last week on an outstanding warrant following a traffic stop in South Carolina. McNeal, a 27-year-old reserve, was wanted in Florida for selling a Land Rover to a pawn broker for $15,000 when he didn't own it, according to police in Clearwater, Fla.
Analysis: McNeal signed with Tampa Bay in December 2004 and was cut before the next season began. He was signed to the Raiders' practice squad last season. Neither he or Campbell should be bothered with in IDP leagues.
News: The Raiders signed safety Donovin Darius, bolstering a unit that was the strongest on the team during a difficult season last year. The Raiders had the NFL's third-ranked overall defense and No. 1 ranked pass defense last year, despite finishing with an NFL-worst 2-14 record. Darius, who turns 32 next month, had been a mainstay in Jacksonville's secondary, but the Jaguars released him in June as they try to get younger and faster on defense. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin worked with Darius previously when he was Jacksonville's defensive quality control coach in 2000. "He will bring us strong competition and he gives us added flexibility in our secondary," Kiffin said. "Donovin exemplifies hard work and dedication to the game. Working with Donovin at Jacksonville, I was able to see what a phenomenal competitor he is. He will fit great into our team philosophy."
Analysis: Darius could challenge incumbent starter Stuart Schweigert for playing time, adding veteran leadership to a young secondary. Michael Huff, the team's first-round pick in 2006, is at one safety position, while 2005 first-rounder Fabian Washington and 2003 first-rounder Nnamdi Asomugha are entrenched at cornerback. He finished his career in Jacksonville with 614 tackles, 14 interceptions, eight forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and two sacks, but he also missed 14 games because of a torn knee ligament in 2005. Then he started 10 games a year ago before breaking his leg Nov. 20. This only helps the Raiders DST's case of being a good No. 2 option in 2007 Fantasy play, worthy of being a bye-week option so long as the matchup is safe.
News: Colin Branch believes his biggest strength as an NFL safety is his versatility. He's comfortable playing strong or free safety, in coverage or against the run, and can contribute on special teams. It's those qualities that attracted the Oakland Raiders to Branch. After signing him as a free agent last week, Branch joined the Raiders on Monday for the start of their voluntary minicamp. That versatility is especially important for the Raiders, who are keeping their safeties on the same side of the field instead of switching from strong to weak side. "I'm a veteran guy, been around, been on a winning program out there at Carolina. Hopefully I can bring a little bit of that here," Branch said. "Hopefully I can be a versatile guy who can do a lot of different things for them, which seems to be what they're asking me to do. Hopefully it'll open up my horizons a little bit and hopefully show people I can do more than just one thing."
Analysis: Branch is currently competing for playing time behind starters Michael Huff and Stuart Schweigert in a secondary that was one of the few bright spots for Oakland last season. Defensively, the Raiders did not add much talent via free agency or the draft, but their D was pretty good last year when they weren't put in bad spots by their awful offense. Consider the Raiders DST a bye-week replacement unit when they face a good matchup. You can probably find them on the waiver wire at the start of the season.
News: The Raiders have signed two of their potential unrestricted free agents, agreeing to contracts with defensive tackle Terdell Sands and linebacker Robert Thomas. The team did not announce the signings, but the contracts were listed on the NFL Players Association Web site. Sands played in all 16 games last season, recording 30 solo tackles, one sack and one interception. Thomas finished the season with 27 solo tackles and could compete for a starting job in 2007.
Analysis: Neither player makes the Raiders DST any more appealing. They remain a No. 2 Fantasy DST, worth only a selection in the deepest of Fantasy Football drafts in 2007.
News: While the Raiders did hire Greg Knapp to be their offensive coordinator, Rob Ryan is returning for a fourth season as defensive coordinator in Oakland after helping the Raiders become the No. 3-ranked defense in the NFL last season. Ryan was a candidate for the head coaching job, but that went to USC assistant Lane Kiffin.
Analysis: Ryan's coaching and Oakland's plethora of talent on defense -- especially in the secondary -- will make them a sleeper unit to own in 2007 Fantasy league play. If the offense improves, it will make the DST even more efficient and useful next season.
News: The Raiders allowed 23 points and 266 yards of total offense in Week 17 at the N.Y. Jets. They could not force any turnovers in the game and got only one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Raiders have a solid pass defense to build around, but are still a few moves away from being a recommended Fantasy defense for 2007.
News: The Raiders defense held the Chiefs to just 20 points and 292 yards in Week 16. The Raiders had just two sacks (DL Warren Sapp and DL Kevin Huntley) and one interception (DB Nnamdi Asomugha) in a losing effort.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has been the one constant for the team in what is turning out to be a season to forget about. Consider them a possible one-week sleeper DST against the Jets in Week 17. Sapp is a solid Fantasy DL with nine sacks on the season. Also, if you haven't added Asomugha to your Fantasy lineup, do yourself a favor and make sure to pick him up for the season finale. The kid has eight interceptions on the season and gets very little respect playing for the Raiders.
News: The Oakland Raiders DST allowed 20 points and 251 total net yards in Week 15 against the Rams. The Raiders also racked up four sacks, but did not have any interceptions of fumble recoveries.
Analysis: It doesn't get any easier for the Raiders, as they will have to try and wrangle RB Larry Johnson and the Chiefs in Week 16 at Arrowhead Stadium.
News: The Raiders wound up losing 27-10 to the Bengals in Week 14, but not before their defense got some shots in. DB Nnamdi Asomugha had two interceptions and DB Fabian Washington also picked off Bengals QB Carson Palmer. The Bengals did rack up 439 yards of offense, bringing the Raiders back down to Earth.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has been a pretty good unit over the past few weeks, but outside of three turnovers, they got whooped in total yards and points. The Rams are capable of putting up a lot of yards and points, so it is not recommended you use the Raiders DST in Week 15. Asomugha is a great Fantasy DB as he now has seven interceptions on the season. Washington could be used more as a low-end option.
News: While the defense has performed at a playoff caliber most of the season, all the players have to show for it are a few good statistics. Oakland is third overall defensively and first in net yards passing allowed per game. "The thing is, we just always look at it as, we still have a lot to play for," DB Stuart Schweigert said. "Even though we're not making the playoffs and all that stuff, we want to finish in the top three in overall defense and we want to finish number one in pass defense. Right now we're doing that, so we want to continue doing that for the next four weeks."
Analysis: The Raiders DST is overlooked in most Fantasy leagues due to the team's overall poor performance, but they are a decent option, especially when they face a favorable matchup like they did in Week 13 against Houston. They limited QB David Carr and the Texans to negative-5 yards net passing and they scored a touchdown. That is five strong defensive showings in a row, but they will be put to the test in Week 14 at Cincinnati.
News: The Oakland defense returned a fumble for a touchdown and totaled five sacks and three forced fumbles vs. Houston in Week 13. They also held Houston to 32 passing yards!
Analysis: The Raiders defense should be benched or cut in all leagues when they play at Cincinnati in Week 14.
News: The Raiders gave up just 260 total yards and 21 points against the Chargers in Week 12. DL Derrick Burgess and DL Thomas Kelly both had 1/2 sack. While DB Nnamdi Asomugha had an interception.
Analysis: The Raiders defense have now had four straight solid defensive performances and are starting to turn heads. They are still considered a low-end Fantasy DST, but they could be viewed as a one-week sleeper DST against the Texans in Week 13. Burgess and Asomugha are both solid Fantasy options in IDP leagues.
News: The Raiders defense gave up two rushing touchdowns to Larry Johnson in Week 11, but for the most part played pretty stingy defense against the Chiefs and only gave up 292 total yards. They managed to sack QB Trent Green twice, but forced no turnovers. Sacks went to DB Nmandi Asomugha and DL Lance Johnstone.
Analysis: The Raiders defense has now posted three consecutive solid performances, but with the Chargers looming in Week 12, it is not recommended you use the Raiders DST for Fantasy purposes. Asomugha is developing into a nice defensive back and could be used as a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Raiders defense allowed only 17 points and 264 total net yards in Week 10 against the Broncos. They were able to amass two sacks and three interceptions in the narrow loss.
Analysis: The Raiders DST has played well the past two weeks, but they are not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 11 against RB Larry Johnson and the Chiefs in Kansas City.
News: QB Aaron Brooks, RB Adimchinobe Echemandu, LB Isaiah Ekejiuba, OT Robert Gallery, DE Kevin Huntley, WR Johnnie Morant, OG Barry Sims and DB Duane Starks are inactive for Week 10 against the Broncos.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned are worth using in any Fantasy leagues for Week 11 at Kansas City.
News: The Raiders DST stood tall in Week 9 at Seattle, allowing just 16 points and 371 total net yards. They were also good for three sacks, although they did not record any interceptions or fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Raiders DST might be a decent Fantasy option for Week 10 against Denver if your primary option has a difficult matchup.
News: The Oakland Raiders declared TE James Adkisson, QB Aaron Brooks (shoulder), OG Brad Badger, RB Adimchinobe Echemandu, DL Kevin Huntley, WR Johnnie Morant, OG Barry Sims and CB Duane Starks inactive for Week 9 at Seattle.
Analysis: Only Brooks has any Fantasy appeal when healthy and even that is minimal at this time.
News: DB Nnamdi Asomugha returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown and DB Chris Carr returned one 100 yards for a touchdown as the Raiders upset the Steelers 20-13 in Week 8. The Steelers racked up 360 yards but could not overcome four interceptions thrown by QB Ben Roethlisberger. DB Fabian Washington and LB Kirk Morrison had the other interceptions. The Raiders defense also harrassed Roethlisberger for five sacks on the day. DL Derrick Burgess had 2 1/2 to run his total to 7 1/2 on the season. DL Thomas Kelly had 1 1/2 sacks and DL Warren Sapp had the other. Asomugha and Morrison both led the team in tackles with nine.
Analysis: Don't get too excited. This is by far the best performance the Raiders defense has turned in this season. They do have the league's best pass defense, but somehow they still managed to get beat on a weekly basis. They are worth keeping an eye on, but they are not a recommended Fantasy DST for Week 9 against the Seahawks. Asomugha has turned into a surprising IDP player and could be used as a viable No. 2 or No. 3 DB. Morrison and Burgess as solid Fantasy uses. While Sapp and Kelly are marginal Fantasy players and should be used when the matchup is favorable. Carr and Washington are not recommended IDP players.
News: TE James Adkisson, OG Brad Badger, QB Aaron Brooks, RB Adimchinobe Echemandu, G Corey Hulsey, DE Kevin Huntley, LB Grant Irons and CB Duane Starks
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above, with the exception of Brooks when he is healthy, is worth using in any Fantasy league.
News: The Oakland Raiders allowed just 13 points and 235 total net yards in Week 6 at Denver. They also two sacks, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Raiders DST is not a recommended Fantasy option in Week 7 against Arizona despite a fairly favorable matchup.
News: The Oakland Raiders announced TE James Adkisson (groin), G Brad Badger, G Corey Hulsey, DE Kevin Huntley, LB Grant Irons and CB Fabian Washington are all inactive for Week 6 at Denver.
Analysis: QB Aaron Brooks (shoulder) is also listed as the team's emergency quarterback. Only Brooks is worth a look in Fantasy leagues if he can re-gain his starting job.
News: The Oakland Raiders might be pushed back in Week 7 if the Athletics make the World Series. Game 2 would be played there on Sunday, Oct. 22, so the game between the Cardinals and Raiders would be played on Monday.
Analysis: Well, so far the Athletics are not off to a good start, as they lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series by a 5-1 score. However, keep this in mind, as the Raiders might be pushed back in Week 7.
News: The Oakland Raiders gave up 34 points and 330 yards in a Week 5 loss to the 49ers. They could not sack 49ers QB Alex Smith but they did force one interception.
Analysis: The Raiders defense, much like their offense, has been inconsistent this season. They have their good weeks, but then they have their bad weeks. Consider them a decent bye-week replacement DST for Week 6 at Denver.
News: The Raiders DST allowed 24 points and 283 total net yards in Week 4 against the Browns. They also had two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions in the loss. LB Sam Williams also had a 30-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Raiders might be a decent bye-week replacement for their Week 5 game at San Francisco, as team which was shutout in Week 4 at Kansas City.

Nothing much for Raiders DST
News: The Oakland Raiders DST allowed 27 points in Monday's regular season opener against the Chargers. They did not record a fumble recovery, interception or sack while they allowed 302 total net yards.

Raiders DST tries to stop run
News: In 10 games against the Raiders, San Diego RB LaDainian Tomlinson has averaged 27 carries and 122 yards, with a high of 243 yards on Dec. 28, 2003. So defensive tackle Warren Sapp's strategy is to put the pressure on Phillip Rivers, the third-year quarterback who replaced Brees. "If they have it in their minds this is going to be a tough night to run the ball, then they're going to look to their young quarterback and say, 'The game is on you son. You've got to win it,'" Sapp said. "And who knows what that will take."
Analysis: The Raiders DST is a bad option this week against the Chargers. They should be considered nothing more than a bye week replacement in most Fantasy leagues at this point.

Raiders DST adds Danny Clark
News: The New Orleans Saints signed former Oakland Raiders linebacker Danny Clark on Tuesday and released veteran safety Jay Bellamy to make room on the roster.

S Huff nursing ankle sprain
News: First-round draft pick Michael Huff will be doubtful for the Oakland Raiders' exhibition game Friday night because of a sprained left ankle. "Huff is a little sore," coach Art Shell said Monday. "He's doubtful for the game. Hopefully he'll be ready by next week, if not, then by the opener. You want to be careful with that."
Analysis: Huff's a hard-hitting safety with tremendous skills against the pass, and he has leadership qualities that could help him emerge as a fan favorite in Oakland. Despite his addition, the Raiders DST is nothing more than a bye week replacement in most Fantasy leagues at this point.

Oakland's defense surprising
News: Despite looking weak against the Eagles in the Hall of Fame Game and iffy against Minnesota, the Raiders defense shined against the 49ers in the team's home preseason debut. They rank sixth overall in total defense in the NFL this preseason, allowing 236.7 yards per game and 10.0 points per game.
Analysis: Here's all we have to say: It's the preseason. New head coach Art Shell is probably overworking his crew so that they give a good effort in this campaign in hopes of it carrying over into the regular season. But when that time comes, the competition will be very different (and much better skilled). There's not much to like about Oakland's defense this season and owners are advised to let this unit go undrafted, using them only as a bye-week replacement when the matchup is right.

S Michael Huff injured Sunday
News: S Michael Huff left Sunday's preseason game against the 49ers due to an injury left ankle. The first-round pick in 2006 recorded a solo tackle and he had an interception in the win.
Analysis: Huff's status is uncertain. He's a hard-hitting safety with tremendous skills against the pass, and he has leadership qualities that could help him emerge as a fan favorite in Oakland. Despite his addition, the Raiders DST is nothing more than a bye week replacement in most Fantasy leagues at this point.

Raiders' No. 1 unit looks awful

FS Huff signs rookie deal
News: Oakland first-round pick Michael Huff, a free safety from Texas, agreed to a five-year contract with a reported $15 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter. Huff was in Raiders camp on time. ... In other Raider news, head coach Art Shell has named rookie LB Thomas Howard a starter. Howard will play on the weak side.
Analysis: Though Oakland's defense still has lots of holes, Huff should help. He will greatly improve the Raiders' pass defense and also assist against the run. Oakland's DST remains a bye-week replacement unit only at this point.

OAK addresses D in draft
News: With the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Raiders selected Texas safety/cornerback Michael Huff, the third defensive player taken and the first defensive back. In fact, he was the consensus top-ranked DB before the draft. Oakland also took UTEP OLB Thomas Howard and USC SS Darnell Bing.
Analysis: Oakland's defense is on the rise thanks to these picks, but concerns on the line still keep the Raiders DST from being even a sleeper unit in 2006. They may be usable as a bye-week replacement if they show signs of life during the year.
News: According to reports, the Oakland Raiders have reached a two-year contract agreement with DE Lance Johnstone.

Oakland's defense atrocious
News: The Raiders DST, which was expected to be bad going into 2005, met their poor predictions precisely. Ranked as a bottom-five unit in most leagues, the Raiders had an NFL-low five interceptions and finished with just 19 takeaways. They did not score once on defense or special teams.
Analysis: Oakland needs a lot of help, but they will have a lot of young talent ready to explode in 2006. Don't totally write them off just yet, but don't expect a big turnaround either.

Woodson to miss opener?
News: According to the San Francisco Chronicle, new Oakland coach Norv Turner thinks the holdout of Charles Woodson may jeopardize his chances of starting week one of the regular season. "Obviously the longer it goes the harder it is," Turner said. "I've been in situations where a guy came in in a week and could contribute and play. But that was a situation where the guy had been in the same system and knew the calls, knew everything. Obviously when Charles gets here it's going to be harder. It's all new for him."
