News: The Redskins' signing of former Giants quarterback Andre' Woodson to their practice squad on Sunday has New York coach Tom Coughlin and players thinking the move is as sinister as a twist in a novel. Woodson spent all of last season on the Giants' practice squad and was among New York's final cuts this weekend. He knows all the plays and, even worse, all the audible calls. Coughlin was blunt in saying it was obvious why Woodson was signed. "I have been a part of it," Coughlin said Monday when asked whether he has ever signed a player released by a team he was about to play. "I have seen it done. A guy doesn't get in the door two seconds, and he is in a classroom being grilled." The cloak and dagger decision will force the Giants to change some audible calls for Eli Manning, Coughlin said.
Analysis: Interesting stuff, but it's not like Woodson will be a useful Fantasy option anytime soon. Keep him off rosters.
News: The Giants have cut QBs Rhett Bomar and Andre Woodson.
Analysis: Both of these guys will likely find themselves on a practice squad somewhere, but have zero Fantasy value at this time.
News: The Daily News reports Giants QB Andre Woodson is ready for the competition for the No. 3 spot with rookie Rhett Bomar, who was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. "I know this is the NFL and you've got to compete for your spot," Woodson said Monday. "So that's what I'm doing." Woodson did well at the team's recent mini-camp in which he impressed Tom Coughlin by "(taking) more charge of the drills" and showing some progress from his sometimes shaky rookie year. He also showed off a new body, down 22 pounds from the 242 he weighed when he arrived last spring, and promised - on the orders of the coaching staff - to drop another five.
Analysis: Woodson spent last year on the practice squad but will find it tough to beat out Bomar to be the No. 3 guy behind Eli Manning and David Carr. Still, Bomar could be a candidate for the practice squad this year, which means Woodson could be the No. 3/emergency QB. Still, neither QB has much Fantasy value this season, and both should be ignored in the majority of leagues.
News: The New York Post reports the Giants will start the battle for the No. 3 QB spot behind Eli Manning and David Carr in their first mini-camp in May. Rhett Bomar, a fifth-round pick from Sam Houston State who started 11 games for Oklahoma in 2005 before transferring, will battle Andre Woodson, a sixth-round pick last year out of Kentucky. Woodson was not impressive last summer and spent the season on the practice squad. "We still like Woodson," GM Jerry Reese said. "I know people will start to write him off right away, but that is not true. Who knows how long David Carr will be here? So there will be a lot of competition at that position. It was too much value at the time for us to pass (Bomar) up."
Analysis: Look for Bomar to win the job, but neither QB has much Fantasy value this year. Manning will remain the starter, and Carr should be the No. 2 guy for at least 2009. Ignore Bomar and Woodson in all leagues.
News: The Giants drafted former Oklahoma starter Rhett Bomar in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Bomar threw 10 touchdowns in 12 games as a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma in 2005. He was dismissed by the team in August 2006 for receiving compensation for a job he was not working. Bomar enrolled at Sam Houston and played the past two seasons, throwing 37 touchdowns, including 27 this past season. "It was too much value at the time to pass him up," GM Jerry Reese said, adding that the Giants have not written off Andre Woodson, who spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad. The Giants only kept two quarterbacks on the roster last season - Eli Manning and David Carr.
Analysis: Look for Bomar to compete with Woodson for the No. 3 spot, but neither is worth drafting in any leagues at this time. As long as Manning and Carr are on the roster, there won't be many passing yards available for Bomar or Woodson.
News: Quarterback Andre Woodson, the sixth-round draft pick who spent the season on New York's practice squad, was among nine free agents signed by the Giants on Thursday. The Giants signed six other members of their practice squad: receivers Taye Biddle and Micah Rucker, tight end Martrez Milner and defensive back Travonti Johnson. Also signed was running back Dwayne Wright.
Analysis: None of these players are any better than longshots to make the final roster. Don't expect to draft them in 2009.
News: Quarterback Andre Woodson and linebackers Bryan Kehl and Jonathan Goff were signed by the New York Giants on Tuesday. A sixth-round pick, Woodson started 39 games at Kentucky, completing 791 of 1,278 passes for 9,360 yards, 79 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. His 9,360 passing yards rank second in Kentucky history, topped only by Jared Lorenzen's 10,354 yards from 2000-03. Lorenzen was waived by the Giants on Monday. Kehl of Brigham Young was a fourth-round draft pick. The outside linebacker played in 48 games with 26 starts and finished his career with 205 tackles and seven sacks. Goff, a middle linebacker from Vanderbilt, was a fifth-round pick. He played in 46 games and finished his career with 307 tackles, 15 1/2 tackles for loss, 6 1/2 sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Woodson is a long-term project QB and might not ever be anything more than a backup passer, and the other rookies will have to cut their teeth on special teams before getting a look in a starting lineup. No one listed above is expected to hold down a significant role in 2008, making them all irrelevant for Fantasy play for the upcoming season.
News: QB Andre Woodson was sidelined by injury Saturday during the New York Giants' minicamp for rookies and free agents. Woodson pulled a quad muscle in his left leg a short time later. The injury happened as the sixth-round draft pick from Kentucky was scrambling to his left during an 11-on-11 drill. "I don't know what happened," Woodson said. "I'm kind of disappointed I'm not out there for my first minicamp. I just can't wait to get back out there and do some good things." Woodson threw an interception on his first pass in minicamp on Friday, but he felt he improved a lot in the second workout in the afternoon.
Analysis: Woodson will likely be fine for the start of training camp, but keep an eye on what develops. He is expected to be the No. 3 QB for the Giants if he makes the team. Woodson has minimal Fantasy value heading into 2008 and should not be drafted in most scoring formats.
News: The Giants drafted WR Mario Manningham in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Manningham is expected to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver spot with the Giants with Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss and David Tyree in 2008. Manningham, from Michigan, will eventually be the successor to Amani Toomer -- or so Giants fan hope. The Giants also drafted QB Andre Woodson from Kentucky in the sixth round.
Analysis: Manningham had plenty of issues in college, but he is hopeful for a fresh start with the Giants. Consider him a deep sleeper in seasonal Fantasy leagues and a middle-round selection in keeper formats. Woodson has minimal Fantasy value at this time and should not be drafted in seasonal leagues. In keeper formats, consider Woodson a low-end draft pick.
