News: Cincinnati added to its already bursting collection of cornerbacks by taking Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick with the 17th overall pick. Kirkpatrick only had three interceptions in three seasons at Alabama but held down the shutdown corner for the national champions. The team also added Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still, Clemson defensive tackles Brandon Thompson, Iowa cornerback Shaun Prater and Boise State safety George Iloka.
Analysis: The Bengals have built themselves a heck of a secondary with Kirkpatrick joining free agents Jason Allen and Terence Newman in a corps that already includes Leon Hall, Nate Clements and Pacman Jones. And the addition of Still to their defensive line should help against the run. Quietly, the Bengals DST has become a good unit, albeit not one you should go out of your way to draft. Figure them to be available off waivers and a capable defense worth using as a one-week replacement throughout the season.
News: Cincinnati's late-season issues defending the run started rearing its head early in the Bengals' matchup at Houston in the AFC Wild Card round on Saturday. The defense was unable to prevent more damage throughout the game and surrendered 188 rushing yards during Cincinnati's 31-10 loss. Texans RB Arian Foster finished with 153 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, another disturbing outing against a Bengals unit that had allowed 131.6 yards per game in the last six regular season contests.
Analysis: The Cincinnati defense had not allowed more than 145 yards in its first 15 games, but imploded in the final two outings, including Saturday. A week after yielding 228 rushing yards to the Ravens, the Bengals were tagged for two touchdowns on the ground, highlighted by Foster's 42-yard run in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati also struggled pressuring rookie QB T.J Yates and recorded only two late sacks with no interceptions. The Bengals showed improvement this season and should be a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST option in 2012 drafts.
News: The Bengals DST could not stop Baltimore RB Ray Rice on Sunday in the Week 17 regular-season finale. The Bengals DST allowed Rice nearly 200 rushing yards as they gave up 347 total yards in the game and lost 24-16. The Bengals DST could not force a single turnover in the game and managed just one sack.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has been a solid Fantasy option for much of the season with eight efforts in double-digit Fantasy production. They ended the season on a down note, but did manage to make the playoffs nevertheless. The Bengals DST will be a decent unit for the Fantasy playoffs as it has been all year.
News: The Bengals DST enters the Week 17 regular-season finale against Baltimore coming off two solid performances. The unit has given up just 29 points with four turnovers forced and eight sacks in the last two games. That said, those games were against the Rams and Cardinals. The Ravens should pose a much stiffer test Week 17.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has certainly been getting to the quarterback. The unit has 16 sacks in the last four games. That said, the Bengals DST has not been consistent this season. They come up with few big plays and just have not bene overly opportune. There are better units available for Week 17. Consider the Bengals DST more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: After dominating Saturday's game for the first three quarters, the Cincinnati defense faltered late and surrendered 16 points in the final period. However, the Bengals held on for a 23-16 victory in Week 16 after recording five sacks on Cardinals QB John Skelton. Cincinnati didn't allow Arizona to cross midfield until Skelton completed a pass with 13:25 remaining in the game. The Bengals now have 13 sacks in their past three games.
Analysis: Arizona has rallied from fourth-quarter deficits six times this season -- one shy of the NFL record -- but was unable to get past Cincinnati in the fourth quarter on Saturday. The Bengals have been one of the best teams at reaching the quarterback this season and registered multiple sacks in 12 of their 15 games. Fantasy owners should view Cincinnati as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 17 against Baltimore. The Bengals permitted 31 points to the Ravens during the teams' previous meeting this season.
News: After creating several turnovers during the beginning of the season, Cincinnati has been held without a takeaway in two of its past three games. The Bengals will look to improve their fortunes against mistake-prone Arizona in Week 16. The Cardinals are expected to start QB John Skelton, who has thrown 10 interceptions over his past five games, including four outings with multiple picks.
Analysis: The biggest mismatch for Cincinnati will be in the pass rush, as Arizona enters 31st in the NFL in sacks-allowed per pass play. The Bengals, meanwhile, rank sixth in the league in defensive sacks per pass play. A total of 15 different Cincinnati players have notched a sack this season. With the Bengals expected to employ a heavy blitz, Skelton could be land on the ground often. Consider Cincinnati a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 16.
News: With St. Louis starting QB Kellen Clemens in Week 15, the Cincinnati defense saw an opportune time to add to its impressive sack total. The Bengals recorded three sacks and held the Rams to just six points for the first 58 minutes during a 20-13 victory on Sunday. Cincinnati allowed Clemens' only touchdown pass with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Bengals held their sixth opponent this season to less than 20 points.
Analysis: Cincinnati wasn't overly impressive against lowly St. Louis as the defense failed to create a turnover for the second time in the past three weeks. The Bengals did shine on special teams as WR Brandon Tate's 56-yard punt return in the third quarter gave him 481 punt return yards this season, a new franchise single-season record. Consider Cincinnati a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 16 against Arizona.
News: After registering five sacks against Houston last Sunday, the Cincinnati defense is now tied for sixth in the NFL for total sacks (36). The Bengals are on pace for 44 sacks, which would be a record high since coach Marvin Lewis arrived in 2003. The rejuvenated Cincinnati defense will attempt to add to its impressive total against lowly St. Louis in Week 15. The Rams have allowed a league-high 46 sacks this season.
Analysis: Making matters worse for St. Louis is the fact that the Rams could start Kellen Clemens under center as QB Sam Bradford is considered doubtful for Sunday. The Bengals will certainly look to blitz him throughout the game and they could come away with multiple turnovers for the second week in a row. (They forced a season-high four turnovers against Houston.) Consider Cincinnati a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 15.
News: The Bengals DST could not keep the Texans from moving the ball, as they allowed them to pile up 412 yards of offense in a Week 14 loss. However, they held the Texans to just 20 points -- nearly six points below their per-game average -- and they forced four turnovers. The Bengals recovered three fumbles and they intercepted Texans QB T.J. Yates once. They also sacked Yates five times, tying their season-high sack total.
Analysis: The Bengals did catch a break, facing Houston when they were playing a third-string quarterback and missing star receiver Andre Johnson. They could fare even better in Week 15, as they will face the Rams who entered this week as the NFL's lowest-scoring team. That could make the Bengals DST worth a try in many leagues where reliable options are unavailable.
News: The Bengals coughed up 35 points to the Steelers in Week 13, and they could have a hard time containing their next opponent, the Texans. While Houston's passing game should not be up to snuff, with T.J. Yates starting at quarterback and WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) possibly sitting out, the Bengals' defense could still have a hard time stopping the league's fifth highest-scoring team.
Analysis: The Bengals' strength is in stopping the run, but the Texans boast the league's third most prolific rushing attack. While the Bengals DST could prevail in this matchup of strengths, it's too risky to rely on them in most leagues. For Week 14, view the Bengals as a No. 2 DST unit.
News: The Bengals DST got hammered in Week 13 at the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns to Mike Wallace, Rashard Mendenhall rumbled for two more and Antonio Brown scored on a punt return. The Steelers scored 35 points and totaled 295 total yards. The Bengals did register three sacks, and to be fair, played this game without DE Carlos Dunlap and CB Nate Clements.
Analysis: It's not going to get much easier for the Bengals in Week 14 when the Texans' rushing machine comes to town. They're not going to be awful given the likelihood that Andre Johnson will miss the game and QB T.J. Yates will start, but you should be able to do better.
News: This isn't a good week to start the Bengals DST. They play at Pittsburgh against a Steelers team they've had a hard time with. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is 12-4 all-time against the Bengals and though he hasn't shelled them with stats has been a problem for them. The Steelers are averaging 21.2 points per game and 374.5 yards per game.
Analysis: Roethlisberger might turn the ball over once and could get sacked a couple of times, but realistically the Steelers should put up some points and keep the Bengals defense at bay. We'd consider the Broncos and Titans DSTs, among others, ahead of the Bengals this week.
News: The Bengals defense held Cleveland to a second-half field goal and that allowed the offense to rally for a 23-20 win in Week 12. Cincinnati allowed Cleveland to jump out to a 17-7 halftime lead behind two passing touchdowns from Colt McCoy. But the Bengals made the right halftime adjustments and Phil Dawson's 54-yard field goal in the third quarter would be Cleveland's only scoring drive in the second half. Cleveland finished with 274 yards (134 rushing). Cincinnati forced one turnover and had two sacks.
Analysis: It appeared early in the game Week 12 that Cincinnati was going to miss CB Leon Hall (Achilles') again after Baltimore torched the Bengals secondary in Week 11. But the Bengals finally figured out how to slow down the Browns passing attack and it paid off with a win. A bigger challenge awaits in Week 13 at Pittsburgh, but the Bengals DST is still a decent starting Fantasy option. It could be a good defensive battle next week.
News:The Sports Xchange reports in its first game in five seasons without Leon Hall, the Bengals' secondary continued to struggle with big pass plays. In Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Ravens, Cincinnati gave up five pass plays of 20 yards or more, two of which resulted in touchdowns. Baltimore's Torrey Smith had 165 yards, which is the most an opposing receiver has had against them since Atlanta's Roddy White had 201 yards last year. Clements said the Bengals didn't change anything without Hall, but with 16 pass plays of 20-plus yards given up over the past four games, they do have to play better. "We have to be more aggressive and challenge better," he said. "We still had an opportunity to pull it out, which is what makes it disappointing. We had plenty of opportunities."
Analysis: With back-to-back seven-point losses to the Steelers and Ravens, the Bengals are 6-4 going into this week's game against Cleveland. Lucky for them, the Browns aren't a big-play team. Cleveland is averaging just 205.0 passing yards per game. The Bengals beat the Browns, 27-17, in Week 1. Cleveland managed just 285 yards (83 rushing), while Cincinnati recorded two sacks and one turnover. Cincinnati has been a solid defensive unit all season, so consider the Bengals DST a viable Fantasy start Week 12.
News: The Bengals DST came up just short against Baltimore in Week 11. The DST held the Ravens to 373 total yards, but Baltimore still managed to win the game 31-24. The Bengals DST forced just one turnover in the game on a Joe Flacco interception. The Bengals DST picked up just one sack in the performance.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has now put together three straight poor performances since having a huge one Week 8 at Seattle. The Bengals DST has not been forcing enough turnovers, though they have continued to sack the quarterback with regularity. The real issue is the defense hasn't been as opportune with DTDs as they had been earlier in the season. Heading into Week 12 against Cleveland, however, we fell the Bengals DST could have a bounce-back game. Consider them a unit worth starting in many Fantasy formats.
News: Cincinnati travels to Baltimore for Week 11 and the Bengals DST is coming off back-to-back below-par efforts against Tennessee and Pittsburgh. The good news Week 10 was five sacks on QB Ben Roethlisberger. The bad news was 328 yards and 24 points allowed in a loss. The Ravens do allow the 10th-most Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units.
Analysis: Baltimore has surrendered a turnover or two and at least one sack in every game this season since Week 1. The Bengals DST has definitely been getting to the quarterback, but has still struggled to give Fantasy owners consistent production lately. The unit was downright awesome with four DTDs scored in three games from Week 5 through Week 8, but the Ravens don't make that many big mistakes on offense. Consider the Bengals DST just a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 11.
News: The Bengals DST gave up the game-winning touchdown run to Rashard Mendenhall of the Steelers with just under two minutes remaining to play in the Week 10 contest on Sunday. The Bengals DST fell just short in the game as the Steelers came away winners, 24-17. The Bengals DST allowed 328 yards of offense to the Steelers in the game, and only forced one turnover. That turnover was on an interception thrown by QB Ben Roethlisberger. The Bengals DST got to Big Ben five times in the game and Robert Geathers had 1.5 of those sacks.
Analysis: The Bengals DST had been one of the better Fantasy units around until the last two weeks against the Steelers and Titans. The five sacks on Sunday match a season high, but the Bengals DST could not pull the win. Still, the Bengals DST has been a top-notch unit this season and that should continue Week 11 at Baltimore.
News: Despite boasting one of the top defenses in the NFL, Cincinnati has been exploited in recent weeks through the air. After going six games without allowing more than 225 yards passing, the Bengals have surrendered 647 yards through the air against Seattle and Tennessee combined. The defense will face a daunting challenge in Week 10 against Pittsburgh's sterling passing game. The Steelers enter third in the AFC in passing at 278.8 yards per game. "We just cant give up big plays," Cincinnati DB Leon Hall said.
Analysis: The Bengals have been stingy on defense throughout the season as a result of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's eight-man defensive line rotation. The shift represents one of the most relentless, devastating front lines in football that has resulted in opponents gaining a lowly average of 84.5 rushing yards per game, second fewest in the NFL. Still, the Cincinnati secondary was burned for two passing touchdowns against the Titans last week. Fantasy owners should consider the Bengals a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Sunday's difficult matchup.
News: The Bengals DST recorded a win on Sunday at Tennessee in Week 9. The Bengals DST held the Titans to 328 total yards of offense in the 24-17 victory. The Bengals DST forced just one turnover as Jared Cook lost a fumble in the game. Cincinnati's solid secondary definitely limited Nate Washington, but other receivers did get involved for the Titans and QB Matt Hasselbeck. The Bengals DST managed two sacks of Hasselbeck and both of those belonged to Carlos Dunlap.
Analysis: The Bengals DST failed to record a defensive or special teams touchdown for the first time since Week 4 against Buffalo. The Bengals had scored four DTDs in the last three games before Sunday. The Week 9 effort was a little underwhelming for the Bengals DST, but they still came away with the win. Heading into Week 10 against Pittsburgh, it will be another tough game for the unit. Still, they've been awesome this season and should remain a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Bengals DST has been a top-of-the-line unit in Fantasy play all season heading into Week 9 at Tennessee. In fact, the Bengals DST has scored 19 or more Fantasy points in four of seven games this season and has been in double figures in five of seven contests. Just last week at Seattle, the Bengals DST registered two turnovers forced, four sacks and two defensive or special teams touchdowns. The Bengals DST has recorded a touchdown in three straight games and has four total over that span. The unit has recorded double digits in Fantasy points in three of the four road games in which they have played.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has been an awesome unit all season and is coming off their best effort in Week 8 against Seattle. The DST might have a tough task ahead of them in Week 9, however, as the Titans are giving up the third-fewest Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units this season. Tennessee has only allowed a DST to score in double figures in one game this season and that was Week 7 against Houston. While it might be the toughest test yet for the Bengals DST, we still think they are too good not to use as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: The Bengals defense did a solid job of limiting the Seahawks in Week 8. While Seattle put up 411 yards of offense, including 350 through the air, Cincinnati limited them to just 12 points in the 34-12 win. Along with keeping the running game in check, the Bengals did some scoring of their own on defense. DB Reggie Nelson picked off QB Tarvaris Jackson in the fourth quarter and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. It was the third straight game in which the Bengals scored on defense. Ive been around some very good defense, coach Marvin Lewis said. But never one that has scored touchdowns in three consecutive games. ... Thats just excellent.
Analysis: The Bengals recorded just their third interception of the year on Sunday and provided Fantasy owners with another defensive score. They have been better against the pass then they showed vs. Seattle so hopefully they can make some adjustments going forward. But with another favorable matchup in Week 9 against the Titans, consider keeping the Bengals DST active in the majority of leagues.
News: The Bengals will not be facing the most potent offense in Week 8 against the Seahawks. Seattle ranks 28th and 31st in the league in rushing and passing, respectively, and average just 262.8 yards per game. Cincinnati enters Sunday ranked fifth in the league in both rush and pass defense. The Bengals have recorded 14 sacks thus far with two interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.
Analysis: While Cincinnati is tied for last in the NFL with just two picks, their defense has done a solid job of limiting opponent's passing games and should be able to continue that trend in Week 8. Seattle will have to waiting and see if Tarvaris Jackson is healthy enough to start the contest but even if Charlie Whitehurst gets the nod, their pass offense is nothing to write home about. That being the case, consider the Bengals DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News:Carlos Dunlap returned a Pierre Garcon fumble 35 yards for a score, clinching a win for the Bengals, 27-17, in Week 6 against the Colts. Cincinnati, who was without starting LB Rey Maualuga due to an ankle injury, held Indianapolis to 273 yards (94 rushing). The Bengals forced three turnovers and one sack.
Analysis: The Bengals came into Week 6 showing respect for the winless Colts, but the Cincinnati defense got the job done again. Cincinnati has been solid on defense through six weeks, and the Bengals DST has become a respectable Fantasy option. The good news for them is that they are on a bye in Week 7, so Maualuga should return in Week 8 against the Seahawks. Consider the Bengals DST a viable Fantasy option that week.
News: The Bengals defense will be down a key player in Week 6 against the Colts as starting middle linebacker Rey Maualuga is out with an ankle injury. "Rey is playing well and doing good things. Sometimes when you don't get to play you get an opportunity to step back and watch somebody else do it," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It helps you improve a little bit. You got to take this time and make the most out of it." LB Dan Skuta will start in Maualuga's absence. Despite the Colts' 0-5 record and absence of QB Peyton Manning, the Bengals are wary of Indianapolis' passing attack. Particularly, the big-play ability of WRs Pierre Garcon and Reggie Wayne. "This will be the best receivers we play by far," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "It's not even close."
Analysis: Garcon has posted some big games the last two weeks since QB Curtis Painter took over the offense, so Zimmer's concerns are legit. And the defense as a unit is definitely weaker with Maualuga sidelined. On paper, the Colts have the 30th ranked offense (287.0 ypg) and 28th ranked scoring offense (17.4 ppg), but they are making strides, which is why the Bengals are nervous. But the Bengals have the best total defense (279.6 ypg) and sixth best scoring defense (18.8 ppg), so they should be able to hold their own, even with Maualuga out. Consider the Bengals DST a viable Fantasy option for Week 6.

But the Bengals have the best total defense (279.6 ypg) and sixth best scoring defense (18.8 ppg), so they should be able to hold their own, especially with the Colts likely down RB Joseph Addai (hamstring). Consider the Bengals DST a viable Fantasy option for Week 6.
News: The Bengals' defense was burned by a big play in Week 5, but they also had several big plays of their own. In a 30-20 win over the Jaguars, the defense allowed 296 total net yards, but a large chunk came on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Jacksonville QB Blaine Gabbert to WR Jason Hill. Meanwhile, Gabbert was sacked three times and DB Nate Clements and DL Geno Atkins each recovered a fumble. Atkins scored a touchdown with seven seconds remaining in the game, picking up a botched lateral and running the recovered fumble in for a 10-yard score. The Bengals did not make any interceptions, and they have only one on the season to date -- and none from their secondary.
Analysis: The Bengals' defense was more dominant than the score or yardage total suggested. Of course, they won't always have such an easy time stopping an opposing offense, as the Jaguars don't have much firepower. The Colts should pose a somewhat more difficult challenge in Week 6, but the Bengals should still be considered a decent option as a No. 2 DST.
News: The Bengals enter Week 5 as one of the league's top defenses, having held opponents to 18.5 points and 275.5 yards per game. Week 5 could be their best week yet, as they will face the Jaguars, who have scored the fewest points (39) in the league this season. Jacksonville's total of 1,057 offensive yards is the second-lowest in the league, as only the Seahawks have gained less ground.
Analysis: The Bengals have done a good job of shutting down opposing offenses, but their DST ranks just 16th going into Week 5. Part of the problem has been a lack of interceptions, as they have made just one pick all season. Even if the Bengals fail to intercept Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (two INTs in three games), they should have an easy time keeping the Jags out of the end zone, so this is a good opportunity to start their DST in most leagues.
News: With the NFL's highest-scoring offense on the schedule for Week 4, the Cincinnati defense focused on aggressively rushing Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bengals were certainly effective in the pass rush and held Fitzpatrick to a season-low 199 passing yards in a 23-20 victory on Sunday. Cincinnati also recorded a sack on the signal-caller as he managed to complete only 58.8 percent of his passes in the Bills' first loss of the season.
Analysis: Buffalo entered Sunday's game having recorded at least 34 points in each of its three wins this season. But the Bengals surrendered just 273 total yards as they effectively handled the clock to keep the Bills' prolific offense off the field. Cincinnati still won despite few mistakes by Buffalo as the Bengals failed to pick off a pass for the third consecutive game. Consider Cincinnati a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 5 at Jacksonville.
News: Cincinnati LB Thomas Howard has been pleased with the Bengals defense this season, but the fact the unit hasn't scored a defensive touchdown yet was among his critiques. "We want to be the best," Howard said. "Look at Tampa Bay and the Ravens defense back in the day. They were scoring on defense and stopping teams. We're just trying to get to that." Cincinnati is tops in the NFL in yards allowed per rush and fifth in sacks with nine.
Analysis: The Bengals are looking to hold their second straight opponent to less than 20 points when they host Buffalo in Week 4 on Sunday. The Bills' offense has regularly shredded Cincinnati, scoring at least 30 points in each of the last four meetings. Buffalo enters the matchup leading the league in scoring at 37.7 points. It might tough to duplicate their five-sack performance from Week 3, so Fantasy owners should view the Bengals as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 4.
News: The Bengals held the 49ers to 13 points in Week 3, but it still wasn't enough in a 13-8 loss. Cincinnati allowed just 226 yards of offense and sacked opposing QB Alex Smith five times in the game. They also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Bengals allowed just one rushing touchdown in the game, which came in the fourth quarter. Despite the loss, the Bengals defense certainly did more than their part in this one. The Bengals have exceeded expectations in the early going on the defensive side of the ball and look to be worthy of scooping up off the waiver wire in deeper leagues. They'll be tested in Week 4 at home against a Buffalo offense that has been red-hot to begin the season, however, making them merely a No. 2 defensive unit in Fantasy.
News: The Bengals will head home for the first time in Week 3, hosting the 49ers. San Francisco has managed the second fewest offensive yards in the league after two games, averaging 207.5 yards per game.
Analysis: In Week 2, the Niners allowed six sacks to Dallas while also committing a turnover via an interception. The Bengals don't have quite the pass rush Dallas has, but they could benefit from some bonus points if San Francisco doesn't address their protection issues. We still view the Bengals as a unit to pass on in most Fantasy formats, but the matchup does not look too shabby for those owners who might be trying to play matchups week-to-week.
News: Cincinnati entered Week 2 looking to contain Denver's running attack, but instead saw veteran RB Willis McGahee run for 101 yards and a score. The Bengals did hold Kyle Orton to under 200 yards passing although they didn't get a ton of pressure on him. Cincinnati recorded two sacks on the day and recovered two fumbles. The Broncos would end up winning the game, 24-22.
Analysis: The Bengals were missing a few pieces on the defensive side of the ball, but held their own for the most part. Looking ahead to Week 3 the Bengals host the 49ers, a team that is banged up on offense and couldn't seem to get their momentum going in Sunday versus the Cowboys. Depending on how healthy the 49ers are next week, Cincinnati's DST could be a sleeper start. But the safe bet is to view them as a No. 2 option.
News: After holding Peyton Hillis to just 87 total yards in Week 1, the Bengals defense look to do the same against the Broncos Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee this Sunday. Moreno might not play, so Cincinnati would have to contain a veteran that hasn't had 16 rushing attempts in a game since 2008. The one thing the Bengals will have to improve on in Week 2 is defending the roll out. . Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer admitted he's been working on defending the play after Browns QB Colt McCoy made some big plays against them last week. "We kind of screwed it up," he said. "We'll see it again. We'll see if we or I got any smarter.
Analysis: Cincinnati may be without DE Robert Geathers in Week 2, but they have hungry young players on defense that want to step up. Denver didn't have a good showing in Week 1 either, despite QB Kyle Orton throwing for over 300 yards. While Cincinnati showed some promise last week, the Bengals DST is still just a No. 2 option this Sunday.
News: Though they faced the daunting task of trying to slow down Peyton Hillis, the Bengals defense did their job against the Browns in Week 1. The Pro Bowl back had just 87 total yards on the afternoon without a touchdown. The rest of the Cleveland offense was limited to less than 200 yards on the day, and Cincinnati ended up with a 27-17 win. The defense forced an interception and they notched a pair of sacks on the way to victory.
Analysis: The Bengals defense was not a highly-touted unit heading into the year, but they played well enough for a win. They pressured QB Colt McCoy constantly on the afternoon, and allowed him to complete less than half of his passes. While the defense may not be as stout as the competition stiffens, it was a great start to 2011. Fantasy owners should consider the Bengals DST to be a reserve option more times than not going forward, though a matchup against the broncos in Week 2 may be in there favor.
News: After a week of practice, Cincinnati knows the key to keeping its Week 1 matchup against Cleveland close: contain RB Peyton Hillis. The bruising runner carried the ball a season-high 27 times for 102 yards and a touchdown in the Browns' victory during the teams' first meeting last year. This season, stopping Hillis on the first level will be essential to avoiding a repeat. "We dont want to be in the open field one on one with him because hell either, one, make us look bad or, two, drop his shoulders and try to run us over," Cincinnati LB Rey Maualuga said.
Analysis: While it's important for Cincinnati to bottle up Hillis, the Bengals should receive a boost in its special teams Sunday. Brandon Tate, who was claimed off waivers Sunday, will be used as a punt returner as well as kick returner, according to coach Marvin Lewis. Tate returned 79 punts at North Carolina for a 10.6 yard average and scored three touchdowns. Fantasy owners should view the Bengals as low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 1.
News: ESPN.com reports the Bengals acquired safety Taylor Mays from the 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick.
Analysis: This is a good move by the Bengals. They do have some good depth at safety with Reggie Nelson, Chris Crocker and Gibril Wilson, but Mays has some untapped potential and it's not a big investment for Cincinnati. Track Mays' progress with the Bengals before taking a flier on him in Fantasy IDP leagues. The Bengals DST is still a No. 2 Fantasy option in Draft Day.
News: The Bengals held strong defensively in a Week 17 loss to the Ravens, holding Baltimore to just 199 yards of total offense and 13 points. The Ravens converted just 10 first downs in the game and Cincinnati held QB Joe Flacco to just 125 passing yards. The Bengals forced an interception and recovered a fumble in the game while sacking Flacco four times.
Analysis: The Bengals did not get the win, but they did finish the season on a defensive high note with a good effort against a playoff team. They played three sound defensive games to end the year and found they have some building blocks and playmakers to look forward to in the future. However, given the instability in Cincinnati over the last few years we would not recommend investing in the Bengals as anything more than a sleeper defensive unit in Fantasy leagues this fall.

News: Cincinnati held San Diego to 5 yards of offense in the first quarter on Sunday. It was a windy day in Cincy, which made the Chargers offense sputter at times. The Bengals contained the high-powered offense to 320 total yards -- 64 yards on the ground and 256 through the air. Rookie DL Carlos Dunlap would sack Philip Rivers late in the fourth quarter, setting back their drive. Rey Maualuga intercepted Rivers and returned it for47 yards to end the third quarter and set up a scoring drive for the Bengals. Roy Williams would also recover a fumble by Mike Tolbert after he was hit hard by Reggie Nelson. Tolbert would leave the game on a stretcher, but it was reported that he was fine after the game. Cincinnati would stop San Diego on a fourth-and-7 with six minutes left int the game, all but preserving the victory. Cincy won the game, 34-20.
Analysis: The Bengals were able to contain the Bolts offense, but they got an assist from the weather. It was clear the wind played a big role in Rivers' struggles. Plus having Tolbert leave during the first quarter helped the Bengals out too. Cincinnati plays Baltimore in Week 17. At this stage of the season, Fantasy owners should be fine without using the Bengals DST.
News: Cincinnati faces San Diego in Week 16, a team some members of the Bengals secondary have bad memories of. CB Leon Hall endured one of his worst games of a strong 2009 season last year at San Diego. WR Vincent Jackson gave him fits, catching five passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns in San Diego's win. The two should match up on Sunday. The Chargers rank third in the NFL in scoring (27.7 points per game), and with Philip Rivers under center, the Chargers are a dangerous team. A dangerous team that needs a win to stay alive in the playoff race. "We've got to win. That's the only thing we can control and that's the only one we really have to worry about," Rivers told the Chargers' official website on Thursday.
Analysis: The Bengals were able to contain the Browns last week, but the Chargers are not the Browns. Even with some injuries to their receiving corps, the Chargers are a dangerous team. The Bengals have been allowing 222.8 passing and 120.1 rushing yards per game this season. With a tough matchup in Week 16, we don't recommend using the Bengals DST in any format.
News: The Bengals defense surrendered 17 points on just 278 yards of offense in Week 15 against the Browns. The unit was able to Peyton Hillis in check for more most of the afternoon as Cleveland was only able to muster 43 yards rushing. Cincinnati did not force a turnover in the 19-17 victory, however, did record four sacks while only allowing the Browns to go 2 of 8 on third downs.
Analysis: The Bengals defense played well on Sunday and were able to stop Cleveland's ground game. Despite the unit's strong showing against the Browns, Cincinnati's defense has not been very good this season and will have to face the Chargers in Week 16. San Diego is very explosive on offense this season and can put up points in a hurry. We do not recommend using the Bengal's DST next Sunday against the Chargers.
News: The Bengals defense, which surrendered 23 points on 354 yards of total offense last Sunday against the Steelers, will be looking to slow down the Browns in Week 15. Cleveland is ranked 29th in total offense and is averaging 18.1 points on the season. The Bengals enter Sunday's matchup ranked 29th in terms of Fantasy points among DST's and have racked up 18 sacks on the season while forcing 22 turnovers.
Analysis: The Browns are not known as a offensive juggernaut as the unit has scored a combined 19 points over its last two contests. However, the Bengals defense has not been very good this season and has surrendered at least 20 points in all but two games this season. The unit has accounted for just two scores on the year and should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy DST against the Browns.
News: The Bengals DST sacked QB Ben Roethlisberger four times in a Week 14 loss to the Steelers, but gave up 23 points and 354 yards. They also failed to record a turnover.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has been an usable option most of this season and continued to look less than ordinary on Sunday afternoon as the Steelers racked up a decent amount of yards, despite playing in wet conditions. In Week 15, the Browns come to Cincinnati, which is a decent matchup, but only a very brave Fantasy owner would dare start the Bengals DST, who rank among the worst units in 2010.
News: The Bengals DST entered Week 13 ranking sixth-to-last in Fantasy points, and they didn't help their cause in their matchup against the Saints. New Orleans rolled up 436 yards of offense and scored 34 points in the win. The lone turnover that the Bengals forced was an interception of Saints QB Drew Brees by DB Reggie Nelson. They also mustered one lone sack of Brees.
Analysis: The Bengals continue to be porous in the second half, as this time they allowed the Saints to put up 21 points after halftime. The Cincinnati DST is only active in four percent of leagues and for good reason. They should only be on rosters in the deepest of leagues.
News: The Bengals DST ranks sixth from the bottom in Fantasy points so far this season, and a poor Week 12 showing against the Jets did not help matters. In Week 13, they will go up the Saints, who rank fourth in the league in offensive yardage. Cincinnati is also dead last in sacks with only 12 on the season, while New Orleans is particularly good at protecting QB Drew Brees. Only four teams have allowed fewer sacks than the 16 that the Saints have allowed.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has not been an advisable start in Fantasy, and Week 13 offers up a particularly brutal matchup. Owners should avoid the Bengals DST at all costs.
News: The Bengals defense started strong in the Week 12 game against the Jets, holding them to three points in the first half. However, in the second half, Brad Smith gashed Cincinnati with a 53-yard touchdown run and an 89-yard kickoff return for a score. QB Mark Sanchez also managed to find WR Santonio Holmes for a third quarter TD. The Bengals did sack Sanchez twice -- one nearly for a safety. LB Rey Maualuga picked off Sanchez, which ended up being the only turnover forced by Cincinnati. The Jets ended up with 319 yards on the night including 170 on the ground.
Analysis: The Bengals have now allowed 58 points in their last two second-halves of action against the Bills and Jets. They clearly don't come out well after the 15-minute intermission on the defensive end. In Week 13, they will need to figure things out against the Saints, who have racked up at least 30 points in their last three games. It might be time to get rid of the Bengals DST if you haven't already done so.
News: The Bengals defense -- coming off of a game against the Bills when they allowed 49 points -- now faces the Jets eight-ranked NFL offense in Week 12. For perspective, owners should know that the Bills rank 24th in the league in total offense. Cincinnati's defense was gashed for more than 300 passing yards and another 140 rushing. The Jets rack up 365.9 yards per game, and score 23.8 points per game. Second-year QB Mark Sanchez -- who was just named AFC offensive player of the week -- is making the Jets more of a balanced team. When the two teams met twice in 2009, both New York wins, the Bengals were pounded on the ground by Shonn Greene (197 rushing yards combined).
Analysis: If the Bengals want to turn things around on Thanksgiving, they have to get to the opposing QB. They come into the game with just ten sacks in ten games, good for the worst in the NFL by four sacks. Three different QBs have thrown for at least three TDs against them this season -- all resulting in Bengal defeats. We don't think much will change on Thanksgiving night, so consider other DST units in Fantasy play.
News: The Bengals defense had a complete second-half collapse in a Week 11 loss to the Bills. The Bengals went into the half riding a 31-14 lead. However, the Bills scored 35 unanswered points in the second half, including four offensive touchdowns -- with three coming from WR Steve Johnson. The Bengals were hurt by the injuries that knocked out secondary starters Johnathan Joseph, Chris Crocker and Roy L. Williams in the first half. The Bills totaled 449 yards (141 rushing). Cincinnati got one sack and forced two turnovers -- both interceptions by Joseph, who was injured on his second pick as he returned it 21 yards for a score.
Analysis: This definitely could have been a different game for the Bengals had those three secondary starters stayed healthy, but they did not. The Bengals really haven't had a good defensive performance since Week 3 when they held Carolina to seven points. Their last seven opponents have all scored 20-plus points. Now is not the time to start the Bengals DST in Fantasy. Cincinnati plays the Jets in Week 12 on Thanksgiving.
News: The Buffalo Bills will try to win consecutive games for the first time since October 2009 in Week 11, but the Bengals stand in their way as they look to end a six-game losing streak. Injuries are mounting for Buffalo as rookie running back C.J. Spiller is out with a hamstring injury. Spiller's absence may mean another big game for Fred Jackson, who scored twice during his best performance of the season in a Week 10 win against Detroit. Jackson gained 133 yards on 25 carries while adding 37 more on six catches. He'll face a Bengals' defense that has allowed over 100 yards rushing in seven games this season.
Analysis: During the six-game losing streak, the Bengals have allowed an average of 26.3 points per game. Lucky for them the Bills are just averaging 18.2 points per contest. The Bills offense has slowed down after posting 34 points in an overtime loss to Baltimore. Buffalo hasn't scored more than 19 points in its last three games. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has cooled off, so establishing the running game behind Jackson will probably be a focal point for the Bills. If Cincy can stop the ground game, then they might have a chance to win the game Week 11. Consider the Bengals DST at best a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 11.
News: The Bengals DST held the Colts to 23 points and 256 yards in a Week 10 loss, but didn't manage to force a turnover and only had a pair of sacks.
Analysis: Holding QB Peyton Manning to zero touchdowns is no mean feat, but DSTs get a lot of their Fantasy points off turnovers and sacks. The Bengals unit remains a bottom-10 option in standard Fantasy leagues, although they do have a great matchup against the Bills in Week 11. If your main DST has a tough opponent, then think about adding the Bengals in deeper leagues and using them if you have the room.
News: The Bengals defense did some things well in Week 9 against the Steelers but were unable to limit QB Ben Roethlisberger and company in the defeat. Although Cincinnati sacked the quarterback once and DB Roy L. Williams picked him off, their defense gave up 314 total yards in the 27-21 loss. RB Bernard Scott also fumbled the opening kickoff, which led to Pittsburgh's first score of the game.
Analysis: The Bengals defense came into Week 9 having allowed an average of 221 passing yards and 120 yards on the ground this season, and gave up pretty much those same totals against Pittsburgh. Williams supplied Cincinnati with their 10th interception of the year but the sack was just their seventh. It is hard to slow down teams when you don't get any pressure on the quarterback. Next up for the Bengals are the Colts and their high-powered passing attack so continue to view their DST as a No. 2 option heading into Week 10.
News: The Bengals defense has not done a solid job of stopping teams so far this season and will face another tough task in Week 9 as the Steelers come to town. Pittsburgh enters Sunday's matchup with the leagues 11th best rushing attack, averaging over 117 yards per game, while Cincinnati has given up over 120 yards rushing per contest, good for 20th in the NFL. In two games between the division foes last season, the Bengals held the Steelers to 32 combined points.
Analysis: The Bengals defense has held opponents to under 20 points three times this season but still gives up way too much yardage for Fantasy owners to like. While they do have nine interceptions on the year, their six sacks rank them near the bottom of the league in that category. Along with allowing teams to run all over them, Cincinnati is giving up over 221 passing yards per contest, including 217 to Dolphins QB Chad Henne a week ago. The Bengals DST does not appear to be a good play for Week 9 so consider them a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Bengals DST allowed 22 points and 354 yards to the Dolphins in a Week 8 loss. Cincinnati didn't record a sack and forced just one turnover, an interception.
Analysis: Cincinnati's secondary was banged up on Sunday, and while they held the Dolphins reasonably in check, they just didn't make enough plays to pick up many Fantasy points. In Week 9, things won't get any easier when Pittsburgh comes to town, so continue to ignore the Bengals DST in most Fantasy formats.
News: The Bengals practiced Thursday in preparation for their Week 8 game against the Dolphins without five defensive backs. That doesn't bode well for their chances of limiting WRs Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess on Sunday. Starting DB Adam Jones is already out for the season.
Analysis: The Dolphins have become a pass-first team this season, and they will surely be looking to punish this hurting secondary on Sunday. The Bengals DST has severely underperformed this season and this Week 8 contest could be a shootout if both offenses get their air game going. Don't use the Bengals for the time being in Fantasy play unless their matchup is a superb one.
News: Bengals CB Adam "Pacman" Jones is out for the season with a disk problem in his neck. The team placed him on season-ending injured reserve. Jones provided much-needed depth at cornerback and was coming into his own there, plus he contributed on special teams. The team will turn to Morgan Trent to replace Jones.
Analysis: With Jones done for the year and Johnathan Joseph banged up, the Bengals' secondary is looking vulnerable. They've also been playing without pass rusher Antwan Odom. The Bengals DST has been losing steam for a while now, but these reasons all make the unit even less appealing.
News: Coming off an impressive defensive performance against the Buccaneers in Week 5, when they had an interception and three sacks, the Bengals struggled Week 7 at Atlanta, allowing 39 points on 452 yards. They had no sacks and one interception. Their one saving grace was a 59-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery by Adam Jones.
Analysis: The Bengals DST had some low-end appeal coming into the season, but they haven't lived up to the hype, struggling even with favorable matchups. Injuries haven't helped -- they were without top pass rusher Antwan Odom in Week 7 -- but they haven't been the only reason for the Bengals' struggles. Consider the Bengals DST no more than a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 8 against the Dolphins.
News: The Bengals defense, which struggled in the team's last game Week 5 against the Buccaneers, allowing 391 yards, could find its hands full again Week 7 at Atlanta. Falcons QB Matt Ryan has passed for 498 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in two games at home this season and hasn't lost there since 2008. He has struggled at times with heavy pressure, but the Bengals have only six sacks, tied for second-fewest in the league. The defensive front also has a big hole to fill with end Antwan Odom beginning a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. His absence could open up running lanes for Michael Turner, who was held to 45 yards rushing last week after averaging 94.8 during Atlanta's four-game winning streak.
Analysis: The Bengals DST had some sleeper appeal coming into the season, but it has been far too inconsistent from week to week to recommend in Fantasy, especially with a matchup like this. Opposing DSTs have scored only 7.83 points per game against the Falcons this season, seventh-lowest in the NFL. Treat the Bengals DST as nothing more than a desperation play this week.
News: The Bengals DST was dealt a blow on Friday when DL Antwan Odom was suspended four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Odom was expected to miss a game or two with a knee injury, but now he'll miss four guaranteed.
Analysis: The Bengals DST hasn't performed up to expectations yet this season, and with a very difficult schedule the rest of the way, this unit should probably be avoided in most Fantasy formats for the time being. Cincinnati is off in Week 6.
News: The Bengals DST gave up 24 points and 391 yards to the Buccaneers in a Week 5 loss, but they at least gave their Fantasy owners a little to smile about when they made three sacks, an interception and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Bengals disappointed in Week 4 when the Browns limited them, and it would have been another ugly outing on Sunday if not for the turnovers. Luckily for Fantasy owners, the Bengals are off in Week 6, so they won't have to deal with the stress this unit provides. Things won't be easy after the break when they visit Atlanta, so leave the Bengals for deeper formats in Week 7.
News: After a disappointing performance in Week 4 against the Browns, the Bengals DST will try to get back on track against the Buccaneers in Week 5.
Analysis: The Buccaneers are one of the more limited offensive teams in the league, ranking 26th in total offense through three games with an average of 288 yards a contest. They also don't turn the ball over a whole lot, as Josh Freeman is usually kept on a tight leash and has just two picks on the year. If your league rewards fewer points against more than turnovers, the Bengals are certainly worth a look in Week 5, and if Cincy can get an early lead at home, that could force Freeman to air it out a bit and possibly throw interceptions.
News: The Bengals were run over by Peyton Hillis and couldn't overcome his gains on the ground or get to QB Seneca Wallace enough. The DST allowed 23 points while registering a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. The Browns totaled 295 yards, 110 of them by Hillis. Adding injury to insult, the team lost CB Johnathan Joseph to an arm injury; he says it's not broken but instead is bruised badly.
Analysis: The Bengals faced a weak offense this week and struggled. They could fare the same way in Week 5 when the Buccaneers come to Cincinnati rested off of a bye. Then again, Tampa Bay has turned the ball over seven times and allowed seven sacks, so the Bengals might be good enough to use again in Week 5. Consider your options before going with them.
News: The Bengals are on the road at Cleveland in Week 4 to face a Browns team that has scored 45 points in three games. Their quarterback situation is in flux as Jake Delhomme has spent the week trying to get back from a serious ankle sprain that knocked him out of the last two games, and their pass attack in general is weak. But they do sport one of the league's breakout rushers in Peyton Hillis, who rumbled through the vaunted Ravens defense last week to the tune of 144 yards and a touchdown. In fact, Hillis is responsible for 306 of the Browns' cumulative 943 yards from scrimmage and three of the team's six touchdowns. The Bengals and their 13th-ranked run defense will surely be tested.
Analysis: While Hillis will be a threat to the Bengals, the fact is that Cleveland has averaged an interception per game and has also had its fair share of fumble problems, including one by Hillis. Look for the Bengals' stiff secondary to pick off Delhomme (or Seneca Wallace) at least once and for the Cincy front seven to get a sack or two. The Bengals DST is worth starting in Week 4.
News: The Bengals defense welcomed rookie QB Jimmy Clausen to the NFL in Week 3. Clausen made his first NFL start for Carolina and the Bengals made sure it wasn't a memorable afternoon. Clausen led just one scoring drive as Carolina lost 20-7. The Panthers managed just 267 yards (87 rushing). Cincinnati picked off Clausen once and also sacked him once. The Panthers also coughed up the football three times on fumbles, two from Clausen.
Analysis: The Bengals defense had been waiting for this matchup all week. Seeing a rookie QB in his first career start is music to the ears of an NFL defensive coordinator. The Bengals were helped by Mother Nature in Week 3 since it rained most of the afternoon, but that is still two strong performances in a row from the Cincinnati defense after dominating the Ravens in Week 2. A third one might be on the way in Week 4 against the Browns, so consider starting the Bengals DST in Fantasy.
News: The Bengals could sit back in Week 3 and wait for Panthers rookie QB Jimmy Clausen, who is making his first career start, to make mistakes, but S Chris Crocker says that's the wrong approach. His whole thing will be to be efficient and not make mistakes, Crocker said. I think theyll let him lean on the run and depend on play-action. The Bengals rank 18th in total defense (317.5 ypg) and 21st in scoring defense (24.0 ppg).
Analysis: The Bengals were a different defensive team in Week 2 against Baltimore after New England ran all over them in Week 1. Cincinnati was solid in coverage and put enough pressure on QB Joe Flacco -- something they lacked in Week 1 against Tom Brady -- to make him throw four interceptions. The Bengals are a better defensive unit than their numbers show. Cincinnati is now licking their chops heading into Week 3, where they will face Clausen in his first career start under center. The Panthers rank 28th in scoring (12.5 ppg) and 28th in total offense (257.5 ypg), so consider starting the Bengals DST in Week 3.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was pleased with his unit's improvement from the Patriots to the Ravens game especially in the last series where he had to improvise. With Adam Jones and Johnathan Joseph out due to injuries, Morgan Trent and Chris Crocker were playing the cornerback spots in nickel coverage. Said Zimmer about the coverage: "It was good. I was going to put something in on the sideline and I backed off." The Bengals, who rank 18th in total defense (317.5 ypg) and 21st in scoring defense (24.0 ppg), will take on the Panthers in Week 3.
Analysis: The Bengals were a different defensive team in Week 2 against Baltimore after New England ran all over them in Week 1. News: The Bengals defense vowed to play better in Week 2 against the Ravens after being embarrassed in Week 1 against the Patriots. The defense kept its word. Outside of a 31-yard touchdown catch by Derrick Mason in the third quarter, the Bengals harassed QB Joe Flacco all day and beat Baltimore, 15-10. "We felt so bad as a defense (after Week 1)," safety Chris Crocker said. "We felt awful." Cincinnati forced Flacco to throw four interceptions. The Bengals held Baltimore to 259 yards (109 rushing). Cincinnati had one sack.
Analysis: One of the biggest weaknesses the Bengals had in Week 1 as putting pressure on QB Tom Brady. They only sacked Flacco once in Week 2, but they did pressure him and they were great in pass coverage, shutting down Anquan Boldin, Mason and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The Bengals have the talent on defense every week to be a shut down unit, so look to the Bengals DST when a favorable matchup appears. That could be Week 3 against the Panthers, who have struggled offensively in the first two weeks of the season.
News: Defensive lineman Tank Johnson thinks the Bengals need an attitude adjustment. The Bengals' defense came into the season with aspirations of moving up in the rankings from fourth to the NFL's best. Instead, it's marooned at No. 25 after getting flattened in an opening 38-24 loss to the Patriots, a showing so bad that the Bengals are calling it an eye-opener. Maybe they're not as good as they think. "Defense is all about attitude," Johnson said Wednesday. "We did not have the right attitude last week. Collectively, we'll have an attitude adjustment and we'll be prepared for Sunday." The Bengals (0-1) have high stakes for their home opener against Baltimore (1-0), a team picked by many to dethrone them as AFC North champions. The Bengals swept the division last season, the first time they've done that in franchise history, and have won their last seven games overall against AFC North teams.
Analysis: Another bad showing in Week 2 and the defense can forget about being considered the league's elite. "I take it very personal," Johnson said. "I don't know why the attitude wasn't where it needed to be across the board -- myself included -- but I know our goal this week is to have the right mindset. And the mindset is going to be all-day, smash-mouth and get after them." The Bengals were bad in all phases in New England. Carson Palmer threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, and the Patriots ran back the second-half kickoff for another score. But the defensive collapse was the most stunning part of the team-wide implosion. The Bengals' priority was to pressure QB Tom Brady, but he was hit only twice all game while throwing it 35 times. Cincinnati didn't come close to sacking him. The defense had two good games against the Ravens last season, beating them 17-14 in Baltimore and 17-7 in Cincinnati. The Ravens scored only two touchdowns on offense and went only 4 of 21 on third-down conversions in the two games. However, this Baltimore team is a bit different. The acquisitions of Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are critical to the development of Joe Flacco. Also, RB Ray Rice is a year older and has a better understanding of the running game. Look to the Bengals DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 2.
News: The Dayton Daily News reports that Bengals DL Jonathan Fanene is expected to be miss 3-5 weeks with a torn hamstring.
Analysis: Fanene gets to the QB on occasion when healthy, but he's not an elite DE and remains not worth worrying about in IDP Fantasy play, healthy or not. This certainly hurts the Bengals DST a little bit, so think about only using them in deeper leagues for Week 2 against Baltimore.
News:The Sports Xchange reports for the Cincinnati Bengals and their suddenly maligned defense it doesn't get any easier in Week 2. After facing Tom Brady and New England in Week 1, the Bengals host a very confident Baltimore squad with Joe Flacco at the helm. With the trio of Anquan Boldin, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Derrick Mason at receiver, it's also a very different looking Ravens offense that will stress the pass more than the run. That's not good for a Bengals defense that didn't generate an ounce of a pass rush. Tom Brady wasn't sacked at all and was only pressured twice. "We weren't using our hands well, we were just running into guys and things like that," defensive tackle Domata Peko said. "We can't do that. We were thinking a lot -- we were thinking too much. We've just got to play ball."
Analysis: The Bengals defense did quite well against Baltimore in 2009. They held the Ravens to just 21 points and 472 yards in two games. However, this Baltimore team is a bit different. The acquisitions of Boldin and Houshmandzadeh are critical to the development of Flacco. Also, RB Ray Rice is a year older and has a better understanding of the running game. The Ravens are serious contenders to dethrone the Bengals in the AFC North, so this grudge match will not be for the weakhearted. Look to the Bengals DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 2.
News: The Bengals DST was abused in Sunday's game at New England in Week 1. The Bengals had no sacks, interceptions or fumble recoveries in a 38-24 loss. They did record 62 total tackles. On special teams, Quan Cosby had one kickoff return for 18 yards, Adam Jones had two kickoff returns for 37 yards and Bernard Scott had one kickoff return for 15 yards. The Bengals had no punt returns.
Analysis: The Bengals DST will likely have better days, but the Patriots just did whatever they wanted on offense. Look for the Bengals to play better in Week 2 against Baltimore, but the DST should not be considered a starting Fantasy option.
News: Bengals S Gibril Willson suffered a left knee injury during Friday night's preseason game against the Eagles. Wilson's agent, Alvin Keels, posted on Twitter that Wilson suffered an ACL/MCL injury. This is a tough blow to the Bengals defense because defensive coordinator MIke Zimmer loved what Wilson was doing during training camp.
Analysis: The Bengals were counting on Wilson to provide depth in their secondary, which was a problem during the 2009 season. Still, the Bengals DST has the chance to play well in 2010 even without Wilson. They have plenty of talent on defense and get DE Antwan Odom back from last year's torn Achilles' and should get better production from second-year LB Rey Maualuga. The loss of Wilson will hurt, but the Bengals DST should still be considered a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 option on Draft Day.
News: The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the Bengals will utilize the 3-4 defense in 2010 without committing to it full-time. The team likes the talent they have up front to use in both the 4-3 formation and the 3-4 thanks in part to athletic pass rusher Antwan Odom and athletic speedster Michael Johnson. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer told the official team website that the Bengals tried to use the 3-4 last season but made it too complicated. Hence, they've simplified their plan. "Some of the coverages that we're playing fit exactly to it. Now it's just basically the alignment of how we do it," Zimmer said.
Analysis: This makes the Bengals DST a bit more interesting as they were the only pure 4-3 scheme defense in the AFC North. There's plenty of potential with these guys, making the Bengals DST good enough to use in the deepest of leagues as a starter and in standard leagues as a backup or unit to grab off waivers during the season.
News: Adam "Pacman" Jones agreed to a two-year deal with the Bengals, putting the troubled cornerback on a team with a history of giving players second chances. The Bengals also agreed to terms with safety Gibril Wilson, according to his agent.
Analysis: Jones could have some trouble making the Bengals. Cincinnati has one of the best cornerback tandems in the league in Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall, who had six interceptions apiece last season. Morgan Trent, a sixth-round pick last year, had a solid rookie season, and the Bengals selected Brandon Ghee from Wake Forest in the third round last month, looking for depth at the position. Wilson also has an uphill battle to make the team. The Bengals' secondary is certainly deep, and their run defense isn't bad either. If Jones can contribute on special teams, this unit might be a tremendous sleeper for 2010. Look their way with a late-round flier in the deepest of seasonal leagues, otherwise draft another DST and reconsider the Bengals off waivers during the year.
News: The Bengals drafted Florida DE Carlos Dunlap (second round), Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee (third round), Georgia DT Geno Atkins (fourth round) and Texas LB Roddrick Muckelroy (fourth round), improving their defensive depth. All four of these players are expected to provide depth for Cincinnati over the next few seasons.
Analysis: The Bengals starting defense was essentially set before the draft, and with two of their first three picks designed to help the offense it became clear that the team is comfortable with their defense. Dunlap might notch a few sacks this season, but that's about it. The Bengals DST remains a No. 2 option even though they might have the best cornerback duo in the NFL.
News: Free agent defensive tackle Tank Johnson posted on Twitter that he's staying in Cincinnati after agreeing to a four-year deal. He had written previously that he didn't think he'd be back. The team has since confirmed the deal.
Analysis: This is a boost for the Bengals, who already have two of the better cornerbacks in the league and some quality run-stopping linebackers to boot. If their pass rush can rebound, this will be a tenacious unit. They're worth drafting late in the deepest of formats and could emerge as a sleeper DST before the start of the season.
News: The Bengals have re-signed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to a new contract, keeping him with the club. Zimmer improved the Bengals defense in 2009 as the team went 6-0 in division play and made the postseason for the first time since 2005. The defense ranked fourth in 2009 (at 301.4 yards per game). The ranking was the third-highest in franchise history. In scoring defense, the 2009 Bengals finished sixth in the NFL at 18.4, the second-highest ranking in franchise history.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is nothing more than a No. 2 option in 2010 so long as they don't add more playmakers to a good but not great unit. There are certainly better options out there for Fantasy play this season.
News: The Bengals defense had no answer for the Jets run game on Sunday in a Week 17 loss. The Jets rushing attack combined for 257 yards on 57 attempts, scoring four touchdowns in a 37-0 shutout loss. On the other hand, Jets QB Mark Sanchez completed only eight of his 16 passes for 63 yards. The team failed to create a turnover in the game or record a sack.
Analysis: The Bengals were missing a couple of key players in Week 17 including Domata Peko and Chris Crocker. The unit was pretty solid this season, especially against the run (which they certainly did not demonstrate in Week 17). The Bengals DST should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day in 2010.
News: The Bengals DST held the Chiefs to 10 points and 295 yards in a Week 16 win. Cincy also added two interceptions and a sack.
Analysis: Even without DL Domata Peko and DB Chris Crocker, the Bengals defense did it's job on Sunday against the poor Chiefs. In Week 17, the Bengals have a decent matchup at the Jets, but will likely be more of a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: Bengals DT Domata Peko, who's missed the past three games with a knee injury, will be on the practice field Wednesday, though it sounds as if he'll be very limited. The plan still calls for him to return for the Week 17 game vs. the Jets. "I'll have my cleats on Wednesday," Peko said. "I can't wait to get them back on."
Analysis: Peko has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues, but he's a good run stuffer for the Bengals. Keep an eye on his progress because if he can return for Week 16 against Kansas City that would help the Bengals DST.
News: The Bengals allowed 27 points in a 27-24 loss to the Chargers in Week 15. They allowed 366 net yards of offense and forced two turnovers in the game. They had two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Bengals are not one of the better defensive options in Fantasy, but they can be used based on matchups. They'll face an upstart Chiefs offense that scored 34 points in Week 16 and they remain a very pedestrian option.
News: In the Bengals' Week 14 loss at the Vikings, the DST unit totaled two sacks, an interception of Brett Favre and a forced fumble. The Bengals held Favre to just 192 yards passing and one touchdown and barely held Adrian Peterson to under 100 rush yards (he had 97).
Analysis: The Bengals DST cannot be relied upon in Week 15 when they play at the Chargers. Consider other options before going with them in their next matchup.
News: The Bengals have signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith two days after run-stopping lineman Domata Peko had surgery on his right knee that will sideline him for at least the next three games. Smith played for the Bengals from 2004-06, starting six games. He played for the Browns the last two years and had been out of the NFL since Detroit released him on Sept. 5.
Analysis: The Bengals defense will have their hands full with the Vikings in Week 14, and it doesn't help that they'll be without Peko holding down the run defense. Consider other options before starting the Bengals DST.
News: The Bengals defense had another good showing on Sunday in a 23-13 win over the Lions. Their afternoon was highlighted by an interception returned for a touchdown by Jonathan Fanene. The Bengals held Lions starting QB Matthew Stafford to only 143 yards through the air and one touchdown, picking off two of Stafford's passes. Daunte Culpepper spelled Stafford late and added 49 passing yards on 2 for 3 passing. On the ground, the Lions were limited to 80 yards and a TD.
Analysis: The Bengals defense has been solid all season and they had a great matchup against the Lions in Week 13. The Bengals defense has allowed less than 21 points in every game since the team's bye in Week 8. However, the Bengals do have a tough task ahead of them in Week 14 at Minnesota. Think of them as a No. 2 Fantasy unit for that contest.
News: The Bengals allowed just 169 yards and seven points in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns. They did not force any turnovers in the game and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Bengals defense had an all-around great day, stifling both the ground and air games of the Browns offense. But they did not force any turnovers and did not pressure Brady Quinn much in the game. The Bengals defensive unit remains one of the better units in Fantasy, however, and they face a great matchup in Week 13 against the Lions. Start them in all leagues.
News: Bengals DT Domata Peko, who left Sunday's game at Oakland with a sprained right MCL, said he'll try to play this Sunday vs. Cleveland with a customized knee brace. "I'm a little sore," Peko said Monday. "It hurts a little bit when I do some change of direction stuff. I should be day by day with a chance to play this Sunday. I'm happy about that."
Analysis: Peko has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues, but he is important to the Bengals defense. Keep an eye on his progress and hope he's OK against the Browns.
News: The Bengals DST had a decent performance on Sunday against the Raiders in a losing effort. However, a special teams blunder highlighted the game. Andre Caldwell turned the ball over on an Oakland kickoff with less than 30 second to go in the game which led to a game-winning field goal. The Bengals defense limited Bruce Gradkowski to 183 yards, two TDs and one interception on Sunday on 17 for 34 passing. The Raiders were limited to 92 yards on the ground on 24 carries.
Analysis: The Bengals defense has been tremendous this season but were a bit disappointing against an inept Raiders offense. The Bengals face another poor offense in Week 12 against Cleveland, a team they allowed 20 points to in Week 4. Get the Bengals DST active as a No. 1 Fantasy unit for Week 12.
News: The Bengals DST had four sacks and an interception Sunday at the Steelers, but they scored on a 96-yards kickoff return from rookie Bernard Scott in the first quarter. Dhani Jones had seven tackles and a sack, Jonathan Fanene had six tackles and two sacks and Robert Geathers had four tackles and a sack. Frostee Rucker had the interception off a tipped ball. On special teams, Scott finished with five kickoff returns for 206 yards, and Quan Cosby had three punt returns 20 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has been outstanding this season and should do well in Week 11 at Oakland. Consider the Bengals DST a No. 1 option against the Raiders.
News: Cincinnati played host to Baltimore on Sunday of Week 9 and came away victorious, 17-7. The Bengals DST limited Joe Flacco and the Ravens to just 215 total yards in the game. The Bengals forced two turnovers, both coming on Flacco interceptions, and also sacked Flacco four times.
Analysis: The Bengals limited the Ravens points and yards in the game and forced two turnovers with four sacks. It wasn't a dominant effort by their DST but it was pretty solid and earned the Bengals the victory. The Bengals DST is not normally a high-end Fantasy option and with the team playing at Pittsburgh in Week 10, we don't recommend starting them as anything but a last-resort option.
News: The Bengals DST had a solid performance on Sunday in a 45-10 win over the Bears in Week 7. Leon Hall led the way for Cincy, intercepting two Jay Cutler passes and tying two other players for a team-high seven tackles. Chris Crocker also intercepted a pass for the second straight week and Dhani Jones recovered a fumble.
Analysis: This was certainly one of the Bengals defense's better performances of the season, creating four turnovers against a good Bears offense. They limited Matt Forte to only 24 rushing yards in the game as well, largely due to the fact that the Bears were so far behind early on in the game. The Bengals are off Week 8 then take on the Ravens in Week 9. The unit will likely be considered a low-end option for that contest.
News: Defensive end Antwan Odom will miss the rest of the season because of a torn Achilles' tendon, costing the Cincinnati Bengals their top pass rusher. Odom had surgery on his right leg Monday and was placed on injured reserve. Odom is tied for the league lead with eight sacks and has been the Bengals' most dominant defensive player. The team also lost DL Domata Peko with a knee injury in Week 6 and also were without DL Frostee Rucker, who has a sprained ankle. DT Tank Johnson played with an injured foot.
Analysis: The Bengals' defensive line has gotten thin quick, and they'll need help getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, starting with Jay Cutler of the Bears in Week 7. Consider the Bengals DST nothing more than a good one-week replacement now that their pass rush is seemingly up in smoke.
News: The Bengals suffered a significant loss Sunday against Houston when DE Antwan Odom -- tied for the NFL lead in sacks -- suffered an Achilles' tendon injury that coach Marvin Lewis described as "probably pretty severe." Tests will determine the extent of the injury. Odom barged through the line and blocked Kris Brown's 28-yard field goal try on Houston's first possession. He hurt his right Achilles' on Matt Schaub's 12-yard touchdown pass to Owen Daniels later in the first quarter and was taken off the field on a cart, costing the Bengals their best pass rusher. They also lost starting DT Domata Peko to a knee injury in the first quarter.
Analysis: The Bengals DST will struggle if Odom is out for the season, as expected. Against the Texans, the Bengals DST had an interception, two sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Keep an eye on what happens with Odom, but the Bengals DST would not be a good option against Chicago in Week 7 if he's out for the year.
News: Bengals DE Antwan Odom was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his left Achilles' tendon in the first quarter. Odom, tied for the NFL sacks lead with eight, got hurt on Houston's 12-yard touchdown pass with 48 seconds left in the first quarter Sunday. The training staff felt the lower leg and immediately called for a cart to take Odom off the field. The defensive lineman has been the key Cincinnati's improved pass rush. He also blocked a field goal attempt on Houston's first possession.
Analysis: Hopefully this is not a season-ending injury for Odom and he can return, but this does not sound good. We should know more after the game, but he's not coming back to this game.
News: The Bengals defense had a solid performance Week 5 against the Ravens offense, allowing only one offensive touchdown in a 17-14 win. They held Joe Flacco to only 186 yards passing and a touchdown, picking him off twice. On the ground, the Ravens totaled only 82 yards on 18 attempts, failing to get into the end zone. Dhani Jones and Robert Geathers were able to sack Flacco.
Analysis: The Bengals DST had its best performance sine Week 1 against Denver on Sunday, a small surprise considering how well the Ravens have performed offensively so far this season. However, the Bengals will host a potent Houston offense that has a ton of weapons in Week 6, making them just a No. 2 Fantasy option at best.
News: The Bengals DST was able to come up with three turnovers on Sunday in the team's Week 4 23-20 overtime win over the Browns. The Bengals recovered two fumbles in the game and also picked off one Derek Anderson pass. Anderson went 26 for 48 against the Bengals defense for 269 yards and two touchdowns, with one coming on the ground. Jerome Harrison led a Browns rushing attack that carried the ball 33 times for 146 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST was a little bit banged up coming into Week 4 at Cleveland but did enough for the team to eke out an overtime victory. The Browns offense was a bit better than expected against Cincinnati but it isn't too much cause for concern. The Bengals DST should be considered a viable Fantasy option for Week 5 at Baltimore.
News: Bengals starting linebacker Rey Maualuga had to miss practice because of a sprained left knee, as did defensive tackle Tank Johnson (foot) and cornerback Johnathan Joseph (foot). While Johnson and Joseph are expected to practice on at least a limited basis Thursday, the rookie linebacker isn't a lock to hit the field. Maualuga hurt his knee during the second half of a 23-20 win over Pittsburgh. He walked with a pronounced limp on Wednesday that prevented him from practicing. "It's a little stiff, a little swollen," he said.
Analysis: Maualuga is a replaceable part of the Bengals defense, but he's also been fairly solid for them. If he's out -- and if Johnson and Joseph are out -- then Cincy might have trouble slowing down the Browns even though Cleveland has struggled to score points. At the very least, the Bengals DST should be considered a startable option for Week 4, and if Johnson and Joseph suit up, they'll be a legit No. 1 option.
News: The Bengals defense kept the team in the game Week 3 against the Steelers, allowing 20 points on 373 yards. The Bengals also got a sack and an interception returned for a touchdown by Johnathan Joseph.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has been a surprising unit in Fantasy. It recorded six sacks against the Packers in Week 2 and has perhaps its easiest matchup yet Week 4 at Cleveland. Believe it or not, it's worth a waiver claim if you need a sleeper unit.
News: The Bengals DST was impressive in Week 2 at Green Bay. Defensive end Antwan Odom tied a single-game team mark with five sacks, three of which came after Packers left tackle Chad Clifton injured his ankle and was carted off early in the third quarter. The Bengals had six total sacks (Ray Maualuga had one) and recovered a fumble. The Bengals also had 67 kickoff return yards from Andre Caldwell and 115 punt return yards from Quan Cosby.
Analysis: The Bengals took advantage of the Packers poor offensive line, especially when Clifton went down. Consider this a good outing, but don't plan on using the Bengals DST in Week 3 against the Steelers.
News: In the Bengals' Week 1 loss vs. the Broncos, the DST totaled just three sacks as they failed to pick off QB Kyle Orton -- including on Orton's last pass of the game, which went for a stunning touchdown off a tip by CB Leon Hall.
Analysis: The Bengals DST was a decent sleeper in Week 1, but they should be avoided in Week 2 when they go up against the Packers. Consider other options if you can.
News: The Dayton Daily News reports Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is fond of LB Dhani Jones, who is a 10-year veteran and clear-cut leader of the Bengals' defense. "Dhani's sharp. He handles everything pretty quickly," Zimmer said. "He tells guys where to line up. He knows the checks. He knows what everybody does on the defense. It's really nice having a guy like that." Fresh off the weekend's mandatory minicamp, Jones believes the Bengals' 12th-ranked defense can become a Top-10 unit. "I like the personnel, the people, the attitude and the mentality going into training camp," Jones said. "All I want is for everybody to be successful. I get my information from Zim and pass it on. I study as much as I possibly can so I know as much as I can on the field so that we're prepared for anything."
Analysis: We'd like to see the Bengals DST improve before we can recommend them as a unit to target this year. Go into the season with the Bengals as a low-end DST option, but they could be a unit to target off the waiver wire.
News:Tank Johnson, a player with legal troubles in his background, is joining the Bengals, a team that frequently has dealt with such issues. The defensive tackle agreed to a contract with the Bengals on Tuesday. His agent, Jerrold Colton, says the Bengals' defensive scheme is a better fit for Johnson than his previous team, the Dallas Cowboys. The 27-year-old free agent had 33 tackles and three sacks in two seasons with the Cowboys, who signed him even while Johnson was still serving an eight-game NFL suspension in 2007 for violating the league's conduct policy.
Analysis: Johnson fills a need for the Bengals and should definitely help against the run. The unit got hot at the end of last season but still has plenty of holes to fill, especially along the defensive line (just 17 sacks in 2008). Consider them a one-week replacement option off the waiver wire when they have a good matchup, like against Cleveland, in 2009.
News: One week after shutting out the Browns, the Bengals DST held the Chiefs to six points and 220 yards in a Week 17 victory. Their one turnover came on a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Bengals DST finished the season in fine fashion, but they were one of the poorer units as a whole in 2008. Things might get a little better in 2009, but they're not worth drafting in any leagues this summer.
News: The Bengals DST, a Fantasy joke all season, showed up in a big way in Week 16 for the few Fantasy owners who took a risk on them. Cincinnati shut out the Browns, recording four interceptions, one for a touchdown, and three sacks in windy and cold Cleveland.
Analysis: The Bengals DST were one of the worst Fantasy units all season, but with Browns QB Ken Dorsey struggling and the weather conducive for a low-scoring game, some people were touting Cincy as a nice sleeper option Sunday for their Fantasy championship. Those folks got it right, as the Bengals took advantage of all the opportunities handed to them. The one-week legends should come back to earth in Week 17 though, when they host the red-hot Tyler Thigpen and the Chiefs. Do not use the Bengals if your league goes all the way to the end of the season.
News: Cincinnati was able to hold on in Week 15 at home against the Washington Redskins, 20-13. The Bengals DST was sharp against Washington's blundering offense as they limited the Redskins to just 280 yards of offense. Washington turned the ball over twice on fumbles from Mike Sellers and Chris Cooley. Sellers fumble was costly as he was on the goal-line when it occurred. The Bengals DST did not sack QB Jason Campbell, however.
Analysis: The now 2-11-1 Bengals DST wasn't flashy on Sunday against Washington. They had just two turnovers and limited the points and yardage but did little else. Still, they go their second win of the year. Unfortunately, the Bengals DST remains one of the worst in Fantasy and is not a recommended option in Week 16 at Cleveland, which defeated Cincy 20-12 in Week 4.
News: Cincinnati was horrendous in Week 14 in a 35-3 loss to the Colts in Indianapolis Sunday. The Bengals DST allowed 334 yards of offense, forced only a Dallas Clark fumble as the only turnover and failed to sack QB Peyton Manning even once.
Analysis: The Bengals DST remains one of the worst in Fantasy, so its subpar performance against a solid offensive unit doesn't come as a surprise. You'll want to leave it on waivers, obviously, for Week 15 against the Redskins.
News: The Bengals signed veteran linebacker Victor Hobson on Wednesday to bolster their injury-plagued defense. A sixth-year pro, Hobson was cut by the New England Patriots just before the regular season began. He played five years for the New York Jets, making 58 starts that included 14 of 16 games last season. He had 62 tackles with two sacks last season. For his career, Hobson has 334 tackles, 11 sacks, three interceptions and five fumble recoveries. The 6-foot, 250-pound second-round draft pick from Michigan joins a team that has lost a half-dozen defensive players to injury. The latest was safety Marvin White, who tore knee ligaments in Sunday's 34-3 loss to Baltimore.
Analysis: The Bengals DST remains one of the worst in Fantasy, so its subpar performance against a so-so offense doesn't come as a surprise. You'll want to leave it on waivers, obviously, for Week 14 at Indianapolis.
News: Bengals safety Marvin White played most of Cincinnati's latest loss on torn knee ligaments. Tests on White's right knee found that he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the first half of a 34-3 loss to Baltimore on Sunday. White didn't realize the severity of the injury and stayed in the game. Coach Marvin Lewis said Monday the test results were surprising, given the way White played. White was at a hospital and will miss the rest of the season, but is expected to be recovered from surgery by next season.
Analysis: The Bengals DST remains one of the worst in Fantasy, so its subpar performance against a so-so offense doesn't come as a surprise. You'll want to leave it on waivers, obviously, for Week 14 at Indianapolis.
News: The Bengals defense didn't look particularly impressive against the Ravens in Week 13, allowing 34 points on 451 yards. It recorded two sacks.
Analysis: The Bengals DST remains one of the worst in Fantasy, so its subpar performance against a so-so offense doesn't come as a surprise. You'll want to leave it on waivers, obviously, for Week 14 at Indianapolis.
News: The Bengals put defensive ends Robert Geathers and Frostee Rucker on injured reserve. Geathers suffered a knee injury during a 27-10 loss in Pittsburgh on Thursday night. He walked through the locker room Monday on crutches. The fifth-year player started all 11 games and led the team with 2 1/2 sacks. Rucker suffered a hamstring injury in the same game. The third-year player started four games this season and had one sack.
Analysis: The Bengals have lost three defensive players since their last game. Not a good sign. The Bengals DST is unowned in 97 percent of CBSSports.com leagues -- a sign that our players know what they're doing.
News: Bengals starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. The team on Friday placed Joseph on injured reserve, the third defensive starter lost to injury this season after linebacker Keith Rivers and safety Dexter Jackson. Joseph missed two early games with the injury, but had played in six straight games before aggravating it Sunday against Philadelphia. He didn't play in Thursday night's loss at Pittsburgh. Second-year player David Jones takes over Joseph's starting spot.
Analysis: You weren't about to start the Bengals DST anyway, but this is just another reason to steer clear of them. The Bengals DST is unowned in 97 percent of CBSSports.com leagues -- a sign that our players know what they're doing.
News: The Bengals defense barely even slowed down the visiting Steelers in Week 12, giving up 27 points on 364 yards. It didn't record an interception one week after recording three against the Eagles. It also went without a sack.
Analysis: The Bengals DST hasn't always looked so vanilla this season, but it gives up points and yards more often than not. It has a decent matchup Week 13 against the Ravens, but continue to think of it as just a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Somehow the Bengals DST limited Philadelphia to just 13 points although the Eagles posted 391 yards of offense in Week 11. The Bengals and Eagles played through overtime to a 13-all tie on Sunday and Cincy forced four Philly turnovers. All four turnovers can be credited to QB Donovan McNabb as he threw three interceptions and also lost a fumble on the 10-yard line that led to the Bengals first field goal. Cincinnati sacked McNabb twice in the game.
Analysis: The Bengals couldn't stop the Eagles offense down the stretch but stopped the run game, forced four turnovers and made two sacks while limiting the points scored and earning a tie -- which is better than a loss. Still, this is as good as it gets in Cincinnati and we don't recommend the DST in Week 12 at Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
News: Cincinnati didn't do much right in Week 8's 35-6 loss to the Texans. Houston racked up 384 yards against the Bengals DST and didn't cough up one turnover to the Bengals. Cincinnati recorded just one sack of Matt Schaub and that came from John Thornton.
Analysis: The Bengals have not been a productive Fantasy unit because they give up a ton of points and yards, don't force turnovers and don't get after the quarterback. Leave them on the waiver wire for Week 9 against Jacksonville.
News: The Bengals allowed 375 yards of total offense, leading to 38 points in Week 7 against Pittsburgh. They did not have a sack and did not force a turnover in the game.
Analysis: On top of all this, the Bengals lost Keith Rivers likely for the season with a broken jaw. The Bengals have not been a productive Fantasy unit because they give up a ton of points and yards, don't force turnovers and don't get after the quarterback. Leave them on the waiver wire for Week 8 at Houston.
News: The Bengals limited the hosting Jets to 26 points on only 252 yards in Week 6. They recorded two sacks and two interceptions and even scored a touchdown on a fumble recovered by Chinedum Ndukwe.
Analysis: The Bengals DST actually hasn't been terrible this season, but it usually does make enough big plays (in other words, sacks and interceptions) to deserve a starting spot in Fantasy. Against the Steelers in Week 7, leave it on the waiver wire.
News: The Bengals played a close one in Dallas in Week 5 but ultimately fell, 31-22. The Bengals DST allowed 373 total yards but did force two Dallas turnovers. Keith Rivers picked off a Tony Romo pass and also forced a fumble. Two Bengals each recorded half a sack to earn one full sack against Dallas.
Analysis: Cincinnati's defense was surprising better than usual in Week 5. That said, they are still not worth starting in most Fantasy leagues. In Week 6 the Bengals go to New York and meet the Jets and we all know what they did to the Cardinals the last time they took the field. Don't start the Bengals DST next week.
News: The Bengals DST had one interception and one sack Sunday against the Browns in a 20-12 loss. Antonio Chatman had one punt return for 9 yards, and Glenn Holt had four kickoff returns for 122 yards. DB Chinedum Ndukwe had the sack and fumble.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is not worth using in any leagues at this time. They play at the Cowboys in Week 5, so keep them reserved in all leagues.
News: The Bengals allowed 406 yards of total offense and 26 points in an overtime loss to the Giants in Week 3 at Giants Stadium. They did not force a turnover and did not record a sack.
Analysis: The first three weeks of the season have not been kind to the Bengals in any aspect of the game. They've been unproductive throughout the first three games and Fantasy owners should leave them on the waiver wire against the Browns in Week 4.
News: The Bengals DST gave up 24 points and 295 yards to the Tennessee Titans in a Week 2 loss. They did not get an interception but did manage to recover a fumble.
Analysis: If you're having to start the Bengals right now, we feel sorry for you. The Titans aren't exactly an offensive juggernaut and the wind was blowing hard on Sunday in Cincy, but they still managed to put up almost 300 yards. Stay well away from them in Week 3 at the Giants.
News: The Bengals defense came into Week 1 licking their chops as they were set to face a rookie quarterback in Joe Flacco, making his first career start. To add even more intrigue, Baltimore was set to face rookie RB Ray Rice and LaRon McClain since the Ravens deemed RB Willis McGahee (knee) unfit to play. Well, Baltimore won 17-10 and their offense put up 358 yards on the Bengals defense. Flacco scrambled for a 38-yard touchdown in the third quarter that ultimately won the game for Baltimore, and McGahee's replacements rushed for 150 yards. The Bengals defense got no sacks or interceptions and forced two fumbles -- which they recovered.
Analysis: The Bengals weakness in 2007 was their defense and it doesn't look as though much changed heading into 2008. The fact they couldn't rattle a rookie QB or even force him into mistakes is never a good sign. The Bengals need to work on some things and their DST is not a recommended Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Ravens.
News: The Bengals DST totaled three sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery in their 10-0 loss vs. New Orleans in Week 3 of the preseason. Through three preseason games, the Bengals have seven sacks and three interceptions.
Analysis: Despite having defensive whiz Marvin Lewis at the helm of this club, the Bengals DST isn't expected to produce enough stats to warrant regular Fantasy use. They're no better than a one-week replacement during the season when the matchup is right.
News:Browns WR Josh Cribbs suffered a high ankle sprain Monday night against the New York Giants that could keep him out until the Sept. 7 opener, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Tuesday. Cribbs, a Pro Bowl kick returner, underwent X-rays and an MRI on Tuesday, which revealed no fracture or tear. He will sit out Saturday's third preseason game in Detroit and probably the final preseason game Aug. 28 at home against the Bears. Cribbs will be evaluated day-to-day for the Chicago game, but starters usually play sparingly in the final tune-up anyway.
Analysis: Cribbs is one of the premier kick returners in the NFL, and gets nothing more than a token catch a few times per season. Cribbs has no Fantasy value outside of leagues that reward heavily for return yards.
News: Linebacker Keith Rivers ended his contract holdout with the Cincinnati Bengals late Tuesday night, ending an impasse that made him to miss nine days of training camp. Rivers was one of only two first-round draft picks still unsigned. The linebacker from Southern California showed up at the team's training facility on Tuesday night and signed the deal. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Rivers was expected to join the Bengals for a practice on Wednesday morning.
Analysis: The Bengals had projected Rivers as a starter for the regular season, but dropped him on the depth chart because he missed so much time. "He's behind, but we'll work to get him up to speed, and we know he's the kind of player who will get himself caught up," coach Marvin Lewis said. "Right from the start, through the draft and minicamps, he has shown us things that are innate to successful NFL linebackers." Rivers was the ninth overall pick in the draft. The Bengals are hoping that he helps fix their problems on defense, which have dragged them down for years. Rivers should end up being this season's Patrick Willis, being a 100-total-tackler in a defense that's good, not great. He'll end up as a low-end No. 2/top-end No. 3 Fantasy LB in 2008. The Bengals DST remains a low-end Fantasy option until they showed mark improvement during the season.
News: The official team web site reports that Bengals DE Antwan Odom, he of the newly signed free-agent contract this offseason, left the team's first training camp practice with a left foot injury. He left the Bengals' facilities on crutches with a boot on his left foot, and ice also on the foot. Head coach Marvin Lewis said he had gone for tests.
Analysis: Not that you were considering the Bengals DST as anything more than a one-week replacement option to begin with, but this has the potential to crush the sack total this team would otherwise have. We'll keep tabs on Odom for you, but don't count on drafting the Bengals DST in 2008.
News: The Bengals changed defensive coordinators after another abysmal showing last season, the main thing that brought them down to a 7-9 finish. Mike Zimmer has revamped the defense - the cornerbacks will be more aggressive, the alignments more unpredictable - and tried to give it a new attitude. Starting on Monday, they'll find out how it holds up. Zimmer installed his defense piece by piece during offseason workouts, then tested it against the starting offense during minicamp last month. So far, he likes how it looks. "They've been very receptive," Zimmer said. "They've bought into what we're trying to get them to do. The big key with this group is going to be to have some success. They're really eager to believe in something. If we can have some success early, I think that will allow them to buy into it a little bit more and maybe get the ball rolling a little bit."
Analysis: Doesn't all that sound so very good. Like the Bengals defense is on the up and up. Well, we've heard this before and it isn't like this is the first time the Bengals will try something new on defense. Still, if all goes according to plan, the Bengals DST should improve in 2008. They are still just a No. 3 DST at this time. Probably not worthy of a draft pick in Fantasy drafts.
News: Linebacker Odell Thurman was released by the Bengals on Monday, one month after he was reinstated by the NFL from a two-year suspension. Thurman failed to attend the team's three voluntary workouts last week, when he was in Georgia following the death of his grandmother. The Bengals are installing a new defense, and wanted him to participate. Thurman, a second-round draft pick from Georgia, showed promise as a rookie in 2005, when he led the team in tackles and led all NFL rookies with five interceptions. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2006 season after failing to show up for a drug test. The punishment was extended to a full season when he was later arrested for drunken driving. "The NFL provided Odell the opportunity to earn his way back onto our team, but we have not seen the right steps taken by him," coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "With our offseason work in progress and new talent added at our linebacker position, we've determined it's best to keep moving in a direction that does not include Odell."
Analysis: Thurman's presence wasn't necessary after the club added Keith Rivers via the 2008 NFL Draft. The Bengals have also added DE Antwan Odom to replace Justin Smith, and they're fairly deep at cornerback, but they're still not expected to be strong against the formidable offenses in the AFC North and beyond. Fantasy owners should consider them nothing more than a possible bye-week replacement DST in 2008. Don't draft them.
News: The Bengals took Keith Rivers, a stud inside LB from USC, with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Rivers is expected to bring his hard-hitting, sideline-to-sideline style to Cincy and help a very undermanned linebacking corps.
Analysis: Rivers should end up being this season's Patrick Willis, being a 100-total-tackler in a defense that's good, not great. Rivers is a great pickup, and he'll help against the run, but the Bengals DST remains no better than a No. 3 Fantasy DST.
News: Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been reinstated by the NFL after being suspended for the last two seasons. The Bengals said Monday they were informed by commissioner Roger Goodell that Thurman is eligible to play. He had been suspended because of violations of the NFL substance abuse policy. He was cleared in January by the NFL to resume working out with the Bengals pending word on his status. "Odell has met the NFL's conditions for reinstatement and has been added to our offseason roster," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis in a statement. "It is now up to Odell to continue to meet all NFL guidelines, and to maintain a standard of personal responsibility that will allow him the chance to compete for a spot on our team."
Analysis: A second-round draft pick from Georgia in 2005, Thurman started 15 games at middle linebacker, led the team in tackles and tied the team rookie record with five interceptions. This is a much-needed boost to the Bengals' linebacker corps, assuming Thurman is still in good shape. If that's the case, then the Bengals' run defense just got a lot better. The club added DE Antwan Odom to replace Justin Smith, and they're fairly deep at cornerback, but they're still not expected to be strong against the formidable offenses in the AFC North and beyond. Fantasy owners should consider them nothing more than a possible bye-week replacement DST in 2008. Don't draft them.
News: The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals owner Mike Brown said he expects to hear word on the possible reinstatement of LB Odell Thurman by mid-April. Meanwhile, Commissioner Roger Goodell seems optimistic. "I haven't gotten any update in a couple of weeks," Goodell said of Thurman. "He is going through the (offseason strength) program. I am encouraged."
Analysis: The NFL cleared linebacker Odell Thurman to resume working out with the Bengals in January, a step toward reinstatement from his two-year suspension. If reinstated, Thurman will have a shot at being a starter on the beleaguered Bengals defense.
News: Defensive end Antwan Odom signed a five-year deal worth $29.5 million with the Bengals, their first move in free agency to fix their biggest problem. Odom was coming off a career-best season with 16 starts and eight sacks with the Titans, who drafted him in 2004. The Bengals let defensive end Justin Smith leave as a free agent and failed to pull off a trade with Detroit for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Their defense has been one of the NFL's worst over the last three seasons, and they made the line a priority in the offseason.
Analysis: Odom replaces Smith at the end and should be decent there. However, the Bengals' defense is still a mess, especially up front. Fantasy owners should consider them nothing more than a possible bye-week replacement DST in 2008. Don't draft them.
News: The Bengals DST hired Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to fix things, and he has plenty of work to do. The DST had five defensive touchdowns in 2007 with 19 interceptions, 22 sacks, 15 fumble recoveries, 16 forced fumbles and one safety. On special teams, the Bengals were led by Glenn Holt, who had a 24.3-yard average on kickoff returns with one touchdown, and Antonio Chatman, who had a 5.2-yard average on punt returns. The Bengals have several key members on defense who are free agents, including DL Justin Smith, LB Landon Johnson and DB Madieu Williams.
Analysis: Look for Zimmer to improve the unit. The Bengals were 27th in yards allowed and gave up 385 points last year. There will be plenty of changes next year, but for now consider the Bengals DST a low-end option. They have some young talent in DB Leon Hall, DB Johnathan Joseph and LB Ahmad Brooks, who will be coming back from a groin injury. Losing Johnson would hurt, and the Bengals need to fix their defensive line.
News: Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was hired Tuesday for the same role with the Bengals, who have been dragged down by their defense for years. The 51-year-old Zimmer was available because of the Falcons' uncertainty over their next head coach. Zimmer becomes the third defensive coordinator under Marvin Lewis, who has led the Bengals to the playoffs once during his five seasons as head coach. Poor defense has been a constant thread. "Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years, and this is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization," Lewis said in a statement.
Analysis: Zimmer was the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator for seven seasons before moving to the Falcons last year. The Cowboys' defense gave up the fewest yards in the league in 2003. Atlanta finished 29th in yards allowed and gave up 414 points, fourth-most in the NFL, amid the turmoil of Petrino's departure. Atlanta gave up 34, 37, 30 and 41 points in its last four games. The Bengals were 27th in yards allowed and gave up 385 points, prompting them to fire Bresnahan and linebackers coach Ricky Hunley following a 7-9 finish. Zimmer is a good coach, but this is a team that simply needs additional talent. Don't expect the Bengals DST to be drafted in 2008 Fantasy play.
News: The Bengals DST scored a touchdown as Cincinnati closed out their season with a 38-25 win over the Dolphins in Miami, but managed only one sack and didn't force an interception. They did hold the Fins to 336 yards of offense, however.
Analysis: The Bengals defense is among the league's worst yardage-wise, but they do force a fair amount of turnovers. They won't be drafted in 2008, but are worth following in the first couple of weeks.
News: The Bengals DST had four interceptions and one sack Sunday against the Browns. Glenn Holt had two kickoff returns for 58 yards and Antonio Chatman had one punt return for 3 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST played well and could be considered a sleeper for Week 17 at Miami.
News: The Bengals defense somehow managed to allow 20 points and 337 yards to one of the most incompetent offenses in the NFL in Week 15 at San Francisco, recording two sacks and zero turnovers in the process. The Bengals special teams, meanwhile, picked up 80 yards.
Analysis: Normally, you wouldn't use the Bengals DST in Fantasy, and you apparently didn't want to even for this great matchup. For those of you who made the mistake of using it this time, hopefully you'll know better for Week 16 against the Browns.
News: The Bengals DST tamed a Rams offense minus their best passers (third stringer Brock Berlin started), culminating in a win with an interception and a forced fumble in Week 14.
Analysis: The Bengals DST normally isn't a recommended option, but they'll play at San Francisco in Week 15 and might be worth considering as a sleeper pick.
News: The Bengals defense allowed 24 points on 285 yards Week 13 at Pittsburgh. It recorded two interceptions and recovered two Willie Parker fumbles. The Bengals special teams, meanwhile, gained 107 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST didn't exactly reenact its six-point performance against the Titans in Week 12, but it again put together a solid all-around game. It actually has a decent matchup Week 14 against the Rams -- sack-wise, anyway -- but we still wouldn't recommend it outside of the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: The Bengals DST played a solid game against the Titans in Week 12, limiting Tennessee to 61 yards on the ground and 246 receiving yards. The Bengals had one sack, one interception and one forced fumble while holding the Titans to six points.
Analysis: Don't expect the Bengals to continue this trend in Week 13 at Pittsburgh. Keep the Bengals DST on the waiver wire despite their Week 12 performance.
News: The Bengals will start Johnathan Joseph and rookie Leon Hall at cornerback in Week 12 vs. Tennessee, benching veteran Deltha O'Neal.
Analysis: The switch might improve the Bengals' pass defense a smidge, but not enough for your opinion on the Bengals DST to change. As for Joseph and Hall in IDP league play, neither one should start on your roster at this time.
News: The Bengals DST gave up 35 points to the Cardinals in Week 11, although to be fair, two of the touchdowns came on interception returns. Still, those points count. Cinci only had three sacks and didn't make an interception.
Analysis: The Bengals are one of the league's worst defensive units and should certainly not be starting in Week 12 when they host Tennessee, regardless of how vanilla the Titans offense is.
News: The Cardinals will travel to Cincinnati to face the Bengals DST on Sunday in Week 11. The Cardinals offense ranks 14th in the NFL (12th through the air and 25th on the ground). They have allowed just 10 sacks this year, too.
Analysis: The Bengals DST ranks 31st in total defense and we only recommend starting them outside of 12-team leagues.
News: The Bengals DST had two interceptions and four fumble recoveries Sunday against the Ravens. Antonio Chatman had one punt return for 19 yards. Glen Holt had one kickoff return for 23 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST had a monster game, but they will struggle to duplicate that performance again in Week 11 against Arizona. Still, the Cardinals are turnover prone, so the Bengals could be a decent sleeper.
News: Cincinnati travels to face Baltimore in Week 10. The Ravens were embarrassed in Week 9 on Monday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This offense ranks 23rd in the league (24th in the air and 19th on the ground).
Analysis: The Bengals DST is the second-worst unit in the NFL (28th against both the pass and the run). They are not worth starting for this matchup.
News: The Bengals defense gave up 479 total yards and had only one interception in Cincinnati's 33-21 loss to the Bills in Week 9. They did not get a sack or a fumble recovery. However, Glenn Holt saved the day, special teams-wise, when he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Analysis: If you haven't realized by now that the Bengals are one of the worst DSTs in the league, then you need to pay more attention. Holt's return touchdown was nice if your league rewards special teams touchdowns, but the Bengals DST as a unit is not worth owning in any leagues heading into Week 10 against the Ravens.
News: Cincinnati travels to Buffalo to face the Bills' 31st-ranked offense in Week 9.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is ranked 31st in total defense, including 28th against the pass and the run. They have 12 sacks and eight interceptions so far this season. This defense is still not worth starting in most Fantasy formats, despite the favorable matchup.
News: The Bengals DST had one sack and one interception Sunday against the Steelers. Glenn Holt had five kickoff returns for a 28.2-yard average.
Analysis: The Bengals DST has minimal Fantasy value and should only be used in the deepest of Fantasy leagues Week 9 against Buffalo.
News: The Bengals DST is ranked 29th in total defense this season, including 28th against the pass and 27th against the run. They host Pittsburgh's sixth-ranked offense in Week 9.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is not a recommended Fantasy unit for this matchup.
News: The Bengals DST had two sacks, a fumble recovery and returned an interception for a touchdown against the Jets. Jonathan Joseph returned the interception for a score and Domata Peko recovered the fumble. Skyler Green had one kickoff return for 32 yards, and Glenn Holt had four kickoff returns for a 19.2-yard average.
Analysis: The Bengals DST played well but is a low-end option. Only use the Bengals DST if needed Week 8 against the Steelers.
News: Cincinnati hosts the Jets in Week 7 Sunday. The Jets rank 30th in total offense, including 25th in the passing game and 23rd on the ground. They have allowed 15 sacks so far.
Analysis: This Jets offensive line is still reeling from the trade that sent G Pete Kendall to Washington. The Bengals DST ranks 30th in total defense (28th agaisnt the pass and 29th against the run). They have nine sacks and six interceptions. While this matchup appears to be a good one for the Bengals DST, we don't recommend starting this unit in most formats because they just aren't reliable from week to week.
News: The Bengals recorded five sacks at Kansas City in Week 6, repeatedly punishing Chiefs QB Damon Huard. They also recovered two fumbles, surrendering 27 points on 354 yards. Their special teams gained 89 yards.
Analysis: The Bengals DST isn't a great option in Fantasy, even when the Jets come to Cincinnati in Week 7. Keep it on the waiver wire.
News: The NFL has suspended starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph for Sunday's game at Kansas City, the Bengals said Tuesday. Joseph will forfeit his salary for both this game and the Jets game on Oct. 21, the club said. He was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The second-year pro was arrested in northern Kentucky on Jan. 22 after a Boone County sheriff's deputy stopped a vehicle he was a passenger in and smelled marijuana, according to the police report. Joseph told the deputy he had marijuana in his Super Bowl backpack, where it was found, the report said. He was placed in a diversionary program open to first-time offenders and the Bengals said Tuesday he complied with all league and law-enforcement obligations to resolve the case.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is actually a low-end bye-week replacement option for Week 6 when they play at Kansas City. Because they're expected to face the Chiefs with Brodie Croyle at quarterback, there are worse DST options out there than Cincy this week.
News: Cincinnati, Minnesota, Oakland and Philadelphia are all on bye weeks in Week 5.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is not a solid Fantasy unit anyway, ranking 30th overall in total defense (26th in passing and 28th in rushing). They are, at best, a bye-week replacement when a matchup is great.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals DST allowed 34 points and 404 total net yards in Week 4 against QB Tom Brady, WR Randy Moss and the New England Patriots. The Bengals also did not record any sacks or fumble recoveries while picking off one pass.
Analysis: The Bengals will be off in Week 5 before heading to Kansas City to tangle with RB Larry Johnson and the Chiefs in Week 6. Avoid them in all Fantasy leagues for now, as the Bengals are simply too banged up to warrant consideration in any formats.
News: The Bengals DST will host New England's stellar offense in Week 4. The Patriots have averaged 38 points per game, which is good enough to rank them second in the NFL behind Dallas (38.7).
Analysis: The Bengals DST have five interceptions, one safety, four sacks and five forced fumbles in three games so far, but they rank 29th in total defense. They are not a recommended option for Week 4.
News: Another week, another rough go for the Bengals defense and special teams. Though they totaled two sacks and two interceptions at Seattle in Week 3, they gave up 24 points to the Seahawks and had KR Glenn Holt fumble a kickoff with a minute left in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Trust us: You don't want any part of the Bengals DST. Their Week 4 opponent? The Patriots. By all means, avoid this unit in all leagues.
News: The Bengals signed free agent linebacker Dhani Jones to a one-year contract Wednesday, a day after waiving linebacker Andre Frazier. Jones played four seasons with the New York Giants and three with Philadelphia, starting 13 games last season. The Eagles released him April 30 and he signed with New Orleans, which released him Aug. 31.
Analysis: Jones definitely helps the depth of the Bengals LB corps, but he's not going to change the way they play defense. The Bengals DST remains an unusable Fantasy unit after getting torched by the Browns last week.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals DST allowed 51 points by a previously inept offense in Week 2 at Cleveland. The Browns also posted 554 yards, that coming from a team that had just traded its starting quarterback. The average gain of 8.8 yards for every Cleveland Browns play sure grabs the attention. All those big numbers add up to one big - and enduring - problem for the Cincinnati Bengals. Their defense is dragging them down again. "You don't expect that to happen," defensive captain John Thornton said Monday. "That's why it's so shocking."
Analysis: Not even six touchdown passes by Carson Palmer were enough to get a victory Sunday in Cleveland, where the Browns' offense did anything it wanted in a 51-45 victory that showed why the Bengals (1-1) are nothing more than a break-even team. The Bengals hadn't given up so many points since a 52-31 loss to Carolina in 2002, when they finished a franchise-worst 2-14, fired coach Dick LeBeau and hired Lewis, known for running the Baltimore Ravens' championship defense. Avoid the Bengals DST in all Fantasy leagues for its Week 3 matchup against RB Shaun Alexander and the Seahawks in Seattle.
News: After a spectacular Week 1 effort against the Ravens, the Bengals DST came back to earth with a bump on Sunday at Cleveland in Week 2. They allowed 551 total net yards, grabbed only one interception and were held without a sack or a fumble recovery.
Analysis: Those people who picked up the Bengals DST off the waiver wire for Week 2 were left with their head in their hands after Derek Anderson, Jamal Lewis and the rest of the Browns offense went nuts on Sunday in Cleveland. There is a light at the end of the tunnel however, as the Browns take on the offensively-challenged Raiders in Week 3.
News: The Bengals were thought to have one of the worst defenses in the NFL, but they were a huge surprise in Week 1 against Baltimore. They had four fumble recoveries, two interceptions and scored a touchdown against the Ravens, and now they get the Browns. Cleveland will have a new starting QB in Derek Anderson, and last week against Pittsburgh the Browns had just 221 yards of total offense.
Analysis: Backup QB? Check. Bad offense? Check. The Browns will get all they can handle from a Bengals defense that had a superb 2007 debut last week. If your DST has a bad matchup this week, don't hesitate in giving the Bengals a shot in Week 2.
News: The Bengals defense went nuts against QB Steve McNair and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. It forced five fumbles -- three by McNair -- recovered four, and intercepted McNair and Boller once each. It held the Ravens offense to 314 yards and 20 points and collected two sacks.
Analysis: The Bengals defense definitely got off to a good start, but they also faced a pretty weak offense. Still, they have a matchup to exploit in Week 2 as they visit the hapless Browns.
News: Rookie Matt Toeaina - a 6-foot-2, 311-pound defensive tackle - caught a fluttering football and rumbled 81 yards for a score that gave Cincinnati a 26-10 lead early in the fourth quarter for Thursday's preseason opener at Detroit. However, the reserves allowed 17 points in the fourth, as the Lions rallied for a 27-26 win.
Analysis: The Bengals DST allowed 489 net passing yards and 548 total net yards overall, but there is not a huge amount of concern. Most of that production came late in the game, as the Lions mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback. The Bengals held Detroit's first-string offense to just three first downs on its two possessions. Basically, the Lions have better reserves than the Bengals. Still, this might be a sign of things to come, as this unit is best used as a bye-week replacement heading into 2007.
News: Bengals LB Odell Thurman, who applied for reinstatement with the NFL, was denied by Commissioner Roger Goodell. Thurman will be able to apply for reinstatement again at the end of the 2007 season. Thurman was suspended for the entire 2006 regular season for violation of the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy.
Analysis: Thurman can no longer be considered part of the Bengals' plans. Amazing how poorly the Bengals' 2005 draft turned out after so much success with Georgia teammates David Pollack and Odell Thurman playing alongside each other. Thurman has gotten into trouble and Pollack has a major neck injury he's still recovering from. The team kept DE Jusin Smith and signed LB Edgerton Hartwell this offseason but lost DT Shaun Smith, LB Brian Simmons, DB Kevin Kaesviharn, LB Marcus Wilkins and CB Tory James. Do not expect them to be strong defensively in 2007, making them at best a bye-week replacement DST.
News: Suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been accused of kicking and hitting two men in his Georgia hometown during the weekend. He has not been charged with a crime, but a magistrate will hear testimony Friday to determine if charges should be filed. Two men filed a complaint Sunday with police in Monticello, Ga., southeast of Atlanta, accusing Thurman of assaulting them early Sunday following an argument at a home, Jasper County Chief Magistrate Ken Jackson said Tuesday. The men accused Thurman's brother, Willie Thurman, of threatening them with a gun.
Analysis: The NFL suspended Thurman for the first four games of 2006 after he skipped a drug test. The suspension was extended to a full season following his arrest on a drunken driving charge in September. Thurman is one of nine Cincinnati players to be arrested in the past year. If he's guilty of this charge, then he'll probably not play for the Bengals ever again. The Bengals are a bye-week replacement DST unit at best in '07.
News: On Monday, the Bengals signed DT Kenderick Allen and released DT Sam Adams. "Releasing Sam is a very difficult decision," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement, "but the timing is such that it provides Sam the opportunity to obtain a roster spot with another team. Sam has had an outstanding NFL career, and we wish him and his family the very best."
Analysis: The team kept DE Jusin Smith and signed LB Edgerton Hartwell this offseason but lost DT Shaun Smith, LB Brian Simmons, DB Kevin Kaesviharn, LB Marcus Wilkins and CB Tory James. Do not expect them to be strong defensively in 2007, making them at best a bye-week replacement DST.
News: The Bengals announced that DE Justin Smith has agreed to his one-year tender offer and will play for the club in 2007. "We are pleased that Justin has come in at this time, so he can join his teammates for our important offseason work," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It's a display of his commitment to the Bengals and to a winning program. This does not preclude our continuing to talk to Justin and his representatives about reaching a longer-term agreement."
Analysis: Smith was the club's franchised free agent which hampered his ability to sign with another team. Smith generates sacks and QB pressures and is a big part of what the Bengals do up front. The team did sign LB Edgerton Hartwell this offseason but lost DT Shaun Smith, LB Brian Simmons, DB Kevin Kaesviharn, LB Marcus Wilkins and CB Tory James. Do not expect them to be strong defensively in 2007, making them at best a bye-week replacement DST.
News: The Bengals have signed LB Edgerton Hartwell to a one-year deal, reports Bengals.com. Hartwell previously started for the Falcons in Atlanta, but was banged up and only played in 13 games over two seasons.
Analysis: Hartwell's potential is very nice, but he's an oft-injured player who won't be a difference maker for the Bengals. The team have been quiet this offseason, one that has seen them lose DT Smith, LB Brian Simmons, DB Kevin Kaesviharn, LB Marcus Wilkins and CB Tory James. Do not expect them to be strong defensively in 2007, making them at best a bye-week replacement DST.
News: Bengals.com reports that the team has agreed to terms on a contract with DT Michael Myers, formerly of the Denver Broncos. He is expected to take Shaun Smith's place in the Bengals' defensive line rotation.
Analysis: The Bengals have been quiet this offseason, one that has seen them lose DT Smith, LB Brian Simmons, DB Kevin Kaesviharn, LB Marcus Wilkins and CB Tory James. Do not expect them to be strong defensively in 2007, making them at best a bye-week replacement DST.
News: The Bengals have released veteran LB Brian Simmons, who had been with the club for 10 years. The transaction appears to be a move to help clear up salary cap room. Simmons had 60 total tackles (33 solo) with two interceptions and two passes defensed in 11 games last season, and has 508 solo tackles in his career with the Bengals. "This was not an easy decision to make," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "Brian has been a fine player on the field, and he has been a great example to all of our players as a team leader and a citizen. But a new NFL year is about to begin with the start of free agency, and this allows us to best position our team under the salary cap to move forward for 2007. It will afford us options for signing other players who are a better overall fit ... We thank Brian for his years of great service for the Bengals, and we wish him the very best. We know he has been a favorite among our fans, and it has been our privilege to work with him."
Analysis: Simmons' departure will hurt the locker room more than hurt the team's on-field performance. Between this and their restricted/franchised key players on defense, a lot is at stake for the Bengals' defense. Consider them a No. 2 DST unit in 2007.
News: The Bengals have tagged free-agent defensive end Justin Smith as their "franchise player." What that means is that the club has tendered him a one-year offer with the average salary of the top-five highest-paid players at his position. Moreover, if a team wishes to make Smith an offer, the Bengals will have the right to match the offer. If they choose not to match the offer, they will get two first-round picks from the team who signs Smith. "We are pleased to designate Justin as our franchise player," said head coach Marvin Lewis. "He has been a consistent performer and worker. This move helps us keep our core players together, and it gives us an opportunity to continue negotiating for a longer-term contract with Justin."
Analysis: Expect Smith to stay in Cincinnati. The Bengals DST will be strong with him as an end, though they do have some issues at linebacker and in the secondary to address. For now, don't consider them in 2007 Fantasy drafts.
News: The Bengals issued an update on LB David Pollack's health with a statement. His most recent neck surgery was a success and Pollack will now being to rehab. Pollack has been able to resume normal activities for some time, but while wearing a neck brace. "I haven't given up on the possibility of playing football again, but any decision on that is a way down the road," Pollack's statement read. "My recovery is not complete. I've got a ton of work to do with doctors and trainers, and my neck just has to finish healing. We're going to take all of that one day at a time." Pollack added that he is now turning down interview requests while he focuses on getting back on the football field.
Analysis: Pollack has the potential to be a tackle-hoarding linebacker, though it could be way too soon to speculate on his future. He would help the Bengals defense against the run and give them back some of the linebacker depth they lost when he went down for the season.
News: After undergoing successful surgery on his neck, Bengals LB David Pollack has been told that if his rehab goes well, he could be given the green light to return to the football field. His agent claims that he's expected to be cleared as soon as this offseason.
Analysis: Pollack has the potential to be a tackle-hoarding linebacker, though it could be way too soon to speculate on his future. He would help the Bengals defense against the run and give them back some of the linebacker depth they lost when he went down for the season.
News: Coach Marvin Lewis refused to talk about suspended linebacker Odell Thurman, another indication that he has written him out of the Bengals' plans. Thurman was suspended for the season because he violated the NFL's substance abuse policy. He can apply to the league for reinstatement before next season. Lewis has been upset with the middle linebacker's repeated off-field problems, and took his locker away when the NFL handed down its suspension. Lewis also told Thurman to stay away from the team. "Odell is not a member of this football team," Lewis said. "He's on suspension by the NFL. He's got a long road to go. I'm not even going to spend any time talking about Odell. We're talking about our '07 season. He's not part of this football team. We don't need to talk about it."
Analysis: The Bengals defense was decent against the run without Thurman, but awful against the pass. Expect some significant changes defensively for the Bengals, but don't include them as a startable unit in 2007.
News: The Bengals DST recovered a fumble and had an interception with one sack against the Steelers. DB Dexter Jackson had eight tackles and recovered a fumble. DB Tory James had one tackle and an interception. DL Justin Smith had six tackles and a half-sack. DB Kevin Kaesviharn had three tackles and a half-sack. DB Madieu Williams had four tackles. LB Landon Johnson had seven tackles. DB Deltha O'Neal had one tackle.
Analysis: The Bengals DST will be a No. 2 option in 2007.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals DST allowed 24 points and 287 total net yards in the snow in Denver in Week 16. The also picked up three sacks, one interception and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Bengals will wrap up their season in Week 17 against the Steelers and their DST remains a decent low-end No. 1 option against their AFC North Division rivals.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals have declared LB John Busing, LB Andre Frazier, WR Skyler Green, QB Doug Johnson, LB A.J. Nicholson and DL Shaun Smith inactive for Week 16 at Denver.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of Fantasy consideration in any league.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals DST allowed 34 points and 394 total net yards in Week 15 at Indianapolis. They also had just one sack, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries in the loss.
Analysis: The Bengals defense had been red hot over the past couple of games and got sort of a reality check on Monday. They'll look to corral rookie QB Jay Cutler and the Broncos in Denver in Week 16.
News: The Cincinnati Bengals have declared C Rich Braham, LB Ahmad Brooks, LB John Busing, WR Skyler Green, No. 3 QB Doug Johnson, LB A.J. Nicholson, DL Shaun Smith and C Ben Wilkerson inactive for Week 15 at Indianapolis.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of any Fantasy consideration.
News: Without starting DB Deltha O' Neal, not playing because he was charged with DWI early Saturday morning, the Bengals defense played extremely strong against the Raiders in Week 14, limiting to them to 10 points and 223 total yards. DB Kevin Kaesviharn and DB Dexter Jackson had sacks, while DL Robert Geathers had two sacks in the win. LB Brian Simmons had an interception.
Analysis: Although the Colts offense has been struggling as of late, it is not recommended you use the Bengals DST in Week 15 in a potentially high scoring affair. Kaesviharn and Geathers are solid options in IDP leagues for Week 15. O' Neal should be back to play against the Colts.
News: Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal was charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday after being stopped at a traffic checkpoint. The two-time Pro Bowl player had a blood-alcohol level of 0.10, above Ohio's legal limit of 0.08, the State Highway Patrol said. O'Neal was alone in his car and arrested at the scene, Sergeant Kevin Long said. O'Neal took a breath test and was released.
Analysis: He is to appear in Clermont County Municipal Court on Dec. 12. The seven-year veteran is the eighth Bengals player arrested this year. Rookie receiver Reggie McNeal was charged with resisting arrest this week outside a Houston nightclub. Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said Saturday he was unaware of this latest arrest. The team withholds comment on unresolved charges against players, he said. O'Neal's status for Week 14 is unknown.
News: The Bengals have allowed just 23 points in the past three games, tied for a franchise record with the 1970 and 1971 teams. If the Bengals were to hold Oakland to eight points or less Sunday, they would set a franchise record for four games. The record is 32 set in Games 8-11 in 1971.
Analysis: Consider the Bengals a No. 1 option for Week 14 against Oakland.
News: The Cincinnati defense allowed seven points and 316 total net yards in Week 13 against the Ravens. The Bengals had a shutout going until WR Derrick Mason scored with 1:01 remaining. The Bengals did not record any sacks, interceptions or fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Bengals had a seven-quarter scoreless streak going until losing the shutout late in the fourth. They'll look to continue their strong defense in Week 14 against the Raiders.
News: The Bengals DST shutout the Browns with four sacks, four interceptions and one fumble recovery. LB Caleb Miller (10 tackles), LB Landon Johnson (six tackles), DL Robert Geathers (three tackles) and DB Kevin Kaesviharn (three tackles) all had one sack. Kaesviharn had two interceptions, and DB Tory James had two interceptions. DL Justin Smith recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Bengals DST was much aligned coming into this game and last in pass defense, so it was a good performance. Consider the DST a No. 2 option for Week 13 against Baltimore and use all IDP players as needed.
News: Bengals DL Sam Adams (knee) remained probable, but returned to practice Thursday. DB Deltha O'Neal (shoulder) remained questionable and did not practice. But safety Dexter Jackson (Achilles) did practice for the second day in a row, though he remained questionable.
Analysis: Consider the Bengals DST a No. 2 option for Week 12 against Cleveland. None of these players are recommended IDP players this week.
News: The most puzzling thing about Marvin Lewis' tenure in Cincinnati is the way his defense has performed. Or, in this case, underperformed. In the last two weeks, the defense has given up 42 points in the second half of a loss to San Diego, and 595 yards in a win over turnover-prone New Orleans. The blisterings dropped the Bengals' defense to last in the league in yards allowed. Asked if he was ever part of a defense ranked last, Lewis said, "Not while I was playing."
Analysis: Coming through the coaching ranks, Lewis was known as a defensive specialist and it remains puzzling why that has been his biggest downfall as a head coach. The Bengals DST is still a risky start at this point, but they could be used if needed in Week 12 against the Browns.
News: The Bengals allowed 16 points and 595 yards of total offense in Week 11 at New Orleans. They intercepted three passes, forced one fumble, recorded two sacks and scored one touchdown on a 52-yard interception return by Ethan Kilmer.
Analysis: The turnovers and touchdown should have helped to make up for the 500-yard plus yards of total offense. Fantasy owners, however, shouldn't count on a touchdown from them every week and the turnovers aren't a certainty either. Consider them a decent start in larger leagues for Week 12 at Cleveland.
News: The Bengals' embattled secondary - the team is last in the AFC in pass defense - could be hobbled further Sunday against New Orleans with a couple of injured starters. Coach Marvin Lewis withheld news Monday on the health of cornerback Deltha O'Neal, who injured a shoulder Sunday against San Diego but returned to the game. More would be known Wednesday, Lewis said of O'Neal's status. Lewis also didn't mention strong safety Dexter Jackson. Jackson had a protective boot on his left foot in the locker room Monday and declined comment.
Analysis: The Bengals DST is not a recommended starter for Week 11 against the Saints. Keep O'Neal and Jackson reserved in IDP leagues.
News: The Bengals defense allowed 48 points in a Week 10 loss vs. San Diego, giving up four touchdowns to LaDainian Tomlinson and three to Philip Rivers. They totaled three sacks and a forced fumble in the game.
Analysis: The Bengals defense is not a reliable Fantasy option anymore. Do not use them at New Orleans in Week 11.
News: The Bengals allowed 374 yards and 26 points in Week 9 at Baltimore. They did not sack the quarterback or force a single turnover in the game.
Analysis: Seven of those 26 points came off a defensive score for the Ravens, but the Bengals had an all-around mediocre day on defense. They'll look to bounce back in Week 10 vs. San Diego, another tough matchup.
News: The only Bengals defender questionable for Week 9 at Baltimore is LB Brian Simmons (neck). The following players are probable: DT Sam Adams (knee); S Kevin Kaesviharn (knee); DE Robert Geathers (neck); DT John Thornton (wrist) and LB Rashad Jeanty (foot).
Analysis: The Bengals defense has been getting rocked as of late and the Ravens offense looked good in their first week under Brian Billick's playcalling. Consider the Bengals defense a very low-end option in Week 9 Fantasy play.
News: The Bengals DST did little against the Falcons and forced no turnovers. LB Caleb Miller had nine tackles. DL Justin Smith had 12 tackles and a half-sack. DL Domata Peko had seven tackles and a half-sack. And DL Bryan Robinson had two tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Bengals DST should not be started in Week 9 against Baltimore. Use their IDP players if needed.
News: The Bengals DST gave up 14 points against Carolina with three sacks and one interception. DB Madieu Williams had seven tackles, LB Ahmad Brooks had five tackles and a sack, DL Robert Geathers had three tackles and a sack, DL Justin Smith had one tackle and a sack and DB Kevin Kaesviharn had an interception.
Analysis: The Bengals DST should be considered a No. 2 DST against Atlanta in Week 8. Consider using all these players in your IDP leagues.
News: The Bengals enter Week 7 vs. Carolina with several defenders banged up. LBs Brian Simmons and Rashad Jeanty and FS Dexter Jackson are all questionable for the game.
Analysis: Carolina's offense has been red hot as of late, so don't think of the Bengals defense as reliable for Week 7. They'll be fine if your other options are skittish, but other defenses should provide better stats for your Fantasy team this week.
News: The Bengals defense totaled two sacks and an interception at Tampa Bay in Week 6. They held the Bucs to seven points for most of the game before a very late TD catch for Michael Clayton gave the Bucs the lead. They also yielded over 300 total yards.
Analysis: The Bengals defense is far from dominant; if anything, they're a weak version of a bend-but-don't-break defense. Consider them risky options in the coming weeks, including vs. Carolina in Week 7.
News: The Patriots racked up 38 points and 424 yards of offense in Week 4 against the Bengals, making one of the league's best defense look like one of the worst. The Bengals did intercept a Tom Brady pass, but could not force a sack or a fumble.
Analysis: The Bengals couldn't go every week with shutting down potent offensive units. They had to have a bad week sometime. The Bengals have a bye week coming up, but return to action Week 6 at Tampa Bay. They will be the first test of new Bucs and rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski. There really is no other way to put it -- make sure to have the Bengals DST active in Week 6 against Tampa Bay.
News: The Bengals announced that LB Odell Thurman's suspension has been extended for a full year following his arrest for drunken driving after the Bengals' Week 3 game at Pittsburgh. He will be able to apply for reinstatement before the 2007 season. The NFL Substance Abuse Policy stipulates that it is a violation of the program should a player "fail to cooperate with testing, treatment, evaluation or other requirements imposed on him by this policy or fails to comply with his treatment plan." Coach Marvin Lewis said earlier this week that Thurman wasn't part of the team's plans for the season. "We have put this football team together without Odell Thurman for a long time, since March," Lewis said. Also Wednesday, the Bengals placed DE Frostee Rucker on injured reserve and signed LB Andre Frazier.
Analysis: Cincinnati's defense will be tested by the Patriots in Week 4, but expect the team to come up with a few takeaways. Use them as a starting unit.
News: The Bengals have the depth at linebacker to withstand the loss of former starter Odell Thurman for the season. Thurman, suspended for violating the leagues' substance abuse policy for four games before the season, was arrested for driving under the influence early Monday morning. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis made clear Monday afternoon that Thurman was likely done for 2006. "We have put this football team together without Odell Thurman for a long time, since March," Lewis said. Veteran Brian Simmons moved to the middle linebacker spot, and Landon Johnson and Rashad Jeanty had had most of the snaps as outside linebackers. Third-year pro Caleb Miller has eight defensive tackles and one special teams tackle in three games. Lewis said Monday that Miller is the No. 4 linebacker and the top backup at all three spots. The Bengals also used rookie Ahmad Brooks for the first time Sunday at Pittsburgh, and special teams ace Marcus Wilkins has received more snaps on defense.
Analysis: Cincinnati's defense faces the Patriots in Week 4 and should come up with some takeaways in the game. They are not great at stopping the run, and that's the one thing the Patriots can do well right now, but they remain a startable DST unit in Week 4.
News: The Bengals DST got three interceptions against the Steelers. They also got four sacks and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: DBs Kevin Kaesviharn, Deltha O'Neal and Madieu Williams all had interceptions. DE Justin Smith had five tackles and a sack. LB Robert Geathers had two sacks. And Kaesviharn recovered a fumble.

Bengals LB breaks neck
News: Linebacker David Pollack was placed on the injured reserve list Monday with a neck injury, but the Cincinnati Bengals expect him to be fully recovered for next season. Pollack was taken off the field on a neck board after making a tackle in the first quarter of a 34-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. He was later transferred to a local hospital, where he was put in a protective halo brace.
Analysis: Coach Marvin Lewis said Pollack's spinal cord wasn't damaged. He has full sensation in his arms and legs, and doctors are hopeful that the halo brace - which immobilizes the neck - will allow the injury to heal without surgery. Fantasy owners in IDP formats should cut ties with him now, however, as he won't play again this season. Despite the injury. the Bengals defense has looked great so far this season and way better than in 2005. Continue to play them while they are hot, which includes a date with Pittsburgh in Week 3.

Bengals D solid in win
News: The Bengals defense played well in Week 2 against the Browns limiting them to 301 yards and 17 points. They did intercept two passes and force one fumble, but record no sacks. DB Madieu Williams led the team with five tackles.

Bengals' D pumped up
News: According to The Cincinnati Post, the Bengals defense has renewed life in 2006 after having an abysmal year in 2005. With the addition of DT Sam Adams and S Dexter Jackson, the Bengals feel they now have what it takes to become one of the elite defenses in the NFL. After a stellar Week 1 in which the Bengals manhandled the Chiefs offense, including limiting Chiefs RB Larry Johnson to 68 rushing yards, they feel ready and capable to take on anyone. "We looked at that last year that we could have done a lot more than we did," cornerback Deltha O'Neal said in the report. "Our problem was stopping the run. We added some guys (Adams and Jackson) who can do that. It is only one game but we're looking at it as a good addition to our defense to help us be more successful against teams every weekend."
Analysis: After just one week of football it is too early to tell if the Bengals' D is much improved from a year ago, but containing one of the most productive offenses the past five years has to be a good sign. The Bengals are a good play in Week 2 seeing they are going to take on the Cleveland Browns, who have an absolutely terrible offensive line.

St. Louis doesn't play for Cincy
News: Bengals TE Brad St. Louis didn't record any offensive stats against K.C.
Analysis: St. Louis has no Fantasy value.
News: Cincinnati's offense is stellar, but the defense still has some question marks. The Bengals gave up an average of 30 points over their last eight games and allowed the seventh-most passing yards in the NFL (3,569). Plus, starting MLB Odell Thurman is suspended for the first four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Safety Madieu Williams knows Cincinnati's defense at some point is going to have to step up if the Bengals high-powered offense falters. "We just want to make sure to be consistent," said Williams, whose shoulder injury sidelined him for most of last season. "We're not a dominating defense -- yet. That's what we want to be by the end of the season."
Analysis: The Bengals defense led the NFL in takeaways with 44 in 2005, 31 of them coming on interceptions. They should continue to take the ball away in '06 but have yet to show they have the stuff to shut out an opponent. In Week 1, they'll face the Chiefs in Kansas City, which has all the makings of a high-scoring shootout. Avoid using the Bengals defense for the start of the season if at all possible.

DBs Bauman, Mitchell done for year?
News: According to published reports, S Anthony Mitchell has a Lisfranc (mid-foot) foot sprain and DB Rashad Bauman (knee) and might be lost for the 2006 season.
Analysis: Even if Bauman or Mitchell are dne for the year, the Bengals DST will not suffer much from a Fantasy perspective. However, the Bengals will lose some depth in their secondary.

Cincinnati DST injury news
News: The Bengals are dealing with several injuries on defense, according Bengals.com and the Cincinnati Enquirer. CB Greg Brooks (undisclosed), DLs Jonathan Fanene (hamstring) and rookie Frostee Rucker (undisclosed) and FS Kevin Kaesviharn (back) were all inactive for Friday's preseason game at Buffalo.
Analysis: On a positive note, DB Keiwan Ratliff had a 26-yard interception return for touchdown and DB Dexter Jackson had a 72-yard fumble return for a score in Friday's preseason game at Buffalo. The Bengals are a decent Fantasy DST and they are worth a look as a Top-12 defensive unit in most formats.

Thurman out for the season?
News: On the first day of training camp, when Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis wanted a fresh start to put a difficult offseason behind him, he said that middle linebacker Odell Thurman might not play at all this year. Thurman was suspended for four games by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy for a second time. Ninth-year veteran Brian Simmons will play middle linebacker. Pressed whether Thurman would show up and participate in training camp practice, which is allowed by the NFL, Lewis then said of the team's leading tackler in 2005, "We don't have to worry about that right now. It's a nebulous question. He's a non-factor."
Analysis: This is simply another in a long line of off-field gaffes the Bengals have had to endure this offseason. Losing Thurman will hurt Cincinnati, and it's enough to push the Bengals out of the top-12 Fantasy DST units. Consider them the top-of-the-line DST unit to own as a backup, making them worth a late-round pick in deeper drafts.

Another Bengal in trouble
News: Officers trying to arrest Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Matthias Askew after a parking violation used a Taser to subdue him and charged him with resisting arrest. The 24-year-old Askew struggled with officers trying to handcuff him Saturday evening and broke away before he was shocked, police spokesman Lt. Tom Lanter said. Askew ignored an officer's warning to move his illegally parked car and then refused to give his identification, Lanter said. Askew, also charged with obstructing official business, was released on his own recognizance and was scheduled to appear in court Monday, a jail official said.
Analysis: The 6-foot-5, 302-pound lineman was a fourth-round draft pick in 2004 from Michigan State. He played in five games as a rookie, but was active for only one game last season. The arrest came about a week after Bengals owner Mike Brown issued a statement to reassure fans the team has standards for its players. Three other Bengals have been charged with criminal offenses in recent months.

LB Thurman suspended four games
News: The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Odell Thurman has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Analysis: Thurman finished his rookie season with five interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 65 solo hits, five forced fumbles, four passes defensed and a defensive score. His absence will no doubt hurt the defense as a whole.

Bengals add LB Ahmad Brooks
News: In the 2006 NFL Supplemental Draft, the Bengals selected ILB Ahmad Brooks from Virginia with a third-round pick. "I've known Ahmad since he was in high school," said Bengals LB coach Ricky Hunley in a statement, "and there's no denying he has behaved through much of his career as a very immature individual. But I believe he's a young man who can learn to do things the right way, and he has exceptional talent as a player. He'll get the chance to show he can use that talent to help our team. What he does with it is up to him in the end."
Analysis: Brooks is a stunning player with a past riddled with knee, back and ankle injuries as well as a dismissal from the University of Virginia team for unspecified reasons (reports have surfaced saying he failed multiple drug tests). He won't improve the Bengals' defense unless he stays healthy, and then he has potential to be a starter and a contributor. Cincinnati's DST remains a top-12 unit for owners to consider on Draft Day.

Bengals take CB Joseph
News: The Bengals selected CB Johnathan Joseph with their first-round pick (24th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. The South Carolina standout will join three other defensive picks on the Bengals defense.
Analysis: Joseph certainly will add depth to Cincinnati's secondary. This is not an indication that the Bengals will switch to a 3-4 defense this year, although with the addition of DT Sam Adams, it certainly could look that way. If they do switch, they could be one of the better defenses in the AFC. They remain a top-12 Fantasy unit.

Lewis still thinking 3-4
News: Bengals.com has a story before the draft about the Bengals' D-linemen and if they can convert to a 3-4 defense. The team already signed DT Sam Adams, who could play on a 3-4 line, and could spend another pick on a lineman or a linebacker. Lewis won't speculate on the Bengals' defense. "We'll wait and see what happens after the draft," Lewis said.
Analysis: All indications point to the Bengals making the switch, which should result in better statistics for their linebackers. The Bengals are talented enough to be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
3/31/2006

Bengals to sign DT Adams
News: Bengals.com reports that a deal with DT Sam Adams is 'imminent,' reporting a three-year deal. This is a big sign that Cincinnati is going to a 3-4 defense since Adams fits in as a nose tackle grinder.
Analysis: If they are indeed switching schemes, then expect Cincy to take close to a year to fully become fluent with the nuances and differences between it and the 4-3 defense. Nevertheless, the Bengals are talented enough to be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST, so the addition of Adams only helps them.

Bengals moving to 3-4 defense?
News: Bengals.com reports that head coach Marvin Lewis is thinking about switching the team's defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. He also confirmed interest in free-agent LB LaVar Arrington and that the team will add a defensive lineman in the draft or free agency.
Analysis: The 3-4 scheme would be intriguing for Cincinnati, especially considering their glut of talented linebackers (Odell Thurman, Brian Simmons, David Pollack to name three). If they add Arrington, assume they will go to the 3-4. Either way, this unit should be one of the better options for Fantasy owners in 2006.

Bengals DST turnover kings
News: The Bengals defense led the NFL in takeaways with 44 in 2005, 31 of them coming on interceptions. That kept the Bengals DST as one of the top units in the game even though they ranked 28th overall in total defense.

Bengals must corral Roethlisberger
News: In two games in 2005, the Bengals saw Ben Roethlisberger throw for five touchdowns and 386 yards in their second contest. Pittsburgh's running attack has been very strong over their four-game winning streak, though, so either way the Bengals have to be prepared for a tough matchup all around.

Bengals have plan for Pitt's O
News: The Bengals would like nothing more than to have their offense control the clock, get a lead and keep the ball away from the Steelers as much as possible. A lead would force the Steelers not to run as much, possibly, and force the offense into the pass game with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who looked rusty after missing three games and has a sore thumb.

Bengals D gets into scuffle
News: According to published reports out of Cincinnati, Bengals defensive lineman Carl Powell and defensive back Reggie Myles got into a scuffle in the locker room on Thursday. Powell picked up defensive back Reggie Myles and threw him down to the ground. The incident occurred in the equipment room, adjacent to the locker room, and touched off a 20-minute shouting match that spilled into the locker room and involved several other Bengals players.
Analysis: Maybe they were fighting over who would cover Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Edgerrin James and the rest of the Colts high-flying offensive weapons that they'll face in Week 11. Consider the Bengals DST a tough start this week due to the rough matchup.

News: The Bengals put safety Madieu Williams on injured reserve Monday, ending his season a week after he had shoulder surgery.
Analysis: The second-year starter played in the first four games, then hurt his shoulder in practice Sept. 30. Kevin Kaesviharn will likely start at free safety now for the staunch Bengals defense. The Bengals play at Baltimore in Week 9. The Bengals lead the NFL with 20 interceptions, getting five in a game for the third time this season.
