News: The Cowboys moved up and took LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick in the draft, but he wasn't their only defensive pick. The Cowboys also picked up Boise State defensive end Tyrone Crawford, Wake Forest linebacker Kyle Wilber, Eastern Washington safety Matt Johnson and Montana linebacker Caleb McSurdy.
Analysis: Claiborne should do for the Cowboys what his college teammate, Patrick Peterson, did for the Cardinals: Provide a punch on special teams and come into his own on defense. The additions of Dan Connor at linebacker, Brandon Carr at cornerback and Brodney Pool at safety also help the future of this unit. Despite their poor play last year (with different cornerbacks and a weakness in the middle of the defense), the Cowboys DST strikes us as one worth drafting with a final-round pick this season. Just be prepared to deal with their tough first game: at the Super Bowl Champion Giants in Week 1.
News: The Cowboys defense had a hard time slowing down the Giants in Week 17. Dallas allowed 437 yards of total offense, including 331 through the air, and could not cause a turnover in the 31-14 loss. New York also ran for 106 yards and a touchdown. LB DeMarcus Ware led the Cowboys with 1.5 sacks.
Analysis: The Cowboys struggled against the pass all season long and it ended up burning them on Sunday. They will have to address their secondary in the offseason, but their front-seven and linebackers appear to be solid. Keep an eye on what Dallas does in the offseason. With a little boost, the Cowboys DST should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy option on Draft Day in 2012.

News: The Cowboys gave up 510 yards of total offense, including 400 through the air, when they faced the Giants earlier in the year and could be in for a similar performance in Week 17. New York boasts the fourth-best passing attack in the NFL, putting up over 293 yards per game, but ranks dead last in rushing. Dallas ranks seventh in the league against the run and 23rd in pass defense. The Cowboys have recorded 40 sacks thus far with 15 interceptions and one DST score.
Analysis: Dallas had a hard time slowing down the Giants when they faced them in Week 14 and with both teams vying for a playoff spot on Sunday, it will likely be another shootout. That being the case, consider the Cowboys DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: The Cowboys couldn't do much on Saturday against the Eagles. They allowed Michael Vick to throw for 293 yards and a touchdown, but did limit him to just 10 rushing yards. The Eagles managed to gain over 100 yards on the ground between four players. Still, Dallas could manage just two sacks on Vick and despite throwing him to the ground hard a few times. The Eagles went on to beat the Cowboys, 20-7.
Analysis: Dallas will have another tough matchup next weekend as they face New York for the NFC East crown. In the last meeting the Giants scored 37 points on the Cowboys. Plus some of the main stars -- DeMarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff and Sean Lee are banged up. If they are 100 percent they could do some damage, but based on the recent play the Cowboys DST is a No. 2 option in Fantasy leagues.
News: Dallas hosts Philadelphia in Week 16 and will look to contain Michael Vick. Vick, who has been dealing with a rib injury, seems to be a go for the game. In the team's first meeting Vick threw for 279 yards and two touchdown passes and ran for 50 yards. Dallas also has to deal with one of the best running backs in the league in LeSean McCoy. The Cowboys held Tampa Bay to just seven first downs and 58 yards on the ground last weekend, and would love to do the same to McCoy.
Analysis: Fantasy owners wish the Cowboys could face the Bucs again this weekend, because this Saturday won't be as easy. Opposing defenses are averaging 9.86 Fantasy points per contest versus the Eagles. Philadelphia has a ton of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and put up 34 points on Dallas in their lone meeting earlier this season and put a bunch of points on the score board last weekend. Fantasy owners should look for a better matchup for Week 16, as the Cowboys DST should be viewed as a No. 2 option.
News: The Cowboys surrendered eight points on just 190 total yards of offense in Week 15 against the Buccaneers. The unit was able to put consistent pressure on Josh Freeman all game long and force a fumble in the first quarter, which led to a touchdown. The Cowboys held Tampa Bay to just seven first downs and 58 yards on the ground in the 31-15 contest.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense dominated the line of scrimmage on Saturday night, and really set the tone for the game. The unit was able to force consistent pressure on the QB and really seemed take Tampa Bay out of their gameplan on offense. However, things will likely be a bit more challenging for the unit when the Eagles come to town in Week 16. Philadelphia has a ton of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and put up 34 points on Dallas in their lone meeting earlier this season. Consider the Cowboys a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST next Saturday.
News: The Dallas defense will look to rebound in Week 15 against Tampa Bay following its late meltdown in a loss to the Giants last Sunday. Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said the two-minute defense has been a sore point for the team all season as evidenced by their loss to New York when it relinquished a 12-point lead during the fourth quarter in a crucial division game. Its a real problem for us this year," Ryan said. "I take responsibility. Im calling the plays, so its all on me." The 37 points marked only the third time this year Dallas has allowed 30-plus points.
Analysis: The Cowboys permitted a season-high 510 total yards to the Giants, including 400 passing by QB Eli Manning. But yards aside, the Dallas defense had too many costly penalties and couldnt get off the field when New York was driving for two touchdowns in the final six minutes. The Cowboys also failed to register a sack for only the second time this season and first occasion since Week 4. The Buccaneers have struggled mightily and QB Josh Freeman has thrown 18 picks this season. Consider Dallas a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 15.
News: Dallas had allowed fewer than 20 points in four of their last five games, but they ran into a Giants offense that has been rolling in recent weeks in Week 14. The Giants strength proved to be greater, and the Cowboys had no answer for a balanced attack that saw Eli Manning throw for 400 yards and Brandon Jacobs rush for 100. The Cowboys failed to get to Manning at all, registering zero sacks, and they forced just one turnover, an interception by Sean Lee just outside of the red zone in the fourth quarter. However, the Giants would march right down the field the next two times they got the ball and scored two touchdowns to win the game 37-34 in the final minute. The Cowboys gave up 510 yards of total offense in the game.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST had been pretty good this season, reaching 10 Fantasy points eight different times. However, the Giants came into the game having put up more than 900 yards of total offense and 59 points in their previous two games, and they kept going right through the Cowboys. It was surprising to see the Giants run the ball so well against them, and it was especially surprising to see the Cowboys fail to get to the quarterback, as they had 35 sacks as a team prior to Week 14. The good news is they face a Buccaneers team in Week 15 that turns the ball over more than twice per game on average, and turned it over seven times in Week 14, including two fumbles that the Jaguars recovered for touchdowns. The Cowboys should remain a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in Week 15 even after getting lit up by New York.
News: The last time the Cowboys faced their Week 14 opponent, the divisional rival New York Giants, the Cowboys got the best of them, forcing three turnovers and holding them to twenty points despite 480 yards of total offense in a Week 10 33-20 victory. They come into Week 14 facing a Giants team that is rolling, having put up 447 and 465 yards over the last two games while scoring 59 points total.
Analysis: The Cowboys have been a pretty useful DST unit this season, reaching 10 points eight different times this season, while falling below nine points just twice. However, Week 14 poses a very bad matchup for them. New York has the worst rushing offense in the league, however they still ninth in the league in total offense because Eli Manning has been so proficient at throwing the ball, ranking fourth in the league in passing yards as a team. The Cowboys gave up 65 points in two games to the Giants last season. The Cowboys DST unit is not a recommended play against the formidable Giants offense, and they should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy unit for Week 14.
News: Dallas held Arizona to 49 total yards of offense in the first half, and sacked Kevin Kolb four times. Things changed after that as the Cowboys allowed the Cards to gain 79 yards on the opening drive of the second half, but held them to a field goal. Dallas has allowed Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Marshall and now Andre Roberts to top 100 yards receiving against them over the past three weeks. The Cowboys also gave up a big 52-yard touchdown pass to LaRod Stephens-Howling in overtime. Dallas would lose the game, 19-13. The Cowboys did pile up five sacks, but did not force a turnover.
Analysis: Dallas held Beanie Wells to 67 yards on the ground on Sunday, but couldn't do too much else. Even though they pressured Kolb and got to him, he didn't make mistakes for the Cowboys to capitalize on. In Week 14 Dallas hosts New York, which has performed well offensively this season. Fantasy owners should view the Cowboys DST as a solid option for Week 14.
News: After missing four games because of a hamstring injury, Dallas DB Mike Jenkins said he felt good after Wednesday's practice. "I opened it up, and I felt pretty good," he said. "They probably want to see a little more out of me before they give me the OK. But I felt pretty good. The Cowboys have been banged up in the secondary this season, so getting Jenkins back will be a plus. In Week 13 Dallas travels to Arizona and will have to deal with Larry Fitzgerald. I'm not too much worried about guarding any opponents, its about me right now getting back healthy," Jenkins said. "Ive faced him before. Hes really good, but Im not thinking about that. The quarterback situation for the Cardinals is a bit murky as Kevin Kolb is hoping to return as the starter over John Skelton.
Analysis: No matter which quarterback is at the helm for the Cardinals, the Cowboys should focus on shutting down RB Beanie Wells. Wells is coming off a career game in Week 12, but is also banged up. If Dallas can contain him, the passing attack of Arizona isn't enough to get the job done. Opposing DSTs are averaging 13.09 Fantasy points per contest against the Cardinals. Fantasy owners should consider the Cowboys DST as a No. 1 option for Week 13.
News: The Cowboys DST did not do much Thursday against Miami on Thanksgiving Day in Week 12. The Cowboys had just one turnover with a DeMarcus Ware fumble recovery, and they had four sacks in a 20-19 victory. On special teams, Felix Jones had four kickoff returns for 74 yards to lead the way in the return game.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST should play better in Week 13 at Arizona. Look for them to have a solid performance and consider the Cowboys DST a starting option in most formats.
News: The Cowboys will be going up against a Dolphins team in Week 12 that they match up very well with. Miami enters Thursday ranked 15th in the league in rushing, averaging over 112 yards per game, and 25th in passing. Dallas ranks sixth and 10th in the NFL against the pass and run, respectively. The Cowboys have recorded 26 sacks thus far with 14 interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has been playing well lately and has forced nine turnovers in the last three games against the Seahawks, Bills and Redskins. Heading into Week 12 at home against Miami, the Cowboys DST should once again be in for a solid effort. Owners would be wise to start the Cowboys DST in many Fantasy formats for Week 12, despite the Dolphins playing much better football lately.
News: The Cowboys DST earned a hard-fought win over Washington on Sunday of Week 11 as Dallas won 27-24 in overtime on a field goal from Dan Bailey. The Cowboys DST gave up 336 yards of offense to Rex Grossman and the Redskins in the win. The Cowboys DST forced two turnovers in the game as Grossman threw a pick and Fred Davis lost a fumble. The Cowboys DST managed three sacks of Grossman.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has been playing well lately and has forced nine turnovers in the last three games against the Seahawks, Bills and Redskins. Heading into Week 12 at home against Miami, the Cowboys DST should once again be in for a solid effort. Fantasy owners would be wise to start the Cowboys DST in many Fantasy formats for Week 12, despite the Dolphins playing much better football lately.
News: The Cowboys DST is visiting our Nation's Capital at the right time Week 11. The Washington Redskins' offense is downright disgusting at the moment. The team may be getting back the services of Santana Moss, but lost Leonard Hankerson for the season last week. They are already without Chris Cooley and Tim Hightower and the quarterback situation is a joke. With Rex Grossman quarterbacking, the turnovers should be flying. The Redskins have lost five straight games and have scored a total of 53 points over that span for an average of just under 11 points per game.
Analysis: While the Redskins have been absolutely dismal on offense, with no signs of improving, the Cowboys DST has been excellent lately. The unit has allowed just 20 points the last two games to the Seahawks and Bills and just forced four turnovers against Buffalo with a DTD in Week 10 as Terrence Newman returned an INT for a TD. The Cowboys DST is on a roll at the moment and the Redskins offense is just flat. Fantasy owners would be wise to start the Cowboys DST in all Fantasy formats for Week 11.
News: The Cowboys defense was as efficient as their offense in a 44-7 rout of the Bills in Week 10. Dallas held Buffalo's offense to 271 yards and one offensive touchdown. Buffalo did gain 135 yards on the ground, but Dallas picked off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick three times, including two from Terrence Newman, who returned his second one 43 yards for a touchdown. Dallas had just one sack but forced four turnovers.
Analysis: Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan must have called up brother Rex, who helped orchestrate Week 9 a defense that helped the Jets contain the Bills offense, for advice about how to shut down Buffalo. Because the Bills were stymied again by a Ryan-coached defense. While the Bills became the third straight team to rush for 100-plus yards against the Cowboys, LB Sean Lee returned from a wrist injury and his presence still made an impact. The Cowboys hit the road Week 11 to face a struggling Redskins offense, so make sure to start the Cowboys DST.
News: The Dallas Cowboys defense is suddenly getting run over. Rob Ryan's group was the league's top rushing defense only two weeks ago. Then LeSean McCoy of Philadelphia ran for a career-high 185 yards against them and Seattle's Marshawn Lynch followed with his first 100-yard game in nearly three years. After allowing only 418 rushing yards the first six games, the Cowboys have allowed 401 the last two -- both coming when Dallas lost leading tackler Sean Lee, who dislocated his left wrist at Philadelphia and then missed the Seattle game. Dallas has gone from allowing only 70 yards rushing per game to 100, now 10th in the NFL. Coach Jason Garrett believes the Cowboys (4-4) just have to improve their execution. "There have been some plays that teams have run against us, but we've defended those runs throughout the year as well. It's not the first time we've seen that," Garrett said. "The thing that makes us feel good is we've defended the run really well for a large portion of the season. We've just got to get back to doing that."
Analysis: The Cowboys better fix things fast with Buffalo and Fred Jackson, the NFL's third-leading rusher, heading to town for a Week 10 showdown. Jackson already has five 100-yard rushing games this season, and his 803 yards trail only McCoy (825) and Chicago's Matt Forte (805). Jackson also has 30 catches for 391 yards, and is the first Buffalo player since Thurman Thomas with 1,100 yards from scrimmage in the first eight games of a season. The good news for the Cowboys is that Lee is planning to play with a cast Sunday, so his presence should help boost the run defense. The Bills still can put up some points, so consider the Cowboys DST more of a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 10.
News: The Cowboys entered Week 9 as one of the best teams in the league in defending the run, but Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch ran up 135 yards against them, though Dallas emerged with a 23-13 win. With help from Lynch, Seattle mustered 381 total yards of offense, as the Cowboys struggled to contain the Seahawks with LB Sean Lee out due to a wrist injury. While the Cowboys weren't as potent against the run, they held the passing game in check, intercepting QB Tarvaris Jackson three times and not allowing any passing touchdowns. Also, the special teams unit blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by K Steven Hauschka.
Analysis: It wasn't the best of weeks for Dallas' defense, but a trio of interceptions salvaged the afternoon. Though they will have a more difficult assignment in Week 10 against the Bills, the Cowboys could still be worth using as a No. 1 DST. Owners on the fence about whether to start them should be sure to check on the injury status of Lee, as he could help them to rebound if healthy next week.
News: The Cowboys' DST enters Week 9 ranking just 17th in Fantasy points scored this season, but they will have a good chance to improve their ranking with their next matchup. Seattle is next on the Cowboys' schedule, and the Seahawks have scored the sixth-fewest points per game in the league, and only the Jaguars have amassed fewer yards of offense per game. Also, the Seahawks have absorbed the most sacks in the league, and they are tied for eighth with 13 turnovers.
Analysis: Though the Cowboys' DST has rarely been worth starting this year, they are worth a look in Week 9. The Seahawks offer them one of the best matchups that they will have all year, so particularly for owners looking for a bye-week replacement, the Cowboys can serve as a viable No. 1 DST unit.
News: The Cowboys could not slow down the Eagles' offense in Week 8. Philadelphia racked up 495 yards of total offense and ran for 239 yards against Dallas' No. 1 ranked run defense in the 34-7 loss. RB LeSean McCoy ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns while QB Michael Vick passed for 279 yards and two more scores. The lone bright spot on defense for the Cowboys was LB DeMarcus Ware, who recorded a career-high four sacks.
Analysis: The Cowboys stout run defense was nowhere to be found on Sunday night and after gashing with some big runs, the Eagles they started throwing all over Dallas. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will have to go back to the drawing board after this shellacking but luckily he has Seattle up next on the schedule. Despite their poor performance, consider the Cowboys DST as a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 9.
News: The Cowboys defense will have their hands full in Week 8 against the Eagles. Philadelphia sports the NFL's No. 1 rushing attack and rank eighth in passing. Dallas enters Sunday ranked first in the league in run defense but 14th against the pass. The Cowboys have recorded 17 sacks thus far with seven interceptions.
Analysis: The Cowboys have allowed more than 30 points just once through their first six games while the Eagles average 24 points per contest. Even though Dallas has been very stingy against the run, QB Michael Vick can make plays through the air just as easily as he does on the ground. This matchup could end up being a shootout so owners would be wise to consider the Cowboys DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 8.
News: The Cowboys held the Rams to 265 total yards of offense in Week 7. They gave up 70 yards on the ground and a score to RB Steven Jackson, but St. Louis would muster little else offensively with A.J. Feeley at the helm. Dallas would sack Feeley once, but put a ton of pressure on him. Mike Jenkins picked Feeley off once and the Cowboys recovered a Cadillac Williams' fumble. Dallas went on to win the game, 34-7.
Analysis: The Cowboys get a shot at Michael Vick and the Eagles in Week 8. Philly can score and put up points, so this will be a task for the Cowboys. Still, Dallas boasts the best run-stopping defenses in the league and should be considered a viable DST option for Week 8.
News: Dallas boasts the best run defense in the league (69.6 yards per contest) and have allowed just one rushing score in five games. The Cowboys also held one of the best offenses -- New England -- to 289 passing yards last week. This Sunday the Cowboys get the Rams, who may not have Sam Bradford at the helm. If that's the case, Dallas can focus even more on the running game and try to contain Steven Jackson.
Analysis: DSTs are averaging 16.80 Fantasy points per game versus the Rams this season. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan had a plan for Tom Brady last week, so one has to think he'll be ready for the Rams in Week 7. Fantasy owners should continue to view Dallas' DST as a No. 1 option.
News: The Cowboys entered Week 6 against the Patriots with a gameplan to slow down the offense. They were doing a lot of things right on Sunday, as Terence Newman intercepted Tom Brady early in the game. Newman later recovered a fumble -- the first one in 389 offensive plays for New England this year -- as the Cowboys seemed to be in control. The held Brady to 289 passing yards and picked him off twice, as well as recording three sacks on him. But the Patriots rallied to take the lead, winning the game 20-16.
Analysis: Dallas did so many things right, but they couldn't get the job done against New England. Looking ahead to Week 7, the Cowboys host the Rams, a team has struggled offensively this season. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will likely have something cooked up for Sam Bradford on Sunday, making Dallas' DST a solid option for Week 7.
News: The Cowboys blew a big lead the last time they took the field. Now with two weeks to prepare, Dallas takes aim at New England's potent offense in Week 6. LB DeMarcus Ware said the Cowboys can learn a lot from Clevelands 34-14 win over New England last year, especially with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan now on his side. They played a fundamentally sound game against the Patriots. They werent just sitting ducks and let (Tom) Brady pick them apart all day. They moved around all day and disguised their coverage well.
Analysis: Dallas has a tough matchup this week, but if Rob Ryan can orchestrate something to slow down Brady again the Cowboys will have a shot. But considering the team's struggles on defense this year, Fantasy owners should view Dallas' DST as a No. 2 option for this week.
News: The Cowboys shut down the Lions for much of the first half in Week 4, allowing just three points. However, they allowed 31 points in the second half to give up what was at one point a 27-3 lead and resulted in a 34-30 loss. Dallas allowed the 34 points along with 303 yards of offense. They forced one turnover in the game (an interception) and finished the game without a sack.
Analysis: The collapsed marked the biggest blown lead in team history. They had QB Matthew Stafford tied up in knots for much of the game, but began to crumble after the Cowboys offense allowed momentum to shift. Up 27-3 in the third quarter, QB Tony Romo threw interceptions that were returned for touchdowns on consecutive drives. So, through no fault of the defense, the Lions scored 14 quick points. If there were any positives to take from this meltdown, it is that the Cowboys held a very potent Lions offense in check for much of the game. The Cowboys can typically get after the quarterback plenty with pass rushers like DeMarcus Ware in the fold and tend to force a good amount of turnovers. So while this poor effort could put a bad taste in your mouth, we still recommend stashing the Cowboys defense in most standard 12-team formats. With that in mind, you'll have to look elsewhere for a unit to start in Week 5 with Dallas on a bye. Then, in Week 6, you may have to stick with alternatives with Dallas having a very tough matchup against an even better New England offense.
News: The Cowboys will be against one of the most potent offenses of the young NFL season in Week 4 when they host the Lions. Through the first three weeks, they have averaged 400 yards of offense per game with 101 points scored (good for third in the league).
Analysis: Lions QB Matthew Stafford has thrown just two interceptions this season. The team has not lost a fumble yet this season, though they have put it on the ground four times. They did not give up a sack through the first two weeks of the season, but are coming off a game against the Vikings in Week 3 in which they gave up five sacks. With the pass rushing prowess the Cowboys have, this could be an area to be exploited. Expect the Lions to put up some points and yardage, but the Cowboys could offset some of that with their ability to get after the QB with guys like DeMarcus Ware. Given this tough matchup, however, we view the Cowboys as a very low-end play this week.
News: The Cowboys DST came up with a huge blocked field goal in the second quarter of the Monday night win over the Redskins Week 3. On a bad hold from Sav Rocca, Washington kicker Graham Gano had his field goal attempt blocked and the Cowboys won the game 18-16 on six field goals of their own. The Cowboys DST held Washington to just 298 total yards and almost nothing in the second half. The Cowboys forced two turnovers, one on an interception of Rex Grossman, and one on a fumble lost by Grossman on the final drive to end the game. Dallas sacked Grossman three times in the win.
Analysis: Grossman was protected fairly well all game and DeMarcus Ware and company still got him for three sacks. That is 13 sacks in three games for the Cowboys DST, heading into Week 4 against the high-scoring Lions. The Cowboys haven't been great at forcing turnovers and the Lions will score plenty in Week 4. That said, we still like the Cowboys DST as a unit worth starting.
News: The Cowboys DST will look to slow down the Redskins in Week 3. After getting gashed by the Jets in the season opener the unit was able to limit the 49ers to just 206 yards of total offense, while racking up six sacks and forcing a turnover. The Redskins enter Monday night's contest averaging 270.5 yards of total offense and 25 points per game. The Cowboys DST is currently ranked 11th, in terms of Fantasy points, and have racked up 10 sacks and forced three turnovers thus far.
Analysis: Dallas played much better on the defensive side of the ball in Week 1, especially when Tony Romo was out of the game with an injury. While the Cowboys defense is still adjusting to new defensive coordinator Bob Ryan, the unit seems to showing some signs of improvement from a season ago and should only continue to get better as the season progresses. The unit is also still missing some key pieces on defense, so Fantasy owners should continue and view Dallas' DST as a No. 2 option heading into Week 3.
News: Dallas sacked San Francisco QB Alex Smith six times in Week 2 and put a lot of pressure on him all afternoon. Alan Ball also picked Smith off, which put a quick end to a 49er drive. Even though the defensive unit was without Terence Newman and Orlando Scandrick, they still held Smith to under 200 yards passing. Dallas would go on to win the game, 27-24. They also held the 49ers to a total of 74 yards on the ground, 47 going to Frank Gore.
Analysis: Dallas stepped up on defensive, especially when Tony Romo was out of the game with an injury. The Cowboys are still adjusting to Bob Ryan's system, but if they can keep their penalties down, this defense could be very dangerous. Heading into Week 3, the Cowboys host the Redskins on Monday night. Fantasy owners should continue to view Dallas' DST as a No. 2 option until they get everyone healthy.
News: The Dallas defense got picked a part in Week 1 by the Jets. In Week 2, a beat up secondary, will take on Alex Smith and the 49ers. DB Terence Newman won't be taking the field, which is definitely a big hit for the Cowboys. Despite it all, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said on Friday his guys are ready to go. "Weve got a nice plan here," Ryan said. "Were ready to go against these guys.
Analysis: The Cowboys were able to sack QB Mark Sanchez four times and picked him off once. Smith didn't make any mistakes last weekend, so Dallas will have to step up their game this week. Fantasy owners should continue to view the Cowboys as more of a No. 2 DST option until they get healthy and show up on Sunday.
News: The Cowboys defense did a solid job stopping the run in Week 1 against the Jets but they had a hard time defending the pass. Dallas held New York to 45 yards on the ground but gave up 315 yards through the air in the 27-24 loss. The Cowboys were able to sack QB Mark Sanchez four times and picked him off once.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST nearly had a touchdown on Sunday but it was ruled that Sean Lee was down at the 1-yardline after picking off Sanchez. Without Terence Newman in the secondary, Dallas had a hard time stopping the pass, and that could become a re-occurring theme. They will have to step it up on defense before becoming a more reliable Fantasy option so consider the Cowboys as more of a No. 2 DST for Week 2 against the 49ers.
News: The Cowboys head into Week 1 against the Jets without one of the key pieces of their secondary. CB Terence Newman has already been ruled out of Sunday's game due to a groin injury, further hindering a defense that gave up over 243 yards per contest a year ago. One of Dallas' strengths, however, is their run defense, which held teams to 108 yards per game in 2010.
Analysis: The Jets are much better at running the ball than passing but given the Cowboys current state in the secondary, QB Mark Sanchez should be able to make some big plays through the air. Dallas could also been down CB Mike Jenkins, but hopefully new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will be able to get creative on defense. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 1.
News: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn't optimistic about CB Terence Newmans chances to play Sunday against the Jets. He didnt practice so were not considering him for the Jets, Jones said. Hes a guy that has to have it just right. So were going to try and let it be right.
Analysis: Newman hasn't missed a regular season game since the 2008 season and is the Cowboys' best cornerback when healthy. They want him on the field, and so do Fantasy owners. But Newman appears out Week 1, so IDP owners need to have a healthy alternative available. Dallas could also been down CB Mike Jenkins, so they could enter Week 1 with a banged up secondary. New York isn't a pass-happy team, but they could take advantage of the air game if Dallas is dinged up. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end No. 1 option for Week 1.
News: Cowboys DB Terence Newman, who missed the preseason with a groin injury, didn't practice Monday and now coach Jason Garrett is growing concerned about his availability for the season opener against the Jets. "The degree to which he has to practice, we don't have any concrete rules about," Garrett said. "But you have to practice. We have to have a great feeling about him having prepared on the practice field before playing in the game Sunday night."
Analysis: Newman hasn't missed a regular season game since the 2008 season and is the Cowboys' best cornerback when healthy. They want him on the field, and so do Fantasy owners. But Newman is looking iffy for Week 1, so IDP owners need to have a healthy alternative available.
News: The Cowboys spent a second-round pick on the defensive side of the ball, going with UNC LB Bruce Carter. Carter is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in college and is expected to battle for an inside linebacker job this summer. He's expected to battle for a starting job once he's healthy. The Cowboys also drafted Buffalo CB Josh Thomas.
Analysis: New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan didn't get a bunch of new toys added to his defense, but the one that he did get should end up helping on rushing downs. The Cowboys DST did not play well in 2010, but with Ryan now in charge of a unit that couldn't take orders from Wade Phillips, the expectations are high. Remember, Ryan made mountains out of molehills in Oakland and Cleveland, so he should be able to develop Mt. Everest here. We think the Cowboys DST rebounds in 2011 and is worth a final-round draft pick. They'll start the 2011 season against the Jets, Rob Ryan's brother's team.
News: Dallas' new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is already placing high expectations on the Cowboys defense for the upcoming season. "I think we're going to be a very good defense," he said Thursday. "I haven't been around this much talent before. We're going to be ready to go right away -- I'm excited." Ryan, who was hired as the team's defensive coordinator on Jan. 19, spent the last two seasons as Cleveland's DC and has previously held the title with Oakland. Last season, Dallas underachieved and finished with the NFL's 23rd-ranked overall defense. The Cowboys surrendered a franchise-high 436 points, which was the most in the NFC and above only Denver (471) for most points allowed in the entire league. Ryan said he will keep the 3-4 scheme implemented years ago by Bill Parcells, but will deploy it differently to confuse opposing quarterbacks.
Analysis: Ryan -- outspoken just like his twin brother, Jets coach Rex Ryan -- certainly didn't waste much time making his presence felt during his first gathering with reporters. "(Dallas coach Jason Garret) hired me to run the defense and not give out public speaking deals," he said. "I will be ready to go. I will be a strength, not a liability." With the Browns last season, Ryan's defense allowed more than 25 points in a game just three times. Conversely, the Cowboys yielded 35.8 points during a devastating five-game losing skid in the middle of the season that contributed to a 6-10 season. "It starts with attitude," Ryan said. "We're going to attack people. We've got to be on the offensive as defensive players -- attack and get the ball back for our offense." With the defensive pedigree Ryan possesses, there certainly is reason for optimism in Dallas and for Fantasy owners. Consider the Cowboys a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST in 2011.
News: The Cowboys have finally announced the official hiring of Rob Ryan to become the next defensive coordinator. Ryan, who interviewed initially last Friday, arrived to the teams headquarters on Wednesday ready to work. The club just sent out a press release and Ryan was not available for comment. Ryan spent the last two season's as the Browns DC and held the same job with the Raiders for five years before Cleveland. He runs the 3-4 scheme, so there will be little change in the grand scheme of things considering Dallas already has most of the necessary personnel in place.
Analysis: Dallas has the players to run a solid defense, but the unit underachieved in 2010, finishing the year as 23rd-ranked defense overall. Ryan brings more energy and risk into the unit, as they will likely blitz more than they did under the more conservative Wad Phillips last season. The defense has solid talent, and more should be added through the draft and possibly free agency. The defense ended the season poor, but showed flashes of strength throughout the year. With Ryan at the helm, they are that much closer to becoming a No. 1 Fantasy DST. For now, we'll call them a low-end No. 1 unit that should be selected after the elite DSTs are off of the board on Draft Day.
News: The Cowboys defense had a dominant performance in Week 17 against the Eagles. They held Philadelphia to just 244 yards of total offense and made a huge play in the second quarter. Dallas tied the game at 7 in the second quarter when DeMarcus Ware returned a fumble 17 yards for a touchdown. Anthony Spencer stripped Kevin Kolb, who was scrambling, and Ware picked the ball up and ran untouched into the end zone. The Cowboys only allowed one touchdown in the 14-13 win.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has been pretty inconsistent this season but they finished the season strong and have a lot of build on heading into next year. They can obviously get pressure on opposing quarterbacks but they will have to improve their secondary if they want to win some more games. With the season over, plan on targeted the Cowboys DST as a low-end Fantasy option on Draft Day in 2011.
News: The Cowboys have had a down season but will look to finish strong in Week 17 against the Eagles. Dallas enters Sunday ranked 14th in the league in run defense, giving up over 107 yards per contest, and 27th against the pass. Philadelphia, who has already locked up the No. 3 seed in the NFC, sports the third-best rushing attack in the NFL and rank eighth in passing. The Eagles will most likely be without QB Michael Vick (quadriceps) for the season finale.
Analysis: The Cowboys have given up an average of 30-plus points over their last five contests but will likely not be facing a lot of first-stringers on Sunday. With Philadelphia having punched their ticket to the playoffs, they will likely rest most, if not all, of their starters. Dallas allowed 30 points and 429 yards of total offense when the teams met earlier in the year, but they should be able to limit the Eagles backups this time around. Even though the Eagles will to being going full-blown in Week 17, still view the Cowboys DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Cowboys DST did a decent job at limiting the points and yards of the Cardinals in Arizona in the Week 16 game on Saturday of Christmas. Unfortunately, the Cardinals' defense did just enough for the team to take a big early lead and the Cowboys DST could not hold on to a small lead after a botched extra point by David Buehler on the go-ahead touchdown with minutes to play in the fourth. The Cowboys DST held the Cardinals to just 13 offensive points in the 27-26 loss and Arizona managed just 271 yards of offense. The Cowboys DST forced no turnovers in the game against the unseasoned QB John Skelton and sacked Skelton just once.
Analysis: While the Cowboys DST limited the yards and points of the Cardinals in the Week 16 loss, Arizona isn't exactly an offensive powerhouse. The Cowboys did nothing in terms of big plays and couldn't even get to the quarterback. They have not been a reliable Fantasy unit in a while and that will continue in Week 17 at Philadelphia.
News: The Cowboys DST have not been a great unit this season and heading into Week 16 at Arizona on Christmas Day, Fantasy owners likely have a more reliable option on their roster. That said, the Cowboys DST did manage a season-high five sacks last week against Washington and Arizona's unseasoned John Skelton better watch out.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is out for blood in Week 16 in Arizona. The team has been embarrassed enough this year and the Cardinals are the right type of opponent to beat up on. The Cardinals give up the second-most average Fantasy points per game to opposing DST units and that has the Cowboys licking their collective lips for this matchup. As we said, Fantasy owners will likely trust the units that got them this far at this point in the season, but the Cowboys DST is definitely worth using as a No. 1 Fantasy unit for Week 16.
News: The Cowboys DST almost could not stop the Redskins in the second half. Any unit that allows Rex Grossman to throw four touchdowns and to top 300 yards has to be a little embarrassed by their effort. Still, they came up big when it mattered most as Terence Newman intercepted Grossman to end the game. The Cowboys DST allowed 341 total yards but forced three turnovers as Grossman had two picks and a fumble in the game. Dallas also managed to sack Grossman five times with DeMarcus Ware getting two of them. Gerald Sensabaugh had the other interception, though he left the game with a concussion and could not return. The Cowboys also lost Sean Lee to a concussion in the game.
Analysis: Cowboys DST owners will forgive the big game from Grossman when they find out about the three turnovers forced and five sacks. The five sacks were a season high for Dallas, which has an interception in six straight games and 12 total over that span. The Cowboys should continue to be viewed as a solid Fantasy unit for Week 16 at Arizona. That said, there should be better options readily available.
News: The Cowboys DST has not been able to limit yards or points lately and only two defensive and special teams touchdowns in Week 13 at Indianapolis saved them from three straight poor efforts. Heading into Week 15 against Washington, the Cowboys DST is definitely struggling, having allowed at least 30 points and 400 yards in each of the last three games. They could show improvement Week 15 as the Redskins are allowing the seventh-most average Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs.
Analysis: The Redskins don't have much left to play for and they have been susceptible to turning the ball over and allowing sacks this season to say the least. The Cowboys DST faced the Redskins in Washington Week 1 and came away with a decent game but managed just nine Fantasy points. One thing seems certain, the Redskins should give up at least eight Fantasy points to the Cowboys DST. That is considering they haven't allowed fewer than eight Fantasy points to any DST since Week 2 of the season. The Cowboys DST will have a solid game, but there are better Fantasy options out there. Start them if you must.
News: The Cowboys defense was able to get to Eagles QB Michael Vick in the Week 14 matchup, but they were not able to stop him. The lefty accounted for three touchdowns in the Philadelphia win, and it started from the beginning. On the first play of the game, he hit WR DeSean Jackson on a 60-yard pass that set up a rushing TD. Later in the game the two connected on a 91-yard TD pass, the longest in the NFL this season. In between the two big plays, Bradie James and Gerald Sensabaugh were able to intercept Vick, while Orlando Scandrick and Jay Ratliff were able to sack him. Still, Dallas came up short against the Eagles after allowing them to rack up 30 points and 429 yards.
Analysis: The Eagles came into the game with the NFL's top-ranked offense, so the yardage and points were not a surprise. Dallas has become a defense that lives and dies by the big play, and Jackson's 91-yarder was too much to overcome. They had one last chance to stop Philly, but RB LeSean McCoy pounded the rock for the final few first downs to run the clock out on his way to a career-high 149 yards. In Week 15, the Cowboys will finally face an offense that is considered average at best -- the Redskins -- after enduring a stretch of explosive attacks from the Saints, Colts and Eagles in the last three weeks. Look for the Cowboys DST -- who held them to just 13 points and 250 yards in Week 1 -- to be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit for the matchup.
News: The Cowboys defense has seemed over-matched heading into each of its last two games, against the Saints and Colts, respectively. They forced two turnovers and two sacks against New Orleans, and picked-off Colts QB Peyton Manning four times last week and returned two for touchdowns. The turnovers were nice, but the Dallas defense allowed a combined 65 points in the process. It gets no easier in Week 14, as QB Michael Vick and the Eagles come to town. Vick has accounted for 21 TDs in just nine games. WRs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin have combined for 13 TDs and RB LeSean McCoy has added nine scores to go along with more than 1,300 yards from scrimmage. Philadelphia is the only NFL offense to average more than 400 yards per game.
Analysis: With the gaudy point and yardage totals the Cowboys defense has given up this season, the recent string of turnovers they have been able to create has been the only bail-out from an otherwise woeful Fantasy DST. We don't see the 'Boys intercepting Vick four times or scoring a couple of TDs in the return game as they did against Indianapolis last week. Utilize alternatives in Fantasy play that have a better shot than the Cowboys DST at stifling an offense. The Eagles are just too explosive.
News: The Cowboys defense took advantage of a struggling Peyton Manning at Indianapolis in Week 13, recording four interceptions and returning two for touchdowns. DB Orlando Scandrick took one 40 yards for the score in the second quarter, and LB Sean Lee took one of his two 31 yards to paydirt in the third. The Cowboys allowed 35 points on 405 yards, however.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST didn't have a shutdown performance, but defensive touchdowns are always huge in Fantasy. And considering the Cowboys were facing a potent offensive team, you have to be happy with the four interceptions. The Cowboys DST has been too unreliable all year for you to suddenly trust it now, especially since it has a tough matchup Week 14 against the Eagles, but it clearly still has some playmakers.
News: The Cowboys defense, which has shown improvement since Jason Garrett took over as head coach, recording five sacks and four interceptions in three games, will visit a Colts team in Week 13 that has lost three of four with a quarterback in Peyton Manning that has equaled a career-worst two-game stretch with seven interceptions. Still, the Cowboys will have their work cut out for them. They've allowed 400 yards or more in three of their last four games, and the Colts give up only 7.8 Fantasy points to opposing defenses, ninth-best in the NFL.
Analysis: The Colts have little running game to speak of with Joseph Addai nursing a neck injury, which will allow the Cowboys to key in on Manning and the passing game. They may be able to force a mistake or two out of Manning, but the veteran is considered the best quarterback in football for a reason. He should be able to keep the ball moving and put the Colts on the scoreboard. The Cowboys DST has some big-play ability, but now clearly isn't the time to take a chance on it in Fantasy.
News: The Cowboys DST had two turnovers against the Saints in Thursday night's 30-27 loss in Week 12 on Thanksgiving Day. Dallas had an interception and a fumble recovery to go with two sacks. On special teams, the Cowboys had two kickoff returns from Dez Bryant for 60 yards and three kickoff returns from Bryan McCann for 41 yards. Bryant also had one punt return for 13 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST remains a No. 2 Fantasy option in the majority of leagues and is not worth using in Week 13 at the Colts. Even with the two turnovers against the Saints offense, facing the Colts in Indianapolis is a daunting task.
News: The punt was bouncing into the end zone and Detroit's John Wendling played it perfectly, leaping just before the goal line and tapping the ball toward the field. For the fourth time this game, the Cowboys were about to be pinned inside their 5-yard line. Only this time, the ball took a waist-high hop, right into the hands of Dallas' Bryan McCann. And the speedster knew exactly what to do with it. "I saw the edge," he said, "and kept running." McCann returned the batted punt 97 yards for a touchdown, putting the Cowboys ahead and sparking them to a 35-19 victory Sunday in Week 11. On top of the touchdown, the Cowboys DST had one interception from Terence Newman, one fumble recovery from Jason Hatcher and three sacks.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option. They have a tough matchup in Week 12 against New Orleans on Thanksgiving Day and might not be worth using in the majority of leagues.
News: The Cowboys DST is coming off its best game of the season in Week 10 at the Giants, and they will look to make it two games in a row with outstanding production in Week 11 against Detroit. The Cowboys had 22 Fantasy points against the Giants behind a touchdown and two interceptions. The Cowboys DST has three touchdowns on the year, and they will look to make it four against the Lions.
Analysis: We like the Cowboys DST as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option. Look for them to play well in Week 11, and we would consider starting them in the majority of formats.
News: The Dallas secondary lost Mike Jenkins with a neck injury in Week 10, and had to deal with some other bumps and bruises along the way too. But when push came to shove, the Cowboys defense got the job done against the Giants in Week 10. DB Bryan McCanns 101-yard interception return for a touchdown is the longest in team history. He got playing time because of Jenkins' injury. The team seemed to play inspired under interim head coach Jason Garrett. They intercepted Eli Manning twice, but didn't get a sack in the game. Dallas won the game 33-20, giving them their second win of the season and Garrett his first as head coach. Coach (Paul) Pasqualoni did an outstanding job this week getting everybody up to speed, Garrett said of his defensive coordinator. The Cowboys defense forced three turnovers Sunday, the first game without Wade Phillips calling the shots on defense.
Analysis: Dallas is a talented team and they finally showed glimpses of greatness in Week 10. They have seven interceptions on the year and 17 sacks. While they aren't the best DST option out there, Dallas did play better and have a favorable matchup in Week 11 -- Detroit. The Lions have trouble protecting their quarterback, so the Cowboys could have a field day.
News: With Wade Phillips gone from the Dallas sidelines, the defensive players are getting used to their new head coach -- Jason Garrett. It was better. A different tempo -- something weve got to get used to. There was a lot of energy," DB Mike Jenkins said of the atmosphere of the first practice. "I think our main thing right now is to believe in Jason and his theory. The practice also saw the addition of DB Terence Newman as he missed the last two weeks with a rib injury. Dallas gives up 214.4 passing yards and 123.9 yards on the ground per game and face one of the better teams in the NFL right now -- the New York Giants in Week 10.
Analysis: The Cowboys have talent on both sides of the ball -- especially on defense, but have managed just five interceptions and 17 sacks so far this season. Going up against a team that beat you 35-41 in Week 7 and racked up almost 500 yards of offense against you doesn't give Fantasy owners too much hope. Dallas' DST should be considered a No. 2 option for Week 10 or bye-week replacement.
News: Wade Phillips was fired Monday as coach of the Dallas Cowboys, with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett promoted to take his place. Phillips was the architect and playcaller of the Cowboys defense, which had only 17 sacks, five interceptions and no touchdowns through eight games. Paul Pasqualoni has been moved to defensive coordinator, a job he had in Miami for the 2008 and 2009 seasons before getting fired.
Analysis: Typically we'd be optimistic about a defense getting a fresh coordinator, but Pasqualoni has a lot to prove to not just football viewers but to his players. We don't see the Dallas defense playing strong and can't recommend them as a startable option at the high-powered Giants in Week 10.
News: The Cowboys defense got absolutely gashed by the Packers in Week 9 to the tune of 45 points and 415 yards of offense. QB Aaron Rodgers threw for three easy-touchdowns against Dallas, and RB Brandon Jackson, who caught one TD from Rodgers, also ran for a TD on the night. The Cowboys defense did manage to sack Rodgers once and block a field goal, but did not create a turnover. The Cowboys special teams unit fumbled two returns that the Packers recovered. The first one was the result of KR Bryan McCann getting stripped by Jarrett Bush, recovered by Nick Collins for a 26-yard TD. "I felt like we were on the field for a very long time," LB Keith Brooking said. "That's not just on the offense. We couldn't get off the field."
Analysis: There was not much to say about the Cowboys DST units, other than to re-iterate how badly they competed on Sunday night. Packers WRs were beating Dallas DBs one-on-one, the Cowboy secondary also missed several tackles in the game. It gets no easier for Dallas in Week 10 against the Giants, who put up 41 points on the 'Boys in Week 7. In the shootout, New York put up nearly 500 yards of offense. The Cowboys DST should not be considered in that matchup. Dez Bryant did return a punt for a touchdown in the Week 7 game and the Cowboys intercepted Eli Manniing three times early on.
News: The Cowboys DST is coming off two of its worst performances of the year in their last two games against the Giants and Jaguars. They allowed a combined 76 points in the two games. In Week 9, they travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers, who average scoring 22 points per game. QB Aaron Rodgers is fifth in the NFL in passing yards (2,011) despite not having Jermichael Finley for the last several weeks. The Packers will take the field without Donald Driver as well, but they remain healthy otherwise on the offensive end. Dallas ranks 10th against the pass, but QBs Eli Manning and David Garrard have shredded Dallas in their last two outings.
Analysis: The Cowboys are ailing in the secondary, but it looks like their top DBs Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman are on track to play on Sunday night. Still, it will take a supreme effort to slow down the Packers in Green Bay. They are coming off of a dismal performance themselves in a win over the Jets, in which they failed to reach the end zone. The two teams met in 2009, when the Packers racked up just 283 yards against The Cowboys, but Green Bay pulled out the victory. Rodgers had two touchdowns (one rush) and 189 yards through the air. The odds seemed too stacked against the 'Boys on Sunday night, we see them as a fill-in defense for the bye week of your top Fantasy DST's bye.
News: The Cowboys DST is probably feeling a little embarrassed after the Week 8 game at home against lowly Jacksonville. After the game, Dallas is feeling much more lowly after losing to the Jaguars 35-17. The Cowboys could not avoid turning the ball over while the Cowboys DST could not stop QB David Garrard, who had a career-high game. Garrard threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another and the Jaguars racked up 387 yards of total offense in the game. The Cowboys DST forced just one turnover in the game as Garrard lost a fumble. Dallas sacked Garrard three times.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has allowed 884 yards of offense and 76 points in the last two games against the Giants and Jaguars. Jacksonville had not been known as an offensive juggernaut prior to facing the Cowboys, plus Garrard was playing in his first game back from a concussion. The Cowboys DST did not have a defensive or special teams touchdown to save it this week and should be embarrassed after what Jacksonville was able to do on the road against them. Facing the Packers in Green Bay Week 9, the Cowboys DST is not a recommended Fantasy option.
News: One thing should be painfully certain heading into the Week 8 game against Jacksonville, the Cowboys DST will not give up 41 points and 497 yards of offense to the Jaguars. The defense will need to step up after the loss of QB Tony Romo and the Jaguars have been terrible on offense this season. That is a very good recipe for huge week for the Cowboys DST.
Analysis: Dallas picked Eli Manning three times in the Week 7 game on Monday night and Dez Bryant has become a dream in the return game. The sacks continue to come as well and the Cowboys DST have been a solid unit all season. The Jaguars are allowing big Fantasy points to opposing DSTs and Week 8 should be no different. The Cowboys DST might even be the No. 1 overall Fantasy option for Week 8, so feel free starting them in all leagues.
News: What the Cowboys DST lacked in the ability to stop the New York Giants on Monday night in Week 7, they very much made up for in other areas. Despite losing the game 41-35 and giving up 497 yards of total offense, the Cowboys DST still had an excellent performance against the Giants for Fantasy owners. The highlight of the DSTs performance came in the second quarter when Dez Bryant took a punt return 93 yards for a return touchdown. The Cowboys DST forced the Giants into five turnovers, including three Eli Manning interceptions. Both New York running backs lost fumbles and Manning was stripped another time that was picked back up by the Giants.
Analysis: Looking at the scoreboard, Fantasy owners probably believed the Cowboys DST stunk up the place in the Monday night game. Upon further examination, however, the unit scored well with so many turnovers forced and the return TD. They didn't perform well in limiting yards and points, though, and also just had one sack of Manning. The Cowboys DST was far more opportune on Monday than it has been all season so this game was a little different than what we've come to expect. Still, each week we've gotten consistent production and that should continue in Week 8 against Jacksonville. The Cowboys DST is a unit worth starting next week.
News: The Cowboys defense has done a solid job this season but will face a tough offense with the Giants coming to town for Week 7. Dallas has the second best passing defense in the league and ranks seventh against the run. They will be put to the test as New York enters Monday night with the fifth-best rushing attack in the NFL, averaging just over 136 yards per game.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has given up an average of 22 points per game this season while the Giants are scoring are the same rate. Dallas' defense has picked up the slack while their offense has struggled this year but can only do so much when they are forced to be on the field for long periods of time. New York won both of the meetings between the division foes last season while the Cowboys gave up over 30 points in both matchups. Fantasy owners should consider the Cowboys DST as a low-end No.1 option for Week 7.
News: The Cowboys DST allowed 24 points on just 188 total net yards in Week 6 against the Vikings. The unit held the Vikings to an average of 3.8 yards per play and only allowed 95 yards rushing in the 24-21 loss. They sacked Brett Favre three times and forced a fumble. The unit surrendered 17 second half points, but seven of those came on a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST actually played well on Sunday, but were unable to make a big stop when they needed too. Still, they held Brett Favre to 118 yards passing and Adrian Peterson to just 74 Yards rushing. While the Cowboys are 1-4 most of their problems can be attributed to the offensive side of the ball. That doesn't mean the defense doesn't have room for improvement especially in the penalty department. The Cowboys DST faces another tough matchup in Week 7 against the Giants. New York has plenty of weapons on offense and can put points on the board in a hurry. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 7.
News: The Cowboys DST will have their hands full trying to slow down Adrian Peterson and the Vikings in Week 6. The Cowboys are ranked 12th in rushing defense (102.2 ypg) and 27th in scoring among Fantasy DST units so far this season. However, the Vikings could be without QB Brett Favre, who has been bothered by tendinitis in his throwing elbow. The Vikings are 25th in total offense, averaging 330 yards per game.
Analysis: Dallas has underperformed on the defensive side of the ball this season, despite boasting the leagues fourth best defense. They rank seventh in sacks and created seven turnovers, but have an average of 21.8 point per game over their first four contests. Even if the Vikings are without Farve on Sunday, Minnesota still boats Peterson, Randy Moss and Percy Harvin, who can put up big numbers against any defense. Consider the unit a low-end DST heading into Week 6.

News: The Cowboys DST allowed 34 points on 321 total yards in Week 5 to the Titans. The unit held the Titans to 163 yards net passing, but allowed Tennessee to rush for 158 yards on the ground. The Cowboys defense recorded three sacks and were able to get consistent pressure on Vince Young, but allowed 17 second half points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys DST were unable to turnover the Titans in the 34-27 loss.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST didn't play horrible on Sunday, but they were far from good. The unit came in ranked eighth in the NFL in rush defense (80.2 ypg), but were carved up on the ground. The unit had not surrendered a rushing touchdown all season until Chris Johnson scored two in the loss. They only gave up 163 yards net passing, but allowed Young to throw two touchdown passes. They also committed two very costly pass interference infractions that allowed the Titans to extend drives. The Cosboys defense will have another tough task trying to slow down Adrian Peterson in week 6 when the team travels to Minnesota. Consider the Cowboys DST low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into Week 6.
News: Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he is concerned about the running ability of quarterback Vince Young as well as Titans running back Chris Johnson in Week 5. "Well, a quarterback that runs with it gives you a different (dimension)," Phillips told The Sports Xchange. "McNabb was like that. You have to be aware that they can run the football. Vince probably runs a little more at this point of his career than McNabb does at this point of his career, but a guy that can make a first down with his feet can give you problems. You can have everything covered, then all of the sudden, they run for the first down. That gives the offense an extra series for them. We have to be aware of that." Although, it seems LB DeMarcus Ware is a little more concerned about Johnson. "We're going to have to get our track shoes on," he said. "But these are the kind of games we like. We love when we face a team that just likes to run it."
Analysis: The proof is in the pudding with Dallas. It is eighth in the NFL in rush defense (80.2 ypg) and have not allowed a rushing touchdown. Johnson has actually struggled against 3-4 defenses in 2010, but Dallas is not taking that for granted. "I don't know that he has struggled, and I don't think it is particularly the 3-4," Phillips said. "He is liable to go all the way on any defense. It doesn't matter what you're lined up in." The Titans have scored 20 or more points in three of four games this season, but Dallas has also allowed 20 or less points in two of three games. It's an intriguing enough of a matchup that you can consider the Cowboys DST a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 5.
News: The Cowboys DST played well in Sunday's game at Houston in Week 3. Dallas held the Texans to 13 points with four sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. DeMarcus Ware did most of the damage with three sacks, and Mike Jenkins and Danny McCray each had the interceptions. Terence Newman recovered the fumble. On special teams, Dez Bryant had one punt return for 12 yards, and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah had three kickoff returns for 63 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST played surprisingly well since the Texans offense was playing at a high level coming into this game. Dallas has a bye in Week 4 before facing the Titans in Week 5, and the Cowboys DST should be considered a No. 1 option in that matchup. Dallas will be challenged by Chris Johnson in that game, and Arian Foster ran for 106 yards in this matchup. The Cowboys hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher since the 2008 season, but they will focus on stopping Johnson in Week 5.
News: The Cowboys DST has a lot on their plate Week 3 at Houston. The Texans sport the NFL's best offense (440.5 yards per game) and they actually lead the league in rushing (315 yards in two games). Not only does Dallas have to worry about containing WR Andre Johnson (191 yards receiving and one touchdown), they also have to contain NFL rushing leader, RB Arian Foster. The Texans, as a balanced offense, also lead the league in points per game, averaging 32. "It's time to call 9-1-1. It's an emergency," coach Wade Phillips told the team's official website about the Cowboys sense of urgency for Week 3.
Analysis: Containing Foster is a strength for Dallas' defense. They have allowed just 63.5 yards per game over the first two contests. However, the team has yet to force a turnover and Bears QB Jay Cutler racked up 277 yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys in Week 2. The only bright spot for the DST against Chicago was rookie WR Dez Bryant's 62 yard punt return for a touchdown. Against the NFL's best offense in Week 3, consider the Dallas DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Bears could not run the ball on the Cowboys DST in Week 2. Unfortunately for Dallas, they weren't really trying to as they racked up 308 yards of offense, 270 of which coming through the air. Dallas fell to the Bears 27-20 in the Week 2 but did record a special teams touchdown. Dez Bryant took a punt in the first quarter 62 yards to pay dirt to make the score 7-3 Dallas at the time. Dallas managed one sack of Cutler and did not force a turnover in the game.
Analysis: The Dallas defense was dismal in Week 2 after limiting the Redskins in the opening game. The Cowboys are now 0-2 to begin the year and cannot be very happy about it. The one saving grace was the Bryant punt-return touchdown in the first quarter. The Cowboys DST will match up against the Texans in Houston Week 3. The Texans are another high-scoring team but Dallas should be able to get a few turnovers in that one. We feel they may have a bounce-back performance and can be considered a viable starting unit for the next scoring period.
News: The Dallas DST did not give up much yardage or an offensive touchdown to the Redskins in Week 1 but the Cowboys still managed to lose the game. Facing Chicago at home Week 2, a Mike Martz offense, Dallas could have a tougher matchup yet. They managed just one sack of Donovan McNabb and did not force a Washington turnover. Chicago QB Jay Cutler, who faced the Lions' defense Week 1, fared well but was sacked four times with an interception. The Cowboys should be able to get at Cutler even more frequently than did the Bears.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST was a disappointment Week 1 but this is a top Fantasy unit, do not kid yourself. Dallas does not want to start the season with two losses and will be firing on all cylinders against the Bears. Chicago is a much better offense this season but should still make some mistakes. We fully expect the Dallas DST to capitalize and believe them to easily be worth using in Fantasy as a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware was not on the field for practice Wednesday, the club's first workout since he suffered a neck injury. Ware said about an hour before practice that he felt fine and called the injury a tweak. He was hurt with less than 5 minutes left in the opening loss against Washington and did not return. He said club officials "took the right precautionary measures and everything is OK."
Analysis: Ware is a huge part of what the Cowboys do on defense, so if he somehow doesn't play on Sunday the unit would suffer. But we expect him to make it at this point, and he and the Cowboys should harass QB Jay Cutler and the Bears quite a bit in Week 2. Thus, consider them a starting option for the upcoming week.
News: The Cowboys had a dominant defensive performance in a losing effort Week 1 at Washington, allowing 13 points on only 250 yards. They weren't able to pressure QB Donovan McNabb the way they had in the past, though, recording only one sack. They didn't record any turnovers.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST was a good source of sacks last season but sometimes struggled in other areas. Sunday's game was a completely different story. The Cowboys DST could get back to its roots against the Bears in Week 2 facing a Mike Martz offense known for giving up sacks and turnovers. Keep it active as a No. 1 Fantasy unit even though it's likely to give up a bit more yardage against the pass-heavy offense.
News: The Cowboys DST, which disappointed as only the 18th-ranked Fantasy unit last season, had a much better showing this preseason, allowing more than 20 points only once in five contests and ranking ninth in total defense with 299.8 yards per game. And if that's not enticing enough, the Cowboys visit a Redskins team in Week 1 that scored only six points in two games against them last year. Granted, this is a completely different Redskins offense -- one that features Donovan McNabb under center instead of Jason Campbell -- but McNabb didn't have much success against the Cowboys last year either, leading his team to just 16 points in two games against them.
Analysis: McNabb, who will be playing on an ankle that's less than 100 percent, hasn't had a sack-free game vs. Dallas since 2001. In the past three seasons, covering seven games, McNabb has been sacked 23 times vs. the Cowboys. Their pass rush plus his penchant for trying to make plays downfield have led to the sacks, and his decreased mobility should only exacerbate the trend in Week 1. In other words, the Cowboys DST should be in for a big performance and will likely rank as a No. 1 Fantasy unit all season. It rated well in real life last year, so its so-so Fantasy production was likely an aberration.
News: For the first time in the preseason, the Cowboys defense allowed more than 20 points in a game during Saturday's 23-7 loss to the Texans. The first-string defense did hold Houston to just one touchdown and 13 points in the first half. Dallas is 11th in the preseason in total defense (292.8 ypg) and seventh in scoring defense (15.2 ppg).
Analysis: While the Dallas offense gets most of the attention, the Cowboys defense can hold their own. Playing in a 3-4 scheme, the Cowboys finished the 2009 season ninth in total defense (315.9 ypg) and second in scoring defense (15.6 ppg). Dallas also totaled 42 sacks last season, which is good for a team that doesn't blitz a lot according to their head coach. One area of improvement is turnovers since Dallas forced just 21 last season. But with star players like DeMarcus Ware, Keith Brooking and Terrance Newman leading the defense, Dallas is in good hands. Consider the Cowboys a top five DST option on Draft Day.
News: Cowboys DE Marcus Spears suffered a sprained MCL in his knee during Thursday's practice and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. According to the Dallas Morning News, it is a Grade-2 tear of the ligament but he will not need surgery. Spears is considered questionable for the season opener at Washington.
Analysis: Spears does his part for the Cowboys' defense by taking on blockers, allowing Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware to get after the quarterback and Bradie James and Keith Brooking to get after running backs. If Spears isn't at 100 percent for most of the year it could lead to problems for the Cowboys run defense. If the Cowboys take it easy with him, though, then he should be OK, and it looks like they're going to do that. Continue to view Dallas DST as a solid No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Cowboys added some players on defense in the NFL Draft. Dallas drafted LB Sean Lee in Round 2, S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah in Round 4, CB Jamar Wall in Round 6 and DL Sean Lissemore in Round 7.
Analysis: Lee has the chance to play right away, and he could make the biggest difference for the Cowboys DST. Owusu-Ansah also has potential, but he is dealing with a shoulder injury coming into the year. The Cowboys DST should be considered a No. 1 option coming into the season based on how they played in 2009.
News: Wade Phillips is sticking around as coach of the Cowboys for two more years. Dallas won the NFC East for the second time in Phillips' three seasons and also won its first playoff game since 1996 and the first in Phillips' head coaching career. The Cowboys are 34-17 over his three seasons in charge -- only three NFL teams have won more games in that span.
Analysis: The Cowboys clinched their second NFC East title in three seasons under Phillips and won a playoff game for the first time since the 1996 season. The defense didn't allow a 100-yard rusher all season long and finished strong with 42 sacks (though with just 11 interceptions). Expect Phillips to stay and thus the Cowboys to be a No. 1 Fantasy DST in 2010, worth a late-round pick.
News: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is giving every indication that he is picking up coach Wade Phillips' contract option for the 2010 season, and likely keeping him longer. Jones said he would answer questions about Phillips' future at a season wrap-up news conference later in the week with "both him and me there." The Cowboys have not yet scheduled that news conference.
News: Dallas LB DeMarcus Ware missed practice Thursday because of a sore back. The problem isn't considered serious and Ware is expected to play in Saturday night's home playoff game against Philadelphia. Ware, who has 11 sacks, has played with a fracture in his wrist for much of the season. After straining his neck in a headfirst collision against San Diego, he didn't miss a game and the following week had two sacks, forcing fumbles on both.
Analysis: Look for Ware to play in the Saturday's game against Dallas, and he should be fine heading into 2010 barring any injuries. When healthy, Ware is a No. 1 LB in IDP leagues, and his playmaking is a reason why the Cowboys DST is a starting option in most Fantasy leagues.
News: For an entire year, the Dallas Cowboys have had to deal with the fallout from a crushing, season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now it is the Eagles' turn. Tony Romo threw a pair of early touchdown passes and the defense took over from there, carrying Dallas to a 24-0 victory over Philadelphia in Week 17. Dallas posted consecutive shutouts for the first time in team history after also blanking the Redskins in Week 16. Dallas held Philadelphia to 228 yards. The Cowboys had four sacks and forced one turnover. Philadelphia's best drive reached the Dallas 14 in the second quarter, then Donovan McNabb fumbled a low snap from new center Nick Cole. The Eagles never got anything going in the second half. Coach Andy Reid let David Akers try a 53-yard field goal and he missed.
Analysis: Romo finished thw season with the most attempts, completions and yards passing ever by a Cowboys quarterback. His nine interceptions are by far the fewest of his career. Dallas also set a record for single-season yards. Yet it's the defense -- which is run by coach Wade Phillips -- that is carrying this team. Over the last four games, the Cowboys faced the NFL's three highest-scoring offenses and held all of them to their fewest points of the season. These back-to-back shutouts are quite the capper. It hasn't been done in the NFL since Tennessee did it in 2000, and it's only the third time in 50 seasons that Dallas has posted two shutouts in year. "There's no secret," linebacker Keith Brooking said. "We have a great coaching staff on our defense, we have players that really care about what they're doing. ... They believe in the system and accepted their roles. As long as we continue to do that, I really like our chances." If the Dallas can keep a lot of their same components together in 2010, the Cowboys DST will be a No. 1 option on Draft Day.
News: In the Cowboys' Week 16 win at the Redskins, the DST held their opponent scoreless and recorded three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The Cowboys find themselves in a meaningful Week 17 game against the Eagles at home -- the winner will be the NFC East division winner and land a home game in the playoffs (potentially against the loser of the game). With the Eagles bringing their high-octane offense to Cowboys Stadium, you can probably find a safer DST option for use in Week 17.
News: The Cowboys DST held New Orleans to 17 points and 336 yards in a Week 15 win. Dallas recorded one interception, two fumble recoveries and four sacks.
Analysis: The Dallas DST had done a whole lot of nothing in the previous two weeks before they came out with this big performance on Saturday night. Only starting in 29 percent of leagues, the unit didn't benefit a whole lot of Fantasy owners, but they could be worth a shot in deeper leagues for Week 16 at Washington.
News: Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware (wrist, neck) was not named among the inactives for Week 15 at New Orleans.
Analysis: Ware leads the Cowboys in sacks, a category he led the NFL in last season with 20. He'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays at New Orleans, so keep him active in all IDP leagues.
News: The Cowboys have listed linebacker DeMarcus Ware as questionable for Saturday night's game against undefeated New Orleans. Ware is recovering from a strained neck sustained in a headfirst collision during Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers. Ware, who has started all 77 of his regular-season games since being the 11th overall pick in 2005, has said he wants to play against the Saints. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker attended meetings and participate in walkthrough sessions this week.
Analysis: Ware is a huge part of the Cowboys DST, which isn't a strong Fantasy option to begin with because of their matchup at the Saints. But if Ware is out you can definitely pass on them for another option off waivers (the Texans look real good). Consider all options before going with the Cowboys DST in Week 15.
News: Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware has returned to practice. Ware went through the stretching routine Thursday with the rest of the team. Ware then went to the adjacent field to work alone with a trainer when the rest of the players, who were not in pads, broke for team drills. Ware is recovering from a strained neck sustained in a scary hit last Sunday. Ware has said he wants to play Saturday night against undefeated New Orleans. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker has never missed a game, starting all 77 since he was the 11th overall pick in 2005.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Ware's status heading into Saturday's game. When healthy, he is a must-start option in IDP leagues. If Ware is able to return that will help the Cowboys DST, but they should be considered a No. 2 option at the Saints.
News: Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware says he's feeling good, yet his status for Saturday's night's game in New Orleans is still uncertain. Ware has a sprained neck and wasn't on the field for the first portion of practice Wednesday. Ware said things were "going good" and was scheduled to have X-rays, an MRI exam and other tests to see if the swelling had gone and make sure there were no problems. Ware hurt his neck Sunday when he slammed headfirst into a San Diego lineman. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and hospitalized briefly before being released that night.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST isn't a strong Fantasy option to begin with because of their matchup at the Saints, but if Ware is out you can definitely pass on them for another option off waivers (the Texans look good). Consider all options before going with the Cowboys DST in Week 15.
News: Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware could play Saturday night, an encouraging sign after a scary headfirst collision that left him sprawled on the field for several anxious minutes. After Ware got hurt in the fourth quarter of a 20-17 loss Sunday against San Diego, the Cowboys on Monday described Ware's injury as a strained muscle in his neck. Ware was taken off the field strapped to a stretcher and went to the hospital for further evaluation before being released several hours later. "He's actually a lot better today," coach Wade Phillips said Monday. "He's really in a day-to-day situation as far as where he's going to be, as far as being able to play. He took quite a hit but has really bounced back strong. That's encouraging for him and us."
Analysis: That's great news for the Cowboys DST, but they'll surely have some trouble in Week 15 at the Saints on Saturday night. Consider other options before going with the DST unit this week.
News:Philip Rivers bailed the Chargers out of trouble with several third-down throws and hit Antonio Gates for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, lifting San Diego to a 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14. To add injury to insult, DeMarcus Ware sprained his neck and was taken off the field on a cart early in the fourth quarter. Ware flashed a 'W' with his fingers as his stretcher approached the ambulance. The Chargers totaled 341 yards, including 268 through the air. Dallas had one interception and one sack.
Analysis: Ware was moving around all the time while he was being loaded onto the stretcher, so it seems he was carted off as a precaution. He might not be lost for the season and that is definitely good news for the Cowboys. The Dallas defense hasn't been a standout unit all season and it has been tough at times to start the Cowboys DST. It could be a challenge again in Week 15 as they travel to New Orleans. With or without Ware, the Cowboys DST is a tough Fantasy start since New Orleans is a top offense.
News: The Cowboys allowed 31 points and 337 yards of offense in Week 13 at the N.Y. Giants. They forced two turnovers in the game and had one sack.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense did not do a bad job of keeping the Giants' offense in check in Week 13, but a punt return made the final score look worse than things actually were. The Giants did not do much on the ground and -- outside of a big 74-yard pass-and-catch from Eli Manning to Brandon Jacobs -- they did not have a big game through the air either. The Cowboys defense is a unit most owners tend to start based on matchups, which makes them a tad bit risky in Week 14 against a tough Chargers offense.
News: The Cowboys DST held the Raiders to seven points Thursday and also got three sacks and a fumble recovery. Patrick Crayton had four kickoff returns for 36 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST does a good job in creating sacks and turnovers. Consider the Cowboys a No. 1 DST in Week 13 at the Giants.
News: There wasn't much offensive firepower in Dallas on Sunday of Week 11. The Cowboys pulled out the win on a late touchdown drive and the defense secured it with an interception of Jason Campbell on Washington's last-ditch effort. Dallas won the game 7-6 and limited Washington to 324 yards of offense with no touchdowns. The Cowboys DST could only manage the one turnover, however, and had one sack to go with it.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST kept Washington out of the end zone but anyone can do that these days. They also allowed too many yards and didn't do much else that would make Fantasy owners happy. That should be a different story on Thanksgiving of Week 12, however. Dallas hosts Oakland in a Turkey Day showdown and should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy option for that game.
News: The Cowboys will be without safety Ken Hamlin after Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Hamlin's high-ankle sprain will sideline him 3-4 weeks. Cornerback Mike Jenkins severely bruised an arm muscle against the Packers but is expected to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST remains too good of an option to sit against a suspect Washington offense. Start them in Week 11.
News: The Cowboys had a strong defensive performance in a loss at Green Bay in Week 10, allowing only 17 points on 283 yards. They also recorded four sacks.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST sometimes struggles against good offenses, but not this week. It has been on a roll lately, recording three sacks or more in each of its last seven games. With a good matchup Week 11 against the Redskins, it's clearly a No. 1 Fantasy unit.
News: The Cowboys DST did a good job Sunday of getting pressure on Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. Dallas had four sacks and two interceptions against McNabb and only allowed 16 points. Gerald Sensabaugh and Michael Jenkins had the interceptions, and Jay Ratliff (two), Keith Brooking and Victor Butler had the sacks. Patrick Crayton, who had two punt returns for touchdowns the past two games, had one return for 7 yards. Felix Jones had five kickoff returns for 105 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is playing at a high level, and hopefully that will continue in Week 10 at Green Bay. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option against the Packers.
News: The Cowboys DST had three sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries Sunday against Seattle in a 38-17 victory. Patrick Crayton also had an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown, and he finished with four punt returns for 126 yards. Felix Jones had three kickoff returns for 45 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST continues to improve each week and should be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 9 at the Eagles.
News: Put a little pressure on a quarterback and a defense can force an incompletion, a sack or an interception. Put a lot of pressure on a quarterback and all kinds of good things can happen. Just look at the Cowboys. After going without a sack the first 10 quarters of the season, the Cowboys have 14 in the last 14 quarters. Turnovers have spiked in that span and so have the wins - three in four games, including two in a row. And after months of stalled negotiations, Jerry Jones this week agreed to give the richest contract in team history to his best applier of pressure, DeMarcus Ware. "When you really break down the film and look at each week, we were hitting the quarterback a lot and causing a lot of havoc in the backfield, we just weren't getting any sacks," linebacker Keith Brooking said Wednesday. "It was like, `Well, we're getting the pressure. The sacks will come as long as we keep doing what we're doing.' You're starting to see that coming to the surface now."
Analysis: The Cowboys led the NFL last season with 59 sacks, so the slow start was surprising. But it's not like they were putting up big sack totals the first six games of last season -- they actually had only one more than they do right now. Now they get to feast on a Seattle offensive line that was skewered by the Cardinals in Week 6. Expect positive results, especially since the Seahawks' run game is pretty non-existent. Consider the Cowboys DST a No. 1 option in Week 8 -- grab them off waivers if you can!
News: The Cowboys turned in a strong defensive performance against the Falcons in Week 7. They allowed 21 points on 298 yards and had four sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. They also got a touchdown on special teams when WR Patrick Crayton returned a punt 73 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST has some playmakers, but it can sometimes give up some points. The Cowboys face the hit-or-miss Seahawks in Week 8, so their DST is a somewhat risky option in Fantasy. If you have few alternatives, though, you can get by with it.
News: In their Week 5 win at Kansas City, Dallas' defense totaled four sacks and they limited the Chiefs' run defense. They continued to struggle against the pass, though, as Matt Cassel threw for over 250 yards with two touchdowns.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST remains a decent option in weeks where they take on suspect offenses. They'll be on bye in Week 6 and will return in Week 7 to take on the Falcons, which should be a challenging matchup for them. Consider other options before going with the Cowboys defense in Week 7.
News: The Cowboys didn't have a standout defensive performance at Denver in Week 4. They allowed 17 points on 337 yards, recording three sacks and recovering one fumble.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST hasn't had many big plays this season and hasn't made a significant Fantasy contribution other than Week 3 against the Panthers. It's worth starting in Week 5 at Kansas City, but it's not looking like the must-start unit it has been in years past.
News: The Dallas Cowboys defense and DST played extremely well in Monday night's 21-7 win over the Carolina Panthers. Carolina scored first on a 25-yard pass play in the 2nd quarter and Nick Folk missed a 1st-quarter field goal but it was all positive after that for Big D in Big D. The Cowboys limited Carolina to just 271 total yards and sacked QB Jake Delhomme three times. Delhomme was intercepted twice in the game, the second coming from Terence Newman and Newman returned the pick 27 yards for a defensive touchdown. As the Panthers attempted a late drive, Delhomme was sacked again and lost the football. Dallas finished forcing three turnovers in the win.
Analysis: Dallas' Mike Jenkins intercepted a pass earlier in the game and that, intriguingly, was the Cowboys' first takeaway of the season. They didn't even get to the quarterback in Week 2's game. The Dallas DST was dismal up until Monday's game. They were awesome Monday. What unit shows up Week 4 at Denver. Well, the Broncos are 3-0 and have been very good thus far this season. Consider the Dallas DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option and hope they can keep rolling in Week 4.
News: Zip sacks and no turnovers are a big and unprecedented concern for the Dallas Cowboys. "We've got to reinvent some stuff, play a little bit better, get some pressure," linebacker Bradie James said. "We've been on (quarterbacks), we just haven't been able to sack them." Not even Eli Manning of the New York Giants, who was sacked 12 times in two games against Dallas last season, but last weekend escaped pretty much unscathed in a last-play victory. The same defense that led the NFL with 59 sacks last season and still has individual leader DeMarcus Ware rushing from end is now the only team that heads into Week 3 without a sack or a forced turnover. Maybe that finally changes when the Cowboys (1-1) play Monday night against Carolina (0-2), which has an NFL-high nine turnovers (three fumbles, six interceptions). The Panthers have also given up six sacks, a total surpassed by only four other teams. "It'll be two teams who are licking their wounds trying to get a way to get a win," Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme said.
Analysis: Never since sacks became an official NFL stat in 1982 had the Cowboys gone consecutive games without a sack or a turnover. The last time they had been blanked in both categories even in a single game was nearly five years ago, in November 2004. Making that even more confusing is that coach Wade Phillips, whose strength is defense, added the role of coordinator this season. There were only six games in the previous 27 seasons he was head coach or coordinator that his team didn't have a sack or a takeaway, and 1994 was the last time one of his teams went consecutive games without sacking a quarterback. "If you're aggressive, like we are, things will turn out fine. We're working at it," Phillips said. "The most important thing is winning the game, whether you get 10 turnovers or none." Mike Jenkins, who had the pick that was taken away in Tampa Bay, gets his turn as the starting cornerback Monday instead of Orlando Scandrick, who had a poor performance and was repeatedly beaten by the Giants. The Cowboys plan to keep alternating the second-year cornerbacks as starters so far opposite Terence Newman. The 877 yards allowed by the Cowboys rank 30th in the NFL. That is also a yard more than they gave up in their first three games a year ago. The Cowboys DST is more of a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 3.
News: The Cowboys DST not only gave up over 300 yards passing to Giants QB Eli Manning, but they didn't sack him once or pick him off once. They also didn't force or recover any fumbles, handing in a miserable performance in their first game at brand new Cowboys Stadium.
Analysis: Look for better results in Week 3 when the Cowboys host the Panthers. Surely they'll have a shot at some interceptions then as they welcome Jake Delhomme into their billion-dollar building. Consider them a good option next week in spite of their lousy play against New York.
News: The Cowboys escaped with a 34-21 victory against the Bucs in Week 1, but it wasn't a completely dominating performance by the defense. The Bucs rolled up 450 yards of offense and broke 20 points thanks to a late fourth-quarter touchdown from Kellen Winslow. The Cowboys failed to sack QB Byron Leftwich and forced no turnovers.
Analysis: The Cowboys got a scare on the Bucs' first offensive drive when DL DeMarcus Ware went down with a leg injury, but he came back on the next series and finished out the game. Although Dallas got no sacks or turnovers, they still stopped Tampa Bay from scoring on many drives. The only disappointment was all the yards allowed. Dallas should improve defensively as the season progresses, but they are at best a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Giants.
News: The Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware says he doesn't enter a season with a certain sack total as a goal, although he'd certainly love to be the first guy to officially record a second 20-sack season. "When I think about sack totals, I don't even think about a number," said Ware, one of seven players with a 20-sack season (since sacks became an offical stat in 1982). "I think about how consistent I can be from last season. That's when you're going to have numbers."
Analysis: Ware is tied for the fourth-fastest player to reach 50 career sacks. He admits that he obsesses over the list of the league's sacks leaders each week and that's something that Fantasy owners should love in IDP formats. Ware doesn't know how many it will take, but he's determined to defend his NFL sacks title. How often does he think about that? "All the time," he said. Ware is an elite IDP option because of his high sack output. The Cowboys still appear to be a No. 1 Fantasy defensive unit in 2009 thanks to guys like Ware, Bradie James, Jay Ratliff and Terence Newman. We'd like to see them improve at safety, however.
News: The Dallas Cowboys said Wednesday they are done with CB Adam Jones, releasing him after a 2008 season marred by disappointing play and a six-game suspension for an off-field scuffle. Jones was expected to give the Cowboys a shut-down cornerback on defense and a touchdown threat on special teams. Instead, he had no interceptions and averaged just 4.5 yards per punt return. His release will become official Feb. 9, the first day NFL teams can make waiver requests. Additionally, ESPN is reporting that Jones allegedly ordered a shooting of a man outside an Atlanta strip club in June 2007, an incident that has been kept quiet until now. Jones has had 10 off-field incidents since joining the NFL four years ago.
Analysis: Jones was ineffective for the Cowboys and clearly still hasn't learned how to conduct himself off the field. The Cowboys DST might be better off without Jones, and they have the CB depth to hang with opponents. They still appear to be a No. 1 unit in 2009 thanks to guys like DeMarcus Ware, Bradie James, Jay Ratliff and Terence Newman. We'd like to see them improve at safety.
News: It was not a pleasant Week 17 for the Dallas Cowboys. Not only did they fail to make the playoffs, but they did so in embarrassing fashion as Philadelphia routed Dallas 44-6. The game was tied 3-3 after one quarter before the Eagles scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter. Philadelphia got two defensive scores and racked up 303 yards of offense. Dallas got just one turnover -- fumble recovery -- and one sack.
Analysis: The Cowboys had quite a disappointing stand defensively in the final two weeks as they allowed a combined 77 points to the Eagles and Ravens. It wasn't a great defensive season for Dallas as they had to replace coordinator Brian Stewart midway through the season. Dallas has the talent defensively to be among the elite, so they can be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST heading into 2009.
News: It was a poor way to close out Texas Stadium for the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night in Week 16 against Baltimore. The Cowboys DST gave up 388 yards to the Ravens, including 247 yards rushing -- 159 of which came in the last two series of the game for Baltimore -- from LeRon McClain and Willis McGahee, to lose the home finale, 33-24. What was once a low-scoring game became a high-scoring affair with a combined 34 4th quarter points. The Cowboys forced just one turnover but did pick up five sacks in the game.
Analysis: This is the second time in the last three games for Dallas that they've played well only to falter late in the game. The two late runs by McClain and McGahee were ridiculous and forced the DST to go from having a nice game to scoring little points for Fantasy owners. We think Dallas could bounce back in Week 17 at Philadelphia but label them just a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option after the two recent debacles.
News: The Cowboys DST held the Giants to eight points Sunday with eight sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. Miles Austin had three kickoff returns for 75.6 yards and Patrick Crayton had four punt returns for 24.9 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST should play well again in Week 16 against Baltimore. Continue to start the Cowboys against the Ravens on Saturday night.
News:Deshea Townsend scored on a 26-yard interception return with 1:40 remaining as the Pittsburgh Steelers scored their only two touchdowns 24 seconds apart to rally from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and deal the Dallas Cowboys a potentially damaging loss, winning 20-13 Week 14. Pittsburgh was stopped on a fourth-and-goal play at the Dallas 1 early in the fourth while falling behind 13-3, but came back to tie it at 13 on Ben Roethlisberger's 6-yard pass to Heath Miller with 2:04 remaining. Roethlisberger found Nate Washington three times for 51 yards on a 67-yard drive after the Cowboys (8-5) twice stalled on drives that, if they had scored, probably would have sealed it. Dallas held Pittsburgh to 238 yards, including 168 through the air. They came up with five sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Cowboys looked very sharp Week 14 for the most part and they didn't really lose the game. They put pressure on Roethlisberger and managed to keep the Pittsburgh running game in check. They just couldn't make some key stops down the stretch. The Cowboys DST is usually a viable Fantasy DST, but they remain a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option heading into Week 15 against the Giants.
News: Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware (knee) is active and expected to start Week 14 at Pittsburgh. He was listed as probable on the injury report after practicing in full Friday.
Analysis: Ware hyperextended his knee in a Thanksgiving win over Seattle, but managed three sacks in the game before leaving. He has been one of the NFL's best pass rushers this season and a must-start Fantasy DL when healthy. The Steelers have a suspect offensive line this season, so Ware is licking his chops. The Cowboys DST remains a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option this week.
News: Dallas linebacker DeMarcus Ware was not at practice Monday, the first time the Cowboys were back on the field since Thanksgiving Day, but coach Wade Phillips expects Ware to practice this week and play at Pittsburgh in Week 14. Also, cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones will be eligible to play Sunday after serving his six-game suspension. Jones has already returned to practice, but the Cowboys still have a roster exemption and do not yet have to put him on their 53-man roster. Also, rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins (hamstring) was held out of practice Monday.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST won't be a popular choice when they play at Pittsburgh in Week 14, but with their ability to sack the quarterback and make plays on defense, they're not altogether awful. Consider them a low-end No. 1 option for their next game, and feel free to look at other options before finalizing your lineup.
News: The Cowboys DST had seven sacks against Seattle on Thursday in a 34-9 win. DeMarcus Ware had three sacks before leaving with a sprained knee, Bradie James has two sacks and Tank Johnson and Greg Ellis each recorded one. Terrence Newman also had an interception, and Anthony Henry recovered a fumble. Isaiah Stanback had one kickoff return for 58 yards, and Orlando Scandrick had one kickoff return for 25 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST stepped up as expected. Keep an eye on Ware's knee injury and hope he is OK, and the Cowboys have a tough matchup in Week 14 at Pittsburgh. They won't play at this level next week, so consider them a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: In the Cowboys' 35-22 win vs. the 49ers in Week 12, the DST unit totaled four sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a safety. Better yet, the club held Frank Gore to his worst game statistically since his rookie year. The lowlight? Shaun Hill had his first-ever 300-yard game.
Analysis: This was an excellent performance from the unit, who will see another soft NFC West team come to their place in their next game when the Seahawks fly into town on Thanksgiving Day as part of Week 13 action. Definitely consider the Cowboys DST a No. 1 DST for their next matchup.
News: In the Cowboys' 14-10 win at the Redskins in Week 11, the DST unit totaled three sacks and an interception while holding the Redskins to 228 total net yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST should continue to play well, especially as they get pieces of their secondary back. In Week 12, they host the 49ers, who have put up some points of late but should struggle on the road against the Dallas defense. Consider the Cowboys DST a neat low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys CB Terence Newman (abdomen) is expected back for Week 11 at Washington. He practiced with the team on Monday.
Analysis: Newman's return would certainly help the Cowboys' secondary, which has been sliced and diced in games without him. Still, the Cowboys DST is only worth using if there are no better options available.
News: The Cowboys allowed 319 yards of total offense in Week 9 at the N.Y. Giants, leading to 35 points. They did force three turnovers and had three sacks against Eli Manning, but were torched on the ground, allowing 200 rushing yards. One of the interceptions was returned by Mike Jenkins for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Cowboys have allowed 30-plus points in three of their last four games and they have been beaten up by injuries. They'll get a week to recover when they will be on a bye in Week 10 before returning to face the Redskins at Washington in Week 11.
News: Cowboys cornerback Anthony Henry (thigh), linebacker Anthony Spencer (hamstring) and safety Patrick Watkins (neck) were full participants in practice Friday. All were listed as probable for Week 9 at the Giants, Henry after getting hurt last week and Spencer and Watkins after missing multiple games. Cornerback Terence Newman (sports hernia) is still out.
Analysis: These guys will help Dallas' cause against the Giants, but with the secondary depleted and likely to be tested, along with a good New York offense coming up, there are safer DST options to check out. Consider other options before going with the Cowboys DST in Week 9.
News: The Cowboys DST had two sacks and recovered a fumble Sunday against the Bucs. Miles Austin had two kickoff returns for 38 yards, and Isaiah Stanback had two kickoff returns for 37 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is a low-end unit at this time and should not be used in Week 9 at the Giants. Austin and Stanback are only being used on special teams at this time.
News: Dallas put five-time Pro Bowl safety Roy L. Williams on injured reserve, officially ending his season. Williams re-fractured his right arm in his return to the lineup last Sunday at St. Louis after missing four games because of a broken forearm.
Analysis: Williams has played in just three games this season due to injury and this will be the first time in his career he hasn't played at least 15 games. He was a low-end Fantasy DB, but his loss hurts more for the Cowboys DST. Wade Phillips is once again taking over playcalling duties on defense, so even with the loss of Williams, the Cowboys might be able to turn it around. Treat the Cowboys DST as a possible bye-week Fantasy replacement Week 8 going up against the Bucs.
News: The Cowboys DST was able to sack QB Marc Bulger five times in Week 7 at St. Louis, but did little else to slow down the Rams, especially Steven Jackson (160 rush yards, three touchdowns).
Analysis: The Dallas secondary wasn't shredded as much as their run defense was, but that was because the Rams built a big lead and sat on it with their ground game. The Cowboys are a low-end starting option against the Bucs at home in Week 8.
News: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Cowboys CB Adam "Pacman" Jones for an indefinite period of time without pay for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy. In a letter to Jones, Goodell said the suspension stemmed from "a disturbing pattern of behavior and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL." Goodell will uphold the suspension for at least four games. Directly from an NFL statement, "Jones was involved in an alcohol-related physical altercation at a Dallas hotel on October 8 that resulted in hotel employees calling the police."
Analysis: Jones' impact with the Cowboys defense and special teams wasn't big, but it takes another body off of the roster and depth chart, and their secondary is already slammed by injuries (Terence Newman is out a month). Expect the Cowboys to start giving plenty of points and not being able to respond with Tony Romo out. Even with the matchup at St. Louis in Week 7, be very wary of this DST.
News: The Cowboys defense allowed 30 points to the Cardinals in Week 6 at Arizona, but it gave up only 276 yards. It recorded a sack and an interception and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Cowboys don't exactly have a shutdown defense, but they have enough playmakers that their DST deserves start in Fantasy more often than not. It looks like a great start Week 7 at St. Louis.
News: The Cowboys say that they will not discipline DB Adam "Pacman" Jones after his involvement in an altercation with his bodyguard that was reported Thursday night. Jones practiced Thursday, but was not available to comment following practice. But Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Thursday that Jones will play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals
Analysis: Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a radio interview Thursday that the league was investigating the matter. It is still possible a sanction could come down from the league, but it does not appear to be imminent at this point. Jones remains active for Week 6 should be considered a low-end Fantasy DB -- for now.
News: The Cowboys say that they will not discipline DB Adam "Pacman" Jones after his involvement in an altercation with his bodyguard that was reported Thursday night. Jones practiced Thursday, but was not available to comment following practice.
Analysis: It is still unclear how Tuesday night's incident at a Dallas hotel would affect Jones' NFL status. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a radio interview Thursday that the league was investigating the matter. He said he didn't speak with Jones individually during a previously scheduled meeting with the entire Cowboys team Wednesday night. Jones remains active for Week 6 should be considered a low-end Fantasy DB -- for now.
News: According to reports, the Cowboys are say that they will not discipline DB Adam "Pacman" Jones after his involvement in an altercation with his bodyguard that was reported Thursday night. The Dallas Morning News reports that the league is looking into the incident.
Analysis: Cowboys nose tackle Tank Johnson is downplaying the incident between Jones and his body guard at the Jewel hotel in which the cornerback punched bodyguard Tommy Smith in a hotel bathroom. "I'm comfortable sharing he's a great teammate and been doing his job around here at a high level and we stick with him no matter what," Johnson said. "We haven't rushed to any judgment people are always going to blow things out of proportion it's not really that big of a deal." It's still known if the NFL will take any action against Jones, but the fact that his team won't is a good sign. He remains active for Week 6 should be considered a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Dallas played a tough one against the Bengals on Sunday of Week 5 in Dallas but ultimately prevailed, 31-22. The Cowboys held Carson Palmer and the Bengals to 269 yards of offense and forced two turnovers. Palmer threw an interception picked by Greg Ellis. DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff both came up with sacks of Palmer.
Analysis: It was the first interception on the season for the Cowboys and it came very early in the game on Sunday. The Cowboys head to Arizona in Week 6 and they've been putting a lot of points on the board of late. The Cowboys are normally a No. 1 Fantasy option but could be a little lower than that in Week 6 against the Cardinals.
News: One by one, the Dallas Cowboys defensive backs went through the drill - backpedaling, sliding right toward the sideline, then breaking in on the ball and catching it. Only one thing was missing. The ball. How appropriate. Dallas and Detroit are the only defenses without an interception this season. And the Lions have the excuse of playing one less game. Wait, it gets worse for the Cowboys. Add in the interception-free performance in last season's finale and they're in a five-game slump, matching the worst drought in franchise history, according to Stats, LLC. The only other time it happened was Weeks 2-6 of the 1990 season, Jimmy Johnson's second season.
Analysis: The Cowboys are normally a top-12 Fantasy DST, but this is not a nice distinction to have and their last game, Week 4 against the Redskins, was not one of their better weeks. They stay home in Week 5 against one of the worst teams in the NFL in Cincinnati, however, so continue to start the Cowboys DST in Week 5.
News: Dallas lost their first game Sunday to the Washington Redskins in Big D, 26-24. The Cowboys allowed the Redskins 381 total yards of offense and didn't force them into committing a single turnover. Dallas did reach quarterback Jason Campbell for two sacks -- Chris Canty and Demarcus Ware -- but that was it for the positive attributes for the Cowboys DST on Sunday of Week 4.
Analysis: The Cowboys are normally a top-12 Fantasy DST, but Week 4 was not one of their better weeks. They stay home in Week 5 against one of the worst teams in the NFL in Cincinnati, however, so continue to start the Cowboys DST in Week 5.
News: The Cowboys defense had an admirable showing at the 2-0 Packers in Week 3. It allowed only 16 points on 334 yards, recording five sacks and recovering one fumble.
Analysis: The Cowboys got in a shootout Week 2 against the Eagles, costing their DST some Fantasy points. They still boast a good number of playmakers on defense, though, making them a top-12 Fantasy DST. Consider the Cowboys DST a decent start Week 4 against the Redskins.
News: The showdown between the Eagles and Cowboys Week 2 was expected to be a display of offensive prowess and the two teams didn't disappoint. The Cowboys edged the Eagles 41-37 as both teams' defenses were shredded. The Cowboys allowed 337 yards, including 259 through the air. Dallas did get four sacks and a 98-yard kick return for a touchdown from Felix Jones. However, they didn't intercept a Donovan McNabb pass and just got one turnover (fumble).
Analysis: The Eagles-Cowboys game lived up to the hype offensively, unfortunately, the defenses paid the price. Dallas is a team that doesn't blitz a lot out of the 3-4 formation, but they usually get pressure on the QB. The Cowboys DST remains a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 3 against the Packers.
News: On Monday, Terence Newman said he would be able to play Sunday against Philadelphia. Coach Wade Phillips isn't ready to say that yet, but he is feeling better about the Pro Bowl cornerback's chances, reports the Dallas Morning News. Newman, who did not play in the season opener at Cleveland because of a groin injury, worked with the first team and even intercepted a pass on a deep ball Thursday. He practiced with the scout team in preparation for the Browns. He has been listed on the injury report as having limited participation. Newman suffered the injury July 28. Phillips did not say Newman had a setback but that "he leveled out a little bit, and now he seems to be doing better."
Analysis: If Newman does play against the Eagles consider him a No. 3 DB in IDP leagues. He does, however, improve the Cowboys DST, which is a must start every week at this point.
News: The Browns were one of the highest scoring teams in 2007 and returned all of their top primary offensive weapons in 2008. Well, you couldn't tell that in the opener against Dallas. The Browns scored one touchdown and totaled 205 yards in a 28-10 loss. The Cowboys didn't pick off QB Derek Anderson, but he threw for just 114 yards. Demarcus Ware had a sack for Dallas.
Analysis: The Cowboys don't blitz a lot, but they still manage to get to the QB and make him uncomfortable in the pocket. They added some key players in the offseason, most notably Zach Thomas and Jones, and they already seem to be gelling in Big D. The Cowboys DST is a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Eagles.

News: Adam "Pacman" Jones has been cleared to play for the Dallas Cowboys this season. The cornerback-kick returner was suspended all last season, when he was with the Tennessee Titans, because of an accumulation of arrests and legal problems. He was traded to the Cowboys in April, then allowed by commissioner Roger Goodell to join the team in training camp and in preseason games. Goodell, however, was still waiting to decide whether to let Jones play in the regular season. That news came Thursday, hours before Dallas' final preseason game.
Analysis: Jones is a decent DB in IDP leagues and can be useful as a No. 3 option now that he's reinstated. He is a dynamic return man and should improve the Cowboys DST. Draft the Cowboys with a No. 1 pick with a late-round pick.

News: The Cowboys stopped the Texans on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter Friday to preserve a 23-22 preseason win. The Dallas defense allowed 309 yards, including 114 on the ground. They did not get a sack or force the Texans into a turnover.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense hasn't had a very good preseason, allowing a total of 76 points. The first-unit has done an admirable job, but the backups are struggling. Good thing they will hardly play the backups in-season. Wade Phillips uses a 3-4 defense, but hardly likes to blitz. The Cowboys sacked opponents 46 times in 2007 and were only sacked 25 times. Obviously they are still doing their job on defense although Phillips is not a big fan of blitzing. The Cowboys also had 26 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in 2007. The Cowboys DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy DST despite a slow preseason.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips doesn't like to blitz but he runs a lot of red dogs. "To me blitz is zero coverage when you have five players to cover five receivers," Phillips said. "I like to have a centerfielder, a free safety, and then you're rushing five. To me that's a 'dog' and we do some of that. We'll run zone dogs."

News: Adam "Pacman" Jones is already cradling five footballs in his arms when he moves in position to field another punt. Make it six. Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips watches Jones before a training camp practice, shaking his head in amazement when he turns to onlookers standing behind the end zone. Impressive, but still not Jones' record. "Nah, I've done eight," he said. "It's easy to fit in when you've got one," Jones said. "But when you have two or three of them, it just really helps you focus in a little bit more." After missing all last season with Tennessee while serving an NFL suspension, but expecting to be fully reinstated before the Cowboys open the regular season, the multi-catching drill is another way for Jones to get ready to get back in the game. "When we were at (offseason workouts), I was having a couple of problems just because of my repetition," Jones said. "Well, I feel that I'm back to where I was with catching the punts." The Cowboys were willing to take a chance on Jones, acquiring him in April with an exchange of draft picks, in hopes that he could provide depth at cornerback and help in the return game. "Which one do I like the most? Both," Jones said. "Obviously I love touching the ball. ... You get a little bit more joy when you run back a punt or get a touchdown. For the most part I get the same joy on third-and-4 when my receiver can't catch the ball."
Analysis: There is no doubt that Jones will single-handedly help the Cowboys' DST in a multitude of ways if he gets on the field. Jones is allowed to practice with Dallas, but remains suspended for the regular season. According to a press release by the NFL, "a final determination on his reinstatement for the 2008 regular season will be made by September 1." Right now he has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues, though if fully reinstated he'd be worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy DB if you get credit for special-teams play.
News: The NFL announced that Commissioner Roger Goodell told Cowboys CB Pacman Jones that he could be reinstated to participate in club OTAs, minicamps, training camp and preseason games. However, Jones is still suspended for regular-season play. According to a press release by the NFL, "a final determination on his reinstatement for the 2008 regular season will be made by September 1. Commissioner Goodell told Jones that his continued participation in the NFL depends on demonstrating that he can conduct himself in a lawful and reliable manner. Jones will be expected to continue the personal conduct program established for him by the NFL and the Cowboys and to avoid further adverse involvement with law enforcement."
Analysis: We'll keep tabs on Jones' status throughout the preseason, but expect him to play assuming he keeps his nose clean. The Cowboys DST totaled 46 sacks, 26 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in 2007. They finished the season ranked 13th against the pass and sixth against the run, yielding just 29 offensive touchdowns and finished as a top-10 unit in standard-scoring leagues. With talent like DeMarcus Ware, Roy Williams, Terence Newman, Bradie James, Ken Hamlin, Zach Thomas and now potentially Pacman Jones, the Cowboys DST should continue to be a force in 2008. Figure them to be a No. 1 DST worth a late-round pick in drafts next summer.
News: The Cowboys traded up in Round 1 to land CB Mike Jenkins from South Florida. Jenkins should serve as a nickelback in the Cowboys' secondary right away and eventually develop into a starting outside CB. This is in addition to the team trading for CB Pacman Jones and signing him to a four-year contract extension. The team also traded LB Akin Ayodele to Miami.
Analysis: Dallas' DST was already a strong unit before these moves, but the addition of Jones, and Jenkins, have the potential to put the Cowboys among the elite DST options in 2008. But nothing should be counted on until Jones is reinstated, which is not a sure thing. The Cowboys DST totaled 46 sacks, 26 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in 2007. News: Pending a physical, the Cowboys and Titans have agreed to a deal that will send CB Adam "Pacman" Jones from Tennessee to Dallas in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Jones is currently suspended for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy as he has been arrested six times and has been at or near a dozen police investigations since being drafted by the Titans with the sixth pick overall in the 2005 draft. As part of the trade agreement, if Jones' suspension is not lifted, the Titans will give a 2009 draft choice to Dallas.
Analysis: Dallas' DST was already a strong unit before this trade, but the addition of Jones has the potential to put the Cowboys among the elite DST options in 2008. But nothing should be counted on until Jones is reinstated, which is not a sure thing. The Cowboys DST totaled 46 sacks, 26 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in 2007. News: Linebacker Zach Thomas is headed home to Texas to play for the Dallas Cowboys in the state where he was a high school and college standout. Thomas has reached an agreement on a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cowboys, agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Saturday night. Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowler who missed much of last season because of concussions and migraines, has already taken a physical for the Cowboys. Thomas also visited with the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. All three teams offered similar deals, but Thomas wanted to play in Texas.
Analysis: Adding Thomas, who will be motivated to play well in his home state, will help their already-solid run defense. The Cowboys defense/special teams totaled 46 sacks, 26 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in 2007. They finished the season ranked 13th against the pass and sixth against the run, yielding just 29 offensive touchdowns. They finished as a top-10 unit in standard-scoring leagues. With talent like DeMarcus Ware, Roy Williams, Terence Newman, Bradie James, Ken Hamlin (who is franchised) and now Thomas, the Cowboys DST should continue to be a force in 2008. Figure them to be a No. 1 DST worth a late-round pick in drafts next summer.
News: The Dallas Morning News and Ft. Worth Star-Telegram report that the Cowboys have franchised safety Ken Hamlin. As a result, the team has tendered him an offer for a one-year guaranteed deal worth the average of the five highest-paid players at his position ($4.396 million according to the reports). Hamlin may accept the offer at any time, or he can negotiate with other teams. If another team were to make him a contract offer, the Cowboys would have the right to match the offer or receive two first-round picks as compensation from the other team. The Cowboys would prefer to sign Hamlin to a long-term deal.

News: The Cowboys DST had three sacks and three forced fumbles at Washington in Week 17.
Analysis: Now the Cowboys will rest for a week before taking on either the Buccaneers, Giants or Redskins at home in the Divisional Playoffs. If you're playing Fantasy into the postseason, consider their DST a No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Cowboys defense gave Panthers QB Matt Moore, making just his second career start, plenty of problems Week 16. They limited the youngster to 182 passing yards while netting one interception and five sacks. The Panthers managed 17 points on 216 total yards.
Analysis: All that the Cowboys needed was a kick return for a score or defensive score and it would have been a great Fantasy week. Oh well. The Cowboys DST remains a No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 17 against the Redskins. They will likely be facing Todd Collins since Jason Campbell (knee) is expected to miss the rest of the season.
News: Cowboys safety Roy Williams indeed will be suspended from Saturday night's game at Carolina as punishment for his repeated use of the horse-collar tackle, a maneuver banned a few years ago mainly because of him. Williams appealed the ruling, but the league stuck to its stance even after hearing his side of the story. He'll also be out one week's pay, $35,000. "Commissioner (Roger) Goodell has denied the appeal of the one-game suspension of Roy Williams," the NFL said in a statement. "The horse-collar tackling technique is prohibited because the Competition Committee and the clubs have determined that it presents an unacceptable risk to player safety. Rules that protect and advance player safety must be enforced in a way that will deter violations and prevent injuries from occurring."
Analysis: Williams was flagged for a 15-yard penalty for pulling down Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb from behind during a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. This was his fourth punishment in two seasons since the rule was implemented, the impetus being a similar tackle he made on Terrell Owens when Owens played for the Eagles. With or without Williams, the Cowboys DST is a No. 1 option in Week 16 at Carolina.
News: Cowboys safety Roy Williams appealed on Tuesday the one-game suspension levied because of his third "horse-collar" tackle of the season. Because his case won't be heard until Wednesday, he was able to take part in a walk-through practice in preparation for Saturday's game against Carolina. Williams' status is a more pressing concern because Phillips has to try setting his defense. Dallas (12-2) has clinched a first-round bye, but is still vying for the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. Williams and backup Keith Davis took turns at strong safety during practice. "We just need to get it settled," Phillips said.
Analysis: Williams was flagged for a 15-yard penalty for pulling down Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb from behind during a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. On Monday, the league said he must sit out a game and forfeit a week's salary - $35,000 - because he's a repeat offender. This was his fourth punishment in two seasons since the rule was implemented, the impetus being a similar tackle he made on Terrell Owens when Owens played for the Eagles. With or without Williams, the Cowboys DST is a No. 1 option in Week 16 at Carolina.
News: The Cowboys defense played well in a losing cause Week 15 against the Eagles, allowing 10 points on 315 yards. It also had four sacks. The Cowboys special teams, meanwhile, picked up 81 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST entered the game ranked eighth in the league in yards allowed, and it has a great matchup Week 16 at Carolina. Keep it active in Fantasy.
News: The Cowboys DST had one sack Sunday at Detroit and no turnovers. Miles Austin had thre kickoff returns for a 37.3-yard average, Tony Curtis had one kickoff return for 11 yards and Nate Jones had two kickoff returns for 32 yards.
Analysis: The Dallas DST will bounce back in Week 15 against the Eagles and should be considered a low-end No. 1 option.
News: The Cowboys DST will travel to Ford Field in Detroit to face the Lions' 18th-ranked offense in Week 14.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is ranked eighth in total defense. But they have 19 interceptions which is second in the NFL and the Lions have thrown 15 picks, worse than all but six other offenses. The Lions have also allowed a league-high 50 sacks this year. Get the Cowboys DST active in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Cowboys defense managed to knock Brett Favre out of the game Week 13 in the second quarter with an elbow injury, but that didn't stop backup QB Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Green Bay still managed to post 27 points and 357 total yards. The Packers turned the ball over twice on Favre interceptions and the Cowboys did also manage three sacks.
Analysis: The Cowboys were anticipating a tough matchup against the Packers, but were expecting Favre to do the damage. It was quite the opposite. Favre looked horrible before leaving the game, while Rodgers and RB Ryan Grant racked up serious yards against Dallas. We will chalk it up as beginner's luck for Rodgers. The Cowboys take the field again Week 14 against the Lions. Detroit has struggled in recent weeks on offense and the Cowboys DST can be considered a viable Fantasy start.
News: The Cowboys DST will host Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in a Thursday night game in Week 13. The Packers currently have the third-best offense in the NFL, including a second-rated passing game, but a NFL-worst rushing game.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST ranks seventh in total defense, including 21st against the pass and fourth against the run. Expect Favre to throw early and often, and he doesnt throw many picks. This DST unit is still worth starting in 12-team leagues.
News: The Cowboys defense completely shut down an inept Jets attack Week 12 in Dallas, limiting it to three points on 180 yards. It also had two sacks, a recovered fumble and an interception -- the last of which Terence Newman returned 50 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys special teams had 77 return yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST generally thrives against weaker opponents, but it has a tough matchup Week 13 against the Packers. You might want to consider benching it if you can find a better option on waivers.
News: The Cowboys DST will host the Jets in Week 12 on Thanksgiving Day in Week 12. The Jets offense ranks 29th in the NFL.
Analysis: Consider the Cowboys DST a solid starter in all Fantasy formats for this week. They have the 18th-ranked defense, but the Jets should have a tough time running against this team, since we expect the Jets to have a big letdown a week after their win over the Steelers.
News: The Cowboys allowed 423 yards of total offense and 23 points in Week 11 vs. Washington. They forced two turnovers -- an interception and a fumble -- and had one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Cowboys allowed a career-high 348 yards to QB Jason Campbell, but they held the 'Skins to just two touchdowns in the game. The Cowboys defense isn't one of the elite units in Fantasy, but they should be used in leagues of 10-plus teams for Week 12 vs. the N.Y. Jets.
News: Dallas hosts the Washington Redskins on Sunday in Week 11. The Redskins have the 18th-ranked offense (24th through the air and eighth on the ground).
Analysis: The Cowboys DST seventh in total defense (17th against the pass and fifth against the run). They have 14 interceptions, which ranks them third in the league, so keep them active in all leagues for this positive matchup.
News: The Cowboys struggled to stop Eli Manning and the Giants in the first half of a Week 10 showdown, but when both teams came out in the second half, the Cowboys defense dominated. The Giants mustered up just three points in the second half and finished with 20 in a losing effort. Dallas harassed Manning all afternoon for two interceptions and five sacks.
Analysis: Dallas owns one of the best defenses in the NFL and showed it Week 10 against an explosive Giants offense. They made the right adjustments at the half after allowing 17 first half points. Dallas is probably licking their chops at a Week 11 matchup against Washington and QB Jason Campbell. Start the Cowboys DST Week 11.
News: The Cowboys allowed 17 points on 316 yards Week 9 at Philadelphia. They also registered three sacks and two interceptions and recovered a loose fumble. Their special teams gained 78 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST ranked sixth in the NFL going into Sunday's game. They've emerged as an advisable Fantasy play more often than not this season, though Week 10 at the N.Y. Giants presents a less-than-favorable matchup.
News: Dallas is ranked sixth in total defense, including 13th against the pass and fifth against the run. Their 10 interceptions this season rank them tied for sixth in the NFL.
Analysis: The Coyboys DST travels to Philadelphia Sunday, to face the Eagles' eighth-ranked offense (10th in the pass and 13th in the rushing game). We recommend starting this defensive/special teams unit in Week 9.
News: The Cowboys DST is off for Week 8 before traveling to Philadelphia in Week 9.
Analysis: Dallas is ranked seventh in total defense and they are a solid start in most Fantasy formats because they can rack up sacks (nine in the past three weeks).
News: The Dallas DST scored a touchdown Sunday against the Vikings when Pat Watkins returned a blocked field goal for a score. The Cowboys also had three sacks and recovered a fumble. Patrick Crayton had two punt returns for 19 yards, and Tyson Thompson had one kickoff return for 17 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is a solid option and is worth using in the majority of Fantasy leagues. Dallas is off in Week 8 and returns Week 9 against the Eagles.
News: The Cowboys DST will host the Minnesota Vikings and breakout rookie RB Adrian Peterson Sunday afternoon. The Vikings are 28th in the passing game, but their running game is top-ranked, as they have averaged 170.2 yards on the ground so far.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST ranks 11th in total defense, including 24th in the passing game and seventh against the run. The Cowboys have 15 sacks and they still lead the NFL with 10 interceptions, so consider them a low-end starting unit in Week 7.
News: Golf has a mulligan for do-overs and the Cowboys defense would sorely love another crack at the Patriots after an abysmal performance Week 6. Not only did the Patriots rack up 448 total yards of offense against Dallas, they dropped 48 points on the scoreboard. The Cowboys did force a turnover on a fumble and score a touchdown on the play, as well as rack up three sacks. But they failed to pick off Tom Brady, who threw five touchdowns and racked up 388 yards.
Analysis: Ouch is the only term that comes to mind. The Cowboys came into the game with the eighth best defense, but looked more like the No. 32 unit Week 6. The Patriots have that effect on many people. The Cowboys will look to get back on track Week 7 against the Vikings. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Cowboys defense had a solid game on the road in Week 5, limiting the Bills to 24 points on only 229 yards of offense. The Cowboys also recorded three sacks and had an interception. Their special teams gained 92 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST doesn't make for a spectacular start in Fantasy, but it posts positive stats more often than not. You'll want to reserve it Week 6 against the mighty Patriots, though.
News: The Cowboys DST has allowed just 80.5 rushing yards per game and a total of just one rushing touchdown this season. They travel to play Buffalo this Monday night in a mismatch.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST rank eighth overall on defense (15th against the pass and seventh against the run), but Buffalo's offense is brutal, ranking 31st overall (31st in passing and 18th in rushing). Start Dallas in all formats.
News: The Cowboys DST had an interception, two sacks and only allowed seven points Sunday against St. Louis. The defense did not allow a touchdown with the Rams scoring on a return by Dante Hall. Tyson Thompson had one kickoff return for 20 yards and Patrick Crayton had two punt returns for 45 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is a No. 1 option for Week 5 at Buffalo. They should continue to play well against the Bills next week.
News: The Cowboys DST is ranked just 23rd against the pass this season, averaging 250.3 yards per game through the air. Dallas will host a struggling St. Louis offense in Week 4, so their numbers should improve greatly. Marc Bulger (ribs) will likely play, but with his offensive line a little shaky and his superstar RB Steven Jackson (groin) sidelined, the going should be tough in Big D.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST is a solid start in Fantasy play against an offense that is ranked 29th in the NFL with just 10.7 points scored per game through three weeks.
News: The Dallas Cowboys DST allowed just 10 points in Week 3 at Chicago, allowing 239 total net yards in the blowout win. The Cowboys also accounted for three sacks, three interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: One of the interceptions was by Anthony Henry and he took it back 29 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys will look for similar success in Week 4 when they host QB Marc Bulger, RB Steven Jackson and the Rams offense.
News: The Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys have signed suspended defensive tackle Tank Johnson to a deal. However, Johnson is currently suspended for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy. The suspension is for eight games, though commissioner Roger Goodell has said he would consider making it six games if Johnson stays on his best behavior.
Analysis: Johnson will help the Cowboys' run defense, but it's the pass defense that's the biggest leak in Big D. However, their Week 3 matchup at Chicago is a favorable one, so start them if you own them in Week 3 action.
News: The Cowboys DST had two sacks and four interceptions Sunday against Miami. On special teams, Tyson Thompson had one kickoff return for 18 yards and Miles Austin had one kickoff return for 24 yards. Patrick Crayton had two punt returns for 49 yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST should be considered a low-end No. 1 option for Week 3 against Chicago.
News: The Dallas Cowboys gave up 35 points last week and won. The Miami Dolphins allowed only 16, but folded in overtime. Both defensive units will seek improvement Sunday when the Cowboys play at Miami for the first time in 11 years. The Cowboys' defense was without three starters for much of their season opener, and it showed as they gave up 438 yards in a 45-35 victory over the New York Giants. It was not the sort of Dallas debut anticipated for head coach Wade Phillips, hired after three seasons as defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. "It's one game, it isn't a season," Phillips said. "At the end of season, we'll see where we are. I'd be surprised if we score 45 points a game and gave up 35 a game. If we did, we'd be 16-0, and that would be nice."
Analysis: Cornerback Terence Newman and linebacker Greg Ellis sat out with injuries Week 1, but Newman might play against Miami. Nose tackle Jason Ferguson was sidelined for the season in the first quarter with torn biceps. The injuries may be one reason the Cowboys forced the Giants to punt only twice. "We gave up a lot of yards," cornerback Anthony Henry said. "Teams are going to look at that. It was a bittersweet win. If we don't get in and correct those things, then it's going to be a problem for us throughout the season." The Dolphins had a poor offensive showing in Week 1, so starting the Cowboys DST in Week 2 might not be such a bad option.
News: The Dallas Cowboys put nose tackle Jason Ferguson on injured reserve Tuesday and replaced him on the roster with Remi Ayodele. Ayodele, the younger brother of linebacker Akin Ayodele, went to training camp with the Cowboys and was released on the final cut. Atlanta claimed him off waivers, then released him Friday.
Analysis: Ferguson tore his right biceps muscle in the first quarter of the opener against the New York Giants on Sunday night. He is scheduled to have surgery Friday. The Cowboys are a solid play against Miami's anemic offense on the road in Week 2 despite the fact the Giants dropped 35 on them in the opener this past Sunday.
News: The Dallas Cowboys DST allowed 35 points in Sunday's Week 1 win against the Giants. S Roy Williams led the way with eight solo tackles, while injured DL Kevin Burnett (ankle) was able to play. Burnett did not have any defensive statistics, but he posted a solo tackle on special teams.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST will look for better results against the Dolphins in Week 2 in Miami.
News: Nothing really looks different when Dallas Cowboys defenders get set for a play. Basically, the same players from a year ago are lining up in the same spots. Then the ball is snapped and it becomes very clear -- this isn't Bill Parcells' 3-4 defense anymore. "Nah, it's totally, totally different," linebacker Bradie James said. "You see the smiles. I think you can see from our body language, we're actually having fun." While the base formation hasn't changed, new coach Wade Phillips brings an attacking philosophy with his 3-4 defense. Phillips adjusts the scheme to fit the players, freeing them to make plays instead of forcing them into set roles that can shackle them. "You've got an opportunity to move around and run places and not have to worry about technique all the time," Marcus Spears said.
Analysis: In their two preseason victories, the defensive starters didn't allow a touchdown against Denver or Super Bowl champion Indianapolis. Denver's first-team offense went 0-for-5 on third-down conversions. Some Broncos even grumbled afterward that Dallas blitzed too much for a preseason game. Now if only the Cowboys continue to play this well during the season, they will make Fantasy owners very happy. Consider them a No. 1 Fantasy DST worth a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: Defensive end Jason Hatcher and cornerback Quincy Butler returned to practice on Tuesday after extended absences because of hamstring problems.
Analysis: Both players are considered questionable for the Aug. 25 preseason game at Houston. The Cowboys will be an aggressive bunch this season thanks to their talented front seven and powerful defensive backs, led by Roy Williams. Consider them a No. 1 Fantasy DST worth a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: Over four practices with the Denver Broncos this week, the Dallas Cowboys either held back on defense or figured something out. Because they sure had no problem getting into the backfield Saturday night. The attacking, pressure-seeking front being implemented by new Dallas coach Wade Phillips throttled Denver's starting offense for two quarters, paving the way for the Cowboys to beat the Broncos 31-20 in a preseason game Saturday night. When starters were going head-to-head, Dallas (2-0) flustered Denver quarterback Jay Cutler into going 7-of-13 for only 58 yards. He failed to convert all five third-down chances, leaving the Broncos (1-1) to settle for two short field goals after drives that started in Cowboys territory following turnovers. "To stop these guys, whether it's the preseason or the regular season, feels pretty good," said defensive end Marcus Spears, who recovered a fumble and forced a holding call. "We got a chance to make some plays."
Analysis: The Cowboys will be an aggressive bunch this season thanks to their talented front seven and powerful defensive backs, led by Roy Williams. Consider them a No. 1 Fantasy DST worth a late-round pick in all leagues that use DSTs.
News: Keith Davis intercepted a tipped pass in Thursday's preseason game against Indianapolis and QB Jim Sorgi and returned it 41 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. He has not recorded an interception in 54 regular season games. DB Ken Hamlin, who was shaken up in practice earlier in the week with a blow to the head, did not play.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense held the Colts to 84 total net yards of offense in the first half, which is a good sign. The starters played well and they got a touchdown from the reserve Davis. Dallas' pass defense remains a little suspect, but they'll once again be a solid Fantasy DST heading into the 2007 season.
News: Safety Ken Hamlin sat out practice on Tuesday, a day after taking a shot to the head during a drill. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said it is possible Hamlin, signed as a free agent during the offseason, won't play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Colts.
Analysis: Consider Hamlin day to day. Hamlin's presence should help the Cowboys shut down the run, but their pass defense remains a little suspect. They'll once again be a solid Fantasy DST heading into the 2007 season.
News: The Cowboys and top pick Anthony Spencer agreed to terms on a five-year, $9 million deal, reports DallasCowboys.com. Spencer is expected to start outside and be a tackler and pass rusher in the mold of Shaun Phillips, who was coached up by new Dallas boss Wade Phillips.
Analysis: The Dallas defense should be an aggressive unit under Phillips' tutelage, and Spencer certainly lends himself to that. Expect the Cowboys DST to be a low-end starting unit in 2007.
News: The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys have signed strong safety Ken Hamlin to a one-year deal. Hamlin will add a lot of talent to a physical defense that already boasts FS Roy Williams and LB DeMarcus Ware.
Analysis: Hamlin's presence should help the Cowboys shut down the run, but their pass defense remains a little suspect. Still, consider them a startable Fantasy DST for 2007.
News: DeMarcus Ware had an extra spring in his step during the NFC's Pro Bowl practice. He had just found out Wade Phillips will be his next coach with the Dallas Cowboys -- which might mean Ware will be the NFL's next Shawne Merriman. Ware already is well on his way to stardom, making his first Pro Bowl appearance in just his second NFL season - but Phillips has a knack for making good linebackers better. "He can utilize me any way he wants," said Ware, who had 11 1/2 sacks last season. "I'm ready to learn and to expand my horizons, do different things. I'm ready for anything he wants. ... I've already talked to Merriman about him, and he got me all excited about playing for him."
Analysis: Phillips is expected to keep the Cowboys in their 3-4 scheme and may make them even more aggressive than they were under Bill Parcells. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end Fantasy option, worth a late-round pick in drafts in 2007.
News: The Dallas defense scored on a Terence Newman punt return for a touchdown with five sacks and an interception vs. Detroit in Week 17.
Analysis: The Dallas defense should be a low-end unit for 2007 league play.
News: The Cowboys defense had only two sacks, one interception and a forced fumble vs. Philadelphia in Week 16. Philadelphia totaled over 100 rush yards and 238 pass yards.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense should rebound and play well against a weak Detroit team at home in Week 17.
News: Notable inactives for the Cowboys in Week 16 vs. the Eagles include: SS Tony Parrish, CB Jacques Reeves, DE Junior Glymph, DT Montavious Stanley and DE Stephen Bowen.
Analysis: None of these players should be considered for Fantasy use in the first place, and their absence should not deter owners from using the Cowboys defense as a low-end choice in Week 16 Fantasy play.
News: The Cowboys were victorious in Week 15 against the Falcons, but not before giving up four touchdowns and 376 yards. They did have two interceptions (DB Pat Watkins and LB DeMarcus Ware) and four sacks in the game (DL Kenyon Coleman 1, Ware 1/2, DL Jason Hatcher 1 and LB Bobby Carpenter 1 1/2). Ware returned his interception 41 yards for a score.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense has been exposed the past two weeks giving up more than 900 yards and 70 points. It doesn't get any easier in Week 16 with the high-flying Eagles coming to town. Consider the Cowboys DST a low-end Fantasy DST for Week 16. Ware is one of the best Fantasy linebackers out there. If you don't already have him on your team, make sure to add him.
News: The Dallas Cowboys DST allowed 42 points and 536 total net yards in Week 14 against the Saints. They also had just one sack, no interceptions and no fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Cowboys will have their hands full trying to contain QB Michael Vick and the Falcons on Saturday night in Atlanta. After this performance, they are not a recommended Fantasy option on a short week of rest.
News: DE Stephen Bowen, S Tony Parrish, CB Jacques Reeves and DT Montavious Stanley are inactive for Week 14 against the Saints.
Analysis: None of the four players are worth using in most IDP Fantasy leagues when they are in the lineup.
News: The Cowbooys allowed 20 points and 396 yards of offense in Week 13 at the N.Y. Giants. They did not sack QB Eli Manning in the game and did not force any turnovers although they did recover a fumble on an interception return by Giants DL Mathias Kiwanuka.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense was started in many leagues to face what was supposed to be a beaten up Giants team, but that wasn't the case in Week 13. They'll face more of the same against a tough offensive Saints team in Week 14.
News: The Dallas defense recorded a pair of interceptions and a sack vs. Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving in Week 12. They held them to 120 pass yards and 10 points in the game, too.
Analysis: Dallas' defense is playing at a high level, something we expected when the season started. In fact, they've allowed more than 14 points in two of their last six games, so they're doing a good job. Use them against a Giants offense starting to feel the pressure of a season slipping away in Week 13 even though they'll be on the road (they will be rested).
News: Credit the Cowboys' defensive success against the Colts to defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's decision to have the linebackers and defensive backs wear wristbands with all the play calls on them. Because the Colts do not huddle and call a lot of plays at the line, it makes it difficult to substitute. And instead of one guy making the calls, everybody was required to look to the sideline to get the call from Zimmer. With the wristbands, the play-calling process became significantly smoother.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense held the Colts to 14 points and forced Peyton Manning into three turnovers in Week 11. The Cowboys defense is coming around after a slow start and the Cowboys DST should be used in Week 12 against the Bucs. Remember to set them in your lineup by Thursday as the two teams meet on Thanksgiving Day.
News: The Cowboys defense limited Colts QB Peyton Manning to two touchdowns and forced him to turn the ball over three times in Week 11. LB Demarcus Ware had a sack and forced fumbles, and DL Jay Ratliff had the team's other sack. DB Roy Williams and DB Kevin Burnett had interceptions. Burnett returned his 39 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Cowboys defense did an excellent job against Manning in Week 11. The Cowboys defense is coming around after a slow start and the Cowboys DST should be used in Week 12 against the Bucs. Remember to set them in your lineup by Thursday as the two teams meet on Thanksgiving Day.
News: With the loss of starting linebacker Greg Ellis to a torn Achilles' tendon, LB Bobby Carpenter is hopeful that he finally gets a chance to have a bigger impact on defense. "I'm not going to view this as the be-all to end-all to my opportunity to play," Carpenter said Wednesday. "Hopefully, the coaches will have enough confidence in me to get me out on the field. If that happens, you have to be ready when that opportunity comes." Carpenter said he hasn't been told by Parcells how his role will change, but the first-round pick said he did more on defense in practice Wednesday. Parcells calls replacing Ellis "a big piece of the puzzle" in preparing for the undefeated Indianapolis Colts (9-0), who visit the Cowboys (5-4) this weekend. There are options beside Carpenter. Al Singleton has been primarily a special teams player, but started seven games last year before a season-ending injury, and nickel linebacker Kevin Burnett could take over. Junior Glymph was re-signed for depth last month but hasn't played yet. "We are going to evaluate it at the end of the week and see what's going to happen," Parcells said.
Analysis: Carpenter is worth adding in deep IDP leagues and keeper leagues but is not a recommended start in Week 11 against the Colts. Also reserve Singleton, Burnett and Glymph.
News: The Cowboys DST had two interceptions against Arizona. LB Bradie James had nine tackles. DB Antony Henry had seven tackles. DB Terence Newman had five tackles. DB Roy Williams had no tackles. LB DeMarcus Ware had two tackles and a sack. LB Akin Ayodele had four tackles and an interception. And DB Pat Watkins had an interception.
Analysis: Unfortunately, Cowboys OLB Greg Ellis suffered a torn Achilles' tendon and is expected to miss the rest of the 2006 season. "We're going to miss him a lot," teammate Demarcus Ware said after the game to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Keep the Cowboys DST reserved for Week 11 against the Colts.
News: The Cowboys defense allowed 300 total yards and 22 points in a Week 9 loss to the Redskins. The Cowboys got only one sack (LB Demarcus Ware) and forced only one turnover (a fumble) in the loss.
Analysis: Because the Cowboys could not force many turnovers or get many sacks, the Cowboys DST had a poor week for Fantasy purposes. Things could turn around in Week 10 though as the Cowboys head to the desert to play the Cardinals. Consider using the Cowboys DST.
News: The Cowboys defense, coming off a poor showing against the Giants in Week 7, rebounded nicely in Week 8 against the Panthers limiting them to 204 yards and 14 points. The Cowboys sacked Panthers QB Jake Delhomme three times (LB Greg Ellis 2, LB Akin Ayodele 1), had one interception by Roy Williams and forced one fumble, which they recovered. DB Anthony Henry led the team with eight tackles.
Analysis: The Cowboys flexed their defensive muscle in Week 8 and look to continue their good fortune in Week 9 against the Redskins, who they beat in Week 2 27-10. The Redskins were without a healthy RB Clinton Portis, but these two teams usually play a relatively low scoring game. Consider using the Cowboys DST in Week 9.
News: The Dallas Cowboys DST allowed 36 points and 328 total net yards in Week 7 against the Giants. They were able to record two sacks, an interception and fumble recovery in the loss.
Analysis: The Cowboys will have their hands full again in Week 8 at Carolina, as they look to corral QB Jake Delhomme, WR Steve Smith and the rest of the Panthers.
News: The Dallas Cowboys have declared WR Miles Austin, SS Keith Davis (ankle), WR Skyler Green, DL Jason Hatcher (ankle), CB Nathan Jones, OT Pat McQuistan and OL Cory Procter are inactive for Week 7 against the Giants
Analysis: When healthy, none of the players above are worth any Fantasy consideration.
News: The Dallas DST held Houston to 6 points and also added two interceptions and a fumble recovery. DB Anthony Henry had eight tackles and an interception. DB Roy Williams had four tackles and a fumble recovery. And LB Greg Ellis had an interception.
Analysis: The Cowboys will have a more difficult matchup in Week 7 against the Giants, so consider them a No. 2 DST.
News: The Cowboys gave up 38 points and 383 yards in Week 5 at Philadelphia. The did force two turnovers and managed to sack Eagles QB Donovan McNabb three times.
Analysis: The Cowboys had a tough matchup and it showed. In Week 6, they'll have a much easier time against the Houston Texans.
News: The Cowboys allowed just 14 points in Week 4 at Tennessee. They limited the Titans to just 229 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers in the game. They also picked up two sacks (one a piece for Chris Canty and Kevin Burnett) and Bradie James returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: The Cowboys won't face many matchups as clearly easy as this one through the season, so hopefully you had them in your active lineup. They'll face a much tougher matchup in Week 5 at Philadelphia, but they are still a great bye-week replacement.

Cowboys give LB James extension
News: The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran linebacker Bradie James on Tuesday to a five-year contract extension.
Analysis: James led the team in tackles in 2005 and is off to a solid start so far this season. His presence makes the Cowboys TG a favorable Fantasy defense heading into Week 4 at Tennessee once the team returns from its bye.

'Boys clamp down on the 'Skins
News: The Dallas defense allowed just 10 points and 245 total net yards in Week 2 against the Redskins. They also posted six sacks and an interception by S Roy Williams.
Analysis: The Cowboys have a bye in Week 3. However, they are a strong Fantasy option for Week 4 at Tennessee against a shaky Titans offense.

Cowboys DST lit up by Jags
News: The Dallas Cowboys DST allowed 24 points and 307 total net yards in Week 1 at Jacksonville. The Cowboys did not record any fumble recoveries but had a sack and an interception in the loss.
Analysis: The Cowboys will look to right the ship in Week 2 against the Redskins. Despite the inauspicious beginning, they remain a decent play in most Fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Cowboys DST ready to explode?
News: The strength of the Cowboys might just be on the defensive side of the ball. The defense is still fast but the players bring punch when they get there. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware, linebacker Bradie James, safety Roy Williams and cornerback Terence Newman are the stars of the defense, but this developing defense has several players on the verge of breakout years, including defensive ends Chris Canty and Marcus Spears, and Ellis, who reminds coach Bill Parcells of Willie McGinest at linebacker.
Analysis: Dallas will play at Jacksonville in Week 1, and it should be a good matchup for the 'Boys. Keep in mind that Jacksonville's running game is not a complete strength and that they're without a consistent receiving threat. That said, make the Cowboys DST a starting unit for Week 1.

Cowboys cut pair of defenders

DL Marcus Spears suits up

Cowboys D ready to execute
News: Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells believes his team is done transitioning to his 3-4 defensive scheme and will be ready to execute the scheme to perfection. His team shares his optimisim. "This year, everybody knows what to expect. Everybody's not guessing out there. We all have some experience," said Bradie James, the fourth-year linebacker in charge of calling the defensive signals. "We're a lot more comfortable. You just see guys out there, how fast everybody is running around, not thinking," said cornerback Terence Newman, the first player Parcells drafted after coming to the Cowboys in 2003. "Being in the second year is a boost."
Analysis: No more guesswork for Dallas defenders. Instead of trying to learn the 3-4 defense, the Cowboys are just playing it this season. The 'Boys defense is a nice fallback option on Draft Day after the elite options are off the board due to their nice upside.

Suspension looming for FS Coleman
News: The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports that Dallas safety Marcus Coleman will be suspended for four games by the NFL for violating its' Substance Abuse Policy, according to league sources.
Analysis: Coleman has no impact on the Cowboys defense at this point anyway. The Cowboys have a world of potential on defense, but there are better options for owners in standard Fantasy leagues that use DSTs. Consider Dallas a supreme bye-week replacement unit.

DL Spears inactive on Monday
News: DL Marcus Spears (knee) was inactive for Monday's preseason game against the Saints in Shreveport, La., missing his second consecutive exhibition game.
Analysis: Spears was a thunderous talent, but this injury is a red flag that signals a potential to be injury prone. Rookie Bobby Carpenter, though, is a solid prospect for Dallas. The Cowboys have a world of potential on defense, but there are better options for owners in standard Fantasy leagues that use DSTs. Consider Dallas a supreme bye-week replacement unit.

LB B. Carpenter moves inside
News: The Cowboys' official website notes that former defensive end Greg Ellis had an impressive debut as a linebacker in a preseason game at Seattle Saturday. The Cowboys are asking Ellis to play LOLB opposite DeMarcus Ware. Ellis' pass-rushing skills from a stand-up linebacker spot can prove beneficial for this defense. Ellis recorded a sack and two tackles in limited action. Ellis' move to LOLB has allowed the Cowboys to move rookie Bobby Carpenter to inside linebacker.
Analysis: The Cowboys are asking Ellis to play LOLB opposite DeMarcus Ware. Ellis' pass-rushing skills from a stand-up linebacker spot can prove beneficial for this defense. Ellis recorded a sack and two tackles in limited action. "My main deal was just being able to tackle guys in the open field on solo tackles," Ellis said, "because I'm like, 'I'm by myself, I'm going to look bad if I miss him and it's going to hurt the team if I miss him.' That's one of the challenging things that you have to do at that position is make open-field tackles." Ellis' move to LOLB has allowed the Cowboys to move rookie Bobby Carpenter to inside linebacker. Ellis is worth grabbing late in IDP formats also because of his pass-rushing skills. The Cowboys DST is expected to be a solid Fantasy unit once again.

DL Spears out against Seahawks
News: DL Marcus Spears (knee) was inactive for Saturday's preseason game at Seattle.
Analysis: Spears was a thunderous talent, but this injury is a red flag that signals a potential to be injury prone. Rookie Bobby Carpenter, though, is a solid prospect for Dallas. DE Spears out, LB Carpenter in
News: Cowboys DE Marcus Spears tore cartilage in his right knee in the first workout of training camp and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday that will keep him out up to three weeks. "The problem with that is that he misses all of the work and he needs it badly," head coach Bill Parcells said. Spears, a first-round pick before last season, had the start of his career slowed by injuries to the same knee, right ankle and right calf during his first training camp. He still managed to break into the starting lineup midway the season, and is expected to hold down the left end of Dallas' 3-4 front again this season. Elsewhere, the Cowboys and first-round pick Bobby Carpenter agreed to a five-year deal, and he should end up as a starting OLB.
Analysis: Spears was a thunderous talent, but this injury is a red flag that signals a potential to be injury prone. Carpenter, though, is a solid prospect for Dallas. The Cowboys have a world of potential on defense, but there are better options for owners in standard Fantasy leagues that use DSTs. Consider Dallas a supreme bye-week replacement unit.

Cowboys safety shot, hospitalized
News: Dallas Cowboys safety Keith Davis was shot twice while driving on a Dallas highway early Sunday and was hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing surgery to remove bullet fragments. His agent, Curtis Stephens, said the injuries were minor and that Davis expected to be released late Sunday or Monday. "He's going to fully recover and he's in good spirits," Stephens said. "Everything is being done on a precautionary basis. Two physicians both gave him a thumbs up. ... If camp opened tomorrow, he'd like to think he'd be there tomorrow."

The 27-year-old Davis is among the Cowboys' top special teams players and the incumbent starting safety opposite Roy Williams. He'll have minimal value as an IDP player in drafts. Cowboys special teams update
News: The Dallas Cowboys are considering a number of options for the kick return game next season. First-round pick Julius Jones, the all-time leading kickoff return man for Notre Dame, is open to the duties. "I don't really know how that's going to work out or if they'll even put me back there," Jones said. "I've done it and I'll do it if they ask me to. Right now, I'm just trying to learn as much as offense as I can."
Analysis: The team is also considering WRs Terrance Cooper, Patrick Crayton and Brandon Middleton, as well as RBs Aveion Cason and ReShard Lee. The Cowboys will again be a top Fantasy defense/special teams unit in 2004 no matter which player comes out the winner of the competition, however Cason might be the best option to provide even more Fantasy appeal.

Ross' status in question
News: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Derek Ross has cartilage damage in his left knee that might require surgery. If doctors remove the damaged cartilage, he could be back for Week 2. If they repair it, Ross will likely miss the entire 2003 season. "It depends on what happens once they go in there and what they decide to do," coach Bill Parcells said. "That's his choice. We're not advising him one way or another."
Analysis: A decision on Ross' knee is expected to come this week. He has been competing with Mario Edwards to be the Cowboys' starting right cornerback.
