News: The Broncos drafted four defensive players in April's draft, the biggest of which (figuratively and literally) was Cincinnati defensive tackle Derek Wolfe. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound run-stuffer is expected to boost the team's defensive line rotation. Denver also drafted Arizona State cornerback Omar Bolden, Tennessee defensive end Malik Jackson and Kentucky outside linebacker Danny Trevathan.
Analysis: The Broncos are quietly putting together a nice offseason on their defense -- it's simply being overshadowed by their acquisition of Peyton Manning. Wolfe should help bolster the run defense and the free agent defensive back signings of Mike Adams and Tracy Porter should go a long way in helping the Broncos against the pass. Tack on Jack Del Rio running the defense and the Broncos DST is starting to look pretty good. They're still a No. 2 unit but one worth keeping tabs on early on during the season in case they can develop into a unit worth starting. Expect to find them off waivers during the season.
News: The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with Jack Del Rio to become the clubs new defensive coordinator, the team announced Friday night. Del Rio was coach John Foxs first defensive coordinator in Carolina in 2002 before leaving after one year to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars, who fired him in November. Del Rio replaces Dennis Allen, who left after one year in Denver to become the coach of the Oakland Raiders.
Analysis: Del Rio is the Broncos seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons. Others who have filled the Mile High musical chair in the last six seasons are Larry Coyer (2006), Jim Bates (2007), Bob Slowik (2008), Mike Nolan (2009) and Don Martindale (2010). Allen was the only one who left for a head coaching job. Del Rio will be in charge of a unit that was inconsistent throughout the past season and surrendered an average of 24.4 points per game. With solid LB Von Miller progressing, Denver should be viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy DST for 2012.
News: Denver's defensive unit could not stop Tom Brady and the Patriots offense on Saturday. New England opened the game with a quick score and did not look back. Brady threw for 363 yards and an NFL playoff record six touchdown passes. The Patriots piled up 509 yards in the 45-10 win. The Broncos failed to sack Brady, but Quinton Carter did pick him off once, which was Brady's only blemish in the game.
Analysis: Denver could not put pressure on Brady and that led to a ton of points and yards. The Broncos have a young core on the defensive unit and have gained some valuable experience. Denver's DST should be considered a low-end option on Draft Day this fall, unless they add some big pieces this offseason.
News: The Broncos defense did a solid job of limiting QB Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday. While Denver gave up 400 yards of total offense, including 156 on the ground, they sacked Roethlisberger five times and picked him off once in the 29-23 overtime win. The Broncos held Pittsburgh to six points in the first half before giving up 17 after halftime.
Analysis: The Broncos went after the injured Roethlisberger all game long and definitely rattled him early on. While he was able to put up some points late, QB Tim Tebow supplied the game-winning score on the first play of overtime so Denver's defense didn't even have to get on the field in the extra period. Their secondary will be put to the test in the next round of the playoffs as the Broncos will head to New England to face the Patriots. The unit allowed 451 yards of total offense, including 310 through the air, to the Patriots in the 41-23 loss in Week 15 so consider the Broncos DST as low-end Fantasy option in playoff formats.
News: The Broncos kept the Chiefs at bay for most of their Week 17 matchup, allowing just a first quarter rushing touchdown to Dexter McCluster. Unfortunately, the offense faltered so much that it was enough for them to lose the game. The Broncos managed to hold the Chiefs to seven points in the game and 281 yards, however they failed to force a defensive turnover and registered just a single sack in the game.
Analysis: It was an ugly game from an offensive standpoint, as neither team forced many turnovers; it was just a battle of two inept offenses. From a Fantasy perspective, a seven-point showing is usually a dominant day, but with the low amount of turnovers and sacks, it was merely a good day for the Broncos DST unit, which now faced the Steelers in the Wild-Card round of the playoffs next week. They are low-end unit for the matchup in Fantasy playoff formats.
News: Denver faces Kansas City and former QB Kyle Orton in Week 17. The Broncos get a Chiefs team that will likely be without it's leading rusher, Jackie Battle. That means the load will be carried by Orton and his arm. Kansas City has been totaling 312.8 yards of offense per contest this year and are among the worst scoring offenses (13.7) in the league.
Analysis: Opposing DSTs are averaging 12.33 Fantasy points per contest versus the Chiefs this year. Denver needs to win to have a shot to make the playoffs, so they have a lot to play for. Fantasy owners should view them as a low-end No. 1 DST option for this weekend.
News: The Broncos DST did little on Saturday at Buffalo in Week 16. The Broncos had just one sack by Elvis Dumervil and had no turnovers in a 40-14 loss. On special teams, Matt Willis had seven kickoff returns for 138 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST will look to rebound in Week 17 against the Chiefs. Consider the Broncos DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option against Kansas City.
News: The Broncos had a hard time slowing down the Patriots in Week 15. They allowed 451 yards of total offense, including 310 through the air, in the 41-23 loss. New England QB Tom Brady tossed two touchdowns and also had another on the ground. The Patriots totaled three rushing touchdowns. Denver recorded two sacks in the defeat but were unable to cause a turnover.
Analysis: The Broncos gave up 40-plus points for the third time this season on Sunday and had their six-game winning streak snapped. Their offense is not built to put up a ton of points so if they plan on making it deep into the playoffs, they will have to start limiting teams with potent offenses. Denver should have an easier time against the struggling Bills next week so consider their DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 16.
News: The Broncos will be going up against one of the better passing attacks in the league in Week 15 against the Patriots. With QB Tom Brady at the helm, New England ranks second in the NFL in passing, putting up over 319 yards per game, and 21st in rushing. Denver ranks 16th and 21st against the pass and run, respectively. The Broncos have recorded 37 sacks thus far with nine interceptions and five DST scores.
Analysis: The Broncos have held opponents to under 20 points in four of the last five games but they have not faced an offense quite like the Patriots thus far. New England is averaging over 30 points per contest and have some serious threats in the passing game. Denver will have to limit Brady and Co. if they plan on winning on Sunday but based on how the two teams matchup, consider the Broncos DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 15.
News: The Denver defense happily welcomed back LB Von Miller from a thumb injury, and he helped the team harass Bears QB Caleb Hanie all day. But it was LB Wesley Woodyard, who lost his starting job in Week 9, who became the Broncos unlikely hero, forcing a fumble in overtime to help the Broncos get the ball back when RB Marion Barber had carried the Bears into Denver territory, to secure a 13-10 overtime victory. "[Barber] has a free lane to run. All of a sudden, somebody snatches the ball out, CB Champ Bailey said. Wow. We hadn't had a turnover all day." The Broncos held the Bears to 245 yards of total offense, and most impressively, a 2 of 15 mark on third downs.
Analysis: The Bears have been one of the easiest Fantasy matchups for DSTs since Cutler went down, and the Broncos stepped up in a big way. While they only forced one turnover, they did sack Hanie four times and hold the Bears to 12 first downs total. Thing get much tougher in Week 15 as they take on the New England Patriots and their vaunted offense that has put up 30 or more points in five straight games. Consider the Broncos a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 15.
News: Denver has struggled mightily against NFC North opponents this year, but they have one more opportunity to make amends for that on defense. They have allowed 126 points vs. three NFC North teams -- 49 to Green Bay, 45 to Detroit and 32 to Minnesota. The Bears, their Week 14 opponent, have only scored 23 points total in two games since QB Jay Cutler was knocked out against San Diego in Week 11. QB Caleb Hanie has been sacked 11 times in two starts, with six interceptions. The Bears will also be without RB Matt Forte for the contest.
Analysis: The Bears had been one of the toughest offenses to stop in the league before Cutlers' injury, as they mixed a good balance of pass and run. Opposing Fantasy DST unites had recorded 8.9 points per game against them in Cutler's 10 starts, which would be good for 14th in the NFL right now. Over the last two games, however, the Raiders and Chiefs units have combined for 41 points, an average that would be far and away the worst in the NFL. The Bears have looked mostly hopeless, and haven't done anything well with Hanie. The Broncos should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy DST unit for the matchup in Week 14.
News: The Denver defense overcame the absence of LB Von Miller (thumb) and a spirited effort by Minnesota to help the Broncos capture a 35-32 victory over the Vikings in Week 13. Denver LB Mario Haggan, who was filling in for the inactive Miller, returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown during the first quarter following a Minnesota safety. However, the Broncos permitted 13 unanswered points before taking control late in the fourth quarter. "We got a lot of things to do," said Denver DL Elvis Dumervil, who had a sack. "A victory is a victory.
Analysis: The Broncos managed three sacks in Sunday's game, but also yielded an unusual high number of points. It was only the third time Denver has surrendered 30-plus points. We dont have an explanation for that," DB Andre Goodman said. "At the end of the day, the Vikings played well. They exploited some of the things we were doing on defense and we tried to make adjustments but they werent working. Fantasy owners should consider the Broncos a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 14 against Chicago, which lost Matt Forte to an injury.
News: Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier is one several onlookers who has seen an improvement in the Denver defense this season. The Vikings host the Broncos in Week 13 on Sunday. They are doing a great job of pressuring people with their front four, and their corners are doing a good job of covering one-on-one," Frazier said. "What they are doing up front has really created some issues for some teams. However, Denver could be without one of its star defenders as LB Von Miller (thumb) is considered a game-time decision for the matchup.
Analysis: The Broncos dodged facing Vikings star RB Adrian Peterson, who was ruled out for the game on Friday. Denver has been able to vary its blitz packages installed by coach John Fox as the players have become more accustomed to the scheme. The defensive scheme has resulted in at least three sacks in the Broncos' past three games and 10 overall. With Peterson sidelined, Denver could be in store for another solid performance against Vikings QB Christian Ponder. Consider the Broncos a low-end No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 13.
News: The Broncos defense was able surrendered 13 points on 344 total yards of offense to the Chargers in Week 12. The unit was particularly stingy against the pass, holding Philip Rivers to just 188 yards passing in the 16-13 overtime win. The Broncos only gave up three points in the second half and overtime in the victory and held San Diego to a 35 percent conversion rate on third down (6 for 17). San Diego was unable to turn over the Chargers but did rack up three sacks, including two by DL Elvis Dumervil.
Analysis: Denver's defense has really been playing well of late and the unit was able to continue that trend on Sunday. The unit has now racked up three turnovers, seven sacks and score two touchdowns over their winning streak and are allowing just 12.2 points per game over that stretch. Now the unit will look to slow down Adrian Peterson and the Vikings in Week 13. That could be easier said then done --especially in Minnesota -- so consider the Broncos a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into next Sunday.
News: The Broncos will be looking to slow down the Chargers in Week 12. Denver's defense has allowed an average of just 15.6 points during their three-game winning streak and the unit has racked up three turnovers, four sacks and scored two touchdowns over that stretch. Elvis Dumervil said the biggest reason for the Broncos turnaround is the fact that the players are showing more trust in one another. "In this league, everybody's too good and if you have that one mistake, teams are good enough to expose it, he said.
Analysis: While Denver's defense has been playing much better of late, the unit will likely be tested this week. San Diego has still has a ton of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and can put up points in a hurry and the Chargers put up 29 points and 418 total yards of offense in their first meeting back in Week 5. Owners should consider the Broncos a low-end No.1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 12.
News: Denver walked away with a 17-13 victory over New York in Week 11. Defense and special teams play big roles in the game as Andre Goodman returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. The Broncos also recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff after that pick six. Denver also put a lot of pressure on Jets QB Mark Sanchez, sacking him three times.
Analysis: The Broncos DST contained the Jets on Thursday night, allowing the only touchdown to be scored by an offensive lineman. Von Miller continues to progress and the Broncos keep on winning with Tim Tebow at the helm. Still Fantasy owners should view them as anything more than a No. 2 DST option heading into Week 12 against the Chargers.
News: The Denver defense will attempt to slow another potent run game during its Week 11 matchup against the Jets on Thursday. New York enters the contest averaging just under 100 rushing yards per game this season (98.1), but has shown improvement in recent weeks. In contract, the Broncos are permitting an average of 117.6 yards per game on the ground and have surrendered only one rushing touchdown this season.
Analysis: Denver has had just one defensive hiccup this past month -- against Detroit -- en route to a 3-1 mark in its last four games. In the three wins, the defense has allowed 15, 24 and 10 points and a 9-for-37 third-down rate with 10 sacks. Broncos coach John Fox said the success has been a result of more consistent tackling recently from the group. Denver should be considered a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST against the error-prone Jets.
News: The Broncos DST played well in Week 10 at Kansas City on Sunday. The Broncos had four sacks and held the Chiefs to just 10 points. On special teams, Quan Cosby had two punt returns for 16 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is a low-end Fantasy option in all leagues. Ignore them in Week 11 against the Jets on Thursday night.
News: The Broncos DST has the chance to play well in Week 10 at Kansas City based on their play on the road. In three of their past four road games, the Broncos have reached double digits in Fantasy points in a standard league. Most of that has been with their opponents -- Tennessee, Miami and Oakland (Green Bay was the lone road opponent over that stretch where they struggled) -- but Denver could get some turnovers out of Chiefs QB Matt Cassel.
Analysis: The Broncos DST has the chance to play well at Kansas City, but they should not be used in the majority of leagues. Only start the Broncos DST in deeper formats.
News: The Broncos certainly picked a thrilling play to break a fourth-quarter tie with Oakland in Week 9. Denver took its first lead since the first quarter when Eddie Royal returned his first punt of the season 85 yards for a touchdown. The Broncos held the Raiders to just seven points after halftime to secure a 38-24 victory on the road Sunday. Denver was assisted by three interceptions from Raiders QB Carson Palmer, two by DB Champ Bailey.
Analysis: With Oakland RB Darren McFadden out with a foot injury, the Broncos were able to limit the Raiders to just 100 yards on the ground and did not permit a rushing touchdown for the seventh time in eight games this season. Denver also managed two sacks on Palmer as the defense relied on his mistakes to win for the second time over its past three games. Consider the Broncos a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 10 at Kansas City.
News: For all the buzz surrounding Carson Palmer's first start as Oakland's quarterback, Denver hasn't lost sight of the fact that the Raiders have run for 782 yards and nine touchdowns in the last three meetings between the two clubs. The Broncos travel to Oakland in Week 9. "Our attention is not so much on who the quarterback is going to be but stopping that two-headed attack they've got back there," Denver DB Brian Dawkins said. That Raiders attack is expected to be reduced by one as RB Darren McFadden is unlikely to play Sunday with a foot injury.
Analysis: It appears that the Broncos will see a mixture of RBs Michael Bush and Taiwan Jones instead of McFadden. "They still want to tote the rock," Dawkins said. "No matter whos back there, the offensive line does a good job of moving people and getting people on the ground so their backs can have open lanes." Bush will likely start and has rushed for 600 yards and four touchdowns on 134 carries in 10 career starts. The Broncos' defense has been battered since the Week 1 meeting and yielded at least 330 total yards in five of its six games since then. Consider Denver a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 9.
News: With Detroit boasting one of the NFL's top passing offenses, Denver knew it couldn't allow many big plays during its Week 8 matchup. However, the Broncos were unsuccessful in their attempt to slow the Lions as QB Matthew Stafford threw for three touchdowns, including a pair of scores of at least 40 yards. Detroit finished with 376 total yards -- the fifth time Denver has permitted at least 300 yards and first occasion since Week 5.
Analysis: While the Lions defense feasted on inexperienced Broncos QB Tim Tebow for seven sacks, Denver managed just two takedowns of Stafford. In addition, the Broncos did not record any takeaways while the offense coughed the ball up three times. Denver entered the game with a turnover difference of minus-five, tied for third-worst in the AFC. Fantasy owners should view the Broncos as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 9 at Oakland.
News: Detroit WR Calvin Johnson has been a terror for opponents this season, posting three straight 100-yard games and leads the NFL with 10 touchdown receptions -- four more than anyone else. But he will see plenty of DB Champ Bailey during their Week 8 matchup and the perennial Pro Bowler has developed a plan for the talented wideout. "I know if I stay in front of you, no matter how hard you push me, it's going to alter your route, period," Bailey said. "That's all I'm trying to acomplish at the end of the play -- alter his route."
Analysis: The Lions figure to be missing top RB Jahvid Best (concussion) for a second straight week, but that hasn't seemed to affect Denver's strategy. "It does affect their offense but at the end of the day they're going to run the same scheme and do the same things with (Maurice) Morris back there," Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said. "We're planning for scheme as much as personnel." Despite Best likely out, Fantasy owners should consider the Broncos a No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 8 as they have allowed 25.8 points per game this year.
News: The Broncos DST corralled four sacks of Matt Moore in Week 7 with a forced fumble they recovered. They held the Dolphins to 15 points and 267 total yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST wasn't the best option in Week 7, but they did pretty well nonetheless. Next week the Broncos will have their hands full with the Lions at home. We won't be quite so high on them headed into Week 8.
News: With Miami sending out QB Matt Moore for his second start of the season in Week 7, Denver hopes to maintain the strong defensive pressure it showed during its last game against San Diego. The Broncos tallied a season-high five sacks against the Chargers in Week 5 and have 12 total sacks this year, 18th-most in the NFL. Moore struggled to escape the Jets' smothering defense in Week 6 and was taken down four times. Denver has permitted an average of 27.8 points per game this season, while Miami has posted just 15 points an outing.
Analysis: Despite surrendering at least 400 total yards in back-to-back outings, the Broncos defense could be facing a favorable matchup against the winless Dolphins, who have lost by double-digits in all but one game this season. Miami has yielded double-digits in Fantasy points (in CBSSports.com standard leagues) to its past four opponents, including 24 points to the Jets during Week 6. Opponents have also recorded 18 sacks and seven interceptions this year. Consider Denver a quality No. 2 Fantasy DST for the Week 7 matchup.
News: Denver sacked San Diego QB Philip Rivers four times and forced a fumble in Week 5. After San Diego forced a turnover in the first quarter, Denver returned the favor with a pick-six by Cassius Vaughn to give the Broncos the lead. Vaughn went 55 yards for the score, but Denver wouldn't be able to hold on for the win. Despite doing some good things on Sunday, Denver would still lose the game 29-24.
Analysis: The Broncos are still a work in progress, but are getting better as the season moves along. The Broncos are off next week and then face the Dolphins in Miami. While that is a favorable matchup Denver still has some work to do. Consider them a No. 2 DST option moving forward, depending on the matchup.
News: The Broncos haven't forced many turnovers this year and besides rookie Von Miller, Denver has had trouble putting pressure on the quarterback. Miller has four sacks on the year (Denver has seven total). Miller said he's not worried about his numbers, he just wants to improve. "I can definitely play way better than I have," he said. "And that's the motivation for me to keep striving to be the player I want to be and push this defense to the team we want to be." The Broncos have another tough task in Week 5 as they host the Chargers, a team they have struggled against. San Diego is totaling 415.8 yards of offense per contest and 22.8 points per game.
Analysis: The good news is that Denver has a key component in that defensive unit and his name is Miller. The bad news is he's just one player and will need help if this squad wants to improve. They have just seven sacks and two interceptions on the year, something that will have to change if they want to win games. In terms of Fantasy value, the Broncos DST is not worth starting this Sunday and should be viewed as a low-end No. 2 option.
News: Denver got run over by Green Bay's offense in Week 4 as Aaron Rodgers passed for 408 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored twice on the ground as the Broncos had no answer for him. The Packers tallied 507 yards of total offense en route to the 49-23 win over the Broncos. Denver did record two interceptions on the day. Rookie Von Miller also recorded two sacks in the contest.
Analysis: The Broncos were just outmatched in Week 4. Things don't get much better as they host division rival San Diego in Week 5, another team with a high-powered offense. Denver now has seven sacks and two picks on the year, so at least they are taking steps in the right direction. Unfortunately they haven't made enough progress to be worthy of owners in Fantasy leagues just yet. Continue to leave Denver's DST on the waiver wire.
News: Denver travels to Green Bay in Week 4 and take on the high-powered Packers offense. Green Bay is piling up more than 400 yards of total offense per contest this year. But defensive coordinator Dennis Allen feels his unit will be ready. "I think his athleticism matches up against them," he said. Allen's blueprint for this defense is to create turnovers from his aggressiveness, but they have just five sacks and no interceptions so far this season. "I don't know whether it's schematic or guys making plays at certain times, but those things come, and they come in bunches," Allen said.
Analysis: Denver's offense will have to run the ball well to keep Green Bay's offense on the sideline. If Aaron Rodgers and company get clicking, it won't be pretty for the Broncos. Fantasy owners should avoid Denver's DST for Week 4.
News: Playing without Champ Bailey again in Week 3, the Broncos DST was bombarded by the Titans. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 311 yards, though the Titans run game totaled just 38 yards. The Broncos picked up two sacks and forced a Hasselbeck fumble in the game.
Analysis: Next up for the Broncos DST: The Packers, in Green Bay. They might be the worst DST to take on in Week 4. Consider other options.
News: The Broncos head to Tennessee to take on Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt and the Titans in Week 3. Now under normal circumstances no one would touch the Broncos DST in this game given the weapons on the Titans offense. But Johnson has struggled to start the season and Britt is not completely healthy. That said, the Titans put up 26 points last week and the pass attack behind QB Matt Hasselbeck was good for over 350 yards. Champ Bailey is not expected to play for Denver but DE Elvis Dumervil (shoulder) and LB D.J. Williams (elbow) might be back.
Analysis: You'd have to be pretty desperate to trust the Broncos DST in Week 3. The Broncos have yet to intercept a pass this season and remain iffy against the run. Consider other options for your starting DST.
News: The Broncos were worried about containing Bengals RB Cedric Benson in Week 2, and they accomplished that feat. Benson had just 59 yards on the ground, but rookie QB Andy Dalton threw for over 330 yards and two scores in the contest. The Broncos would sack Dalton twice, but not get him to commit a turnover. Denver would hold on for the 24-22 win.
Analysis: Denver's secondary is beat up, and it showed. The Broncos face the Titans in Week 3, and Matt Hasselbeck has been averaging 303 yards through the air this season. It will be a tough matchup for the Broncos, which is why Fantasy owners should view Denver's DST as more of a No. 2 option.
News: Denver's defense might be without two key components on Sunday when the Broncos host the Bengals. DB Champ Bailey and DE Elvis Dumervil might not play in Week 2. "It's a huge statement for me to tell you what E and Champ mean to us for a team," teammate Brian Dawkins said on Thursday. "But those individuals that fill in are going to have to step up and play. That doesn't mean putting the whole world on their shoulders." The Broncos gave up 190 yards on the ground to the Raiders on Monday night, and will have to deal with RB Cedric Benson on Sunday. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said if the Broncos can't stop the run, it doesn't matter how rookie QB Andy Dalton does. "It really doesnt matter how much were confusing the quarterback when hes turning around and handing the ball off to (Cedric) Benson," he said.
Analysis: Denver held the Raiders to 105 passing yards on Monday night, and could cause plenty of confusion against a rookie signal caller. But if they are missing two defensive leaders, the task won't be easy. Plus Benson is coming off his 13th 100-yard rushing game for the Bengals and when he does that Cincinnati is 11-2. Denver is expected to be better on defense this season under new head coach John Fox so keep an eye on their progress going forward. For now, Denver is still more of a No. 2 DST option for Week 2.
News: The Broncos defense was not able to slow down the Raiders much in Week 1 but their special teams had a huge play. Early in the third quarter, WR Eric Decker took a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. Denver held Oakland to 105 passing yards on Monday night but allowed 190 yards on the ground.
Analysis: The Broncos also caused one turnover in Week 1 but their score on special teams made the difference in Fantasy. They are expected to be better on defense this season under new head coach John Fox so keep an eye on their progress going forward. But until Denver fixes their run defense, they will not be worth using in Fantasy. Consider the Broncos as more of a No 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 2 against the Bengals.
News: The Broncos will look to push pressure on their Week 1 opponent -- the Raiders. With Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers returning to the defensive line as ends, Denver will look to get after QB Jason Campbell and Oakland's suspect offensive line. The Raiders averaged 199 yards passing a year ago while gaining 156 yards per contest on the ground. The Broncos gave up 236 and 155 yards per contest against the pass and run, respectively.
Analysis: The Broncos defense has been gradually improving and they helped it out this past offseason by adding LB Von Miller and DB Rahim Moore via the draft. They should be able to get pressure on the QB but their secondary will be the big question mark. This group should improve as the season goes on so keep an eye on their progress going forward. But heading into Week 1, consider the Broncos DST as more of a No. 2 option.
News: The Broncos added some nice depth to their defense via the NFL draft. Not only did they draft Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller with the second overall pick, but they picked three other linebackers -- N.C. State's Nate Irving, Cal's Mike Mohamed and Oklahoma's Jeremy Beal -- and two safeties -- UCLA's Rahim Moore and Oklahoma's Quinton Carter. Miller will be the headliner coming out of the draft, but Moore, Irving and Carter have long-term appeal too.
Analysis: Denver's defense is gradually improving, and before long many people will forget about their paltry 2010 and instead focus on John Fox's unit in 2011. Where they are still suspect is at defensive tackle, a position they didn't add to in the draft. But with Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers returning to the defensive line as ends, Miller and D.J. Williams in the linebacking corps and Champ Bailey highlighting the cornerbacks, there's room for optimism. The Broncos DST isn't quite worth drafting, but they're close and should definitely be considered in season as a one-week replacement off waivers.
News: The Broncos selected Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, the premier pass-rusher in this year's draft, with the second overall pick Thursday night to help fix the league's leakiest defense. They'll team the Aggies' athletic playmaker with 2009 NFL sacks king Elvis Dumervil, who missed all of last season with a torn chest muscle a year after leading the league with 17 sacks. Team VP John Elway gushed over Miller leading up to the draft, saying the dominant senior is "a guy that when you turn on the film, you don't even have to know what number he is. ... He's a guy that's all over the field."
Analysis: No doubt about it, this defense is on the rise. Not only does it help that they'll get Elvis Dumervil back and Von Miller to pitch in, but the coaching that John Fox will do should turn in some good performances. The Broncos DST isn't quite worth drafting, but they're close and should definitely be considered in season as a one-week replacement off waivers.
News: The Broncos have re-signed CB Champ Bailey to a four-year deal that includes $15 million guaranteed for the 2011 season. Bailey remains one of the league's premiere shutdown cornerbacks even at age 32. Even though most teams only throw his way a couple times a game, Bailey's 48 career interceptions rank first among cornerbacks since he entered the league as the seventh overall pick by the Washington Redskins in 2009 and his 183 pass breakups are tops among players during the past 12 years.
Analysis: Things are looking up for the Broncos, who would have had a big void to fill had Bailey bolted. The defense is expected to revert to a 4-3 scheme and get a boost from new head coach John Fox working with them. There's some upside for the Broncos DST heading into 2011, but not enough to call them a draft-worthy unit.
News: Though Broncos head coach John Fox said he's going to use multiple fronts defensively, he made a point in telling the Denver Post he would be "committed" to the 4-3. The move likely means returning Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers to the defensive line. The team has issues beyond the front seven, though, as CB Champ Bailey, a free agent to be, has put his Denver house up for sale. The Broncos say they're committed to keeping him, but signs point to a cloudy future regarding the Pro Bowl cornerback.
Analysis: When the Broncos hired Josh McDaniels a couple of seasons ago, they switched from the 4-3 to the 3-4, but a lot of the personnel they have started their careers in the Broncos' 4-3 format. The change should be a positive, and with it they could regain some of their potential. If they can replace (or keep) Bailey, this will be a DST worth keeping an eye on. It only helps that they'll likely go defense with at least one of their first two picks in the NFL Draft.
News: The Denver Broncos are turning to Dennis Allen to fix the league's worst defense. The Broncos posted on Twitter late Monday night saying they had agreed to terms with Allen to become new coach John Fox's defensive coordinator. Allen served as New Orleans' secondary coach the past five seasons. "We are very excited to have Dennis Allen aboard," Broncos executive VP John Elway posted on Twitter. "Very bright young coach to lead our defense. ... Coach Fox has done a great job putting his staff together - excellent mixture of youth and experience."
Analysis: Allen's hiring along with Fox's track record suggest that the Broncos could have a 4-3 look to them in 2011. That's something to keep tabs on, but save for an injection of fresh talent, this defense isn't expected to be a force in Fantasy play. No one outside of the Rocky Mountain Region should be caught drafting the Broncos DST.
News: Broncos Executive VP of Football Operations John Elway posted on Twitter that John Fox has agreed to become the next head coach of the team. Fox spent nine season with the Panthers, where he specialized in overhauling the defense into one of the best in the league until the last two seasons of his tenure. It is believed that Fox will mold the Broncos' defense into the 4-3 scheme he ran in Carolina and previously in New York, which might actually suit several defensive players better than the 3-4. "I can't wait to get to work, pushing our players to be the best they can be," Fox said in a statement.
Analysis: It might not take long for the Broncos defense to improve, but owners won't have to spend a late-round draft pick this summer to cash in. As of now, the Denver DST won't move up rank lists, but if they start out hot in 2011 then they'll be worth grabbing off waivers.
News: Heading into its Week 17 showdown with division rival San Diego, the Denver defense thought it caught a reprieve for its woeful rush defense when Chargers RB Mike Tolbert was placed on injured reserve. The Broncos forgot about a healthy Ryan Mathews. The rookie looked extremely agile while shredding several Denver tacklers en route to a career-high three touchdowns as San Diego rolled to a 33-28 victory in Sunday's game. Mathews finished with 120 yards on 26 carries as the Broncos defense surrendered 447 total yards -- the sixth in the last eight games it has yielded more than 400 yards. Denver, which allowed the most points in the NFL this season (471), suffered losses by at least seven points in nine of its 12 defeats. There was a lone special teams bright spot as rookie Cassius Vaughn returned a kickoff return 97 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Similar to the teams' previous meeting in Week 11, Denver seemed over-matched from the start. The Broncos allowed 16 points before halftime -- they surrendered 21 in the first meeting -- and could also not prevent Chargers QB Philip Rivers from becoming the NFL's passing leader for the season. Denver, struggled to slow Mathews and allowed the sixth multiple-touchdown performance to an opposing running back this season. Playing at home where they have won just three times this season, the Broncos surrendered points on seven of San Diego's 13 drives, including on six Chargers possessions in a row. The defense, which was devastated by injuries even before the regular season started, will undoubtedly need some work prior to the 2011 opener. For now, the Denver DST will likely not warrant enough consideration to be selected in Fantasy drafts for next season.
News: In Week 17 against San Diego, the Denver defense will attempt to complete a feat it has accomplished rarely this season -- hold an opponent to under 350 total yards in a game. The Broncos have managed to contain opposing offenses to that mark or less just five times in 15 games as it has limped to the NFL's worst-ranked defense. Five of Denver's last seven opponents have racked up 400 yards of offense, including Oakland's 502-yard total in Week 15. The Broncos have been unable to reach opposing quarterbacks throughout the season and have not tallied a sack in their last three games. Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been sacked 33 times this season, tied for sixth-most in the league.
Analysis: The Broncos' woes stem from their ineffectiveness to stop the run. Denver is surrendering 153.9 rushing yards per game -- the second-most in the NFL (Buffalo, 162.5) -- and has held only three opponents under 100 rushing yards in a contest this season. The Broncos, who have also allowed the most points in the NFL (438) this season, have managed just single digits in Fantasy points in six consecutive games. In the teams' first meeting, San Diego racked up 35 points -- the fourth opponent in Denver's last six games to total at least 35 points. Consider other options before settling on the Broncos DST in Week 17 as it should be utilized only as a marginal Fantasy play.
News: The Broncos defense didn't play particularly well in Week 16 but made just enough plays at the end to help Denver hang on to beat the Texans 24-23. Denver surrendered 23 points on 401 yards of total offense, but kept the Texans off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Houston scored 17 points in the first half as the Broncos were able to hold the Texans to six second half points. The unit failed to record a sack but came up with a huge turnover late in the ball game. With the Texans down by a point, and on the move, rookie CB Syd'Quan Thompson picked off a pass from Matt Schaub to end the game. It was Denver's only turnover of the contest.
Analysis: Denver's defense wasn't overly impressive on Sunday but made just enough plays to pull out the victory. While it was nice to the Broncos defense finally step up and make some plays the unit will be tested in the season finale against the Chargers. San Diego put up 35 points on 400 yards of total offense in the team's first meeting and are still very explosive on offense, despite being eliminated from the playoffs. We do not recommend starting the Broncos DST in the season finale.
News: The Broncos defense will likely have their hands full trying to slow down the Texans in Week 16. Houston enters Sunday's matchup with the league's fifth best offense, averaging 377.7 yards per game and 23.8 points per contest. The Broncos DST is ranked 31st in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up just 18 sacks and 16 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: The Broncos have lost five games in a row and a lot of it could be blamed on their defense. They are allowing over 32 points per game during the slump and have not been able to slow down the opponent's running game. Denver will now have to face a very potent Texans offense on Sunday. Houston can put up points in a hurry and have been dangerous both on the ground and in the air this season. We do not recommend starting the Broncos DST against the Texans.
News: The Broncos defense entered Week 15 against the Raiders ranked 31st in the league against the run. They did not improve that ranking as Denver allowed Oakland to rush for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the 39-23 loss. RBs Darren McFadden and Michael Bushed combined for 190 yards and two scores and WR Jacoby Ford took a 71-yard reverse for a touchdown. The Broncos couldn't sack QB Jason Campbell at all in the defeat but picked him off twice.
Analysis: The Broncos have lost five games in a row and a lot of it could be blamed on their defense. They are allowing over 32 points per game during the slump and have not been able to slow down the opponent's running game. Denver could be in for another poor performance next Sunday against the Texans and their high-powered offense, so continue to view their DST as a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Broncos will face a team in Week 15 that blew them out 59-14 earlier in the year -- the Raiders. Denver gave up 508 yards of total offense when the division foes met, including 328 on the ground with five touchdowns. Oakland enters Sunday's game ranked third in the league in rushing offense but 24th in passing. The Broncos sport the seventh-best pass defense but are 26th in the NFL against the run, allowing over 132 yards per contest.
Analysis: The Broncos enter Sunday on a four-game losing streak and have given up an average of 31 points during that span. They have not been able to slow down the run much this season and could be in for another rough game with the way the Raiders have been running the ball of late. RBs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush have combined for 337 yards rushing and four touchdowns over the last two games. Considering the matchup, Fantasy owners would be wise to stay away from the Broncos DST in Week 15.
News: The Denver defense was eager for the opportunity to face a rookie quarterback -- Arizona's John Skelton -- in Week 14. However Skelton didn't see much of that imposing defense as he attempted 37 passes without getting sacked in the Cardinals' 43-13 victory on Sunday. The Broncos allowed five field goals to Jay Feely, and were also burned by the fleet-footed kicker on a fake attempt in the second quarter. On that play Arizona lined up to kick a 20-yard field goal but Feely instead scurried into the end zone just ahead of a pair of defenders to give the Cardinals their first touchdown of the game. Denver kept the game close before halftime and trailed 16-3 entering the intermission. But the Broncos, who surrendered 30-plus points to an opponent for the fifth time this season, allowed Arizona to score points on four of its seven second-half possessions.
Analysis: Even against a rookie quarterback in his first start, the Denver defense struggled. Skelton's 146 passing yards were the lowest the Broncos have allowed to a quarterback this season but the Fordham product completed two passes for 20 or more yards in the decisive second half. Denver was hoping to provide a good showing in Eric Studesville's debut as head coach but instead allowed 357 total yards to the Cardinals -- the eighth consecutive opponent it has allowed to gain 300-plus yards. If the Broncos can't limit a rookie quarterback, they could struggle again in Week 15 at Oakland. The Raiders handed Denver its worst loss of the season in Week 7 -- 59-14 on Oct. 24 -- and returns home where they are 4-2 this year. Consider other Fantasy options before settling on the Broncos DST in Week 15.
News: The Denver defense may have found the boost it needs to assist its woeful coverage this season -- albeit from another team. The Broncos, who travel to Arizona in Week 14 on Sunday, will line up against rookie John Skelton, who will make his first career start at quarterback for the Cardinals. While Denver has struggled immensely on defense this season in allowing 333 points -- worst in the AFC and third-most in the NFL -- Arizona stumbles into Sunday's game having scored just 12 points in its last two games. Expect the Broncos' defense to attack the rookie signal-caller immediately, providing confidence to a hungry defense that has nine sacks in its last four games. And for all of Denver's defensive struggles, it has allowed just six quarterbacks to throw for more than 200 yards in a game this season.
Analysis: Defense was never a strong point in former coach Josh McDaniels' scheme as the Broncos allowed four opponents reach 30 points in a game -- not surprisingly, all losses. Denver replaced McDaniels with running backs coach Eric Studesville on Monday and would like to receive tighter coverage from its defense. And if there was a team to aid in that process it would be the Cardinals, who rank 30th and 31st in total passing and rushing yards, respectively. With Arizona letting a rookie quarterback run an offense that has not scored 20 points in either of its last four games, the Broncos defense could be a nice sleeper pick this week. Consider Denever a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in Week 14.
News: The Broncos DST played well Sunday in Week 13 at Kansas City. The Broncos held the Chiefs to 10 points and 359 total yards. The Broncos also had one fumble recovery and two sacks. On special teams, Eddie Royal had three punt returns for 37 yards, and Eric Decker had two kickoff returns for 42 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST played better than expected given the matchup with the Chiefs. They also have a tremendous matchup in Week 14 at Arizona. Consider the Broncos DST a sleeper against the Cardinals.
News: Denver was stacking the box in Week 12 in hopes to contain St. Louis RB Steven Jackson. Denver entered Sunday ranked 31st in the league against the run. For the most part they did that, but allowed rookie QB Sam Bradford to throw for a career-high 308 yards. "I think we answered the challenge as far as that goes," DL Justin Bannan said. " All in all, we gang-tackled him and played stout up front. DB Champ Bailey said the emphasis on stopping Jackson worked, but a lack of pressure on Bradford killed Denver. "Whether its coverage disguise or pass rush or getting your hands in his face or something, we didnt do a good job of that," Bailey said. The Rams scored 26 points in first half, more than they've scored in a road game all season and second highest output of the season for a game. Denver couldn't contain Bradford as he threw for three touchdown strikes in the first half. "He was out there throwing darts," Bannan said. "He was incredibly accurate. He looked like a seasoned vet." Denver would lose the game 33-36, despite making a fourth-quarter rally. Denver would sack Bradford twice on the day.
Analysis: What we all learned from Week 12 is that the Broncos game plan was good and they executed it well. But the team wasn't ready for an offensive explosion from Bradford and his receiving corps -- most notably the tight ends. Bradford's three tight ends totaled 91 yards receiving and all three of his touchdown passes. Denver faces Kansas City in Week 13 -- team that is on fire offensively. The Broncos DST is not a recommended start and should be viewed as a No. 2 option for Week 13.
News: Denver hosts St. Louis in Week 12 and will likely see a lot of Rams RB Steven Jackson. Jackson carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards in Week 11, but should see more looks this week. The Rams' all-time leading rusher could have a bigger impact against the Broncos' 31st-ranked run defense, which allows 143.5 yards per game. Jackson ran for 121 yards in the teams' last meeting, lifting St. Louis to an 18-10 home win Sept. 10, 2006. The Broncos couldn't contain Philip Rivers in Week 11 as he threw for four touchdowns, but Sam Bradford isn't in Rivers league. If Denver's defense can't put pressure on Bradford though, they could be in for another long game. The Broncos have just 14 sacks on the year, which is tied for worst in the NFL.
Analysis: The Broncos defense got beat up in Week 11 against the Chargers. While the Rams don't the same fire power as San Diego, they have enough weapons to cause problems for Denver. The Broncos have been struggling lately, which is why Fantasy owners should be viewed as a No. 2 DST for Week 12.
News: The Broncos defense was unable to slow down Philip Rivers and the Chargers' high-powered offnse in Week 11. The unit surrendered 35 points on 400 yards of total offense, with 147 of those coming on the ground. Denver was able to record a sack in the loss, but struggled to get much pressure against Rivers as he threw for four touchdown passes against the unit. The Broncos were able to forced one turnover in the second quarter when Champ Bailey picked off Rivers int he second quarter for his 48th career interception.
Analysis: The Broncos defense could not contain the Chargers on Monday night. The unit was again gashed on the ground and while Rivers did throw for a season-low 233 passing yards, he still threw four touchdowns. The unit will try and regroup before the Rams head to town in Week 12. St. Louis has struggled on offense this season, so this could be exactly what Denver's defense needs to get back on track. Consider the Broncos a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 12.
News: The Broncos defense will have their hands full trying to slow down San Diego's high-powered offense in Week 11. The Chargers boats the league's top rated offense and are averaging 26.6 points per contest. Denver is ranked 25th in total defense and have allowed an average of 28 points per game this season. The Broncos DST is ranked 29th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up 13 sacks and forced 10 turnovers.
Analysis: The Broncos defense was able to record their first touchdown of the season last week against the Chiefs, but still surrendered 29 points and 484 yards of total offense. Denver has had problems slowing teams down this season, especially on the ground. The unit ranks 30th in rush defense and have had problems creating turnovers and getting to the quarterback. San Diego does have a few key players whose status is still unkwown for Monday's game, but still have plenty of firepower on offense. Consider the Broncos a No.2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 11.
News: The Broncos defense scored their first touchdown of the season in Week 10 against the Chiefs. Mario Haggan recorded three sacks in the 49-29 win and stripped the football out of Mat Cassel's hands on the third one. The ball was scooped up by Jason Hunter, who scampered 75 yards for the touchdown which put the Broncos up 35-0. The unit sacked Matt Cassel four times in the win and held the Chiefs' to 51 yards rushing. Denver did allow 29 points and 484 yards of total offense, but made up for it by forcing a turnover and scoring a touchdown.
Analysis: Denver has had some problems on defense this season, but played well for the most part. While they did surrender a ton of yards and points, keep in mind the Chiefs were just throwing the ball all over the place in the second half. Maybe the unit can gain some momentum from this win and play well over the second half of the season. However, the Broncos DST faces a tough matchup in Week 11 against the Chargers. San Diego has plenty of weapons on offense and can put up points in a hurry. Consider the Broncos a low-end Fantasy DST heading into Week 11.
News: The Broncos defense will have its hands full trying to slow down the Chiefs' ground game in Week 10. Kansas City's rushing attack, which is lead by Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles, is ranked first in the NFL averaging 179.6 yards per game. Denver is ranked 31st in run defense and have surrendered 14 rushing touchdowns this season. The Broncos DST is ranked 30th, in terms of Fantasy points and have racked up nine sacks and forced nine turnovers on the season.
Analysis: Denver has had some problems on defense this season, especially stopping the run. While injuries have no doubt taken its toll on the unit, the Broncos have had problems forcing turnovers and only the Bengals, and Buccaneers have forced fewer sacks. Denver's defense hasn't been able to stop anybody on the ground this season and we expect that trend to continue to Sunday. Consider the Broncos a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST heading against the Chiefs.
News: Denver entered Week 8 against the 49ers ranked 30th against the run (156.3 ypg). It did nothing to show the league it is ready to stop the run. Frank Gore rushed for 118 yards and San Francisco piled up 143 rushing yards in a 24-16 win. The Broncos held the 49ers to three points in three quarters as QB Troy Smith was making his first start in place of the injured Alex Smith. The 49ers then opened the playbook in the fourth and scored three touchdowns. San Francisco finished with 339 yards. The Broncos got no sacks and no turnovers.
Analysis: The problem for any defense is that if you get no pressure on the QB he is eventually going to break down the defense and that is what Smith did in the fourth quarter. He got a lot of help from Gore, who also wore down the Broncos D. Denver's disappointing year continues and the Broncos DST is just too risky of a Fantasy play. Denver is off until Week 10 against the Chiefs.
News: On a day when the last running back they faced won AFC player of the week honors for trampling all over them, the Denver Broncos tried to regroup defensively in anticipation of an even bigger challenge -- containing the San Francisco 49ers' Frank Gore in Week 8. "I think he is the best running back we've faced so far," Broncos defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale said Wednesday. "What he is good at is finding your mistakes." The Broncos made plenty of them last Sunday in a 59-14 loss to the Raiders in which the newly anointed player of the week, Darren McFadden, ran for a career-best 165 yards with touchdowns of 57, 4 and 4 yards, to go with a 19-yard catch-and-run for another score. McFadden's performance was part of a Raiders rushing attack that gained 328 yards and dropped Denver's rushing defense to a No. 30 ranking. The Broncos are allowing an average of 156.6 yards per game. Only winless Buffalo (174.4)and Tampa Bay (157.7) have allowed more. "We just need to be more consistent," Martindale said. "We've shown some spurts. We've played well against some really good running backs and then that happened to us last week and I'd be sitting up here telling you a lie that I wasn't shocked that that happened to us."
Analysis: While the 49ers have managed only one win this season and are now dealing with a quarterback change to Troy Smith because of a shoulder injury to Alex Smith, Gore has continued to bedevil defenses. Gore rushed for 102 yards in last week's 23-20 loss at Carolina -- his club-record 23rd 100-yard game -- and he leads the NFL with 914 yards from scrimmage (573 yards rushing, 341 yards receiving). "He's a big part of the offense and we expect that to go up," Broncos linebacker Mario Haggan said, referring to the anticipated increased workload for Gore because of the quarterback change. The Broncos have had success at times defending the run, most notably limiting Tennessee's Chris Johnson to 53 yards on 19 carries in an Oct. 3 victory over the Titans. They used outside linebackers Robert Ayers and Jason Hunter to hold the edges and funnel the runs back inside, where inside linebackers Haggan and D.J. Williams typically made the tackles. But Ayers is out with an injury and the defensive line is banged up. Coach Josh McDaniels believes the return of DBs Brian Dawkins and Andre Goodman will help restore some of the defensive "togetherness" critical to swarming to the ball and slowing down the run. View the Broncos DST at best as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 8.
News: Denver gave up over 500 yards of offense to Oakland in Week 7 -- 328 yards on the ground, which was the fourth-most rushing yards against them in team history. They also gave up 59 points through three quarters, which ties for the most points given up by any Broncos team. The Raiders five rushing touchdowns also tied a Denver record. The Raiders were coming off a week where they totaled just 179 yards of offense -- they had 208 in the first quarter in Week 7. The Broncos did not force a turnover, but did have two sacks on the day. Following the 45-point defeat Denver has a busy and condensed -- preparation week ahead with a trip to London looming. Weve all got to soul search deep within ourselves and find something to keep us going, LB Jason Hunter said. The Broncos will play the 49ers in London on Sunday.
Analysis: Denver had an awful showing in Week 7 and now has to deal with jet lag heading into Week 8. Their secondary is still missing some key components and it showed on Sunday. Denver could rank last in the NFL in both stopping the run and rushing on offense -- a large measure of a team's grit. Denver is allowing an average of156.3 yards per game and gaining an average of 68.4. The 49ers have had some tough losses this year, but have an offense that can produce some numbers. Between injuries, morale and travel in Week 8, the Broncos should be viewed as a No. 2 DST option.
News: Denver hosts AFC West division rival Oakland in Week 7. The Broncos are coming off a game where they contained the league's best rushing attack -- New York's RBs LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene to run for a total of 98 yards in Week 6. Denver is allowing 127.7 yards on the ground per contest and will be able to focus on the run against the Raiders. Oakland coach Tom Cable said he won't name a starting quarterback until game-time, as Bruce Gradkowski and Jason Campbell are both dealing with injuries. Veteran Kyle Boller is the only healthy quarterback on the roster. "It won't change them offensively," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said. "They'll still run it a bunch ... and they'll throw it downfield to those receivers and tight ends."
Analysis: The Raiders are managing just 182.3 passing yards per game this season. The Broncos secondary has been banged up the past few weeks, and were still missing DBs Champ Bailey (ribs), Brian Dawkins (knee) and Darcel McBath (ankle) from practice on Wednesday. Bailey got the wind knocked out of him in Week 6, but was able to return to action. Considering the Raiders offensive troubles and based on the quarterback situation, Denver's DST is a nice sleeper No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 7.
News: Denver went up against the best rushing attack in the league in Week 6, but allowed the Jets duo of LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene to run for a total of 98 yards. New York would have 129 yards on the ground and 198 through the air for a total of 327 yards. Despite a depleted secondary that was missing three key players, including safety Brian Dawkins, the Broncos went to four down linemen most of the game and befuddled Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who threw his first two interceptions of the season and could easily have had two more passes picked off. The Jets committed three turnovers altogether after having just one coming into the game. The Broncos got another scare when DB Champ Bailey had the wind knocked out of him after a Braylon Edwards' touchdown reception.
Analysis: The Broncos host the Raiders next week, a team that has struggled offensively. Denver contained the Jets running game the best they could and some would say they outplayed New York. "In a situation like that, you'd hope he wouldn't make that call and let the game be decided between the players, but he made the call, and that's what it is, and we have to live with it," Broncos LB Mario Haggan said on the pass interference call that set up the winning score. Denver's DST should be viewed as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 7 versus the Raiders.
News: Denver will be without some key components in Sunday's Week 6 matchup with the New York Jets, as five players were ruled out earlier in the week. Now one of the worst defenses against the run -- the Broncos are giving up 127.4 yards per game on the ground and have yielded five touchdowns through five weeks. Enter the running tandem of LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene, the NFL's best rushing attack. The Jets are averaging 165.2 yards per game, and will test the Broncos front seven from the opening snap. The Jets offense ranks 13th in the NFL, racking up 339.5 yards per game.
Analysis: With some key players missing from the secondary, the Jets may try to open up the field a bit. But why would they if they can control the clock with their rushing attack? The fact is Denver's DST will have to step up in Week 6. Besides DB Champ Bailey, the secondary is young and inexperienced. We view them as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 6.
News: Coach Josh McDaniels has ruled out five players on the Broncos DST for the Week 6 matchup against the Jets. Safeties Brian Dawkins (knee) and Darcel McBath (ankle) and cornerback Andre' Goodman (thigh) along with pass-rusher Robert Ayers (leg) and special teams captain Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) have all been ruled out. The Broncos are already playing without their best player, Pro-Bowler Elvis Dumervil, who tore his chest muscle and is out for the entire season. "Certainly the injuries don't make it easy, but we've been dealing with that for a long time now and I think the next guy has got to step up and play well," McDaniels said. "We've got to give them a good game plan. We might have to be creative with a few things that we do. But that's part of everybody's season." The Jets offense ranks 13th in the NFL, racking up 339.5 yards per game.
Analysis: The Broncos defense ranked 19th before the five players were ruled out. The loss of Dawkins' presence alone will also hinder the Broncos already-young defense. With the exception of Champ Bailey, the Broncos have little experience to limit the Jets' suddenly resurgent offense. Consider the Broncos DST as a reserve Fantasy option at best in Week 6.
News: The Broncos DST gave up 415 yards and 31 points to the Ravens in a Week 5 loss. Baltimore ran for 233 yards, while Denver managed just one sack.
Analysis: Denver clearly focused a little too much on stopping QB Joe Flacco and the Ravens passing game on Sunday and they paid dearly. In Week 6, Denver hosts the Jets, who aren't the best offense in the league but can move the ball when they need to. Continue to ignore the Broncos in all but the deepest of IDP Fantasy formats.
News: The Broncos DST has forced just six turnovers in four games but they will have more opportunities to create takeaways in Week 5 at Baltimore. The Ravens enter the game ranked dead-last in turnover ratio at -7. QB Joe Flacco has thrown six interceptions through four games. Still, Broncos QB Champ Bailey is worried about the Ravens WRs. Newly Acquired T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Anquan Boldin are getting more accustomed to the offense every week. "It's amazingly different," Bailey said. "They've probably got the best group in the league." Houshmandzadeh caught the game-winning touchdown in the Ravens Week 4 win over the Steelers. Baltimore ranks 21st in total offense, averaging 306.5 yards per game.
Analysis: The Broncos are right to focus on the Ravens passing attack. In Week 4, they held Titans explosive RB Chris Johnson to just 53 yards rushing. The run defense is in the upper-echelon in the NFL, allowing just 101 yards per game. The Ravens RB corps will also be playing at less than 100 percent with the injuries to Ray Rice and Willis McGahee. Consider the Broncos DST to be a No. 2 Fantasy value against the Ravens in Week 5.
News: The Broncos' defense held the Titans to 20 points on 294 yards in a Week 4 victory. The defense also recovered a Chris Johnson fumble and recorded a pair of sacks, but they did not make an interception. The special teams unit recovered a muffed kickoff return late in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: The biggest achievement for the Broncos' D on Sunday was holding Titans RB Chris Johnson to just 53 yards and forcing him to fumble. The Titans were not much of a challenge, and in Week 5, they will face the Ravens, a team that relies much more on defense than offense. With another decent matchup, consider the Broncos' DST a low-end No. 2 unit.
News: The Broncos DST comes into Week 4 with the third-fewest Fantasy points among all DST units, and they face their stiffest test on Sunday with a matchup against the Titans. The strength of the Broncos' defense has been their ability to contain the run, as they have limited opponents to just 283 rushing yards, which ranks 10th in the league. However, they have faced the Jaguars, Seahawks and Colts to date, none of which rank among the top 15 teams in rushing yardage. The Titans, on the other hand, rank eighth in rushing yardage, and their five rushing touchdowns lead the NFL (along with the Eagles).
Analysis: The Broncos DST has already been one of the least productive in Fantasy this season, and given the matchup they have ahead of them, there is little reason to expect improvement. The Broncos are no more than a low-end No. 2 DST heading into Week 4.
News: The Broncos DST allowed 27 points on 365 total yards of offense to the Colts in Week 3. The unit was unable to force any turnovers and allowed Peyton Manning to throw for 325 yards and three touchdown passes. Denver's defense did not record a sack and allowed the Colts to rack up 18 first downs in the 27-13 loss.
Analysis: The Broncos defense didn't play horrible on Sunday, but didn't play great either. The biggest thing that sticks out was the units inability to force any type of pressure on Peyton Manning. They held the Colts to just 40 yards rushing, which bodes well for Fantasy owners as the Broncos head to Tennessee in Week 4. The Titans boast one of the leagues best rushing attacks, so Fantasy owners may want to look elsewhere for defensive help. Consider the Broncos a low-end No. 2 DST heading into Week 4.
News: he Denver Broncos might have to face Peyton Manning with a pair of rookie cornerbacks next weekend. Both starting cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Andre' Goodman left during Week 2 with injuries and have not practiced all week. If they can't play it would be up to rookie cornerbacks Perrish Cox, a fifth-round draft pick from Oklahoma State, and Cassius Vaughn, who went undrafted out of Mississippi to slow down Peyton Manning and the high-powered Colts offense. Indianapolis ranks second in points and total yards, and first in passing yards. The Broncos' defense is not ranked in the top ten in any major category.
Analysis: The Broncos looked great against Seattle's suspect offense in Week 2, but Peyton Manning & Co. are a different story. Even if both Goodman and Bailey can play, it will still be a tall order slowing down the Colts. Indianapolis' offense is playing at a high level through two games against Houston and the Giants, and Manning is tough to defend for any defense. We don't recommend using them in Week 3 against the Colts.
News: The Denver Broncos might have to face Peyton Manning with a pair of rookie cornerbacks next weekend. Champ Bailey left the stadium on crutches with a right foot or ankle injury following Denver's 31-14 win over Seattle on Sunday night, and Andre Goodman left in the second half with an injured right thigh. Coach Josh McDaniels said Monday that Bailey didn't have any broken bones and he's hopeful both Bailey and Goodman will be able to play against Indianapolis on Sunday. If they can't, the Broncos would line up with rookie cornerbacks Perrish Cox, a fifth-round draft pick from Oklahoma State, and Cassius Vaughn, who went undrafted out of Mississippi.
Analysis: The Broncos looked great against Seattle's suspect offense in Week 2, but Peyton Manning & Co. are a different story. If you utilized this DST last week, consider going in a different direction in Week 3, with the Chargers, Redskins, Cardinals and Bengals DSTs as possible replacements.
News: The Broncos might have to face Peyton Manning with a pair of rookie cornerbacks next weekend. Cox had an interception Sunday and Vaughn recovered a muffed punt.
Analysis: The Broncos need Bailey and Goodman to be healthy for the matchup with the Colts. But even if Bailey and Goodman are active the Broncos DST would not be worth using in Week 3. Indianapolis' offense is playing at a high level through two games against Houston and the Giants, and Peyton Manning is tough to defend for any defense. We consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 option in Week 3 with or without their starting cornerbacks.
News: Denver held Seattle to 14 points and 342 total yards of offense on Sunday. They also intercepted QB Matt Hasselbeck three times and recovered a fumble. Hasselbeck was intercepted by Champ Bailey after a Justin Forsett touchdown was negated because of a holding penalty. After the game Bailey (foot) left the locker room on crutches. He appeared to suffer the injury in the fourth quarter, according to The Denver Post. It happens, Bailey said. I should be all right, though.
Analysis: Denver has a much tougher task ahead of them as Peyton Manning and the Colts visit the Mile High city in Week 3. With Bailey's status up in the air, the Broncos will have a tough time matching up with all of Indy's offensive weapons. Despite playing well in Week 2, Fantasy owners should look at other options in Week 3.
News: Heading into Week 2 against Seattle, Denver's defense is gauging what they will have to deal with. "They're going to try a lot more quick passes, come up to the ball quickly and try to confuse you a lot more," DE Justin Bannan said of the challenges the Seahawks will present. "Jacksonville was more straightforward with everything." The Broncos also have a player that knows the Seahawks system well. A few weeks ago, DE Kevin Vickerson was prepping with Seattle. On Sunday, he faces the team that cut him. I know them. I know what theyre doing, know their schemes and know what they dont like and have seen what gets them, he said.
Analysis: Denver hosts Seattle, a team that racked up just 242 total yards of offense in Week 1 against San Francisco. The defense recorded one sack and didn't force a turnover against the Jaguars, but the one thing they won't have to face in Week 2 is an elite running back. Seattle rushed for just 77 yards between their group of backs, so Denver isn't likely to allow 134 yards on the ground again. Fantasy owners should consider Denver's DST in deeper formats in Week 2.
News: The Broncos DST gave up 24 points, 299 yards and three passing touchdowns to the Jaguars in a Week 1 loss Sunday. Denver did not record a turnover and made just one sack.
Analysis: The Broncos defense was dealt a huge blow this offseason when stud DL Elvis Dumervil went down with an injury, and it really showed late in Sunday's defeat as they struggled to get pressure on QB David Garrard. Denver returns home to face the Seahawks in Week 2. That's a decent matchup, but this unit isn't one to get very excited over at the moment, so only start them in deeper Fantasy formats if you really have to.
News: The Broncos DST, which looked awful in the preseason and lost stud DL Elvis Dumervil to injury, will try to shake that disappointment off when they visit Jacksonville in Week 1. Denver last faced Jacksonville in 2008, a game which the Jags won 24-17. Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns in that contest.
Analysis: The Broncos ranked seventh in total yards allowed in 2009, but the loss of Dumervil is a huge one, as he was really the cog that made their pass rush run. Despite the fact they're in a pretty weak division, this unit was overlooked in most Fantasy drafts this offseason, and while this matchup isn't horrible, the Broncos DST should only be considered in very deep formats for Week 1 and until they prove worthy of more consideration.
News: The Broncos faced a harsh reality on Friday when they decided it was best to place DL Elvis Dumervil on injured reserve because of a pectoral injury. "We mutually agreed this was the best thing to do, Dumervil told The Denver Post. I just felt like I still have a lot of my career in front of me, and I still have so much Im going to accomplish that it would be better to make sure I get this right and not risk re-injuring by rushing back. I didnt want to go back out there with this hanging over my head and playing hesitant. I want to thank all the fans for their kind words through all this. I also ask them to make sure they continue to support the team. I think were going to have a good team this year.
Analysis: Dumervil had surgery in August in hopes he would be back by mid-November, but it just didn't play out that way. The disappointing news also comes after Dumervil, who led the NFL in sacks last season, signed a mega deal this offseason. Now, the Broncos must make up for his absence. "We have players who will step up, Dumervil said. Robert (Ayers) had a nice preseason as did a couple other players. We have a great coaching staff that will do a good job coming up with creative ways to apply pressure. Ill be around. Ill be around the facility, helping out anyway I can. The Broncos DST remains a reserve Fantasy option heading into the season. Dumervil should only be held onto in long-term keeper leagues.
News: The Denver defense put on quite a show during Sunday's 34-17 preseason win against the Steelers. The Broncos held the Steelers' starters to just one field goal through 2 1/2 quarters. Pittsburgh didn't score a touchdown until nearly 10 minutes left in the game. Denver also put a ton of pressure on the Pittsburgh quarterbacks. Denver forced three interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. The defense also posted three sacks, including two from Robert Ayers, who is trying to replace Elvis Dumervil, who could be out for the season with a pectoral injury.
Analysis: The Denver defense came into Sunday dead last in the preseason in total defense (400.5 ypg). It was also second to last in scoring defense (29.0 ppg). It was nice the Broncos put on a strong display against Pittsburgh, but we can't look too much into it. QB Ben Roethlisberger played only two series and Denver mostly faced QB Dennis Dixon, who doesn't have a ton of NFL game experience under his belt. The Denver defense got off to a strong start in 2009 before faltering down the stretch. Coordinator Mike Nolan has since been replaced by Don Martindale. Denver also has to cope with the loss of Dumervil. Look to the Broncos DST at best as a No. 2 option.
News:The Denver Post reports Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil is expected to have surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn pectoral muscle. He could be out for the entire season, if the doctors find the damage to be too significant. Broncos head team physician Ted Schlegel is set to perform the surgery.
Analysis: Dumervil, who led the NFL with 17 sacks in 2009, is just another casualty of the long preseason. Without Dumervil, the Broncos are going to have to rely on guys like Jarvis Moss, Mario Haggan and second-year player Robert Ayers to get that job done. The Broncos DST was a borderline Fantasy option to begin with and Dumervil's absence doesn't help. Don't plan on drafting Dumervil in any Fantasy IDP league.
News: NFL Network is among those reporting that Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil has suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will miss at least four months. Dumervil had the injury during a one-on-one drill in camp on Aug. 4. The team might opt to put him on injured reserve, ending his season. Dumervil had 17 of the Broncos' 39 sacks in 2009 -- no one else on the team had more than five. Coach Josh McDaniels said there are no immediate plans to address the roster in the wake of Elvis Dumervil's torn pectoral muscle. The most likely scenario appears to be shifting Mario Haggan from inside to outside LB and using Jarvis Moss as a pass rusher.
Analysis: This is a crushing blow for the Broncos defense -- Dumervil was easily the Broncos' best pass rusher and without him they're going to have to rely on guys like Haggan, Moss and second-year player Robert Ayers to get that job done. Even with their solid secondary, if the Broncos don't have a good enough pass rush, opponents will eat them alive. We do not recommend the Broncos DST as anything more than a potential one-week replacement during the season. Don't draft them.
News: Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil was injured during Wednesday's practice, according to the Denver Post. He left the field with head trainer Steve Antonopulos, holding his right arm tight to his chest. Dumervil was hurt during a one-on-one pass rushing drill.
Analysis: Dumervil flourished in Denver's new 3-4 defense during 2009, recording a league-leading 17 sacks, accounting for 44 percent of their team total. Take away his production and the Broncos could have serious trouble getting pressure on opposing passers. Even with Dumervil the Broncos DST was no more than a No. 2 Fantasy unit; without him they would likely be irrelevant to Fantasy owners.
News: Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil has signed his restricted free-agent tender of $3.168 million. Dumervil finished with 17 sacks in 2009 and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. He joined the team for minicamp over the weekend despite not having yet signed his tender. Dumervil said he understands that football "has a business side to it" and that his "stats speak for themselves."
Analysis: It's good to know that Dumervil is back with the Broncos as he'll be their premier pass rusher. He should total plenty of sacks again this season, helping a front seven that needs all the help they can get. There's potential for the Broncos DST to be a usable Fantasy option this season but you're better off passing on them on Draft Day and circling back for them when they have a good matchup during the season.
News: The Denver Broncos continued beefing up their defensive line, signing unrestricted free agents Jamal Williams and Jarvis Green on Tuesday. Green, who packs 285 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame, is well versed in the 3-4 alignment that coach Josh McDaniels implemented in Denver. Last season, Green had 47 tackles in 13 games, including 12 starts. Williams is equally verse -- he was the run-stuffing anchor of the San Diego Chargers' defensive line. He injured an arm in last season's opener and missed the rest of the year.
Analysis: Green and Williams should help the Broncos' defense against the run quite a bit, but they're still a ways from being a quality DST for Fantasy purposes. They're worth a look off waivers during the season, though.
News: The Denver Broncos and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan have agreed to part ways. Nolan, who engineered the Broncos' switch to a 3-4 defensive alignment, was head coach Josh McDaniels' first hire. McDaniels lined up Nolan to help revamp what had been a deplorable defense. "I have great respect for Mike and wish him success in the future," McDaniels said in a statement released Monday by the team.
Analysis: The Broncos will be searching for their fifth defensive coordinator in five seasons, but they might not search for long as the Patriots recently parted ways with their coordinator, Dean Pees. Speculation is that Pees will join McDaniels in Denver and lead their defense in 2010. That has yet to be determined, but for now the Broncos DST is no better than a top-end No. 2 option heading into 2010.
News: The Denver run defense had no answer for Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles on Sunday in a 44-24 loss in the season finale. Charles finishes the game with a Chiefs-record 259 rushing yards, scoring two of three Kansas city rushing TDs. The Broncos were better against the pass, limiting Kyle Orton to only 207 yards on 13 for 24 passing with an interception and no TD passes. Tim Castille also threw and interception on a halfback pass. Two of the TDs scored against the Broncos in the game came on pick-sixes by the Chiefs defense.
Analysis: This was a pathetic performance from the Broncos defense with the playoffs on the line. The defense was much better this season under new coach Josh McDaniels, but this game was not encouraging heading into 2010. The Broncos DST should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day in 2010.
News:David Akers kicked a 28-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining, lifting the Eagles to a 30-27 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 16. Kyle Orton rallied the Broncos from a 27-10 deficit in the third quarter, but Donovan McNabb led the Eagles on a winning drive in the final minutes. Rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin set up Akers' kick with an outstanding, 27-yard catch along the sideline to the Broncos 13. The catch initially was ruled incomplete, but it was overturned after replays showed Maclin kept both feet inbound while making a diving reception. Philadelphia torched Denver for 394 yards. The Broncos had four sacks and forced three turnovers (two fumbles).
Analysis: The Broncos have been mired in a three-game losing streak and the defense hasn't helped much. They have allowed 20 or more points in each loss. We figured they would struggle against Philly and the Denver defense did just that. Denver is still in the playoff hunt and has a lot to play for in Week 17 against the Chiefs, so the Denver DST might be considered a sleeper option. Denver destroyed K.C., 44-13, in Week 13.
News: The Broncos allowed 20 points in a 20-19 loss to the Raiders in Week 15. They allowed 343 yards of net offense and forced two fumbles in the game. They had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Broncos remain a viable play in most leagues based on matchups and they'll have a tough one in Week 16 at Philadelphia. Consider them at best a low-end No. 1 option for that matchup against one of the better offense in the NFL.
News: The Broncos allowed 28 points and 312 yards of offense in Week 14 at Indianapolis, but they did intercept three passes by QB Peyton Manning. They did not have a sack in the game.
Analysis: The Broncos defense had a poor first half, but they settled down in the second half and allowed their offense to stage somewhat of a rally in a game they ultimately lost 28-16. They did not get to Manning much, but they did rattle him enough to intercept three passes. Manning did have the last laugh with four TD passes and the win, however. The Broncos have a favorable matchup in Week 15 against a weak Raiders offense.
News: The Broncos DST held Kansas City to 13 points and 222 yards in a Week 13 rout. Denver finished with two interceptions, two sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Analysis: After going through a little rough patch in early November, the Broncos seemed to have figured things out again lately. In Week 14 though, things will get really tough as Denver heads to Indianapolis. If you have another capable DST with a better matchup, you should think about going with them, although the Broncos might still be worth a shot.
News: The Broncos defense was great against the Giants in Week 12 on Thanksgiving, allowing merely two Lawrence Tynes field goals in a 26-6 win. Eli Manning was limited to 230 yards passing and an interception by Andre' Goodman. On the ground, the Giants mustered only 57 yards on 16 carries. The Broncos created three total turnovers in the game, with Brian Dawkins and D.J. Williams recovering fumbles. Manning was sacked three times in the game, with Dumervil getting two of them.
Analysis: The Broncos defense had been lackluster in recent weeks, but looked much better on Thursday against a potentially dangerous Giants offense. Hopefully this solid performance will lead to another big game against a weak Kansas City offense Week 13. Think of the Broncos as a No. 2 Fantasy unit for that game.
News: The Broncos' defensive struggles continued against the Chargers in Week 11. They allowed 32 points on 348 yards, going without a sack or turnover of any kind.
Analysis: The Broncos DST was on fire over the first six weeks, routinely picking up 3-5 sacks while holding teams to less than 20 points. But since the Broncos' bye in Week 7, their DST has come back down to earth and now looks like nothing more than a matchups type. Think of it as a No. 2 option against the Giants in Week 12.
News: The Denver Broncos lost at Washington in Week 10, 27-17. The Broncos DST could not stop the normally mediocre Washington offense and gave up 388 total yards to the 'Skins. Denver finished with three sacks of quarterback Jason Campbell in the game and otherwise did not force a single turnover.
Analysis: It was a dismal performance from the Broncos DST to say the least. The Broncos DST had been a league-leading unit until the past three games and that includes a random defensive touchdown. Hopefully they turn things around but if they could do nothing against the Redskins, than they should really have trouble Week 11 against the Chargers. You should find a better Fantasy DST for Week 11.
News: The Denver defense did not look up the challenge of facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night of Week 9. The Broncos DST allowed 375 yards of offense to the Steelers as Pittsburgh upended the Broncos at Mile High, 28-10. The lone bright spot for the Broncos DST was a 54-yard defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery by Robert Ayers. Defensive lineman Kenny Peterson forced the fumble on a sack of Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben was picked once in the game by Andre' Goodman but Champ Bailey was beaten by Santonio Holmes consistently. Denver managed the two turnovers forced and sacked Big Ben three times.
Analysis: The Broncos picked up the defensive touchdown, three sacks and two turnovers so the game wasn't a total loss for the DST. The Broncos DST had been a league-leading unit until the past two games. Hopefully they turn things around. They shouldn't have a problem at Washington in Week 10. The Redskins' offense is dismal. We like the Broncos DST as a No. 1 Fantasy unit for that game.
News: Denver is no longer among the land of the undefeated. The Broncos were beaten on Sunday of Week 8 at Baltimore, 30-7. The Broncos DST could not stop the Ravens, which racked up 292 yards of offense. The Broncos could sack QB Joe Flacco just twice in the game and Flacco and the Ravens did not turn the ball over.
Analysis: The Broncos DST had been a league-leading unit until this Week 8 loss. Denver couldn't do anything right defensively and on special teams against the Ravens. Denver plays Pittsburgh in Week 9 and we think they'll have a much better day. Consider the Broncos DST as a No. 1 unit for Week 9 and hope they bounce back.
News: With defensive coordinator Mike Nolan leading the resurgence, the Broncos have transformed into a top-notch defensive squad, allowing a league-low 11 points a game. That after so many seasons in such disarray, blowing through one defensive coordinator after another. But the players have quickly caught on to Nolan's switch to a 3-4 look. It's also opened things up for defensive end/linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who's utilizing his long wing span and low leverage to shed offensive linemen and lead the league with 10 sacks.
Analysis: If their defensive wasn't impressive enough, the Broncos DST got two touchdowns on special teams Week 6 at San Diego. They've managed to hold up against offensive teams like the Cowboys and Chargers, emerging as one of the more usable units in Fantasy. The Broncos have a bye in Week 7 and a tough matchup Week 8 at Baltimore, but the Broncos DST is a viable option for that game anyway.
News: The Denver Broncos defeated the San Diego Chargers in San Diego on Monday night of Week 6. The Broncos were impressive in their 34-23 win. The Broncos DST limited the Chargers to 311 yards and forced QB Philip Rivers into one of his worst games of the season. That said, the story was the return game. The Broncos' return man, Eddie Royal, brought back a kick return and a punt return for touchdowns. He scored on a 93-yard kickoff return in the 1st quarter and added a 71-yard punt return for a TD for good measure in the 2nd quarter. Denver added four sacks on Rivers and forced him to fumble three times, recovering one.
Analysis: Denver did a good job limiting the Chargers in their own house but no matter what the defense did, the DST excelled because of Royal. Royal was electric and makes this DST an exciting one to own. The Broncos DST should be considered a viable Fantasy DST unit most weeks but not Week 7. That is because they are on bye. They return Week 8 at Baltimore.
News: The Broncos defense shut out the mighty Patriots in the second half in Week 5 and that allowed the offense to rally back from a 10-point halftime deficit during a 20-17 overtime win. The Broncos forced Tom Brady to be patient and pick underneath, the way he has most of this season. He went 19 for 33 for 215 yards, but only 63 of those came in the second half during which the Denver defense lived up to its billing. New England managed just 305 yards. Denver came away with one sack and one turnover (fumble recovery).
Analysis: The Denver defense has allowed a grand total of 43 points in five games -- one of the best starts in the league's history. And add this to the resume: Denver handed Brady his first overtime loss. He fell to 7-1. The Broncos definitely have new life under head coach Josh McDaniels. Denver does have a tough matchup in Week 6 against the Chargers, but the Broncos DST can be considered a viable Fantasy option.
News: The Broncos, who allowed only three points and 137 yards to the Raiders last week, were similarly dominant against a more talented Cowboys team in Week 4. They allowed 10 points on 315 yards, recording five sacks and one interception. They also recovered a fumble.
Analysis: The Broncos DST, which had been one of the more unappealing Fantasy units in recent years, has switched to 3-4 scheme this year and delivered fantastic results. It's worth adding in Fantasy, especially since it plays in such a weak division, but it's more like a No. 2 Fantasy option in Week 5 since it has a tough matchup against the Patriots.
News: The Broncos and their 3-4 defense shut down the hosting Raiders in Week 3, allowing three points on only 137 yards. They also had three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Broncos DST has made a quick conversion to a 3-4 scheme and has become a much better Fantasy unit as a result. It faces a tough test Week 4 against the Cowboys, so you might want to avoid it, but keep it on your radar as a possible sleeper in a more favorable matchup.
News: Josh McDaniels' decision to blow up the Denver Broncos' porous secondary and rebuild it through an influx of free agents has benefited the team through tighter coverage and a tightening bond among its defensive backs. The first-year Broncos coach brought in safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill, along with cornerback Andre Goodman, leaving eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, who was injured much of last season, as the lone holdover. The foursome has a combined 42 years of NFL experience playing for 11 different teams but the group has come together to be at the center of Denver's defensive turnaround in the opening weeks of the season. Going into Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders, the Broncos, who allowed 448 points last season and ranked at or near the bottom of virtually every major defensive category, lead the league in scoring defense (6.5 points per game). They also have the AFC's best turnover ratio, generating five takeaways (three interceptions and two fumbles) to one giveaway (fumbled kickoff).
Analysis: Dawkins, who became one of the league's premier safeties during his first 13 seasons, all in Philadelphia, said the communication among the secondary, from practice to adjustments made in the heat of a game have been central to the unit's budding chemistry and solidified play. McDaniels said the foursome's level of experience and the players' willingness to engage one another and embrace the challenge of coming together to forge a viable secondary convinced him early on that the radical makeover carried low risks and the potential for major rewards. The challenge now is to keep it going against the Raiders, who have two fleet-footed rookies starting at wide receiver in Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy, along with strong-armed if sometimes inaccurate quarterback in JaMarcus Russell. "They've got speed, young, fresh legs and a quarterback who can really fling it," Bailey said. "We know he's capable of putting points on the board and getting the ball downfield." Consider the Broncos DST a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST in Week 3.
News: The Broncos defense shut down the Browns' offense pretty well Week 2 in a 27-6 win. The Browns racked up a total of only 54 yards on the ground on 21 rushing opportunities. Brady Quinn was limited to only 161 yards passing in an 18 for 31 performance. Elvis Dumervil also tied the team record for sacks, getting to Quinn four times. Darcel McBath intercepted a pass and Andra Davis led the team with 10 tackles.
Analysis: The Broncos' DST has had some favorable matchups to open the season, facing the Bengals and the Browns. There's no doubt that the Broncos have improved defensively this season and they have a good matchup Week 3 against the Raiders. Think of them as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 3 against Oakland.
News: In the Broncos' Week 1 win at the Bengals, the DST pitched in for three sacks and two interceptions, including an interception by Tony Scheffler on the game's last play. They also held the Bengals' offense to seven points and nearly pitched a shutout before a late fourth-quarter score by RB Cedric Benson.
Analysis: This was a nice effort by the Broncos' defense, and they might be considered usable again in Week 2 when the Browns come to Mile High. If you're in need of a DST, consider these Broncos.
News: The Broncos needed more muscle and hustle in their defensive line, and they knew right where to go to get it, acquiring versatile end Le Kevin Smith from New England for a fifth-round pick on Monday. Smith is a versatile 6-foot-3, 308-pound player from Nebraska who appeared in 28 games as a backup the last two seasons with the Patriots, who drafted him in the sixth round in 2006. McDaniels is familiar with Smith from his days as an assistant on Bill Belichick's staff in New England. "We're just trying to improve the football team in every way we can," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said. "If there's a player at any position that could help us or we feel could improve our depth or talent, at any position, we would take a look at him. He certainly is a guy that we've evaluated and feel like he could fit what we're doing."
Analysis: The Broncos' run defense was manhandled by the 49ers in their first preseason game, so Smith might be able to help shore up the unit. He'll at least provide depth, which is important. Still, the Broncos DST isn't worth using or drafting in Fantasy play.
News: Broncos coach Josh McDaniels on Friday would not give a timetable for CB Champ Bailey to join the team for full-squad workouts. Bailey said he feels 100 percent following offseason elbow surgery and a groin injury that dogged him last season.
Analysis: We expect Bailey to be ready for the start of the season, but he's not a No. 3 DB in IDP leagues. He has the potential to return as a No. 2 option, but he needs to get healthy and get on the field. Bailey's presence is a key for the Broncos DST, but the unit is still a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Broncos have made defense a high priority after ranking at or near the bottom in every major defensive category last year, when they surrendered 448 points. They've re-tooled their secondary, bringing in Andre Goodman, Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. They also added depth at defensive line with Darrell Reid, a special teams standout who can play defensive end or linebacker in the 3-4 system, and at linebacker with the addition of 3-4 schemer Andra Davis.
Analysis: All signs point to this unit going to the 3-4 sooner rather than later. They're improving, but until they get the big guys up front and the right alignment of linebackers to go with them, they're going to be a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. Their special teams is also not a strength.
News: The Denver Broncos have signed seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, who spent his entire 13-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles. New Broncos coach JoshMcDaniels, the New England Patriots offensive coordinator before he was hired to replace Mike Shanahan in Denver, envisions his new veteran safety playing a role similar to what Rodney Harrison had in New England in recent seasons.
Analysis: Although Dawkins turns 36 next season and is clearly on the downside of his career, he brings a hard-hitting style and leadership qualities coveted by McDaniels. Dawkins figures he has at least a couple more good seasons in him. He started all 16 games last season for the third time in four years and recorded 75 tackles, three sacks, six forced fumbles and an interception. The Broncos, who gave up an eye-popping 448 points last season while ranking at or near the bottom in every major defensive category, ran through six different free safeties after saying goodbye last summer to John Lynch and Hamzah Abdullah in hopes Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel were the answers. They were not. Expect the Broncos defense to have a slew of personnel changes in the coming months, and also expect this unit to take a while to become a very good unit. Consider the Broncos DST a decent one-week replacement not worth drafting in 2009.
News: The Denver Post is among those reporting Tuesday that ex-49ers head coach Mike Nolan will be named defensive coordinator of the Broncos. Expected to work with head coach Josh McDaniels, the Broncos will likely transform their defense from a 4-3 base to a 3-4 scheme. Additionally, the knowledge between McDaniels, who was familiar with the Patriots 3-4 defense, and Nolan, who has coordinated the scheme in Baltimore and San Francisco, should make for a mostly seamless transition. "We're going to evaluate the people, we're going to evaluate the scheme, and we're going to evaluate the coaches we bring in here," McDaniels said. "We're going to determine what the best way to go about winning championships is. That's our goal and our focus, and it's not just specific to the defensive side. But certainly we can improve in that area as well."
Analysis: Expect the Broncos defense to have a slew of personnel changes in the coming months, and also expect this unit to take a while to become a very good unit. Consider the Broncos DST a decent one-week replacement not worth drafting in 2009.
News: The Broncos have parted ways with head coach Mike Shanahan, likely signaling a huge rehauling of the team. The Broncos had a three-game lead with three games to play this season and lost the division to the Chargers. The defensive unit was atrocious and was the downfall not only for the season but likely for Shanahan's release as well.
Analysis: This is unchartered territory for the Broncos, whose offense will likely stay aggressive but whose defense will see a huge change. That's a good thing since the Broncos DST was a complete bust last season.
News: The Broncos DST was terrible Sunday at San Diego in a 52-21 loss. Denver had two sacks but no turnovers and gave up 289 rushing yards. Chad Jackson had eight kickoff returns for 161.6 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST needs help heading into 2009. They need to improve against the run and the pass, but it's unlikely to turn around quick enough to make them a viable unit in Fantasy leagues next season. Ignore them in all leagues.
News: The Broncos allowed 275 yards of offense and 30 points in Week 16 against Buffalo. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Broncos got back Champ Bailey in this game, but still did not look like a very useful Fantasy unit. They will be playing for their playoff lives in Week 17 at San Diego against a tough Chargers offense and for that reason are not a recommended unit.
News: The Broncos DST allowed 400 total yards and 30 points to the Panthers in Week 15 on Sunday. 253 came through the air and the other 147 were on the ground.
Analysis: Champ Bailey was out for the second week and that seemed to hurt the Denver secondary a great deal. Denver has one of the most porous defenses in the league and not recommended for Week 16 against Buffalo.
News: The Broncos allowed just 260 yards of offense in Week 14 against Kansas City, giving up 17 points. They did not force a turnover and had only one sack in the game.
Analysis: This is about as good a matchup as a defense can face against a very bland offensive team like the Chiefs and the Broncos did not turn that into much from a Fantasy perspective. They were once again without Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams and Marlon McCree and continue to be short handed. There is no real reason to consider them for Week 15 at Carolina.
News: The Broncos scored on a 23-yard fumble recovery in the first quarter in Week 13 at the Jets and held the Jets to 17 points. They allowed 383 yards of total offense and also intercepted one pass in the game. They notched two sacks in the game.
Analysis: The matchup coming into the game game did not appear too promising, so most Fantasy owners did not get to take advantage of this semi-productive game. The Broncos gave up 31 points to the lowly Raiders offense a week earlier, so it is justified. Despite this strong game, consider the Broncos defense only out of desperation for Week 14 against Kansas City.
News: The Broncos allowed 31 points and 318 yards of total offense in Week 12 at home against Oakland. They did not force a turnover and did not have a sack in the game.
Analysis: It does not get much lower than this for a Fantasy defense. If they can't produce numbers useful for Fantasy owners with such a promising matchup against a weak defense, they should definitely not be used against the Jets' tough offense in Week 13.
News: The Broncos defense had one of its best performances of the season Week 11 at Atlanta. It still wasn't particularly notable, though, as it allowed 20 points on 364 yards, recording one interception.
Analysis: The Broncos have one of the most miserable defensive units in the league, but it slowed the Falcons down enough to pull out a victory. Normally, it should just remain on waivers in the Fantasy, but the Broncos DST actually has a nice matchup Week 12 against the Raiders. Consider it a sleeper just this once.
News: The Broncos have declared three of their best defenders -- LB D.J. Williams (knee), LB Nate Webster (knee) and DB Champ Bailey (groin) -- inactive for Week 11 at Atlanta. They had already ruled out Williams and Webster earlier in the week.
Analysis: Williams, Webster and Bailey might be the best three defensive players on the Broncos, with Williams and Webster especially valuable in Fantasy because of their tackles, so the already poor Broncos DST might struggle more than usual this week. Reserve it along with these three players.
News: The Broncos defense had another uninspiring performance Week 10 at Cleveland. It gave up 30 points on 399 yards without recording a sack or an interception. It did recover a fumble, though.
Analysis: The Broncos can seemingly only win shootouts in part because their defense is one of the worst in the league. The Broncos DST is never worth starting in Fantasy, not even Week 11 at Atlanta.
News: Denver was at home against the Dolphins in Week 9. Denver lost 26-17. The Broncos DST allowed Miami to rack up 341 yards in the game and they didn't even need the wildcat offense to do it. Denver forced just one turnover, an interception from Karl Paymah, who was starting for injured Champ Bailey, and sacked Chad Pennington just three times. Jarvis Moss got two.
Analysis: The Broncos are not to be trusted. Not only are they awful against the pass -- especially without Bailey -- but they are bad against the run. Denver goes to Cleveland on Thursday night in Week 10 and should not be starting in Fantasy. Don't trust them.
News: The CBS affiliate in Denver reports that Broncos star CB Champ Bailey will miss anywhere from four-to-six weeks with a groin tear. His brother, Broncos LB Boss Bailey is out for the year with a knee injury that will require microfracture surgery. Both Bailey brothers got hurt at New England in Week 7, arguably one of the worst games by a Broncos defense in years.
Analysis: The Broncos is not to be trusted. Not only were they awful against the pass once Bailey was hurt, but they were bad against the run. Denver is off in Week 8 before playing Miami in Week 9. Don't trust them.
News: The Broncos had another miserable defensive performance at New England in Week 7. They allowed 41 points on 404 yards. On a positive note, they did record six sacks.
Analysis: Six sacks won't save a performance like the one the Broncos DST had. It continues to look like one of the easiest units to exploit in the league, making it virtually useless in Fantasy even when it has a favorable matchup. The Broncos have a bye in Week 8, but don't bother using the Broncos DST in Week 9 against the Dolphins.
News: Playing their best all-around game of the season, the Jaguars got superb performances from quarterback David Garrard and running back Maurice Jones-Drew, plus three takeaways by their defense in a 24-17 win over the bumbling Broncos on a cold, misty Sunday. The Broncos defense once again struggled to stop the opposition, as Jacksonville rolled up 416 yards, including 261 through the air. The Broncos were able to get two fumble recoveries, but didn't pick off a pass and had two sacks.
Analysis: has really been another up-and-down season for the Broncos defense and it appears as though they could find themselves with another defensive coordinator in 2009 if they don't shape up. With such inconsistency, the Broncos DST is a basically just a bye-week Fantasy replacement heading into Week 7. The Broncos play the Patriots.
News: The Broncos defense held the Bucs to just 13 points and 307 yards during a Week 5 win. It was the first time since Week 1 against the Raiders that Denver allowed less than 20 points. Denver got three sacks and DB Champ Bailey knocked out starting QB Brian Griese with a shoulder injury in the third quarter. Marcus Thomas had a pick off QB Jeff Garcia.
Analysis: It has really been another up-and-down season for the Broncos defense and it appears as though they could find themselves with another defensive coordinator in 2009 if they don't shape up. With such inconsistency, the Broncos DST is a basically just a bye-week Fantasy replacement heading into Week 6. Denver hosts the Jaguars.
News: Denver actually lost to previously winless Kansas City in Week 4. The Chiefs racked up 370 yards and 33 points on the Broncos DST, which has been awful this season. Denver got to quarterback Damon Huard just once and couldn't pick him off one time. Denver recorded one fumble recovery, but that is it as far as turnovers.
Analysis: The Broncos are not a recommended Fantasy DST. They allow far too many yards and points despite being a winning team. The one week to start them should have been Week 4, but they were just as awful then, too. They play the Buccaneers at home in Week 5 and we suggest keeping them on the waiver wire.
News: The Broncos played well enough to defeat the New Orleans Saints in Week 3 on Sunday but the Broncos DST was not so great. They allowed the Saints to score 32 points and amass over 500 yards of offense. The Broncos only forced one turnover, a Reggie Bush fumble, and only sacked Drew Brees one time.
Analysis: The Broncos are not a recommended Fantasy DST. They allow far too many yards and points despite being a winning team. That said, the one week to start them would come in Week 4. They meet the Kansas City Chiefs and they have one of the worst offenses in football.
News: The Denver Broncos defeated the San Diego Chargers on Sunday but the Broncos DST allowed many yards and points. The Chargers racked up 456 yards of offense en route to putting up 38 points on the Broncos defense. The Broncos intangibles weren't very good, either, as they only managed to sack Chargers QB Phillip Rivers once, attributed to John Engelberger. All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey did pick up one interception, but it was the only one for Denver.
Analysis: Denver's defense did not look good in Week 2 and they face the Saints in Week 3. Expect another high-scoring shootout against New Orleans and don't start the Broncos DST.
News: The Denver Broncos overhauled their defense for just this occasion -- stopping LaDainian Tomlinson. The San Diego Chargers tailback has made a living out of shredding the Broncos, rushing for 1,222 yards and 15 touchdowns in 14 games against them. That's why Denver brought in new safeties (Marquand Manuel, Marlon McCree), added more beef up front (DeWayne Robertson) and shuffled around their linebackers, to be more effective against the run. And Tomlinson will be the litmus test. He'll quickly show whether the Broncos are indeed improved against the run -- an area in which they ranked near the bottom of the league in 2007. "It's a different ballgame now," Broncos cornerback Karl Paymah said.
Analysis: The Broncos certainly hope so after being outscored 64-6 in two meetings last season. The Chargers rolled up 361 yards on the ground, with Michael Turner, who's now in Atlanta, gaining 147 yards in the first meeting, and Tomlinson rushing for 107 on Christmas Eve. "It's embarrassing what they've done to us," defensive lineman Ebenezer Ekuban said. "We definitely have something to prove, we want to be competitive. Whenever you kick our tails like that, we're definitely going to put forth some extra effort to try to make sure it doesn't happen again." The Broncos held the Raiders to 14 points and 317 yards in Week 1. They get a true test Week 2, s consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 Fantasy option Week 2 against the Chargers.
News: The Broncos defense held the Raiders off the scoreboard for three periods Week 1, but Oakland scored twice in the fourth quarter to erase Denver's shutout. The defense still did a solid job in a 41-14 win. Denver got sacks from D.J. Williams and Kenny Peterson while limiting Oakland to 317 yards.
Analysis: Denver did not have a memorable 2007 and made some personnel changes on defense. Thus far, the results are favorable. If they can keep it, the Broncos DST might emerge as a viable Fantasy option. Consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 Fantasy option Week 2 against the Chargers.
News:Niko Koutouvides proved to be the perfect motivator for Nate Webster. When the Denver Broncos signed Koutouvides to a three-year, $7.5 million contract in March, Webster knew he was in for some competition at middle linebacker. "Signing Niko just made me lock in and focus a little more coming into camp," Webster said. The proof came Monday when coach Mike Shanahan said Webster had won the starting job. "I think you spur everybody on by signing people that can play," Shanahan said. "We know that Niko is a good linebacker, he's good on special teams. Nate had his best offseason program that he's had."
Analysis: The signing of Koutouvides allowed the Broncos to move D.J. Williams from middle linebacker to the weak side, his natural position. Denver also signed free agent Boss Bailey to play on the strong side. Webster wasn't about to be bumped to a backup. "Mike is a man of his word," Webster said. "He said it was going to be a fair battle and may the best man win. Clearly that's what he said and that's what he's done." Webster, in his ninth season, moved back to his natural spot in the middle after playing on the strong side last year. He said his background as a middle linebacker made a difference. Webster now has potential for a big year as a starting MLB, but still remains a low-end Fantasy LB at this time. The Broncos DST is still a No. 2 Fantasy option as well.
News: The Broncos defense allowed 281 yards of total offense while giving up 27 points in Friday's Week 3 preseason game against Green Bay. They picked up one sack, but did not record a turnover.
Analysis: The Broncos are trying to recover from a miserable 2007 season and Friday's game doesn't promote much of an improvement this year. Week 3 of the preseason is the only week in which teams gameplan and keep their regulars in deep into the game, so it's as close to a real gage as you'll get in the preseason. Consider the Broncos a low-end No. 2 defense.
News:Broncos CB Champ Bailey returned Monday after missing two weeks with a strained hamstring, reports the Denver Post. Bailey is expected to play Friday in the preseason game against Green Bay.
Analysis: It appears Bailey will be fine for the start of the season. Consider him a low-end No. 1 DB in IDP leagues this year.
News: Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan eased his grueling training camp routine this year in response to the NFL's reduced roster limits. It hasn't kept his players out of the training room. In the first seven snaps of Saturday night's 19-16 preseason loss at Houston, the Broncos lost starting linebacker Boss Bailey, their biggest free agent signing, with a sprained right ankle, and his backup, special teams ace Louis Green, with a concussion. Denver already had four key players sitting out in cornerback Champ Bailey (hamstring), safety Hamza Abdullah (groin) and defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (knee).
Analysis: Bailey left Reliant Stadium on crutches and Green wore a neck brace on the team's charter flight home. Boss Bailey said he suffered a low ankle sprain, which usually doesn't require as much recovery time as a high ankle sprain. X-rays were negative but he was sent for an MRI on Sunday. Shanahan said his new strongside linebacker might miss a couple of weeks. The Broncos focused on linebackers when they went about fixing a porous run defense in the offseason. They moved D.J. Williams from the middle to the weak side, his natural position, and signed Boss Bailey and Niko Koutouvides, who is battling Nate Webster for the starting job at middle linebacker. The Broncos are trying to recover from a miserable 2007 season defensively and all these injuries don't help. They still remain at best a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News:John Lynch's days with the Broncos appear to be over. The 16-year NFL safety met with coach Mike Shanahan on Wednesday and told Denver's KCNC-TV that Shanahan gave him permission to explore other opportunities. That could be playing for another team, or retiring to perhaps go into the broadcast booth. The Denver Post also reported the split. Lynch skipped a team meeting Tuesday night and was excused from Wednesday's workouts for what Shanahan termed personal reasons. Lynch was told he'd compete for a starting safety job when he took a pay cut this offseason. With the emergence of Marlon McCree, Lynch didn't play a single snap in the nickel or dime packages during the first week of training camp.
Analysis: Lynch is a solid locker room leader and still a decent defender, but obviously at the tail end of his career. With Marlon McCree taking over the SS spot, don't expect the Broncos DST to miss a beat. Of course, they were nothing more than a No. 2 option to begin with. Don't draft them if you can help it in standard-scoring leagues.
News: The hot seat? Sure. His comfort zone? You bet. Bob Slowik is settling in as Denver's third defensive boss in three years under coach Mike Shanahan and he doesn't have the time or the gumption to give his job security a second thought. "It's kind of like players. You don't tell them every day, 'Hey, if you don't start making plays or you're not getting the job done, you're not going to be here.' It's the NFL. They know that. Coaches know the same thing," Slowik said. Slowik wasn't sure if he'd ever have the chance to build a defense again after his last gig didn't go so well in Green Bay in 2004. He left the Packers after one forgettable season in charge of a defense that allowed a franchise record 37 touchdown passes and managed a measly eight interceptions.
Analysis: The Broncos made major changes in the offseason, signing free-agent linebackers Boss Bailey and Niko Koutouvides, which allows D.J. Williams to move from middle linebacker to the weak side, his natural position. They also signed safeties Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel and traded for defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to help bolster the front line, where a lot is expected from second-year players Jarvis Moss, Marcus Thomas and Tim Crowder, all of whom had big growing pains as rookies. "We've got a good nucleus," Slowik said. "But we've got a long ways to go. We're not close yet. But if we keep working with the attitude we have, we should improve." Consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into the season.
News: The Denver Broncos defense is ready to atone for last season. In 2007, the Broncos gave up 409 points, the fifth-most in the NFL. Only one AFC team, the 1-15 Dolphins, allowed more. The Broncos have made major changes, signing free-agent linebackers Boss Bailey and Niko Koutouvides and safeties Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel. They also traded for defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to help bolster the front line. Additionally, DE Jarvis Moss is ready to go. The defensive end broke his leg midway through the his rookie season last year, and two days into the Broncos' quarterback camp he's anxious to get back on the field. "It's not something to prove, just something inside of me that's ready to go play now," he said. "I just feel different. Mentally and physically, I feel great again. I'm ready to hit that first preseason game and hit the season just running and not slow down."
Analysis: The Broncos DST has a lot of well-known NFL names like Champ Bailey, Dre Bly, John Lynch and D.J. Williams, but they really disappointed a lot of owners last season. The additions should make them more prepared for the upcoming season (including rookie KR Eddie Royal), but it's best to consider them no better than a No. 2 Fantasy DST this summer. Don't draft them unless you're in a really deep league.
News: The Broncos acquired defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson from the Jets on Thursday for a conditional pick in the 2009 draft. Robertson, the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft from Kentucky, spent five inconsistent seasons with the Jets. He often seemed out of position in New York's 3-4 alignment.
Analysis: Robertson will be asked to be a run-plugger in the interior of the Broncos' defensive line, something he should find some success with. Robertson joins LBs Niko Koutouvides and Boss Bailey as new acquisitions for a very veteran Broncos defense. Treat them like a No. 2 DST in drafts this summer.
News: The Broncos on Thursday signed free agent linebacker Boss Bailey, the younger brother of perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey. Bailey will play strong side linebacker in Denver, and D.J. Williams will move back to the weak side after a year in the middle. Free agent Niko Koutouvides will get a chance to start at middle linebacker.
Analysis: Linebacker was a key weak spot for the Broncos in 2007, but we're not convinced they've solved it with Bailey and Koutouvides. The Broncos remain a No. 2 DST for this summer's action.
News: The Broncos have a new defensive coordinator in Bob Slowik, who will replace the departed Jim Bates. Slowik was the defensive backs coach in 2007. The Broncos had three defensive touchdowns in 2007, 14 interceptions, one safety, 33 sacks, 15 fumble recoveries and 21 forced fumbles. Slowik could have some tough decisions to make, with DB John Lynch possibly retiring, and the Broncos unsure about keeping D.J. Williams as an inside linebacker. On special teams, the Broncos got solid play out of Glenn Martinez, who had 14 punt returns for an 11.2-yard average and one touchdown and 15 kickoff returns for a 22.0-yard average. Andre Hall also had 19 kickoff returns for a 25.0-yard average.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what the Broncos do on defense, especially with Lynch and Williams. They need help at linebacker and some improvement on the defensive line. They have the best cornerback duo in Champ Bailey and Dre Bly, and Elvis Dumervil is a solid defensive lineman. Williams played well in the middle, but they might want him back outside to make more plays. Consider the Broncos DST a low-end No. 1 option in 2008.
News: The Broncos DST held Minnesota to 19 points, recovered two fumbles and totaled three sacks as Denver closed out their season with a 22-19 overtime win against the Vikings on Sunday afternoon.
Analysis: As a unit, the Broncos DST had their moments in 2007, but mostly it was a pretty disappointing season for them. They went from being owned in 97 percent of leagues in Week 1 to only 49 percent in Week 17, so that tells you all you need to know about their year.
News: The Broncos DST totaled two sacks and a forced fumble and recovery at San Diego in Week 16.
Analysis: The Broncos defense was run over by LaDainian Tomlinson and did little to stop Philip Rivers. That doesn't bode well for them with Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor and the Vikings coming to Mile High in Week 17. Consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 option in their season finale.
News: The Broncos defense turned in another lackluster performance during a Week 15 loss to the Texans. Denver allowed Houston to post 31 points, including four touchdowns, and 358 yards. They did not sack QB Sage Rosenfels once and managed just one turnover -- a Dre' Bly interception.
Analysis: The Broncos defense has been one of the most disappointing stories of the 2007 season. They have some of the best cornerbacks in the league, but they struggle against the run and just haven't been that great of a defensive unit in 2007. The Broncos DST remains a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 16 against the Chargers.
News: The Broncos DST held Kansas City to seven points and 127 yards (16 rushing) in Denver's 41-7 win over the Chiefs in Week 14. They added five sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Analysis: The Broncos DST's performance on Sunday was excellent, but you have to consider who they were playing. They face a slightly tougher task in Week 15 as they play at Houston, but should probably still be a No. 1 Fantasy DST unit for that game.
News: The Broncos DST will host the Chiefs in a divisional battle in Week 13. Kansas City ranks 30th in total offense, including 23rd through the air and 29th in the ground game. This team has thrown 16 interceptions and they have allowed 42 sacks, third-most in the league.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is ranked 27th in total defense, including ninth against the pass and 21st against the run. We recommend starting this DST unit in larger leagues for this matchup.
News: The Broncos DST gave up 372 total yards, including 175 yards on the ground, in Denver's 34-20 loss to the Raiders in Week 13. They did not make an interception or a sack, but did register a fumble recovery.
Analysis: When your are a DST getting destroyed by the Raiders, you know things are bad. Luckily, the Broncos face a pretty average offense in Week 14 in the form of the Chiefs and will have a chance to redeem themselves.
News: The Broncos DST had three sacks and an interception Sunday at Chicago. Andre Hall had one kickoff return for 14 yards, and Glenn Martinez had six kickoff returns for a 15.7-yard average and two punts for 5 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST should be considered a decent sleeper option in Week 13 at Oakland.
News: The Broncos defense fared predictably average against the Titans in Week 11, surrendering 20 points on 423 yards. It also had a sack, two interceptions and a recovered fumble. Its special teams, however, thrived, scoring a touchdown on an 80-yard punt return by Glenn Martinez in the first quarter. In total, the Broncos special teams had 106 return yards.
Analysis: The special teams score redeemed an otherwise bad performance. You almost never want to start the Broncos DST in Fantasy, but it has a sneaky good matchup Week 12 at Chicago if Rex Grossman starts for the Bears at quarterback. Still, we'd only recommend it for the contest in larger Fantasy leagues.
News: The Broncos DST will host the Tennessee Titans and their fourth-ranked running game Sunday in Week 11. The Titans' offense is ranked 17th overall, including a 29th-ranked passing offense.
Analysis: The Broncos DST ranks 24th overall, with an eighth-ranked passing defense and the 31st-best rushing defense. This is not a good Fantasy matchup for most leagues.
News: If you started the Broncos DST in Week 10, you were successful in a risky move. The Broncos DST scored a touchdown on a Nate Webster fumble return and totaled four sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles at Kansas City. The Broncos held the Chiefs to 245 passing yards and -- get this -- 67 rushing yards.
Analysis: This was the kind of dominant performance we expected from the Broncos DST all season but never got because they couldn't stop the run. Next week, they host the Titans, who are a very run-heavy offense. If the Broncos can keep up their run defense, they'll be an effective Fantasy DST. Consider them a low-end option for Week 11.
News: The Chiefs host Denver in an AFC West showdown Sunday in Week 10. These two teams split their games last year, but the Chiefs scores a total of just 25 points in both contests.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is ranked 26th in total defense this season, but they are getting a break since the Chiefs have little at quarterback and now Larry Johnson (foot) could be sidelined for the season. Despite this matchup, it's still tough to recommend starting them in Fantasy play this week.
News: The Broncos DST had one fumble recovery and one sack Sunday against Detroit. Glenn Martinez had one punt return for 4 yards and two kickoff returns for 41 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST will look to rebound in Week 10 against Kansas City. Consider them a low-end No. 2 option in deep leagues.
News: Denver travels to Ford Field to take on the seventh-ranked passing game of OC Mike Martz's Lions in Week 9. Detroit is ranked 26th on the ground, however.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is ranked 25th in total defense -- but they are sixth against the pass, with 14 sacks and six interceptions. They got beat up against Green Bay on some long pass plays, so expect them to bounce back in Week 9. Consider this DST unit a solid start in 12-team leagues, especially since the Lions have allowed a league-high 35 sacks.
News: The Broncos defense had a dreadful evening Week 8 against the Packers. It surrendered 19 points on 430 yards while not recording a sack or forcing a turnover of any sort. The Broncos special teams, meanwhile, gained 75 yards.
Analysis: In fairness, 82 of those yards came on a single Brett Favre pass in overtime. Still, the Broncos DST has been a staggering disappointment in Fantasy this season despite having the league's best cornerback tandem in Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly. Its situation won't improve Week 9 at Detroit, where it faces one of the league's most dynamic offenses. The Broncos DST might pick up more sacks than usual, but we project plenty of yards and points for the Lions. Keep the Broncos DST on waivers for the matchup.
News: Broncos DB Champ Bailey (quadriceps) is listed as questionable for Week 8 vs. Green Bay. He went through limited practice reps on Wednesday and Thursday. Bailey missed his first game of the season Week 7 against the Steelers and there is still some uncertainty heading into Monday night's game. "I feel it," Bailey told NFL.com on Friday. "When I feel it, it's really not good. I can play through some pain, but stretching and pulling it is one thing. It's still up in the air, but it's better than it was last week."
Analysis: The Broncos could really use Bailey as Brett Favre and the Packers roll into town. The Packers have the 11th-best offense, mostly due to Favre and his second-ranked passing game. The Packers are the worst team on the ground, averaging only 65.7 yards per game. The Broncos rank 20th in total defense, including second against the pass and last in the NFL against the rush. Playing without Bailey will hurt the Broncos somewhat and it is recommended that you use the Broncos DST as a No. 2 Fantasy option Week 8.
News: Denver will host the Green Bay Packers in a Super Bowl rematch in Week 8. The Packers have the 11th-best offense, mostly due to QB Brett Favre and his second-ranked passing game. The Packers are the worst team on the ground, averaging only 65.7 yards per game.
Analysis: The Broncos DST ranks 20th in total defense, including second against the pass and last in the NFL against the rush. Essentially that means that Favre will go up against a torrid secondary, but his running backs will only pick up a few yards against the weak linebackers. We only recommend using this DST unit as a bye-week replacement in Fantasy play for now.
News: The Denver Broncos DST allowed 28 points and 379 total net yards in Week 7 against the Steelers in a win. They also racked up four sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Tim Crowder also scooped up a fumble and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: Despite having 28 points hung on them, the Broncos DST provided Fantasy owners with a little bit of production. Look for similar results when QB Brett Favre and the Packers pay a visit to Invesco Field in Week 8.
News:The Sports Xchange reports among the problems with the Broncos run defense is the play of the linebackers. That's not the only problem. All of the players appear to be still adjusting to their role in Jim Bates' new scheme, and the Broncos have shuffled defensive linemen in and out to find the right mix. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan refused to blame the linebackers for the struggling run defense. "It's a combination of reasons," Shanahan said. "We're not going to get specific." Denver ranks last in the NFL in run defense, allowing 187.6 yards per game. Miami is 31st, allowing 168.5 yards per game. No other defense is allowing more than 150 rushing yards per game. The Broncos have a tough matchup this week, against Pittsburgh and its outstanding running back, Willie Parker.
Analysis: The Broncos' shakeup at linebacker started in the offseason. Al Wilson was released because he had a neck injury. Wilson, who is out of football, was a Pro Bowl player for many years and the captain of the defense. Filling his void has been tough. Denver moved D.J. Williams from outside to middle linebacker. He hadn't played the position before, but he is a great athlete and the Broncos thought he'd fit the role well. He has had some good moments, with a team-best 56 tackles, but he also has made some mistakes. When Williams moved to the middle, Nate Webster took his spot on the strong side. Ian Gold is the third linebacker. Denver has allowed more than 200 rushing yards in three of its five games. The reasons have been a mixture of the adjustment to the new scheme and breakdowns by the players. Consider reserving the Broncos DST until they iron out their problems on defense.
News: Denver has a tough matchup ahead of them in Week 7, as the Pittsburgh Steelers come in to town. The Steelers rank 10th in total offense, including second in the running game and 27th in the passing attack. They have allowed 11 sacks and only three interceptions.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is the top defense against the pass, but they can't stop the run, as they are 32nd on the ground. This DST ranks 18th in total defense, with 27.2 ppg allowed, nine sacks and four interceptions. Consider them a unit to sit in Fantasy play if you have an alternative with a better matchup.
News: Cornerback Champ Bailey, who injured his left quadriceps against the Chargers in Week 5, should be ready for the Pittsburgh game on Oct. 21. The Broncos have a bye in Week 6. "If we were playing this week, I don't think he'd be able to play," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He should be fine for Pittsburgh."
Analysis: The Broncos DST had no sacks, no interceptions, no forced fumbles and allowed 41 points to the Chargers in Week 5. The Broncos are on bye in Week 6 but play vs. Pittsburgh in Week 7. That's probably not going to be a good game for a defense giving up a lot of rush yards each week. It might be time to ditch the Broncos DST if you're still starting them; re-evaluate your DST options this week, you'll have to start a new one next week anyway.
News: The Broncos DST had no sacks, no interceptions, no forced fumbles and allowed 41 points to the Chargers in Week 5. Broncos perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey strained his left quadriceps while covering tight end Antonio Gates during the game, and cornerback Dre' Bly also came up gimpy in the second half.
Analysis: The Broncos are on bye in Week 6 but play vs. Pittsburgh in Week 7. That's probably not going to be a good game for a defense giving up a lot of rush yards each week. It might be time to ditch the Broncos DST if you're still starting them; re-evaluate your DST options this week, you'll have to start a new one next week anyway.
News: The Broncos DST will face the Chargers and LaDainian Tomlinson this Sunday. The Chargers rank 26th offensively, but they have had a tough schedule thus far.
Analysis: The schedule isn't getting easier for the Chargers. The Broncos DST ranks sixth in the NFL in total defense, but they rank first overall against the pass. Keep them active for this matchup. Last year, San Diego scored 83 points in two games against them.
News: The Broncos DST had no turnovers Sunday against the Colts and no sacks. Domenik Hixon had five kickoff returns for 110 yards.
Analysis: The Broncos DST has been a disappointment this year and should not be used in Week 5 against San Diego.
News: The Broncos DST ranks first in the NFL against the pass, averaging a mere 88.3 yards per game through the first three weeks. They have four interceptions and nine sacks, while allowing just two touchdowns through the air. Denver plays at Indianapolis in Week 4 and the Colts are ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring at 31 points per game.
Analysis: Peyton Manning is the best in the business, but he will have his hands full with this defense. The Colts should have their way against the Broncos DST with their running game, however. If you have another defense with a better matchup, start them in Week 3, but the Broncos will be solid starts against most other offenses.
News: Broncos defensive players are tired of hearing their struggles are part of a new scheme installed by first-year defensive coordinator Jim Bates. Instead, they're taking responsibility for the poor play to start the season. Despite having one of the league's worst run defenses, the Broncos rank first in the NFL against the pass, giving up only 88.3 yards per game. Or maybe that's because Denver can't stop the run, so opponents don't need to throw the ball. "It's not a lack of effort. It's not laziness," said defensive back Domonique Foxworth. "None of those things are a problem. Just being smart, and people not knowing exactly what they need to do."
Analysis: The Broncos DST was expected to be better in 2007, but they've struggled mightily. Whatever you do, don't use them when they play at Indianapolis in Week 4.
News: The Broncos allowed 24 points and 326 yards of offense in Week 3 vs. Jacksonville. Elvis Dumervil had two sacks, a forced fumble and a recovery and Alvin McKinley had a sack. They did not have an interception.
Analysis: The Broncos defense is a unit that can usually be trusted for a solid output and starting them against a weak Jacksonville offense was a great idea. It just didn't work out as well as anticipated. In Week 4 at Indianapolis, they will be slightly less appealing. Dumervil continues to be useful in most IDP leagues, but McKinley isn't a recommended option.
News: The Denver Broncos DST allowed 20 points in a Week 2 overtime win against Oakland. The Broncos recorded four sacks and three interceptions. Elvis Dumervil led the way with two sacks, while DBs Champ Bailey and Dre Bly each had interceptions.
Analysis: The Broncos DST will be back in action against the Jaguars in Week 3. They remain a must-start in all Fantasy leagues.
News: It's only one game, says the Rocky Mountain News, but the Broncos boast the league's No. 1 defense in terms of yardage allowed after Week 1. "You can't complain, even though we made a bunch of mistakes," coach Mike Shanahan said Monday. "When you give up seven points (on defense), you've got to feel pretty good with where you're at. We know we haven't arrived because by no means was it a clean game and there's a lot of good teams out there."
Analysis: The Broncos welcome in an unsteady Raiders offense in Week 2 and remain a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Broncos defense allowed a rushing touchdown to rookie Marshawn Lynch and a 74-yard touchdown on a punt return to Roscoe Parrish Week 1 against the Bills, but limited the offense to 184 total yards. They also sacked QB J.P. Losman twice (D.J. Williams and John Lynch) and intercepted a pass (Elvis Dumervil).
Analysis: Had it not been for the Parrish TD, the Broncos DST would have had a very nice Fantasy week. Still, they showed Sunday why they are one of the best defenses in the league. Holding any NFL offense to 184 yards is a solid accomplishment. The Broncos welcome in an unsteady Raiders offense in Week 2. They remain a No. 1 Fantasy DST.
News: The Buffalo Bills offense was awful during the preseason, and the Broncos defense looks good with an improved secondary.
Analysis: Look for Champ Bailey and Dre Bly to lock up Lee Evans and limit the passing game, and the Broncos front seven will do just fine against the run. Denver's DST is a solid start most weeks, and especially in Week 1.
News: D.J. Williams isn't making anybody forget about Al Wilson. The Broncos' middle linebacker has been slow to adjust to his new position after moving over from strongside linebacker when Wilson, the team's captain, emotional leader and top tackler a year ago, was waived in the offseason because of an injured neck and high salary. Williams, who played strongside linebacker last season, has made just three tackles in two exhibition games. The Broncos' front-line defense has allowed four touchdowns and two field goals in nine possessions against San Francisco and Dallas.
Analysis: Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he probably won't know until the regular season how much of a natural fit the middle is for Williams, who has played his entire career on the outside. He suggested it would be easy to move Williams back to his old spot if necessary. Despite Williams' trouble adjusting, the Broncos remain a startable Fantasy DST option in 2007 play, worth a late-round pick in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Denver starting defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban likely suffered a season-ending torn Achilles' tendon in the Broncos' 31-20 preseason loss to Dallas on Saturday night. Ekuban hurt his right Achilles' in the second quarter. He slammed his helmet to the turf and was in obvious pain. "It's a shame to lose Ebenezer for the year," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's been a real leader for us."
Analysis: Ekuban racked up 63 tackles and seven sacks last season, but the Broncos went hog wild in obtaining defensive linemen this offseason. The more disappointing news is that the Broncos got run over by the Cowboys' offense, yielding three short-yardage touchdowns to Marion Barber and Julius Jones. They remain a startable Fantasy DST option in 2007 play, worth a late-round pick in all leagues.
News: The Denver Broncos played without defensive tackle Gerard Warren in Monday's preseason game at San Francisco because they're trying to trade the seven-year veteran, coach Mike Shanahan revealed after the game. Amon Gordon started in place of Warren, who might be released if Denver can't make a deal. "I'm not going to get into detail, but we thought we had a trade, and I'll talk about it a little more on Wednesday," Shanahan said. "Until things are finalized, I kept him home because I thought we had a trade."
Analysis: It sounds like Warren will have a new zip code, perhaps as early as mid-week. Either way, the Broncos have no plans to keep him on their roster. Even without Warren, the Broncos DST is a tremendous option in all Fantasy leagues heading into 2007.
News: Denver Broncos first-round draft pick Jarvis Moss injured his left knee during 1-on-1 pass-rush drills Monday and was taken off the field for medical tests. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury. Moss, who signed a five-year, $18 million deal on July 28, was injured when he did a spin move past an offensive lineman, then began hopping on one leg before crumpling to the grass. He stayed down for five minutes before getting up and walking gingerly to the sideline. He got into a cart and was taken to the locker room.
Analysis: The DL from Florida was the 17th overall selection in the NFL draft. He was expected to provide the Broncos' pass rush with some much-needed help. Continue to monitor Moss' status and hope he's able to return to form. His addition makes the Broncos DST that much stronger from a Fantasy perspective.
News: Broncos linebacker Warrick Holdman was released from the hospital Friday, 24 hours after being treated for a spinal cord concussion following a collision with a teammate at training camp. Holdman was injured Thursday when he tried to tackle running back Mike Bell, who lowered his left shoulder and struck the 243-pound linebacker in the crown of his helmet. Holdman crumpled to the grass and temporarily lost feeling in his extremities, although he could move his arms and legs by the time he was taken off the field to a waiting ambulance. "He did have some numbness this morning but not a lot," coach Mike Shanahan said.
Analysis: The Broncos didn't say when Holdman, who spent the night at Sky Ridge Medical Center, would be able to practice again. Holdman is a ninth-year pro in his first season in Denver after spending the last two years in Washington. He was working with the starters at strong side linebacker Thursday and is among a handful of players who are vying for the position in one of the most heated competitions at camp. If Holdman were to miss significant time, it wouldn't impact the hot Broncos DST much, which is still valuable as a No. 1 Fantasy unit thanks to their busy offseason -- new players include DTs Sam Adams and Jimmy Kennedy, LB D.D. Lewis and CB Dre Bly along with rookie DEs Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder ... and LB Holdman.
News: Broncos linebacker Warrick Holdman was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to a hospital Thursday after he appeared to injure his head or neck. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury, although he was moving his arms and legs. Holdman appeared to hit the crown of his helmet on another player's helmet and crumpled to the grass midway through the morning workout. He was rolled over onto his back after a minute, but stayed down for eight minutes. His teammates gathered around him as he was strapped to a headboard and carted off the field to a waiting ambulance.
Analysis: Holdman is a ninth-year pro in his first season in Denver after spending the last two years in Washington.
News: Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson has been suspended without pay for violating the NFL's steroid policy, the team said Friday. The Broncos released an NFL statement saying Peterson will be suspended without pay for the first four games of 2007 starting Aug. 31. The statement said Peterson had violated the policy on anabolic steroids and related substances but didn't specify what he had done. Peterson will be able to join the Broncos for training camp but won't be able to return to the active roster until Oct. 1 after the Broncos play the Indianapolis Colts. Peterson was cut by Green Bay last September and signed with the Broncos to replace Courtney Brown, who had to undergo a left knee operation five weeks into the season. Green Bay picked Peterson in the third-round of the 2003 draft.
Analysis: The Broncos' defense is not fazed by this news as they've reloaded via free agency, trades and the draft to put together an impressive unit. New for 2007 include DTs Sam Adams and Jimmy Kennedy, LBs Warrick Holdman and D.D. Lewis and CB Dre Bly along with rookie DEs Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder. We currently rank Denver as the sixth-best DST in Fantasy Football, but that may not be high enough. They're definitely a No. 1 DST, though, worth a pick in the late rounds. If they can add some sizzle to their return game, they're going to be as good if not better than the top DSTs in Fantasy Football.
News: The Denver Broncos added their second 300-pound-plus lineman this week, acquiring defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy on Friday from the St. Louis Rams in exchange for an undisclosed 2008 draft pick. Kennedy, listed at 320 pounds, spent the past four seasons with the Rams, who picked him 12th overall in the 2003 draft. On Monday, the Broncos signed 345-pound defensive tackle Sam Adams, a three-time Pro Bowl player who spent last season with Cincinnati. To make room for Kennedy on the roster, the Broncos waived first-year cornerback Eric Hill.
Analysis: The Broncos defense is coming along in a big way -- but can they jell in time for the start of the season? They are very deep both at DL and LB, and they have one of the best secondaries in the NFL. We currently rank Denver as the sixth-best DST in Fantasy Football, but that may not be high enough. They're definitely a No. 1 DST, though, worth a pick in the late rounds. If they can add some sizzle to their return game, they're going to be solid.
News: The Denver Broncos added depth at linebacker, signing unrestricted free-agents Warrick Holdman and D.D. Lewis on Thursday. Holdman, a ninth-year player out of Texas A&M, started 16 games for the Washington Redskins in 2006. Lewis played the last five seasons for Seattle. The former University of Texas player started 19 games for the Seahawks in his career, including the Super Bowl after the 2005 season. Lewis played in five games last season before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 12 because of a toe injury. The signing Holdman and Lewis comes 13 days after Denver severed ties with team captain Al Wilson. A combination of a neck injury and salary cap concerns led to his release.
Analysis: Holdman and Lewis should compete for a starting spot and both be a part of their LB rotation. Because neither one is expected to play in the middle of that defense, don't consider them for IDP league play. However, their arrival only helps the status of the Broncos DST, which is already considered a No. 1 unit for Fantasy play.
News: LB Al Wilson, who was released from the Broncos on Friday because of a combination of injury and salary cap concerns, said his neck remains a concern. Wilson won't play again until doctors clear him. Wilson claims doctors say his neck is getting better. "If I can get medically cleared, hey, I'm going to go out and play," Wilson said. "I feel like I still can play. It's not about the money. I'll only get out there and play if I'm healthy."
Analysis: The Broncos will miss Al Wilson's presence in the middle of the defense and in the locker room, but with Dre Bly coming aboard this offseason, Denver has quite possibly the best secondary in the NFL. Consider the Broncos DST a startable unit in 2007 play.
News: The Rocky Mountain News reports that Broncos LB Al Wilson did not show up for the club's voluntary offseason workout on Monday. Wilson was reportedly traded to the Giants when he failed their physical and was returned to the Broncos. Wilson is not happy with his status on the team.
Analysis: Expect Wilson and the Broncos to part ways one way or another, though he would still be valuable to them as a locker room leader and a run stopper if he stayed. With Dre Bly coming aboard this offseason, Denver has quite possibly the best secondary in the NFL. Consider the Broncos DST a startable unit in 2007 play.
News: Dan Wilkinson failed to report to the Denver Broncos, so the trade with the Miami Dolphins was declared void Saturday. The Broncos sent a sixth-round pick to the Dolphins on March 2 for the 14-year veteran defensive tackle. They extended an earlier deadline for the defensive lineman to report but when he failed to show up for his physical, the deal was voided. The Broncos retained their rights to the sixth-round pick in this year's draft and the Dolphins retained the rights to Wilkinson.
Analysis: Wilkinson would have provided nice depth to Denver's defensive line. Regardless, the Broncos DST remains a startable unit for 2007 Fantasy play.
News: According to multiple sources, the Broncos have signed CB Dre Bly to a five-year, $33 million deal, ensuring that the veteran cornerback will stay in Denver. Bly will team up with CB Champ Bailey to help form one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL.
Analysis: Denver has added DT Dan Wilkinson this offseason in addition to Bly, and their defense is expected to be one of the better ones in Fantasy in 2007. Linebacker Al Wilson may or may not be with the team next year, but either way, consider the Broncos DST a startable, No. 1 unit in 2007.
News: Al Wilson's new agent confirmed Thursday night that the Denver Broncos are shopping around for a trade partner but that a deal for the star middle linebacker isn't imminent. The NFL Network reported Thursday that talks with the New York Giants have heated up after the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles showed strong interest. The Broncos, whose policy is not to discuss personnel matters in the offseason, could move D.J. Williams inside to replace Wilson. The veteran had a team-best 113 tackles last season, including 88 solo, with five sacks, a forced fumble and six pass breakups.
Analysis: Denver has added DT Dan Wilkinson and CB Dre Bly so far this offseason, and their defense is expected to be one of the better ones in Fantasy in 2007 with or without Wilson. His tackles will be missed, but they will be able to replace him. Consider the Broncos DST a startable, No. 1 unit in 2007.
News: The Broncos acquired 14-year veteran defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from Miami on Saturday in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick in next month's draft. He was strictly a backup for the Dolphins last year, playing in 10 games and posting 14 tackles, breaking up three passes and forcing a fumble. Earlier this offseason, Denver traded for CB Dre Bly.
Analysis: The Broncos will boast a fierce veteran secondary with Champ Bailey and Bly at cornerback and Nick Ferguson and John Lynch at safety, and Wilkinson will help the defensive line rotation. Definitely consider the Broncos DST worth using as a No. 1 unit in 2007.
News: CBS SportsLine has confirmed that the Lions and Broncos will complete a trade that will send CB Dre Bly to Denver in exchange for RB Tatum Bell, OT George Foster and what is believed to be a fifth-round pick in the 2007 Draft. Bly will take Darrent Williams' old spot in the Broncos secondary.
Analysis: The Broncos will boast a fierce veteran secondary with Champ Bailey and Bly at cornerback and Nick Ferguson and John Lynch at safety. Definitely consider the Broncos DST worth using as a No. 1 unit in 2007.
News: The Denver Broncos released defensive coordinator Larry Coyer on Tuesday, nine days after their season came to a close with five losses in their last seven games. Coyer oversaw a defense that started 2006 on a record pace, becoming the first team in 64 years to not allow a touchdown over the first 11 quarters and drawing comparisons to some of the NFL's best ever. But the squad faltered, finishing 14th in the league in yards allowed as the Broncos stumbled from a 7-2 start to a 9-7 finish. Coyer served four years as head coach Mike Shanahan's defensive coordinator, earning the promotion from linebackers coach to succeed Ray Rhodes.
Analysis: The Broncos defense is expected to be a strong unit again in 2007 despite losing CB Darrent Williams and their four-year coach. Consider them a low-end unit for consideration in league drafts next summer.
News: The Denver Post reports Broncos starting CB Darrent Williams was shot and killed early Monday morning after leaving a nightclub while sitting in a limousine. A female companion was also shot. The team confirmed the death and a spokesman told ESPN that the team was in, "complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy."
Analysis: Williams was considered to be one of the better up-and-coming cornerbacks in the NFL, especially after coming on strong as a rookie in 2005. He finished 2006 with 86 total tackles (75 solo), three fumble recoveries and four interceptions, one being returned for a touchdown.
News: The Broncos allowed 26 points and 357 yards of total offense in a Week 17 loss to San Francisco, but Champ Bailey was able to return an interception 70 yards for a score in the game. They also picked up five sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Broncos went from great to mediocre as a defensive unit as the season progressed, but will still be worth drafting in most 2007 Fantasy drafts in the late rounds.
News: The Denver Broncos DST allowed 23 points and 343 total net yards in Week 16 against the Bengals. The Broncos also racked up two sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: The Broncos will look to bounce back in Week 17 against RB Frank Gore and the 49ers. They remain a must-start in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Denver Broncos declared DL Antwon Burton, WR/KR Brian Clark, RB Cedric Cobbs, TE Chad Mustard, RB Damien Nash, DL Kenny Peterson and LB Nate Webster are inactive for Week 16 against the Bengals.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth using in any Fantasy leagues.
News: The Broncos DST got two interceptions from DB Champ Bailey against Arizona. Bailey also added four tackles. DL Ebenezer Ekuban had two tackles and a sack. DL Gerard Warren had one tackle and a sack. DL John Engelberger had two tackles and a sack. LB Ian Gold had six tackles. LB Al Wilson had four tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Broncos DST a No. 2 option for Week 16 against the Bengals and use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: Broncos second-year cornerback Darrent Williams suggested some of his teammates don't believe their season is salvageable on Monday. The Broncos (7-6) believe they must win their final three games to reach the playoffs. Yet Williams, who gave up several big plays in Denver's 48-20 loss at San Diego on Sunday, said that while nobody was outwardly conceding the season, he sensed some teammates were ready to cash it in. "Some people are ready to hang it up, you know, you can tell," said Williams, who didn't name names. "And it's hard when you're losing. It makes everything hard, it makes coming to practice hard. It makes coaches harder on you. It just makes everything harder when you're losing. So, a few guys are probably ready to hang it up. I don't know who. But I'm not."
Analysis: Williams' remarks came three weeks after veteran wide receiver Rod Smith blasted his teammates' heart in an outburst following Denver's loss at Kansas City. They also were made about half an hour after Shanahan met with reporters. At that time, Shanahan said he sensed some frustration on his team. Such an outburst could see the Broncos rebound and play focused football to end the season. Denver plays at Arizona in Week 15 and should put up a good effort. Consider them a startable Fantasy defense.
News: The Broncos defense yielded 48 points at San Diego in Week 14, totaling just two sacks in the game. LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 103 yards and three TDs, and Philip Rivers threw for 279 yards and two TDs (both Antonio Gates touchdowns).
Analysis: Denver's defense could get its groove back at Arizona in Week 15, though the Cardinals have been running well lately. Consider the Broncos a low-end starting defense in the coming week.
News: Denver linebacker Al Wilson could return to practice this week after injuring his neck in the Broncos' loss to Seattle. Wilson was immobilized and carted off the field after spraining his neck going for a fumble. Coach Mike Shanahan said Wilson still had some numbness in his shoulders Monday. "I was obviously happy to hear the MRIs were negative, the X-rays were negative. He was released out of the hospital last night around 11:15. That was a good sign," Shanahan said. "Hopefully, he feels good Wednesday."
Analysis: Wilson is a key part of the Denver defense. Regardless, the Broncos defense is not a recommended unit at LT and Chargers in Week 14.
News: The Broncos DST allows 23 points and 270 total net yards in Week 13 against the Seahawks. They also had one interception and one sack.
Analysis: The Broncos will have their hands full trying to contain RB LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers in San Diego in Week 14.
News: Wilson was immobilized and carted off of the field on a special teams play in the fourth quarter in Week 13 against the Seahawks. He ran into one of his own players and was taken off on a gurney.
Analysis: Wilson was taken back to the locker room after being down for several minutes. We'll have more on his injuries when more information becomes available.
News: The Denver Broncos declared DT Antwan Burton, RB Cedric Cobbs, WR Quincy Morgan, TE Chad Mustard, RB Damien Nash, DE Kenny Peterson and LB Nate Webster are inactive for Week 13 against Seattle.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of Fantasy consideration when they are able to play.
News: The Broncos defense put up one sack and one interception while holding the Chiefs to 19 points on Thanksgiving in Week 12 action. Their run defense was crushed for the second week in a row, this time by Larry Johnson, who had 157 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Analysis: A week before, they got run over by LaDainian Tomlinson, and in Week 13, they'll contend with Shaun Alexander and the Seahawks. Talk about your bad luck! The Denver defense should still be considered a No. 1 Fantasy unit, but if you can land an elite defense or a good D with a great matchup, you should start them over the Broncos.
News: The Broncos DST scored a touchdown when DB Darrent Williams returned an interception for a score. Williams also added seven tackles. DL Ebenezer Ekuban had six tackles and a sack. DB John Lynch had six tackles. LB D.J. Williams had seven tackles and an interception. LB Al Wilson had seven tackles. DB Champ Bailey had three tackles. LB Ian Gold had six tackles.
Analysis: The Broncos DST has been solid all year and should be used in Week 12 against Kansas City. Use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Broncos defense allowed 13 total points and 244 total net yards in Week 10 at Oakland. The Broncos also had three sacks and a forced fumble in the win.
Analysis: The Broncos defense showed some chinks in the armor against a bad Oakland offense, but the only touchdown the Raiders scored was courtesy of a QB Jake Plummer interception which allowed Oakland to start a drive inside the red zone. The Broncos will have their hands full against RB LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers in Week 11.
News: The Denver Broncos announced RB Mike Bell, DE Patrick Chukwurah, RB Cedric Cobbs, DE Ebenezer Ekuban, LB Ian Gold, OG Chris Kuper, WR Quincy Morgan and TE Tony Scheffler are inactive for Week 10 at Oakland.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth using in any Fantasy leagues for Week 11 against San Diego.
News: Denver's defense carried the team early this season, getting off to a record-breaking start. It allowed the Broncos to win despite an offense that at times appeared unable - and at others unwilling - to move the ball downfield. With a defense that became the first since 1934 to allow only one touchdown in the first five games, the offense was asked to do little more than control the clock and not turn over the ball. Never was that more evident than the first time the Broncos played the Raiders. Jake Plummer completed only six passes in the final three quarters of a 13-3 win. When the teams meet again Sunday in Oakland, Denver (6-2) might not be able to rely as heavily on its defense. Seven players are listed as questionable on this week's injury report and the team also lost safety Sam Brandon to a season-ending knee injury last week against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: It is hard to imagine that even if the Broncos are without a handful of defensive players on Sunday that they wouldn't be able to handle a disappointing Raiders offense. Whatever the case, you should use the Broncos DST in Week 10 for Fantasy purposes.
News: The Denver Broncos placed safety Sam Brandon on injured reserve Tuesday. Brandon tore his right anterior cruciate ligament Sunday at Pittsburgh while tackling running back Najeh Davenport.
Analysis: Brandon's loss will not decrease the Fantasy value of the Broncos much, if at all, especially against the lowly Raiders in Week 10.
News: The Broncos' defense was decimated in the 31-20 victory. Defensive linemen Ebenezer Ekuban (thigh), Patrick Chukwurah (hamstring strain) and linebacker Ian Gold (hamstring strain) all had medical tests Monday. Coach Mike Shanahan said the results won't be revealed until Wednesday. Safeties Nick Ferguson and John Lynch had CAT scans for concussions and both came back negative. Cornerback Darrent Williams separated his shoulder during the game; Shanahan didn't know how long he would be out. "I can't ever remember losing as many guys on one side of the football," Shanahan said.
Analysis: Owners of the Denver defense have to be concerned with this rash of injuries. Expect them to be a serviceable unit Week 10 at Oakland, but they could have problems in Week 11 vs. San Diego and Week 12 at Kansas City if they're not 100 percent healthy. Keep tabs on them.
News: The Broncos DST got three interceptions and three fumble recoveries against Pittsburgh. DB Darrent Williams had eight tackles and two fumble recoveries. DB Champ Bailey had seven tackles and two interceptions. DB Curome Cox had one tackle, one fumble recovery and an interception. DL Kenard Lang had five tackles and two sacks. LB Al Wilson had nine tackles. LB D.J. Williams had eight tackles. DL Elvis Dumervil had one tackle and a sack. DL Demetrin Veal had four tackles and a sack.
Analysis: The Broncos have a great matchup in Week 10 against Oakland. Consider them a must-start and use all their usual IDP players.
News: The Broncos allowed 437 yards of total offense and 34 points in Week 8 vs. Indianapolis at home. They did not get to QB Peyton Manning and did not force a turnover in the game.
Analysis: We'll cut them some slack because it was Peyton Manning and the Colts, but the Broncos didn't do much for Fantasy owners this week. They've been one of the better defensive units all season and will look to bounce back in Week 9 at Pittsburgh.
News: The Denver Broncos DST allowed seven points and 165 total net yards in Week 7 at Cleveland. That is news, because it is just the second touchdown allowed in six games this season.
Analysis: The Broncos also had five sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in the win. They'll be put to the test in Week 8 when QB Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts pay a visit. The way the Broncos are going, their DST is a must-start regardless of the opponent.
News: The Denver Broncos announced FS Hamza Abdullah, WR Todd Devoe, OL Chris Kuper, OT Adam Meadows, DL Kenny Peterson and LB Nate Webster are inactive for Week 7 at Cleveland.
Analysis: None of the players listed above are useful in Fantasy Football. The Broncos host the Colts in Week 8 .
News: The Denver Broncos allowed just three points and 244 total net yards in Week 6 against the Raiders. They also recorded four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Broncos have won successive games by a 13-3 margin. They are also the first defense since 1934 to allow one or fewer touchdowns in each of its first five games. They should have another big game in Week 7 at Cleveland.
News: The Denver Broncos announced S Hamza Abdullah, RB Cedric Cobbs, WR Todd Devoe, TE Nate Jackson, G Chris Kuper, T Adam Meadows, DE Kenny Peterson and LB Nate Webster are inactive for Week 6 against the Raiders.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worth any Fantasy consideration.
News: Broncos defensive end Courtney Brown, whose career has been plagued by injuries, will miss the rest of the season and undergo another operation on his troublesome left knee. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft by Cleveland, Brown had knee surgery in August and hoped to return for the season opener. But he has been inactive for Denver's first four games and on Wednesday was placed on injured reserve. He was replaced on the roster by former Green Bay defensive lineman Kenny Peterson, who practiced Wednesday.
Analysis: The loss of Brown shouldn't hurt the value of the Broncos defense for use in Fantasy play. Absolutely consider them a must-start when they host the Raiders in Week 6.
News: The Denver DST allowed just three points and 257 total net yards in Week 5 against the Raiders in a win. The defense also came up with two sacks and three interceptions.
Analysis: The Broncos DST is a must-start in the next two weeks, as they face the Raiders at home before heading to Cleveland for a date with the Browns in Week 7.
News: After two straight weeks of allowing only field goals, Denver's defense finally allowed a touchdown in Sunday night's win in New England. However, they held the Pats to just 50 yards rushing and 4-of-16 on third down conversions and had an overall dominating performance.
Analysis: The Broncos have a bye in Week 4, so you'll need to find a replacement. After the bye week they host the offensively challenged Ravens, so make sure you have the unit active for that matchup.

Broncos D does its part
News: The Denver DST was solid in Week 2 against the Chiefs, limiting the Chiefs to two field goals in a 9-6 overtime win. The Broncos had 276 total net yards, a sack and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Despite the solid effort, the Broncos are not a recommended Fantasy defense against QB Tom Brady and the Patriots in Week 3 in Foxboro.

News: Even though journeyman Damon Huard will replace quarterback Trent Green in the Chiefs' starting lineup, the Broncos are trying not to be overconfident for this week's game. "He's mobile, athletic and very bright," defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. "He's been around this league, and he knows what's going on out there."
Analysis: The Broncos should force the Chiefs to pass, which means they will focus heavily on stopping Larry Johnson. Since the Broncos are so successful at beating the Chiefs at home, and because Trent Green is out, their defense is worth rolling with for Week 2 action.

Broncos surrender six field goals
News: The Broncos did not allow any TDs in their season-opener at St. Louis, but six field goals were enough to give the Rams the win in the end. They allowed 320 total net yards and recorded three sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Broncos played well as a defense and did not allow the Rams to score a single touchdown in their home opener. They remain a great option for Week 2 vs. Kansas City in their own home opener as it appears Trent Green will not be at the helm of the Chiefs offense.

Warren to play vs. Rams
News: Defensive tackle Gerard Warren feels well enough that he can play, but he admitted he isn't 100 percent. Warren dislocated his left big toe in practice Aug. 5. He is the focal point of the Broncos defensive line, so his effectiveness is important. "You got to keep staying on top of it and rehabbing it, and try to get it as close to 100 as you can," Warren said.
Analysis: Warren and the rest of the Broncos defensive line will be tested by Rams RB Steven Jackson this week. Reserve the Denver DST in all Fantasy leagues.

Champ, Wilson suspended by Broncos
News: Denver cornerback Champ Bailey and linebacker Al Wilson were suspended for the Broncos' second preseason game against Tennessee after missing team curfew the night before. Head coach Mike Shanahan would not discuss the specifics of what happened the night before the game, only that the players were suspended. "We've got rules and they go for everybody," Shanahan said. He added there would be no more punishment for either player.
Analysis: The suspension shouldn't impact the Denver defense, other than making them more aware of their curfew. Denver's DST is good enough to be used as a low-end No. 1 DST in leagues thanks to their veteran front and deep secondary. Spend a late-round pick to acquire them.

Broncos DL out 2-4 weeks
News: Broncos defensive lineman Gerard Warren will be out two to four weeks after dislocating a toe on his left foot during a goal-line drill Saturday. Warren fell to the ground, screamed in pain and clutched his foot after participating in the drill. He was carted off the field, though the news on the injury wasn't as bad as it first appeared it could be. "It was a (scary moment) for a second," Denver defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. "We're blessed."
Analysis: This is the second year in a row Denver has lost a defensive lineman in training camp. Courtney Brown dislocated his left elbow on Aug. 4, but returned in time to play in the final preseason game on Aug. 30. Despite the injury, Denver's DST should still be regarded as one of the top-12 units in Fantasy Football thanks to their deep defensive line, aggressive linebackers and a talented secondary.

Broncos to free up Lang
News: After spending last season as a linebacker, the constraints have been taken off Kenard Lang and he's been given the green light to get after the quarterback. He's back to being a sack specialist, where he's had 44 sacks in his nine-year career. "I did a lot of dropping and covering," Lang said. "I didn't get to rush the quarterback, which I love to do."
Analysis: The Broncos liked what they saw in Lang the linebacker so they're hoping to incorporate some of that into their defensive schemes. He's certainly confident. "When it's crunch time, you can always look at my number and know that I'm going to go make the plays," Lang said. Denver's DST should still be regarded as one of the top-12 units in Fantasy Football thanks to their deep defensive line, aggressive linebackers and a talented secondary.

Broncos' No. 2 CB job is open
News: Andrew Mason of DenverBroncos.com reports that Denver GM Ted Sundquist thinks head coach Mike Shanahan will open up the cornerback job opposite of Champ Bailey to all of his defensive backs. Second-year players Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth are the primary candidates. "There are a number of situations where you're in nickel and dime coverage and you need more than two corners," Shanahan said. "Many times are you facing three- and four-receiver sets where you need some help there. There'll be competition at cornerback."
Analysis: Regardless of who starts with Bailey, Denver's DST should still be regarded as one of the top-12 units in Fantasy Football thanks to their deep defensive line, aggressive linebackers and, yes, a talented secondary.

Analysis: Pittsburgh's offense isn't as complex as New England's, but it's plenty dangerous. Don't expect the Broncos to do as well -- especially in the turnover battle -- this Sunday.

Denver defense to face Brady

Analysis: The Broncos DST might get a turnover or two, but don't expect them to keep the Patriots out of the end zone in the Divisional Playoffs.
News: The Denver Broncos allowed just seven points and 236 yards in Week 17 at San Diego. They also scored on a safety and forced three turnovers.

News: Champ Bailey (hamstring) is listed as probable for Week 12 at Dallas. The Broncos also listed defensive tackle Demetrin Veal (shoulder) as probable.
Analysis: Both Bailey and Veal should be ready for action on Thanksgiving Day. Bailey is a must-start in all IDP leagues whenever he's on the field.
