News: The Lions drafted three cornerbacks and three linebackers in April's draft, all of them with picks in Round 3 or later. The three cornerbacks are Louisiana-Lafayette's Dwight Bentley, Albion's Chris Greenwood and New Mexico State's Jonte Green. The linebackers are Oklahoma's Ronnell Lewis (who might play some defensive end), Temple's Tahir Whitehead and Oklahoma's Travis Lewis. To date, they're the only additions to the Lions defense this offseason.
Analysis: Bentley might have a chance to start for the Lions given their lack of depth at cornerback, and Lewis has some potential given his athleticism, but the reality is that none of these rookies is expected to change how the Lions DST is viewed. That's not a bad thing -- they remain a low-end starting option headed into drafts this summer. They're fine as a final-round pick, especially since they take on the Rams at home in Week 1, and that's not a bad way to start the year.
News: Detroit had a difficult time stopping the New Orleans offense on Saturday night. They allowed the Saints' trio of running backs to rumble for 167 yards on the ground. Drew Brees also threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns, as he distributed the ball between eight different receivers. The Lions did sack Brees twice and even forced a fumble on one of those hits. They could have run it back for a score, but an official on the sideline blew the play dead as he thought it was an incomplete pass.
Analysis: The Lions pass defense struggled this season and Saturday's Wild Card game was no different. Fantasy owners should monitor any changes the Lions make in the offseason on defense, as they have some issues to address. Consider them a viable DST option for the 2012 season.
News: After being shredded for 307 yards passing and two touchdowns by QB Aaron Rodgers in its first meeting with Green Bay this year, the Detroit defense thought containing backup QB Matt Flynn wouldn't be a problem. However, Flynn was efficient like Rodgers and the Lions permitted six passing touchdowns in a 45-41 loss to the Packers in Week 17. Detroit surrendered a whopping 550 total yards and managed just two takeaways.
Analysis: The Lions' defense entered Sunday's game ranked fourth in the league in turnover margin, but couldn't produce too many and finished with two for the second straight game. One of those takeaways came on an interception of Flynn, who had attempted just five passes all season before the contest. Fantasy owners should expect an improvement from Detroit during the postseason and view the unit as a valuable DST in playoff formats.
News: Detroit's opponent in Week 17 -- Green Bay -- has racked up a franchise-record 515 points this season, including 27 points during the teams' first meeting earlier this year. However, the Lions do not anticipate battling the same dynamic Packers offense as QB Aaron Rodgers is not expected to play the entire game. Facing backup QB Matt Flynn could be a positive for Detroit, which has notched seven sacks in its past two games.
Analysis: The Lions permitted 349 total yards to Green Bay in Week 12, but that number could be shaved mightily on Sunday. Detroit also failed to record a turnover against the Packers, but notched two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, last week against San Diego. The Lions also allowed just 10 points to the Chargers -- its lowest amount since Week 2. Consider Detroit a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 17.
News: The Lions blew out the Chargers in Week 16, forcing two Philip Rivers interceptions, including one in the fourth quarter by Cliff Avril that was returned four yards for a touchdown. They also added three sacks and held the Chargers scoreless in the first half and fourth quarter as they won 38-10. A Malcom Floyd touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter were the only blemishes on an otherwise dominant day.
Analysis: The defensive touchdown was the seventh for the Lions on the season, putting them in second place in the league in that category. They have been a very opportunistic DST unit, and Fantasy owners have been rewarded with decent production on the season. However, they have been prone to giving up a lot of points at times, and Week 17 is a time when that could happen again as they take on the Packers high-powered offense. The Packers may be resting starters in the final week of the season, but unless Aaron Rodgers sits the whole game, it will be very difficult to recommend them, as the Packers put up 27 on them in Week 12. Keep an eye on the matchup, but think of the Lions as more of a No. 2 DST unit for Week 17.
News: The Lions DST heads into Week 16 at home against San Diego facing one of the hotter teams in the NFL. The Ravens DST was embarrassed by Philip Rivers and the San Diego offense last week as the unit couldn't record a single Fantasy point with 34 points allowed without recording a single sack or turnover. The Chargers have been playing really well lately and the Lions DST will definitely have its hands full.
Analysis: The Lions DST has only recorded double figures in Fantasy production once in the unit's last six games. They have only done it twice in the last 10 contests on the season. The Lions DST has not been a great unit all season and is not a recommended Fantasy option heading into Week 16.
News: Embattled DL Ndamukong Suh had a quiet game for the Lions in Week 15 against Oakland - until it mattered the most. With Sebastian Janikowski attempting a game-winning field goal attempt as time expired, Suh got his hand on the ball and preserved the 28-27 win. I got off the ball as hard and as fast as I could. Put up my hand, he said. Coach (Danny) Crossman does a great job with us, telling us that Janikowski is a great kicker and he gets the ball off fast. I put my (right) hand up. It hit my thumb. Other than the blocked field goal, the Lions didnt have a great game, giving up 477 yards of total offense with only one fumble recovery and three sacks.
Analysis: The Lions forced their 30th turnover of the season in the game, but they were expected to harass Carson Palmer much more than they did. Palmer was able to throw for a season-high 367 yards against them. Only 20 of the 27 points given up were on the defense, but it was still not a good game for the Oakland DST unit. With how good they had been at forcing turnovers, they could have done even more. And things only get tougher in Week 16, as they face a Chargers offense that passes for the sixth most yards in the league and is desperate for a win. We cant recommend them as anything more than a No. 2 Fantasy DST united for Week 16.
News: Raiders QB Carson Palmer, who took over as a starter in Week 9 after Jason Campbell went down with a broken collarbone, has admitted to trying to do much with the offense, which could explain his 13 interception to nine touchdown ratio. Palmer, who the Lions face in Week 15, said Sometimes if the play isnt there, the best thing is to get to second-and-10, and thats something that Im going to do a better job of. The Raiders have turned the ball over 19 times in the seven games since acquiring Palmer, a good sign for a defense that has forced 29 turnovers on the season.
Analysis: The Lions DST has been extremely opportunistic this season, so you have to like the matchup for them with how mistake prone Palmer has been recently. One thing the Raiders have done well is protect the quarterback, allowing the sixth fewest sacks in the league, so the Lions strong pass rush could have trouble getting to Palmer. Even if they dont, Palmer could be good for a couple of turnovers anyways. Thats been the story of the Raiders season recently, and because of that, the Lions could be a decent play for Week 15. Consider them a No. 2 DST unit.
News: The Lions jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in Week 14, but thanks to a porous defense, they nearly allowed the Vikings to win, holding on for a 34-28 victory. The Lions DST permitted the Vikings to roll up 425 yards of offense, including 254 yards in the second half. Turnovers helped to keep the Lions in the game, as they recovered three Minnesota fumbles and intercepted starting QB Christian Ponder three times before he got yanked early in the second half. A Ponder fumble in the first quarter resulted in a defensive touchdown, as did an interception in the second quarter. The Lions DST also came away with four sacks, their highest total since Week 8.
Analysis: Though the Lions' defense could do little right in the second half, they managed to do some good things for Fantasy owners. The Lions DST has done a good job of forcing turnovers all year long, and in Week 15, they will face a Raiders offense that has not been very potent in recent weeks. Despite their poor showing for much of Week 14, they are worth considering as a high-end No. 2 DST for the coming scoring period.
News: The Lions have allowed their opponents to score at least 25 points in each of their last four games, but each of their last four opponents ranks among the top eight teams in scoring. In Week 14, the Lions DST has an opportunity to bounce back, as they will face the Vikings, who rank 22nd in points scored. The Lions, who have recorded seven sacks over the last four games, can boost that total against Minnesota, as only three teams have allowed more sacks than the Vikings.
Analysis: This is the best opportunity that Fantasy owners have had to use the Lions DST in awhile. The Vikings represent a highly favorable matchup, even if RB Adrian Peterson plays as expected. The Lions can be considered a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 DST for Week 14.
News: The Lions had a hard time slowing down the Saints in Week 13. New Orleans put up 438 yards of total offense, including 338 through the air, and defeated Detroit 31-17. The Lions were able to sack QB Drew Brees twice but could not pick him off. "We played poorly on defense. We never gave ourselves a chance," coach Jim Schwartz said. "We didn't get the job done in coverage, we didn't get the job done rushing the passer."
Analysis: The Lions entered Sunday ranked sixth in the league in pass defense but struggled against Brees and the Saints' potent passing attack. They also gave up 100 yards on the ground and sorely missed DL Ndamukong Suh in the middle. To be fair, the Lions have faced two of the top offenses in the league in back-to-back weeks, so they should be better off next week against the Vikings. Minnesota has been inept on offense at times this season so consider the Lions DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 14.
News: The Lions defense will have their hands full in Week 13 against the Saints. New Orleans sports the best passing attack in the league, putting up over 324 yards per game, and rank eighth in rushing. Detroit ranks sixth and 23rd in the NFL against the pass and run, respectively. The Lions have recorded 29 sacks thus far with 15 interceptions and four DST touchdowns. DL Ndamukong Suh was suspended by NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell on Tuesday for two games, and is unlikely to play in Week 13.
Analysis: The Lions have done a decent job against the pass thus far but gave up 307 yards and two touchdowns through the air to the Packers on Thanksgiving. New Orleans has a comparable passing attack to Green Bay and are coming off a contest in which QB Drew Brees threw for 363 yards with four scores. The Saints could use their running game to open up the pass on Sunday, which does not bode well for Detroit. Add in the loss of Suh and the Lions DST should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 13.
News: Thanksgiving 2011 won't be one to remember in Detroit. Aaron Rodgers threw for 307 yards and two scores, John Kuhn rumbled for another touchdown and the Lions lost to the rival Packers 27-15 on Thursday. The DST didn't pick up a single turnover and had two sacks of Rodgers. During the game, DT Ndamukong Suh stepped on a Packers lineman after banging his head into the turf and was ejected. Additionally, two penalties by the defense set up scores for Green Bay. Adding injury to insult, cornerbacks Chris Houston and Brandon McDonald and safety Louis Delmas all were sidelined with knee injuries. Wide receiver Rashied Davis had to play some cornerback in the second half.
Analysis: Not a banner day for the Lions, who were outclassed on both sides of the ball. It won't get easier when they head to New Orleans to play the Saints, potentially without several defensive backs. It could get ugly -- you might want to consider other options for your Fantasy lineup for Week 13's matchup.
News: The Lions DST has not been playing well as a unit recently as the team heads into the Week 12 Thanksgiving game against Green Bay on Thursday. Detroit picked off Carolina QB Cam Newton four times last week and still couldn't score in double figures in Fantasy points as they managed just one sack and allowed 35 points and 409 total yards to the Panthers. The Lions DST has allowed 60 points in its last two games against the Bears and Panthers.
Analysis: The Lions DST had trouble with the Bears and Panthers the last two weeks, wait until they get a load of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Green Bay has scored at least 33 points in four straight games and is a perfect 10-0 on the season. No opposing DST has scored in double figures against the Packers all season, and we don't expect that to change with the Lions DST in Week 12. Consider the Lions DST a unit best left on benches or waivers for the Thursday game.
News: The Lions DST made hay picking off Cam Newton in Week 11, doing so four times. They sacked him once but allowed 35 points in the process. The Lions allowed 280 yards through the air and 137 yards on the ground.
Analysis: The Lions DST wasn't bad here, but they could struggle to limit the Packers when they renew their rivalry on Thanksgiving Day. You might want to consider other options before going with them in Week 12.
News: Carolina coach Ron Rivera said he is not surprised Detroit's defense has gone through a physical and mental renaissance under coordinator Gunther Cunningham. Rivera will pit his coaching skills against his mentor in Week 11 at Detroit. Hes a hard-nosed guy, Rivera said. His players reflect his personality. The Lions' defense has yielded 53 fewer points (237-184) and collected nine more sacks (26-17) than the Panthers this year.
Analysis: Behind QB Cam Newton's rushing ability and a solid running back tandem, Carolina could prove to be a tough test for Detroit. Lions LB Justin Durant described RB DeAngelo Williams as a tough runner, while RB Jonathan Stewart will test outside linebackers. If we arent technically sound everywhere on the field, their runners can all take it to the house, Durant said. Consider Detroit a high-end No. 2 Fantasy DST for Week 11.
News: In a windy day in Chicago, Detroit held their division foe to 216 total yards of total offense. That wasn't good enough though as the Bears would win the game, 37-13. The Lions recovered one fumble and sacked Jay Cutler twice in the outing. Detroit almost scored on defense, but what they thought was a fumble was ruled an incomplete pass by Cutler.
Analysis: Even though the Lions did some things well in Week 10, it wasn't enough to get the win. Looking ahead the Lions face the Panthers next weekend. If Detroit can fluster rookie QB Cam Newton and force him to make mistakes, the Lions could have a field day. Fantasy owners should continue to view the Lions DST as a decent option moving forward.
News: The Lions held the Bears to 359 yards of total offense and 13 points when they played them earlier in the year and will be looking for similar success in Week 10. Chicago ranks 11th in the league in rushing, lead by RB Matt Forte's 100.6 yards per game, and have the 18th-best passing attack. Detroit ranks sixth in the NFL against the pass and 28th in run defense. The Lions have recorded 24 sacks thus far with 11 interceptions and four defensive/special teams touchdowns.
Analysis: The Lions have given up just under 19 points per game so far this season while the Bears are putting up 25 points per contest. They were able to limit Chicago to 237 yards through the air in Week 5, but gave up 122 yards rushing. But with the way the Bears' offensive line has struggled this season, Detroit's potent pass rush should be able to disrupt QB Jay Cutler. Consider the Lions DST as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 10.
News: Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said the key to beating Denver during their Week 8 matchup was not allowing the Broncos to dictate tempo. That meant the Lions had to eliminate the run as an option and let their front four cut loose on QB Tim Tebow. The visitors effectively handled Tebow and tallied seven sacks to capture a 45-10 victory. Detroit now has 24 total sacks this season and four games with at least three sacks.
Analysis: The Lions swarmed Tebow as they finished with a pair of defensive touchdowns. Detroit DL Cliff Avril forced a fumble in the third quarter and ran the ball back 24 yards for a touchdown. It was the first giveaway Tebow recorded this season. Lions DB Chris Houston also returned an interception 100 yards for a score early in the fourth. Continue to consider Detroit a No. 1 Fantasy DST against Chicago in Week 10 following its bye.
News: After watching Denver QB Tim Tebow escape several tackles to keep plays alive against Miami in Week 7, the Detroit defense is focusing on limiting the signal-caller's mobility for Sunday's game. Weve got to get to him as soon as possible, Lions DL Cliff Avril said. The left-handed Tebow offers Avril the opportunity to rush from the blind-side, an aspect hes looking forward to. With (Tebows) back to me, maybe Ill get a fumble, he said.
Analysis: The Broncos offense has rarely been efficient this season and is posting just 304.3 total yards to rank 25th in the NFL. Tebow, who will be making his second start of the season, must face a Lions pass defense that ranks ninth in the league (204.6 ypg) and has 17 sacks. Detroit has also created at least two turnovers in each of its past two games, including two interceptions in Week 7 against Atlanta. The Lions will likely bring increased pressure on the inexperienced Tebow. Consider Detroit a No. 1 Fantasy DST for Week 8.
News: The Lions defense didn't have its best performance in terms of points and yardage surrendered in Week 7, giving up 23 and 328 to the visiting Falcons, but it did make its share of big plays. The Lions recorded three sacks, including one by Ndamukong Suh and one by Cliff Avril. They also had two interceptions -- one by Amari Spievey and one by Eric Wright.
Analysis: The Lions have a terrific front four that usually generates a decent number of sacks and turnovers, making the Lions DST a viable Fantasy option regardless of the matchups. It isn't quite to must-start status yet, but it's certainly worth starting in Week 8 with a favorable matchup at Denver.
News: Detroit's front four of Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril are among the most feared in the NFL, but that hasn't stopped teams from running the ball. The Lions are 26th against the run (129.5 yards per game) after surrendering a season-high 203 to the 49ers in Week 6. Worse yet, they face a run-heavy Falcons offense in Week 7 that returned to its roots with great success against the Panthers in Week 6, giving RB Michael Turner 27 for 139 yards. Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw for only 163 yards in that contest, and that's the way he likes it. "We'd like to be able to do that every week," Ryan said.
Analysis: Whether running or passing, the Falcons haven't been an especially good matchup for opposing defenses this year, giving up 8.8 Fantasy points per game. And unfortunately, Detroit's defense plays right into their strengths. The Lions rank an intimidating sixth against the pass, so you have to expect the Falcons to run, run and run some more. If that's the case, then that impressive Lions pass rush won't pay dividends for Fantasy owners. Of course, the Lions could jump out to a big lead and force the Falcons to pass the ball. The Lions have enough playmakers on defense that their DST should remain a viable starting unit in Fantasy this week even if it doesn't have the most favorable matchup.
News: The Lions allowed the 49ers to gain 203 rushing yards against them, but they held the passing game to 111 yards in a 25-19 loss in Week 6. In addition to preventing 49ers QB Alex Smith from passing for much yardage, the Lions sacked Smith twice, forced him to cough up a fumble and intercepted him in late in the third quarter.
Analysis: While the Lions had no problems in containing Smith, a 141-rushing yard effort by 49ers RB Frank Gore spoiled the defense's afternoon. The Lions' DST is not among the elite units, but they have been good enough to limit some of the league's lesser offenses, like the Bears and Chiefs. In Week 7, though, they face the Falcons, who have scored more than 30 points in three of their six games. Owners should view the Lions as a low-end No. 1 DST.
News: When the Lions' DST faces the 49ers in Week 6, they will be going up against one of the league's hottest offenses. San Francisco ranks seventh in points scored per game and they have put up 72 points over their last two games. The running game has fueled the 49ers' outburst, as they gained 377 yards on the ground against the Eagles and Buccaneers combined. The Lions have a better chance to contain the Niners' running game, though, as they rank 18th in the league against the run, whereas both the Eagles and Buccaneers are languishing in the bottom 10.
Analysis: The Lions have been a reliable DST option, and while the 49ers have been potent of late, they are not among the elite offensive units. Owners can continue to roll with Detroit as a No. 1 DST in Week 6.
News: The Lions DST surrendered 13 points on 359 yards of total offense in Week 5 against the Bears. The unit was able to hold Chicago to just once offensive touchdown in the 24-13 victory, despite being on the field for 66 total plays. Detroit also put constant pressure on Jay Cutler all game long, finishing with three sacks and six QB hits in the contest. However, the Lions were unable to turn the Bears over in the contest and allowed 122 yards rushing.
Analysis: Detroit's DST played pretty well on Monday night and were able to really disrupt Chicago's rhythm on offense. The unit should continue to see a boost on the defensive line now that Nick Fairley is back in action, which should help the team sure up their run defense. The Lions will now take on the red-hot 49ers in Week 6, who have been playing very well of late. However, San Francisco still has some issues to work out on offense, so consider the Lions' DST a low-end No. 1 Fantasy unit next Sunday.
News: While Detroit DL Ndamukong Suh acknowledged that Chicago RB Matt Forte poses a multi-dimensional threat, he is looking forward to facing him during the teams' Week 5 clash on Monday night. Seeing (Forte) have a 200-yard game last week is a little scary, Suh said. (Facing him) is a great challenge, and Im up for it. The Lions have not allowed an opposing running back to rush for more than 80 yards and permitted just one rushing touchdown. Detroit could also receive a boost as LB Justin Durant (concussion) has been cleared to play.
Analysis: In addition to Forte, Detroit is also focused on slowing Bears QB Jay Cutler, who has thrown for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in five career games against the Lions. Detroit DL Corey Williams said the team will utilize an aggressive pass rush in hopes of limiting Cutlers effectiveness. Cutler will hold the ball and give his receivers time to get open, said Williams, who has seven tackles this year. Well use that to our advantage. Chicago is giving up an average of 7.8 Fantasy points per game to opposing defenses this year -- consider the Lions a No. 1 Fantasy DST option.
News: The Lions scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in Week 4 at Dallas, helping them mount a come-from-behind win against the Cowboys. With Detroit trailing 27-3 in the third quarter, LB Bobby Carpenter returned an interception 35 yards for a score. Chris Houston followed up with a 56-yard interception return on the very next drive to cut the deficit to 27-17. Overall, the Lions would allowed 30 points and 434 yards of offense. They forced three interceptions in the second half, however, and added a sack.
Analysis: Overall, the Lions defense put forth a poor effort for much of the game. They were torched by Tony Romo, who was playing his second game with a rib injury and without one of his top receivers in Miles Austin. However, the touchdowns saved the day for the Lions not only in real life but in Fantasy leagues as well. The Lions defense has been forcing plenty of turnovers in the early going this season and has some play makers that can create pressure. So while the Cowboys were able to move the ball on them in Week 4, we'd still consider Detroit's defensive unit a quality play in Week 5 against a much more conservative Bears offense. They remain a viable play in any 12-team format.
News: The Lions will be on the road in Dallas in Week 4, facing a Cowboys team that has held opposing defensive units to below 10 Fantasy points (standard-scoring leagues) in two of the first three weeks of the season. The Cowboys have thrown four interceptions, allowed six sacks and given up three fumbles. They allowed a defensive touchdown in Week 1.
Analysis: The Jets put up 18 Fantasy points in standard scoring leagues against the Cowboys in Week 1. Since then, the Cowboys allowed 7 points to the 49ers in Week 2 and 9 points to the Cowboys in Week 3. The Lions, meanwhile, have gotten off to a terrific start with 16 points against the Buccaneers in Week 1, 30 points in Week 2 against the Chiefs and 11 points in Week 3 at Minnesota. The Cowboys present their toughest matchup so far, but the team is dealing with several injuries. QB Tony Romo is playing with a broken rib and a punctured lung. RB Felix Jones hurt his shoulder in Week 3. WR Miles Austin has been ruled out with an injury and fellow WR Dez Bryant has an injury of his own he has been playing through. The Cowboys were held without a touchdown in their Monday night win over the Redskins and that could be enough reason to ride this one out with the Lions in standard 12-team leagues, despite what appears to be a tough matchup on paper.
News: The Lions DST certainly did not look sharp early on in the Week 3 overtime win over the Vikings. Detroit was losing 20-0 at halftime. In the end, however, the Lions DST stopped the Vikings in the second half and won the game 26-23. The Lions DST limited the Vikings to 332 yards of offense and forced one turnover in the game on a Michael Jenkins' lost fumble. Quarterback Donovan McNabb was sacked four times by the Lions DST in the game.
Analysis: The Lions DST has been a solid unit this season as they have recorded eight sacks in three games and also have forced nine turnovers. Minnesota didn't exactly air things out on Sunday and that is why the Lions only forced the one turnover. Playing at Dallas in Week 4, the Lions DST will once again be a recommended Fantasy unit.
News: The Lions DST head into Week 3 in Minnesota facing their second inept offense in as many weeks. The Lions DST decimated the Chiefs in Week 2 as they limited Kansas City to just three points and 267 yards while forcing five turnovers and picking up two sacks. The Lions DST has already forced eight turnovers on the season in two games, good enough to tie the unit with the Ravens DST for the most in the NFL after two weeks of the season.
Analysis: The Lions play at Minnesota in Week 3 with a good chance at another runaway victory. The Vikings have scored a total of 37 points in two games, but the Chargers and Buccaneers don't exactly constitute tough defenses. The Lions DST has been a solid unit already this season and should continue to see action as a No. 1 Fantasy option heading into Week 3 at Minnesota.
News: The Lions defense, coming off of a solid Week 1 performance, performed even better Week against the Chiefs. They improved in all areas, limiting the Kansas City attack to just 267 total yards and 3 points in a blowout win. The defense had QB Matt Cassel off balance, and they educed three interceptions as a result as well as a fumble recovery on a sack. The unit accounted for six turnovers in all, amassing a pair of sacks in the process.
Analysis: The Lions defense came from all angels on Sunday, and first downs were hard to come by for the Chiefs. They notched some garbage time stats later in the game, and they still did not reach 300 total yards. Fantasy owners expected big things from the Lions DST heading into the year after a strong 2010 finish, and they have held their own over the first two games of the season. Continue to view the unit as an elite option heading into Week 3 against the Vikings.
News: The Lions defense, coming off of a solid Week 1 performance, is looking to duplicate the effort against the Chiefs in Week 2. Not only that, but they are playing for defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who used to coach in Kansas City. We know how important this game is to (Cunningham), DE Kyle Vanden Bosch said. Detroit faces the running tandem of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones -- who led the NFL in rushing in 2010 -- but they are stout against the run. Our play against the run is improved, Cunningham said. Weve stepped up the practice tempo and time (spent on run defense). The linebackers had to learn what to do, and theyre (quickly) learning.
Analysis: All signs point the a motivated and aggressive Lions defense making another statement on Sunday, but the Chiefs have re-committed their offense during the week after they were embarrassed last week by Buffalo. While the running game may be held in check, Detroit's secondary may be in for a test against the potentially-explosive passing game. Reigning NFL TD-leader Dwyane Bowe still has all the ability in the world, though the Lions limited Mike Williams to just 50 yards in Week 1. Fantasy owners should consider the Detroit DST to be a solid No. 1 option heading into the matchup.
News: The Lions defense held Tampa Bay to just one offensive touchdown in a 27-20 win in Week 1. Tampa Bay's first touchdown came off a defensive score in the first quarter. In fact, the Bucs didn't score their offensive touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay totaled 313 yards of offense and just 56 yards on the ground. The Lions came away with two sacks and two turnovers (one interception).
Analysis: The Lions did a great job swarming QB Josh Freeman and the Bucs running game in Week 1. And they did it without defensive tackle Nick Fairley and DB Alphonso Smith. It's scary to think how dangerous this unit will be when those two return. The Lions could be in for a very good season, so the Lions DST is a viable Fantasy option. Detroit hosts K.C. in Week 2. The Chiefs totaled just 213 yards and seven points in Week 1 against Buffalo.
News: The last time the Lions defense squared off against the Bucs in Week 15 in 2010, they gave up 20 points 403 yards. The Bucs rushed for 176 yards and Detroit failed to force a turnover. The Lions will be looking for a much better effort in Week 1 when they travel to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The Lions allowed 23.1 points and 343.6 yards per game in 2010. While they made improvements as a team, they still have more room to get even better. The addition of rookie defensive lineman Nick Fairley should help the Lions against the run, but Fairley might have to sit out Week 1 with a foot injury. Detroit still has Ndamukong Suh up front, and he should continue to be a force. It's just that the Lions DST is more of a No. 2 option Week 1, but they definitely have the potential to be a No. 1 option in 2011.
News: The Lions started to turn around the franchise last year with an improved defensive line -- and now it just got better. Detroit drafted Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley with the No. 13 pick in the NFL draft. They already have defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, the only rookie on The Associated Press All-Pro team, along with veteran standouts Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams. The 6-foot-4, 298-pound Fairley entered the draft after winning the Lombardi Award as a junior with the Tigers. Fairley had 11 1/2 sacks last season and a total of 24 stops behind the line for the national champion Tigers. "He's an impact player at an impact position," head coach Jim Schwartz said. "He dominated games at times -- a lot like Ndamukong Suh dominated games. Turn the national championship game on, this guy was the best on the field."
Analysis: Last season Detroit's run defense yielded 1,999 yards on the ground with 18 rushing scores allowed. Fairley's addition to Detroit's D-line rotation will go a long way to make them tough to run against. In fact, there's a chance that the infamous notoriety that the Vikings' "Williams Wall" had the last few seasons will be mirrored by the Suh-Fairley duo in Detroit. This unit has already added safety Erik Coleman, have Stefan Logan returning kicks and is happy with their cornerbacks right now. An improvement or two at linebacker could catapult the Lions DST into one of the toughest in the league. Don't laugh -- they might be worth drafting late this summer and definitely will be worth starting when faced with a good matchup.
News: A week after getting released by the Falcons, safety Erik Coleman will attempt to ressurect his career with the Lions. Multiple reports say Coleman has agreed to a deal with Detroit, where he'll be the odds-on favorite to start.
Analysis: Coleman automatically gives the Lions depth in their secondary and should make their pass defense a little bit better. Watch out -- another addition or two to this defense and the Lions DST will be a force in 2011. They finished 12th in standard scoring leagues in 2010, so they're close.
News: Vikings QB Brett Favre could only watch from the sidelines as the Detroit Lions stomped out the Minnesota offense in a 20-13 win and help Detroit finish the season on a four-game winning streak. Favre was ruled inactive because of a concussion, so Joe Webb got the start. Detroit had no trouble containing Webb, who led no touchdown drives. Minnesota managed just 211 yards (74 rushing). Detroit totaled three sacks and picked off Webb once.
Analysis: The Lions defense was a big part of the team's success down the stretch. They allowed an average of 15.8 points during the team's four-game winning streak. The Lions have a lot of good young players on defense, particularly Ndamukong Suh, and could be a force to reckon with in 2011. The Lions DST will be more of a potential Fantasy sleeper DST on Draft Day 2011.
News: The Detroit Lions are preparing for their Week 17 matchup against the Vikings not knowing which quarterback they will face. The Vikings have yet to name a starting QB for Week 17, holding out hope that QB Brett Favre will make his return from a concussion. If not, then Week 16 hero Joe Webb will start for Minnesota. Weve had a good week of practice and its late in the season, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. Weve played Favre before. Weve also played some mobile quarterbacks like (Joe Webb) before. Whatever happens, well be ready for it. Favre was under center in Minnesota's 24-10 win against the Lions in Week 3. Minnesota totaled 368 yards, including 183 on the ground.
Analysis: The Lions are a different team heading into Week 17 than they were in their first matchup against Minnesota. Detroit faced the Vikings amid opening the season with a four-game losing streak and remaining one of the laughing stocks of the NFL. Now, Detroit is riding a three-game winning streak and looking to end the season with a huge home win. All signs point to Webb making the start because of Favre's health, but Webb is a scrambling QB, so it's not like the Lions would have a layup matchup. Continue to view the Lions DST as more of a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 17.
News: The Lions DST gave up 27 points and 425 yards to the Dolphins in a Week 16 victory, but helped their cause by picking off QB Chad Henne twice and returning one for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Detroit also recovered a fumble and sacked Henne twice.
Analysis: The Lions allowed the Dolphins to score more than 20 points for only the third time in their last eight games Sunday, but their defensive touchdown and turnovers meant they ended up with a very respectable Fantasy total in Week 16. Detroit could be worth a shot again in the final game of the season vs. Minnesota, but only in deeper formats.
News: The Lions play at Miami in Week 16, which could be a nice matchup for Detroit, as the Dolphins have scored less than 20 points in five of their last seven games. QB Chad Henne also has three touchdowns and four interceptions in his last three games.
Analysis: The Lions DST put up 20 points in standard Fantasy leagues a couple of weeks ago against the Packers, but reverted back to their mediocre form last week against the Buccaneers. While this matchup against the offensively challenged Dolphins might look good on paper, the Lions are too inconsistent defensively to be worth using in anything but very deep Fantasy formats for Week 16.
News: The Lions escaped with a 23-20 overtime win at Tampa Bay in Week 15, but their defense did not do a great job of keeping the Buccaneers' offense in check. Tampa Bay rolled up 403 yards worth of offense on the afternoon, and they did not turn the ball over. While Detroit's defense did come up with three sacks of QB Josh Freeman, the Bucs' passer had one of his better games of the year, completing 21 of 32 passes for 251 yards.
Analysis: The Lions' DST has been merely mediocre this season, and while they will face a mild Dolphins offense in Week 16, they should not be used as anything more than a No. 2 Fantasy DST.
News: The Lions' defense had a superb game in Week 14, holding the Packers to three points and 258 yards, and stifling their offense even while QB Aaron Rodgers (concussion) was still in the game. They will try to build on their success in Week 15 against a mild Tampa Bay offense that ranks 21st in the league in offensive yardage. The Lions could feast on the Bucs' passing game, which ranks 22nd in the NFL in yardage, while Detroit ranks 13th in passing yardage allowed and sixth in sacks.
Analysis: The Lions' DST is among the middle of the pack in Fantasy points, ranking 16th, but they are starting in only eight percent of the leagues on CBSSports.com. They are not an elite unit by any means, but they could be worth a shot in Week 15, given their recent success and their upcoming opponent.
News: The Lions' defense gave the Packers fits all day in a 7-3 win in Week 14. Green Bay's three points were a season low, and their 258 yards of offense represented their second-lowest total of the year, with only the Jets holding them to fewer yards back in Week 8. The Lions kept the Packers' quarterbacks under pressure all afternoon, as they sacked QB Aaron Rodgers twice (and also knocked him out of the game with a concussion on a tackle) and replacement QB Matt Flynn another two times. The Lions also forced three turnovers -- two interceptions and a fumble -- in the game.
Analysis: The Lions' DST has been surprisingly productive this season, ranking 11th in the league in Fantasy points coming into Week 14. They face Tampa Bay -- a team that ranks in the bottom 12 in points scored and yardage -- in Week 15. They could be worth a try in the coming scoring period if they are available in your league.
News: The Lions DST comes into Week 14 ranked as the 11th most productive unit in the league, yet they are active in only seven percent of leagues on CBSSports.com. While they may be an underutilized unit in Fantasy, Week 14 is not the time to give them a try. They will host the Packers, who rank seventh in the league in points scored and ninth in offensive yardage.
Analysis: The Lions DST could be a good pickup for the season's final three weeks, as they go on to face the Buccaneers, Dolphins and Vikings, but now is not the time to activate them or pick them up. Avoid this unit in all but the deepest formats for Week 14.
News: The Lions DST gave up 311 yards to the Bears in the Week 13 24-20 home loss. The Lions DST forced just one turnover, a Jay Cutler fumble. The Lions DST did manage four sacks of Cutler in the game, with Cliff Avril getting three of them.
Analysis: The Lions DST have been poor all season and they really didn't do too much good in Week 13 as they dropped the game. Detroit plays Green Bay in Week 14 and the Packers just decimated the 49ers. We don't like the Lions DST's chances. Find a better option for Week 14.
News: The Lions DST had an embarrassing effort on Thanksgiving against New England. The unit allowed 45 points and 447 yards of offense and all it could muster was one Ndamukong Suh sack. Will things get better Week 13 at home against Chicago? Things haven't been good for a while for the Lions DST. The unit has not recorded double-digit Fantasy points in four straight games.
Analysis: The Lions DST has been dismal pretty much all season and we don't believe they'll improve enough Week 13 against the Bears to be worth using in Fantasy play. The Bears are middle of the road at limiting opposing Fantasy DST units' points, but have been much better of late with Jay Cutler doing a much better job taking care of the football. Cutler is always a threat to throw a few picks, but we still don't think you should be starting the Lions DST Week 13.
News: There was nothing good about the Lions defense vs. the Patriots in Week 12. Save for one sack by rookie DT Ndamukong Suh, the defense couldn't stop Tom Brady from throwing four touchdowns and BenJarvus Green-Ellis from rushing for two more. Brady also threw for over 300 yards and the Patriots cumulatively ran for 109 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST continues to be an easy option to pass on week in and week out. Don't expect much from them when they host the Bears in Week 13.
News: The Lions DST struggled in Week 11 at Dallas on Sunday in a 35-19 loss. The Lions had two sacks and recovered a fumble but did little else. On special teams, the Lions had four kickoff returns from Stefan Logan for 96 yards and three punt returns for 15 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST is a low-end Fantasy option in the majority of leagues. Ignore the Lions DST in Week 12 against New England on Thanksgiving Day.
News: The Lions DST has struggled the past two games against the Jets and Buffalo heading into Week 11 at Dallas. They only have 12 Fantasy points in those two outings, and now they face a Cowboys team coming off an impressive victory against the Giants. The reason for Detroit's struggles the past two games has been its pass rush with only two sacks. The Lions also have just one interception while allowing 37 points over that span.
Analysis: Detroit could be in trouble against Dallas, especially facing two former players in Jon Kitna and Roy E. Williams. We don't expect the Lions DST to play well in this matchup, and they are not worth using in the majority of leagues.
News: The Lions defense, which allowed an average of 315.8 yards during a five-game stretch from Week 3 to Week 8 before giving up 437 yards and 23 points to the Jets last week, rebounded to a degree against an improving Bills offense Week 10 at Buffalo. The Lions allowed 14 points on 290 yards, recording a sack and recovering a fumble.
Analysis: The Lions allowed under 300 yards in a game for the third time this season, but they had trouble slowing down RB Fred Jackson, who ran for 133 yards on 25 carries. The Lions DST didn't get many sacks, which are usually what carries it in Fantasy, but it showed it's still worth using in the right matchups. Against a rejuvenated Cowboys team Week 11 at Dallas, you might want to treat it as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Lions defense, which allowed an average of 315.8 yards during a five-game stretch from Week 3 to Week 8 before giving up 437 yards and 23 points to the Jets last week, will look to rebound against an 0-8 team Week 10 at Buffalo. But the Bills have been no slouch since Ryan Fitzpatrick took over as the starting quarterback in Week 3. He's averaging 249.8 yards and 2.2 touchdowns in his six starts. The Lions rank 22nd against the pass, allowing 233.2 yards per game. They're not so hot against the run either, ranking 27th with 127.9 yards per game.
Analysis: The Lions have a high number of sacks, which makes their DST a little more usable in Fantasy than their rankings would indicate, but this matchup isn't as favorable as it seems. The Bills allow 10.1 Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs, which is only the 15th-most in the league. You can get by with the Lions DST if you're struggling to find one, but it's more like a high-end No. 2 Fantasy option than a clear-cut No. 1 this week.
News: The Lions DST could not stop the Jets when it mattered most in the Week 9 overtime 23-20 loss. The Lions DST allowed New York to rack up 424 total yards of offense in the game. They did force two turnovers, however, as Mark Sanchez threw an interception and Braylon Edwards lost a fumble. The Lions DST came up with just one sack, though, and did not record a defensive touchdown. Alphonso Smith came up with the interception. It was his fifth interception in his last six games.
Analysis: The Lions DST sacked Donovan McNabb and Rex Grossman of the Redskins seven times in Week 8 and scored a touchdown. There was no such luck in the Week 9 game. The Jets did a much better job keeping Sanchez on his feet than did the Redskins with McNabb and Sanchez did a solid job taking care of the football. The Lions DST have had a few solid weeks and have been a better Fantasy DST than most would believe. Playing at Buffalo in Week 10, we think the Lions DST can be used in plenty of Fantasy leagues.
News: The Lions DST has been playing some defense at home in recent weeks. Entering the Week 9 game hosting the Jets, Detroit's previous two home games produced monster figures for the DST. Playing the Rams in Week 5 and the Redskins last week, the Lions DST totaled three interceptions, two forced fumbles, eight sacks and three defensive touchdowns in those games. Don't look now but the Lions have played well against the pass of late and they've defended the run fairly well, too. They'll need their A-game when they play at the Jets in Week 9, however, especially against the run. "(LaDainian Tomlinson) is an exceptional back, said defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. "He's having a great year. He's very elusive, smart. (RB Shonn) Greene is a power runner. The change up between the two of them makes (the Jets) really tough to defend."
Analysis: The Lions DST have been a No. 1 Fantasy unit this season in terms of total Fantasy points and have only been improving, especially with the play of Ndamukong Suh. Unfortunately, they will be facing a Jets team that has made few mistakes this season. The Jets are allowing the fourth-least average Fantasy points per game to opposing DSTs. The Jets have yet to allow a defensive or special teams touchdown all season and do not turn the ball over readily. Because the Jets are so good at holding onto the ball, we can only call the Lions DST a borderline unit worth starting in Week 9. There might be better matchups out there for lesser DSTs that would make more sense.

News: Not only did the Lions DST limit the Redskins to one rushing and one receiving touchdown and keep Washington to 334 total yards of offense, but they scored late thanks to a Ndamukong Suh fumble recovery off of Rex Grossman's hands returned for a touchdown. The Lions' defensive front was all over Grossman and Donovan McNabb, totaling six sacks with an interception and a forced fumble. Additionally, KR Stefan Logan was close to returning several kickoffs for touchdowns.
Analysis: Don't look now but the Lions have played well against the pass of late and they've defended the run fairly well, too. They'll need their A-game when they play at the Jets in Week 9; owners shouldn't commit to the Lions DST without studying their other options first even with the New York offense playing poorly in Week 8.
News: With the Redskins coming to Ford Field on Sunday, the Lions DST might not be such a weak option. For starters, Washington is averaging 332.7 yards per game (slightly below the league average) and 18.6 points per game. While Donovan McNabb hasn't had consistent success though the air, the Redskins' run game has gotten going with Ryan Torain. McNabb has thrown seven interceptions vs. six touchdown passes this year but the Redskins as a team have lost two fumbles (none by McNabb or Torain).
Analysis: The Lions defense has gotten a bit better over the last couple of weeks and they're coming off a bye, so there's a shot that they can create some turnovers and keep the Redskins pinned down. If you're desperate for a DST in Week 8, consider the Lions.
News: The Lions allowed 28 points and 334 total yards of offense in Week 6 at the Giants. They sacked Giants QB Eli Manning twice in the game and forced one turnover in the game, coming off a fumbled snap by punter Matt Dodge. They held Manning to under 200 yards passing, but he did manage two touchdown passes and did not throw an interception. Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 133 yards against them and Brandon Jacobs scored twice.
Analysis: The Lions were unable to force Eli Manning into throwing an interception despite the fact that he entered the game with eight and had thrown at least one in four of five games. While there are signs that the Lions defense is headed in the right direction with play-makers like Ndamukong Suh and Louis Delmas, they aren't quite ready for Fantasy use outside of dire situations and when they are facing favorable matchups. In Week 7, they won't be helpful in any league as they will be on a bye. They'll take on the Redskins at home in Week 8.
News: The Lions face a tough matchup in Week 6 on the road when they take on the New York Giants. The will be up against the No. 5 offense in the NFL, a team averaging 378 yards per game. The Giants are averaging 21.2 points per game.
Analysis: One good thing the Lions have going for them in Week 5 is that Giants QB Eli Manning has thrown eight interceptions in five games with at least two in three of those games. The Giants are coming off a 34-point, 414-yard drubbing of the Houston Texans, however, and we don't recommend rolling the dice this week with the Lions if it can be avoided.
News: The Lions allowed the Rams to roll up 341 total net yards, but otherwise, their defense and special teams enjoyed a very good afternoon in Week 5 in a 44-6 win. The Rams mustered only six points of offense, while the Lions' special teams racked up six points of their own on a 105-yard kickoff return by Stefan Logan -- the longest play in the NFL so far this season -- to start off the second quarter. The defense intercepted Rams QB Sam Bradford twice, including a pick by DB Alphonso Smith that he ran back 42 yards for a touchdown. The Lions' defense also recorded one sack and recovered a Danny Amendola fumble in the game.
Analysis: The matchup against the Rams promised to be a good one for the Lions' DST, and it worked out as advertised. In Week 6, they will face the Giants' offense, which came into Week 5 with the sixth-highest yardage total in the league. The Lions DST is not a recommended start for the coming week.
News: After a tough matchup in Week 4 against the Packers, the Lions DST will face the Rams in Week 5. While the Rams have not done a terrible job of racking up yards, they have scored 29 fewer points than Green Bay over the first four weeks. Neither their running game nor their passing game ranks in the top half of the league's teams in terms of yardage, and they have sustained 10 sacks. The Lions' defense has 13 sacks on the year, tied for fifth-best in the league.
Analysis: The Lions may be able to have one of their better weeks defensively in Week 5, as they can take advantage of the Rams' O-line. However, even with a decent matchup, the Lions are no more than a No. 2 DST.
News: It took the Lions one half to slow down Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, but it was still too little, too late in a 28-26 loss in Week 4. Rodgers feasted on the Lions for three first-half touchdowns, as he completed 8 of 9 passes for 131 yards. After halftime it was a different story. Rodgers was just 4 of 8 for 50 yards and two interceptions. The Lions held Green Bay to 261 yards in the game. Detroit forced four turnovers (two fumbles on kickoffs) and sacked Rodgers twice. Green Bay won the game on a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown by Charles Woodson in the third quarter.
Analysis: It has been a rough start to the season for the Lions defense. They have held just one opponent under 20 points and even then Chicago still put 19 points on the board in Week 1. There are instances where we see Detroit trying to turn the corner, but it is still struggling to put a total effort together for an entire game. The Lions play the Rams in Week 5. Even with a rookie QB at the helm for St. Louis, it's tough to recommend the Lions DST in Fantasy leagues for Week 5.
News: As Detroit gears up to play Green Bay in Week 4, the Lions have done little to slow down Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, who has thrown for more than 300 yards in each of his four starts against Detroit with 11 touchdowns and one interception. Rodgers is playing like the West Coast offense quarterbacks, the good ones. I cant say enough good things about him. Hes got a great arm, he can move and he presents a lot of problems," said Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. Detroit (0-3) hasn't shown much progress defensively in 2010. The Lions rank 30th in the league in total defense (413.7 ypg) and last against the run. They intercepted Brett Favre twice last in Week 3 at Minnesota but couldn't score in the second half of a 24-10 loss -- their 22nd consecutive road defeat, two shy of their own NFL record set from 2001-03. Sadly, their Week 4 game is also on the road.
Analysis: The Packers have won nine consecutive meetings overall with Detroit, which hasn't won at Lambeau Field since a 21-17 victory Dec. 15, 1991. The odds seem stacked against Detroit putting on a good show in Week 4. To its advantage, the Packers have struggled to run the football since Ryan Grant (ankle) suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1. However, Rodgers is moving the ball successfully through the air and Green Bay is coming off a disappointing loss in Week 3, so it will look to take out its frustration on Detroit. Try to avoid starting the Lions DST in Week 4.
News: The Lions allowed 24 points and 368 net yards of offense in a Week 3 loss at Minnesota. They intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble while sacking Vikings QB Brett Favre once in the game. They knocked him to the ground six times in the game, however.
Analysis: The Lions came into Week 3 owned in just five percent of CBSSports.com leagues. While they have some nice building blocks in players like Ndamukong Suh and could be a much better unit down the line, they aren't yet a trustworthy group in Fantasy. We certainly won't recommend them against one of the best offenses in the NFL in Week 4 at Green Bay.
News: The Lions will travel to Minnesota in Week 3 to face a Vikings offense that has managed just 19 points combined over their first two games. Fantasy owners, however, have been wise to stay away from Detroit's defense in the first two weeks of the season after which they rank 30th in the NFL in total yards allowed. In Week 2, they allowed five touchdowns to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Analysis: The Lions have a decent young core of players for the future, anchored by rookie Ndamukong Suh who has gotten off to a good start this year. However, the unit is not cohesive enough at this time that we would recommend them against a Vikings offense led by Adrian Peterson and Brett Favre. They may be struggling early on, yes, but they have also been up against two above-average defenses. To expect another weak showing from Favre, Peterson and Associates would be playing with fire in Week 3.
News: The Lions prepared all week to faceoff against Eagles QB Michael Vick, who replaced an injured Kevin Kolb (concussion) in Week 2. They might have prepared but it still wasn't enough to slow down the athletically-gifted QB. Vick led Philadelphia on five touchdown drives in a 35-32 win against the Lions. Vick threw a pair of touchdowns, while LeSean McCoy rushed for three more. The Eagles gained 409 yards on the afternoon. Detroit came away with six sacks but forced no turnovers.
Analysis: The Lions defense allowed a ton of yards in Week 1 to the Bears and allowed a ton of yards in Week 2 against the Eagles. It's not surprising seeing how Detroit hasn't been very good on defense for years. But it is disappointing to see little improvement with their head coach -- Jim Schwartz -- cutting his teeth as a defensive coach. The Lions are set to face a Vikings team in Week 3 that is upset after an 0-2 start. Don't start the Lions DST.
News: The Lions are bracing for the challenge of trying to contain Eagles QB Michael Vick, who is expected to start in the event Kevin Kolb (concussion) is unable to play in Week 2. "We have to make sure he doesn't have any running lanes, which is going to be very difficult for us because he's an exceptional athlete," Lions LB Julian Peterson told The Sports Xchange.
Analysis: The Lions might have only allowed 19 points in Week 1, but the Bears totaled 463 yards. QB Jay Cutler, who is not a scrambling QB, passed for 372 yards, so clearly the Lions still have weaknesses on defense that the Eagles could expose. You would be hard-pressed to want to start the Lions DST in Week 2.
News: The Lions DST gave up 46 yards of total offense to the Bears on Sunday, but Detroit still had its moments. The Lions had four sacks, three fumble recoveries and one interception. On special teams, Stefan Logan had three kickoff returns for 68 yards and two punt returns for 3 yards. The Lions also had 60 tackles.
Analysis: Detroit's defense took advantage of Chicago's mistakes, but the Lions DST isn't a good unit for Fantasy owners. Keep the Lions DST in reserve for Week 2 against the Eagles.
News: Lions rookie DL Ndamukong Suh has been in camp for less than a week, but head coach Jim Schwartz is pleased with his progress. "He's caught up quickly," Schwartz said. "The first couple of days, his head was swimming. He reverted back to the technique he used at Nebraska. Now you're seeing him hit his stride. He's a bit behind, but he's gaining ground."
Analysis: Suh was taken second overall in the draft to immediately help a team that finished dead last in the NFL in 2009 in total yards per game (392.1) and 25th in rush defense (126.6). The addition of veteran DL Kyle Vanden Bosch can also help improve a weak defense. We aren't sure what kind of strides the Detroit defense can take in 2010, so we still caution against drafting the Lions DST. Suh will be a popular Fantasy pick in the late rounds in IDP leagues, but remember he is a defensive tackle and he will be facing a lot better interior offensive lineman in the NFL than in college. View Suh as more of a long-term Fantasy keeper.
News: Former Pro Bowl CB Dre' Bly is returning to Detroit. The Lions said Friday that the unrestricted free agent has signed a two-year deal. Additional terms weren't released. Bly spent four seasons in Detroit after signing as an unrestricted free agent in 2003. He made the Pro Bowl after the 2003 and 2004 seasons before he was traded to Denver following the 2006-07 season for two players and a draft pick. He was released by the Broncos in February 2009 and played 16 games last year with San Francisco, starting six. Bly made 26 solo tackles for the 49ers, along with a sack and three interceptions. Detroit also released cornerback Paul Pratt.
Analysis: Bly isn't going to turn the Lions DST into a quality Fantasy option. They should still be ignored in the majority of leagues on Draft Day in 2010.
News: The offseason additions the Lions made to improve their defensive line seem to be paying off. Rookie DT Ndamukong Suh has been showing improvement according to teammate Kyle Vanden Bosch, and DE Cliff Avril has also been displaying some good moves. Cumulatively, the D-line forced two hurries and had two sacks within the first five plays of team drills. Coach Jim Schwartz applauded his team's defensive effort during the OTA, but was quick to downplay its' long-term expectations. "It was a no pad workout," he said. "The true evaluations of the D-Line will be in camp when we see everything they can do on a field."
Analysis: We believe that the Lions' defensive line could help push the unit out of the basement of Fantasy DSTs this season. While the Lions DST shouldn't be drafted, they should be considered for one-week use off waivers during the year. They could have some surprises in store.
News: The Lions' defense instantly got better when they drafted Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Suh is expected to start right away for the Lions and be a big part of the improved Lions' defensive line. The first defensive lineman to be a Heisman Trophy finalist since 1994, Suh recorded a career-best 85 tackles (52 solos) with 12 sacks, 24 stops for loss and 26 pressures in 2009 with three blocked kicks. The Lions also added Iowa CB Amari Spievey (third round) and N.C. State DE Willie Young (seventh round).
Analysis: Suh is a disruptive interior force who will make a big difference for the Lions' run defense in 2010. The Lions won't suddenly become a useful Fantasy DST just because he's there, but they're a lot closer to being a sleeper and an attractive option off waivers during the season than they were when last year ended.
News: The Detroit Lions have traded two late-round draft picks to acquire cornerback Chris Houston from the Atlanta Falcons. Houston, a second-round pick for Atlanta in 2007, became expendable after the Falcons signed Dunta Robinson as an unrestricted free agent. The Falcons will receive an additional sixth-round pick from Detroit and move up from the 18th spot to second in the fifth round. Houston has three interceptions and one forced fumble in 44 career games, 37 starts.
Analysis: The Lions defense has taken some steps to get better this offseason as Houston joins pass rushing end Kyle Vanden Bosch and defensive tackle Corey Williams as additions. The Lions are also expected to draft a defensive lineman with the No. 2 overall pick in late April. They're a long way from being a serious DST option, but they're getting close to being worth a look as a one-week replacement off waivers.
News: The Detroit Lions are beefing up their defensive line. One of the worst teams in the NFL acquired defensive tackle Corey Williams from the Browns in a move that also involved a pair of late-round draft picks. They also agreed to a four-year deal with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch. The deal reportedly is $26 million with $10 million due in the first year for the 31-year-old defensive end. In other news, the Lions announced that they have released CB Phillip Buchanon and DT Grady Jackson.
Analysis: They'll likely add another defensive lineman in the 2010 NFL Draft, so expectations are high for their run defense this season. Keep in mind, however, that the Lions still have a flawed secondary and play in a division against Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler. They're nothing more than a low-end one-week replacement option off waivers during the season.
News: The Lions DST gave up 37 points and 418 yards to the Bears in a Week 17 loss. Detroit failed to force a turnover and had just a pair of sacks.
Analysis: Mercifully, the Lions DST's season is over. They were one of the league's worst units all season and should be ignored in all drafts this summer.
News: The Lions defense was able to contain the San Francisco offense reasonably well on Sunday in a 20-6 loss. They managed to create one turnover, with Sammie Lee Hill recovering a Frank Gore fumble. On the ground, the Niners racked up only 84 yards on 32 carries, scoring one touchdown. QB Alex Smith was limited to 230 yards and a touchdown through the air on 20 for 31 passing.
Analysis: The Lions defense was better than it normally is on Sunday against San Francisco, but its not like they turned too many heads either. In Week 17, the Lions defense takes on a Chicago team that scored 48 points against them in Week 4. Although the Bears have struggled offensively most of the season, Detroit is still not a recommended option Week 17.
News: In the Lions' Week 15 loss vs. the Cardinals, the DST recorded a touchdown thanks to a 100-yard interception return by Louis Delmas and also had two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.
Analysis: The Lions DST is nowhere near as good as other DSTs around the league. Keep them benched for Week 16 at San Francisco.
News: The Lions defense allowed more than 40 points for the third time this season on Sunday in a 48-3 drubbing at the hands of the Ravens. The Lions gave up 240 yards through the air as QB Joe Flacco was out of the game after the third quarter because the game was out of reach. On the ground, Ray Rice led a rushing attack that racked up 308 yards on 40 attempts. The Lions defense failed to record a sack but Larry Foote did force a Rice fumble that went through the back of the end zone for a touchback.
Analysis: The Lions defense has been terrible this season and the Ravens offense certainly exposed them in Week 14. It could be another long game in Week 15 against a high-powered Cardinals offense. Keep the Lions DST off all Fantasy rosters for Fantasy Week 15.
News: The Detroit defense had a fair game on Sunday in a Week 13 loss to the Bengals. Bengals QB Carson Palmer threw for only 220 yards and a touchdown in the game and was intercepted by Anthony Henry and William James. On the ground, Cedric Benson led a rushing attack that gained 19 yards on 44 attempts.
Analysis: The Lions defense is often times battered by its opponents and is rarely worth using. Do not have them active for Week 14 at Baltimore.
News: Playing on Thanksgiving vs. the Packers, the Lions defense totaled a sack, two forced fumbles and a safety. Green Bay threw for nearly 350 yards in the game and scored 27 of their 34 points on the Detroit defense.
Analysis: The Lions DST is hardly worth using week in and week out. Leave them on waivers for Week 13 at Cincinnati.
News: The Lions defense was torched by opposing QB Brady Quinn on Sunday in a Week 11 win over the Browns. Quinn threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns in the game, completing 21 of his 33 passes. On the ground, Jamal Lewis led a rushing attack that gained 131 yards on 40 carries. Quinn was sacked only once in the game by Larry Foote who led the team with 12 tackles. The Lions defense failed to create a turnover in the game.
Analysis: Week 11 was a shootout with the offenses dominating for both teams. The Lions continue to struggle to shut down other teams, allowing at least 27 points in each of the units past three games. The Lions take on Green Bay Week 12 on Thanksgiving. In Week 6, the Lions allowed 26 points to the Packers.
News: The Lions DST had two fumble recoveries Sunday at Minnesota with one sack, but they did little else. Derrick Williams led the way on special teams with three kickoff returns for 75 yards, and Dennis Northcutt had two punt returns for 19 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST is a low-end option, but they might be worth using in Week 11 against Cleveland. In deep leagues, consider using the Lions at home against the Browns.
News: The Lions' defense was picked apart by Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck on Sunday in a Week 9 32-20 loss at Seattle. Hasselbeck was 39 for 51 passing in the game, gaining 329 yards in the game. He threw for one TD and was interceted once by Louis Delmas. On the ground, the Seahawks gained only 55 yards and a TD. Jordon Dizon had a sack in the game and forced a fumble. Kevin Hobbs also forced a fumble in the game.
Analysis: The Lions defense is not too good and again got torched Week 9 by the Seahawks. They continue to allow far too many points to be recommended outside of the very deepest of leagues. The Vikings offense will likely destroy the Lions' defense in Week 10 as they scored 27 points in the teams' first meeting back in wEek 2.
News: The Detroit DST allowed 17 points in the team's 17-10 loss to the Rams. Marc Bulger went 17 for 35 in the game against the defense, throwing an interception and failing to throw a TD. However, PK Josh Brown did throw for a TD pass on a fake field goal. On the ground, Steven Jackson torched the Lions' run defense for 149 yards on the ground and his first TD of the year. The Lions failed to sack Bulger in the game and only Dewayne White was able to get an interception.
Analysis: The Lions' defense is not too good and the only reason they were picked up in a few leagues this week is because they were facing a poor Rams offense. The Lions DST is not a recommended Fantasy unit for Week 9 at Seattle.
News: Detroit's DST did not have a great game on Sunday in Week 6 against the Packers, but they did manage to sack Aaron Rodgers five times. The Lions gave up 358 total yards through the air, with Rodgers throwing two TD passes. The Packers also gained 107 yards on the ground on 30 attempts with Ryan Grant accounting for 90 of the yards.
Analysis: The Lions have one of the worst defenses in the league and the fact that their offense struggles to stay on the field does not help things. The unit has a bye in Week 7 then face a lackluster St. Louis offense in Week 8. They won't likely be a recommended unit for that game either.
News: The Lions allowed 28 points and 344 total net offensive yards in Week 5 against Pittsburgh. They forced one interception in the game and recorded three sacks in the game.
Analysis: The Lions are not a team that is targeted much as a source for defensive help in Fantasy and for good reason. They tend to give up a lot of points and yards and don't force many turnovers. Leave them on the waiver wire in all Fantasy leagues for Week 6 at Green Bay.
News: The Lions DST did little Sunday at Chicago. They had two sacks and two forced fumbles but allowed 48 points and 276 total yards. On special teams, Aaron Brown had eight kickoff returns for 148 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST doesn't make many plays on a weekly basis and wasn't expected to do much against the Bears. Ignore the Lions DST in Week 5 against the Steelers.
News: Detroit defeated the Washington Redskins for their first win since 2007 and they did so convincingly with a 19-14 win. The Lions DST allowed the Redskins to rack up a game-high 390 yards but many of those came late as QB Jason Campbell scrambled frantically to gain big yardage. The Lions sacked Campbell just once in the game and Ko Simpson got the game's only interception. Washington did fumble twice but they recovered each time.
Analysis: The Lions did a nice job gaining the victory but the DST was still mediocre at best. Detroit had just one sack and one turnover and really didn't limit Washington's yardage in the game. It isn't going to get any easier in Week 4 at Chicago. Jay Cutler could torch them so we don't really recommend using the Lions DST in Week 4.
News: Lions coach Jim Schwartz says there's a good chance linebacker Ernie Sims will miss some time with a "fairly significant" shoulder injury. Sims has made 14 tackles for Detroit (0-2) this season. He was injured in Sunday's loss to Minnesota and has not missed a game since the Lions drafted him three years ago. Schwartz says he does not know how long Sims will be out, adding Sims does have more than a day-to-day injury. The Lions host the Redskins this weekend.
Analysis: With Washington poised to run quite a bit on the Lions, this certainly doesn't help the DST unit. Of course, no one was counting on the Lions DST for Fantasy help anyway. Keep them on waivers and off of rosters.
News: The Lions (0-2) looked like they might win for the first time since 2007 when they had a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter Week 2 against the Vikings, but lost their 19th straight game, 27-13, to tie the second-longest skid in NFL history. The Chicago Cardinals, in the 1940s, and the Oakland Raiders, in the 1960s, also lost 19 straight. The defense kept RB Adrian Peterson and QB Brett Favre in check until Minnesota got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown from TE Visanthe Shiancoe in the second quarter. Minnesota then reeled off 27 unanswered points. Minnesota finished with 265 total yards. The Lions had three sacks and one fumble recovery.
Analysis: Detroit, which became the NFL's first 0-16 team last season, will desperately hope it doesn't approach Tampa Bay's record of 26 losses in a row set during the 1976-77 seasons. It hosts the Washington Redskins next week. The Redskins don't have a high-powered offense, but the Lions defense is still a bit of a mess. You could possibly start them as a sleeper DST, but you are taking a risk in Fantasy.
News: The Lions allowed 358 yards passing and six touchdowns in Week 1 against Saints QB Drew Brees. Mike Bell rushed for 143 yards and Reggie Bush added 14 more yards on the ground in a game in which New Orleans scored 45 points. The Lions failed to record a sack, but did force two turnovers (one fumble and one interception).
Analysis: The Lions defense figures to be in for a lot of rough afternoons this season and while not every offense will be as potent as the Saints, we likely will not be recommending the team in Fantasy leagues often. We certainly won't recommend them in Week 2 against Minnesota.
News: Detroit Lions safety Daniel Bullocks was placed on injured reserve Thursday after he cleared waivers, sidelining him for the season. The four-year veteran has missed most of training camp with a knee injury and was placed on injured reserve waivers late Wednesday, but no franchise claimed him before the 4 p.m. deadline.
Analysis: Bullocks, a second-round selection in 2006, missed the entire 2007 season with a knee injury but rebounded to record 121 tackles in 15 starts last year. While Bullocks will be missed in Fantasy IDP leagues it's not like his presence would have made the Lions DST that much better. They are still a work in progress and can be ignored in Fantasy.
News: Detroit acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson on Saturday from the Seattle Seahawks for defensive tackle Cory Redding and a fifth-round pick in next month's NFL draft. Both players must pass physicals to complete the trade. Peterson became expendable in Seattle when the Seahawks asked him to reduce his $6.5 million salary for 2009 and he refused. He'll likely play along the outside for the Lions.
Analysis: Give credit to new Lions coach Jim Schwartz for piecing together a veteran defense this offseason. The Peterson deal is the latest move the club has made as they've also signed DT Grady Jackson, CB Phillip Buchanon and CB Eric King. The team still has plenty of defensive issues to solve, but they're headed in the right direction. Still, the Lions don't warrant drafting this summer and are only worth a look off the waiver wire as a one-week replacement when they have a favorable matchup.
News: The Detroit Lions signed unrestricted free-agent defensive tackle Grady Jackson to a three-year contract and free-agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon to a two-year deal Wednesday. The 6-foot-2, 345-pound Jackson played most of the past three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. In 2008, Jackson started 15 games and had 23 tackles (21 solo) and two sacks for the Falcons. Buchanon, 28, started all 16 games for Tampa Bay last season, intercepting two passes and returning one for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Lions defense has also added CB Eric King this offseason and new head coach Jim Schwartz and Co. seem to be diligently adding good players. However, no one will take a chance on this DST on Draft Day, so continue to view the Lions as a potential one-week replacement off the waiver wire.
News: The Lions announced Thursday that Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will be their new head coach. Schwartz has run the Titans defense for the last eight years and has consistently put out a good unit on the field. He had been with the Titans since 1999 when he joined as a defensive assistant. The Titans defense was especially effective in 2008 thanks to talent across the board, especially up front, which is where the Lions will probably look to rebuild their defense first in 2009.
Analysis: Schwartz isn't the most appealing option the Lions could have had, but he's a diligent coach who has bided his time with the Titans and parlayed it into this gig. Speculation on who his offensive coordinator will be is under way, and with so many years spent in Tennessee, it's a safe bet that someone from the Titans organization past or present will be there. This doesn't help the Lions DST improve in Fantasy value, but it's a step in the right direction.
News: As expected, the Lions have fired head coach Rod Marinelli and nearly his entire coaching staff following their NFL-worst 0-16 season, according to NFL Network. Marinelli, a defensive-minded coach, couldn't rely on old Tampa Bay veterans to play in his Cover-2 scheme defense this season.
Analysis: The Lions defense was atrocious in 2008 and has a huge overhaul job ahead of them. Aside from a couple of young players, there's not much to build around, and the Lions will have to be patient in rebuilding their defense. You can assume that the Lions DST will be no better than a low-end bye-week replacement option in 2009.
News: The Lions DST allowed 31 points to score against them in a 31-21 loss that sealed the first-ever 0-16 season in the history of the NFL. The Packers went for 484 net yards on one of the worst defensive units.
Analysis: The Lions DST was awful in 2008 and right now we have no reason to believe it will be any better in 2009. They probably won't be drafted in most leagues next season.
News: Detroit was trying to avoid being the first team to start a season at 0-15 in Week 16 against the Saints at home. They did no such thing. The Saints won the game 42-7 and the Lions DST could not stop Drew Brees and company. The Lions DST gave up 532 total yards and forced just one turnover, which came on a fumble. Did they get any sacks of Brees? The answer, my friend, is no.
Analysis: The Lions DST is typically awful, so this performance shouldn't have come as a surprise. In Green Bay in Week 17, do not start the Lions DST.
News: At Indianapolis in Week 15, the Lions defense allowed 31 points on 421 yards. It recorded only one sack and recovered two fumbles.
Analysis: The Lions DST is typically awful, so this performance shouldn't have come as a surprise. The Lions host one of the better offenses in the league Week 16 against the Saints, so leave their DST on waivers.
News: Detroit almost won its first game of the season in Week 14 against the Vikings. Minnesota needed 10 points in the fourth quarter to win 20-16. The Lions DST allowed just 298 yards of offense after knocking starter Gus Frerotte out of the game. They forced two turnovers, both interceptions from Frerotte. Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson were sacked twice in the game.
Analysis: The Lions DST continues to be one of the league's worst units and should not be starting in any formats when they go to Indianapolis in Week 15. The Colts offense is running on all cylinders right now and should destroy the Lions.
News: In the Lions' 47-10 loss vs. the Titans on Thanksgiving as part of Week 13 action, the DST was slammed by the Titans' run game and were on the field for a while. In total, the Lions had one sack and one forced fumble.
Analysis: Start the Lions DST? Only if you're feeling really gutsy. This unit has been awful all year and they're unlikely to change down the stretch. Don't use them vs. the Vikings in Week 14.
News: The Lions gave up 38 points and 255 yards in a Week 12 loss to the Buccaneers. They made one sack and recovered two Jeff Garcia fumbles, returning one of them for a touchdown.
Analysis: The Lions DST continues to be one of the league's worst units and should not be starting in any formats when they host Tennessee on Thanksgiving.
News: Detroit is still without a win this season after the Panthers defeated them in Week 11, 31-22. The Lions DST allowed 362 yards of offense to the Panthers and forced a single turnover as Steve Smith lost a fumble. Detroit did not sack Carolina QB Jake Delhomme once in the game.
Analysis: The Lions had made a sack in every game this season but even that trend ended in Week 11 against Carolina. They were bad before and they are quite bad now. They give up a ton of yards and don't force many turnovers, so continue to ignore them in Week 12 against Tampa Bay.
News: The Lions DST allowed 38 points and 384 yards to the Jaguars in a Week 10 loss, and only made one sack.
Analysis: The Lions have made a sack in every game this season, but unfortunately you only get one point for those in most leagues. They give up a ton of yards and don't force many turnovers, so continue to ignore them in Week 11 at Carolina.
News: The Lions gave up 27 points on 320 yards Week 9 at Chicago, finishing with one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery. They entered the game with multiple sacks in three straight games.
Analysis: The Lions DST still hasn't gone without a sack all season, but it usually gives up too many points to pay off in Fantasy. Don't bother with it Week 10 against the Jaguars.
News: The Detroit Lions played the Washington Redskins tough on Sunday of Week 8 but Washington ultimately pulled out the victory, 25-17. The Lions DST allowed Washington to gain 439 total yards and could not stop much of their offensive attack, although they did limit the end zone visits. Washington turned the ball over once when Detroit forced Jason Campbell to fumble early in the game. There were no interceptions for the Lions but they did sack Campbell three times. Dewayne White picked up 1.5 sacks, Cory Redding had the other half and Cliff Avril had the other full sack.
Analysis: The Lions actually held a halftime lead in this one but that was more for Washington's conservative play calling and less the Lions DST. Detroit is at Chicago in Week 9. The Lions are the worst defense in the league, and shouldn't be relied upon in any Fantasy league.
News: The Lions DST gave up 28 points and 404 yards to the Texans in a Week 7 loss. They did make three sacks and recovered a fumble. Houston got 274 of their yards in the first half.
Analysis: The Texans got out to an early lead in this game and then sort of shut off the offense a little in the second half, barely holding on for a victory. The Lions are the worst defense in the league, and shouldn't be relied upon in any Fantasy league during Week 8's game with the Redskins.
News: The Lions held the Vikings to just 12 points, but gave up 392 total yards in Week 6 at Minnesota. They intercepted one pass and recovered two fumbles. They sacked Gus Frerotte five times in the game.
Analysis: This was by far Detroit's most productive game defensively of the season. Consider them still too risky to start for Week 7 at Houston. Let them show some sort of consistency before you add them off the waiver wire. They've been a horrible unit all season.
News: The Lions DST totaled one sack and one forced fumble in Week 5 vs. the Bears.
Analysis: The Lions DST isn't a recommended option, and that goes double when they play at the Vikings in Week 6. Keep 'em off Fantasy rosters.
News: The Lions will be coming off their bye week to face the Chicago Bears in Week 5. The Bears are averaging 309 yards and 23.5 points per game.
Analysis: The Lions allowed 370 yards of total offense in Week 3 at San Francisco, leading to 31 points. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game and are not playing at a level that would make them useful in any Fantasy league right now.
News: The Lions allowed 370 yards of total offense in Week 3 at San Francisco, leading to 31 points. They did not force a turnover and had just one sack in the game.
Analysis: The Lions have allowed 48 points in Week 2, so this is a bit of an improvement. Clearly, the Lions are not playing at a level that would make them useful in any Fantasy league right now. They won't be starting in any league for Week 4 because they'll be on a bye. But they probably won't be starting in any leagues for Week 5 against Chicago either.
News: The Lions DST had one sack and no turnovers Sunday against Green Bay in a 48-25 loss. Mike Furrey had three punt returns for 27.9 yards, and the Lions combined for seven kickoff returns for 150 yards. The Lions also allowed 447 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST is not a good option in Fantasy leagues and should be ignored in Week 3 even though they are facing San Francisco.
News: The Lions DST allowed the Falcons and their rookie QB Matt Ryan a total of 474 yards on Sunday in Week 1. The Falcons put up 34 points and looked like they could go through the Lions like they were paper. Detroit picked up one sack and no interceptions.
Analysis: The Lions defense was absolutely pathetic. They were ranked high this week because they were playing a team that wasn't supposed to be good offensively. Yeah, they still were terrible. Don't start them, don't own them, don't think about them in Week 2 against Green Bay.
News: In Saturday's preseason contest against the Browns, the Lions DST looked fairly sharp. Unfortunately for Detroit, they couldn't accurately gauge their defense with some of Cleveland's biggest players being held out with injury. Starting QB Derek Anderson, RB Jamal Lewis and WR Braylon Edwards were all out and so the Lions had it a little easier with Brady Quinn under center. They allowed 250 total yards of offense including only 55 on the ground and hurried Quinn the entire time he was in the game. They came up with one sack and held the Browns to 0-for-2 in the Red Zone.
Analysis: The Lions defense was a bit shaky on Saturday considering they were facing less than Cleveland's top offensive effort. They aren't considered anything but a low-end Fantasy DST regardless and should probably be left for the waiver wire in Fantasy drafts.
News: Lions linebacker Ernie Sims missed Sunday's afternoon practice with injuries to his right leg. Sims said he "landed funny" during a morning drill but walked off the field after the practice session ended. Trainer Dean Kleinschmidt said the third-year veteran suffered a hyperextended knee and sprained ankle, but did not believe the injuries were serious. Sims, who led Detroit in tackles his first two seasons, is scheduled to see a doctor Monday.
Analysis: The last thing the Lions want to see is that one of their star defensive players going down early in camp. The team remains optimistic that the injuries are minor and let's hope they are right. Sims recorded 134 tackles, one sack, one interception and three forced fumbles in 2007. He has recorded two 100-tackle seasons since entering the NFL and has become a high-end Fantasy LB. Draft him as such until further notice. The Lions DST is not that great of a Fantasy option with Sims, and if they lose him for an extended period, don't even bother drafting them in Fantasy.
News: The Lions traded Shaun Rogers to the Browns for cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick in the April draft. The deal was announced Saturday by the Lions, a day after a trade with Cincinnati fell through. Bodden spent his first five seasons with the Browns. He has 208 career tackles, 12 interceptions, and three fumble recoveries but was expendable since he's looking for a new deal and the club didn't want to pay him.
Analysis: The Lions defense got off to a great start in the 2007 season, and that was reflected in their DST's weekly scoring. But they slumped toward the end of the season and limped into the offseason as a middle-of-the-road DST. In total, the Lions notched 37 sacks, 33 fumble recoveries, 17 interceptions, three defensive touchdowns and one special-teams touchdown. The Lions ended the year ranked 23rd against the run and 31st against the pass -- something Bodden will help. Losing Rogers will hurt along the defensive line, though the club might address that hole in the 2008 draft. Ultimately, this unit is still not worth reaching for on draft day.
News: The Lions signed free agent safety Dwight Smith to a two-year contract on Wednesday, likely cementing a starter on their defense in 2008. The 5-foot-10, 201-pound Smith played for the Buccaneers from 2001-2004, setting a Super Bowl record in 2002 by returning two interceptions for touchdowns. Those Bucs teams featured defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, now the head coach in Motown. Smith played for the Saints in 2005 and spent the past two seasons with the Vikings. In 106 games (75 starts), Smith has 22 interceptions and 464 tackles. He had four interceptions each of the past two seasons.
The Lions ended the year ranked 23rd against the run and 31st against the pass. Smith should help improve those standings a bit, but Fantasy owners shouldn't be interested in drafting this DST this summer.
News: The Lions defense got off to a great start in the 2007 season, and that was reflected in their DST's weekly scoring. But they slumped toward the end of the season and limped into the offseason as a middle-of-the-road DST. In total, the Lions notched 37 sacks, 33 fumble recoveries, 17 interceptions, three defensive touchdowns and one special-teams touchdown. The Lions ended the year ranked 23rd against the run and 31st against the pass.
Analysis: The Lions are planning to make significant changes on defense this offseason, but Fantasy owners shouldn't be interested in drafting this DST this summer unless those changes are truly impressive.
News: The Lions DST had no turnovers and one sack Sunday in the season finale at Green Bay.
Analysis: The Lions DST is a low-end Fantasy option and should not be drafted in any leagues in 2008.
News: The Lions allowed over 400 yards of total offense in Week 16 vs. Kansas City, giving up 20 points in the process. They forced one turnover in the game -- an interception that was returned 61 yards for a touchdown by Paris Lenon -- and had three sacks.
Analysis: The Lions have not been a very trustworthy defensive unit for Fantasy purposes and we don't recommend using them in any format for Week 17 at Green Bay despite the touchdown.
News: The Lions recorded no sacks and no turnovers at San Diego in Week 15, giving up 51 total points to the Chargers in the game.
Analysis: Once a startable unit in Fantasy play, the Lions DST has dwindled down to a low-end option. They'll have a shot at some numbers in Week 16 vs. the Chiefs, but don't expect too much.
News: The Lions DST had three sacks and a fumble recovery Sunday against Dallas. Aveion Cason was the leading kickoff return man with three for a 27-yard average, and Troy Walters had one punt return for 2 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST is a low-end Fantasy option and should not be used in Week 15 at San Diego. Walters, the main punt returner, left the game with a concussion, so check on his status.
News: The Lions DST will host Dallas in Week 14. The Cowboys have the second-best offense in the NFL, including third in the passing game and seventh on the ground.
Analysis: The Lions DST is 31st in the NFL in total defense, including 31st against the pass and 15th against the run. The Cowboys should tear this unit apart. Only the Patriots have scored more points per game than the Cowboys this season. Don't start the Lions DST in Fantasy play this week.
News: The Lions DST had one sack and one interception Sunday at Minnesota. Aveion Cason had six kickoff returns for a 26.8-yard average, and Mike Furrey had one punt return for 10 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST, D and ST units are not recommended options in Week 14 against Dallas, which has one of the best offenses in the NFL. Keep them reserved in all leagues.
News: The Lions DST travels to Minnesota to take on the 16th-ranked Vikings offense in Week 13. The Vikings have the 31st passing offense, but they do have the best running game in the league, averaging over 173 rushing yards per game.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 29th in total defense, including 31st against the pass and ninth against the run. We expect the Vikings to win this battle on offense, so only start the Lions DST as a No. 2 unit.
News: The Lions DST allowed 481 total yards (100 rushing and 381 passing) on Thanksgiving Day against Green Bay in Week 12. They recorded no sacks, but they did get one fumble recovery.
Analysis: The Lions DST should have a much better outing at Minnesota in Week 13. They should be a low-end starting DST in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Lions DST hosts QB Brett Favre and the Packers DST in a Turkey Day battle in Week 12.
Analysis: The Lions DST has been good at times, but also inconsistent. But the Packers have the best passing offense in the league and Favre should feast on this secondary. We don't recommend starting the Lions DST this week.
News: The Lions DST totaled two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles vs. the Giants in Week 11.
Analysis: Detroit's DST is not a recommended Fantasy play vs. the Packers in Week 12 on Thanksgiving Day. Sit them down for this Thursday's game.
News: The Lions DST will host the Giants' eighth-ranked offense on Sunday in Week 11. Eli Manning's group is rated 20th in passing and sixth in the ground game.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 26th in total defense (30th against the pass and eighth against the run). But the Lions do have 15 interceptions, which is the second-most in the NFL. Only consider starting this DST if you are in a larger league without a better matchup.
News: The Lions defense allowed 31 points to the Cardinals on 319 yards in Week 10, picking up two sacks and an interception. It did, however, recover three fumbles.
Analysis: The Lions special teams, meanwhile, gained 107 yards. While the 31 points allowed spelled a bad day for the Lions DST overall, the four turnovers and two sacks redeemed it somewhat. The Lions still have a solid defense for Fantasy purposes, even if they do give up a few too many points from time to time. We wouldn't recommend starting the Lions DST for Week 11 against the Giants, however.
News: The Lions DST had a huge Week 9 performance against the Broncos in which they scored a pair of DST touchdowns. Detroit travels to Arizona to face a Cardinals offense that is ranked 19th in the league, but has only given up just eight sacks.
Analysis: The Lions DST has improved over the past few weeks and this could be another opportunistic week for them. They rank 28th in total defense, but we still consider them a solid Fantasy start in most formats for this matchup.
News: The Lions DST scored twice Sunday against Denver. Dewayne White recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and Shaun Rogers returned an interception for a score. They also had 5.5 sacks and recovered four fumbles. Troy Walters had one kickoff return for 9 yards and Aveion Cason had one kickoff return for 33 yards.
Analysis: Consider the Lions DST a solid option for Week 10 at Arizona. Hopefully they can keep up this stellar play.
News: Detroit hosts the Denver Broncos and their seventh-ranked offense on Sunday in Week 9. Denver has the 13th-best passing unit and 11th-best rushing game. They have allowed just 11 sacks though, with only eight interceptions.
Analysis: The Lions DST is ranked 28th in the NFL (30th against the pass and 18th against the run). But the Lions are leading the league with 13 interceptions. We're still recommending you sit them in most Fantasy formats this week though.
News: The Lions allowed just 255 yards of total offense and seven points in Week 8 at Chicago. They forced QB Brian Griese to throw four interceptions and sacked him twice.
Analysis: The Lions came up with an interception, seemingly every time that hey needed to against Griese and they put together one of their better performances of the season. They are a middle-of-the-road Fantasy unit, but can be considered as a good bye-week replacement in Week 9 vs. Denver.
News: The Lions DST travels to play Chicago in Soldier Field on Sunday in Week 8. The Bears rank 26th in total offense. Only the Rams have thrown more interceptions than the Bears' 12, and their quarterbacks have been sacked 19 times.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 30th in the league in total defense, including 30th against the pass and last in the league against the run. Only consider the Lions DST if your starting unit is on a bye, and there are no better options.
News: The Lions DST had three sacks and recovered two fumbles Sunday against Tampa Bay. Troy Walters had two kickoff returns for 45 yards, and Casey Fitzsimmons had one kickoff return for no yards.
Analysis: Consider the Lions DST a low-end option for Week 8 against Chicago. They should only be used if needed.
News: Detroit hosts Tampa Bay in a former Norris Division matchup Sunday in Week 7. The Buccaneers rank 25th offensively, including 22nd through the air and 19th on the ground. The Buccaneers offensive line has allowed only seven sacks, mostly because of a maturing unit and QB Jeff Garcia's ability to scramble. And Garcia has thrown only one interception this far.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 29th in total defense, including 30th against the pass and 17th agaisnt the run. Head coach Rod Marinelli was once the defensive line coach for the Bucs, and his current defense has 14 sacks and nine interceptions. While the Bucs aren't a great offense, we're not suggesting you start this DST unit this week.
News: The Colts, Lions and 49ers are all on a bye in Week 6.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 29th in the NFL in total defense, including 29th against the passing game and 19th against the run. They will host the injury-ravaged Buccaneers offense in Week 7. You can do better from a Fantasy perspective than this unit though. They do get a lot of interceptions though (second in the NFL with nine).
News: The Lions DST had no sacks or interceptions Sunday against Washington. Troy Walters had four punt returns for 88.8 yards.
Analysis: The Lions DST has minimal Fantasy value and should not be used in Week 7 against Tampa Bay. Detroit has a bye in Week 6.
News: Washington will host the Lions DST in Week 5. The Redskins have the 15th-ranked offense and they are 21st in passing and 10th in the rushing game.
Analysis: The Lions have a high-powered passing offense, so the scores tend to get high and opponents throw against them a lot. Detroit's defense is ranked 29th overall (30th against the pass and 17th against the run) and while they get a lot of sacks (14, which ranks them third in the NFL), they give up too much yardage and points to recommend as a Fantasy unit.
News: The Lions DST was huge in Week 4 vs. Chicago, totaling six sacks, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, a defensive touchdown on an interception return and a special-teams touchdown off an onside kick.
Analysis: The Lions defense isn't this good -- just ask the Eagles, who scored 56 points on them. However, based on their strong play here and the matchup next week, consider the Lions DST a bye-week replacement when they play at Washington in Week 5.
News: The Lions DST will host the Chicago Bears in Week 4. The Bears currently rank 28th in the NFL in scoring, with just 11 points on average through three games.
Analysis: The Lions DST ranks 30th in the NFL in total defense, 31st in passing defense and 23rd in rushing defense. They gave up 56 points and 554 yards to the Philadelphia in Week 3, but the Bears are not the offensive force that the Eagles are, and they'll be playing with a new QB behind center in Brian Griese. In two games last year, the Bears scored a total of 60 points though, which is enough for us to recommend you find a different DST unit this week.
News: The Detroit Lions DST gave up 56 points and 554 yards to the Philadelphia Eagles in a 56-21 loss in Week 3. They did not make an interception, but did recover two fumbles and made three sacks.
Analysis: The Lions might have had an ugly day on Sunday, but they host the Bears in Week 4 and could be a half-decent bye-week replacement, as the Bears aren't exactly a threat to go for 554 yards like the Eagles did.
News: The Lions made the most of their game against a weak Vikings offense, forcing five turnovers -- four interceptions and one fumble -- while limiting Minnesota to 313 yards and 17 points. The Lions defense also had two sacks.
Analysis: The Lions DST generally won't perform this well, as it had the benefit of facing an raw QB in Tarvaris Jackson, who tied a Vikings record by throwing four interceptions. Keep it on the waiver wire for Week 3 on the road against a strong Philadelphia offense.
News: The Raiders offense managed 21 points and 375 total yards against the Lions in a Week 1 loss. The Lions defense allowed 92 yards rushing and 283 yards passing. They sacked QB Josh McCown three times and picked off two passes.
Analysis: The Lions defense stepped up in crunch time late in the fourth quarter after falling behind 21-20. They forced two crucial turnovers and held on for the win. They still have some areas they need to work on and should only be considered a No. 2 Fantasy DST heading into Week 2 against the Vikings.
News: Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Monday that safety Daniel Bullocks would miss the 2007 season with a torn ACL. "He just planted, nobody even hit him. He just set and it just caught," Marinelli said. "We love him. He's a heck of a player, so it is -- but you move on. It's what the league is. The NFL is all about that. There are disappointments; there are tragedies in this league. But the good strong people in this league move forward."
Analysis: Bullocks was the Lions' best player in their secondary, which was already considered pretty poor. The Lions DST is still not a recommended option in 2007 action.
News: The Detroit Lions took Shaun Rogers off the physically unable-to-perform list Monday, making one of their best players eligible to practice for the first time this year. Rogers was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2005, when the defensive tackle recorded a career-high 5 1/2 sacks. But he enters the season with questions about his play and weight. The Lions might have their first-string defensive line together for the first time Tuesday morning because Rogers and Redding possibly will be joined by banged-up defensive ends Kalimba Edwards (ankle) and Dewayne White (groin). "We just had to be smart and wait for those guys to be healthy," Redding said. "We need those three guys. They're crucial to this defense. Everybody knows that."
Analysis: Rogers gives the Lions a nice push against the run, so it helps that he's back. The Lions have undergone a major facelift defensively, trading away CB Dre Bly and DE James Hall and releasing DTs Marcus Bell and Tyoka Jackson. They have signed DE Dewayne White, re-signed DT Cory Redding and have their linebackers in order. It's the secondary that is a weak spot. The Lions DST is still not a recommended option in 2007 action.
News: Browns QBs Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye are angling to start for the team, but each of them tossed an interception vs. Detroit in the second preseason game. The Lions defense held the Browns scoreless until the fourth quarter when Brady Quinn came in against the third- and fourth-stringers. The Lions added two sacks and a fumble recovery in the game.
Analysis: The Lions have undergone a major facelift defensively, trading away CB Dre Bly and DE James Hall and releasing DTs Marcus Bell and Tyoka Jackson. They have signed DE Dewayne White, re-signed DT Cory Redding and have their linebackers in order. It's the secondary that is a weak spot. The Lions DST is still not a recommended option in 2007 action.
News: Shaun Rogers (knee, weight) remained in the physically unable to perform list (PUP) and he did not play in Thursday's preseason game against the Bengals. Rogers can come off the PUP list at any time during training camp, but if he's still on the list on Sept. 1, he will miss at least the first six games of the 2007 season.
Analysis: When healthy, Rogers can be a provider of sacks and a few tackles but is mainly a space-eater along the defensive line. The Lions DST is still not a recommended option in 2007 action.
News: NFL Network reports that the Lions have signed CB Travis Fisher to a one-year deal. Fisher broke his forearm last year but ended the year with 28 solo tackles and a pass defensed.
Analysis: Fisher is used to playing in a Tampa-2 scheme and should help out the Lions' secondary. The team has undergone a major facelift defensively, trading away CB Dre Bly and DE James Hall and releasing DTs Marcus Bell and Tyoka Jackson while franchising DL Cory Redding. They have signed DE Dewayne White and have their linebackers in order, so Fisher will hopefully help a secondary that is definitely a weak spot. The Lions DST is still not a recommended option in 2007 action.
News: The Lions agreed to terms on a five-year contract with free agent defensive end Dewayne White, filling one of their offseason needs. He played for Detroit coach Rod Marinelli when he was the defensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 6-foot-2, 273-pound White made 14 sacks the last three seasons, playing in 16 games each year for the Buccaneers, and has 114 career tackles over four seasons.
Analysis: The Lions have had an exodus defensively, trading away CB Dre Bly and DE James Hall and releasing DTs Marcus Bell and Tyoka Jackson while franchising DL Cory Redding. White helps rebuild the Lions' defensive line and gives them a pass rushing presence. However, don't expect them to be a useful unit in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: CBS SportsLine has confirmed that the Lions and Broncos will complete a trade that will send CB Dre Bly to Denver in exchange for RB Tatum Bell, OT George Foster and what is believed to be a fifth-round pick in the 2007 Draft. Bly will take Darrent Williams' old spot in the Broncos secondary. The team did re-sign LB Alex Lewis to a three-year deal, and have also traded DE James Hall to the Rams for a fifth-round pick.
Analysis: The Lions offense gets help, but their defense takes a step back. Remember, the Lions will benefit from keeping franchised free agent DE Cory Redding on staff. But with a secondary in shambles, don't expect them to be a useful unit in 2007 Fantasy play.
News: The Lions have tagged DT Cory Redding with the franchise tag. What that means is that the club has tendered him a one-year offer with the average salary of the top-five highest-paid players at his position. Moreover, if a team wishes to make Redding an offer, the Lions have the right to match the offer. If they choose not to match the offer, they will get two first-round picks from the team who signs him.
Analysis: The Lions will benefit from keeping Redding on staff. But with a secondary mostly in shambles, don't expect them to be a useful unit in 2007 Fantasy play unless they add a couple of defensive playmakers along with a better return man, in which case they would be a sleeper.
News: The Detroit News reports that Lions CB Dre Bly has asked for a trade out of town. Bly is entering the final year of a five-year contract he signed as a free agent from St. Louis. Bly ended 2006 with 54 total tackles (46 solo), 15 passes defensed and three interceptions.
Analysis: The Lions were weak in 2006, but expect some improvement. They are strong up the middle and will evolve into a quality unit with or without Bly capable of running the 'Tampa-2' system coach Rod Marinelli had a hand in putting together a long time ago. If the Lions add a couple of defensive playmakers along with a better return man, they could be a sleeper for 2007 Fantasy play.
News: Not many Fantasy owners considered using the Lions defense/special teams in 2006, and it's easy to see why. They finished the season 28th in total defense with 12 interceptions, 18 forced fumbles (third best in the league) and 30 sacks. Moreover, they scored only one defensive touchdown all season and zero special teams scores.
Analysis: Expect this defense to get better in a jiffy. They are strong up the middle and will evolve into a quality unit capable of running the 'Tampa-2' system coach Rod Marinelli had a hand in putting together a long time ago. If the Lions add a couple of defensive playmakers along with a better return man, they could be a sleeper for 2007 Fantasy play.
News: The Detroit Lions hired coach Joe Barry, Rod Marinelli's son-in-law, as the new defensive coordinator on Wednesday. The Lions said Barry would be introduced at a news conference Wednesday morning at the team's practice facility. Barry, the linebackers coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, takes over for Donnie Henderson, who was fired Tuesday, two days after the team finished a dismal 3-13 season. The team originally wanted Barry last season but the Bucs wouldn't let him out of his contract.
Analysis: Barry and Marinelli have known each other for a long time obviously and should have the same ideals when it comes to defensive gameplanning. The Lions need help in their secondary more than anything and should be active in improving their defense this offseason. For now, they are still not worth of being considered for Fantasy use.
News: The Lions defense had three sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles at Dallas in Week 17.
Analysis: The Lions defense should not be considered for regular use in 2007 league play.
News: The Lions defense gave up 354 yards and 26 points to the Bears in Week 16. They did not force any turnovers and had only two sacks (Corey Smith and Tyoka Jackson).
Analysis: The Lions are not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 17 at Dallas.
News: The Lions allowed 17 points and 303 yards of offense in Week 15 at Green Bay. They did, however, pick off three Brett Favre passes in the game and forced two fumbles in the game. They also picked up one sack in the game.
Analysis: All in all, the Lions DST had a solid game for Fantasy owners, but did anyone use them? They aren't exactly a recommended Fantasy option for Week 16 vs. Detroit.
News: The Lions defense totaled one interception-return for a touchdown along with a sack and a forced fumble while allowing 30 points vs. Minnesota in Week 14.
Analysis: The Lions defense is too weak to use in Fantasy play. Don't lean on them when they play at Green Bay in Week 15.
News: The Lions will play their final four games without Shaun Rogers. The defensive tackle was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season. He played just six games this year. Rogers was suspended for four games by the NFL in October for taking a banned substance to help control his weight. He had knee surgery and finished the season with 36 tackles and two sacks. Rogers was selected to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. He had a career-high 5 1/2 sacks last year despite taking on more than one blocker on almost every play. "I think Shaun Rogers is the best defensive linemen in the game, not just the best defensive tackle," Lions president Matt Millen has said. "Some might be stronger, quicker or bigger, but nobody has his combination of all those things in addition to being as smart as he is.
Analysis: Rogers' absence should have no impact in Fantasy leagues as the Lions defense has been poor without him and should continue to be that way with him on the IR.
News: The Lions allowed 363 yards and 28 points for the Patriots in Week 13 at New England. They were able to force three turnovers and sacked QB Tom Brady twice.
Analysis: The turnovers and sacks weren't enough to overcome the yardage and points they surrendered. We can't think of any reason you'd want to start the Lions defense in Week 14 vs. Minnesota.
News: The Lions have officially put DT Shaun Rogers on the active roster following his four-game suspension plus another week off to recover from surgery he had during the suspension. "Shaun is still day-to-day; we'll see how he recovers over this weekend, still in the training room right now working on rehab," coach Rod Marinelli said. However, DT Shaun Cody (toe) was placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the rest of the season.
Analysis: The Lions defense is unreliable and shouldn't be used at New England in Week 13.
News: The Detroit DST gave up 27 points against Miami with one sack, one fumble recovery and one interception. DB Daniel Bullocks had 11 tackles. LB Ernie Sims had 11 tackles and a half-sack. DB Fernando Bryant had five tackles and a fumble recovery. DB Terrence Holt had seven tackles and an interception. DL Cory Redding had two tackles and a half-sack. DB Dre Bly had one tackle.
Analysis: The Detroit DST is not a recommended option for Week 13 against New England. Use all IDP players as needed, but they also should not be considered good options against the Patriots.
News: The Lions defense allowed 17 points and 338 total yards in Week 11 to the Cardinals. They did not have any sacks and had no turnovers as well.
Analysis: Outside of giving up less than 20 points, the Lions defense had a pretty poor day against the Cardinals. The Lions DST should be avoided in Week 12, when the Lions play the Dolphins.
News: The Lions defense totaled three sacks and a forced fumble vs. San Francisco in Week 10. They did hold San Fran to 19 points.
Analysis: The Lions defense should not be used at Arizona in Week 11.
News: The Lions had two interceptions and a fumble against Atlanta and QB Michael Vick. LB Ernie Sims recovered a fumble and had six tackles. DB Dre Bly had one tackle and an interception. DB Kenoy Kennedy had four tackles and an interception. LB Boss Bailey had six tackles.
Analysis: The Lions face San Francisco in Week 10 and could be considered a good sleeper DST. Use all regular IDP players as needed.
News: The Falcons will face a Detroit defense which could be getting some reinforcements back in Week 9. The Lions might have as many as three starting defenders -- safety Kenoy Kennedy and linebackers Alex Lewis and Teddy Lehman -- returning from injuries following the team's bye week. The Lions, however, could be missing both starting defensive tackles. Shaun Rogers is still serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's rule on banned substances, and Shaun Cody could miss a second straight game due to a dislocated toe. Without Rogers and Cody, Detroit allowed a season-high 221 rushing yards in a 31-24 road loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 22. "It's disappointing, in terms of our defense," coach Rod Marinelli said. "In this league, if you can't stop the run, you're not going to win."
Analysis: Considering how hot Vick has been as of late, don't use the Lions defense in Week 9 Fantasy play.
News: Detroit's offense struggled in a season-opening 9-6 loss to the Seahawks, but most of the defeats since then have been the fault of the defense. The Lions allowed almost 1,000 yards passing in consecutive losses to Chicago, Green Bay and St. Louis, failing to get a single sack or interception, then gave up 221 yards rushing in last weekend's defeat by the New York Jets. That comes as a surprise to coach Rod Marinelli, who specializes in that side of the ball, unlike previous Lions coaches Steve Mariucci and Marty Mornhinweg. "I believed we would be better than we have been," he said. "We started off fast, but we've been inconsistent - up and down. Our lack of consistency is a definite concern."
Analysis: Detroit's defense is not worth using in Fantasy play. Keep them off rosters. The Lions are on bye in Week 8.
News: The Jets totaled 398 yards and 31 points against the Lions defense in Week 7. The Jets got 221 yards on the ground. The Lions did have one interception, sacked QB Chad Pennington twice and forced two fumbles, which none were recovered. Rookie LB Ernie Sims led all tacklers with 10. DB Terrance Holt also had tackles and one interception.
Analysis: The Lions defense is so inconsistent, it is hard to tell which team is going to show up on a weekly basis. Now they are without Shaun Rogers for a few weeks, it probably won't be pretty. The Lions are on a bye in Week 8, so reserve the Lions DST. Sims continues to be a No. 1 LB in IDP leagues. Use Holt as a No. 3 Fantasy DB.
News: Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers has been suspended for four games by the NFL for taking a banned, over-the-counter substance. He will not be able to return until Week 12 against the Dolphins.
Analysis: The Lions' run defense was pretty poor to begin with, so don't expect them to be any better without Rogers.
News: Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers will be suspended for four games by the NFL for taking a banned, over-the-counter substance, an official within the league told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the NFL is expected to announce the suspension Wednesday. "We have no comment," Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said.
Analysis: Rogers should be reserved or dropped in all Fantasy leagues which use individual defensive players, as he is basically a bye-week replacement to begin with. As far as the Lions DST and its Fantasy value is concerned, you should not have been using them before or after this suspension. They're pretty terrible.
News: The Lions defense put on a great show in Week 6 against the Bills limiting them to 17 points and 242 total yards of offense. They sacked QB J.P. Losman five times, forced two fumbles in which they recovered and had an interception. DL James Hall led the way with seven tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. DL Shaun Rogers had three tackles and one sack. LB Boss Bailey had six tackles and DB Fernando Bryant had eight tackles.
Analysis: After a strong start to the season, the Lions defense dropped off for a few weeks but seemed to have regained their form the past two weeks. While they struggle to find consistency, the Lions DST should be viewed as a bye-week replacement Fantasy option. The Lions play the Jets in Week 7. Bailey is a good LB in IDP leagues. Hall is having a great season with 5.5 sacks, and while he is on a hot streak, you should use him in IDP leagues. Rogers and Bryant are good bye-week replacements in IDP leagues.
News: The Lions gave up 26 points against Minnesota but only one offensive touchdown. LB Boss Bailey had 11 tackles, and DB Jamar Fletcher had an interception. LB Ernie Sims had seven tackles.
Analysis: The Lions DST has a decent matchup against Buffalo in Week 6 so could be a useful option if your starting DST is on a bye. Bailey is a good LB in IDP leagues, as is Sims. Keep Fletcher reserved.
News: The Lions defense has regressed from their ferocious selves at the start of the season, recording one sack and allowing 41 points and over 400 total yards at St. Louis in Week 4.
Analysis: The Lions defense is no longer worth using in Fantasy play. Drop them for a better option on the waiver wire.
News: The Green Bay Packers racked up 400 yards and 31 points on the Detroit Lions defense in Week 3. The Lions were unable to sack QB Brett Favre or force the interception-prone QB to cough one up, but they did manage to make the Packers lose two fumbles. LB Ernie Sims led the defense with 10 total tackles. DB Daniel Bullocks was second with six tackles and DB Jamar Fletcher had five tackles.
Analysis: After a strong performance in Week 1 against the the Seahawks, the Lions defense has been non-existent the last two weeks. For Week 4 against St. Louis they remain a No. 2 DST. As for IDP players, if you haven't already scooped up Sims, do so now. He is for real and looks like will be the team's leading tackler at the end of the season. He is already making a strong case for Defensive Rookie-of-the-Year.
News: The Lions will have to do some juggling with their linebacking corps in the game Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The loss of SLB Alex Lewis for at least one game with a sprained left knee set off a chain reaction that could affect several teammates. With Lewis out, Paris Lenon will move from the starting MLB to Lewis' strong-side position and Boss Bailey, who was being brought back slowly from an off-season ankle surgery, will get his first start of the season at MLB. Rookie Ernie Sims will remain at the weak-side linebacker position but backups LaVar Woods and rookie Anthony Cannon are expected to get additional playing time.
Analysis: The loss of Lewis isn't severe, but it will have somewhat of an effect on the Lions. Still, the good news is that they are going against the Packers, who could be without starting running back Ahman Green. Consider using the Lions defense in Week 3 if your regular DST is on bye. As far as IDP concerns, the only player worthy of ownership at this point is Sims, who is having a nice start to his rookie season with 17 tackles. Play him, if you got him.

Lions defense gets destroyed
News: A week after thrashing the Seahawks and holding them out of the end zone, the Lions defense saw the Bears score 34 points in Week 2, allowing QB Rex Grossman to throw four TDs with 289 passing yards. Grossman was not sacked nor intercepted, though the Lions defense did force one fumble.
Analysis: So that's the bad news. The very good news is that the Lions will host the Packers in Week 3 and will be motivated to put a hurting on Brett Favre. Consider the Lions defense if your regular DST is on bye.

Lions DST roars in Week 1
News: The Lions defense played above expectations against the potent Seattle offense in Week 1, holding them to nine points, recording five sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Analysis: Suddenly, the Lions defense looks mighty appealing. They play the Bears in Chicago in Week 2 and might be considered a sleeper unit. Use them here only if your primary DST has a horrible matchup.

Lions DST in trouble this week
News: The Lions defense has undergone a transformation where they will take on the look of a Tampa-2 scheme. That could mean lots of sacks and takeaways, although it will take some time for that to happen in Motown. Head coach Rod Marinelli, a former D-line coach for the Bucs, will pay special attention to the defense for certain.
Analysis: The Lions will host Shaun Alexander and the Seahawks in Week 1, definitely not a quality matchup for the DST. Sit them for Week 1 and most weeks where they don't have a clear favorable matchup.

Sims makes impression with DET
News: Ernie Sims, the ninth overall pick in this year's NFL draft, signed with the Lions, agreeing to terms Saturday night and reporting to the Lions on Sunday after getting a call late Saturday from his agent, Todd France, telling him the deal was done. "I was lying down and trying to get some rest, just in case I would be practicing," the linebacker from Florida State said. "I had mixed feelings -- I really wanted to be out here, but I didn't want to be under this sun." The 6-foot, 221-pound Sims, who missed the first two days of training camp, finished his collegiate career with 200 tackles, seven sacks for 61 yards and 21 tackles for loss.
Analysis: He made an immediate impact Sunday, cracking fellow rookie Brian Calhoun with a forearm to the head on his first play. "That felt good," Sims said. "I couldn't unload on him like I wanted, but it was nice to get a lick in." Sims is a strong, fast player who should be a starter right away for the Lions on the weakside in the mold of Derrick Brooks. He will help the Lions be a strong sleeper DST to consider ... in 2007.

Lions cut Wilkinson, re-sign Davis
News: The Detroit Lions released defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson, and re-signed linebacker James Davis to a one-year contract. Wilkinson, the No. 1 pick overall in the 1994 draft, spent the last three seasons in Detroit after five with the Washington Redskins. He spent his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Analysis: The 6-foot-4, 353-pound Wilkinson has 455 career tackles and 54 sacks in 185 career games, including 48 straight starts with the Lions. Davis played in all 16 of Detroit's games last season, and finished third on the team with 79 tackles and recovered a fumble. The Lions drafted him in the fifth round in 2003. Neither move will make an impact on the value of the Lions DST.

Detroit drafts LB Ernie Sims
News: The Detroit Lions selected Florida State LB Ernie Sims with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. Sims' stock had soared in the weeks before the draft. He was the first defender the Lions have selected in the first round since LB Chris Claiborne.
Analysis: Sims will no doubt improve the value of the Lions defense, which has some real athletes and is worth a late-round flier in seasonal formats.

News: The Lions DST recorded 19 interceptions, 31 sacks, 12 fumble recoveries, three TDs and allowed 345 points (21.5 PPG) this season.

News: Detroit's defense allowed only four field goals at New Orleans in Week 16 Saturday. They gave up 12 points, 47 rushing yards and 226 passing yards.

Lions D healthier
News: The Lions should get a break with the return of cornerback Dre' Bly and perhaps safety Terrence Holt and even strong side linebacker Boss Bailey. Defensive coordinator Dick Jauron will have significantly more to work with. It appears unlikely MLB Earl Holmes (knee) will be back and it's uncertain what kind of strategy Jauron will use to try to contain Atlanta QB Michael Vick. In previous games against Vick, the Lions have had varied levels of success using a linebacker to shadow him and playing him straight up. Although Bly will be playing with his right hand in a cast, his presence gives the Lions both a physical and emotional lift.
Analysis: The Lions DST won't do enough to help your Fantasy team vs. Atlanta in Week 12.

Dre' Bly cleared to play
News: According to the Detroit Free Press, cornerback Dre' Bly (wrist) has been cleared to play on Thanksgiving Day against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12. Safety Terrence Holt (back) said he would return from a one-game absence. Head coach Steve Mariucci said linebacker Boss Bailey (knee) might return, too. But Mariucci said linebacker Earl Holmes (knee) was "a little bit more of a longshot" and linebacker Teddy Lehman (foot) was out for the season. He needs surgery, and the club put him on injured reserve.
Analysis: Bly will return from a four-game absence, but his wrist is still being held together by metal pins. Bly will be playing with one hand tied behing his back for all intensive purposes, so don't expect too much from him in IDP leagues until he can prove it does not hinder his play.

Lions sign LB Nate Wayne
News: Detroit signed veteran LB Nate Wayne Wednesday, the former Green Bay Packer who more recently played with Philadelphia and was released in early September by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Analysis: With LB Earl Holmes (sprained wrist) and LB Teddy Lehman (sprained foot) hurt, Wayne could see the field soon, but he has limited Fantasy value in IDP leagues.

Lions DST deals with injuries
News: The Detroit News reports that DE Jared DeVries (shoulder), LB Earl Holmes (wrist) and LB Teddy Lehman (sprained foot) were the most serious injuries from Sunday's game against Chicago. Also, DT Shaun Rogers (sprained right knee) is expected to return to practice this week. S Terrence Holt also left the game with a concussion.
Analysis: The Lions DST has been inconsistent this season. They face a reeling offense at Minnesota in Week 9, so they could do well for Brad Johnson's first start back in the Twin Cities. Only consider this unit if your starting unit is on a bye. Holmes is the only player of this group that deserves starting consideration in most IDP leagues.

News: DE James Hall (groin) and LB Alex Lewis (ankle) are listed as doubtful for Week 6 against Carolina. Neither player was able to practice Wednesday. S Vernon Fox is listed as questionable. Also return man Eddie Drummond (knee) is listed as questionable.
Analysis: The Lions DST is a middle-of-the-road Fantasy unit that should be used against favorable matchups only. Lewis and Hall aren't worth owning at this point in IDP leagues.

Lions stick it to Ravens
News: The Detroit defense picked off Ravens QB Anthony Wright twice, sacked him once and recovered two fumbles while holding Baltimore to 17 points in Week 5.

Lions a solid start vs. Ravens
News: Any good the Lions might have done in pass defense -- they were reasonably successful in pressuring QB Brian Griese and intercepted him three times -- was offset by the 80-yard touchdown play by WR Joey Galloway and the 41-yard TD play by RB Michael Pittman. DE Kalimba Edwards got two of the three sacks against Griese; LB Teddy Lehman, CB R.W. McQuarters and FS Terrence Holt had interceptions. Whether it was their defense or rookie Carnell "Cadillac" Williams' tender hamstring, the Lions were successful in taking the hot-starting young RB out of the game. In 11 carries, he gained only 13 yards. RB Michael Pittman was more successful against the Detroit defense, with five rushes for 30 yards.
Analysis: With the offensively inept Ravens in town for Week 5, the Lions should be an outstanding option among unheralded Fantasy DST units. They are a decent stopgap option for a Fantasy owner who has the Cowboys defense facing the potent Eagles.

News: CB Ty Law worked out for the Lions on Monday and made a nice impression, according to published reports. General manager Matt Millen was surprised at how good the veteran looked.

Analysis: The early estimates are that Bailey will not be able to return to the lineup until at least November. He might be forced to miss the entire season. The club will depend on Donte Curry to step in at strong-side linebacker. Lions land DT Dan Wilkinson
News: The Lions signed the veteran Wilkinson to a four-year contract on Sunday. The team was desperate to add a veteran on the defensive line as Luther Elliss has missed training camp due to a torn pectoral muscle.

His signing increases the Fantasy value of the Detroit defensive unit, but they are still only worth using when the matchup is favorable or when your primary defense has a bye week.
News: According to the Detroit Free Press, Bailey (ankle) returned to practice Sunday.
Analysis: Bailey has a chance to be a useful player in leagues that require individual defensive players, but he is better left undrafted until he proves himself worthy of a roster spot. His presence does help improve the value of the Lions defense, but it is still not worth selecting on Draft Day.
