News: 49ers DB Tarell Brown left Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Giants and did not return. He was struck by Dashon Goldson on a third down play late in the third quarter as they collided going for an interception. Brown required the help of trainers to leave the field of play and was taken to the locker room for observation. Rookie DB Chris Culliver took his place and DB Tramaine Brock is the third corner.
Analysis: Brown posted five tackles and a pass defended before leaving on Sunday. He posted 40 tackles during the regular season with a career-high four interceptions, which gave him some low-end value in Fantasy. Still, he is not productive enough to be a consistent contributor so plan on ignoring him in IDP formats in 2012.
News: 49ers DB Tarell Brown recorded two interceptions in a Week 17 win over St. Louis. He finished the season with four interceptions. Brown also recorded one tackle in the game.
Analysis: After being quiet in Fantasy for most of the season, Brown amassed four interceptions over the final four weeks. Despite the strong finish, the lack of a consistent track record makes Brown a less-than-appealing option for owners in IDP leagues going into next season.
News: Niners DB Tarell Brown added a late 62-yard interception return for a touchdown in San Francisco's second-highest scoring output of the season. Brown intercepted Arizona Richard Bartel in Week 17 and capped off the 38-7 victory. Brown finished with three tackles in the contest.
Analysis: Brown finished the year with 38 tackles and one interception. Just because his lone pick was returned for a touchdown, doesn't mean he's worth drafting in 2011. Ignore him in all Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: 49ers DB Michael Lewis (11 tackles), DB Dashon Goldson (nine tackles), DB Tarell Brown (nine tackles), DB Shawntae Spencer (eight tackles), LB Patrick Willis (eight tackles), LB Manny Lawson (five tackles, sack) and LB Parys Haralson (four tackles, sack) all produced nice stats in a Week 11 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Willis is an elite Fantasy LB in IDP formats and should be started in all leagues for Week 12 vs. Jacksonville. Goldson has plenty of value in deeper IDP formats, while Lewis has some minimal value. The others can all continue to be ignored.
News: The following 49ers defenders were helpful contributors in Week 10 vs. Chicago: DB Mark Roman (six solo tackles, interception); DB Dashon Goldson (five solo tackles, interception); LB Patrick Willis (11 total tackles); DT Aubrayo Franklin (three total tackles, interception); DB Michael Lewis (four total tackles, interception); and CB Tarell Brown (solo tackle, interception).
Analysis: The Niners picked off Jay Cutler five times, which helped pad the stats of several defenders. But frankly, only Willis and Lewis are worth a look in Fantasy play. The 49ers play at the Packers in Week 11.
News: The 49ers did not practice Monday, but DB Tarell Brown was listed on the injury report as full participation heading into Thursday's game against Chicago with an injury to his ribs.
Analysis: Brown has minimal Fantasy value when healthy. Ignore him in all leagues for Week 10 against the Bears.
News: San Francisco cornerback Tarell Brown has received a three-year contract extension that takes him through the 2013 season. Brown, a fifth-round draft pick in 2007 out of Texas, is a backup in the 49ers' secondary who competed for a starting job during training camp before injuring his toe and missing time. Brown received increased playing time last season at nickel back and also contributed 16 tackles on special teams.
Analysis: Brown doesn't post enough stats to warrant Fantasy use. Keep him off of rosters.
News: Niners DB Tarell Brown left Week 5 against the Falcons with a strained right groin. He didn't record a stat in the game.
Analysis: Brown never does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave him on waivers.
News: CB Tarell Brown returned to practice Wednesday after missing most of training camp with a toe injury. Brown is locked in a battle for the right cornerback spot with Dre Bly.
Analysis: If Brown gets the starting nod in the battle, which is not expected, he'd still only be a very low-end Fantasy DB for IDP leagues.
News: 49ers CB Tarell Brown, who injured his toe in the first practice of training camp, returned for limited duty on Monday. Brown is locked in a battle for the right cornerback spot with Dre Bly.
Analysis: If Brown gets the starting nod in the battle, which is not expected, he'd still only be a very low-end Fantasy DB for IDP leagues.
News: 49ers players who will be sidelined with injury during Friday's preseason game against the Broncos are running back Michael Robinson (groin), cornerback Tarell Brown (toe), linebacker Patrick Willis (ankle) and tight end Delanie Walker (concussion).
Analysis: The most important player for Fantasy purposes is Willis, who is a must-own Fantasy LB in IDP leagues. It seems like a minor injury, so Fantasy owners shouldn't be scared off. The remaining three players are primarily backups and will have minimal Fantasy impact this season.
News: San Francisco cornerback Walt Harris could miss the upcoming season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during a May minicamp, dealing an early blow to the 49ers' hopes of a return to playoff contention. The 34-year-old Harris will need surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, which is at least partially torn. Such operations typically require several months of rehabilitation. Tarell Brown probably will take Harris' place atop the 49ers' depth chart opposite fellow cornerback Nate Clements. Shawntae Spencer, a longtime starter at cornerback for San Francisco, still hasn't returned to practice after missing 14 games last season with a knee ligament injury.
Analysis: Harris was a starter in the Niners secondary and will be missed if he is indeed out. Brown and Spencer are nothing more than potential one-week replacements in the deepest of IDP leagues this summer. Keep all three 49ers DBs out of draft plans.
News:The Sports Xchange notes that CB Tarell Brown, a second-year player from Texas, got the most significant playing time of his career in Week 3 against Detroit as he stepped in after injuries to Shawntae Spencer and Donald Strickland, both of whom were inactive against the Lions.
Analysis: Brown covered Lions receiver Mike Furrey most of the game, holding him to two catches for eight yards. Brown also recorded his first NFL interception. He could be a player to keep an eye on in larger IDP formats, but can't be trusted yet with his job not guaranteed.
News: San Francisco listed the following players as Week 1 inactives against Arizona: DB Marcus Hudson, DB Tarell Brown, DB Reggie Smith, LB Ahmad Brooks and LB Tully Banta-Cain.
Analysis: None of the aforementioned players have any Fantasy relevance at this time.
News: The 49ers said Wednesday that rookie cornerback Tarell Brown injured two ligaments in his right knee in the season finale at Cleveland, but might not require surgery.
Analysis: Brown isn't productive enough to warrant use in Fantasy play. His injury shouldn't impact anyone for league play next year.
News: 49ers rookie CB Tarell Brown suffered a right knee injury and left the stadium on crutches.
Analysis: Brown wasn't productive enough to warrant use in Fantasy play. His injury shouldn't impact anyone.
News: 49ers WR LeRon McCoy, DB Tarell Brown, DB Dashon Goldson, DL Atiyyah Ellison, DL Aubrayo Franklin and WR Jason Hill are all inactive for Week 12 at Arizona.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves for the 49ers and have little to no Fantasy impact when active. Keep them reserved in Fantasy leagues for Week 12.
News: The 49ers' list of inactives for Week 10 at Seattle includes QB Shaun Hill, WR LeRon McCoy, DB Tarell Brown, DB Keith Lewis, DL Atiyyah Ellison, TE Patrick Estes, WR Jason Hill and DL Ray McDonald.
Analysis: None of these players makes the kind of statistical impact you'd want in Fantasy. Keep all reserved. The 49ers host the Rams in Week 11.
News: The inactives for Week 8's game between the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers are as follows. For the Saints, WR Robert Meachem, DB Jay Bellamy, DB Fred Thomas, LB Marvin Mitchell, TE Ronnie Ghent and DE Renaldo Wynn (all coach's decision) are inactive. For the 49ers, QB Shaun Hill (coach's decision), WR LeRon McCoy (coach's decision), DB Tarell Brown (coach's decision), DB Keith Lewis (hamstring), DE Atiyyah Ellison (coach's decision) and Darrell Jackson (quad) are inactive.
Analysis: The only player in this group with any Fantasy value is Jackson, and he was doubtful for this game, so hopefully you have a capable replacement on your bench already.
News: The 49ers listed QB Alex Smith (shoulder, emergency QB), WR LeRon McCoy (coach's decision), DB Tarrell Brown (coach's decision), DB Keith Lewis (hamstring), WR Jason Hill (coach's decision) and DL Atiyyah Ellison (coach's decision) as inactive for Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants.
Analysis: Smith will ride the bench this week, but you have to think there's a great chance he'll be back on the field in Week 8, when the 49ers host the Saints. Smith, as well as the rest of the players on this inactive list, should be reserved in all Fantasy leagues until further notice.
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (knee), CB Tarell Brown (hamstring), WR Jason Hill (knee), S Doshon Goldson, DT Atiyyah Ellison, DE Ray McDonald and third QB Shaun Hill were all named inactive for San Francisco's Week 4 game with the Seahawks.
Analysis: Davis was ruled out earlier this week, so hopefully you have already benched him. The rest of these players have no Fantasy value at this point.
News:The Sports Xchange reports rookie DB Tarell Brown has done nothing to make the 49ers regret their decision to take a chance on him with a fifth-round draft pick. Other teams shied away from Brown, whose stock plummeted after he was arrested twice on marijuana charges that were later dropped in a nine-month span before the draft. This week, Brown was named the winner of the Thomas Herrion Award, which goes to the rookie or first-year player who has taken advantage of every opportunity, turned it into a positive and made his dream a reality. "I feel like your past is your past," Brown said. "If you're a man, you stand up for what happened to you and don't put blame on anyone else. You handle your business like a man."
Analysis: Brown had a nice career at Texas and might develop into a decent NFL cornerback. He is buried on the 49ers depth chart at this time, so shouldn't be used in IDP leagues. But keep an eye on his status as the season progresses.
News: The San Francisco 49ers signed defensive back Tarell Brown on Tuesday, inking their fifth-round pick to a four-year contract. Brown's senior season at Texas was tinged by controversy, hurting his draft stock despite a college career that included 35 starts and a national championship with the Longhorns. Brown was suspended for Texas' game against Ohio State last season after he was arrested on misdemeanor drug and weapons charges after a traffic stop. Brown, who had three interceptions at Texas, was the 147th overall pick in last month's draft. He is the third of San Francisco's nine draft picks to sign.
Analysis: Brown will probably be more of a situational DB and special teams player in 2007. He will have minimal Fantasy value as a rookie in IDP leagues.
News: Aside from first-round pick LB Patrick Willis, the 49ers' 2007 draft class includes: Cent. Michigan OT Joe Staley, Washington State WR Jason Hill, Florida DE Ray McDonald, Nebraska DE Jay Moore, Washington FS Dashon Goldson, Florida DT Joe Cohen, Texas CB Tarell Brown and Kansas State RB Thomas Clayton.
Analysis: Staley should step into the starting lineup and be a very good lineman for Frank Gore, Alex Smith and the Niners. Hill is a decent-sized, physical runner who lacks that big explosion speed but should still be an effective target. He's worth a late-round flier in the deepest of seasonal leagues and an early- to middle-round pick in dynasty rookie drafts. McDonald and Moore are nice 3-4 defensive linemen who don't project out to being statistical machines. The rest of the players will provide team depth this season.
