News: The Steelers waived/injured WR Limas Sweed on Wednesday. The former second-round pick never was able to play again after suffering an Achilles' injury last May.
Analysis: Sweed is unlikely to help Fantasy owners win this season. Keep him off rosters.
News: Pittsburgh wide receiver Limas Sweed is looking to finally deliver on his potential. The former second-round pick has been an enigma during his three seasons with the Steelers. He totaled just seven receptions in his first two years in the league, and missed the entire 2010 season after tearing the Achilles tendon in his left leg. The 26-year-old says he's finally healthy after spending the NFL lockout working out at the University of Texas. "I'm ready to show them I'm that guy," Sweed said. "I'm that big guy and fill in the way they want me to fill in."
Analysis: Sweed added he's eager to show people that he can be the big-play receiver the Steelers envisioned when they took him 53rd overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh could use a receiver with Sweed's 6-foot-4 frame, but playing making the team could be difficult with 11 receivers fighting for five or six roster spots. Don't target him in Fantasy leagues at this time.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that WR Limas Sweed can still be a part of the Steelers in 2011. The report says Sweed has had a rough road in the three seasons since the Steelers drafted him in the second round from Texas in 2008. He had his share of drops, including the famous one in the AFC title game as a rookie. In 2009, his season ended because of personal emotional issues he had to deal with. In 2010, his season ended before it began when on the final day of minicamp, his Achilles' tendon ruptured. According to the report, "its more than just dropping passes he must overcome, but hes still working."
Analysis: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also believes in Sweed. "His competition is getting stiff, because I think we have acquired some guys since we acquired him who have proven they are capable of playing NFL football," Tomlin said. "I'm sure it's not a comfortable situation, but it is a competition." Sweed, at best, could be a reserve WR for the Steelers, but he's not going to make much of an impact for Fantasy owners. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: In a Q&A on the official team website, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that WR Limas Sweed still has a place on the team. Sweed missed the 2010 season with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon. "His competition is getting stiff, because I think we have acquired some guys since we acquired him who have proven they are capable of playing NFL football," Tomlin said. "I'm sure it's not a comfortable situation, but it is a competition."
Analysis: Sweed has caught just seven passes in two seasons. It'll take a miracle for him to be relevant to Fantasy owners in 2011.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Steelers WR Limas Sweed is out for the season, and his days in Pittsburgh could be over. The Steelers placed Sweed on injured reserve Tuesday with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon, a day after the team released him and he cleared waivers. No team was willing to take a chance on Sweed, who has caught just seven passes in two seasons, after the Steelers placed him on waivers. He won't count against the Steelers' roster total teams are allowed to carry 80 players during the offseason.
Analysis: Sweed, who has been plagued by dropped passes during his brief career, had been a regular at offseason conditioning and practices before getting hurt. It's safe to ignore Sweed in all leagues this season. He has no Fantasy value while he's hurt, and it sounds like he might be looking for a new team soon.
News: The Steelers placed WR Limas Sweed on injured reserve following a minicamp injury. Sweed injured his Achilles' on the final day of the team's May camp. He was originally waived/injured but cleared waivers, reverting him to the IR. He will not play this season.
Analysis: Sweed won't help Fantasy owners this year, so don't draft him.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed underwent surgery for a torn Achilles' tendon on Monday and will miss an undetermined amount of time, potentially the rest of the season. Sweed either tore or ruptured the tendon during the last practice from the team's recent minicamp. He is expected to be placed on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp this summer; if he remains on the PUP list for the start of the season he'll miss at least six weeks.
Analysis: Sweed, a second-round draft pick from Texas in 2008, had seven catches in his first two NFL seasons and was a major disappointment to the Steelers. He was removed from the active roster Dec. 22 for what the team said were personal reasons and not the result of an injury. He was expected to battle for playing time this season but those plans might be put on hold. We'll keep you posted on the latest with him throughout the summer, but don't go counting on him for help in Fantasy.
News: Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed injured his left Achilles tendon during the final day of a three-day minicamp, and coach Mike Tomlin says the injury could be serious. Sweed was hurt during a routine passing drill on Sunday and was taken off the Steelers' indoor practice field on a cart. He later left the team's practice facility on crutches. If the Achilles is ruptured, Sweed likely would miss the season.

News: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was suspended for six games without pay Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and ordered to undergo behavioral evaluation. Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement a week after prosecutors decided not to charge Roethlisberger after a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexually assaulting her in a Georgia nightclub in March. Goodell said the league's conduct policy gave him the right to impose discipline. Roethlisberger must undergo a "comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals" and may not attend any team offseason activities until that evaluation is completed. The suspension could be reduced to four games for good behavior. Sitting out all six games would cost him an estimated $2.8 million. With Roethlisberger out, the Steelers plan to have Dennis Dixon and Byron Leftwich compete for the starting job. Charlie Batch is also on the roster. With the suspension, Steelers receivers Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Limas Sweed and Heath Miller will have a new starting QB.
Analysis: Sweed had minimal Fantasy value even before Big Ben was suspended so don't plan on drafting him now. He could improve once Roethlisberger returns from the suspension, but then you can add Sweed off the waiver wire.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed might have the chance at putting up some added stats following the trade of Santonio Holmes to the Jets. Antwaan Randle El and Arnaz Battle will also compete for playing time.
Analysis: Sweed has had potential to be solid since coming out of Texas three offseasons ago, but workout and preparation habits have limited his work on the field. Maybe that changes in 2010, maybe not, but until he proves that he'll be a significant part of the Steelers' offense, he shouldn't be drafted.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers say wide receiver Limas Sweed and long snapper Greg Warren will miss the rest of the season. Sweed, a former second-round draft pick, is on the reserve non-football illness list. Warren, a fifth-year pro, has been placed on the reserve/injured list. He injured his right knee after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on the final play of Sunday's game against Green Bay. The team said Monday that it will add two players to its 53-man roster before Sunday's regular-season home finale against Baltimore.
Analysis: Both Sweed and Warren were never really Fantasy options this season and can be left on waivers in all leagues going forward.
News: The Steelers' list of inactives for Week 15 against the Packers includes WR Limas Sweed, QB Charlie Batch, DB Keenan Lewis, DL Ra'Shon Harris and DL Nick Eason.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to have significant Fantasy appeal.
News:Matt Spaeth, Stefan Logan, Limas Sweed, Tyler Grisham, Mewelde Moore, David Johnson and Dennis Dixon all failed to record a stat in the Steelers' Week 14 loss at Cleveland on Thursday.
Analysis: Moore is the only one of these players with any Fantasy value and he is just a handcuff for Rashard Mendenhall. The rest of them have little to no Fantasy value.
News: Pittsburgh TE David Johnson, TE Matt Spaeth, WR Limas Sweed and backup QB Dennis Dixon were all active for the Week 13 loss to the Raiders. None picked up any stats. Dixon did not get into the game at all.
Analysis: None of these guys should be considered useful for seasonal Fantasy leagues going forward. The Steelers play at Cleveland in Week 14.
News: Steelers backup QB Tyler Palko, WR Limas Sweed, WR/KR Stefan Logan and TEs David Johnson and Matt Spaeth were active for Week 12 at Baltimore but did not record any offensive stats.
Analysis: None of these guys should be considered useful for seasonal Fantasy leagues going forward.
News: Pittsburgh had several players not factor into the offense in the Week 10 win against Cincinnati. Steelers WR Limas Sweed, WR Stefan Logan, TE David Johnson and QB Charlie Batch all dressed but did not record an offensive stat against the Bengals.
Analysis: It's safe to ignore all these players for Week 11 at Kansas City. They do not play enough or record enough offensive production to use against the Chiefs.
News: Pittsburgh had several players not factor into the offense in the Week 9 win at Denver on Monday night. Steelers WR Limas Sweed, TE Matt Spaeth, FB Carey Davis and TE David Johnson all played but did not stat. Backup QB Charlie Batch did not play.
Analysis: None of the players on this list are expected to have much Fantasy appeal this season. Leave them on the waiver wire in all leagues for Week 10 against the Bengals.
News: The Steelers have listed the following players as inactive for Week 7 against the Vikings: QB Dennis Dixon (3rd), DE Ra'Shon Harris, CB Keenan Lewis, LB Andre Frazier, WR Limas Sweed and FB Carey Davis.
Analysis: None of the players on this list are expected to have much Fantasy appeal this season. Leave them on the waiver wire in all leagues.
News: The Steelers listed the following players as inactive for Week 6 against Cleveland: QB Dennis Dixon, WR Limas Sweed, DB Keenan Lewis, RB Carey Davis, LB Andre Frazier, DL Ra'Shon Harris.
Analysis: None of the players on this list are expected to have much Fantasy appeal this season. Leave them on the waiver wire in all leagues.
News: Pittsburgh TE Matt Spaeth saw a start in Week 5 in a win over the Lions but did not make any catches. Also playing in the game but not making any statistics were: WR Limas Sweed, RB Carey Davis and TE David Johnson. Backup QB Charlie Batch did not play.
Analysis: These players hardly ever do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for now; the Steelers play Cleveland Week 6.
News: Pittsburgh has announced that RB Willie Parker is inactive for Week 4 at home against the Chargers on Sunday night. The following other players are also inactive: WR Limas Sweed, DB Roy Lewis, TE David Johnson and 3rd QB Dennis Dixon.
Analysis: Sweed has been relegated to the bottom of the depth chart and Mike Tomlin is not happy about his pass-catching ability of late. He does not need to be owned in Fantasy play right now, though he could become viable later in the year. The rest of the names above, save Parker, do not need to be owned in Fantasy.
News: Steelers receiver Limas Sweed may have dropped his way onto the bench. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday he may deactivate Sweed, the team's second-round pick last year, for Sunday night's game against the Chargers. "Absolutely," Tomlin said at his weekly news conference when asked if he was considering benching Sweed in favor of veteran Shaun McDonald. Sweed had one catch for 5 yards and dropped a pass in the end zone in the third quarter on Sunday as the defending Super Bowl champions fell to 1-2 with a 23-20 loss to the Bengals. Sweed, who missed the previous game with a foot injury, has a history of dropped passes in his young career - most famously a drop while wide open during last season's AFC Championship game. "Quite frankly, he's not catching the football when he's deep down the field," Tomlin said. "He's got some tape that shows that. He's got to shake that off. If and when he's given his next opportunity to make a similar play, he better make it."
Analysis: Tomlin said he was "concerned" about Sweed's inability to catch the ball when he's open. It is clear that rookie Mike Wallace, who is third on the team with 12 catches for 147 yards, has moved ahead of Sweed on the depth chart. Sweed is a safe drop in all leagues at this point.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed, who looked like the team's No. 3 WR coming into the season, had only one catch for five yards Week 3 at Cincinnati. Rookie Mike Wallace, his primary competition for the No. 3 job, had seven catches for 102 yards.
Analysis: Wallace seems to have displaced Sweed on the depth chart, leaving Sweeed with little Fantasy appeal. As the fourth receiver on a balance offense, he doesn't figure to get many grabs each week. Leave him on waivers for Week 4 against the Chargers.
News: The Steelers' list of inactives for Week 2 at Chicago includes LB Arnold Harrison, QB Dennis Dixon, DL Nick Eason, DB Keenan Lewis and WR Limas Sweed.
Analysis: None of these players does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy even when active. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed won't play Sunday against the Chicago Bears because of a sprained foot. Sweed was hurt during practice Wednesday and hasn't practiced since. Rookie Mike Wallace is expected to be the Steelers' No. 3 receiver, with Shaun McDonald taking Sweed's spot on the active roster.
Analysis: Sweed dressed for Week 1's game against the Titans but did not end up with a stat in the game. Keep him on your bench or waiver wire for Week 2 at Chicago and don't activate him until further notice.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed won't play Sunday against the Bears because of a sprained foot. Sweed was hurt during practice Wednesday and hasn't practiced since. Rookie Mike Wallace is expected to be the Steelers' No. 3 receiver, with Shaun McDonald taking Sweed's spot on the active roster.
Analysis: Sweed played in the Steelers' first game against the Titans but did not record a stat. He would not be recommended for Week 2 whether he was injured or not, so just keep him out of all lineups Week 2. Wallace and McDonald should also remain inactive for Week 2.
News: WR Limas Sweed were listed on the Steelers' injury report as having limited participation in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Sweed has a mid-foot sprain and is not expected to play against the Bears this week.
Analysis: Sweed dressed for Week 1's game against the Titans but did not end up with a stat in the game. Keep him on your bench or waiver wire for Week 2 at Chicago.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette warns not to read too much into the way Mike Wallace was used in Week 1 against Tennessee. Limas Sweed remains the team's No. 3 wide receiver.
Analysis: The Post-Gazette adds that while Wallace took nearly all of the snaps as the third receiver, it wasn't by design. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said he even told Sweed after the game that he didn't mean to keep him on the bench as much as he did. Arians wants to involve Sweed, last year's No. 2 draft choice, in the offense this season, especially after his productive preseason. And he insists Sweed and Wallace are interchangeable in that role, meaning either one could end up getting most of the snaps in a given game. For now, we consider both receivers as reserve options who may be useful during bye weeks as one-week replacements in larger leagues, but no more. Don't use either for Week 2 at Chicago.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed dressed for a Week 1 win against the Titans, but the second-year receiver recorded no catches or targets.
Analysis: Sweed really has a golden opportunity to be part of the Steelers' passing game in 2009 since Nate Washington left in the offseason for Tennessee. Pittsburgh needs a third receiver behind Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward. However, it seems the rookie Mike Wallace has currently passed Sweed on the depth chart. The former Texas standout is not looking like a very attractive Fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Bears.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed will head into Thursday night's opener against the Titans as the likely No. 3 wide receiver, after spending 2008 as a rarely-used No. 4 option.
Analysis: Sweed is a nice low-end sleeper option in deeper Fantasy leagues heading into the 2009 season thanks to the departure of Nate Washington to Tennessee. Stash him away and just hope he sees enough targets from Ben Roethlisberger to be worth using during bye weeks.
News: Pittsburgh WR Limas Sweed took advantage of a missing Santonio Holmes in Saturday's preseason win over the Bills. Sweed caught four passes for 34 yards with a long of 16. Steelers' wideout Shaun McDonald caught two passes for 18 yards.
Analysis: Sweed proved he's ready to step up if the Steelers' need him this year as a capable No. 3 WR. He's still vying for the job with McDonald, but it seems, after Saturday's game at least, the job is Sweed's to lose at the moment. You can still treat Sweed, or McDonald if he wins the job, as a low-end Fantasy reserve to begin the year.
News: Pittsburgh WR Shaun McDonald continues to be locked in a battle to become the Steelers' No. 3 wide receiver, a job vacated when Nate Washington signed with Tennessee. McDonald, second-year WR Limas Sweed and rookie Mike Wallace are all vying for the job. "Im kind of worried about what I can do," said McDonald. "I know I can play. But do I fit in with what theyre trying to do? I just have to show what I can do and hopefully I fit in with what theyre trying to do."
Analysis: Whichever receiver actually wins the No. 3 WR job behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes will be, at best, merely a low-end Fantasy reserve to begin the season. They will have one-week values at times but shouldn't be more than mid-season waiver wire pickups.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed, trying to win the No. 3 receiver's job vacated by Nate Washington, hooked up with Charlie Batch on a 45-yard pass play to the Cardinals 39 that led to Jeff Reed's 50-yard field goal in the second quarter of Thursday's preseason game. Sweed drew cheers while making two catches for 56 yards in his first game at Heinz Field since, while wide open, he dropped an apparent TD pass in the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore. "I just wanted to catch the ball -- and hold on to it," Sweed said.
Analysis: Sweed was hardly a factor for the Steelers as a rookie in 2008. He posted six catches for 64 yards in 11 games. With a vacancy in the wide receiver rotation, Pittsburgh would like to count on Sweed a bit more this season. Sweed is merely a low-end Fantasy reserve to begin the season.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed tweaked his hamstring Sunday, but he's on the field Monday showing no problems.
Analysis: Sweed, who is expected to replace the departed Nate Washington as the No. 3 WR in Pittsburgh, has the chance to be a sleeper in deep formats. Don't draft Sweed in standard leagues, but he is worth a late-round flier in larger leagues.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Limas Sweed (hamstring) didn't finish practice on Sunday.
Analysis: Sweed, a second-round pick in 2008, may be the top candidate to replace Nate Washington as Pittsburgh's No. 3 receiver. This injury is not considered serious. He's probably not going to make a major dent in 2009 but could develop into a phenom by 2010, his third NFL season. As such, Sweed is a guy worth a look in dynasty/keeper leagues with a late-round pick. Owners in seasonal formats can get away with passing on him and hope to grab him off the waiver wire if he takes off.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians identified second-year WR Limas Sweed as a candidate to replace WR Nate Washington in the Steelers' receiving rotation. Between the regular season and postseason, Sweed had 84 yards receiving. "Limas has the ability to do it. He just has to continue to grow and be consistent," Arians said. "He's shown the ability to get behind people and that was the No. 1 thing Nate gave us, the ability to stretch coverage."
Analysis: Sweed has immense size (6-foot-4) and good speed and should eventually evolve into a nice NFL receiver. He just needs to put it all together.
News: The following Steelers did not record an offensive statistic in Week 16 at Tennessee: QB Byron Leftwich, TE Matt Spaeth, WR Limas Sweed, RB Gary Russell, RB Carey Davis and TE Sean McHugh.
Analysis: The Steelers lost on Sunday and were locked into their playoff position as the No. 2 seed in the AFC. That means that these players could be seeing more playing time in Week 17 against Cleveland. However, we don't recommend riding a Fantasy title on any of them.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed, TE Matt Spaeth, RB Carey Davis and QB Byron Leftwich all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 15 at Baltimore.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves for the Steelers and don't contribute a lot offensively on a weekly basis. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 16 against the Titans.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed, TE Sean McHugh and QB Byron Leftwich all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 14 vs. Dallas.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves for the Steelers and don't contribute a lot offensively on a weekly basis. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 15 against the Ravens.
News: Pittsburgh had several players active for Week 13's drubbing of the New England Patriots who did not record any stats. They are as follows: TE Sean McHugh, WR Limas Sweed and backup QB Byron Leftwich.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for Week 14 against Dallas.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed had two receptions for 25 yards Week 12 against the Bengals. He also lost a fumble. He entered the game with only four receptions all season.
Analysis: Sweed has a spot low on the Steelers depth chart, so don't bother with him in Fantasy. The Steelers visit the Patriots in Week 13.
News: The following Steelers players did not record an offensive statistic in Week 11 against San Diego: QB Byron Leftwich, WR Limas Sweed and RB Carey Davis.
Analysis: None of the players on this list should be considered viable Fantasy option. They are not in a position to contribute regular stats as they aren't in line for regular playing time. They've got some depth chart climbing to do and should be left on the waiver wire.
News: Steelers RB Carey Davis, WR Limas Sweed, RB Gary Russell and QB Byron Leftwich all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 10 vs. Indianapolis.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves for the Steelers and factor little into the offense. It's no surprise they were held off the stat sheet Week 10. Continue to ignore them in Fantasy heading into Week 11. The Steelers play the Chargers.
News: Steelers RB Carey Davis, WR Limas Sweed, RB Gary Russell, TE Sean McHugh and WR Dallas Baker didn't record offensive statistics Week 9 at Washington.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed caught three passes for 28 yards in Week 8 against the Giants. His longest catch went for 12 yards.
Analysis: Sweed got a chance to climb up the depth chart with Santonio Holmes suspended by the team for an off the field incident. But he did not produce much and is too erratic to be relied upon in Fantasy at this stage. Leave him reserved in all leagues for Week 9 at Washington.
News: Steelers WR Limas Sweed caught one pass for 11 yards in Week 7 at Cincinnati. He was thrown to just the one time in the game.
Analysis: Sweed is only worth owning in dynasty/keeper league play. Do not count on him for extensive stats anytime soon.
News: Despite being a second-round pick, Steelers rookie WR Limas Sweed hasn't been able to beat out backups Nate Washington and Dallas Baker and was deactivated for four of the first five games. He didn't play in the one game he was in uniform. He might be active for Week 7 at Cincinnati because of an injury to Baker. "He just needs to have consistency in route running, catching the football and assignments," coach Mike Tomlin said. "It's that simple. He has improved and, really, he's been on the brink of deserving an opportunity."
Analysis: Sweed is only worth owning in dynasty/keeper league play. Do not count on him for extensive stats anytime soon.
News: The Steelers listed QB Dennis Dixon, WR Limas Sweed, LB Donovan Woods, DL Casey Hampton and DL Brett Keisel among their inactives for Week 4 against the Ravens.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to have Fantasy value when healthy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Steelers QB Dennis Dixon, WR Limas Sweed, DB Deshea Townsend, LB Bruce Davis, LB Donovan Woods and DL Brett Keisel are all inactive for Week 3 at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Townsend is the only starter among Week 3's inactive, and when he is healthy, he is merely a low-end Fantasy DB. Most of these inactive players have little to no Fantasy value and should be kept off Fantasy rosters.
News: The Steelers listed QB Dennis Dixon, WR Limas Sweed, RB Gary Russell, DL Bruce Davis and DL Orpheus Roye among their inactives for Week 2 at Cleveland.
Analysis: None of these players has any Fantasy appeal. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Pittsburgh rookie WR Limas Sweed was active for Thursday's preseason finale against the Panthers but he didn't make any catches. Sweed almost caught a ball in the endzone for a touchdown, but the play was ruled out of bounds. It was still a nice grab.
Analysis: Sweed will likely make some plays down the road for the Steelers this season. For now, take him with a late-round pick in deep seasonal leagues and with a third-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Steelers rookie WR Limas Sweed is day-to-day with a minor knee injury. Coach Mike Tomlin said Sweed should be fine.
Analysis: Sweed will likely make some plays down the road for the Steelers this season. For now, take him with a late-round pick in deep seasonal leagues and with a third-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News:Steelers WR Limas Sweed certainly has the size, speed and ability to be impressive, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That's one of the reasons the Steelers couldn't pass him up with the 53rd overall pick in the NFL draft, even though wide receiver wasn't a position of need. But his teammates believe he is trying too hard because he wants to make an immediate impact. Sweed, of course, doesn't have to be an immediate contributor, nor is he expected to be right away. He will begin the season as the No. 4 receiver, behind Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington.
Analysis: Sweed will likely make some plays down the road for the Steelers. For now, take him with a late-round pick in deep seasonal leagues and with a third-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: Pittsburgh WR Limas Sweed is attempting to earn a place among the Steelers wide receiving corps this season but didn't help his cause -- or Byron Leftwich's -- Thursday against the Bills. Sweed finished with 2 catches for 9 yards and dropped an easy pass from Leftwich that went right through his hands.
Analysis: When you are attempting to win playing time in the NFL it's never a good idea to drop easy passes in preseason games. Sweed led the Steelers in receiving in their preseason opener but three catches for 23 yards isn't going to get anyone into the Pro Bowl. Sweed is a big, rangy receiver with a lot of experience and athleticism. He's also a little injury prone (a wrist injury cut his senior year at Texas short) but should be a good situational receiver for the Steelers in 2008. Stats are expected to be limited as a rookie but he should develop into a quality player. Don't go after him in seasonal formats, but do grab him with a top-24 pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: Pittsburgh rookie wideout Limas Sweed led the Steelers in receiving yardage and catches on Friday night in the team's first preseason game against the Eagles. Sweed caught 3 passes for 23 yards.
Analysis: OK, so nobody on the Steelers receiving corps did much of anything in the team's first preseason contest but it is good news that Sweed was the leader.
News: In an interview with CBSSports.com, Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said that rookie WR Limas Sweed, who left Wednesday's practice on a cart, would be fine. "He's going to be real good, I think," Arians said, adding that he dazzled at camp with a terrific jump-ball touchdown catch in a drill that Ben Roethlisberger noticed. Sweed is battling for the No. 4 WR spot in camp, Arians said.
Analysis: Sweed is a big, rangy receiver with a lot of experience and athleticism.
News: Second-round draft pick Limas Sweed and offensive lineman Jeremy Parquet couldn't finish the Pittsburgh Steelers' second practice Wednesday because of cramping. Neither player is expected to miss any additional time. Sweed, a wide receiver from Texas who will play a key role in the offense, was taken off the field on a cart late in the afternoon practice -- creating concerns he injured a hamstring or a groin. He caught a touchdown pass during a drill earlier in the practice. "We took him off to protect him," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's a guy who's run all day, who's run a bunch and had some opportunities and the body betrayed him a little bit."
Analysis: Sweed was taken with the 53rd overall pick in the April draft. He was sixth in Texas history with 124 catches and fifth with 1,915 yards receiving. His 20 career TD catches are the second most for a Longhorns receiver. The 6-foot-4, 212-pounder is expected to give the Steelers an additional downfield threat to go with Santonio Holmes, who led the team with eight touchdown catches last season. Hines Ward, Holmes and Sweed are expected to be the Steelers' top three receivers. Consider drafting Sweed in the middle rounds of most keeper leagues and late in larger seasonal formats. It doesn't appear as though he is nursing a serious injury.
News: Pittsburgh rookie wide receiver Limas Sweed signed a four-year contract Sunday, putting all the Steelers' draft picks under contract as training camp started. The Steelers' players reported Sunday and the team's first two practices will be Monday.

News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the Steelers are counting on rookie WR Limas Sweed cracking their rotation at wide receiver this season, which is not unexpected. But what may be surprising is that the Steelers apparently think his size, speed and long arms can also help on special teams. The Steelers picked Sweed in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and the 6-foot-4, 219-pounder is expected to give them the rangy wideout they have lacked since Plaxico Burress left as a free agent following the 2004 season. While his primary objective has been learning the offense and developing rapport with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the other wideouts, Sweed said he hasn't minded the work he has gotten on special teams during offseason practices.
Analysis: This isn't uncommon for a rookie wide receiver. Consider drafting Sweed in the middle rounds of most keeper leagues and late in larger seasonal formats.
News: Steelers rookie WR Limas Sweed, who was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, lined up at the team's first minicamp as the No. 4 wide receiver, playing behind starter Santonio Holmes. He is behind Holmes, Hines Ward and Nate Washington right now on the depth chart, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports it all could change between now and the start of the season. Randy Fichtner, who coaches the Steelers wide receivers, believes Sweed can be an integral part of the Steelers offense as a rookie. "I don't think there's any question," Fichtner said. "Obviously there's a learning curve, but that hits everybody. But I know that he's capable of learning." Fichtner envisioned Sweed claiming the No. 3 job this year. Moments after they drafted him, he said, "It tickles you to death because you're looking at a three group that's really strong and a possibility of Nate Washington being four is really exciting."
Analysis: Look for Sweed to play a prominent role in the Steelers offense as a rookie and eventually replace Washington as the No. 3 option. Consider drafting Sweed in the middle rounds of most keeper leagues and late in larger seasonal formats. Washington should not be drafted in any formats at this time.
