News: The Patriots announced Tuesday they have released veteran CB Shawn Springs. He was signed by the Patriots as a free agent on March 11, 2009 and played in 12 games with eight starts last season, finishing with 39 total tackles, one interception and four passes defensed.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Springs and if he signs with a new team. But he has minimal Fantasy value and is not worth drafting in IDP leagues this season.
News: New England lost cornerback Shawn Springs in the first half of Sunday's wild-card playoff game against Baltimore with a head injury. Springs joined the Patriots as a free agent this season and started eight games, playing in 12 overall. He missed four games in the middle of the season with a knee injury.
Analysis: Springs is an aging NFL veteran and isn't expected to produce as a Fantasy-viable IDP player next season. He should go undrafted on Draft Day 2010.
News: The Patriots had several defenders play well Sunday against Jacksonville. LB Jerod Mayo had 15 tackles, DB Brandon Meriweather had six tackles and an interception, LB Tully Banta-Cain had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, LB Gary Guyton had five tackles and a sack and DB Shawn Springs had three tackles and an interception.
Analysis: The Patriots have several solid players on defense, especially Mayo. Plan on using all your regular IDP option in Week 17 at Houston.
News: The Patriots have listed the following players as inactive for Week 13: DB Shawn Springs, DB Terrence Wheatley, DL Ron Brace, RB Fred Taylor and WR Julian Edelman.
Analysis: Taylor and Edelman are the only players in this group with any Fantasy value, so be sure to bench them in all formats. The others can continue to be ignored.
News: The following players have been listed as inactive for Week 12 at New Orleans on Monday night for the Patriots: WR Julian Edelman, RB Fred Taylor, CB Kyle Arrington, CB Shawn Springs and LB Junior Seau.
Analysis: Edelman returned from a forearm injury in Week 11 but was back listed as inactive for Week 12. He has very low-end Fantasy value. Taylor has been out since Week 4 and might not return to action this season. Continue to stash him in just deeper formats just in case he does come back. Everyone else listed above does not need to be owned at this time.
News: Patriots WR Sam Aiken, DL Jarvis Green, DL Steve Neal, DL Rob Ninkovich and DB Shawn Springs have all been ruled inactive for Week 11 vs. N.Y. Jets.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves or special teams contributors for the Patriots when active. They have little to no Fantasy value and should be kept reserved in Week 11.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris, RB Fred Taylor, DL Jarvis Green, LB Eric Alexander, DL Ty Warren and DB Shawn Springs have been ruled out of the team's Week 10 game at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Morris and Taylor have a shot to put up some numbers once they're healthy enough to return, but the rest of these players have little to no Fantasy value.
News: New England DB Brandon Meriweather led the Patriots in tackles in Week 1's win over the Bills on Monday night. Meriweather finished with 8 tackles. Shawn Springs finished with five tackles.
Analysis: Meriweather is a solid No. 3 DB in IDP leagues most weeks. The Patriots meet the Jets in New York in Week 2 and he could have a nice performance against a rookie QB. Springs really isn't worth using on a week-to-week basis as an IDP player at this later stage of his career.
News: Patriots DB Shawn Springs made his preseason debut Thursday against the Bengals after missing the first game while on the Active/NFI list (undisclosed). Springs had an assisted tackle before calling it a night.
Analysis: Springs is in his first season with the Patriots after spending the last five with Washington. Springs has had a lot of injury-plagued seasons in his career, so we aren't sure what type of player we are going to see in 2009. Springs has a chance to start and make a huge impact with the Patriots, but he is merely a low-end Fantasy DB Draft Day.
News: The Patriots announced Thursday that they have placed five players on the Active/PUP list and two players on the Active/NFI list. The team placed LB Shawn Crable, OL Mark LeVoir, OL Rich Ohrnberger, DL Darryl Richard and DT Ty Warren on the Active/PUP list. CB Shawn Springs and WR Brandon Tate were placed on the Active/NFI list.
Analysis: Warren and Springs have low-end value in IDP leagues, and it's worth monitoring what happens during training camp. Tate is likely going to miss his rookie year, and he should not be drafted in seasonal leagues this season.
News: According to numerous reports, the Patriots and CB Shawn Springs have agreed to a three-year contract that will bring the veteran defender to New England and help them shore up their defensive shortcomings from 2008. Most significantly, Springs will now continue to defend against Terrell Owens, who was signed by division-rival Buffalo. Springs and Owens have a long-standing rivalry dating back to T.O.'s days with the Eagles and Cowboys and Springs with the Redskins. Springs will almost certainly be asked to defend against Owens by himself in Bills-Patriots games this season.
Analysis: Springs won't play every snap this season and will be used in a rotation with three other good corners, including Leigh Bodden, who the Patriots also signed. Consider Springs nothing more than a useful low-end DB when faced with a favorable matchup this season. He's not worth drafting.
News: At the start of the free agency period, CB Shawn Springs was released by the Redskins. The club dedicated a ton of money to CB DeAngelo Hall and DT Albert Haynesworth, forcing them to release the veteran. "Shawn has been the consummate professional," Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said in a statement. "He has played multiple positions in the defensive backfield and was a strong contributor in his five seasons with the Redskins. We wish him the very best and are confident he will find an opportunity in the National Football League."
Analysis: Springs still can play in the NFL and a club looking for a cornerback will give him a look. Though he's a veteran, he can still play at a fairly decent level. He's best known for his work against Terrell Owens over the last couple of meetings he had with him.
News: Redskins LB London Fletcher, who was dealing with a sprained foot, is active Sunday at Baltimore and will start. DB Shawn Springs, however, is out with a calf strain.
Analysis: Keep Fletcher active in all leagues as a No. 2 LB in IDP leagues. Keep Springs reserved. And the Redskins DST is a No. 2 Fantasy option against the Ravens.
News: Zorn said linebacker London Fletcher (sprained foot) and cornerback Shawn Springs (calf) did not practice, but he is optimistic both will play. As is becoming his custom, the coach hedged his bets by saying they will be game-time decisions. New to the injury list was safety LaRon Landry, who was kicked in the calf during Thursday's practice. "He's going to be OK," Zorn said.
Analysis: All three of these guys are usable Fantasy options, Fletcher as a No. 1 LB, Landry and Springs as No. 3 DBs. Consider them as such against the Ravens in Week 14.
News: The NFL Network is reports Redskins DE Jason Taylor and CB Shawn Springs will play Sunday against the Cowboys.
Analysis: This is good news for the Redskins DST. Consider Taylor a No. 2 DL in IDP leagues and Springs a No. 3 DB.
News: The Redskins listed QB Colt Brennan, WR Malcolm Kelly, DB Shawn Springs, RB Ladell Betts and Rob Jackson among their inactives for Week 9 against the Steelers.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to matter in Fantasy even when healthy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Redskins RB Ladell Betts (knee), WR Malcolm Kelly (knee) and DB Shawn Springs (calf) have all been ruled out for Week 9 vs. Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Betts only has increased Fantasy value when Clinton Portis is sidelined. Springs is a starter for Washington, but not a big stats guy and has limited Fantasy appeal. Kelly has been injured all season and should only be owned in the deepest of long-term keeper leagues. Continue to keep these players reserved Week 9.
News: Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs is expected to miss the game next week against Pittsburgh. He will sit out a third consecutive game with a strained left calf. "We're going to hold him out," Zorn said.
Analysis: The loss of Springs won't be felt too much in IDP leagues, as he's only a low-end bye-week replacement Fantasy DB in IDP formats. Keep him off of rosters for now.
News: Washington will be without backup RB Ladell Betts in Week 8 at Detroit. The Redskins listed the following players as also being inactive this week: QB Colt Brennan (3rd QB), DB Shawn Springs, DB Chris Horton, WR Malcolm Kelly and DL Cornelius Griffin.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and remains out in Week 8 against the Lions. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis, anyway. The rest of these guys have little Fantasy value. Horton was coming on in his rookie season and was gaining value but isn't really recommended just yet.
News: Redskins WR Malcolm Kelly (knee), DL Cornelius Griffin (shoulder) and DB Shawn Springs (calf) have all been ruled out Week 8 at Detroit.
Analysis: Kelly, Griffin and Springs don't always fill the stat sheet when active and are not big-time Fantasy options when healthy. Keep them reserved Week 8.
News: Redskins DT Cornelius Griffin's sprained right shoulder will keep him out of Sunday's game against the Lions. Griffin has been playing hurt since injuring the shoulder Oct. 5 against Philadelphia. Coach Jim Zorn said it was time to let Griffin heal. "I'm going to hold him out," Zorn said. "I just want to give him a real rest." Third-year lineman Anthony Montgomery will likely start in Griffin's place. CB Shawn Springs is expected to sit out for the second straight week - and for the third time in four games - with a strained left calf. Fred Smoot would start again opposite Carlos Rogers.
Analysis: Keep Springs and Griffin out in IDP leagues, although both have minimal Fantasy value when healthy. The Redskins DST remains a good start against the Lions even without those two players. Last year, Washington held Detroit to three points in a 34-3 victory.
News: Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs appears likely to miss at least one more game with a calf injury, while defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin might need a game off to deal with a nagging shoulder injury. Cornerback Fred Smoot is still nursing a sore groin and might have to miss some practice this week.
Analysis: None of these players post enough stats to warrant use in IDP league play. Keep them off rosters until further notice.
News: The Redskins have listed the following players as being inactive for Week 7 against the Browns: RB Ladell Betts, QB Colt Brennan (3rd QB), WR Malcolm Kelly, DB Shawn Springs, DL Erasmus James and DL Rob Jackson.
Analysis: Betts suffered a knee injury against St. Louis in Week 6 and might miss this and the next week with the injury. Betts is only worth owning in Fantasy play as an insurance policy for those owners who have Clinton Portis, anyway. The rest of these guys are not viable Fantasy options at this time.
News: Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs was unable to practice Friday and was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Springs aggravated a calf injury near the end of Thursday's practice. The injury caused Springs to miss the victory over Philadelphia two weeks ago, but he returned to play last week against St. Louis. "He had some tightness in his calf muscle, so that'll be a game-time deal," coach Jim Zorn said. "He says he wants to play - don't know if he'll be fit to play. It's probably not good, but I'm the optimist."
Analysis: The loss of Springs won't be felt too much in IDP leagues, as he's only a low-end bye-week replacement Fantasy DB in IDP formats. Keep him off of rosters for now.
News: Washington CB Shawn Springs totaled three tackles and a sack on Sunday in Week 6 in a loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Springs has 16 tackles in four games this season with no interceptions. He has been hit by the injury bug a few times in his career, but is usually a shutdown corner when healthy. He remains a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Cornerback Shawn Springs, who missed Week 5's game against the Cowboys with a strained left calf, practiced and appears set to play Sunday against the Rams.
Analysis: Springs has 13 tackles in three games this season with no interceptions. He has been hit by the injury bug a few times in his career, but is usually a shutdown corner when healthy. He remains a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Washington defensive starters DB Shawn Springs, DE Jason Taylor and LB Marcus Washington are all inactive and out for Week 5 against the Eagles in Philadelphia.
Analysis: The loss of all three individually won't be felt too much in IDP leagues, as they are only low-end Fantasy IDP players in IDP formats. However, the Redskins DST takes a bit of a blow being without a starting corner, end and linebacker. The Skins are just a low-end bye-week replacement option, especially against a solid Philly offense in Week 5.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins DB Shawn Springs' is highly likely to be among the inactives for the Redskins' Week 5 game at the Eagles.
Analysis: The loss of Springs won't be felt too much in IDP leagues, as he's only a low-end bye-week replacement Fantasy DB in IDP formats. However, the Redskins DST takes a bit of a blow. Still think of them as an OK bye-week replacement, but you should probably lower your expectations.
News: The Washington Post is reporting that although cornerback Shawn Springs did not practice all week because of a calf injury, he could play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Jim Zorn said after practice yesterday at Redskins Park. "Shawn Springs, to me, is still a question mark," Zorn said. "I just want to see what happens on Sunday for him. He would be one guy I would definitely play without the reps."
Analysis: Springs is a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats, but his presence is key to a decent Redskins DST. Don't start him in Week 5 vs. Philadelphia, but feel free to rely on the Washington DST as a decent bye-week replacement option.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn held out hope Springs would be able to play Sunday against the Eagles. Springs strained a calf muscle in the second half of last week's win over the Dallas Cowboys. Zorn had initially indicated he would need to see Springs practice during the week before allowing him to play, but on Friday the coach said he'll give the veteran cornerback more time to heal over the weekend. "Shawn Springs to me is still a question mark," Zorn said. "I just want to see on Sunday for him. He would be one guy I would definitely play without the (practice) reps." Springs was listed as questionable on the injury report.
Analysis: Springs is a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats. Don't start him in Week 5 vs. Philadelphia.
News: Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs didn't practice Thursday because of a strained calf muscle and is unlikely to play at Philadelphia in Week 5. "Just with his calf, it's not responding well yet," Zorn said. "The light is fading if we're expecting him to play on Sunday."
Analysis: Springs is a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats. Don't start him in Week 5 vs. Philadelphia.
News: The Washington Times reports that Redskins CB Shawn Springs had treatment on his left calf Tuesday and said he's walking fine.
Analysis: Springs is a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats, but his presence is key to a decent Redskins DST. Don't start him in Week 5 vs. Philadelphia, but feel free to rely on the Washington DST as a decent bye-week replacement option.
News: Washington CB Shawn Springs shut down Terrell Owens for one half of play in Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys. Then, Springs hurt himself. Springs had four tackles but left the game with what was revealed as a possible calf strain. The Washington Post reports that Springs said he felt something pop.
Analysis: You never want to hear anything "pop" when you are a football player. Springs was playing great defense on Owens when he had to come out. He's a low-end Fantasy DB, when healthy, so hopefully he doesn't miss much time. Still, we don't suggest starting him in Week 5 in Philadelphia unless it comes out that he's completely healthy. Stay tuned.
News: At the end of Thursday's practice, Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn figured it was time to cure the interception drop-itis that affected his team in the first game. He came up with an exercise in which he and his quarterbacks drilled quick passes to each of the defensive backs, who caught the ball while shuttling back and fourth about 10 yards away. Carlos Rogers, notorious for having stone hands, caught all five of his passes. Fred Smoot dropped three and had to repeat the exercise, drawing plenty of grief from his teammates. To no one's surprise, Shawn Springs went 5-for-5. "How'd I look?" Springs said with a smile as he walked off the field. "Good enough to play receiver?" Perhaps, but definitely good enough to play cornerback.
Analysis: Cornerback is where the Redskins need Springs, and where he was sorely missed when he had to sit out the season-opening loss to the New York Giants. Springs was a late scratch with a deep bruise from getting kicked in the shin at practice earlier in the week. He watched from the sideline as Plaxico Burress roamed through the Washington secondary to collect 10 passes for 133 yards. Springs said the injury felt like "taking a 2-by-4 across your shin," but that he's now healthy and ready for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. "Shawn's our most experienced corner," defensive coordinator Greg Blache said. "He's got real good hands. He's got a lot of savvy, and it'll really help us a great deal to have Shawn back." Consider Springs a low-end Fantasy DB when healthy. His return helps the Redskins DST, but they are still a No. 2 option against a potent offense like New Orleans.
News: Redskins CB Fred Smoot, who was hit in the back with a knee in the third quarter Week 1 vs. the Giants, has a hip pointer. His injury left the Redskins' defensive backfield depleted because Shawn Springs was a surprise scratch with a bruised shin. Both Smoot and Springs are expected to return for the next game, Week 2 vs. New Orleans.
Analysis: The Redskins weren't expecting to be without Springs Week 1, but in the short week, he couldn't shake the injury. Springs had 57 tackles and four interceptions in 2007, and is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy DB when healthy.
News: Redskins DB Shawn Springs (shin) was ruled inactive for Week 1 at N.Y. Giants. He was listed as probable on the injury report and had missed the last two days of practice after being active Monday.
Analysis: The Redskins weren't expecting to be without Springs Week 1, but in the short week, he couldn't shake the injury. Springs had 57 tackles and four interceptions in 2007, and is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy DB when healthy.
News: Redskins DB Shawn Springs (calf) is listed as probable for Week 1 at N.Y. Giants. He did not practice Tuesday or Wednesday after doing so Monday.
Analysis: Springs had a limp after getting kicked during Monday's practice, but it doesn't appear as though the injury is a big issue. Springs had 57 tackles and four interceptions in 2007, but remains a low-end Fantasy DB Week 1.
News:The Washington Times reports that Washington DB Shawn Springs missed Tuesday's practice to get an x-Ray on his calf, which was kicked on Monday. Springs had a noticeable limp while walking out of the Park. There was a long sleeve on his left leg.
Analysis: Springs should be fine to start the regular season on Thursday night against the Giants but he really isn't a viable IDP option anyway. Because of his injury risk, it's OK to find another option if you were planning on starting him.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins coach Jim Zorn had yet to make contact with absent cornerback Shawn Springs as of Tuesday. Springs has been working out in Arizona -- as he did last offseason -- and has told people that he does not intend to report to Redskins Park until the start of mandatory work in training camp. Springs has not contacted the team, however, Zorn said. "We're still wondering where Shawn is," Zorn said, "but he knows what he's doing. We're still trying to reach him." Zorn said that there could be a tendency to allow Springs's absence to frustrate the staff, but that he is not allowing it to do so. "Guys know how to stay aloof, and I could get frustrated," Zorn said. "But I don't get frustrated." Springs reported to camp in shape last season after following a rigorous routine in Arizona that he is maintaining this offseason.
Analysis: Springs is expected to start again for the Redskins. He is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DB in 2008 leagues. Last year, Springs had 62 total tackles in 2007 (57 solo) with four interceptions, a career-high 15 passes defensed and a forced fumble.
News: Redskins CB Shawn Springs totaled 62 total tackles in 2007 (57 solo) with four interceptions, a career-high 15 passes defensed and a forced fumble.
Analysis: Springs' cap number is reportedly at $5 million heading into 2008, but the 'Skins are expected to work their numbers so he doesn't count that much against the cap. He's a low-end No. 3 Fantasy DL in 2008 leagues.
News: Redskins DB Shawn Springs recorded five tackles and one interception during a Week 16 win against the Vikings. He now has three interceptions with all of them coming in the last three games.
Analysis: Springs is finally getting into the mix, just too bad it took him all season to get going. He has more interceptions this season than he did in his previous two. He remains just a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Redskins DB Shawn Springs totaled four tackles (all solo) and two interceptions during a Week 14 win against the Bears. Springs came into the game with zero interceptions in his first 12 contests.
Analysis: Springs had as many interceptions Week 14 as he did in the previous two seasons. He is good for decent interception totals from year to year, but not consistent enough to use outside of being a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: The Redskins did not hold an official practice on Tuesday, just a walk-through in preparation for Week 14 vs. Chicago. Therefore, the team did not release an official injury report. However, the club did reveal that WR James Thrash (ankle) and CB Shawn Springs (undisclosed) did not participate in the walk-through.
Analysis: The club will hand in an official practice report on Wednesday. Neither Thrash nor Springs are worth a roster spot in Fantasy play, so their status shouldn't impact anybody.
News: Redskins DB LaRon Landry (six tackles), DL Anthony Montgomery (five tackles), LB London Fletcher (five tackles), DB Shawn Springs (four tackles), DL Cornelius Griffin (four tackles) and DL Phillip Daniels (four tackles) all helped out in Washington's 19-13 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 12.
Analysis: Fletcher is one of the league's top LBs and should be starting in every IDP league, while Landry is the only other player with any Fantasy value among this group. Start only Fletcher in Week 13 against the Bills.
News: Washington Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs returned from his father's bedside to play in Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Springs spent most of last week in Texas, where former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs remained hospitalized in a coma. Ron Springs, a diabetic, received a kidney donated by ex-teammate Everson Walls in February. "It all started with a simple procedure on his arm," Shawn Springs said. "He needed a cyst removed from his arm." Springs said his father still had pain in the arm after the operation, so a second one was scheduled three days later, on Oct. 11. Springs said his father lost oxygen for a time during the surgery and lapsed into a coma.
Analysis: Springs played two days after his father fell into a coma in last week's loss to Green Bay, then left on Monday to be with his father. He rejoined the Redskins on Friday and played more than expected Sunday after Fred Smoot injured a hamstring. "(Week 7) wasn't too bad," Springs said. "Last week versus Green Bay was worse because that is when I initially found out about my father's situation. ... The guys welcomed me back and in and were all excited to see me. This is my other family, the Redskins family." Springs said he will split time this week between Washington and Dallas, but he said his father wouldn't have wanted him to miss the games. Springs finished with seven solo tackles against the Cardinals. He is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy DB at this time.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Redskins DB Shawn Springs' father, Ron, is in a coma in a Dallas hospital. A former NFL running back, Ron Springs had a kidney transplant this winter but was having unrelated minor surgery on Saturday when he fell into the coma. Shawn, who had teamed with his father on a diabetes awareness campaign, left for Dallas after the Green Bay game in Week 6. The Redskins are leaving his return for Week 7 against the Cardinals up to Springs. "That's strictly up to him," Gibbs said when asked if he expects Springs to play on Sunday. "It's so personal, such a hard deal that they're going through right now. I don't have a sense of that."
Analysis: Springs is a solid NFL defensive back, but is no longer a Fantasy stud because he doesn't always rack up a lot of stats. He is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy DB when healthy. Track his progress leading up to Week 7 if you intend to play him in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: Fred Smoot, who hurt his hamstring during practice on Friday, was downgraded from probable to questionable on Saturday for Week 2 at Philadelphia. If Smoot doesn't play, it would open the door for Shawn Springs to return to the starting lineup after playing mostly in nickel situations last week.
Analysis: Springs totaled three tackles in Week 1, and with a larger role in Week 2, might be able to pad the stats a little more. Still, he is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy DB.
News: Shawn Springs knew he was in for a load of teasing when he decided to train with Walt Harris during the offseason. Harris, a Washington Redskins discard, had eight interceptions and four forced fumbles last year with the San Francisco 49ers. Meanwhile, the entire Redskins team had only 12 takeaways, an NFL record for a non-strike season. "Walt Harris gets on me all the time," Springs said. "He's like, 'Y'all got rid of me and I had 12 myself.' I said, 'Whatever you're doing, I have to start doing.'" The Redskins asked Springs to take a pay cut and shopped him on the trade market this offseason. Springs refused to take less money, and he further frustrated the coaching staff by staying away when voluntary spring practices began in May. He then had to miss most of the June minicamp for the birth of his son.
Analysis: Springs was essentially hurt all last season. He had a sports hernia, a hamstring injury and a broken shoulder blade. He played in only nine games and had one interception. The lack of a healthy No. 1 cornerback helped sink the Redskins defense to the depths of the NFL -- 31st among 32 teams. "It's a big difference when he was on the field - and it was a major difference when he was missing," defensive lineman Phillip Daniels said. Springs has the abilities to be a decent Fantasy IDP option, so he might be worth a late-round flier in most leagues.
News: Washington Redskins DB Sean Taylor, a no-show for the first spring practices last week, participated in the team's workout Tuesday. Taylor practiced with the team and attended meetings, which were not mandatory. He has routinely skipped voluntary practices in the past, although he participated in most of the Redskins' offseason program last year. Coach Joe Gibbs said last week he had not been in contact with Taylor and was disappointed his starting strong safety was not in attendance. Taylor and DB Shawn Springs were the only two players who missed the Redskins' first three practices of the spring, which began May 8. Springs was not present for Tuesday's workout.
Analysis: Consider Springs a low-end DB in IDP leagues. Maybe if he showed up on time, his value would improve.
News: The Washington Times reports that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs plans on having veterans CB Shawn Springs, DEs Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels and SS Adam Archuleta all back with the team in 2007. All four were rumored to be cap casualties or trade bait. "As poorly as everything went last year, we all feel that we have the right kind of guys and that we should be better. We don't have to tear everything up," Gibbs said.
Analysis: None of these veterans are major stat producers anymore and are at best bye-week replacements in IDP leagues in 2007.
News: Washington placed cornerback Shawn Springs on injured reserve and released cornerback Mike Rumph. Springs broke the scapula in his right shoulder in the first series of Sunday's loss to St. Louis, ending a frustrating season for the 10-year veteran. Springs missed the first five games following abdominal surgery and missed another game with a hamstring injury.
Analysis: When healthy, Springs is a decent cornerback for Fantasy use but doesn't put up the stats like other DBs around the NFL. He should not be on any Fantasy rosters at this point.
News: Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs broke a shoulder blade in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. Springs, in his 10th season, was sidelined for the first five games of the season following abdominal surgery and missed a sixth game with a hamstring injury. It was unclear how Springs sustained his latest injury.
Analysis: Springs shouldn't be owned in Fantasy play following this injury.
News: Notable Redskins inactive for Week 13 vs. Atlanta include: QB Todd Collins (3rd QB), WR Mike Espy, S Troy Vincent, CB Shawn Springs, LB Khary Campbell, WR David Patten and TE Brian Kozlowski.
Analysis: Keep these players reserved for Fantasy purposes in Week 13.
News: Redskins DB Shawn Springs (hamstring) is listed as probable for Week 13 vs. Atlanta.
Analysis: Springs will likely play on Sunday against the Falcons. He has not had a good year by Fantasy standards. He is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 13, but could be used as a low-end Fantasy DB where needed.
News: The Redskins DST had two interceptions and one sack against Carolina. DL Phillip Daniels had four tackles and a sack. DB Sean Taylor had five tackles and an interception. DB Vernon Fox had five tackles and an interception. DB Carlos Rogers had six tackles. LB Marcus Washington had seven tackles. DL Andre Carter had four tackles. DB Shawn Springs had four tackles.
Analysis: Consider the Redskins DST a No. 2 option for Week 13 against Atlanta. Use all IDP players as needed.
News: Surgery to his abdomen following a groin injury kept Shawn Springs from doing most football activity for two-plus months. And he knew upon his return to the Washington Redskins secondary, his agility, stamina and overall level of play would not come back in one day. But five games into his return, Springs said he has turned the corner and feels in mid-season form. And he'll need to be Sunday, when the Redskins face Carolina and receivers Steve Smith (57 catches) and Keyshawn Johnson (47 catches) on Sunday. "If you're not improving, you're out there getting worse," Springs said. "I'm just now starting to get to where these guys were at seven weeks. For me, each week is another chance to get back healthy and try to finish the season strong." Springs made his season debut in Week 6 against Tennessee. In five games, he has 29 tackles, five pass break-ups and one interception. His pick prevented Tampa Bay from at least a field goal last week. It was the Redskins' first interception since Oct. 1 and their first by a defensive back since Sept. 24.
Analysis: Consider Springs a No. 3 DB in IDP leagues this week against the Panthers.
News: Notable Redskins defenders from Week 11 include: FS Sean Taylor (nine total tackles), CB Shawn Springs (seven total tackles, interception), CB Carlos Rogers (seven total tackles, forced fumble) and LB Marcus Washington (eight total tackles).
Analysis: These defenders are usable in Week 12 vs. Carolina.
News: Redskins TE Christian Fauria (ankle) is listed as questionable, while DB Shawn Springs (groin) is probable for Week 11 at Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Springs is a suitable Fantasy DB when healthy. Fauria is not a viable Fantasy option at this time.
News: Shawn Springs' return to action for the first time in more than two months hardly went the way Washington's top cornerback envisioned. "Physically, I feel all right," Springs said. "I'm not all the way where I want to be. I'm a little rusty. I wasn't back. I only played like 15 plays. Hopefully each week, I get better and better and play more plays. I was like a kid getting back out there. I wanted to make a difference (but I didn't)." Assistant head coach Gregg Williams wasn't disappointed in Springs. "Our game plan was to not fatigue Shawn," Williams said. "He's similar to a guy coming back after a long holdout back in the old contract days when they would pull something when they were trying so hard to catch up." Springs said on Monday that he expects to play more this Sunday in Indianapolis but that he didn't figure he would up to the rigors of an entire game. He is listed as probable for Week 7.
Analysis: Springs had three solo tackles in his return to the lineup. On most occassions Springs is a decent No. 2 Fantasy cornerback. However, until he starts playing in a majority of downs for the Redskins, consider him a risky start. The Redskins play the pass-happy Colts in Week 7.
News: Cornerback Shawn Springs had no setbacks in his first game of the season after missing the first five with abdomen and groin injuries. He said he was rusty in his limited playing time and is probably not yet ready to play every down. "I probably played more than I practiced all week," Springs said.
