Trestman singles out Williams

News: Bears coach Marc Trestman said new linebacker D.J. Williams is off to a great start in minicamp this far. "He's a guy who has come here to reinvent himself, so to speak," Trestman said. "Maybe that's the wrong term but you know he's in a new place in a new time and a new start. There's guys on this team that know him and think very highly of him, guys in the locker room that think very highly of him. He's very noticeable out there in practice."
Analysis: Before suspensions for off-field incidents cost him playing time last season he had at least 90 total tackles in each of his previous five seasons and at least 2.5 sacks in his previous four. He'll be turning 31 before the start of the season so there's a chance he could begin to decline but with the potential there for a strong year we don't hate the idea of spending a mid- to late-round pick on him assuming he does indeed earn the starting middle linebacker job in Chicago.

Bears add LB Williams

News: Linebacker D.J. Williams posted on Twitter that he has signed to join the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Tribune reports he's there on a one-year deal.
Analysis: Williams might be in line to replace Brian Urlacher in the middle of the Bears defense. Before suspensions for off-field incidents cost him playing time last season he had at least 90 total tackles in each of his previous five seasons and at least 2.5 sacks in his previous four. He'll be turning 31 before the start of the season so there's a chance he could begin to decline but with the potential there for a strong year we don't hate the idea of spending a mid- to late-round pick on him.

Broncos release LB Williams, QB Hanie

News: Prior to the start of free agency the Broncos have released linebacker D.J. Williams and quarterback Caleb Hanie.
Analysis: Williams has served previously as a massive tackling machine, racking up at least 90 total hits consecutively from 2007 to 2011. But trouble with the law cost him a lot of playing time in 2012, and his stats suffered. He'll need an opportunity to start before being trustworthy for Fantasy league use.

Williams back in action

News: Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams was finally able to make his season debut in Week 11 against the Chargers. Williams, who missed the first nine games of the year due to a suspension, finished with four tackles in the 30-23 win. Three of his tackles were credited as solo stops and he also registered a tackle for loss.
Analysis: Williams wasn't much of a factor against the Chargers, but that was to be expected after his long layoff. It will likely take a few weeks for the 30-year-old to get himself back in game shape so Fantasy owners will have to temper expectations for a bit. However, Williams has proved to be a very production IDP option over the years and can be considered a viable low-end option in deeper formats for the time being.

LB Williams might be back Week 11

News: Broncos coach John Fox said Monday the team has a one-week roster exemption for linebacker D.J. Williams, who missed the first nine games because of a suspension. "We're excited to have him back. He's a good football player," Fox said.
Analysis: It seems the Broncos are going to evaluate Williams during the practice week to see if he is ready to return Week 11 vs. San Diego. Williams has been a standout defender for Denver for quite some time, so he could be an impact Fantasy IDP player down the stretch. Track his progress before activating him in IDP leagues.

Williams' suspension extended

News: The NFL announced Friday that it has added three games to linebacker D.J. Williams' suspension. The suspension is now nine games long, and he is not eligible to return until Week 11 against the Chargers. Williams' suspension stems from a conviction in August of driving while ability-impaired, his second alcohol-related offense since joining the league.
Analysis: The Broncos were hoping to have Williams back by the time they took on the Saints in Week 8, but they will have to wait a few more weeks. Fantasy owners have been holding on to Williams with the hope that he was just a few games away from returning. Williams is still worth hanging on to in deeper IDP formats, but this further reduces the number of games you will get out of him at the end of the season.

Williams losses appeal

News:  Federal appeals court on Monday has ruled against Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams, who had appealed the dismissal of his lawsuit seeking to overturn a six-game drug suspension by the NFL. Williams had argued the NFL violated its own protocol leading up to Williams' suspension but a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed District Judge Christine Arguello's dismissal of the lawsuit. "We are obviously disappointed," Williams' attorney Peter Ginsberg said in an email. "By its own admission, the NFL failed to follow the procedures mandated to assure the validity of the samples. The NFL-designated arbitrator ignored those violations and the NFL and its arbitrator have now escaped judicial scrutiny. And D.J. Williams is the victim."
Analysis: Williams will now be forced to miss the first six games of the season as he has exhausted all of his legal avenues. He could also be facing some sort of disciplinary action from the league as this is his second offense for suspicion of drunk driving back. While he has led the Broncos in tackles in each of the last three seasons, Williams is not worth drafting in the majority of formats until his legal troubles are behind him.

Williams facing suspension

News: A jury found Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams guilty Wednesday of driving while ability-impaired, a lesser charge from his original driving under the influence charge stemming from a November, 2010 arrest. Williams is already facing a six-game suspension for failing a performance enhancing drug test, but with his legal troubles coming to a head Wednesday, he may be hit with an even stiffer penalty, given commissioner Roger Goodell’s hard-lined stance against off-field issues.
Analysis: Williams has led the Broncos in tackles for each of the past three seasons, but that is a streak that is almost assuredly coming to an end this year. This is his second time in his career that he has been detained for suspicion of drunk driving, as he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired in 2005. That makes it more likely that he will be hit with a further suspension, though he does plan to appeal the failed drug test suspension. Williams has been a solid Fantasy IDP option in recent years, but he has not practiced with the first team this offseason and, with all of these issues hanging over his head, he is not a recommended Fantasy option this season.

Williams has five tackles

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams was held to five catches Saturday at Buffalo in Week 16. He had four solo tackles.
Analysis: Williams remains a quality LB in IDP leagues and should remain active in all formats in Week 17 against Kansas City.

Williams has active Week 14

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams had arguably his best game of the season in the Broncos’ 13-10 Week 14 overtime victory over the Bears. The eight year veteran had nine tackles (all solo), two sacks, four tackles for a loss, and two quarterback hurries in the game.
Analysis: Williams has not been having a season up to his standards, largely because he has been dealing with an elbow injury throughout the year. He still has 75 tackles with an outside shot at 100 with three games remaining, and is just a half sack away from tying his career high. He has started to step up his play and is a quality option in the majority of Fantasy IDP formats.

Williams surging recently

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams posted nine tackles during the Broncos' 35-32 win over Minnesota in Week 13. Williams has now racked up 21 total tackles over his past two games as he continues to put his early season inconsistencies and injuries behind him.
Analysis: At the beginning of the year, it appeared Williams was going to have a difficult time topping 100 tackles for the third straight season. He was bothered by an elbow issue and eclipsed eight tackles only once over his first five outings. Now, the veteran has returned to his strong ability and could make a late-season run. Consider him a quality option in the majority of Fantasy IDP formats.

Williams leads the way

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams was all over the field in Week 12 against the Chargers. Williams finished with a team-high 12 tackles in the 16-13 overtime win, with 10 of his stops credited as solos. He now has 56 tackles on the season.
Analysis: Williams was all over the field on Sunday and finally was able to finish with double-digit tackles for the first time this season. The former University of Miami standout seems to finally be rounding into form after dealing with an elbow injury for the first few months of the season and looks poised for a strong finish. Continue to view the veteran as a viable Fantasy LB in the majority of IDP formats moving forward.

Williams tallies five tackles

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams recorded five tackles, four solo, in Week 11 against New York. The Broncos would win the game, 17-13.
Analysis: Williams has registered 44 tackles and three sacks on the year for Denver. Fantasy owners in IDP formats should continue to view him as a solid LB choice moving forward.

Williams solid against Chiefs

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams played well Sunday at Kansas City in Week 10. Williams had nine tackles, including seven solo, with a sack and a forced fumble. Williams now has 39 tackles and three sacks on the season.
Analysis: Williams remains a solid LB in all IDP leagues. Continue to start him in all formats in Week 11 against the Jets on Thursday night.

Williams remains consistent

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams had four tackles and a pass defended during the Broncos' 38-24 victory over Oakland in Week 9. Williams recorded four tackles for the second game in a row and now has 30 stops in five games this season.
Analysis: Williams batted down his first pass of the season as he continues to return to full strength following an elbow injury at the beginning of the year. The 29-year-old has two sacks, a total which should rise before the end of the season. Consider him a viable option in Fantasy IDP formats.

Williams has season-low in tackles

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams totaled four tackles (two solo) and one quarterback hit in Week 8 vs. Detroit. The four tackles were a season-low.
Analysis: Williams has played just four games after missing the first three due to injury. And despite a poor statistical outing Week 8, Williams has done pretty well since returning to the lineup. He remains a viable Fantasy play in IDP formats.

Williams stays busy in Miami

News: Playing back in South Florida, where he went to school, Broncos LB D.J. Williams totaled five tackles with a sack and a forced fumble at the Dolphins in Week 7.
Analysis: Williams should be good for decent tackle totals with some additional stats thrown in. Definitely consider him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy LB for his matchup vs. the Lions in Week 8.

Williams paces Broncos

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams paced his team with nine tackles, seven solo, in Week 5 against San Diego. Williams also recorded his first sack of the season in the Broncos 29-24 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Williams has 17 tackles through two games. He missed some time this year with an elbow injury, but seems fine now. Fantasy owners in IDP leagues should have a replacement for him next Sunday as Denver is on a bye. But when he returns, Williams should be viewed as a solid LB option.

Williams leads Broncos' D

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams led his team with eight tackles, seven solo, in Week 4 against Green Bay. The Broncos lost the game, 49-23. Williams was dealing with an elbow injury during the week.
Analysis: Williams looked good on Sunday, but that was his first action of the season. Perhaps he'll be able to give Von Miller some help on defense and get Denver on track. But one good game doesn't mean he should be thrown into those lineups yet. Williams should be viewed as more of a No. 4 LB option in IDP Fantasy leagues.

Williams takes field for Denver

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams was active for Week 4. He's been dealing with an elbow injury.
Analysis: Williams was active last week, but didn't play. Fantasy owners should keep him on the bench until he plays and proves he's 100 percent. When healthy, he can be a viable LB option in IDP leagues.

LB Williams probable Week 4

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams (elbow) is listed as probable for Week 4 at Green Bay.
Analysis: Williams was active Week 3, but he didn't play and has yet to appear in a game this season. That could change Week 4, but since we aren't sure how much Williams will play, he still remains a bit of a risky Fantasy start. He is usually a viable Fantasy LB when healthy.

Williams active for Week 3 game

News: The Broncos got a boost to the defense for Week 3 at Tennessee as LB D.J. Williams was active for the game. Williams returned to action for the first time since suffering a dislocated right elbow back in the preseason on Aug. 27.
Analysis: Williams will help the Broncos' run defense and have a shot at some decent stat totals in Fantasy IDP leagues. Still, until we really know what to expect from him this season, he could be best left on waivers.

Williams might play Sunday

News: Broncos OLB D.J. Williams practiced for three straight days, coming back from a dislocated elbow, but he has been limited. "If we deem him healthy, that is our medical staff, then we'll play him," coach John Fox said. The fact Williams missed significant practice time and hasn't gone through a full week of workouts also will factor into the decision
Analysis: Williams would help the Broncos' run defense and have a shot at some decent stat totals if active. Fantasy owners could peep him on waivers but not make him a part of active rosters.

LB Williams won't return Week 2

News: Broncos LB D.J. Williams (elbow) has been ruled out for Week 2 against the Bengals. He also sat out Week 1.
Analysis: Williams didn't practice all week and we still have no timetable for his activation. He is going to be a key part of the Broncos defense when healthy and a viable Fantasy LB, so make sure to stash him in all IDP formats.

Williams sidelined for opener

News: Denver LB D.J. Williams did not practice again Saturday and was listed as out on the team's injury report for Monday's game against Oakland. Williams, who suffered a dislocated elbow during the preseason, did not practice at all during the past week.
Analysis: Williams may also miss the Broncos' second game of the season as a result of the elbow injury, a big blow to the team's defense. The 29-year-old registered 119 tackles last season -- the fourth time he's finished with at least 100. Fantasy owners should continue to stash Williams as he makes for a solid option in IDP leagues when healthy.
