Rusty Smith hopes Titans have room for him

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/29/2013) A strong arm doesn't guarantee anything in the NFL. That's the problem for Titans quarterback Rusty Smith, who is on a bubble that he hopes doesn't burst.

Smith will play extensively Thursday night against Minnesota as he makes his case for a roster spot. But even if he performs, the Titans might not have room for a third quarterback, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains told The Tennesseean.

"[Smith] is a guy we have confidence in, and if the roster allows it we'd love to have him as the third quarterback," Loggains said. "Third quarterback has become a luxury in this league. I hope it's a luxury we're allowed to have, but I don't know."

Smith is behind starter Jake Locker and Ryan Fitzpatrick on the depth chart,

Smith likely heading to bench

(12/1/2010) Titans QB Kerry Collins (calf) spoke with the Jacksonville media on their conference call Wednesday, an indication that he is likely to start in Week 13 against the Jaguars over rookie Rusty Smith.

Smith rusty in first NFL start

(11/28/2010) Titans QB Rusty Smith was awful in his first start at the Texans in Week 12. Smith took on the league's worst-ranked pass defense and made them look like the top unit in the league by throwing three interceptions and connecting for 138 yards on 17 of 31 passes. All three of Smith's interceptions were swiped by CB Glover Quin, who entered the game with zero career interceptions and a broken right hand.

R. Smith named starter for Week 12

(5:35 pm ET) Titans coach Jeff Fisher named QB Rusty Smith the starter for Week 12 against the Texans after the team placed Vince Young on injured reserve Monday with a thumb injury. Smith, who was a third-stringer until this past Sunday, was forced into action against the Redskins after Young went down with the injury. He entered in the third quarter and led Tennessee on a crucial scoring drive to tie the game, but threw a costly interception late in the fourth quarter. He finished 3 of 9 for 62 yards and the lone interception. "I'm excited for Rusty because Rusty knows what to do," coach Jeff Fisher said. "Rusty understands the offense. There is going to be some growing pains with him a little bit, but ... I think Rusty will be successful." Smith will face a Texans defense in Week 12 that ranks last in the league against the pass, allowing 301 yards per game, and have given up an average of 25.6 Fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks on the year.

Smith taking over as starter?

(11/21/2010) Tennessee QB Rusty Smith entered the Week 11 game against Washington after Vince Young suffered a thumb injury. Smith targeted Randy Moss on his first NFL pass attempt and it could have been a touchdown had Moss not committed offensive pass interference. Smith led a crucial fourth-quarter scoring drive for the Titans to give them a short-lived 16-13 lead. Washington ended up tying the score and winning the game in overtime. Smith threw a critical interception with 5:12 to play that could have been the game-winning drive for Tennessee. Smith finished with 62 yards passing on 3 of 9 throwing with one interception. Young was visibly upset on the sideline during and after the game and coach Jeff Fisher said Young has lost his starting job. “If that’s the case, (rookie) Rusty (Smith) is our guy,” Fisher said after the game.

R. Smith moves up on depth chart

(11/15/2010) Titans QB Rusty Smith has moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart after it was announced on Monday that Kerry Collins will miss several weeks with a strained left calf. Vince Young is expected to make the start in Week 11 against the Redskins. Coach Jeff Fisher said Collins' injury didn't necessarily mean the Titans will make a move to add an experienced quarterback, even though the rookie Smith, a sixth-round draft pick from Florida Atlantic, will be backing up Young.

Smith earning No. 3 QB job?

(8/23/2010) The No. 3 QB job in Tennessee was battled out on Monday night against the Cardinals in preseason action. Both Chris Simms and Rusty Smith, the two competing for the No. 3 spot, got into the game. Simms finished 2 for 5 for 17 yards and Smith 3 for 5 for 16 yards.
