How do Falcons replace Tony Gonzalez?

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/3/2014) Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff is facing a gaping roster hole due to Tony Gonzalez's retirement.

"I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Nobody replaces Tony Gonzalez,’’ Dimitroff said, per ESPN.com. "We’ve been very fortunate to have him on our team the last five years.

"As we continue to build this football team, we’re going to have to make sure that we have the right mix and the right amount of tight ends with blocking ability and tight ends with pass-catching ability. Every year, you’re going to find a unique mix of that talent, both on the free-agent side and the college side. And it’s no different this year.’’

The Falcons' remaining tight ends are  Levine Toilolo and Chase Coffman. Jermichael Finley, Dustin Keller and Dennis Pitta are among the tight ends scheduled to be unrestricted free agents.

Chase Coffman added to injury report

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(10/5/2013) Falcons tight end Chase Coffman, who has a knee injury, was added to the injury report Saturday for the Week 5 Monday night game at home against the Jets. Coffman is listed as questionable for the game.

Coffman could replace Gonzalez

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/25/2013) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that if Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez retires as expected, the team could elect to go with Chase Coffman as a pass-catching tight end. A prospective unrestricted free agent, Coffman had a spectacular 16-yard catch against Seattle in the playoffs and could possibly salvage his career. “Chase is a very good receiving tight end, and he continues to grow and learn as he receives very good coaching,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “If Chase can … stay healthy, I think Chase has a very nice chance of being a quality football player in this league.”
