Preseason Stockwatch, take II

We are entering the third week of preseason games, and this is when things start to get interesting. For the most part, this is the week when teams start to implement game plans, play starters for extended minutes and analyze jobs on the line in game situations.

With many Fantasy drafts taking place, it's also the time when you're looking for that extra edge. Well, we're here to help. Here are some players who are seeing their stock rise and fall through the first two weeks of the preseason schedule.

I don't know about you, but I'm ready to see guys getting more than three carries and throw 10 passes and play at least three quarters. This is the week to see it happen, so let's go.

Brandon Jackson, RB, Green Bay
Vernand Morency's knee injury has allowed Jackson to win the starting job -- for now. After he ran for 54 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries against Seattle in Saturday's preseason game, coach Mike McCarthy said: "Right now (Jackson) is our starter. ... He's a tough kid, works hard, very talented. I'm happy with the way he's attacked training camp, and he's taken full advantage of his opportunities." It's unknown what will happen when Morency returns in a couple of weeks, but Jackson is playing great as a rookie. Consider him a solid No. 3 Fantasy RB at this point with a lot of upside.
Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami
It's not a good sign when your coach is saying your job is in jeopardy to a journeyman like Jesse Chatman or when you're on special teams returning kicks. On Sunday, coach Cam Cameron said when asked about Chatman: "Our best running back will play. That hasn't changed, and that's consistent with what I've always said." Cameron is probably just trying to motivate Brown, and Chatman is familiar with Cameron's offense after spending time in San Diego, which gives him an advantage. Hopefully Brown proves this week against Tampa Bay he can still be a solid No. 2 Fantasy RB.
Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia
You wanted to see McNabb play his first game since tearing a knee ligament last November, and he didn't disappoint, going 6-for-9 for 138 yards against Carolina. He wore a protective brace on his right knee and didn't need to scramble much. And on his last play, he was sacked but got up and walked to the sideline without any discomfort. "It wasn't a test for me at all," McNabb said after the game. "I knew I can play this game at a high level." It looks like he's ready to assume his role as a No. 1 Fantasy QB again.
Clinton Portis, RB, Washington
It would be one thing if Portis was missing time just because he can, like LaDainian Tomlinson. But Portis hasn't been able to play at all this preseason due to knee tendinitis, and that's a concern to Fantasy owners given his recent injury history. With the emergence of Ladell Betts and with Portis being limited, it's time to consider Portis a No. 3 Fantasy RB heading into the season. If he gets on the field this week, which is unknown, and shows he's healthy, then his stock would improve. But that seems unlikely to happen right now.
Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona
For those of you looking for a starting Fantasy QB, let me introduceyou to Leinart. He rebounded from a poor performance in his first preseason game against Oakland to finish 7-for-7 for 70 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass against Houston. He also proved to be a good prognosticator, telling coach Ken Whisenhunt before the game he would be perfect in his completions. Leinart is going to be overlooked as a starting Fantasy option, but he has a ton of potential in that offense with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin as his receivers. He won't be perfect all the time, but he should be good enough.
Marshawn Lynch, RB, Buffalo
It's hard to criticize Lynch as a rookie making his first start in the preseason, but Fantasy owners are counting on him to be a sleeper this year. Against Atlanta on Friday, Lynch had five carries for 16 yards and no catches. Take away his first run of eight yards, and it was a disappointing debut. He will get better, but thus far this preseason he has seven carries for 19 yards. He has now fallen behind Brandon Jackson and Adrian Peterson as the best rookie running back. However, still consider him a No. 3 Fantasy option.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota
Did you see the run? The one against the Jets on Friday where he broke through the line with a spin move, took off down the sideline and lowered his shoulder into a defender before going out of bounds for 43 yards? That's why he was drafted No. 7 overall. He finished with 70 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, but coach Brad Childress said Chester Taylor is still the starter. Both guys will split carries, but Peterson is quickly emerging as a great Fantasy option this year.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh
You never want to hear your coach say this: "Like to see him perform better." That's what Mike Tomlin said about Big Ben after he played the entire first half and was 8-for-12 passing for 87 yards. Granted, the Steelers offensive line wasn't intact, and Willie Parker was making his preseason debut. But this was the Steelers third preseason game of five. Roethlisberger has a lot to prove to Fantasy owners this year, and he's not helping things by looking shaky. He still remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB and that's not likely to change.
Daunte Culpepper, QB, Oakland
With Trent Green struggling, do you think the Dolphins are enjoying this? Culpepper passed for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 6-for-8 completions and scrambled for 13 yards against San Francisco. He did have two fumbles, but he appears in line to start for Oakland ahead of Josh McCown and holdout JaMarcus Russell and could become a viable No. 2 Fantasy QB. "He's a dynamic competitor," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. "We heard that about him, but now we see it out there. He's a guy that gets in there and wants to play."
Kellen Winslow, TE, Cleveland
Winslow should be fine to start the season, but Fantasy owners want to see that he's 100 percent healthy coming off knee surgery before considering him an elite option. His talent warrants him being selected after Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey and Todd Heap, but his injury status has him No. 9 on our rank list. So far this preseason he's played in both games but has just one catch for six yards. The unsettled quarterback situation in Cleveland doesn't help, but hopefully Winslow can prove he's OK prior to the start of the season.
