Week 3 Preseason Stockwatch

By | Senior Fantasy Writer

The NFL preseason is in full swing, and how certain players perform in these games could have significant impact on the upcoming Fantasy season. The arrows indicate which way a player's stock is heading, but you'll have to read what we have to say to know whether a player's preseason performance will impact his draft status in Fantasy leagues.

Kurt Warner, QB, Arizona
Matt Leinart's sloppy preseason outing against Oakland has opened the door for Warner to return as the starting quarterback for the Cardinals. He immediately becomes a low-end No. 1 option since last year Warner passed for 3,417 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and plays with dynamic receiving options in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. The Cardinals should have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL, and Warner could definitely start for your Fantasy team if he plays as well as he did last year.
Jason Campbell, QB, Washington
After a great offseason and a good start to the preseason, Campbell has looked awful in the last two preseason games. He is a combined 10-of-20 passing for 67 yards against the Jets and Carolina, and coach Jim Zorn is concerned. Fantasy owners should be as well since Campbell has the potential to be a solid No. 2 Fantasy option and a decent sleeper. He's still worth drafting with a late-round pick in all Fantasy leagues, but his play has to improve if you're going to trust him to start for at least a week this year.
J.T. O'Sullivan, QB, San Francisco
In an unexpected move prior to the season, the 49ers named O'Sullivan the starter ahead of Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. O'Sullivan has played for seven other teams and thrown just 26 passes in his NFL career, but he spent last year in Detroit and knows offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system. That has helped him perform well in training camp, and he's been efficient without Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson, who have been limited with injuries. Since it's a Martz offense, O'Sullivan is worth drafting with a late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues.
Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City
Johnson should be fine this year coming back from the broken foot, and his stock being down really isn't a testament to his play. But quarterback Brodie Croyle and the Chiefs offensive line looked bad against Miami in the third preseason game, and Johnson will find it hard to run. He's still a candidate for 1,200 yards rushing and double digits in touchdowns and is worth drafting in Round 2 in all leagues. But don't reach for him in Round 1 at this time. The days of Johnson leading your Fantasy team are over as long as his quarterback and blockers continue to struggle.
Kevin Jones, RB, Chicago
Jones got on the field for the third preseason game against San Francisco, and that's a good sign since he's coming off a torn ACL last year. Jones has a chance to be a solid Fantasy reserve and is worth handcuffing with rookie Matt Forte. When Jones is 100 percent, he could start for the Bears because he is a talented running back who is injury prone. Hopefully he can stay on the field and is worth drafting with a late-round pick. The Bears want to return to a tandem like they had with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson, so they are counting on Jones to play alongside Forte this year.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Pittsburgh
Mendenhall lost two fumbles in the third preseason game at Minnesota, and that's never a good thing for a rookie trying to gain confidence in his coach. "It's something we were concerned about. It's something we made him aware of," Mike Tomlin said of Mendenhall hanging onto the ball. "It's part of being a ball toter in the National Football League. He's got the skill set to be successful. But the prerequisite is ball security, and he's got to shore up that element of his game." Mendenhall will share carries with Willie Parker and is worth drafting as a No. 3 Fantasy option, but if he loses more fumbles he will find himself on the bench and not helping your Fantasy team.
Brandon Marshall, WR, Denver
It's too bad Marshall will be suspended for the first three games of the season because we're seeing in the preseason what he's capable of doing. Through three games, Marshall has 10 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. There's still a chance the suspension can be reduced, but Marshall is showing even in less games he could still post dominant stats. He's worth drafting as a No. 2 Fantasy option and taking a chance on the weeks he's out with a reserve receiver. When he returns, he will reward you with tremendous production in 13 games.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Cincinnati
Housh expects to be ready for the season opener, but his hamstring injury has kept him out of the first three preseason games, which is obviously a bad sign. Along with that, Housh might not have his usual protection of playing alongside Chad Johnson, who is out with a separated shoulder that could last into the regular season. And Carson Palmer broke his nose in the third preseason game against New Orleans. The Bengals should be fine once the season starts, but it's worth keeping an eye on their progress. When healthy, Housh is a No. 1 Fantasy receiver, but his stock could be falling to a No. 2 option unless he gets on the field soon.
Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis
Drafting Jackson is still a risk because he missed most of training camp due to his holdout. But since he signed his deal prior to the start of the season and will get some reps, his value is back on the rise. He will likely continue to slide in the first round because of health concerns over his groin injury last year and the offensive line problems in St. Louis. But if Jackson is still on the board starting at No. 6 overall, draft him and consider him your No. 1 option. He might struggle this year, but if he stays healthy he could also have a dominant season.
Bernard Berrian, WR, Minnesota
Berrian is dealing with a toe problem that kept him from playing in the third preseason game against Pittsburgh, but that's not the main reason for his stock dropping. He's also gotten limited time with quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who hurt his knee in the second preseason game against Baltimore. The two have yet to develop a rapport, and Jackson isn't a stellar quarterback to begin with. Berrian should be considered a No. 3 Fantasy option at best in all leagues. And if his toe injury lingers, his value will continue to decline.

Peyton Manning
Report: More surgery for Peyton?
Peyton Manning, QB, IND
3:25 PM
News: Peyton Manning reportedly underwent a fourth surgery at some point between May and September of last year, and might need another surgery in the future. Sports Illustrated reports that Manning may have developed bone spurs just above the point of where he had fusion surgery and the feeling from the Colts organization is that he'll need surgery to fix that, if not another fusion surgery. The report did go on to say that Manning tried to show the Colts coaches that he was able to play in advance of Week 16 vs. Houston, taking part in team drills and throwing to a number of receivers. However, team trainers did not clear him for action.
Analysis: What we've been saying all along continues to be the case here as far as Fantasy is concerned: Manning has to prove he's healthy before being considered a quality No. 1 QB. Once he does that, then he'll warrant a selection alongside the likes of Matt Ryan and Ben Roethlisberger. Until then, the guy can't be trusted. Manning is expected to be released by the Colts before March 8, the date when he is due a $28 million roster bonus. His future seems to be very much in the air.

Ben Roethlisberger
Big Ben working on health
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, PIT
12:16 PM
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is "working out already." He began training at the Steelers facility days after he returned from an extended Pro Bowl stay in Hawaii. He talked to coach Mike Tomlin about where he is in his career and about the future. Roethlisberger is set to turn 30 in March. "I'm hoping that I'm just starting in my prime," he said. "I've never worked out this early. It's not like high-intensity, out killing myself, but I'm working out, I want to come to camp lighter than I've ever come, in better shape, because as you get to a certain point, a certain age in this football thing, your body doesn't recover like it used to." Roethlisberger sustained a number of injuries in 2011, including those to his foot and right shoulder as well as a broken right thumb and high left ankle sprain. He said his ankle feels fine, but he is working on healing his right shoulder, which needs to be strengthened because of the injury. "I'm just waiting on my shoulder, it's the only thing left to get healed up," Roethlisbeger said. "That's the last thing."
Analysis: Despite his various injuries, Roethlisberger threw for 4,077 yards, second most in his career. His 90.1 passer rating marked the sixth time in his eight seasons he has been in the 90s or higher. He should return at 100 percent in 2012, and he should be poised for a big year. We consider Big Ben a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB in all leagues, and he should be drafted with a mid-round pick.

Peyton Hillis
Freeman: Browns torn on Hillis
Peyton Hillis, RB, CLE
9:49 AM
News: CBSSports.com NFL Insider Mike Freeman reports the Browns remain uncertain exactly how to handle RB Peyton Hillis, who is an impending free agent. Freeman reports that some in the organization want to try and keep him, while others want to part ways and draft Alabama's Trent Richardson. Freeman says "I think the draft option will win out, but no one knows for certain just yet." The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently reported that the Browns would bring back Hillis for the right price.
Analysis: Hillis had 161 carries for 587 yards (3.6 avg.) with three rushing scores and 22 catches for 130 yards in nine starts last season. The year was overshadowed when he left the team with strep throat symptoms just before kickoff in Week 3 and then hurt his hamstring twice over the course of the season. Keep an eye on what happens with Hillis and where he ends up. If he returns to the Browns and can remain the starter he could be considered a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB. But if he leaves Cleveland and is part of a timeshare situation then his value would decline.

Randy Moss
Freeman: Moss hurting himself
Randy Moss, WR, TEN
9:45 AM
News: CBSSports.com NFL Insider Mike Freeman reports that WR Randy Moss could be ruining his chances at a comeback effort with his recent rant on UStream on Monday. Freeman reports that "everyone is watching, including NFL team executives," and one said "he has seen the Moss videos and believes Moss is utterly obliterating his chances of returning to the NFL." Freeman reports that the executive said his franchise was once considering Moss, but after watching the video stream, the team is no longer doing so. So while Moss might be creating buzz for a future show, he might also be utterly destroying any comeback chance.
Analysis: Moss will likely draw interest from some team in need of life at the receiver spot (St. Louis, Jacksonville or Chicago for example), but he ultimately has to prove he can play again after sitting out this past season. Continue to monitor what happens with Moss, who last played with the Titans in 2010, but if he signs with a team he would be worth a late-round pick in the majority of leagues on the off chance he still has the ability to play at a high level.

Tom Brady
Brady hurt left shoulder
Tom Brady, QB, NE
9:40 AM
News: According to CSN New England, Patriots QB Tom Brady did aggravate his injured left shoulder in the Super Bowl loss to the Giants. He was injured in the third quarter on a hit by Giants DL Justin Tuck. Brady initially bruised the shoulder against Miami in Week 16. He missed some practice time in the weeks after the injury but also threw six touchdowns in a Divisional Playoff win over the Broncos. His offseason work will not be impacted by the injury.
Analysis: We expect Brady to be 100 percent for the start of the 2012 season, and he remains a No. 1 Fantasy QB in all formats on Draft Day. Look for him to come off the board in Round 2 after Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are selected.

Albert Haynesworth
Bucs punt on Haynesworth
Albert Haynesworth, DT, TB
12:43 PM
News: The first transaction of the Greg Schiano era in Tampa Bay involves a big player but isn't a big surprise. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was released. "I appreciate Albert playing for us after some key injuries this past season," said GM Mark Dominik. "He was very professional and we now wish him all the best as he moves forward."
Analysis: Haynesworth might land another contract before the end of his career, but until he regains his form -- mentally and physically -- from his big days in Tennessee, the guy isn't worth owning.

Buccaneers
Bucs punt on DT Haynesworth
Buccaneers, DST TB,
12:41 PM
News: The first transaction of the Greg Schiano era in Tampa Bay involves a big player but isn't a big surprise. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was released. "I appreciate Albert playing for us after some key injuries this past season," said GM Mark Dominik. "He was very professional and we now wish him all the best as he moves forward."
Analysis: Tampa Bay's defense is considered iffy heading into 2012, and that would be the case if Haynesworth were on the roster. At the most, we could see the Bucs DST as a one-week replacement option during the season.

David Garrard
Garrard close to return
David Garrard, QB, JAC
12:20 PM
News: The NFL Network reports that QB David Garrard expects to be fully healed from back surgery in mid-March/early-April and is intent on playing in 2012, his agent said. "He is open to all teams and any situation that makes since for him and the team," said Garrard's agent, Albert Irby. His agent also indicated Garrard would be open to being a backup. Garrard did not play in 2011 after being cut by the Jaguars prior to the season.
Analysis: Keep an eye on where Garrard lands, but it is unlikely he will open the season as a starter. He would only be a No. 2 Fantasy QB at best in deeper leagues.

Nick Miller
Report: Miller to be suspended
Nick Miller, WR, STL
9:57 AM
News: According to 101sports.com in St. Louis, Rams WR Nick Miller has been suspended for the first four games of the season. It has not been confirmed yet whether Miller was suspended for violating the policy on performance enhancing substances. Miller played six games for the Rams in 2011 and had the team’s only kick return for a touchdown. He returned a punt 88 yards for a score on Nov. 27 against Arizona. For the season with the Rams, he had eight punt returns for 128 yards (16.0-yard average), two kickoff returns for 43 yards and one reception for 8 yards.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Miller, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.

Matt Schaub
Schaub doing well in rehab
Matt Schaub, QB, HOU
2/14/2012
News: The Houston Chronicle reports Tuesday that Texans QB Matt Schaub, who finished the season on injured reserve following foot surgery, is doing well and his rehab is ahead of schedule. The report says Schaub works out almost every day.
Analysis: This is great news, and we expect Schaub to return at 100 percent in 2012. Continue to monitor what happens with Schaub, but he should be considered a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy QB heading into the season. He is worth a mid-round pick in all leagues on Draft Day.
