Week 1 Fantasy Stockwatch

Each week, we'll survey the Fantasy Football landscape and provide you with a list of players whose Fantasy value has increased or decreased over the course of the past week. The arrows indicate which way a player's stock is heading, but you'll have to read what we have to say to know whether you should hold on to a player or make a move to trade him -- or trade for him.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Brett Favre who? OK, so Rodgers isn't going to make people forget about Favre, but he played well enough in Week 1 against Minnesota to warrant consideration as a possible Fantasy starter. With Tom Brady (knee) out for the year, Rodgers could be worth trading for if you need a starter and can't pick up Matt Cassel. Rodgers has great weapons in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver and showed against the Vikings he could make plays running as well. |
Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle It went from bad to worse for Hasselbeck, who entered the season without Deion Branch (knee), Bobby Engram (shoulder) and Ben Obomanu (broken clavicle) and then lost Nate Burleson with a torn ACL in Week 1 at Buffalo. Hasselbeck could get Branch back soon, possibly for Week 2, but he has no one with experience to throw to right now. It also won't help that Maurice Morris (knee) could miss two weeks. Hasselbeck's value continues to plummet, so consider him a No. 2 option now. |
Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego Rivers made everyone forget in Week 1 that he suffered a torn ACL in the playoffs and still isn't fully recovered. He looked solid against Carolina with three touchdown passes and should be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option at this point. Rivers had a great training camp and preseason, and he's comfortable in Norv Turner's system. Antonio Gates (toe) also showed he is 100 percent, so consider Rivers another good option to trade for if you lost Brady. |
Marc Bulger, QB, St. Louis Bulger and the entire Rams offense looked lost at Philadelphia in Week 1, which was expected since they were outdoors and facing an aggressive defense. That could continue in Week 2 against the Giants. Bulger now lost another target in wide receiver Drew Bennett (broken foot), and rookie Donnie Avery has been slowed with a sprained knee. Torry Holt could face even more coverage, so this could be a long year for Bulger. He should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option for now. |
DeAngelo Williams, RB, Carolina Williams showed he's clearly the No. 1 running back for the Panthers right now by outplaying Jonathan Stewart in Week 1 at San Diego. Williams had 18 carries for 86 yards, while Stewart had 10 carries for 53 yards. Both will continue to share carries, but hopefully Williams will be more productive. If he is, try shopping him around since Stewart could eventually pass Williams on the depth chart. And we still don't know if Williams will get the short-yardage carries near the end zone. |
Chris Perry, RB, Cincinnati Perry struggled in his debut as the new starter with 18 carries for only 37 yards at Baltimore. The Ravens defense is solid, but Perry couldn't get anything going and now might be replaced by Shaun Alexander. The Bengals could sign Alexander, which would cut into Perry's carries. His quick ascent as a Fantasy option might be over. Don't release Perry even if Alexander signs, but try to trade Perry now while he still has some value as a starter. |
Justin Fargas, RB, Oakland The addition of Darren McFadden caused many Fantasy owners to shy away from Fargas, but he showed in Week 1 against Denver that he's still going to be a factor. Fargas had 97 yards rushing against the Broncos and outplayed McFadden (46 rushing yards), who left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury. McFadden should be fine for Week 2, but Fargas might be the better Fantasy option at this point. If you can, try shopping Fargas around your league because at some point McFadden will take over for the Raiders. |
Laurence Maroney, RB, New England If you follow the Patriots, what happened in Week 1 was a nightmare, and we're not talking about Brady's knee injury. Watching Sammy Morris (10 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown) outplay Maroney (10 carries for 51 yards) was horrible and could be a sign of things to come. With Brady out, the Patriots will likely lean on the ground game, and hopefully Maroney gets the majority of carries. If Morris continues to cut into Maroney's playing time, then Fantasy owners who drafted Maroney will be headed for a long year. |
DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Forget about Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, who are out with injuries. Forget about Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett, who played well in Week 1 against the Rams. Jackson is going to be the Eagles best wide receiver this year. He led the team with six catches for 106 yards against St. Louis, but he was targeted 10 times by Donovan McNabb. Since the Eagles love to throw, look for Jackson to be a staple in the game plan every week, which is great for Fantasy owners. |
Chad Johnson, WR, Cincinnati Again, whatever his name is, it doesn't really matter. What you care about is Johnson -- Ocho Cinco -- making plays. And right now he's not. He only had one catch for 22 yards in Week 1 at Baltimore, and along with the lack of production, there's a concern because of his injured shoulder. Johnson should get going as the season goes on as long as he doesn't need surgery. But right now Johnson is playing like Ocho Stinko and hurting Fantasy owners, who should keep him reserved. |
