Week 11 Injury Insider

By | Fantasy Writer

There had to be something wrong. The Pittsburgh defense is very solid, sure, but after five straight games with at least 120 yards rushing there was no way a healthy Clinton Portis would have totaled just 51 yards against the Steelers.

Now, two weeks later and after a bye-week for the Redskins, Portis' sprained knee has shown no improvement. He could not practice Thursday and there is now serious doubt as to his ability to play in Week 11's major rivalry game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Owners will be watching the status of Clinton Portis all weekend. (US Presswire)
Owners will be watching the status of Clinton Portis all weekend. (US Presswire)
"I was hoping [Thursday] that there would be a little more optimism, and there's not," coach Jim Zorn said of Portis' ailment. "He's still questionable. I would say there's no change today. I was looking for another jump, but there wasn't."

Things certainly don't bode well for the NFL's second-leading rusher and the Redskins would likely do the most good by allowing him to rest for one more week. This brings us to what his Fantasy owners can do to supplement their rosters in case he is a last-minute scratch.

The answer, unfortunately, is not much. The game being on Sunday night, most of your other options will have already played their Week 11 games. You'll likely be just as limited in your backup choice as will be Washington. Those choices are Ladell Betts and Shaun Alexander.

And if this was 2002 the choice would be clear. Jim Zorn's system was built for Alexander in his heyday. Except, with Betts looking like a lock to return from the knee injury that kept him out for three weeks and forced the 'Skins to go out and sign Alexander, the original backup is now ready to resume his role and start if Portis cannot.

"Betts looked good," Zorn said Thursday. "He's got a brace on, but made some cuts. That was encouraging."

Betts has always done a nice job filling in for Portis when he's had to and we expect that trend to continue in the case that Portis is out. Betts is only owned in 12 percent of Fantasy leagues, so if you own Portis, go pick him up now.

Portis wears No. 26 on his jersey but his chances of playing against the Cowboys are likely less than that. The good news is that you can count on Betts to soften the blow.

Running Backs

Frank Gore, San Francisco: The 49ers tailback is listed on the injury report with a neck injury but he told the San Jose Mercury News Thursday that he suffered a concussion against Arizona on Monday night.

Gore left the game after taking a big hit from defensive end Chike Okeafor but returned for the final play. He has yet to practice this week but the 49ers are expecting the man who represents 37 percent of their offense to be ready to play against the Rams in Week 11.

Fantasy Take: Gore may need one or two more days of rest before returning to action but his head injury shouldn't keep him out against the Rams porous rush defense. We give him a 75 percent chance of starting in Week 11 and consider him a must-start in any format.

Steven Jackson, St. Louis: Jackson has rushed for 17 yards in three weeks as his strained thigh has limited him to just seven carries and two missed games. Jackson, who has rushed for 525 yards and four touchdowns this season in seven games, thought he'd turned the corner as he was able to practice on Wednesday. That was, of course, until he woke up on Thursday.

Jackson, reports the Chicago Tribune, woke up feeling stiff and sore and was forced to watch the team's practice wearing sweats on the sidelines. The news caused coach Jim Haslett to severely doubt his running back's availability for Week 11 at San Francisco. "I doubt if we'll have him, to be honest with you," Haslett said. "But we'll see. You never know."

Fantasy Take: We give Jackson a 20 percent chance of returning in Week 11 against the 49ers. Unless the soreness subsides before the weekend, the Rams will probably settle for starting Antonio Pittman, who is not a recommended replacement in Fantasy.

Earnest Graham, Tampa Bay: Graham was unable to practice on Wednesday for the Bucs and that caused some concern leading up to Week 11 against Minnesota. The Bucs have been starting both Warrick Dunn and Graham and Graham has been the better Fantasy back. He rushed 19 times for 62 yards last week in a win over Kansas City.

Fortunately for coach Jon Gruden, Tampa expects to have the former Florida Gator healthy enough to meet the tough Vikings defense as he was able to return to practice on Thursday, reports the St. Petersburg Times.

Fantasy Take: We give Graham a very solid 70 percent chance of starting against the Vikings in Week 11 but you should probably have tempered expectations. Graham will likely continue to share carries with Dunn and now has Cadillac Williams to deal with as well and against the No. 3 rush defense in the NFL should be viewed as a No. 3 Fantasy option.

Selvin Young, Denver: You really don't want to own a Denver running back right now. The Broncos themselves don't really want any part of the Denver running backs at the moment. With names like Ryan Torain, Anthony Alridge, Andre Hall and Michael Pittman out for the season, the team is basically left with Young and fullback Peyton Hillis.

Young, however, has carried the ball just once over the past four games as his lingering groin injury just won't heal. And as of Wednesday, Young's groin was still keeping him on the sidelines.

Fantasy Take: We give Young a 10 percent chance of being healthy enough to play in Week 11 at Atlanta. And even if he's available, we don't expect him to produce very much as he'll still be bothered by the injury. With Hillis available in most Fantasy leagues, he could give you No. 3-type Fantasy numbers against the Falcons if you are in dire need of a last-minute option.

Darren McFadden, Oakland: McFadden's season started off so promising after rushing for 164 at Kansas City in Week 2. What happened? Injuries are a bummer and they have wrecked McFadden's freshman campaign as he's still dealing with injuries to both his toes leading up to Week 11 in Miami.

But McFadden was able to get onto the practice field on Wednesday, reports the Sacramento Bee and coach Tom Cable is optimistic his rookie out of Arkansas will be able to go.

Fantasy Take: Cable may be optimistic but we are less so. McFadden hasn't played in three weeks and his toes are still going to limit him regardless of whether he returns. We give him a 30 percent chance of playing against the Dolphins solid rush defense but don't recommend him as anything better than a low-end Fantasy option.

Quarterbacks

Kyle Orton, Chicago: Fantasy owners hoping to start Orton against the Packers on Sunday are in for a week full of guessing and uncertainty as it appears the decision to let him return from his right ankle injury will come just minutes prior to game time.

Orton has been able to practice in a limited capacity all week for the Bears, a positive sign for his pending return, but he hasn't been able to run much, his ankle has been heavily wrapped and the Bears won't make a decision until they are absolutely certain of his status, reports the Tribune.

Fantasy Take: Orton didn't play against the Titans in Week 10 as Rex Grossman got the starting nod. Continue to check back through the weekend as new can change on a dime, but currently Orton gets a 40 percent chance of starting at Green Bay. Hopefully, whoever you chose over him in Week 10 will be a suitable option once again should Orton be ruled a no go.

Tight Ends

Jason Witten, Dallas: Witten knows he probably should have just rested during Week 9 game against the Giants. His broken rib did not allow him to catch a pass although targeted four times in the game. But after the Cowboys bye week in Week 10, Witten is expecting to play against the rival Redskins in Week 11.

The Dallas Morning News said Monday that although Witten will continue to be limited in practice throughout the week, he will wear added protection around his rib cage and will jump at the chance to reconnect with Tony Romo against Washington.

Fantasy Take: Witten gets an 85 percent chance of playing against the Redskins on Sunday night. Our only issue is whether or not he'll be able to play like the No. 1 Fantasy tight end that he's become. With Romo coming back, we still recommended starting Witten in all Fantasy leagues in Week 11.

Alex Smith, Tampa Bay: Smith has yet to practice this week leading up to Week 11 against the Vikings, reports the Tampa Tribune.

Smith, who has caught 19 passes for 228 yards and three scores this season -- including two catches for 12 yards and a touchdown last week against Kansas City -- likely will not be able to face the Vikings because of his injured ankle.

"Alex Smith is a key member of our offense and team," said coach Jon Gruden. "He's played a lot of roles. We're concerned about his status for this game."

Fantasy Take: We give Smith only a 15 percent chance of suiting up against the Vikings. He's normally just a last-ditch Fantasy option anyway, so you can go ahead and keep him on your bench in Week 11.

Wide Receivers

Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez, Indianapolis: Colts coach Tony Dungy expects not one but both of his receivers to be healthy enough to play in Sunday's game against Houston. Neither Gonzalez (hamstring) nor Wayne (ankle) has been able to step foot onto the practice field yet this week, however, reports the Indianapolis Star.

Wayne hurt himself early in a Week 10 win at Pittsburgh but returned for six catches and 114 yards with a touchdown and, although he's not practicing, Dungy believes his ankle is healing nicely.

"Hopefully, by Friday, we can get him going. I think he will be able to play and do fine," Dungy said Wednesday. "It's going to be tough practicing for him, but I think game day he'll be there."

Gonzalez caught four passes for 26 yards last week and also hasn't practiced but Dungy believes he'll be fine for Sunday as well.

Fantasy Take: The Texans defend the pass well, but not nearly as well as the Steelers so after Week 10's solid numbers for Wayne you can expect that trend to continue. We give Wayne a 70 percent chance of starting against the Texans and label him a must-start. Gonzalez gets a 65 percent chance of starting and should be considered a No. 3 option if healthy.

Marques Colston, New Orleans: Colston caught seven passes for 140 yards last week against Atlanta and didn't look like his knee was bothering him much. However, the Times-Picayune is reporting that he was limited in practice Thursday and his knee continues to give him trouble.

"Colston's knee is just something that he has fought now for a year-and-a-half or so," said coach Sean Payton on the team's official website. "He had some swelling, but that was it."

Fantasy Take: It certainly sounds like Haslett expects his top receiving option to play in Week 11 at Kansas City. The Chiefs defense is not good at all and a healthy Colston should rack up huge yardage. We give him an 85 percent chance of playing against the Chiefs and consider him a must-start.

Derrick Mason, Baltimore: Mason caught three passes for 41 yards against Houston last week but is currently being held out of practice with a dislocated left shoulder, reports the Baltimore Sun.

Mason's injury is not one to take lightly, especially for a player who makes his living with his hands. Though, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron refused to rule Mason out. "He is one of the toughest guys I've been around." Cameron said. "You saw what he did in the second half the other day. I don't think there's anything that Derrick could do that would surprise me from a health standpoint."

Matt Jones, Jacksonville: The Jaguars pass catcher could not practice on Wednesday with a thigh injury but was upgraded on Thursday as he returned to practice, albeit in limited capacity.

Jones caught five passes for 62 yards last week in a win over Detroit but left the game in the 3rd quarter. Little is being reported as of right now about whether or not Jacksonville expects Jones to be ready to play against the Titans on Sunday.

Fantasy Take: We expect Jones will be able to play based on the fact that he got onto the practice field Thursday. Jones gets a 65 percent chance of starting against the Titans solid pass defense. He's developed into a very nice No. 3 or No. 4 Fantasy wide receiver option and should be starting in most lineups if he's available to play.

Deion Branch, Seattle: The Seattle wideout hasn't played since bruising his right heel in Week 5 against the Giants and has just three catches for 31 yards for the entire season. So what? He's back and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is back along with him.

"I'm feeling really good -- this is probably the best I have felt since I've been out," Branch told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Wednesday. "I'm practicing as if I'm playing and I'm doing what I have to do to get on the field. Hopefully coach will let me play."

Fantasy Take: Not only is Branch back at practice, but coach Mike Holmgren expects him to start on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Obviously, with the way his season's gone, nothing is for certain yet but we give him a 90 percent chance of returning to action. Still, we cannot recommend him until he plays a full game and looks like a contributor.

Rashard Mendenhall
PUP list in Mendenhall's future
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, PIT
2:15 PM
News: Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said Monday that there's a good chance RB Rashard Mendenhall will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. If so, he'd be forced to miss at least the first six games of the regular season. Moreover, Colbert is not convinced that Mendenhall will be able to contribute at all in 2012. "I never feel good about an ACL for a year," Colbert said according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Mendenhall tore his right ACL in Week 17 of last season; recovery time for such injuries is anywhere from nine months to a year.
Analysis: With Mendenhall iffy, it's time to start giving some legit consideration to Isaac Redman as the primary rusher for the Steelers in 2012. Redman started the Steelers' playoff game at Denver and had 121 yards on 17 carries and 21 yards on two catches. He'll likely get the first crack at starting in place of Mendenhall. There's still a lot of time between now and the regular season, but for now it's probably safe to expect Mendenhall to not be at even close to 100 percent to start the year, which will absolutely impact his Fantasy value. By August, you might be drafting Mendenhall as a middle- to late-round sleeper you'll have to sit on for a while. We'll keep you posted on Mendenhall as best as we can.

Randy Moss
Moss: I'm coming back
Randy Moss, WR, TEN
10:10 AM
News: Randy Moss took to UStream on Monday morning to announce that he plans to return to football in 2012. Moss didn't play last season after fizzling out with the Titans during a tumultuous 2010. Moss answered fan questions on the live video site and made it clear at the end of his web stream that he intends to play again after stepping away for personal reasons. "Your boy will be back for the upcoming season," he said. "Hopefully I can get on a team and finish this thing the way I want to." NFL Network reports that teams have already been calling his agent following the news.
Analysis: Most people remember Moss for his incredible big plays and ridiculous stats, such as the 17 touchdowns he scored as a rookie, or the record-breaking 23 touchdowns he caught in 2007, or the 14,465 yards he gained from 1998 to 2009. But some will remember him for a very counterproductive 2010 in which he caught just five touchdowns on 28 grabs with three different teams. If he does indeed return to football, where he plays and how quick he is will ultimately determine whether he's worth a late-round flier or something far more substantial.

Calvin Johnson
Lions want to lock up Megatron
Calvin Johnson, WR, DET
9:39 AM
News: Lions president Tom Lewand, who controls Detroit’s salary cap compliance, says the team has had positive negotiations with WR Calvin Johnson over a contract extension. “(Johnson’s) got a good relationship with Matthew (Stafford),” Lewand told a local radio station in Detroit. “There’s a desire to keep that (relationship) together. When that desire exists, you can get deals done.” Johnson is entering a contract year in 2012 and is coming off a sensational season, finishing the regular season with 96 catches for 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns with another 211 yards and two touchdowns in one playoff game against the Saints.
Analysis: Johnson is not going to leave the Lions if Detroit has anything to do with it, and we expect him to get a big deal soon. Regardless of if he's in a contract year or not in 2012, it's clear Johnson is the No. 1 WR in Fantasy, and he should be drafted in Round 1 in all formats.

DeSean Jackson
Eagles could franchise D-Jax
DeSean Jackson, WR, PHI
9:36 AM
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Eagles are going to use the franchise tag on WR DeSean Jackson. The report says the Eagles will not let Jackson, whose contract is set to expire, walk without getting something in return. Feb. 20 is the first day NFL teams are permitted to franchise one player before he reaches free agency. March 5 is the deadline. At 4 p.m. on March 13 the league year starts and players with four or more years of service who are not under contract are eligible to become unrestricted free agents. Jackson, who signed a four-year, $3 million deal as a rookie in 2008, will not reach the open market because the Eagles are expected to franchise him. The receiver would stand to earn approximately $9.5 million - nearly $9 million more than he made in base salary last season - if he played next season under the tag. Jackson said immediately following the season finale that he would be fine with the franchise designation.
Analysis: Jackson's play slipped some last season, partly due to his distraction over his contract, but he still caught 58 passes for 961 yards and four touchdowns. His deep routes and ability to take multiple defenders often opened up the Eagles offense underneath. Keep an eye on what happens with Jackson and where he ends up in 2012. With the Eagles he would be considered a No. 2 Fantasy WR with upside, but if he leaves Philadelphia then his value will be determined by who his quarterback is and his contract. He will likely be drafted around Round 5 in most leagues.

Isaac Redman
Redman in line to start for Steelers?
Isaac Redman, RB, PIT
2:23 PM
News: Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said Monday that there's a good chance RB Rashard Mendenhall will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. If so, he'd be forced to miss at least the first six games of the regular season. Moreover, Colbert is not convinced that Mendenhall will be able to contribute at all in 2012. "I never feel good about an ACL for a year," Colbert said according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That would open the door for Isaac Redman to be the starting rusher entering training camp.
Analysis: With Mendenhall iffy, it's time to start giving some legit consideration to Isaac Redman as the primary rusher for the Steelers in 2012. Redman started the Steelers' playoff game at Denver and had 121 yards on 17 carries and 21 yards on two catches. He's also stepped up while working with Mendenhall and without him, though his one other start in 2011 was a flop (61 total yards, no touchdowns vs. Tennessee). By August we might recommend drafting Redman with a pick in Round 6 or 7 as a good early-season starting option with potential to be a quality Fantasy choice for the entire season. We'll see how the Steelers' run game shakes out.

Steve Slaton
Slaton, Dolphins likely parting ways
Steve Slaton, RB, MIA
12:56 PM
News: The Palm Beach Post reports that RB Steve Slaton is not expected to return to the Dolphins in 2012. Slaton played in three games this season with zero starts after being picked up on waivers before Week 4. He had 17 carries for 64 yards (3.8 average) with one touchdown and a long of 28 and also returned three kickoffs for 85 yards. Slaton was signed as insurance early in the season when both Reggie Bush (groin) and Daniel Thomas (hamstring) battled injuries.
Analysis: Keep an eye on where Slaton plays in 2012, but he likely has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.

Doug Baldwin
Baldwin already working hard
Doug Baldwin, WR, SEA
11:14 AM
News: The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin is already working out with the hope of building on an impressive rookie season. As an undrafted rookie free agent out of Stanford, he was a long shot to make the team last season, let alone lead Seattle in receiving. But that’s what Baldwin did. He finished with a team-high 51 receptions for 788 yards and four touchdowns, good enough for fourth in the league among rookies in receptions and yards. Baldwin also finished 11th in the league in percentage of receptions caught for first downs (78.4 percent), and fourth in the league with 23 catches on third down to move the chains. The hard-working Baldwin said he thinks he can do better. “I felt like the stats and everything (were) real average,” he said. “But you’ve got to have that sense of confidence about yourself when you step out on the field. To be honest with you, I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to step out on the field that early. And with that, the transition wasn’t really that difficult because we have such a great coaching staff and they explain everything so well that it makes it easier for you to understand it and grasp the offense.”
Analysis: Baldwin’s production in 2011 secured his spot as Seattle’s slot receiver. But Baldwin wants to be considered a compete receiver. “They say that I’m the slot guy, but every year they’re bringing somebody in to try to take your job – that’s the upper management’s job,” he said. “So my job is to make sure that whoever they bring in doesn’t have a chance. That’s why I’m here, to be honest with you. “I want to be known as the greatest receiver who ever played the game, and it’s going to be hard to do that strictly out of the slot.” We like the way Baldwin is talking, and he has plenty of potential heading into 2012. Plan on drafting Baldwin as a sleeper with a late-round pick in all leagues.

Hines Ward
Ward hopes to remain with Steelers
Hines Ward, WR, PIT
9:53 AM
News: Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said Monday that no decision has been made on the future of Hines Ward. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported previously that if the Steelers did decide to release Ward, he was unaware of it. NFL Network reported that Ward won't be back with the Steelers in 2012 but a source close to Ward refuted the report. Ward's 2012 salary is high and he's expected to at least take a significant pay cut, if not get released altogether. Ward has said many times that he wants to end his career in Pittsburgh but he is determined to play somewhere in 2012, even if the Steelers do not want him. Ward, who turns 36 March 8, has played all 14 of his seasons in the NFL with the Steelers and holds nearly every team receiving record.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Ward and where he ends up in 2012. No matter where Ward plays, however, he would have minimal Fantasy value, and he is not worth drafting in the majority of leagues.

Josh Morgan
Morgan fine, looks at future
Josh Morgan, WR, SF
9:49 AM
News: The Sacramento Bee reports that 49ers WR Josh Morgan left the team facility after a workout Thursday as if there was nothing wrong with him. Morgan broke his lower right leg on Oct. 9 and was placed on injured reserve. He told the Associated Press that he's begun sprinting again, and he promises to be at full speed in the spring. Coach Jim Harbaugh has said the 49ers want to re-sign Morgan, who is a good fit for their power-based West Coast offense. Morgan, however, likely will test the market in free agency before agreeing to a new deal in San Francisco.
Analysis: Keep an eye on where Morgan ends up in 2012, but he has minimal Fantasy value in the majority of leagues. Morgan is the type of player who is more valuable to his team than Fantasy owners.

Jeremy Shockey
Panthers could bring back Shockey
Jeremy Shockey, TE, CAR
9:46 AM
News: The Charlotte Observer considers re-signing free agent TE Jeremy Shockey a "high priority" this offseason. Shockey was the No. 2 TE for the Panthers behind Greg Olsen, and he had a productive season when he caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns and missed only one game to injury.
Analysis: Though not the same receiver he was a decade ago, Shockey still is a dependable target, particularly in the red zone. If his asking price is too high, Panthers could turn to Gary Barnidge, who was having a great 2011 camp before breaking his ankle. Keep an eye on what happens with Shockey, and if he returns to the Panthers as expected he would be a No. 2 Fantasy TE on Draft Day worth a late-round pick in deeper leagues.
