Fantasy owners in standard-scoring leagues shouldn't worry too much about Vick. He is starting his comeback as a backup quarterback with the Eagles, and it's unlikely he'll get much playing time this season barring an injury.
Donovan McNabb remains firmly entrenched as Philadelphia's starting quarterback. Even though he's been injury prone in the past, he started all 16 games last season and is the Eagles' best hope at a Super Bowl run this year, so he's not going anywhere.
And Eagles coach Andy Reid has said Kevin Kolb remains the No. 2 quarterback, even if he's just holding the job until Vick gets comfortable with his new team or is on the active roster. Let's not forget, Vick isn't playing anytime soon.
He remains suspended to start the season and is eligible to be reinstated by Week 6. That could change, but we know how NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is with his suspensions.
Once Vick does play, however, he's not going to be used as a conventional quarterback unless McNabb is hurt. He might see some plays in tandem with McNabb as a running back or wide receiver and could always line up in the Wildcat formation.
Fantasy Football - Vick is a Fantasy waste of time in 2009 : FantasyNews.CBSSports.com
You're not going to waste a roster spot on Vick in a standard league on the hope he does play. He's not a handcuff option for McNabb either because that's not needed in most formats.
White, for example, can be used the same way with the Dolphins, and he's in a similar scenario as the No. 3 quarterback behind Chad Pennington and Chad Henne. The Dolphins drafted White with the hope he could play several roles, including in the Wildcat formation. Are you drafting him?
Now, in keeper and dynasty leagues, Vick does have value this year. Even if you have to wait on him this season and 2010 if he remains with the Eagles based on his contract.
This is an extended audition for Vick to become a starting quarterback in the NFL again. It could be with the Eagles if they decide to part ways with McNabb when his contract expires, also at the end of 2010, but Vick should have options now that the dog-fighting crime is behind him.
He's only 29 and should prove he can still play in this league, and some team will take a chance on him once the public relations stir is forgotten. Vick could get back to being a good Fantasy option once again. He may never have been a good quarterback when looking at his 53.8 percent career completion percentage, but he makes plays with his combination of running and throwing.
He just won't get the chance to make those plays this year. So pass on Vick for the chance to draft a No. 2 quarterback who will actually do something on the field in 2009.
