Our 12-team, $100 budget auction league
Not everyone prefers a snake draft to get their players. Some people like to go on spending sprees.
For those individuals there are auctions, and CBSSports.com recently added a slick, full-service auction room (complete with CBS play-by-play man Gus Johnson's voice!) for Fantasy owners to consider as an alternative to traditional drafting. Auctions are great for many reasons. Not only do they bring out the true competiveness in Fantasy owners by one-upping each other on player bids, but they also give owners the chance at drafting everybody. If you're picking 12th in a snake draft, chances are you won't see Adrian Peterson fall to you. In an auction, the guy who wants him bad enough gets him.
Obviously, there is a lot of strategy involved in auctions. You have to spend wisely: If you spend too much too soon, you'll miss out on low-price players later. But if you're too shy to spend, then your team will be loaded with mediocre talent. Budget balancing is huge, as is drafting off of tiers and having a nose for bargains.
In our 12-team league, we each took a turn nominating a player, and then the bidding began. Each owner started with a $100 budget. We opted for a standard-scoring league (all touchdowns worth six points) with two starting running backs, two receivers and one flex spot.
When you review our teams, please note that sometimes the best player for a starting spot on a team is on the bench. We highlighted the players who were nominated late and bought cheap by leaving them on the bench. Keep an eye out for the bargains every owner landed.
