Waiver Wire: Still looking for a decent QB?

By | Senior Fantasy Writer

Most Fantasy owners usually have their quarterback tandem established by Week 13. You have your starter, and in case of an injury or poor play, you have a reliable backup.

That might not be the case this season.

We had four quarterbacks show up on the injury report in Week 12. Kurt Warner (head, neck) and Ben Roethlisberger (head) were out, and Warner might miss another week. Matt Ryan (toe) left his game against Tampa Bay and will be out Week 13 against Philadelphia. And there is some concern about Eli Manning (stress reaction in his foot), which could put his status for the rest of the season in doubt.

We also have Kyle Orton (ankle) and Matthew Stafford (left shoulder) playing hurt, and there has been inconsistent play from Jay Cutler, Carson Palmer, Joe Flacco, Matt Hasselbeck, Matt Cassel and David Garrard in recent weeks. It could lead to Fantasy owners searching the waiver wire for help with the playoffs looming, and you should plan to cover yourself in case any more injuries occur. It's not bad to carry three quarterbacks at this time of year, especially if you have Warner, Roethlisberger or Ryan.

Fantasy Football - Waiver Wire: Still looking for a decent QB? : FantasyNews.CBSSports.com

We saw some fantastic performances from several quarterbacks in Week 12, and they are all available in the majority of leagues, including Ryan Fitzpatrick, Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Josh Freeman, Chris Redman and Alex Smith. All six of them had at least 21 Fantasy points in a standard-scoring league.

The first quarterback to target is Smith, who is owned in 55 percent of leagues on CBSSports.com. He passed for 232 yards and two touchdowns against Jacksonville and has five touchdowns and one interception in his past two games.

Smith has a great matchup in Week 13 at Seattle and should be added in all leagues. He also has a great schedule remaining, including games against Detroit and St. Louis to close the season. If the Colts plan to rest Peyton Manning, for example, Smith could be a viable replacement.

After Smith, you should go after Young (46 percent ownership), who passed for a career-high 387 yards with one touchdown against Arizona. This was Young's first game with more than 20 Fantasy points since regaining his starting job, but he's averaged 16 Fantasy points in the past five games.

That's about what you can expect from him in Week 13 at Indianapolis. It's not a great matchup, but Young is a safe fallback option with the injuries.

Redman (0 percent) could be a decent sleeper with Ryan out. Redman finished the game against Tampa Bay with 243 passing yards and two touchdowns, and he played well as a starter at the end of 2007 with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in the final five games of the year.

Redman doesn't have a great matchup against Philadelphia in Week 13, but the Eagles have allowed six touchdowns and three interceptions to opposing quarterbacks in their past three games against Philip Rivers, Cutler and Campbell. Redman is not a bad emergency replacement since he has viable targets in Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez.

After these three, there aren't great matchups in Week 13 for Campbell (31 percent) against New Orleans, Freeman (15 percent) at Carolina or Fitzpatrick (5 percent) at the Jets. Stafford (26 percent) at Cincinnati might be worth a gamble, but he's risky also.

If they are still out there, grab Orton (78 percent) or Garrard (77 percent) for this week. Orton has a great matchup at Kansas City, and Garrard should do well against Houston.

And even if they start again this week, you probably want to avoid Matt Leinart (16 percent) and Dennis Dixon (2 percent). Leinart plays against Minnesota, and Dixon would face Oakland.

In case you haven't noticed ... It's time to add all these running backs if they are still available: Larry Johnson (74 percent), Fred Jackson (73 percent), Felix Jones (73 percent), Chester Taylor (67 percent) and Rock Cartwright (65 percent). All played a significant role in Week 12 and could be factors down the stretch. In order, you should add Jackson, Jones, Taylor, Cartwright and Johnson. The only reason Johnson would jump to the top of the list would be if Cedric Benson (hip) remains out, but he's expected to return this week. And every Adrian Peterson owner should own Taylor because if Peterson goes down, Taylor becomes a star.

Each Tuesday we will highlight players who might be available in your league and whether you should consider picking them up off waivers based on their recent performances. The players chosen are based on the percentage of ownership in CBSSports.com leagues.

Add 'Em

Jason Avant, WR, Philadelphia
Owned: 23 percent of leagues
Week 12: Caught five passes for 94 yards against Washington.
Analysis: We've been talking about Avant for the past three weeks since he had eight catches for 156 yards at San Diego in Week 10. In his past three games, Avant has 17 catches for 276 yards and a touchdown, and his production could increase with DeSean Jackson leaving the Redskins game with a concussion and Brent Celek hurting his hand. Donovan McNabb will spread the ball around, which means Avant could see plenty of targets in Week 13 at Atlanta and for the rest of the year.

Chris Brown, RB, Houston
Owned: 11 percent of leagues
Week 12: Had 11 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 20 yards against Indianapolis.
Analysis: Brown continues to share carries with Steve Slaton, and it doesn't appear like he's going away anytime soon. He has 22 carries in the past two games, and he is worth stashing on your bench, especially if you own Slaton. You can cut Ryan Moats to make room for Brown since Moats hasn't done anything for the past two games. You probably won't have to start Brown since he has only one game with double digits in Fantasy points this year, but he's a good insurance policy for Slaton.

Zach Miller, TE, Oakland
Owned: 63 percent of leagues
Week 12: Caught five passes for 73 yards at Dallas.
Analysis: Bruce Gradkowski taking over for JaMarcus Russell has improved Miller's Fantasy value. In two games with Gradkowski as the starter, Miller has 10 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals and Cowboys. You can finally have confidence that Miller will touch the ball on a consistent basis, and he could be a good backup Fantasy option or spot starter based on the matchup. Now, in Week 13, Miller has a terrible matchup at Pittsburgh, but he is worth adding as a No. 2 tight end if you have the roster space.

Jerious Norwood, RB, Atlanta
Owned: 22 percent of leagues
Week 12: Had six carries for 22 yards and caught two passes for 28 yards and a touchdown against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Norwood returned from a five-game absence with a hip injury against the Bucs and shared time with Michael Turner and Jason Snelling. Turner re-injured his ankle in the game and might be out again, which means Norwood and Snelling would share carries in Week 13 against Philadelphia. Norwood is worth adding in all leagues, especially in formats where you get points per reception because he is the Falcons' best receiver out of the backfield. Hopefully the Falcons will let Turner rest, which means increased touches for Norwood against the Eagles.

Avoid 'Em

Kyle Boller, QB, St. Louis
Owned: 3 percent of leagues
Week 12: Completed 28 of 46 passes for 282 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and had three carries for 26 yards against Seattle.
Analysis: We didn't mention Boller with the other quarterbacks because he's not worth adding, even in a dire situation. Boller has started three games this year with one touchdown, four interceptions and two fumbles. He doesn't have enough weapons to make him a viable Fantasy option so keep him on the waiver wire in all leagues even if he remains the starter in St. Louis for the rest of the season with Marc Bulger (leg) injured.

Jacoby Jones, WR, Houston
Owned: 12 percent of leagues
Week 12: Caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown against Indianapolis.
Analysis: Jones has done well as the No. 3 wide receiver for the Texans with four touchdowns on the year, but he only has one game with double digits in Fantasy points. He doesn't catch enough passes to make him a viable Fantasy option since his best game was Week 9 at the Colts with four catches, and his season-high for yards was Week 2 at Tennessee with 73. Jones might be useful in leagues where you get points for return yards, but keep him on the waiver wire in standard formats.

Willis McGahee, RB, Baltimore
Owned: 62 percent of leagues
Week 12: Had five carries for 18 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: McGahee scored his sixth rushing touchdown on the season and his eighth overall, but this was the first time he's scored since Week 4. Since then he has combined for 12 Fantasy points in seven games as the Ravens have become Ray Rice's team. The only reason to own McGahee is in case Rice gets hurt, but McGahee isn't a vital part of the offense any more with the way Rice has played. He should only be considered an insurance policy in deep leagues heading into Week 13 at Green Bay.

Scout 'Em

Kenny Britt, WR, Tennessee
Owned: 20 percent of leagues
Week 12: Caught seven passes for 128 yards and a touchdown against Arizona.
Analysis: You can add Britt in deeper leagues based on his play the past two weeks, and he has developed a solid rapport with Vince Young. Britt has 11 catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns against the Texans and Cardinals. Now, on the other hand, Britt had three catches for 62 yards in Young's first three starts, so his play has been erratic, which is typical of a rookie wide receiver. Still, he could be hitting his stride as the Titans make a playoff push after starting the season 0-5. It's not like the Titans have a dominant wide receiver, and Britt could be the one to fill that role.

Antonio Bryant, WR, Tampa Bay
Owned: 46 percent of leagues
Week 12: Caught three passes for 91 yards and a touchdown at Atlanta.
Analysis: Bryant has been plagued by knee problems all season, but he might be turning the corner with his best performance of the season against the Falcons. He now has three touchdowns for the year, and hopefully the development of rookie quarterback Josh Freeman can help Bryant finish strong. If he can stay healthy -- he's missed three games with the knee injury -- then Bryant has plenty of value. Remember, he's still playing for a contract, and last year he closed the season with 26 catches for 512 yards and four touchdowns in the final four games of the year.

Eldra Buckley, RB, Philadelphia
Owned: 0 percent of leagues
Week 12: Had two carries for 1 yard and a touchdown against Washington.
Analysis: Buckley will probably never find his way on to any Fantasy roster this year, but he's worth keeping an eye on with Brian Westbrook (concussion) out for at least another two games. If something were to happen to rookie LeSean McCoy or fullback Leonard Weaver then Buckley could become the starter for the Eagles. If that were to happen, Buckley would become an instant add in all leagues, so plan accordingly if you have an empty roster spot now.

Richard Seymour
Seymour gets bonus from Raiders
Richard Seymour, DT, OAK
2/12/2012
News: The Oakland Raiders have paid DL Richard Seymour his $7.5 million roster bonus, ensuring he'll stay with the Raiders next season. The Raiders could have released Seymour and his massive contract, but chose instead to keep him and not make wholesale changes to the roster.
Analysis: The 32-year-old Seymour played in all 16 games for the Raiders in 2011 as he recorded 29 tackles and six sacks. His six sacks were his highest total since notching eight in 2008 for New England. Seymour is just a low-end option when it comes to IDP formats in Fantasy play.

Rey Maualuga
Maualuga charged by police
Rey Maualuga, MLB, CIN
2/11/2012
News: Bengals LB Rey Maualuga has officially been charged by Cincinnati police with misdemeanor assault stemming from a bar fight last weekend. This report comes from The Associated Press. The Bengals had no comment.
Analysis: Maualuga is likely to be at least fined for this incident, especially after his 2010 DUI arrest cost him two game checks. He won't miss any playing time, though. Maualuga is just a low-end option in IDP formats heading into next season.

Hines Ward
Report: Steelers to cut ties with Ward
Hines Ward, WR, PIT
2/11/2012
News: NFL.com reports that the Steelers are not expected to bring back receiver Hines Ward for 2012. This news comes according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. "He has one year left on his deal worth $4 million," said La Canfora. "According to my sources, he won't be back there. So that's $4 million off the books."
Analysis: Ward has said he'd be open to taking a pay cut, but it sounds like Pittsburgh is ready to just cut ties with him. Ward would be a No. 4 WR and that means he'd likely have to play on special teams, which he likely would not want. Ward will have little Fantasy value entering 2012, that is for sure.

Kevin Faulk
Faulk contemplating retirement
Kevin Faulk, RB, NE
2/11/2012
News: New England RB Kevin Faulk is contemplating retirement after being a healthy inactive for the Super Bowl loss to the Giants, reports the Boston Globe. "That morning, when I got the word that I wasn’t going to dress . . . wow," Faulk said. “I went in the room, cried a little bit, because 75 percent of me knew that this could be my last game playing, not playing, just dressing. If I dress, there could be that chance that I could play. So that really crushed me a whole lot. Went into my room, read my Bible, read so many different Scriptures, so many different chapters in the Bible, until it was time to go to the stadium. [I took] my exit physical after the game and the trainers give me a big hug and that’s when I knew, like ‘Wow, that might be it'."
Analysis: Faulk was drafted in 1999 and the 35-year-old RB is a member of New England's 50th anniversary team. He didn't actually declare himself retired, leaving the door slightly ajar on his 14th NFL season. Faulk might finish his career with 31 total touchdowns, 15 receiving and 16 rushing. He had a solid career, but isn't a recommended Fantasy option if he does return next year.

Rob Gronkowski
Gronkowski has ankle surgery
Rob Gronkowski, TE, NE
2/10/2012
News: The Boston Herald reports that Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski underwent successful surgery Friday to fix his ailing ankle. The surgery was an arthroscopic procedure to clean out the ankle. Gronkowski played on a high-ankle sprain in Super Bowl XLVI, battling ligament damage to make two catches for 26 yards. The estimate is that it’s a 10-week recovery. That should allow him to be ready by mid-April, possibly for mini-camp.
Analysis: Continue to monitor what happens with Gronkowski this offseason, but he should be fine for the start of the 2012 season. Consider Gronkowski the No. 1 TE heading into the season. We can see Gronkowski being drafted as a Top 15 pick in all leagues, but it's a safer option to take him toward the end of Round 2 or beginning of Round 3 in all formats.

Reggie Wayne
Wayne unsure of future
Reggie Wayne, WR, IND
2/10/2012
News: Reggie Wayne told ESPN that while he'd like to stay with the Colts, he's just not sure if they want him. Wayne is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason and understands that his time might be over in Indy after 11 years. "I have been there 11 years and I would prefer to end my career a Colt. However, in due time those feelings could subside," he said. "I haven't heard anything from them yet, so maybe I am not as important on the chain of command as I should be. But either way, I'm cool. I have nothing bad to say about the Colts. ... My phone hasn't rung yet. It's only fair I worry about number 87 first. When I'm signed, then I can weigh in more."
Analysis: Wayne had a mostly horrible season thanks in big part to Peyton Manning being on the sideline. He caught 75 passes for 960 yards and four touchdowns, three coming in the final six weeks of the year. We don't think his 2011 is indicative of a slow-down in his game, but uncertainty about who he'll catch passes from and what his role will be keeps him from being a receiver we can get excited about. For now consider him a No. 3 Fantasy WR worth a mid-round pick.

Peyton Manning
Differing views on Peyton
Peyton Manning, QB, IND
2/10/2012
News: There are two differing reports on Colts QB Peyton Manning as the saga continues early this offseason in his recovery from missing this past season from neck surgery. CBSSports.com NFL Insider Mike Freeman reports that there remain a handful of team personnel men who have serious doubts he will ever play again or at the very least will miss most of next season. But, according to NFL.com, former Colts vice chairman Bill Polian, who was fired in early January, said he believes Manning will be fine in 2012 after he last saw Manning throw in late December. "It's marked (improvement) from where he was back in September," Polian said. "He threw it accurately, he threw it with a good, tight spiral, and he threw it with velocity. Generally, he looked like a pretty confident quarterback out there." Polian also indicated that Manning was able to make a variety of throws and throw across his body, which differs from a report on NFL Network earlier this week. Polian said that Manning's recovery is "coming, but coming slowly. But, nonetheless, its making progress."
Analysis: The bottom line with Manning is until the public sees him throw or work in practice we won't know where he's at in his recovery. The Colts also have to make a decision on his contract or else he can sign with a new team, with Arizona, Miami and Washington the likely suitors. If healthy, Manning will remain a No. 1 Fantasy QB no matter where he plays, but he has to prove that his neck is 100 percent. Continue to monitor what happens with Manning, and hopefully he can resume his career without any problems.

Fred Jackson
Jackson cleared, contract coming
Fred Jackson, RB, BUF
2/10/2012
News: Fred Jackson has been cleared to return to football activities for a couple of weeks following a broken fibula, but the good news for him doesn't stop there. The official team website reports that Jackson has been promised by team GM Buddy Nix that he will receive a contract extension, with the timeline set for before the 2012 season. Jackson is slated to be in a contract year as it stands now, but a new deal would change that. "Fred and I have talked," said Nix. "We want to extend Fred. I'd like for Fred to finish his career as a Bill. He's meant a lot to us. I've got great respect for him. We do want Fred back and we do intend to try to work out a deal with him. I've told him that. What we said is what we're going to do."
Analysis: Jackson told the site that he's ready to get started in 2012 after missing the last six games of the season with a broken leg. While he was sidelined, C.J. Spiller stepped up and put some good moves on the field, complicating the Buffalo running back situation heading into the new year. Chances are the Bills will lean on Jackson as they have been, but Spiller could take a bigger share of the run-game workload than in the past, and that could put a cap on what Jackson is capable of doing. He's also 31 years old but doesn't have the wear-and-tear that typically comes with rushers over 30. If the Bills extend Jackson then it will be clear that he's a part of their future and a potential 15-touch-per-game back. If not, he'll be in a contract year and could play well in hopes of cashing in after next season. Either way he represents a solid value as a No. 2 Fantasy RB worth a pick between late Round 3 and early Round 5.

Lavelle Hawkins
Hawkins gets three-year deal
Lavelle Hawkins, WR, TEN
2/10/2012
News: The Tennessean reports Friday that the Titans have agreed to terms on a contract extension for WR Lavelle Hawkins, who had his best season in 2011. He had 47 catches for 470 yards and one touchdown.
Analysis: Hawkins has minimal Fantasy value heading into 2012, especially if Kenny Britt (knee) returns at 100 percent. Keep an eye on what happens with the Titans receiving corps, but ignore Hawkins on Draft Day in most leagues.

Kenny Britt
Britt 'working hard'
Kenny Britt, WR, TEN
2/10/2012
News: The Sports Xchange reports that new Titans GM Ruston Webster said WR Kenny Britt, who suffered a torn ACL in September and had surgery in early October, should return in time for training camp in 2012. He said Britt appears to be a fast healer and is ahead of schedule in his recovery. "Kenny has been working hard and he's coming fast, probably even a little faster than I thought he would. So I'm real happy about that," he said. "We expect to have him out there for training camp. The good thing about his injury, is there is a good thing, is it happened early, and he's a very strong young and bounces back very quickly. We're hoping and planning to have him back for training camp."
Analysis: Britt is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2012 season, and hopefully he can come into training camp in shape. We consider Britt a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy WR when healthy, and he is worth drafting with a mid-round pick if his knee proves to be 100 percent.
