2011 Draft Prep: Our 12-team, $100 auction

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

For some Fantasy owners, snake drafts just aren't exciting. For them, there are auctions.

Auctions give every Fantasy owner the same opportunity at every NFL player. Auctions make for a more challenging way to build a Fantasy team. Auctions favor the bold -- the highest bidder gets the player, for better or for worse.

It's a fun enhancement that Fantasy drafters should consider (CBSSports.com even has mock auctions, in case you'd like to try it out). But it's not without strategy, just like any other Fantasy Football draft.

Shop smart. If you spend too soon, you'll have no shot at the inevitable bargains that exist late in every single auction. If you don't spend early on, you'll have no shot at the stud players inevitably nominated in the first few minutes in every single auction. Knowing who you want, and more importantly, knowing what the players you want should go for, is absolutely vital to Fantasy success. Consult our auction values to get a good idea of what the going rate is from player to player.

Be ready for the bargains. Like in snake drafts, the bargains in auctions generally happen late, not early. If you want in on some of those bargains it's a good idea to save at least 30 percent of your overall budget for the last third of your auction.

Don't drive up bids or mistakenly bid on players you don't need. Bid on the guys you want, not the guys other people want. If you own Antonio Gates, don't bid on Dallas Clark just so they go at the same price. It's better to let another owner get a bargain than for you to clog your roster with too many players at the same position.

If you're on the fence, spend. Bidding the extra dollar or two to get the player you want is always advised so long as you're not going to be forced to add $1 players to more than four roster spots. The difference between getting quality starters and a couple of $2 steals that someone else might otherwise get for $1 is negligible.

Follow the money. Fantasy dollars are not unlimited -- you're on a budget. As such, you'll have to know what your maximum bid is at all times, and if you're really good, you'll want to keep track of what the max bid is for your rival owners too. Typically, no player will go for more than 35 percent of a total budget, and every team will end up with at least a handful of $1 players.

Early on, nominate players you don't want: If you're trying to cut back on spending, or if you just want other owners to drain their funds, nominate players who you have no intention of winning. For instance, if you just won Aaron Rodgers, you're set at quarterback. But if you nominate Michael Vick and start the bidding at a dollar, someone else will start unloading their money. The more your opponents spend, the less they'll have to take bargains from you later on. You could even look over the roster of the owner with the biggest budget left, uncover their needs and nominate players they might flash their cash for. When the draft enters the bargain zone, that's when you'll want to nominate the players you want and potentially bid an extra buck or two to sway opponents from taking the player you like.

Check out our auction!

To give you the feel of this kind of format, CBSSports.com rounded up 12 experts with auction experience. On Aug. 24, we gave everyone $100 to spend on 15 roster spots, starting one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one flex, one kicker and one DST.

Raiders cut seventh-round pick WR Andre Dubose
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(5:32 pm ET) The Raiders released wide receiver Andre Debose on Wednesday, the club announced.

Dubose, a seventh-round pick out of Florida, was expendable because of an Achilles injury.

The move freed up a roster spot for return specialist Trindon Holliday, who the Raiders signed on Wednesday.

Cowboys hope to make push to sign WR Dez Bryant long-term
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(5:24 pm ET) The Cowboys will make a push to sign wide receiver Dez Bryant to a contract extension before July 15, when Bryant will be forced to play for the franchise tag tender, per ESPN.com.

Though contract talks have stalled recently, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said he is confident a deal can be agreed upon before the looming deadline.

“We know he will be a Cowboy this year,” Jones said. “If he ends up playing this year under the tag we will go right back to work again next year. Now would we like to get a long term deal on him? Of course we would. We’ll work hard to do that and I’m sure we’ll make a push at some point and see if we can make it work. If not, hopefully he will understand it’s difficult to make a deal at this point and he’ll come in and get ready to play.”

Bryant has been participating in drills during organized team activities despite the not having a deal signed. He caught 88 passes for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

Ravens DE Timmy Jernigan: 'I want to go to the Pro Bowl'
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(5:11 pm ET) Ravens defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan isn't hesitating on establishing huge goals for himself. The second-year player recently made it known he wants to take his game to a level only a few players reach every year.

“I want to go to the Pro Bowl. I’m not even going to sit here and lie to you,” Jernigan said. “I definitely want to win more games. That’s first.  You definitely want to win more games, help the defense get even better.”

Last year's second-round pick learned a lot from real playing time during his rookie season. it was him who filled in for Haloti Ngata when he was suspended four games last season, something he thinks prepared him a lot for this season.

“I learned a lot,” Jernigan said. “I definitely feel comfortable picking up where I left off last year. I feel really good and everything is starting to seem second nature to me. The biggest thing now is to keep it going and build on top of what I did last year.

“You can’t get complacent with what you did and feel comfortable with where you’re at. I’m just trying to take it to the next level.”

Jernigan recorded 23 tackles and four sacks in 12 games last season.

Redskins OT Trent Williams (ankle) eyeing training camp return
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(4:54 pm ET) Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams is eyeing a return to the team when training camp kicks off, per The Washington Post.

Williams hurt the ankle during the last year's final game. He adjusted his offseason training to accommodate and rehab the injury but when the soreness continued it was discovered the injury was slightly more serious than anticipated.

“It’s been an ongoing thing and my mindset was to get it 100 percent before we go into camp,” Williams said. “Obviously, didn’t want any setbacks in OTAs. I want it 100 percent so I can put it behind me and give my team the best.

“We got it pinpointed to what exactly it is. It’s encouraging that we’ve got the right plan,” Williams added. “Training camp is probably the most vital thing that I need to be ready for.”

Chiefs WR Albert Wilson suffers hamstring injury Wednesday
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4:09 pm ET) Chiefs wide receiver Albert Wilson sustained a hamstring injury during Wednesday's OTA session, reports The Kansas City Star.

Wilson was expected to compete for a starting job opposite Jeremy Maclin.

"Me being still young, I have a lot to learn," Wilson said Tuesday. "I'm just trying to take advantage of this opportunity. We're still early in the season and OTAs and we still have camp to go. I'm just out there fighting, fighting for a spot."

Bills DT Marcell Dareus, WR Percy Harvin miss OTA's
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(4:06 pm ET) The Bills were dealing with a couple of non-injury related absences at organized team activities on Wednesday, per ESPN.com.

Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and wide receiver Percy Harvin were both absent on Wednesday. Coach Rex Ryan said that injuries did not play a factor in their absences.

"No, there's something else [besides an injury]," Ryan said. "We'll let them address it, if they want to."

Redskins WR DeSean Jackson returns to OTA's, explains time missed
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(3:50 pm ET) Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson was missing in action during last week's organized team activities, but he's made his presence felt this week, per The Washington Post.

Jackson explained he missed all of last week because of personal issues he had to tend to and that he communicated with his coaches why he would miss the time.

“I had personal things I had to do back home,” Jackson said. “I’m a veteran in this league, going on my eighth year. Communication with my head coach and the guys here, they knew about it. Like I said, I had things I had to do, I was obligated to do back home in California. I’m here now, and I’m happy to be here with my teammates, and they’ve been putting in some great work, so I’m just trying to catch up and get back in the swing of things. But I had things I had to handle.”

Jackson, who led the team with 1,169 receiving yards and six touchdowns last year, said he was not phased by the time missed, and that his familiarity with the offense would help him bounce right back into the flow of things.

“I’m very familiar with the offense, the system, so it’s not like I have to re-learn something that I already know. I came back, I’m in the flow of things. I’m still starting wide receiver on this team. I’m just happy to be here, happy to be putting the work in and being around the fellows again.”

Spence was arrested in 2014 for possession of marijuana in Alabama.

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3:32 pm ET) Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins is trying to work his way back from offseason hip surgery and he said Wednesday that the hip was not bothering him, reports the team's official website.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Watkins said.

Watkins is expected to be fully recovered by training camp.

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3:24 pm ET) After suffering a season-ending knee injury last season, Ravens defensive end Brent Urban was able to participate in the team's OTA session Wednesday, reports ESPN.com.

During Wednesday's session, Urban was working with the starters. He has never appeared in an NFL game.
