2011 Draft Prep: Our 12-team, $100 auction

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

For some Fantasy owners, snake drafts just aren't exciting. For them, there are auctions.

Auctions give every Fantasy owner the same opportunity at every NFL player. Auctions make for a more challenging way to build a Fantasy team. Auctions favor the bold -- the highest bidder gets the player, for better or for worse.

It's a fun enhancement that Fantasy drafters should consider (CBSSports.com even has mock auctions, in case you'd like to try it out). But it's not without strategy, just like any other Fantasy Football draft.

Shop smart. If you spend too soon, you'll have no shot at the inevitable bargains that exist late in every single auction. If you don't spend early on, you'll have no shot at the stud players inevitably nominated in the first few minutes in every single auction. Knowing who you want, and more importantly, knowing what the players you want should go for, is absolutely vital to Fantasy success. Consult our auction values to get a good idea of what the going rate is from player to player.

Be ready for the bargains. Like in snake drafts, the bargains in auctions generally happen late, not early. If you want in on some of those bargains it's a good idea to save at least 30 percent of your overall budget for the last third of your auction.

Don't drive up bids or mistakenly bid on players you don't need. Bid on the guys you want, not the guys other people want. If you own Antonio Gates, don't bid on Dallas Clark just so they go at the same price. It's better to let another owner get a bargain than for you to clog your roster with too many players at the same position.

If you're on the fence, spend. Bidding the extra dollar or two to get the player you want is always advised so long as you're not going to be forced to add $1 players to more than four roster spots. The difference between getting quality starters and a couple of $2 steals that someone else might otherwise get for $1 is negligible.

Follow the money. Fantasy dollars are not unlimited -- you're on a budget. As such, you'll have to know what your maximum bid is at all times, and if you're really good, you'll want to keep track of what the max bid is for your rival owners too. Typically, no player will go for more than 35 percent of a total budget, and every team will end up with at least a handful of $1 players.

Early on, nominate players you don't want: If you're trying to cut back on spending, or if you just want other owners to drain their funds, nominate players who you have no intention of winning. For instance, if you just won Aaron Rodgers, you're set at quarterback. But if you nominate Michael Vick and start the bidding at a dollar, someone else will start unloading their money. The more your opponents spend, the less they'll have to take bargains from you later on. You could even look over the roster of the owner with the biggest budget left, uncover their needs and nominate players they might flash their cash for. When the draft enters the bargain zone, that's when you'll want to nominate the players you want and potentially bid an extra buck or two to sway opponents from taking the player you like.

Check out our auction!

To give you the feel of this kind of format, CBSSports.com rounded up 12 experts with auction experience. On Aug. 24, we gave everyone $100 to spend on 15 roster spots, starting one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one flex, one kicker and one DST.

Megatron contends he's still the 'same guy' from record-breaking year
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:07 am ET) It's quite evident Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson's production in 2014 has not been up to par. Johnson has missed time this season due to an ankle injury, but when he has been active, he has averaged just 72.3 receiving yards per game, which is his lowest average since 2010. He had averaged more than 100 receiving yards per game from 2011-13.

Johnson said Tuesday he is still the "same guy" from 2012, when he totaled 1,964 receiving yards, which is an NFL record. Quarterback Matthew Stafford suggests Johnson's drop in production is because defenses are doing a better job "keying in" on the star receiver.

"He’s the best receiver in the league, and they know that," Stafford said, per The Detroit News. "It’s on me to just throw him better balls and make sure we’re on the same page."

Stafford added it's tough to tell if Johnson is still hobbled by the ankle injury.

"It was a long time that he was out," Stafford said. "Even when he was in early on in the season, there were a couple games he played where he wasn’t himself. It’s always a long process coming back."

Vikings sign J'Marcus Webb after Phil Loadholt placed on IR
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:44 am ET) The Vikings placed offensive tackle Phil Loadholt on injured reserve Wednesday due to a torn pectoral muscle, which he suffered Sunday against the Packers, according to The Star Tribune. The team signed offensive tackle J'Marcus Webb to take his roster spot.

Report: Patriots sign Matthew Slater to two-year contract extension
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:41 am ET) The Patriots have signed wide receiver Matthew Slater, who primarily plays on special teams, to a two-year, $4 million contract extension, sources told ESPN. The contract runs through the 2016 season.

Jets make the change at QB -- Smith will replace Vick as starter
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:19 am ET) Despite speculation Michael Vick would start Week 13 against the Dolphins, Jets coach Rex Ryan informed his quarterbacks Wednesday morning Geno Smith would be returning to the starting role Monday.

Vick, who entered the starting lineup Week 9 against the Chiefs, was replaced by Smith in the third quarter of Monday's game against the Bills. Smith will be facing a Dolphins defense yielding 220.6 passing yards per game, which is the eighth-lowest total in the NFL. The Dolphins have allowed 20 passing touchdowns through 11 games.

Chargers going with rookie after losing three centers
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:54 am ET) The Chargers have lost three starting centers this season, including Rich Ohrnberger, who went on IR on Tuesday with a back injury. Rookie Chris Watt, a third-round pick out of Notre Dame, will start Sunday at Baltimore against the tough Ravens' front.

Watt played guard his entire college career.

"It's definitely very surreal," Watt told the team's website. "I knew I would have the opportunity right away to learn center, but who would have thought we would be down this many people this quickly. I'm happy I've been preparing the way I have and I'm ready to make the most of it."

Watt said he's learned from all three starters before him -- Ohrnberger, Doug Legursky and Nick Hardwick -- and has built a good relationship with quarterback Philip Rivers. Watt has played in eight games this season, but mostly at guard.

'Crazy' how far Justin Forsett has come
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:37 am ET) Justin Forsett played in nine games last season for the Jaguars, rushing for 31 yards. Jacksonville let him go in the offseason.

Now he's leading the Ravens -- his fourth team in four seasons -- to a possible playoff berth. Forsett ranks third in the NFL with 903 rushing yards and leads the league with 5.8 yards per carry.

"It's crazy, man," he told the Seattle Times. "You think about where I was this time last year, mostly doing a lot of scout-team work and coming in to play every once in a while. To just get the opportunity when I thought I would never get it again, it's a blessing."

Quarterback Joe Flacco said Forsett is "not letting the guy tackle him in the hole with his arms or anything like that. He's breaking those little things."

Forsett, who leads the league with 12 rushes of 20-plus yards, plays the Chargers in Week 13.

Cowboys WR Terrance Williams says he'll play Thursday
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:08 am ET) Cowboys wideout Terrance Williams told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he'll play Thursday against the Eagles despite breaking his left index finger Week 12. He pointed out he once played at Baylor with a cast on his broken hand.

Williams will wear a splint and likely take a pain-killing injection before the Thanksgiving game, the report said. He was able to catch passes in practice Tuesday, though he told the paper his finger "hurts bad."

Accuracy is Colt McCoy's calling card
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/25/2014) Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy, who reportedly will start Week 13 at Indianapolis over Robert Griffin III, has been incredibly accurate in the two games he's played this season. McCoy replaced Kirk Cousins in Week 7 against Tennessee and completed 11 of 12 throws for 128 yards and a touchdown.

After leading that winning fourth-quarter drive, McCoy started Week 8 at Dallas and was just as good, hitting 25 of 30 throws for 299 yards with an interception and rushing for 16 yards. Washington won 20-17 in overtime. McCoy has completed 85.7 percent of his throws so far.

Now he faces a Colts defense holding quarterbacks to an 88.5 passer rating, 13th-lowest in the NFL.

Report: Redskins benching RG3 for Colt McCoy
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/25/2014) The Redskins are planning to start Colt McCoy over Robert Griffin III at quarterback Sunday at Indianapolis, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move is expected to become official Wednesday when coach Jay Gruden meets with reporters, Schefter said.

Gruden informed the team Wednesday morning about the change at quarterback, according to Schefter.

McCoy went 2-0 while Griffin recovered from his dislocated ankle. Griffin threw for 106 yards, took five sacks and lost a fumble on his team's last offensive play Week 12 at San Francisco.

Over the last three games, all losses, Griffin has thrown for 564 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. He's holding the ball too long and not throwing with authority when he does let it fly.

Although Griffin is not part of Sunday's game plan, he remains "a significant part of the Redskins' long-term plan," Schefter said.

Seahawks TE Cooper Helfet nursing ankle injury
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/25/2014) Seahawks tight end Cooper Helfet, who caught a 20-yard touchdown pass Sunday, did not practice Tuesday due to an ankle injury. His status is uncertain for Thursday's game at the 49ers.

Two of Helfet's 10 grabs this year have gone for touchdowns.
