2011 Draft Prep: Our 12-team, $100 auction

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

For some Fantasy owners, snake drafts just aren't exciting. For them, there are auctions.

Auctions give every Fantasy owner the same opportunity at every NFL player. Auctions make for a more challenging way to build a Fantasy team. Auctions favor the bold -- the highest bidder gets the player, for better or for worse.

It's a fun enhancement that Fantasy drafters should consider (CBSSports.com even has mock auctions, in case you'd like to try it out). But it's not without strategy, just like any other Fantasy Football draft.

Shop smart. If you spend too soon, you'll have no shot at the inevitable bargains that exist late in every single auction. If you don't spend early on, you'll have no shot at the stud players inevitably nominated in the first few minutes in every single auction. Knowing who you want, and more importantly, knowing what the players you want should go for, is absolutely vital to Fantasy success. Consult our auction values to get a good idea of what the going rate is from player to player.

Be ready for the bargains. Like in snake drafts, the bargains in auctions generally happen late, not early. If you want in on some of those bargains it's a good idea to save at least 30 percent of your overall budget for the last third of your auction.

Don't drive up bids or mistakenly bid on players you don't need. Bid on the guys you want, not the guys other people want. If you own Antonio Gates, don't bid on Dallas Clark just so they go at the same price. It's better to let another owner get a bargain than for you to clog your roster with too many players at the same position.

If you're on the fence, spend. Bidding the extra dollar or two to get the player you want is always advised so long as you're not going to be forced to add $1 players to more than four roster spots. The difference between getting quality starters and a couple of $2 steals that someone else might otherwise get for $1 is negligible.

Follow the money. Fantasy dollars are not unlimited -- you're on a budget. As such, you'll have to know what your maximum bid is at all times, and if you're really good, you'll want to keep track of what the max bid is for your rival owners too. Typically, no player will go for more than 35 percent of a total budget, and every team will end up with at least a handful of $1 players.

Early on, nominate players you don't want: If you're trying to cut back on spending, or if you just want other owners to drain their funds, nominate players who you have no intention of winning. For instance, if you just won Aaron Rodgers, you're set at quarterback. But if you nominate Michael Vick and start the bidding at a dollar, someone else will start unloading their money. The more your opponents spend, the less they'll have to take bargains from you later on. You could even look over the roster of the owner with the biggest budget left, uncover their needs and nominate players they might flash their cash for. When the draft enters the bargain zone, that's when you'll want to nominate the players you want and potentially bid an extra buck or two to sway opponents from taking the player you like.

Check out our auction!

To give you the feel of this kind of format, CBSSports.com rounded up 12 experts with auction experience. On Aug. 24, we gave everyone $100 to spend on 15 roster spots, starting one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one flex, one kicker and one DST.

Jason Hatcher, Stephen Bowen to go on PUP list
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:10 pm ET) Redskins defensive ends Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen will open training camp on the PUP list, reports ESPN. Both are coming off knee surgery, but could be activated at any time. Hatcher could return in the next couple weeks.

Richard Crawford ready for camp
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:06 pm ET) Redskins cornerback Richard Crawford, who's coming back from knee surgery, has been cleared for training camp, reports CSNWashington.com.

Odell Beckham tweaks hamstring again
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:54 pm ET) Giants general manager Jerry Reese said rookie receiver Odell Beckham tweaked his hamstring when he pulled up short on a deep route Tuesday, reports the New York Daily News. Beckham missed a lot of offseason workouts due to a hamstring injury, but thought the problem was behind him.

It's unclear when he'll return to practice.

Vernon Davis still seeking new contract
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:48 pm ET) Although he reported for training camp, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is "definitely" not O.K. with his current contract, reports Pro Football Talk. The website suggests Davis might have reported after getting the team to waive fines he incurred for skipping minicamp.

The 49ers reportedly won't negotiate with players who hold out -- another possible reason Davis showed up, the report said.

Alex Boone following through on holdout
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:43 pm ET) As expected, 49ers guard Alex Boone will not report for training camp, reports Fox Sports. Boone is unhappy with his contract, which has two years remaining.

Mike Pouncey now expected to miss half the season
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:34 pm ET) Initial reports suggested Dolphins center Mike Pouncey might return from the torn labrum in his hip in late September. The Miami Herald reports that's unrealistic. A source tells the paper Pouncey likely will miss the season's first eight weeks, which covers seven games and a bye.

It's bad news for quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the entire offense.

Jeff Fisher calls Tre Mason a 'change-of-pace back'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:27 pm ET) Rams coach Jeff Fisher referred to third-round pick Tre Mason as "a change-of-pace back," reports the Montgomery Advertiser. "Good zone runner, obviously the numbers speak for themselves," Fisher said. "He was a guy we just couldn't pass up at that point."

Mason will serve as a complement to lead runner Zac Stacy.

Tavon Austin: Playbook was 'like Spanish to me' last year
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:19 pm ET) Rams receiver Tavon Austin admitted to the Associated Press that he didn't grasp the playbook as a rookie, especially early in the season. "I didn't really know what was going on," Austin said. "Everything looked like Spanish and sounded like Spanish to me."

The No. 8 overall pick from 2013 said he's comfortable with the system now.

"I understand the plays, the depth, the routes, the splits and everything," Austin said. "I just feel good that I can make some plays. Definitely, the game's slowed down for me."

Packers preparing Eddie Lacy for massive workload
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:12 pm ET) Although running back Eddie Lacy had some short-term injuries at Alabama, the Packers don't seem concerned at all about giving him a massive workload, reports PackersNews.com. Lacy, 24, carried 284 times in 15 games as a rookie while averaging 21.2 touches.

"This is the NFL, you're not going to play this game until you're 45 or 50," said running backs coach Sam Gash, a former Pro Bowl fullback. "A lot of people, especially the media, try to make it out, 'He's got to last.' He'll last as long as he's meant to last.

"If he gets 40 (carries in a game), I'm OK with that. If he gets 10 carries, 20 carries, as long as we're productive and winning, I don't really care. I tell all the guys, be ready for 50 carries, that's the way you should train in the offseason, as if you're getting 50 carries a game. You're going to beat your body down and beat yourself up, so it's going to harden you mentally and physically. You're not going to wear yourself down. God made a machine, he's not going to let you down when you need him the most."

Tandon Doss to benefit from Ace Sanders' absence
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:06 pm ET) With Jaguars receiver Ace Sanders suspended four games and taking a leave of absence to deal with "personal issues," receiver Tandon Doss will step in as the No. 4 wideout and punt returner, reports the Florida Times-Union. The Jags' top three wideouts are Cecil Shorts and rookies Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson.
