Cowboys scrambling at defensive end
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3:38 pm ET) With rookie Demarcus Lawrence expected to miss 8-12 weeks with a fractured foot, the Cowboys are thin at defensive end. Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie are running with the first team, and Martez Wilson and rookie Ben Gardner could get into the mix, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas hopes Anthony Spencer can return from his microfracture surgery. He's currently on the PUP list.

Ahmad Brooks restructures deal
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3:23 pm ET) 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks restructured his contract, saving the team $2 million in cap space, reports Pro Football Talk. Brooks took $3.395 million of his $5.1 million base salary as a bonus, allowing the team to prorate it.

San Fran is about $10 million under the cap, the website said.

Josh Gordon practicing 'as if he expects to lose his appeal'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3:18 pm ET) Browns receiver Josh Gordon "has looked at times in practice as if he expects to lose his appeal of his yearlong suspension," reports ESPN.com. Gordon is not working strictly with the starters, the website said, "and he has loafed through some routes."

Gordon has a reputation for not going full speed in practice, and that's been especially true in this camp. "He has given up on routes; he has not extended himself; and he has let passes go through his hands," the website said.

Anthony McCoy tears other Achilles
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3:02 pm ET) Seahawks tight end Anthony McCoy, who missed all of last season with a torn right Achilles tendon, tore his left Achilles tendon in Tuesday's practice, reports NFL.com.

NFL issues warning on Josh Gordon's appeal
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:55 pm ET) With Browns receiver Josh Gordon reportedly set to argue that secondhand smoke caused his failed marijuana test, the NFL sent an email to ESPN.com on Wednesday suggesting that argument might not fly.

"A cornerstone of both of our drug testing programs has always been that you are responsible for what is in your body," Greg Aiello, NFL senior vice president of communications, wrote to the website. "It is stated that way in the policies."

No player has won an appeal based on secondhand smoke, the report said.

Gordon's appeal is Friday. If he loses, he could be suspended for the entire season.

Hue Jackson can't stop gushing about Gio Bernard
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:47 pm ET) New Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson continues to describe running back Giovani Bernard in glowing terms. "He’s had an outstanding camp," Jackson told CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. "He’s so explosive, he can catch the ball, he’s a tough son of a gun. He protects. He blocks."

Mohamed Sanu 'generating a strong buzz'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:39 pm ET) Bengals receiver Mohamed Sanu seemed to fall out of favor last year as Marvin Jones emerged with 10 touchdown catches. But Sanu "is generating a strong buzz" in camp, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

"With Andrew Hawkins gone to Cleveland in free agency, I bet he gets a lot of looks," La Canfora wrote of Sanu. "[Quarterback Andy] Dalton seems to like throwing to him."

Sanu caught 47 passes for 455 yards and two touchdowns last season.
